this stadium. This is our cathedral of rugby. This Coliseum of

collisions, bone-crunching tacklesings breath-taking battles.

We are the champions of Europe, do not forget that. For you will feel

it in your heart, the fear, and the passion and that is what will drive

you. They are here. The roof is shut. It's just us and them. And

the night. Are you ready? It's Wales versus Samoa here at the

Millennium Stadium. The roof is shut, there's a steady drizzle for

most of the day in Cardiff. It is the second match of the Autumn

series, and given what happened here six days ago, the pressure is

most certainly on. Hello, good evening and welcome to Scrum V Live.

It is half an hour until kick-off and there is plenty to talk about.

I'm joined by former Wales internationals, Shane Howarth and

Ross Harries. First, let's remind ourselves how the last week

Outmuscled, outthought and outskorld, Wales welcomed the Pumas

to the Millennium Stadium and were given a mauling. Things won't get

easier, with a bone-crunching Samoans, up next.

They know how to beat Wales and they know how to do it in Cardiff..

The head coach is feeling the heat. Four defeats in a row and he's made

sweeping changes. It's crunch time. A big night for Justin Tipuric,

he's picked ahead of Sam Warburton, and Dan Biggar, Richard Hibbard is

on the front row. Mike Phillips back at nine in the starting line-

up and big match for Ryan Jones, 29th occasion as captain.

Supporters are arriving, they're expecting about 40,000, so over

half full at the Millennium Stadium. Jonathan and Shane are here as I

said. Jonathan, before we look at the team changes, let's talk about

last week, we have a week to reflect, hysteria in the press. Was

it the fact Wales was bad or Argentina were very good? Hysteria

is nothing new, but it is not a big surprise, losing Argentina. They've

been proved by their experience. The disappointing thing was the way

we played. And especially the way we came back in a second half. A

couple of offloads, and they were most imaginative side on the day.

They took their chances, and we didn't offer anything. I feel that,

again, we have brought ball koudge, no-one carried the ball, we didn't

bring our strike players in the game. And it was a very, very flat

performance. You can say all the excuses but the tackle area was

dominated by the argue tinance, after the experiences in the rugby

cheap and it will be the same today unless, they master that, it will

can't afford to play badly again. They'll know, they have to perform,

and have to win this game. OK, well, Phil is roaming the field this

evening. We'll start with last week, with

the defeat, how bad was it? I think it wasn't a fact we lost, but the

manner of defeat, not having game manner of defeat, not having game

line breaks. We've come to expect and this team expect more than that.

What about the fact Wales lost, as Rob Howley lost their leaders in

Jamie Roberts and Sam Warburton and Ryan Jones coming in as the new

captain, how much pressure is on him? I looked of there, and you'll

see Rhine, he is, I wouldn't say anybody is a natural leader, but

players have respect, and when he talks people will listen. If Wales

gets behind, someone has to get in there, get a voice and get them

back to the game plan and get them to win the game. You said about the

line breaks, no line breaks, new centre combination, what and how

will that work? Tonight is a big night for Jamie, and he has to

prove himself. You need the wingers, taking people away from them, they

can't expect Jamie and Ashley on their own. The humidity vait 91% in

the stadium. You may have seen Lee slipping over, he was wearing

demolishing Canada last weekend, they arrive in fine fetel. You know

what to expect when the pa risk island warriors come to town and

Wales are under no illusions. can match that physically, we need

to work them, and we need to be around the set-piece, we need to

challenge them, and that's what we're going to do. That's what a

red Jersey means and what it demands. There he is, Ryan Jones a

proud man, Wales' most experienced captain. He is described as Rob

Howley as the "faith err figure" as the squad. He reached many highs

and lows in Welsh rugby. We will Justin Tipuric has been one of the

Let's turn our attention to the visitors. Although they've had

memorable encounters, their arrival brings mystery and intrigue.

They're not as familiar a foe as Samoan to spread some Polynesian

wisdom. Greetings rugby universe, two things come to mind, seemingly,

indestructable with immeasurable power and beautiful singing voices.

These sons of the Pacific are the stars of the modern game. Fed on

fish, coconuts, corn beef and human flesh, Samoan rugby authorities

have created generations of rugby legends by sending them to New

Zealand. Rugby fans are seldom more entertained that when something

salty slaps down on and something Polynesian, unfortunately, the

Samoan game is based around the 3- Ds, discipline, defence and debacle,

but it takes subtlely, to hit a Samoan player it nearly kills him,

but subtlely for him to remain terrified for the next 89 minutes.

be on the receiving end of the tackles? It is tough, one thing you

should do is get rid of the play, is play it out, because, ball in

hand or not, they're going to hit you. And most people tend to tackle

low, the Samoans go for a body hit. Now, Phil reminded us of the '99

game, the defeat on this soil here, the World Cup in '99, the memories

still haunt you shape? Yeah. We did what we said for everyone not to do,

which is to take them on physically. We tried to take them on their own

game and they beat us at it. Not great memories. I lost more hair

and you went greyer after that day. Another thing worth mentioning is

the preparation time. When Samoa were last here, they lost by a

single score, it was a close game, they had three days to prepare.

They played Canada, in Colwyn Bay last week, that makes them a more

dangerous prospect? It seems with Samoa, because they're unknown

quantity, they come into a game not knowing themselves and that's what

plays better, they like to offload and go for the big hits. You can't

do on the field, it is unstructured and the more unstructured the game

the better it is for Samoa. The more structured the better it is

for Wales. Another survivor, but one from the winning side is

assistant coach, that's Pat Lamb? Welcome to Wales, Wales coming on

the back of four defeats and abject performance against Argentina, is

that an advantage or disadvantage to Samoa? Certainly disadvantage.

Argentina, did us no favours. Even though they had no defeats,

remember, they were playing Australia away, and still Grand

Slam chachyons, compared to what we play. We play at a different level.

We have 30 guise, playing from 30 different teams. The challenge is

to give them together and get them on the one page. When they come

together, there's a lot of heart, but that's the challenge, so no

favours from Argentina. We expect Samoa to be fast and hard and quite

loose at times, you are the technical adviser, does that mean

you're playing with structure? see Samoa getting developed, we saw

that in the World Cup, and professionalism allowed our players

to play at a high level all around the world, and you'll see that, in

the end of the game rugby is the old game, you have to win forward

and continuity and support, those areas that Samoa has been good at,

areas that Samoa has been good at, but we're getting better. There are

plenty of bad memories against Samoa but the last time Wales met

Samoa was a good memory, it was the World Cup a year ago, and one

moment of magic that separated the two sides. It was a tough encounter

two sides. It was a tough encounter and Wales made in excess of 140

tackles. But it was this moment of magic, Shane Williams who scored

the try, it was the difference between the two sides. Do you think

it will be the match tonight will be similar? Pat wasn't giving

anything away, but he is quietly confident. Wales' confident is not

the enormity of the occasion for the team and for Ryan himself. He

must have thought it would be a moment that would never happen.

until February to draw level with Evans on 28 times as captain, and

now the moment has come as the colour in the tunnel changes from

Rjan he has been a great person for rugby, and he will be crucial,

level-headedness, he does all the work. They have to keep it tight.

Perez. I don't think he was off his feet.

I don't think George North was off his feet there. He was trying to

give Halfpenny to fix the space there, that would be interesting.

Is North off his feet. He's off the ground maybe but... That's a little

going to get the outside of them, because they're using the touch

run the inside shoulder of the defender you're not going to hold

him, they're going to drift out and tackle the winger. Samoa and the

two sevens, battling. Tipuric, doing enough for Welsh Po

Taulafo, running on. They're not back within ten metres, once they

pick up the tempo. Hibbard, that's the way to keep the defence on it,

down the middle. Looking, they may have worked half an jove lap there,

a pass on the outside. That's ust. Hibbard again, good clearout.

That was nervey. If that slow ball, Biggar, should get back in the

pocket and go, right, put it in the air, and take, and put the pressure

on their full back not on ourselves. George, a little look in. It is

Just don't take it up, because it is bread and butter for these

Samoans, you have to change the way they play, put a pass in, run in

pairs, take the defenders off the you saw the Samoan try, the first

tackle is missed, once they get behind you, it is very, very

difficult to regroup and get Oh, it went against Wales in the

end, Jones detached himself too soon. Fotuali'i won that penalty

because the Welsh scrum was totally in control, and unfortunately Jones
