Quarter-Finals - Part 2 Queen's

Welcome back to the Championships. Quarterfinals day here, and as you

can see, the covers are off, the players are back on and we can

resume this match between Milos Raonic and Roberto Bautista Agut

back. Raonic was leading four games to one. It has been one-way traffic

so far in this match, and coach John McEnroe is delighted with Raonic

taking that opening set. So we can join it now live just before the

start of the second set, and rejoin John Lloyd and Andrew Cotter.

ANDREW COTTER: It will have to be an entirely different performance from

Roberta Wright is that -- Roberto Bautista Agut. The rain delay hasn't

changed anything. Raonic looking very comfortable indeed. Number

three seed, but it is the number six seed, Bautista serving to start the

set. JOHN LLOYD: That service fast but it

is just not getting the job done. Well, this match could slip away

very quickly from Bautista. He needs to rouse himself from his slumbers.

How easy it was the Bautista earlier today against Donald Young, but this

is an entirely different level. JOHN LLOYD: Oh, nicely done.

Bautista lost his footing a little bit on that backhand slice, and then

he just slips here a little bit. Then he makes up his mind and

decides to move in, but it was too late by then, he couldn't cover the

net and get in their quick enough. Break point.

A sorry effort, and you can't get behind the first server of Raonic.

Right at the start of the second set, and Raonic has not been broken

in this tournament, is rarely broken, so a mountain to climb for

the Spaniard. You can see the theory of hitting body serves doesn't exist

with Raonic. He doesn't bother with that, he just goes four aces, and he

mixes them up, it is beautifully done here. But why go for the body

serve when you can serve as many clean aces as he does, I suppose. It

is a marvellous serve, but he is not giving you any reading as to whether

he is going out wide or down the middle, he can do both with perfect

ball toss and disguise, you can't tell where he is serving. He came up

against equal firepower in the first round, in Nick Kyrgios. But here,

eight aces to zero, it is an unequal contest.

Why bother with the body serve? I think if he came up against Djokovic

or Murray where their return of serve out wide is so good, he might

throw a few more of those in, change the pattern up, but he doesn't need

to today. That is too good, though!

Cross-court in front of a despairing Raonic. That is the best point he

has played today. Raonic a bit casual, and that is the only danger

for the Canadian, losing his concentration, because at the moment

this is barely a practice session for him. He had a tough match

against Nick Kyrgios, and then two tough set against your E Veseli.

That is a wicked delivery. It comes at you at such height, as well. It

doesn't get as high as John Isner, but it is up there. And such a

relaxed motion. One large spot of rain on our

commentary booth window. Hope it is a loner.

That was not a lesson in good footwork on the baseline there.

Just a little bit more drizzle now, I am sorry to report. But again,

there is plenty of blue sky up there as well. Plenty is perhaps an

exaggeration. There is some blue sky up there.

Well, mutterings from Raonic, he doesn't want to do himself a

mischief, and looking at those skies we just saw...

For a Raonic, for him to want to go off, it means it is slippery,

because he is winning this match, the momentum is totally with him.

The umpire says play on. He is not happy, Raonic, with the

surface still. He is pleading his case with the umpire.

You can certainly see a few more drops coming down now, but it is

still OK to play, and it is the only thing that can really stop Milos

Raonic at the moment, I think. He is talking to the umpire again. He

doesn't like it. We have had this discussion during this week many

times, it is very difficult about who gets the final say. Obviously

the umpire has the final say, but can an umpire really tell what is

fit to play and what isn't? It is a difficult choice in that way. I

suppose the referee will make the final decision, but other than

carrying on... It is not too bad out there just

now, but it is all about the playing surface. This is the worst surface

in the world for any moisture, although hard courts in America

obviously where they play the US Open is the same sort of thing, it

can get very dangerous pretty quickly. Just trying to work out

what direction the weather is going. I think that dark stuff is going

away. Shades on, the sun is shining, it is moving over, so I think Fergus

Murphy has done the right thing, held his nerve, stared down Raonic.

UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, take your seats, please. The good thing,

the wettest part of the court is always towards the back where it

tends to get a little bit more moisture back there, and Raonic

doesn't go back there. That looks nice! It is fairly bleak, but the

weather is coming from behind that camera there. All is positive.

It is backing it up well, beforehand is looking good today.

Well, a little bit of fortune clipping the top of the net, but it

was a wonderful return anyway. Trying to serve- volley on a second

serve, you can see he is not getting close enough in behind it.

He didn't mean that shot! But he will take it. He needs some sort of

a break to get him back in this match. At least he has a slight

chance to break this serve, but that was a complete misfit. -- mis-hit.

It is so easy to get frustrated when you play against someone like

Raonic. You work hard, get yourself into the point, and then the serve

comes right down into the corner like that, and you are sometimes

just walking side to side without even touching the ball.

Raonic holds, and maintains that advantage in this second set.

Bautista knows about Raonic, they have played three times and he has

lost all three, but he came very close in their last meeting which

was in Shanghai last year, he was couple of points away from winning

it at one stage. Their first meeting on grass,

though. Fortunately, you don't want to keep

eating those kinds of shots. The second serve his just sitting there,

a good hit from Raonic, and how he did that, but you can't keep doing

that sort of thing. 98 mph on that server is not much

pace, that's for sure. Again, it is a great return from

Raonic, but it is not of the speediest serve. 92 mph, and didn't

get it out wide enough. But it is another hold for Bautista.

Those players are just sitting there.

Still the advantage to Raonic, who has piled down 13 aces so far to

zero from Bautista Agut. Enjoying some serving demonstration from

Raonic. It is just magnificent. You can imagine all the targets that he

hits out in practice, they put up those targets, and he will just be

hammering down serves there, so it feels like he can do that in his

sleep. He almost can, it is unbelievable, the accuracy he has.

But what Bautista hasn't done today, he hasn't taken care of business on

his side of the court with his serve. There is not much he could

have done with the Raonic serve. You have to try to hang in there until

at least 3-3 or 4-4, but if you lose your opening service game is, you

are in big trouble. He hasn't played well today at all.

UMPIRE: Time. He is ready, but Raonic taking all the time he was

entitled to. Kyrgios was very keen to get going, a brisk player, and

Raonic was slowing things down, as he is perfectly entitled to do.

That just separates the good servers from the really great ones. That

second serve was 118 mph. That is why I suppose he can bully

some levels at a player below him, but as you were saying, when he

comes up against the better players, the great return is, then he has to

look to other parts of his game which perhaps do need to be lifted

and improved. But Bautista Agut has no answer at

the moment to the server of Raonic. You can just imagine if you looked

at his matches how many balls on the returns of serve where they do come

back that are around that service line, because players just barely

get the ball back, and how many times he has that forehand from just

inside the service box which he can do some damage with. He must

practice that all the time. A few too many unforced errors. He

is a high-calibre player, Roberto Bautista-Agut, he has won twice this

year, but he is just not quite up to his usual level this afternoon.

It is wide, it is a hold for Roberto Bautista-Agut, so he still has some

hopes, a slim hope, but he has the break advantage and very much the

advantage in this match. SUE BARKER: We are staying with this

ANDREW COTTER: And the winner of this one, which does at the moment

look as if it will be Roberto Bautista Agut will play either

Bernard Tomic or Gilles Muller. It is just ticking along at the moment

with a sense of the inevitable, because it is very hard to see this

man being broken. JOHN LLOYD: As long as he keeps his

concentration, he is two service holds away from winning this match.

The Spaniard hasn't come up with anything different, moved up, got

any closer to the serve. He is almost accepting the inevitable. It

doesn't seem there is much thought going in. I know it is difficult

against Raonic, because he doesn't give you any rhythm, but this is a

very comfortable match so far for the Canadian. He was nearly a

finalist at the Australian Open this year, lost in five sets in the semis

to Andy Murray. And close to the semifinals here.

It is a snub of 14 for Raonic. -- ace number 14 for Raonic.

OK, where do I stand here? Might as well gamble and take off a second

early and go one way or the other. You could hear that one. That was

just... A missile. Three points, three aces.

What do you do, John? Nothing you can do. Talking to some of the great

return as of the game, that even they in that game there would have

no answer. The serve was so accurate, and you would literally

have had to have taken off a second or two early to get any of those

serves. So, now serving to stay in the match.

That is rather cruel. Throwing in the Hat, if not the towel. He will

be wishing the colour of this court was read right now, a nice clay

court where he could be sliding into this one and not do that afterwards.

You can just see Raonic they're not that flexible getting back into

position on that half-volley he had to hit.

First double fault of the match for the Spaniard.

UMPIRE: Quiet, please. APPLAUSE

That is another hold for Bautista. UMPIRE: New balls, please.

What do you think would have to improve around itch? There are a few

players just below the very top level, they threaten to get there,

but what should improving his game? I think it is just the flexibility.

That is something, the hands, his hands sometimes, he doesn't have

that much feel, but I think that is something you can improve a little

bit on, but you are not going to become a master at it like Murray or

Djokovic in that way. So he has to keep working on his strengths and

keep pushing forwards, and sometimes still, he hasn't done it in this

match because it has been easy for him, but sometimes there is a

hesitation about moving forward and imposing himself, and with someone

like Raonic, when you have that sort of wingspan and the power he has of

the forehand on the serve, you have got to be thinking of getting into

the forecourt as much as possible, going out his opponents, don't let

them breathe. Sometimes he just hesitates a little, particularly at

crucial points, and I think if he improves that, he is dangerous. Who

wants to play him when he serves like this? Only one extended run at

Wimbledon, he reached the semifinals two years ago, and lost to Federer.

one, and it certainly seems like Raonic is almost there, will play

Gilles Muller or Bernard Tomic, there are match coming up after

We come to this point, Raonic serving for the match, and suddenly

the first break point that Roberto Bautista-Agut has had.

UMPIRE: Mr Bautista is challenging the call on the left service line.

The ball was called in. He is pretty confident that this one is out. Call

challenge was immediate. UMPIRE: The call stands. Deuce.

Well, that was... No one was expecting that.

UMPIRE: Mr Bautista Agut has two challenges remaining. As the clock

just hits an hour, things are slowing down a little in this set.

And through he goes fittingly with an ace! Andy Murray is through,

Marin Cilic is through, and now the number three
