Well come back to coverage of the Olympic Games here in Rio. We have

:00:22.:00:30.

rejoined the gymnastics competition. This is the men's team final. Torque

:00:31.:00:41.

COMMENTATOR: Russia is leading this men's team final after four

:00:42.:00:45.

rotations ahead of Japan. They are in second. Great Britain at the

:00:46.:00:49.

moment or in third. Still a very, very strong piece of apparatus to

:00:50.:00:53.

come, that is the poll halls. They have finished on the floor, they

:00:54.:01:01.

have done incredibly well. -- the pole horse is to come. We will get a

:01:02.:01:06.

better idea of how things stand. But this being the team final, there is

:01:07.:01:11.

a lot at stake, huge pressure. Every country puts up three gymnasts, and

:01:12.:01:18.

every single sport counts. If you have a fall, that all goes towards

:01:19.:01:24.

the team total score. At the moment, things are looking good for Great

:01:25.:01:28.

Britain. But they just have to sit and wait for now. There is a lot of

:01:29.:01:33.

gymnastics gold to go, even before their final pleas of apparatus. --

:01:34.:01:39.

still to go. Brazil are going to be on the floor, Germany are going to

:01:40.:01:43.

be on the pole horse, the USA will be on the parallel bars and Japan,

:01:44.:01:48.

you can see here, just chalking up and ready to go for the high bar.

:01:49.:01:59.

Kato is just preparing himself. The Nakano will round things off. It's

:02:00.:02:07.

worth bearing in mind that Uchimura, the current world champion, fell in

:02:08.:02:12.

qualification. And he also felt in the team final back in 2012 in

:02:13.:02:18.

London -- he also fell. No doubt he will be trying to put that behind

:02:19.:02:29.

him. Right he Kato -- Roy he Kato will be the first one up, the most

:02:30.:02:32.

difficult task for the Japanese team. He tries to butt out of his

:02:33.:02:41.

mind the fact that they are going for their 17 title in the countries

:02:42.:02:44.

will he tries to put out of his mind.

:02:45.:02:47.

A slight, light gymnast. You can see how the swing changes to give the

:02:48.:03:05.

lift. The back somersault over the bar in the straight position, that

:03:06.:03:10.

is the hardest to do. That was rather short of a handstand, that

:03:11.:03:18.

there are wet. But a lovely straight bit of action there over the bar. --

:03:19.:03:24.

the payroll wet. A combination of pirouettes there. All pirouettes

:03:25.:03:32.

into the hop over the bar. Ads in the upstart. He really has enough

:03:33.:03:39.

swing to be able to wall the time generates wing. Two twists, two

:03:40.:03:46.

somersaults, great landing under so much pressure at this moment, these

:03:47.:03:52.

gymnasts. Tiny errors, but a good start for Japan. Yeah, the first of

:03:53.:03:58.

three gymnasts, he breathes a Saif Badar leave, he sits down, job done.

:03:59.:04:04.

Well done that man -- he breathes a sigh of relief. Each or will follow

:04:05.:04:11.

him, Yusuke Tanaka will be the next athlete up -- Uchimura will follow

:04:12.:04:18.

him. A few moments in that routine where I wasn't sure he would be able

:04:19.:04:22.

to catch the bar again. The first man up, really going for it.

:04:23.:04:32.

What a landing! Japan, the current world champions. He got silver at

:04:33.:04:50.

the Olympics, they have had six golds, three silvers and two

:04:51.:04:56.

bronzes. They made the podium in 12 of the last 14 Olympic Games. Some

:04:57.:05:01.

statistic, that. Not the colour they wanted, though. Mariano of Brazil

:05:02.:05:09.

now. Second of the Brazilian gymnasts. He is in the floor final,

:05:10.:05:18.

stand-by. Some impressive stuff. Very impressive double somersault to

:05:19.:05:19.

start. That was very controlled. I like the handstand like that with

:05:20.:05:35.

a good, straight back. Lovely extension through the shoulders and

:05:36.:05:37.

the feet. Very precise in all his movements on

:05:38.:05:51.

the floor. Oh, but that was the front somersault half-tone straight

:05:52.:05:58.

out of the floor area. -- half turn. That will be a .3 deduction. Nicely

:05:59.:06:03.

done. Good combination. A path of the cheeks. Come off for

:06:04.:06:20.

the big final. Tumble, the full twisting double backs, really nicely

:06:21.:06:24.

performed. Shame that he just had that bout in the middle, but the

:06:25.:06:31.

home crowd thoroughly appreciating this performance. Well, this is the

:06:32.:06:36.

first time that Brazil have ever company did in an Olympic final. --

:06:37.:06:46.

competed. Christopher Brooks now on the keyboard is for the USA. -- the

:06:47.:06:50.

key bars. A really nice start. Slightly clipped off on bar there,

:06:51.:07:02.

we will see what the judges give him. -- one bar. There will be quite

:07:03.:07:14.

a few deductions. Nice splits. Moving over the other bars. Big tip

:07:15.:07:18.

out into the middle. Nice dismount. Muscled his way

:07:19.:07:33.

through. He did, he looked like he was fighting the whole way through

:07:34.:07:37.

that, but it was green. Maybe a few deductions. This is where it becomes

:07:38.:07:43.

really interesting, the difficulty in the execution, how far do you

:07:44.:07:47.

push it? What Ayew capable of and what are you going to lose by

:07:48.:07:52.

executing difficult moves? -- what are you capable of. A lot of guys do

:07:53.:07:57.

really high routines that cannot do them cleanly. It is that fine

:07:58.:08:01.

balance of star value and the execution to come up with it

:08:02.:08:05.

perfectly. Chris Brooks, the second of the gymnasts from the USA. The

:08:06.:08:15.

Nel Ava is yet to go. A score of 14.54 Arthur Mariano. Look at when

:08:16.:08:19.

he burst onto the scene in Glasgow, who is this kid? -- NL Leiva is to

:08:20.:08:23.

go. Suki Tanaka rounds up Japan's high

:08:24.:08:42.

Bart -- Yusuke Tanaka. -- high bar. Is it going to be a high 15? The

:08:43.:08:47.

pressure is on here for the Japanese team. It is their best performer on

:08:48.:08:55.

the high bar. A lovely straight somersault over the bar with the

:08:56.:08:59.

bold twist. Such a difficult element we have seen in performance, so well

:09:00.:09:06.

in this championship. Nicely into the handstand, into the full

:09:07.:09:09.

twisting back somersault, over the bar. When you add those elements

:09:10.:09:14.

together, it is some impressive. And the release.

:09:15.:09:24.

Full turn, just a little bit late on a couple of the turns, need to try

:09:25.:09:32.

and be as near to hand down as possible. I love the technique on

:09:33.:09:36.

that double twist. -- as near to handstand. A little hop on landing,

:09:37.:09:41.

but that was great work under pressure. Yusuke Tanaka went all out

:09:42.:09:49.

the difficulty. He knew he had to make up for his hick up. The Nel

:09:50.:09:55.

Leiva. Renowned for this beautiful gymnastic swing. It is unbelievable,

:09:56.:10:08.

almost perfection. -- Danell Leyva. Long swing, full-term. There is the

:10:09.:10:14.

upper arm element to make sure that he fulfils the requirements.

:10:15.:10:21.

Big dismount. Wow. Well, it is all happening here in this Rio arena. Oh

:10:22.:10:34.

my word, former world champion, we will see him again in the final.

:10:35.:10:43.

Well, what is going to happen on the last these evaporators? Who knows?

:10:44.:10:47.

All we know is it is going to be very, very close -- piece of

:10:48.:10:48.

apparatus. That is fabulous, isn't it, than? It

:10:49.:11:02.

is. Nobody works and the bar like Danell Leyva. He obviously works to

:11:03.:11:06.

his strength by using the full amount on the bar. He didn't expect

:11:07.:11:11.

to be here, the only reason he is in the US team is because somebody had

:11:12.:11:15.

an injury, he has gone and other last-minute and got to a couple of

:11:16.:11:20.

individual apparatus finals. He has got something to prove, he wants to

:11:21.:11:23.

show that he deserves to be in the team, and obviously he is doing

:11:24.:11:28.

that. This is the thing, there is so much competition to get into these

:11:29.:11:35.

teams, 15.1 Tanaka. You know all too well, it is the mental wall those

:11:36.:11:40.

gymnasts who are sitting at home and watching this now in Great Britain

:11:41.:11:44.

that have been such a big part -- it is testament. That competitive

:11:45.:11:48.

spirit has made the British team what it is today. It is. And with

:11:49.:11:55.

GB, it is a spirit that we have got within the team, it is why we do so

:11:56.:11:59.

well, such belief and togetherness, we are the best of friends. There is

:12:00.:12:03.

no bitterness between any of the guys, even some of the guys at home,

:12:04.:12:08.

there are group of 15 of us who are working so hard. I think the

:12:09.:12:11.

strength and depth is what is making us such a great team. Well, we have

:12:12.:12:17.

got a chance to see how Max Whitlock got on on the floor. He is in the

:12:18.:12:23.

floor final. He is renowned for his fabulous twisting. You saw that the

:12:24.:12:27.

full twisting in front into the 2.5 twist. Look at that, 3.5 twist in

:12:28.:12:38.

the front semi with half-tone. -- half turn. Lovely and original

:12:39.:12:42.

section on the floor. Fabulous style. Keeps inside that

:12:43.:12:58.

floor area, but uses the whole of it, that is the requirement. Lovely

:12:59.:13:07.

2.5 front 1.5. This is such a difficult routine because it has got

:13:08.:13:13.

so many twists in it. But he is stylish, well extended. He holds his

:13:14.:13:20.

shape. One more landing needed. There it is. The triple twist. These

:13:21.:13:27.

British lads have given it all here. This level of difficulty, I mean,

:13:28.:13:32.

they make it look so easy. The hours, the effort that is going into

:13:33.:13:36.

this, and they put everything, everything, the sacrifice to do

:13:37.:13:41.

their very best for their country and try their upmost to get this

:13:42.:13:46.

model. Goodness me, lads, you are doing yourself and us proud -- to

:13:47.:13:50.

get this medal. They really are. They haven't put a foot wrong, that

:13:51.:13:55.

is all you can really ask for. This is what the team final is all about.

:13:56.:14:00.

Whoever goes the most clean, who is the most consistent, is going to be

:14:01.:14:06.

up there. One more test. They have got to keep concentrating for one

:14:07.:14:10.

more rotation. Was that a little zero to the players there, -- a

:14:11.:14:16.

little zero. Attention now turns to pummel halls. We will have a look at

:14:17.:14:27.

Japan -- pummel horse. They are genius at what they are doing. Nice,

:14:28.:14:32.

easy start. Composed and ready for this. Huge point between the bars.

:14:33.:14:46.

Another double somersault. This is why he is one of the best in the

:14:47.:14:57.

world on this piece of apparatus. Lost a little bit of strength there.

:14:58.:15:04.

And then the lovely double pike between the bars. Moving on to the

:15:05.:15:14.

end. Swinging one end to the other, a little flick of the head to show

:15:15.:15:17.

he is in control. A swing to handstand, double front

:15:18.:15:38.

with half turn, that is a brilliant routine. Good enough to push them

:15:39.:15:44.

higher and higher up the field. They are so good as a team on this

:15:45.:16:03.

piece of apparatus. All three gymnasts had a start score over

:16:04.:16:17.

seven. 7.4, seven and 7.2. 16.16 the You Hao, and we will get

:16:18.:16:21.

confirmation of how things look with one piece of apparatus to go. It is

:16:22.:16:26.

all change again, Japan lead, Russia now in second, so Japan 0.2 ahead of

:16:27.:16:32.

Russia, China 0.7 off that top spot now. Great Britain are in fourth,

:16:33.:16:43.

United States fifth. Hugely tense and exciting men's team competition

:16:44.:16:47.

here. We will continue the coverage until 10.30, and then we will switch

:16:48.:16:53.

to BBC One, probably for the conclusion to see whether we can get

:16:54.:16:59.

the bronze medal. Also at 10:30pm, Great Britain will take on Canada

:17:00.:17:02.

for a bronze medal in the rugby sevens, that will be live on BBC

:17:03.:17:12.

Four. Japan on floor. Crucial, this, Kenzo Shirai, doing everything he

:17:13.:17:21.

can to keep Japan ahead of the world in the rest of this men's team

:17:22.:17:31.

final. A twisting double tuck as well as multiple twisting

:17:32.:17:36.

somersaults. I think this will be his last tumble. Was that four? Yes,

:17:37.:17:48.

I think it was, he finishes with a quad twist. They are packing in the

:17:49.:17:55.

difficulty now. Job done, that is it. He can sit down and just wait

:17:56.:18:00.

and wonder. Has he done enough to help Japan get that gold medal that

:18:01.:18:05.

his team so desperately want? They have had six golds in the past, but

:18:06.:18:15.

it was a long time ago. Five on the trot in the 60s and 70s. This is why

:18:16.:18:23.

he is the reigning world champion, he is so good. The combination of

:18:24.:18:27.

twists that he does in his routine, but also a triple twist and double

:18:28.:18:33.

tuck, that is unbelievable. In qualification, he had a slight error

:18:34.:18:38.

on one of his tumbles, and only just made the final, but I think he has

:18:39.:18:43.

put that behind him, looking towards trying to get that gold medal as a

:18:44.:18:51.

team. Just give you idea of timings, Brazil are on pommel horse at the

:18:52.:18:57.

moment, all three of them will go first and then Great Britain will be

:18:58.:19:01.

up shortly, so probably in around 12 minutes, we will start to turn our

:19:02.:19:06.

attentions towards the GB effort on the last piece of apparatus. Britain

:19:07.:19:12.

currently fourth behind China, Russia in second, and Japan on the

:19:13.:19:16.

fifth piece apparatus are leading the field. So, sure -- Shirai pacing

:19:17.:19:32.

around, just hoping. They took silver at the last Olympics in 2012.

:19:33.:19:42.

Rejoin the USA on high bar. This is such a close competition. USA,

:19:43.:19:49.

tenths of a point behind Great Britain. There is also much to work

:19:50.:19:58.

for her. Chris Brooks, 29 years old, 6.7 difficulty but he can go higher.

:19:59.:20:04.

And he probably well. One arm long swing, hand back on. Expect some

:20:05.:20:11.

explosive stuff. Full turn, hop over the bar, into a catch with half

:20:12.:20:15.

turn, stalled a little bit, but difficult work. Super straight catch

:20:16.:20:23.

action, and again with the half turn, he uses that so effectively.

:20:24.:20:28.

Lovely straight arms on the catches. Up into the double twist this mount,

:20:29.:20:41.

just the littlest hop. He steered away from too much correcting work,

:20:42.:20:45.

which means he doesn't get lots of deductions were late turns. That was

:20:46.:20:50.

exciting stuff. I tell you what, they know how to light a fire in

:20:51.:20:54.

that team, dead they? Last time they got a medal was back in Beijing,

:20:55.:20:59.

they got the bronze. They are fighting for everything now. This

:21:00.:21:04.

last piece of apparatus, look at Kenzo Shirai, he is just hoping.

:21:05.:21:10.

16.13, a huge score for him. Absolutely huge. Only the second

:21:11.:21:15.

time we have seen a score over 16 on the men's side here in Rio.

:21:16.:21:21.

Everybody is watching each of their team-mates with hope in a hearts.

:21:22.:21:29.

This is the final piece of apparatus, and everyone is in with a

:21:30.:21:32.

shout of getting a medal, they just need to go through their routines,

:21:33.:21:36.

they mustn't allow any errors to give themselves the best shot. What

:21:37.:21:40.

an amazing position to be in. The first six teams could medal.

:21:41.:21:49.

And we said at the beginning, it could go literally anyway, and we

:21:50.:21:52.

would never have predicted it would be so close.

:21:53.:22:01.

Well, Danell Leyva will be the last gymnast at ago. 15.14 Chris Brooks.

:22:02.:22:26.

I hope we get to see Leyva. He is in the high bar final, he has been on

:22:27.:22:31.

form on high bar here. Current world silver medallist, and he has a 7.3

:22:32.:22:40.

difficulty, so if you thought what Chris Brooks did was impressive,

:22:41.:22:43.

this is even harder, and he were held back, because he knows if he

:22:44.:22:49.

goes all out and he hit is, the USA are in with a chance of bronze. Here

:22:50.:23:02.

we go. Fireworks straight up, beautifully caught, lovely straight

:23:03.:23:09.

arms. Here comes the big element. Lovely layout, just a bit of a bent

:23:10.:23:17.

arm on the swing out. Now the tap with the full twist, full treks that

:23:18.:23:26.

time. -- full stretch. Very nippy with the pirouette. Oh no, has gone!

:23:27.:23:35.

I was about to say super catch, and I can't believe it. That was one of

:23:36.:23:40.

the more straightforward skills. He has come off, and goodness me, Leyva

:23:41.:23:47.

with his head down, I'm not sure if he is nursing a finger or thumb, or

:23:48.:23:52.

if he is just heartbroken. Too disappointed to get up. He cannot

:23:53.:23:57.

believe having gone through the complicated releases that that has

:23:58.:24:03.

happened. I think he thought he was an anti-war axed, it was his final

:24:04.:24:08.

release, and he has just come off at the bottom, it is such a shame.

:24:09.:24:14.

APPLAUSE He had his hands right over.

:24:15.:24:18.

It was just like they slipped through the bottom. I think he

:24:19.:24:23.

relaxed to early thinking he was off. Well, what a shame for him now

:24:24.:24:31.

to be going through these moves. There we go, that is how he meant to

:24:32.:24:40.

do it. I would have been sure he would be able to go through for the

:24:41.:24:49.

team. Lovely dismount, good landing, but the one large deduction opens

:24:50.:24:52.

the window a tiny bit for the other teams. And the absolute opposite of

:24:53.:24:58.

what you would expect from a US gymnast nailing a landing there, at

:24:59.:24:59.

a dejection. Kohei Uchimura Jim now. Such style,

:25:00.:25:20.

such lightness. Half twist into one and a half, front into two and a

:25:21.:25:27.

half twists. Moves across the floor so lightly, so confidently. Two and

:25:28.:25:34.

a half in double twisting front. There was a time we were just amazed

:25:35.:25:41.

by a double twisting front. Double twist, double back, he really is

:25:42.:25:45.

pacey in his routine, no stopping in the corner. As soon as he hits one

:25:46.:25:49.

move, out to the next. Extension out of the top position

:25:50.:26:07.

before he rolled. He knows this is so important. Lovely left, super

:26:08.:26:15.

triple twist, a tiny bounce, but he has given his all. Six pieces he has

:26:16.:26:22.

done for the team tonight. Kohei Uchimura can do no more, he follows

:26:23.:26:32.

Kenzo Shirai, and that is it now, Kohei Uchimura just has to sit with

:26:33.:26:36.

his team-mates and watch Russia and hope that they have done enough.

:26:37.:26:42.

So, Russia will wrap up their competition on floor following

:26:43.:26:49.

Japan, but that was just beautiful as far as Uchimura is concerned.

:26:50.:26:56.

Straight over to Russia, all the best, we are done.

:26:57.:27:14.

CLARE BALDING: Just to warn you that coverage of the finale of this

:27:15.:27:19.

competition will be switching to BBC One very shortly. Live coverage now

:27:20.:27:25.

on BBC Four of Great Britain in the women's rugby sevens coming up,

:27:26.:27:28.

their bronze medal match against Canada.

:27:29.:27:36.

MATT BAKER: All three scores will count towards the team total, and

:27:37.:27:48.

there is that score, 15.6, that puts them on a total of 274. The question

:27:49.:27:55.

is, can Russia beat it? Russia need an average of 15.8. That

:27:56.:28:20.

is a big ask even for them. We have had Kenzo Shirai scoring 16, but

:28:21.:28:23.

otherwise, they have been made 15 is. They made some errors in

:28:24.:28:31.

qualification, they can add that a little bit, but we also have China

:28:32.:28:35.

on the high bar. We have, and Great Britain on pommel horse. And if

:28:36.:28:41.

Russia go a little bit haywire on the floor, which we know that they

:28:42.:28:45.

can do, and they are renowned for it, to be honest, then Great Britain

:28:46.:28:48.

in with a very good chance of silver. They have only ever had

:28:49.:28:54.

bronze, bronze in 2012, bronze 100 years before that. So can they
