Everybody is saying, "Go, go, go" and he goes, and a try!

:00:31.:00:47.

Welcome to week two of the Rugby League World Cup. Already, it's

:00:48.:00:48.

crunch time for some of the teams. Welcome to week two of the Rugby

:00:49.:00:50.

Wales were at must-win time - nothing less than a victory over the

:00:51.:00:57.

United States today would do. After stunning Tonga, Scotland were

:00:58.:01:03.

looking for a repeat this afternoon as they took on the fancied

:01:04.:01:04.

Italians. Australia have been looking

:01:05.:01:07.

ominously good. They were up against Fiji and the elements last night.

:01:08.:01:14.

England were back with a bang against Ireland. We look at what is

:01:15.:01:28.

working well for McNamara's men. I am delighted to say we have a wealth

:01:29.:01:32.

of international experience in the studio with the citizen's and

:01:33.:01:36.

England star, John Wilkin, the former Great Britain coach, Brian

:01:37.:01:42.

Noble, and the England scrum half Ritchie Myler, who is recovering

:01:43.:01:47.

from ankle surgery. In a moment, the drama of Scotland against Italy, but

:01:48.:01:58.

we start in Wrexham where the maths were already straightforward for the

:01:59.:02:01.

Wales coach. They had to beat the USA Tomahawks to stay in the

:02:02.:02:05.

tournament. A crowd of 45 had cheered the Welch to a half-time

:02:06.:02:13.

lead against the Italians at the Millennium Stadium last weekend. But

:02:14.:02:16.

they ran out of steam, and yes, Sir continue Harris knows -- iestyn

:02:17.:02:22.

knows that a win will only do. They were fired up for a win in

:02:23.:02:31.

their World Cup debut against the Cook Islands.

:02:32.:02:32.

Great spirit and entertainment provided by the locals here.

:02:33.:02:40.

Communities getting behind the big show that is the Rugby League World

:02:41.:02:49.

Cup. Wales have to win today. Onlyone advance is from group D. If

:02:50.:02:56.

Wales lose today, they can't catch America, who have two wins. The

:02:57.:03:01.

Tomahawk side for today, lots of Australian-born players there but

:03:02.:03:11.

many now plying their trade in the United States.

:03:12.:03:15.

Wales with possession, they need to start well.

:03:16.:03:15.

Frizell is inside. Down that left-hand side. Wales have

:03:16.:03:17.

been really impressive. This is the chance. Big contact was

:03:18.:03:29.

inside. He said I am not giving it to you. Roets scored the try for

:03:30.:03:32.

Wales. He was looking at his captain. He said, "No, I've done it

:03:33.:03:41.

myself." He makes the initial run down the sideline. Williams is on

:03:42.:03:46.

his inside. His skipper, Roets scored on his outside to score the

:03:47.:03:48.

option. Great decision from Williams, you have to say.

:03:49.:03:59.

The men in red are out of second gear now, because it was a

:04:00.:04:04.

stuttering performance early. Beautiful start. And away they go.

:04:05.:04:11.

Elliott - that was a - something has gone on.

:04:12.:04:13.

They say one of the Americans that have been held back here, in fact,

:04:14.:04:20.

it Pieterson taken out by Webster. Got him right across the face.

:04:21.:04:28.

Just three minutes away from the line.

:04:29.:04:29.

Someone should remind him it's an era of cameras! Newton goes over for

:04:30.:04:37.

the Tomahawks! I reckon they got off at the White

:04:38.:04:46.

House. It is 4-4,20 minutes top. How many times has Newton done this in

:04:47.:04:50.

his career, two American players running a defender, here he goes,

:04:51.:04:59.

great ball from Paulo. He can't come up with a defensive play. Catch me

:05:00.:05:03.

if you can. Here is Priestly, and here is Paulo. He decides to go shot

:05:04.:05:11.

this time. Almost got away from the tackle of Patrick.

:05:12.:05:15.

Paulo again. Great ball. Pieterson, scores in the corner. A salute for

:05:16.:05:21.

side-show Bob. The Americans have their second try.

:05:22.:05:35.

Peterson with a little bit of space on the outside. He's thrilled to get

:05:36.:05:37.

it over the line there. The Americans have been a bit smart,

:05:38.:05:47.

taken their inside backs in there. They nearly just released, didn't

:05:48.:05:52.

they on that inside ball. And now, last tackle 30 metres away,

:05:53.:05:54.

and Paulo's ball, Evans is going to go for it. No pressure. He has lost

:05:55.:06:01.

it. Kicked up by Howard I think it may have been. Scooped up there.

:06:02.:06:11.

Close to the line, it is a full set to work with. They won't even need

:06:12.:06:17.

one. The man, yes, Colin the man. A shocker. He drops it.

:06:18.:06:26.

All he has to do is catch. Disorganised Welsh line because they

:06:27.:06:31.

are trying to recover from the dropped ball of Evans.

:06:32.:06:41.

The man of the moment, Joseph Paulo. Now the defence of Wales will be put

:06:42.:06:53.

to the test. Samoa is still the dummy half. This

:06:54.:07:00.

is him going as fast as he can. His strength has carried him overt line.

:07:01.:07:13.

He has had very little to do today up in the box. He has now been

:07:14.:07:21.

called into play. It looks sufficient depth there for

:07:22.:07:27.

me. We can run that through to the ground.

:07:28.:07:28.

No drama with the instruction. Granted, this is in slow motion. The

:07:29.:07:36.

ball is on the ground at that point. Ben, we've got a try.

:07:37.:07:40.

Well, maybe Air Force One is getting warmed up.

:07:41.:08:01.

He was really creasing the line. The run picked up and front rower on

:08:02.:08:10.

front rower. Paulo knows that this is just a

:08:11.:08:14.

massive chance. A chance to drive a sword into the

:08:15.:08:16.

heart of Wales here. Paulo gets up pushing the two. What a go, and

:08:17.:08:21.

Priestly charges through. Links up with Newton.

:08:22.:08:23.

Newton scores a double. The son of a golfing champion, born

:08:24.:08:29.

in South Carolina. Cue the fireworks! Priestly is the

:08:30.:08:34.

architect here. James just touches him. It's not a game of touch. Run

:08:35.:08:43.

straight past Jordan James, Priestly, found Newton on the

:08:44.:08:47.

outside. How much it mean to these Tomahawks. Priestly was straight

:08:48.:08:49.

past. The front row there and gives the ball to Newton who would have

:08:50.:08:58.

scored an easier try in his career. Wales, they started poorly, they

:08:59.:09:03.

warmed to the contest. It was only a very limited time.

:09:04.:09:05.

The rest of the game has been frustrating to watch. Here is a run,

:09:06.:09:13.

there is open pasture. They have to finish it off and away they go with

:09:14.:09:19.

Roets. He will score their second try. There is four and a half

:09:20.:09:21.

minutes to go. It's 24-8 but they needed that ten minutes ago.

:09:22.:09:33.

Nice early ball. Does it mean anything in the scheme

:09:34.:09:35.

of things? Probably not. The Wrexham fans are entertaining

:09:36.:09:43.

themselves as Lupton, now he feeds it out. Evans has got it. Gives the

:09:44.:09:52.

winger an early ball. Williams finds his way to the try line. He four

:09:53.:10:04.

metres short. Last tackle for bails. Evans, Lupton, goes into kick, goes

:10:05.:10:07.

low under the post, they will score! The guy immediately to the right in

:10:08.:10:09.

the centre under the post looks as though he is onside, so let's roll

:10:10.:10:18.

it through, please. That's a try. It's going to come up

:10:19.:10:23.

there, yes. Confirmation on the board.

:10:24.:10:36.

Now there's just over one minute remaining, and Wales are back inside

:10:37.:10:48.

their 40, giving their fans just a sniff, and that's all it is, nothing

:10:49.:10:50.

more than that. It is nothing they can touch the comeback. Last tackle

:10:51.:10:58.

for Wales. I dare say, their last play to do anything. The

:10:59.:11:04.

kick-through, they've got the bounce, the centre has passed it.

:11:05.:11:05.

Play on! For the corner. Player is taken down. They came off the legs

:11:06.:11:13.

of peterson, you could have almost said six to go. Wales finish with a

:11:14.:11:21.

flourish but it is not going to be enough.

:11:22.:11:25.

Speechless, to be honest. For those guys to perform like that, after a

:11:26.:11:32.

four-day turnaround quite unbelievable, so, the players have

:11:33.:11:35.

bought into what we are doing, and they're having a great time at the

:11:36.:11:40.

moment. I think you can see the joy on their faces. They deserve

:11:41.:11:47.

everything they get. There are a lot of things we didn't do well tonight,

:11:48.:11:51.

and I would just like to congratulate USA on a very good

:11:52.:11:55.

performance. They played exceptionally well and they deserve

:11:56.:12:05.

the result. From us now, we've got to make sure that we recover very

:12:06.:12:10.

well and give the best account of ourselves in the last group game.

:12:11.:12:20.

Can you make it three wins out of three? We're going to enjoy tonight,

:12:21.:12:25.

and then we will do a bit of rehab and get ready for Scotland. I don't

:12:26.:12:34.

know what day it is at the moment. Next Thursday. Thank you. Very

:12:35.:12:36.

honest assessment from both coaches, confirmation there that Wales can't

:12:37.:12:43.

get through. How disappointed will Iestyn be, especially when you look

:12:44.:12:50.

at the group he was in? You thought that Wales were odds on coming in

:12:51.:12:54.

that group. It is a sad time for the Welsh people. They will be kicking

:12:55.:13:05.

themselves, because there was a lot of errors. They left it too Leyte

:13:06.:13:07.

end. Yes, a little bit too much, too late, if that is the right

:13:08.:13:15.

expression. They didn't execute very well, five or six opportunities to

:13:16.:13:21.

put the points on the board, to get the breathing space to get the USA

:13:22.:13:30.

right at the end, you would expect th two games in four days, and Terry

:13:31.:13:36.

saying that the third one is coming up shortly as well. I think, yes,

:13:37.:13:40.

they will be kicking themselves the Welsh because they missed out on an

:13:41.:13:46.

opportunity. As Iestyn, take nothing away from the USA. How fantastic

:13:47.:13:53.

they've been. Yes, Terry Matteson has been doing a great job there. I

:13:54.:14:02.

think it is fantastic for the game. Naturally, I think they're people

:14:03.:14:04.

that like contact sports, NFL is such a big part of their sporting

:14:05.:14:05.

world, I think there's space for Rugby League in America, so watch

:14:06.:14:10.

this space. A key man for them, Joseph Paulo was immense. My word,

:14:11.:14:19.

everything they touched, he touched, and Newton, and the two American

:14:20.:14:23.

attackers that one Welsh defender, the second pass there, we see skill

:14:24.:14:25.

and speed of execution to map Peterson and he is in charge of the

:14:26.:14:27.

bomb. This is the game-breaker for me. This is 8-four here but not only

:14:28.:14:31.

in charge of the bomb, the very next play, he gets himself out in

:14:32.:14:38.

position and gets himself over the line for a good try, and he's really

:14:39.:14:43.

pivotal. He was on Tuesday night down in Bristol. He was absolutely

:14:44.:14:48.

awesome and Man of the Match on that occasion. Also people that you can

:14:49.:14:57.

find some heroes in this World Cup. He certainly has put his name

:14:58.:14:59.

forward. He is playing with so much confidence, and confidence is that

:15:00.:15:01.

one ingredient and sport, when you've got it, it can make all the

:15:02.:15:02.

difference. Paulo has certainly got confidence at the moment. What is so

:15:03.:15:15.

impressive about them, Terry didn't know half the squad, didn't know

:15:16.:15:17.

each other, but they're playing like a team? Yes, played three games in

:15:18.:15:19.

nine days. It's going to be outstanding, and they do come out

:15:20.:15:20.

that group and win it, win the group in a good position. What can Iestyn

:15:21.:15:26.

hope to get out the final game? They need a big performance. A slight

:15:27.:15:36.

disappointment for all of us. I know there will be a crowd down at the

:15:37.:15:39.

Knoll down there there in their last group game. They've got to perform

:15:40.:15:46.

in the group game and put a few wrongs right. They haven't quite

:15:47.:15:53.

executed the way they wanted to do, and if you had said at the start of

:15:54.:15:56.

the competition to Iestyn we've got the USA and Italy, he would rub his

:15:57.:15:58.

hands and think there is a straight run-through. They will be

:15:59.:16:02.

disappointed. In a moment, Australia against fee bi- but next to

:16:03.:16:08.

Workington for Scotland against Italy, with both sides in touching

:16:09.:16:13.

distance of the quarterfinals. In their opening match against the

:16:14.:16:14.

highly rated Tongans, the combination of opportunism , boot of

:16:15.:16:16.

Danny Brough, and some tight calls going their way, took Scotland to a

:16:17.:16:19.

famous win. Italy's opening victory over Wales

:16:20.:16:28.

was positively laid back in comparison.

:16:29.:16:30.

Their side is packed with NRL experience and Guerra looks star of

:16:31.:16:31.

the performance. I think Brough will just be happy to

:16:32.:16:47.

get the two points and then start again because it is been quite

:16:48.:16:54.

scrappy so far. A fresh set of six. Right in front

:16:55.:17:07.

of this fix now. Here is Brough. Into Wilkes. He bounces and pinballs

:17:08.:17:12.

his way. Two metres away. Ian Henderson in a dummy half trying

:17:13.:17:18.

to squeeze their way under the sticks.

:17:19.:17:19.

Still held out. The Italian defence is holding firm. Brough tries to get

:17:20.:17:23.

the ball away quickly but under too much pressure.

:17:24.:17:33.

It rolls back, but they've got a fresh set of sixes. Russell runs

:17:34.:17:35.

through. It's not Russell. Driving for the line! Has he got the ball

:17:36.:17:47.

down? The referee is going to have a look at this one.

:17:48.:17:58.

This is a try. Russell scores. Four points for Scotland.

:17:59.:18:02.

And for Steve McCormack's side. There are legs in it there. He has

:18:03.:18:42.

dived through. Scotland could have two quick tries

:18:43.:18:52.

in a couple of minutes. Now with Tramonte.

:18:53.:19:28.

Nasso has a luck from dummy half. He drops it back through the hands

:19:29.:19:33.

Ghetti. Fending off the ball is Snowden.

:19:34.:19:46.

Not an easy man to stop in his tracks.

:19:47.:19:47.

Little kick through this time. Maybe there's not enough on it, but there

:19:48.:20:01.

is. We have got to have a look at this, though. It wasn't the tidiest

:20:02.:20:09.

of kicks. Has Seraldo got the scoreboard ticking? He's onside.

:20:10.:20:13.

Slowly. OK.

:20:14.:20:21.

OK, that's a try. He scores Italy's first try for their second game in

:20:22.:20:27.

the campaign. Very influential in their qualifying campaign.

:20:28.:20:31.

Our video referee says that it was successful. Ten points is the

:20:32.:20:42.

difference now. Scotland are defending yet again.

:20:43.:20:58.

Using the - they try to wear down that Scottish defence. Santi with

:20:59.:21:00.

another drive. Nasso brings it himself. Looks to squeeze it home.

:21:01.:21:02.

The pressure has paid off, and Italy, the try given, and Nasso,

:21:03.:21:07.

they knocked, and they knocked, and eventually the door opens, and down

:21:08.:21:13.

they crash it over the line. They fought well and got themselves

:21:14.:21:17.

back in the game. Nasso a chunky fellow, proved hard to stop there on

:21:18.:21:24.

the line. Good valuable few metres to set up

:21:25.:21:31.

the final play. Brough with the kick.

:21:32.:21:33.

The sky gets darker as the ball drops back in. They've got space on

:21:34.:21:43.

the right-hand side. Can they spread the ball back inside? They can. Addy

:21:44.:21:47.

touches down in the second minute of the second half.

:21:48.:21:51.

Hellewell has got the ball away, and it was a great ball out wide. Carter

:21:52.:22:01.

there with the drive. He has thrown the ball back to Danny Addy, so a

:22:02.:22:12.

great start for the Scots. At the managed to keep him in the

:22:13.:22:16.

field of play. So they look for the runners now,

:22:17.:22:20.

Italy. Santi takes his side up towards a

:22:21.:22:28.

few metres away. A little scamper from dummy half. Nasso has got the

:22:29.:22:33.

ball down. He has got another one. Italy equalising that early score

:22:34.:22:41.

from Scotland in the second half, and Nasso again just spotting the

:22:42.:22:46.

opportunity to getting the legs going and diving over the line from

:22:47.:22:47.

close range. Wallace fires it out. He switches it

:22:48.:23:05.

back inside. Ben Hellewell, a touchdown for Scotland. Lovely work

:23:06.:23:14.

on that right-hand side. If you look at it again, Fisher, he

:23:15.:23:18.

shows it on the inside a couple of times, the ball out to the back

:23:19.:23:22.

there to Pete Wallace, Hellewell back on the inside for a very, very

:23:23.:23:36.

good four-pointer for the Scots. Snowden was tackled inside that 20

:23:37.:23:39.

as they drive again. Can they fire it out? They can.

:23:40.:23:44.

They're in the corner. Centrone touching down for the Italians. It

:23:45.:23:46.

is try-for-try in the second half so far.

:23:47.:23:51.

Nasso again wants to keep it moving. Tries to keep his tempo up. Nasso

:23:52.:24:00.

has come back with it in support as well. Trying to stretch this

:24:01.:24:01.

Scotland defence. Holding firm, though.

:24:02.:24:10.

Covering defenders on this left-hand side of the defence. It is around,

:24:11.:24:16.

though. We're going to have a look at this one, I think. Fourth try of

:24:17.:24:29.

his Italian career, in his eighth game.

:24:30.:24:33.

Brough now with a little - he spotted a bit of space. He regains

:24:34.:24:35.

the ball. He has it. The tackle is complete, but a 25-metre run from

:24:36.:24:49.

Brough, he is opening things up. Here is Henderson, throwing it back

:24:50.:24:50.

through the hands they go to Wallace. They've got him on the

:24:51.:24:52.

right-hand side and they're in. Scotland with Ben Hellewell on the

:24:53.:25:00.

right-hand side. Regaining possession, but lovely

:25:01.:25:05.

hands, and into the right-hand corner. Great hands from all players

:25:06.:25:07.

there out on the field, just out wide to Hellewell to finish the try

:25:08.:25:11.

off. Brough with a difficult kickover.

:25:12.:25:22.

It is with his left boot. Is it good or has the pressure been too much?

:25:23.:25:24.

What a finish. 30 points apiece. A bit of a nail-biter. Toing and

:25:25.:25:32.

froing, a great effort by Scotland, and again our boys have shown great

:25:33.:25:40.

character to come back from the deficit they had, always clawing to

:25:41.:25:42.

the back of the game. The support we have had while we've been in west

:25:43.:25:50.

Cumbria is unbelievable. We would like to thank everybody from west

:25:51.:25:57.

Cumbria, from our lads, sensational effort in the end. What another

:25:58.:25:59.

great game. It is a measure of this World Cup that I am guessing most of

:26:00.:26:06.

us when we looked at the fixtures before it started, would not have

:26:07.:26:12.

picked Italy versus Scotland as a really good game. Yes, I think a

:26:13.:26:15.

measure of success of the World Cup so far has been the nations we

:26:16.:26:22.

assumed that wouldn't have performed so well which have exceeded our

:26:23.:26:28.

expectations and pulled out fantastic performances. We look at

:26:29.:26:30.

Italy in that opening game against Wales, some really stand-out

:26:31.:26:31.

performances from them individually in that team and throughout the

:26:32.:26:36.

tournament. We look at the likes of Fiji, Tonga. These nations that have

:26:37.:26:53.

really stepped up probably due to the influence of the NRL but it

:26:54.:26:59.

shows you that Rugby League is trying to spread and slowly cast our

:27:00.:27:07.

net further. Scotland very much one of those teams that's stood up and

:27:08.:27:14.

stepped up. One of the home nations that have stamped their mark in west

:27:15.:27:32.

Cumbria, there are two big crowds, 9,000 each time, and they've got

:27:33.:27:34.

with behind the Scottish team and delivered. You see they're sat here

:27:35.:27:39.

thinking deservedly where they are in the position, the position

:27:40.:27:45.

they're in charge of own destiny towards the back end of this group

:27:46.:27:49.

stage, and they thoroughly deserve it. They played well. We've seen

:27:50.:27:51.

some of the tries. They don't tell the story of him that they're good

:27:52.:27:58.

but it's the quality of the work that

:27:59.:28:06.

They keep the Paul alive, and Henderson keeps the ball alive.

:28:07.:28:20.

Wallace keeps the ball alive, and Scotland keep the ball alive. They

:28:21.:28:25.

get in the corner and finish the play.

:28:26.:28:26.

He could have won it, couldn't he? He could have. What did he do wrong,

:28:27.:28:33.

there, John? You dropped plenty! I am not the man to be giving that

:28:34.:28:40.

device! Danny Brough is such a controlling influence on that

:28:41.:28:42.

Scotland team that you think they can do well. The decision-making of

:28:43.:28:43.

their team of Wallace, Brough, and Henderson, those three guys usually

:28:44.:28:51.

get it right and that is why Scotland are doing well. I know it

:28:52.:28:57.

is history, he opt today play for Scotland, the man of steel, why

:28:58.:28:59.

isn't he in England, should he not be playing for England? He chose to

:29:00.:29:02.

play for Scotland. You've got to respect that. There is a history

:29:03.:29:12.

there with his family, and he has played for Scotland previously. Do I

:29:13.:29:15.

think he could contribute to the England squad? Definitely. There is

:29:16.:29:17.

a reason why he is the man of steel, and it is that control and

:29:18.:29:22.

influence, that all-round ability with any team that he plays in, he

:29:23.:29:31.

has real value in kicking passing, and a running threat. That would fit

:29:32.:29:33.

well in any team in world rugby. Looking ahead to Thursday, Scotland

:29:34.:29:35.

versus USA, a massive game, but for the USA, that is a third game in

:29:36.:29:46.

nine days? And that is the challenge for them. Terry Paterson didn't know

:29:47.:29:52.

what day of the week it was. Both of them need it as well, don't

:29:53.:30:07.

they, because USA are not guaranteed, either? Yes, exactly.

:30:08.:30:12.

It's going to be a cracker, and hopefully it will be a sell-out

:30:13.:30:18.

again and get the fans behind it, it will be really good. It is tough,

:30:19.:30:27.

but again, when you looked at the fixtures, you really wouldn't have

:30:28.:30:32.

pinned this game as such a pivotal game USA versus Scotland? I think

:30:33.:30:34.

that is what has made, why it has captured everybody's imagination,

:30:35.:30:36.

this tournament, there are shock results, performances, superstars

:30:37.:30:39.

coming out of the woodwork that we didn't know about. Scotland have

:30:40.:30:47.

been part of that team. You look at the spine of the team, and pick up

:30:48.:30:58.

on what Richard and John has said that Russell is a confident

:30:59.:31:03.

fullback. You can't take any of these teams

:31:04.:31:05.

lightly. I would love to see it, but it is difficult for those sides to

:31:06.:31:19.

win a big game against the likes of Australia and New Zealand. They're

:31:20.:31:20.

jam-packed full of star players. It is very difficult for them, but

:31:21.:31:26.

not unachievable. We did see Italy beating - It's right. I think John

:31:27.:31:34.

has pretty much nailed it, but there's going to be a team in the

:31:35.:31:36.

semifinals that is going to have to play what we are calling the big

:31:37.:31:48.

three, if you like, Australia, New Zealand, and England. There is

:31:49.:31:51.

another team that's got to go in there. Why not Italy? It's in their

:31:52.:31:54.

own hands. Time to catch up with the favourites, Australia, who were

:31:55.:32:03.

taking on Fiji and the elements at a wind swept Langtree Park in St

:32:04.:32:06.

Helen's. Last tackle play. They take it to

:32:07.:32:45.

the short side. Another great kick. They may get the tackle count. They

:32:46.:32:52.

will. Fiji, full set. 20 minutes out from the line.

:32:53.:32:59.

Sims takes the tackle. Sims gets them close. Chance has gone up for

:33:00.:33:07.

fee bi-. The St Helen's fans have adopted Fiji as their side tonight.

:33:08.:33:11.

Penalty Fij Nine metres out, ten to the side of the posts.

:33:12.:33:18.

They didn't post a point. They got an opportunity to put their

:33:19.:33:34.

noses in front, and that is what they're going to do.

:33:35.:33:35.

They leave the kangaroos no layer. It is Fiji two, Australia zero.

:33:36.:33:37.

Changes already to Fiji. Looks like a young Willy Mason to me

:33:38.:33:50.

making the tackle here, going down low.

:33:51.:33:52.

15 metres away from the line, Australia still chasing their first

:33:53.:34:02.

points of the night, played by Marles. A lovely ball.

:34:03.:34:07.

There is a big moment for the young Canberra back-rower.

:34:08.:34:13.

He scores for Australia 15 minutes in, four points to two.

:34:14.:34:24.

With the elation on his face. The first game for Australia, and he has

:34:25.:34:26.

run under a great - he took the line or took the ball right to the line.

:34:27.:34:35.

29 minutes away from the line. Smith right out the line. That is a nice -

:34:36.:34:44.

Smith, Thurson England. Play on for the kangaroos.

:34:45.:34:57.

Greg Inglis. Beautiful! Second try to the kangaroos!

:34:58.:35:07.

Tremendous play from the Australians there.

:35:08.:35:17.

He pops it out the back, and a great try there for the Aussies.

:35:18.:35:30.

First and second kick. It is a tough on. That's going to go nowhere near

:35:31.:35:31.

the posts. Ten points to two.

:35:32.:35:40.

He shakes the head. Nice play there.

:35:41.:35:47.

Corbyn did the -- Koful rbin did the tough work there. Jennings is there!

:35:48.:35:56.

Try-scorer in the grand final. Now try-scorer here for Australia at St

:35:57.:36:01.

Helen's. Nice control and composure. Equal numbers out wide. They had

:36:02.:36:06.

numbers to the right as well. Thurston backs it for Inglis. Caught

:36:07.:36:13.

a little bit and field, going for the high tackle on Jennings.

:36:14.:36:24.

It's normally a temple with your two palms. You put them up in front of

:36:25.:36:34.

your nose and you pray. That is the advice of one of the best.

:36:35.:36:43.

Thurston! That is one of the best goals of his career!

:36:44.:36:48.

I bet he enjoyed that. He loved it. Look at the smile on the face of JT!

:36:49.:36:56.

Papalii is getting a lot of game time. Spin, and spin again. Play on

:36:57.:37:07.

is the call. Smith was on to it. Over the top for Thurston.

:37:08.:37:09.

Thurston almost away. 11 metres from the line. Last tackle. Kangaroos,

:37:10.:37:14.

Smith, one of the kickers out of play. Cherry-Evans the alternative.

:37:15.:37:21.

It's kept alive, and they will score. Morrison is over. Morris

:37:22.:37:24.

scores the try. Australia have their fourth try.

:37:25.:37:28.

Tremendous kick there from Cherry-Evans. Really well-weighted

:37:29.:37:36.

but a great leap out wide there to Hain. Looking at it again, just

:37:37.:37:40.

plenty - no pressure whatsoever on the kicker there, Cherry-Evans.

:37:41.:37:47.

There he goes, Thurston, for a second sideline conversion!

:37:48.:37:54.

Oh, what a beauty. Jonathan Thurston, a goal-kicking clinic!

:37:55.:38:10.

Thurston has got it to Jennings. Jennings has - Jennings!

:38:11.:38:14.

What was that? He has thrown a dart that's missed the board. Landed in

:38:15.:38:23.

someone's scooter glass! Thurston has been good again

:38:24.:38:30.

disappoint. This is buoyed backing into -- this is Boyd backing into

:38:31.:38:38.

the tackle there. Cherry-Evans, sprinting away.

:38:39.:38:52.

DCE, Daley Cherry-Evans scores for Australia. Their fifth try of the

:38:53.:39:05.

fight. This is beautiful play. Now for Peter.

:39:06.:39:08.

Over halfway. Here goes, he has shown enough of the two weeks to say

:39:09.:39:19.

he's going to be in the top 17. Good ball inside.

:39:20.:39:23.

He got that left arm free. Passed to Lewis.

:39:24.:39:24.

Lewis gets over for the kangaroos. But it is a try that has the DNA of

:39:25.:39:38.

Greg Inglis all over it, 32-2. England is back on the inside,

:39:39.:39:40.

brushes away from a tackle queuing up. I thought Jerry Evans might --

:39:41.:39:42.

Cherry-Evans might have got a double, but he finds Lewis.

:39:43.:39:58.

Too much speed. Beautiful Rugby League.

:39:59.:40:03.

Ritchie, it is a measure of quite how strong this Australian squad is

:40:04.:40:07.

that they can leave out their player of the year, Cooper Cronk, Billy

:40:08.:40:16.

Slater, and still you're looking at that line-up going where are the

:40:17.:40:22.

weaknesses? It is scary thinking of how many players didn't play but

:40:23.:40:28.

they still come out with a performance like that. It is the

:40:29.:40:35.

class throughout the side. And you've only got to look at from one

:40:36.:40:41.

to 17, it is quite scary, really. John Jonathan Thurston does

:40:42.:40:45.

everything that is key to Australia. He is the general on the field. His

:40:46.:40:58.

carriage, carrying it 30 times in the game.

:40:59.:41:03.

He makes good decisions. That is probably why he is the world's

:41:04.:41:06.

number one number seven, , arguably. He has got a hand off. He has

:41:07.:41:19.

already told Inglis to come on his inside as the play unfolds. You will

:41:20.:41:32.

see the inside option of Inglis. He has got the inside ball to Inglis

:41:33.:41:40.

and a short and long ball to Jennings out wide. One of the things

:41:41.:41:46.

that distinguishes Thurston from other people is that he has four

:41:47.:41:50.

options there, and he rarely takes the wrong option. Under pressure, he

:41:51.:41:55.

does the right thing. His goal-kicking in the crunch times of

:41:56.:42:02.

games is always on the money. People have a question mark about his

:42:03.:42:14.

kicking, his accuracy, but when the pressure is on, he is spot on. He

:42:15.:42:18.

won't put pressure on his other players as well, which you see the

:42:19.:42:29.

money ball or the really pressured pass that could be an area. He will

:42:30.:42:34.

take the tackle. One thing to reinforce what Ritchie said, he was

:42:35.:42:42.

setting the play up with the four options. Three players before it

:42:43.:42:44.

came. Inglis' metres are impressive, are

:42:45.:42:57.

not they? Which you would expect from full back because he carries

:42:58.:43:05.

the ball back. Is - he is up there in the freak category, but this man

:43:06.:43:15.

is a world-class performer. I just don't know what to say. He is quick,

:43:16.:43:22.

strong, look at that. There is a, "See you later," and another one,

:43:23.:43:24.

and another one, and a flick-pass. Why can't they tackle him? As a

:43:25.:43:33.

defender, what you try to do is get as close to the attacking player as

:43:34.:43:39.

you can with your feet, get that close to them that they can't evade

:43:40.:43:44.

them. His arms are three times the lengths

:43:45.:43:54.

of his legs, but he's one of the world's best players.

:43:55.:43:56.

Do you put him on fullback? With the spine of the teaming Melbourne, I

:43:57.:43:59.

think that Cronk, Cameron Smith, Slater makes sense, but there's 200

:44:00.:44:11.

metres in a game, but causes absolute carnage throughout the game

:44:12.:44:13.

from fullback. There is an argument he should play in that. The key for

:44:14.:44:18.

Australia is to get him as much ball as possible.

:44:19.:44:20.

They got more there obviously because of the option he is playing

:44:21.:44:28.

and the pivotal role that he plays at fullback there for his club side

:44:29.:44:31.

as well, but I think one of the keys and one of the success, they will

:44:32.:44:40.

try to release him as early as possible against their opposition

:44:41.:44:44.

going through this tournament. How does Australiaia's game work in

:44:45.:44:50.

terms of shapes? Wigan warriors have structure and it works really well

:44:51.:44:56.

for them. All of a sudden, it up folds, and

:44:57.:45:02.

you get three or four options again. The breakthrough, and Cherry-Evans

:45:03.:45:08.

is under the sticks. What Australia are great at, and they showed

:45:09.:45:16.

against England, is when t defence isn't quite right, the numbers are

:45:17.:45:18.

correct or there's a lapse in the defensive line, Australia take

:45:19.:45:21.

advantage of it. It is not necessarily through players that

:45:22.:45:26.

have worked on the training ground but instinctive players. When you're

:45:27.:45:32.

reacting like that, it is difficult to defend. You're predicting

:45:33.:45:34.

something whi Australia isn't sure how it's going to unfold themselves.

:45:35.:45:39.

Let's not forget about the skill levels of the big blokes in the

:45:40.:45:49.

middle there. They're big, well over 100 kilos yet they've got their good

:45:50.:45:51.

decision-making process for knowing when somebody is there. Where is the

:45:52.:45:54.

weakness? How do you beat them? England showed them in the first 20

:45:55.:46:04.

minutes against Australia how to beat them: to be direct. It is a

:46:05.:46:07.

impgame at times, to hit the ball at speed, cause a bit of carnage, play

:46:08.:46:11.

the ball quickly, and then off the back of that, get stuck into them

:46:12.:46:16.

with some defence. You certainly have to throw

:46:17.:46:22.

something at them other than we are doing this in five drives. I think

:46:23.:46:24.

England did that, make the defensive decisions, and don't be intimidated

:46:25.:46:33.

by what they are, they are flesh and blood, and we have the talent in the

:46:34.:46:40.

England team, and there are other teams in the World Cup thinking

:46:41.:46:48.

they've got the talent not only to stand up to the Australians, but

:46:49.:46:50.

beat them at their own game if necessary.

:46:51.:46:56.

I know England are desperate to have another crack at them because as

:46:57.:47:05.

showed in that 25, to minutes, they want to see if they can do it for

:47:06.:47:08.

the full 80. Australia are a quality side, but they can be broken down.

:47:09.:47:21.

England needed to get their World Cup campaign up and running after

:47:22.:47:23.

losing that opening match to Australia last week. On Saturday,

:47:24.:47:31.

they took on Ireland at a sold-out stadium in Huddersfield.

:47:32.:47:37.

It's a day for England to put on some razzle dazzle.

:47:38.:47:56.

It should be an England try. It will be eventually. Not the start Ireland

:47:57.:47:58.

wanted but certainly the start that England wanted.

:47:59.:48:14.

Ryan Hall! Here is Chase, Chase with a kick,

:48:15.:48:20.

after this right-hand side. Briscoe, and scores! A fabulous England try!

:48:21.:48:35.

Across the top, England threaten again.

:48:36.:48:44.

Briscoe steps back on the inside. Turns the defender inside out, and

:48:45.:48:51.

Tom Briscoe literally moments has got a second. England racing to 18

:48:52.:48:56.

points to nil. We need a response from Ireland now,

:48:57.:49:06.

don't we? There comes Watkins through the gap.

:49:07.:49:10.

Sin feel There comes Watkins through the gap.

:49:11.:49:12.

Sin feel ha There comes Watkins through the gap.

:49:13.:49:21.

Sin feel has his (Sinfield has his choice. Hall for the hat trick. Hall

:49:22.:49:26.

has got a hat trick. My word! An eave try for Brent Ferris. That

:49:27.:49:34.

will be very popular in these parts. It's four tries that England have

:49:35.:49:42.

scored without Ireland touching the ball.

:49:43.:49:52.

Look how he's got a - inside for Callum Watkins.

:49:53.:50:08.

Runners are coming here. Widdup to Tomkins.

:50:09.:50:11.

He runs it to another. He chases after this. And he

:50:12.:50:20.

certainly got there first. So, what did you make of England? I

:50:21.:50:26.

thought they were good. I thought the first half particularly, good

:50:27.:50:29.

shape, structure. Maybe a few issues on decision-making, but I think they

:50:30.:50:37.

will be pleased with what they dished up. The weather came in a

:50:38.:50:42.

little bit in the second half and made it scruffy, so they weren't

:50:43.:50:45.

quite at clinical. I think they will be really pleased. A couple of

:50:46.:50:57.

changes to the England side, a couple enforced. What did you make

:50:58.:50:59.

up of Tom Briscoe coming in, Sean owe Laughlin, is that a good move?

:51:00.:51:04.

Does that strengthen England? Obviously, Sean O'Laughlin is a

:51:05.:51:11.

world-class player. Potentially what Steve could do is move Burgess up to

:51:12.:51:14.

the front row, I think. I think the side has got good

:51:15.:51:20.

balance there, a lot of influential players, but O'Laughlin without

:51:21.:51:26.

doubt would be in my starting thin. We talk about shape with Australia.

:51:27.:51:29.

What is that pack giving with England in shape and structure? I

:51:30.:51:34.

thought how simply England set up their plays. They have a lot of the

:51:35.:51:44.

big guys, the props carrying the ball with support on the outside,

:51:45.:51:46.

with the option then to play out the back to a half back, and

:51:47.:51:55.

consistently set the shape up. On the back of that, gives them the

:51:56.:52:00.

ability to move the ball, and we have waves of attack here as you see

:52:01.:52:04.

where players are pairing up wide to potentially get the ball there.

:52:05.:52:11.

Chris Hall chooses to play the ball here. With all that shape choosing

:52:12.:52:17.

to play the ball is a great option but these players are designed to

:52:18.:52:21.

get England on the front foot so that when the speed of the play of

:52:22.:52:28.

the ball increases, they can catch out vulnerable defences.

:52:29.:52:32.

This is where we see they take the option to move the ball to play out

:52:33.:52:38.

the back. Actually to shift the ball and create some space. It results in

:52:39.:52:47.

results in a try. That gives you a bit of a glimpse in how you break a

:52:48.:52:54.

game down. You may well have set up plays ready to go to break a defence

:52:55.:53:02.

down but choosing just to play the ball, building to a game is crucial.

:53:03.:53:04.

I think the challenge for England would be control and having

:53:05.:53:09.

discipline on when they move the ball and when they don't. When they

:53:10.:53:25.

play direct, they look fantastic. When they play the ball quickly and

:53:26.:53:29.

then try and move the ball, they look great but maybe sometimes they

:53:30.:53:30.

can be, if anything, criticism is too lateral. Steve will be happy

:53:31.:53:34.

with the shape of the team. They've all got the ability to play

:53:35.:53:43.

as well, so I think the challenge is the decision-making process as to

:53:44.:53:46.

just to go north to south, speed the play of the ball up because, against

:53:47.:53:54.

the top teams, you need tempo, a little bit of front-foot football,

:53:55.:54:00.

so that decision-making process, as John has outlined, that Steve will

:54:01.:54:02.

be happy with the shape, people in the right places and now they have

:54:03.:54:15.

to make the right decisions. If you get your shape and structure right

:54:16.:54:17.

how key is Chase breaking down Australia? Some of the things he has

:54:18.:54:19.

shown with the ball, time and time again, he has signed for the Red

:54:20.:54:29.

Devils the next season. He's really key. They need to get the ball in

:54:30.:54:34.

his hands. They need to give it him. The more times he has his hands on

:54:35.:54:38.

the ball, the more dangerous England's attack will be. The

:54:39.:54:44.

challenge comes for England. Rangi is an unstructured sort of

:54:45.:54:51.

player and fitting him into that is key. Playing off-the-cuff for

:54:52.:54:56.

England will be something that will have to do at some stage. If they

:54:57.:55:05.

want to win the World Cup, they have to come up with players like this to

:55:06.:55:09.

win the World Cup. The structure is great. It lets everybody know where

:55:10.:55:15.

they should be. I think Widdup was impressive when

:55:16.:55:21.

he came on the field. You have to say against Ireland, you wouldn't

:55:22.:55:23.

scratch your heads too much in saying it was the right choice, but

:55:24.:55:33.

we are hoping that England progress and they get to a higher level

:55:34.:55:37.

against New Zealand and against Australia over which the

:55:38.:55:38.

semi-finalists or the quarterfinalists. I think that Chase

has to play because of the threat he offers to do something different

:55:42.:55:45.

against different teams. Let's not forget Sinfield in

:55:46.:55:52.

big-pressure games knows how to respond. Next week, Fiji will pose a

:55:53.:55:54.

few more problems to them than Ireland did? Yes. I think there was

:55:55.:56:02.

a sense that they just held back Fiji in the game against Australia.

:56:03.:56:09.

They know that the big game is against England this week, and they

:56:10.:56:10.

will be absolutely fired up. They've got big aggressive guys. Some big

:56:11.:56:15.

aggressive kids who can cause some carnage for England, and that's

:56:16.:56:22.

probably summarisations the Fijian team, there is a lot of aggression

:56:23.:56:26.

there. That is something England are going to have to cope with. England

:56:27.:56:30.

will need to be on their mettle, they need to be ahead of the

:56:31.:56:36.

quarterfinals for this? They went into the Australian game and got

:56:37.:56:44.

more credit for themselves. Then they've gone and done a good job

:56:45.:56:50.

against Ireland, so this is another building step to obviously the

:56:51.:56:52.

quarters and the bigger games to come, hopefully. Here are the key

:56:53.:56:53.

games ahead this week: We

:56:54.:57:13.

are after your Twitter pics from matches you're at. Send us your

:57:14.:57:23.

Rugby Leag photos: We will use the best ones here and on

:57:24.:57:28.

the BBC sport website. But you might have to go some to beat this

:57:29.:57:32.

particular picture! Ritchie, over to you, explain yourself! Is this what

:57:33.:57:47.

you get up to in your spare time? She makes me wear it all the time.

:57:48.:57:49.

It was a stag do last night. We have another photo because you had a busy

:57:50.:57:56.

night as well, because, Helen, was on her stag do, and you managed to

:57:57.:58:04.

sneak into that picture as well! She got off lightly! We haven't had

:58:05.:58:05.

any pictures from your 30th birthday, sadly. It was very sedate

:58:06.:58:18.

evening, very civilised. None of this malarkey going on. What stands

:58:19.:58:22.

out for you, brine? Huge success, so far. Competitive football play. I

:58:23.:58:24.

think that's going to continue next week, if you're not watching it on

:58:25.:58:30.

the BBC, you need to get out there and support one of the games. It's

:58:31.:58:37.

been fabulous to see big stadiums, big crowds, everyone buying into it

:58:38.:58:41.

all. It all looks fantastic, everyone is behind it. A positive

:58:42.:58:43.

momentum. We are back next Sunday at 11. 11.25 pm. Expect more fireworks

:58:44.:58:44.

then. Good night. It is an honour, I shan't let you

:58:45.:59:14.

down. Easily said, Constable. Harder to prove.

:59:15.:59:17.

This sideshow is now shut down.
