Glasgow v Ospreys Scrum V Live

They are the champions. They are going to the Premier League.

Ospreys are the PRO12 champions. They know how to win. Tonight, they

need to win. Scrum V Live is coming from Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium for

the first time this season. It is the Warriors versus the Ospreys and

both are battling for a place in the play-offs. It is third against

fourth. Both sides evenly matched, 14 wins apiece. Glasgow's 5-point

cushion is down to a superior tally of bonus points. The Ospreys shocked

the Warriors earlier in the season. Revenge will almost certainly beyond

their minds in this most critical of fixtures. Hello, good evening and

welcome to Scrum V Live. As the season approaches a nail-biting

climax, joining me as Sean Holley and Jonathan Davies. Ospreys and

Glasgow tonight, if the Ospreys lose their chances of defending their

title look slim? I think so. They are capable of winning every game

and I am sure Glasgow, Leinster and Ulster were once the Ospreys out of

the play-offs but it is a big game for them tonight and if they can go

and win and get a bonus point, I think Glasgow will go through

because of the last game but it puts the pressure on the Scarlets.

a disappointing week for Scarlet -- Glasgow. Let's look at their team

home game, moving on with the Scarlets rumoured to be his

destination. After their disappointment against the Scarlets,

can you see them bouncing back at home tonight? Yes, they are a

quality side and they have made -- made home-grown a bit of a

thoughtless. It is difficult, turning off and turning back on.

Last week they were busily disappointed after running into a

good vein of form. Dash-macro bitterly disappointed. I felt they

should have done -- gone for the bonus because they did not go to the

races. If they can bring Stuart Hogg and Maitland into the game, they

the Ospreys, they will win tonight. Let's look at the Ospreys side and

with an injury. Tom Habberfield was picked to play on the wing but he is

injured. Ross Jones comes in. A lot of players playing out of position

for the Ospreys through the season. We have had some injuries on the

wings for the Ospreys. Do you think that could be a reason why there

isn't more breathing space between fields players. It has cost them in

finishing. Winners are traditionally born finishers. Seven games this

year the Ospreys have scored only three tries. The lack of the extra

bonus point has drawn them into this fourth-place dogfight, if you like.

I will show you some examples. I have had a look at some of the games

earlier in the season. A couple of games ago, Cain Fotuali'i, he is not

used to playing on the wing. The communication and understanding, he

does not choose to take people go on the inside. Matthew Morgan has no

options and it peters out. Last week was a classic example. Look at the

space. If we see the close-up of Ben John, he is not low enough. That is

only three or four metres to go, he would slide in. There is a touchline

beckoning as well. These inches really matter when it comes down to

the vital points in the season. We all know what happens after Ben gets

a try but it is the natural finishing ability that is so

important in winning games. There is a lack of pace and they recognise

that. Maybe they are going to play him on the wing, I don't know. If

you have got the front up front, when you do create the space then

you have to have the finish. Eli Walker has been a big blow for

them. Tonight, those boys have to finish. I spoke to Steve Tandy and

he mentioned Glasgow's proficiency, the blitzed defence and they come

quickly, interception tries, that is something the Ospreys need to guard

against. They did not do it against the Scarlets and I think they will

tonight. The pressure is on Glasgow. They are not used to this situation.

They have the Ospreys, next week they have to go to contact, the

pressure is on. I think it is easier because if they do their homework on

the Ospreys back line, they know there is no pace there so the blitz

defence might work tonight. Again, with the calibre of the front five,

they are going to take it to the Glasgow players. Briefly, analysts

think Steve Tandy mentioned, Glasgow have picked a heavy looking side,

with Dunbar and Morrison. There is no slouching with Spratt and Isaacs,

they are physical boys. The Ospreys have a huge pack. They want to be

confrontational. I remember a semi-final a couple of years ago, if

there is a team that can handle them it is the Ospreys. I am afraid there

is no red zone or ricochet but there is Welsh language commentary on the

red button. We can cross to the commentary team for the night,

players in particular, Graeme Morrison and John Barclay, because

they are playing their last home games for the team. Graeme Morrison

will retire after this season. John Barclay, as mentioned, he may be on

his way to the Scarlets. It is a beautiful evening in Glasgow and it

is amazing to have the warm coat resting on the barrier ahead of

others rather than tucked in with scarfs, gloves, everything else. It

really is a fabulous night and the sun will be in the Ospreys' eyes in

the first half. It will have disappeared by the time they turn

around. Glasgow taking full advantage of the elements. The pitch

is a bit bare in patches. It looks fairly firm initially, but having

walked behind earlier as well there are some fairly damp patches there.

It really does come to the business end of the season. It is third

against four. Glasgow, who are leading the way for so long just

slipped up recently and the Ospreys, as they can do so expertly, just

coming in on the rails. They know it is a three horse race. Glasgow,

Ospreys, Scarlets, battling for two places in the play-offs. Nobody can

afford to give ground and that is a great chase initially. Ross Jones, a

late replacement for Habberfield. He illness last week. Offside given.

Matawalu thought he was going to get an early present for a second. Good

thinking by Dan Biggar. At the pass gone, there was a chance of a long

break out. Definitely lazy rubbing emphasise the difference between the

two teams is the bonus point situation. Only four for the

Ospreys. Only the Dragons have fewer bonus points in the league, 11 for

Glasgow. Eight of those for scoring four tries. Picking up on the point

made in the studio, losing the likes of Shane Williams, there was a

wing. We heard about people filling in on the wing for the Ospreys. He

has done it fairly effectively for from the 22. The groan of

the taking and spurned. Absolutely. No excuse for the miss at this

because he spotted the loose ball. I wonder if the Ospreys hadn't

committed the earlier foul, whether that would have been yellow. I was

going to make that point. What a stickler the referee is for the

rules. A certain decision might come back to mind with people at home. A

professional foul as you called it their merits a yellow card. Pretty

innocuous, it was not a clean break, still pulled back off the ball.

wonder, because there was a bit of traffic there but there was open

space as well and if that had bounced kindly for Tipuric, you

would fancy him from 45 metres. A good line-up position for the

Ospreys. The -- the delivery was not straight. Delivery OK but the pass

back, forward. It is a good view of the throw. An easy take, just did

not get the lines right. King had to avoid the line-out prayers in order

to pick out Fotuali'i and maybe just straying slightly off centre. There

was very little in it. The first again. He had a tough time at

Murrayfield. Is it revenge time, or at the Scarlets game and they had a

fairly good evening against Glasgow for Glasgow, it is now Dan Biggar's

from Tom Isaacs. It is such a close call. John Barclay's right arm is

no we're -- nowhere near the ball. It is the one he would have wanted

in as he was rolling. Justin Tipuric has done wonders. Brilliant.

Absolutely incredible work. It is unbelievable to think that John

Barclay did not score from there. Open-side, they love to tackle. He

has made the tackle. And then he has had to call ball hunting to

stop the try being scored. A variation on a theme and

brilliantly done. That is wonderful, wonderful defensive work from

Justin Tipuric. It is still a dangerous position they have. They

are crowding the right-hand side. Nobody on the left for Glasgow.

Fullback, a lot of defending to be done. Away comes the ball for Niko

the try line. The ball is on its way back. It is a little fumble

from Tim Swinson that makes it up to the try-line. Niko Matawalu

again and the short ball. Great tackle by Jonathan Spratt but it is

not enough. This time, they have forced their way over and Ryan

Grant is the one that got there from short range. Tom Isaacs with

the tackle, he could not be much better than that. It was the bulk

of the prop against the size of the centre. He tries to hit him hard.

He gets over. And if you were wondering what the Glasgow team can

offer, the cut-and-thrust of a very potent back line and any grant and

the power up front. They can play it both ways. This is a game.

showing a number of ways which they are able to play this game. It has

threatening and very well organised and effective Glasgow defence.

Fotuali'i kicking ball away after 15 or 20 phases ordinarily would make

some gaps appear but quite easy for from Glasgow. The Ospreys not

getting any time to settle on the ball. Even though they were getting

numbers out wide every time, when it did not come to the breakdown they

were late -- they were making life very difficult for the Ospreys with

as few as they had in there. It is one s and two s but they are

structured, organised. This certainly wasn't the Glasgow we saw

got Strauss running into the Ospreys midfield and Biggar on that

occasion. It was a well-planned move. The second row through on the

inside pass. They come through with ball in hand on that occasion,

forcing the pass. It was Alex Dunbar who came back on the angle. That is

the strike runner, the one thing the Ospreys did not have in their

attack. Absolutely. Really hitting a flat ball with pace, in those

like to set a scrum that goes down. REFEREE:

If you collapse the scrum, we will get someone else on. Understood?

That is one thing you agree with Alain Rolland on, all these people

do not want to see collapsed scrums the Ospreys who will be penalised

again. If that was a warning and the next scrum is turned in and dropped

the scrum, you have to ask where is in. Certainly the angle of the

collapse suggests he was. Did he grant, telling him to work harder,

saying it was against three, Adam Jones, but Ryan Grant was not

helping the situation. He has got moment it left his boot but it was

going to the right of the posts. That is an important miss. Not a

good night so far with the boots for Duncan Weir. The Ospreys stay within

nine, as the half-hour mark the moment, 15-12, at home to

Ulster. Connacht is where Glasgow will be finishing their campaign in

was a rumble, this time his finishing off was a great

combination, they go the narrow side, bounces the first tackle and

keeps going, good strength. Then it is the snipe and that is the cheeky

offload as tight-head. In the mix, Moray Low, but Ryan Grant chose the

pace to get over. Lovely rugby from Glasgow. You can't knock it at all.

Three tries, all very different. Very good to watch. Some great

offloading. Ryan Grant has got two tries in 67 league games before this

and suddenly the Ospreys are facing tries down? Massively worrying, we

are passing in defence which is unlike us, giving away penalties and

poor turnovers. What about the Ospreys attack? You are not getting

much change from the Glasgow defence. It is making is erratic, we

have to get control and move them into an area to get better

possession for longer. Do you feel you can get back? Definitely, we

must get a foothold in the game and not let it get to frantic. Thank

you. Back to you, Gareth. There is going to be a bit of talking to do

when the interval comes. The Ospreys are hoping they can cut the deficit

in the remaining eight and a half minutes. Yes, they need something

and they need it quick. At the moment, the Ospreys' season is

quickly, the Glasgow defenders. Disrupting the flow from the

Ospreys. The Ospreys are looking a Fussell. Again, bodies in the way,

lazy defending, not making any effort to get out of the way. Happy

Glasgow know what they are doing. can see a couple of the Ospreys

impressed with Glasgow. Very impressed with what I have seen so

far. That is Adam Jones. He is not quite in control of the ball as he

defence has been pretty good. They have been quite physical in the

elements of Glasgow, cut-and-thrust in the midfield and then the close-

quarter stuff. Yes, I think it is exactly what we said. Passive

defences, the skills coach said that, that has been their problem.

They had the initial impact, the Glasgow players are getting over it

and then the support players are there. If we look at the first try,

they worked it well. What they do is they put it wide, they keep

going on the fringes first of all but then from this, watch, Duncan

Weir, he's takes it straight at Alun Wyn Jones and he isolates him.

But if that is not a forward pass, I do not know what is. That is

dubious. But great back-row play. And then this leads to the try. He

steps in because he no Niko Matawalu is dangerous. That

isolates Tom Isaacs on Ryan Grant and he cannot stop him. But I agree,

the statistics favour the Ospreys is but there is no creativity at

all and they are just soaking it up. As they did last week. They are not

committing to the rucks and mauls. Just getting across the field.

There is no creativity out wide. And no place out there. There is a

lot of frustration. The referee has not refereed the scrum area very

well. He has not been consistent in the tackle area. There is a lot of

frustration for the Ospreys because they are so far behind. But I think

you have to question the four passes, it get a bit like rugby

league, the assistant referees are there to call them. They are from

Scotland but they have to call them. It is wrong. Taking nothing away

from Glasgow, they thoroughly deserved their lead because they

attacking players they have. Maitland is. The short side is

vulnerable. If we look at Maitland, he has plenty of speed. This is a

great kick. They recognise that Richard Fussell is out of position

and has gas, a real finish. Then John is the blindside wing. He is on

the defensive line. You see Maitland trailing behind. They know he will

be left with forwards on the short side. Richard Fussell has to cover

on the short side because of the Blitz line. Glasgow know what they

are doing. He has too much to do. It is a great finish, well worked out.

It was evident in the first half that Glasgow, off the training

field, had worked out that Ospreys' blitz on the short side can be

vulnerable. You have to communicate. If you're blindside Uighur defending

in midfield, you have to give the attention to the left-hand side.

Fussell, Fussell has to move across to the left and put the open side

winger back for that kick. There is no communication. One goes back, one

goes across, one goes up. There is no communication. Fussell has had a

good season but he has shown a lack of game awareness there and

Maitland, the kick was brilliantly placed but you should never score a

kick from that distance with the fullback position. There was an

element of set play to that kick and there are other instances of that

tactic. You can see it as rehearsed practice. You have two forwards

inside, this is a 2-faced strategy. They get a gain-line, which they

should not. It is poor defence. They are trying to drag out the Ospreys

defence, which they do. Ian Evans should be looking on the inside. It

is therefore Maitland to switch back and come through. It is nearly

Glasgow getting through again. They have worked them out, looked at a

strategy to move their blitz defence and it has paid off. They are not

typed in the ruck area whatsoever and all credit to the Glasgow

coaches. That is where the holes are. Ryan Grant had a great Six

Nations but I'm not sure he is a terrific try scorer. He steps out of

the tackle. That is a forward pass again, a clear forward pass but

again, great support play, great offload and support by prop

forwards. That is miles forward once again but Morrison, a step, a flick

at the back door and props go again. They are taking their

opportunities, 34 passes but they are there. One thing, certainly a

different side from what turned to the Scarlets last week. They have

come to play and every opportunity they have had, they have scored.

They have bounced back. As usual on BBC Wales there is a feast of

sporting action for you to tuck to all weekend. Here's a hungry

under pressure, it looks as though the Ospreys are the least composed

of the two teams. Glasgow have grown. Their form over the season

has been excellent. It is a big team talk and therefore Steve and

Jonathan. They have to say, don't panic, don't try to throw the game

because they are dangerous on the counter. Get some points on the

might have enough just to jump them. They will have to do with the hard

way. Are they good enough to win it? We have talked about Glasgow.

They are ramp and fashionable team. But they have proved they deserve

to be there. They could go all the way. They have the physicality and

the confidence. Gregor Townsend has really instilled an attacking flair

in them this season. In knockout rugby, home advantage is huge and

it will all depend. You have to fancy Leinster to get a bonus point

on Sunday. And what we have said in previous seasons about the Scottish

regions, and the Scottish national side is the lack of creativity and

scoring tries. Glasgow have disproved that and also Scotland

have as well. Scotland scored a lot of tries this year. That has given

them confidence. The defence has been good and so has their set-

piece. With Ulster and Leinster, if they have home draws, then you

would fancy them to get to the final but Glasgow thoroughly

deserved to be there. And of course, they have a great opportunity,

especially with someone like Niko Matawalu pulling the strings for

them. A we have seen more creativity from the Scottish side's.

How much credit should Gregor Townsend take on that? A lot of

credit. They have quality overseas signings. When you make an overseas

signing, if they are quality and they add value, it makes a

difference to the squad. Every time Niko Matawalu has had the ball in

recent weeks, the entire team comes alive. If you are just some of the

local players around like Alastair Kellock, John Barclay, Ryan Grant

was outstanding tonight, it is a pretty good recipe. I think Niko
