Ospreys v Blues Scrum V Live Pro 12

Scrum V Live is back. Tonight, they welcome the Blues who haven't won on

the road all season. The Pro 12 is just heating up. Last weekend, Wales

remembered how to score tries and remembered how to smile. The Six

Nations may be over but it has left its mark. The Blues have two stars

out for the rest of the season. One Osprey was knocked flat out but got

straight back up again and life in the Pro 12 continues. International

team-mates who locked arms become rivals again and lock horns. Those

who stood side-by-side must now go head to head.

Blues has gone. A casualty of poor results and those left behind have

things to prove. These are two proud regions and this is a huge local

straightaway and pick up where they left off.

A slightly different fortune for the Blues since Scrum V Live was last on

air. What shape do they find themselves in tonight?

There is no hiding from the fact it has been a disappointing season and

you fill -- feel fulfilled Davies. As a Blues fan and supporter you

want to see a reaction tonight and players going and proving they are

not as everyone -- not as bad as everyone is making out.

We spoke of the hunger in the Ospreys side and there are two who

are the heartbeat of the side. Yes, you get a Welsh jersey and an Osprey

jersey 100%. It is hard to come back from the Six Nations. But this is

the character of the guides -- guys. They are taking this by the

The Blues come here under the cosh and pressure but the Ospreys are

more settled with home advantage. Would you say it is their victory?

happened within the Blues hasn't affected them and they can come away

They have got to think, we have got to get into the top six but pride

Gavin Evans who has signed a new contract to stay with the Blues.

A new contract signed by the Ospreys captain as well. Alun Wyn Jones will

be here at the liberty stadium. He is one of the big guns back for

the Ospreys after the Six Nations. Scott Baldwin starts. Rhys Webb back

is -- after an absence. Some big replacements to come off

the bench as well for the Ospreys. They are the ones who look to be

holding the aces at the start of this game. Dan Biggar making his

debut. For an all Welsh plus why not an all Welsh referee Nigel Owens?

The ring -- the rain has abated for the moment. Let us hope it stays

away. The Ospreys are looking to consolidate their place in the top

floor. The Blues looking to try and get away from the bottom two. The

Italians underneath them. Nobody claiming big kick off. The first

line-out of the evening and wrist Williams to throw in for the Blues.

-- Rhys Williams. It has been a nervous opening minute

for the Blues. It would be nice to have an exciting

game as I think the Pro 12 needs a shot in the arm. This is a good

take. Poor communication. It goes forwards.

And the race was won by Dan Fish. A bit of weight on it. Sam Davies is

a very good footballer. I am not sure in the fullback 's position.

You have a bit of pace to add to the attack. It is a great attacking

option. He is a great player but I would like to see him closer to the

action. A bit of space was created for Dan

Biggar. Hugh Bennett has just joined us. What is going on here? A

dominant scrum for the Ospreys. Lloyd Williams have to start

playing. He's been out injured. The summer tour and the World Cup. If

you scrum-halves have jumped ahead of him. It has been a difficult

season for him. Scott Baldwin looking to latch onto

Justin Tipuric there. That was very well played. A bit of

a respite now. Hopefully, a long, relieving kick for them which gives

them first field position of the evening.

Justin Tipuric and Scott Baldwin are two who are just breaking away.

I don't think the Blues would be too worried. There are a few back play

moves now but they seem to drift across field. Cuthbert has just got

to show him the outside. You're not going to get outside of the Blues

wingers. The Ospreys will have to engage that defensive line to hold

to them. More worrying for the Blues is the protection they are giving

away. Jones gifted that one. But that was lost by Dan Biggar.

Dan Biggar will not have been happy with that. Another mistake in the

line-out. Whose fault was that, because you hook is always get the

blame? It looked comfortable for the Blues

from the outset that time. It looks like it was a slip. Nigel showing

his intent and he will not have too many funny goings-on at the scrum.

Sometimes as a referee you are dammed if you do and dammed if you

don't. The Dane -- game can go on with too many scrums so you have to

make a decision. It looked like a slip but he just wants to get on

with it, doesn't he? Again, a missed line-out by the

Blues and a complaint that it wasn't a fair contest.

A bit of butter fingers from the Ospreys on a couple of occasions

this evening. It Ospreys on a couple of occasions

interesting to see that line-out again as I think there was a cheeky

push. There are plenty of defenders there. Ryan was just pushing at the

line-out. That could have been a penalty for the Cardiff Blues. Yes.

A chance to step up a gear. He had no option but to come inside. It is

there and available. No scrum half. Scott Baldwin doing the job. Slow

ball for Dan Biggar. Superb angle from Jonathan Spratt. That comes the

defence. Ashley Beck trying to get Justin Tipuric back on the angle.

Alun Wyn Jones to Rhys Webb. It should be this time and it is for

Ashley Beck. It has been nine minutes of pressure from the Ospreys

and that try had become. That is one thing you cannot afford to do. You

can't afford to give excision -- possession away. They had an

opportunity to clear it. Justin Tipuric takes it in. He makes easy

yardage. Another of load and that is the problem. The quicker the ball

from the faceplate and the off-load, that is an easy finish and a two-man

overlap. They were just drifting across. A great line from Jonathan

Spratt and that is what happens. A bit more resin on the hands to make

sure it sticks next time but Ashley Beck will be very happy with that.

Dan Biggar from the touchline with a lovely convergence. The Ospreys in

command in the first ten minutes. We said about running inside shoulders.

Stop it there. What he will do is hold that man which creates an

overlap out here. Simple. Steps inside, holds the man, three on one,

thank you very much and a great finish. It is so simple. You run the

inside shoulder so that the drift defence cannot move on to the 213.

Rhys Webb's kick has been charged down. Rhys Williams picks up. If

they can receipt -- recycle this quickly. Offside against the Ospreys

and advantage to the Blues. Gareth Davies tries to slide it through.

That is a free play. The Ospreys will be disappointed. They scored

seven points and give three away. They had too many members in that

ruck. A different balance of the ball could have led to try to the

Blues. It is very slow, I find it unusual that the ad said half does

not call for it because it is such a difficult kick for the scrum half.

Great pressure from Filo Paulo. Rhys Williams the hooker is down. Alun

Wyn Jones just having a word with the referee. When you have points on

the board, don't give away easy points straight afterwards. Just

about keeps it inside the post and Gareth Davies gives the Blues their

first points. It is a dog lead defence which is an easy run for the

man coming in that hole between the forwards. There is a natural gap

that opens up. You have to keep the defensive line straight. Taken by

Filo Paulo. Josh Navidi. He will have plenty of game time between now

and the end of the season with Sam Warburton out. Slow ball. Dan Fish

with a bit of enterprise. Sam Lewis trying to get over the ball. Enough

Blues bodies are there to prevent Lloyd Williams. That is straight

out. You cannot afford to do that. You have got desertion and an

opportunity to clear it and you put yourself under pressure and hand

possession to the Ospreys. Jonathan Spratt with the Emmy run. Jeff

Hassler does well to hold on to that. Dan Biggar gets into the 22.

Ryan Jones. Jeff Hassler is a good carrier. He is not the most subtle

player. Dan Baker has got his hands on the ball a few times in the

opening 15 minutes. Gethin Jenkins told to release it. Aisea Natoga has

kept it alive and he has scored. Two in quick succession for the Ospreys.

Lovely vision by Rhys Webb. Very good play. Not much on. Has a little

luck. That is good play by Aisea Natoga. A great finish. The Blues

will be very disappointed with that. It is giving that possession away

and putting yourself straight back under pressure. The Ospreys making

full use of it. It all came from the ball going out on the full. It is

all about the simple little things. If you do the simple things well you

are in the game. They just handed the Ospreys field position. That

skill by the scrum half and the winner. Dan Biggar succeeded from

the far touchline. Just pulled it slightly from the near touchline.

Just watch this. He just spots that the fullback is out of the way. It

is a deft little kick. Alex Cuthbert has to get back but Aisea Natoga

gets there before him. Aisea Natoga took a bit of time to find his feet

at the Ospreys but has looked better as the season has gone on. Dan Fish

looking for a chance to counterattack. Robin Copeland in

support. Tackled by Ashley Beck. The pressure continues on Lloyd

Williams. Taufa'ao Filise trying to get them out of a hole. Chris

Dicomidis gets them going in the right original. A good step. If the

off-load had gone a second earlier, Harry Robinson would have had a

chance. Robin Copeland. Gareth Davies. Gethin Jenkins. Filo Paulo.

Lloyd Williams takes the hit. A bit too clever from Josh Navidi. One

more pass and the Ospreys were away. It is still on. Half a dozen

turnover is the Blues have given away already. Aisea Natoga offers

the inside angle. Alex Cuthbert is having a tough night with Aisea

Natoga. Just nudged forward. He is quite a handful. He is coming off

his wing looking for the ball and looking for work. He has been a good

find for the Ospreys. You don't need to throw that pass because you have

had not hardly any possession of field possession -- position and you

need to build phases. Josh Navidi looking for the miracle ball and Sam

Lewis only to grateful to accept. That one spun round at a rate of

knots. The ball bounced back into the Ospreys pack. The Ospreys

trickled back into the pack. It was not a spin. The message being

relayed from skipper to front row. The conditions are pretty horrible

out there. That is a good strike from Gareth Davies. That is a lovely

strike. A very good kick. The Blues need all the points they can get at

the moment. Let's join grip steel. I am joined by the Ospreys back coach.

Two lovely tries but two penalties for the Blues. We have allowed them

back into it. We have conceded soft points in our half and we have had

to work for our tries. Is it when worry having too much possession?

Possession is a luxury but it's about how you use it. We have been

direct and that is with the tries have come from. From the kick-off,

you have to take that. It is a good kick by Dan Biggar but the winger

has to cover that. That is a schoolboy error really. The kick

safely from within the 22. That is a far better kick from Lloyd Williams.

A good clearing kick. We talked about what Alun Wyn Jones brings and

he is very vocal around the wrecks and is always on to his team. You

can see what he does but it is the things that he doesn't do which are

so important full -- the things you don't see which are so important.

They don't want to go to White to quickly in these conditions. They

use Jeff Hassler instead. Alun Wyn Jones carries it. Jonathan Spratt.

Dan Biggar. Keeping it alive. The forwards offering themselves. Ryan

Jones going in to help Justin Tipuric. Over the top she goes from

Rhys Webb. Dan Fish wanted to go dead and eventually the end smacked

out of play by Aisea Natoga. That is a lovely kick. His foot was in the

field of play. That should be a dropout 22. He has one foot in the

field of play and that should have been a scrum five. A good solid hit

by Rhys Williams. He keeps on coming, Jeff Hassler. He does not

mind the hits. Somebody should teach him how to sidestep! Here he comes,

on cue! Jeff Hassler is a pocket down you -- dynamo.

That was a massively high kick from Dan Biggar. That is a penalty.

Spratt went in there and a good decision from Nigel Owens. A clear

penalty. He didn't go for the ball. Ashley Beck was in acres of space so

disappointment for the crowd. Let us go back to fail. First time on Scrum

V Live for the Blues assistant coach. How confident are you if you

get some consistent ball you can make a dent? Every time we've had a

line-out we've given it back. A very nervous start from as so hopefully

we can start securing possession and maintaining it when we have it.

There is no shortage of commitment though? A soft try really. But we've

got to get a foot in the game, that is the big thing and maintaining

possession when we get it. Thanks for your time.

A close call for San Luis. But he is consistent. -- Sam Lewis. But he has

been consistent. You can't argue, because when he is shouting, release

release? You can't argue. It is such a close margin. Sam Lewis

thought he had done everything right. I am not sure he was the

tackler though. It is such a tough one to call. And that is what the

Blues want. Of the post from Gareth Davies. Chipping away and keeping

them in the game. It is a tough one. If he had lifted

his arm first he probably would have got away with it.

Brilliant to get away with the ball there.

They are just winning the Game nine battle at the moment. The initial

hit and then a drive for a couple of yards and it makes it difficult for

the Cardiff Blues defence. That is a lovely drive for Natoga.

That is not a fallback really. It is the second 58.

He is a stand-off. This is a turn-off and no one there. Great

skill. What a lovely pass. In and gone. Yes, great drive. Completely

sold down the river with the quick hands of Sam Davies and an easy

drive for Natoga. You talk about the issue of Wales and do they play with

a couple of seven s. With two on the field at the same time, it works.

The point Martin was making before the game, Ellis Jenkins hasn't been

in the game this evening so far and that is because the Ospreys are so

much on the front foot. As soon as Cuthbert comes in there,

he has got to take the man and ball. It doesn't happen. Overlap,

simple. If he stays out, you've got to communicate. If one goes in, you

all going. If not, you all stay out. The Ospreys are building nicely with

three tries in the first half-hour. An intelligent fish because --

kicked because he knew Dan Fish had to come from the opposite corner and

it is a good net gain for the Ospreys. Yes, and look where they I

again. It would be interesting to see the possession stats. That says

it all. The one thing the Blues have done is when they have come into the

Ospreys half, they have actually had some points. The Ospreys, if you cut

the points out, have had total domination.

Scott Baldwin disappointed himself in getting the timing wrong. What

the Ospreys did there, being clinical. When you have points on

the board, you make sure you secure the board -- all. They haven't

really kind of created. The first try was created by good skill by Dan

Biggar and off-loads. The second one was a kick that maybe Cuthbert

should have got. The chief is having a few words in the changing room at

half-time with the Blues. They are within the gain line and it makes it

easy for the guys to clear up. The more that goes on the more

confident they are. They can just win the Game nine battle and recycle

and have a look second time round. That was a fine kick.

The forwards now have to maximise it and put the pressure back on the

Ospreys. That came off Gethin Jenkins. The

rain absolutely hammers down at the moment. A bit dangerous now.

It is monsoon weather out there. They will do well to just hold it.

He opened up straight, saw the gap and nailed it.

A lovely, lovely strike. Outstanding kick. The Ospreys are very happy

with that. Hoping to get something from it.

There was leaning from Ryan Jones. They caught him this time. They

caught him this time. Innocence personified, isn't he? !

These are the days you don't really miss it. Lovely conditions. You

could hear Alun Wyn Jones earlier and now you can hear the rain on the

mike. It's coming from all different directions. Swirling wind and rain

pouring down. A lovely night to be playing rugby.

Sam Davies has the two wingers to content with. It was kept alive. And

now back for the initial penalty. An ironic chair from the crowd but he

had told them it was advantage anyway.

If he was offside. Baldwin made a bit of ground.

Ryan Jones got in on it and Rhys Webb has plenty of time to readjust.

A sloped events. That was a poor pass. Jeff Hassler is steaming

through. He needed that tackle. And a second one from Ellis Jenkin. Two

great tackles. Is that a penalty? Copeland, did he

try and gather it? What is going on? All kinds of things to be

answered. Play on, says Nigel Owens. He is getting flustered. Calm down,

Nigel! Calm down! What a passage of play that was. I still don't know

what's going on. Here we go. That would have been a harsh call.

He caught it on the palm of the hands rather than the fingertips,

didn't he? If I had been the captain I would have called for a penalty. A

good scrum, Blues. The Blues really need to marshal the

lines now for the last couple of minutes.

A chance for the Blues to attack from deep. Cory Allen dragged down

and not managing to get the ball in before.

It is good to see Cory Allen back on the field after that injury last

November. He has played well for the under 20s and on the sevens circuit

as well. He just needs to clear -- stay clear of injuries and get a run

of games. Dan Fish to Harry Robinson. Jonathan Spratt comes over

to tackle. Ellis Jenkins sets it up on the ten metre line. It is

difficult to handle the ball in these conditions. It was an offside.

It was a long advantage being played by Nigel Owens. This will be the

last play of the half. I think the Blues will be very happy. They are

17-9 down but are still in the game on the scoreboard. On the field,

they are not in the game because they have not threatened at all. A

lot to do in the second half. Alun Wyn Jones, are you happy with that

first half? Pretty good. A few knock-on is by the backs early on

but we have been clinical on the whole. Are you going for the bonus

point? We went through the phases and the tries came. If we hold onto

the ball, the tries will come. Enjoy your orange. Alun Wyn Jones in

positive mood. This is the story of the half.

The Ospreys looked confident from the off and Ashley Beck scoring the

first try. A good kick through from Rhys Webb for the first try of 24

Aisea Natoga. Allah Davies has scored nine points for the Blues. --

Gareth Davies. The statistics gives you some idea of the dominance of

the Ospreys. The Blues have stabilised things somewhat. The

Blues having to make twice as many tackles than their opponents and

they have missed nine of them. Alun Wyn Jones said he was relatively

happy. The Blues will be happy because they have been thoroughly

outplayed but are only eight points down. They have not been in the

game. The Ospreys are full of confidence and the Blues were like

rabbits in headlights. They did not know what to do. There was no

urgency of anger and it's really disappointing. The Ospreys have

blatant great rugby and deserved to be in front. The conditions are

pretty bad. Yes. The Ospreys are running straight and running hard.

Jeff Hassler and Jonathan Spratt started running straight and got

across the gain line and it made it easier for the Ospreys. It gives Dan

Biggar more options outside as well. The first try but the Ospreys by

Ashley Beck was scored early and some good off-loads in the build-up.

It was well worked. A couple of off-loads and it is so difficult for

a defence when you get these off-loads. Watch the footwork of

Jason Tippett. He keeps the ball above the ground. Alun Wyn Jones

with the off-load that makes the try. The Blues defence will be

disappointed. Dan Biggar fixes his man and puts Ashley Beck in the

corner. What is going on? Good off-loads from forwards. I don't

know, especially in these conditions. You think the ball is

going to ground and when those off-loads don't come off the coach

talks to you but when they come off they create tries. A good kick for

the second try. Alex Cuthbert exposed in defence. Alex Cuthbert

has had a tough first half. It is slow ball. The scrum half looks up

and it is the weight of the kick. Dan Fish is in a good position but

ten wanted this more. It is a great kick. Alex Cuthbert needs to kick

the ball into touch and it's great skill. It is a fantastic try. It was

not too long ago we were talking about the lack of firepower out wide

for the Ospreys but they seemed to have solved that now. Aisea Natoga

has been a great find and so has Jeff Hassler. They are doing nothing

complicated. They are running hard and keeping the ball. As long as

they keep the session and territory, more tries will come. You were

talking about the different styles of the two defences. The Ospreys

very quick up in the line and the Blues a bit confused about whether

they are blitzing or drifting. That led to the third try. One man is

doing one thing and another man is doing another. Cory Allen and Ellis

Jenkins are drifting. Alex Cuthbert steps in to take Sam Davies but it's

too slow and it's great skill by Sam Davies. They take and give and Aisea

Natoga is in. I am surprised at the Blues because when Dale McIntosh

came in a few months ago they were good in defence. But it is so

disjointed now. The passage of play when Jonathan Spratt came on early

on and the Blues were on their heels and it is so disjointed in defence

at the moment. You can hear the choir in the background. That is a

local school in the area. Some fine music here this evening at the

Liberty Stadium. There is plenty more sport coming your way on the

weekend. Phil Steele is already doing his bit

for Sport Relief down on the touchline. He looks in extreme

competition. We have got for televised games this week.

So a real feast of rugby for all you fans up there. -- out there. Let's

have a look at the table as things stand. The Ospreys are in fourth

race. Bars go just behind them and have two games on hand -- in hand.

That half of the table is becoming very close. The Ospreys lost in

Edinburgh a few weeks ago. They play Glasgow next week. It is very tight.

I would say the Ospreys are just going to squeeze in but it is a big

call for the Scarlets. They have to get into that European top six

spot. An interesting revelation this week and Warren Gatland seeing he

fancies a trial match ahead of the South Africa tour. Give us an idea,

is that something you would want to be involved in? It will be an

interesting match. It is very difficult because everybody knows

exactly what they are going to be doing and they know all the calls.

In terms of what you get from it, I am sure the supporters would like to

watch that game. All the established boys when they saw that in the week

would have dreaded it. But it's great for the younger players to

prove a point. It is a long break without a game time before playing

South Africa and we saw in the Six Nations some of the players went in

under cooked. It is not ideal but it looks the only option. Let's go back

down to Phil Steele. I am with a Swansea legend, David Rees. You used

to be on the Welsh selectors. What about resting players now for South

Africa? It is a bit of a conundrum. The Six Nations has not been a

particularly successful campaign. Did you rest people because a lot of

people like Alun Wyn Jones have paid a lot of rugby? But South Africa had

a good side and you don't want to experiment too much. You need

experienced players out there. You also need continuity towards the

World Cup. Being successful at it would give us a lift before the

World Cup. Warren Gatland has said about having a trial. You remember

the days of probables against possibles. What are your thoughts on

that? At least it would be on a sensible time. We used to have one

on New Year's Day! Warren Gatland says he wants to freshen things up.

It is a good psychological move because it puts people on their

toes. Nobody can take things were granted and I think it is a good

move. And what about this tonight? The Ospreys are playing well in

difficult conditions. The Blues are looking like a side lacking in

confidence. But they are still in the game. Thank you both. The

Ospreys are back on the pitch. We are privileged here on the programme

to have arguably the best referee in the world in Nigel Owens. This is

how the first half unfolded through his eyes. We can head back now to

Nigel Owens making his way back out. No changes to either side. The Blues

are still in the hunt, just about. The Ospreys are already hunting a

bonus point. Gareth Davies down to Dan Biggar.

No doubt the Blues will have been told not to give the way to much

possession. The statistics in -- at half-time incredibly in the favour

of the Ospreys. The Ospreys give it away at the start of the second

half. One thing they have to do is keep the ball. They have not had any

ball so they need to keep it when they have it. Ellis Jenkins with the

line at possession. Lloyd Williams. Filo Paulo. Again, the ball spills

out of the Blues' grasp. Justin Tipuric heavily involved. That is

another fine kick. Dan Fish is trying to settle

himself. Sam Davies steals the space in front of the tackler. He went

down the wrong channel there really. The other games kicked off later

than this one. That was not his best kick but it

was good yardage. Jenkins is the target in the

line-out again. Another turnover. There is a great

chance to go left. He straightened up there very well,

Sam Davies, but this -- but the pass went astray. It was on. The Blues

just cannot string together any phases of play. They haven't got any

ball-carriers whatsoever at the moment and they are not getting over

the gain line. 11 times the Blues have been turned over.

I've been hugely impressed by Sam Lewis tonight. Four or five

turnovers. They are dominating the Blues.

Dan Biggar just nursing them forward. Only four minutes gone but

I can't see the Blues getting back into this game because they are not

carrying the ball whatsoever and every time they are, they get it

turned over. We haven't seen Copeland tonight. He hasn't had the

ball in his hands at all and he is normally the GOTO ball-carrier.

Look how far back they take the ball in. They are not having any luck on

the gain line. They are taking it too deep. Even though it wasn't

turned over as such, a scrum gives them possession. The Ospreys are so

urgent, flying off the line and dominating the Blues. The Blues have

been very passive in defence. Gethin Jenkins up against Alan

Jarvis. Good delivery to Ashley Beck and, again, they get over the gain

line immediately. He tried to twist his way over. Has

he got the ball to ground and Rhys Webb says drive.

REFEREE: Any reason why I can't award the try?

We will have a look. Nigel Owens thinks is probably a try.

Try. That is the ball down, by the look of it.

Gavin Evans holds him up initially, turns him. If he's playing at the

normal speed, it's a try. Obviously, it looks slow there because it is in

slow motion. Play it at in all -- at normal speed. It is difficult to

find a reason not to award that. Yes.

Nigel definitely sees the ball going down, doesn't he?

There's no screen for Nigel Owens to make a decision, is there? I think

he's happy. There is no reason why you can't

award a try. Road REFEREE: That means I can award

a try? Yes. We got rid of all the double

negatives. The determination of Rhys Webb, despite the efforts of Gavin

Evans, and he manages to turn and get the ball to ground for that

extra point. We saw Rhodri Williams take over the

number nine shirt at the end of the Six Nations. Now Rhys Webb gets a
