Good evening and welcome to a round-up of some of what has been

:00:50.:00:55.

going on so far on the second day of the Rio Olympics. We will be heading

:00:56.:00:59.

to live action wherever we can but tonight is the big night because

:01:00.:01:02.

over there in the Aquatic Centre, Adam Peaty is going to be trying to

:01:03.:01:07.

win a gold medal in the pool, the first British man to do so since

:01:08.:01:13.

Adrian Moorhouse in 1988. He goes at 2:53am your time in the 100 metres

:01:14.:01:17.

breaststroke, stay up for it, it's going to be a magic moment. Let's

:01:18.:01:25.

tell you what is coming up tonight. Very soon, we will be rounding up

:01:26.:01:29.

what happened in the women's road race, Team GB's Lizzie Armitstead

:01:30.:01:33.

aiming to get the headlines for the right reasons in this one.

:01:34.:01:42.

We will be showing you Joshua Buatsi, the latest boxing Britain in

:01:43.:01:52.

action in the Rio ring. And we catch up with Britain's

:01:53.:01:56.

formidable tennis team, our flag bearer was in action today, and they

:01:57.:02:06.

are in search of Rio gold again. In foil fencing, we will see how

:02:07.:02:09.

Richard Kruse got on in his bid for glory.

:02:10.:02:18.

And coming into these games, there are high hopes for the British team

:02:19.:02:22.

in gymnastics. They were in qualification action today.

:02:23.:02:29.

And down in the Olympic park, I'm going to be joined by experts like

:02:30.:02:35.

Beth Tweddle and also Leon Taylor, who will be looking at the diving

:02:36.:02:40.

and I'm hoping to meet Adam Peaty's mother and his whole family and they

:02:41.:02:44.

will be talking to me before the end of the programme. Over at Copacabana

:02:45.:02:48.

beach, just relaxing with a little sand and sea behind him, that is

:02:49.:02:53.

where we find Mark Chapman. Thank you very much, Claire. Most

:02:54.:03:00.

nights, this is going to be my base, and the GB medallists that we will

:03:01.:03:02.

hopefully get over the coming days will come down here for a chat. As

:03:03.:03:06.

you can see, Chris Boardman will be one of my guests this evening, and

:03:07.:03:10.

the beauty of the beach is that whether it is 6am or 10pm, there are

:03:11.:03:14.

people doing sport on the beach, it is a sport mad beach. Just over my

:03:15.:03:20.

shoulder, the Copacabana Ford which is why Chris is here because the

:03:21.:03:24.

women's Road race finished just adjacent to the fought a little

:03:25.:03:27.

earlier and it was watched by Chris, Katherine Downes and Simon

:03:28.:03:28.

Brotherton. Lizzie Armitstead said that either

:03:29.:03:37.

way, she did when. A number of people at home and elsewhere hope

:03:38.:03:41.

she wouldn't. One of her rivals the goals before today's race even said

:03:42.:03:44.

her inclusion on the start line was shameful. It's not fair that she can

:03:45.:03:50.

race and other riders in France cannot. The rules have to be the

:03:51.:03:54.

same for everyone. There's a lot of tension in the peloton amongst the

:03:55.:03:57.

athletes about the three missed tests because these athletes have to

:03:58.:04:00.

be on top of the whereabouts and I just think they feel that Lizzie

:04:01.:04:04.

being in the position she is, at the top of the sport and a role model,

:04:05.:04:08.

that is one responsibility she should have taken. Some have given

:04:09.:04:12.

her the benefit of the doubt. Others not. But that word, doubt, runs

:04:13.:04:17.

through the whole story. Would gold for Lizzie Armitstead forever be

:04:18.:04:21.

tarnished by those three missed tests? I don't think it will be

:04:22.:04:24.

completely hollow for her because there will be a lot of pride in

:04:25.:04:28.

winning the Olympic title amongst her family and friends and herself

:04:29.:04:30.

and knowing how hard she's worked for the title. But there will be a

:04:31.:04:36.

strange feeling around a gold medal won by Lizzie today. But first, 136

:04:37.:04:42.

kilometres to cover, including a time of Vista Chinesa, the descent

:04:43.:04:45.

of which accounted for Geraint Thomas yesterday. -- a descent. It

:04:46.:04:51.

would be surprising to see Lizzie Armitstead have her best race after

:04:52.:04:54.

what she's been through in the last couple of weeks. It has taken so

:04:55.:04:57.

much mental energy and physically, that is so draining as well. You

:04:58.:04:59.

can't hide from that. COMMENTATOR: Lizzie Armitstead on

:05:00.:05:11.

the start line alongside Emma Pooley and Nikki Harris. The defending

:05:12.:05:15.

champion, Marianne Vos, on the front row of the grid as they prepared to

:05:16.:05:22.

lead. With eight, "Go, Lizzie" sign being waved in the background, Great

:05:23.:05:25.

Britain and the other 65 riders in the race leave Coaker the gap --

:05:26.:05:31.

Copacabana behind. Lizzie Armitstead stopping at the side of the road

:05:32.:05:35.

very early for what looks like a quick bite change. Emma Pooley,

:05:36.:05:41.

having a little dig. Armitstead clearly had some god of mechanical

:05:42.:05:44.

but she is making her way back now and clearly, Emma Pooley is unaware.

:05:45.:05:48.

Not an ideal start to the race for Lizzie Armitstead. At the front, the

:05:49.:05:53.

race is well and truly on now. It is really splitting up the field,

:05:54.:05:57.

already, they are not even on the coastal road yet. Armitstead,

:05:58.:06:01.

bouncing between vehicles, getting shelter, moving her way forward.

:06:02.:06:08.

Nikki Harris, getting a ticking off from the team leader, saying, "I

:06:09.:06:11.

could have done with your help, there". We have an attack from one

:06:12.:06:17.

of the Belgian riders, Lotte Kopecky, making the first big move

:06:18.:06:18.

of the day. Why are we only seeing motorbike

:06:19.:06:30.

shots? We are being advised that due to the windy conditions, the

:06:31.:06:33.

helicopters are not flying at the moment. You can see the warning flag

:06:34.:06:42.

being waved, there. This is why. Awful lot of mechanicals on here for

:06:43.:06:46.

the men yesterday. Lotte Kopecky hits the stones and a bottle bounces

:06:47.:06:48.

off. That did not take long, did it? The front of the peloton is really

:06:49.:07:00.

starting to break up. This looks like Ellen van Dijk from the

:07:01.:07:06.

Netherlands at the front. That is a great shot, so clearly the wind has

:07:07.:07:09.

eased enough to let the helicopters get back in the air. Now the fun

:07:10.:07:16.

starts once more. Well, they very much have Lotte Kopecky in their

:07:17.:07:20.

sights now, don't they? And also the peloton, you can see them at the

:07:21.:07:23.

back of the picture, and Armitstead is the second rider with the orange

:07:24.:07:30.

helmet on. The chasing group, closing in. There we go, we now have

:07:31.:07:38.

a group of six, I'm not sure how long it is going to last, though.

:07:39.:07:42.

Lotte Kopecky suddenly looks like she's riding through concrete. The

:07:43.:07:45.

peloton is right on their heels anyway, it will be over in seconds

:07:46.:07:49.

for this group. Suddenly, we are all back together.

:07:50.:07:58.

Lizzie Armitstead, over on the far side, going across your picture.

:07:59.:08:12.

The run-in towards Rio starts here and be run-in towards the circuit of

:08:13.:08:20.

Vista Chinesa. Quite exposed down there, that road. And another attack

:08:21.:08:27.

from Germany, looks like Trixi Worrack, one of the more experienced

:08:28.:08:33.

riders in the women's peloton. And at last they start to work together

:08:34.:08:36.

and they have surprisingly been given some leeway, here. That gives

:08:37.:08:39.

you a better view of the kind of advantage they have got, here. It is

:08:40.:08:47.

pretty significant. The fundamental fact is the peloton have to be

:08:48.:08:50.

riding hard, immediately, if they want to get back into this race.

:08:51.:08:59.

This is the steepest bit of the second section and she is making

:09:00.:09:04.

every bit of it count. I think this is Van der Gugten who is making the

:09:05.:09:07.

attack at the moment. Just starting to ease of a bid for the riders. --

:09:08.:09:12.

anomie vandalism. But their concentration levels will have to

:09:13.:09:15.

stay at 100% when they go over the top of the climate Vista Chinesa. --

:09:16.:09:22.

climb at. Anomie vandalism, the leader from the Netherlands. There's

:09:23.:09:26.

enough of a gap to put a motorbike in so it must be quite significant.

:09:27.:09:31.

Oh, and Aniek Van Koot and is down! It's bad. It is a nasty, nasty crash

:09:32.:09:38.

for anomie Van der Gugten. Well, they are getting close,

:09:39.:09:40.

tantalisingly close but it is still a handful of seconds between them.

:09:41.:09:46.

Here is the leader, Abbott, I wonder what is going through her mind at

:09:47.:09:50.

the moment. It is so close but Mara Abbott I think is going to have the

:09:51.:09:57.

gold medal swiped away. Bordini leads the other -- Elisa Longo

:09:58.:10:01.

Borghini leads the other two up alongside and Emma Johansson has not

:10:02.:10:04.

got the strength at the moment to come past Anna van der Breggen, who

:10:05.:10:10.

takes the gold. Silver for Sweden and Emma Johansson. Longo Borghini

:10:11.:10:15.

take the bronze for Italy and Lizzie Armitstead fifth over the line. I

:10:16.:10:21.

knew what I was capable of and what I had the legs and did as best I

:10:22.:10:28.

could. I'm just knackered! It started after I saw Van Vleuten and

:10:29.:10:31.

I was pretty shocked because I think she crashed hard. We did not see of

:10:32.:10:36.

course. And then I realised I'm the first one in the team so I have DJs.

:10:37.:10:49.

I did it -- have two J. I did it also for her and we knew we had to

:10:50.:10:53.

do it. Mara Abbott good tight head is appointment and this place will

:10:54.:10:55.

Lizzie Armitstead means she's no longer the centre of attention. The

:10:56.:10:59.

cameras on the new Olympic champion, Anna van der Breggen although the of

:11:00.:11:05.

most people are with her team-mate, Annemiek Van Vleuten.

:11:06.:11:11.

They are with her and the idea is to celebrate the show and the sport we

:11:12.:11:15.

have seen over the course of the day but impossible to do to because it

:11:16.:11:22.

was a horrific accident. Yes, we previewed the cause and have a look

:11:23.:11:24.

and I felt the sting the uncomfortable when we looked at the

:11:25.:11:27.

descent. I have to say, it is probably the best Olympic road

:11:28.:11:30.

course I've ever seen, a bit of everything and even the final

:11:31.:11:33.

descent was fantastic, very technical, just a few kilometres to

:11:34.:11:37.

go, it was going to play a part but when there's a gold medal at stake,

:11:38.:11:41.

riders will push to the edge of the envelope and some of them although

:11:42.:11:43.

slightly over. The consequences for doing that should not be... Without

:11:44.:11:51.

being melodramatic, potential death. But the course design, rather, the

:11:52.:11:54.

way that they have managed the route, we had some serious

:11:55.:12:00.

obstacles. It is the side of the road you have the problem with,

:12:01.:12:04.

here. The drop and then the concrete banking. Yes, there were concrete

:12:05.:12:09.

edges and frankly immovable objects, trees. They had not all been masked

:12:10.:12:16.

off. If someone did crash, it was almost certainly going to be

:12:17.:12:24.

serious. The latest we have on Annemiek Van Vleuten is that she has

:12:25.:12:27.

three small fractures in her back and is in intensive care with severe

:12:28.:12:33.

concussion. You could see it in Anna van der Breggen, how she reacted at

:12:34.:12:38.

the end. It has overshadowed her gold medal, what has happened to her

:12:39.:12:42.

compatriot. Yes, I'm sure she is breathing a sigh of relief because

:12:43.:12:45.

it looks like, although it is very serious and she is in intensive care

:12:46.:12:48.

at the moment, we believe, it is going to be OK. But it is more luck

:12:49.:12:54.

than anything else. Yesterday, in the men's race, we saw Vincenzo

:12:55.:12:58.

Nibali break two collarbones and Richie Porte broke his shoulder

:12:59.:13:01.

blade. Anyone who falls off on that descent was having a serious injury

:13:02.:13:06.

because it was the adopt the road, it had not been carefully managed.

:13:07.:13:10.

Weasel crashes with bikes and vehicles in the Tour de France as

:13:11.:13:14.

well. Is it going overboard to suggest that cycling needs to look

:13:15.:13:18.

at safety? Not at all, crashes are part of the sport. Those things are

:13:19.:13:22.

natural hazards and you have, you manage them as best you can. In the

:13:23.:13:29.

Parry rebate, they ride over cobbles and be collarbones are broken. --

:13:30.:13:34.

Paris regrets. But somebody sign of a course, looked at the edge of the

:13:35.:13:38.

road and said that's OK and Frankie, it was wrong. What would you say

:13:39.:13:42.

about Lizzie Armitstead's race? I thought she did very well,

:13:43.:13:45.

everything she could do, got into the right position, her team helped

:13:46.:13:49.

get there, she got to the bottom of the climb and it was physical and

:13:50.:13:52.

you should -- could see she was measuring her effort, thinking she

:13:53.:13:55.

was trying to stay in touch and it is incredible she got back up to

:13:56.:13:59.

fifth place, the best she could have hoped for today. Thank you very

:14:00.:14:03.

much, a sombre mood on Copacabana because of the injury to Annemiek

:14:04.:14:07.

Van Vleuten. Yes, but very good news that

:14:08.:14:10.

hopefully in time she will recover. The big news not in terms of

:14:11.:14:14.

sporting action but in terms of sports news is that the IPCC -- IBC,

:14:15.:14:19.

the International Paralympic Committee, has decided to ban Russia

:14:20.:14:22.

in its entirety from the Paralympics which start in Rio on the 7th of

:14:23.:14:26.

September. The president, Sir Philip Craven was very strong in his views

:14:27.:14:30.

and words, saying, "This is not about athletes cheating the system

:14:31.:14:33.

but the state-run system that is cheating athletes. I believe the

:14:34.:14:37.

Russian government has catastrophically failed the

:14:38.:14:41.

athletes. The medals over morals mentality disgusts me". Russia are

:14:42.:14:44.

completely out of the Paralympics in September. These are the other

:14:45.:14:46.

headlines from the Olympics. Catherine Skinner won the Olympic

:14:47.:14:55.

trap shooting title to leave Australia sitting pretty at the top

:14:56.:14:58.

of the medals table, with three gold medals and counting.

:14:59.:15:08.

wasted no time in getting on the medals table.

:15:09.:15:25.

South Korea's women win gold medals for fun in artery. In archery.

:15:26.:15:39.

Ten months after being placed into an induced coma following a fall and

:15:40.:15:45.

serious brain injury, William Fox-Pitt leads the individual

:15:46.:15:49.

eventing standings after two days of dressage, he and Chilli Morning out

:15:50.:15:55.

in front. He and Team GB are sitting fourth overall. Cross-country to

:15:56.:15:59.

come tomorrow. Great Britain have two men in the

:16:00.:16:03.

third round of the men's singles in table tennis, Liam Pitchford and

:16:04.:16:06.

Paul Drinkhall both celebrated victories today.

:16:07.:16:12.

Now, Great Britain has an exciting gymnastics team here for the women,

:16:13.:16:16.

Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold and Aimee Tinkler and Becky and Ellie

:16:17.:16:21.

Downie. They were on the mats today in terms of qualification.

:16:22.:16:29.

COMMENTATOR: Welcome to the Olympic Arena for the third subdivision of

:16:30.:16:38.

women's gymnastics. The host nation, Brazil, performing, along with Great

:16:39.:16:49.

Britain. Full twisting double back, great routine. Original work from

:16:50.:17:04.

Ruby. Started with a good bar routine, Eilidh. Really powerful

:17:05.:17:11.

gymnast. That was a very solid performance. We have seen her

:17:12.:17:20.

younger sister, Becky Downie. That will be very disappointing for

:17:21.:17:23.

Becky. We have had some good performances before. Up on floor,

:17:24.:17:34.

Ruby Harrold. One of the leaders of the GB team. Very clean into the

:17:35.:17:44.

spin. Great start for Great Britain. That's the way you do it. Lovely hat

:17:45.:17:51.

on these leaks, lovely triple twist. This is a big final tumble, come on

:17:52.:17:56.

Claudia. Double straight somersaults, she made it. What a

:17:57.:18:04.

show. Well done, Claudia Fragapane. My legs just kind of buckled and I

:18:05.:18:08.

did land on my neck and I did hear it crunch a bit. They offered me a

:18:09.:18:14.

wheelchair and I was like, no, get me back on the vault! Aimee Tinkler

:18:15.:18:19.

comes to fault. A solid vault from Tinkler. Ellie

:18:20.:18:36.

Downie is going to vault for the team. Come on, Ellie. Double twist.

:18:37.:18:44.

Might be the best we have seen so far. She is a very special vaulter.

:18:45.:18:52.

Who is to say we can't get an Olympic medal? We did get a couple

:18:53.:18:56.

of mistakes, but the team is what we came here for and hopefully we will

:18:57.:19:01.

make the team final. We will get another opportunity to compete. That

:19:02.:19:04.

is the main thing, just enjoying the Olympics.

:19:05.:19:08.

There is only one woman in the whole of Britain who knows what it is like

:19:09.:19:11.

to win an Olympic medal, that is Beth Tweddle, alongside

:19:12.:19:15.

the team qualified, but it was a dangerous looking day. Yes, it was

:19:16.:19:22.

mixed emotions for the team. Claudia Fragapane had a bit of a four on

:19:23.:19:26.

bars but then the routines went well. Unfortunately, Rebecca Downie

:19:27.:19:30.

caught her heels on the bars that has knocked out of the uneven bars

:19:31.:19:35.

final that we were hoping for. On the beam, they went solid until

:19:36.:19:39.

Fragapane had 14. Rebecca Downie also had a fall. But Ellie and Amy

:19:40.:19:45.

are still in the mix for a beam final. Floor, unfortunately, as you

:19:46.:19:51.

saw, Ellie had a nasty fall, which she had to stop her routine halfway

:19:52.:19:55.

through. But the medical team were with her straightaway. They took her

:19:56.:20:00.

out of the arena and assessed her. You can see, she landed and her legs

:20:01.:20:06.

just buckled. Luckily, she is spatially aware enough to get her

:20:07.:20:09.

head. The coach was with her straightaway, Colin, and we have our

:20:10.:20:14.

own medical team as well. Amazingly, she comes straight back out for the

:20:15.:20:22.

vault! Yes, suddenly, at the end of the warm-up, she appeared at the end

:20:23.:20:25.

of the vault run and did her vault. So the medical team had obviously

:20:26.:20:31.

cleared her to go. And she did a fantastic vault. Will she be sitting

:20:32.:20:36.

in ice bath right now? I am sure she will and the medical team will be

:20:37.:20:41.

assessing her. She has the all-round team final and she still in the mix

:20:42.:20:45.

for that beam final. So we will keep an eye on her. Overall, what would

:20:46.:20:51.

you give them as a score if you were a judge? A mixed day. We got our

:20:52.:20:56.

first chance to see Simone Biles, the star of the show for the USA.

:20:57.:21:02.

What did you make of her? She is normally a league above everyone

:21:03.:21:06.

else, but today she took it a notch higher. The floor routine, she

:21:07.:21:11.

scored 15.7, five tenths higher than anyone else. Then on the vault, she

:21:12.:21:16.

scored a 16, which you just don't see in women's gymnastics. There is

:21:17.:21:22.

literally nothing to deduct from that. I had seen her beam routine

:21:23.:21:29.

before I came here, and she just didn't move. So she has had a great

:21:30.:21:34.

day at the office. Team USA are about ten marks ahead of everyone

:21:35.:21:39.

else. What about the men's? Their team final is tomorrow. Tomorrow

:21:40.:21:47.

night. I believe the boys are starting on the rings and finishing

:21:48.:21:51.

on the pommel. It will be an exciting night of gymnastics. Every

:21:52.:21:57.

routine counts. That will be at 6.30 your time, tomorrow. Thanks for

:21:58.:22:00.

joining us. We turn our attention now to the sport fencing. Do you

:22:01.:22:06.

know anything about it? We had three fences here in action. One of them,

:22:07.:22:10.

Richard Kruse, competing at his fourth Olympics, got himself into

:22:11.:22:19.

medal contention. This is his story. With 22 events on today, there was

:22:20.:22:23.

plenty of action around Rio, especially here in the Carioca Arena

:22:24.:22:27.

2. The man of the moment was the Londoner Richard Kruse, who enjoyed

:22:28.:22:31.

a fantastic afternoon. The four-time Olympian was up against Algerian

:22:32.:22:37.

Hamid Ezzine the first round, coming through with a confident when. That

:22:38.:22:44.

was all Richard Kruse needed. Couldn't do it in 2012, but here he

:22:45.:22:51.

goes through. Next, he faced the Italian. This was a much harder

:22:52.:22:54.

challenge and resulted in a very tight encounter. Kruse eventually

:22:55.:23:02.

prevailed. Richard Kruse is through to the quarterfinals and has seen

:23:03.:23:09.

off a formidable appointment. Next up, a former world number one. This

:23:10.:23:14.

was an edgy contest, but Kruse dug deep and went ahead. Richard Kruse

:23:15.:23:20.

razed to the ground, punches the air. He is an Olympic semifinalist

:23:21.:23:23.

and this could be the greatest of days for him. From a former world

:23:24.:23:29.

number one to the current incumbent. But it was an uphill battle in the

:23:30.:23:34.

semifinal, and after defeat, he went on to compete for the bronze medal.

:23:35.:23:39.

Richard Kruse will have to go through to a very nervous bronze

:23:40.:23:46.

medal match. Between Kruse on the podium, Russia's Timur Safin. Kruse

:23:47.:23:52.

occurred early on, but then came back to lose by just two points. The

:23:53.:23:57.

Russian takes the bronze medal. That was edge of the seat stuff. A

:23:58.:24:02.

fantastic effort, but Britain's wait for a fencing medal goes on.

:24:03.:24:08.

Richard Kruse was very philosophical afterwards, saying, that is my best

:24:09.:24:11.

performance ever at an Olympic Games. It is his fourth Olympics. He

:24:12.:24:15.

is a qualified engineer and also teaches bagpipes once a week to his

:24:16.:24:21.

local Scout group. White, let's head back to Chappers.

:24:22.:24:26.

I don't know how to follow that! As we were watching the fencing, Mark

:24:27.:24:32.

Konta alongside me, who won in Beijing, said, have you ever tried

:24:33.:24:37.

fencing, to which the answer is known, but you have? Yes, we have a

:24:38.:24:42.

members' club in London. There was an exhibition event. Me and Leon

:24:43.:24:47.

Taylor from the diving went head to head and he beat me. Did you connect

:24:48.:24:56.

with him? I did. He cut me as well. Savage! The reason we are talking

:24:57.:25:00.

about fencing is because when we went to the Lagoa today, nothing

:25:01.:25:04.

happened because of the weather. So we were sat in the sun for a few

:25:05.:25:08.

hours, and the wind is causing problems on the lake again. Yeah,

:25:09.:25:15.

this lake is an iconic location. You have Copacabana on one side and

:25:16.:25:18.

Ipanema on the other, and the wind was whipping through the mountains.

:25:19.:25:23.

I have never seen wind like it at a course before. As you said, we had

:25:24.:25:29.

no racing today. In the warm-up this morning, there were crews sinking.

:25:30.:25:39.

Every boat, after the training run, had to come back and empty the water

:25:40.:25:45.

out. I have never seen that before. This was yesterday, when Serbia went

:25:46.:25:51.

in. But that was more of an error as well as the conditions. That was a

:25:52.:25:59.

technical fault. One of them got his or stuck in the water and then he

:26:00.:26:03.

fell in. We have speaking to a lot of Team GB today in the rowing. It

:26:04.:26:08.

is something they deal with and conditions can be variable, so

:26:09.:26:11.

delays are more than commonplace. The problem here at the Olympics is

:26:12.:26:16.

that there is a time frame for them, and now we are in the situation

:26:17.:26:19.

where some rowers might have to go twice in a day, which will take its

:26:20.:26:23.

toll. When you start playing catch-up to get the race is done,

:26:24.:26:28.

that is when it gets worrying. Also, you could normally miss one day. But

:26:29.:26:32.

the weather weather is looking, if this becomes a regular occurrence,

:26:33.:26:36.

as you say, the races will stack up and you could have athletes racing

:26:37.:26:41.

twice a day, which is not ideal. That plays in favour of the British

:26:42.:26:47.

team, though. And there are contingency put interest to make

:26:48.:26:51.

sure we cover our bases. The disadvantage will come for some

:26:52.:26:54.

other crews were some people are doubling up. The New Zealand pair of

:26:55.:26:58.

women who will go up against Glover and stunning are also in the New

:26:59.:27:02.

Zealand eight and they have a busy day tomorrow. That is a first

:27:03.:27:07.

example of a crew doing two events. They are in the women's eight and

:27:08.:27:12.

the women's pair. If they have to keep doing that on alternate days,

:27:13.:27:16.

that will come back and bite them at a crucial point when they are racing

:27:17.:27:21.

for medals. Mark, thank you. Mark has been busy because he has also

:27:22.:27:26.

been to the beach volleyball and watched the Brazilian men earlier.

:27:27.:27:30.

We will show you the Brazilian women later. But now it is time for the

:27:31.:27:35.

boxing. We had three Team GB boxes in action yesterday. They all won,

:27:36.:27:40.

so would Joshua Buatsi follow in their footsteps today? He was taking

:27:41.:27:45.

on Uganda's Kennedy Katende in the light heavyweight round of 32 bouts.

:27:46.:27:52.

We watch it from the second round of the fight with Richie Woodhall and

:27:53.:27:53.

Ronald McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: So to the second round

:27:54.:28:03.

we go. Joshua Buatsi took the opening round across the board. Look

:28:04.:28:09.

at the response that elicits from Kennedy Katende. He will be aware of

:28:10.:28:18.

the fact that he has conceded the opening round. That is a cracking

:28:19.:28:23.

shot! But it has been ruled a slip by the referee. He may have lost his

:28:24.:28:27.

footing, but surely a shot from Buatsi helped him to that prone

:28:28.:28:39.

position on the canvas. Just got to keep that guard nice and high,

:28:40.:28:46.

Buatsi. He also have to keep working with the jab, keep breaking the

:28:47.:28:49.

opponent down and setting up the backhand. You do that with a good,

:28:50.:28:56.

educated jab into the face of your opponent. By working with the jab,

:28:57.:29:03.

you are not getting too close to your opponent, because this fella is

:29:04.:29:07.

dangerous. So work with the jab, stay at a distance and then bring

:29:08.:29:12.

the right hand through. Just as the boxers broke away from the clinch,

:29:13.:29:17.

there was a cracking right hand on a downward trajectory from Buatsi.

:29:18.:29:21.

Good right hand to the body once again. Look at the manner in which

:29:22.:29:25.

Katende wilted into the ropes as he absorbed the shot.

:29:26.:29:45.

Buatsi has already experienced standing on top of a medal podium.

:29:46.:29:50.

There is a flashing right uppercut which caused Katende to lose his

:29:51.:29:56.

balance. But Buatsi has already stood on top of medal podium in Rio

:29:57.:29:59.

when he won the Olympic test event at the back end of last year here in

:30:00.:30:05.

Rio de Janeiro, with victory over his familiar rival, Peter Mullan

:30:06.:30:16.

Burke. -- he prevailed over Mullenberg at the gold medal bout in

:30:17.:30:21.

Turkey to secure his Olympic berth here.

:30:22.:30:27.

When Buatsi hits the body shot, he does not want to hold it too long

:30:28.:30:33.

because Katende soaked it up and is looking for the one shot over the

:30:34.:30:36.

top and if you've landed a body shot and you hold of it, there's a chance

:30:37.:30:40.

Katende could land a shot. He's got to keep the gap between himself and

:30:41.:30:45.

Katende, looking at his corner now. Some running repairs to the right

:30:46.:30:53.

bootlaces. I suspect Katende will welcome the respite. Look how he is

:30:54.:30:57.

holding his arms over the ropes because he has taken some fearful

:30:58.:31:02.

shots to the body from Buatsi. Buatsi operating behind a low guard,

:31:03.:31:07.

he has the edge in reach so when he is beyond punching range, that is

:31:08.:31:11.

perhaps a safe tactic but it is a fast left hand that Katende

:31:12.:31:15.

possesses. Lovely shot, nice, and again, so he has worked downstairs,

:31:16.:31:19.

switches the attack and creates a bit of space for himself because the

:31:20.:31:26.

opponent comes back. That was such a dominant round, it might be 10-8 and

:31:27.:31:32.

indeed it is, two judges giving it 10-8 in favour of Joshua Buatsi, who

:31:33.:31:38.

is in a commanding position, leading by three points on the scorecards of

:31:39.:31:42.

the first two judges after two completed rounds of boxing and that

:31:43.:31:46.

is another one of the vagaries of amateur Olympic boxing, unlike in

:31:47.:31:51.

the professional code, to get a 10-8 round, you have to Bertram Allen the

:31:52.:31:54.

floor but in the Olympic boxing, a dominant round like Buatsi enjoyed

:31:55.:31:59.

in Round 2 is enough to score it 10-8 in his favour. Rather tardy

:32:00.:32:06.

corner work prior to this third and final round. Carried out by the

:32:07.:32:12.

Ugandan corner. But the man wearing blue, Joshua Buatsi, has one foot in

:32:13.:32:16.

the second round now because barring a calamitous third and final stanza,

:32:17.:32:25.

a 3-point margin that he enjoys with the first two judges should be

:32:26.:32:29.

enough, even if he concedes the final round, to see him progress

:32:30.:32:33.

through to Round 2 of the living tournament. Again, he continues to

:32:34.:32:38.

tattooed the rib cage of Kennedy Katende. Competing in his second

:32:39.:32:47.

Olympics. This has been a rather painful reintroduction to Olympic

:32:48.:32:49.

competition because Buatsi is hitting him with full leveraged on

:32:50.:32:53.

both sides of the torso. With both the left and the right hand. He is

:32:54.:32:58.

really struggling now, Katende, he's been hurt time and again downstairs

:32:59.:33:03.

and Joshua Buatsi does not want to get complacent, keep working away,

:33:04.:33:06.

sensible boxing behind the jab, see it out, see the contest through. I'm

:33:07.:33:12.

sure that is what Paul Walmsley will have said in his corner. He would

:33:13.:33:15.

have been happy but at the same time, don't get complacent, get the

:33:16.:33:20.

job done. He is working well, just boxing sensibly in the last round.

:33:21.:33:24.

26 boxes contesting the light heavyweight tournament, as Katende

:33:25.:33:29.

touches down on the canvas for the second time and the man from

:33:30.:33:34.

Uganda's body language is not good. Oh, clubbing right hand and the man

:33:35.:33:37.

is in trouble and a follow-up right hand came over and his stance

:33:38.:33:40.

completely betrayed him, the towel has come in and Joshua Buatsi scores

:33:41.:33:46.

the first stoppage victory of the Olympic boxing tournament at Rio

:33:47.:33:48.

2016. Joshua Buatsi! What an Olympic debut

:33:49.:34:03.

from Great Britain's Joshua Buatsi. He progresses to the second round of

:34:04.:34:06.

the light heavyweight tournament courtesy of a piquillo -- TKO

:34:07.:34:11.

victory in Round 3 in the second round on the 11th of August in the

:34:12.:34:17.

morning session, the tournament's number three seed, the Uzbek,

:34:18.:34:23.

awaits. Talk me through that, that was really impressive. Thank you

:34:24.:34:27.

very much firstly, I want to thank God for the win. I'm really grateful

:34:28.:34:31.

for the win and most importantly, I'm glad my opponent is OK. He's a

:34:32.:34:35.

tough guy but we went in there, and like I said, the aim is to get

:34:36.:34:38.

anyone that is out in front of me, to eliminate them, whether it is by

:34:39.:34:42.

knocking them out, beating them on points, whatever way, the aim is to

:34:43.:34:46.

get the win and that is what we got so I'm grateful for that. Really

:34:47.:34:54.

impressive from Joshua Buatsi, and Steven Donnelly and David joys of

:34:55.:34:57.

Ireland have both progressed to the next round as well. If you look over

:34:58.:35:00.

there in the distance, you might be able to see some glowing lights, one

:35:01.:35:05.

of the hottest tickets in town, the Copacabana Stadium and that is where

:35:06.:35:07.

the beach volleyball is taking place, a real coliseum feel to it

:35:08.:35:12.

and yet one end, that looks out onto the ocean comic open, so it got a

:35:13.:35:16.

great view for the spectators as well and the Brazilian men action

:35:17.:35:18.

this evening and we are going to show you the Brazilian women, they

:35:19.:35:23.

have high hopes for gold in this tournament, this is one of their

:35:24.:35:27.

favourite strokes, this is Larissa Franca Maestrini and Talita Rocha

:35:28.:35:30.

and they took centre stage over there.

:35:31.:36:08.

They're genuinely is no better place will be followed Bill to be staged

:36:09.:37:05.

by Kurbatov on a beach. You can't beat it. Leon Taylor has joined me

:37:06.:37:08.

to talk about diving because today we have the three metres

:37:09.:37:12.

synchronised diving and we had British representation with Rebecca

:37:13.:37:15.

Gallantree and Alicia Blagg. How did they get on? And agonising six,

:37:16.:37:20.

tough to qualify for the synchronised in the Olympic Games,

:37:21.:37:24.

top eight only, Brazil got a place because they were the hosts 07

:37:25.:37:26.

really competitive teams and they were not good enough today. They

:37:27.:37:29.

will be disappointed because they would have been in the running for

:37:30.:37:33.

an outside medal chance but they were a bit outclassed. Looking at

:37:34.:37:36.

one of their diets, was the timing out? You get marks for execution and

:37:37.:37:42.

synchronisation and it was just a bit off. That particular dive,

:37:43.:37:47.

Alicia had a bit of a knee buckled, as we call it which meant she did

:37:48.:37:50.

not get enough height. Rebecca on the left is finishing the dive much

:37:51.:37:54.

higher, and the judges will be no lies heavily forfeiting the water at

:37:55.:37:58.

different times. -- will penalise heavily. Intent of the winners, no

:37:59.:38:08.

surprise, was it? Width record-breaking stuff, Minxia Wu

:38:09.:38:12.

winning her eighth gold medal, eight World Championship golds and at the

:38:13.:38:15.

grand old age of 30, she is getting towards the end of her career but

:38:16.:38:17.

they were formidable and incredible to watch. What makes Chinese divers

:38:18.:38:25.

so good? The history, the Heritage, the training programme and the

:38:26.:38:27.

conveyor belts just keep coming. They have a system in place that

:38:28.:38:32.

really works. They looked absolutely fabulous, almost flawless and I know

:38:33.:38:35.

you were completely blown away by them. How perfect is it? It's in

:38:36.:38:41.

outboard -- outdoor conditions, windy today, all sorts of things but

:38:42.:38:46.

I must admit, from a performance perspective, the scores were

:38:47.:38:48.

slightly lower than we would expect but look at that, poetry in motion,

:38:49.:38:54.

diving in unison, ripping the entry into the water so the execution

:38:55.:38:56.

marks are through the roof and the synchronisation is near-perfect. It

:38:57.:39:00.

is very difficult for them to compete, the rest of the goal --

:39:01.:39:05.

girls. How will the venue work for Tom Daley and the ten metres

:39:06.:39:08.

synchronised tomorrow with Daniel Goodfellow, 8pm in the UK. Will it

:39:09.:39:14.

suits them? What I will say is that I've been watching Tom and Dan

:39:15.:39:17.

training and they are in fantastic form. They have not been together

:39:18.:39:20.

that long and all that but they have been putting the hard yards in,

:39:21.:39:24.

putting the work in and if they dive anything like they have in training,

:39:25.:39:28.

they will be difficult to beat. Difficult to beat? For the medals. I

:39:29.:39:34.

thought you were predicting a gold medal! No, you have the Chinese

:39:35.:39:37.

pair, they are not bullet-proof but they are the ones who are the

:39:38.:39:42.

reigning champions from all the World Series. Then the Olympic

:39:43.:39:45.

champion in there as well, in a partnership and then the Russians

:39:46.:39:50.

and it's going to be tough. But fingers crossed for a medal, 8pm

:39:51.:39:52.

tomorrow, Tom Daley. Mark? Leon was talking about the diving

:39:53.:40:01.

being affected by the wind and we spoke about the rowing being

:40:02.:40:04.

affected and the tennis, some of the play on the outside court suspended

:40:05.:40:08.

as well because of wind. In the main arena, the court is shielded by the

:40:09.:40:12.

stands, 17,000 arena so it is very well protected. When all the big

:40:13.:40:16.

stars eventually got on court, this is who progressed.

:40:17.:41:15.

A good day for Johanna Konta and Andy Murray and so far in the first

:41:16.:41:20.

couple of days, the women's rugby sevens squad have been one of the

:41:21.:41:23.

stars of the tournament as far as we're concerned. They top their

:41:24.:41:26.

group and they were unbeaten and it got them a quarterfinal against Fiji

:41:27.:41:29.

that was watched by Eddie Butler and Sir Clive Woodward.

:41:30.:41:36.

COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Clare Connor Emily Scarratt chases Katy McLean's

:41:37.:41:44.

kick and it is a monster, amazing start for Great Britain, Abbie Brown

:41:45.:41:45.

goes over. Katy McLean, the change of tactics.

:41:46.:42:01.

And Joanne Whatmore with great pace, getting the pick-up, gets the

:42:02.:42:06.

support. Brilliant bend by Alice Richardson. Having been set back on

:42:07.:42:13.

their heels by the Fijian try, Great Britain strike back.

:42:14.:42:19.

It has gone very scrappy. A chance for Great Britain to end the first

:42:20.:42:28.

half with a third school. It could be for Watmore and it is indeed. --

:42:29.:42:34.

a third score. A real bonus at the end of the first half and it is

:42:35.:42:38.

looking very good for Great Britain, a third try, 19-7 with the

:42:39.:42:44.

conversion to come. Katy McLean, brilliant positioning

:42:45.:42:51.

by Abbie Brown and that could be the try that sense Great Britain into

:42:52.:42:59.

the semifinals, into the last four. Very, very good so far. These are

:43:00.:43:02.

the quarterfinal results with wins for Australia and Canada and New

:43:03.:43:06.

Zealand, along with Great Britain and that means the semifinal line-up

:43:07.:43:11.

is as follows, Australia, the top seed, taking on Canada at 6:30pm,

:43:12.:43:17.

and then Great Britain taking on New Zealand in the other semifinal.

:43:18.:43:23.

Now as far as Britain is concerned, it's all about Adam Peaty in the 100

:43:24.:43:31.

metres breast red. 2:53am, UK time, he goes and I know of at least one

:43:32.:43:35.

woman in the Olympic park who is very excited.

:43:36.:43:39.

Just before we go, let's look at the medals table as it stands, halfway

:43:40.:43:43.

through the second day with lots of swimming action to come tonight and

:43:44.:43:46.

medals on offer but Australia, who did so badly in London, that they

:43:47.:43:50.

had a big enquiry into what was happening with their Olympic sports,

:43:51.:43:54.

are at the top of the table ahead of Italy and China. Great Britain yet

:43:55.:43:58.

to get on it but you suspect, tonight will be the night. It is

:43:59.:44:02.

well worth staying up because we have swimming finals still to come,

:44:03.:44:04.

featuring this man.

:44:05.:44:09.
