Day 3 BBC Two: 20.00-20.30 Olympics

Welcome back to Rio where we are bringing you live coverage of the

Olympic Games 2016 of the men's synchronised ten-metre platform. Tom

Daley and Daniel Goodfellow. We are at the Maria Lenk centre, the first

woman to compete in the Olympic Games in 1932. I will hand you over

to our commentators. Welcome to you joining us on BBC

Two. This is the start of the ten metres synchro. This is Shleikher

and Minibaev. The Russians opening up this second diving competition of

these Olympic Games. Inward dive in the pike position. Limited degree of

difficulty, these are the easiest dives we will see performed.

Execution marks for the Russians will be 8.5 and nine. The

synchronisation will probably be lower. They were out of line as they

entered the water. The judges marks will appear on the screen. Lines

through doesn't count, and bobs rule of thumb, if it is 50, it's good.

They've gone over that. We will get a few around 51 and above. This is a

very stacked field. Germany, E Mexico, USA, China and Great Britain

going last, which might be beneficial for Daley and Goodfellow.

Six rounds of dives, five for the women, six for the men. The women's

event taking place tomorrow. Here come Hausding and Klein. All 2.0.

Very, very experienced pair. The synchronisation from the divers was

spot on. The Russians opening up with an inward dive. Let's have a

look at this. Rotational speed, it looks like there is one diver there.

An absolute Mirror Image there. A little bit of splash from Hausding,

right of screen now. The Germans will be over 50 points as well. This

pair won in Olympic silver medal in 2008, and they've carried on.

They've been very consistent right the way through. They will be there

or thereabouts. 51 for the Germans. Now here come the boys who like to

rocket just a bit. They've scaled back their ambitions. They will get

up to 3.8 in the latter part of the competition. Lots of support for the

Mexicans in here today. They will start up the anti-after this dive.

Look at the strapping on his shoulders there. An awful lot of

tape. Let's hope he doesn't fall apart when he takes it off. Garcia

and Sanchez going for the Mexicans. Inward dive with pike. 2.0, the best

was 51. Good, clean entry. The synchronisation was off. There is a

gap in between them and I can see that in my line of sight. So, we're

looking for hitting the water at the same time which doesn't quite

happen. There is a slight gap between them so the judges will be

no lies. That is an incredible camera shot which gives you the

speed the drivers are hitting the water and. It looks quick even super

slow motion. Let's wait for the scores. It is a much of a muchness

for the first three pairs of divers. It is. It is 51.6 for the Mexicans.

We have a gloomy, cloudy sky. No rain, it is quite humid, but it

hasn't changed a great deal in the last hour. I don't think it'll

change, either. There is a little bit of wind, which is getting up.

There will be a little bit of a wind factor here. We move on to the man

who got bronze four years ago, but a different part of this time round.

Boudia partnered now by the 19-year-old, Johnson. I was watching

the Americans in training, chatting to the national performance

director, and this pair, because Boudia is individual champion, they

will be a force to be reckoned with in that, for me, is the best

opening-round dive. We will see closer to 55 on theirs. They will

get nine is on execution. Yes, they do. That is textbook stuff from our

pair from the USA. Pretty much nines across the board. 54 does count for

the Americans. And they've set the marker down. Johnson has just turned

20, by the way, partnering the 27-year-old Boudia. Now, the

Ukraine, they will be up next. The music is reverberating around the

reasons we don't know. Now ready to go. So, Dolhov and Gorshkovozov for

the Ukraine. They are having a back dive. The first two rounds are worth

2.0 degrees of difficulty. Very nice from the Ukrainians. There are two

elements of this contest, the execution of the dive, so there are

three judges on the side of the pool and three on the other, marking only

the execution of the dive. What we see here from the Ukraine is very

good execution, around about eight or 8.5. Then the synchronisation

judges are split across the pool and they are looking at the timing. So,

the crowd don't like that but I think that is fair execution and

synchronisation. Maybe they are more of an expert then I am. I think they

were getting their excitement in the early because it is the Brazilians

up next. Now, this is the Brazilians now. What a wonderful panning shot

their office Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre. There is a very nervous

Brazilian pair. The Ukraine, that was the lowest score. Nobody has

gone below 50. 50.4 for the Ukrainians. These boys might be up

early on but they don't have the programme to keep it up later. It is

a forward dive with pike. Excellent synchronisation. Execution is not

quite as sharp as what we've seen from the previous pairs of divers so

far in this competition. You can see in the slow motion, the intention is

to be doing exactly the same thing at the same time as your partner.

All the way down, just too much splash thrown up there so I don't

think they are going to get more than eight on execution. And this

partisan crowd, they can see the marks coming up! Here they come now.

Not bad, all right. 49.8 is pretty decent. We took about 50 as the mark

to aim for, so above that if you can but 49.8 is good. It is OK. These

are the ones to watch, these are the ones to beat. World champions in

2015. They've been pretty much unbeaten for the last 18 months. It

is the Chinese, of course. It is Chen and Lin, forward dive with

pike. Well, just super skilful all the way

through. Execution, bang on. Might -- nine .5s all the way.

Synchronisation is perfect. We will see the Chinese topping the

leaderboard right from the word go. Will they stay there? Look at that,

super slow motion, all the way, perfect alignment. Their bow is

slightly off but that isn't judged. So, slightly off with their

recognition of performance but, look at that, 57 on the nose! 57.0 zero.

To be better than the Americans. Early stages, of course. We have the

bigger dives to come. We have 3.8 near the end from the Mexicans.

Before that, the diver from the Brits, Daley and Goodfellow opening

up with an inward 1.5 somersault with pike. Everybody bar the

Brazilians over 50 in their first round so a top standard already

being set. Yes, solid start from our boys. What we're looking for is

vertical entry with no splash. Daniel Goodfellow delivered, Tom

Daley delivered. Let's get into this unaided bit more detail. Daniel

Goodfellow just a little further away from the diving board meaning

the judges won't give more than 8.5 on synchro. That is tough. Tough

going because if they weren't perfect alignment, they would have

got 9.5. Let's see if I'm right. Still good, 51 is still good. Look

at those execution marks. They call him rarely wrong Taylor. Not a lot

of damage, don't worry about it, early stages. 57 for China, 54 for

the US, then joint third Daley and Goodfellow, and Garcia and Sanchez.

So, lots of diving fans or those new to diving asking why the divers have

a shower afterwards. Surely it's not time to wash their hair yet. You're

right, but it is quite cold here. Diving outdoors, your divers need to

keep their muscles warm. So there's a lot of downtime in between dives

so you need to keep your muscles warm before you put your T-shirt and

tracksuit on in between which is why the divers use the showers in

between. Nothing to do with cleanliness, just comfort and

keeping muscles warm so they can perform at their best. The towels

just went to it. Round two, the Russians up first. Minibaev and

Shleikher, forward dive from them. Mistake from the Russians. You could

drive a mini car through that gap. Which means that Daley and

Goodfellow made a similar error, and the Russians have made a larger

error of the same, moving through the water at the same time but the

different distances on the diving board means the Russians will be

down. Less than 50 points is my prediction. Yes, this could be a

little opening for everybody else and set the Russians back. It is

only 2.0, the first two rounds, so you don't lose a lot of ground. 48.6

to follow their 51, so they haven't hit three figures yet. Quite a few

of the other divers will do that shortly. The ones to follow probably

well. We get into the Germans who have been so consistent. We go back

to the silver in Beijing, seventh in 2012. Sometimes their programme

comes apart but it is early stages and they are normally very sound.

Inward 1.5 somersaults for Hausding and Klein.

Synchronisation is good. My co-commentator having a bit of a

thought, too much splash being thrown up there so execution mark

will be lower. Hausding doesn't get his grab entry. Dips his head,

washes over, throws up splash and he woke to be happy with that. The

marks for his dive will reflect that. So, execution, the judges went

with them giving them eight but the synchronisation was affected by his

over rotation. The Germans and Russians matching each other, Mark

for Mark. 51 for the Germans, 51 for the Russians, and then round two, 40

8.6 for the Russians and 48.6 for the Germans. The Mexicans have a

great deal of support here and they are fun to watch. Sometimes they can

push the envelope in the latter stages. They have rendered back a

little bit, they still have the biggest dive anybody has in the

programme and they will use that as their last gambit. At this stage, it

is a rudimentary dive, by their standards, anyway. Garcia and

Sanchez with their reverse dive. They've been working very well

previously, even when they won silver in the last Olympic Games,

the Mexicans have always been weak on the opening two dives. They've

actually been mailing it down. And all the hard work is paying off. It

looks like Garcia is being held together right across A/C joint, it

is common for divers to her shoulder injuries, and he is on both

shoulders, which is why they aren't doing such a complex list of dives

as they often do. Credit where it's due, sticky tape knows sticky tape,

they are in the mix. Garcia and Sanchez. Look at the

marks coming through. Nobody has hit 50 yet in round two. Onto the

Americans' second place after round one. Boudia and Steele Johnson. A

fairly new combination. Starting to bed in. Things were really coming

together in the World Series. For those of you wondering how

synchronised divers do it, whether they are telepathic, that was

confirmation as we heard one divers say, ready, one, two, three, go.

Steele just out jumping the Olympic champion is likely there. They

seemed to hit the water at the same time. I'm not sure what they manage

to do there. He maybe was able to accelerate, a bit like Ironman.

Steve Johnson -- Steele Johnson and David Boudia are in the lead. 53.404

Boudia and Johnson. As the World Series went on, their

preparations made good for this. Let's move on to the Ukraine. Is

two, when they get it going well, let's see if they can carry on that

trend with a reverse dive. Gorshkovozov and old golf. That was

slightly better than the Americans. The reverse dive. Standing forward

but doing exactly the same movement. They seem to get their movement...

We can see whether they are touching their toes at the same time,

extending at the same time, looking back and moving their arms at the

same time in alignment. They do, synchronisation was good. Execution

was a little bit off. Almost going inside banana that as I was drifting

and watching that. There they are in the showers, warming up. That is a

new dive altogether. Side banana. Would you need custard with that?

Maybe! Russia finding themselves equally

forth. He has just celebrated his birthday. 32 last weekend. He goes

with his partner, Jackson Rondinelli, for Brazil. Reverse

dive. That was good. It is good. I was watching them in training and

they had a few mishaps, maybe we still have those to come. But so

far, so good, that is two out of two for the host nation. They are the

host nation either received an invite and quite rightly, too. This

is exactly what happens. Sorry to keep laughing but you can hear the

crowd as the marks are ratified. They are pretty good. I don't know

what they are booing for. They wanted ten is because they are the

host nation. I doubt the Chinese will...

They are more likely to done the Brazilians. As we move on to the

world champions from last year. It will all change and open up as

after we have seen this and the Brits. These are our current

leaders. Precision. Crushing the beetle as they go in. Even their

Chinese coaching staff almost on their feet. Keeping calm, centred

and focused. This is not the mirror image we saw in the first round. Yue

Lin not quite as deep as Aisen Chen but other than that, it is pretty

much perfect. The Chinese will be just a touch ahead of the American

pair. If they get 57, which it looks like they have... 114 is a big

mark-up. 9.5 and less counts. A nice symmetry to their score. Tom Daley

and Dan Goodfellow. There is a lot involved in this but it is still the

same degree of difficulty. We think they are doing a straightforward

dive but this has a bit more complexity to it for Daley and

Goodfellow. There is a little bit more that can go wrong. They will

catch the eyes of the judges if they do it well.

The reason they are doing this dive, it is a dive they need to cover, the

twist group. They have been working really hard on this and that wasn't

as good as I have seen it in training. Tom Daley closer, but is

certainly a large motorbikes sized gap so probably 8.5 if they are

lucky on the synchro. It means our boys will be ten points behind the

Chinese. Maybe just a little bit more. They are still in it. No one

has really dropped at this stage and the Brits are there or thereabouts.

China moving clear. It is a group of four countries separated by seven.

Confirmation here. Germany not getting three marks to

make it to 100 and Russia join an 99.6. A long way to go still, it

hasn't started yet. Four more rounds to come. You have seen 2.0 so far

and we will now move into the realms of four example, Russia will do a

3.4 and Germany will go to 3.2 and Mexico, 3.6, etc and all the way

through. We won't see anything below 3.0 from now on. The Chinese have a

bit of a lead at the moment but that can all change. We may even see

close to 100 points. We will let you know when that might be happening

and if it does and then a diver or a pair of divers can make a mistake

and score as little as 55, 60 and you can see how changeable the

leaderboard can be. Our boys are in bronze. All to play for. Give you an

idea, we are into the much bigger dives territory now. 3-6, this is

where things really take shape. Minibaev and Shleikher find

themselves here and this is where they could make up some ground. It

is impressive. The crowd an booing all the way through. I am not so

impressed. That is a mediocre effort from the Russians, a much cleaner

effort in training. Execution from both divers is a little off so they

will only get 7.5 and eight. I have seen them score way over 90 points

on this. They will be lucky if they could get mid-70s. Great facial

expressions on the divers' faces as they went through in super slow

motion. Here other marks. The G-force that goes on that board,

slow motion really showing you. This competition right across the

board... We are diving outdoors and it is the

Olympic final so the Russians have set the tone. Remember, we haven't

had an outdoor Olympic event since the 90s. Sydney, Athens.

The Germans back, two and a half somersault with one and a half

twists. Unfortunate for the Germans, synchronisation all the way. They

were both short to vertical which is passable but from an execution point

of view, they will only get sevens, maybe eight. Both divers short,

throwing up a load of splash towards the diving board. Not what we expect

from the Germans. Look at the expression on Klein's face. The

girls were a little here and there yesterday. Low scoring and it is

looking that way for the boys as well. Germany go into second place.

Three more rounds after this. Including the silver-medallists from

four years ago who really have some big dives and this is the first of

them. Not as big as the one at the end but this is 3.6 degrees

difficulty. Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez. When they are on it, they

are on it. That is your indication, they were

holding hands at the start and they moved through that very complex

dive. Two and a half twists and somersaults. They were a little bit

off centre but the judges do not get to see that overhead shot. You can

see there, almost spinning and twisting, will the execution marks

penalised them for that. Let's have a look at the schools might. Not so

good. A high degree of difficulty put than just shy of 18. Put them in

the lead for the moment but it is marginal. It is really bunching up.

The Brazilians in there, all seven teams outside the Brazilians could

easily be. Now the Americans. David Boudia, bronze-medallist from four

years ago. A different partner this time. Steele Johnson, trying to get

into the scheme of things. They are second place at the moment.

I was wondering what they were going to do and the US have come alive in

this third round. A low degree of difficulty compared to some of the

other dyes and some of their dives still to come but look at this

standing backward spinning forwards, safe distance from the diving board.

Ban on the money from the synchronisation point of view. This

is the marker, they will be getting over 80 points which is exactly what

they wanted. The message to the other teams. What marks will we give

for this one? The judges have given them 83.5 two. Boudia and Steele

Johnson. A lower degree of difficulty compared to some of the

other ones we have seen and that sends them flying up the standings.

The Chinese have not gone yet. As indeed have not the Ukraine, they

are up next. Gorshkovozov and Dolgov. Some extraneous noise from

outside, another problem with outdoor diving, you get a lot of

noise seeping through. We are very close to the motorway.
