Hello and welcome to the Queen's Club in the heart of West London.

:00:41.:00:47.

This prodigious tournament signals the start of the grass court season,

:00:48.:00:50.

and that means Wimbledon isn't far-away. But these a gone

:00:51.:00:56.

Championships shouldn't be considered just a warm up for S W

:00:57.:01:00.

19. Winning here is a highlight in any one's career. It is also one of

:01:01.:01:06.

the best loved tournament by the players, well organised and with the

:01:07.:01:10.

courts just about perfect. So no great surprise that we have another

:01:11.:01:16.

exceptional line-up in 2017. These players are here and ready to play.

:01:17.:01:30.

# Here comes the summer # Here comes the summer

:01:31.:01:48.

COMMENTATOR: That is a beautiful shot. What a shot from Cilic.

:01:49.:02:01.

# Here comes the summer COMMENTATOR: The supreme

:02:02.:02:09.

performance. A first-class tournament.

:02:10.:02:16.

What a line-up, a truly international field. But someone is

:02:17.:02:23.

missing, I hear you say. It is our very own King of Queen's, Andy

:02:24.:02:27.

Murray. I'm pleased to say he is back here as defending champion,

:02:28.:02:31.

world number one, and has his sights firmly on lifting that famous trophy

:02:32.:02:33.

for a record extending sixth time. UMPIRE: Game, set and match, Murray.

:02:34.:02:54.

COMMENTATOR: The first British winner at Queen's in 71 years. A

:02:55.:02:59.

brilliant winner of Andy Murray, he is the champion here again. His

:03:00.:03:02.

third title at the Queen's Club. Title number four Bex and a bit of

:03:03.:03:25.

history here in West London. Five Championships at the Queen's Club

:03:26.:03:32.

for Andy Murray. What a record he has, and what a few years it has

:03:33.:03:37.

been, starting in 2009, how he has changed over the years. Here he is

:03:38.:03:44.

just before, practising today, going through the motions with his fitness

:03:45.:03:49.

trainer Matt Little, building up the strength, going for those returns of

:03:50.:03:55.

serve. It was a wonderful final last year when he beat Milos Raonic, and

:03:56.:04:00.

he went on three weeks later to win Wimbledon. Will history repeat

:04:01.:04:06.

itself again? He is not the only person who is back here at the

:04:07.:04:10.

Queen's Club, John Lloyd and Andrew Castle are with me once again. How

:04:11.:04:17.

he has changed since 2009, not just a haircut, but he has toned himself

:04:18.:04:25.

up, he is this complete athlete now. He is so powerful, you look at him

:04:26.:04:30.

on court and think he will never get tired, and you can see that in the

:04:31.:04:33.

fifth set, his opponent starts wilting and he is still as strong as

:04:34.:04:38.

he was in the first set, he just looks like he can go on forever.

:04:39.:04:42.

Perfect preparation he has had coming into the grass court season,

:04:43.:04:46.

he looks amazing. And he wasn't looking so amazing before the French

:04:47.:04:50.

Open, it was considered at the end of last year when he won five

:04:51.:04:54.

tournament in a row and ended up as world number one, that effort

:04:55.:04:58.

drained him, a new baby at home, life changes, and then at the

:04:59.:05:02.

beginning of this year, some illness, perhaps not quite the

:05:03.:05:05.

physicality. Use say illness, Shingles drains you for a long time,

:05:06.:05:12.

even when you recover. So going into the French Open, he had to get some

:05:13.:05:17.

wins and grind some matches out and feel the heat of competition, which

:05:18.:05:22.

he did. A couple of wins at the beginning, they were not the best

:05:23.:05:25.

Andy Murray, but he got the winning habit, so he is ready now to go

:05:26.:05:30.

ahead and try to defend here and Wimbledon, and who's to say he is

:05:31.:05:34.

not the favourite? And just one of those sessions with Matt Little,

:05:35.:05:41.

watching him. It was practising his return of serve. Just don't go near

:05:42.:05:45.

these guys were now training, they give off an aero physicality that

:05:46.:05:48.

even in the old days few of them did. Ilie Nastase was supreme, Ivan

:05:49.:05:56.

Lendl had bad air, and Andy Murray certainly one of them. And showing

:05:57.:06:02.

how difficult it is to move from the clay onto the grass and what is

:06:03.:06:06.

needed to succeed on grass, it is a different game. It is a different

:06:07.:06:10.

game, but we have that extra week of play now. Before we had that two

:06:11.:06:15.

weeks, it was the most ridiculous thing in our sport that we had that

:06:16.:06:22.

Grand Slam, the French, then two weeks and you are Wimbledon, but it

:06:23.:06:26.

is totally different now that you have that extra week, even though

:06:27.:06:30.

the grass bounces higher, it is still different than any other

:06:31.:06:33.

surface, and the players appreciate it, but you have to do different

:06:34.:06:37.

training for grass, it is a totally different surface than the others.

:06:38.:06:48.

Borg never had any trouble going from clay to grass! Here is what

:06:49.:06:53.

Andy had to say. I have played some of my best tennis here over the

:06:54.:06:59.

years. They have made some changes this year, the Centre Court is

:07:00.:07:02.

bigger, looks great, the courts are always in perfect condition, so it

:07:03.:07:06.

is a great way to kick off the grass court season and it has helped me

:07:07.:07:09.

prepare for Wimbledon every year in my career. Winning any tournament is

:07:10.:07:15.

great, but one as historical as this and as strong as this as well, the

:07:16.:07:22.

field this year is top-quality. Unfortunately a couple of late

:07:23.:07:29.

withdrawals with Rafa and Del Potro, but Saddam is here, he beat me in

:07:30.:07:33.

the French and made the final there. -- Stan is here and he beat me in

:07:34.:07:43.

the French, and Dimitrov. This is always a big boost going into

:07:44.:07:46.

Wimbledon. There is a lot of pressure at this time of the year, a

:07:47.:07:49.

lot of pressure and attention, but we also have the scope of being able

:07:50.:07:55.

to get home and sleep in my own bed and have the support of friends and

:07:56.:08:01.

family at all of my matches, so that is the best part about this period

:08:02.:08:05.

of the year, it is nice to be home for a few weeks.

:08:06.:08:08.

We will talk a little more about Andy Murray, but we are going to

:08:09.:08:13.

head out to Centre Court right now where Adrian Mannarino and

:08:14.:08:19.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battle. Nick Kyrgios is always one to watch, and

:08:20.:08:22.

then Kyle Edmund finishes the line-up on Centre Court today, we

:08:23.:08:26.

will finish the chat in a moment, but this is going a bit quicker than

:08:27.:08:32.

we were thinking, there is a back injury, we hear, from Adrian

:08:33.:08:35.

Mannarino, so let's join this match live. To bring us up to date, Peter

:08:36.:08:38.

Fleming and Andrew Cotter. ANDREW COTTER: He is serving all

:08:39.:08:51.

right here, Manna Reno, but he hasn't been looking too comfortable,

:08:52.:08:55.

and he has had that treatment for what looked like an upper back

:08:56.:09:00.

injury. Seems to be moving OK. A couple of service games now for

:09:01.:09:16.

Mannarino where he has held to love. PETER FLEMING: And often when you do

:09:17.:09:21.

have an upper back issue, the muscles are in spasm, you can move,

:09:22.:09:29.

but fast, jerky movements are not at all comfortable, so it inhibits your

:09:30.:09:33.

shotmaking sometimes, and inhibits your self belief, and that is what

:09:34.:09:40.

seems to have taken the biggest hit for Mannarino today, he doesn't seem

:09:41.:09:45.

to believe that he can make inroads into Tsonga's defences.

:09:46.:09:59.

It is just wide. It was right on the line. I heard a call. That is

:10:00.:10:12.

beautiful from Mannarino. One of the best points on the match, which has

:10:13.:10:17.

been a little bit hit and miss. Tsonga is in control, but he hasn't

:10:18.:10:19.

had to be at his very best. And I think that is an aspect of

:10:20.:10:47.

grass court tennis that suits Tsonga. Because his service so

:10:48.:10:53.

dominant and he can end points so quickly as he did there, he can

:10:54.:10:58.

often just relax during an opponent's service game, not get too

:10:59.:11:05.

wound up. And it doesn't really hurt him.

:11:06.:11:32.

He is consistently up over 130 mph now with his Serbs. -- serves.

:11:33.:11:52.

And again, stringing together a good few points, Tsonga, in the first set

:11:53.:12:01.

in particular there were some good from Tsonga, but a lot of loose

:12:02.:12:06.

stuff as well, just feeling his way into his grass court season. Second

:12:07.:12:10.

set he is much more consistent, and he is not too far away, you suspect,

:12:11.:12:13.

from a place in the next round. Of course, Tsonga is in the top

:12:14.:12:29.

quarter, so that is a potentially very difficult quarterfinal matchup

:12:30.:12:37.

for Andy Murray should both of those win their first two matches. This

:12:38.:12:45.

event has had a couple of late call office that Andy Murray was

:12:46.:12:48.

highlighting in particular, of Nadal, Del Potro, but there is still

:12:49.:12:55.

verdict, the Rinker, Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios. He plays today on

:12:56.:13:02.

Centre Court against Donald Young, and since it became a 500 event, it

:13:03.:13:08.

was always a great event, but it does attract great yet in the field.

:13:09.:13:20.

Didn't even mention Marin Cilic, John Isner, Sam Querrey in there as

:13:21.:13:30.

well. Mannarino serving to stay in it.

:13:31.:13:38.

Sam Querrey, if he beats the British wild card Cameron Norrie in the

:13:39.:13:50.

first round, you can assume he would be Murray's second-round opponent,

:13:51.:13:57.

where Murray plays Aljaz Bedene in his first match.

:13:58.:15:29.

Tsonga seems to be hitting at things here casually, he knows he has got a

:15:30.:15:33.

service game to come in any case. But he might still do it early. Yes,

:15:34.:16:08.

and as relaxed as he looks, there is no question that he would far prefer

:16:09.:16:12.

to win it right here rather than having to go through the ordeal of

:16:13.:16:14.

serving for it. Mannarino was in a position of some

:16:15.:16:35.

strength in this service game, but Tsonga now with match point.

:16:36.:16:54.

And there it is, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the first winner on Centre Court at

:16:55.:17:03.

these Aegon championships, and untroubled, unruffled moves into the

:17:04.:17:07.

next round. The number five seed will be given tougher tests than he

:17:08.:17:10.

has faced today from Adrian Mannarino. A smile from Jo-Wilfried

:17:11.:17:16.

Tsonga, a very popular winner here on Centre Court, to get us under

:17:17.:17:26.

way. Really good start from Joe Tsonga. Adrian Mannarino just didn't

:17:27.:17:33.

quite have it today, didn't have the belief that he could challenge

:17:34.:17:38.

Tsonga. Yes, Mannarino has better than that, and perhaps the injury

:17:39.:17:44.

for which he was treated was more than a factor than we thought,

:17:45.:17:49.

because that is a bit of a thumping from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, through to

:17:50.:17:52.

the second round. He will face either Gilles Muller or as a

:17:53.:18:06.

-- Basilashvili of Georgia. Andy Murray is looking to make it six

:18:07.:18:21.

wins here at Queen's Club, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, finalist here in

:18:22.:18:24.

the past, is through to the next round, and again, he will be very

:18:25.:18:29.

happy that he hasn't spent too much time, he has had a run out, got some

:18:30.:18:33.

grass under his feet, hasn't built up too much of a sweat, save a bit

:18:34.:18:36.

of energy. Still very, very popular, the

:18:37.:18:53.

32-year-old Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enjoying himself here at the Queen's

:18:54.:18:58.

Club, playing here for the first time since 2014, he has given it a

:18:59.:19:02.

miss the last couple of years. The man who reached the final five years

:19:03.:19:09.

ago where he lost to Andy Murray, and every chance of going that far

:19:10.:19:16.

again this year. So, safely through to the next round after that win

:19:17.:19:21.

over Adrian Mannarino, and ready now to share his thoughts with John

:19:22.:19:27.

Inverdale. Many congratulations, how was that

:19:28.:19:31.

for a first go on the grass this year? It was a good match, I played

:19:32.:19:39.

pretty well. I started well, but he came back and played strong, and I

:19:40.:19:43.

had to play my best tennis to go over him, so yes I am really happy

:19:44.:19:48.

today, happy to be here in London, when the weather is like this it is

:19:49.:19:52.

just an amazing city, so I will enjoy it. Everybody in the crowd,

:19:53.:19:56.

and a bigger crowd this year, bigger Centre Court, everybody was aware of

:19:57.:19:59.

the need for them. What was it like on the court itself? As you can see,

:20:00.:20:06.

I sweat a lot, but yes of course, the most important when it is hot

:20:07.:20:11.

like this to drink a lot, so I give you advice! Free advice from

:20:12.:20:17.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, hydrate! One of the big differences, the weather on

:20:18.:20:22.

the first day last year was terrible, and year ago, in the last

:20:23.:20:26.

you, you have become a dad of course, so your life is changed. Are

:20:27.:20:30.

they travelling with you? How has that changed for you? They are not

:20:31.:20:35.

travelling with me this week, but most of the time they are with me.

:20:36.:20:39.

It is difficult to be far from home, far from my wife and my kid, it is

:20:40.:20:44.

not easy, but I deal with it, and I hope I will be able to play good

:20:45.:20:49.

tennis this week to get back the trophy. It is a good start, well

:20:50.:20:53.

done, good to see you back here. Thank you.

:20:54.:20:58.

SUE BARKER: Great entertainers, great to see him back here at the

:20:59.:21:02.

Queen's Club, a comfortable win for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded five East

:21:03.:21:06.

championship, and more I'd attended to come, Grigor Dimitrov with his

:21:07.:21:10.

ninth straight appearance here up against Ryan Harrison from the

:21:11.:21:14.

United States. Then Donald Young up against another great entertainer,

:21:15.:21:17.

who knows what will happen in that match with Nick Kyrgios. And Kyle

:21:18.:21:22.

Edmund finishes the line-up up against Denis Shapovalov. The last

:21:23.:21:34.

time they met was at that Davis Cup, the deciding rubber with that

:21:35.:21:43.

terrible accident when Shapovalov hit the ball in temp and hit the

:21:44.:21:49.

umpire in the eye. And they are now friends. Yes, he learned a painful

:21:50.:21:54.

lesson there, he is a very talented player, and grass is going to be

:21:55.:21:58.

different, he will be dangerous on this surface. That was a tough

:21:59.:22:03.

lesson for him to learn, but he's a young kid and he busy didn't mean

:22:04.:22:06.

it, he meant to hit the ball up into the air, he got his trajectory

:22:07.:22:16.

wrong, ... I was speaking to him, they are laughing about it now, but

:22:17.:22:21.

of all the players, if you are a silly young boy, which every young

:22:22.:22:25.

boy who plays tennis is of course one point, smack it somewhere where

:22:26.:22:30.

there is definitely no body, which is up in the air. You can't bear to

:22:31.:22:38.

watch it, actually. It was quite a serious injury and I think it

:22:39.:22:41.

requires surgery, but I'm glad he has recovered. The Davis Cup coach

:22:42.:22:47.

from Canada still looking after Shapovalov, but that was definitely

:22:48.:22:51.

a very poor moment. Dear member when Tim Henman hit the line girl,

:22:52.:22:58.

literally just a terrible mistake. Just an accident, one of those

:22:59.:23:01.

horrendous accidents. He is a great guy. And a great talent. He learned

:23:02.:23:07.

a big lesson possibly out there, didn't he? He did, and potentially a

:23:08.:23:13.

great player. He is one of these players that you look at and you see

:23:14.:23:17.

particularly on grass, he won Junior Wimbledon and you see the talent he

:23:18.:23:20.

has in his game, and if he learns to harness that power and not go for

:23:21.:23:24.

winners on every ball which he tends to do at the moment, he will be a

:23:25.:23:28.

future top ten, and on this surface, a very dangerous player. Not quite

:23:29.:23:30.

yet but he will be. And looking at the players here, we

:23:31.:23:40.

have talked about Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund will play Denis Shapovalov at

:23:41.:23:49.

the bottom of the draw. Are we saying Shapovalov? Shapovalov. We

:23:50.:24:04.

will take our cues from Sue! Nicholas Malouf, he can play a

:24:05.:24:10.

little as well! If you look at this draw here, he got match point

:24:11.:24:16.

against Andy Roddick that day, said the tournament staff here have put

:24:17.:24:20.

together an unbelievable tournament, and the tournament and its

:24:21.:24:24.

reputation. I looked at the standard of the qualifying which was

:24:25.:24:28.

absolutely amazing. Jeremy Chardy is a qualifier here in this tournament,

:24:29.:24:31.

normally you wouldn't be far off being seeded. And Herbert who he

:24:32.:24:37.

plays against is an incredibly gifted player, so a 32 draw. And the

:24:38.:24:46.

Julien Benneteau, a good doubles player. Great matches right from the

:24:47.:24:54.

word go, and I can't remember a first day like this before when you

:24:55.:24:56.

look at the order of play anything, they could all be semifinals and

:24:57.:25:00.

finals as far as I'm concerned. This is the top half, and equally, where

:25:01.:25:05.

do we start? Andy Murray will play Aljaz Bedene, and then Sam Querrey,

:25:06.:25:09.

former champion here. Talk about danger men that Murray has got to

:25:10.:25:15.

face. You have Gilles Muller, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Cilic and Isner,

:25:16.:25:21.

that could go on all night, nobody will lose serve there! Johnson is a

:25:22.:25:26.

good player, and then at the bottom you have Nick here is who is

:25:27.:25:28.

starting to show the maturity that in some ways we hope he will do.

:25:29.:25:34.

That top half is unbelievable. And that tricky Tipsarevic against

:25:35.:25:50.

Troicki, he elected to go pro a year early, he is the singles champion,

:25:51.:26:01.

21 years of age, a good player. This is Norrie, he hasn't spent a lot of

:26:02.:26:07.

time is out there, he went to college, he was stagnating here

:26:08.:26:09.

because he was at the National Tennis Centre, it didn't suit him,

:26:10.:26:13.

went to America, great move, and now he is the NCAA singles champion,

:26:14.:26:19.

side anything Sam Querrey will have it all his own way by any means. And

:26:20.:26:26.

Harrison, he is your player. He came in the last minute, he won the

:26:27.:26:31.

singles on the doubles, and he just won the French Open doubles last

:26:32.:26:36.

week, and he is now top 40 I believe, he was the Americas they

:26:37.:26:42.

cope, the pressure was a bit much on him, now he has come back, loves the

:26:43.:26:46.

game, he has matured and he is dangerous, that will be a dangerous

:26:47.:26:51.

match today. And he was the player of team tennis, the most valuable

:26:52.:26:55.

player? He won the singles, doubles, was most by label player. Dan Evans

:26:56.:27:00.

poll that, he was in my team, and Ryan Harrison kept my job for

:27:01.:27:09.

another year! He just fell into your lap! He won it for me. Dealer who

:27:10.:27:18.

most valuable coach of the year was? That is just inherited, isn't it? I

:27:19.:27:23.

have a huge ring, but it is said Bakic can't even get on my finger, I

:27:24.:27:29.

will show it you next time. Speaking about rings on fingers, Ryan is

:27:30.:27:32.

newly married this year, married to Lauren, I have just been speaking to

:27:33.:27:36.

her. Talk about a great influence on him. I used to play his old man in

:27:37.:27:48.

college, Harrison's auld. That old? We can hear some applause from

:27:49.:27:51.

behind here on Centre Court, the players are making their way out,

:27:52.:27:57.

and there is your man, and many fans here at Queen's Club.

:27:58.:28:04.

He was always the favourite player. It was wonderful, at the beginning

:28:05.:28:11.

of the year, you felt he made a breakthrough, winning Brisbane and

:28:12.:28:14.

getting to the Australian Open semis but it has not quite been built on.

:28:15.:28:20.

Every year you just keep thinking it is going to be his year and he is

:28:21.:28:24.

going to find the missing pieces to win that Grand Slam and you keep

:28:25.:28:28.

having false hopes. I hope he does win one, I love his game, one of the

:28:29.:28:33.

most elegant players on tour and one of the nicest guys. How great for

:28:34.:28:38.

the sport if he won a Grand Slam and you keep thinking if it is his year.

:28:39.:28:43.

Players mature at different ages, you can't say they are done by the

:28:44.:28:52.

age of 25, we can see with Wawrinka and Federer still going strong. This

:28:53.:28:54.

might be his year. He certainly has the weapons. When he smacked Andy

:28:55.:28:59.

Murray out of Wimbledon in three straight sets, I thought he would do

:29:00.:29:05.

that in that year in 2014 but he lost a semifinal to Djokovic on a

:29:06.:29:10.

very windy day which made good tennis difficult. But when

:29:11.:29:13.

conditions are right, he can be unplayable. He came on the next-door

:29:14.:29:21.

court the other day with Jamie Baker and it was fabulous. We have plenty

:29:22.:29:25.

to talk about, we haven't even touched on the fact that Rafael

:29:26.:29:29.

Nadal is not here, injured after the French Open. And Juan Martin Del

:29:30.:29:35.

Potro also not here but they will be back at Wimbledon. Still a wonderful

:29:36.:29:40.

line-up and I am sure the tournament director is absolutely delighted,

:29:41.:29:44.

Stephen Farrow is with John Inverdale. You can't guarantee this

:29:45.:29:47.

year 's tournament is going to be better than ever but it is bigger

:29:48.:29:51.

and we can see the new Centre Court. How proud I view of the changes you

:29:52.:29:57.

have done? Incredibly proud, with the weather like this, looking out

:29:58.:30:01.

at Centre Court and it looks fantastic. We have added 2600 seats

:30:02.:30:08.

and gone up to a capacity of 9500 and added a lot of extra facilities

:30:09.:30:12.

around the site for the public and hospitality and sponsors and it

:30:13.:30:17.

looks tremendous. Much more of a stadium the link. One of the great

:30:18.:30:22.

things about Queen's was the homely feel. How hard is to keep that

:30:23.:30:26.

balance? If you look at Centre Court right now we still have the

:30:27.:30:30.

clubhouse as a centrepiece. There are very few if any thoughts on the

:30:31.:30:34.

tennis calendar anywhere in the world which would match this for its

:30:35.:30:38.

beauty and intimacy. What has been interesting with the reaction of a

:30:39.:30:43.

lot of players, they have said, wow, it looks amazing. Some players have

:30:44.:30:48.

come in and I've pointed it out that we've expanded and they have said,

:30:49.:30:52.

have you? As far as they are concerned we still have the same

:30:53.:30:54.

atmosphere so we are pleased with how it looks. They were living in

:30:55.:30:59.

that zone! The one thing you have done this year is improving the

:31:00.:31:04.

weather! After last year, that was the big thing we had to improve on!

:31:05.:31:08.

Before we did the stand we made sure we cleared that up! Joking aside

:31:09.:31:16.

from in 34 degrees of heat there are health concerns for some of the

:31:17.:31:20.

crowd. That is absolutely right and we have been quite clear on the

:31:21.:31:24.

messages we are put out inside the ground and before spectators come,

:31:25.:31:29.

things like wearing sunscreen, our hat, drinking plenty of water. We

:31:30.:31:33.

installed more public taps yesterday so people could fill up their water

:31:34.:31:36.

bottles and we urge everybody to take precautions but having said

:31:37.:31:39.

that, we would much rather have it like this than how it was this time

:31:40.:31:44.

last year! And somebody I must mention who is not here to take

:31:45.:31:50.

advantage, to is about Ian and what he meant to Queen's Club. He was the

:31:51.:31:57.

tournament director from 95 until 2007 and this tournament gets better

:31:58.:32:00.

and bigger every year but we are very cognisant of the tournament

:32:01.:32:05.

that we are standing on the shoulders of the great work done by

:32:06.:32:09.

people for us and he did great work in establishing the reputation of

:32:10.:32:14.

this event and our thoughts are very much with him and his family and

:32:15.:32:18.

friends. We have his wife and daughters with us on final stake and

:32:19.:32:22.

we are very proud of Ian and are very proud to have them with us. And

:32:23.:32:28.

a final question come up to over 9000 now, is that the limit or can

:32:29.:32:33.

Queen's get bigger? Currently our site limit is 10,500 this league

:32:34.:32:39.

health and safety and emergency evacuation, we had to be cognisant

:32:40.:32:45.

of those. At the moment certainly this is as big as we can take it but

:32:46.:32:51.

9500, we are the biggest Centre Court for the ATP 500 tournaments,

:32:52.:32:55.

one of the biggest ones outside the Masters Series so we are big enough

:32:56.:32:59.

for now. And maybe some keep shining. I hope so! Indeed, a

:33:00.:33:06.

tournament loved by the players and much of that is down to Stephen

:33:07.:33:10.

Farrow and his team who do such a great job. We are here until 6pm

:33:11.:33:18.

every weekday on BBC Two. Covered on the BBC sport website and on the red

:33:19.:33:23.

button starts earlier every day at 12pm. And then from Monday the

:33:24.:33:30.

following week we are at Eastbourne for the Aegon International. Also

:33:31.:33:39.

next week and new for this year we have coverage of the qualifying

:33:40.:33:43.

rounds for Wimbledon on the BBC sport's website like events service.

:33:44.:33:48.

We will have key matches from each day and they will also be available

:33:49.:33:52.

to watch on your television via the red button depending on your digital

:33:53.:33:58.

and satellite provider and then from Monday July the 3rd, the 2017

:33:59.:34:01.

Wimbledon Championships get underway in all their glory and we will have

:34:02.:34:06.

full coverage on all the BBC formats. A lot of tennis coming up,

:34:07.:34:11.

what they four weeks we have and let's hope the sun shined all the

:34:12.:34:16.

way through! The players will be loving it, I hope the fans brought

:34:17.:34:23.

their fans with them! And plenty of water as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga said,

:34:24.:34:26.

maybe not what they are serving in the hospitality tent! You know this

:34:27.:34:33.

young man very well, how is his game going to match up against Dimitrov?

:34:34.:34:39.

He has a lot in his game, Ryan Harrison, a big serve and a big

:34:40.:34:43.

forehand and he moves well. He is defending better than he used to, at

:34:44.:34:48.

one stage he was a bit one paced but he has changed his game a lot and

:34:49.:34:56.

tidied up his volleying. He has worked on that a lot and he won the

:34:57.:35:03.

French Open only last week in the men's doubles. The pressure is off

:35:04.:35:10.

on him now. He took a bit too much about being the next big hope of

:35:11.:35:13.

American tennis and they put a lot of pressure on you when you get that

:35:14.:35:17.

sort of reputation and if you don't live up to it they give you a lot of

:35:18.:35:22.

stick in the press. He has become his own man now, he is married, and

:35:23.:35:25.

he just wants to be the best he can and I think there is a good future

:35:26.:35:29.

and he can move up the rankings a lot. He is very talented. I don't

:35:30.:35:35.

know what he has done with his short! He obviously doesn't own an

:35:36.:35:41.

iron! But he is quite a fiery player as well, how many racket did he

:35:42.:35:48.

break at Indian Wells? Four and he did the same thing a few times at

:35:49.:35:55.

Team Tennis! I am hoping he did not hit me with one! He gets very fired

:35:56.:36:00.

up but he is a good fellow and he's confident, almost cocky but not in a

:36:01.:36:05.

bad way. He is very short in himself and you have to be that if you're

:36:06.:36:10.

going to be in the world's top 50. He has that in him and this is not

:36:11.:36:16.

an easy match for Dimitrov. Looking at the draw, what we have seen and

:36:17.:36:20.

how strong it is and how difficult it is to break through in the men's

:36:21.:36:25.

game now. It is absolutely brutal. Even watching the challengers, let

:36:26.:36:31.

alone the lower ranked tournaments, you can see the standard. You talked

:36:32.:36:35.

about Wimbledon qualifying, go and watch that and you can see the

:36:36.:36:40.

players there fighting to get into the draw, the standard is

:36:41.:36:44.

unbelievable in the men's game now. You will have to make your way, a

:36:45.:36:49.

quick dash for John to the commentary box where Andrew is

:36:50.:36:52.

already there and we're looking forward to this, it should be a bit

:36:53.:36:54.

closer than the last. All yours. Thank you, Sue, bright sunshine for

:36:55.:37:04.

the first round and then the trough serving. -- Dimitrov serving.

:37:05.:39:32.

A dead net cord to start this match for Ryan Harrison but Dimitrov being

:39:33.:39:42.

tested in the first game. He has gained a point to get his nose in

:39:43.:39:43.

front. -- game point. And that is nicely

:39:44.:39:58.

done. With the tournament, John Lloyd, being a 32 draw, there is no

:39:59.:40:05.

easing into it. Slightly longer time between the French Open and

:40:06.:40:09.

Wimbledon but the players know exactly where they stand when they

:40:10.:40:13.

look at draw like this, no chance of coming in and coasting. No. That

:40:14.:40:19.

extra week practising on the grass has been so good. Well over six foot

:40:20.:40:29.

tall, Grigor Dimitrov, just a really well conditioned athlete, superb

:40:30.:40:34.

flexibility. Ryan Harrison, slightly stockier athlete himself. He has got

:40:35.:40:41.

with the most natural service actions imaginable, sort of pigeon

:40:42.:40:45.

toed and loose wrist and rolled around the place but a very gifted

:40:46.:40:50.

player and I am so glad he is finally achieving his potential.

:40:51.:41:03.

He looks in good shape as well. He has a younger brother, Christian

:41:04.:41:14.

Harrison, every bit as talented. He has had six surgeries but he is 350

:41:15.:41:16.

in the world. Grigor Dimitrov, a lot of players

:41:17.:41:41.

will say I love going here or there, wherever they have to be but for

:41:42.:41:47.

Dimitrov, because of the chances that Chris Kermode, the then

:41:48.:41:51.

tournament director, gave him, he really does love coming here.

:41:52.:42:05.

I remember Chris commode being given a fair amount of grief for the

:42:06.:42:14.

wildcard he gave to Dimitrov -- Chris Kermode. And when the

:42:15.:42:23.

Bulgarian did win the tournament, he went over and gave Chris his racket

:42:24.:42:27.

at the end. He is back for another tilt at this title and is looking

:42:28.:42:29.

fantastic already, I can tell you. That didn't look so fantastic! Got

:42:30.:42:49.

the timing wrong on that one a bit! It is the noise of the racket as

:42:50.:42:55.

much as anything else. I enjoy watching Ryan Harrison but when

:42:56.:42:59.

Grigor is in full flow there is hardly a better site in the game. I

:43:00.:43:06.

agree. And the women in my house enjoy watching him play, and Nick

:43:07.:43:11.

Kyrgios another later on. Certainly some exciting tennis to be played on

:43:12.:43:14.

the first day of these championships.

:43:15.:43:37.

You look at the way he plays, just in this short period, when he is in

:43:38.:43:45.

full flow, you just think, why hasn't he won a Grand Slam? Does he

:43:46.:43:52.

believe in himself enough? I think that is the big key. He hit 60

:43:53.:44:00.

winners past Nadal in that five-hour semifinal in Australia to start the

:44:01.:44:04.

year and still lost it, one of the great matches.

:44:05.:44:13.

It was rather overshadowed by the final between Federer and Nadal but

:44:14.:44:20.

the semifinal between it Dimitrov and Nadal was one of the most

:44:21.:44:24.

captivating matches I have ever seen. Unusual to get two matches in

:44:25.:44:28.

one tournament that you could say were probably in the top ten matches

:44:29.:44:33.

of all time, back-to-back matches, incredible. That is not nice when

:44:34.:44:42.

you serve and you don't have any time to get ready for the next shot.

:44:43.:44:45.

That was a big forehand from Harrison. 100 mph return. Is that

:44:46.:44:57.

what it was? Hawk-Eye coming up with all this stuff.

:44:58.:45:12.

Practising next door to this bloke, he was playing with Jamie Baker at

:45:13.:45:19.

Wimbledon, a beautiful day and we were trying to put the ball back to

:45:20.:45:22.

each other. It's frightening, isn't it! It is intimidating, it is the

:45:23.:45:30.

noise of the racket. If somebody was coming up, you would think, that

:45:31.:45:35.

court, OK, the other court is slow motion! I play there as well and you

:45:36.:45:43.

watch them and you just go, really?! They hit it that hard?! And the

:45:44.:45:48.

answer is yes and they do not miss. It is unbelievable tennis these

:45:49.:45:53.

days. I young man you will enjoy watching later, Shapovalov, who will

:45:54.:45:57.

be playing Kyle Edmund fourth match on. He was watching Dominic Thiem

:45:58.:46:04.

against Rafael Nadal and he defeated, is this tennis?! It is

:46:05.:46:09.

almost like table tennis! -- he tweeted. Exactly. Not much wind

:46:10.:46:16.

today, plenty of heat for the spectators, it is a beautiful day

:46:17.:46:21.

and the big East stand, as the sun goes down in the West behind the

:46:22.:46:26.

clubhouse, they really are going to feel the heat in that stand. But

:46:27.:46:32.

9500 people, totally different. Fantastic stadium. And this whole

:46:33.:46:39.

arena is not very big. You look at it when it is lying fallow. It has

:46:40.:46:46.

always been a very picturesque court but the people who built this

:46:47.:46:50.

beautiful club originally, if they could come back and see this now

:46:51.:46:55.

they would be amazed. They would also go, what's that? It's an

:46:56.:47:00.

aeroplane! Heathrow is just down the M4.

:47:01.:47:06.

There is Chris Kermode, ATP boss and former tournament director here.

:47:07.:47:14.

Doing another big deal! That is so good. A bit lucky,

:47:15.:48:05.

really, a good lunch from Dimitrov -- lunge. There was not much Ryan

:48:06.:48:12.

Harrison could do about that, he'd just had to bump it up and what

:48:13.:48:16.

happens next is the big forehand crosscourt.

:48:17.:48:28.

How well they see moving? It is so good. Is it my imagination or does

:48:29.:48:38.

he look the player to beat? It is day one. He is gliding, I love the

:48:39.:48:44.

way he snuck into the net, Harrison going to hit a ground stroke and he

:48:45.:48:48.

was onto the net and hit that up in Vietnam's sleek and an easy volley

:48:49.:48:52.

to put away. Trouble here already for Harrison. -- hit that up in the

:48:53.:49:04.

air. He did not play a bad game, either, Harrison, and he lost his

:49:05.:49:11.

serve to 15. He looks hungry for success, carrying himself with the

:49:12.:49:13.

air of a man who deserves it as well. A clenched fist to Dani

:49:14.:49:19.

Vallverdu, fought so long coach to Andy Murray and still great friends

:49:20.:49:24.

-- for so long. He went over to Tomas Berdych's camp which caused

:49:25.:49:29.

some consternation but has been with Grigor Dimitrov now for about a year

:49:30.:49:30.

or so. There is Dani Vallverdu. Alongside

:49:31.:50:04.

Andy Murray for so many years including at the Academy in Spain.

:50:05.:50:11.

He was number three college player in the United States at one point.

:50:12.:50:19.

Mr Dimitrov is challenging the call on the right baseline, the ball was

:50:20.:50:23.

called in. Open racket face, crosscourt

:50:24.:51:22.

half-volley drop attempt! Of a sliding ball! This time Ryan

:51:23.:51:26.

Harrison saw him coming in so he had enough time to get that chip and

:51:27.:51:30.

nice and low and that is a tough shots to make from that area of the

:51:31.:51:31.

court. Dimitrov backs up the break of serve

:51:32.:52:54.

with a hold, 4-1. Things are going well for the last man other than

:52:55.:52:58.

Andy Murray to win here, that was back in 2014 when he beat Feliciano

:52:59.:53:11.

Lopez 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. They have a great history of matches here,

:53:12.:53:17.

Raonic had the final on his racket last year. I can't remember the

:53:18.:53:23.

details in the second set. Dimitrov 4-1 up here. Ryan Harrison certainly

:53:24.:53:30.

not out of it. On the right-hand side there is Lauren Harrison,

:53:31.:53:37.

Ryan's wife. They got married in Austin, Texas where they make their

:53:38.:53:44.

home now. A wonderful day. And a rather beautiful wedding ring which

:53:45.:53:48.

Ryan chose himself and he got it right, according to Lauren! Did he?

:53:49.:53:56.

She is a trained journalist from New Jersey.

:53:57.:54:07.

There you go. Shape, weight, size and cut, it is all there! She was a

:54:08.:54:25.

tennis player at the University of North Carolina as well. On the road

:54:26.:54:30.

now quite a lot of the time. Her sister is on the tour, isn't she?

:54:31.:54:32.

Yes. She is from New Jersey but she has

:54:33.:54:54.

never watched The Sopranos. That is very odd, you have to be worried

:54:55.:54:57.

about someone who hasn't watched The Sopranos!

:54:58.:55:10.

That is impressive. He is not giving Ryan Harrison any time to

:55:11.:55:25.

That was good serve and volley, he had to change something up. Just to

:55:26.:55:40.

change it up, he's not playing badly but he is coming up against someone

:55:41.:55:42.

in Dimitrov that looks so sharp. Whoops. He's OK. The first few days

:55:43.:56:57.

on grass are always a little nerve-racking, especially towards

:56:58.:57:02.

the end of the day when a little dew gets on the court, moisture in the

:57:03.:57:19.

top surface there. Good hold. A bit of tennis history for Ryan Harrison

:57:20.:57:28.

this year, actually. After winning a challenger, he then won in Memphis,

:57:29.:57:31.

the first player ever to win a challenge and then a tour event in

:57:32.:57:36.

successive event, that is a tremendous effort, as well as

:57:37.:57:39.

winning the French Open doubles, as you were saying, John.

:57:40.:58:40.

It has changed a bit over the years, Queen's Club. How old were you when

:58:41.:59:33.

you first came here? This was very much the centre of British tennis,

:59:34.:59:37.

the LTA was in one corner from while, then the other corner. For

:59:38.:59:42.

this tournament, it has always grown, with stands going in, but to

:59:43.:59:45.

fit nine and a half thousand people around this, it is a remarkable

:59:46.:59:50.

construction job, and it takes many, many weeks to put it up. A little

:59:51.:59:59.

quicker to take it all down. Queen's had a position, when you are two

:00:00.:00:02.

weeks before a Grand Slam, which have a Grand Slam it is the perfect

:00:03.:00:05.

position to have a tournament, because the players want practice.

:00:06.:00:10.

But rather than sit on that fact and go about their way, they have

:00:11.:00:15.

improved every year, and they have had to. There are so many great

:00:16.:00:19.

tournament is now in the world that the facilities are so fantastic, the

:00:20.:00:25.

players and spectators now expected, quite rightly so. You look at Indian

:00:26.:00:29.

Wells, it is staggering, the building and the Centre Courts and

:00:30.:00:33.

stadiums that they have there, and Queen's, you have to keep with the

:00:34.:00:36.

times, and that is what they have done, they have done above that, and

:00:37.:00:40.

that is why the players think it is the best tournament on the circuit

:00:41.:00:43.

at this level, it is because they listen to what the players want on

:00:44.:00:46.

the spectators, and every year they do something to add to that

:00:47.:00:50.

pleasure. These days, entertainment pounds, dollars, they are hard to

:00:51.:01:11.

come by, so you have to make this a great occasion the players and

:01:12.:01:13.

spectators. 9500 in this Centre Court, so plenty of room to walk

:01:14.:01:15.

around on the outside courts with everything that that has to offer.

:01:16.:01:22.

Speaking of doubles, Benneteau and Roger-Vasselin have just defeated

:01:23.:01:38.

the Canadian pair of Nestor Abad -- and Raonic. Raonic the runner-up

:01:39.:01:44.

here and at Wimbledon last year Tandy are, he is in the single straw

:01:45.:01:52.

here, too, of course. There you go, it is going to be an excellent

:01:53.:01:54.

afternoon! We shall continue to monitor that

:01:55.:02:09.

gentleman's all over the course of the day. That is right in the sun!

:02:10.:04:18.

Harrison did well there to hang in. He has got a lot of pace coming at

:04:19.:04:30.

him. Not easy, but he did his job and held serve. He needs to somehow

:04:31.:04:35.

find a way to get more of these serves back in play of the Dimitrov

:04:36.:04:42.

serve, but he is doing well, finding the lines on first and second serve,

:04:43.:04:44.

has been awesome so far. That was a missed opportunity, he

:04:45.:05:18.

just sort of cut the legs from under that shot rather than going through

:05:19.:05:19.

it. Impressive in all regards from

:05:20.:06:06.

Grigor Dimitrov, a former champion here and playing like it, tricky

:06:07.:06:11.

first round draw, at least it is supposed to be, but he has won it

:06:12.:06:16.

6-3, I wonder if the American has any answer to this onslaught. This

:06:17.:06:21.

is the first day of many wonderful days of tennis ahead which will

culminate in Wimbledon. If you want to get involved, here is how. Get

:07:00.:07:06.

ahead. Take your Wimbledon winner, men and women? The men is easier,

:07:07.:07:12.

you can shuffle it down to five or six, and I will go for Andy Murray.

:07:13.:07:16.

He has got better as the year has gone on, the French championship,

:07:17.:07:22.

getting to the semifinals the way he has, I think for media is slight

:07:23.:07:29.

favourite. The women? It is going to be exciting, because there are 15

:07:30.:07:35.

women at least that can win it. I honestly have no idea who I'd pick.

:07:36.:07:41.

Not a bad thing. Wait to see who is playing well on grass. Johanna

:07:42.:07:46.

Konta, there are so many women could win Wimbledon this year, it is so

:07:47.:07:51.

wide open. She had a tremendous final yesterday in Nottingham,

:07:52.:07:54.

perhaps should have won it against Donna Vekic, but ended up losing in

:07:55.:07:58.

keeping to a third set, excellent final, Upton seven in the world. I

:07:59.:08:03.

don't think she has got the past the second round of Wimbledon. I don't

:08:04.:08:07.

think she has. She is certainly capable of some interest there. Mrs

:08:08.:08:12.

Harris in the middle, Frazer Wright, representing Ryan for IMG. Everybody

:08:13.:08:19.

getting settled into houses in Wimbledon and around south-west

:08:20.:08:21.

London, which is another reason why people love to play here, because

:08:22.:08:24.

they can settle the whole team into these rented houses nearby both

:08:25.:08:32.

these tournaments. Local residents fetch some pretty high rents.

:08:33.:08:38.

Just deal with that pace. It is almost like he's waiting for the

:08:39.:08:47.

ball, when the ball comes at you at that speed, the racket has got to be

:08:48.:08:51.

back so early and you have to stay so low on the ball. Now, this is a

:08:52.:08:58.

dangerous moment, isn't it? Because the ball is coming out of the centre

:08:59.:09:01.

of Grigor Dimitrov's racket right from the word go, and Harrison has

:09:02.:09:07.

not had a chance to settle. And you can see now he is trying to force

:09:08.:09:11.

the action on that forehand, and got way off balance on the forehand

:09:12.:09:14.

side. He needs to play some good points here.

:09:15.:10:08.

Chances armour bit, Dimitrov, didn't he, coming in on that. I like that

:10:09.:10:19.

message here sending back, that he is going to come in a lot if he gets

:10:20.:10:24.

the chance. In these rallies, he is just looking.

:10:25.:10:31.

You can't miss those. He is trying to throw one right over the top, he

:10:32.:10:40.

has got an excellent arm. Good catch! I'm not too sure he had much

:10:41.:10:47.

left in that arm, he didn't even get halfway up there. He has a wonderful

:10:48.:10:53.

arm, the forehand let him down, he went ahead and pick the racket up.

:10:54.:11:03.

All the Americans, they play baseball when they are growing up,

:11:04.:11:08.

they have a great throwing arm. If you want to learn how to develop the

:11:09.:11:12.

technique on the serve, go and throw. Yes.

:11:13.:11:41.

He can do no wrong, the sky. That looked like Ryan Harrison's point

:11:42.:11:49.

the whole way. Played it perfectly, we thought this was an excellent

:11:50.:11:53.

shot, that is good racket head control to get that one back. You

:11:54.:11:59.

can see where they used to call him baby fed.

:12:00.:12:24.

Trouble is on grass when it is not five sets as well, and you are

:12:25.:12:29.

playing somebody hitting winners all over the place, it can go so quick.

:12:30.:12:32.

You just don't have time to settle. The British summer of tennis well

:12:33.:15:09.

under way, tournaments of already taken place in a lung but -- a

:15:10.:15:19.

number of locations. Ilkley for the men's challenger. Both players

:15:20.:15:30.

having a look at the serve on the line, but no challenge from either.

:15:31.:15:35.

Ilkley is an excellent men's tournament, and Edgbaston Priory

:15:36.:15:40.

:16:38.:16:51.

to bear recently, a minute's silence for those affected by the Finsbury

Park attack in the early hours of this morning, and nearby the

:16:57.:16:57.

Grenfell Tower disaster last week. UMPIRE: Mr Harrison is challenging

:16:58.:17:09.

the call on the right baseline, the ball was called out.

:17:10.:17:20.

UMPIRE: The call stands. Mr Harrison has two challenges remaining.

:17:21.:17:45.

Still in the match. Tremendous schedule on day one, this is the

:17:46.:17:55.

second of four matches that we are going to enjoy from Queen's Club.

:17:56.:18:00.

SUE BARKER: Everyone enjoying the warm weather here, lovely match on

:18:01.:18:04.

Centre Court and so much to look forward to later on in the day,

:18:05.:18:08.

including this man. You never know what to expect when Nick Kyrgios

:18:09.:18:12.

gets on the court. What a year he has had, watching him play in Miami,

:18:13.:18:18.

that magical semifinal against Roger Federer, three tie-break sets it

:18:19.:18:20.

was, Andy rally was playing some super tennis. Such a great talent,

:18:21.:18:26.

so much promise, so much potential. Willie Rennie lies it over the next

:18:27.:18:30.

year so? He is certainly a Grand Slam champion in the making. He is

:18:31.:18:36.

playing Donald Young, one of the very talented Americans. Nick

:18:37.:18:42.

Kyrgios against Donald Young, that won't be far away. That is the third

:18:43.:18:46.

match of the day here at the Aegon Championships. Sue, thank you very

:18:47.:18:57.

much. I expect the bar will get a little bit of a hammering later on

:18:58.:19:05.

from the members. It is already quite full, but the weather is set

:19:06.:19:08.

fair all week, it just takes the pressure of the organisers and

:19:09.:19:10.

everybody, in fact. It is beautiful when it is like this, perhaps a bit

:19:11.:19:12.

too hot for the spectators, for the players, is this fine? Not too many

:19:13.:19:18.

players would like this at Wimbledon with the best of five, but herewith

:19:19.:19:22.

best of three it is OK. 31 Celsius at the moment. No problem for these

:19:23.:19:31.

players? It is not too bad compare to other places in the world.

:19:32.:19:32.

Exactly. 31 Celsius, double it, 62, take away

:19:33.:19:55.

the amount of ten Zenit, that is sick six, and then add... What is

:19:56.:20:02.

that? 88 degrees! Harrison at the moment, he is not

:20:03.:20:17.

reading this serve at all. It is not easy, that's for sure, but...

:20:18.:20:30.

Oh dear. That didn't take too much energy at a Ryan Harrison, he was

:20:31.:20:41.

just walking side to side there for four points. Just playing space

:20:42.:20:45.

invaders along the back line. Was that four aces in a row? Didn't

:20:46.:20:53.

Roddick do that once against Agassi on this very court?

:20:54.:22:16.

He had the "Bear. He had time to move onto it and hit it, didn't he,

:22:17.:22:27.

and then it checked of it, didn't it? He just slightly overran it in

:22:28.:22:36.

the end. Once again, it is a mistake. It is

:22:37.:22:52.

straightforward stuff from Dimitrov, he is just sending it back to the

:22:53.:22:58.

Harrison backhand when he can. Harrison's ground strokes have been

:22:59.:23:02.

too many short mid-court balls which Dimitrov has just got on top of, and

:23:03.:23:08.

there, he overhit it, I don't think he has been able to get a rhythm,

:23:09.:23:11.

that is the story of the match so far.

:23:12.:23:23.

And that is the end, probably of the racket. And tell you what, you can

:23:24.:23:34.

pop a metatarsal out very quickly, don't worry about the frame. If you

:23:35.:23:38.

are going to swipe your foot with that, make sure the aim is right,

:23:39.:23:44.

you could cause some serious damage. So, Dimitrov cruising here, and to

:23:45.:23:47.

you know what he does? He does what Roger Federer does.

:23:48.:23:55.

UMPIRE: Warning, Mr Harrison. It makes it difficult for his

:23:56.:23:59.

opponent when he chips it back off the edge. Against Ryan Harrison I

:24:00.:24:01.

guess it is straightforward, this is the illustration from Hawk-Eye. Just

:24:02.:24:06.

on returning the first and second serve, he is just aiming for the

:24:07.:24:11.

backhand side. He is staying off the forehand which is the strength, his

:24:12.:24:15.

return has been excellent. But for me, it has all come down to the

:24:16.:24:18.

serve of Dimitrov but the depth of ground strokes. Ryan Harrison has

:24:19.:24:23.

been hitting too short, he has never been able to put Dimitrov at all on

:24:24.:24:29.

the defensive side, it has been all one-way traffic so far. Harrison

:24:30.:24:34.

just cannot get into, he wants to battle it out and get into a few

:24:35.:24:40.

rallies, but he is not getting any time. Richard Haig felt the need to

:24:41.:24:53.

give Ryan Harrison a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct a minute

:24:54.:24:59.

ago. That is a bit soft for me. It may be the rules. It is a stupid

:25:00.:25:05.

rule. He is only doing himself harm, his foot. If he wants to do that,

:25:06.:25:10.

what problem is it? Does it affect the spectators? Richard is a great

:25:11.:25:16.

guy, but if you are not going to call it in a Wimbledon semifinal,

:25:17.:25:17.

then don't call it here. Ryan Harrison probably saying

:25:18.:25:28.

Dimitrov ought to be called for unsportsmanlike conduct from playing

:25:29.:25:34.

so well in the first round! He is bringing his A-game straight to the

:25:35.:25:36.

court on day one. I think what you just said, his

:25:37.:25:48.

grass court game, I think that having that extra week now, I think

:25:49.:25:53.

you will see, and as soon as I have said that, he will lose today, but

:25:54.:25:57.

generally thinking there will be less upsets in the early round of

:25:58.:25:59.

grass court tournament like Queen's. I just love that move. He doesn't do

:26:00.:26:16.

it as much as he used to, Dimitrov. You do lose a bit of flexibility.

:26:17.:26:23.

But look at this here. Straight to the physio! A few bones cracking.

:26:24.:27:12.

That is so good. Brilliant, isn't it? Wonderful to watch. Full is

:27:13.:27:26.

trekked drop volley. Rounded off with a little controlling slide. You

:27:27.:27:31.

don't want to be hitting volleys from that deep in the court, but

:27:32.:27:34.

when you have control like that, you can get away with it. Beautifully

:27:35.:27:36.

done. And his finish with Dimitrov, that

:27:37.:27:56.

drop volley, very much like a golfer who knows that he has hit the

:27:57.:27:58.

perfect shot, he just holds the pose! He has got a sense of

:27:59.:28:07.

flamboyance about him, you can't take your eyes off him when he is

:28:08.:28:13.

playing well, it is a stunning thing, and he's playing well today.

:28:14.:28:21.

This was a dangerous draw. On paper it was.

:28:22.:29:21.

That is unbelievable defence, one of the tough things to do moving to a

:29:22.:29:30.

new surface is get your feet sorted out and your movement. Dimitrov is

:29:31.:29:37.

seeing the ball like a balloon but even when he had to make ground to

:29:38.:29:39.

it he is lightning. His head has dropped a little bit,

:29:40.:30:06.

Ryan Harrison, and you can see why. Even his best tennis has been thrown

:30:07.:30:13.

back at him. A quick match, 6-3 and 5-1 in less than an hour.

:30:14.:30:26.

It is an absolute drubbing for Ryan Harrison at the hands of the former

:30:27.:31:07.

champion, Grigor Dimitrov, who is through in straight sets in less

:31:08.:31:10.

than an hour and his game is in perfect working order.

:31:11.:31:15.

The crowd really will feel they have only just settled in. And yet they

:31:16.:31:33.

have witnessed Grigor Dimitrov... That is not far off his A-game also

:31:34.:31:39.

be is the number six seed for this tournament. We remember fondly 2014

:31:40.:31:45.

on this very court after beating Wawrinka in the semifinals and Lopez

:31:46.:31:51.

in those three tie-breaks to win the title. This year, such a great start

:31:52.:31:57.

to the year for Dimitrov, only losing one of his first 17 matches,

:31:58.:32:01.

making that Australian Open semifinal before losing to Nadal in

:32:02.:32:05.

five sets which was almost five hours of brilliance. You know he is

:32:06.:32:09.

capable of going the distance here and perhaps even at Wimbledon. It is

:32:10.:32:14.

early days but in terms of form horse as he looks to have it. A long

:32:15.:32:20.

way to go. There will be better days for Ryan Harrison who had had a

:32:21.:32:23.

spectacular year in self and we enjoyed watching him play when he

:32:24.:32:28.

was allowed to against the Bulgarian. Nick Kyrgios is underway

:32:29.:32:33.

against a former world junior champion, Donald Young and to close

:32:34.:32:36.

out the day, Kyle Edmund against the Wimbledon junior champion of last

:32:37.:32:44.

year, Denis Shapovalov of Canada. A fine schedule but the first two

:32:45.:32:49.

matches have gone past in quite a hurry, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga already a

:32:50.:32:54.

winner today and he will probably play Gilles Muller in the second

:32:55.:32:58.

round. Dimitrov will play the winner of James Ward and the qualifier,

:32:59.:33:05.

Julien Benneteau. Grigor Dimitrov through to the second round and

:33:06.:33:11.

really looking team and up for a long week here. Let's hope so, he is

:33:12.:33:15.

talking with Andrew Cotter. As comfortable as one can be in that

:33:16.:33:21.

heat, how did you enjoy it? Yes, just pleased to see everybody out

:33:22.:33:26.

here on a beautiful Monday. It is always very special for me to come

:33:27.:33:31.

out and play in front of you guys. The crowd has been tremendous

:33:32.:33:34.

through all the years and am always excited to step on the court. I'm

:33:35.:33:39.

very happy to finish the match in that style. Since you won here in 21

:33:40.:33:43.

team you have had some downs but have come back to form this season

:33:44.:33:48.

with victories in Brisbane and Sophia soapie lingered coming into

:33:49.:33:51.

the grass court season? I'm always positive. -- so you must feel

:33:52.:34:00.

positive coming in. I am just trying to give 100% every day on the

:34:01.:34:04.

practice court and also in the matches because you never know how

:34:05.:34:08.

many you will play on grass. Every moment counts, every practice and

:34:09.:34:13.

every match. I am very happy with the performance so far. It looks a

:34:14.:34:18.

bit different since you won here, how do you enjoy the new look Centre

:34:19.:34:23.

Court? A lot of familiar faces but now even more, especially when the

:34:24.:34:28.

stadium looks spectacular. The first time I walked on the ground a few

:34:29.:34:33.

days ago I was very surprised, pleasantly of course. And I'm

:34:34.:34:37.

looking forward to play a few more matches here. And the Bulgarian

:34:38.:34:42.

flags, good start and enjoy the rest of the tournament. Thank you.

:34:43.:34:49.

Looking very comfortable on the grass, so much expected of them at

:34:50.:34:56.

-- Grigor Dimitrov as is the next person on court, Nick Kyrgios who

:34:57.:35:01.

will be facing Donald Young. He makes the game look so easy, Grigor

:35:02.:35:07.

Dimitrov. He sort of glides through the court and he has that amazing

:35:08.:35:12.

power when he gets in position. Ryan Harrison could never get him in a

:35:13.:35:15.

defensive position, he was always being pushed back. If he hit

:35:16.:35:19.

anything short Dimitrov pounced on it and I liked how he was sneaking

:35:20.:35:25.

into the net in rallies and his serve was awesome. You look back at

:35:26.:35:28.

the Australian Open and you think, he is getting there, maybe this is

:35:29.:35:33.

his year because when he plays like that, you think, how do players stay

:35:34.:35:38.

with him? Ryan Harrison tried hard but you got to get your racket on

:35:39.:35:42.

the ball! That did not really happy so much in the fourth game of the

:35:43.:35:47.

second set. He was struggling. He didn't know what to do. This was

:35:48.:35:53.

awesome and he could not read it. You see somebody like Andy Murray

:35:54.:35:59.

who somehow find a way to at least get his racket on it and you realise

:36:00.:36:04.

how good these returners are. But Harrison could not get on the ball,

:36:05.:36:10.

he was just rushed. Superb. It shows what a weapon the serve is on this

:36:11.:36:16.

surface. And Grigor loves it. He gets mad Bull to slide out wide --

:36:17.:36:24.

he gets that ball to slide. He has so many options and it is difficult

:36:25.:36:29.

to pick where he is going to serve with the ball toss exactly the same

:36:30.:36:33.

every time. He has a good rhythm already at the start of the

:36:34.:36:37.

tournament and he will be a major threat here and at Wimbledon if he

:36:38.:36:40.

continues. Looking so comfortable and we talked about his movement on

:36:41.:36:46.

the grass court and how it is different from other surfaces but he

:36:47.:36:51.

has got it, so fast off the clay. The stay is so low to the ground and

:36:52.:36:55.

when he is stretching out wide and he looks in Alan Spavin time,

:36:56.:37:03.

gliding on the court. -- he looks in balance. He get it back in and the

:37:04.:37:10.

big forehand and his feet, small steps the whole time. And now he

:37:11.:37:16.

charges and that is what I loved when he comes into the net like

:37:17.:37:23.

that. That is natural grass court instinct to do that. A lot of

:37:24.:37:27.

players would have waited but he came in. This is what you want when

:37:28.:37:32.

you come to Queen's, the talent he has, it is all down to finding that

:37:33.:37:38.

winning formula that can take him to be a Grand Slam champion. He has

:37:39.:37:42.

everything in his game and it is just why it has not happened before

:37:43.:37:46.

and sometimes it just takes some players longer than others. I still

:37:47.:37:50.

think he will win a Grand Slam, he is too good not to. Maybe this is

:37:51.:37:55.

his year. So stylish and it would be great for the game if he won one all

:37:56.:37:59.

stop he is so charismatic on the court and a great guy and it would

:38:00.:38:03.

do a lot for the sport. Peter Fleming has joined us. You would

:38:04.:38:08.

have to wonder why it has not happened, certainly on grass. He is

:38:09.:38:15.

a gem. He does everything well and he moves so gracefully. You think,

:38:16.:38:22.

OK, if it beliefs, does he not believe it himself in the big

:38:23.:38:25.

moments? Is his game not quite big enough? He seems powerful enough. He

:38:26.:38:34.

has those runs, one at Wimbledon when he got right the way through

:38:35.:38:40.

and at the Australian Open this year to the semifinal but he doesn't seem

:38:41.:38:45.

to be able to sustain it. I guess it is a belief thing. The serial

:38:46.:38:51.

winners just always believe they were going to win. It did not matter

:38:52.:38:57.

almost what the obstacles were also up then you have the next level of

:38:58.:39:05.

guys who can -- whose belief can be shaken once in awhile and I guess

:39:06.:39:09.

Dimitrov is in that category at the moment. He is in the bottom half of

:39:10.:39:14.

the draw and next up on centre is Nick Kyrgios against Donald Young

:39:15.:39:17.

but there is plenty to talk about here at the Aegon Championships and

:39:18.:39:21.

some potential rule changes and everything that is changing in

:39:22.:39:24.

tennis all the time. John Inverdale has been put into the main man of

:39:25.:39:30.

the ATP, Chris Kermode. With Roger win in Australia and Rafa in front

:39:31.:39:34.

it is a funny old world, men's tennis. It is the most exciting time

:39:35.:39:38.

I have ever seen in men's professional tennis in my lifetime.

:39:39.:39:44.

People were talking about the end of Rafa and Roger and there was a

:39:45.:39:48.

gradual decline but who would have thought they would play that epic

:39:49.:39:51.

final at the Australian Open, probably the highest standard of

:39:52.:39:56.

tennis I have seen for a long time. And then Rafa destroying everybody

:39:57.:40:01.

at Roland Garros was extraordinary. Going into Wimbledon it will be the

:40:02.:40:04.

most open Championships probably for the last ten years. And when you

:40:05.:40:09.

consider that wearing Turgott the league final in Paris, Novak and

:40:10.:40:13.

Andy, I think the third of the draw in Paris over 30 -- that Wawrinka

:40:14.:40:20.

got to the final. What message is it sending out of the men's game as a

:40:21.:40:24.

whole question is a question I get asked a lot and nobody seems to have

:40:25.:40:28.

the answer as to why the players are hanging around. The general trend of

:40:29.:40:32.

answers is that the top guys are so professional with their teams,

:40:33.:40:39.

dieticians and trainers and physios, that they can play longer. They are

:40:40.:40:44.

playing smarter, choosing tournaments well and which surfaces

:40:45.:40:49.

to play on carefully. But we have the next generation coming up who

:40:50.:40:52.

are knocking on the door and we will see when they can knock off the old

:40:53.:40:58.

guard. You mention the next generation and one of the most

:40:59.:41:04.

interesting developments is the NextGen series, sets to four,

:41:05.:41:11.

fundamental changes to the rules of the game. Are you concerned about

:41:12.:41:15.

elements of the sport on the wider scale in terms of television

:41:16.:41:19.

interest and public interest? Interestingly, I thought about this

:41:20.:41:23.

about two years ago, we were doing research on general trends of sport

:41:24.:41:28.

and you look at the ageing demographic of all sport attendees

:41:29.:41:33.

come on site and on TV, and we are in the best place we have ever been

:41:34.:41:37.

in men's professional tennis. All the numbers and attendant and

:41:38.:41:42.

eyeballs watching the sport, commercial revenues, they are the

:41:43.:41:46.

best they have been and we have an obligation to look out what the game

:41:47.:41:51.

is in such good health to go, what are the pitfalls and roadblocks in

:41:52.:41:55.

ten years' time? Then we can start experimenting and this is just a way

:41:56.:41:59.

of having a look at these rule changes. Will any of them happen in

:42:00.:42:05.

my lifetime in the job? Or even watching the sport? I don't know,

:42:06.:42:09.

but we certainly won't be rushing into anything. But tennis needs to

:42:10.:42:15.

look ahead, we need to look at the next generation of fans. We talk

:42:16.:42:19.

about the next generation of players but the next generation of fans from

:42:20.:42:25.

all sport has to look at it. My kids are in their 20s, how they consume

:42:26.:42:29.

any entertainment product including sports, watching it on different

:42:30.:42:34.

platforms. We have to be ahead of the game and that is what we are

:42:35.:42:38.

doing with this event. In the round, a great five said Grand Slam match

:42:39.:42:42.

is one of the greatest sporting events, the way it swings, but if

:42:43.:42:45.

that also one of the great weaknesses of tennis? When people

:42:46.:42:50.

could meet the greatest matches of all time they will always be one of

:42:51.:42:55.

those six-hour epic five set castles. When they are like that,

:42:56.:43:00.

glad at Oriol and dynamic, it is phenomenal, but that is maybe one in

:43:01.:43:05.

the year -- gladiatorial. There is a lot of content to go through that is

:43:06.:43:09.

not that. And maybe they can be a way that both forms can be addressed

:43:10.:43:13.

with a short form, a middle form and may be a long form. It sounds quite

:43:14.:43:19.

complicated! But you do have to think about the fans and kids

:43:20.:43:23.

wanting everything so quickly, they don't want to sit for hours

:43:24.:43:27.

watching. I think it is an issue. We have also come to a era where the

:43:28.:43:37.

bat is so physical, especially on clay courts or slow hard courts,

:43:38.:43:41.

that the guys had to take 30 seconds in between points, it seems. The

:43:42.:43:47.

warnings they get for time violations... They are just

:43:48.:43:54.

nonsensical. They get one warning a match but the average time between

:43:55.:43:58.

points is a 32 seconds so how is that when the rule says 25? Either

:43:59.:44:05.

idea to the rule or make it redundant -- stick to the rule. I

:44:06.:44:11.

think that if we could speed the game up it would help. You do need a

:44:12.:44:15.

clock to actually put that into place. Interesting at the first to

:44:16.:44:22.

four with the tie-break at 3-3? That might be a bit radical but as Chris

:44:23.:44:27.

said, they are looking at things. I applaud him for looking ahead. Don't

:44:28.:44:33.

wait. It is like the Davis Cup, we have been talking about the rules

:44:34.:44:38.

for 20 years and the ITF frankly did not pay attention until they almost

:44:39.:44:41.

had no choice because the players were not playing. This is great

:44:42.:44:45.

stuff to hear, that they are looking at it and he is right, attention

:44:46.:44:50.

span is shorter. Will the grandstands be the best of three set

:44:51.:44:55.

in the end? Maybe. Why is that a big problem? There are great 3-set

:44:56.:44:59.

matches as well. There are amazing five set matches as well but they

:45:00.:45:04.

can also be boring. I think a lot of the ideas he talked about were very

:45:05.:45:11.

good, positive thinking about the future and not waiting for things. I

:45:12.:45:16.

think that are some potentially great rule changes and I applaud it.

:45:17.:45:22.

I don't understand why the first to four grates on people. If you think

:45:23.:45:28.

about it, sometimes the dog days of a set are just waiting for them to

:45:29.:45:32.

get to 3-3 and then the good stuff happens. If you played first to four

:45:33.:45:38.

then the good stuff is from the start. That might make matches more

:45:39.:45:45.

consistently exciting. It will take away what we have been talking about

:45:46.:45:50.

with Marie, Djokovic, Federer and Nadal about the physicality because

:45:51.:45:53.

it will not be an issue so much -- Murray. Yes and no, if you have

:45:54.:46:01.

those four going at it with the power they have fought three sets it

:46:02.:46:08.

can still be a great match. With first of four, that might go away so

:46:09.:46:12.

that might be a bit too radical but if that is what it takes then that

:46:13.:46:16.

is what it takes but I think the shortening of matches at some stage

:46:17.:46:20.

will happen. No let, that has been talked about for a long time. Why

:46:21.:46:25.

should it not happen on serve if it happens in a rally? Anyway, that is

:46:26.:46:30.

a big talking point and if you want to get involved, please get into on

:46:31.:46:35.

social media. We are here at the Queen's Club on the opening day of

:46:36.:46:39.

the Aegon Championships and this young man, 22 years of age, Nick

:46:40.:46:43.

Kyrgios is on court at the moment, another with such potential and a

:46:44.:46:46.

bright future and a possible Grand Slam winner and I'm sure he would

:46:47.:46:51.

embrace the changes and he certainly embraces this service, he loves

:46:52.:46:54.

playing on grass. He has been talking to Kathryn Whittaker.

:46:55.:46:59.

Looking at the grass at Queen's Club can it get me excited and a lot of

:47:00.:47:04.

people, coming off the clay, it makes everybody refreshed and ready

:47:05.:47:08.

to go also I guess might serve set up everything on the cross but I

:47:09.:47:12.

have played a long time on grass. On Australia we have a couple of grass

:47:13.:47:16.

court tournament when we were young. I learned what to do on the grass

:47:17.:47:20.

and we tried a lot on it. I feel comfortable and have had some good

:47:21.:47:25.

success. I have tried to make the whole year important, have more

:47:26.:47:28.

consistency at each tournament but the grass is a bit more of a focus.

:47:29.:47:32.

Wimbledon is my favourite Grand Slam so I would like to do well there. I

:47:33.:47:38.

feel healthy. During the clay court season I had some injuries but I

:47:39.:47:42.

have been doing a lot of rehab and I feel good. And in terms of renting a

:47:43.:47:46.

slightly easier first-round draw that in the past with Donald Young

:47:47.:47:50.

who you have beaten twice. Happy with that? Yes but he is a tricky

:47:51.:47:56.

player and a lefty and he can play some sneaky tennis on grass so I

:47:57.:48:01.

will not taken lightly. He does not have the best record here at Queen's

:48:02.:48:05.

Club but this is a match that you would expect him to come through

:48:06.:48:10.

comfortably. You would think so. You mentioned earlier about his match

:48:11.:48:15.

against Federer, I watched that and to meet the discipline he had and

:48:16.:48:19.

that, even though he lost it, the standard of tennis was ridiculous.

:48:20.:48:23.

That is these other potential have and if the can sustain it during

:48:24.:48:27.

Queen's and at Wimbledon, he is another like Dimitrov who is a

:48:28.:48:32.

potential Grand Slam winner if he can sustain the brilliant he showed

:48:33.:48:35.

in that type of match and keep his game for another hour or so. He

:48:36.:48:39.

could be awesome. He talked about his injury, hip and shoulder and now

:48:40.:48:46.

he has got his knee bandaged so that is a bit of worry. He has been

:48:47.:48:50.

talking to a sports psychologist and doing some work with Sebastien Gros

:48:51.:48:54.

on, making the right moves. -- Sebastien Grosjean. It is good to

:48:55.:49:01.

see Casillas so much talent and has there been so dynamic server? -- it

:49:02.:49:08.

is good to see because he had so much talent. When he is on, his

:49:09.:49:15.

serve might be the most dominant shot in the game. And his opponent

:49:16.:49:20.

today, Donald Young, does not come in on much, a five match losing

:49:21.:49:25.

streak. He has only won ten matches on grass in his career. He came onto

:49:26.:49:30.

the circuit and everybody predicted great things for him but it did not

:49:31.:49:34.

happen. He was an American big hope a few years back and got these

:49:35.:49:38.

endorsements at a young age that never made the breakthrough that

:49:39.:49:42.

everybody expected. He has not played well in singles for a while.

:49:43.:49:47.

Getting to the final of the French Open doubles, that will do him some

:49:48.:49:51.

good with his confidence but this is tough on this surface against

:49:52.:49:55.

Kyrgios. Donald Young can play sneaky tennis as Kyrgios said that

:49:56.:50:00.

you would have to favourite Kyrgios. There was so much hype about Donald

:50:01.:50:04.

Young, difficult to deal with when you are young and we put a lot of

:50:05.:50:08.

pressure on the young players. He was 15 years old and head and

:50:09.:50:12.

shoulders above everybody else skill wise but he did not grow much and

:50:13.:50:19.

tennis is a big man's game. Does he have enough power to trouble

:50:20.:50:23.

Kyrgios? I'm not sure. We will see. Peter is on his way to join Andrew

:50:24.:50:27.

Cotter. All yours, Andrew. COMMENTATOR: Certain players in

:50:28.:50:35.

tennis and all sport to generate excitement and Kyrgios is one of

:50:36.:50:38.

those but what can Donald Young do today, serving to get as going?

:50:39.:50:56.

APPLAUSE We talk about the pulling power and

:50:57.:51:06.

Federer and Nadal and Djokovic and Andy Murray do it through their

:51:07.:51:10.

sheer brilliance and draw the crowds but Kyrgios has that exciting

:51:11.:51:13.

combination, you don't know what he's going to do with his racket and

:51:14.:51:18.

his temperament. But brilliant to watch.

:51:19.:52:42.

Early pressure on the Donald Young serve.

:52:43.:53:02.

And beautifully worked out, inside out.

:53:03.:54:20.

James Keothavong stepping in from the chair. Unlucky for Kyrgios

:54:21.:54:29.

because of course he was in the rally and had hit quite an effective

:54:30.:54:31.

backhand. Start again. You feel that if Young is to have

:54:32.:54:49.

much of a chance in this match he needs to convert points like that

:54:50.:54:53.

one, serve and volley point that allow him to take the offensive.

:54:54.:55:38.

It was rather wasted by Kyrgios. He had Donald Young court in a few

:55:39.:55:57.

mines there. -- caught in a few minds.

:55:58.:56:08.

APPLAUSE A very protracted opening games come

:56:09.:56:19.

to an end in favour of Donald Young. And he will be the happiest guy in

:56:20.:56:24.

this place right now because that was a shaky opening game. But having

:56:25.:56:33.

won it, I think Young will settle in just a little more. There is a lot

:56:34.:56:40.

of support on the knee of Nick Kyrgios.

:56:41.:56:53.

He is taking the scenic route to his end of the court, Donald Young.

:56:54.:57:05.

Highlighted the serve of Kyrgios before this match. When it is going,

:57:06.:57:13.

really flowing, it is as good as it gets.

:57:14.:57:24.

And it's not just the first serve, his second delivery may be the best

:57:25.:57:27.

in the game. What an opening service came from

:57:28.:58:19.

Nick Kyrgios. It will be difficult for Donald Young to find his way

:58:20.:58:23.

past that. We mentioned Sebastien Grosjean, in the box of Kyrgios.

:58:24.:58:33.

There he is, in the white cap. I thought it was, maybe it's not.

:58:34.:58:42.

Hidden beneath the cap. I'm sure it is.

:58:43.:58:46.

Donald Young's parents are here, his coaches.

:58:47.:59:03.

Yes, that is Grosjean, semifinalist at Wimbledon.

:59:04.:59:22.

Did Young leave this one, or was it too good? I think he could have

:59:23.:59:40.

reached it. There were a lot of very good grass

:59:41.:00:25.

court players back in my day, that played just as Donald Young does

:00:26.:00:31.

now. Had sort of a snaking left-handed serve, that took you out

:00:32.:00:35.

of the court, moved around the court really well. Donald Young, really

:00:36.:00:42.

quick over the court surface. But they serve and volley every ball.

:00:43.:00:47.

And they were really good at it. Donald might be better than a lot of

:00:48.:00:58.

pros today at covering the net and playing volley shots, but perhaps he

:00:59.:01:01.

doesn't do it enough. Let's face it, this is the only surface where a guy

:01:02.:01:06.

can even think about serving and volleying every ball. Otherwise it

:01:07.:01:09.

is lambs to the slaughter, really. The players today return served so

:01:10.:01:17.

well, the court surfaces are much slower, and grass courts must be

:01:18.:01:26.

much truer. He is ambitiously listed as six feet, I think he is a shade

:01:27.:01:31.

below that. He is getting the most out of his physical shortcomings,

:01:32.:01:37.

perhaps. Kyrgios possesses a bit more snap and power. It is a

:01:38.:01:41.

different game. Let's face it, look at some other great players of all

:01:42.:01:45.

time, roared labour, five foot nine. Bjorn Borg, five foot nine.

:01:46.:01:49.

Now if you're not 6-foot two, you are up against it.

:01:50.:02:19.

What a return. He stuck out his racket in hope and it fizzed back.

:02:20.:02:32.

That serve went down at 138, and came back not much slower.

:02:33.:03:22.

A little puff of white. 121 mph wide.

:03:23.:03:42.

After that first game, moving through at a pretty brisk pace. Says

:03:43.:03:50.

he is paying free in his left hip for the first time in months now. He

:03:51.:03:55.

has had injections and he has been troubled by that for a while. And

:03:56.:03:59.

his right shoulder. But he seems to be free of injury and full of

:04:00.:04:01.

confidence. It can be so demoralising when your

:04:02.:04:16.

body hurts. Another hold serve for Donald Young,

:04:17.:06:00.

keeping his nose in front in this first set.

:06:01.:06:04.

Some interesting interviews that Nick Kyrgios has given recently,

:06:05.:06:13.

where he admitted, and I think people knew anyway, that he has

:06:14.:06:17.

probably tanked at eight tournaments in his professional career. He has

:06:18.:06:22.

kind of thrown in the towel a little bit. But he also said that some days

:06:23.:06:26.

he would rather be doing anything else other than playing tennis. A

:06:27.:06:29.

lot of it comes down to being homesick. One of the reasons he

:06:30.:06:32.

loves this time of the year is not just because he's playing on grass,

:06:33.:06:35.

but because when he is in London or the UK, he feels at home. It feels

:06:36.:06:44.

not unlike Australia and he feels pretty comfortable. That is a big

:06:45.:06:50.

factor, if you feel homesick on tour, it will be difficult from the

:06:51.:06:56.

start. No question. And travelling is not easy. It seems glamorous, but

:06:57.:07:04.

often it's not. So often, it can be just about being comfortable in your

:07:05.:07:10.

surroundings, being happy, being contented. That is when players are

:07:11.:07:17.

able to work hard for extended periods consistently. If your

:07:18.:07:23.

personality is a bit up and down, you get emotional and sometimes

:07:24.:07:27.

things get you down, that can be a real challenge. For a professional,

:07:28.:07:35.

tried to play at the level that he is.

:07:36.:07:48.

The one thing Kyrgios has going for him is that he has bags of talent. I

:07:49.:07:55.

don't think he actually needs to practice that much.

:07:56.:09:10.

You didn't even flinch for that serve. Just by him in an instant.

:09:11.:10:24.

Again, fairly comfortable, or made to look fairly comfortable by

:10:25.:10:31.

Kyrgios on his serve. And what a brutal second serve that was, almost

:10:32.:10:34.

impossible for Young to put that back into play. A hard slice,

:10:35.:10:42.

skidding into his left hip. Just not enough time for him to get out of

:10:43.:10:44.

the way of the ball. Young, in a different manner,

:10:45.:10:53.

leading with Kyrgios at the moment. That is Donald Young's mother, a

:10:54.:11:33.

tennis professional herself. Coached by both of his parents,

:11:34.:11:54.

Illona Young and Donald Young senior.

:11:55.:12:13.

Again, a pretty robust service came from Donald Young.

:12:14.:12:28.

We have a match on our hands Centre Court, on opening day. If you're

:12:29.:12:34.

joining us this afternoon, you have missed a couple of matches. First,

:12:35.:12:38.

the fifth seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in impressive form against his

:12:39.:12:48.

fellow Frenchman. Didn't play his best tennis today, but he looked

:12:49.:12:52.

very comfortable on the grass, going through 6-2, 6-2. Starting well at

:12:53.:12:57.

Queen's Club. Former champion Grigor Dimitrov made

:12:58.:13:11.

grass court tennis look very easy in his straight sets win against

:13:12.:13:13.

American Ryan Harrison. The former champion winning in 2014, went on to

:13:14.:13:23.

reach the Wimbledon semifinals. So much potential, certainly looking

:13:24.:13:25.

good on the grass and looking like he will go deep into the tournament,

:13:26.:13:32.

in a very comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win. And we are looking ahead to later on

:13:33.:13:37.

today, when Kyle Edmund will be on court. He plays well on the grass.

:13:38.:13:45.

That matches still to come this afternoon. -- the match against

:13:46.:13:56.

Denis Shapovalov is coming later this afternoon.

:13:57.:15:01.

He is reminiscent of Andy Roddick, the way he plays his service games.

:15:02.:15:33.

Boom, boom, your turn. Donald Young gets his second on the

:15:34.:15:51.

board. Ouch. Oh, dear. A man that has had

:15:52.:16:13.

hip problems for the last few months, and has his knee strapped.

:16:14.:16:20.

We know how awkward these can be. Just the change of direction. It's

:16:21.:16:25.

on very new grass. Ouch, that hurts. I bet he is all

:16:26.:16:45.

right, but any time you have a chronic hip problem, as Kyrgios

:16:46.:16:50.

clearly does, that will have forced it to move in a way that it just

:16:51.:16:54.

doesn't like doing. He is in a lot of pain right now. Just clutching at

:16:55.:17:05.

his left hip. I bet he is all right. I hope he is all right, anyway.

:17:06.:17:12.

It's just frightening, when you have been out for months with an injury

:17:13.:17:24.

and you feel sharp pain. You think, is this going to be another few

:17:25.:17:26.

months, or worse? Again, it is the change of

:17:27.:17:41.

direction. The physio comes on and will administer the treatment. This

:17:42.:17:43.

is how it happened. Quite often, as we were talking

:17:44.:17:53.

about earlier, the damage can be in the inside of the thigh. He has had

:17:54.:17:59.

a problem for a while with his left hip. He does also have that stocking

:18:00.:18:05.

on his right knee. I would say that the hip area has very little range

:18:06.:18:19.

of motion. You watch a guy like Dimitrov, Djokovic, they are very

:18:20.:18:28.

flexible. They can take a tumble like that and just spring back up.

:18:29.:18:34.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Kyrgios is now receiving medical treatment.

:18:35.:18:41.

It is almost the shock that he will get, because he is so concerned

:18:42.:18:51.

about it. It looks like he has pulled something. Also, thinking

:18:52.:18:55.

I've been struggling with this for months, I've just got it right, this

:18:56.:18:59.

will be a shock to his system. It will have heard a lot. More so for

:19:00.:19:05.

Kyrgios than for someone else who is more flexible. -- it will have hurt

:19:06.:19:14.

a lot. I hope he hasn't injured it. As you say, I think it's just a

:19:15.:19:20.

shock. He might be sore tomorrow, but hopefully he can continue today.

:19:21.:19:31.

Shall I go on to the different ligaments? Or If you like.

:19:32.:19:42.

The hip flexes are the most overused muscles for tennis players.

:19:43.:19:53.

Everything a tennis player does is based on moving forward. Tennis

:19:54.:19:59.

players, habitually, are a bit lax in trying to strengthen the opposing

:20:00.:20:07.

muscles, the hamstrings. The joints become out of balance. That is when

:20:08.:20:13.

chronic things can appear. I think that is the case with Kyrgios. You

:20:14.:20:24.

know, his hip flexers are very strong and tight, and I would

:20:25.:20:27.

venture to say that the opposing muscles are quite weak.

:20:28.:20:36.

The work continues, Donald Young is sitting down at the moment.

:20:37.:20:55.

Of course, Kyrgios will not just be thinking of this tournament, but

:20:56.:21:02.

tournaments to come, when he has just been back playing pain-free,

:21:03.:21:07.

and with Wimbledon coming up in a couple of weeks' time. Absolutely.

:21:08.:21:15.

He will be thinking a lot more about Wimbledon than he is the rest of

:21:16.:21:20.

this. It is the elephant in the room for every guy that plays here.

:21:21.:21:49.

Once he has had this treatment, he will try to carry on. But it will be

:21:50.:21:55.

in the back of his mind, when you're moving around the court.

:21:56.:21:58.

The Centre Court voicing their support for Nick Kyrgios. And guys

:21:59.:22:14.

are so used to powering out of their split step, the first step is very

:22:15.:22:16.

strong. Didn't feel like changing direction,

:22:17.:22:41.

though. Wrong footing him. They don't play many weeks on grass,

:22:42.:22:47.

maybe two or three a year. Guys just automatically think they can power

:22:48.:22:52.

out of that first step, and it gets them into trouble sometimes.

:22:53.:23:01.

Donald Young has to remain unaffected by this. You've got to be

:23:02.:23:09.

fairly ruthless. While feeling a little bit of simply for your

:23:10.:23:13.

opponent, you know it is not really your concern and you have to carry

:23:14.:23:17.

on doing your job. Absolutely. In fact, he has to guard against

:23:18.:23:23.

thinking anything about his opponent. He needs to just keep

:23:24.:23:28.

playing the way he has been playing. The more aggressive you are against

:23:29.:23:35.

an ailing opponent, the more you test their quickness, their

:23:36.:23:38.

explosive movement, if you just patty cake the ball back and put it

:23:39.:23:44.

in and say, well, I'll make him run around, you are not testing.

:23:45.:23:50.

Wants to just test things out a little bit more, taking the time

:23:51.:23:53.

that he is allowed. He cuts an unmistakable figure

:23:54.:24:06.

around the tennis court, Kyrgios, with his rounded shoulders. He hits

:24:07.:24:13.

the ball into submission. Interesting game to watch now.

:24:14.:24:51.

Of course, the service all from the left hip. If he is feeling pain,

:24:52.:25:49.

that will not be so enjoyable. Just hoping to get through a couple

:25:50.:26:23.

of games and see if it eases at all. It might have been the most

:26:24.:26:56.

dangerous point of view from Kyrgios' point of view, and he

:26:57.:27:01.

survived it. He still looks far from comfortable, although he does often

:27:02.:27:02.

wear a grimace. APPLAUSE

:27:03.:28:21.

Sweetly struck. That was a good, deep return, dispatched.

:28:22.:28:52.

And suddenly it is Young whose body language is a little bit downbeat.

:28:53.:29:43.

Nicely put away. And after all his troubles in this first set, Nick

:29:44.:29:53.

Kyrgios is close to a breakthrough. The two hander can often be a very

:29:54.:31:20.

effective shot for Kyrgios. He hits it very flat but today he has erred

:31:21.:31:26.

with it, more often than I'm sure he would have liked. Well done, Donald

:31:27.:31:35.

Young. Digging himself out of trouble there, facing down two break

:31:36.:31:44.

points. He knows that, at the very least, he is going to have a

:31:45.:31:50.

tie-break. Kyrgios is soldiering on but he does appear to have a bit of

:31:51.:31:56.

a woe is me countenance to him right now. So often the way. The physio

:31:57.:32:05.

lurking in the background. And Kyrgios talking to no one but

:32:06.:32:13.

himself. Interesting, saying that he was being asked about the fact that

:32:14.:32:16.

guys like Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev are perhaps the

:32:17.:32:22.

more likely of the younger group to crack the top of the game now.

:32:23.:32:27.

Somebody brave after him -- asked him that question. And he said, when

:32:28.:32:33.

an injury free, I have got the talent, they have been to Grand Slam

:32:34.:32:39.

quarterfinal is. And there is no doubt, there never has been, that

:32:40.:32:44.

once he gets a good run injury free and when he is up for it and feeling

:32:45.:32:49.

good, he is as good as anybody in the game. And one of the challenges

:32:50.:32:56.

he has is to understand that injuries are something that he can

:32:57.:33:03.

effect. With how he lives, how the trains. Sometimes plays think, I

:33:04.:33:09.

have just got terrible luck, I'm always injured. But guy like Dominic

:33:10.:33:18.

Thiem works day and night and is very rarely injured.

:33:19.:33:25.

You talk about him as being talented but having mental talent is all part

:33:26.:33:34.

of the package. Exactly right. You have got to have it all.

:33:35.:34:27.

Love the way Kyrgios flattened out that forehand. Often he hits it with

:34:28.:34:42.

a lot of top-spin but that one really sings through the court. --

:34:43.:34:50.

zinged through the court. APPLAUSE

:34:51.:35:52.

Kyrgios holds and holds on. And no doubt they are chattering

:35:53.:36:00.

back. A second double fault from Kyrgios

:36:01.:37:30.

and a gift for Young. What do you think the odds are if

:37:31.:39:04.

Young wins this tie-breaker that the match is over? A possibility.

:39:05.:39:33.

And the body language, the contrast is fascinating. Kyrgios with so much

:39:34.:39:37.

to do here. And Young edging closer to this

:39:38.:40:36.

first set. He has done what he has had to do,

:40:37.:41:25.

remain consistent and ask the questions of Kyrgios and now three

:41:26.:41:27.

set points for Donald Young. He gave Donald Young the opportunity

:41:28.:41:49.

and he took it and Donald Young claims the first set against a

:41:50.:41:55.

rather beaten already looking Nick Kyrgios. Still some way to go but so

:41:56.:42:01.

much happened in the first set and so much classic Kyrgios. Some great

:42:02.:42:08.

stuff but fragility and there was of course no doubt an injury. I think

:42:09.:42:23.

we are done. Nick Kyrgios at is going to offer his hand to Donald

:42:24.:42:28.

Young. Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately due to injury Mr

:42:29.:42:32.

Kyrgios can no longer play. A few groans from the crowd but Nick

:42:33.:42:37.

Kyrgios, Peter Fleming called it, the tie-break loss and I think

:42:38.:42:40.

thinking events down the road at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks.

:42:41.:42:45.

Protecting himself and some will say, could he have dug a little bit

:42:46.:42:50.

deeper, but he knows how he feels. You have to say that for him the

:42:51.:42:54.

right decision. He was clearly in a lot of pain and you get out and you

:42:55.:42:59.

hope that things will loosen up over the next four or five games and

:43:00.:43:03.

clearly they did not. He looked to be in a lot of pain throughout that

:43:04.:43:08.

first set. Probably a wise decision for him to let it go. Donald Young

:43:09.:43:16.

will go through to face one of the two Serbians, Victor Troicki or

:43:17.:43:20.

Janko Tipsarevic. I was going to say, not the way he would want to

:43:21.:43:23.

win but players will take a victory however they've done because

:43:24.:43:28.

everybody has been in that position in that time. Kyrgios, and his many

:43:29.:43:32.

supporters, will hope that he is fine and I am sure he will be to

:43:33.:43:37.

play again and get ready for Wimbledon. But a shame he will not

:43:38.:43:43.

be seen further here at the Aegon Championships. Donald Young, a good

:43:44.:43:47.

win for him, however it came. I think he did the right thing,

:43:48.:43:52.

Kyrgios was in trouble and he kept on asking those questions of him

:43:53.:43:56.

which the Australian was unable to answer. Things moving along very

:43:57.:44:05.

briskly on this opening day, two straight set matches and a

:44:06.:44:09.

retirement after the tie-break win in the first set for Donald Young

:44:10.:44:14.

and the reminder if you have joined us, Nick Kyrgios have had a hip

:44:15.:44:17.

problem for some time and had an awkward fall and had treatment. He

:44:18.:44:22.

continued to struggle and lost the tie-break and eventually conceded

:44:23.:44:27.

the match. Kyrgios is outcome of Donald Young is safely through to

:44:28.:44:31.

the next round and we can hear from him. Many congratulations but not

:44:32.:44:38.

the way you would would have wanted to go through. Definitely not. Nick

:44:39.:44:45.

is a good guy and I like him a lot. It is rough to see him go home like

:44:46.:44:50.

that, especially on services like grass and clay, it is not certain

:44:51.:44:56.

footing, but at the end I'm not happy to get through in that way but

:44:57.:45:00.

I'm happy to be true to the second round. You almost got your Grand

:45:01.:45:06.

Slam first victory in Paris in the doubles, agonisingly close, how much

:45:07.:45:10.

has given you an incentive to go into the grass court season? A lot,

:45:11.:45:13.

it was really exciting if you had told me I would be in the final I

:45:14.:45:17.

would have taken it. The final sucked but to get there was a great

:45:18.:45:22.

experience and I took a tonne of confidence going forward to this

:45:23.:45:25.

grass court season. And in terms of how difficult the game is over

:45:26.:45:29.

transferring from clay to grass, how was today for you in the first

:45:30.:45:35.

competitive test? It was good, I'm a lefty so I get a few more free

:45:36.:45:39.

points, and vice versa with the other guys. I have played it a lot,

:45:40.:45:45.

I kind of know how to get used to it. A good start, well done. Thank

:45:46.:45:52.

you. STUDIO: What a shame, so looking forward to that Matt and the

:45:53.:45:56.

first eight games looked to be competitive but what a shame that

:45:57.:46:00.

Nick Kyrgios had to default -- to that match. We hope that he will be

:46:01.:46:05.

back well in time for Wimbledon. Andrew and John with me, one of the

:46:06.:46:11.

great characters and a big blow to the tournament. It is, he pulled out

:46:12.:46:15.

of the Italian Open and a number of other tournaments so I don't quite

:46:16.:46:18.

know what is going on. You can only guess but to be 22 years of age and

:46:19.:46:25.

have an injury is one thing but if it is the generative then it is a

:46:26.:46:29.

big issue. He will have to think about that. -- degenerative. He has

:46:30.:46:36.

so much talent, but to be consistent, you think of the

:46:37.:46:40.

physical work that the likes of Federer and Nadal and Djokovic and

:46:41.:46:45.

Murray and Wawrinka do, Kyrgios, to join them at the top of the game

:46:46.:46:49.

which is what we have thought he could achieve, you have got to put

:46:50.:46:53.

in consistent, hard physical training. Whether he has done that

:46:54.:46:58.

or not over the last few years as Peter alluded to, whether that is

:46:59.:47:02.

the reason this keeps on recurring, you don't know. But at 22 there is

:47:03.:47:08.

still time to recover. But you have got to get stronger otherwise it

:47:09.:47:11.

will keep on happening. So many tournaments but little time to get

:47:12.:47:15.

an injury right and build it up before you are back on court. You

:47:16.:47:21.

see some body like Federer, how he has managed his career so

:47:22.:47:24.

brilliantly, the amount he has played and where he has played and

:47:25.:47:29.

he is still going strong. This is a big loss for Kyrgios and a great

:47:30.:47:32.

pity to into Wimbledon, they have got to get to the bottom of it and

:47:33.:47:37.

find out why it is recurring. I don't know the situation, but you

:47:38.:47:43.

have got to be strong these days to play on the circuit. And with the

:47:44.:47:45.

amount of tournaments and the physicality of the game Comey can't

:47:46.:47:49.

keep breaking down. You say breaking down but it was a horrendous fall.

:47:50.:47:56.

And we see it so often on the first day on the first few days of the

:47:57.:48:03.

grass court season. It is very nerve-racking, especially when they

:48:04.:48:07.

change direction. The forehand from Donald Young could have gone to the

:48:08.:48:11.

forehand, he had to push up and come back the other way. And if it was

:48:12.:48:16.

not bad enough, from this angle am a he is just stealing to his right a

:48:17.:48:20.

bit and we have seen it so many times. Juan Martin Del Potro has had

:48:21.:48:24.

a couple of these and it looks like a giraffe going down. And this is

:48:25.:48:30.

not like grass at the local club, this is hard and you can take a big

:48:31.:48:35.

fall. It is not very long at any moisture makes it extremely

:48:36.:48:39.

slippery. Just the way that it goes but hopefully he will be OK for

:48:40.:48:42.

Wimbledon because nobody wants to see a young man's career curtailed

:48:43.:48:47.

by things like this. It is early days, they have not had a medical

:48:48.:48:51.

diagnosis but he clearly does not feel he has got another hour and a

:48:52.:48:57.

half of tennis. He was at least able to run a little bit in the

:48:58.:49:01.

tie-break. And you could feel in that tie-break that he had to win

:49:02.:49:05.

it, he knew he could not go three sets so no great surprise he decide

:49:06.:49:12.

if to call it a day. Queen's is a big tournament, no doubt, but when

:49:13.:49:18.

you have Wimbledon or any Grand Slam looming, any type of injury, you

:49:19.:49:23.

don't hang in there. I am not saying by any means this was not a bad

:49:24.:49:28.

injury, but if this was Wimbledon, would he have defaulted in the first

:49:29.:49:34.

round? He might have tried to carry on, I don't know. But you can't take

:49:35.:49:39.

any chances. I was going to say, with Wimbledon coming, that has to

:49:40.:49:42.

be your priority even though you might have felt you could have got

:49:43.:49:45.

back into it. It was obvious he could not move, particularly in the

:49:46.:49:49.

tie-break, there were times when he was trying to pick a winner. I have

:49:50.:49:54.

seen him fully fit moving like that as well, this guy is impossible to

:49:55.:49:59.

predict. I know he has hurt himself. But trying to get inside the mind of

:50:00.:50:04.

Nick Kyrgios is very difficult. One moment he is doing that and the next

:50:05.:50:09.

he is hitting five winners. This was the first point after and you could

:50:10.:50:12.

see that his movement was not right. And when that gets in your head and

:50:13.:50:16.

you are feeling pain, it is very difficult. Donald Young did the

:50:17.:50:20.

right thing by making him move. That is what you have to do, side to side

:50:21.:50:25.

and make him move all over the court. Donald Young is one of the

:50:26.:50:31.

most mobile players and has a brilliant record in third sets and

:50:32.:50:36.

tie-breaks. He has learned how to compete. Obviously extremely aware

:50:37.:50:40.

of Kyrgios being in trouble and pulled out wide on the fifth point

:50:41.:50:47.

but John is right that Kyrgios is the rink on the side of caution. But

:50:48.:50:51.

it would not surprise me if he was fit and ready to go at Wimbledon. --

:50:52.:50:58.

you can never guess what is going on with Nick Kyrgios. No doubt this is

:50:59.:51:05.

a genuine injury. Absolutely and the last thing he did, yes come here and

:51:06.:51:09.

prepared and has been here for almost a week and wanted to have a

:51:10.:51:13.

good tournament. He knows this is his service to do well on. He is

:51:14.:51:18.

another like Dimitrov, you want to see him do well because he is such

:51:19.:51:23.

an exciting player. When he is on, he can beat anybody, no doubt. And

:51:24.:51:28.

you look for players like that in their personality. You never know

:51:29.:51:33.

what he's going to do. And they are fun, you need more players like that

:51:34.:51:41.

on the circuit and I hope he keeps on improving. If he gets a bit

:51:42.:51:44.

stronger mentally and physically he can win Grand Slams. There's always

:51:45.:51:48.

something to talk about with him, drama with Nick. The other day

:51:49.:51:53.

before Quincy was interviewed he had said how McEnroe had said in

:51:54.:51:58.

commentary at the French Open, John said that of all the people that

:51:59.:52:03.

would have me back into a coaching situation, it would be Nick Kyrgios

:52:04.:52:08.

and his response was, he's dreaming! That would have been a dream

:52:09.:52:13.

matchup, forget Agassi and Djokovic! Most people would be so complemented

:52:14.:52:20.

if John said that! He says forget it! And he has gone for Sebastien

:52:21.:52:29.

Grosjean who is so polar opposite. Yes, he never says boo to a dos,

:52:30.:52:34.

charming and everything. But he does put in the work, he gets in the

:52:35.:52:40.

academy is four or five of the juniors and he wears them out, one

:52:41.:52:45.

after another. I think he's putting in the hours and he proved it in

:52:46.:52:49.

Miami with that magnificent match against Roger Federer. The pudding

:52:50.:52:53.

in the work but it is the consistency. Some of us still

:52:54.:53:00.

waiting to grow up. We are 53. It takes a long time for some people to

:53:01.:53:05.

get it and it Nick Kyrgios is now getting it and understanding the

:53:06.:53:08.

work he has to-do to be at the top of the game and achieve his

:53:09.:53:12.

potential, that is fantastic. And his results speak for them self. He

:53:13.:53:20.

has seen the likes of Alexander Zverev and sashes are having great

:53:21.:53:26.

success, Dominic Thiem, Shapovalov -- Sasha Zverev. All of these things

:53:27.:53:35.

serve to remind him that you don't have for ever out there and you have

:53:36.:53:39.

to make the most of it so if it is the case that he is training hard,

:53:40.:53:43.

brilliant. Sports psychologist on board, he's heading in the right

:53:44.:53:50.

direction. Ten minute until Denis Shapovalov. Just a word on Donald

:53:51.:53:57.

Young, we have say that he did all the right things. He is going

:53:58.:54:02.

through and he played a good match. Or a good set. He is somebody who

:54:03.:54:08.

manoeuvres the ball around the court well and when somebody is injured

:54:09.:54:12.

that is perfect because he is not a huge hit but he creates angles and

:54:13.:54:16.

get a lot of balls back and is nasty to play and he did the job.

:54:17.:54:19.

Sometimes you look across the court and with Nick Kyrgios, he can be

:54:20.:54:26.

walking around but then hit three winners. He stuck to his task and

:54:27.:54:32.

got enough balls in and got to the win. He is happy with himself at the

:54:33.:54:36.

moment. Absolutely but it means that the players who were scheduled for

:54:37.:54:39.

the fourth match who thought they might be playing late into the

:54:40.:54:44.

evening, Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov, they will be on court in

:54:45.:54:48.

the next few minutes. But we can bring you up-to-date with results so

:54:49.:54:52.

far on the first day of the Aegon Championships and on Centre Court it

:54:53.:54:55.

was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who made it look easy against fellow Frenchman

:54:56.:54:59.

Adrian Mannarino who had suffered a back injury. We will see quite a few

:55:00.:55:03.

injuries this route, it is difficult for the players to come onto the

:55:04.:55:08.

grass. It was a back injury that effected Mannarino and song that

:55:09.:55:11.

went through for the loss of just four games. And also making it look

:55:12.:55:19.

easy was Grigor Dimitrov who was facing the American, Ryan Harrison,

:55:20.:55:26.

again losing just four games. Former champion and Wimbledon semifinalist

:55:27.:55:31.

and always one to watch. Talented player and safely through to the

:55:32.:55:32.

second round. That was on Centre Court and on

:55:33.:55:44.

Court Number One, Tomas Berdych was in action against Steve Darcis,

:55:45.:55:49.

broken in both sets and Darcis served for the first but Berdych

:55:50.:55:54.

came through in straight sets, 7-56-3. That is the result so far

:55:55.:56:02.

and we now know that Nick Kyrgios is out. We can have a look at the draw

:56:03.:56:10.

because it has opened things up. As far as Kyrgios going out is

:56:11.:56:15.

concerned, that was in the half that Andy Murray was in and we talked at

:56:16.:56:19.

the top of the programme about how dangerous that was and it is still

:56:20.:56:24.

dangerous with some big servers and tall players in there. Suddenly

:56:25.:56:29.

Kyrgios, most of them would be happy to see him exiting. People will be

:56:30.:56:34.

interesting to see if he turned up in the Wimbledon draw after his

:56:35.:56:36.

injury because you don't want your name anywhere near. We expect him to

:56:37.:56:41.

make a quarter or semi at that level sooner rather than later but

:56:42.:56:46.

strength all the way down. I feel a bit sorry for Aljaz Bedene who to

:56:47.:56:50.

play Andy Murray for the second year in a row. That is tomorrow afternoon

:56:51.:56:54.

with the weather set fair, looking forward to it. But strength all the

:56:55.:57:00.

way down, Tsonga who Murray beat in the 2013 Wimbledon semifinal, he has

:57:01.:57:04.

blown Federer off the court on grass before. And he wants to play Marin

:57:05.:57:09.

Cilic or John Isner bastion that he has formally, Isner more perverse

:57:10.:57:11.

the clay -- spillage I still think that the match between

:57:12.:57:25.

Isner and Cilic might go through to the semifinals in that half. I think

:57:26.:57:26.

you are right and that is the Last year's finalist here and at

:57:27.:57:51.

Wimbledon, Raonic. Left-hander on the grass, Wawrinka coming down

:57:52.:58:00.

after the final. Wawrinka had a great run. I see that as a 50-50

:58:01.:58:04.

match, against Lopez. It is interesting that that they have

:58:05.:58:13.

brought in a coach just for the grass, which was very admirable.

:58:14.:58:21.

Not suggesting that he is going to be charging the net, but different

:58:22.:58:28.

coach for grass. He writes himself off on the grass. He is not one of

:58:29.:58:32.

the players that comes out and says, I'm really going to do well at

:58:33.:58:37.

Wimbledon. Some people just don't like the limelight, and he is one of

:58:38.:58:41.

them. He gets on with his job. It's very odd. You can't hide, when you

:58:42.:58:46.

are as good as that. I'm sorry, but the semifinal against Murray was

:58:47.:58:51.

fantastic. There is often a reaction, even though there is more

:58:52.:58:54.

of a break between the French Open and Queen's Club. Stan cannot afford

:58:55.:59:02.

to start slowly. Of all of these services you play on, grass is the

:59:03.:59:06.

one, ask Ryan Harrison, you can't find your way in. If you are blown

:59:07.:59:09.

off the court, you are blown off the court. You have to start with

:59:10.:59:14.

urgency. Stan cannot start slowly against Lopez. He said he likes to

:59:15.:59:21.

be set for his shots, and grass you don't get the time to do that? Yes,

:59:22.:59:24.

these are some of the drills they are going to be using about that

:59:25.:59:28.

movement, see what his thoughts are about certain things. You are right,

:59:29.:59:33.

it is the movement. Stan does not defend well on grass. He seems to be

:59:34.:59:39.

late, doesn't get the ball back into playing of times. But he's got

:59:40.:59:42.

weapons. These days, the grass courts are so good. In the past,

:59:43.:59:46.

they use to bounce so low. There is no reason why he couldn't play

:59:47.:59:51.

better on grass. One thing must be the return, on the backhand and also

:59:52.:59:55.

on the forehand. If you look at what Federer has done to people, he

:59:56.:59:59.

nullifies the big serve straightaway by knocking it back. Just knock it

:00:00.:00:03.

back. You know nobody is going to serve and volley against you

:00:04.:00:06.

nowadays. Knock it back on and then you are at least 50-50, Stan

:00:07.:00:10.

Wawrinka, from the back of the court, in every rally. I think he

:00:11.:00:16.

will be moving forward and being more aggressive than he has been

:00:17.:00:19.

before. The next match, and they will be racing down to the court,

:00:20.:00:24.

they expected to be later, it is Kyle Edmund against Denis

:00:25.:00:31.

Shapovalov. They matter in -- they met in the deciding rubber, this

:00:32.:00:39.

incident, in a fit of temper, bashing the ball out of the court

:00:40.:00:42.

and into the eye socket of the umpire. It was such a shocking

:00:43.:00:48.

moment for this young man, teenager, first Davis Cup. Such a big moment.

:00:49.:00:53.

To end like that, it was absolutely shocking. It was awful, that was a

:00:54.:00:58.

lesson he will learn. That was terrible. The umpire could have lost

:00:59.:01:03.

his eyesight easily. He didn't get the racket the right way. He smacked

:01:04.:01:10.

it straight at him. If it hadn't hit the umpire, it could have done

:01:11.:01:13.

serious damage to a spectator as well. He had surgery, it fractured

:01:14.:01:22.

the eye socket. But he is OK. It is a sign of how well we are designed,

:01:23.:01:26.

that is what they are therefore, the eye socket. He was hugely

:01:27.:01:33.

embarrassed. In a Davis Cup, you know? He kept in touch with the

:01:34.:01:36.

umpire, they get on really well now. It was a lesson learned. Don't do it

:01:37.:01:43.

again, though! We are laughing about it this morning, he will be OK now.

:01:44.:01:46.

Another talented player that was tipped for the top. Let's see what

:01:47.:01:54.

he had to say. Seriously one practising today? It

:01:55.:01:58.

is great to be in London with such great weather, the past couple of

:01:59.:02:03.

weeks it has been really raining. You have come through qualifying,

:02:04.:02:07.

one really tough match in a tie-break decider. You must be

:02:08.:02:11.

feeling in pretty good nick? Yes, saved much point in the first match,

:02:12.:02:16.

and have a battle with Liam. Happy to have qualified and have a chance

:02:17.:02:20.

to play Kyle Edmund again. I expect a good match and I will go out there

:02:21.:02:24.

and have fun. When you say play him again, everybody talks about the

:02:25.:02:27.

previous meeting. Is that behind you now, is it time to move on? Yes, you

:02:28.:02:34.

know, what happened happened. Like you said, it is behind me. I have

:02:35.:02:38.

learned from it, it is a new match, nothing to do with the last one. I

:02:39.:02:42.

think it will be a fun battle. Best of luck.

:02:43.:02:45.

Very good to do an interview and get a feel for it. We talk about the

:02:46.:02:52.

weather, it is perfect for the players of grass courts, they are

:02:53.:02:56.

used to this weather and play in it all year round. Doesn't reflect the

:02:57.:03:00.

heat, so that is nice. Some of the places they have been at over the

:03:01.:03:05.

years, Malaysia, the middle of the day, with the humidity. I'm more

:03:06.:03:11.

worried about the spectators. Not necessarily those two, but some of

:03:12.:03:14.

them in the East stand, as the sun goes down behind me, the clubhouse

:03:15.:03:18.

are going to get it right in the face. I assumed they knew that when

:03:19.:03:22.

they bought their tickets. A day for umbrellas for the right reasons. A

:03:23.:03:28.

beautiful day for tennis. And in the member area, you have to get in

:03:29.:03:32.

early, because there are no tickets. They get early and they have to make

:03:33.:03:40.

it through to early evening. There is a bar, less than a pitching wedge

:03:41.:03:41.

away. Let's hear from Kyle. You have had ten days since leaving

:03:42.:03:51.

France. How much work can be done on the grass? Pretty much... Well, I

:03:52.:03:57.

took a couple of days off after the French Open and went home for a bit,

:03:58.:04:02.

which was nice. I got going on Friday of last week. I have been on

:04:03.:04:07.

it nine or ten days, which is nice. You know, we have that extra week in

:04:08.:04:13.

the calendar now, and it makes a huge difference. All of the practice

:04:14.:04:16.

you have done has been in glorious weather, so it's been great? Yes,

:04:17.:04:20.

it's been really hot, hot than anybody expected for England. I

:04:21.:04:27.

think it helps the grass in terms of movement, it doesn't have that, when

:04:28.:04:33.

it is so fresh, during the mornings it can be slippy. I think it helps

:04:34.:04:37.

the movement and the ball speed will be quicker than previous years. One

:04:38.:04:41.

quick question about your opponent, people will make a big deal about

:04:42.:04:45.

what happened when you met in the Davis Cup tie. You worthy innocent

:04:46.:04:49.

bystander, if you like. What was your abiding memory, just winning

:04:50.:04:53.

it? Just the incident, the way it unfolded. Not many matches end in

:04:54.:05:01.

that way. It is very much like a worn in a million incident -- one in

:05:02.:05:08.

a million. I think people have moved on. He will have learned from it and

:05:09.:05:16.

there was no malicious intent, it was just the wrong decision at that

:05:17.:05:24.

time. I've moved on, he has moved on. Just get on with it. Because we

:05:25.:05:28.

are so young, I am sure we will play a few more times in the future. I am

:05:29.:05:32.

sure you will. Best of luck today. It's going to be an interesting

:05:33.:05:36.

match between two very talented players. Kyle's game has improved so

:05:37.:05:42.

much, in so many departments. But Denis has a big shot, big service?

:05:43.:05:48.

He is dangerous, and we always say in tennis to beware of a qualifier.

:05:49.:05:52.

The matches he has won, tough matches, he is ready to go. He's got

:05:53.:05:57.

dangerous weapons. On a day like today, it is fast. If he gets the

:05:58.:06:00.

server cranking, it will be interesting. A lot of power out

:06:01.:06:04.

there. Kyle Edmund, one of the biggest forehands in the game,

:06:05.:06:08.

without question. He has improved his backhand and movement and that

:06:09.:06:12.

has to keep improving, if he is to make the next step. He has made some

:06:13.:06:18.

big steps in the last couple of years. Who knows where he can go?

:06:19.:06:23.

The players will be out in a moment. I don't think people quite

:06:24.:06:24.

understand the difference between playing matches and just practising.

:06:25.:06:30.

It is that match mentality that I such a difference, which is why

:06:31.:06:36.

qualifiers are so dangerous? We are talking about Shapovalov...

:06:37.:06:43.

Shapovalov? Tyre by the time we start, dating, that will be fine.

:06:44.:06:49.

The first round of qualifying as a dirty match. You get the job done

:06:50.:06:56.

anyway you can. He's just turned 18. All of these matches go in the tank

:06:57.:06:59.

and you call upon them. We will not see the best of Denis until he is

:07:00.:07:07.

22, 23. This is a chance to see the junior Wimbledon champion from last

:07:08.:07:12.

year developing. In front of this crowd, this is a big moment for him.

:07:13.:07:16.

He's 18. He hasn't done anything yet. He struggled a little bit being

:07:17.:07:22.

away from home. As any 17, 18, 19-year-old will do. It is all part

:07:23.:07:26.

of the adjustment. Putting these matches in the tank, in the

:07:27.:07:30.

sunshine, a wonderful tournament, against a home favourite. It is a

:07:31.:07:33.

tough match for Kyle Edmund, absolutely right. He has already

:07:34.:07:45.

played his way in. The weather was good over the weekend. Certainly a

:07:46.:07:47.

dangerous one. Kyle's grass court game is not quite his clay-court

:07:48.:07:50.

game or hard court game yet. It may yet be. He is desperate to win

:07:51.:07:56.

matches at Wimbledon. It was interesting when you are talking

:07:57.:08:01.

about teenagers, if we will see another immense teenage talent like

:08:02.:08:04.

we did with Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Rafa Nadal. The game has

:08:05.:08:11.

changed, hasn't it? It is difficult for kids to have the physicality as

:08:12.:08:15.

well as the match experience to be right at the top of the game.

:08:16.:08:19.

Absolutely, you could get some flash in the pan good results, here and

:08:20.:08:23.

there. Nowadays, to jump from a 17-year-old into winning slams, it

:08:24.:08:31.

is tough. The men's game in particular, there are such amazing

:08:32.:08:34.

physical specimens out there. Earlier than they would have

:08:35.:08:37.

expected, that is why we had the delay after the last match. Nobody

:08:38.:08:41.

expecting Kyrgios to default after the first step. He was having a good

:08:42.:08:51.

match, looking at the TV. Then they said, are you ready to play? He is a

:08:52.:08:56.

very laid-back bloke, Kyle Edmund. It is helpful to be out on the tour,

:08:57.:09:00.

we were talking about the adjustment that Shapovalov has. Shapovalov!

:09:01.:09:13.

That he had to make. It is about knowing how to get the best out of

:09:14.:09:16.

yourself. You can only find the way to get the best out of yourself over

:09:17.:09:21.

time, through trial and error. Massive match for this young man. We

:09:22.:09:25.

will talk more about the players in a moment. We are going to look ahead

:09:26.:09:29.

to tomorrow. A wonderful order of play today. A shame the matches were

:09:30.:09:33.

a little bit one-sided. Stars galore on Centre Court.

:09:34.:09:52.

Some big serves there. Also, we will be keeping an eye on Court Number

:09:53.:09:58.

One. James Ward has been given a wildcard as he tries to make his way

:09:59.:10:01.

back in the game, against Julien Benneteau.

:10:02.:10:12.

We will be on air at one o'clock on BBC Two. Of course, the red button

:10:13.:10:22.

starts at 12 class -- 12 o'clock. Let's talk about Kyle and what he

:10:23.:10:25.

learned from the likes of spending time with Andy Murray. He has really

:10:26.:10:31.

taken him under his wing? He is a great practice partner. Kyle is as

:10:32.:10:35.

well. He hits his forehand as hard as anybody in the game. He had the

:10:36.:10:41.

same forehand at 16, 17, 18 years of age. That was natural power. He

:10:42.:10:45.

continued to develop it. His body has changed completely in the last

:10:46.:10:49.

couple of years. Physically, he is so strong. He has the air of

:10:50.:10:58.

somebody that believes that. That is a nervous umpire! I joke. To have

:10:59.:11:05.

somebody like Andy Murray, all about work ethic, maximising talent, to

:11:06.:11:11.

have him in your country and have him invite you to his place to

:11:12.:11:15.

train, to be around every aspect and detail of what Andy does from

:11:16.:11:21.

training, food, rest, it is invaluable. That is one of the

:11:22.:11:30.

reasons why Andy, Judy, well done on her OBE. This expertise must not be

:11:31.:11:36.

lost. Even if you are only 80 in the world, you have been a pro, don't

:11:37.:11:41.

let former players leave the game in any shape. They bring huge

:11:42.:11:43.

experience within that can be learned from. He is very lucky to

:11:44.:11:49.

have Murray around. And Andy has done so much in the Davis Cup,

:11:50.:11:52.

bringing the younger players in. Spending time with him really helps.

:11:53.:11:59.

If you are a professional player, hang around with the winners. That

:12:00.:12:03.

is the way to do it. If you get a chance to hang around with the

:12:04.:12:09.

winners, that is where you learn everything, the mentality, what they

:12:10.:12:12.

put in to win these matches, the physicality of it all. He is so

:12:13.:12:15.

lucky to be involved with somebody like Andy Murray to pass on that

:12:16.:12:19.

stuff. But then you've got to be prepared to do the work like Andy

:12:20.:12:23.

Murray has, Kyle Edmund does. It's all right saying, he does this, but

:12:24.:12:27.

you go out and do what they do. The work rate they put in is

:12:28.:12:31.

unbelievable, Kyle Edmund apparently gets in there and is as good as all

:12:32.:12:35.

of them. He has improved very quickly in his game. They are by no

:12:36.:12:39.

means the finished product, there is a lot of work he has to do, the

:12:40.:12:42.

volleys, the movement, the defending, even the backhand. But he

:12:43.:12:52.

has weapons. He has a big serve. You have those weapons in your game,

:12:53.:12:55.

there is a lot to build on. What a platform that is. Also, he loves

:12:56.:13:00.

clay courts. He reached the third round of Roland Garros. He took Rafa

:13:01.:13:05.

Nadal the Nick the distance. This is his worst surface, but he

:13:06.:13:17.

didn't play last year well at Queen's. He is starting to learn the

:13:18.:13:24.

service. I expect him to do well. And I expect to have a good

:13:25.:13:28.

Wimbledon. He hasn't had one before, but no reason why not. He just has

:13:29.:13:31.

to improve on grass, and he will do. A lot of it is about the. Even Milos

:13:32.:13:38.

Raonic said it was a big issue for him. Drill after drill. You just

:13:39.:13:45.

have to keep working on it. You have to watch how the top players defend.

:13:46.:13:51.

It is a learning curve, when to come into the net, when not to. He has

:13:52.:13:54.

definitely improved his technique on the volley a long way. For Denis, it

:13:55.:14:06.

was his Davis Cup debut when that unfortunate event happened, but what

:14:07.:14:10.

an incredible Davis Cup debut Kyle Edmund had, going into the final,

:14:11.:14:13.

how well he played against David Goffin. It just shows he is not

:14:14.:14:18.

frightened of a big crowd. That was a big sign for me. He could have

:14:19.:14:22.

easily hid under the covers in that match, going out in the finals,

:14:23.:14:25.

being thrown in writing to a match like that, for the first two sets he

:14:26.:14:28.

was playing like he was number one in the world. He eventually ran out

:14:29.:14:33.

of steam. But if he puts on self out there, he has won two Davis Cup

:14:34.:14:39.

matches on his own. There are a lot of positives about his game. I sense

:14:40.:14:42.

that this fellow in the picture right now will be talked about a lot

:14:43.:14:46.

in the next four or five years. Probably in through a four weeks,

:14:47.:14:50.

because he has a game that is built for grass. That big lefty serve,

:14:51.:14:58.

that will be playing into his weaker wing, the backhand. He is going to

:14:59.:15:03.

try to attack the backhand. Also, the movement, particularly in the

:15:04.:15:08.

left court, it is a double whammy. The court they played on in Canada

:15:09.:15:14.

indoors is very quick. Shapovalov may have enough game to not allow

:15:15.:15:20.

Kyle Edmund to dominate like he did in the rallies. He was manoeuvring

:15:21.:15:28.

around a bit. I have a feeling that Shapovalov will keep the points a

:15:29.:15:35.

lot shorter than in that match. The problem with Shapovalov, he sees the

:15:36.:15:40.

ball and thinks he's going to hit a winner. He doesn't know how to

:15:41.:15:43.

create points, to walk the ball around. He goes for winners, he has

:15:44.:15:48.

such faith in his ability. A certain Boris Becker was like that at one

:15:49.:15:52.

stage. Then out of the blue he harnessed it together and won

:15:53.:15:56.

Wimbledon. In a month and a half, I saw him at the Italian open in a few

:15:57.:15:59.

weeks before that and practised with him. He looked like this player

:16:00.:16:08.

where you would go, OK, I few weeks later he wins Wimbledon. The way

:16:09.:16:13.

Boris won here, the style of play, it is the confidence, isn't it? More

:16:14.:16:19.

than anything else? Very similar. I don't know Shapovalov, but I have a

:16:20.:16:22.

feeling that he has absolute faith in his ability to hit winners

:16:23.:16:26.

whenever he sees the ball. It is great, it could be great, and if he

:16:27.:16:31.

could just sometimes look at it and say, the percentage of winning that

:16:32.:16:35.

point, that shot, that is two out of ten, I will wait for the next ball

:16:36.:16:39.

before I go for the huge winner. At the moment, he doesn't have it. If

:16:40.:16:42.

he learns to harness that power, watch out, he will be very

:16:43.:16:46.

dangerous. It was interesting, listening to Chris talking about the

:16:47.:16:54.

next generation, watching the game, and you think about the next

:16:55.:16:56.

generation of players. There seems to have been a few, including

:16:57.:17:04.

Shapovalov. Kyrgios, we have always been talking about him. There are a

:17:05.:17:09.

lot of good players. I don't think we have so much to worry about. Andy

:17:10.:17:21.

Murray was in the papers the other day, maybe in two or three years,

:17:22.:17:24.

the physicality of this game, we have a good generation coming

:17:25.:17:27.

behind. We have no worries about men's tennis in the next five or six

:17:28.:17:32.

years, even if the top stars decide it is time for them to leave. We

:17:33.:17:36.

have a lot of players coming in that I that I think I going to be big

:17:37.:17:40.

stars. It will be interesting to see this. A real test against the body

:17:41.:17:44.

who really proved himself in qualifying. An exciting match to

:17:45.:17:47.

look forward to. Time for you to head to the commentary box.

:17:48.:17:54.

This is going to be one of those matches were you think you might be

:17:55.:18:00.

watching the development of a future star player. Denis Shapovalov

:18:01.:18:11.

against Kyle Edmund, which is a lot easier to say. One is in the top 50,

:18:12.:18:18.

one is in the top 100 for the first time. Last year's Wimbledon junior

:18:19.:18:23.

champion at the near end, receiving serve from Kyle Edmund, the British

:18:24.:18:24.

number two. Kyle Edmund starts the match with

:18:25.:19:05.

two points of his own, can he make it three?

:19:06.:19:52.

Very tidy start for the British player. Already a Davis Cup winner

:19:53.:19:59.

for Great Britain, when they beat Belgium in the final.

:20:00.:20:06.

We talk about the influence of Andy Murray, practising with him. That is

:20:07.:20:13.

Leon Smith, the Davis Cup captain, who led the team that year. You talk

:20:14.:20:17.

about the influences, it is not just practising with them in the

:20:18.:20:21.

off-season, but to watch him close up, competing that year, was quite

:20:22.:20:25.

something. Andy Murray is in action tomorrow, the top seed, five-time

:20:26.:20:26.

champion of the event. This is undoubtedly an exciting

:20:27.:21:45.

player. The service motion, Lucy -- loose, is look at this delivery.

:21:46.:21:54.

This sort of age, you can play five sets, take and how off and play five

:21:55.:22:09.

more. Decent hold from 0-15. Always nice

:22:10.:22:27.

to get a settler, playing on a big court for the first time.

:22:28.:22:34.

Gorgeous, looking back to this clubhouse. They have had

:22:35.:22:39.

international rugby matches, international football matches and

:22:40.:22:41.

great events aside. I am sure John Inverdale will keep

:22:42.:22:51.

us up to speed with the history of the club throughout the week.

:22:52.:22:59.

I am sure property developers have flown into Heathrow, looked down at

:23:00.:23:06.

this patch of ground and thought, I wouldn't mind some of that.

:23:07.:23:20.

That is the sort of shot I was talking about, with his thought

:23:21.:23:26.

process. Going for a clean winner from four feet behind the baseline.

:23:27.:23:31.

Your percentage chance on that was probably one or two out of ten to

:23:32.:23:36.

make it. He sees a little space and thinks, I'll have some of that, I'll

:23:37.:23:37.

go for a winner. There are not too many players who

:23:38.:23:58.

have this sort of rocket speed through the ball as Kyle Edmund has

:23:59.:24:07.

on that forehand. No take-back, just bang.

:24:08.:24:31.

He made his tour level debut here in 2015.

:24:32.:25:01.

Since 2013, Kyle Edmund has made his way quite quickly into the top 50.

:25:02.:25:08.

Down to 47 now, but hovering around a point in the rankings where if he

:25:09.:25:12.

goes up a little bit more and wins a few matches he could get seeded at

:25:13.:25:15.

the Grand Slam championships, not just get into them. That would make

:25:16.:25:20.

a big difference to him. It certainly would. You always want

:25:21.:25:28.

that. The improvement is there to say in his game. He looks a more

:25:29.:25:32.

polished player. There is no real weakness. Certainly his ground

:25:33.:25:36.

strokes have improved. Just the movement, still, but that will

:25:37.:25:40.

improve. Are you talking defensive movement? Defensive movement. When

:25:41.:25:46.

he is out wide, he doesn't have that sort of flexibility like Murray or

:25:47.:25:50.

Djokovic, where they come out wide and can still punch the ball back,

:25:51.:25:54.

sometimes come over it and get it deep into the court, neutralise and

:25:55.:25:58.

immediately make the point a 50-50 proposition. Kyle Edmund, when he is

:25:59.:26:06.

out wide, you think it is 80-20 for his opponent. Is the racket head

:26:07.:26:11.

control a natural ability? That also comes into it, of course. But I do

:26:12.:26:15.

also believe it is getting their quick enough, where you have enough

:26:16.:26:18.

time to hit the ground strokes. I don't think he does not quite as

:26:19.:26:22.

well. Not as well as the big guys. That can be improved on.

:26:23.:27:08.

Soft hands. Not too many players can hit the ball as clearly and as hard

:27:09.:27:16.

as he does. Very few players have everything.

:27:17.:27:22.

I'm very excited about Shapovalov. I think he's good.

:27:23.:27:48.

He is a box of chocolate is on the tennis court. He does remind me a

:27:49.:27:56.

bit of Boris Becker. In terms of the way he plays. And his mindset the

:27:57.:28:00.

court. I wonder... Definitely has a problem

:28:01.:30:04.

with the equipment. Not quite sure if one of the Knox might have

:30:05.:30:12.

slipped. -- Notts. I'm not sure what he's talking to the umpire about it.

:30:13.:30:17.

He looks over to Martin Laurendeau, his coach and the Canada Davis Cup

:30:18.:30:19.

captain. Kyle Edmund, twice a quarter

:30:20.:31:03.

finalist this year, in Brisbane which is before the Australian Open,

:31:04.:31:09.

early in the year, always curtails a good New Year's Eve! And Delray

:31:10.:31:14.

Beach where he lost to Raonic having lost to Wawrinka in Brisbane. It is

:31:15.:31:19.

taking fine players to beat him. Could finalist at Queen's Club last

:31:20.:31:23.

year but at the French Open he beat Renzo Olivo who were beaten

:31:24.:31:28.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round and that was to reach the

:31:29.:31:32.

third round. He was in good form going into the match with Kevin

:31:33.:31:37.

Anderson and had a two sets to one lead to match his performance with

:31:38.:31:41.

the US Open from the year before and make the fourth round of a Grand

:31:42.:31:45.

Slam so that consistency at the big event is becoming a factor in what

:31:46.:31:51.

he's doing. Yes. Whereas it is all new for this man. Only 18 years of

:31:52.:32:07.

age two weeks ago. Really a juvenile in terms of his experience. And he

:32:08.:32:14.

will not know how to get the best out of his game for a while.

:32:15.:34:06.

APPLAUSE That return just landing a little

:34:07.:34:17.

bit short. It gets the treatment! He throws himself at it, he comes from

:34:18.:34:21.

a very athletic background and you can see it all. His mother, Tessa,

:34:22.:34:28.

was a tennis coach and his father, Victor, was involved in volleyball.

:34:29.:34:34.

Born in Tel Aviv. Started playing when he was five with mum.

:34:35.:35:15.

That is good tennis, very good depth on those ground strokes from Kyle

:35:16.:35:30.

Edmund. A lot of pace as well. Always in command on that baseline,

:35:31.:35:33.

just manoeuvring his opponent around.

:35:34.:35:51.

113 mph second serve with work on it. To an opponent's strength. This

:35:52.:36:41.

is the nice way to change the view and not be predictable. His coach

:36:42.:36:43.

has a lot to deal with. Very nice, really nice change-up and

:36:44.:37:09.

change of pace, that one slipping out wide at 120 mph. It does not

:37:10.:37:14.

feel that fast but it is a lazy power. It is, it does not look like

:37:15.:37:19.

he is putting in a lot of effort but the great servers always have that

:37:20.:37:26.

ability. He won his first Challenger this year in Diamondville which is

:37:27.:37:32.

in Canada. The next week he went to Guadalajara and was runner-up.

:37:33.:37:39.

Including Futures tournaments he has had a winning streak of 17 matches.

:37:40.:37:44.

Martin Laurendeau organising the schedule properly. You have to get

:37:45.:37:46.

matches at this age. That winning streak was ended by

:37:47.:38:14.

Manchester's Liam Brodie. Who he actually beat in the first round of

:38:15.:38:21.

qualifying here, 6-4, six were on -- 6-4, 6-4.

:38:22.:38:27.

That volley was a case of waiting for the ball to come to you instead

:38:28.:38:41.

of going to meet it. Strong second. Not many rallies so

:38:42.:39:12.

far. No. This is very quick tennis, not messing around. If anything goes

:39:13.:39:20.

past about three or four shots it is a surprise.

:39:21.:39:45.

He worked this well, this was a really good backhand and that was

:39:46.:40:03.

the one where he opened up the court. He looks pretty comfortable

:40:04.:40:08.

at the net. That is the coaching, physio,

:40:09.:40:13.

dietician setup, agents. APPLAUSE

:40:14.:40:47.

That volley Ms on the second point of this game has put Kyle Edmund in

:40:48.:40:57.

this position -- miss. Both players aware of where the last serve on

:40:58.:41:00.

this side went which was down the middle for an ace.

:41:01.:41:36.

A slight miss it. -- mis-hit. He thought it was actually in and

:41:37.:41:48.

apologised for the mis-hit. I thought it's drifted wide.

:41:49.:42:13.

APPLAUSE Absolute bread and butter, first

:42:14.:42:20.

serve and amid mid-court ball dispatched by Kyle Edmund to lead

:42:21.:42:27.

4-3. Not too many players travel by themselves any more unless they are

:42:28.:42:31.

between coaches and now with the teams, especially in home countries,

:42:32.:42:36.

it can be quite sizeable. A number of people in the box for Kyle

:42:37.:42:40.

Edmund, Leon Smith on the left-hand side with the dieticians, Frazer

:42:41.:42:46.

Wright, his management, for those of you familiar with the Lamancha club,

:42:47.:42:49.

former director of tennis in Spain there. Ryan Jones with the Black Hat

:42:50.:42:55.

looking away from us, he is the coach and he has done a fabulous job

:42:56.:43:00.

with Kyle Edmund, adding what needs to be added, getting him playing the

:43:01.:43:04.

right tournaments. And looking ahead, you said earlier talking to

:43:05.:43:08.

Sue Barker, that he has made progress quicker than you thought?

:43:09.:43:13.

Yes, I think he has. When I was first aware of him three or four

:43:14.:43:18.

years ago to me he looked as if he had a lot of gaps in his game. But

:43:19.:43:24.

he has certainly improved a lot. He has a good team around him and I'm

:43:25.:43:27.

glad they make a lot of money these days otherwise they would go broke!

:43:28.:43:36.

This time last year he got himself a two bed flat during the tournament,

:43:37.:43:43.

during Wimbledon, they were delivering fridges! Real life goes

:43:44.:43:44.

on! I remember when he bought his first

:43:45.:43:56.

car as well, he was so proud of that. We look at tennis players who

:43:57.:44:00.

go out there and expect them to just switch it on, but real life as well

:44:01.:44:07.

as the life of a professional tennis player. Kyle Edmund settled into the

:44:08.:44:12.

top 50 and looks comfortable. 4-3 to him, new balls. 132 there. That is a

:44:13.:44:22.

big serve and he still looks to me like he has plenty more power, that

:44:23.:44:25.

is the scary part. Absolutely. He has got the John Isner bounce

:44:26.:44:48.

beforehand, just between the legs. He has got a lot better serve than

:44:49.:45:24.

his coach ever had! There is an example, just a sort of

:45:25.:45:55.

sloppy point, 30-15 up, a good return from Kyle Edmund but totally

:45:56.:46:02.

off-balance from Shapovalov, didn't get his feet right and went for an

:46:03.:46:05.

unnecessary shot and has now put himself in some trouble.

:46:06.:47:20.

He is using that wide serve, the server that left-handers often don't

:47:21.:47:28.

use enough, out to the forehand of the right-hander. It almost looks

:47:29.:47:34.

like that is his favourite serve on that forehand side, he has used it a

:47:35.:47:40.

lot. Well held. And very nicely done. A very close relationship he

:47:41.:47:50.

has with Martin Laurendeau, I think they are both in good hands here. He

:47:51.:47:57.

was a very considered player, got to about 90 in the world, fourth round

:47:58.:48:08.

of a US Open, Laurendeau. He has Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil to

:48:09.:48:11.

choose from now for Canada. And now this talented young man.

:48:12.:48:29.

This is a worrying match for Kyle Edmund. He is capable of stringing

:48:30.:48:43.

some big winners together. But it is risky.

:48:44.:50:18.

That was a very important shot from Kyle Edmund, that forehand he looked

:50:19.:50:25.

like he was in a bit of trouble but he hooked it back having been pretty

:50:26.:50:30.

deep and that was a big forehand at 15-30 will stop Shapovalov thought

:50:31.:50:34.

he was in the drivers seat to go up two break points but an excellent

:50:35.:50:35.

recovery. He kept himself in nicely. And now

:50:36.:50:53.

Kyle Edmund facing a break point against this 18-year-old Canadian.

:50:54.:50:59.

Junior Wimbledon champion last year. Always an indicator of talent.

:51:00.:51:14.

Line ball. 107 mph, a big serve, break point down.

:51:15.:51:31.

Shapovalov perhaps could have pushed it back in, he was committed to

:51:32.:51:35.

taking a big swing. Break point saved by Kyle Edmund,

:51:36.:52:01.

showing a little bit of courage out on the court to keep his nose in

:52:02.:52:09.

front. He did well. That was a bit shaky but he came up with some big

:52:10.:52:18.

serves and a big forehand at 15-30. Shapovalov is not an easy guy to

:52:19.:52:24.

play. He is this raw talent. He comes at you and if you don't hit

:52:25.:52:30.

the ball deep, he will go for winners on almost every ball. They

:52:31.:52:36.

can string together a lot of aces, tough to return against. -- he can

:52:37.:52:42.

string together. A hot day here, the players being

:52:43.:53:05.

shielded from the sun. 33 Celsius, 88 degrees Fahrenheit in old money.

:53:06.:53:10.

It will not bother these players. No, and the French Open was toasty

:53:11.:53:14.

as well, it was not like they came from a cold one. They are used to

:53:15.:53:18.

the hot weather. Best of three sets as well. Best of five sets, it might

:53:19.:53:22.

be a different matter. Perfect playing surface. Day one,

:53:23.:53:43.

this is the fourth match, sadly Nick Kyrgios pad to retire. Sue Barker

:53:44.:53:46.

will get you up to speed with all of that later on.

:53:47.:53:51.

Very good. Looking for signs of this match awareness in the expression of

:53:52.:54:04.

the ability which she has and this was beautifully done. -- which he

:54:05.:54:07.

has. Well played, Kyle Edmund, because

:54:08.:55:20.

that was a big serve as well. He managed to stretch out his poor and

:55:21.:55:31.

knock it back deep. -- his paw. It came as a bit of a surprise to Denis

:55:32.:55:36.

. Here is a moment in the first set. And once again Edmund does well bite

:55:37.:55:53.

knocking it back into play. A very heavy forehand from Kyle Edmund,

:55:54.:55:54.

deep. Where does Shapovalov serve? Where

:55:55.:56:08.

does he like to serve on these big points because here is one. Set

:56:09.:56:17.

point. And not surprisingly he goes out wide. Slightly slower, making

:56:18.:56:24.

sure he got it in. Some decent match play. This forehand was not as easy

:56:25.:56:31.

as it looked, it stayed pretty low. Good forehand.

:56:32.:56:42.

Remember, Kyle Edmund has the second serve onto the line in the previous

:56:43.:57:27.

game, break point down. This is some of the most competitive tennis we

:57:28.:57:32.

have seen on day one on Centre Court. 9500 people, the capacity.

:57:33.:57:38.

Increased by 2000 since last year. Quite a spectacle. It is the biggest

:57:39.:57:44.

stadium used in these ATP 500 tournaments.

:57:45.:59:48.

Kyle Edmund is from Yorkshire, and there is a tournament up there.

:59:49.:00:18.

Lovely place. The Ilkley Challenger. Edgbaston Priory is another place, a

:00:19.:00:27.

very relaxed atmosphere but a great facility. Well done to the community

:00:28.:00:31.

up there and the chairman. First-class venue. I have seen Kyle

:00:32.:00:43.

Edmund's dad there. He likes to watch the tennis. They don't get

:00:44.:00:49.

many chances to watch it. His mum gets nervous. He has had a number of

:00:50.:00:58.

coaches over time. Ryan Jones has done an excellent job. He had

:00:59.:01:10.

Richard Clews, John Black. Now you see a fully fledged top 50 player.

:01:11.:01:23.

Given his age, you would think his success will be comparable with Andy

:01:24.:01:27.

Murray. What a serve. Was that a second

:01:28.:02:22.

serve!? That was a second serve. He just rose it up and goes for it. No

:02:23.:02:24.

fear in his game. A lot of pace on that ball. Kyle

:02:25.:03:06.

Edmund will be disappointed with that return. In the service line

:03:07.:03:10.

area, that is going to get punished. He likes that shot, too. Sliced

:03:11.:03:32.

backhand. Didn't try to much, made sure he got a deep with a little bit

:03:33.:03:33.

of side spin. This could be an interesting tie.

:03:34.:04:15.

Shapovalov, you don't know with him, he could string five together in a

:04:16.:04:17.

row or hit it five feet out. No returns in play yet in this

:04:18.:05:48.

tie-breaker. Three errors. Just wide. There is the mini-break.

:05:49.:06:36.

Gorgeous backhands. Pulled wide a couple of times. Didn't think he

:06:37.:06:41.

could get that kind of pace at full stretch, but he did.

:06:42.:07:12.

Down! I don't believe he won that point!

:07:13.:07:20.

He popped up like he had springs in his behind, didn't he? Just played a

:07:21.:07:30.

little table tennis shot, bunted it back. Kyle played him back in.

:07:31.:07:38.

Didn't have to move. Exactly. Too bad for him, but certainly a break

:07:39.:07:40.

for Shapovalov. That is the mixture. A couple of

:07:41.:08:05.

brilliant points, and then the error, a sloppy point.

:08:06.:08:18.

I must find out what he says to him in these situations, or about these

:08:19.:08:25.

situations. You are for - one up, you have got a great break, played

:08:26.:08:30.

well, 4-1. And then use market ten foot wide. Do you want him to keep

:08:31.:08:36.

on going for that? That's the whole thing.

:08:37.:08:54.

Having a little discussion about whether he is going to challenge

:08:55.:09:02.

that. He has elected not to. I would love to know if that was in. It is a

:09:03.:09:07.

challenge. He took his time. It wasn't immediate. That is long.

:09:08.:09:14.

Second serve, after a delay. There is a bird on the court now,

:09:15.:09:28.

looking for an early tea. That is one of the worst serves that

:09:29.:09:53.

Shapovalov has hit. Bad error from Kyle Edmund not to make a return.

:09:54.:10:19.

Sounds like somebody is getting rid of their MPs underneath the main

:10:20.:10:25.

stand. There is going to be a few of them today.

:10:26.:11:19.

That's exciting, when you see a player that can hit shots from that

:11:20.:11:29.

far deep, with the power and accuracy. Awesome forehand. Kyle

:11:30.:11:33.

Edmund could have used a first serve there. Now, three set points, the

:11:34.:11:42.

first two will be the Shapovalov server.

:11:43.:12:05.

It will be interesting to see where he hits this next serve. He has had

:12:06.:12:12.

a lot success going to the Edmund forehand, which is his strength.

:12:13.:12:23.

The let really helped him. It brought it back in. First serve.

:12:24.:12:50.

Oh! Well, that is impressive indeed. Tight first set. There could be a

:12:51.:13:04.

lot of tennis to come. In terms of a mini battle, it was Shapovalov that

:13:05.:13:05.

won that one. First set to him. What a match we have here. So close.

:13:06.:13:18.

What a prospect Shapovalov assuring us. 18 years old, but very much at

:13:19.:13:22.

home on Centre Court. Kyle Edmund, the British and but too, in action

:13:23.:13:26.

at the moment. Tomorrow it is this man, Britainnumber one.

:13:27.:13:55.

He will be third on Centre Court. That will be about four o'clock in

:13:56.:14:03.

the afternoon. He is taking on fellow Brit Aljaz Bedene.

:14:04.:14:28.

That is Centre Court tomorrow. Play starts at 12 o'clock and you can

:14:29.:14:35.

watch on the red button. We will be on BBC Two from one o'clock until

:14:36.:14:38.

six o'clock. Just over 40 minutes to go and a real battle for Kyle Edmund

:14:39.:14:43.

as he takes on this man, who is very much in charge, winning the first

:14:44.:14:45.

set on a tie-break. Denis Shapovalov, it is a name that

:14:46.:14:58.

we are going to have to get used to saying. It really does look like he

:14:59.:15:02.

will be around for awhile. Just 18 years of age, just 18 years of age.

:15:03.:15:09.

Junior Wimbledon champion last year. Another young Canadian player at the

:15:10.:15:12.

moment that has just won a challenge at the age of 16, who is every bit

:15:13.:15:17.

the talents this young man is. They happen to be best friends as well.

:15:18.:15:20.

They are going to be an absolute handful.

:15:21.:15:31.

His name is Felix. Felix and Denis are going to be difficult to play

:15:32.:15:36.

against. When you celebrate a young player,

:15:37.:16:45.

they have done great, these are the moments when you repeat them many

:16:46.:16:52.

times, you know, do not let it down in the first five minutes of the

:16:53.:16:54.

second set. Amazing, the end of a set like that.

:16:55.:18:09.

Dumps his serve to love. That would have gone down in the coach's

:18:10.:18:13.

Brooke, if he has got a book. That was an awful game. Very interesting.

:18:14.:18:21.

Shapovalov has not been holding back, shall we say. Look at how

:18:22.:18:29.

close he is. Nothing down the middle, nothing without function.

:18:30.:18:34.

If they are rallying, they are going to be good and strong, but the

:18:35.:18:40.

winners, he just goes for it. Interesting, more of the winners are

:18:41.:18:45.

going out to Kyle Edmund's forehand, which is the strength. But that is

:18:46.:18:46.

where the room is. His coach will be telling him at the

:18:47.:19:08.

end of the match, whether he wins or loses, loses that point, where did

:19:09.:19:12.

that come from? Forehand error, backhand error, four points in a

:19:13.:19:16.

row. After working so hard to win the first set, looks like he is

:19:17.:19:21.

writing notes. You cannot do that. You might get away with it today,

:19:22.:19:24.

but if you are playing against someone in the top ten and you just

:19:25.:19:29.

give away a break, you can't do that. That's just the learning

:19:30.:19:29.

curve. On the women's two, many of you will

:19:30.:19:53.

have enjoyed Johanna Konta's match. Coaches coming on the court and

:19:54.:19:57.

talking to players. I don't like that.

:19:58.:20:02.

You a Davis Cup captain, and you were able to. You do you're talking

:20:03.:20:10.

there, it helps the players, but you don't like it. You have to do it

:20:11.:20:12.

yourself. Excellent response from the now

:20:13.:21:42.

experienced, seasoned veteran, Kyle Edmund. Well, compared to his

:21:43.:21:44.

opponent, anyway. 22 years of age. I wonder how many college coaches

:21:45.:24:41.

were looking at this young man and thinking, would you like to come and

:24:42.:24:45.

play for a year or two interstates? We can certainly offer you a full

:24:46.:24:50.

scholarship. Elected to go professional, and this is an

:24:51.:24:51.

exciting prospect. So beautiful, that I can't. -- that

:24:52.:25:05.

backhand. He hit it so hard and so wide. The

:25:06.:25:16.

whirling dervish, isn't he? Just that forehand miss from Edmund

:25:17.:25:51.

Burke would have given him 0-30. Certainly, that would have been

:25:52.:25:55.

enough, you would have thought. That Felix fellow, the Canadian one,

:25:56.:26:02.

playing last week, 16 years of age, Canadian, a real prospect as we look

:26:03.:26:09.

at Canadian tennis. Auger Aliassime. 16 years old. Last year he won the

:26:10.:26:14.

US Open juniors to go along with this man's Wimbledon junior title.

:26:15.:26:20.

Now he has broken into the top 250 by becoming the seventh youngest

:26:21.:26:25.

player to win a challenger. The youngest player to break into the

:26:26.:26:31.

top 200 and 50 cents Del Potro. Gasquet was 15, when he broke into

:26:32.:26:36.

the top 250. And they are best friends, these two.

:26:37.:26:43.

It has been fascinating to watch one of the practice sessions with

:26:44.:26:50.

Shapovalov and his coach, to see what drills they do. It's one of

:26:51.:26:54.

those things, to work with somebody with that amount of talent, it must

:26:55.:27:00.

be fantastic. On the other hand, you must feel like pulling your hair

:27:01.:27:04.

out. The simple things, sometimes, simple shot selection, doesn't seem

:27:05.:27:08.

to exist in his game plan at the moment. Do you push him to not make

:27:09.:27:13.

mistakes and sort of curve that? Does it take away from the

:27:14.:27:17.

exuberance of going for winners all the time? There is a balance there.

:27:18.:27:22.

He has an experienced coach with him. It's not easy.

:27:23.:27:38.

As we look at this teenager, I think back to another one we saw in 2005,

:27:39.:27:48.

making his debut. Andy Murray. The difference with Andy Murray, even at

:27:49.:27:50.

that age, you can see that he thought ahead. He had two or three

:27:51.:27:56.

game plans. Even at that age, he knew what to do. The instinct was

:27:57.:28:00.

there. Shapovalov seems to just have an A. If it works, watch out. If it

:28:01.:28:06.

doesn't, I'll see you next week. It was a Davies hot when he Tommy

:28:07.:28:25.

Johannson. In the third set he keeled over from cramp. How exciting

:28:26.:28:29.

that was to see his arrival. He's not getting first serves in in

:28:30.:31:19.

this set so far. The first of these service games to love, having won

:31:20.:31:26.

the first set. Shapovalov. That will do.

:31:27.:31:45.

It is not a service motion that's going to go away for a long time,

:31:46.:31:58.

John. Might have a few minutes where he will find the mark but it's

:31:59.:32:00.

always going to come back. He has had his chances, Kyle Edmund,

:32:01.:33:39.

to extend the lead, he still a break up.

:33:40.:33:46.

Yes, Kyle Edmund with a break of serve and we will be right back with

:33:47.:33:50.

this much. We still have 20 minutes to go before we move to the red

:33:51.:33:54.

button on BBC Two so let's show you what has been happening on the

:33:55.:33:59.

opening day of the Aegon Championships. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

:34:00.:34:08.

was not on court for very long. Mannarino had a back injury, and

:34:09.:34:17.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cruised through. Grigor Dimitrov also only lost for

:34:18.:34:22.

micro-games in his match against the talented Ryan Harrison who defends

:34:23.:34:26.

the ball so well. It was beautiful striking from dimmer

:34:27.:34:31.

-- Grigor Dimitrov, who moves so well. But the big story today, you

:34:32.:34:42.

will be reading about this man tomorrow, Nick Kyrgios. This

:34:43.:34:49.

happened... And he has already had a hip injury in the clay court season.

:34:50.:34:55.

He lost that set and the tie-break and decided he wanted to concentrate

:34:56.:35:01.

on Wimbledon and didn't feel the injury was good enough to carry on

:35:02.:35:06.

three sets. We hope he will be OK for Wimbledon and a couple of weeks.

:35:07.:35:14.

Tomas Berdych went through against Darcis. Tomas Berdych through,

:35:15.:35:22.

although he dropped his serve in both sets. That's what's been

:35:23.:35:27.

happening earlier today. Now back to this one, and still about 20 minutes

:35:28.:35:29.

to go here on BBC Two. COMMENTATOR: We are not likely to

:35:30.:35:52.

get any delays for rain this year, temperatures touching 90 degrees

:35:53.:35:53.

today. 32, 30 three Celsius. He has had his chances to push ahead

:35:54.:36:49.

and get a second break, and suddenly you find yourself under a bit of

:36:50.:36:50.

pressure on your own delivery. Some good serving there from Kyle

:36:51.:38:30.

Edmund, particularly that last serve. Good kick out wide.

:38:31.:39:05.

Where did that come from? Would slice there, really kept low and I

:39:06.:39:21.

thought this was a winner. Not sure how he did that. I'm not sure

:39:22.:39:29.

either. It was an aggressive punch shot below the level of the net. I

:39:30.:39:41.

mean his forehand is the headline shot. He's going to run around the

:39:42.:39:46.

backhand all day long to play beforehand, but the backhand... It

:39:47.:39:50.

looks beautifully produced and very flexible with a slice, you can come

:39:51.:39:54.

over it nicely. Slice and moving behind that. Volleys OK.

:39:55.:40:20.

What a second serve that was! Decent cake. -- decent kick. That's the

:40:21.:40:42.

best game he has played for a while. His coach will be thinking, why

:40:43.:40:45.

didn't you play that sort of service game at the beginning of the second

:40:46.:40:50.

set? Because he was still thinking about the end of the first set.

:40:51.:40:57.

Exactly. This time last year Kyle Edmund was beating Simon. He

:40:58.:41:08.

eventually lost to Andy Murray, took one set of him. He is no newcomer

:41:09.:41:13.

any more. I suppose the highlight of his career was the US Open last

:41:14.:41:20.

year, he beat Richard Gasquet in the first round and played John Isner.

:41:21.:41:28.

Tremendous effort. He looked flat and tired against Novak Djokovic in

:41:29.:41:32.

round four but that is the calibre of player Kyle Edmund has become

:41:33.:41:37.

now. He feels like a top 50 player and he is. I think his match against

:41:38.:41:41.

Andy Murray last year was certainly the best grass court match he's ever

:41:42.:41:47.

played, and although he lost there was some brilliant ground strokes

:41:48.:41:52.

coming from both players. But he's not at that level today at the

:41:53.:41:59.

moment. The first round of the tournament, adjusting after the clay

:42:00.:42:03.

court season, not easy. Still got a lot of work to do to get through

:42:04.:42:04.

this one. It's good serving in that game, very

:42:05.:43:37.

good serving. Just that one service game, one

:43:38.:45:14.

little piece of lost concentration in the very first game of this set.

:45:15.:45:22.

From Shapovalov, who lost his opening service game to love having

:45:23.:45:28.

won the opening tie-break. Small margins.

:45:29.:45:55.

That hold means Kyle Edmund will have to serve for the second set.

:45:56.:46:04.

And we will be back for that because Kyle Edmund showing what a great

:46:05.:46:08.

match player he is, dropping the first set and then breaking

:46:09.:46:12.

straightaway which has given him a cushion in the second set. Looking

:46:13.:46:17.

ahead to tomorrow, and we will see this man. This was Andy Murray

:46:18.:46:22.

earlier today in training with his training partner there, Matt little.

:46:23.:46:29.

This is what athletes do, working on getting on the mark quickly for the

:46:30.:46:35.

return of serve. How the warm up sessions have trained, you practice

:46:36.:46:38.

so different from what it was years ago, but that was Andy Murray

:46:39.:46:41.

earlier today and tomorrow he will be on the Centre Court to play Aljaz

:46:42.:46:55.

Bedene. Just about ten minutes of our time

:46:56.:47:16.

on BBC Two before we move our coverage to the red button. So here

:47:17.:47:19.

is Kyle Edmund serving for the second set.

:47:20.:47:25.

COMMENTATOR: Shapovalov has run to his baseline, Kyle Edmund won't mind

:47:26.:47:29.

that too much. Serving for one set all.

:47:30.:47:46.

A first-class reaction from Kyle Edmund after he saw that forehand

:47:47.:49:14.

flash past him on the first point. No panic. One hour and 30 played in

:49:15.:49:23.

the match. Set point to go three sets. Two set points. And Kyle

:49:24.:49:34.

Edmund levels at one set all in this first round match. It's the first

:49:35.:49:40.

match we have seen go the distance on this court today. Jo-Wilfried

:49:41.:49:50.

Tsonga, too good for Adrian Mannarino, who was injured in his

:49:51.:49:56.

match. And Grigor Dimitrov way too good for Ryan Harrison. And we saw

:49:57.:50:00.

Nick Kyrgios unable to continue in his match. Who did he play? Donald

:50:01.:50:12.

Young. Donald, of course. Some of the numbers, John. 33% first serves

:50:13.:50:19.

in is not what you need, down the right-hand side. It is the same in

:50:20.:50:25.

the unforced errors to the winners. Edmund made more unforced errors,

:50:26.:50:33.

double, than Shapovalov, which was a bit of a surprise, but Shapovalov

:50:34.:50:42.

still made the winners. If that -- it was that one bad game he played.

:50:43.:50:48.

I don't think he will be so generous in this third set. Some of you may

:50:49.:50:53.

have heard this name before or heard the story about how at the beginning

:50:54.:50:58.

of February Shapovalov was playing Davis Cup against his opponent

:50:59.:51:01.

today, it was great Britain versus Canada and he smacked the ball when

:51:02.:51:07.

it was two set, he smacked the ball in temper and it hit the umpire and

:51:08.:51:12.

fractured his eye socket. Of course it was instant disqualification. The

:51:13.:51:19.

umpire after an operation was OK, but it was really shocking moment

:51:20.:51:24.

for him and a moment of reflection for him as he came under an enormous

:51:25.:51:34.

amount of criticism. It was a humbling moment, he won't do that

:51:35.:51:40.

again. Is a great kid, it was just one of those mistakes. You might

:51:41.:51:46.

have read about that. It was a big story all around the world for a

:51:47.:51:53.

while. So here we are, he is serving again, Denis Shapovalov, and at this

:51:54.:51:57.

point in the second set having won the first to put in the worst game

:51:58.:52:01.

of the match service will be an interesting reaction as he continues

:52:02.:52:06.

to learn at this level. He's only 18. It is already a start. -- a

:52:07.:52:14.

better start. That's amazing! What a kick on that.

:52:15.:52:48.

That was a John Isner serve. Grigor Dimitrov served a game of aces

:52:49.:52:53.

earlier. Here is for a fourth here. You would go for it on the second,

:52:54.:53:01.

wouldn't you? Down the middle. Exactly!

:53:02.:53:50.

Nicely done. Three aces. Strong start to the second set. That left

:53:51.:54:01.

the serve out wide to them right-hander's forehand, it's got an

:54:02.:54:07.

enormous amount of work on it. And when it hits the line, and digs in

:54:08.:54:13.

on this surface... Imagine receiving this! Doink! There's no way. Because

:54:14.:54:22.

you have to cover the middle with the left hand, because that is the

:54:23.:54:30.

standard serve. He is all fired up once again.

:54:31.:55:23.

SUE BARKER: Sadly we have to leave this match on BBC Two but it

:55:24.:55:31.

continues now on the red button on the BBC sport website, so if you

:55:32.:55:36.

want to continue to watch it, you can by pressing the red button or by

:55:37.:55:42.

logging onto the BBC sport website. Tomorrow we are on at midday on the

:55:43.:55:49.

red button. We come onto BBC Two at one o'clock, and we will see Andy

:55:50.:55:51.

Murray begin his grass court season. # Work it harder

:55:52.:56:24.
