Good morning. As you've been hearing, it was a gold rush for

:00:26.:00:29.

Great Britain yesterday, who are now sitting pretty in fifth on the

medal table. There is plenty to After three Olympic silvers, could

:01:01.:01:04.

our first glimpse of Jess Ennis on the track as the heptathlon starts

:01:04.:01:10.

in just over an hour's time. And Larry Godfrey is shooting for not

:01:10.:01:15.

:01:15.:01:23.

world number five. That is starting right now, so let's go to Lord's to

:01:23.:01:27.

see Great Britain's sole survivor in artery. Larry Godfrey is the

:04:45.:04:51.

incredibly different. Khairul Anuar Mohamad's is very relaxed, good

:04:51.:04:57.

timing. Larry is very powerful. Which means for him his timing

:04:57.:05:01.

isn't crucial because it can really hold his form together, but the

:05:01.:05:06.

better timing that we see Larry using, as in the timing it takes

long wait. I know it doesn't look that far on your TV set. They are

:10:23.:10:28.

only people to beat him were the three Korean men. Korea dominate

shooters. Carol and one Mohammed is the current Asian champion in the

:18:44.:18:48.

stadium, in front of the home crowd was really incredible, so well done

:18:48.:18:55.

indeed, Mohamad. Larry, of course, he will be disappointed not to go

:18:55.:18:58.

through, but he should be proud of the game that he brought to the

:18:59.:19:04.

stadium today. He shot well, good timing, we are really proud of you,

:19:04.:19:08.

Larry, thank you for representing the country. 15 arrows were not

:19:09.:19:14.

enough, the 16th was everything. It hit the gold, but he knew at that

:19:14.:19:18.

the one arrow that counted it was not going to be enough, the nine

:19:46.:19:50.

the artery competition, and Larry Godfrey is with Sonali Shah. Tough

:19:50.:19:55.

luck, all down to one arrow in the end. That is what archery is about!

:19:55.:20:00.

I woke up this morning feeling good, the same as I did on Monday, I went

:20:00.:20:03.

out and did my best with the feeling that if it was met Bibi, it

:20:03.:20:11.

was meant to be. It was close. was your toughest match on paper.

:20:11.:20:18.

Yeah, all the Archers are of a great standard, so what can you do?

:20:18.:20:21.

You have really loved the crowd here, you have been entertaining

:20:22.:20:25.

them not just for the shooting, with your antics, the imitation

:20:25.:20:30.

cover-drive. Do you know, this is the best arena I have ever shot in.

:20:30.:20:36.

The lanes only come round once every four years, it is fun, the

:20:36.:20:42.

crowd have been great. -- the Olympics. It is a great atmosphere,

:20:42.:20:46.

I am really happy and thankful for all the public to get behind me,

:20:46.:20:51.

you know. Your third Olympic Games, not the result he would have wanted,

:20:51.:20:56.

but does it rate right at there? Definitely, archery is a funny

:20:56.:20:59.

sport, you have got to believe that you can win it, but anything can

:20:59.:21:05.

happen. I took it down to one arrow and he smashed it, didn't he?

:21:05.:21:10.

certainly enjoyed watching you, thank you. Larry Godfrey, who said

:21:11.:21:17.

artery is a funny spot, a dramatic way to start today. -- archery.

:21:17.:21:22.

Great Britain are out, but the medals matches will be taking place

:21:22.:21:25.

at 3:20pm this afternoon. Plenty more on offer this morning, live

:21:25.:21:30.

sport including badminton at Wembley, that is on BBC Three,

:21:30.:21:35.

Indonesia against Denmark in the mixed doubles bronze medal matches.

:21:35.:21:38.

Meanwhile, down to the last 16 in a beach volleyball, disappoint but

:21:39.:21:48.
:21:49.:21:49.

yesterday Paul Great Britain, but a Later on we will have all the

:21:49.:21:54.

build-up to at athletics that is going to be starting in the stadium,

:21:54.:21:57.

the Olympic Stadium behind me. Also we are going to be showing you the

:21:57.:22:00.

build-up to the rowing finals and hearing from Katherine Grainger,

:22:00.:22:06.

but today it is the first sporting action inside the stadium, because

:22:06.:22:09.

the athletics will start, and right at the beginning of the schedule is

:22:09.:22:12.

the heptathlon, the gruelling women's events which will take

:22:12.:22:19.

place over the next two days. The star attraction is the one Jessica

:22:19.:22:23.

Ennis, so can the poster girl for London 2012 deliver on the bigger

:22:23.:22:33.
:22:33.:22:50.

What is it like being one of the faces of the Games? Yeah, it is

:22:50.:22:54.

definitely a unique experience. It has been a man here, but really

:22:54.:22:59.

exciting, and it is just crazy, seeing all the campaigns, the

:22:59.:23:03.

things that have been up around the country and in London, but I feel

:23:03.:23:07.

very privileged to be part of the home games in a big way, and I just

:23:07.:23:10.

want to make sure I perform and have a great couple of days out on

:23:10.:23:16.

the track. With privilege comes pressure. For me personally, it is

:23:16.:23:20.

nice pressure. I have said before that it is not so much, I don't

:23:20.:23:25.

know, the negativity that you feel, you feel the positive side of it,

:23:25.:23:28.

people supporting you, everyone is going to be cheering for you and

:23:28.:23:32.

wishing for you to do well. Having the crowd behind you in the stadium

:23:32.:23:36.

really lifts you, so it is a massive advantage for the GB

:23:36.:23:42.

athletes. The girl from the city of steel came to Berlin hunting for

:23:42.:23:48.

gold, and she has done it! He won the world title in Berlin, and

:23:48.:23:55.

there was a peeling that people were putting the London 2012 medal

:23:55.:23:58.

around your neck three years out. Yes! Just one sub-par showing with

:23:58.:24:03.

the Javelin last year and she lost the world title to that Anna Church

:24:03.:24:10.

ever. I think that it changed the way that people look at heptathlon,

:24:10.:24:15.

how difficult it is going to be. Things happen for a reason, you

:24:15.:24:19.

have got to look at the events in that way, and Daegu, although I

:24:19.:24:24.

really wanted to win, I came out on top, in a way it was a blessing in

:24:24.:24:29.

disguise, and it gave me the fuel in my stomach to really keep

:24:29.:24:32.

driving hard and make sure that everything is in the right place

:24:32.:24:37.

for London. Last year, I came away really frustrated with Javelin,

:24:37.:24:39.

knowing that I needed to make some changes in that event, so being

:24:40.:24:44.

able to go back to Sheffield and work with Michel and address those

:24:44.:24:50.

problems, and then come out knowing that I need to get a good throw in

:24:50.:24:53.

to prove to myself and two other people that it is not a major

:24:53.:24:57.

problem, throwing 47 was a brilliant start, so I was really

:24:57.:25:01.

pleased at that. I'm glad I have been able to work on it to make a

:25:01.:25:11.
:25:11.:25:12.

lot stronger this year. She beat her rivals with a new record four

:25:12.:25:18.

years after a serious foot injury cruel to her -- cruelly robbed her

:25:18.:25:22.

in Beijing. It has been such a long build up, and I know more than

:25:22.:25:26.

anyone that things can go wrong, with what happened in 2008 before

:25:26.:25:29.

Beijing, and I just want to make sure that every session goes right

:25:30.:25:34.

and that there are no major problems. To actually be here now,

:25:34.:25:38.

in the position that I am in, healthy, looking forward to it, I

:25:38.:25:42.

feel really privilege, and I cannot believe how difficult -- different

:25:42.:25:46.

it is four years down the line. Olympic history beckons. Kelly

:25:46.:25:53.

Sotherton was our last heptathlon medallist in 2004. Four years

:25:53.:25:59.

earlier, Denise Lewis heroically hobbled to gold. And in 1972, there

:25:59.:26:07.

was Mary. Come on, Mary, you need the run of your life! Peters, the

:26:07.:26:10.

Northern Irish treasure. Now it is for Jessica Ennis to further enrich

:26:10.:26:15.

this tradition, and she is first up. It is nice to be on at the

:26:15.:26:21.

beginning, we fly in a few days before, so it is nice to get it out

:26:21.:26:24.

of the way and then support the team and enjoy watching everybody

:26:24.:26:29.

else compete. I hope to go out on Friday and put some good

:26:29.:26:34.

performances down and see what I can do. Is it one of those things

:26:34.:26:39.

that he will only appreciate after the events? Yeah, I think so,

:26:39.:26:44.

because it is such a busy leader, there is a lot going on, the nerves

:26:44.:26:47.

and adrenalin and everything kicks in. -- lead-up. Definitely after

:26:47.:26:53.

that will be the time you look back and realise how big it was, you

:26:53.:26:56.

know, you go back and see how you felt. It will be amazing to look

:26:56.:27:02.

back on. How amazing Major's depend on the colour of Jessica's medal.

:27:02.:27:09.

Bath made just a pen. Whatever happens, it will be the intense

:27:09.:27:14.

couple of days. In Sydney, the poster girl for the heptathlon was

:27:14.:27:18.

Denise Lewis, who is here with me now. How do you think that Jess

:27:18.:27:21.

Ennis is going to cope with the expectation that is on her this

:27:21.:27:25.

time? I think she will cope very well, I really do. In the lead-up,

:27:25.:27:31.

there has been so much attention on her, which she has taken in her

:27:31.:27:34.

stride, because at the end of the day she is profiling herself,

:27:34.:27:38.

profiling the event, but when it comes down to what will happen in

:27:38.:27:43.

the Olympic Stadium, she will be very businesslike, and I have a lot

:27:43.:27:46.

of confidence in her and her ability. She has progressed nicely

:27:46.:27:52.

the last couple of years. She has a steely determination that we see

:27:53.:27:56.

are often when the chips are down, and I think it is going to be

:27:56.:28:00.

fantastic. Of all the events happening in the stadium over the

:28:00.:28:03.

next few days, the heptathlon is right up there in terms of how

:28:03.:28:07.

gruelling it is, seven different disciplines. Seven different

:28:07.:28:11.

disciplines, two very long days of competition. The girls will have

:28:11.:28:15.

been away from 6am this morning, going through breakfast,

:28:15.:28:19.

visualising what they need to do, and you know, it is how you manage

:28:19.:28:22.

yourself between the events that really makes the difference,

:28:22.:28:27.

keeping your mind focused on the job, but at the same time allowing

:28:27.:28:30.

yourself to switch off and just relax and take the tension out of

:28:30.:28:35.

the body. The first we will see is the 100m hurdles and the high jump,

:28:35.:28:40.

how does she bear in knows? Great events for Jess, she is one of the

:28:40.:28:44.

strongest hurdlers in the field, and she will be going in the last

:28:44.:28:48.

heat. She will want to get up to a good start, get rid of all that

:28:48.:28:52.

nervous tension, but it is a great event for her. She will get such a

:28:52.:28:56.

roar from the crowd, and that will really spur her on. The high jump

:28:56.:29:02.

equally has proven to be one of the best events. She holds the equal

:29:02.:29:05.

record for the high jump, the British record for the high jump,

:29:05.:29:10.

and she will want to make sure that is a good advent for her.

:29:10.:29:13.

Psychologically it will really help. The pressure is tricky, because

:29:13.:29:16.

some people think that all she needs to do is turn up and waved to

:29:16.:29:22.

get a gold medal, but there is some really tough competition at there.

:29:22.:29:26.

Yes, Tatyana Chernova is the reigning world champion from last

:29:26.:29:32.

year in Daegu, who beat Jess, and I think that Falk Jess was a real

:29:32.:29:37.

wake-up call. There's also Nataliya Dobrynska, who was the reigning

:29:37.:29:42.

Olympic champion. She has had its trials and tribulations, lost their

:29:42.:29:48.

coach and husband this year in March. So she has got a point to

:29:48.:29:53.

prove. But I think Jess, she has the edge, there is something about

:29:53.:29:56.

consistency in heptathlon which she has proved time and again that she

:29:56.:30:00.

can deliver. But let's not forget the two other heptathletes that you

:30:01.:30:08.

mentioned earlier, Katarina Johnson-Thompson... Very young, 19.

:30:08.:30:12.

19, and she did an amazing personal best to qualify for the Games, so

:30:12.:30:17.

watch out for her, because she is likely in the next few years to

:30:17.:30:22.

take over Jess's mantle. And Louise Hazel as well, fellow Birchfield

:30:22.:30:27.

Harrier. We will be seen or three inaction very soon. The first event

:30:27.:30:32.

is the 100m hurdles, and it begins within the hour. What about the

:30:32.:30:36.

bigger picture with the athletics team? Charles van Commenee is

:30:36.:30:40.

targeting eight medals, double the total from Beijing, so who are the

:30:40.:30:50.
:30:50.:31:27.

Mo Farah takes the gold for Great Britain, and Thompson makes it in

:31:27.:31:35.

second. Greene get the gold! Perri Shakes-Drayton has taken this field

:31:35.:31:45.
:31:45.:31:45.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:31:45.:32:27.

Great Britain has found another Just some of the faces you will be

seen in action in the next few days, Kiwayu looking out for? Where do we

:32:43.:32:46.

men's high jump has had a remarkable season, breaking the

:32:46.:32:51.

British record, sorry, breaking his own personal record four times. He

:32:51.:32:57.

has a great opportunity to get a medal. There has not been an ideal

:32:57.:33:01.

situation for Phillips Idowu to be in, this row with Charles van

:33:01.:33:10.

Commenee, what you make about that? It is one of those things were two

:33:10.:33:15.

people just collided. Their personalities just clash. Phillips

:33:15.:33:19.

likes to do things his own way. In this instance, we know he has got a

:33:19.:33:27.

slight injury... He's been kind of under the radar a little bit. For

:33:27.:33:31.

me, personally, when an athlete chooses how to prepare for an event

:33:31.:33:35.

like this, I think it has to be his decision on how he'd like to

:33:35.:33:38.

prepare in his run-up to the Olympics. Charles is very

:33:38.:33:41.

headstrong. He sets a very high standard and he expects the

:33:42.:33:46.

athletes to fall in line. And no- nonsense Dutchman. Of Bury. But

:33:46.:33:51.

it's one of those things. We just have to be careful that it doesn't

:33:51.:33:55.

overshadow everything else that's happening. We've got some great

:33:55.:33:58.

athletics to look forward to, and let's hope Phillips is fit and

:33:58.:34:02.

healthy and ready to go. Let's have a look inside the stadium, because

:34:02.:34:09.

the stage is set. This is what it looks like inside. Lots of British

:34:09.:34:15.

interest throughout these athletics events. How important will an early

:34:15.:34:23.

medal before the whole team's morale? It will give them a huge

:34:23.:34:27.

lift. Jess Ennis is a huge figure in that team. It's important she

:34:27.:34:31.

does do well because it will galvanise everyone else to believe

:34:31.:34:35.

that they have their moment and it's a possibility that they could

:34:35.:34:40.

equal her achievements. It's great that one of our senior members is

:34:40.:34:45.

up there. It is a fantastic setting for them. We will have to let you

:34:45.:34:49.

get over there because you need to get there before everything gets

:34:49.:34:53.

under way. High hopes in the Olympic Stadium, and the same goes

:34:53.:34:56.

for Eton Dorney today. That's because the Robling finals include

:34:57.:35:00.

the women's double sculls with Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins.

:35:00.:35:05.

The race is just after midday, and there won't be a dry eye in the

:35:05.:35:07.

house if they won gold in the women's double sculls. And that's

:35:08.:35:12.

just the BBC Presentation Team I'm talking about! After silver medals

:35:12.:35:16.

in Sydney, Athens and Beijing, surely it is time for a London gold

:35:16.:35:24.

for Katherine Grainger. When I started rowing at university, I was

:35:24.:35:29.

really not very good at it at all. I loved it, great fun, but it was

:35:29.:35:39.

never, while, she is destined for I didn't start rowing thinking I

:35:39.:35:42.

would be an Olympic athlete. I just started because it was a great

:35:42.:35:49.

thing to do, very sociable, great bunch of people and I loved it.

:35:49.:35:52.

There were all these constant gold settings and moving on and moving

:35:52.:36:00.

on. I've probably learnt that everyone is capable of so much more

:36:00.:36:06.

than they know. How much people can set the high, ambitious goals, and

:36:06.:36:09.

just going on that journey to achieve them, they will learn so

:36:09.:36:13.

much about themselves and do things that they never thought was

:36:13.:36:18.

possible. We've been in a good place city - that pretty much since

:36:18.:36:22.

we got the boat together. It's very exciting to be in. We've been

:36:23.:36:26.

hugely successful, never been beaten. We are the lead crew to go

:36:26.:36:31.

out and beat. Especially on your home soil, everyone is going to

:36:31.:36:36.

want that. They have always been role-models and people to look up

:36:36.:36:41.

to. I don't think anyone sets out to be that successful person, but

:36:41.:36:46.

in pursuit of excellence in other ways you realise you are then at

:36:46.:36:49.

that standard that to become someone who can show people how it

:36:49.:36:54.

can be done. It is just a great journey to be on. It has been an

:36:54.:36:59.

incredible journey. And hopefully it is one that will have a happy

:36:59.:37:04.

ending. A big moment for Katherine Grainger, and a big day for all the

:37:04.:37:07.

finalists that will be racing in the next couple of hours. Let's see

:37:07.:37:10.

how Eton Dorney is looking this morning.

:37:11.:37:14.

It's looking much as it has done for the past few days, the sun

:37:14.:37:18.

glinting down, shining off the water, the crowds absolutely packed

:37:19.:37:23.

out, its impact since 9am. The first few races of minimal

:37:24.:37:27.

consequence to everyone who's come here to watch. They hope for

:37:27.:37:31.

British gold and may be even more than that. Steve, there is a danger

:37:31.:37:36.

of all of us laugh -- lapsing into hyperbole over the last few hours,

:37:36.:37:40.

but it is an immense favour Catherine get -- Katherine Grainger.

:37:40.:37:46.

Not least that Jessica Ennis has been the poster girl for British

:37:46.:37:49.

athletics, Katherine Grainger has been a poster girl for rowing for a

:37:49.:37:54.

decade. Everybody wants her to win today. It's not just within the

:37:54.:37:59.

sport, it's outside the sport. I was with Denise Lewis back in the

:37:59.:38:04.

studio. She was talking about it. She knows Katherine Grainger very

:38:04.:38:09.

well. What ever sport, this could be the moment for the British team.

:38:09.:38:14.

A fantastic story of all these silver medals. Six times world

:38:14.:38:20.

champion. It is this coming to be the date? And Anna Watkins as well.

:38:20.:38:24.

The performance between the two girls, they take it in terms of

:38:24.:38:27.

trials of who actually wins. There's not that much difference

:38:27.:38:31.

between the two of them when they have to race each other in single

:38:31.:38:34.

sculls. They are outstanding athletes. We will have more chance

:38:34.:38:41.

to talk about Catherine as we get closer to the race. Jeff Ennis is

:38:41.:38:43.

and the monumental pressure, but she was saying it is how you

:38:43.:38:47.

respond to that pressure that determines how successful you are.

:38:47.:38:52.

You can take energy from it and perform as a consequence. Catherine

:38:52.:38:55.

says the same thing. She's taking the positives out of the fact that

:38:55.:39:00.

everybody is looking at that, as opposed to regarding it as an

:39:00.:39:04.

albatross around her neck. Very much so. It's how you cope with

:39:04.:39:07.

that pressure that makes the difference. That is what makes the

:39:07.:39:13.

Olympics so special, is that they have won the last to mark Road

:39:13.:39:15.

World Championships, they have won every time they've gone in double

:39:15.:39:19.

sculls together, but it counts for nothing if they don't win here.

:39:19.:39:22.

There is that expectation of pressure. One little bit of

:39:22.:39:27.

pressure that has been taken of his they are not now the first women's

:39:27.:39:30.

crew to win eight Olympic gold medal. But that is what makes great

:39:30.:39:34.

champions, how you cope with the situation. I used to love it in

:39:34.:39:38.

some ways. Sitting here thinking about it, I'm thinking, how did I

:39:38.:39:41.

used to do that? But it's how you cope with it. You've got to get a

:39:42.:39:47.

good performance out. There is a helluva lot of pressure on. The

:39:47.:39:51.

next couple of hours will be sheer hell for them, but they will

:39:51.:39:55.

remember this day for the rest of their lives. There is an extra buzz

:39:55.:39:59.

around Eton Dorney today, not just because of Kath Grainger and Anna

:39:59.:40:03.

Watkins, because we have four finals. We have the men's quad, who

:40:03.:40:06.

have an outside chance of a metal, the men's pair, who have a

:40:06.:40:13.

reasonable chance of a medal, and then the single sculls at -- this

:40:13.:40:18.

afternoon. Alan's regime is no different to everybody else. It is:,

:40:18.:40:24.

relentless, a commitment to have to make 24/7. Even when it is

:40:24.:40:34.
:40:34.:40:37.

It is mentally very hard and very tough. I have given up a

:40:37.:40:44.

comfortable Christmas. I've dreamed that final race a 1000 times. I've

:40:44.:40:49.

won it every single one, thankfully. Hopefully the sacrifice as well add

:40:49.:40:55.

up to a gold. You do dream about standing up on that podium. It's at

:40:55.:41:05.
:41:05.:41:08.

that point you think, I will be I'm quite a bit rocky fan. My

:41:08.:41:12.

favourite film would be Rocky four. That is why this would camp was

:41:12.:41:17.

born. The real purpose behind it was not only to toughen up Alan

:41:17.:41:21.

physically, but it was to give him that strength in the head, the

:41:21.:41:25.

mental willpower and determination you need in this sport which is so

:41:25.:41:30.

hard, especially for in the final in that last 500m for a guy who

:41:31.:41:34.

really wants it, the guy who can draw on something, be it from Court

:41:34.:41:42.

or from his girlfriend or from some thought, in Alan's case that the be

:41:42.:41:45.

all of those things. He can think, I did that would camp at Christmas,

:41:45.:41:51.

I'm tougher than they are. He can go that extra fruit -- few strokes

:41:51.:41:55.

and that beat them all. This is a rare occurrence, I'm in the kitchen.

:41:55.:42:00.

I'm usually treated like a prince when I'm at home, but I just want

:42:00.:42:04.

to get them out early so they aren't too hard. I've already had

:42:04.:42:11.

porridge this morning. My mum was up at 6am making it. I just cannot

:42:11.:42:15.

keep this lad fed. The supermarket bill has gone through the roof. The

:42:15.:42:18.

whole business of his Christmas training, out on Christmas Day.

:42:18.:42:24.

This year was a pleasure. That was in 12 degrees. Last year it was

:42:24.:42:28.

miners 14, but he is going for this. He is not leaving any Stone

:42:28.:42:38.
:42:38.:42:43.

He has had glandular fever, he's had operations, he's ridden a bike

:42:43.:42:48.

to tried to beat Chris Hoy but fell off, he had concussion. We dream --

:42:48.:42:52.

we've been through a lot of trials and tribulations. There is no one

:42:52.:42:57.

more determined and committed than Allen. It was the old man Steve

:42:58.:43:02.

Redgrave holding up the young boy at the championships. I feel like

:43:02.:43:07.

someone has cut my legs off, it really hurts. That's what you call

:43:07.:43:12.

giving your all, isn't it? The gold, what does it mean, what is it

:43:12.:43:19.

worth? For me, part of it will be an apology for all the times I've

:43:19.:43:25.

annoyed bail and cursed at him and been a prima donna and all that.

:43:25.:43:30.

For Jules, any time I've made her feel second-best. For my parents,

:43:30.:43:35.

for the adviser may have squandered. And to friends and family, for the

:43:35.:43:39.

times I've missed. To sponsors as well, for the times I've said, I

:43:39.:43:42.

can't come in and do that event or come in and see you because I've

:43:42.:43:47.

got to do my training. Hopefully, they will accept that gold as an

:43:47.:43:50.

apology and hopefully... And because they will have played a

:43:50.:43:55.

part in winning that gold for me. Regardless of what happens, I want

:43:55.:43:59.

to be able to stand up, be proud and know that I did everything I

:43:59.:44:04.

can do and couldn't have taken another stroke. On a glorious,

:44:04.:44:07.

sunny Friday morning at Eton Dorney, Alan Campbell will be remembering

:44:07.:44:12.

Christmas Day back in Coleraine. Do you know how he does that? On his

:44:12.:44:16.

iPod, which he has with his head bones, he has Christmas songs, even

:44:16.:44:21.

in July and August he is listening to stop the cavalry and things like

:44:21.:44:24.

that. That gets him back into thinking what it was like in

:44:24.:44:28.

Northern Ireland in December. a real character. Globally the hard

:44:28.:44:32.

work will come to fruition today. Realistically his prospects are

:44:32.:44:36.

bat? To win, I wouldn't have thought so. To win a bronze medal,

:44:36.:44:41.

yes, I would be so. Chris Hoy, equalling the number of gold medals

:44:41.:44:46.

yesterday. He is a phenomenon. just equalling, he's got a silver,

:44:46.:44:50.

I've only got a bronze. He is at the top of that list now. He's a

:44:50.:44:55.

great guy, a great competitor. I watched it last night, it was

:44:55.:45:01.

fantastic. Seeing his demotion of what it meant to him - Maxine his

:45:01.:45:06.

demotion of what it meant to him, it was very special. Now to a man

:45:06.:45:13.

who has been the embodiment of the Olympic Games so far. This man has

:45:13.:45:18.

become a cult figure at Eton Dorney. Here he is finishing his last race,

:45:18.:45:21.

finishing in last position, as he has done throughout the week. He

:45:21.:45:26.

has been a real character. Everybody has been enamoured with

:45:26.:45:31.

his engaging personality. I don't know if he gets a ticker-tape

:45:31.:45:34.

reception when he goes back home, but he deserves it because he has

:45:35.:45:43.

been an integral part of the past Steve will be back with you later.

:45:43.:45:47.

It is one of those Olympic days to say that. Top-class action on the

:45:47.:45:51.

lakes, the track and in the pool. Last night in the Aquatics Centre,

:45:51.:45:54.

anyone who thought that Michael Phelps was ready to watch

:45:54.:46:04.
:46:04.:46:08.

gracefully the changing of the individual medley. A good starting

:46:08.:46:16.

three from Phelps. Lochte second. Lochte looking to make the move on

:46:16.:46:20.

this but he's not. Phelps is very good and determined here. Look at

:46:20.:46:26.

that. If Lochte is going to get this, he's got to go now would make

:46:26.:46:32.

a really big move. But look at felt skull. This is an awesome final.

:46:32.:46:38.

Lochte is coming back but I think it's going to be Phelps. It is

:46:38.:46:43.

Lochte's world record and is still Lochte's world record, but the

:46:43.:46:47.

winner goes to Phelps. Three in a row. The great Michael Phelps has

:46:47.:46:53.

just won his 20th Olympic medal. Finally, he's won an individual

:46:53.:46:57.

gold medal. For I wanted to try and be forced the front half as much as

:46:57.:47:05.

I could. I'm pretty pleased. It's a gold medal. Someone special run you

:47:05.:47:09.

yesterday, didn't they? Yes, the President called me yesterday. It

:47:09.:47:15.

was pretty cool. Somebody called and asked for me. They said, hold

:47:15.:47:20.

pleas for the President of the United States. I was, like, OK!

:47:20.:47:26.

Michael Phelps, the first ever Olympian to reach 20 medals, an

:47:26.:47:34.

At the Aquatics Centre tonight, we will have everything crossed for a

:47:34.:47:38.

first British gold. I imagine Phelps isn't taking many calls at

:47:38.:47:43.

the moment, but I'm glad you made that exception for the President. I

:47:43.:47:46.

misunderstood the way he said it. Somebody called from the White

:47:46.:47:49.

House and said, Mr Phelps, we have the President for you, Will you

:47:50.:47:55.

hold? Straightaway Obama comes through and says, well done. He was

:47:55.:47:59.

immense. Better than I've ever seen him last night in terms of the

:47:59.:48:03.

amount he gave in that race. Yes, it was one of those situations

:48:03.:48:06.

where Ryan Lochte helped him out. Ryan Lochte Hadaway's 30 minutes

:48:06.:48:11.

before. I think locked would have been a handful, but it played into

:48:11.:48:19.

Michael Phelps' hands. Out of all these events, to do the treble, --

:48:19.:48:24.

to do the treble. He hadn't done it. This meant so much to him. He's

:48:24.:48:27.

given so much time to people simply because he realises this is it,

:48:27.:48:31.

he's not going to raise any any more. We've seen a lovely sight to

:48:31.:48:35.

Michael Phelps, everybody appreciating demand understanding

:48:35.:48:38.

him more. Because he's more Honourable this year and these

:48:38.:48:42.

younger swimmers are coming up, you can't bat quite believe that we've

:48:42.:48:46.

seen it. Tonight, we are focusing on the greatest female British

:48:46.:48:49.

swimmer there's ever been, the greatest British swimmer, Becky

:48:50.:48:53.

Adlington. Two gold medals from Beijing, a bronze from London

:48:53.:49:00.

already. Tonight is the 800m. She's qualified fastest, but only just.

:49:00.:49:05.

We all know and the swimming world, it is her and Lotte Friis together.

:49:05.:49:09.

The two of them are side by side. This is set up for a classic race.

:49:10.:49:15.

I think Becky likes to dominate the race and take it out, Friis will be

:49:15.:49:19.

sat with her. I don't know how it's going to work. One thing but he

:49:19.:49:22.

does do, she's really soft and lovely outside the pool, but you

:49:22.:49:31.

Watching the piece and Katherine Grainger made me think of Becky,

:49:31.:49:36.

you are right, for all the talk of buying shoes honour killing Nas,

:49:36.:49:40.

she has a core of steel. She handles pressure, expectation, what

:49:40.:49:49.

every wants to call it. You hear all these stories, you see the

:49:49.:49:58.

athletes, to take them there, the sacrifices from the family.

:49:58.:50:03.

Athletes need to be selfish to get the best out of themselves, but I

:50:03.:50:07.

know her coach very well, and no- one pushes themselves as hard as

:50:07.:50:12.

she does, morning, Knight, everything is good enough for these

:50:12.:50:19.

moments. -- night. She is such a lovely person but she is a fighter.

:50:19.:50:23.

The other thing that swimming has in common with rowing and cycling,

:50:23.:50:29.

we are not talking about big money. They do not get any gold financial

:50:29.:50:33.

bonus, America does, but none of them are rich, and she lives a very

:50:34.:50:37.

simple life. She is the girl next door from Mansfield, it is not

:50:37.:50:42.

about money. It is not like getting into football because they see the

:50:42.:50:47.

flash cars, people do not get into swimming for that reason. They get

:50:47.:50:52.

into swimming because somebody goes, you know what, you are quite good,

:50:52.:50:55.

and then is determined athlete inside you, the competitor takes

:50:55.:50:59.

over. You go along to a swimming club, and the ones who make it,

:50:59.:51:05.

there is an element of... Mbeki is 6 ft tall, that helps, but you

:51:05.:51:13.

cannot put a natural competitor in someone. -- Becky. Someone needs to

:51:13.:51:17.

have the fight, the fire, the determination to wanted so much

:51:17.:51:21.

more than anybody else, that she has sacrificed so much for this

:51:21.:51:25.

moment. They're so much expectation on air, she will deliver, it is

:51:26.:51:33.

just what Lotte Friis does tonight. -- there is so much expectation on

:51:33.:51:37.

her. I promise you Rebecca Adlington is not doing it just for

:51:37.:51:41.

herself, she desperately wants to do this in the London Games, but

:51:41.:51:46.

gold or silver is a great result. 7:45pm, of course we are cheering

:51:46.:51:50.

her on, but we will accept whatever she can give us, because he will

:51:50.:51:56.

have put everything into it. 50m freestyle heats, tons of them,

:51:56.:52:01.

about 10! People from all sorts of countries, we will be showing you

:52:01.:52:08.

those on BBC Three. We have also got the heats for the 1,500m which

:52:08.:52:14.

is 30 lengths of the pool. And we have got relay heats, or on BBC,

:52:14.:52:20.

Fran Halsall and Amy Smith going in the 50m freestyle for Britain.

:52:20.:52:30.
:52:30.:52:54.

David Davies at Daniel fog in a 7:45pm tonight for Rebecca

:52:54.:52:57.

Adlington's final, we will all be watching, and do not underestimate

:52:57.:53:01.

how hard it is for a champion Olympic swimmer to defend their

:53:01.:53:07.

title, very difficult indeed. In the sailing, we are approaching the

:53:07.:53:11.

end, Ben Ainslie is hoping for gold. He had an indifferent start down in

:53:11.:53:21.
:53:21.:53:24.

Weymouth, but yesterday he had a The Dane has sailed quite possibly

:53:24.:53:28.

the best race of all. An incredible comeback, very frustrating for

:53:28.:53:35.

Ainslie. Ainslie beaten by Hogh- Christensen in every race. Race

:53:35.:53:40.

seven, and finally Ben Ainslie had a chance, forcing the Great Dane to

:53:40.:53:49.

attack. Britain versus Denmark, Ainslie has to beat the Danish

:53:49.:53:53.

sailor for the first time at these Olympic Games. O Christensen was

:53:53.:54:03.
:54:03.:54:03.

Danish sailor, home Christensen has capsized and is on his side. -- O

:54:03.:54:12.

Chris Stimpson. Ben Ainslie seized the opportunity. There it is, Ben

:54:12.:54:16.

Ainslie has beat in the Danish, come on, you can see him, he

:54:16.:54:21.

believes it! But the Dane is a fierce competitor. In the second

:54:21.:54:26.

race of the day, Ainslie was forced to chase them once again.

:54:26.:54:30.

Ainslie has rounded the mark, chasing the Danish sailor. There is

:54:30.:54:35.

an exchange between them. Ben Ainslie is doing a penalty turn.

:54:35.:54:41.

All I can imagine is that he is telling Ainslie, you hit the mark.

:54:41.:54:48.

To us explain a little bit about the altercation of the conversation

:54:48.:54:53.

from the Dutch sailor. Was he saying you had hit the mark? Yes,

:54:53.:55:00.

both him and the Danish guy, basically they teamed up on me. I

:55:00.:55:05.

am seriously unhappy with that. But you know, they made a mistake, I am

:55:05.:55:09.

angry, they don't want to make me angry. From where I was sailing, it

:55:09.:55:14.

looked very much like Ben hit the mark. If he was sure he didn't, he

:55:14.:55:17.

should not have done the penalty turn. I had no choice, because if

:55:17.:55:23.

it goes with protest, two against one, you are going to lose. Despite

:55:23.:55:27.

the paddle people something he believed he had not done, Ainslie

:55:27.:55:31.

took two wins over his rival in just one day. With three races left,

:55:31.:55:38.

there is nothing it. Beware, Great Dane, Ainslie's in animal is

:55:38.:55:44.

awakened. It is that, you know, really bad. I am not happy with

:55:44.:55:49.

that. It has happened to me a lot in the Olympics before. Now I am

:55:49.:55:57.

older and wiser now not to fall for Ben Ainslie is back on the water

:55:57.:56:02.

today, the sailing starts again at midday. Beyond the 16 days of sport,

:56:02.:56:06.

the hope is of a sporting legacy from these games, and one medal

:56:06.:56:09.

winner after another has been talking about who they watched in

:56:09.:56:13.

the past and who inspired them, so if you think that athletics might

:56:13.:56:23.
:56:23.:56:26.

be for you, this is the story of Growing up in Jarrow, South

:56:26.:56:30.

Tyneside, was not... I don't know, it did not seem to be the best

:56:30.:56:36.

place in the world at the time. A lot of unemployment, shipyards

:56:36.:56:41.

closing. Having said that, I think as a kid, you cannot ride through a

:56:41.:56:44.

lot of that and you concentrate on your own little environment, which

:56:44.:56:51.

was great. I run my first race, 400m, for the school. I remember

:56:51.:56:55.

the guy came up to me afterwards, he said, you are not Tabar little

:56:55.:57:00.

runner. He said, you should come down the Athletic Club. That was

:57:00.:57:06.

the first time I met Jimmy Hedley, I came down the club a week later.

:57:06.:57:11.

A lot of kids come to the athletics club, they try it out and then go...

:57:11.:57:19.

For mane, it was the friends I made, the atmosphere. -- me. We used to

:57:19.:57:24.

play football, table tennis, go for a run, it was great fun, like a

:57:24.:57:28.

youth club. I do not know what I thought it was, but it seemed like

:57:28.:57:33.

a fun place to go two nights a week. And then there were girls as well,

:57:33.:57:38.

which always help. I did a lot of my training right up until I was

:57:38.:57:41.

almost a world champion on this here, and he would not get athletes

:57:41.:57:46.

doing that this day's. They would think it was not good enough. --

:57:46.:57:51.

these days. I ran my first race and came second, and I was kind of book.

:57:51.:57:55.

Jimmy was really good at getting me to realise that this was something

:57:56.:58:03.

I could be quite good at. A lot of times I remember racing here, it

:58:03.:58:08.

was not a proper race. I had been pre-selected for the Olympics in

:58:08.:58:13.

1984, I was injured running up to it, and I needed one race to decide

:58:13.:58:17.

whether I would go to Los Angeles. I had not realised this, because I

:58:17.:58:21.

just turned up and Jimmy had sorted out, but he rang you to come down

:58:21.:58:25.

and help out. Jimmy was on the phone, I can remember about 9

:58:25.:58:30.

o'clock on Thursday night, can you get some Lansdowne, Steve is doing

:58:30.:58:35.

a time-trial. I said, right, a bit short notice, see what I will do. I

:58:35.:58:40.

made a few phone calls, and every one of the lads said they would

:58:40.:58:45.

take time off work or college and come down at 12 o'clock on Saturday

:58:45.:58:48.

afternoon to come down to try to help Steve, because you were well

:58:48.:58:54.

respected. I am glad I did, because obviously I had a silver medal, and

:58:54.:58:59.

I would not have done otherwise. People do not realise that top-

:59:00.:59:03.

level and Indians, what you are doing behind closed doors, as it

:59:03.:59:11.

were. -- Olympians. People say it must be a great feeling, and it is

:59:11.:59:17.

a great feeling, but it is also great when you are 16 and you break

:59:17.:59:22.

four minutes for the 1,500m for the first time. Stephen Grahm of Jarrow

:59:22.:59:27.

has had the race of his life, and he has not only beaten four minutes,

:59:27.:59:37.
:59:37.:59:43.

If he would like to get involved in Olympic sports, go to the website.

:59:43.:59:48.

The fantastic story of Steve Cram, the pinnacle of that career is

:59:48.:59:52.

being in the BBC commentary box! How strong do you think the

:59:52.:59:55.

potential is here to inspire a generation? If they cannot be

:59:56.:00:00.

inspired here, I do not know where they can be. This is a fantastic

:00:00.:00:04.

venue, and the noise has been phenomenal already. I know that has

:00:04.:00:08.

been said at a lot of the venues, but we are hoping that our athletes

:00:08.:00:11.

are going to rise to the occasion here and do very well. I think we

:00:11.:00:17.

will do, I think we were when -- I think we will win lots of medals.

:00:17.:00:21.

Who knows what the youngsters at home will think, who they will be

:00:21.:00:26.

inspired by. And he's said it was a good way to meet girls! There is

:00:27.:00:29.

that as well. We like to think of athletics as a sport that has

:00:29.:00:35.

something for everybody, fast, slow, endurance, throwing, jumping, boys

:00:35.:00:39.

and girls as well. Do you think there is something especially

:00:39.:00:43.

motivating about seeing a British athlete he does fantastically well?

:00:43.:00:49.

Does that have added power? I think it does. I'm not sure that I

:00:49.:00:52.

mentioned how much have an influence Brendan Foster was. He

:00:52.:00:56.

lived half a mile down the road, and when I was 12 or 13, watching

:00:56.:00:59.

him at the Munich and Index on television, running around the

:00:59.:01:04.

world, you think, hang on, he talks the same as I do, he is doing these

:01:04.:01:09.

great things. I think role-models are incredibly important. How much

:01:10.:01:14.

has athletics changed since your time? The basics are the same. You

:01:14.:01:17.

have still got to train hard and have a lot of belief, certainly at

:01:17.:01:21.

this level. There is a lot more help and support around the

:01:21.:01:25.

athletes. I have just been with our team in Portugal earlier in the

:01:25.:01:29.

week, and the support systems for them are immense. They are probably

:01:29.:01:33.

as good as anyone else in the world at getting the athletes ready for

:01:33.:01:37.

the big day. But once they get out, it is still the same, you have got

:01:37.:01:40.

to believe in your own ability, believe in the hard work that you

:01:40.:01:44.

have done, go out and executes in a way... They know they have the

:01:45.:01:48.

potential to do well, they have just got to deliver and hopefully

:01:48.:01:53.

deliver better than ever before. good to have them out of the

:01:53.:01:57.

Olympic excitement in Portugal, they have just come back to London.

:01:57.:02:00.

They are coming in three days before the competition, so there

:02:00.:02:04.

are still athletes in Portugal who will be watching us and getting

:02:04.:02:08.

nervous today. The idea was to allow them to prepare in an intense

:02:08.:02:12.

environment, which it always is, but in a quiet way, if you like,

:02:12.:02:16.

not living in the village, and with the other sports starting before

:02:16.:02:20.

they did, not getting too excited, if you like. They are as good as I

:02:20.:02:24.

have seen the British athletics team in terms of preparation, very

:02:24.:02:28.

relaxed, I am sure they are raring to go, and we are looking forward

:02:28.:02:31.

to seeing them getting going this morning. It is going to be a very

:02:31.:02:34.

busy morning, we will hear lots from you, Steve, thank you very

:02:35.:02:38.

much. Let's take our first trip inside the stadium and see how

:02:38.:02:42.

everything is gearing up. Within half an hour, everything will get

:02:42.:02:47.

under way, so we can join John Arthur Edwards, Michael Johnson and

:02:47.:02:50.

Colin Jackson. Let me tell you, the excitement is

:02:50.:02:56.

palpable. We have had the countdown, it is really rocking, we have got a

:02:56.:03:00.

massive morning, Jessica Ennis, Christine Ohuruogu and Dai Greene.

:03:00.:03:10.
:03:10.:03:13.

So many people have texted me, can't way for athletics to start,

:03:13.:03:17.

today is the real start of the Olympic, all of that sort of thing,

:03:17.:03:21.

it is incredible. I think we will be in for some great athletic, this

:03:21.:03:26.

is one of the most exciting Olympic athletic sessions I have ever seen,

:03:26.:03:31.

I mean there is so many great stories coming in, a lot of talk

:03:31.:03:37.

about the men's 100 metres, the women's 100m is going to be an

:03:37.:03:40.

incredible competition. The heptathlon. One of the great things

:03:40.:03:45.

about this, this Olympics, as far as athletics is concerned, there is

:03:45.:03:49.

less this talk about records, more talk about who is going to win the

:03:49.:03:52.

medals. That is what is exciting, the competition between the athlete,

:03:52.:03:58.

when you have got, five or six who can all contend for the medals. It

:03:58.:04:03.

creates great races and a lot of buzz, which we are feeling already.

:04:03.:04:06.

We are. Colin, Charles van Commenee said this is the strongest British

:04:06.:04:11.

team for 30 years, would you agree with that? I would. We have so many

:04:11.:04:15.

medal shots and genuine shots which makes it very great find. Remember,

:04:15.:04:19.

four years ago, the team were very young, they were getting uses to

:04:19.:04:23.

competition. Now they have gone through their process, they have

:04:24.:04:28.

won medals at European level and world level. Now it is time for the

:04:28.:04:33.

Olympic games to deliver something special. Amazing atmosphere. Jess

:04:33.:04:36.

Ennis will be out in a few minutes type. You know what it is like to

:04:36.:04:41.

come out in front of a home crowd. How do you think she will respond?

:04:41.:04:46.

Incredibly well, because she has that type of personality, that is,

:04:46.:04:49.

much more conducive to being very focused. She is not a very emotion

:04:49.:04:55.

a, you know, type of person, she is very even in terms of demeanour, I

:04:55.:05:00.

think she will get into a serious focus mind set when she comes out

:05:00.:05:03.

here. She won't be affected by the crowd. We always here about people

:05:03.:05:07.

talking about the home crowd, and the home team, home crowd advantage,

:05:07.:05:12.

there are disadvantages because you walk into the stadium, you are

:05:13.:05:16.

reminded of the grandeur of the situation and how most of the

:05:16.:05:21.

people in this stadium will be behind Jess, that is an incredible

:05:21.:05:26.

amount of pressure to put on one self. She will be able to block all

:05:26.:05:29.

of that and focus on the event. She has four events today. She knows

:05:29.:05:33.

she will have to get off to a flying start. Because of that, she

:05:33.:05:37.

knows that today is the day, it is the first day but today is her best

:05:37.:05:41.

day and her best opportunity to win this competition. She has to get a

:05:41.:05:45.

lead going today because she has strong events. She has, hurdles.

:05:45.:05:50.

Crucial, isn't it. She has to run 13. She does. She will have to get

:05:50.:05:56.

close to her best, in all these first four events, as Michael said,

:05:56.:06:02.

she has to high jump very well, she has to throw the shot put very well

:06:02.:06:06.

and the hurdle, the biggest jeopardy, you are rusty, you

:06:06.:06:10.

haven't done any competition yet, to me this is the most intense

:06:10.:06:15.

competition she will be under. She has a heat where she isn't even the

:06:15.:06:18.

fastest, even though she has a world class personal best. This is

:06:19.:06:24.

what makes it exciting. Let us hope she keep hers head and delivering

:06:24.:06:28.

what we hope for her. The long jump and the javelin are the two where

:06:28.:06:32.

she is shaky. She will have a lot more confidence going into those

:06:32.:06:38.

two event, based on the fact that she has done so well in her other

:06:38.:06:44.

event, she has set personal bests, that takes pressure off. She will

:06:44.:06:48.

never become great at those events and she knows it. It takes a bit of

:06:48.:06:53.

the pressure off knowing she can run a good hurdle race, a great 200

:06:53.:06:56.

metres tonight that. Will take some of the pressure off. When she is

:06:56.:07:00.

under less pressure, she will compete better tomorrow in the long

:07:00.:07:07.

jump, afterLynn. We are yesterdayy to go for the first track event, in

:07:07.:07:17.
:07:17.:07:40.

the crowd go crazy. There is the line up for the first event. Three

:07:40.:07:44.

athletes wearing the British colours, Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:07:44.:07:54.
:07:54.:07:54.

goes in heat number four. And Louise Hazel goes in heat three.

:07:54.:08:02.

Austra Skujyte, Lithuania Olympic silver medallist, back in 2004. And

:08:02.:08:10.

Marcussen, the Norwegian record holder. Wonderful to see the

:08:10.:08:20.
:08:20.:08:34.

stadium so, so busy and so alive. sprint races where a false start

:08:34.:08:39.

would mean instant disqualification for one athletes. It is back to the

:08:39.:08:43.

old rule of track and field, which means if an athlete is responsible

:08:43.:08:49.

for a second false start, that looked as though it was Marcussen

:08:49.:08:52.

of Norway, there would be a disqualification, but not unusual,

:08:52.:08:59.

in multi-events, Steve, is it, to see a few nervous people. Some non-

:08:59.:09:02.

specialist sprinters getting a false start. I am sure there are a

:09:02.:09:07.

few nerves as well, Paul, even for the experienced athletes, first

:09:07.:09:15.

morning of the Olympic Games, first event. Huge crowd. Maybe excused,

:09:15.:09:19.

lane three, don't forget there are nine lanes here, often lane one

:09:19.:09:29.
:09:29.:09:29.

will be empty. Well that was Marcussen being warned. The line up

:09:29.:09:38.

once more mar kas, Marcussen, Austra Skujyte, Machtig, Yana

:09:38.:09:42.

Maksimava, Dadic and Karolina Tyminska. The athlete nearest the

:09:42.:09:45.

camera, Karolina Tyminska, should figure in the overall standings at

:09:45.:09:49.

the top of the table, in this heptathlon. She finished seventh in

:09:49.:09:54.

the Olympic games if 2008. She is a brilliant 800 metre runners, that

:09:54.:10:00.

is the last event. They get away and Marcussen gets away well, so

:10:00.:10:04.

does Karolina Tyminska nearest the camera the Polish champion is

:10:04.:10:10.

flying. And all of her time will be converted into points, this is a

:10:10.:10:13.

brilliant performance by Karolina Tyminska. And Yana Maksimava and

:10:14.:10:19.

Austra Skujyte crossing the line virtually together. 13 .22. Just a

:10:19.:10:22.

tenth of a second outside of her lifetime best performance for

:10:22.:10:26.

Karolina Tyminska. So the Polish champion who is well-known to all

:10:26.:10:32.

of the British athletes gets away to a good start. Very good start

:10:32.:10:38.

indeed, considering the false start, she was well out of the block,, you

:10:38.:10:41.

were saying these 100 hurdles are seeded. Karolina Tyminska maybe

:10:41.:10:47.

could have been in a couple of races higher. A personal best going

:10:47.:10:52.

back, not far off that, and Austra Skujyte struggling a bit. A

:10:52.:10:56.

disappointing start for her, hitting that last hurdle. So we are

:10:56.:10:59.

hitting that last hurdle. So we are off and running here. Jess Ennis

:10:59.:11:03.

coming up in heat fivement one person who knows about winning

:11:03.:11:07.

Olympic Gold is Denise Lewis, she has been analysing what it will

:11:07.:11:17.
:11:17.:11:22.

take for Jess Ennis to take the -- Jess Ennis has never had a chance

:11:22.:11:27.

to prove herself on the biggest stage. A fractured foot meant she

:11:27.:11:31.

couldn't compete in Beijing and in intervening yearss she has had to

:11:31.:11:36.

work hard to attain world indoor and outdoor success. So, can she

:11:36.:11:41.

pull it off? Here is our guide to our strengths and weaknesses. In

:11:41.:11:47.

May, Jess beat my British heptathlon record in Austria. And,

:11:47.:11:50.

made some significant improvements to some events that will make the

:11:50.:11:57.

difference here in London. In the 200m she set a new personal best of

:11:57.:12:02.

22.88, compare that with her season east best times over the past three

:12:02.:12:06.

year and you can see she has knocked nearly half a second off

:12:06.:12:12.

since 2009. That time is looking good when compared with the PBs of

:12:12.:12:15.

her two main competitors, Tatyana Chernova, who is nearly three-

:12:16.:12:19.

quarters of a second slower and Natalia Dobrynska, who is almost a

:12:19.:12:26.

second and a-and-a-half behind her pace P The 200m looks a safe bet

:12:26.:12:33.

but the javelin is where she will have to be at her best. She is 5' 5

:12:33.:12:38.

in height compared with Tatyana Chernova and Natalia Dobrynska who

:12:38.:12:47.

are taller. In Austria Jess through a Berneal best of 47.11. A good

:12:47.:12:52.

through considering she only posted 39.95 in Daegu which cost her the

:12:52.:12:55.

gold medal. It is unlikely she will beat Natalia Dobrynska and Tatyana

:12:55.:12:59.

Chernova here. Their personal bests dwarf hers, especially Tatyana

:12:59.:13:04.

Chernova, who excels in this event. Her best throw is over seven metres

:13:04.:13:08.

further. So Jess needs to stay as close as possible to her

:13:09.:13:14.

competitors, in the javelin, and the long jump. Again, in Austria

:13:14.:13:20.

she posted her best ever jump of 6.51 but that was still way off the

:13:20.:13:26.

other two. Tatyana Chernova leads the way with 6.82, although she

:13:26.:13:32.

only managed 6.05 at the Russian championships. It is important to

:13:32.:13:36.

remember that Jess does excel in the high jump, hurdles and the 200

:13:36.:13:40.

meters and if she match hers personal best in the long jump and

:13:40.:13:50.
:13:50.:14:00.

javelin it maybe enough to secure first 100m hurdles. Karolina

:14:00.:14:10.
:14:10.:14:19.

have a non-starter on the inside, that is Margaret Simpson, former

:14:19.:14:29.
:14:29.:14:38.

bronze medallist at the World defending Olympic champion. Tragedy

:14:38.:14:42.

struck her when her husband and coach died earlier in the year, but,

:14:42.:14:46.

by all accounts starting to get back-in to pretty good form, and

:14:46.:14:56.
:14:56.:14:57.

she should not be written off. Eliska Klucinova. Pretty good

:14:57.:15:03.

javelin thrower. This nail thing is very popular, we are getting the

:15:03.:15:08.

flag nail paints. They are available all over the village.

:15:08.:15:13.

Your national flag very popular. Broersen, there is a Dutch high

:15:13.:15:21.

jump champion. Car poe have a. Not one of her bests, dipped under 14

:15:21.:15:31.
:15:31.:15:38.

seconds this year. The French number two. Natalia Dobrynska, has

:15:38.:15:47.

had a lot to contend with, but she is a redoubtable competitor. Very

:15:47.:15:56.

strong. She doesn't always join the hurdle, she has a best of 13.4 but

:15:56.:16:01.

this year only one 13.9. Conditions really good. Conducive to the

:16:01.:16:05.

athletes running quick, which has to be good news for Jess Ennis,

:16:05.:16:15.
:16:15.:16:33.

this is the event she wants to kick four. They get away safely. Natalia

:16:33.:16:37.

Dobrynska, say it reasonable start, she is leading this one. Broersen

:16:37.:16:41.

going with her from Netherlands. Natalia Dobrynska holds it together

:16:41.:16:45.

here, say it good performance, fading a bit. She gets it from

:16:45.:16:50.

Broersen. 13.58. That is a big improvement, and I said you should

:16:50.:16:55.

never write this lady off. Wasn't that far outside her personal best

:16:55.:17:03.

to be Monday nest, so that is a good start for her. Colin? That was

:17:03.:17:05.

an excellent start by Natalia Dobrynska, I don't think anybody

:17:05.:17:10.

was expecting that. She has gone four tenths of a second faster than

:17:10.:17:14.

se has run all season, all her opponents will be watching her

:17:14.:17:18.

carefully. He is in lane two for us. She gets away to a really good

:17:18.:17:22.

explosive start. Of course, she is the power athlete. Her second day

:17:22.:17:26.

is very strong indeed. But this is an exceptional performance for her.

:17:26.:17:33.

And she obviously wants to hang on to this title. Out the block,

:17:34.:17:37.

drives hard into the first hurdle. Gets up right very well indeed.

:17:37.:17:44.

What she does then, is focus on the barrier, she keeps her head level,

:17:44.:17:49.

flat and straight. She makes room beautifully for the barriers, as

:17:49.:17:54.

far as I am concerned this is a very good strong powerful start for

:17:54.:17:58.

Natalia Dobrynska. Everybody is sur pruesed with this, the wind speed,

:17:59.:18:08.
:18:09.:18:18.

well within the allowable limit. A aggressive out of the blocks. You

:18:18.:18:24.

can see how her head level stays the same. She runs into the line,

:18:24.:18:31.

and I think she will be happy with that.

:18:31.:18:37.

The defending Olympic champion of Poland, traditional linear

:18:37.:18:47.
:18:47.:18:49.

technique. And over that qualifier in line, said at 20 metres 65. A

:18:49.:18:57.

very steady start for him. We have just seen two rotational throws,

:18:57.:19:04.

but this is the technique that won the Olympic title for many years.

:19:04.:19:14.

This man won the Olympic title in Beijing four years ago. A solid

:19:14.:19:23.

start. These guys know each other very well, and that is 21 metres

:19:23.:19:28.

and three centimetres, the longest throw we have seen this morning.

:19:28.:19:36.

very good run from the Dobrynska, that is a good start to the defence

:19:36.:19:46.
:19:46.:20:04.

heptathlete from Birchfield Harriers, going in heat No. 3,

:20:04.:20:14.
:20:14.:20:19.

running in lane five. Jennifer Oeser running next to her, very

:20:19.:20:25.

tall, a pretty good high jumper. Louise Hazel has come from a long

:20:25.:20:30.

line of tremendous multi-eventer as from Birchfield Harriers. Denise

:20:30.:20:40.
:20:40.:21:05.

Lewis, Kelly Sotherton, Judy through these heats, will get

:21:05.:21:14.

tougher. Louise Hazel, a season's best of 13.421. A Commonwealth

:21:14.:21:23.

Games gold medallist in New Delhi. Totally focusing on the turn

:21:23.:21:33.
:21:33.:21:35.

barriers that lay ahead of her. Goodness only knows what the

:21:35.:21:41.

reception of Jessica Ennis will be like. That was staggering on this

:21:41.:21:51.
:21:51.:21:54.

first of track and field athletics. Jennifer Oeser of Germany, the

:21:54.:22:04.
:22:04.:22:12.

season's best of 13.4 this season. Grabuste, European Under 23

:22:12.:22:22.
:22:22.:22:34.

champion. Louise Hazel, anxious to get off to a confident start here.

:22:34.:22:44.
:22:44.:22:52.

On paper, her season's best is the best of any of these athletes, 13.

:22:52.:23:02.
:23:02.:23:03.

22, the best time of Tyminska would be worth 1000 points. Louise Hazel

:23:03.:23:09.

into the set position very smartly, and she and Samuel Cern are getting

:23:09.:23:19.
:23:19.:23:25.

away nicely. Louise Hazel has just been caught a little bit, Sprunger

:23:25.:23:29.

coming through on the inside. She was leading, but she started to

:23:29.:23:35.

fade a little bit as the race went on. Interesting to see what her

:23:35.:23:41.

time is, Colin? I think everyone will be interested, especially

:23:41.:23:49.

herself. It was a competent run by the winner, ultimately. A time of

:23:49.:23:54.

13.31. Following the trail led through as she moves away, the

:23:54.:24:00.

Ukrainian. Set a time just outside her personal best so it is a great

:24:00.:24:06.

start, but Louise just fading into fourth place. I think she will be a

:24:06.:24:11.

little bit disappointed with that. Another great angle - you can see

:24:11.:24:15.

how the ladies explode off the blocks and work hard into the

:24:15.:24:20.

barrier. It is early morning for these ladies to be out there

:24:20.:24:30.

hurdling. They know what they have to do but sometimes it can be

:24:30.:24:34.

difficult for different athlete. Head-on with Louise Hazel. Remember,

:24:35.:24:39.

she is a competent hurdler, fourth in the UK Championships so she

:24:39.:24:49.
:24:49.:24:51.

knows the event very well indeed. There was a massive roar that came

:24:51.:24:55.

from the crowd as she appeared on the track, I hope that didn't put

:24:55.:25:05.
:25:05.:25:18.

her off. A season's best and personal best for Melnychenko. That

:25:18.:25:27.

gives Louise Hazel 1053 points, the best time she has run this year.

:25:27.:25:30.

Louise Hazel has the honour of being the first British athlete on

:25:30.:25:37.

the track here in 2012. Am delighted to say Denise Lewis has

:25:37.:25:42.

brought some much-needed glamour to the studio. The nervous Denise

:25:42.:25:48.

Lewis, I think it is fair to say? didn't sleep a wink. I have waited

:25:48.:25:58.
:25:58.:25:59.

for this day. It is so exciting to see three British heptathletes. It

:25:59.:26:04.

is so exciting, a great day and hopefully Jessica Ennis will have a

:26:04.:26:09.

great hurdles. A very dispassionate analysis we saw on the videotape,

:26:09.:26:19.

it is different when you step into the stadium. This place will erupt.

:26:19.:26:27.

Everyone knows what this day means to Jessica, her friends, her family.

:26:27.:26:31.

The British supporters want to see her doing well so the roof will

:26:31.:26:37.

literally be blown off. There is nothing you can really do to

:26:37.:26:43.

prepare yourself, Michael. The journey into the unknown. If I

:26:43.:26:48.

think you can actually. Jessica will have that attitude... You know,

:26:48.:26:55.

there has been so much talk about her. There will be all of this

:26:55.:27:01.

support and an athlete can prepare themselves for that. You know what,

:27:01.:27:06.

I have got to come in here and not let that affect me, not even

:27:06.:27:11.

attempt to soak that in. I have got to be focused on the events I am

:27:11.:27:17.

going to take part in and focus on the execution, and spend that time

:27:17.:27:21.

visualising myself executing to perfection. That is what Jessica

:27:21.:27:26.

will be focused on. On the other hand, Louise Hazel is the type of

:27:26.:27:30.

athlete who will soak that all and perform well because of that

:27:30.:27:35.

because that is the type of personality she has. An athlete

:27:35.:27:40.

will perform depending on how best they respond to the pressure and

:27:40.:27:47.

the crowd. Next, a big moment for Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Paul

:27:47.:27:56.

Dickenson describing this one. The fourth heat, and the line-up

:27:56.:28:06.
:28:06.:28:11.

looks like this. Katarina Johnson- Thompson, the 19 year-old former

:28:11.:28:21.
:28:21.:28:25.

Great Britain in ninth May. -- in lane nine. She has already had a

:28:25.:28:32.

stellar junior career and who knows what the future holds for her. The

:28:32.:28:38.

world junior champion in the long jump. Full of talent, ability, and

:28:38.:28:43.

confidence. She has a lovely character and I think she is made

:28:43.:28:50.

for this sort of Arena. Unbelievable. It makes their hairs

:28:50.:29:00.
:29:00.:29:00.

stand on the back of your neck. Then a moment of quiet just to

:29:01.:29:10.
:29:11.:29:17.

focus on the job at hand. Katarina Johnson-Thompson's best is 13.48.

:29:17.:29:27.
:29:27.:29:35.

Ukrainian in main five picked up a medal in Helsinki. -- in lane five.

:29:35.:29:45.
:29:45.:29:46.

That is a false start. It looked like the Estonian in lane six. Get

:29:46.:29:51.

used to this on the first morning, because we have the preliminary

:29:51.:29:57.

round of the women's 100m which will certainly see a lot if

:29:58.:30:01.

inexperience athletes. In that event they will not be allowed to

:30:01.:30:06.

have a false start, it is a straightforward disqualification.

:30:06.:30:16.
:30:16.:30:21.

Not in the heptathlon though, it will be a warning. She looks a

:30:21.:30:31.
:30:31.:30:34.

little nervous, but so you should be. 19 years old. This experience

:30:34.:30:39.

will stand her in such good stead for the future, but she wants to

:30:39.:30:49.
:30:49.:31:09.

Thompson get a reasonable start. She is now going a little bit

:31:09.:31:14.

better, and it will be close on the line. It is the Ukrainian who wins

:31:14.:31:24.

it. She had a very good European Championships, the Ukrainian. It is

:31:24.:31:28.

a decent start from Johnson- Thompson, might be a little bit

:31:28.:31:36.

down on her personal best. Very tight on the line, just one

:31:36.:31:46.
:31:46.:31:50.

hundredth between first and second. Yosypenko, a big new personal best.

:31:50.:31:55.

Let's have a look at this. stores are very interesting race

:31:55.:32:04.

because people exploded out of the blocks. Mistakes, they clipped them,

:32:04.:32:09.

but overall the Ukrainian held her head together and took the dip

:32:09.:32:19.
:32:19.:32:19.

right at the end. This young lady has a massive, massive future it

:32:19.:32:24.

indeed. We mentioned this clearly right at the top that we thought

:32:24.:32:29.

Jessica was great as a junior, but Johnson-Thompson is an exceptional

:32:29.:32:33.

junior athlete and she will only get better and better. A very

:32:33.:32:38.

competent hurdler, a beautiful room, and she ends up with a personal

:32:38.:32:48.

best - 13.48. She will be pleased with that. What a start that would

:32:48.:32:58.
:32:58.:33:03.

be for Jessica Ennis, of course. perfect in the stadium. Jess

:33:03.:33:08.

looking very sharp. But all of her main rival, well all of her main

:33:08.:33:16.

rivals bar one, I think, are in this particular heat. You saw

:33:16.:33:20.

Karolina Tyminska, to be fair Jennifer Oeser the German as well.

:33:20.:33:29.

In this final heat of heptathlon we have Fountain. Number one American.

:33:29.:33:34.

We have Jessica Zelinka, the fastest hurdler on display here

:33:34.:33:39.

this morning. Canadian who has entered in the sprint hurdles but

:33:39.:33:42.

she has had one or two injury problem, we will be going on the

:33:42.:33:52.
:33:52.:33:52.

inside. Former European champion Nana Djimou Ida, from France.

:33:52.:33:56.

Jessica's nearest rival in heptathlon terms Tatyana Chernova,

:33:56.:34:05.

the Russian. Only three men have so far gone beyond the qualifying line.

:34:06.:34:11.

Three of the biggest names, what can Colin Myerscough do here? Giant

:34:11.:34:16.

of a man, doesn't always produce his best in major championships

:34:16.:34:26.
:34:26.:34:27.

though and not on this occasion either. Well, he doesn't portray

:34:27.:34:34.

much emotion, Colin Myerscough. But he may well just to find something

:34:34.:34:40.

a little bit extra here. So far, 12 best throw also go through to the

:34:41.:34:44.

final, if there aren't 12 beyond that qualifying line, which at the

:34:44.:34:53.

minute that is not looking likely, he prove. That is not good at all.

:34:53.:35:01.

18.75 and then 18.95. So much expectation on the slender

:35:01.:35:10.

shoulders of Jessica Ennis from the city of Sheffield club. Here is the

:35:10.:35:20.
:35:20.:35:38.

start list for the final heat of Zelinka. She won the Canadian

:35:38.:35:44.

individual hurdles title this years beating some superb opposition,

:35:44.:35:51.

12.68. Lifetime best set this year. Nana Djimou Ida. She is a 13.11

:35:51.:35:55.

performer, had a birthday yesterday. And she is a former European

:35:55.:36:05.
:36:05.:36:08.

outdoor champion. Brianne Theisen. Number two Canadian. Number two to

:36:08.:36:18.

Jessica Zelinka. Uhunoma Osazuwa. The Nigerian record holder. Does

:36:18.:36:26.

most of her training and competing in the United States. A very tall

:36:26.:36:29.

figure of Tatyana Chernova. World World Champion and Olympic bronze

:36:29.:36:39.
:36:39.:36:43.

hamstring injury in the European Championships last year but she is

:36:44.:36:48.

a useful all rounder. But the biggest cheer of all will be

:36:48.:36:58.
:36:58.:37:04.

reserved for this lady. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Jessica Ennis has got

:37:04.:37:09.

the potential to set this stadium alight. Hyleas Fountain, 12.86,

:37:10.:37:14.

lifetime best, and the Olympic silver medallist four years ago, so

:37:14.:37:21.

set a personal best in the hurdles, actually in that Bird's Nest

:37:21.:37:31.
:37:31.:37:42.

Stadium. But for Jess Ennis, her and this is one of her favourite

:37:42.:37:52.
:37:52.:38:08.

hopes it stars Jess Ennis of Great Jessica Ennis has been closed down

:38:08.:38:11.

by Sara Aerts. Now she is beginning to pull away on the inside. Jessica

:38:11.:38:16.

Zelinka is going well this is a tremendous run, by Jessica Ennis.

:38:16.:38:26.
:38:26.:38:29.

Oh my goodness. Wow! The fastest time ever. By a he want Leith any

:38:29.:38:36.

multi-eventer, a new British record. It is legal. 1.3 metres a second.

:38:36.:38:42.

Oh! The power of the crowd carried Jess Ennis through to that time.

:38:42.:38:48.

And the rest of her come pelt fors must be in despair, seeing how fast

:38:48.:38:56.

the British athlete has just run. - - competitors. My goodness, Colin.

:38:56.:39:01.

That is an understatement. She drove out the blocks, she has a

:39:01.:39:05.

real understanding of this. runs a lot on the circuit. She

:39:05.:39:10.

knows the distance, what it is like getting close to the barrier, she

:39:10.:39:15.

no what it is like to compete against the best, that time of

:39:15.:39:21.

12.54 second would put her in the piedge. I tell you what Colin, the

:39:21.:39:26.

greatest heptathlete in history the world record holder and the Olympic

:39:26.:39:29.

record holder is in the stadium and even she would have been very very

:39:29.:39:35.

impressed with that run. G It was incredible. It was more than

:39:35.:39:39.

outstanding. You are talking about she setting a British record during

:39:39.:39:44.

a heptathlon event. She was strong, she was aggressive, she was focused.

:39:44.:39:48.

She was fast, she was deliberate in every movement over those barrier,

:39:48.:39:55.

and this is what happens when you get all those elements right. Fast

:39:55.:40:01.

time, a British record, and of course, sets her up beautifully for

:40:01.:40:05.

this Olympic title. Wonderful wonderful Jess Ennis, watch this.

:40:05.:40:09.

Explodes out the block, she knows as he comes into the straights, he

:40:09.:40:14.

is not the fastest on paper, she knows there are women who have run

:40:14.:40:17.

quicker but no messing about. She grabs the lead, and about half way,

:40:18.:40:23.

and believes in herself, she pushes on and drives to that line and gets

:40:23.:40:29.

rewarded with a phenomenal, and I can't underestimate when I say a

:40:29.:40:39.
:40:39.:40:39.

phenomenal personal best. Look at that. Two hundredths of a second

:40:39.:40:42.

off the national record set by Tiffany Porter. Jessica Zelinka was

:40:42.:40:50.

one of the fastest of all time. Hyleas Fountain the Olympic silver

:40:50.:40:54.

medallist, and where is Tatyana Chernova, she is down in eighth

:40:54.:40:59.

place. That is almost a full second behind Jessica Ennis what a start

:40:59.:41:09.
:41:09.:41:13.

start, this is the result of the previous heat. Yosypenko, good

:41:13.:41:19.

beginning for her competition. Katarina Johnson-Thompson as we

:41:19.:41:23.

mentioned earlier equaling her personal best in fourth place so a

:41:23.:41:28.

brilliant start for the British heptathletes. There is still a buzz

:41:28.:41:32.

going round this stadium, because of what has happened here over the

:41:32.:41:37.

last five minutes. If Jess Ennis can continue in that sort of form,

:41:37.:41:46.

nobody will touch her for the gold medal. Early days yet. But what a

:41:46.:41:52.

start by the Briton. Jessica Ennis leads. That is a huge, huge points

:41:52.:41:59.

total for Jess. Jess number two, Jessica Zelinka from Canada.

:41:59.:42:06.

Tatyana Chernova is well done the Tatyana Chernova is well done the

:42:07.:42:11.

table. -- down the table. Steve Cram has calmed down. -- Steve

:42:11.:42:16.

Cram's calm down might fall on deaf ears in the studio. That was

:42:16.:42:20.

incredible. We talked about pressure, an event like hurdles is

:42:20.:42:25.

so conducive to having that energy, you can use it, it translates in,

:42:25.:42:30.

your attack out of the block, and I am just blown away by that time. We

:42:30.:42:35.

knew Jessica had more in her, we have felt she has underperformed in

:42:35.:42:40.

hurdles what a day, what a day to show the world just exactly what

:42:40.:42:46.

she is capable of. Great start. Fantastic start. A fantastic start.

:42:46.:42:50.

And what an incredible time Mike. I mean, two tenth faster than

:42:50.:42:56.

anything we could have thought. More than two tenths off her

:42:56.:43:00.

personal best. She is ready to go, understanding what is ahead of her,

:43:00.:43:04.

knowing she would have to got off to a great start this is incredible.

:43:04.:43:11.

This is the most solid race I have serve seen run, she got a little

:43:11.:43:15.

competition but she responded incredibly well, a solid race from

:43:15.:43:20.

start to finish. A great, unbelievable start from her here

:43:20.:43:25.

and just really crisp, solid over each barrier. The start that she

:43:25.:43:29.

needed to get this going, as I said before, today is the day for her,

:43:29.:43:33.

she has to get a huge lead. She has put incredible pressure on the rest

:43:34.:43:37.

of the girls. We know she has been desperately trying to get that

:43:38.:43:43.

first foot down out of block, to maximum effect. So far we haven't

:43:43.:43:47.

quite seen it. But daid she delivered it. She has had a

:43:47.:43:51.

fantastic training camp. Everyone has gone as well as can be expected

:43:51.:43:56.

and she has turned up here in shape. First class hurdling technique,

:43:56.:44:00.

great solid mind, you know, the mind she must have, to be able to

:44:00.:44:04.

deliver that on day like this is sensational. Only one event of

:44:04.:44:08.

seven. What advice do you give her now, she has done something which I

:44:08.:44:13.

am sure has shocked her. That is the challenge for all the

:44:13.:44:17.

heptathletes, almost to leave the baggage behind. Whether it has been

:44:17.:44:21.

fantastic or bad, you have to leave it behind. You have to refocus for

:44:21.:44:27.

the high jump and use the energy of the crowd for that event. Michael,

:44:27.:44:33.

she does need to calm down a bit as Crammy said. Get it into context.

:44:33.:44:38.

The celebrations can come after if she gets the gold medalment Jess

:44:38.:44:41.

will handle it well. She will go on to the next event. What she will do

:44:42.:44:46.

is take that as a huge positive. Now she has a huge lead already

:44:46.:44:51.

after one event. I think she will take that into the next event,

:44:51.:44:55.

understanding this was a great performance, she will want the keep

:44:55.:44:57.

that lead, especially to the end of today, because tomorrow is going to

:44:57.:45:01.

be a bit more of a challenge. a start, now back to the

:45:02.:45:11.
:45:12.:45:17.

triple jump qualifying has starreded. A terrific start for the

:45:17.:45:22.

British number one. 14 metres 40 is what is required to take them

:45:22.:45:31.

through to the final on Sunday. Nobody has got to grips with the

:45:31.:45:41.
:45:41.:45:48.

conditions yet. Leading jump so far the Ukraine and she has the leading

:45:48.:45:57.

jump so far. Yamile Aldama, she is in the final. Plenty more tho come

:45:57.:46:00.

from the stadium. What an amazing start, but for the moment it is

:46:00.:46:03.

start, but for the moment it is back to Michelle in the studio.

:46:03.:46:07.

Thank you very much. Yamile Aldama nearly 40 years old, mother of two

:46:07.:46:10.

and what a great performance from Jessica Ennis, now we see why she

:46:10.:46:15.

has become known as the Golden Girl of British athletic, she delivered

:46:15.:46:20.

that event, the 100m hurdle is one of her favourite events, what a way

:46:20.:46:25.

to go on to the next bit of the the heptathlon. It looked perfect in

:46:25.:46:28.

the stadium this morning, not just the sport but the conditions. Let

:46:28.:46:32.

us see what it is like at Eton Dorney, because we have a crucial

:46:32.:46:37.

couple of hours in the rowing coming up. So let us join John and

:46:37.:46:41.

Steve. The sun they have got in the stadium has deserted us here. These

:46:41.:46:45.

are shots from a few moment ago, now we have cloud cover and strong

:46:45.:46:49.

cross winds, as you can see, which has meant at the draw for the lane

:46:49.:46:55.

draw, for the finals that is coming up, including Katherine Grainger

:46:55.:47:00.

and Anna Watkins in the women's double scull has been redrawn. I

:47:00.:47:05.

have David Tainer with me. What are the conditions like? How bad is

:47:05.:47:11.

that wind? It is pretty strong. It is blowing diagonally across the

:47:11.:47:15.

course, and so you have half a head wind and half a cross wind. The

:47:15.:47:18.

side of the course we are stood on now, is likely to be favoured,

:47:18.:47:22.

sheltered from the wind and with less waves as well. This was the

:47:22.:47:27.

issue yesterday, that caused a lot of controversy with the men's

:47:27.:47:32.

lightweight four who felt they had a bit of a rough deal. Is this the

:47:32.:47:37.

organising body bolting the door after the horse has gone. Yesterday

:47:37.:47:41.

was different. The wind was more directly across and fluctuating

:47:41.:47:45.

between the tail and head wine. Do you put them on this side for a

:47:45.:47:49.

head wind or the other for a tail wind? That is the dilemma, what

:47:49.:47:53.

they should have done is say we don't know what it is going to be,

:47:53.:47:59.

it is unfair. So we will delay racing, today it is a bit more of

:47:59.:48:03.

head wind so it is more oven it is this side, it is not fluctuating as

:48:03.:48:06.

much so that is why they feel they can allocate the lanes from that

:48:06.:48:16.
:48:16.:48:19.

They have delayed racing by half- an-hour, so many of the races are

:48:19.:48:22.

on in half-an-hour behind schedule but we think the main finals will

:48:22.:48:28.

be on time. David, we will speak more in the second but let's go

:48:28.:48:35.

over to Matthew Pinsent. I have the lane drawer. The finals are

:48:35.:48:45.
:48:45.:49:01.

unchanged. 11:30am, the men -- men's quad. That moves from here

:49:01.:49:11.

over to lane two. The men's pair goes into lane five, a big

:49:11.:49:17.

improvement from them. The women's double moves into lane five, so one

:49:17.:49:24.

closer to their main opposition. The best lane will be Australia.

:49:24.:49:29.

Men's single, Alan Campbell, goes the wrong way into lane three so

:49:29.:49:39.
:49:39.:49:41.

they are definitely accepting the quickest lanes are on this side.

:49:41.:49:48.

Matthew was going through the redraws. Alan Campbell will be

:49:48.:49:54.

disappointed to have been moved into lane three, would you agree

:49:54.:50:00.

with that? He will be. He was second in the semi-final, so he has

:50:00.:50:05.

come the wrong side of that, if you like. On the previous draw he could

:50:06.:50:13.

have been in lane two, which he would have been less happy with.

:50:13.:50:17.

purely technical terms, it is a bit like Horseracing being drawn on the

:50:17.:50:22.

wrong side of the course. On one side of the course you have no

:50:22.:50:29.

chance, on the other side you have. What margins are we talking about?

:50:29.:50:34.

From one lane to the next you are talking about probably a couple of

:50:34.:50:43.

feet difference. From lane one to lane six, you are probably talking

:50:43.:50:48.

about a length difference. The ones who have qualified best and next to

:50:48.:50:55.

each other, so likely there is not much difference from one lane to

:50:55.:50:59.

another, but it is how you approach it mentally which is the problem.

:50:59.:51:08.

Some people will think "o god, I am in the wrong lane". He can't see

:51:08.:51:13.

this as a disadvantage. He has got to think about trying harder, if he

:51:13.:51:19.

can, because you know what he is like! If you feel like you have the

:51:19.:51:29.
:51:29.:51:30.

disadvantage, you will go slower because of it. Does it affect

:51:30.:51:36.

Katherine Grainger and Anna Watson? I am certain it will not faze them

:51:36.:51:42.

in any way. They will be pleased that if people feel it is less fair

:51:42.:51:46.

on the other side and they are in the right place, they will be fine.

:51:46.:51:52.

At the end of the day, it is an outdoor sport. I believe they make

:51:52.:51:59.

the right judgement and am sure they will be positive whatever lane

:51:59.:52:04.

they are in. How were they at breakfast this morning? I was out

:52:04.:52:09.

jogging when I have my breakfast so I didn't see them but they were in

:52:09.:52:15.

a great place last night when I saw them. They will be good to go, no-

:52:15.:52:18.

holds-barred and determined to win the gold medal. Were you will be

:52:18.:52:25.

back with you in... I always look at the clock on the boat house, it

:52:25.:52:31.

is so big - we will be back with you in about 30 minutes.

:52:31.:52:38.

Don't forget, there was another one of the early lunch times required

:52:38.:52:46.

because the race is at 10 past 12. We are concentrating on athletics

:52:46.:52:50.

at the moment because it has been a fantastic start of the day inside

:52:50.:52:56.

the stadium. Let's get back in there. What a great start, Jonathan,

:52:56.:53:00.

from Jessica Ennis. That time was the same as the gold medal-winning

:53:00.:53:07.

performance in Beijing in the 100m women's hurdles.

:53:07.:53:12.

We are amazed here. As you say, that statistic from Beijing, and I

:53:12.:53:19.

don't think any of us can't quite believe what she did. It was beyond

:53:19.:53:24.

the stuff of dreams really, in terms of the start for the golden

:53:24.:53:30.

girl of these Olympic Games. Absolutely, and I couldn't agree

:53:30.:53:35.

more. To come here and deliver a performance of that colour other,

:53:35.:53:40.

it just puts it into perspective why she is so popular and why we

:53:40.:53:45.

have every confidence that she can deliver in this stadium because she

:53:45.:53:48.

has to have nerves of steel to be able to cope with everything that

:53:48.:53:56.

has been put in front of her. It was an excellent performance.

:53:56.:54:05.

happens now? High jump at 11:15am, although Jessica will not come in

:54:05.:54:09.

until a little later than that, but it is a quick turnaround, isn't it?

:54:10.:54:15.

Yes, any baggage has to be put to bed. She doesn't want to carry that

:54:15.:54:20.

excitement into the high jump. She needs to refocus, think of the

:54:20.:54:24.

technical aspects and what she needs to do for that event. It is

:54:24.:54:29.

one of her best events, and what she wants to do is to lay down a

:54:29.:54:34.

big offer between herself and her next competitiveness and Chernova

:54:34.:54:40.

did not look good at all, as we saw. Dobrynska or started reasonably

:54:40.:54:45.

well, but they will have looked at that and thought... What would they

:54:45.:54:52.

have thought? Pack our shoes and let's go home. It is disheartening.

:54:52.:55:02.
:55:02.:55:04.

Both of those competitors are tough. They will be focusing on their own

:55:04.:55:09.

personal bests. A word about Katarina Johnson-Thompson, she

:55:09.:55:15.

looked a bit nervous, didn't she? Before she looked nervous, she

:55:15.:55:21.

looked overwhelmed. Her reaction to the crowd was really cute, but then

:55:21.:55:27.

she almost went into, oh, I need to get focused here. It is great for

:55:27.:55:32.

her to get that type of support. She is trying to come here and have

:55:32.:55:39.

her best performance, whatever that may be. She will be happy as long

:55:39.:55:43.

as she can walk away feeling like she did a great performance. At the

:55:43.:55:49.

other great performance was in the women's triple jump and it is an

:55:49.:55:59.

amazing story. It is a heart- warming story. Jamil Has been

:55:59.:56:02.

through so much and she has been desperate to have an opportunity

:56:02.:56:07.

like this, to compete in the stadium and qualifying comfortably

:56:07.:56:11.

on her first jump. We have not spoken much about her in the lead-

:56:11.:56:17.

up to these games, but she is someone to watch. She was world

:56:17.:56:22.

indoor champion. She jumped way further than she had done for a lot

:56:22.:56:26.

of years. I think many people thought her career was petering out.

:56:26.:56:33.

She jumped 14.89 I think to win those world indoors. She has done

:56:33.:56:39.

the business, got the qualifying out of the way. She made automatic

:56:39.:56:43.

qualification with her first jump, and afterwards she spoke to Phil

:56:43.:56:49.

Jones. A fantastic for four months, the crowd amazing.

:56:49.:56:55.

How was the experience? This is my fifth Olympic Games and I have

:56:55.:57:01.

never experienced this crowd in the qualifying round. It is amazing.

:57:01.:57:09.

Normally it is not empty, but not like this. It is great. And euros

:57:09.:57:18.

to the occasion. A fine jump, and a safe jumper. Yes, I was not running

:57:18.:57:23.

as fast. I was a bit concerned because we had head wind, and the

:57:23.:57:30.

wind was changing, so I wanted to make sure. Are you feeling good?

:57:30.:57:39.

Yes, absolutely. And you also ran a fourth placed finish at the

:57:39.:57:44.

Olympics, a fifth place, now something better I hope? Well, we

:57:44.:57:49.

have to change that. We are going out on the track now for the

:57:49.:57:58.

women's 100m first round. The first ever female athlete from Qatar, a

:57:58.:58:03.

bit of history now. Yes, just 17 bit of history now. Yes, just 17

:58:04.:58:07.

years old and what an honour for her and her country. These

:58:07.:58:13.

preliminary rounds before the big guns, out, getting them to qualify

:58:13.:58:23.
:58:23.:58:28.

for this evening. Just six teenagers in here. One of the

:58:28.:58:33.

athlete has pulled a hamstring, that is a tragic situation for her.

:58:34.:58:40.

Winning the race in 11 point 87. After being given the opportunity

:58:40.:58:46.

to come here and represent her country, it is a sad way for that

:58:46.:58:52.

to end. She did look rather nervous on the start line. She may be new

:58:52.:58:56.

she was carrying an injury coming into this and you could understand

:58:56.:59:06.
:59:06.:59:06.

why she would want to at least give it a try. The tears now come for

:59:06.:59:11.

the youngster. What a pity. You could see from the start whatever

:59:11.:59:21.
:59:21.:59:23.

injury she has been carrying, she wanted to give it a go and why not.

:59:23.:59:28.

Qatar athletics is growing and building, and they have been

:59:28.:59:31.

bidding for various championships including the World Championships

:59:31.:59:36.

and the Olympic Games. Obviously trying to encourage their female

:59:36.:59:45.

athletes to take part. A sad sight to see. Our Prime Minister has got

:59:45.:59:50.

a couple of great guest alongside him - Sally Gunnell. I saw her

:59:50.:59:55.

earlier in the week, and she was looking forward to the athletics of

:59:55.:59:59.

course. She is looking forward to Perri Shakes-Drayton and her

:59:59.:00:09.
:00:09.:00:37.

attempt. Everyone is looking It cost Jessica Ennis, Katarina

:00:37.:00:42.

Johnson-Thompson, but it has not been going very well so far in the

:00:42.:00:52.
:00:52.:00:53.

shot put. Carl Myerscough did not have a good first two rounds.

:00:53.:00:59.

Plenty of British support for him, who was off balance on that one.

:00:59.:01:04.

Needed to go beyond 20 metres at least, as he walked out on that

:01:04.:01:14.
:01:14.:01:15.

third qualifying round. We will have no presence in the men's shot

:01:15.:01:25.
:01:25.:01:35.

put final, which takes place this put is the next event for her. What

:01:35.:01:42.

the start for both of those athletes, and I am sure we will

:01:42.:01:46.

enjoy the experience of watching how she copes with the pressure. So

:01:46.:01:53.

far, so good. Just finding some shade. It is quite warm in the

:01:53.:02:03.
:02:03.:02:06.

arena this morning. The men's shot put qualifying has already finished.

:02:06.:02:16.
:02:16.:02:16.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 91 seconds

:02:16.:03:02.

Reese Hoffa, who we saw earlier so full for the first morning of an

:03:02.:03:09.

athletics programme. There is the line up for the heat four of the

:03:09.:03:19.
:03:19.:03:35.

we have a record for -- athlete is Wisil of papaya new gippy. There is

:03:35.:03:45.
:03:45.:03:48.

she is. 11.49. -- guinea. That is a life, once in 2010 and once in this

:03:48.:03:55.

year as well. Alatoa there, 23 - year-old. Don't have any figures on

:03:55.:04:05.

her whatsoever. The slowest athlete in the field, who we do have

:04:05.:04:11.

figures for, Gezah, of Libya, just one lane outside of Alatoa, she is

:04:11.:04:21.
:04:21.:04:27.

will make it through the first round this evening. Very slow start

:04:27.:04:32.

from some of athletes. Colley is going well. Look at this Wisil,

:04:32.:04:39.

racing away, so the second qualifying position goes to Colley

:04:39.:04:46.

of Gambia. Winning time 11.59, just a tenth of a second outside of a

:04:46.:04:50.

lifetime best. Any lessons to be learned for some of these athletes?

:04:50.:04:55.

It is, loads of lessons they are picking up from here. Just running

:04:55.:04:58.

in this stadium, a capacity crowd, most of these athletes would have

:04:58.:05:07.

never experienced that in their life, I am hopely are enjoying it.

:05:07.:05:11.

Wisil didn't get the best of the starts. She kept powering away from

:05:11.:05:17.

the field once she started. It was a nice performance from her. 11.6

:05:17.:05:27.
:05:27.:05:31.

the winning time. She will be excellent first attempt, going

:05:31.:05:36.

through, straight away. Not having to worry about qualifying in the

:05:36.:05:42.

top 12 position. Got well over the distance required. That is an

:05:42.:05:44.

excellent performance from Kimberley Williams from Jamaica.

:05:44.:05:50.

That is the green light. 14.40 or mo gets you straight into the final.

:05:50.:05:55.

That is very much into her sort of personal best territory. He is a

:05:55.:06:02.

14.52 at best. That is a good -- she. That is a good really first

:06:02.:06:12.
:06:12.:06:12.

round effort for Williams. Jamaica the most expensed of Trisha Smith

:06:12.:06:17.

as well. She joins Yamile Aldama. 14.53. That is a new personal best

:06:17.:06:26.

by a centimetres, that is a little surprising, but well done to her.

:06:26.:06:30.

But we saw Colin Myerscough finishing in 29th place in the shot

:06:30.:06:33.

put. Now he is downstairs with Phil put. Now he is downstairs with Phil

:06:33.:06:39.

Jones. I know you had set ou a lot of Olympics and waiting for in bun

:06:39.:06:42.

able to seize it this morning. Obviously a massive disappointment.

:06:42.:06:47.

I felt great out there. The crowd was amazing, I have never probably

:06:47.:06:51.

felt better going into a competition, but each throw I maybe

:06:51.:06:56.

tried a little too hard. I didn't connect with each one, something

:06:56.:07:00.

slightly went wrong and I didn't get one good one out I was capable,

:07:00.:07:06.

and you know, no words to describe the dispointment, but it was

:07:06.:07:11.

fantastic to be here. Amazing experience, you know, to compete

:07:11.:07:17.

here. You know, what can I say? is packed for a morning session. We

:07:17.:07:21.

have never experienced anything like it. Were the nefs greater than

:07:21.:07:27.

yuebl for you? -- nerves? Yes, the adrenaline is enormous I think that

:07:27.:07:31.

was, I didn't just quite relax enough and get it to click, you

:07:31.:07:36.

know, I probably just tried a bit too hard and it didn't come off.

:07:37.:07:41.

know how tough it was for do you get here to go from the European

:07:41.:07:46.

Championships in Estonia, were you trying to tap into that kind of

:07:47.:07:51.

energy? Yes, the energy was there, the power was there, so it is

:07:51.:07:56.

frustrating, you know, I felt like, I had something big in me, but I

:07:56.:08:03.

didn't, it didn't click. Thank you for talking to us. Disappointment

:08:03.:08:06.

there for Colin Myerscough. There is uninterrupted coverage on the

:08:06.:08:15.

red button. We are going to take a short break. For a moment, back to

:08:15.:08:19.

you. What an exciting start to the morning. One of the athletics

:08:19.:08:22.

highlights later on will be more of the heptathlon, Jessica Ennis will

:08:22.:08:26.

be in the high jump later on. The heats get under way in the next

:08:26.:08:31.

couple of minutes, ten minutes or so. Because she traditionally does

:08:31.:08:35.

well she will go a bit later on. Overon BBC Three there is live

:08:35.:08:39.

swimming for you right now, with Beijing bronze medallist David

:08:39.:08:45.

Davis, he is about to go in the 1500 metres heat. Now, some

:08:45.:08:50.

Morrowing and we have seen some famous fai -- faces, no shortage of

:08:50.:08:54.

celebrating royalty today, but as Eton Dorney, there is a doctor in

:08:54.:09:00.

the house, who has new found love of life on the water. Why don't we

:09:00.:09:07.

give it a quick burst to start off with? Blow the cobwebs away. Fine.

:09:07.:09:17.
:09:17.:09:33.

Of all the thousands of rowing fans who have come to Dorney today, I

:09:33.:09:38.

think it is fair to say that Matt Smith and Sam Haul perhaps among

:09:38.:09:44.

the most passionate. Come on guy, or should I say Bert and Dickie.

:09:44.:09:47.

are among the most passionate. have a lot of excitement to see how

:09:47.:09:54.

it should really be done, after our... Butchering it. The reviews

:09:54.:10:00.

from the rowing fans of your efforts. Pitiful. I wasn't going to

:10:00.:10:05.

be that harsh. It was, even the boys down at leerpbd, trying to

:10:05.:10:10.

scull in hose old boats was a blooming nightmare. You did well

:10:10.:10:14.

there, language! It is harder than it look, I can say that. I thought

:10:14.:10:18.

rowing was about stamina and strength, but there is technique

:10:18.:10:23.

and balance, and we had about five days to try and emulate Olympic

:10:23.:10:27.

champions, which as I am sure you will know probably not quite enough

:10:27.:10:34.

time. Deeply unconvincing. Deeply. What I said is it's a lot easier to

:10:34.:10:39.

teach A&E actors to row than to teach rowers to act. We may have

:10:39.:10:43.

disproved that theory. I think the rowing community would disagree.

:10:43.:10:48.

What are you looking forward to today? The double sculling pair,

:10:48.:10:53.

Katherine Grainger and the single as well, because... Alan Campbell.

:10:53.:10:57.

We had brief times in single sculls and both of us made it about 20

:10:57.:11:01.

feet before we fell in, so I am very impressed to see how anyone

:11:01.:11:07.

can row a single scull down a 2,000 metre course without falling in,

:11:07.:11:12.

let alone at the pace. Are you ready for the Dorney roar? I am

:11:12.:11:16.

excited. It is strange. I don't know what to expect. Because it is

:11:16.:11:21.

such an unknown enty in an him pib final to me. Once in a lifetime. So

:11:21.:11:25.

yeah. A lot of noise. A lot of noise. Hopefully that should be

:11:25.:11:33.

something we can contribute to at least. Enjoy the day. Bert and

:11:33.:11:37.

Dickie! We will take you to dorn in a moment, because the first of the

:11:37.:11:42.

rogue finals four in all are happening, including that one

:11:42.:11:45.

involving Katherine Grainger. This is the day that the stadium has

:11:46.:11:50.

really come into its own. We have seen it burst into life. It is

:11:50.:11:54.

packed in there and they have had good reason to cheer. We have seen

:11:54.:11:59.

fantastic form from Jessica Ennis and lots more to come. What is next

:12:00.:12:07.

Jonathan? It is Dai Greene in the 400m hurtles. We will have an

:12:07.:12:10.

Olympic Stadium roar for him. He is the World Champion, I think he

:12:10.:12:20.

comes to London with one thing on his mind. Pride myself on hard work.

:12:20.:12:27.

Green will rise first time. Strong survival at the end. Doing

:12:27.:12:37.
:12:37.:12:37.

everything I can to come away with the gold medal. I have to set my

:12:37.:12:42.

standards high. Dai Greene takes Britain's first gold of the

:12:42.:12:46.

championships P The vast majority of people will be cheering for any

:12:47.:12:51.

British athlete in there. It will be a scenario no-one has

:12:51.:12:55.

experienced before. It is going to be superb, it s and I think all the

:12:55.:12:58.

athletes are excited and they see it as a an opportunity, not

:12:59.:13:04.

something that is, you know, nerve- wracking or daunting, it is a

:13:04.:13:10.

massive opportunity for all athletes. As for you and your own

:13:10.:13:14.

personal preparations, you have had a tremendous last few race, you

:13:14.:13:18.

pleased where you are at? Yes, run very well on my last two outings, I

:13:18.:13:23.

have. I feel I have more to give. I seem to be moving forward, and I am

:13:23.:13:27.

fitter and stronger than three or four weeks' ago, I am eager to get

:13:27.:13:31.

on with thing, I will find my rhythm in three or four days. I

:13:31.:13:36.

pride myself on my hard work, I do. It shows, it does, when you have

:13:36.:13:41.

those rounds, the strong survive at the end and it was the case in day

:13:42.:13:48.

-- Daegu. Here is the chance for Green to seize the moment. Green

:13:48.:13:53.

wins for Britain P Hopefully it will be a similar result in London,

:13:53.:13:57.

I certainly feel as though there is nothing else I could have done to

:13:57.:14:02.

prepare, so that makes me happy. You when you look back on the year,

:14:02.:14:07.

you kept quiet about the knee problem you had and the surgery.

:14:07.:14:11.

How much of a worry was that and how pleased were you with the way

:14:11.:14:16.

you were able to rebound from it? It was difficult at the time, it

:14:16.:14:22.

was. Not being able to train when you wanted to. Having to start two-

:14:22.:14:26.

and-a-half months later. It was a similar tame frame I had last year

:14:26.:14:30.

from the Commonwealths to the start of the season. I knew if I could

:14:30.:14:34.

get into shape. Everything had to go well, it did. I couldn't allow

:14:34.:14:38.

for another lay off. There was a lot of pressure on the support

:14:38.:14:40.

staff. They did a fantastic job with me. I believed I could get

:14:40.:14:44.

there, but you know, you do have some harder days and the days when

:14:44.:14:48.

your knees hurt. It can be difficult, but it helps build your

:14:48.:14:53.

character as well, and I am happy to come through it and I have run a

:14:53.:14:59.

person al best in the last few week, if you had given me that a few

:14:59.:15:09.
:15:09.:15:12.

moneys ago I would have taken your hand off. There is the matter of

:15:12.:15:17.

his puert Raikkonen rivalry friend, my enemy I call you out. You, you

:15:17.:15:21.

there with the bad thorn in your side. You there my friend with the

:15:21.:15:26.

winning air. Dai hasn't defeated Coulson all summer long but he is

:15:26.:15:30.

getting nearer. He has run especially all season. He hasn't

:15:30.:15:34.

improved too much but he hasn't dropped off. He has found a level

:15:34.:15:38.

and he is consistent. I know he will have noticed I have been

:15:38.:15:42.

chipping away at him, getting closer, but in the last few World

:15:42.:15:46.

Championships he has picked up a couple of silvers. I know he will

:15:46.:15:49.

be desperate to get the gold in London. I will be able to do my

:15:49.:15:53.

best. I have a lot of respect for him. Hopefully I can turn the

:15:53.:16:02.

tables on him. You want that gold again? Yes, in the winter you don't

:16:02.:16:05.

think I am going to run thup hill to get that blons. Being World

:16:05.:16:10.

Champion last year I have to set my standards high. I am number two in

:16:10.:16:14.

the world this year at the moment, I am doing everything I can to come

:16:14.:16:18.

away with a gold medal. That has been my aim. You will have to ask

:16:18.:16:26.

me later on if I am happy. One thing is you are guaranteed you

:16:26.:16:29.

will get everything on the track he will produce when it matters. I

:16:29.:16:33.

don't think there is any real concern he won't respond. He will

:16:33.:16:37.

respond. I think he will have a great merfor -- performance, I

:16:37.:16:43.

think he will have his personal best. His problem will be Coulson.

:16:43.:16:48.

Disclaimer, I represent Coulson. You have a vested interest. But he

:16:48.:16:52.

has been so consistent over the last few year, silver medallist in

:16:52.:16:55.

Berlin, last year behind Dai. This year, I think the biggest problem

:16:55.:17:00.

for Dai is going to be that he ran his personal best and lost to

:17:00.:17:03.

Coulson, that is tough when you have your personal best, because

:17:03.:17:08.

then you are saying what do I have to do? On the other hand he is such

:17:08.:17:13.

a tough competitor, he trains hard, he has unbelievable confidence.

:17:13.:17:16.

Believes he can compete against anyone he won't be intimidated by

:17:16.:17:21.

Coulson, he will come out focused today, ready to go and work on his

:17:21.:17:24.

race through each round. He will be in the mix in the finals but the

:17:24.:17:29.

hurdles is one of the toughest events in athletics right now.

:17:29.:17:36.

Entered in the 400 hurdles is Angelo Taylor. Two times World

:17:36.:17:40.

Champion Clement. The South African. Commonwealth Games champion. Gordon

:17:40.:17:44.

from Trinidad. There is so many great athletes. So many champions

:17:44.:17:49.

in this race, that it will be tough just to get a medal. OK. You

:17:49.:17:52.

represent Coulson as you said. Give me an objective answer. He hasn't

:17:52.:17:57.

won a big title before, how well will he respond to the pressure?

:17:57.:18:01.

will respond really well, because he, he has been so close so many

:18:01.:18:06.

time, he has been silver medallist two times, and now he has been

:18:06.:18:10.

undediabetes -- defeated this year. He has beaten everybody. So he is

:18:10.:18:16.

very confident. It is funy I saw a little Jedi mind trick I was trying

:18:16.:18:20.

to play, Coulson has the pressure on him, I don't have the pressure,

:18:20.:18:24.

his country, no-one has won an Olympic gold medal, so he has that

:18:24.:18:29.

pressure, I was thinking "That is pretty good." At the end of the day

:18:29.:18:32.

both guys will feel the pressure because they want to win. I think

:18:32.:18:37.

that Coulson is in a great position, because he is, you know, he has won

:18:37.:18:40.

everything, he has beaten everybody, he comes in here with a tremendous

:18:40.:18:43.

amount of confidence but nobody is going to give him anything. We are

:18:43.:18:53.
:18:53.:18:59.

talking about those two guys, but That is coming up on BBC Three, but

:18:59.:19:03.

for the moment, back to you, Michelle.

:19:03.:19:08.

We haven't shown you swimming yet today and to his time to show you a

:19:08.:19:12.

glimpse of what is happening in the aquatic centre right now because

:19:12.:19:17.

David Davies is going in the 1,500m so let's see how that is going for

:19:17.:19:27.
:19:27.:19:45.

medals and he is amongst the best. He will be shooting for the gold,

:19:45.:19:55.
:19:55.:20:09.

but not many people in the swimming fraternity can see be on him.

:20:09.:20:15.

turning third, and he looks tired. If he tires any more, that will be

:20:15.:20:25.
:20:25.:20:36.

very useful. two lengths to go in this 1,500m freestyle. Ryan

:20:36.:20:46.
:20:46.:20:49.

Cochrane now about 15 metres ahead, and it looks like Great Britain's

:20:50.:20:59.
:21:00.:21:08.

Dan Fogg is on pace. He tried the 100m last year, didn't do it, just

:21:08.:21:18.
:21:18.:21:19.

stick to what you are good at - the 200m, the 400m. Park is coming back

:21:19.:21:28.

very fast indeed. Look at that! Park of Korea finishing in second

:21:28.:21:38.
:21:38.:22:02.

place, and his time is 14:56.89. What a great swim. Surely six

:22:02.:22:12.
:22:12.:22:24.

people won't beat him in the next heat. Dan Fogg lying In a very good

:22:24.:22:30.

place indeed. Rapping on David Davies' career is quite important

:22:30.:22:35.

because I imagine that will be his last race. He has had a fantastic

:22:35.:22:43.

career. All way through Athens, to hear, three Olympic Games, and he

:22:43.:22:51.

should be very proud of what he has achieved. He has been inspirational.

:22:51.:22:58.

Ryan Cochrane winning the men's 1,500m freestyle. David Davies, if

:22:58.:23:05.

that is his last swim, he has been an inspiration for British swimmers.

:23:05.:23:11.

To watch more swimming, press the red button. We can hear from David

:23:11.:23:21.
:23:21.:23:23.

Coming up in just a moment. David, no one has worked harder

:23:23.:23:28.

than you over the last 12 years. This is such a tough race, isn't

:23:28.:23:37.

it? Yes, I feel like an old man now, the kids have moved it on. I do the

:23:37.:23:42.

hardest events in the programme and I have from we tried a bit too hard

:23:42.:23:49.

over the last four years. I have given everything I had, and to his

:23:49.:23:52.

great to be here. I would love to be in the final but I can on this

:23:52.:23:58.

to say I have given it everything. Tell us about your London

:23:58.:24:02.

experience because you have obviously been to two previously.

:24:02.:24:10.

How does it compare? The biggest factor is the crowd. The venues are

:24:10.:24:16.

brilliant, the villages brilliant. It has been fantastic so far and

:24:16.:24:20.

hopefully we will have more medals. What does the future hold for David

:24:21.:24:25.

Davies now? I think that is probably my last race. I would like

:24:26.:24:31.

to have gone out on a better note, but this is my third Olympics. If

:24:31.:24:36.

someone had said to me when I was a boy you will win two Olympic medals

:24:36.:24:44.

and a Commonwealth medals, I would have been very pleased. Whether I

:24:44.:24:50.

carried on is another thing. have a lot of fans in here who are

:24:50.:24:56.

very proud of you, so well done. These swimmers have been so

:24:56.:25:01.

incredibly articulate in these interviews, one after another.

:25:01.:25:06.

get straight out the pool, amazing. They have really risen to the

:25:06.:25:11.

occasion. There has been drama at the archery, and a fantastic

:25:11.:25:15.
