Hello. Welcome to the BBC Sport Centre. I'm Karthi Gnanasegaram.

:00:00.:00:13.

Over the next 15 minutes we'll look ahead to the weekend's sports action

:00:14.:00:16.

with the latest news and interviews. This is Saturday Sporstday.

:00:17.:00:29.

Coming up on the programme: Six birdies for Bubba gives the American

:00:30.:00:34.

the lead at the halfway stage of the Masters. Exhilarating, dangerous and

:00:35.:00:40.

back in the UK. One of London2012's most popular sports returns. We'll

:00:41.:00:44.

preview the BMX World Cup with World Champion Liam Phillips. And the

:00:45.:00:48.

emotional story of the teenager who's left the traumas of Helmand

:00:49.:00:51.

for a new life in leafy Buckinghamshire where he's training

:00:52.:00:52.

for tomorrow's London Marathon. But before all of that let's take a

:00:53.:00:56.

look at today's sports headlines. Rotherham United's failure to beat

:00:57.:01:09.

Bradford last night in League One means Wolverhampton Wanderers will

:01:10.:01:12.

be promoted to the Championship if they win at Crewe today. Burnley

:01:13.:01:17.

could secure promotion to the Premier League later too.

:01:18.:01:19.

Superleague leaders St Helens maintained their 100% record this

:01:20.:01:22.

season, winning their eighth game in a row coming back with three late

:01:23.:01:25.

tries to beat second-placed Castleford 30-28.

:01:26.:01:29.

And Great Britain added two more gold medals to their tally at the

:01:30.:01:34.

Paracycling Track World Championships in Mexico winning both

:01:35.:01:37.

the men's and women's kilo time-trials. More on that in a

:01:38.:01:41.

moment. But let's start with golf's first Major of the year, the

:01:42.:01:48.

Masters. The 2012 Champion, Bubba Watson, has a three-shot lead at the

:01:49.:01:52.

halfway stage of the tournament. It wasn't a great day for Rory McIlroy

:01:53.:01:55.

though, who only just made the cut. Hazel Irvine is at the immaculate

:01:56.:01:59.

Augusta National course for us with the details.

:02:00.:02:05.

Yes, one of the great must see events in any sporting year, and

:02:06.:02:07.

this was the look of the leaderboard heading into the weekend. And it was

:02:08.:02:12.

Bubba Watson, trying to become only the 17th man in history to win the

:02:13.:02:15.

green jacket twice after his victory in 2012. A three shot lead above

:02:16.:02:23.

John Senden of Australia then came the Scandinavian challenge, Thomas

:02:24.:02:26.

Bjorn and Jonas Blixt, and then the defending champion, Adam Scott.

:02:27.:02:30.

Jordan Spieth giving a great account of himself in his first Masters.

:02:31.:02:39.

Henrik Stenson is one over par. But so many in the mix here. Former PGA

:02:40.:02:46.

champion, Mr Paul Azinger is with us. You speak from experience. What

:02:47.:02:53.

is the difficulty of being a Major champion, having to try to replicate

:02:54.:02:56.

the success, as Bubba Watson is trying to do? It can be tough and

:02:57.:03:01.

challenging. There's a lot of demands on your time and sometimes

:03:02.:03:04.

it is hard to say no, but you have to capitalise on the fact that you

:03:05.:03:09.

are a Major champion. If you lose a little focus on your game and start

:03:10.:03:13.

to focus on capitalising, monetarily, on what you have

:03:14.:03:17.

accomplished, but Bubba Watson seems to have turned it around. A couple

:03:18.:03:23.

of second places and a victory, and now a three shot lead. How'd you

:03:24.:03:25.

like the look of the leaderboard going into the weekend? It's pretty

:03:26.:03:30.

good seeing as there's no Tiger Woods. You have the future of golf

:03:31.:03:37.

with Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth. The story is beginning to unfold. John

:03:38.:03:41.

Senden in that last group with Bubba Watson, they are polar opposites.

:03:42.:03:46.

John Senden is very steady, not a great part. Bubba Watson can

:03:47.:03:51.

overpower a golf course. An unpolished player, never had a

:03:52.:03:54.

lesson in his life, he's leading the Masters and has a chance to win it

:03:55.:03:57.

for the second time. It's remarkable. What should we expect on

:03:58.:04:02.

the third day? What changes out on the course? I think Saturday is more

:04:03.:04:07.

difficult. It seems like the locations are more challenging. The

:04:08.:04:10.

first two days, they were pretty tough. On Sunday, they saved the

:04:11.:04:16.

whole locations and create all type of excitement. I just can't wait for

:04:17.:04:23.

it to unfold. Yes, and it will unfold shortly, because we will be

:04:24.:04:27.

on the air with highlights from the second round on BBC One. Then live

:04:28.:04:33.

coverage of the third round, on BBC Two tonight, from 7:30pm. Tomorrow,

:04:34.:04:38.

the all-important closing round. So, this weekend, staying in is the new

:04:39.:04:45.

going out. Catch you later. I will definitely be watching. Let's move

:04:46.:04:49.

from Georgia to Glasgow for the latest from the British Swimming

:04:50.:04:51.

Championships. It's the final opportunity to qualify for this

:04:52.:04:54.

summer's Commonwealth Games where it's hoped the sport can restore a

:04:55.:04:57.

little pride after disappointing Olympics and World Championship

:04:58.:04:59.

performances recently. Nick Hope reports.

:05:00.:05:04.

Welcome to Glasgow where this week the fans and the athletes alike have

:05:05.:05:09.

been getting a little taster of what to expect. Scotland's Olympic silver

:05:10.:05:17.

medallist won here in the 200 metres. Mike Jamieson won't it all

:05:18.:05:23.

his way over 100 metres because Ross Murdoch went quicker than him ahead

:05:24.:05:27.

of the final. Fran Halsall is one of the strongest Commonwealth prospects

:05:28.:05:32.

and she will go for gold in her 50 metres freestyle race later. Look

:05:33.:05:36.

out for the former medallist George Davies of Wales in the hundred

:05:37.:05:41.

metres backstroke final. -- Georgia Davies. There is live coverage from

:05:42.:05:45.

6pm. 5live Sports Extra will also bring

:05:46.:05:49.

you commentaries of this season's Women's Super League which starts on

:05:50.:05:56.

Wednesday. There have been some changes to the set-up of the WSL

:05:57.:06:00.

this year. Emily Croydon has more. The big new talking point has been

:06:01.:06:03.

the introduction of Manchester City into the top flight. Like their male

:06:04.:06:07.

counterparts, they have been investing heavily in the top talent.

:06:08.:06:11.

They have signed for England internationals, including the new

:06:12.:06:16.

England captain, Steph Horton. Manchester City want to do

:06:17.:06:19.

everything properly, but we have to be realistic. It's our first season

:06:20.:06:27.

together -- Steph Cowton. It is a new season, new staff, but we have

:06:28.:06:31.

to take it as it comes and see how we go and progress, but the last two

:06:32.:06:34.

months we have trained really well and prepared for season well. City

:06:35.:06:39.

are not the only new team in the top division. Lincoln Ladies have moved

:06:40.:06:43.

to Nottingham and will play as Notts County. But it is the introduction

:06:44.:06:49.

of the second level that is the big change, which brings promotion and

:06:50.:06:53.

relegation the first time since the creation of the league in 2011. It

:06:54.:06:58.

all gets underway next week, and City's trip to play Liverpool is the

:06:59.:07:00.

highlight. Great Britain claimed two golds and

:07:01.:07:06.

a bronze at the Paracycling Track World Championships overnight. That

:07:07.:07:09.

takes the team's haul at the midpoint of the competition to four

:07:10.:07:13.

medals. With more details is our reporter in Mexico, David McDaid.

:07:14.:07:18.

What a day it was here, two gold medals for Team GB and two world

:07:19.:07:29.

records as well. First we saw Sophie Thornhill take nearly three seconds

:07:30.:07:32.

off the previous record in the time trial in their first-ever event. To

:07:33.:07:38.

think this is our first event at Maine Championships, win it, it's

:07:39.:07:43.

still not really sunk in. Can't believe it at the moment. Neil

:07:44.:07:49.

Fachie and Pete Mitchell got the first ever sub minute tandem time.

:07:50.:07:56.

It's been very hard to break it, but it's very special, and we can

:07:57.:07:59.

treasure it for ever. Jon-Allan Butterworth also took a medal in the

:08:00.:08:04.

pursuit, and we could have more British medals to celebrate later

:08:05.:08:09.

today, because Butterworth, Jody Cundy and Sarah Storey are all going

:08:10.:08:10.

in their strongest events. Those Paracycling World

:08:11.:08:15.

Championships are a good indicator of form with two years to go until

:08:16.:08:19.

the Rio Games. And on Friday, it's the first round of the BMX

:08:20.:08:22.

SuperCross World Cup which starts in Manchester and doubles up as a 2016

:08:23.:08:25.

Olympic qualifying event. Liam Phillips finished eighth at the

:08:26.:08:29.

London Games, but went on to become World Champion in 2013. He's been

:08:30.:08:30.

speaking to Tim Hague. One of the highlights of the London

:08:31.:08:41.

Olympics is coming back to Britain. The sport of BMX visits Manchester

:08:42.:08:47.

for the World Cup. And the best male rider in the world will be there.

:08:48.:08:54.

The champion of the world is Liam Phillips of Great Britain! Last year

:08:55.:09:02.

was a remarkable season. It's the best season I've had for the

:09:03.:09:05.

duration of my career, and I'm hopeful I can continue that, moving

:09:06.:09:09.

forward. Obviously with the first World Cup being here, in my

:09:10.:09:12.

backyard, that's a good place to start a season. It's only when you

:09:13.:09:16.

are up here that you realise how intimidating the start of a BMX

:09:17.:09:20.

races. Eight metres above the ground and plenty of jumps to keep you

:09:21.:09:24.

occupied as well. It looks great fun, but it's not without danger.

:09:25.:09:35.

And the only man to win a gold in Olympic BMX says he gets scared, so

:09:36.:09:38.

you know it is frightening. When you are there in the final, all nervous,

:09:39.:09:42.

you ask yourself, why am I doing this? Why do I need this? But when

:09:43.:09:50.

the gate drops, you don't even think about it. You just forget about

:09:51.:09:54.

everything. If somebody says they don't get nervous, they are lying.

:09:55.:09:58.

We all do. It's just part of the sport, part of any sport. So, nerves

:09:59.:10:04.

of steel are required, even for a double Olympic champion, but that

:10:05.:10:07.

fear factor has not stopped many a youngster hopping onto a BMX. It's

:10:08.:10:12.

one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and Liam Phillips thinks he

:10:13.:10:18.

knows why. I believe that there is not a better entry-level cycling

:10:19.:10:23.

sport than BMX. It gives you everything you need. The kid gets to

:10:24.:10:26.

12 or 13 and decides he wants to race on the track, or on the road,

:10:27.:10:31.

or do any form of cycling, the grounding that BMX gives that kid is

:10:32.:10:32.

second to none. In terms of numbers getting involved

:10:33.:10:39.

on a weekly basis cycling is in Sport England's top three sports.

:10:40.:10:42.

But when it comes to participation and inspiration, you can't get much

:10:43.:10:50.

bigger than the London Marathon. Around 30,000 runners take to the

:10:51.:10:54.

streets of the capital but the story of a teenager from Afghanistan's

:10:55.:10:57.

decision to do so is a particularly emotional one. The story starts in

:10:58.:11:05.

Helmand. It was the 20th of August, 2009, presidential election day. My

:11:06.:11:13.

brother and I were riding in town, trying to go and see the election

:11:14.:11:18.

process, and suddenly we got hit by a Taliban rocket, and I got hit in

:11:19.:11:26.

the eye with shrapnel. I was unconscious, but I survived. My

:11:27.:11:32.

brother didn't. He had a bigger piece of shrapnel go into his head.

:11:33.:11:36.

This whole head was taken away. Very shocking. So...

:11:37.:11:43.

This is Najeeb Afghan, and five years after tragedy struck him and

:11:44.:11:52.

his family in Helmand. After a brief return to Afghanistan, the chance of

:11:53.:11:55.

a scholarship in England to study for his A-levels presented itself.

:11:56.:12:01.

He is now studying at Stowe School, and it's on this track where he

:12:02.:12:05.

discovered his passion for running, breaking records in the

:12:06.:12:08.

steeplechase, and now he has a target of completing the London

:12:09.:12:11.

Marathon. His hard work and dedication have been a source of

:12:12.:12:14.

inspiration for those here at school. We are terrifically proud of

:12:15.:12:21.

him. He has really raised our global awareness of the issues in

:12:22.:12:25.

Afghanistan. It is really powerful. And it brings home to us what is

:12:26.:12:32.

going on there, which when it is something in the newspapers or on

:12:33.:12:36.

the television doesn't quite convey the reality of being there on the

:12:37.:12:40.

ground. Najeeb Afghan has set himself the ultimate test. His

:12:41.:12:43.

athletics coach is someone who knows that the hard work and determination

:12:44.:12:47.

he has put in will pay off during the marathon. I am absolutely full

:12:48.:12:51.

of confidence that he will get around the court and complete the

:12:52.:12:55.

marathon. I think he might be in for a bit of a surprise when he gets to

:12:56.:13:01.

the 30 kilometre mark, but his only run up -- as any runner will tell

:13:02.:13:04.

you, that doesn't really start till you've done 20 miles, but he is

:13:05.:13:09.

determined and he brings that sort of attitude to his training in

:13:10.:13:13.

particular, but to everything he does in his life. Najeeb Afghan will

:13:14.:13:18.

take it all in his stride, but what would give him the greatest

:13:19.:13:22.

satisfaction is completing the marathon and knowing that he has

:13:23.:13:24.

helped other children in his situation. I can imagine myself

:13:25.:13:29.

jumping into the, shouting, thank God, I am done, I have achieved this

:13:30.:13:41.

-- into the air. I will be happy for the good cause, to get these

:13:42.:13:44.

children's education. It will be amazing. Good luck to Najeeb and all

:13:45.:13:52.

of the other runners. That's all for now. Goodbye.

:13:53.:14:02.

Probably not seen as the most popular job.

:14:03.:14:04.

When I say I hate them, I mean I hate them.

:14:05.:14:06.

Who put that on it? Where's he gone?

:14:07.:14:07.

If there's one thing that drives us all crazy... This is wrong!

:14:08.:14:11.

..it's parking. Just take your heart out and leave it at home.

:14:12.:14:14.

For some people, yellow lines are the end of life as we know it.

:14:15.:14:17.

For heaven's sake, this is a Sussex village!

:14:18.:14:22.
