Welcome back to Rio where we are bringing you live coverage of the | :00:20. | :00:27.
Olympic Games 2016 of the men's synchronised ten-metre platform. Tom | :00:28. | :00:33.
Daley and Daniel Goodfellow. We are at the Maria Lenk centre, the first | :00:34. | :00:39.
woman to compete in the Olympic Games in 1932. I will hand you over | :00:40. | :00:43.
to our commentators. Welcome to you joining us on BBC | :00:44. | :00:57.
Two. This is the start of the ten metres synchro. This is Shleikher | :00:58. | :01:11.
and Minibaev. The Russians opening up this second diving competition of | :01:12. | :01:15.
these Olympic Games. Inward dive in the pike position. Limited degree of | :01:16. | :01:21.
difficulty, these are the easiest dives we will see performed. | :01:22. | :01:27.
Execution marks for the Russians will be 8.5 and nine. The | :01:28. | :01:32.
synchronisation will probably be lower. They were out of line as they | :01:33. | :01:35.
entered the water. The judges marks will appear on the screen. Lines | :01:36. | :01:44.
through doesn't count, and bobs rule of thumb, if it is 50, it's good. | :01:45. | :01:51.
They've gone over that. We will get a few around 51 and above. This is a | :01:52. | :01:58.
very stacked field. Germany, E Mexico, USA, China and Great Britain | :01:59. | :02:04.
going last, which might be beneficial for Daley and Goodfellow. | :02:05. | :02:08.
Six rounds of dives, five for the women, six for the men. The women's | :02:09. | :02:14.
event taking place tomorrow. Here come Hausding and Klein. All 2.0. | :02:15. | :02:22.
Very, very experienced pair. The synchronisation from the divers was | :02:23. | :02:27.
spot on. The Russians opening up with an inward dive. Let's have a | :02:28. | :02:32.
look at this. Rotational speed, it looks like there is one diver there. | :02:33. | :02:38.
An absolute Mirror Image there. A little bit of splash from Hausding, | :02:39. | :02:42.
right of screen now. The Germans will be over 50 points as well. This | :02:43. | :02:54.
pair won in Olympic silver medal in 2008, and they've carried on. | :02:55. | :02:58.
They've been very consistent right the way through. They will be there | :02:59. | :03:02.
or thereabouts. 51 for the Germans. Now here come the boys who like to | :03:03. | :03:07.
rocket just a bit. They've scaled back their ambitions. They will get | :03:08. | :03:14.
up to 3.8 in the latter part of the competition. Lots of support for the | :03:15. | :03:24.
Mexicans in here today. They will start up the anti-after this dive. | :03:25. | :03:30.
Look at the strapping on his shoulders there. An awful lot of | :03:31. | :03:35.
tape. Let's hope he doesn't fall apart when he takes it off. Garcia | :03:36. | :03:41.
and Sanchez going for the Mexicans. Inward dive with pike. 2.0, the best | :03:42. | :03:52.
was 51. Good, clean entry. The synchronisation was off. There is a | :03:53. | :03:56.
gap in between them and I can see that in my line of sight. So, we're | :03:57. | :04:01.
looking for hitting the water at the same time which doesn't quite | :04:02. | :04:05.
happen. There is a slight gap between them so the judges will be | :04:06. | :04:09.
no lies. That is an incredible camera shot which gives you the | :04:10. | :04:12.
speed the drivers are hitting the water and. It looks quick even super | :04:13. | :04:17.
slow motion. Let's wait for the scores. It is a much of a muchness | :04:18. | :04:23.
for the first three pairs of divers. It is. It is 51.6 for the Mexicans. | :04:24. | :04:31.
We have a gloomy, cloudy sky. No rain, it is quite humid, but it | :04:32. | :04:36.
hasn't changed a great deal in the last hour. I don't think it'll | :04:37. | :04:42.
change, either. There is a little bit of wind, which is getting up. | :04:43. | :04:49.
There will be a little bit of a wind factor here. We move on to the man | :04:50. | :04:55.
who got bronze four years ago, but a different part of this time round. | :04:56. | :05:01.
Boudia partnered now by the 19-year-old, Johnson. I was watching | :05:02. | :05:10.
the Americans in training, chatting to the national performance | :05:11. | :05:16.
director, and this pair, because Boudia is individual champion, they | :05:17. | :05:21.
will be a force to be reckoned with in that, for me, is the best | :05:22. | :05:27.
opening-round dive. We will see closer to 55 on theirs. They will | :05:28. | :05:33.
get nine is on execution. Yes, they do. That is textbook stuff from our | :05:34. | :05:40.
pair from the USA. Pretty much nines across the board. 54 does count for | :05:41. | :05:45.
the Americans. And they've set the marker down. Johnson has just turned | :05:46. | :05:53.
20, by the way, partnering the 27-year-old Boudia. Now, the | :05:54. | :05:58.
Ukraine, they will be up next. The music is reverberating around the | :05:59. | :06:06.
reasons we don't know. Now ready to go. So, Dolhov and Gorshkovozov for | :06:07. | :06:11.
the Ukraine. They are having a back dive. The first two rounds are worth | :06:12. | :06:19.
2.0 degrees of difficulty. Very nice from the Ukrainians. There are two | :06:20. | :06:25.
elements of this contest, the execution of the dive, so there are | :06:26. | :06:29.
three judges on the side of the pool and three on the other, marking only | :06:30. | :06:33.
the execution of the dive. What we see here from the Ukraine is very | :06:34. | :06:39.
good execution, around about eight or 8.5. Then the synchronisation | :06:40. | :06:43.
judges are split across the pool and they are looking at the timing. So, | :06:44. | :06:49.
the crowd don't like that but I think that is fair execution and | :06:50. | :06:53.
synchronisation. Maybe they are more of an expert then I am. I think they | :06:54. | :06:56.
were getting their excitement in the early because it is the Brazilians | :06:57. | :07:01.
up next. Now, this is the Brazilians now. What a wonderful panning shot | :07:02. | :07:08.
their office Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre. There is a very nervous | :07:09. | :07:15.
Brazilian pair. The Ukraine, that was the lowest score. Nobody has | :07:16. | :07:23.
gone below 50. 50.4 for the Ukrainians. These boys might be up | :07:24. | :07:28.
early on but they don't have the programme to keep it up later. It is | :07:29. | :07:37.
a forward dive with pike. Excellent synchronisation. Execution is not | :07:38. | :07:44.
quite as sharp as what we've seen from the previous pairs of divers so | :07:45. | :07:49.
far in this competition. You can see in the slow motion, the intention is | :07:50. | :07:52.
to be doing exactly the same thing at the same time as your partner. | :07:53. | :07:57.
All the way down, just too much splash thrown up there so I don't | :07:58. | :08:00.
think they are going to get more than eight on execution. And this | :08:01. | :08:04.
partisan crowd, they can see the marks coming up! Here they come now. | :08:05. | :08:13.
Not bad, all right. 49.8 is pretty decent. We took about 50 as the mark | :08:14. | :08:20.
to aim for, so above that if you can but 49.8 is good. It is OK. These | :08:21. | :08:29.
are the ones to watch, these are the ones to beat. World champions in | :08:30. | :08:39.
2015. They've been pretty much unbeaten for the last 18 months. It | :08:40. | :08:46.
is the Chinese, of course. It is Chen and Lin, forward dive with | :08:47. | :08:48.
pike. Well, just super skilful all the way | :08:49. | :09:10.
through. Execution, bang on. Might -- nine .5s all the way. | :09:11. | :09:16.
Synchronisation is perfect. We will see the Chinese topping the | :09:17. | :09:19.
leaderboard right from the word go. Will they stay there? Look at that, | :09:20. | :09:24.
super slow motion, all the way, perfect alignment. Their bow is | :09:25. | :09:30.
slightly off but that isn't judged. So, slightly off with their | :09:31. | :09:36.
recognition of performance but, look at that, 57 on the nose! 57.0 zero. | :09:37. | :09:44.
To be better than the Americans. Early stages, of course. We have the | :09:45. | :09:53.
bigger dives to come. We have 3.8 near the end from the Mexicans. | :09:54. | :10:02.
Before that, the diver from the Brits, Daley and Goodfellow opening | :10:03. | :10:05.
up with an inward 1.5 somersault with pike. Everybody bar the | :10:06. | :10:10.
Brazilians over 50 in their first round so a top standard already | :10:11. | :10:18.
being set. Yes, solid start from our boys. What we're looking for is | :10:19. | :10:23.
vertical entry with no splash. Daniel Goodfellow delivered, Tom | :10:24. | :10:29.
Daley delivered. Let's get into this unaided bit more detail. Daniel | :10:30. | :10:32.
Goodfellow just a little further away from the diving board meaning | :10:33. | :10:37.
the judges won't give more than 8.5 on synchro. That is tough. Tough | :10:38. | :10:41.
going because if they weren't perfect alignment, they would have | :10:42. | :10:46.
got 9.5. Let's see if I'm right. Still good, 51 is still good. Look | :10:47. | :10:54.
at those execution marks. They call him rarely wrong Taylor. Not a lot | :10:55. | :11:01.
of damage, don't worry about it, early stages. 57 for China, 54 for | :11:02. | :11:11.
the US, then joint third Daley and Goodfellow, and Garcia and Sanchez. | :11:12. | :11:20.
So, lots of diving fans or those new to diving asking why the divers have | :11:21. | :11:25.
a shower afterwards. Surely it's not time to wash their hair yet. You're | :11:26. | :11:32.
right, but it is quite cold here. Diving outdoors, your divers need to | :11:33. | :11:35.
keep their muscles warm. So there's a lot of downtime in between dives | :11:36. | :11:42.
so you need to keep your muscles warm before you put your T-shirt and | :11:43. | :11:46.
tracksuit on in between which is why the divers use the showers in | :11:47. | :11:51.
between. Nothing to do with cleanliness, just comfort and | :11:52. | :11:53.
keeping muscles warm so they can perform at their best. The towels | :11:54. | :12:06.
just went to it. Round two, the Russians up first. Minibaev and | :12:07. | :12:10.
Shleikher, forward dive from them. Mistake from the Russians. You could | :12:11. | :12:16.
drive a mini car through that gap. Which means that Daley and | :12:17. | :12:25.
Goodfellow made a similar error, and the Russians have made a larger | :12:26. | :12:30.
error of the same, moving through the water at the same time but the | :12:31. | :12:33.
different distances on the diving board means the Russians will be | :12:34. | :12:37.
down. Less than 50 points is my prediction. Yes, this could be a | :12:38. | :12:43.
little opening for everybody else and set the Russians back. It is | :12:44. | :12:48.
only 2.0, the first two rounds, so you don't lose a lot of ground. 48.6 | :12:49. | :12:53.
to follow their 51, so they haven't hit three figures yet. Quite a few | :12:54. | :12:59.
of the other divers will do that shortly. The ones to follow probably | :13:00. | :13:06.
well. We get into the Germans who have been so consistent. We go back | :13:07. | :13:11.
to the silver in Beijing, seventh in 2012. Sometimes their programme | :13:12. | :13:18.
comes apart but it is early stages and they are normally very sound. | :13:19. | :13:24.
Inward 1.5 somersaults for Hausding and Klein. | :13:25. | :13:32.
Synchronisation is good. My co-commentator having a bit of a | :13:33. | :13:40.
thought, too much splash being thrown up there so execution mark | :13:41. | :13:47.
will be lower. Hausding doesn't get his grab entry. Dips his head, | :13:48. | :13:52.
washes over, throws up splash and he woke to be happy with that. The | :13:53. | :13:57.
marks for his dive will reflect that. So, execution, the judges went | :13:58. | :14:03.
with them giving them eight but the synchronisation was affected by his | :14:04. | :14:06.
over rotation. The Germans and Russians matching each other, Mark | :14:07. | :14:12.
for Mark. 51 for the Germans, 51 for the Russians, and then round two, 40 | :14:13. | :14:21.
8.6 for the Russians and 48.6 for the Germans. The Mexicans have a | :14:22. | :14:25.
great deal of support here and they are fun to watch. Sometimes they can | :14:26. | :14:29.
push the envelope in the latter stages. They have rendered back a | :14:30. | :14:34.
little bit, they still have the biggest dive anybody has in the | :14:35. | :14:37.
programme and they will use that as their last gambit. At this stage, it | :14:38. | :14:45.
is a rudimentary dive, by their standards, anyway. Garcia and | :14:46. | :14:51.
Sanchez with their reverse dive. They've been working very well | :14:52. | :14:55.
previously, even when they won silver in the last Olympic Games, | :14:56. | :14:58.
the Mexicans have always been weak on the opening two dives. They've | :14:59. | :15:03.
actually been mailing it down. And all the hard work is paying off. It | :15:04. | :15:09.
looks like Garcia is being held together right across A/C joint, it | :15:10. | :15:14.
is common for divers to her shoulder injuries, and he is on both | :15:15. | :15:17.
shoulders, which is why they aren't doing such a complex list of dives | :15:18. | :15:22.
as they often do. Credit where it's due, sticky tape knows sticky tape, | :15:23. | :15:26.
they are in the mix. Garcia and Sanchez. Look at the | :15:27. | :15:40.
marks coming through. Nobody has hit 50 yet in round two. Onto the | :15:41. | :15:48.
Americans' second place after round one. Boudia and Steele Johnson. A | :15:49. | :15:57.
fairly new combination. Starting to bed in. Things were really coming | :15:58. | :16:06.
together in the World Series. For those of you wondering how | :16:07. | :16:10.
synchronised divers do it, whether they are telepathic, that was | :16:11. | :16:16.
confirmation as we heard one divers say, ready, one, two, three, go. | :16:17. | :16:22.
Steele just out jumping the Olympic champion is likely there. They | :16:23. | :16:26.
seemed to hit the water at the same time. I'm not sure what they manage | :16:27. | :16:32.
to do there. He maybe was able to accelerate, a bit like Ironman. | :16:33. | :16:38.
Steve Johnson -- Steele Johnson and David Boudia are in the lead. 53.404 | :16:39. | :16:45.
Boudia and Johnson. As the World Series went on, their | :16:46. | :16:55.
preparations made good for this. Let's move on to the Ukraine. Is | :16:56. | :17:14.
two, when they get it going well, let's see if they can carry on that | :17:15. | :17:16.
trend with a reverse dive. Gorshkovozov and old golf. That was | :17:17. | :17:31.
slightly better than the Americans. The reverse dive. Standing forward | :17:32. | :17:35.
but doing exactly the same movement. They seem to get their movement... | :17:36. | :17:40.
We can see whether they are touching their toes at the same time, | :17:41. | :17:44.
extending at the same time, looking back and moving their arms at the | :17:45. | :17:50.
same time in alignment. They do, synchronisation was good. Execution | :17:51. | :17:57.
was a little bit off. Almost going inside banana that as I was drifting | :17:58. | :18:02.
and watching that. There they are in the showers, warming up. That is a | :18:03. | :18:09.
new dive altogether. Side banana. Would you need custard with that? | :18:10. | :18:10.
Maybe! Russia finding themselves equally | :18:11. | :18:31.
forth. He has just celebrated his birthday. 32 last weekend. He goes | :18:32. | :18:39.
with his partner, Jackson Rondinelli, for Brazil. Reverse | :18:40. | :18:47.
dive. That was good. It is good. I was watching them in training and | :18:48. | :18:51.
they had a few mishaps, maybe we still have those to come. But so | :18:52. | :18:58.
far, so good, that is two out of two for the host nation. They are the | :18:59. | :19:04.
host nation either received an invite and quite rightly, too. This | :19:05. | :19:10.
is exactly what happens. Sorry to keep laughing but you can hear the | :19:11. | :19:16.
crowd as the marks are ratified. They are pretty good. I don't know | :19:17. | :19:20.
what they are booing for. They wanted ten is because they are the | :19:21. | :19:26.
host nation. I doubt the Chinese will... | :19:27. | :19:33.
They are more likely to done the Brazilians. As we move on to the | :19:34. | :19:37.
world champions from last year. It will all change and open up as | :19:38. | :19:49.
after we have seen this and the Brits. These are our current | :19:50. | :19:55.
leaders. Precision. Crushing the beetle as they go in. Even their | :19:56. | :20:02.
Chinese coaching staff almost on their feet. Keeping calm, centred | :20:03. | :20:08.
and focused. This is not the mirror image we saw in the first round. Yue | :20:09. | :20:18.
Lin not quite as deep as Aisen Chen but other than that, it is pretty | :20:19. | :20:22.
much perfect. The Chinese will be just a touch ahead of the American | :20:23. | :20:28.
pair. If they get 57, which it looks like they have... 114 is a big | :20:29. | :20:42.
mark-up. 9.5 and less counts. A nice symmetry to their score. Tom Daley | :20:43. | :20:50.
and Dan Goodfellow. There is a lot involved in this but it is still the | :20:51. | :20:55.
same degree of difficulty. We think they are doing a straightforward | :20:56. | :20:58.
dive but this has a bit more complexity to it for Daley and | :20:59. | :21:04.
Goodfellow. There is a little bit more that can go wrong. They will | :21:05. | :21:10.
catch the eyes of the judges if they do it well. | :21:11. | :21:16.
The reason they are doing this dive, it is a dive they need to cover, the | :21:17. | :21:23.
twist group. They have been working really hard on this and that wasn't | :21:24. | :21:26.
as good as I have seen it in training. Tom Daley closer, but is | :21:27. | :21:35.
certainly a large motorbikes sized gap so probably 8.5 if they are | :21:36. | :21:40.
lucky on the synchro. It means our boys will be ten points behind the | :21:41. | :21:45.
Chinese. Maybe just a little bit more. They are still in it. No one | :21:46. | :21:50.
has really dropped at this stage and the Brits are there or thereabouts. | :21:51. | :22:00.
China moving clear. It is a group of four countries separated by seven. | :22:01. | :22:02.
Confirmation here. Germany not getting three marks to | :22:03. | :22:17.
make it to 100 and Russia join an 99.6. A long way to go still, it | :22:18. | :22:25.
hasn't started yet. Four more rounds to come. You have seen 2.0 so far | :22:26. | :22:33.
and we will now move into the realms of four example, Russia will do a | :22:34. | :22:39.
3.4 and Germany will go to 3.2 and Mexico, 3.6, etc and all the way | :22:40. | :22:43.
through. We won't see anything below 3.0 from now on. The Chinese have a | :22:44. | :22:48.
bit of a lead at the moment but that can all change. We may even see | :22:49. | :22:54.
close to 100 points. We will let you know when that might be happening | :22:55. | :22:58.
and if it does and then a diver or a pair of divers can make a mistake | :22:59. | :23:03.
and score as little as 55, 60 and you can see how changeable the | :23:04. | :23:08.
leaderboard can be. Our boys are in bronze. All to play for. Give you an | :23:09. | :23:14.
idea, we are into the much bigger dives territory now. 3-6, this is | :23:15. | :23:20.
where things really take shape. Minibaev and Shleikher find | :23:21. | :23:34.
themselves here and this is where they could make up some ground. It | :23:35. | :23:42.
is impressive. The crowd an booing all the way through. I am not so | :23:43. | :23:50.
impressed. That is a mediocre effort from the Russians, a much cleaner | :23:51. | :23:53.
effort in training. Execution from both divers is a little off so they | :23:54. | :24:00.
will only get 7.5 and eight. I have seen them score way over 90 points | :24:01. | :24:06.
on this. They will be lucky if they could get mid-70s. Great facial | :24:07. | :24:11.
expressions on the divers' faces as they went through in super slow | :24:12. | :24:18.
motion. Here other marks. The G-force that goes on that board, | :24:19. | :24:28.
slow motion really showing you. This competition right across the | :24:29. | :24:30.
board... We are diving outdoors and it is the | :24:31. | :24:40.
Olympic final so the Russians have set the tone. Remember, we haven't | :24:41. | :24:48.
had an outdoor Olympic event since the 90s. Sydney, Athens. | :24:49. | :24:55.
The Germans back, two and a half somersault with one and a half | :24:56. | :25:08.
twists. Unfortunate for the Germans, synchronisation all the way. They | :25:09. | :25:14.
were both short to vertical which is passable but from an execution point | :25:15. | :25:22.
of view, they will only get sevens, maybe eight. Both divers short, | :25:23. | :25:31.
throwing up a load of splash towards the diving board. Not what we expect | :25:32. | :25:37.
from the Germans. Look at the expression on Klein's face. The | :25:38. | :25:44.
girls were a little here and there yesterday. Low scoring and it is | :25:45. | :25:46.
looking that way for the boys as well. Germany go into second place. | :25:47. | :25:54.
Three more rounds after this. Including the silver-medallists from | :25:55. | :26:05.
four years ago who really have some big dives and this is the first of | :26:06. | :26:09.
them. Not as big as the one at the end but this is 3.6 degrees | :26:10. | :26:16.
difficulty. Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez. When they are on it, they | :26:17. | :26:18.
are on it. That is your indication, they were | :26:19. | :26:38.
holding hands at the start and they moved through that very complex | :26:39. | :26:43.
dive. Two and a half twists and somersaults. They were a little bit | :26:44. | :26:50.
off centre but the judges do not get to see that overhead shot. You can | :26:51. | :26:55.
see there, almost spinning and twisting, will the execution marks | :26:56. | :26:59.
penalised them for that. Let's have a look at the schools might. Not so | :27:00. | :27:03.
good. A high degree of difficulty put than just shy of 18. Put them in | :27:04. | :27:08.
the lead for the moment but it is marginal. It is really bunching up. | :27:09. | :27:17.
The Brazilians in there, all seven teams outside the Brazilians could | :27:18. | :27:32.
easily be. Now the Americans. David Boudia, bronze-medallist from four | :27:33. | :27:36.
years ago. A different partner this time. Steele Johnson, trying to get | :27:37. | :27:38.
into the scheme of things. They are second place at the moment. | :27:39. | :27:49.
I was wondering what they were going to do and the US have come alive in | :27:50. | :27:55.
this third round. A low degree of difficulty compared to some of the | :27:56. | :27:58.
other dyes and some of their dives still to come but look at this | :27:59. | :28:02.
standing backward spinning forwards, safe distance from the diving board. | :28:03. | :28:06.
Ban on the money from the synchronisation point of view. This | :28:07. | :28:11.
is the marker, they will be getting over 80 points which is exactly what | :28:12. | :28:14.
they wanted. The message to the other teams. What marks will we give | :28:15. | :28:21.
for this one? The judges have given them 83.5 two. Boudia and Steele | :28:22. | :28:27.
Johnson. A lower degree of difficulty compared to some of the | :28:28. | :28:31.
other ones we have seen and that sends them flying up the standings. | :28:32. | :28:38.
The Chinese have not gone yet. As indeed have not the Ukraine, they | :28:39. | :28:46.
are up next. Gorshkovozov and Dolgov. Some extraneous noise from | :28:47. | :28:54.
outside, another problem with outdoor diving, you get a lot of | :28:55. | :28:58.
noise seeping through. We are very close to the motorway. | :28:59. | :29:14.
CLARE BALDING: We will shortly see Dan Goodfellow and Tom Daley, that | :29:15. | :29:21.
will be over at BBC One. We are leaving you | :29:22. | :29:22. |
