feeling of a grand journey around Europe. Come with me on a

:00:36.:00:38.

feeling of a grand journey around Europe. Come with fantastic tennis

:00:39.:00:45.

tour. From here in London, we go to the Balkans and the first stop is

:00:46.:00:49.

Bulgaria. Grigor Dimitrov seen by many as the future of men's tennis

:00:50.:00:54.

will be sure to get the pulse is rising on and off the court. From

:00:55.:00:59.

there, it is a quick jaunt to the Czech Republic where we find number

:01:00.:01:04.

two seed Tomas Berdych, the hard-hitting man who is always a

:01:05.:01:07.

danger on grass. Our whistle-stop tour takes us to Croatia were Marin

:01:08.:01:13.

Cilic is waiting. The 2012 champion won by default when David Nalbandian

:01:14.:01:19.

was disqualified. He would love to prove he is a worthy champion.

:01:20.:01:24.

Finally we come back to swinging London where James Ward will be

:01:25.:01:26.

hoping the home crowd can carry him into round three. And the great

:01:27.:01:33.

thing about this tour, you do not have to leave the comfort of your

:01:34.:01:37.

own home. We bring it all to you live from the Queen's Club. You do

:01:38.:01:42.

not have to travel far when you have weather like this either. It is set

:01:43.:01:47.

fair of the week. Very attractive matches on Centre Court at the

:01:48.:01:48.

moment. Rain stopped play yesterday so there

:01:49.:02:01.

is one match to be completed. Dan Evans came to a thrilling match

:02:02.:02:09.

yesterday beating Jurgen Melzer. The rising star of the game, Grigor

:02:10.:02:13.

Dimitrov, is up against James Ward. We are looking forward to that. We

:02:14.:02:19.

are not there on BBC Two until 6pm. Then we are on the red button.

:02:20.:02:26.

Andy Murray has been here today. I spotted his team as I arrived at

:02:27.:02:33.

9am. He was here early, getting another couple of practices in. No

:02:34.:02:38.

sign of his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo. Leon Smith is there. He

:02:39.:02:48.

has been out practising with the player who started the process to

:02:49.:02:54.

become a British citizen. He is looking to become a British citizen

:02:55.:03:02.

from Slovenia, Aljaz Bedene. Just to let you know, behind us, it has gone

:03:03.:03:11.

1-1. John and Peter are with me. No sign of Amelie Mauresmo. She said, I

:03:12.:03:17.

am travelling on Tuesday morning. Her first appearance is going to be

:03:18.:03:22.

on match day. Leaving it a bit tight. Very casual, strolling. It is

:03:23.:03:28.

going to be lots of photographers. Do you think she has any idea what

:03:29.:03:33.

she is in for? She has no idea. It is going to be very interesting. It

:03:34.:03:38.

is amazing it has become such an international story. We make a big

:03:39.:03:43.

thing of it because Andy is the first British men's champion at

:03:44.:03:47.

Wimbledon for so long. It is a big international story. It is. It is

:03:48.:03:53.

the first time one of the very best players has chosen a woman as his

:03:54.:03:57.

coach. It will be interesting to see. I guess what they have just

:03:58.:04:01.

said is that it is just through Wimbledon for the moment. The

:04:02.:04:08.

pressure is on. Yeah X no kidding. How do you follow what happened last

:04:09.:04:15.

year? We have got great matches. Grigor Dimitrov is the rising star

:04:16.:04:18.

of the game. He has been talked about for so long. This is his

:04:19.:04:25.

little warm up routine. His new coach, we know he is a very tough

:04:26.:04:30.

task master. He will get him fit and ready for matches. He will. We were

:04:31.:04:36.

chatting yesterday about the French Open. Disappointing loss to Ivo

:04:37.:04:41.

Karlovic. He said he was served off the court. They did not panic about

:04:42.:04:47.

it too much. Having said that, he is desperate for matches this week.

:04:48.:04:51.

First round loss at the French. He needs to do very well at Queen's.

:04:52.:04:58.

This was last year. He proved he can play on the. He is a natural grass

:04:59.:05:03.

court player. He is a good bloke. -- on the grass. He is very

:05:04.:05:11.

charismatic. He is one heck of a player. Absolutely. We have been

:05:12.:05:16.

waiting for this breakthrough. He was world junior champion and

:05:17.:05:19.

everyone thought he was the next coming. It has taken a little while.

:05:20.:05:26.

Baby Federer. I do not think he liked that. He has improved a lot.

:05:27.:05:33.

It was right about the period when he reached the semifinals here that

:05:34.:05:38.

he made the big jump. That is a heck of a rise. His highest has been 12.

:05:39.:05:43.

He is the youngest player in the world's top 20. When we talk about

:05:44.:05:48.

the big four who are now with Federer in his 30s, Rafa, Novak

:05:49.:05:57.

Djokovic in their 30s. We're waiting for the next players to emerge. He

:05:58.:06:02.

is leading the way. You have got to have consistency to catch the big

:06:03.:06:05.

guns. The disappointing French Open, disappointing Wimbledon last

:06:06.:06:10.

year, Grigor Dimitrov. You want to see him getting to the quarterfinals

:06:11.:06:14.

consistently because he is good enough to do that. Mentally, he has

:06:15.:06:18.

lapses. They are working on that. He has had a good year this year other

:06:19.:06:22.

than the French Open and I think he is a potential grand slam winner and

:06:23.:06:26.

I think it will happen sooner rather than later. On young players, there

:06:27.:06:30.

is a young player, Dominic Thiem, from Austria. Fine work here is a

:06:31.:06:38.

very good shotmaker. He is more raw, a year or two behind Grigor

:06:39.:06:43.

Dimitrov. He has a huge serve. Good athlete. Has a lot of potential. You

:06:44.:06:53.

do not want to use it too often, potential, because it puts a lot of

:06:54.:06:57.

pressure on people. Of course, let us face it, your ability to hit a

:06:58.:07:04.

forehand or a backhand really pales in importance when you compare it to

:07:05.:07:10.

how you think. What goes on between the ears? That is what determines

:07:11.:07:14.

whether these guys are champions. Grigor Dimitrov, probably the most

:07:15.:07:17.

charismatic of the young guys coming up, but perhaps that makes him a

:07:18.:07:24.

little more emotional. That would give rise to some up Sundance. Great

:07:25.:07:29.

to watch, Grigor Dimitrov. His opponent today, James Ward. He had a

:07:30.:07:35.

good win yesterday. Very good. He has played good matches recently.

:07:36.:07:38.

Qualified at the French Open which was fabulous and played well. He is

:07:39.:07:42.

maturing. As he said in the papers, he said, it does not matter what age

:07:43.:07:46.

you finally get it, every player is different. He is now getting what it

:07:47.:07:52.

is like to start going for these tournaments. He played a very good

:07:53.:07:57.

match yesterday. This is not an easy first match for Grigor Dimitrov to

:07:58.:08:00.

come in again someone who has played a lot of matches recently.

:08:01.:08:04.

Qualifying the French Open and coming here and he has a match under

:08:05.:08:08.

his belt, he is a confident player. He has a big serve, he has weapons,

:08:09.:08:15.

James Ward. Against a guy who does not quite know his way around a

:08:16.:08:19.

grass court, James Ward is very dangerous. Grigor Dimitrov though is

:08:20.:08:24.

another matter because he is so comfortable on the surface and he

:08:25.:08:28.

makes a lot of balls and it will put more owners on James Ward to attack.

:08:29.:08:39.

-- bonus. He has pulled off big victories. He has proved he can pull

:08:40.:08:44.

off the surprises. Dan Evans yesterday, talk about James Ward's

:08:45.:08:49.

victory. Against Jurgen Melzer, a very experienced player. He finished

:08:50.:08:53.

it off in style, didn't he? The tie-breaker in the third set, no

:08:54.:08:57.

sign of nerves. He raised the level of his game. It was very impressive

:08:58.:09:02.

because he had a wobble in the tie-break in the second. He went on

:09:03.:09:06.

a break in the third. You would have thought he was going away. Jurgen

:09:07.:09:10.

Melzer was getting into his head. But he did not. It was so impressive

:09:11.:09:13.

to come back. Jurgen Melzer was giving him the mind games and the

:09:14.:09:20.

stair. Dan Evans was doing his stuff and getting on with it. Very

:09:21.:09:26.

talented. Talented, he can pull off great shots from nowhere. He is

:09:27.:09:33.

appearing more involved harm. He is very silky stroke maker -- appearing

:09:34.:09:45.

more harm. He is a rough customer. He has got to play Kevin Anderson.

:09:46.:09:50.

It is not easy. Get a racket on the ball! He is a real pro. He does his

:09:51.:09:56.

stuff every week. Very consistent. Very hard wake. Not going to make it

:09:57.:10:03.

easy, as he shouldn't. It is another look at down to see how we can go up

:10:04.:10:07.

against another top-class player. It will be interesting to see how he

:10:08.:10:13.

reacts to see whether he goes out there and is physically OK and

:10:14.:10:17.

mentally not satisfied with what he did yesterday. He has got to look at

:10:18.:10:20.

it as another match to prove what he can do. He proved it at the U.S.

:10:21.:10:26.

Open. He certainly can do it. Marin Cilic, first appearance at these

:10:27.:10:29.

championships. He won it in controversial style two years ago

:10:30.:10:32.

when David Nalbandian got disqualified from the final. Every

:10:33.:10:40.

time I see it it hurts more and more. But move is worthy of the

:10:41.:10:48.

World Cup. But was a good dive after the fact! It was a sad way to be

:10:49.:10:54.

handed the trophy. He wants to prove he was a worthy winner. He loves the

:10:55.:11:03.

service chilly surface. He has a very tough draw. His whole section

:11:04.:11:06.

is the toughest -- he loves this surface. He is so good on this. He

:11:07.:11:12.

loves it at Queen's. Dangerous player. Really enjoying working with

:11:13.:11:18.

Goran He has had a very good year. He will look at having a chance at

:11:19.:11:27.

it. There we go. There is Amelie Mauresmo! We were told she was not

:11:28.:11:31.

going to be here but yet she is. I'm sure she will be asked for numerous

:11:32.:11:35.

interviews during the day. Hopefully we will be able to talk to her at

:11:36.:11:39.

some point as well. She gave a fascinating press conference in

:11:40.:11:43.

Paris when it was announced and she is such a good thinker of the game

:11:44.:11:50.

and I think... Andy does not do anything without thinking it through

:11:51.:11:53.

and planning and knowing what will work for him. She mentioned that it

:11:54.:11:58.

happened weeks ago that they had phone conversations. Obviously he

:11:59.:12:01.

likes what she is talking about. That is what you need sometimes. He

:12:02.:12:06.

knows his going backwards. He needs someone to talk him through when

:12:07.:12:10.

things get difficult. I agree. So much of being a coach these days is

:12:11.:12:15.

not about strategy or teaching them technique. It is about making a

:12:16.:12:20.

player comfortable and Andy needs to find someone he is comfortable

:12:21.:12:22.

spending time with and also discussing things with. She was a

:12:23.:12:29.

great player. She worked things out. She came through and won Wimbledon.

:12:30.:12:35.

She has proven herself on the big occasions. With the top players, it

:12:36.:12:40.

is like Novak Djokovic with Boris Becker. Top players always looked

:12:41.:12:43.

like they are completely confident about themselves the whole time.

:12:44.:12:47.

Even the top players have doubts occasionally. When you are in Grand

:12:48.:12:50.

Slam is, to have someone who has been there and done it in your

:12:51.:12:54.

corner that might be able to give you a little bit of extra confidence

:12:55.:12:58.

before big matches, I think it is key. That is a nice scene there.

:12:59.:13:05.

Talking to the coach who took her to the Grand Slam 's. If Andy thought

:13:06.:13:10.

about her first, if someone suggested her... ? He said he had

:13:11.:13:15.

made a short list of female coaches and she was obviously on the list.

:13:16.:13:19.

We would love to know who the rest were and how long the list was. You

:13:20.:13:29.

were on the list, right? Of course! Someone like Martina Navratilova

:13:30.:13:34.

maybe. Who knows. That was the decision Andy made. She will be out

:13:35.:13:40.

on the practice court. He is out on court at 2pm. I am sure we will have

:13:41.:13:45.

our cameras there to see her in action with Andy. Interesting

:13:46.:13:49.

appointment. One other person to talk about, Tomas Berdych. He is a

:13:50.:13:56.

danger, Wimbledon finalist. But he can worry anyone on a given day. He

:13:57.:14:05.

was out with Andy yesterday. He is the sort of player no one talks

:14:06.:14:09.

about. You should talk about him because he got to the finals of

:14:10.:14:13.

Wimbledon. He got to the quarters of the French Open. Did not play

:14:14.:14:16.

particular well in the quarters. But he is a whizz around and dangerous.

:14:17.:14:22.

No one ever really puts him in the mix -- he is always around. He has

:14:23.:14:26.

all of the game and he is quietly plodding along and he is a danger

:14:27.:14:31.

here and at Wimbledon. Apart from that year when he got to the semis

:14:32.:14:36.

in Paris and the finals in Wimbledon, he has almost become one

:14:37.:14:44.

of these guys who is Mr Consistent. When he first came on the tour, he

:14:45.:14:49.

was wild and would win a tournament and then lose early. Now he is

:14:50.:14:53.

completely the opposite. He is just a machine. Those ahead and gets

:14:54.:14:58.

through to the quarters, semis, but has struggled to beat the big four.

:14:59.:15:12.

who hasn't! Such an interest -- interesting draw. If they all come

:15:13.:15:16.

through, fascinating matchups. The top quarter is phenomenal. Stanislas

:15:17.:15:22.

Wawrinka, Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Sam Querrey. Then you have

:15:23.:15:30.

Andy. A lot of world-class players who want to do well and win the

:15:31.:15:34.

title and get ready for Wimbledon. You look at them and you go, there

:15:35.:15:38.

are a number of players, they could all do serious damage at Wimbledon.

:15:39.:15:42.

If you want to make your comments about who you think might do well

:15:43.:15:46.

here or if you have any questions you want to ask John, Peter or Andy,

:15:47.:15:54.

contact the team. #bbctennis. That is how you can contact the team. We

:15:55.:15:59.

are looking forward to some great tennis. Not far away, it is the big

:16:00.:16:04.

one. Here they come. So much pressure, so

:16:05.:16:10.

much expectation. It is the title all of the players want to win. A

:16:11.:16:14.

lot of the guys are friends off the court. The moment they step out by,

:16:15.:16:23.

forget it. Hugely exciting. Wimbledon is absolutely incredible.

:16:24.:16:28.

Wimbledon, 2014. It is anyone's game. Starts on the 23rd of June

:16:29.:16:32.

across the BBC. A week on Monday. I hope the weather

:16:33.:16:39.

holds right the way through. We are enjoying looking back at some

:16:40.:16:42.

Wimbledon classics each Saturday. Coming up on BBC Two at 11:15am this

:16:43.:16:47.

Saturday, two of the great ladies finals. From 1978 and 1993. Those

:16:48.:16:58.

are the two classic finals that we are looking back on this Saturday.

:16:59.:17:09.

So, my thanks to John and Peter. Peter is heading off to the

:17:10.:17:12.

commentary box. We will join this match live because it is 2-0-G in

:17:13.:17:18.

the third and final set. Andy Castle has been watching this one. -- 2-0.

:17:19.:17:28.

It did not look like it would be good, but it is.

:17:29.:18:00.

Take on the net position. Did so well to get a racket on the return

:18:01.:18:09.

and to make Lopez play a few balls. Last year it was called off at 640

:18:10.:18:18.

can -- last night. Moisture got under the surface and it started to

:18:19.:18:26.

rain. Kukushkin looked in control and served but Lajovic broke. --

:18:27.:18:34.

Lopez. Not only did Lopez serve for the

:18:35.:18:54.

set, but he was up a break early on and played a very loose game. Played

:18:55.:19:00.

really safe short volleys. The Spaniard has done well to recover

:19:01.:19:09.

his composure. I never saw him as angry as at the end of the second

:19:10.:19:13.

set tie-break. A lot of it was to do with the way Lajovic was playing. A

:19:14.:19:21.

lot of players would have gone away against Lopez, even in the first

:19:22.:19:27.

game of this resumption at 12:10pm, Lajovic was close to going to

:19:28.:19:31.

ground. Really not got his footing and all, but he has worked his way

:19:32.:19:35.

into the match. He strikes me as a player who will stick around. He has

:19:36.:19:42.

won eight matches at all levels C. It is his arrival time now. He is

:19:43.:19:51.

23. Dan Evans is 24. Slightly younger generation to the guys at

:19:52.:19:55.

the top of the game. I don't know how high Lajovic can go, but he

:19:56.:20:00.

looks to have the stickability. It is difficult to judge how good a

:20:01.:20:06.

player is going to be watching them on a grass court. He will have

:20:07.:20:14.

played so few matches on the surface. Very steep learning curve

:20:15.:20:23.

for him. Quite an enjoyment, to see players that you would not otherwise

:20:24.:20:27.

see. The first two or three days here always interesting. Great

:20:28.:20:32.

victories for James Ward and Dan Evans yesterday. They are back

:20:33.:20:37.

today. Evan Anderson versus Dan Evans follows this match. Then Marin

:20:38.:20:43.

Cilic and Marinko Matosevic. Back in the day, that is why players

:20:44.:22:04.

used Continental grips, eastern grips, more than the heavy Western

:22:05.:22:13.

grips Lajovic is using now. So often, the balls and low as that

:22:14.:22:20.

did. But those days are over. The courts are so hard it bounces well

:22:21.:22:21.

up. Picked him off right in the corner.

:22:22.:22:41.

Keeps himself in the game. For those who learned with what we used to

:22:42.:22:46.

call the chopper grip, it takes a lifetime to get rid of it. Still

:22:47.:22:47.

trying! The Serbian is in this set. I am

:22:48.:23:06.

glad to see that. One break of serve which is the only thing he is done

:23:07.:23:11.

by, it is not a lot against him. He is a man who has played in the Davis

:23:12.:23:17.

Cup final in Belgrade last year. Lost to Stefan Stepanek in the fifth

:23:18.:23:22.

and deciding match. Tough loss. Invaluable experience. -- Marek

:23:23.:23:26.

Stech and it -- Radek Stepanek. He has become a difficult man to

:23:27.:23:40.

serve two. In the tie-break of the second set, he hit two winners at

:23:41.:23:45.

the point at which he is returning from now. One out wide and one down

:23:46.:23:49.

the middle. He is beginning to pick up the Lopez serve on occasion. Not

:23:50.:23:57.

a good delivery. The slice into the body is always a good delivery. So

:23:58.:24:04.

often it takes away the return's ability to take a full swing.

:24:05.:26:06.

Lopez, one of the harder men to beat on a grass court. He will certainly

:26:07.:26:13.

be a player who will show up in the draw and the bigger players will

:26:14.:26:18.

note to the -- where he is. Struggling to get rid of Lajovic

:26:19.:26:21.

here. Had that one. You have to question why it was he

:26:22.:26:39.

misted by such a long way. -- why he missed it. What was he trying to do

:26:40.:26:43.

with that ball? It is a valuable hold for the

:26:44.:26:58.

Spaniard. You are talking about how the game

:26:59.:27:17.

has changed, the grass mixture has changed the playing characteristics

:27:18.:27:22.

of grass courts over the years. But with that slice, it is like a

:27:23.:27:27.

frisbee. Just carving through. They did not look like a bounce. Also I

:27:28.:27:35.

think the wind grabbed that ball and stopped it, if you will. A

:27:36.:27:40.

combination perhaps of bad bounce, heavy slice and wind. A week ago, at

:27:41.:27:49.

Roland Garros, big match, Nadal against Lajovic. Just a week later,

:27:50.:27:56.

change of country, change of surface, less than two weeks away

:27:57.:28:01.

from Wimbledon, that is the adjustment the players have to wait.

:28:02.:28:07.

-- make. The way your game has to change and the body has to change,

:28:08.:28:10.

your perception and the way you concentrate on the court. The points

:28:11.:28:17.

are less long. It is a staccato feel to a grass court match. Anglais, it

:28:18.:28:22.

is more of a construction, if you will. -- on clay. It requires a cool

:28:23.:28:37.

head. 20 degrees at the moment, rising to 22, 23 this afternoon.

:28:38.:28:41.

Gentle south-westerly breeze. Beautiful weather for the rest of

:28:42.:28:42.

the week. Players will certainly adjust their

:28:43.:29:16.

ball toss if the sun is in the wrong place. They move it back over the

:29:17.:29:21.

head a little bit, perhaps throw a bit more kick on the ball. But it

:29:22.:29:27.

makes it very difficult if you have a big first serve and you have to

:29:28.:29:28.

alter it. This will be interesting. Hold on.

:29:29.:29:44.

He touched the net before the ball bounced twice. You reckon? Yeah.

:29:45.:29:54.

Great effort. Memories of Djokovic hitting the net against Nadal when

:29:55.:30:03.

he could have been 5-3 up. The ball has to bounce twice which would mean

:30:04.:30:08.

the end of the point of course. He hit it before it had even bounced

:30:09.:30:16.

once. Djokovic last year in the French in the semi. Unbelievable.

:30:17.:31:29.

of the members' heads. I do not think anybody got injured but it

:31:30.:31:33.

came off the head of the racket and whipped up into the bar area.

:31:34.:31:48.

Fumbled in the second row. Great control of the tennis ball by Lopez,

:31:49.:31:56.

good strength. UMPIRE: Game, Lopez. Deliberate,

:31:57.:32:25.

measured, controlled. And that will be that, I'm sure. 5-1, two breaks,

:32:26.:32:30.

serving from this end for the Mac. Pretty at -- pretty tame approach

:32:31.:33:48.

shot from Lopez. Whichever way you look at it, that

:33:49.:34:50.

is a beautiful delivery. Slice, power, control.

:34:51.:35:15.

break. He served for the match in the second set.

:35:16.:35:59.

UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Lopez. The scoreline comfortable in the

:36:00.:36:18.

end, 6-1 in the third. It is a credit to him for making it

:36:19.:36:26.

competitive on a Lajovic. Lopez will perhaps look back on the second set

:36:27.:36:30.

and say, I could have done that better, but perhaps playing another

:36:31.:36:40.

set has helped him. Three times he has been a

:36:41.:36:46.

quarterfinalist and he is through, Feliciano Lopez. Next up it is

:36:47.:36:51.

Britain's Dan Evans up against the big serving South African Kevin

:36:52.:36:56.

Anderson. Marin Cilic later, the number nine seed, up against that

:36:57.:37:02.

loss of itch -- up against Matosevic. And James Duckworth

:37:03.:37:10.

against Tomas Berdych, we will be covering that.

:37:11.:37:18.

Many congratulations, how good is it to get the first win in the way? It

:37:19.:37:27.

is a nice feeling. We have only two or three weeks on grass during the

:37:28.:37:30.

season so for everybody it is tough and I have to be proud of my first

:37:31.:37:35.

win today. It is a very different game from last week, 15, 20 shot

:37:36.:37:42.

rallies. It was five or six in that the longest. It is a completely

:37:43.:37:49.

different game, even though the grass is not as fast as it used to

:37:50.:37:55.

be. You need to adjust your game, be a bit more aggressive. For me it is

:37:56.:38:01.

a bit easier and I am happy to be back again and to win today. I am

:38:02.:38:07.

looking forward to the next few days. You got to the semifinal four

:38:08.:38:15.

years ago so big -- so did that give you the taste for being here on

:38:16.:38:20.

Sunday? I hope so. There was a lot of work to do. -- there is. The

:38:21.:38:37.

match at a time. -- one match. Did you know that the chairman of your

:38:38.:38:40.

fan club is Sue Barker, who presents programmes on the BBC? I did not

:38:41.:38:47.

know that. Thank you, I can have -- I hope I can make her happy.

:38:48.:39:01.

Feliciano Lopez, congratulations. What really separates the great from

:39:02.:39:08.

the good? Style, of course. Flair, obviously. Passion, that is a

:39:09.:39:20.

given. Learn from your mistakes. Always think about what you missed.

:39:21.:39:25.

Never be satisfied with what you have done. Whatever you do, do it

:39:26.:39:35.

with your heart. I never thought about what I could get out of

:39:36.:39:46.

football, I just wanted to play. It all gets under way on Thursday,

:39:47.:39:50.

that is when the tournament kicks off. A lot to look forward to before

:39:51.:39:57.

that. Tonight, Gary Lineker in Brazil, talking to Ronaldo, the

:39:58.:40:04.

legend. And a special preview tomorrow evening on BBC1. The

:40:05.:40:11.

tournament kicking off on Thursday, England play Italy on Saturday.

:40:12.:40:19.

Amelie Mauresmo has arrived in London, she will have her first day

:40:20.:40:23.

working as Andy Murray's coach. There is a practice session at 2pm

:40:24.:40:30.

today so we will be courtside to see them as they start their grasscourt

:40:31.:40:34.

season together. A lot to look forward to on the Centre Court had a

:40:35.:40:40.

lot to look forward to later in the week. Ernests Gulbis had an amazing

:40:41.:40:50.

run at the French Open. Let's meet this colourful character, with John.

:40:51.:41:00.

Ernests Gulbis from Latvia, when you wake up in the morning, now you have

:41:01.:41:05.

reached the last four of a major championship do you feel a bit

:41:06.:41:10.

better about yourself? I have proved to myself I can be in the semifinal

:41:11.:41:13.

but I need to make that extra step. To lose to four sets to Djokovic is

:41:14.:41:20.

no disgrace but when you went to bed that you think you could have won

:41:21.:41:28.

it? Five sets against Djokovic in a semifinal would have been tough

:41:29.:41:33.

anyway. I need to have some more semifinals, maybe a final under my

:41:34.:41:40.

belt. In practical terms, what are the big differences on grass?

:41:41.:41:46.

Definitely the movement, I did not move a lot since my last match. I

:41:47.:41:58.

just went... Party? No, I just gambled away a percentage of my

:41:59.:42:04.

winnings. Word you a winner or a loser? -- were you. A big loser! I

:42:05.:42:17.

like the way you are presenting as this big maverick on the tour. Once

:42:18.:42:27.

you have mastered the casino, how do you master the grass? Is it just

:42:28.:42:36.

about practice? I am practising in a couple of hours and tomorrow is

:42:37.:42:42.

going to be the singles. I take this tournament as really good

:42:43.:42:48.

preparation. I will have a lot of hours and running and hopefully by

:42:49.:42:57.

Wimbledon I will be close to 100%. We were almost disappointed in the

:42:58.:43:01.

semifinal last week in Paris that you did not smash your racket, is

:43:02.:43:08.

this the new Gulbis? I have not ruled it out. Good to see you.

:43:09.:43:18.

He always provides a talking point. Some of his interviews at the French

:43:19.:43:23.

Open were memorable. He was asked about Mauresmo, about women's

:43:24.:43:28.

coaching, the question you have to ask everybody. He was saying, yes, I

:43:29.:43:38.

am going to take a list of all the good-looking female players and

:43:39.:43:41.

am going to take a list of all the good-looking female players ask if

:43:42.:43:45.

they want to coach me. He was talking about Ivanovic and so on, so

:43:46.:43:51.

the media flock to him. He has not had a shave and a haircut since last

:43:52.:43:55.

week, but the substance to his game, the fact he wants to be out there

:43:56.:43:57.

and win, week, but the substance to his game,

:43:58.:44:00.

the fact he wants to be he won't be satisfied until he has done

:44:01.:44:04.

something big. Nobody would be interested if he was not winning

:44:05.:44:10.

matches, but he is a threat. He is certainly moving up the rankings

:44:11.:44:14.

into the world top ten. Some good names their emerging. -- there

:44:15.:44:25.

emerging. Gulbis, when you look at his history, he has come from a very

:44:26.:44:30.

wealthy family and everybody said, maybe he does not have the

:44:31.:44:35.

motivation. We knew he had the talent, but he seems to have found

:44:36.:44:42.

the desire. I remember seeing him at the French Open when he beat Tim

:44:43.:44:45.

Henman years ago and seeing the ability he had. He has a very

:44:46.:44:53.

privileged background, he goes around in a private plane, and his

:44:54.:44:56.

motivation has perhaps gone up and down a bit. You ask whether he is

:44:57.:45:02.

ever going to get the hunger, but he has answered that. He is

:45:03.:45:06.

unorthodox, a difficult player to read and I don't think the players

:45:07.:45:13.

like to play him. He does his own thing of the court as well and he is

:45:14.:45:18.

fun to watch and to listen to the press conferences, he is a breath of

:45:19.:45:24.

fresh air. He had a few words to say about Novak Djokovic chip because

:45:25.:45:28.

they grew up together at a tennis academy. -- Novak Djokovic. He said

:45:29.:45:37.

they did not get on and they still don't. He was asked, Andy Murray was

:45:38.:45:46.

asked, what are the other players saying about you having a woman

:45:47.:45:52.

coach. He said, I don't care what they are saying. It is not boxing

:45:53.:45:59.

but it is a combat sport in a way, one person's intellect and wit as

:46:00.:46:06.

well as the game, and he has presence on court. The sort of game

:46:07.:46:13.

that he brings, he serves an average of 126 mph. He can belt the ball

:46:14.:46:22.

past you, a major threat. of 126 mph. He can belt the ball

:46:23.:46:28.

past you, a major Grigor Dimitrov is just outside the top ten. Let's see

:46:29.:46:34.

how he is looking forward to this year's Championships.

:46:35.:46:39.

Welcome back to the Queen's Club. This is a place where you have some

:46:40.:46:44.

pretty happy memories. Indeed. I am excited to come here. It is always

:46:45.:46:51.

something special and it is good preparation before Wimbledon. I am a

:46:52.:46:55.

happy every time I am here so hopefully I can have a good run out.

:46:56.:47:01.

You have had plenty of appearances here and you had a wild card very

:47:02.:47:05.

early on. I suppose that builds an affinity. Yes, it was one of the

:47:06.:47:12.

first tournaments where I played really good. I had a wild card early

:47:13.:47:17.

on and that was a big step for me, even though I had to come out and

:47:18.:47:24.

play against the seeded guys, but I am one of them now. I feel quite

:47:25.:47:33.

confident at the moment and it can be like a happy story for me and my

:47:34.:47:40.

goal is to win. You have already reached the semifinals here, you

:47:41.:47:45.

were pretty emotional. How can I forget it? I was on Centre Court

:47:46.:47:51.

right here and my father was here so that meant a lot to me. The next

:47:52.:48:01.

step is winning it. I remember the reaction of not only the fans...

:48:02.:48:10.

When you won your first round match they were all waiting for you off

:48:11.:48:17.

the court. I think I have a really good relationship with all of them,

:48:18.:48:22.

the whole team that sets up the tournament. A couple of years ago I

:48:23.:48:30.

was down a set or so and I was sitting down on the changeover and

:48:31.:48:35.

one of the ball girls sat next to me and I started asking her some random

:48:36.:48:40.

questions, she was really happy with that. That changed my mood a bit and

:48:41.:48:46.

I came back and won the match. You are massively dedicated to your

:48:47.:48:51.

tennis but you also seem to enjoy other aspects of life. Yes, for me,

:48:52.:48:59.

I think, of course tennis is a priority, this is what I do and what

:49:00.:49:03.

I love, and of course it will be number one for me, but at some

:49:04.:49:11.

stage, throughout my career, I have come to the conclusion that of

:49:12.:49:18.

course tennis is something you are going to do for a period of time but

:49:19.:49:21.

after that other things are coming into play. There are things that are

:49:22.:49:29.

bit more important at times, so I just have to look forward to it and

:49:30.:49:35.

of course do my best, because my goal is to be number one and when

:49:36.:49:48.

Grand Slams. -- and win. You tweeted, outstanding champion, when

:49:49.:50:06.

Maria Sharapova won. She is a true champion and maybe everybody can get

:50:07.:50:12.

something out of that. Yes, they are dating, and she was

:50:13.:50:19.

watching him last year. And it was about -40. If she is there in that

:50:20.:50:28.

kind of weather, watching him, they are together. She did not mention

:50:29.:50:35.

him in her speech, she just said, there are some people who can't be

:50:36.:50:38.

here and I would like to thank them for their support. He talks about as

:50:39.:50:47.

well as he plays, because he is beautiful to watch on court, but he

:50:48.:50:53.

gets the whole package. It is about like the first time you see Raphael

:50:54.:50:59.

on play live, you see the ball come off the racket. -- Rafa Nadal. With

:51:00.:51:14.

respect, he is better than bulbous and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, better than

:51:15.:51:18.

all of these guys. -- better than Gulbis. Those guys have something

:51:19.:51:26.

different from him, maybe they can grind no, but in terms of the racket

:51:27.:51:34.

ability I have not seen anybody like him for some time. -- maybe they can

:51:35.:51:45.

grind more. It takes time to put it all together and use the right shot

:51:46.:51:50.

at the right time. He is an artist on the court, he has so much

:51:51.:51:59.

ability, he reminds me of Ilha Nastase, he has 20 options on the

:52:00.:52:04.

barrel and sometimes he was picking the wrong one. -- on the ball. He is

:52:05.:52:14.

learning that you have to play solidly at times as well as going

:52:15.:52:22.

for the special shots. His coach deserves a lot of credit for that,

:52:23.:52:28.

Peter is not coaching him now that he got him to narrow the focus, hit

:52:29.:52:34.

the right shot. Federer struggled with it, he had every shot in the

:52:35.:52:39.

book and it was not until he was 20, 21, 22 that he settled into his

:52:40.:52:43.

winning game plan. If this guy does the same, personally I feel he will

:52:44.:52:53.

win this year. The best-of-3 sets I would give him a better chance, the

:52:54.:53:00.

best of five it is more tough. Dan Evans, the Briton, down this end. We

:53:01.:53:08.

were told Andy Murray would practice at two o'clock, but we have heard he

:53:09.:53:15.

has cancelled that, he is probably going elsewhere, because now he is

:53:16.:53:21.

with Mauresmo there will be a media storm, so perhaps he wants to go

:53:22.:53:26.

somewhere more private. I wonder where he could possibly be going!

:53:27.:53:34.

Just a few miles further south, perhaps! He is a member. So is she,

:53:35.:53:42.

as winners of that tournament, they are both members of SW19. I would

:53:43.:53:52.

like to go and watch that! This will be interesting for Dan Evans against

:53:53.:53:57.

a very tall opponent, and he will have some Berlitz thrown at him. --

:53:58.:54:15.

will it -- bullets. He is arriving now, we have seen the talent, we

:54:16.:54:21.

have seen it in the Davis Cup. If you can win in the fifth rubber, you

:54:22.:54:29.

have something upstairs. He knows what he has to do now, his work

:54:30.:54:34.

ethic has been a bit shaky in the past but I think he is getting it

:54:35.:54:40.

now. With Evans at the US Open, beating Tomic... He has to make up a

:54:41.:54:51.

lot of points here and this is an opportunity where you can cover

:54:52.:54:56.

those points at some stage. When you are outside the top 100, if you get

:54:57.:55:02.

a lot of points coming off, as he has in the summer, this time last

:55:03.:55:11.

year he won two matches. He beat Jurgen Melzer yesterday,

:55:12.:55:21.

demonstrated a pretty loose, Carmen Cole at -- calm and collected mind.

:55:22.:55:33.

He is a tough professional, week in, week out he is a quarterfinal,

:55:34.:55:41.

semifinal man, Kevin Anderson. Coming up against Dan Evans, who

:55:42.:55:50.

gets a lot of spin Low, gets the ball low, I think you would have to

:55:51.:55:56.

put Anderson as a reasonably strong favourite but it is winnable for

:55:57.:56:09.

Dan. Anderson is always a dangerous player but it is always tough, the

:56:10.:56:12.

first match coming off the clay onto the grass, and Dan has had a lot

:56:13.:56:20.

more time to get used to it. For Dan, the first 20 minutes, half an

:56:21.:56:25.

hour of this, maybe he can get himself in front, maybe nick a break

:56:26.:56:33.

and steal the first set. Anderson's forehand is not as strong as his

:56:34.:56:38.

backhand. He might want to be directing some serves to the middle

:56:39.:56:44.

or body. A very sound professional, it will not take Anderson long to

:56:45.:56:54.

find the ball, it will take him a few minutes, and maybe we can hope

:56:55.:56:58.

for Dan Evans to sneak in on the backhand. The way he finished off

:56:59.:57:05.

that match yesterday, coming back in the third set, would have given him

:57:06.:57:11.

some confidence. Peter Fleming and Andrew Cotter are the commentators.

:57:12.:57:19.

A good day for the Britons yesterday, I win for Ward and for

:57:20.:57:34.

Dan Evans over Jurgen Melzer. Dan Evans does feed off these days

:57:35.:57:37.

sometimes and this would be a big scalp, Anderson. He offers plenty of

:57:38.:57:48.

creativity, Dan Evans, he has plenty of game about him.

:57:49.:57:59.

It is Kevin Anderson who will get us under way, the South African.

:58:00.:59:06.

Anderson serving into the sun from the far end.

:59:07.:59:28.

That serve, 144 mph, certainly had some zip about it.

:59:29.:59:48.

We had another reading of 129 for that one which was 144.

:59:49.:00:09.

of 126 mph. He can belt the ball past you, a major

:00:10.:00:56.

He has every chance. Yeah, this is what Evans brings to the table. He

:00:57.:01:12.

is a shot maker. He likes to go after any ball inside the baseline,

:01:13.:01:14.

he will take it on. That one broke the speed gun! The

:01:15.:01:36.

speed gun is now keeping its counsel.

:01:37.:01:45.

Two impressive serves to close it out and hold the opening game. That

:01:46.:01:54.

is essentially what Dan Evans is up against. Anderson has become such a

:01:55.:02:02.

consistent player. He is six foot eight tall and has a very consistent

:02:03.:02:12.

service action. Very rarely will we see Anderson throw in bad service

:02:13.:02:19.

games. It is going to be a very difficult man to break. Puts a lot

:02:20.:02:23.

of balls into play. Constant pressure. Opponents have to maintain

:02:24.:02:30.

their mental... Pressure already on the Evans

:02:31.:02:37.

serve. Two break points very early in this

:02:38.:04:11.

match. It is quite blowy and there. The

:04:12.:04:28.

trees are dancing. Survived. Two break points have come

:04:29.:05:02.

and gone. Anderson will be really disappointed with how he played that

:05:03.:05:09.

point. Early on, Evans certainly feeling the pressure. You have got

:05:10.:05:12.

to put the ball on the court, force him to hit a winner.

:05:13.:05:27.

Another one white. -- wide. Unforced error from the South African. Dan

:05:28.:05:38.

Evans clambering out of the hole. No challenge from Evans. We have the

:05:39.:06:07.

benefit from Hawk-Eye. It was wide. Yes! Instant challenge from Dan

:06:08.:06:33.

Evans. It certainly hit the baseline. I think it also fit the

:06:34.:06:43.

sideline. Which? the white flew up. -- the white flew up. Break point

:06:44.:06:53.

began. -- again. Frustrating for Dan Evans. That game, a pretty good

:06:54.:07:05.

illustration of what Dan Evans is up against, playing against a big-time

:07:06.:07:12.

player like Kevin Anderson. Evans's serve is not as powerful as a lot of

:07:13.:07:17.

players. Certainly not possible to get it out

:07:18.:07:24.

wide. Interesting how Anderson is mixing

:07:25.:08:58.

speeds up on his second delivery. A double fault at 30-0 hit mark six.

:08:59.:09:13.

The last one spun more heavily. Three aces and one to close out the

:09:14.:09:21.

game. Anderson looking impressive. It is a step up for Dan Evans. He

:09:22.:09:26.

has had good wins over top 50 players. This is a top 20 player

:09:27.:09:31.

now, Kevin Anderson. He has got the weaponry on grass as well. Yeah. I

:09:32.:09:39.

suppose the question is, can Evans try and outmanoeuvre Anderson? Just

:09:40.:09:50.

a little bit. Can he is hit short angles and deep slices and do

:09:51.:09:57.

something to put Anderson off-balance question that it is a

:09:58.:10:01.

tall order. They have met once before. It was eight Challenger

:10:02.:10:13.

Event. Five years ago. -- it was the Challenger Event. Three close sets.

:10:14.:10:19.

We were talking yesterday about guys coming through the American

:10:20.:10:22.

collegiate system and whether it is a good idea. Blaz Rola had done

:10:23.:10:29.

that. Given that that -- Kevin Anderson and other South Africans do

:10:30.:10:35.

that. Your prime is delayed by two or three years. No question that

:10:36.:10:41.

going to college in America helped Kevin Anderson I think make the

:10:42.:10:52.

transition from junior to now, well, top pro. There speaks a Wolverine.

:10:53.:10:59.

Evans serving. Kevin Anderson of course went to the

:11:00.:11:16.

University of Illinois and I believe won the NCAs as well. What creature

:11:17.:11:24.

are they? I do not think they are a creature. Badgers? No, that is

:11:25.:11:31.

Wisconsin. That is quite a good passing shot.

:11:32.:11:56.

Layers are not perhaps quite as adept at hitting low awkward

:11:57.:12:03.

volleys -- players. What a great return of serve that

:12:04.:12:22.

was. Very short take-back and short follow-through. Struck the return so

:12:23.:12:25.

solidly. Good defensive work from Dan Evans.

:12:26.:13:10.

Once again testing Anderson. The strain going through the news of

:13:11.:13:13.

Kevin Anderson as he tries to get down for the ground strokes. -- the

:13:14.:13:16.

knees. The crowd appreciate that. Settle

:13:17.:13:30.

his nerves. Time for Anderson to pile down the

:13:31.:13:55.

serves as well. A little bit trickier with the sun position at

:13:56.:13:57.

the moment. Not much to be done about that. No,

:13:58.:14:43.

if Anderson makes a high percentage of first serves in this match, Evans

:14:44.:14:45.

is going to struggle to break. It is interesting watching Dan Evans

:14:46.:15:14.

waiting to receive a lot of movement... Was much closer in and

:15:15.:15:23.

then perhaps giving Anderson something to think about. Trying to

:15:24.:15:27.

get in his head and distract him anyway possible.

:15:28.:15:49.

Evans, for a change, able to get onto the front foot. Has not been

:15:50.:16:09.

able to do it too often thus far. Watch Evans and see if he dances

:16:10.:16:12.

around more than usual. He has done well here, Evans. He

:16:13.:16:43.

will certainly have more doubt in his mind, Kevin Anderson. His serve

:16:44.:16:48.

creaking a little bit. Break point. Reading the serve and the reaction

:16:49.:17:11.

time, you do not have much time to do anything. He felt he got that one

:17:12.:17:17.

but he could not quite executed. Evans got the serve he was hoping

:17:18.:17:24.

for, but he was unable to time it properly. And others, you just hear

:17:25.:17:35.

whizzing by. That serve speed on the gun has been read at 78mph. I am not

:17:36.:17:40.

sure that is correct! Good hold in the end from Kevin

:17:41.:17:53.

Anderson. Just a little opening for Dan Evans. Did not take the game,

:17:54.:18:00.

but we'll take a little bit of encouragement that he got the break

:18:01.:18:12.

point. Yes. And no. While, the fact Evans managed to get into

:18:13.:18:15.

Anderson's had a little bit was the good news. However, I am not sure he

:18:16.:18:22.

will be able to succeed with that tactic again. -- Anderson's head.

:18:23.:18:30.

Anderson will be ready for it next time and more composed. The progress

:18:31.:18:39.

of Kevin Anderson, the last top 20 player from South Africa, Ferreira.

:18:40.:18:50.

We always look ahead to the All England Club and everything that

:18:51.:18:54.

might unfold there and you think Kevin Anderson is the kind of layer

:18:55.:18:58.

who could have a great championship at Wimbledon -- the kind of player.

:18:59.:19:08.

Well, it is certainly a possibility. As you say, he has a big game, big

:19:09.:19:14.

serve. Very compact ground strokes that can adapt to adverse

:19:15.:19:23.

conditions, bad bounces, let's say. He has a sound mind. So often at

:19:24.:19:29.

Wimbledon, you have to be able to come back after rain delays. He is

:19:30.:19:35.

probably better prepared to do that done a lot. -- than a lot. Well

:19:36.:19:45.

ahead of ourselves here. He has a match on his hands here and Dan

:19:46.:19:50.

Evans... I would thought that was one of Tim Henman's greatest assets.

:19:51.:19:56.

He was so easy going and able to deal with all of the rain delays and

:19:57.:19:57.

things. Of course, the one that got away was

:19:58.:20:17.

the semifinal loss to Goran after the rain delay. Maybe that was the

:20:18.:20:19.

match that proves the rule. Anderson's forehand, not quite as

:20:20.:20:44.

strong perhaps as his backhand. Nicely done. He has got a lot of

:20:45.:21:35.

shots at his disposal. That was clever. Anderson with no answer.

:21:36.:21:42.

See how gracefully and comfortably he slides on the surface.

:21:43.:21:56.

Good hold. Reasonably comfortable hold. Just a break adrift. Dan Evans

:21:57.:22:13.

has set the record for the longest slide. You can see the mark in the

:22:14.:22:15.

service box. Anderson serving. It certainly appears as though both

:22:16.:22:43.

players will attempt, or their best chances of breaking serve will be

:22:44.:22:51.

when their opponent is serving into the sun. That is not this end. Let

:22:52.:22:59.

us see if Anderson can comfortably hold this service game.

:23:00.:23:49.

That was not a good time for Evans to move over. Probably Anderson saw

:23:50.:23:58.

that out of the corner of his eye. Because the score was 30-0, he

:23:59.:24:04.

thought, let's go for it. That is the sort of play you want to make it

:24:05.:24:11.

30-30 or 15-30 when the pressure is on the server.

:24:12.:24:21.

Lovely passing shot. Sixth at eight and full stretch and still Anderson

:24:22.:24:34.

could not get there -- 6ft eight and at full stretch. Nicely played.

:24:35.:25:01.

But eventually Anderson holds. UMPIRE: New balls, please. There is

:25:02.:25:38.

still just the one break of serve that came early on separating the

:25:39.:25:45.

two. We talked about Kevin Anderson, the progress he is making up the

:25:46.:25:50.

rankings, but at the macro Dan Evans this year at Zagreb, he had a very

:25:51.:25:58.

good run there to the semifinals -- but Dan Evans. He beat Carl --

:25:59.:26:09.

Philipp Kohlschreiber. He eventually lost to Tommy Haas. It showed he is

:26:10.:26:13.

more than capable of mixing it with some of the best. It has not been a

:26:14.:26:24.

long match in terms of duration. Done quickly.

:26:25.:26:38.

UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly, please. Time.

:26:39.:26:47.

A reminder of what is coming up on court here today. Marin Cilic

:26:48.:26:52.

against Marinko Matosevic. Then Grigor Dimitrov against James Ward,

:26:53.:27:00.

James Duckworth against Tomas Berdych. Dan Evans serving to stay

:27:01.:27:03.

in the first set. Cracking second serve. He is going

:27:04.:27:19.

to have to take risks like that, I think, Evans, if he is going to hold

:27:20.:27:21.

serve consistently today. Beautifully done. This is his

:27:22.:28:23.

strength, his backhand. Evans has to somehow get Anderson a little more

:28:24.:28:25.

off-balance. Suddenly Anderson just a couple of

:28:26.:28:38.

points away... Half an hour gone in this match and

:28:39.:28:57.

set point for Kevin Anderson. Not a good time for a double fault.

:28:58.:29:41.

Bringing up another set point. Kevin Anderson takes the set.

:29:42.:30:06.

Doesn't he look good written mark it as a long way back now perhaps for

:30:07.:30:12.

Dan Evans -- doesn't he look good? The frustration is clear for all to

:30:13.:30:13.

see. does not live. The difference is

:30:14.:30:51.

that Melzer, while a former top ten player, is a bit more up and

:30:52.:31:03.

Anderson. -- a bit more up and down, a bit more emotional. Anderson

:31:04.:31:10.

is turning into a rock. It is amazing that at such a late age he

:31:11.:31:19.

made his way into the top 20, but he looks like staying there for quite

:31:20.:31:26.

some time. He beat Stanislav Wawrinka earlier this year, ended a

:31:27.:31:33.

13 match winning streak for Wawrinka. He lost to Federer in the

:31:34.:31:40.

quarterfinals that he is a player who mixes it with the very best.

:31:41.:31:45.

Last to Davitt for rare in the fourth round of the French Open. --

:31:46.:32:02.

lost to David Ferrer. Kevin Anderson has been struggling with his knees

:32:03.:32:09.

but I know that an Evans has had knee problems as well.

:32:10.:32:42.

There we are. He sailed it over the mountain. Anderson was completely

:32:43.:32:54.

fooled. Perhaps he expected another one of those dinked passing shots.

:32:55.:33:09.

You rightly spoke about the strength of the Anderson two hander, but his

:33:10.:33:19.

forehand is no slouch as well. He will make a few more unforced errors

:33:20.:33:23.

off it but it is a pretty good weapon.

:33:24.:33:37.

A shame. Working so hard just to get the serves back in.

:33:38.:34:02.

I'm par -- UMPIRE: Mr Evans challenging the call.

:34:03.:34:14.

It has been a while since we have had a challenge. The ball stands.

:34:15.:34:29.

UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Very, very impressive from Anderson. Now it is

:34:30.:34:47.

Evans' turn to serve into the sun. We talked about an Evans feeding off

:34:48.:34:53.

the noise of the crowd but there was no noise for him to feed off at the

:34:54.:34:57.

moment because it is all going the way of Anderson and it is quite

:34:58.:35:02.

short rallies as well, quite brutal to watch. Yeah, they only sing when

:35:03.:35:12.

they are winning! Dan Evans needs to get a few holds of serve to get the

:35:13.:35:15.

crowd into the match. Dan Evans is serving well in this

:35:16.:36:18.

game. First ace of the match. First for Evans.

:36:19.:36:57.

on the line. Run, big man. You can see that he is vulnerable to the lob

:36:58.:37:03.

because he stands very close to the net when he does come forward.

:37:04.:37:36.

And again. What a game from Evans. Come on, he is going to remember

:37:37.:37:56.

that shot. It was on the slide, he knew it was good.

:37:57.:39:06.

such an effective play on this surface, it takes away the chip,

:39:07.:39:17.

returns the chip deep. You can't employ it at every point but once in

:39:18.:39:19.

a while it is a great play. In two minds as he approached that

:39:20.:39:40.

one. Cries of encouragement, just a hint

:39:41.:40:21.

of an opening here. UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Anderson

:40:22.:41:17.

quickly closes that opening. It is hard to see what Evans might be able

:41:18.:41:23.

to do here. He does not feel he is playing well by his standards but

:41:24.:41:29.

anything you could suggest? He is not being allowed to play well,

:41:30.:41:37.

let's face it. It is more that Anderson has not

:41:38.:41:38.

let's face it. It is more that Anderson has given him much to hit,

:41:39.:41:41.

dominant on serve and on the return as well. This is the direction of

:41:42.:41:51.

Anderson's first serves. A lot of them unreturned. Yes, he is mixing

:41:52.:42:03.

it up well. By contrast, Dan Evans, his first serves thus far. 26%

:42:04.:42:12.

unreturned as compared to 56%, a big, big difference. That is the

:42:13.:42:20.

challenge that Evans has. He is relatively diminutive when you

:42:21.:42:25.

compare him especially to a guy like Anderson, so it is difficult for him

:42:26.:42:32.

just to hit through opponents. You do not get the cheap and easy

:42:33.:42:39.

points, the quick points. He has to work for every point he gets.

:42:40.:42:48.

UMPIRE: Ladies and the men, if you are behind either of the players,

:42:49.:42:56.

please sit down. -- ladies and gentlemen.

:42:57.:43:27.

The other thing about Dan Evans, he is still young, 24, a lot of tennis

:43:28.:43:41.

left in him. Well, yes and no. If he decides to continue playing. He is

:43:42.:43:50.

ranked in the 100s, he is not making a lot of money. So therefore it

:43:51.:43:55.

becomes a test of whether he can stick it out.

:43:56.:44:04.

UMPIRE: Game, Evans. A very impressive game to love brings the

:44:05.:44:06.

court to life. People talk about being in the top

:44:07.:44:23.

100 as being the holy Grail, but if you are at the bottom and you are

:44:24.:44:25.

still not swimming in money. It is not until you reach the top 50

:44:26.:44:35.

where the big money is. I am not suggesting that Nadal and

:44:36.:45:09.

Federer actually swim in money at some grotesque pool party. But it is

:45:10.:45:16.

a much easier life once you make it into that top 50, there are

:45:17.:45:24.

tournaments that you can get into. It becomes a virtuous circle as

:45:25.:45:25.

well. Again, just a hint here that Evans

:45:26.:46:08.

can do some damage on the Anderson serve.

:46:09.:46:35.

That is just cruel. 30-30, second serve, Evans undoubtedly was

:46:36.:46:47.

thinking, right, this is the one I am going to take control of. Didn't

:46:48.:46:50.

even touch it. pays off. And those are not the kind

:46:51.:47:45.

of points that Anderson wants to play against Evans. A lot of shots

:47:46.:47:51.

at his disposal. Frustration again from Evans, a

:47:52.:48:20.

second serve that he thought he should have done much better with.

:48:21.:48:55.

He just can't kill Evans off in this service game.

:48:56.:49:26.

A rueful look at the surface, a little slip from Evans. Evans is now

:49:27.:49:35.

getting into a lot more points than he was in the first set.

:49:36.:49:56.

Anderson holds. The hardest he has had to work for his serve so far but

:49:57.:50:04.

still it looks very good on the board. There has been nothing

:50:05.:50:13.

between the two in this set so still some hope for Dan Evans. He did not

:50:14.:50:24.

play here last year, he played in 2012, lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the

:50:25.:50:37.

quarterfinals. Players have different reparations for Wimbledon,

:50:38.:50:43.

some play in Germany, some in Russia. Things are changing next

:50:44.:50:51.

season, the week of Wimbledon is being shunted back. A bit more space

:50:52.:51:01.

in the grasscourt season, it is getting a bit more room to breathe.

:51:02.:51:09.

A huge improvement, a great improvement to the schedule, no

:51:10.:51:19.

doubt about that. It will make Queen's a lot more meaningful. Dan

:51:20.:51:32.

Evans still worried a bit by the sun on his serve, there.

:51:33.:52:34.

He goes to it again, once more Anderson can't quite deal with it.

:52:35.:52:45.

Ten out of ten for Evans on this ball, he has hit everything right.

:52:46.:52:49.

He was in big trouble but that shot bailed him out. Both players when

:52:50.:53:00.

they have struggled on their serve it has been at that end.

:53:01.:53:18.

Trouble for Evans. Just bullying Evans in this game.

:53:19.:54:09.

UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. Anderson imposes himself there and perhaps

:54:10.:54:59.

now a bridge too far for Dan Evans in this match. There has not been

:55:00.:55:07.

too much to chew on on the Anderson serve.

:55:08.:55:33.

Very decent second serve. When Anderson is serving with the wind,

:55:34.:55:44.

as he is a bit from this side, the second delivery is overpowering.

:55:45.:56:00.

UMPIRE: Game, Anderson. And fat hold to love for Kevin Anderson. --

:56:01.:57:02.

emphatic. It has been a chastening experience for Dan Evans because he

:57:03.:57:06.

must have come in with hopes and dreams of taking it to Anderson but

:57:07.:57:15.

Anderson was a very different player when he went close to beating him in

:57:16.:57:22.

the past. Big guys take longer to develop their games than do smaller

:57:23.:57:29.

characters. Anderson I think for a long time really struggled to grow

:57:30.:57:34.

into his body. You can see he has a slight build to start with, so it

:57:35.:57:43.

has taken him a while to become as consistent as he is now. Once he is

:57:44.:57:51.

here, he is an imposing figure. And improving every year. The winner of

:57:52.:58:03.

this will play Sergiy Stakhovsky or prosper deal from Canada, the number

:58:04.:58:05.

11 seed. -- crosspiece that second serve, too short, not

:58:06.:59:07.

placed well enough into the corners, is punished.

:59:08.:59:28.

Moments like that have been all too rare in this match.

:59:29.:59:55.

dying light, perhaps, but still lovely to watch. Last flicker of the

:59:56.:00:01.

dying light? I like that. There we are. They gave, you saw in

:00:02.:00:16.

that game all that he can do, and the variety in there. He just hasn't

:00:17.:00:22.

been allowed to do it all that often enough.

:00:23.:00:26.

Third round last year, it looks as if he's

:00:27.:00:35.

Third round last year, it going to fail to reach that stage this year.

:00:36.:00:41.

A player who really has dedicated himself, though, Dan Evans, to his

:00:42.:00:48.

game perhaps after, as a young man, being seen as something less than

:00:49.:00:53.

professional. Something he has always denied. A very dedicated

:00:54.:00:54.

player now. Serving for the match, serving with

:00:55.:01:00.

new balls. Well remembered. Of course, Evans

:01:01.:01:40.

with the wind at his back, so it made the Sevenstone just a little

:01:41.:01:46.

easier to execute. -- it made the lob.

:01:47.:02:28.

A brutal ending to a harsh match for Dan Evans, but Kevin Anderson, a

:02:29.:03:21.

very, very impressive winner. He moves through to the third round and

:03:22.:03:25.

as much as Dan Evans enjoyed yesterday, he talked about what a

:03:26.:03:29.

wonderful day it had been, not today. This day belongs to Kevin

:03:30.:03:34.

Anderson and he may well be hard to beat in this championship. Yes, a

:03:35.:03:39.

Bridge too far for Dan Evans, really. Kevin Anderson is a step up

:03:40.:03:45.

in class, served too well, powerful off the ground and returned well. A

:03:46.:03:49.

deserved winner. Anderson moves through in straight sets,

:03:50.:03:52.

comfortable. SUE BARKER: So the number seven seed

:03:53.:03:59.

goes through in straight sets and he is in Andy Murray's quarter of the

:04:00.:04:04.

draw, so a potential future opponent for Andy Murray if they both reach

:04:05.:04:10.

the last eight. Two matches completed on Centre Court,

:04:11.:04:12.

disappointment for Dan Evans, but James Ward will be playing this

:04:13.:04:17.

afternoon against the very talented Grigor Dimitrov. Coming up next, the

:04:18.:04:22.

champion two years ago, marriage village, up against a mad dog from

:04:23.:04:35.

Australia, Matosevic. -- Maren Cilic. The red button will have play

:04:36.:04:43.

through till the end of play, you can see James Duckworth take on

:04:44.:04:48.

Tomas Berdych, the former Wimbledon runner-up.

:04:49.:04:48.

can see James Duckworth take on Tomas Berdych, the former Wimbledon

:04:49.:04:49.

runner-up. Let's hear from Kevin Anderson.

:04:50.:04:55.

Just the ten aces today, is that pretty standard for you? It is

:04:56.:05:03.

always nice to get the ace count up. I felt I hit my spots well and I

:05:04.:05:09.

could have hit a few more, but when you are winning points, it doesn't

:05:10.:05:12.

matter if it is an ace or if the ball is coming back and you are able

:05:13.:05:17.

to finish it on the next one. Your first service such a huge weapon, I

:05:18.:05:21.

am sure you look at the percentages, 59%. It's that good for

:05:22.:05:29.

you? I would like to get it a little bit higher, my average is around the

:05:30.:05:32.

high 60s and it makes life a little bit easier but I am happy with the

:05:33.:05:37.

way I've played, coming forward a bit more, getting my footing on the

:05:38.:05:41.

grass. Dan Evans is a tricky player, especially on the grass and I am

:05:42.:05:46.

very pleased with the win. I am sure people watching today thought it was

:05:47.:05:50.

physically impossible to lob you and Dan did it half a dozen times. Yes,

:05:51.:05:56.

the prep the last few days, a lot of movement and not enough going back,

:05:57.:06:01.

so that is a lesson. You try to come forward and get close to the net and

:06:02.:06:05.

he hit some good lobs. Hopefully, it is the last time. It was too shady

:06:06.:06:11.

you, because you landed one in the last game. -- touche. You are in

:06:12.:06:16.

Andy Murray's quarter, will you look ahead to that? That is the first I

:06:17.:06:22.

know about that, I don't look too far, just one match at a time, that

:06:23.:06:25.

is how I approach every match, doing everything I can to be as prepared

:06:26.:06:31.

as possible. Each match, you face different conditions and obstacles,

:06:32.:06:36.

so it is great to get through today and I will be ready for the next

:06:37.:06:41.

one. If I do play and, it would be great, it is a fantastic tournament

:06:42.:06:46.

and he is a great player -- if I do play Andy. It is always a great

:06:47.:06:49.

experience. Many congratulations, Kevin

:06:50.:06:52.

Anderson. SUE BARKER: A player in form, he

:06:53.:06:57.

reached the fourth round of the French Open. That is Pippa

:06:58.:07:01.

Middleton, she loves tennis, she his here at the Queen's Club to enjoy

:07:02.:07:06.

the tennis and the weather, we are in for a treat this afternoon with

:07:07.:07:10.

some great matches coming up. Some matches being completed on some of

:07:11.:07:16.

the outside courts. David Goffin is through to plague Jo-Wilfried

:07:17.:07:23.

Tsonga. Dmitry Tursunov was a quarterfinalist here some years

:07:24.:07:27.

ago, 2006, he is through in straight sets and he will face Jarkko

:07:28.:07:34.

Niemenen, who came through in the final set against Benoit Paire.

:07:35.:07:40.

Other results from the classic that is taking place, the ladies'

:07:41.:07:47.

championship. A great win for Johanna Konta, a bit of a thumping.

:07:48.:07:51.

But disappointment for Heather Watson, who had three match points

:07:52.:07:57.

in the second set against the Canadian qualifier, Wozniacki, so a

:07:58.:08:00.

disappointment for the newly crowned British number one. She became that

:08:01.:08:06.

because Laura Watson is recovering from wrist surgery. And a brave

:08:07.:08:15.

battle from Naomi Broady, a brave, brave battle from Naomi. Well, we

:08:16.:08:23.

are here in the studio, and we are going to talk a little bit about

:08:24.:08:27.

British tennis, but British tennis with a bit of a difference. Russell

:08:28.:08:31.

Fuller is with us. The big story is developing with bed and a comma he

:08:32.:08:51.

wants to become a British citizen. We first started reporting a few

:08:52.:08:54.

weeks ago. He has been living permanently in Hertfordshire since

:08:55.:08:57.

2011, more recently with his girlfriend, a Slovenian singing

:08:58.:09:02.

star, and now he is trying to make sure he puts all of the ducks in a

:09:03.:09:07.

row so he qualifies to play for the great British Davis Cup team is

:09:08.:09:15.

selected. He last played for Slovenia in February 2012, so he

:09:16.:09:19.

will be eligible come next February for Great Britain's first match of

:09:20.:09:27.

next year. He fulfils the residency requirements and the crucial

:09:28.:09:30.

document he is missing is the British passport and he is trying to

:09:31.:09:35.

convince the Home Office that he has been in this country long enough to

:09:36.:09:42.

fulfil the residency requirements. Normally, you have do prove you have

:09:43.:09:49.

been living permanently in the country for five years. He has

:09:50.:09:54.

certainly been here for three, but before that it is a bit sketchy. It

:09:55.:09:59.

is 50-50 as to whether it proves successful. We will talk more on it,

:10:00.:10:03.

but let's hear Russell's interview with Aljaz Bedene.

:10:04.:10:04.

You are currently applying for British citizenship with a view to

:10:05.:10:07.

switching nationality from Slovenia. Why do you feel so strongly about

:10:08.:10:12.

that? Many things. I really love living here, I love British people.

:10:13.:10:20.

I think, just the nation, living here brings everything out of me,

:10:21.:10:27.

bringing the best out of me. I don't know, I just really feel like I am

:10:28.:10:34.

at home, I feel like I have been living here longer than six years

:10:35.:10:39.

and I just want to give back to Great Britain. How easy is it going

:10:40.:10:47.

to be to get your hands on a British passport? I think I have a strong

:10:48.:10:53.

case. I really want this success. And the end goal is to play Davis

:10:54.:10:59.

Cup for Great Britain? Yes, that is why big quest. I am supporting them

:11:00.:11:06.

in the Davis Cup previously, so I am confident and I am looking forward

:11:07.:11:11.

to it. Even though you have played for Savini, even though it is nearly

:11:12.:11:14.

three years, and you will be qualified under the rules of the

:11:15.:11:19.

competition in 2015, do you think there is an issue if you have played

:11:20.:11:23.

for one country, is it fair to play for another? There were a few

:11:24.:11:27.

negative comments about it but I just played dead rubbers, I never

:11:28.:11:36.

played a competitive match, so I wasn't really fighting for a country

:11:37.:11:42.

in the way I wanted to. So I want to play for Great Britain in a live

:11:43.:11:46.

rubber if I get a chance, and I think there is nothing wrong with

:11:47.:11:50.

that. And it would be exciting to play in the World Group, which is a

:11:51.:11:55.

possibility if the passport comes through in time, with Great Britain

:11:56.:11:58.

in the World Group, potentially alongside Andy Murray. Yes, I am

:11:59.:12:04.

looking forward to it. If this goes through, I will be happy. And you

:12:05.:12:11.

are good on clay? It is my favourite surface. I can play on hard courts,

:12:12.:12:16.

but I was born and raised on clay, so I can help with that.

:12:17.:12:22.

He seems a very gentle personality. It is not a new thing, is it? It has

:12:23.:12:29.

happened before. It has happened in tennis, we have seen a lot of

:12:30.:12:34.

players from Kazakhstan, emerging players who were initially with

:12:35.:12:37.

Russia or, if you go back far enough, baby born in the soggy at

:12:38.:12:41.

union. It happens a lot in other sports with athletes switching to

:12:42.:12:48.

Bahrain or rugby players playing for more than one country -- born in the

:12:49.:12:54.

soviet union. There was a reference to that that there had been a little

:12:55.:13:00.

bit of dissent when the news came out. Dan Evans, his position

:13:01.:13:03.

potentially under threat, said he didn't think it was right if you

:13:04.:13:12.

play for one country to play through another. It is hard to define, for

:13:13.:13:16.

one person, if you have grown up in one country and spent the first 18

:13:17.:13:20.

years there, you will feel nothing other than that nationality but

:13:21.:13:24.

others will feel differently, which is why the rules are in place. He

:13:25.:13:28.

was practising today with Andy Murray, so he has obviously got

:13:29.:13:33.

support from him. I don't think Andy is trying to make a point either

:13:34.:13:38.

way. Just looking for a practice partner. Does he have any other

:13:39.:13:45.

claim than he does fans is it? Is it coming from a mature tennis market,

:13:46.:13:49.

looking for a Grand Slam? You look at the motivation. And if he comes

:13:50.:13:56.

over here, I can understand why Dan Evans and James Ward, the others who

:13:57.:14:00.

have had to cope and deal with our system, this guy pulled seizing and

:14:01.:14:04.

is affecting our commercial operation as individual players --

:14:05.:14:12.

this guy comes in. I am actually ambivalent towards it. It happens in

:14:13.:14:17.

all sorts of other sports, cricket, athletics, people have changed

:14:18.:14:21.

nationality and competed at the Olympics. We had this with Greg

:14:22.:14:26.

Rusedski in the early 90s. It is a similar story, he was living over

:14:27.:14:31.

here and wanted to stay. I think the parallels are very obvious and at

:14:32.:14:35.

the time, there was a great deal of cynicism. We have since come to know

:14:36.:14:39.

Greg Rusedski and we have seen his devotion to the Davis Cup, and this

:14:40.:14:44.

country and to Lucy, which is the greatest emotion, to the wife. So I

:14:45.:14:48.

think he has demonstrated loyalty over time. Mo Farah, didn't he come

:14:49.:14:55.

over here with immigrant parents who were escaping a war-torn country for

:14:56.:15:01.

a better life? That you can sort of understand more than this. He

:15:02.:15:06.

appears to be a nice guy but just to fancy coming over here because he

:15:07.:15:10.

feels British. But they were a number of people prior to the

:15:11.:15:15.

Olympics who came into the British athletics team, they hadn't been

:15:16.:15:18.

living over here. At least he has been living here for a number of

:15:19.:15:23.

years and has made his home here. I don't doubt what he says about that.

:15:24.:15:29.

There has to be a hint about that, doesn't there? Playing in the World

:15:30.:15:33.

Group is a huge thing. It would be very naive. To remind people of the

:15:34.:15:41.

commercial advantages associated with it. The Davis Cup, your

:15:42.:15:47.

rankings depend on how much you get paid for playing that week. You can

:15:48.:15:53.

play more on grass, there are more commercial spin offs. He says he is

:15:54.:15:56.

not here for the money. I think he is very genuine about wanting to

:15:57.:16:00.

make Britain his home, I think he feels very settled here. Who

:16:01.:16:05.

wouldn't? The sun is shining, this is probably the number one city in

:16:06.:16:10.

the world right now, but are there greater things at play? Does he need

:16:11.:16:16.

the LTA support, does he need the people's support? The Home Office

:16:17.:16:18.

rules are probably stronger than ours. That is where he slots in, you

:16:19.:16:24.

can see how it affects the others. Andy is there and it doesn't matter

:16:25.:16:29.

but Dan Evans has a lot of points to defend coming up. He is going to be

:16:30.:16:34.

the English number one after Scottish independence. I thought you

:16:35.:16:40.

were going to bring that up. That ranking is potentially a bit

:16:41.:16:43.

misleading, in that he has been out for six weeks with a wrist injury

:16:44.:16:48.

and has had all sorts of problems over the last 15 months, throughout

:16:49.:16:51.

his career it has been a problem. He was 71 in the world last year,

:16:52.:16:57.

direct entry into the Grand Slam is, got to an ATP final in Chennai, so

:16:58.:17:03.

he has potential. Whether he realises that remains to be seen. He

:17:04.:17:08.

is very good on clay, which is the default surface of choice for any

:17:09.:17:12.

nation that has choice of service against Britain in the Davis Cup and

:17:13.:17:18.

he is good on hard surfaces as well. But will he ultimately persuade

:17:19.:17:22.

those in British tennis that it is good for the team? It is not that

:17:23.:17:26.

Andy Murray calls the shots, but if I was Liam Smith and my star player

:17:27.:17:30.

was uncomfortable... Do you know what I mean? He is not strutting

:17:31.:17:37.

around saying this man plays this man and this and that, but because

:17:38.:17:42.

of his position in the game, he has to clarify his position. Would it be

:17:43.:17:47.

five years and then the choice is taken out of anybody's hands except

:17:48.:17:52.

the Home Office and it is rushed through? I think the rules have

:17:53.:17:58.

changed and the way they look a passport since 2012 has changed. I

:17:59.:18:02.

think you have to prove that you have a permanent residency in the UK

:18:03.:18:07.

for five years, but that is where the high paid lawyers coming, there

:18:08.:18:10.

are often grey areas and I am told it is 50-50 as to whether he gets it

:18:11.:18:16.

this time around. If not now, it might be in a year or two, but he is

:18:17.:18:20.

absolutely determined that he will go ahead with it and played for the

:18:21.:18:26.

Davis Cup team is selected. We will talk more, but stay there, the

:18:27.:18:32.

matches just getting underway. John Lloyd is watching this. John, you

:18:33.:18:35.

have been a Davis Cup captain, how difficult is it? You have to look at

:18:36.:18:43.

your star player, don't you? I would say, yes, that is the most important

:18:44.:18:48.

thing. When you have a team where the number one player is

:18:49.:18:51.

world-class, like Andy Murray, you want to keep him happy, but I don't

:18:52.:18:55.

think it will be a problem. In regards to the rest of the team, the

:18:56.:18:59.

rules are the rules and if it gets to there, we have had the situation

:19:00.:19:03.

with Greg Rusedski and other players in the past and I see no problem

:19:04.:19:08.

with it. If he is accepted as a British citizen, I think the rest of

:19:09.:19:12.

the players will be fine with it eventually. Eventually, but it will

:19:13.:19:17.

cause a few problems at the moment. It is a huge moneyspinner to get the

:19:18.:19:23.

wildcards, Davis Cup exposure, it is going to cost those behind, isn't

:19:24.:19:29.

it? It is, and there are always problems at the beginning, but

:19:30.:19:33.

again, the rules are the rules and if it comes through, then you have

:19:34.:19:37.

just got to get on with it. With all due respect, other than Andy, the

:19:38.:19:41.

rest of the players are not ranked high enough where they can make any

:19:42.:19:46.

real demands and if a player comes in that baby ranked above them, then

:19:47.:19:50.

they have got to accept it. -- that may be. And, Russell, he is a good

:19:51.:20:00.

player, he has a lot to offer, so you have to hope he is the real deal

:20:01.:20:04.

and will be here for many years to come. It could change Britain's

:20:05.:20:08.

Davis Cup chances dramatically, that was the feeling we all left Naples

:20:09.:20:13.

with. Despite fabulous performances by James Ward this year and Dan

:20:14.:20:17.

Evans last year and the supporting cast over the last two or three

:20:18.:20:20.

years, the doubles players like Colin Fleming and Jamie Murray and

:20:21.:20:26.

all those who have contributed, Ross Hutchings, of course, Britain are

:20:27.:20:31.

extremely unlikely to win the Davis Cup without two players who are at

:20:32.:20:36.

least in the top 50. It is going to be an interesting time ahead. We

:20:37.:20:40.

were on Murray watch earlier and we were anticipating a 2pm practice

:20:41.:20:45.

session, when we saw Amelie Mauresmo appear on the balcony. Do you know

:20:46.:20:49.

where they have gone? My sources won't reveal where they have gone,

:20:50.:20:54.

but I don't think they will be practising this afternoon, they will

:20:55.:20:58.

be talking about what is to come. They haven't had a great deal of

:20:59.:21:03.

time together, they met just before the French Open, which is when Andy

:21:04.:21:07.

Murray decided he wanted to work with Amelie Mauresmo, giving it a

:21:08.:21:12.

try. The details were sorted out during the French Open, that was the

:21:13.:21:17.

final sign off from Andy once he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the

:21:18.:21:23.

semifinals, so they have a bit of time to chat about how they want

:21:24.:21:27.

things to unfold. She is going to get a bit of airtime, maybe even

:21:28.:21:31.

more than Pippa Middleton. I don't think she knows what she has let

:21:32.:21:36.

herself in for, she is going to be chased all over London this weekend

:21:37.:21:40.

and at Wimbledon. But I think she has a lot to offer Andy Murray. That

:21:41.:21:45.

will be tomorrow, and it will be on Centre Court tomorrow when the top

:21:46.:21:50.

seeds get underway. We have Stanislaus Wawrinka as the top seed,

:21:51.:21:53.

but this man is the defending champion.

:21:54.:22:08.

He won here at Queen's and Wimbledon afterwards and he will start his

:22:09.:22:31.

defence against Paul-Henri Mathieu tomorrow. This one, the former

:22:32.:22:38.

champion, Cilic against Matosevic. Let's hand over to our commentators,

:22:39.:22:40.

it is John Lloyd and Andy. Thank you very much indeed,

:22:41.:22:50.

Matosevic, the Australian, just coming off a first victory at Grand

:22:51.:22:51.

Slam level, having last 12. Cilic knows his way around a grass

:22:52.:23:07.

court, that is the shore, a finalist in the last two years and a champion

:23:08.:23:12.

when David Bell Bundy and let himself down a bit. -- Nalbandian.

:23:13.:23:23.

Third round at the French Open, lost to Djokovic. Pushed him for an hour

:23:24.:23:25.

or so. Mark Woodward, working with

:23:26.:23:50.

Wawrinka. It is interesting, him working with

:23:51.:24:34.

someone like Matosevic, because it is so different to the way Mark

:24:35.:24:40.

Woodward played. Polly, sliced backhand. Matosevic is a completely

:24:41.:24:46.

different player -- volley. It makes it an interesting combination. The

:24:47.:24:51.

French Open, when he won his first match, he did 13 rolls on the clay

:24:52.:24:55.

court, fabulous scenes and all of the Australian players came out to

:24:56.:25:00.

see him watch that first match at a -- win that first match at Grand

:25:01.:25:02.

Slam. You say that about Mark Woodforde,

:25:03.:25:29.

the style of play not fitting with Matosevic so well, but Mark

:25:30.:25:38.

Woodforde could compete well from the back of the court. A very

:25:39.:25:43.

thoughtful player. The drills are tremendous, the practice routines.

:25:44.:25:48.

He was coached by a very good Australian coach, a lefty, and he

:25:49.:25:51.

learned a lot from him. Early days in this match. Day two at

:25:52.:28:17.

Queen's Club and the conditions are perfect. The clubhouse with the

:28:18.:28:22.

clock tower there, one of the most familiar sights in tennis. It is

:28:23.:28:29.

only a 250 tournament. Thereafter to hundred and 50s, 500s, then Masters

:28:30.:28:37.

tournaments, 1,000s, then the big boys. We have just at the French

:28:38.:28:41.

Open, there is the Australian Open at the start of the year, then

:28:42.:28:46.

Wimbledon and the US Open. This is such a familiar scene. The clubhouse

:28:47.:28:50.

has not been purpose-built to stage a big international event, so from

:28:51.:28:56.

here until about eight o'clock, it gets a little bit noisy in the bar

:28:57.:29:03.

area and... But it was the first multisports complex in the world,

:29:04.:29:06.

Queen's Club. International football out of the front of here,

:29:07.:29:12.

international racket tournaments, Oxford versus Cambridge in the rugby

:29:13.:29:17.

as well, took place right here. Just not on this particular court. They

:29:18.:29:21.

used to have the polished wood chords in the old days and it was

:29:22.:29:27.

greased lightning on that court. During the winter, it would leak

:29:28.:29:31.

through the roof and you had to put sawdust on the wet wood. It was

:29:32.:29:35.

charming. And if you wanted a point, you would flip a wide serve out and

:29:36.:29:41.

it just wouldn't come back. You either slammed it for a winner or

:29:42.:29:50.

you put them in the wall. The members liked those fast courts, it

:29:51.:29:53.

made them look good. They served and they might get an ace.

:29:54.:29:57.

made them look good. They served Used to hold the under 18 indoor

:29:58.:30:03.

Championships here, I was 5-5 in a tie-break semifinal one year and the

:30:04.:30:09.

members came on and said "We have got the court booked."

:30:10.:30:15.

Mark Woodforde wouldn't like where he was hitting that volley. That was

:30:16.:30:22.

a strange sort of point. I think he liked the idea of the serve and

:30:23.:30:26.

volley but he got stuck behind the service line and didn't know quite

:30:27.:30:27.

what to do with it. That is a bit sloppy there. He

:30:28.:32:27.

looked a bit casual on that poorly, really. It was a brilliant server

:32:28.:32:31.

and he had so much time on this one, probably too much time. -- it was a

:32:32.:32:34.

brilliant serve. And on that point with Cilic, this

:32:35.:33:08.

is where I think he struggles, Cilic, at the high level, on his

:33:09.:33:13.

defensive play. That was not an easy shot, but the likes of Murray, they

:33:14.:33:19.

would have dog that one back, they are a bit more flexible and have

:33:20.:33:22.

more speed and would have dogged that ball back. He has certainly

:33:23.:33:27.

improved on moving around the court, but at the top, top level, it hurts

:33:28.:33:34.

a little bit. -- it hurts him a little bit.

:33:35.:33:47.

The correction came from the umpire, not questioned by Marin

:33:48.:33:53.

Cilic, because she could have challenged the overrule, but no.

:33:54.:33:59.

A lot of people have said, I know Hawk-Eye at the French Open? I

:34:00.:34:03.

agree. If you have got it, use it. It is perfect, just about.

:34:04.:34:10.

I suppose they don't think they need it because the clay leaves the

:34:11.:34:13.

marks. Yes, but those marks are open to

:34:14.:34:16.

interpretation. I absolutely agree with that. And

:34:17.:34:19.

they are slightly raised, as well. A big point.

:34:20.:34:58.

Cilic was a little bit short with a lot of those ground strokes, they

:34:59.:35:01.

were just past the service box area, and really we are waiting to

:35:02.:35:11.

be hit away, but Matosevic did not do enough with those chances.

:35:12.:36:14.

That is the second missed volley in this game. Perhaps after two or

:36:15.:36:20.

three matches on this surface you would not expect him to miss, and

:36:21.:36:23.

that was a big one, because it is now break point.

:36:24.:36:45.

And that is long, and that is the reward for the Australian, who is

:36:46.:36:51.

animated, as is his coach. Breakthrough, break serve.

:36:52.:36:57.

Of course, Matosevic has had quite a lot of tennis on the grass courts

:36:58.:37:08.

already. He made a final run at a challenger in Nottingham last week.

:37:09.:37:14.

He defeated Dan Evans en route to the final, lost to Marcos Baghdatis

:37:15.:37:18.

in that final. That is a quality challenger. Because of the placement

:37:19.:37:23.

in the calendar, that challenger has a draw to be proud of. Well done

:37:24.:37:26.

there. But Marcos Baghdatis was the winner.

:37:27.:37:31.

It is a bit like when you play a qualifier at Wimbledon. You come in

:37:32.:37:36.

and they have won three matches and they are match hardened. Sometimes

:37:37.:37:40.

they are nasty to play in the first round. Matosevic won his first Grand

:37:41.:37:45.

Slam winner at the French, so that is his confidence there, then he

:37:46.:37:49.

beat some good grasscourt players at the challenger, and Marin Cilic

:37:50.:37:52.

seems a little unsure of his fitting here. He does not seem to be moving

:37:53.:37:56.

that well and his second serve as a little unsure of his fitting here.

:37:57.:37:59.

He does not seem to be moving that well and his second serve is really

:38:00.:38:01.

getting attacked by Matosevic. He is really trying to get ahead of the

:38:02.:38:04.

rally and try to build it, which is a good tactic. -- he is a little

:38:05.:38:15.

unsure of his footing. A long way to go yet.

:38:16.:38:44.

Well, it is not easy to lob a giant. And not easy, actually, to hit

:38:45.:38:51.

overhead away in this particular arena.

:38:52.:38:53.

Of all the flags are saying one thing, the ball says another. --

:38:54.:39:01.

although the flags. It was swerving around all over the

:39:02.:39:03.

place. He is playing very aggressively, the

:39:04.:39:15.

Australian, he is taking the ball on and coming in a lot.

:39:16.:40:34.

Toogood, and he was absolutely right there.

:40:35.:40:40.

That was the Cilic that we have seen so often here at Queen's Club. Big

:40:41.:40:45.

ground strokes, slapping that forehand away.

:40:46.:41:09.

Very aggressive on the break point down, had to cover a lot of court to

:41:10.:41:17.

get over there and cut that forehand volley off. It was coming down the

:41:18.:41:21.

line and you can see, good footwork to get out of there and a little

:41:22.:41:23.

angled volley to finish the point. Matosevic's game is not a thing of

:41:24.:42:30.

beauty, is it? It is not watching someone flow around the court, but

:42:31.:42:33.

you get the feeling he knows how to get the best out of his game.

:42:34.:42:37.

Yes, there is a grinder. Six foot four, he may as well make the most

:42:38.:42:41.

of that physicality. Years of Croatian descent. -- he is of

:42:42.:42:45.

Croatian descent. Well, that was a reasonably big

:42:46.:44:14.

point here, really. He had mishit from Cilic, and really

:44:15.:44:18.

he should have put that ball away and just sort of pushed it into the

:44:19.:44:22.

middle of the net. Strange from the Australian. -- strange shot.

:44:23.:44:42.

It is a gift, that kick serve that he has.

:44:43.:44:51.

When he gets it right it is so deadly, because you are so far off

:44:52.:44:57.

the court when you have no chance of chasing the ball down. Sometimes in

:44:58.:45:00.

the forehand court it sometimes gets in the middle of the box and it can

:45:01.:45:07.

be hit. Tidily done in the end.

:45:08.:45:13.

Trailing by a break of serve to the Australian number two, Matosevic.

:45:14.:45:18.

Lleyton Hewitt, number 43 in the WorldCom is the Australian number

:45:19.:45:23.

one. Matosevic is number 60 in the world,

:45:24.:45:27.

the Australian number two. Anatomic is 82nd rank in the world

:45:28.:45:31.

at the moment. They have for micro-guys in the top

:45:32.:45:35.

100. -- they have four guys. The world

:45:36.:45:44.

has joined the game of tennis, it has been turned into a global game.

:45:45.:45:56.

Would you have played Rod Laver? That generation?

:45:57.:45:59.

It was after, I did play them right at the end of their career. I played

:46:00.:46:07.

Gonzales, Emerson, all of them. My theory was, you had a chance if you

:46:08.:46:11.

got them when they were 40 years old. Why play them when they were

:46:12.:46:18.

younger? You had no chance! When you had fluffy hair, you would

:46:19.:46:23.

have been 17, 18, would you? Tony Roach, Phil Dent.

:46:24.:46:35.

I played all of those. Not a bad bunch of Aussies.

:46:36.:46:38.

One of the first places they would have come is here to Queen's Club,

:46:39.:46:43.

both to use as a practice base and to play, as well. You'll is one of

:46:44.:46:51.

the latest incarnations of Australian tennis, Matosevic. --

:46:52.:46:52.

here is one. He is just not timing the ball at

:46:53.:47:10.

the moment, Marin Cilic. Sometimes the first match on grass is always a

:47:11.:47:14.

bit dicey, but again, it is a big opportunity there to set up 0-15. A

:47:15.:47:23.

resident -- relatively easy ball, just did not finish the shot.

:47:24.:47:40.

You can get up at like that just by the tube station. -- you can get a

:47:41.:47:46.

packet. I bet Cilic is regretting that game

:47:47.:48:38.

where he missed those too easy volleys and lost his serve. Years

:48:39.:48:42.

trying to find his rhythm on what is turning into quite a blustery day

:48:43.:48:45.

here at Queen's Club. First thing is first for Cilic, he

:48:46.:48:49.

has to hold this then think about breaking.

:48:50.:49:31.

He just got put off his rhythm with this slip.

:49:32.:49:47.

At wasp was quite interested in his headband.

:49:48.:50:25.

I think he thought he had this one, Matosevic, and was a bit surprised

:50:26.:50:30.

when he missed it. Not a thrilling tennis matches so

:50:31.:51:51.

far, not much has happened here. At times there have been one or two

:51:52.:51:55.

mistakes in the match. I suppose the highlight for most people, for me as

:51:56.:52:00.

well, to be honest, would be the James Ward Grigor Dimitrov match,

:52:01.:52:04.

which is coming up next. I am really looking forwards to see an Dimitrov.

:52:05.:52:09.

But that is for a later time. Matosevic now just has to be good

:52:10.:52:14.

and professional on this game. He is getting a lot of first serves in, 14

:52:15.:52:19.

out of 18 for the match. Cilic will have to try and find some

:52:20.:52:25.

inspiration from somewhere. He has to keep being aggressive, so

:52:26.:52:30.

far he has been attacking whenever he can come and he has to make sure

:52:31.:52:34.

he does not ease off this game and almost hope for mistakes. He has to

:52:35.:52:38.

go after the ball like he has been and keep that acting. It has been

:52:39.:52:42.

very impressive committee has been coming in a lot and volleyed well

:52:43.:52:46.

when he has had the opportunity. They have played three times before

:52:47.:52:52.

and Cilic has won all of those encounters.

:52:53.:53:00.

If you see a two set lead either way overturned, as they did in their

:53:01.:53:05.

last game, it is an experience you remember for life.

:53:06.:53:08.

The Australian Open last year, first round, Cilic in straight sets, Monte

:53:09.:53:14.

Carlo earlier this year, Cilic in the first round in three sets.

:53:15.:53:19.

Matosevic has never beaten his opponent today.

:53:20.:53:26.

But he can take one of those big Australian steps towards it if he

:53:27.:53:30.

can maintain his first serve here. That is a mistake you just would not

:53:31.:54:18.

expect from Cilic there. The opponent serving for the set, down

:54:19.:54:25.

15-0, second serve, relic -- relatively comfortable backhand and

:54:26.:54:29.

then makes the error. He has another opportunity here.

:54:30.:54:34.

I will be surprised if he gives his opponent another freebie.

:54:35.:55:56.

Taken on his second set point, Matosevic of Australia won the set

:55:57.:56:05.

to the good playing against former champion here Marin Cilic, who has

:56:06.:56:08.

worked to do to try to find his rhythm.

:56:09.:56:12.

STUDIO: It shows what getting a few grasscourt matches under your belt

:56:13.:56:14.

really does. He is in form and the champion is in

:56:15.:56:18.

trouble. 400 miles away from West London the

:56:19.:56:23.

excitement is building as they are preparing for this.

:56:24.:56:29.

That man there is a Commonwealth gold medallist.

:56:30.:56:35.

And he gets it! Ian Thorpe is getting a standing

:56:36.:56:38.

ovation from this crowd. He never faltered, he never slowed

:56:39.:56:42.

down, that was magnificent. Commonwealth gold!

:56:43.:56:47.

Here comes the challenge, it was so close at!

:56:48.:56:56.

STUDIO: Glasgow is ready and they are prepared to put on a great show,

:56:57.:57:12.

23rd of July, the Commonwealth Games gets underway.

:57:13.:57:14.

What a summer of support we have, World Cup, Wimbledon Championships,

:57:15.:57:19.

and the Commonwealth Games. So much to look forward to. And you can send

:57:20.:57:25.

in your questions to hashtag BBC tennis and John Lloyd will be

:57:26.:57:28.

answering your questions, so please send in some hard ones for him.

:57:29.:57:33.

John, are there any subject you are looking forward to answering?

:57:34.:57:38.

Not really! I am ready for everything.

:57:39.:57:45.

OK, well challenge, please do. John Lloyd will be answering your

:57:46.:57:50.

questions on social media, that is hashtag BBC tennis.

:57:51.:57:54.

Matosevic is back, and of course just a reminder that Andy Murray and

:57:55.:57:58.

all the big guns will be out tomorrow, Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray

:57:59.:58:03.

with his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo, who has been here on the tournament

:58:04.:58:07.

on her first day of fishery working with Andy.

:58:08.:58:11.

They have spent some time together and it will be interesting to see

:58:12.:58:14.

how the accommodation works in the next few weeks.

:58:15.:58:17.

-- officially working with Andy. They will be working on the

:58:18.:58:21.

grasscourt season at the moment then making a decision on whether to

:58:22.:58:24.

extend it after that. Former Wimbledon champion Amelie

:58:25.:58:28.

Mauresmo will be an Andy's corner tomorrow as he starts the defence of

:58:29.:58:32.

this title. But former champ Michael champion in trouble here, Cilic has

:58:33.:58:38.

dropped the first set to Matosevic of Australia. Let's rejoin Andy and

:58:39.:58:42.

John. COMMENTATOR: Thank you.

:58:43.:58:47.

You should have seen John Lloyd's face when you said he will be

:58:48.:58:55.

answering questions. What is it about these Croatian

:58:56.:58:59.

players, John, there is a question for you, hashtag Andrew Castle, why

:59:00.:59:06.

are they all giants? Goran Ivanisevic ice Goran

:59:07.:59:11.

Ivanisevic -- Koranic evenness of itch...

:59:12.:59:15.

It is unfair. Must be the water. Serving from such

:59:16.:59:19.

heights, it is unfair. I think they are the tallest nation,

:59:20.:59:24.

or is that the Dutch version might I think they would have to be.

:59:25.:59:29.

But the Dutch are a big bunch. All I know is that Marin Cilic has

:59:30.:59:36.

to get his act in gear here. That was a poor first set, he did not

:59:37.:59:40.

look right at their com his movement, he was unsure of his

:59:41.:59:44.

footing, just there was no explosion in any of his shots or anything. He

:59:45.:59:49.

has to get going, his opponent has dug himself in here.

:59:50.:00:07.

The man who guided Marin Cilic too much of his success was Bob Brett,

:00:08.:00:15.

who has been employed by the Chief Executive of the LTA, to have a look

:00:16.:00:23.

at the performance set up in his country. More on that in a minute.

:00:24.:01:16.

a half-volley one moment and then plays that. He is a difficult man to

:01:17.:01:19.

play against, he doesn't give you much with them. What is coming next?

:01:20.:01:24.

-- much rhythm. We have a new chief executive of the

:01:25.:02:15.

Lawn Tennis Association, Michael Downey. One of the new things he did

:02:16.:02:21.

on taking up his appointment was to get Bob Brett, a vastly experienced

:02:22.:02:24.

coach, he has been out there for donkey's years with various

:02:25.:02:29.

players, including Marin Cilic, he got Bob Brett to do a 60 day review

:02:30.:02:34.

of the performance of tennis in the UK and I understand he will be

:02:35.:02:37.

interviewed here on Friday, and one of the things he is expected to say

:02:38.:02:41.

is the new boss of the performance side of things, or at least integral

:02:42.:02:50.

to it, is Bob Brett. Top-class man. Knows his stuff. We will see now.

:02:51.:03:00.

That is tremendous. That was a good return from Cilic. Improvising

:03:01.:03:14.

there, really short backswing, but directed it beautifully.

:03:15.:05:05.

Going well so far at the tournament. Tony Roach there,

:05:06.:05:19.

talking to Leighton. He dismantled Gimeno-Traver yesterday, four times

:05:20.:05:25.

champion here. They certainly support their players. That was

:05:26.:05:29.

certainly a feature over the years, when the Aussies were playing, and

:05:30.:05:34.

there was a bunch of them in the draw in those days, they would all

:05:35.:05:37.

go out and watch their fellow players play. Very close-knit. The

:05:38.:05:45.

generation which came after you was everything from Simon Newell, Dyke,

:05:46.:05:53.

Mark Woodforde, John was one of the older ones in that.

:05:54.:06:02.

They all travelled and Nails Carmichael would work with them.

:06:03.:06:10.

They worked harder than everyone else, I think, because they were a

:06:11.:06:12.

unit. Nice to watch. And then, of course,

:06:13.:06:39.

you had Pat Rafter afterwards, a fabulous player. The first time he

:06:40.:06:45.

came around, I had the misfortune to play him in Asia in a challenge. He

:06:46.:06:50.

was out with his mum, they didn't know how to get the practice balls,

:06:51.:06:54.

how to get a car organised, where the bus was, but timetables, where

:06:55.:07:00.

the food was. He was wonderful. He had no backhand, but what an

:07:01.:07:08.

athlete. Him and Tommy Hope played doubles together. Happy days.

:07:09.:07:14.

Well, you know, if an Australian is putting on suncream in London, we

:07:15.:07:21.

are doing something right. You would think he would be used to it, he

:07:22.:07:29.

lives in Palm Springs now. You need to be slapping on a lot of suntan

:07:30.:07:33.

lotion in Palm Springs, but his Wishaw. -- that is for sure. The

:07:34.:07:43.

weather forecast has favoured the tournament. Stephen Farrow is the

:07:44.:07:51.

director. They have been blessed with a forecast, they are getting

:07:52.:07:55.

all through the matches. Last year was a bit more difficult, that's for

:07:56.:08:01.

sure. I suspect that is a student on the right-hand side. Mid afternoon

:08:02.:08:07.

here at Queen's Club, bathed in sunshine, great tennis ahead, with

:08:08.:08:12.

Grigor Dimitrov, certainly known for his tennis, but a crossover star as

:08:13.:08:20.

well, Maria Sharapova's boyfriend to some, a brilliant tennis player to

:08:21.:08:24.

us. He is on against James Ward after this.

:08:25.:08:43.

It is like the wind held that a little bit. It is a bit blustery out

:08:44.:08:48.

there. You get the position right and then lose your balance.

:08:49.:08:55.

Finally, Cilic is ahead in a service game.

:08:56.:09:00.

He is mixing this serve and volley tactic at good times. Not doing it

:09:01.:10:01.

too often, not giving Cilic a target, but then throws one in 43 or

:10:02.:10:05.

four points, keeps his opponent off balance. A good tactical match so

:10:06.:10:08.

far from the Australian. Not a huge serve, but it is very

:10:09.:10:23.

accurate today, finding the corners. The last one was 123 but if you hit

:10:24.:10:26.

the lines, that is all you need. Matosevic there with a little

:10:27.:11:29.

gesture to his coach, with his hands, just saying, keep going

:11:30.:11:35.

forwards. That is what he has been doing successfully so far. He

:11:36.:11:38.

doesn't want to get out of that game plan, it has so far been very

:11:39.:11:41.

successful. That was definitely long.

:11:42.:12:08.

UMPIRE: Mr Matosevic is challenging the call. It felt miles long. No

:12:09.:12:14.

overrule, preferring the electronics to take care of it. It was quite a

:12:15.:12:17.

big miss. In the old days, before Hawker,

:12:18.:12:42.

there were some calls that were beyond belief. I mean come on you

:12:43.:12:45.

work hard, get yourself into a position and there were tennis balls

:12:46.:12:50.

that were eight or nine inches out that weren't called. So Hawk-eye,

:12:51.:12:51.

what a plus. That second serve, that is the serve

:12:52.:13:15.

I was talking about. If he gets it out wide on the backhand, it can be

:13:16.:13:19.

awesome, but when he doesn't get it right, it sits in the middle of the

:13:20.:13:23.

service box and gives you plenty of time to step round. I think he is

:13:24.:13:28.

managing his game extremely well. A lot of bad credit goes to Mark

:13:29.:13:31.

Woodforde. You can sense the game plan with Matosevic, playing with

:13:32.:13:33.

purpose and playing for his coach. I think suffice to say, I will be

:13:34.:13:45.

surprised if that wasn't the biggest forehand we have seen in the

:13:46.:13:49.

tournament so far. That was in the slot, wasn't it? He just cracked

:13:50.:13:53.

that. It is brilliant. He is having a

:13:54.:14:17.

lovely time. He has broken him and if he can hold from here, he will

:14:18.:14:21.

have his first victory over Marin Cilic. Playing with purpose, John.

:14:22.:14:33.

Absolutely. That last point, the Love 40, this was the Mark Woodforde

:14:34.:14:38.

influence. This was old school. If you look at this return, he hits

:14:39.:14:42.

that and then comes in right behind it. He took it early and then moved

:14:43.:14:50.

in, a little short backhand slice. He is following the ball in very

:14:51.:14:56.

well. He really is. There are elements of his game, having played

:14:57.:15:01.

Mark Woodforde for many years, there are elements of his game that are

:15:02.:15:05.

like an exact replica. Just getting into position and just asking the

:15:06.:15:10.

opponent the question, can you get the ball over me past me, on a grass

:15:11.:15:14.

court where the ball is bouncing low, your first match? I don't think

:15:15.:15:19.

he can. I think it is a very efficient performance so far. What

:15:20.:15:25.

he is doing is taking the time away from Cilic. Cilic looks very slow

:15:26.:15:29.

because he is being attacked from different angles with ground

:15:30.:15:33.

strokes, short ones, serve and volley, mixing it up, and Cilic

:15:34.:15:38.

hasn't been able to get a rhythm. He is feeling his way into this match

:15:39.:15:42.

but unfortunately there is a clock going and if he doesn't get his act

:15:43.:15:46.

together very quickly, he is going out of this tournament. He has still

:15:47.:15:50.

got time but he has to do some sort of damage on his opponent's serve.

:15:51.:16:12.

It is difficult to believe that Cilic won't break him once in this

:16:13.:16:22.

match, he is such a good return. -- returner.

:16:23.:16:32.

That was a good opportunity, it was not a good approach shot from

:16:33.:16:39.

Matosevic. It sat up and Cilic should have made it.

:16:40.:17:44.

Just a good mixture there of pace and spin.

:17:45.:18:11.

It is a hold with the old tennis balls and from zero 15 down. You are

:18:12.:18:21.

looking for signs of a lower ranked player cracking now and again, but

:18:22.:18:30.

nothing. Strong and solid. This is one of only five grass court events

:18:31.:18:37.

that are played on tour at the moment. Next year, between the

:18:38.:18:40.

French Open and Wimbledon, there will be an extra

:18:41.:18:41.

moment. Next year, between the French Open and week, so Nottingham

:18:42.:18:44.

will be back on as a two event, which is great. So each grass court

:18:45.:18:49.

match ahead of Wimbledon is important for these players. They

:18:50.:18:52.

need as many as they can before playing Wimbledon.

:18:53.:18:57.

When you think about it, the amazing tennis that we have seen, well,

:18:58.:19:07.

forever, at Wimbledon, but now, with an extra week, whether that is to

:19:08.:19:11.

rest or to play more tournaments or more matches, the standard is going

:19:12.:19:12.

to be even better. It is too long. No control at all.

:19:13.:19:34.

The approach shot was very cautious and the volley, again, very

:19:35.:19:41.

cautious. He just pushed that volley, there was no feel all

:19:42.:19:48.

confidence in that shot. -- feel all confidence.

:19:49.:20:56.

UMPIRE: Mr Matosevic is challenging the call.

:20:57.:21:07.

Two second serves. At 042, and then at 30-40 and didn't make a return.

:21:08.:21:48.

He's looking ahead to much here -- at zero -40. He is seeing the

:21:49.:21:52.

finishing flag, but he still has a lot of work to do.

:21:53.:22:07.

Just shows you how much of this game is psychological. It is match over

:22:08.:22:19.

at 5-2, serving for it. Exactly, thinking too far ahead. He has

:22:20.:22:24.

hardly missed a ball and this is the worst game he has played.

:22:25.:23:17.

Now we have an interesting game coming up. Seven time champion Roger

:23:18.:23:30.

Federer is playing doubles with an old friend from Switzerland today. A

:23:31.:23:45.

lot of them play doubles either here or at Halle, just getting some

:23:46.:23:51.

matches. I'm not sure he does that every year. You can put whatever you

:23:52.:23:59.

want to on a contract, it would affect him. He is looking to get his

:24:00.:24:03.

matches. Nadal is over there as well. We have Stan Wawrinka here,

:24:04.:24:08.

the Australian Open champion, he and Andy Murray will form the

:24:09.:24:14.

centrepiece of tomorrow's play. The match that she is looking forward

:24:15.:24:20.

to, and her mates... I say that, I may know what I'm talking about for

:24:21.:24:29.

once, Grigor Dimitrov, he is up next against James Ward. What is that

:24:30.:24:34.

fashion statement? I am a bit worried about that. Gets the job

:24:35.:24:41.

done. That is what Matosevic has to do after that awful game there, from

:24:42.:24:47.

zero -40. This one is all in the mind now, and Cilic suddenly has

:24:48.:24:51.

some hope. Zero -30, having had the match one

:24:52.:25:27.

previously, virtually. He is taking his time though,

:25:28.:27:37.

Matosevic, which is good. He hasn't served well this game. He needs a

:27:38.:27:39.

first serve here, big-time. He did well there, really, because

:27:40.:29:07.

he looked very shaky at the beginning of that game. Yes, there

:29:08.:29:11.

were a lot of glances over to the coach. You just thought for a moment

:29:12.:29:16.

that possibly he might be hoping the victory, instead of going after it.

:29:17.:29:22.

But he came back again. He has had 0-15 twice in this set, and a 0-30

:29:23.:29:27.

in that. Serving to say in the match, the

:29:28.:29:37.

former champion, Marin Cilic. -- stay.

:29:38.:32:18.

a capacity day in the crowd here. The West stand is what you are

:32:19.:32:23.

looking towards. Heathrow is around 11 miles away

:32:24.:32:31.

from the clubhouse. If you want to get here tomorrow, the cube is a

:32:32.:32:35.

really good idea, because I think there is a black cab strike. -- the

:32:36.:32:44.

Tube. I think they are complaining about

:32:45.:32:49.

those companies that use GPS. One of those taxi drivers is James

:32:50.:32:54.

Ward's dad. Murray is in action.

:32:55.:33:00.

But Dimitrov was next. Matosevic, what he would love this

:33:01.:33:05.

to get a start in this game. He was very shaky on the last game,

:33:06.:33:12.

but got through it. Luckily for him, Cilic is just off today and does not

:33:13.:33:17.

seem to be able to take advantage of that sort of gift he was almost

:33:18.:33:21.

given on the last service game. This will be an interesting service game

:33:22.:33:26.

here. Matosevic obviously hoping for a lot more first serves than he had

:33:27.:33:27.

in his last game. game, you are in it, and then you

:33:28.:33:48.

just swipe a forehand. It is very careless for someone of his

:33:49.:33:50.

standard. You just don't expect it from Cilic.

:33:51.:33:55.

He has played so well here and he should make those shots.

:33:56.:34:02.

That is just so wild, he is not giving his opponent a chance to

:34:03.:34:10.

choke. Admirable first serve percentage

:34:11.:34:15.

from the Australian. Seven out of ten first serves in

:34:16.:34:21.

over the match. A couple more and he could be out of here.

:34:22.:35:04.

Free gifts from a former champion and finalist for the last two years.

:35:05.:35:14.

Most unusual. We will be saying goodbye to Marin Cilic.

:35:15.:35:25.

That is tremendous work. He has fired one up into the stands

:35:26.:35:37.

and celebrates rightly for the first victory over Cilic. He is through to

:35:38.:35:45.

the next round. I mean, we were talking about Cilic,

:35:46.:35:49.

and he certainly was not at his best by any means, but I great

:35:50.:35:51.

performance by the Aussie. The number nine seed goes out, 6-4,

:35:52.:36:07.

6-4. STUDIO: A big name to fall, Marin

:36:08.:36:13.

Cilic, champion here in 2012, leaves Centre Court and indeed leaves the

:36:14.:36:16.

Queen's Club. He is out, and this is on Centre

:36:17.:36:19.

Court. We have seen Feliciano Lopez go

:36:20.:36:23.

through, that match held over from yesterday after the rain, then Kevin

:36:24.:36:28.

Anderson overpowered Dan Evans, the wildcard from Great Britain.

:36:29.:36:33.

Matosevic is through to the second round. Coming up next, what a treat,

:36:34.:36:36.

Grigor Dimitrov, the number four seed, with James Ward. We will be

:36:37.:36:45.

staying with that on BBC Two through until six o'clock, but we will be

:36:46.:36:50.

through on the red button to see James Duckworth against Tomas

:36:51.:36:53.

Berdych. Let's hear from the winner, Marinko

:36:54.:36:59.

Matosevic, of Australia. A good week last week in Nottingham, reaching

:37:00.:37:02.

the final, losing to Marcos Baghdatis.

:37:03.:37:04.

Mark Woodforde, his coach, will be delighted with that.

:37:05.:37:09.

A couple of terrific weeks, years through to the next round and has

:37:10.:37:13.

put out a proven man on the grass courts today.

:37:14.:37:17.

Name tab -- Matosevic through on straight sets on Centre Court.

:37:18.:37:23.

Let's hear from the winner. He is courtside speaking to John

:37:24.:37:25.

Inverdale. Congratulations, what a fantastic

:37:26.:37:30.

victory for. Yes, it was a good win over top ten

:37:31.:37:33.

finalists from last year. I just want to thank the crowd for

:37:34.:37:37.

their help and support today. They are uploading you in return.

:37:38.:37:45.

-- they are uploading you. And Aussie getting support from a

:37:46.:37:48.

British crowd pressure might yes, I think you guys feel sorry for us

:37:49.:37:51.

after getting beat in the Ashes. When you come to the grass, you must

:37:52.:37:57.

be feeling pretty optimistic? Yes, last week was great, in

:37:58.:38:04.

Nottingham, it will be up doing competition like it used to be and I

:38:05.:38:08.

feel more comfortable on the grass, it is probably my favourite surface.

:38:09.:38:13.

I don't want to accentuate the negative, but you played Andy Murray

:38:14.:38:17.

in the French Open a couple of weeks ago, what is it like playing against

:38:18.:38:20.

him? He is one of the best players in the

:38:21.:38:24.

world. I think he has the best skill level on tour, as good as Roger. He

:38:25.:38:29.

is one of the two-time Grand Slam champions and Olympic gold

:38:30.:38:33.

medallists, one of the best out there.

:38:34.:38:36.

I am sure you are heartily sick of this question, but the nickname mad

:38:37.:38:39.

dog that you have, what have you done to deserve that?

:38:40.:38:44.

I don't know, I think someone made it up, people keep referring to it.

:38:45.:38:54.

Many congratulations, good luck in the next round.

:38:55.:38:54.

Thank you, guys. And there is Arnold Palmer in the

:38:55.:39:12.

middle. The luck of the Irish!

:39:13.:39:15.

Greg Norman, the champion for 1986. Those call black eyes are burning.

:39:16.:39:35.

-- coal black eyes. Thompson puts finishing touch to the

:39:36.:39:36.

player. Would you believe that?

:39:37.:39:44.

The open Championships will be live from Royal Liverpool, last held

:39:45.:39:52.

there in 2006, won by Tiger Woods and we hope he will be fit enough to

:39:53.:39:56.

play there again this year. The Open Championship and other big

:39:57.:39:59.

event in this wonderful summer of sport.

:40:00.:40:03.

Over on Court Number One, Marcos Baghdatis has come through in his

:40:04.:40:09.

match against Bradley Klahn of the United States.

:40:10.:40:15.

He was in the Australian Open final in 2006, the same year he reached

:40:16.:40:19.

the Wimbledon semifinal. Marcos Baghdatis, one of the biggest

:40:20.:40:24.

characters on Court, coming through on Court Number One.

:40:25.:40:28.

After the match he spoke to John. You are playing well at the moment,

:40:29.:40:31.

you had your first tournament victory in years that the weekend,

:40:32.:40:35.

how are you feeling? I am feeling good, it is nice to be

:40:36.:40:38.

back, especially playing five matches in a week. It is good

:40:39.:40:46.

training. I am feeling great. I was happy with how I was playing last

:40:47.:40:50.

week, today was tricky conditions but I am pleased I got through.

:40:51.:40:54.

You said you have taken a couple of months out of tennis to spend time

:40:55.:40:57.

with your family, does that change your attitude to the game when you

:40:58.:41:00.

come back? A bit, you are fresher, you accept

:41:01.:41:04.

things a bit more than usual. When you travel so much you get so tired

:41:05.:41:09.

of the same things, watching the same people all the time.

:41:10.:41:14.

Do you forget sometimes why you play the game?

:41:15.:41:18.

Yes, for sure, it comes to the point where you start doubting why you are

:41:19.:41:23.

there, what am I doing here? That is not the way I want to play and for

:41:24.:41:27.

me it was a great mental recovery just to stop for two months, get my

:41:28.:41:32.

things together and spend a lot of time with family. That is very

:41:33.:41:36.

important and I am healthy, I am back, feeling motivated. It is good.

:41:37.:41:42.

A nice, easy match in the next ring for you.

:41:43.:41:45.

Yes, very easy! It will be a tough one, but I am feeling good. I will

:41:46.:41:50.

go out of their run to just try to play the way I have been playing in

:41:51.:41:53.

the last few weeks. I'm a bit tired mentally from last week, but I will

:41:54.:41:57.

give it my best, I will fight for every point and see what comes.

:41:58.:42:02.

At a theatre that match, you saluted the crowd and the crowd love you,

:42:03.:42:06.

they gave you a huge ovation. When you do not play, when you take

:42:07.:42:09.

months away from the circuit, do you like that are what you misquoted

:42:10.:42:14.

Mark I think that is the only moment you miss, the emotions the crowd

:42:15.:42:19.

give you and winning a point, the crowd clapping and looking at the

:42:20.:42:22.

crowd and they shall use much love and respect, that is the most

:42:23.:42:28.

important thing you miss. -- they sure you so much love.

:42:29.:42:32.

I hopefully I will get back and enjoy more times.

:42:33.:42:36.

It is good to see you back. When John posed the question about

:42:37.:42:40.

that next difficult match, he is up against Stan Wawrinka, the top seed.

:42:41.:42:45.

Marcos Baghdatis was a winner in three sets on Court Number One.

:42:46.:42:50.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin came through in three sets against Evgeny Donskoy

:42:51.:42:53.

of Russia. He will face Nicolas Mahut of the

:42:54.:42:57.

next round, the fellow Frenchman he has been a doubles partner of us.

:42:58.:43:04.

Also, Vasek Pospisil of Canada, the 11th seed, a winner in three sets on

:43:05.:43:09.

some of the outside courts today. Next up on Centre Court, the one we

:43:10.:43:15.

have really been looking forward to, James Ward coming on to, James Ward

:43:16.:43:18.

coming onto court against Grigor Dimitrov. There is a real stir here,

:43:19.:43:23.

a couple of years ago he reached the semifinals and he is the rising star

:43:24.:43:26.

of the game, ranked 13th in the world. Many people, including John

:43:27.:43:36.

Lloyd, thinks he could come through here and win it. We will be right

:43:37.:43:42.

back with that match in a moment. Tomorrow, Andy Murray will be on

:43:43.:43:50.

court against Paul Henri Matthieu, who was practising today with Stan

:43:51.:43:52.

Wawrinka. There is Stan, who is the top seed

:43:53.:43:58.

in the Championship. There is Andy Murray's up on it

:43:59.:44:02.

tomorrow, let us hear from him and how he is approaching the match.

:44:03.:44:06.

When you see that you have Andy Murray in the next round, what are

:44:07.:44:10.

your first thoughts? First of all, to try to win my first

:44:11.:44:15.

match! Every match is difficult, so I am happy with a victory in the

:44:16.:44:19.

first round. It is always interesting to play here on the

:44:20.:44:23.

grass, he is playing at home so it will be interesting.

:44:24.:44:25.

You have never played against him on grass.

:44:26.:44:29.

No, it is the first time and the first time I have played on Centre

:44:30.:44:31.

Court here. I have played on Centre Court

:44:32.:44:35.

everywhere in the world. As a player do you keep a list of

:44:36.:44:39.

the Centre Court you have not played on and tick them off question mark

:44:40.:44:43.

yes, I played on all of them. I I had not played on this one, so

:44:44.:44:49.

my list is not going to be empty. I do not want to raise a difficult

:44:50.:44:53.

subject, but you do not have a great record against Andy, do you?

:44:54.:44:58.

Honestly, if you say so, I think no. I don't know if I beat him once.

:44:59.:45:03.

You haven't. I remember once in Miami I was up and I lost that

:45:04.:45:10.

match. He is tough to play for me because

:45:11.:45:14.

he can mix it up really well and he is a really tough player. It will be

:45:15.:45:17.

difficult. Obviously you will be playing

:45:18.:45:19.

against the crowd, as well. Does that affect you at all or do

:45:20.:45:23.

you live in a bubble by yourself? I am used to it. I used to play the

:45:24.:45:32.

Davis Cup by what -- a lot and I am used to the crowd.

:45:33.:45:35.

Well, best of luck, maybe not too much.

:45:36.:45:37.

Thank you. The crowd will not faze him, he is

:45:38.:45:40.

an experienced competitor and he will be facing Andy Murray tomorrow.

:45:41.:45:45.

You saw the crowds of kids and spectators around the practice

:45:46.:45:48.

courts watching the tennis and getting the odd autograph or two.

:45:49.:45:57.

All Henri Mathieu... They are walking away thinking, who

:45:58.:46:00.

is that? I did not want him to sign that ball! There is John

:46:01.:46:05.

entertaining the crowds on the practice courts, as well. He is

:46:06.:46:09.

enjoying himself. Yes, it is his big moment. I hope

:46:10.:46:14.

you remembered who he is pretending to be. -- I hope he remembers.

:46:15.:46:22.

But here's an experienced camper, isn't he?

:46:23.:46:26.

John has been around for years. Not John Inverdale!

:46:27.:46:30.

Yes, he is tough. A player does not remember every match they have

:46:31.:46:34.

played, but if you have match point and then lose it stays with you for

:46:35.:46:38.

life. I bet you can remember that. Yes. Are you speaking from

:46:39.:46:41.

experience? Yes, I was playing a Frenchman, I

:46:42.:46:51.

was 6-1, 5-1 up and lost it. It is your last waking thought, you

:46:52.:46:55.

do remember. Of course, he has not beaten Andy

:46:56.:46:58.

and I don't expect him to this time. He is not the sort of player that

:46:59.:47:02.

will worry about the size of the crowd or any sense of occasion, he

:47:03.:47:06.

has been there and done that. Of course, Murray has to boot that

:47:07.:47:09.

semifinal defeat behind them because he got thumped by rough and about.

:47:10.:47:15.

-- Rafael Nadal. He did, I guess he was a little

:47:16.:47:21.

tired or just overrun by Nadal. It was not his greatest hour, but you

:47:22.:47:25.

look back and you think, that Nadal guy, he's pretty good, on clay

:47:26.:47:29.

especially. It was also a great run to the

:47:30.:47:34.

semifinals on clay for Andy, as well.

:47:35.:47:35.

A Grand Slam, especially when you are not supposed to be quite as

:47:36.:47:39.

strong on. It was only a few weeks ago we were wondering about surgery

:47:40.:47:42.

and the motivation of Andy Murray and all of these questions come up,

:47:43.:47:45.

but he is always the centre of attention because he is so good.

:47:46.:47:50.

The last couple of German tea has played that is the best clay-court

:47:51.:47:54.

tennis he has ever played. -- the last couple of tournaments. He must

:47:55.:47:58.

be thinking he is playing as good as ever and has a great shots. -- a

:47:59.:48:04.

great shot. Well, Amelie Mauresmo has arrived

:48:05.:48:07.

and they have gone to another practice, but he has also decided to

:48:08.:48:11.

get his hair cut. There he is having his hair cut. You have to look your

:48:12.:48:15.

best, he will be in the spotlight over the next few weeks, that is

:48:16.:48:20.

another box ticked. That is indeed players lounge.

:48:21.:48:25.

So he has been shaved. Yes, ready for the grasscourt season.

:48:26.:48:30.

I think he enjoys the cat and mouse with the press, the written press

:48:31.:48:35.

are wondering where he has gone, whether the BBC knows something

:48:36.:48:39.

everyone else doesn't. He is always the centre of

:48:40.:48:42.

attention. I wonder if Amelie Mauresmo is ready for all that over

:48:43.:48:46.

here. It will be quite something, because she is going to be

:48:47.:48:49.

fascinating for the next two or three weeks, as well.

:48:50.:48:53.

Yes, because Ivan Lendl refused to do anything and I wonder if that may

:48:54.:48:58.

be the best idea, to say no to everybody.

:48:59.:49:00.

His interviews were not exactly easy, you had to have ten question

:49:01.:49:06.

ready for Ivan Lendl. Privately he is funny as hell but to interview he

:49:07.:49:11.

is difficult. Our fascinating matchup on Centre

:49:12.:49:13.

Court, Grigor Dimitrov against James Ward. Grigor Dimitrov, we have been

:49:14.:49:19.

talking about him throughout the day, such an incredible talent, a

:49:20.:49:22.

wonderful ambassador for the game and could be the big future of the

:49:23.:49:27.

number one spot. It is certainly possible. He is

:49:28.:49:30.

coming along nicely, a steady progression.

:49:31.:49:35.

Obviously, perhaps the most charismatic of that generation. So,

:49:36.:49:41.

let us hope, for tennis's sake, that he does come through and challenges

:49:42.:49:44.

the top spot. He is the youngest guy in the top

:49:45.:49:47.

20. Even though he has been around for years he is the youngest man.

:49:48.:49:54.

I want James to play well today, he has been working with a guy called

:49:55.:49:59.

Darren from Australia, Darrin Tenby, and they have been working on the

:50:00.:50:02.

mindset they take out onto the court. With a bit of luck it will

:50:03.:50:05.

fortify him. Andrew Cotter is in position, all

:50:06.:50:11.

yours, Andrew. COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Grigor

:50:12.:50:16.

Dimitrov will get us under way as the cloud comes in.

:50:17.:50:20.

A big talent in the game, double fault to start.

:50:21.:50:47.

As Andrew was saying, you just want to James Ward to give a good account

:50:48.:50:53.

of himself on this stage, and he has been to the semifinal of this

:50:54.:50:57.

tournament before three years ago, but Dan Evans was rather overwhelmed

:50:58.:51:04.

by Kevin Anderson earlier... A similar disparity in the rankings

:51:05.:51:05.

here between these two. Easing himself in nicely, now,

:51:06.:52:01.

Dimitrov, after that initial double fault.

:52:02.:52:06.

And, ultimately, a good folder. -- hold.

:52:07.:52:14.

That was an impressive game, wasn't it? Dimitrov's showing that he has

:52:15.:52:25.

some pop. When the first serve as firing, he

:52:26.:52:29.

is a rough guide to fend off. Of course, the forehand is a very

:52:30.:52:34.

potent weapon. Yes, and we watched that match

:52:35.:52:38.

between Dan Evans at Kevin Anderson earlier, which on the day was a bit

:52:39.:52:40.

of a mismatch. This will be a slightly different

:52:41.:52:50.

affair to that. Two very different players.

:52:51.:53:03.

Nicely played. Of course, Dimitrov and Anderson are two entirely

:53:04.:53:09.

different styles. I think we will probably see some

:53:10.:53:15.

slightly longer points in this match than we did between Evans and

:53:16.:53:18.

Anderson. We have already seen from Dimitrov

:53:19.:53:23.

slices and angles and top-spin. There is a lot more variety than

:53:24.:53:25.

Anderson brought to the table. That backhand barely made it to the

:53:26.:54:08.

net. James Ward, equally impressive in

:54:09.:54:21.

his opening service game. The first ace of the match.

:54:22.:54:53.

That is a great serve. On that surface, when that serve as working,

:54:54.:54:55.

unreturnable. Athletic. Entertaining to watch,

:54:56.:55:41.

Dimitrov. Yes, you are not going to have a lot

:55:42.:55:59.

of joy trying to dig this guy around. He moves well.

:56:00.:56:07.

A good return brings Ward some success.

:56:08.:56:25.

A good service game for Dimitrov. Not a Goliath by modern tennis

:56:26.:56:38.

players' standards, but he has some real strength in that serve.

:56:39.:56:42.

Interestingly, when you see Dimitrov, it is almost as if talent

:56:43.:56:48.

is associated with him. He is starting to fulfil that. I

:56:49.:56:53.

suppose because he was labelled talented, it is a tag to carry

:56:54.:56:57.

around, but it was said he could be as good as Roger Federer.

:56:58.:57:00.

I am not sure that was the exact words, but he put him in that

:57:01.:57:06.

bracket and people let upon it. He won Wimbledon open juniors, so the

:57:07.:57:09.

pressure starts to bear down, but I think he has coped with it pretty

:57:10.:57:14.

well, his transition to a senior player.

:57:15.:57:16.

Absolutely, I think a lot of people then said he has as much talent as

:57:17.:57:21.

Roger Federer sobriquets he not as successful? Therefore, you obviously

:57:22.:57:24.

does not work hard enough comedy likes to party tonight and is just

:57:25.:57:30.

not dedicated. Of course, none of those comments are fair. The guy has

:57:31.:57:34.

really put in a lot of the hard yards over the last 12 months.

:57:35.:57:41.

Perhaps it has been the last year and a half that his attitude and

:57:42.:57:45.

maybe has become just a little more mature, because his fitness levels

:57:46.:57:53.

have improved immensely. It is Ward.

:57:54.:58:02.

Yes, he made it look so simple. But it takes some -- something a little

:58:03.:58:24.

special to take his foot off the pedal enough just to touch the ball

:58:25.:58:29.

over the net. A flexible young man, as well.

:58:30.:58:55.

Ward has settled quickly into this match, as well. The 3-set matches

:58:56.:59:05.

are a bit of a splint, you cannot let your opponent get to quick

:59:06.:59:07.

start. -- a bit of a sprint. That is beautifully done, wonderful

:59:08.:59:27.

points. covers the net very well. Ward seems

:59:28.:00:01.

to be landing his first serves pretty well in the early stages.

:00:02.:00:10.

That is a good hold. Plenty of pressure coming down from the

:00:11.:00:18.

talented Dimitrov there. At this stage, James Ward has done it

:00:19.:00:24.

before. He had the run to the semifinals three years ago and he

:00:25.:00:27.

beat the defending champion Sam Querrey. He will not be fazed by the

:00:28.:00:29.

challenge facing him. They do not hang about, these two. ?

:00:30.:00:47.

la macro he might be fazed by the shots coming his way though! He

:00:48.:00:51.

might be fazed. Always good to watch, Dimitrov.

:00:52.:01:35.

Sweet once again. Dimitrov just caressing the volley.

:01:36.:01:46.

It is a hold to love for the Bulgarian. A bit of a

:01:47.:01:55.

standard-bearer for Bulgarian tennis. Trying to think of Bulgarian

:01:56.:02:03.

tennis players. Certainly on the mend's side of things. When he won

:02:04.:02:08.

in Stockholm last year, that was the first time any barbarian had one the

:02:09.:02:22.

men's title -- the first time any bold -- Bulgarian had won the

:02:23.:02:29.

mend's title. He already is a big star in Bulgaria. Youngsters want to

:02:30.:02:37.

take up the game there and they need a hero to follow and Dimitrov is

:02:38.:02:41.

already that. He has made steady progress. That is the story, really.

:02:42.:02:52.

He has continued to improve and now has the scent of the very highest

:02:53.:03:01.

level of the game. Now he probably believes that becoming number one is

:03:02.:03:07.

within his grasp or that he has a chance to actually achieve that one

:03:08.:03:12.

day. It is a big hurdle to overcome because a lot of people never think

:03:13.:03:18.

that they have that opportunity. We are still on serve here in the first

:03:19.:03:21.

set. James Ward looks to be hitting the

:03:22.:04:06.

ball quite clearly so far. He has had a very confident start so far

:04:07.:04:08.

today. That is Ward's real strength. The

:04:09.:04:40.

two hander is his best shot, most confident and most secure.

:04:41.:04:49.

A very high percentage early on of first serves landing for Ward.

:04:50.:05:10.

Just did not quite get it out wide enough.

:05:11.:05:30.

That is good! It is a good hold for James Ward. Ward completely fooled

:05:31.:05:43.

Dimitrov with the amount of top-spin on that shot.

:05:44.:05:46.

Dimitrov with the amount of top-spin on that I think Dimitrov thought it

:05:47.:05:48.

was going long. At first, anyway. Good hitting again by Ward. His

:05:49.:06:47.

ground strokes were firing well. Very blustery out there. You can see

:06:48.:07:50.

the flags. It is not easy. Hunting for a tennis board under the

:07:51.:07:53.

scoreboard. Just delayed for a moment. -- a tennis ball.

:07:54.:08:13.

Explosive forehand. Ward would have liked to have done a lot more with

:08:14.:08:26.

that return of serve. Second serve. Set it up in the middle of the

:08:27.:08:28.

court. Half a chance there for James Ward

:08:29.:08:42.

but Dimitrov holds. We move on. On serve. They have played once before

:08:43.:08:51.

but Dimitrov was 23 and they met five years ago in a futures event.

:08:52.:08:58.

James Ward won that. Dimitrov was but a lad. Their first meeting at

:08:59.:09:03.

this level is now. A very precocious lad though. That is not to be

:09:04.:09:13.

entirely discounted. Both of these players love it here. We mentioned

:09:14.:09:20.

Ward's great run to the semifinals. Dimitrov is a regular here. This is

:09:21.:09:24.

his sixth appearance at the Queen's Club. They did to the semifinal a

:09:25.:09:29.

couple of years ago losing to David Nalbandian. Lost in the opening

:09:30.:09:35.

match last year to Lleyton Hewitt. No disgrace in that. It was two

:09:36.:09:46.

years ago that Dimitrov got through to the semifinals, was it? Last year

:09:47.:09:49.

he would have been nervous knowing he had so many points to defend.

:09:50.:09:57.

Clean slate this year. He can swing freely. New balls. James Ward

:09:58.:10:03.

serving. That was a mental error. New balls,

:10:04.:10:22.

you have to guard against the slice and wide -- out wide.

:10:23.:11:19.

Again, very, very impressive serving from James Ward. We are waxing

:11:20.:11:30.

lyrical about the talent and wonder of Grigor Dimitrov, but this first

:11:31.:11:39.

set is anybody's. James Ward showed as yesterday in his opening round

:11:40.:11:46.

when that he is matched tough -- he showed us yesterday in his opening

:11:47.:11:53.

round win. He knows how to compete. Dimitrov just starting to misfire a

:11:54.:12:01.

couple of loose ones. Another hold for Dimitrov. Really

:12:02.:14:07.

nicely played. Dimitrov showed us he has got a really good understanding

:14:08.:14:11.

of the court and how to take advantage of situations will stop

:14:12.:14:16.

his mishit forehand muso short -- landed so short that Ward could not

:14:17.:14:24.

do much but ship it back. Dimitrov said, the net is where I want to be.

:14:25.:14:36.

-- chip it back. Good point you made that James Ward is battle hardened.

:14:37.:14:40.

He did not play particular well in Nottingham last week, but won of

:14:41.:14:44.

course yesterday. Whereas Dimitrov has not played since disappointing

:14:45.:14:49.

first-round defeat at the French Open to Ivo Karlovic Rob volley. But

:14:50.:14:57.

he has played well on the clay this year -- Ivo Karlovic. I do not think

:14:58.:15:03.

the first-round loss in Paris will be anything more than just a blip in

:15:04.:15:09.

his year. The rest might indeed do him good. Perhaps. A very good

:15:10.:15:18.

season for Dimitrov. He won in an occult that Billy Maca -- in

:15:19.:15:30.

Acapulco. James Ward very much in this. Serving to stay in the first

:15:31.:15:31.

set. Very close. That would have been the

:15:32.:16:26.

shot of the week thus far. Look how far behind the baseline Dimitrov

:16:27.:16:33.

was. How did he generate that sort of power. Out by any much. -- an

:16:34.:16:38.

inch. How can he respond? So evenly

:16:39.:17:40.

matched throughout the set and then right at the end, the jitters. Set

:17:41.:17:45.

point. Relief from the crowd. Dimitrov

:17:46.:18:20.

throws his head back in frustration. That is not a forehand he would

:18:21.:18:27.

expect to miss too often. Perhaps the occasion got to him as well.

:18:28.:18:37.

Challenge from Grigor Dimitrov on that one. But if it is good, it is a

:18:38.:19:17.

hold of serve for James Ward. It is. Comfortably in. What they hold that

:19:18.:19:26.

is for James Ward. -- a whole. He was up against it, facing set point.

:19:27.:19:33.

He certainly was. That will boost him.

:19:34.:20:06.

Very strong service game from Grigor Dimitrov. A hold to love. Does not

:20:07.:20:51.

matter. It is who plays the big points well. James Ward as well, if

:20:52.:20:57.

you can get into the tie-break, every chance there. He has done

:20:58.:21:05.

well. Dimitrov has maybe not played his exhilarating best, but he has

:21:06.:21:14.

been solid. Ward has been with him every step of the way.

:21:15.:21:37.

He does have a loyal following, Grigor Dimitrov.

:21:38.:21:41.

UMPIRE: Time. Once more, it is up to James Ward to

:21:42.:22:04.

try and hold serve to stay in this set.

:22:05.:22:17.

Great play from Dimitrov. That was an imposing point. The drop volley

:22:18.:22:31.

from Ward was beautifully played. Graceful and athletic. The shot was

:22:32.:22:36.

perfectly placed. Thought one of the strokes from

:22:37.:23:09.

Dimitrov was long on the baseline. James Ward having a chat to the

:23:10.:23:14.

umpire. He made it look so easy. But it was

:23:15.:23:55.

anything but. That was a beautifully played point from James Ward. He is

:23:56.:24:03.

responding well, there is no doubt about that. The question was whether

:24:04.:24:07.

he would live up to the challenge. Once again, Ward trying to slide the

:24:08.:24:45.

ball out wide, not getting enough angle. Of course, if you hit it like

:24:46.:24:51.

that, you have opened up the court and you have given your opponent all

:24:52.:25:02.

of the ankles. -- angles. He is challenging, Ward. Everybody in here

:25:03.:25:09.

Sword Beach puff of white. -- everybody in here saw. Just in the

:25:10.:25:17.

hope or chi is misbehaving. Fancy that. Here is the real pressure on

:25:18.:25:26.

the Ward serve. UMPIRE: Advantage, Dimitrov. As in

:25:27.:25:41.

the last service game, set point. Overalls by the umpire. --

:25:42.:26:15.

overrules. It hangs on the decision of the umpire. It was called out by

:26:16.:26:19.

the line judge. It was a clean winner. What a shot it was as well.

:26:20.:26:25.

On the run, to win the set. There is nothing James Ward can do. Wonderful

:26:26.:26:35.

point by Dimitrov. It most certainly was. Well out of court, still

:26:36.:26:43.

managed to generate enough top-spin. Dropped it inside the baseline. His

:26:44.:26:50.

movement around the court is good. He has all of the shots. He is

:26:51.:26:55.

tremendously athletic. He hunts things down so well. What does

:26:56.:27:03.

Grigor Dimitrov do well? He does most things well. All things well.

:27:04.:27:07.

He has not got a standout weapon but he is good in all departments. Well,

:27:08.:27:14.

yes, that is fair. He is very athletic. Covers the court

:27:15.:27:19.

beautifully. Beforehand I think could develop into a Federer like

:27:20.:27:26.

forehand. It is a big shot. And the first serve again with just a little

:27:27.:27:32.

more consistency could also become a huge weapon. That was tough for

:27:33.:27:40.

Ward. He was so close to the tie-breaker, the penalty shoot out.

:27:41.:27:46.

Anything can really happen in that. He had done so well. He had played

:27:47.:27:51.

pretty solidly so far. He has done well and he continues to do well.

:27:52.:27:56.

This is a real test for him. The start of the second set. It is easy

:27:57.:28:05.

to just have a slight lapse. It is also... When you win a tight first

:28:06.:28:11.

set like that, it is easy for a guy like Dimitrov to just relax and know

:28:12.:28:16.

that he has a slight question, he can play a little more like he would

:28:17.:28:21.

in practice. The real danger is that Dimitrov just powers away. Plays the

:28:22.:28:26.

sort of tennis that we know he can play. That would be an imposing

:28:27.:28:37.

proposition for James Ward. There is nothing -- he is nothing if not

:28:38.:28:41.

psychologically strong, James Ward. He is a fighter. He will have to be

:28:42.:28:47.

now. This man is a set to the good and ready to serve to start the

:28:48.:28:48.

second. relax more and open his shoulders.

:28:49.:29:32.

It is not quite happening yet. We return to ace again. -- we return

:29:33.:30:18.

to Hawk-Eye again. It was wide. UMPIRE: Mr Dimitrov has two

:30:19.:31:23.

challenges remaining. COMMENTATOR: A bit of an opening

:31:24.:31:33.

here, perhaps, for Ward. Well, troubled for just a moment on

:31:34.:32:30.

his serve, but he sees himself through that service game.

:32:31.:32:48.

What a setting it is. I think the weather forecast is pretty good for

:32:49.:32:57.

the rest of the week, in contrast to last year, when we sat and shivered.

:32:58.:33:25.

In steps the umpire, again. Well, Cedric has been spot on and

:33:26.:33:37.

thus far. He is worried now, look at him. He

:33:38.:33:43.

is watching the big screen. You are right. He holed my wisdom.

:33:44.:33:56.

-- behold. It is a replay of the point.

:33:57.:34:25.

UMPIRE: Mr M5 back door has one challenge remaining.

:34:26.:34:35.

-- Mr Dimitrov as one challenge remaining. Ward's turning to find

:34:36.:34:39.

the lines. Great body serve, didn't give

:34:40.:34:56.

Dimitrov any chance to swing at the ball.

:34:57.:35:29.

James Ward. First service game and a very comfortable hold.

:35:30.:35:31.

That was an impressive game. That was a big serve.

:35:32.:36:59.

The speed gun on court says 136 mph. We stress again, it is a little

:37:00.:37:07.

bit generous, but still quick. And another one. And Dimitrov with

:37:08.:37:15.

hold to love. He is doing a good job of keeping

:37:16.:37:19.

the pressure on. I am just looking at Grigor

:37:20.:37:26.

Dimitrov's player box there. It is not your usual coaching team.

:37:27.:37:34.

French Open champion is in the house.

:37:35.:37:45.

What a couple. Imagine the children, the tennis genes, they would rival

:37:46.:37:57.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. Maybe let us not go there yet.

:37:58.:38:02.

I am planning for the wedding, buying myself a hat.

:38:03.:38:10.

But, I see it again, a big, big talent. He is looking good so far,

:38:11.:38:20.

doing enough. Wrong serve in the second set, and

:38:21.:38:26.

James Ward still very much in this match.

:38:27.:38:31.

Just have to wait for everyone to settle down and find their seats.

:38:32.:38:40.

Very impressive how cool Ward has been in those little tight

:38:41.:39:03.

exchanges. Well, that was a surprising miss,

:39:04.:40:09.

really, because Dimitrov was in good position.

:40:10.:40:16.

Roger Rasheed, coaching Dimitrov now.

:40:17.:40:43.

Good coverage by Grigor Dimitrov. He has a gift for moving on a grass

:40:44.:40:51.

court, he really has. The way he slides around so confidently.

:40:52.:41:29.

And there it is, the break of serve in the second set.

:41:30.:41:37.

And he takes this match by the scruff of the neck.

:41:38.:41:46.

Roger Rasheed there, Grigor Dimitrov worked for a long time with another

:41:47.:41:52.

coach after going to the Academy in Paris.

:41:53.:41:56.

It is a bit chilly in the shade over there in the nice seats.

:41:57.:42:09.

He might just motor away with this one now. I hope for James Ward's

:42:10.:42:15.

sake that he does not. That is the way you want to

:42:16.:42:45.

consolidate the break. Well, there we are, Grigor Dimitrov

:42:46.:43:13.

with an emphatic hold moves closer to a place in the next round and it

:43:14.:43:17.

may be the end of the British challenge. We saw Dan Evans going to

:43:18.:43:21.

today, James Ward struggling year, Andy Murray makes his appearance

:43:22.:43:22.

tomorrow. STUDIO: He is the defending champion

:43:23.:43:55.

here and at Wimbledon. He makes his first appearance and

:43:56.:44:01.

this lady, Amelie Mauresmo, will be in his corner, making her first

:44:02.:44:04.

appearance here at the Queen's Club and her first official day working

:44:05.:44:08.

with Andy Murray. We will watch that match tomorrow

:44:09.:44:13.

against Henry Paul Matthew -- Henri Paul Matthew. -- Paul-Henri

:44:14.:44:20.

Mathieu. Coverage gets under way when play

:44:21.:44:26.

starts at 12:30pm. Stan Wawrinka, what a start he has

:44:27.:44:30.

come against Marcos Baghdatis, who won the Nottingham Challenger last

:44:31.:44:36.

week. Those games tomorrow afternoon, join

:44:37.:44:41.

for that. We will be here until 6pm on BBC

:44:42.:44:43.

Two. COMMENTATOR: Yes, as tough a defence

:44:44.:44:53.

of a title as can be for Andy Murray, a very strong line-up this

:44:54.:44:54.

year. Can James Ward find a way back into

:44:55.:45:06.

this match? First task, hold serve. That wonderful three backhand, the

:45:07.:45:57.

single-handed backhand of Dimitrov. It has got James Ward in a bit of

:45:58.:46:02.

trouble again. -- that wonderful free backhand.

:46:03.:46:08.

That will do. That is exactly what the doctor

:46:09.:46:17.

ordered, Ward needs a couple of more first service like that.

:46:18.:46:36.

Good anticipation by Dimitrov. He picked it right, just slightly

:46:37.:46:41.

mistimed the passing shot. That is wonderful, great reflexes,

:46:42.:47:10.

improvisation... Hard to take for Ward, but grand

:47:11.:47:14.

stuff from Dimitrov. We saw couple of times yesterday

:47:15.:47:17.

when James Ward went crosscourt in situations like that, the obvious

:47:18.:47:22.

choice, and Dimitrov picks it. Still in there.

:47:23.:47:51.

And the crowd appreciate that one. James Ward still trying to just

:47:52.:48:54.

picked himself up. A cry of, on. -- a cry of

:48:55.:49:16.

Again, just a suggestion of a chance for Ward.

:49:17.:49:34.

While! Wild on the second serve. And James Ward may have a couple of

:49:35.:49:43.

chances. Yes, hardly an impressive game here

:49:44.:49:49.

from Dimitrov. It is how the players play the

:49:50.:50:08.

points when their backs are against the wall. That is what makes the

:50:09.:50:16.

great players. Still a break point to face.

:50:17.:50:42.

Wonderful stuff! James Ward has the break back, and how he had to work

:50:43.:50:52.

for it. The defence of Dimitrov was superb,

:50:53.:50:56.

but eventually yields, and James Ward is back in there fighting.

:50:57.:51:03.

Well, that last point, a great illustration of why Grigor Dimitrov

:51:04.:51:10.

is such a fascinating guide to watch, so athletic, he can do so

:51:11.:51:14.

many things on the court, and yet James Ward managed to stay with him,

:51:15.:51:21.

and in fact outsmarted him. Huge point.

:51:22.:51:29.

Dimitrov failed to stay upright at least a couple of times in that

:51:30.:51:36.

rally. Ward had plenty of chances to lose

:51:37.:51:46.

his nerve. Dimitrov, of course, made things very awkward.

:51:47.:51:54.

In the end, Ward with full credit. This is the game, though, to

:51:55.:52:17.

consolidate that break back, Ward serving, 3-4.

:52:18.:52:29.

Sometimes you worked so hard for a break, come into the next game and

:52:30.:52:33.

you are not quite with it. Well, he is serving against the wind

:52:34.:52:46.

here at this end, so it is not going to be easy.

:52:47.:52:51.

Or it wouldn't be easy in any circumstances, especially not with

:52:52.:52:56.

the pressure on him as it is now. He works out, Roger Rasheed, doesn't

:52:57.:53:04.

he? And the loose one, straight onto the

:53:05.:53:42.

back foot again. Right up against it, three break points, and the

:53:43.:53:46.

crowd will try and lift him, but this will be mighty tough for James

:53:47.:53:47.

Ward. Again, another one bites the dust.

:53:48.:54:27.

Ward is doing everything he has to do here.

:54:28.:54:46.

Just one more to go, and he is taken by Dimitrov. He breaks back and he

:54:47.:55:00.

will serve for the match. It was Dimitrov's athleticism there,

:55:01.:55:05.

really, that put the pressure on Ward. He hit a perfect drop volley.

:55:06.:55:10.

Not up to the task. So, for a place in the next round.

:55:11.:55:47.

It is interesting how the court seems to get more slippery as it

:55:48.:56:03.

gets drier. It didn't ever used to be like that.

:56:04.:57:00.

It is remarkable how accurate guys like Dimitrov with that squash shot

:57:01.:57:17.

now. He hits it so confidently. On the brink, two match points.

:57:18.:57:55.

Finished with an ace, with a flourish, from one of the brightest

:57:56.:58:07.

talents in the game. He knocks out a James Ward, who was

:58:08.:58:11.

gallant, but just not quite good enough to beat this man, who will be

:58:12.:58:15.

tough to beat. Yes, a good performance from James

:58:16.:58:21.

Ward. Dimitrov, a real threat to win this title.

:58:22.:58:23.

James Ward is out, Dimitrov through in straight sets.

:58:24.:58:28.

STUDIO: The number four seed, Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 13 in the WorldCom

:58:29.:58:34.

is safely through, a semifinalist -- semifinalist here to year ago.

:58:35.:58:42.

This is the result so far on Centre Court, Feliciano Lopez, that match

:58:43.:58:46.

held over from last night, he is through.

:58:47.:58:48.

Kevin Anderson overpowered Dan Evans, the weld card of Great

:58:49.:58:52.

Britain. Mowing, toss if it's pulled off as a surprise bidding at Marin

:58:53.:58:57.

Cilic, and as you see Grigor Dimitrov is through. We are coming

:58:58.:58:59.

to the end of the coverage on BBC Two but there is still another match

:59:00.:59:03.

to come, James Duckworth against Tomas Berdych, and if you want to

:59:04.:59:07.

watch that it is on the BBC Red Button.

:59:08.:59:11.

David Goffin is through, Marcos Baghdatis plays Stan Wawrinka

:59:12.:59:14.

tomorrow, and Sam Querrey, another former champion, is through also.

:59:15.:59:21.

On the red button it starts at 12:30pm, but we will be year on BBC

:59:22.:59:24.

Two at 1pm. The big guns come out to -- on

:59:25.:59:30.

Centre Court tomorrow, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried

:59:31.:59:32.

Tsonga. Hope you will join us, from all of

:59:33.:59:34.

us here, goodbye.
