Hello, welcome to the Queen's Club and the 2014 Aegon Championships, as

:00:30.:00:36.

the grasscourt tennis season gets underway. 12 months ago, Andy Murray

:00:37.:00:41.

made sure he is -- his name was written on this board for a third

:00:42.:00:45.

time. After a third title that was the foundation for even greater

:00:46.:00:46.

glory. That is just a brilliantly worked

:00:47.:00:58.

point from Murray. That was a beautiful shot.

:00:59.:01:06.

That is a tidy game. That is it, third title at Queen's

:01:07.:01:07.

Club for Andy Murray. A couple more seconds before the

:01:08.:01:22.

drama unfolds. He is a brick wall! This is

:01:23.:01:29.

magnificent. Murray has the answer for

:01:30.:01:35.

everything. Just fabulous tennis. What point. What an afternoon,

:01:36.:01:39.

history in the making. Novak Djokovic is the heat.

:01:40.:01:45.

The waiting is over. Andy Murray is the Wimbledon champion! And you

:01:46.:01:48.

simply cannot give more. And if Andy is to win his fourth

:01:49.:01:57.

Queen's Club title to match the achievements of John McEnroe, Boris

:01:58.:02:01.

Becker, waiting you it, he will have to get past a top-class field.

:02:02.:02:07.

-- Leyton Hewitt. Stan Wawrinka is the top seed. The

:02:08.:02:11.

loser in the first round at the French Open, the Swiss number one

:02:12.:02:16.

wants plenty of grasscourt practice ahead of Wimbledon so accepted a

:02:17.:02:22.

wildcard to play here. Thomas Burdick, quarterfinalist last

:02:23.:02:26.

year and the 2010 Wimbledon Romberg -- runner-up.

:02:27.:02:29.

He will be a tough opponent for anyone.

:02:30.:02:32.

Ernests Gulbis is run to the semifinals of the French Open,

:02:33.:02:35.

including beating Roger Federer, and secured himself a place in the

:02:36.:02:38.

world's top ten. Will this month be the time we get

:02:39.:02:43.

to see the fiery Latvian realise his potential on grass?

:02:44.:02:47.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is another without the title to match his

:02:48.:02:49.

talent. He reached the final year in 2011.

:02:50.:02:54.

Can the Frenchman make the final step up to me -- become the

:02:55.:02:58.

champion? Winner two years ago, Marin Cilic

:02:59.:03:02.

has had a tough time in the past 12 months.

:03:03.:03:06.

Banned for drugs, but now back on tour, the lanky Croat will be trying

:03:07.:03:13.

to reclaim his crown. Grigor Dimitrov certainly made an

:03:14.:03:16.

impact on and off the court last year. Now to 13 in the world, can

:03:17.:03:22.

the Bulgarian break into the world's elite?

:03:23.:03:24.

And Lleyton Hewitt is at the other end of his tennis career, but is

:03:25.:03:28.

back for another crack at this title. And after rolling back the

:03:29.:03:32.

years 12 months ago he will be looking for another impressive run

:03:33.:03:37.

this week. A glorious line-up, and glorious

:03:38.:03:41.

weather to greet the opening day of the Championships here at the

:03:42.:03:45.

Queen's Club in Barons Court, West London. Plenty for the crowd to

:03:46.:03:49.

enjoy, let's hope the weather will last.

:03:50.:03:52.

On Centre Court today, the top seeds all have a chance, but first up it

:03:53.:03:57.

is James Ward, wildcard into the Championships, up against the

:03:58.:04:00.

Slovenian GB in the third round of the French qualifying.

:04:01.:04:05.

Then 33-year-old Jurgen Melzer, making his first appearance at

:04:06.:04:08.

Queen's for six years come up against another wildcard from

:04:09.:04:13.

Britain, Dan Evans. Another 33 old, Lleyton Hewitt, the

:04:14.:04:21.

four-time champion will take on Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Then Feliciano

:04:22.:04:24.

Lopez, the 10th seed completes the line-up on Centre Court today.

:04:25.:04:30.

You can watch on the red button from 12:30pm, or you can watch with us at

:04:31.:04:35.

1pm on BBC Two. This is the start of four weeks of

:04:36.:04:40.

tennis here, Queen's, Eastbourne and Wimbledon over 200 hours of coverage

:04:41.:04:45.

across BBC television alongside BBC Radio 5 Live and the excellent BBC

:04:46.:04:49.

Sport website. I am joined by the excellent John

:04:50.:04:55.

Lloyd and Andrew Castle. The grasscourt season is underway,

:04:56.:04:58.

what a glorious start. Yes, we are getting away with it

:04:59.:05:03.

today. The weather forecast is good, I think, most of the week, scattered

:05:04.:05:07.

showers. Maybe showers today and tomorrow but

:05:08.:05:10.

then better and better. Very warm conditions for the players, but that

:05:11.:05:14.

is perfect because last year was quite rainy and very slippery, and

:05:15.:05:18.

that is not ideal. No, we had all of those slips in the

:05:19.:05:23.

first few days, a bit dangerous, to be honest, at times. Now it is

:05:24.:05:28.

perfectly dry and hot conditions. This is perfect.

:05:29.:05:31.

The best of three sets, perfect preparation week.

:05:32.:05:35.

What a great line-up, too. The line-up is great, everyone wants

:05:36.:05:40.

to see Andy Murray, he has not lost on a grasscourt since 2012.

:05:41.:05:45.

He will be up on Wednesday, Stan Wawrinka, at the top of the draw, he

:05:46.:05:48.

has a nightmarish Rosso we will see how long he is in for.

:05:49.:05:51.

The tournament itself is all about getting a couple of hours on court

:05:52.:05:56.

for the guys. -- nightmarish draw.

:05:57.:06:00.

They have so little time between here and Wimbledon, it is a two-week

:06:01.:06:04.

grasscourt season then it is the third Grand Slam of the year.

:06:05.:06:06.

Every match is important, nothing to do with prize money, this is a

:06:07.:06:10.

stand-alone and very important week in the calendar, a tournament they

:06:11.:06:15.

love playing. Plenty to look forward to this week,

:06:16.:06:18.

but what a French Open we had. The final yesterday, history made, what

:06:19.:06:23.

an incredible record Rafael Nadal has.

:06:24.:06:26.

I must say, I thought that Novak Djokovic was going to be the title

:06:27.:06:31.

taker at the beginning. Then it came to the final and you realise that

:06:32.:06:35.

best-of-3 set tournament are so different than best of five.

:06:36.:06:39.

He loses occasionally in best-of-3 tournament, but best of five on

:06:40.:06:43.

clay, you could see Novak Djokovic looking at Boris Becker and it was

:06:44.:06:47.

like, what else can I do? The physicality of him, you cannot

:06:48.:06:50.

wear them down. As soon as the temperature went up

:06:51.:06:55.

or 29 on court, you just knew the top-spin was going to take effect.

:06:56.:07:00.

It is this conditions. This guy, Novak Djokovic, beat everyone else

:07:01.:07:05.

but cannot beat Rafael Nadal. And in Grand Slam finals coming year

:07:06.:07:09.

struggled before, the fifth one he has lost?

:07:10.:07:15.

The fifth in the last six. He was already a legend, for me.

:07:16.:07:19.

Technically I think he is as sound as everyone, but that was

:07:20.:07:24.

heartbreaking, and that idiot that called out between first and second

:07:25.:07:28.

serve lest a bad taste for a few minutes. He was gentleman enough not

:07:29.:07:34.

to suggest he would lose the match because of that, but the drama, the

:07:35.:07:37.

sheer level between these two committees frightening.

:07:38.:07:40.

The fact that Andy Murray has got in and won slams, this is an amazing

:07:41.:07:45.

generation. Last summer this was Murray's

:07:46.:07:52.

service, he won the title here then ended the 77 year wait for a men's

:07:53.:07:56.

Wimbledon champion, but after that it went horribly wrong.

:07:57.:08:00.

He had back surgery and split with his coach, Ivan Lendl, and just

:08:01.:08:05.

yesterday announced he will be working with Amelie Mauresmo for at

:08:06.:08:10.

least the grasscourt season. Andy, welcome back to the Queen's

:08:11.:08:15.

Club. The site of three titles year, including last year.

:08:16.:08:19.

Yes, it is always a nice place for me to come back to. I have some

:08:20.:08:25.

great memories from here. It is perfect preparation for Wimbledon,

:08:26.:08:30.

and I have actually played some of my best tennis here, one of my most

:08:31.:08:33.

consistent tournament 's throughout my career. It is also the place

:08:34.:08:41.

where I won my first ATP match. We have been waiting for a while to

:08:42.:08:44.

find out who your coaching choice would be after parting ways with

:08:45.:08:48.

Ivan Lendl. We now know it is Amelie Mauresmo, how did that come about?

:08:49.:08:50.

Mauresmo, how did that come The last times I have looked at

:08:51.:08:55.

cultures, I spoke to Darren Cave or quite a lot. I mentioned to him

:08:56.:09:01.

quite -- that I was thinking about possibly a female coach. I did not

:09:02.:09:08.

know a lot of the females that were playing around the last ten years --

:09:09.:09:15.

ten years or so. I know Kim Clijsters, obviously, Amelie

:09:16.:09:21.

Mauresmo a bit, so I just spoke to him a little bit about those players

:09:22.:09:26.

and he thought that Amelie would be a good fit. We also came up with a

:09:27.:09:31.

few other names, as well. Yes, after I spoke to her, I just had a good

:09:32.:09:36.

feeling about it. For me it doesn't feel so different, because when I

:09:37.:09:41.

was growing up obviously I had my mum working with me. I have always

:09:42.:09:48.

had quite strong female influences in my career. I have found that,

:09:49.:09:54.

with my mum especially, that she listened extremely well, and that is

:09:55.:10:00.

something that I felt right now that I needed. I have started to listen

:10:01.:10:05.

to my body a lot more, because over the years you start to pick up some

:10:06.:10:09.

things and I think it is important that the people you worked with

:10:10.:10:12.

respect and understand that and listen to how you are feeling, as

:10:13.:10:17.

well, because you cannot just be pushed extremely hard every single

:10:18.:10:20.

day. I need to pick my moments during the year when I really go for

:10:21.:10:24.

it and train. That was one of the reasons, but for me it did not feel

:10:25.:10:32.

like a strange thing to do, just because I grew up with a female

:10:33.:10:38.

coach. What has the reaction been like at Queen's?

:10:39.:10:40.

Have you spoken to the other players at all?

:10:41.:10:43.

Yes, couple of people have come up to me and asked, because in the last

:10:44.:10:48.

few weeks there have been a lot of different... You know, a lot of

:10:49.:10:51.

different names of people, they did not know if it was true, or if it

:10:52.:10:55.

was serious, so people were asking me if it was true or not.

:10:56.:11:03.

Yes, I told them it was. But from the other players' point of view, I

:11:04.:11:06.

don't really care whether they think it is a good or bad appointment, it

:11:07.:11:11.

is whether it works well for me and my team. Hopefully it will be a good

:11:12.:11:16.

move in my career. She has obviously been a Wimbledon champion.

:11:17.:11:19.

What do you hope she will bring in the next few weeks? There are a lot

:11:20.:11:22.

of things she can bring. I would not have thought it would be

:11:23.:11:26.

incredibly full on, because we are still getting to know each other.

:11:27.:11:31.

She obviously knows what it is like to play at our home slam, being

:11:32.:11:35.

French, she has played the French Open a lot of times, and I think she

:11:36.:11:38.

was quite open that she was struggling with the pressure. I

:11:39.:11:42.

think that can also help, someone that has been through those

:11:43.:11:47.

experiences themselves. She has won Wimbledon before herself and it will

:11:48.:11:50.

be interesting. Well, you know that Wimbledon is

:11:51.:11:54.

just a few weeks away, is it pretty exciting?

:11:55.:11:58.

Yes, it is very exciting. It is a period of the year I always look

:11:59.:12:01.

forward to, and I am not just saying this, but literally all of the

:12:02.:12:05.

players when they come on the grass everyone seems to be happy. Towards

:12:06.:12:09.

the end of the clay-court season everyone seems a bit tired and down,

:12:10.:12:14.

mentally fatigued, but when you see everyone on the grass everyone is

:12:15.:12:18.

smiling, everyone is happy, the sun is out just now, and it is a great

:12:19.:12:23.

period of the year, I just wish it was a bit longer.

:12:24.:12:27.

We are all very happy to be back and happy that the sun is still shining

:12:28.:12:31.

today. An interesting choice. Murray never does anything straightforward,

:12:32.:12:36.

does he? Ivan Lendl had never coached before and it worked. He is

:12:37.:12:39.

one of those players that he would not have taken this on without

:12:40.:12:43.

looking at what she could bring. Yes, he said he talked to Darren

:12:44.:12:48.

Cave hell about it, who he has a lot of respect for. -- Cahill.

:12:49.:12:57.

It will be the mental side, that is what Ivan Lendl brought to the

:12:58.:13:02.

table. The mental side, and the mental side, Andy cutting out some

:13:03.:13:05.

of those bits on the court where he would get angry with everyone and

:13:06.:13:08.

all that stuff. I think Amelie Mauresmo has been there, she has had

:13:09.:13:12.

the experience, it makes no difference whether you are a court

:13:13.:13:20.

is coach. I am surprised there are not more women's coaches. It went

:13:21.:13:24.

all back to Bobby Riggs with the women's coach. Why not? She is a

:13:25.:13:28.

fabulous creature, you know. She has been through a lot. At the

:13:29.:13:33.

age of 19 she declared, in her own way, she said at the time it was

:13:34.:13:39.

clumsy, her sexuality, she had to deal with that with her family. She

:13:40.:13:43.

had to deal with that in France and it was a big surprise and everything

:13:44.:13:47.

else, but of course times change, it means nothing, it meant nothing then

:13:48.:13:53.

because it is who you are, but she had to deal with that. Since then

:13:54.:13:56.

she went to number one in the world and won two slams. The way she did

:13:57.:14:02.

it was with this flair and expression. She found a way to win

:14:03.:14:07.

and, for me, I think Murray has an awful lot of that in him. He finds a

:14:08.:14:12.

way to win and looks to unlock an opponent. Andy has more game than

:14:13.:14:17.

anyone playing, for me, in terms of the way he can change things around

:14:18.:14:21.

at get under people's skin. But if this is only for the grasscourt

:14:22.:14:25.

season, I hope he wins a few matches because it could be over in two

:14:26.:14:29.

weeks. It is this week, next week and then Wimbledon he is first on

:14:30.:14:35.

Centre Court. It could be the shortest coaching relationship of

:14:36.:14:37.

all time. In the grasscourt season you go,

:14:38.:14:42.

what do you want me to achieve? I won Queen's last year and Wimbledon,

:14:43.:14:46.

so basically the same? I have not lost since 2012, good

:14:47.:14:51.

luck. It is exciting, you can top about it

:14:52.:14:54.

all day long and it is typical of Andy come it is very interesting.

:14:55.:14:58.

We have heard from Andy, let's hear from Amelie and she explained how

:14:59.:15:02.

this appointment came about. Andy contacted me a few weeks ago

:15:03.:15:07.

and we started talking about this possibility to be working together.

:15:08.:15:14.

It is not really something that I was thinking of doing when I stopped

:15:15.:15:23.

being a tennis player. And then we talked again a little bit more about

:15:24.:15:27.

how to do the things, maybe, about his game, about different things,

:15:28.:15:35.

and we came up with the wolves from both sides -- with the will from

:15:36.:15:41.

both sides to give it a shot. It will be a tough start, the rumours

:15:42.:15:44.

were circling in Paris because she was spotted watching his opening

:15:45.:15:47.

match. But that match he had, the semifinal

:15:48.:15:52.

where he was destroyed by Rafael Nadal, it will be tough for him to

:15:53.:15:57.

try and pick up from that. I think they will look at the

:15:58.:16:01.

positive side. Was there one? Well, he got to the

:16:02.:16:05.

semifinals at the French Open. He had gone in there one? Well, he got

:16:06.:16:08.

to the semifinals at the French Open. He had gone in their unsure

:16:09.:16:10.

about his form, and he got demolished by the greatest player of

:16:11.:16:13.

all-time. He did not play well, apart from Rafael Nadal, he looked

:16:14.:16:16.

physically and mentally like it was just one match to many, he looked

:16:17.:16:20.

tired. I think he will be positive, the grass is coming up now got to

:16:21.:16:25.

the semifinals and has plenty of matches under his belt.

:16:26.:16:28.

We have plenty of time to talk about this this and we will revisit this

:16:29.:16:32.

subject but we will head straight out to Centre Court now, because

:16:33.:16:37.

James Ward will be coming out. He is serving to stay in this opening set

:16:38.:16:43.

against Blaz Rola of Slovenia. He beat him in three sets in the French

:16:44.:16:47.

Open qualifying, but he is in a battle here. Let's join this one and

:16:48.:16:51.

in the commentary box for this one is Peter Fleming and Andrew Cotter.

:16:52.:16:56.

Good matches so far, close match. A strange match, really, Blaz Rola

:16:57.:17:03.

looked all at sea in his opening service game. He found his feet, he

:17:04.:17:15.

found his grass paws and has looked pretty impressive. But James Ward is

:17:16.:17:21.

hanging in this set. James Waters serving, 4-5. -- James

:17:22.:17:28.

Ward. Yes, really thus far it has been

:17:29.:17:33.

James Ward's experience, I think, of certainly playing on a grass court

:17:34.:17:40.

against the power and aggression of Rola.

:17:41.:17:52.

It perhaps was not a bad idea, but the execution was woeful.

:17:53.:18:08.

Very nicely done. And I believe that is the first time

:18:09.:18:19.

James Ward has served and volleyed today, we have seen it a few times

:18:20.:18:25.

today from Rola. Slicing it out wide, forcing the one-handed return,

:18:26.:18:27.

then a nicely played angled volley. There have been a couple of those

:18:28.:18:39.

from Ward. That'll do, a PC one down the

:18:40.:19:06.

middle. -- a speedy one down the middle.

:19:07.:19:11.

The speed gun -- I am not sure if the speed gun is absolutely on the

:19:12.:19:17.

money so far. 134 mph. It is impressive if it is!

:19:18.:20:21.

Ward holds a couple of big serves to see him safely home in that service

:20:22.:20:28.

game. Yes, you will look back on that game

:20:29.:20:35.

with fondness. Those were two great service to finish things off.

:20:36.:20:42.

A reminder of James Ward's pedigree, this is his seventh appearance in

:20:43.:20:47.

this Championships. He has five first-round exits but one glorious

:20:48.:20:50.

run to the semifinal in 2011, when he lost eventually to Jo-Wilfried

:20:51.:20:52.

Tsonga. There it is, you see? The pristine

:20:53.:21:04.

surface, but it can make you scramble around as if on ice.

:21:05.:21:11.

Yes, and I'm not sure if Rola's split step was that efficient. It

:21:12.:21:16.

looked as though he was just running in attempting to change directions,

:21:17.:21:17.

and that is not easy. You can see the marks being left by

:21:18.:21:32.

both players, some of them stretching out by a good few feet.

:21:33.:21:34.

It is slippery out there. Well, Ward thought that ball was

:21:35.:21:48.

perhaps long, but the lineswoman disagreed.

:21:49.:21:52.

Confirmation from the umpire. He did it all welcome except for the

:21:53.:23:11.

final piece of the jigsaw. -- he did it all well, except for.

:23:12.:23:17.

Yes, years not afraid to give it a rip, is he?

:23:18.:23:22.

Now Rola is going to have to fight hard on his serve.

:23:23.:24:06.

sometimes. That can be costly, and James Ward has his first chance.

:24:07.:24:12.

James Ward, not their, in any case. -- not there.

:24:13.:24:35.

Timely first serve from the Slovenian. And nice to see just a

:24:36.:24:39.

bit of touch, a bit of calm thought. him off.

:24:40.:25:37.

This was an inpatient attempt to approach. He was not even inside the

:25:38.:25:44.

baseline when he hit the backhand. He gave James Ward all sorts of time

:25:45.:25:45.

to line that one up. there it is, this time Ward has the

:25:46.:26:12.

breakthrough, so close now to this first set.

:26:13.:26:31.

Yes, nicely played by James Ward. An extraordinary service game, really,

:26:32.:26:39.

from Rola. He was up 40-15, appeared to be cruising, then was in control

:26:40.:26:43.

of that point, missed the backhand, overhit it, missed it by ripping it

:26:44.:26:51.

only an inch long, but did not need to be nearly as precise, then made

:26:52.:26:55.

another couple of errors and Ward was in the battle.

:26:56.:26:59.

Well, even though it is a different surface, of course, you can see why

:27:00.:27:04.

these two Michael had that epic struggle in the qualifiers for the

:27:05.:27:07.

French Open. Very evenly matched.

:27:08.:27:12.

-- you can see why these two. James Ward has plenty of support

:27:13.:27:16.

here, the majority of the crowd, and from those closer to him, Leon Smith

:27:17.:27:21.

watching on, the British Davis Cup captain. He is nearest to as --

:27:22.:27:32.

nearest to us. Sensibly applying lots of sun cream,

:27:33.:27:36.

with his Scottish skin. Yes, porcelain like!

:27:37.:27:41.

It is a nice day, even the threat of some rain later on, we are told, but

:27:42.:27:45.

James Ward in a good position. He will be a very happy man.

:27:46.:28:54.

He will just have to wait a little bit longer.

:28:55.:29:33.

And there is the rower from James Ward, the applause from the crowd,

:29:34.:29:39.

and the British number three has taken the first set, 7-5.

:29:40.:29:54.

COMMENTATOR: First set to James, 7-5, continuing his impressive form

:29:55.:30:03.

in Paris. A great line up here at the Queen's

:30:04.:30:06.

Club and you can have your say of who you think will win this year's

:30:07.:30:09.

title. You can vote for any of the names coming up on screen through

the BBC Sport website or using the relative hash tag.

:30:15.:30:17.

The terms and conditions are on the BBC Sport website.

:30:18.:30:21.

Make your choice and the vote will close at two o'clock this afternoon,

:30:22.:30:25.

when we will bring you the results later.

:30:26.:30:26.

There will win this tournament? But let's go back to see who will

:30:27.:30:34.

win this match. COMMENTATOR: Hash tight knot

:30:35.:30:37.

Fleming. Do you tweet? Do you know Twitter?

:30:38.:30:45.

I am a Facebook kind of guy. James Ward, he started so well,

:30:46.:30:49.

rather his opponent started poorly, but then you would have thought it

:30:50.:30:52.

was the Slovenian who was looking stronger in that set, until the very

:30:53.:30:56.

end. Yes,

:30:57.:30:56.

stronger in that set, until the very end.

:30:57.:30:58.

Yes, this match has plenty more to go. It was pretty interesting, I

:30:59.:31:03.

think. Rola's corner will be disappointed with his shot selection

:31:04.:31:08.

in the last couple of games. He just missed balls because he overhit

:31:09.:31:12.

them. It is almost like his mindset is, I am hopeless if I don't hit a

:31:13.:31:18.

winner can find not being -- if I don't have a winner, if I'm not

:31:19.:31:25.

being aggressive. Ward is calmly slicing the ball back deep and

:31:26.:31:31.

allowing Rola to hit himself out. We top about James Ward being

:31:32.:31:34.

comfortable in this environment, he had a very good run here three years

:31:35.:31:38.

ago, Diaz loved playing for Great Britain in the big Davis Cup

:31:39.:31:42.

matches, as well, and his opponent, Blaz Rola, yes, he is on the way up,

:31:43.:31:47.

in the top 100, but there still young guy, playing the challengers

:31:48.:31:51.

and has such -- has had some success, but this will be an alien

:31:52.:31:54.

environment for him. It is, I think you are right, Rola

:31:55.:31:59.

has two things against him. He is a career ranking 91, so this

:32:00.:32:03.

is one of the few tournament see it straight in on the main tour, so

:32:04.:32:09.

just to play in front of this big crowd is a new experience, or

:32:10.:32:13.

somewhat newcomer anyway, and of course this being his first match

:32:14.:32:17.

ever, see is coming to grips with, what do I do out here?

:32:18.:32:23.

James Ward will hope that he does not come to grips with it too

:32:24.:32:27.

quickly, because he said I had some weaponry. He will serve to start the

:32:28.:32:33.

second set. -- he certainly has some weaponry.

:32:34.:32:38.

Yes, he has a lot of skills. Good first serve. Solid off of both

:32:39.:32:47.

wings. And he moves well. He puts it together, he is a scary opponent.

:32:48.:33:09.

will play Grigor Dimitrov, the number 4 seed, the Bulgarian, a

:33:10.:33:10.

very, very talented youngster. Beautifully done. Rola not afraid to

:33:11.:33:59.

come into the net, but Ward making a play. Yes, that of course is a very

:34:00.:34:08.

difficult shot on a blustery day like today.

:34:09.:35:04.

Wonderfully done. The longest rally of the match. Blaz Rola undone by

:35:05.:35:14.

Ward's backhand slice. I like that, Ward just... Old school. Very calm.

:35:15.:35:29.

That is almost new school, very few players will relax and just go with

:35:30.:35:31.

the flow. But despite Ward's best efforts,

:35:32.:35:43.

Blaz Rola holds. Yes, so little between these 2. We talked about

:35:44.:35:48.

James Ward believing he can crack the top 100, but that is some holy

:35:49.:35:53.

Grail in itself. I am sure he would rather go deeper into

:35:54.:35:54.

Grail in itself. I am sure he would rather go deeper tournaments and the

:35:55.:35:57.

rankings will take care of themselves. He is 27 now, he

:35:58.:36:03.

believes that in his late 20s, he can kick on and get inside the top

:36:04.:36:09.

100. 155th at the moment. Yes, and why not? He is certainly as

:36:10.:36:13.

physically fit as he has ever been. As long as your body doesn't give

:36:14.:36:19.

way, with each match you play, you gain a little more experience.

:36:20.:36:30.

And Ian Ward's case, a little more confidence. I think that is the

:36:31.:36:40.

thing that I think is crucial whether he gets into the top 100 --

:36:41.:36:44.

in Ward's case. What I love about the early-season

:36:45.:37:19.

grass courts is you have all sorts of wonderful technology now, you

:37:20.:37:24.

have a heat map that can show you where the players have been, but

:37:25.:37:27.

here you can see it in the scuffs on the court.

:37:28.:37:34.

That had the pace, not quite the touch.

:37:35.:37:43.

Exactly, it wasn't the greatest of drop shots.

:37:44.:38:35.

A sitter. He has had a few of those today, and really failed on most all

:38:36.:38:49.

of them. Yes, perhaps a little drop shot here would have done the trick.

:38:50.:39:05.

A late call, but I think the umpire was pretty certain it was out as

:39:06.:39:17.

well, but we are having a challenge from James Ward. It was a late call,

:39:18.:39:31.

but a good one. And from a position of 40-0, Ward is up against it.

:39:32.:39:47.

That return of serve, just slapped from Rola. Smooth that one back into

:39:48.:39:55.

play, put the pressure on Ward. So eventually, James Ward holds.

:39:56.:40:18.

Just lost his way a little bit in that game, but held his nerve.

:40:19.:40:27.

Yes, really the difference. -- the difference thus far is that Rola has

:40:28.:40:36.

become impatient at inopportune times.

:40:37.:41:17.

That looked like it might be worth a challenge. You have two challenge in

:41:18.:41:25.

a timely fashion, that was just about within the limit. -- you must

:41:26.:41:33.

challenge. Just long enough to look over at his camp! Yes, worth a

:41:34.:41:35.

challenge, but just long. Mr Rola has two challenges

:41:36.:41:46.

remaining. He has got, at times, a very, very

:41:47.:42:00.

gentle touch. He did well bear, had to improvise

:42:01.:42:33.

and get down for that. -- did well bear. That was like John McEnroe,

:42:34.:42:47.

James Ward trying to scrape the one-handed backhand into play. That

:42:48.:42:56.

is a good hold for Rola. Again, so little between these two. Ward with

:42:57.:43:00.

the first set in the bag. We talk about that match they had,

:43:01.:43:14.

but epic tussle, 12-10, in the final set in the French Open. He became

:43:15.:43:18.

the first British man to come through qualifying since... I don't

:43:19.:43:25.

have to tell you who it was. I am not sure if I know anybody who was

:43:26.:43:33.

old enough in 1973? Is it melon head? Is that your nickname for the

:43:34.:43:41.

esteemed John Lloyd? It might be. And then he gave Tommy Robredo,

:43:42.:43:49.

James Ward, gave Tommy Robredo a decent match. Of course, Tommy

:43:50.:43:54.

Robredo, took him to four sets. So he has certainly had his moments,

:43:55.:43:58.

James Ward. I mentioned the Davis Cup and what he has done here as

:43:59.:44:03.

well. He is just on the cusp, he just needs a couple of rounds in a

:44:04.:44:09.

Grand Slam and they really do start to accumulate the ranking points.

:44:10.:44:13.

But also, as you say, more importantly, the confidence. Yes,

:44:14.:44:18.

exactly, you have to get on a roll and perhaps Ward needs to play a few

:44:19.:44:25.

challenges, I mean, he does, he has too, but often you come up here and

:44:26.:44:30.

even though the rankings of the players are higher, the competition

:44:31.:44:38.

is not necessarily any sterner. And as you say, you win a lot more

:44:39.:44:39.

points for each match you win here. Just a bit of misdirection was good

:44:40.:45:48.

enough. Good play by Ward but watch Rola's footwork, doesn't take a

:45:49.:45:52.

split step, just keeps running. We didn't get a good shot of it.

:45:53.:46:03.

It is so crucial to take a split step, on every ball, really.

:46:04.:46:11.

Especially on a slick surface like this, because if you try and run and

:46:12.:46:19.

then grip and change directions, the chances are what happened to Rola

:46:20.:46:22.

there will happen time and again, you lose your footing. No traction,

:46:23.:46:24.

can't change direction. Ward. -- hold. Batman watching his

:46:25.:47:02.

lovely court being shredded -- that man. Yes, once again doing a

:47:03.:47:09.

beautiful job with the court. A beautiful court and a beautiful day.

:47:10.:47:14.

Still on top in the second set. Blaz Rola, from Slovenia. Serving.

:47:15.:48:01.

Then one to the body. Moving along nicely now, Rola.

:48:02.:48:28.

Found a good rhythm, lots of first serves carrying him on.

:48:29.:48:42.

James Ward, I know he wanted to make some real headway in this grass

:48:43.:48:48.

court season. He struggled a bit in Nottingham last week, although he

:48:49.:48:53.

was up against a decent player, the American Steve Johnson. Then he went

:48:54.:48:58.

down to Eastbourne as well to play in the Aegon International down

:48:59.:49:04.

there. The crowd is swelling all the time, a huge stand here behind the

:49:05.:49:13.

players' box, it stretches up. Up to a great height now. Yes, and it is a

:49:14.:49:24.

good order of play. Ward and Dan Evans have both generated quite a

:49:25.:49:30.

bit of interest from their Davis Cup exploits. Lleyton Hewitt, a

:49:31.:49:34.

four-time champion here, always a great draw. So often, the Monday

:49:35.:49:42.

orders of play are less than glamorous, but today it is nice. And

:49:43.:49:49.

if the spectators were here earlier today, they will have seen Andy

:49:50.:49:50.

Murray practising. So we are still on serve in the

:49:51.:50:05.

second set. James Ward with the service.

:50:06.:50:19.

That is where Rola, I think, let himself down a little bit. He

:50:20.:50:26.

doesn't get enough returns of serve into play.

:50:27.:50:37.

But when he does, he can be very good.

:50:38.:51:10.

Just a bit wasteful on the return sometimes.

:51:11.:51:27.

Perfectly placed. Not a lot of power on it.

:51:28.:52:09.

A lazy smash puts it away and James Ward holds. I think it is going to

:52:10.:52:21.

come down to a couple of crucial moments, who hold their nerve, who

:52:22.:52:26.

makes a tiny mistake towards the end of the set. And I think Rola should

:52:27.:52:31.

be thankful that Ward is a bit of a gentleman, because the crew took a

:52:32.:52:35.

couple of steps in. I know a few guys who might have just tagged him.

:52:36.:52:48.

Melon Head would have done it. Of course, it wouldn't have hurt.

:52:49.:53:47.

Yes, very nearly pulled it off. It wasn't an easy shot by any stretch.

:53:48.:54:02.

That is good. For a 136 mph serve... I think you might be

:54:03.:54:19.

right, the radar gun might not be as accurate as some we have seen. Maybe

:54:20.:54:25.

it needs a little fine tuning, because that was a slice serve. 136?

:54:26.:54:28.

I don't think so. That was an overrule.

:54:29.:54:41.

UMPIRE: Mr Rola challenging the call. I am not sure if this was a

:54:42.:54:52.

fault. Comfortably in. That is an ace. James Ward chuntering away, but

:54:53.:54:58.

he can't really complain. So Rola holds and moves on. We

:54:59.:55:22.

talked about him having that college career, which is not long finished.

:55:23.:55:29.

He was the NCAA singles champion last year at Ohio State. You are

:55:30.:55:35.

losing precious years that you could be learning on tour, maybe? Yes and

:55:36.:55:43.

no. There are pluses and minuses. If you go out onto the tour at 18 or

:55:44.:55:47.

19, and you are not really good enough, ranked 300 or 400, you lose

:55:48.:55:54.

a lot on a weekend, week out, and it takes a special kind of guy to work

:55:55.:55:57.

hard and improve and not get frustrated or downhearted. So often,

:55:58.:56:03.

if you go to a university and you have a good coach and a good

:56:04.:56:06.

programme and you get to train as much as the pros do, it is more

:56:07.:56:14.

nurturing environment. And so it often can be a great thing. I know

:56:15.:56:20.

that when I was 18, I could no more think about succeeding as a pro than

:56:21.:56:25.

fly. It was not close. Yet after a couple of years, I had improved

:56:26.:56:30.

enough to where I could compete. So I think it works for a lot of

:56:31.:56:36.

players. Did you have a college career? I did, I went to college for

:56:37.:56:42.

three years. In fact, the very first year, I went to the University of

:56:43.:56:47.

Michigan, Ohio State was our greatest rivals. We will talk more

:56:48.:56:56.

about your college career later. Oh, please.

:56:57.:57:12.

He has missed a lot of those balls. That is the sort of shot that we

:57:13.:57:21.

wouldn't see Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, those guys... They miss a few

:57:22.:57:23.

of them, but not dozens. What are those at the University of

:57:24.:57:49.

Michigan known as? The Wolverines. A little cry of self encouragement

:57:50.:59:00.

punches the air from Ward. He has his hold of serve. Comfortable

:59:01.:59:08.

there, or rather Blaz Rola looked uncomfortable. Too many unforced

:59:09.:59:15.

errors. Yes, it is pretty much a match of the boxer, James Ward, and

:59:16.:59:16.

the puncher, Rola. He is the skilled shotmaker but he

:59:17.:59:27.

is throwing in a few balls like that one, where you just think, huh?

:59:28.:59:40.

A bit ragged now, Rola, but Ward is pressurising him. We mere mortals

:59:41.:59:49.

have hit this serve a few times. You have to give Rola a bit of a break,

:59:50.:59:52.

it is breezy out there. A sense of an opportunity now for

:59:53.:00:02.

James Ward. He is certainly going to challenge

:00:03.:00:50.

that one. Yes, this is a hopeful challenge.

:00:51.:01:02.

Not 1 million miles away, but clear enough.

:01:03.:01:27.

Second serve right on the line, challenge from James Ward.

:01:28.:01:39.

That was clearly on the line, that is why Ward mis-timed the return so

:01:40.:01:44.

badly. Rather desperate challenges here

:01:45.:01:49.

from James Ward. It has got to Siegel-30 and he did not want his

:01:50.:01:55.

momentum faltered. -- it got to zero -30.

:01:56.:02:18.

That is worth a challenge. We are going challenge crazy here!

:02:19.:02:31.

A busy old Hawk-Eye. Right, let's have a look.

:02:32.:02:36.

Good challenge from Rola. And the cry, yes, from Ward, he will

:02:37.:03:14.

have the break point. Furious tactics, really, from the Slovenian.

:03:15.:03:18.

-- curious. Well, there it is, with a double

:03:19.:04:02.

fault, James Ward has the break, and it is just a single game away from a

:04:03.:04:05.

place in the second round. STUDIO: Just one game away from

:04:06.:04:16.

going through to the second round. We did ask you to cast your vote for

:04:17.:04:21.

who you thought might win this Championship.

:04:22.:04:24.

The voting is now closed and we will bring you the result of it at the

:04:25.:04:29.

end of this set or this match, which cover that is. James Ward will be

:04:30.:04:35.

coming out to serve for it in just want.

:04:36.:04:35.

Which ever is. COMMENTATOR: This would be a big

:04:36.:04:48.

result this James Ward can see his way through.

:04:49.:04:51.

Not necessarily in terms of ranking, Blaz Rola just 91st in the world,

:04:52.:04:56.

but that will run in 2011 was the only time in six previous attempts

:04:57.:05:00.

he has been passed the first round, so it would help in terms of ranking

:05:01.:05:04.

points and confidence. Any time you win a match on the main

:05:05.:05:10.

tour when you are ranked 155 is a great day. A real opportunity then

:05:11.:05:13.

to accumulate more points, because the points essentially double with

:05:14.:05:19.

each match you win. And you are not defending anything

:05:20.:05:21.

from last year. It all helps. That was poor shot selection,

:05:22.:06:05.

really, just tipped that one back crosscourt. A little nervous, play

:06:06.:06:10.

the safe shot. Especially under these

:06:11.:06:31.

circumstances, where Rola is just donating bolts left right and

:06:32.:06:37.

centre. -- donating balls. Yes, don't have to do too much, just

:06:38.:06:43.

keep the ball in play and wait for serve ice Rola mistake. -- wait for

:06:44.:06:49.

a serve mistake. If he is going down, Rola, he is

:06:50.:07:14.

going down slugging away. Some powerful ground strokes.

:07:15.:07:37.

He had a chance there, Rola. Yes, he was the beneficiary of the

:07:38.:07:45.

Winter fair, because the returns serve certainly looked as though it

:07:46.:07:48.

was going wide, the wind blew it back into court. -- the beneficiary

:07:49.:07:52.

of the wind. Just a couple of points required to

:07:53.:07:59.

see him home. James Ward looking for a win for the

:08:00.:08:27.

second time in all of his appearances here at Queen's to make

:08:28.:08:30.

it through to the second round. Match point.

:08:31.:08:44.

It is victory for James Ward in front of his hometown crowd. He

:08:45.:08:51.

moves through to the second round, and he does so in straight sets.

:08:52.:08:58.

Yes, a really professional performance from James Ward. He was

:08:59.:09:07.

calm, collected, he chose the right shots and fully deserving of his

:09:08.:09:11.

victory today. That gets us off to a nice start

:09:12.:09:15.

here on Centre Court at the Queen's Club, the first match on this court

:09:16.:09:23.

in this year's Aegon Championships, as the British wild card is through,

:09:24.:09:29.

James Ward come in straights sets, 7-5, 6-4.

:09:30.:09:33.

He moves on to a match with Grigor Dimitrov, the number four seed, who

:09:34.:09:39.

will be a very tall order indeed. The main thing is he is there to

:09:40.:09:44.

have another chance and another day here on Centre Court in front of

:09:45.:09:49.

another big crowd. We have talks about that long run he

:09:50.:09:53.

had to the semifinal three years ago. -- we have talked. Who knows if

:09:54.:10:00.

he can do that again this year, but he certainly has a chance with a

:10:01.:10:05.

victory over top 100 player. And look to the box to his father, who

:10:06.:10:11.

is watching on, and to Leon Smith, the Davis Cup captain. In the Davis

:10:12.:10:16.

Cup he has provided plenty of impressive performances, and another

:10:17.:10:20.

one here today. James Ward safely through to the second round.

:10:21.:10:26.

A straight sets victory in the end, let's see what James Ward thought of

:10:27.:10:32.

it, he is talking now to Andrew Castle.

:10:33.:10:35.

He is talking to me now readies. Good work, a British victory to

:10:36.:10:41.

start our coverage here, congratulations, James.

:10:42.:10:44.

How did that feel? Thank you. Never easy, first match

:10:45.:10:49.

on the grass, playing in front of a home crowd, a bit of added pressure

:10:50.:10:53.

but thank you for the support, it has been unbelievable, and I look

:10:54.:10:57.

forward to hopefully recreating memories of a couple of years ago.

:10:58.:11:00.

Indeed. You seem to play well here, what is

:11:01.:11:05.

it about this court that you like so much?

:11:06.:11:07.

I think it is the best grasscourt it is. I had the privilege to open up

:11:08.:11:12.

the tournament to date that Michael today.

:11:13.:11:18.

-- open up the tournament today. What about your next opponent,

:11:19.:11:21.

Grigor Dimitrov question might have you played him before?

:11:22.:11:26.

Yes, I played him a few years ago, maybe that doesn't count, but we

:11:27.:11:30.

practised recently together, we will see how it goes.

:11:31.:11:35.

Looking over your results over the first six or seven months of this

:11:36.:11:39.

year, it is not easy surviving at the ranking you are yet you are such

:11:40.:11:43.

a quality player. How do you keep going out there, is it days in the

:11:44.:11:47.

sun like this question might yes, of course, there is no better feeling

:11:48.:11:51.

than winning a match here at Queen's, winning at home, these are

:11:52.:11:55.

the times you play for. I will carry on and see where I can

:11:56.:12:00.

get to. Well done, mate, congratulations.

:12:01.:12:01.

Ladies and gentlemen, James Ward. What really separates the great from

:12:02.:12:06.

the good? Style? Of course.

:12:07.:12:15.

Flair? Obviously.

:12:16.:12:18.

Passion? That is a given.

:12:19.:12:26.

Learn from your mistakes. Always think about what you have

:12:27.:12:30.

missed. Never be satisfied with what you

:12:31.:12:33.

have done. Whatever you do, do it with your

:12:34.:12:39.

heart. I never thought about what I could

:12:40.:12:43.

get out of football. I just wanted to play.

:12:44.:12:51.

And the wait is almost over, the build-up to the World Cup continues

:12:52.:12:58.

tomorrow night as Gary Lineker presents a special documentary on

:12:59.:13:02.

the world's fascination with Brazil and the beautiful game, including

:13:03.:13:06.

meeting the legend, Ronaldo. That is 10:35pm tomorrow on BBC1 HD.

:13:07.:13:11.

The World Cup gets underway on Thursday, we will be back on

:13:12.:13:15.

Wednesday night with a full preview of the tournament on BBC1 HD at

:13:16.:13:21.

10:35pm on Wednesday. It is certainly tennis all the way

:13:22.:13:25.

here and James Ward has won his opening match.

:13:26.:13:28.

We asked you to vote on social media for who you thought would win the

:13:29.:13:32.

title here at the Queen's Club in west London.

:13:33.:13:35.

Those were the options and, surprise surprise, Mr Murray has come it on

:13:36.:13:39.

top, 71% of the vote. Stanislas Wawrinka, the top seed,

:13:40.:13:46.

has 11%, and going down to Grigor Dimitrov, 2% of the vote.

:13:47.:13:52.

I am sitting here with John Lloyd...

:13:53.:13:56.

Why is other above Marin Cilic? Anyway, I am here with John Lloyd.

:13:57.:14:02.

Looking at that obviously Murray is the big favourite having won it two

:14:03.:14:05.

or three times before, but outside of that who are the main

:14:06.:14:09.

contenders? I think Stan Wawrinka, obviously, we

:14:10.:14:14.

have seen what he can do and he is a good grasscourt player. He needs

:14:15.:14:18.

this tournament, big-time, because of his dismal showing in the French

:14:19.:14:22.

Open. He needs matches but he has the toughest draw by far coming

:14:23.:14:27.

year. He could play Marcos Baghdatis in the second round and that is not

:14:28.:14:32.

easy. I like the look of Grigor Dimitrov. That was amazing title run

:14:33.:14:37.

he had there. I like the look of Grigor Dimitrov, he is another one

:14:38.:14:41.

that needs matches because he lost in the first round of the French

:14:42.:14:45.

Open and he is in desperate need. He is a very good grasscourt player. I

:14:46.:14:49.

think Grigor Dimitrov may be the sneaky one, if you look beyond the

:14:50.:14:56.

top two. He has a great game can everyone is

:14:57.:14:59.

talking about him as the future of men's tennis.

:15:00.:15:05.

The little girls that were following him, they absolutely loved him, he

:15:06.:15:13.

got the number one vote in the all girls' department.

:15:14.:15:16.

A great talent, isn't he? He is, he is one of those guys that

:15:17.:15:20.

adapts well to the service because it is not easy to play on,

:15:21.:15:23.

especially when it is as slippery as it is today. He may be one of the

:15:24.:15:30.

top favourites, he may be second favourite, actually, for me, behind

:15:31.:15:34.

Andy. I think Marin Cilic, of course, former champion here, also a

:15:35.:15:38.

danger. And Thomas Burdick, as well. --

:15:39.:15:44.

Tomas Berdych. I think so much depends on home

:15:45.:15:50.

comfortable you are moving on this surface. I think Marin Cilic seems

:15:51.:15:56.

to do it very well. Tomas Berdych, less comfortable on this surface,

:15:57.:16:00.

and I think Stan Wawrinka, less comfortable than years on other

:16:01.:16:03.

surfaces. Although, at Wimbledon...

:16:04.:16:12.

Yes... That is fair to say, you did OK that year.

:16:13.:16:14.

What about the big talking point in France, Ernests Gulbis? What can we

:16:15.:16:19.

expect from him? He is so unpredictable, that is why

:16:20.:16:22.

I like watching him, universal but he is going to do, he doesn't know

:16:23.:16:27.

what he is going to do. He has the strangest forehand, and what a

:16:28.:16:31.

weapon it is. He has a great dramatic backhand, to come he dines

:16:32.:16:35.

around the place and is not afraid of anyone. He kept Roger Federer

:16:36.:16:39.

waiting, did not care about that. He did not have great things to say

:16:40.:16:43.

about Novak Djokovic, he grew up with demand was that the same

:16:44.:16:46.

academy as him. He got in trouble about what he said

:16:47.:16:51.

about the women, he said they should stay at home rather than being on

:16:52.:16:55.

the circuit. I'm looking forward to seeing him play, because he is

:16:56.:16:58.

dangerous. And he has also broken into the top ten for the first time.

:16:59.:17:03.

He is riding high, very confident and has a great serve and terrific

:17:04.:17:07.

backhand. Again, there is one of those guys you have to just wait and

:17:08.:17:12.

see. How well will hear just to playing on this surface? I think

:17:13.:17:15.

this year is a great year for Ernests Gulbis thinking, I do have a

:17:16.:17:21.

chance. In so many previous years I think we have seen him come in

:17:22.:17:24.

thinking, I am not playing very well, if it does not happen it

:17:25.:17:30.

doesn't happen, and he almost woks through the month on grass and

:17:31.:17:33.

hasn't really put in the best effort. -- the almost what this...

:17:34.:17:42.

-- waltzes through. His attitude seems to be so much

:17:43.:17:45.

better. These are some of the new names, what about the golden oldies

:17:46.:17:49.

version Mike Lleyton Hewitt did amazingly well last year.

:17:50.:17:55.

-- what about the golden oldies? Lleyton Hewitt did amazingly well

:17:56.:17:59.

last year and looking for a fifth title?

:18:00.:18:04.

He is amazing, he is one of those players that he gives 110% every

:18:05.:18:08.

time he plays, and this is the best surface for him now to have a chance

:18:09.:18:12.

to go deep into the tournament, grand slam or any other, because on

:18:13.:18:17.

grass he knows how to move, he can get quick points comedy is

:18:18.:18:20.

physically better for him. He could have run here. He is good on grass.

:18:21.:18:28.

Looking back briefly to James Ward, I was looking at some of the

:18:29.:18:30.

statistics, he played seven tournament this year and won less

:18:31.:18:35.

than ?5,000 because it is the Challenger circuit.

:18:36.:18:37.

He played before the French Open in Germany and reached the second round

:18:38.:18:44.

and won ?485 prize money. You are trying to travel, pay for

:18:45.:18:49.

your Hotel and keeper coach going, that match to qualify for the French

:18:50.:18:51.

Open was huge. He is living on the fringes of what

:18:52.:18:57.

is a very rich to. -- very rich tour.

:18:58.:19:02.

Yes, I think that is something the tourist trying to address. When the

:19:03.:19:10.

prize-money breakdowns were first brought up, they thought 150 players

:19:11.:19:14.

should be able to make a living. That is still not the case and when

:19:15.:19:17.

you consider how much more money is in the game now than there used to

:19:18.:19:22.

be. I mean, when you watch the qualifying of these tenements and

:19:23.:19:25.

when you see a guy ranked 200 against a guy ranked 300 and they

:19:26.:19:28.

are really awesome players, they are great, and the only difference

:19:29.:19:34.

between a guy ranked 200 and guy ranked 20 or 50, is just that the

:19:35.:19:39.

guy ranked 50 has won a few more matches, you understand what it

:19:40.:19:41.

takes to win and has more confidence. But the tour should be

:19:42.:19:49.

able to support more guys who can afford to go out and play

:19:50.:19:53.

full-time. All credit to James Ward, at age 27, to still keep on going

:19:54.:19:56.

and think, I am going to break through, I can do it.

:19:57.:20:01.

It is something the tour has to look at.

:20:02.:20:05.

Yes, it is and we will see the headlines when we come to Wimbledon

:20:06.:20:08.

if we see a British player losing in the first round, one of the things

:20:09.:20:14.

they always talk about is whatever prize-money V2 corn, but what they

:20:15.:20:19.

don't get is they have earned $7,000 in the first four months of the

:20:20.:20:21.

year. I am sure we will talk more about

:20:22.:20:25.

that through the week, but next is another Brit, the wild card Dan

:20:26.:20:28.

Evans. Dan, welcome back to the Queen's

:20:29.:20:31.

Club, somewhere you have good memories of from last year?

:20:32.:20:36.

Yes, last year was a very good year, made this the third round had very

:20:37.:20:43.

good matches and it set me up for the rest of the year. It was one of

:20:44.:20:46.

the platforms, wasn't it? In the summer you went on and had a

:20:47.:20:51.

great run in the Challengers below the main circuit and that led to the

:20:52.:20:54.

U.S. Open. What are your memories of that time?

:20:55.:21:01.

I got my game together out in America, on the hard courts, lost in

:21:02.:21:05.

the first round in Lexington, got some good training and went on and

:21:06.:21:12.

played to finals. It just went on from there, really.

:21:13.:21:17.

Then the third round in the U.S. Open and before I knew it I was

:21:18.:21:21.

playing really good, and it all just came together. What was that like?

:21:22.:21:28.

You're obviously playing in the wrong below the main circuit, you

:21:29.:21:31.

have played some qualifiers and had some success, but it must give you a

:21:32.:21:35.

heck of a taste for what life could be like, because you are just

:21:36.:21:39.

outside that top 100 and if you get inside it life changes.

:21:40.:21:44.

Yes, at the time I don't really know what is happening, I am just day by

:21:45.:21:48.

day playing the matches, and the more I look back I think it was a

:21:49.:21:52.

pretty good effort what I did. Definitely being in the top 100 live

:21:53.:22:00.

could change quite a bit, and that is why I am here this week, to get

:22:01.:22:04.

some more points and push towards the top 100.

:22:05.:22:07.

It is probably a maturing process, isn't it? As a tennis player and a

:22:08.:22:12.

person that you have gone through? Because I don't think you have

:22:13.:22:15.

always known hopes Ackley how much you want it -- I don't think you

:22:16.:22:20.

have always known exactly how much you want it until the last year, is

:22:21.:22:24.

that true? Yes, tennis and what it takes to get

:22:25.:22:31.

into the top 100, definitely being a little older than playing more of

:22:32.:22:37.

these events with the better guys around does definitely give you more

:22:38.:22:42.

of a taste of what it takes to get up there with those guys.

:22:43.:22:45.

I suppose hanging around with Andy Murray, as well, you're going to

:22:46.:22:50.

learn a lot. He seems to be in your corner, as well, there seems to be

:22:51.:22:55.

quite a lot of support from him. Yes, you do support me quite a lot

:22:56.:23:01.

-- he does support me, and that is something that is priceless, having

:23:02.:23:07.

him to ask a few questions. There are not many people around who have

:23:08.:23:10.

won Wimbledon and who are supporting me. That sort of thing is great, but

:23:11.:23:16.

ultimately it comes down to me having to win the matches, so that

:23:17.:23:23.

is what I need to do. Get the matches won and get the points in

:23:24.:23:28.

the bag. Well, big chance also hear today for Dan Evans to get some of

:23:29.:23:34.

those ranking points, get some of the prize-money here, a wild card in

:23:35.:23:36.

the Queen's Club. But there is a bit of a delay,

:23:37.:23:39.

because the umpire is having a bit of trouble with the chair.

:23:40.:23:48.

What is he asking for? I see...

:23:49.:23:55.

It is like the table is not quite where he wants it. Makeshift table,

:23:56.:23:59.

perfect! That is not going to work, he is not happy.

:24:00.:24:05.

Day one and I am afraid we have had a malfunction on Centre Court, and

:24:06.:24:09.

the umpire is not happy. The players are just seated at the moment and

:24:10.:24:15.

we're waiting for play, which is not ideal is it?

:24:16.:24:19.

No, especially Dan Evans, who I would have thought would be a bit

:24:20.:24:24.

nervous now, about to play his first match. This is the second most

:24:25.:24:27.

important tournament, probably, he will play this year. Emotionally, he

:24:28.:24:37.

wants to get out and get it on. Ross Hutchins, it is his first year

:24:38.:24:40.

here as tournament director and already a bit of a problem. I just

:24:41.:24:44.

wonder if Chris Kermode is going up there as former tournament director

:24:45.:24:48.

saying, this never happened when I was in charge!

:24:49.:24:54.

The umpire does not look ready. But, finally...

:24:55.:24:59.

The chair is going up, the table is set, and it looks like we could be

:25:00.:25:04.

in for the start. We are ready to go, Peter, thank you very much.

:25:05.:25:07.

Let's hope we will have no more trouble. Let's join our

:25:08.:25:12.

commentators, John and Andrew. Thank you very much indeed.

:25:13.:25:23.

Dan Evans is at our end. He will serve first.

:25:24.:26:12.

It looks like he has got a bit of beef on that south since we last saw

:26:13.:26:16.

him play. -- on that serve. That will do nicely, Evans opened

:26:17.:26:48.

his account. A tidy start. When you were Davis Cup captain, did you pick

:26:49.:26:53.

him, dropping? Fire him? No, I picked him a lot. He was

:26:54.:26:59.

pretty young when he got in the team, but he deserved his spot. But

:27:00.:27:03.

he was unlucky in some ways. He played a couple of fifth rubber

:27:04.:27:09.

there against players that were better than him at the time and lost

:27:10.:27:13.

a couple of them and I think it affected him for a while. It is a

:27:14.:27:17.

tough thing to go to a Davis Cup match and play the fifth rubber and

:27:18.:27:20.

lose. He was a very talented player, down, it is just the mental side he

:27:21.:27:25.

seems to have improved so much in in the last three -- in the last year

:27:26.:27:27.

or so. 33 years old, Jurgen Melzer. Next

:27:28.:28:06.

top ten, he was number eight once upon a time.

:28:07.:28:11.

Top ten in singles and doubles, this is a quality player from Austria.

:28:12.:28:18.

And he won Junior Wimbledon back in 1999, as well. So he knows his way

:28:19.:28:25.

around a grass court. He knows how difficult it is to adjust the first

:28:26.:28:28.

few days, especially the first match with grass under your feet.

:28:29.:29:40.

Good point. Dan Evans's favourite shot, the

:29:41.:29:50.

backhand slice, can be an offensive weapon as well as a defensive shot.

:29:51.:29:54.

It stays low on the grass. He was asking questions there of Melzer.

:29:55.:29:58.

Game point now. I think Evans would like that point

:29:59.:30:13.

back now, you probably should have unleashed one of those backhanders.

:30:14.:30:25.

7000 people here on the main court. A massive, temporary structures all

:30:26.:30:29.

the way around. -- massive temporary structures. Lovely.

:30:30.:30:37.

He has good technique on the volley, Dan Evans. This is perfect here,

:30:38.:30:44.

gets the racket out in front, nicely balanced when he hit this volley,

:30:45.:30:46.

there is the split step. All those times that he struggled in

:30:47.:30:59.

the Davis Cup, when you pick Tim, somebody else benefited -- picked

:31:00.:31:08.

him. Last week, he won a massive match -- last year, he won a massive

:31:09.:31:15.

match, the fifth match, against Russia, which laid the foundations

:31:16.:31:22.

for that wonderful run this year to the quarterfinals, beating America

:31:23.:31:26.

in America before losing to Italy. It takes time in the Davis Cup, it

:31:27.:31:31.

is not always easy when you are thrown in at 19 years old. You

:31:32.:31:35.

hopefully mature and learn from it, which is what he has done, and now

:31:36.:31:37.

he is a very good Davis Cup player. He is coming out of the chair, he is

:31:38.:32:53.

trying to figure it out. I think it is the wrong cushion. Mohammed has

:32:54.:32:58.

been off for a couple of weeks. He took the French Open off and went

:32:59.:33:03.

home to the family, because they do spend an awful lot of time on the

:33:04.:33:07.

road, 20 weeks plus, some of these umpires. And it is a long time the,

:33:08.:33:14.

-- a long time, because they never lose in the first round. They should

:33:15.:33:21.

have tried it my way, and they are only there to criticise, it is not

:33:22.:33:25.

often you come in and say how wonderful the umpire is. If he

:33:26.:33:29.

messes up, people are quick to say it is a lousy job. Shall we praise

:33:30.:33:36.

the umpires, this British grass court season? See how long it lasts.

:33:37.:33:41.

It is the most difficult surface to call on, that is visual, because

:33:42.:33:48.

there are no marks left. The umpires now are so much better than they

:33:49.:33:52.

used to be, they know only to get involved when they need to. In the

:33:53.:33:57.

old days, they used to overrule on a far line, ridiculous on grass courts

:33:58.:34:01.

where they can't see. They used to cause problems. They are pretty good

:34:02.:34:05.

now, by and large, very experienced, they know what they are doing. You

:34:06.:34:10.

know you have made it as an umpire when you have your own position with

:34:11.:34:14.

your own name on it. It is like Rafa with his shoes. He brings his own

:34:15.:34:21.

pillow, he is prepared with his back support. I think they virtually

:34:22.:34:24.

strapped him in. So he will be the umpire for the rest of the week! No

:34:25.:34:26.

brakes. -- breaks. It is an interesting matchup. It is

:34:27.:34:53.

a good match for Don Evans -- Dan Evans, he got the fourth round of

:34:54.:34:59.

Wimbledon last year, so he is no mug on surface.

:35:00.:35:06.

Beautiful. A sort of opponent that, now, you would feel at this stage of

:35:07.:35:14.

his career, Dan Evans on grass should certainly have a good shot at

:35:15.:35:18.

winning a match like this or certainly getting close. These are

:35:19.:35:21.

the sort of players now, you look at him and think he has a very good

:35:22.:35:25.

chance to win this match. He has certainly started off with a lot of

:35:26.:35:26.

confidence. Melzer, 9 million US dollars in his

:35:27.:35:44.

career in prize-money. ?6 million, probably add another million or two

:35:45.:35:49.

for bits and bobs. A lot more than that, he was a big name in Austria

:35:50.:35:53.

so he will have done very well with endorsements and things like that

:35:54.:35:56.

there. Yes, we don't have to worry about Melzer for his next few meals.

:35:57.:36:27.

A very well constructed point. As you pointed out about his slice

:36:28.:36:35.

backhand, he hits the heavy first forehand and then the extreme slice

:36:36.:36:39.

which Melzer hit up but couldn't do much with. He can't dig it up to do

:36:40.:36:44.

much damage with it and then the big forehand takes over.

:36:45.:36:52.

That one, though, there was not enough bite on.

:36:53.:37:00.

Good quality match, though, already. We have only just started but you

:37:01.:37:06.

can see right away, both players have no nerves and striking the ball

:37:07.:37:08.

well. A little slip there from Dan Evans.

:37:09.:37:34.

And he did very well and has such lovely hands and feel but he was

:37:35.:37:38.

able just to control the ball and get back in the rally.

:37:39.:37:53.

Admirable plan of action here. Very good. That first return, he just

:37:54.:38:13.

bunted it back, punched it back but the depth was good, about a foot

:38:14.:38:17.

from the baseline, Melzer couldn't do much with it and then the big

:38:18.:38:22.

forehand takes over. He is mixing it up well so far, Dan Evans.

:38:23.:38:30.

That was the body serve. First game, he just served big serves into

:38:31.:38:36.

the corners and there, a good variation.

:38:37.:40:14.

they make a bad error, generally speaking, they are much more solid

:40:15.:40:18.

on the next point, they don't do it again. Good way to respond, though.

:40:19.:41:35.

Four points in a row and Dan Evans confirms the break of serve. The

:41:36.:41:45.

Davis Cup captain is happy as one of his close for -1 up. I was just

:41:46.:41:51.

thinking, John, as we look at the scoreline, comfortable the Dan Evans

:41:52.:41:55.

so well, this time last year, he won two rounds, he played Nieminen and

:41:56.:42:05.

then lost to Del Potro, played a couple of rounds, and then was a

:42:06.:42:08.

quarterfinalist in the Nottingham Challenger and in the summer,

:42:09.:42:14.

quarterfinal into challenges, in the US, he qualified, he beat atomic.

:42:15.:42:21.

That is his ranking, isn't it? -- he beat Tomic. That is his computer

:42:22.:42:27.

points. Everything between now and September. Does that put pressure on

:42:28.:42:31.

a player or do you just have to hit the ball? It does, in the back of

:42:32.:42:36.

your mind. People pointed out to you, everyone knows where ranking

:42:37.:42:41.

points come from and it is a bit more pressure -- point it out.

:42:42.:42:46.

Looking at Dan Evans, he is so much more mature as a player and as you

:42:47.:42:51.

said about his serve, it has got more pace. He is actually getting

:42:52.:42:59.

aces and almost serves that cannot be returned, more pace about his

:43:00.:43:02.

game and he seems mentally a better player. I think he is going to be a

:43:03.:43:08.

top 100 player before long. He has certainly got the game to be there

:43:09.:43:12.

and I think he could be top 50 with his game, as long as he gives

:43:13.:43:17.

applying himself. He has made the jump when he realises the pro, with

:43:18.:43:21.

the sort of work you have to do consistently... Lets hope he keeps

:43:22.:43:24.

that up, because he is very talented.

:43:25.:43:53.

That is just class. Talk about variation, that point had

:43:54.:43:59.

everything. Sliced backhand is, the drive backhand, and then coming in

:44:00.:44:04.

there at around the service box and a brilliant disguise on the drop

:44:05.:44:07.

shot. No chance for Melzer to get in close.

:44:08.:44:33.

UMPIRE: Wait, please. Good shout, right on it. I certainly didn't spot

:44:34.:44:44.

it. 24 years of age, and Aston Villa fan

:44:45.:45:08.

against Bayern Munich fan. That was a poor flight. That was in

:45:09.:45:37.

the middle of the net. Quite a bit point as well.

:45:38.:46:00.

A couple of inches lower and it might have been interesting. Played

:46:01.:46:06.

quite safe here, but made him play. Slippery left-handed serve, isn't

:46:07.:46:27.

it? Out wide. It is horrible to try and defend against. I don't know

:46:28.:46:30.

why, but left-handers seem to have such an advantage compare to a

:46:31.:46:36.

right-hander serving to a left-hander. Probably just feels

:46:37.:46:37.

that way because I am right-handed. I can't believe he hit that ball on

:46:38.:46:57.

the overhead, it was close to going out and I thought he would let that

:46:58.:47:02.

one bounce. Then it it is this drop shot again from behind the baseline.

:47:03.:47:08.

Melzer is coming up against someone that is giving him a lot of

:47:09.:47:11.

different looks and he is not liking the looks that are coming at him.

:47:12.:47:25.

That is too bad. There is no danger of injury on those ones, both feet

:47:26.:47:32.

going at the same time, but he sets up and suddenly the feet are not

:47:33.:47:38.

there. At this point, he was in a good position to hit a winner as

:47:39.:47:40.

well. So depressing. baseline is cutting up a bit.

:47:41.:48:05.

UMPIRE: Mr Melzer is challenging the call. It looks like it floated long

:48:06.:48:13.

to the naked eye but we have big screens either end of the court.

:48:14.:48:22.

Having a look at Dan Evans' year so far and a bit like James Ward

:48:23.:48:48.

earlier on, who had a superb victory against Blaz Rola, the number one

:48:49.:48:52.

Slovenian on this caught a few minutes ago, the British Davis Cup

:48:53.:48:57.

team minus Andy Murray, if we didn't have him, we would have these two.

:48:58.:49:02.

Qualified in Joe Hart, qualified and made the semifinal in Zagreb,

:49:03.:49:05.

Qualified in Joe Hart, qualified and played seven matches on a tour event

:49:06.:49:11.

-- qualified in Joe Hart. He beat Kohlschreiber amongst others and

:49:12.:49:17.

loss to Tommy Haas. Qualified in Marseille. Just the second round in

:49:18.:49:23.

Nottingham last week. Lost to the Australian. But he doesn't play

:49:24.:49:27.

doubles. With a game like he has got, you would think he would play

:49:28.:49:32.

doubles but he has made zero money from doubles. He is a talented

:49:33.:49:36.

player and would be very good at doubles if he played consistently. I

:49:37.:49:40.

just wonder why he wouldn't do that, with a ranking of 139 in the world,

:49:41.:49:45.

you are not making a lot of money after you pay your expenses.

:49:46.:49:51.

When he is playing qualifying, he has to get to the next tournament.

:49:52.:49:56.

That is another factor to put you off. Hopefully his ranking, the way

:49:57.:50:03.

he's playing at the moment, he won't have to worry about qualifying

:50:04.:50:04.

anymore. It not that far away. That one was, to put it mildly, a

:50:05.:50:21.

difficult shot he tried there. thing here, he is just asking the

:50:22.:50:59.

question of Dan. He is holding serve and then he is going to ask Dan

:51:00.:51:07.

Evans whether he can serve out or not. The moment of truth in this

:51:08.:51:11.

set. Tension between the players just

:51:12.:51:24.

ratchets up a little bit. The players will certainly feel it,

:51:25.:51:28.

whether the crowd do or not. This is certainly a moment in this match. If

:51:29.:51:33.

he can take this set away, he will be in great shape.

:51:34.:51:38.

That one ended up at the tube station.

:51:39.:51:51.

Danger. He needs a first serves. It was a good second serve, but Melzer

:51:52.:51:59.

was so solid on the return and took charge of the rally early on. Evans

:52:00.:52:02.

always on the back foot. That is matchplay right there from

:52:03.:52:49.

Evans. Huge second serve, that was. We haven't got the speed gun at the

:52:50.:52:51.

moment. Evans selecting the newest ball,

:52:52.:53:20.

probably. That is a fabulous service game. Dan

:53:21.:53:44.

Evans, first set to him. 6-3 with that break of serve. Quality. Not

:53:45.:53:52.

trying to put a damper on anything, but you think he is a top 100 player

:53:53.:53:59.

in waiting, top 50. I have seen him play Davis Cup tennis up close, he

:54:00.:54:03.

can really play with quality. What is the difference between 100 player

:54:04.:54:06.

in waiting, top 50. I have seen him play Davis Cup tennis up close, he

:54:07.:54:09.

can really play with quality. What is the difference between the top

:54:10.:54:12.

hundred and that? What has he got to do and how many wins would you say

:54:13.:54:18.

it is? In terms of wins, obviously Grand Slams is where you accumulate

:54:19.:54:22.

the big points. If he can play well in Wimbledon, he has a grass court

:54:23.:54:26.

season coming up where you can make a big jump, but it is the

:54:27.:54:30.

consistency. That said there was as good as it gets from Dan Evans. --

:54:31.:54:37.

that set. He came on court and took charge against the vastly more

:54:38.:54:41.

experienced player. All of a sudden, the big first serves, the second

:54:42.:54:48.

serves... The problem sometimes with Dan is he doesn't keep that level up

:54:49.:54:52.

and that is the difference, the good players keep that level up. He has

:54:53.:54:57.

got to consistently play like this. Does he do the work of the Court Two

:54:58.:55:04.

get him there? He is now, but again, it is being consistent. You can't do

:55:05.:55:10.

it occasionally. It is a. You see Andy Murray, these training camps

:55:11.:55:15.

they go to, it is 52 weeks of the year -- it is a business. Sometimes

:55:16.:55:22.

Dan would get it together for a few odd weeks and then go off and enjoy

:55:23.:55:27.

himself. You have to have brakes now and again but this is a business and

:55:28.:55:33.

you have to treat it like that and I think he can be a top 50 player in

:55:34.:55:37.

the world. -- you have to have breaks. Some of the corporate

:55:38.:55:43.

hospitality here is second to none at the Queen's Club and people are

:55:44.:55:47.

just drifting in at around 3pm. That is when a good lunch comes to a

:55:48.:55:49.

close. Now, against someone like Melzer,

:55:50.:56:01.

you win the first set but you can't relax for one second because you

:56:02.:56:04.

know Melzer is going to come at you. He is not going to give you

:56:05.:56:07.

anything easily, that is for sure. Look at that. Beautiful. Literally,

:56:08.:57:05.

you can't get it any closer to the net than that. Little bit back spin

:57:06.:57:14.

just brings it back in. -- of back spin.

:57:15.:57:18.

That is three serve and volleys in a row, you don't see it very often

:57:19.:57:25.

from Melzer. You don't see it very often from anybody, to be honest,

:57:26.:57:26.

these days. Fine work. Five times he has been

:57:27.:57:48.

victorious on the ATP Tour. The last of those was the hard courts, in

:57:49.:57:54.

North America, leading up to the U.S. Open last year. So he is a

:57:55.:57:58.

winner quite recently, and an old one to, he's 33 now, he turned that

:57:59.:58:07.

last month. Eight career finals as well, so 13 times he has been in an

:58:08.:58:14.

ATP final. An experienced man. He is going to stick around in this, you

:58:15.:58:16.

would imagine. That is worthy of booing. Eight sets

:58:17.:58:24.

of hands were up on that one. We saw the technique on his forehand

:58:25.:59:09.

volley in the first set, now we are seeing the backhand volley. This is

:59:10.:59:12.

getting the ball out in front. Look how far in front he was, but

:59:13.:59:17.

perfectly balanced. Just punched that ball away. Beautifully done.

:59:18.:00:35.

serve, Jurgen Melzer. He has improved his second serve power too.

:00:36.:00:40.

He is crunching the seconds and they are about an inch from the line.

:00:41.:02:42.

The first day of wings club. We have got this and Eastbourne next week

:02:43.:02:50.

and then the Championships at Wimbledon -- Queen's Club. You look

:02:51.:02:57.

very well. It has gone quickly this year with Andy Murray as Wimbledon

:02:58.:03:03.

champion. The weather is better today. I do not think we had a day

:03:04.:03:08.

like this last year. It was dreadful. The amount of rain delays

:03:09.:03:15.

were amazing. The temperature, it was about 15 degrees less. Perfect

:03:16.:03:22.

at the moment. Andy Murray in action on Wednesday. We are lucky to have

:03:23.:03:29.

him. We certainly are. He is a class player. With the French Open, you

:03:30.:03:34.

are left with that last image. He got dumped by the greatest

:03:35.:03:39.

clay-court player of all-time. We have to not forget he got to the

:03:40.:03:43.

semifinals. Considering where he was with his injury and stuff he played

:03:44.:03:47.

tremendous matches. He looked tired in the semis. Unfortunately, coming

:03:48.:03:55.

up against Nadal who was on a different planet, that is obvious.

:03:56.:03:59.

Anybody who has ever had surgery knows it is not just a physical

:04:00.:04:03.

thing, mentally to come back from surgery takes a little bit of

:04:04.:04:08.

something. He certainly appears to be back in terms of his appetite for

:04:09.:04:11.

victory. No question. Another good sir. At the moment,

:04:12.:04:42.

Melzer is not sure where the ball is going -- another good serve. He is

:04:43.:04:47.

hitting wide, down the middle. He is not getting any rhythm. He is trying

:04:48.:04:55.

to changes position to put a different look in his mind.

:04:56.:05:10.

It is good, professional staff from Melzer. -- stuff. Got to do

:05:11.:05:25.

something. Big serves from Dan Evans.

:05:26.:05:43.

Two excellent returns of serves from Melzer on the forehand. Forcing

:05:44.:05:53.

Evans into errors. What is this about?

:05:54.:06:03.

It is going to be a long British season, Madame! She is getting

:06:04.:06:58.

worked up on behalf of Dan Evans already.

:06:59.:07:08.

Do you think it could have been that Evans was having a word with the

:07:09.:07:16.

umpire about Melzer leaping around on his first serve? It did not feel

:07:17.:07:22.

that way. Here's leaping around. All over the place. He has opened up his

:07:23.:07:32.

rack -- his racket. He is like a peacock saying, serve at me. Pulled

:07:33.:07:41.

the double fault out. This is legitimate gamesmanship, that is

:07:42.:07:44.

what this is. I think he is having a moan. Melzer

:07:45.:07:58.

saying, come on, lad. This is good! Good stuff.

:07:59.:08:03.

He has certainly not served as well. He has lost his first serve

:08:04.:08:07.

rhythm. That is going to irritate. It is

:08:08.:08:28.

going to be age Allan Johnston is. -- be a challenge upstairs. Melzer,

:08:29.:08:37.

by getting himself animated, by getting Evans to take his eye off

:08:38.:08:41.

the ball, I think he has got the break. Yes, he has. It is well

:08:42.:08:48.

played. Are you all right with that? Absolutely.

:08:49.:09:02.

It would not be OK if he was doing it to you! Of course not.

:09:03.:09:17.

When it comes to body banter and throwing a bit of cheeky stuff

:09:18.:09:27.

around, I think Dan would be able to hold his own.

:09:28.:09:52.

Now Evans knocks the ball over there knowing that the poor girl will not

:09:53.:09:59.

be able to pick it up. Makes Melzer weight. Never say you have got to

:10:00.:10:05.

play your game. You have got to play your opponent. That is what they are

:10:06.:10:08.

doing here. Got to be kidding! I don't know if

:10:09.:11:04.

we will see many misses like that in the World Cup! That was an open

:11:05.:11:11.

goal. That is unbelievable that he could miss by that much as well.

:11:12.:11:13.

Open court. A big point as well. Evans has got to be careful. He is

:11:14.:11:40.

getting pushed too far behind the baseline. The passing shots are not

:11:41.:11:44.

easy to hit a winner in that position.

:11:45.:12:04.

He is back in France again, Dan Evans, shouting! He has not adjusted

:12:05.:12:17.

his time clock. Held his ground and planted the foot and played the open

:12:18.:12:22.

stance back and. There is no time on a grass court. -- backhand. It shows

:12:23.:12:31.

a player and double on the surface. -- comfortable. He is still having a

:12:32.:12:39.

go at the umpire about the way Melzer is moving between the service

:12:40.:12:45.

motion. But he has got his own back on him there. As you quite rightly

:12:46.:12:50.

said. He time wasted a bit, legitimately again, but again that

:12:51.:12:57.

is sort of a bit of growing up from Dan Evans. Coming up against an

:12:58.:13:02.

established player and he is not afraid to impose himself. It is good

:13:03.:13:11.

to have a bit of fire on the court like this. You are slightly older

:13:12.:13:16.

than me. Who was your generation... ? Nastase. Jimmy Connors. I did not

:13:17.:13:26.

have many problems with him because he thrashed me a -- every time! He

:13:27.:13:37.

knew how to master the. Umpires, linesmen, the crowd, whatever it

:13:38.:13:39.

took to win, he would do it. He sort of hit the kicker there and

:13:40.:14:24.

slowed it down. He has been belting the seconds. He took a bit of a soft

:14:25.:14:30.

and clipped the top of the net. -- a bit of pace off.

:14:31.:14:56.

Such good racket head control. Melzer had him completely

:14:57.:15:07.

off-balance. He caught it late. He knew what he was doing with that

:15:08.:15:12.

ball and faded it out wide. Look how deep he got Melzer in. Impossible

:15:13.:15:18.

position. Followed it in as well. Good instincts. Great game.

:15:19.:15:29.

This is a real racket centre, this Queen's Club. They play real tennis

:15:30.:15:37.

and squash as well. They play racket long which is a mixture of four

:15:38.:15:39.

sports. That was great from Evans. Played a lot of squash as a junior,

:15:40.:15:51.

Dan. You can see it in his game. At 40-0, it might not be worth

:15:52.:16:50.

wasting a challenge on. UMPIRE: Mr Melzer challenging the

:16:51.:16:54.

call. He has lost his voice! Such a rich

:16:55.:17:19.

voice, but we are missing it. Interesting first-round match here

:17:20.:17:55.

at Queen's Club in West London. Day one of the main event. There was a

:17:56.:18:03.

Challenger last week in Nottingham that Marcos Baghdatis won. He is

:18:04.:18:09.

here. He is going to come in flying. A lot of matches already. He is

:18:10.:18:14.

playing Stanislas Wawrinka. That will be a tough match for Stan

:18:15.:18:22.

Wawrinka. Who do you expect to win? Well, presuming Marcos Baghdatis

:18:23.:18:28.

wins the first round, I would go with him. But it could be nasty. Not

:18:29.:18:35.

an easy match. The Australian Open champion, Stanislas Wawrinka. Myrdal

:18:36.:18:43.

injured his back in that. -- Nadal injured his back in that. It looked

:18:44.:18:49.

like his back was troubling him a little bit in the full set of the

:18:50.:18:54.

win over Djokovic. Not enough to hold him back. Unbelievable sporting

:18:55.:18:56.

achievement. win over Djokovic. Not enough to

:18:57.:18:59.

hold him back. Unbelievable I suppose winning eight French Opens.

:19:00.:19:08.

Nine! It is nonsense. It will never be beaten. It is impossible. Bjorn

:19:09.:19:19.

Borg won six with no losses. He will probably win another couple. I would

:19:20.:19:25.

equate that to somebody winning the football World Cup three times in a

:19:26.:19:27.

row. It has 135mph on the scoreboard at

:19:28.:20:15.

the end there. We are just recalibrating that. It was around

:20:16.:20:16.

about 120. We will figure it out. Some of the players that play at the

:20:17.:20:30.

Albert Hall in the senior invitation events would like that speed on the

:20:31.:20:35.

courts they are playing at! Generous.

:20:36.:21:21.

I would have expected Melzer to make that folly. No, I don't mechanise

:21:22.:21:29.

any of them! Average grass court players.

:21:30.:21:45.

So much tennis on the TV now. It is hard to remember what it was like

:21:46.:21:54.

when there was not much telly and McEnroe was scheduled. That was an

:21:55.:21:57.

appointment to view, it really was. Should have made that. Too many

:21:58.:22:15.

options. Could have lobbed, gone crosscourt. He picked the hardest,

:22:16.:22:18.

to go off backhand. We are going to have the poor umpire

:22:19.:23:20.

replaced. His voice has gone. He has had a lovely time with his family in

:23:21.:23:25.

Marbella for a couple of weeks, but he is really struggling to get the

:23:26.:23:28.

words out. That is not normally the case. This is from Jamie. On

:23:29.:23:36.

Twitter. Evans seems quite casual on court. Do you agree and is it good

:23:37.:23:44.

or bad? You can get in touch with us on Twitter. That is just the way he

:23:45.:23:48.

is. He has always been that way. It is fine. Every player has different

:23:49.:23:56.

mannerisms. You can act a certain way on court to please others which

:23:57.:24:00.

is not honest to yourself. You have to be who you are on the court. As

:24:01.:24:06.

long as it does not take on negative connotations where you are shaking

:24:07.:24:10.

your head and all of that stuff. He does not do that. Only

:24:11.:24:18.

occasionally. I think he is casual. The body works better if you are

:24:19.:24:23.

relaxed and casual. It is a boiling hot day here at Queen's Club. The

:24:24.:24:28.

hottest day of the year so far. Temperatures down there must be 27,

:24:29.:24:43.

20 8 degrees. Nearly air less. -- 27, 28 degrees.

:24:44.:25:07.

A controlled swipe from Melzer. He made sure the lines person was not

:25:08.:25:19.

there when he whacked it. You have to be careful.

:25:20.:25:49.

He got lucky! Just a little over a minute for that game. That is

:25:50.:26:00.

comfortable, isn't it? Getting into the heart of the match

:26:01.:26:10.

here after an hour of play. His first round matches at Queen's

:26:11.:27:08.

Club often dominated by errors. But this is a match between two players

:27:09.:27:12.

with great know-how on this surface. Day one that Queen's Club. Quality.

:27:13.:28:08.

Good move around there from Evans. He gambled. It is always dicey to

:28:09.:28:15.

move around on the second serve from a lefty because it is serving into

:28:16.:28:20.

your body. He got in nice and quick. He whacked the forehand. When you

:28:21.:28:28.

have a backhand like he has... Exactly. He can get more power on

:28:29.:28:35.

it. He knew exactly what he would do and he gambled and it was exactly

:28:36.:28:43.

the right tactic. That was a good serve. De go to serve for a lefty.

:28:44.:28:49.

If you try to cover it, they slip the serve down the middle. -- the go

:28:50.:28:52.

to serve. Right on that ball too. Here is

:28:53.:29:07.

playing a good match. Tried to come over and missed it.

:29:08.:29:57.

Good hold, Melzer. He was under pressure at 15-30. Did the right

:29:58.:30:03.

things. This is what you expect from him. Just outside the top 50 now.

:30:04.:30:08.

Started the year at number 60 and he did not start until Monte Carlo. He

:30:09.:30:16.

beat Marin Cilic and Dennis Isner in Rome. A couple of rounds of

:30:17.:30:22.

Dusseldorf. This is a quality player and a man with a doubles record to

:30:23.:30:32.

be proud of as well. He won the doubles at troubled and in 2010. The

:30:33.:30:37.

Mixed Doubles champion at Wimbledon in 2011. -- the doubles at

:30:38.:30:45.

Wimbledon. He married his doubles partner a year later. That was a

:30:46.:30:51.

good week! Did you ever think about playing with any ex-wives at all or

:30:52.:30:58.

anything like that it up you could have picked worse partners. Did you

:30:59.:31:06.

play mixed? We played a few matches. Not particularly well, I might add.

:31:07.:31:12.

You managed to win a couple of Mixed Doubles without her? Yeah.

:31:13.:32:00.

serve, Melzer. He did think about stopping. I wonder if it was in or

:32:01.:32:07.

out. It caught the back of the line, that second serve, so actually it

:32:08.:32:08.

was a brilliant second serve. He would like to take that point

:32:09.:33:44.

back because that was not a great serve from Melzer. He just sort of

:33:45.:33:49.

stabbed it back, he could have really hit that one.

:33:50.:34:16.

Very good half leave there from Melzer, but Evans just drilled the

:34:17.:35:31.

ball. Just got to keep that first serve the way it has been going. It

:35:32.:35:36.

is a mini-break now, still a long way to go in this tie-breaker.

:35:37.:36:00.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. You have just got to go for it. He

:36:01.:36:15.

is whacking that thing. It has kept Melzer from hurting him at all on

:36:16.:36:19.

his second serve, his statistics have been very good in that area.

:36:20.:36:26.

That was just buy one or two inches, it can happen. He has got to keep

:36:27.:36:28.

faith with it. Shame. This is when you have got to

:36:29.:37:02.

just calm it. No time now for that. That is bad news, two doubles in a

:37:03.:37:06.

row. They are a bit nervy, aren't they?

:37:07.:37:25.

Yes, that was a nice gift. He had the chance to come on in,

:37:26.:39:02.

early ball in the rally, after a pretty decent second serve. But as

:39:03.:39:08.

it is, Melzer took the net position and on a grass court, that is still

:39:09.:39:11.

the place to be. Just couldn't find the first serve,

:39:12.:39:44.

the last few points. I presume here that if Melzer does his serve out

:39:45.:40:02.

wide... Well closed, well played from a mini-break down. In that

:40:03.:40:12.

tie-break, Melzer wins you don't want to be harsh, you know it's not

:40:13.:40:16.

easy, but it's the difference between being 40, 50, 60 in the

:40:17.:40:25.

world, and what Dan Evans is, which is a player full of highlights,

:40:26.:40:30.

talent and work most of the time. The difference is so tiny. It is so

:40:31.:40:36.

tiny and you look at how well he has served in the match but

:40:37.:40:40.

unfortunately, when it counted, he missed the first -- the four first

:40:41.:40:51.

serves in a row. That was the difference in that tie-breaker when

:40:52.:40:55.

it really came down to it. Then he tried a top-spin lob on a huge

:40:56.:41:03.

point. There is a little dip there and it is enough for an experienced

:41:04.:41:08.

player to take command. If he were to lose this match, and he is by no

:41:09.:41:13.

means out of this, he will look back at it. That is what they have to

:41:14.:41:18.

analyse. You cannot do those sorts of things at crucial stages in the

:41:19.:41:23.

match, not if you are going to take that next level up in the game.

:41:24.:41:30.

Martin Stickley has e-mailed us - seeing the gamesmanship has got me

:41:31.:41:34.

thinking, has there ever been a big. Between players? Oh, yes, there are

:41:35.:41:43.

too many paragraphs to go into. Not so many these days. Plenty in the

:41:44.:41:49.

locker room. I saw a couple of classics in the old days, sometimes

:41:50.:41:59.

when players knew it was going to happen because we knew there was a

:42:00.:42:04.

navigation. On the match point everybody ran into the locker room

:42:05.:42:07.

and pretended we were getting ready for the next match that we didn't

:42:08.:42:17.

even have, and they got this player up against a wall and forgot he had

:42:18.:42:25.

a huge Italian bodyguard. That was the end of that but there were many

:42:26.:42:38.

of those occasions. There is a story about Bjorn Borg putting Ivan Lendl

:42:39.:42:49.

up against the wall. You think he was gentle and lovely all the

:42:50.:42:55.

time... The is! But I suppose it's the quiet ones, isn't it, John?

:42:56.:44:33.

Difficult moments now, trying to get over the disappointment. Dan Evans,

:44:34.:44:41.

British number two behind Andy Murray. Had a mini-break in the

:44:42.:44:47.

second set tie-breaker, having won the first. The game fell away a

:44:48.:44:48.

little bit. Look at that, Tony Roach in the

:44:49.:45:13.

white cap with Lleyton Hewitt. Lleyton Hewitt just loves this game,

:45:14.:45:19.

wants to play, loves the competition, refuses to accept that

:45:20.:45:23.

he hasn't got more to offer in the game. There was a little bit of talk

:45:24.:45:33.

around on Twitter about him coaching Andy Murray. That struck me as an

:45:34.:45:35.

interesting one. Right in the corner. We are seeing

:45:36.:46:24.

an exhibition of good, solid, professional matchplay here. It

:46:25.:46:33.

doesn't take a lot, when you are playing against someone who is that

:46:34.:46:37.

experienced, if you have a slight dip that is all it takes. That is

:46:38.:46:44.

what happened with Melzer, that tie-breaker, that slight glimmer of

:46:45.:46:49.

hope, the two double faults from Dan Evans got him ahead and after that

:46:50.:46:54.

he jumped on him. In that game, very aggressive with the returns, big

:46:55.:47:00.

forehand is taking over. Dan Evans has got to get his mind back. His

:47:01.:47:03.

game has dropped a little bit. Outstanding stretch from Evans. I

:47:04.:49:12.

thought he was out of this point. The slice just setting up a little

:49:13.:49:18.

bit, and it looks like he was gone on that forehand. Melzer did slip,

:49:19.:49:24.

but still, it was a fabulous recovery.

:49:25.:49:56.

Melzer will feel hard done by Bob Dan Evans is right back in it. To

:49:57.:50:04.

break back shows decent composure. Yes, a lot of credit therefore Dan

:50:05.:50:16.

Evans. -- there for Dan Evans. He could have easily lost some

:50:17.:50:19.

confidence after the tie-break but he bounced back and that was a well

:50:20.:50:25.

earned game. He has got to get his service back a little bit, it

:50:26.:50:30.

dropped off in that tie-breaker and the last game. He could do with a

:50:31.:50:35.

few body serves as well. He is not doing that as much as he was in the

:50:36.:50:38.

first part of the match. Well done! He has had two overheads

:50:39.:52:13.

in this match, both about one foot from the baseline and he has dealt

:52:14.:52:18.

with them both admirably. Pretty close to the baseline, that is a

:52:19.:52:29.

good overhead. Two first serves in a row as well, that's nice.

:52:30.:53:20.

That is an excellent two games. An excellent visit to that end of the

:53:21.:53:26.

court. Because when he turned up there, he was 1-0 down and a break.

:53:27.:53:34.

You have got to fight that feeling of satisfaction and keep the hunger,

:53:35.:53:39.

but I thought that was a very positive reaction to adversity. He

:53:40.:53:44.

is just getting this taping. It looks like talcum powder, maybe it

:53:45.:53:52.

is just pulling up a little bit. I assume that is just too help the

:53:53.:54:16.

tendon, John? What do you know about kinesio taping? Not much. Does he

:54:17.:54:30.

visit Andy Murray? I know Carl Edmund has spent time with Andy

:54:31.:54:36.

Murray in Miami around Christmas, New Year time. I think there will be

:54:37.:54:41.

a big queue for that. If you can train with Andy Murray for a few

:54:42.:54:44.

weeks in those conditions with his work ethic, you can only come out a

:54:45.:54:49.

better player. If he can somehow put himself to the front of that queue,

:54:50.:54:55.

it can do a lot for your game, that's for sure. He doesn't like it

:54:56.:54:59.

when people are late. It is the standards and value people ring. It

:55:00.:55:05.

is business, you are trained to play a certain amount of hours, rest

:55:06.:55:12.

periods, physical therapy. All of the input is fantastic, and you come

:55:13.:55:16.

out of their just knowing so much more about the game. --, out of

:55:17.:55:29.

there. I would like to see Evans on the

:55:30.:56:18.

backhand side coming over the ball a little bit. He doesn't want to

:56:19.:56:22.

become too reliant on slicing every ball. I think if he could flatten

:56:23.:56:29.

out the ball, he has a great backhand drive when he goes for it.

:56:30.:56:51.

I thought he had this folly, but the dip was just enough to beat him. He

:56:52.:57:01.

should have had that one. He snatched a little bit. The slight

:57:02.:57:03.

opening here for Evans. That is a poor volley. This is the

:57:04.:57:39.

height that you'd like a volley, right here. When you are in your

:57:40.:57:45.

zone, you shouldn't miss that one all day long. A big point too.

:57:46.:58:40.

Pretty smart hold. Melzer was not known for a very big serve, and that

:58:41.:58:49.

was a good base, but the ones before that were good serves, I think he

:58:50.:58:55.

got four in a row but it was the variation and accuracy. It doesn't

:58:56.:58:59.

have to be a big serve if it is in the corner, and that is what he did

:59:00.:59:03.

there. as a wildcard in 2008, quickly

:59:04.:00:50.

skinny slight teenager, Dan Evans. But there is some meet.

:00:51.:01:06.

That is the trouble again. So far behind the baseline. You have to hit

:01:07.:01:13.

an outright winner otherwise you are dead on the next shot.

:01:14.:01:45.

The 13th ace from Dan Evans. There was some question about whether if

:01:46.:01:55.

Scotland goes independent, would Andy Murray play for Scotland? And

:01:56.:02:00.

therefore, what would the Davis Cup team do? England would be James Ward

:02:01.:02:09.

and Dan Evans. What would they do in terms of... Where would you place

:02:10.:02:14.

the two teams Quetta not Britain are in the world group. They were

:02:15.:02:20.

quarterfinalists this year. -- where would you place the two teams? They

:02:21.:02:26.

cannot allow an extra space for Scotland and England. How would they

:02:27.:02:31.

do that? I don't know. But Scotland have a handy team. Leon Smith, the

:02:32.:02:41.

captain there. Edinburgh man. Colin Fleming in the doubles with Andy.

:02:42.:02:50.

That is all you need! That is a world group team right there. Sure

:02:51.:03:00.

is. England could have Jonny Marray, Ross Hutchins. Dan Evans and

:03:01.:03:09.

James Ward. Not bad. Home internationals would be good.

:03:10.:03:22.

He needs to take advantage of the second serves, Melzer. He is not

:03:23.:03:30.

getting many of them at the moment. Nice bonus.

:03:31.:04:32.

Two big chances there. Chance on the return and only passing shot. Club

:04:33.:04:41.

professional here at Queen's Club, Lee Childs. Good Somerset man.

:04:42.:04:51.

UMPIRE: Mr Evans challenging the call.

:04:52.:05:03.

Lee Childs can hit the ball hard. He played Nadal when he was 17.

:05:04.:05:16.

Good know-how. Just to finish that point on the home internationals,

:05:17.:05:30.

independence for Scotland, what would happen to the tennis teams,

:05:31.:05:35.

Wales and Northern Ireland, not sure who they will come up with. Where

:05:36.:05:39.

are they going to put all of these teams? Good luck to them figuring

:05:40.:05:46.

all of that out. We will cross that bridge when we get to it.

:05:47.:05:55.

I suppose they would have to do it on ranking.

:05:56.:07:02.

I just think that serve is not used enough, that body serve.

:07:03.:07:27.

This is certainly a moment in this match. 3-3, 30-30.

:07:28.:07:45.

Looks wide. UMPIRE: Mr Melzer challenging the

:07:46.:07:51.

call. The ball is called in. Did it catch

:07:52.:07:59.

a bit? They will be looking at these screens. It did.

:08:00.:08:30.

APPLAUSE Melzer, that is the death stare. He

:08:31.:08:50.

is very, very cross with our Dan. What is the cross about? Here's just

:08:51.:08:58.

demonstrating his passion to win. Do you think it is easy playing Melzer

:08:59.:09:04.

in Austria? Here's just cross about missing the return and perhaps an

:09:05.:09:11.

imagined disrespect. Here's just shouting to get himself going. I

:09:12.:09:14.

thought that was good reaction from Evans. I am not having a go at him,

:09:15.:09:21.

but I'm sure that is what Melzer is thinking. When you are a more

:09:22.:09:29.

experienced player, you give a look. But Dan did not even look at him. It

:09:30.:09:33.

is no good if the other person is not seeing it. That was all...

:09:34.:09:40.

Looked nice, camera wise. But it did not do too much. A wasted death

:09:41.:09:53.

stare! You can only summon up that sort of looked a couple of times

:09:54.:09:59.

over the course of the match. You will exhaust yourself. They have

:10:00.:10:02.

been at it for much of this match which is now an hour and three

:10:03.:10:06.

quarters old. Thoroughly entertaining. Lleyton Hewitt still

:10:07.:10:09.

to come. Good first day's play. Thought he might just smack one at

:10:10.:10:29.

him again and see if he gets another of those stares.

:10:30.:10:56.

If Melzer misses his first serve, Evans might try to get under his

:10:57.:11:02.

skin here a bit. Good play. Just that chip return, got to be a

:11:03.:11:19.

foot lower than that. Tough to fit that shot. Your timing has got to be

:11:20.:11:22.

precise. -- tough to hit. The East stand one. North stand now.

:11:23.:11:36.

Good catch. That is not the shot. Not good shot

:11:37.:13:15.

selection from that distance on the court. Or the drop shot too. Badly

:13:16.:13:23.

played point. Be careful now. This must end of the set and match. You

:13:24.:13:31.

cannot mess around. What a recovery. 15 aces from Dan Evans. That is

:13:32.:13:36.

tremendous serving. I would be surprised if he has ever served that

:13:37.:13:41.

many in a match. I might be wrong, but I doubt it.

:13:42.:13:59.

He has not passed very well on his backhand side. He has missed a lot

:14:00.:14:06.

of those opportunities. It is normally a really good part of his

:14:07.:14:07.

game. Memories of Jimmy Connors. He really

:14:08.:14:39.

got through that. Flat as a pancake. Hit the grass and shot through.

:14:40.:14:45.

Suddenly, it is a break point at 4-4. Decider.

:14:46.:15:07.

He has just hit the best backhand of the whole match. That was a slice

:15:08.:15:15.

shove. Five feet macro from the baseline. Look at that shot. -- 5ft

:15:16.:15:22.

from the baseline. That of chest beating from Melzer

:15:23.:15:48.

and no reward. He played a very fine break point. He will be disappointed

:15:49.:15:50.

if he loses this game. That is a tremendous escape from Dan

:15:51.:16:20.

Evans. He really hit maybe a one in ten backhand. Generous. One in 20?

:16:21.:16:31.

He was gone at that point. That could have saved him the whole

:16:32.:16:35.

match. That was basically match point against him. Tremendous

:16:36.:16:40.

effort. Did well to hang in on that game. If he can get through it, this

:16:41.:16:44.

match will be eight Amanda 's boost. Coming through a match like

:16:45.:16:50.

this against an experienced player who has thrown everything at him...

:16:51.:16:56.

-- this match will be a tremendous boost. These results are on a 12

:16:57.:17:04.

month basis. These computer points will drop off next Monday from last

:17:05.:17:08.

year. It will be replaced by this year. That is right. Jarko Nieminen

:17:09.:17:19.

and others. This will not be on his mind now. He is just playing the

:17:20.:17:28.

match. Tremendous. You get to see ropey stuff on day one. People are

:17:29.:17:33.

nervous about movement of them. But they have been diving around here.

:17:34.:17:37.

The quality has been excellent from the first point.

:17:38.:17:40.

He has not really unleashed this shot too many times. That one was

:17:41.:18:30.

beautifully struck. Had his man beat! What a pity.

:18:31.:18:57.

Melzer slipped. Anything in the court and it would have been a

:18:58.:18:59.

winner. Just drifted wide. Ninth ace for Melzer. 16 for Dan

:19:00.:19:20.

Evans. Double figures brings home the game

:19:21.:19:36.

and parity in the decider. -- brings him.

:19:37.:19:44.

James Ward, the British number three, already a winner on this

:19:45.:19:52.

court today. Blaz Rola was his victim. Dan Evans is 5-5 against

:19:53.:19:56.

Melzer of Austria. The winner of this match plays big

:19:57.:20:11.

Kevin Anderson, the South African, number seven seed. Demanding on a

:20:12.:20:13.

grass court, that one. Demanding on any surface! Kevin

:20:14.:20:27.

Anderson is a world-class player now. Always nasty to play against.

:20:28.:21:42.

This court has already been nicely scarred from the play and the

:21:43.:22:01.

sliding. This is mostly done. Right foot down. -- nicely done. Fluidity

:22:02.:22:07.

of movement has been a feature of his game today.

:22:08.:22:51.

UMPIRE: Mr Evans is challenging the call.

:22:52.:23:00.

The umpire was very quick to put his finger up and say he thought the

:23:01.:23:07.

ball is out and he is on it. His voice might not be 100%, but his

:23:08.:23:10.

eyes are. UMPIRE: Mr Evans has one challenge

:23:11.:23:26.

remaining. He has found some useful backhand returns, Melzer.

:23:27.:25:04.

The grand stroke from Evans on the forehand. -- the ground stroke. If

:25:05.:25:14.

you are not actually with it, he punishes you on the next ball. He

:25:15.:25:21.

hit the forehand OK, Dan Evans, but it was not in the right place. Comes

:25:22.:25:23.

belting back and he is in trouble. That is what has got him out of a

:25:24.:25:35.

troubled though, his first serve, aces. -- a lot of trouble.

:25:36.:25:53.

It is a six minute game and Dan Evans gets out of it. Did not face a

:25:54.:26:07.

break point in that game but it felt dangerous. He had 40-15 and Melzer

:26:08.:26:13.

came back and was threatening. It is a fine holdall serve. He will go to

:26:14.:26:22.

the tie-break. He needs to pick up a point or two. You have got to try

:26:23.:26:27.

and get into the game to start with on a grass court. That is absolutely

:26:28.:26:35.

right. One or two grimaces from Dan Evans around the strapping on his

:26:36.:26:40.

left knee. Not being attended to. No time for that. One more game and a

:26:41.:26:47.

tie-break, whatever happens. It has been an impressive performance

:26:48.:26:50.

because with 7000 people here and home fans and TV watching as well,

:26:51.:26:58.

it is a big match for Dan Evans. He loves playing on grass courts. It

:26:59.:27:06.

was impressive also in the second set tie-break when he served the two

:27:07.:27:11.

doubles and lost the set and lost the first game of the third. It was

:27:12.:27:14.

worrying. You thought he might go away easily. But he did not. He

:27:15.:27:21.

broke right back. He has held serve the whole way through. Melzer has

:27:22.:27:25.

been returning well too. Good effort.

:27:26.:28:06.

APPLAUSE That is a welcome structured point.

:28:07.:28:17.

-- welcome structured. Took charge on the return of serve. Then the

:28:18.:28:24.

drop shot. Moved up in the right position. Volleys into the open

:28:25.:28:26.

court. Had more time on that one. He was

:28:27.:28:41.

almost there too soon. Change of pace from Melzer. But of a bluff

:28:42.:28:45.

serve and he got away with it. Evans would have taken this

:28:46.:29:22.

position, 30-30, at the start of this game.

:29:23.:30:02.

He did well to get himself back into this rally. He was in trouble on a

:30:03.:30:12.

few occasions. He had a go at the highest point of the net, and didn't

:30:13.:30:13.

make it. That's going in! That could bring

:30:14.:31:40.

down rain, that lob! The approach to Heathrow is about 12 miles to the

:31:41.:31:46.

left. That one would have worried them temporarily. So it is a

:31:47.:31:51.

tie-break to see who goes through to play Kevin Anderson in the second

:31:52.:31:52.

round. He stood up to that second serve,

:31:53.:33:07.

didn't he? Just unable to find the right height.

:33:08.:33:27.

Oh, yes, this time. Threading the needle, Dan Evans with a mini-break.

:33:28.:33:38.

That was fine anticipation. The execution of the drop volley was not

:33:39.:33:45.

great, but Evans was on it. He had the wherewithal to find the right

:33:46.:33:47.

shot. That is talent. He did well to manoeuvre his feet,

:33:48.:34:05.

get out of the way of the ball. The ball came at him quickly.

:34:06.:34:29.

How different this from the second set breaker where Dan Evans got his

:34:30.:34:36.

nose in front and double-faulted twice. This time two good points on

:34:37.:34:38.

his own serve, in control. He has wrapped that around the

:34:39.:35:46.

frame. Dan Evans really is closing in on this victory against a much

:35:47.:35:53.

higher ranked man. Melzer has not been able to get a first serve, and

:35:54.:35:59.

looked the edgier one. That is very well handled.

:36:00.:36:22.

Tremendous half-volley, wasn't it? Unbelievable.

:36:23.:36:40.

It has been a grand day of day one at the Queen's Club. Dan Evans

:36:41.:36:57.

disposes of Jurgen Melzer, a proven performer at the highest level. What

:36:58.:37:04.

a start here. Another wildcard decision to be applauded. What a

:37:05.:37:08.

classy performance that was, what a fabulous first round match as well.

:37:09.:37:13.

That really was an outstanding effort, from blowing that second set

:37:14.:37:19.

in the tie-breaker, he got tight on those two double faults in a row.

:37:20.:37:24.

Goes down an early break in the third and you could easily imagine

:37:25.:37:36.

him... He kept his nerve, had 17 aces. I'm not sure he has had 17

:37:37.:37:43.

aces in a year, hasn't he? He stuck to his game plan, even after that

:37:44.:37:51.

break in the second set. He took risks, but it paid off. We have seen

:37:52.:37:59.

him perform at such a high level in the Australian Open last year.

:38:00.:38:07.

Earlier this year, a semifinalist as well, so it is not a surprise when

:38:08.:38:11.

he wins these sorts of matches but it is a delight. It is just further

:38:12.:38:17.

evidence of how good he can be. He doesn't need convincing, he knows he

:38:18.:38:21.

has a gift to play the game, and he is the root of the second round to

:38:22.:38:28.

play Anderson. Let's get his thoughts.

:38:29.:38:30.

Quite a victory, what were the keys to that one? Just staying... Holding

:38:31.:38:38.

my serve. The second set was tight, with both broke each other, as we

:38:39.:38:43.

did in the first so I had to keep holding on to my serve and trying to

:38:44.:38:50.

get the points on his serve. I always get the impression you love

:38:51.:38:55.

the big stage, do you enjoy playing here? Yes, days like today, playing

:38:56.:39:01.

a guy who has been as high is that in the world, you have to go out

:39:02.:39:06.

there and enjoy it. Obviously I want to win, and I have just got to enjoy

:39:07.:39:12.

it and go out there and fight. That's what I did, I got the win.

:39:13.:39:19.

You had a good run in Zagreb earlier this season, and it must give you

:39:20.:39:23.

the belief you can be a permanent fixture in the top 101-day? Yes,

:39:24.:39:29.

definitely, that is what all the Brits are trying to do and I think

:39:30.:39:34.

we are getting closer. I am here today to try and win and I will come

:39:35.:39:39.

out on Wednesday and do the same. What are you expecting from Kevin

:39:40.:39:43.

Anderson, apart from serves coming down from a great height. I have

:39:44.:39:49.

played him before and lost so it can only get better. Well done today.

:39:50.:39:56.

Thank you. Very well done, particularly that

:39:57.:40:01.

last tie-break, super from Dan Evans. He takes on Kevin Anderson

:40:02.:40:06.

tomorrow and it has been a terrific day for British tennis so far on

:40:07.:40:13.

Centre Court. Just before Dan Evans won, James Ward went through in

:40:14.:40:21.

straight sets against Blaz Rola. He will take on his next opponent

:40:22.:40:27.

tomorrow. Coming up next on the Centre Court, Lleyton Hewitt, always

:40:28.:40:38.

great to watch. Other results to bring you:

:40:39.:41:22.

The Frenchman will play Andy Murray on Wednesday, and it has been a busy

:41:23.:41:30.

day for him out this afternoon, practising with Tomas Berdych. I say

:41:31.:41:41.

a busy day, because he was out earlier with another player so he is

:41:42.:41:44.

making the most of the weather, trying to get used to the grass

:41:45.:41:48.

court. The big news is that our lamer as -- Amelie Mauresmo, his new

:41:49.:42:09.

coach, will be coming out tomorrow. Breaking with tradition, taking on a

:42:10.:42:16.

female coach. Andrew Castle has joined us here. He grind it out and

:42:17.:42:21.

played a really good tie-break, didn't he? Yes, to come back in that

:42:22.:42:31.

situation is not easy. We have said this a lot, he is 24 years old now.

:42:32.:42:39.

This guy is gifted. We saw the way he threaded that back down the line,

:42:40.:42:42.

I don't know what goes on in his head but I know that he is gifted,

:42:43.:42:47.

he has talent and can get the job done at the highest level. 50, 68 in

:42:48.:42:52.

the world, you can definitely see that. He proved it last year at the

:42:53.:43:00.

US Open. Exactly, will talk about potential, and intellectually I'm

:43:01.:43:04.

sure he looks at it and says I do this well and this well, and I guess

:43:05.:43:10.

so but so much of it comes down to self belief, in your subconscious

:43:11.:43:14.

almost, whether you believe that you should be at a certain level. I

:43:15.:43:22.

think that determines so much of what happens. It is a matter of just

:43:23.:43:30.

how many wins it takes for Dan Evans to see... Why not? Why not me in the

:43:31.:43:36.

top 70 of the world because as we said, he has so much physical

:43:37.:43:38.

talent. top 70 of the world because as we

:43:39.:43:41.

said, You have been reading out some questions from people and we do

:43:42.:43:42.

said, You have been reading out some questions from people and want you

:44:01.:44:04.

Some of those questions are difficult! Keep them coming in, we

:44:05.:44:11.

love to hear from you. Let's look back to what was a glorious French

:44:12.:44:15.

Open for the men and women, but particularly that final four Rafael

:44:16.:44:21.

Nadal. We talked about him but how does Djokovic comeback from that? He

:44:22.:44:27.

has lost five of the last six Grand Slam finals that he has been in. He

:44:28.:44:32.

did everything, he gives everything to get into that position to win a

:44:33.:44:39.

Grand Slam, and somehow it is not happening for him. That is why Boris

:44:40.:44:43.

Becker was brought in to work on the big points. The trouble is for

:44:44.:44:49.

Djokovic, Rafael Nadal is the problem. He is the greatest I have

:44:50.:44:54.

ever seen on a clay court and may be the greatest player ever to play the

:44:55.:45:00.

game. I didn't recognise Djokovic there. Going into that match, he had

:45:01.:45:08.

won the last four on clay? I think he had Rafael Nadal's measure.

:45:09.:45:13.

Djokovic knows how to dismantle his game. We have seen it in number of

:45:14.:45:19.

times, but in the big arena, Djokovic has to look at himself and

:45:20.:45:24.

say, he has got me again and that is depressing, but Djokovic will be

:45:25.:45:29.

back. In some ways I feel he is possibly the favourite for

:45:30.:45:32.

Wimbledon, which Rafael Nadal has struggled with. Who is the

:45:33.:45:39.

favourite, do you think? I think Djokovic. I thought Rafael Nadal

:45:40.:45:45.

would be the favourite because he is playing so well again. He just

:45:46.:45:49.

didn't look at ease on the grass again. I don't know if there is an

:45:50.:45:54.

issue with his knees. Andy Murray hasn't lost on a grass court since

:45:55.:45:59.

2012, why don't we stick with the defending champion? You see it that

:46:00.:46:06.

way? It is really a difficult choice to pick a favourite between those

:46:07.:46:11.

three. It has got to be one of them, I think. Joint favourites. I

:46:12.:46:22.

think Grigor Dimitrov will search through this year. This is one of

:46:23.:46:26.

the old favourites back again, Lleyton Hewitt. 33 years of age now,

:46:27.:46:32.

but still enjoying being out there. He loves competing. Let's hear from

:46:33.:46:38.

him. I was looking earlier today, this is

:46:39.:46:44.

your 15th time here. It is extraordinary, isn't it? I have

:46:45.:46:48.

always enjoyed coming back here and I had a lot of success early in my

:46:49.:46:53.

career here as well so it is one of my favourite stops. When you arrive,

:46:54.:46:59.

everything seems to click. A lot has got to do with the surface and

:47:00.:47:04.

coming onto a grass court. I feel pretty comfortable, it is probably

:47:05.:47:09.

my favourite surface, especially now later in my career. I had a lot of

:47:10.:47:14.

success in the early stage of my career and won it four times. I was

:47:15.:47:22.

reading this morning that you have got metal in your foot from all of

:47:23.:47:26.

the surgeries you have hard and the repair work that has been required

:47:27.:47:31.

over the course of time you have been playing. What keeps you doing

:47:32.:47:38.

this? I still feel motivated. Obviously the majors are big part of

:47:39.:47:42.

it, especially Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Still knowing, I

:47:43.:47:49.

guess, to come through those surgeries, I wasn't sure if I would

:47:50.:47:53.

be able to come out and compete again, especially against the top

:47:54.:47:59.

guys in the world. I had a great time in Brisbane, a tournament I had

:48:00.:48:06.

never won before in Brisbane, and I won against Roger Federer so that

:48:07.:48:12.

gives me a lot of confidence. I suppose you are long-time retired,

:48:13.:48:18.

aren't you? I remember your sun coming out onto the court last year,

:48:19.:48:22.

you're getting a chance for them to enjoy

:48:23.:48:23.

coming out onto the court last year, you're getting a chance for your

:48:24.:48:27.

career as well. Yes, it is a lot of fun. My kids understand what I do.

:48:28.:48:33.

My little boy is five now, he loves all kinds of sport but he loves

:48:34.:48:38.

tennis, so having him come out onto the court is fun. As you said, you

:48:39.:48:43.

are retired for an awfully long time. Those few years where I had

:48:44.:48:50.

five surgeries within four years, I spent a lot of time on the sidelines

:48:51.:48:54.

and that freshens you up mentally. If I wasn't motivated to go out and

:48:55.:49:00.

do the hard work, I wouldn't be here. You are spanning generations.

:49:01.:49:05.

The first time I ever saw you playing was against Andre Agassi,

:49:06.:49:12.

going back 16 years. You have gone through Roger Federer's dominance,

:49:13.:49:17.

then you topped the rankings, then Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray. I expect

:49:18.:49:23.

you are in a position to compare the generations. Yes, I don't think it

:49:24.:49:28.

is an easy question for anyone. Roger Federer was so dominant for so

:49:29.:49:33.

long so to compare anyone to him is difficult because I saw him at his

:49:34.:49:42.

absolute best. He was amazing. Obviously his dominance in Grand

:49:43.:49:50.

Slam finals. Obviously I've played Peter and Andre Agassi, then Rafael

:49:51.:49:54.

Nadal and Roger Federer took the game to a new level. It has been

:49:55.:49:59.

amazing how consistent they have been. He was right at the top of his

:50:00.:50:07.

game in the early 2000s and he was a wonderful competitor. When you think

:50:08.:50:12.

he was playing against the likes of Pete Sampras and that lot, then he

:50:13.:50:16.

moved into the Roger Federer era and went through that, and still loves

:50:17.:50:22.

to play. That is the key. And we love to watch him, so let's join

:50:23.:50:27.

this match. We are going to stay with it through until six o'clock

:50:28.:50:31.

but after that it will go on to the red button.

:50:32.:50:39.

The ultimate competitor, I think is a good way of describing Lleyton

:50:40.:50:43.

Hewitt. Every single point in his long career he has fought for, no

:50:44.:50:46.

matter the state of the match. Didn't have to do too much fighting

:50:47.:51:03.

there. This may well be a tall order for Traver.

:51:04.:51:27.

Step into the unknown for both these two.

:51:28.:51:48.

Traver's first point, the gift. -- a gift. Lleyton Hewitt holds, no

:51:49.:52:14.

damage done to Traver, but it does happen on the first day. The court

:52:15.:52:20.

is so green and fresh that it is slippery. Exactly right, and this is

:52:21.:52:25.

a good example of a guy just trying to dig in and get back into court a

:52:26.:52:31.

little too quickly. Once your legs are out that far from your centre of

:52:32.:52:38.

gravity, you are history. I mentioned, he is a good clay court

:52:39.:52:44.

player, and he reached the semifinal in Portugal. This is a different

:52:45.:52:52.

thing on the grass against one of the great grass court players of all

:52:53.:52:53.

time. Even if he is not quite the beast of

:52:54.:53:08.

old, Lleyton Hewitt, he has found a good bit of his old form.

:53:09.:53:30.

Even when Lleyton Hewitt is not in good form, he is always a threat. He

:53:31.:53:39.

is one of these guys who can conjure good results out of thin air.

:53:40.:54:38.

A decent bit of poke in that serve, when it works.

:54:39.:55:03.

So, the first break point opportunity for Lleyton Hewitt.

:55:04.:55:14.

Yes, it wasn't a bad idea but Hewitt puts pressure on opponents to play

:55:15.:55:16.

close to the lines. A rather feeble looking shot from

:55:17.:55:33.

Traver, and the first break from Lleyton Hewitt. This is Lleyton

:55:34.:55:46.

Hewitt's 15th appearance at Queen's, a four-time champion. Yes, and way

:55:47.:55:52.

back when. Grass court tennis has emerged

:55:53.:56:12.

almost with clay court tennis, they are very similar animals now, and

:56:13.:56:18.

so... Well, there is no such thing as Bonnie -- bunnies on any surface

:56:19.:56:49.

now. Even Ivo Karlovi? wins matches on clay now!

:56:50.:57:19.

Traver will have three chances to break back.

:57:20.:58:49.

A cagey point, played from the baseline. A wasted chance for

:58:50.:58:59.

Traver. Yes, I'm not quite sure how he missed the ball from such a huge

:59:00.:59:04.

margin. Of course, he probably thought, how am I going to win this

:59:05.:59:08.

point because I'm certainly not going to do it by out slicing

:59:09.:59:14.

Hewitt. Still break point. Those break points have come and

:59:15.:59:46.

gone. Hewitt starting to land his first

:59:47.:00:11.

serve. It has been a scrappy old game so far.

:00:12.:00:32.

Very grateful for the hold, just as the sun comes out. Reinforces the

:00:33.:00:43.

break of serve. All is right in Hewitt's world. He has got his loyal

:00:44.:00:53.

band of followers with him. Looking down in the players' box. His wife

:00:54.:01:02.

is there. Tony Roach is there as well, in the cap. Long-time coach

:01:03.:01:15.

Tony Roach. A poem for you! What a great player he was. French Open

:01:16.:01:21.

champion in singles. Won the doubles at dozens of grand slam events. Won

:01:22.:01:26.

Wimbledon five times. The great coach. The coach of Ivan Lendl,

:01:27.:01:38.

Roger Federer. That is a decent stable. It is interesting to watch

:01:39.:01:44.

Lleyton Hewitt play because it was this tournament a couple of years

:01:45.:01:49.

ago when he came back after the operation. He has got a bionic left

:01:50.:01:59.

toe. It does not move. He has lost any mobility. But it now means he

:02:00.:02:04.

can play tennis. This is his second career, given another chance. I am

:02:05.:02:10.

large, he is taking it. -- by and large. Nicely done.

:02:11.:02:19.

It is difficult. I am sure it must be physically demanding on Hewitt

:02:20.:02:29.

when he gets deeper into an event, especially the best of five set

:02:30.:02:30.

events. But over three sets, he is still a

:02:31.:02:35.

rough customer. Let me rephrase that. Over five

:02:36.:03:04.

sets, he is still a rough customer. When you play two, three, four, five

:03:05.:03:11.

set matches, that is when the demands physically start to work on

:03:12.:03:13.

a guy like Hewitt. First game on the board for the

:03:14.:04:21.

Spaniard. An uncharacteristic unforced error from Hewitt off the

:04:22.:04:27.

two hander. That point showed us a little of why he has been so

:04:28.:04:31.

difficult to beat over the years. Make so many returns of serve. Like

:04:32.:04:36.

a backboard. Extraordinary sliding marks on the

:04:37.:05:04.

court. One has gone about 20ft. There is another one! A couple of

:05:05.:05:07.

times he has gone down in that corner. Yeah, the slice serve out

:05:08.:05:15.

wide is creating so much havoc. Again, Gimeno-Traver trying to put

:05:16.:05:18.

on the brakes too quickly. They were different shoes for the

:05:19.:05:45.

grass court season. He is not sure about his footing just yet -- they

:05:46.:05:48.

were different shoes. Of course, Andrew, we were talking

:05:49.:06:18.

earlier about the different skills required to be successful on each of

:06:19.:06:26.

the surfaces and how they have melded into an almost similar planes

:06:27.:06:30.

go daddy back -- playing style. But of course the one constant is

:06:31.:06:46.

that regardless of what surface you are playing on, you have to be able

:06:47.:06:51.

to get around the court. Gimeno-Traver, a guy who is

:06:52.:06:54.

certainly very quick and athletic, he has not played enough on this

:06:55.:07:00.

surface to know when to slide and when to stop. He is struggling

:07:01.:07:08.

because of it right now. Hewitt holds. It is interesting. You talk

:07:09.:07:16.

about the different surfaces becoming quite a lot closer compared

:07:17.:07:23.

to your day. But thinking about Bjorn Borg, going from the French to

:07:24.:07:27.

winning Wimbledon, it was extraordinary. It was such an

:07:28.:07:34.

incredible change, really, from the slow clay courts to the very fast

:07:35.:07:40.

grass courts. As Wimbledon wore on and still does, I think, the Centre

:07:41.:07:48.

Court got slower. As the tournament went on, things became a little bit

:07:49.:07:52.

easier for a baseliner like Bjorn Borg. But of course, the sort of

:07:53.:08:03.

sliding but we used to see all of the time has largely gone out of the

:08:04.:08:10.

game. We see a couple of really long skid marks here. I think it was

:08:11.:08:14.

Jurgen Melzer who laid down most of those tracks today. But it is only

:08:15.:08:18.

when the grass is still quite wet, quite damp, that is when you see

:08:19.:08:26.

guys sliding. They have covers over the court every night. You never

:08:27.:08:31.

show up to the courts and see, it has rained overnight, I will have to

:08:32.:08:39.

slide around. They are always dry. Heroes Gimeno-Traver serving. --

:08:40.:08:42.

here is. Australian. He will try to cut those

:08:43.:10:32.

out as the match goes on. But Ben is the service game, and ace. If you

:10:33.:10:41.

can consistently land the first serve, he has a chance. It is a hard

:10:42.:10:53.

serve to return. Yeah and generally speaking, that is the key to winning

:10:54.:10:57.

on just about any surface. If you can land your first serve, you have

:10:58.:11:01.

a great chance of holding. Gimeno-Traver certainly has to take

:11:02.:11:16.

the chances on Hewitt's second serve. He has been given a few of

:11:17.:11:21.

those that the moment. -- at the moment.

:11:22.:11:30.

He will know. He will get some chances. Hewitt has never been one

:11:31.:11:39.

of these guys that has made 65% of his first serves. He is often down

:11:40.:11:45.

around the 50% mark. When he does get his first serve in, it is very

:11:46.:11:47.

effective. Well done. First little cry of, come

:11:48.:12:08.

on! Hewitt perhaps allowed Gimeno-Traver to stay in the rally.

:12:09.:12:14.

Of course, the Aussie covers the net so well. Can just hit a defensive

:12:15.:12:18.

volley and say, all right, what are you going to do now?

:12:19.:13:06.

There is a hole for Hewitt. He is moving through the first set fairly

:13:07.:13:16.

comfortably. Not having to do too much at the moment. Not at his very

:13:17.:13:21.

best, but good enough to be keeping Gimeno-Traver at bay. He is 28 now,

:13:22.:13:37.

Gimeno-Traver. World ranking 99. Danger of slipping out of the top

:13:38.:13:41.

100. Four out of the five seasons, he has finished within the top 75. A

:13:42.:13:46.

player of some quality. The success has been built on the red surfaces.

:13:47.:13:53.

He has twice played here before and has twice lost in the first round. A

:13:54.:14:03.

shiny new racket will help. That is the hope, anyway.

:14:04.:14:11.

The tennis gods did not really looked down on Gimeno-Traver that

:14:12.:14:19.

favourably. It is a difficult first round match for him. Hewitt carries

:14:20.:14:28.

a lot of the things Gimeno-Traver does well. He is a power player, he

:14:29.:14:35.

likes to go for flashy winners. Of course, Hewitt is so great at

:14:36.:14:48.

defending. Knox a lot of them back. His greater experience on this

:14:49.:14:52.

surface allows him to outmanoeuvre him. New racket for the Spaniard and

:14:53.:14:57.

new balls. Done by the bounce. Once again,

:14:58.:15:17.

bounced off the service line and checked.

:15:18.:15:30.

We have put men on the moon, can't we come up with a substance, a white

:15:31.:15:36.

looking substance, something that does not make the ball stop on top

:15:37.:15:47.

of it? You are not a conspiracy theorist then? We made it look like

:15:48.:15:52.

we landed men on the moon. That is an achievement in itself.

:15:53.:16:00.

Lovely touch at the end. A well crafted point by Gimeno-Traver.

:16:01.:16:15.

He gives it a SWAT. The speed gun is coming and going. Sometimes it

:16:16.:16:58.

works, sometimes it doesn't. Two big serves. That was 131mph. Still got a

:16:59.:17:06.

chance in this first set, Gimeno-Traver. I think it was with

:17:07.:17:15.

Elliott Gould, the film about them faking it Chris at before my time

:17:16.:17:22.

sorry. That was the 70s! -- about them faking it? Hewitt serving for

:17:23.:17:31.

the first set. There are people at home screaming at the television

:17:32.:17:38.

set, stop rambling and that the name of the film was Capricorn 1.

:17:39.:18:12.

Wow. Now is the time. Lleyton Hewitt really I am sure is feeling just a

:18:13.:18:22.

bit of pressure. If he does not hold serve this game, Gimeno-Traver is

:18:23.:18:25.

starting to find his feet a little. Just giving Hewitt pause for thought

:18:26.:18:56.

here. The skies are darkening just a

:18:57.:19:33.

little bit. Playing these big points well.

:19:34.:19:55.

Gimeno-Traver, I don't think he challenged or clear now. The umpire

:19:56.:20:01.

is explaining that to him. UMPIRE: Gimeno-Traver is challenging

:20:02.:20:13.

the call. The ball was called in. Lleyton Hewitt is explaining that.

:20:14.:20:17.

He said, you have to challenge in a timely manner. Gimeno-Traver had a

:20:18.:20:21.

long look and a long think about things.

:20:22.:20:31.

Hewitt has the first set and he has said fairly comfortably. Signs that

:20:32.:20:37.

Gimeno-Traver was beginning to find his feet. Moving on fairly nicely,

:20:38.:20:43.

winning the first set 6-3. Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament

:20:44.:20:45.

and Wimbledon and the World Cup. What really separates the great from

:20:46.:21:00.

the blood? Style? Of course. -- from the good? Flare across a -- flare?

:21:01.:21:11.

Passion? Learn from your mistakes? Always think about what you missed.

:21:12.:21:16.

Never be satisfied with what you have done. Whatever you do, do it

:21:17.:21:24.

with your heart. Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard! I never thought

:21:25.:21:29.

about what I could get out of football, I just wanted to play.

:21:30.:21:39.

SUE BARKER: Gary Lineker will be here on Wednesday night with a full

:21:40.:21:44.

preview of the tournament. That is Wednesday night at 10:35pm on BBC

:21:45.:21:51.

One HD. Not long to wait. The preview on Wednesday, the tournament

:21:52.:21:56.

starts on Thursday. Are you excited about the US's

:21:57.:22:02.

chances in the World Cup? Not entirely. Thanks are asking. You are

:22:03.:22:09.

welcome. You must be very excited about England's chances of course!

:22:10.:22:16.

As a British citizen, right? Anyway, here we are. Hewitt and

:22:17.:22:25.

Gimeno-Traver. Let us leave this crazy football chat and move on.

:22:26.:22:30.

Hewitt took the first set with some comfort. But never really gave us

:22:31.:22:36.

the impression he was firing on all cylinders. Gimeno-Traver not

:22:37.:22:42.

offering an enormous amount of resistance.

:22:43.:23:33.

Hewitt, an enormous net cord. He will need fortune against

:23:34.:23:39.

Gimeno-Traver. Three break points at the start of

:23:40.:23:50.

the second set. And very, very easily taken. Lleyton

:23:51.:24:09.

Hewitt has the break at the start of the second set. This match may

:24:10.:24:19.

quickly slip away from Querrey. -- from Gimeno-Traver. The only thing

:24:20.:24:26.

that might stop Lleyton Hewitt's progress is rain. My friend says no

:24:27.:24:32.

rain until nine o'clock. You have to believe that, don't you? -- my

:24:33.:24:38.

phone. It is a little on the dreary side wall of a sudden. Still warm.

:24:39.:24:49.

The winner of this will play Feliciano Lopez. Or Lajovic. They

:24:50.:24:57.

are on court after this. It is funny. Gimeno-Traver appeared

:24:58.:25:22.

to be showing signs of getting into the match towards the end of the

:25:23.:25:26.

first set. Did not break through. Essentially, he donated the first

:25:27.:25:31.

service game in the second. Now he is in real trouble.

:25:32.:26:02.

You can see why he is comfortable on clay courts as well. He has got some

:26:03.:26:44.

power in that shoulder. Well played. The show pony finish.

:26:45.:27:58.

It was. I like this. Nice touch. Not quite the extraordinary shot of

:27:59.:28:04.

crime on fees. But getting there. -- shot of Gael Monfils.

:28:05.:28:18.

Just opened up the court. The wide serve has been money for Lleyton

:28:19.:28:29.

Hewitt today. So effective. The slice out on the deuce court.

:28:30.:29:02.

Hewitt holds. There was half a chance for Gimeno-Traver but he

:29:03.:29:10.

could not take it. I can see just a few umbrellas starting to go up. Not

:29:11.:29:18.

for the sun anymore. Don't say a word.

:29:19.:31:01.

An important hold for Gimeno-Traver, he had lost second service game and

:31:02.:31:09.

this set, it would near enough have been all over. I think the umbrellas

:31:10.:31:10.

have gone down again. What do you think Lleyton Hewitt is

:31:11.:31:17.

capable What do you think Lleyton Hewitt is

:31:18.:31:24.

of in tennis and Grand Slams, perhaps in Wimbledon as well? How

:31:25.:31:28.

deep can he go? He is a danger man. He gets a good

:31:29.:31:34.

draw, you can get through to the quarterfinals, thereabouts. I think

:31:35.:31:41.

perhaps any chances of him winning Wimbledon have probably escaped him.

:31:42.:31:52.

They do not look too concerned, not looking to the skies, gambling into

:31:53.:31:57.

walkie-talkies, it is all fine. Lleyton Hewitt, years 33, I always

:31:58.:32:01.

think of him as older. He has been around for such a long time, and

:32:02.:32:04.

there are players who play up to 35 with some success, but it seems to

:32:05.:32:08.

me because of injuries he has had three is quite an old 33.

:32:09.:32:12.

Well, he has said some very nice things about you, to!

:32:13.:32:18.

I am just saying! Well, you first started on tour at

:32:19.:32:25.

age 15, I think. -- he first started. He has been around quite a

:32:26.:32:31.

long while. As you say, ye has used his body, he is not the most

:32:32.:32:36.

powerful player, he does not have a big forehand, nor an especially big

:32:37.:32:43.

serve. He has had to win by grinding.

:32:44.:32:47.

You can always guarantee when you see someone does not have a massive

:32:48.:32:56.

serve that they will slam down a ace.

:32:57.:33:02.

He does have a very effective first serve when it does go in, he wins a

:33:03.:33:05.

huge percentage of the points, but he doesn't hit 60 or 65% of those

:33:06.:33:14.

bonds, so he has to often work. -- those bombs.

:33:15.:33:20.

But his court knowledge, his movement is very good. Gimeno-Traver

:33:21.:33:27.

down on the grass again. Hewitt's ability...

:33:28.:33:31.

That looks like me on a grass court, not having a really happy

:33:32.:33:34.

time. Nothing here for Gimeno-Traver, and

:33:35.:34:01.

I think he is just losing a bit of confidence in his footing.

:34:02.:34:31.

There we are, a hold to love for Lleyton Hewitt. You talking about

:34:32.:34:43.

his percentage of first serves, and as you said he has never been a guy

:34:44.:34:49.

in the 60s or 70s. 52% at the mode for Lleyton Hewitt, Gimeno-Traver is

:34:50.:34:56.

at 71%, but it is just a means of starting a rally, the first serve

:34:57.:35:00.

for Hewitt, once he is in a rally he is damaging.

:35:01.:35:07.

Yes, of the serves he has put into play, you has won 18 of those

:35:08.:35:09.

points, so he is dominant. That is such a typical late in

:35:10.:35:28.

Hewitt defensive point. He had no right to even think he was in that

:35:29.:35:34.

rally. Gimeno-Traver was jerking him all around the place, yet Hewitt

:35:35.:35:39.

just managed to put that slice into an awkward position.

:35:40.:35:42.

There is never an lost cause for Lleyton Hewitt.

:35:43.:35:45.

No, sir. And all things going against the

:35:46.:35:55.

Spaniard now. You know, the two major assets that

:35:56.:36:27.

Lleyton Hewitt has always had - incredible court speed and

:36:28.:36:32.

rock-solid competitiveness. Just focus, he almost never gives you a

:36:33.:36:37.

point. He might miss from time to time, but almost never will he give

:36:38.:36:44.

you mental errors where you can just see he has left the arena.

:36:45.:37:17.

Well, the lob was too good, and Gimeno-Traver hits the backboard.

:37:18.:37:45.

Even Lleyton Hewitt can't run that one down.

:37:46.:38:16.

That is a difficult shot. With the sort of grip that Gimeno-Traver uses

:38:17.:38:26.

on the forehand, the heavy western forehand, when the ball skips

:38:27.:38:29.

through the court like that it is very difficult to time it precisely.

:38:30.:38:38.

Yes, that was a nicely played poorly. -- volley.

:38:39.:39:01.

Just cannot see out of this game, any lingering hopes that

:39:02.:39:08.

Gimeno-Traver has. A beautiful angle from

:39:09.:39:44.

Gimeno-Traver, he has the holder, jets are Schmeichel still just one

:39:45.:39:52.

break of serve adrift. -- he has the hold, still just one break of serve

:39:53.:39:56.

adrift. Hanging in there, Gimeno-Traver. Just.

:39:57.:40:13.

Creating the angle... Yes, and that is not an easy shot to

:40:14.:40:29.

execute from that spot in the court. Not just on cloud watch, but there

:40:30.:40:33.

are some very dark ones appearing now.

:40:34.:40:43.

Atmospheric skies. Don't worry about things you have no

:40:44.:40:46.

control over, Andrew. I am a warrior. -- worrier.

:40:47.:41:00.

Well, stop! You have a sunny American's disposition. Your can do

:41:01.:41:03.

attitude. Hewitt, still with the break,

:41:04.:41:11.

serving, 3-2 in the second set. He will challenge that one. You

:41:12.:41:41.

know, of course, it is difficult, guys come here and they have hit on

:41:42.:41:47.

grass for three or four days, maybe.

:41:48.:41:54.

And, of course, we did have quite a bit of rain last week, so they may

:41:55.:42:01.

not even have hit that many times on grass.

:42:02.:42:04.

Thankfully, the calendar changes next year, I believe, where we have

:42:05.:42:09.

another week in between Paris and Wimbledon.

:42:10.:42:20.

Now, that did look painful, actually.

:42:21.:42:28.

In the hips, or the groin, the half splits.

:42:29.:42:43.

His right knee, actually. No, that is a hit thing. -- hip.

:42:44.:42:58.

Tennis players, by and large, have very tight hips, so if you make this

:42:59.:43:04.

step like that, they can really be vulnerable.

:43:05.:43:09.

-- if you make a misstep like that. I am not sure he is really enjoying

:43:10.:43:12.

this experience, Gimeno-Traver. Another hold for Lleyton Hewitt.

:43:13.:43:41.

Closer to the finish line. Again, he is giving Gimeno-Traver

:43:42.:43:46.

opportunities. He is not at his very best, but the Spaniard unable to

:43:47.:43:49.

take those chances. And Hewitt has the scent right now,

:43:50.:44:52.

doesn't he? Now is the time to get the second break.

:44:53.:44:58.

Yes, looking for a quick finish, get in before any possible threat of

:44:59.:45:00.

rain and get it done, get a rest. Again, the 1-2 works for

:45:01.:45:08.

Gimeno-Traver. Well, you had to improvise there,

:45:09.:45:36.

Lleyton Hewitt. The bones just got away from him. Yes, and it looked as

:45:37.:45:40.

though it got away from Gimeno-Traver on the following shot.

:45:41.:45:51.

-- the balance. -- bounce. It is a .4 double break.

:45:52.:45:59.

This time the net cord is less friendly to the Australian.

:46:00.:46:40.

Good return, some hard-hitting from Gimeno-Traver.

:46:41.:47:31.

Just wide. So, Gimeno-Traver keeps just about in touch.

:47:32.:47:44.

Yes, he has looked down and out so many times, hasn't he, throughout

:47:45.:47:55.

these first two sets? Yet he is still hanging around, like a bad

:47:56.:47:59.

smell. He spent a lot of time on the ground, as well, Gimeno-Traver.

:48:00.:48:05.

Let's see some of his favourites. He has not done himself any harm,

:48:06.:48:08.

which is the main thing, though -- which is the main thing, though he

:48:09.:48:15.

came close to it. These two were on the line, this one

:48:16.:48:20.

certainly not. This one was less... No, that one was routine.

:48:21.:48:26.

We missed out his finest. We are sparing his blushes. Again, it just

:48:27.:48:33.

stresses how difficult it is for players adjusting to this surface.

:48:34.:48:38.

We know that he is a very, very good clay-court player, Gimeno-Traver,

:48:39.:48:43.

but you come from the clay, where you are able to slide, it is part of

:48:44.:48:48.

the game, and here it sort of can be in the opening days, but it is not

:48:49.:48:54.

really. Gimeno-Traver is not able to find himself out of their in a

:48:55.:48:59.

comfortable way on his feet. Yes, today he is a completely different

:49:00.:49:04.

animal to the sort of tennis we will see four days from now, when the

:49:05.:49:08.

court will be dry. And the footing so much better.

:49:09.:49:16.

Lleyton Hewitt with new balls, serving, 4-3.

:49:17.:50:09.

This time he decides to cut it in behind Gimeno-Traver.

:50:10.:50:17.

The perfect play in these positions, go behind the player as much as

:50:18.:50:25.

possible. What an impressive service came that was from Lleyton Hewitt.

:50:26.:50:29.

He is just a game away, perhaps, from a place in the second round.

:50:30.:50:36.

Right on the one-hour mark. A fairly tidy performance from

:50:37.:50:37.

Lleyton Hewitt thus far. There is a bit of noise up there, a

:50:38.:51:14.

lot of people turning around, spectators. Some action in the bar.

:51:15.:52:24.

Cannot afford any of those. Yes, it has not been a good day thus

:52:25.:52:34.

far. Gimeno-Traver, unable to stand up, unable to time his ground

:52:35.:52:40.

strokes. Picked up nicely for Lleyton Hewitt

:52:41.:52:44.

and brings him to the edge of a place in the second round. That

:52:45.:52:46.

brings him to match point. And the end comes quickly, it comes

:52:47.:53:16.

to an Australian cry, come on! The Lleyton camp is happy and

:53:17.:53:19.

Lleyton Hewitt to a straightforward win in straight sets. Safely

:53:20.:53:21.

through. Four times champion here, and the

:53:22.:53:34.

appreciative veterans, as well. He always gives every effort. Nothing

:53:35.:53:42.

really to celebrate for Daniel Gimeno-Traver, not too comfortable

:53:43.:53:47.

on the grass and that was a brief stay. He will look ahead to the rest

:53:48.:53:52.

of the grasscourt season, perhaps go and find somewhere to work on his

:53:53.:53:56.

game. He could not adapt and threaten Lleyton Hewitt, who goes

:53:57.:54:03.

through to play Feliciano Lopez, next up on Centre Court here.

:54:04.:54:09.

Straightforward, 6-3, 6-3, the winner.

:54:10.:54:16.

STUDIO: Well, Lleyton may have seen what time our transmission ends

:54:17.:54:26.

because we are coming off the air in five minutes.

:54:27.:54:28.

It has been an entertaining day on the opening day of the Aegon

:54:29.:54:33.

Championships, good news for James Ward who came through against Blaz

:54:34.:54:36.

Rola Slovenia, a player he beat in the third round of the French Open.

:54:37.:54:41.

He was through in straight sets today. He is the root of the second

:54:42.:54:47.

round to face Grigor Dimitrov. -- he is through. He will be back on court

:54:48.:54:53.

against him, and Dan Evans came through a marathon match against the

:54:54.:54:57.

veteran Jurgen Melzer, winning a very impressive third set tie-break

:54:58.:55:01.

to go through to the second round to face Kevin Anderson. A good day for

:55:02.:55:05.

all of the Britons out on Centre Court today.

:55:06.:55:11.

Dan Evans and James Ward, both wildcards in the Championships, are

:55:12.:55:14.

safely through. And there is confirmation of the

:55:15.:55:18.

results and, indeed, Lleyton Hewitt's victory.

:55:19.:55:20.

We will hopefully you're from him in a moment.

:55:21.:55:23.

We have more tennis coming, Feliciano Lopez, that will be on the

:55:24.:55:27.

red button. Lleyton Hewitt is now with Andrew

:55:28.:55:29.

Castle. Congratulations, you said you like

:55:30.:55:35.

playing at this place? Yes, I love it, it is about my 15th time now.

:55:36.:55:41.

It is one of my favourite stops throughout the year, I love these

:55:42.:55:44.

grass courts, they are some of the best in the world and we are

:55:45.:55:47.

fortunate to play on them and it is a privilege to come out here.

:55:48.:55:50.

When are you going to start playing your age?

:55:51.:55:55.

I don't know, I have a few young kids now and I have to try and keep

:55:56.:55:59.

up with them, so that keeps me fit. What do you enjoy most about the

:56:00.:56:01.

game? Beating someone like that?

:56:02.:56:06.

Beating anyone, it doesn't matter who it is. Obviously I have come

:56:07.:56:10.

through quite a few injuries in the last seven years now, I am still

:56:11.:56:13.

motivated to go out and do the hard work and I enjoy this time of the

:56:14.:56:18.

year. This time in London is one of my favourite months. And many years

:56:19.:56:24.

do you think you have lost, you're really just 33, but do you think you

:56:25.:56:28.

are really a 27-year-old tennis player?

:56:29.:56:31.

I am not sure. Physically I did not pound myself into the ground in the

:56:32.:56:36.

last five or six years because I had surgery and I what I were tied to

:56:37.:56:38.

come back from that. Grass is one of my favourite

:56:39.:56:41.

surfaces and I am still motivated to come out here and it did hard not to

:56:42.:56:46.

be motivated to play tenants like this. If Lopez wins, do you have a

:56:47.:56:51.

game plan for him question might he is a big left-hander with a good

:56:52.:56:55.

serve and volley game for grass, and in the past I have matched up pretty

:56:56.:56:58.

well against him. I just have to go out and execute.

:56:59.:57:02.

This question is from left field, but I am sure you have had a good

:57:03.:57:05.

serve and volley game for grass, and in the past I have matched up pretty

:57:06.:57:08.

well against him. I just have to go out and execute. This question is

:57:09.:57:11.

from left-field, but I am sure you have had daft questions before. I

:57:12.:57:13.

have heard your name mentioned for the Andy Murray coaching role, is

:57:14.:57:15.

that nonsense? That is the first I have heard of

:57:16.:57:18.

it! I am still playing, that is for sure.

:57:19.:57:20.

Late in Hewitt, good to see you again, congratulations.

:57:21.:57:23.

It is great to see him fit and healthy again. He has had his

:57:24.:57:26.

struggles over the years, but Lleyton Hewitt is safely through.

:57:27.:57:31.

We are coming off the air in a moment on BBC Two, but a lot to look

:57:32.:57:35.

forward to tomorrow, Dan Evans on Centre Court at 12:30pm.

:57:36.:57:39.

You can watch the start of that on the BBC Red Button, we will be on

:57:40.:57:45.

the air at 1pm. Marin Cilic, then Grigor Dimitrov, the fourth seed, up

:57:46.:57:50.

against James Ward. Just very briefly, it has been a fantastic day

:57:51.:57:57.

as far as British tennis is concerned.

:57:58.:57:59.

Good performances from James Ward, and particularly Dan Evans to come

:58:00.:58:03.

back after losing that second set, break down in the third, and then

:58:04.:58:08.

coming back against a veteran like Melzer, great match.

:58:09.:58:13.

And looking forward against the Grigor Dimitrov match? Yes,

:58:14.:58:17.

absolutely, hopefully these guys can continue.

:58:18.:58:20.

Sometimes it is difficult to play two great matches in a row. Evans

:58:21.:58:27.

played terrific tennis. Amelie Mauresmo will be in town

:58:28.:58:31.

tomorrow, as well, with her first official day working with Andy

:58:32.:58:33.

Murray. We are back at 1pm on BBC Two

:58:34.:58:38.

tomorrow, it has been a good day for British tennis here. Goodbye.

:58:39.:58:41.
