best? Great play from the full-back, what a try.

:00:27.:00:35.

When the curtain fell, two Welsh regions were left standing. The

:00:36.:00:43.

season is heading for an explosive climax.

:00:44.:00:46.

Good evening and welcome to Scrum V. It's been a record-breaking weekend

:00:47.:01:04.

the regional rugby. 70,000 fans in the principality Stadium, two

:01:05.:01:09.

cracking games of rugby and a hat full of tries. Please welcome Doctor

:01:10.:01:18.

Gwyn Jones. Mr Phil Davies. And a very special cameo appearance

:01:19.:01:24.

tonight from Doctor Jamie Roberts. We'll catch up with all the guys in

:01:25.:01:29.

a few moments, but first let's rewind 24 hours to act one of

:01:30.:01:34.

judging each -- Judgment Day, The Blues against the Ospreys.

:01:35.:01:38.

A place in Europe was at stake for both teams with the losers knowing

:01:39.:01:45.

they'd be out of the race. The Blues stuck with their policy of 37s in

:01:46.:01:50.

the back row and Summerhill was a late replacement on the wing after

:01:51.:01:56.

Tom James's wife gave birth to their first child. Rhys Webb retained the

:01:57.:02:02.

skippers are banned for the Ospreys. Three sixes were picked. King,

:02:03.:02:06.

Lydiate and Cracknell were all packing down in the back row.

:02:07.:02:16.

Picked up by King. And scored by James King! Straight from the back

:02:17.:02:28.

of the scrum. That is exactly what the Ospreys wanted. They've had all

:02:29.:02:34.

the pressure early on. He refused to go fig goal, but from that scrum,

:02:35.:02:38.

James King gets the first try of the afternoon.

:02:39.:02:44.

Matthew Rees to Dan Fish. Isaacs. A big gap for him. He's through the

:02:45.:02:52.

gap. He has support either side, but takes the hit from Dan Evans. Good

:02:53.:02:57.

hands by Ellis Jenkins because that was fired back at him. Had Isaacs

:02:58.:03:02.

linked up, there could have been danger. Rey Lee-Lo! The tap just

:03:03.:03:09.

stopped him. Daryn Smit tries to keep it alive. The Blues so, so

:03:10.:03:21.

close, but couldn't finish. Pressure is still back on the Ospreys. The

:03:22.:03:27.

defence is scrambling to get into position. Navidi charges forward.

:03:28.:03:33.

Not held so he goes again. No full-back sweeping because

:03:34.:03:38.

defensively Dan Evans has been left short. There is no one at home for

:03:39.:03:42.

the little grubber if they look at it. They have a free play further

:03:43.:03:46.

penalty as well. Earlier they worked! And skim straight over the

:03:47.:03:54.

whole of the Ospreys defence. -- and skim. The Blues get their first try

:03:55.:04:00.

and they strike immediately. You could see James King trying to get

:04:01.:04:04.

the position and everything disintegrated in front of him. A

:04:05.:04:09.

pass for Jarvis almost puts him over. Right on The Blues try line.

:04:10.:04:14.

Great ball to Dirksen, who has the strength to make the corner.

:04:15.:04:24.

Watkin slips the tackle. Still going. Dragged down by Anscombe.

:04:25.:04:37.

Look at the numbers left, it has to go quick. A little chip. Awkward

:04:38.:04:47.

bounce the Tom Isaacs! Watkin... He's given Dirksen another present.

:04:48.:04:58.

Fish. Great off-load. Williams. Could be on. Navidi still going.

:04:59.:05:10.

Navidi! All the way, Josh Navidi! Slides over the try line. In a

:05:11.:05:15.

seesaw game, The Blues are back in front. Blues try line in the

:05:16.:05:26.

background. The Ospreys are looking for a bonus point try. Advantage

:05:27.:05:34.

them as well. Web to Underhill. Underhill! The Ospreys have got a

:05:35.:05:36.

bonus point. You knew exactly what you were

:05:37.:05:58.

doing. Why on earth would you do that? It's opened up with loads of

:05:59.:06:05.

rugby in the second, but the stakes are playing their part as well. That

:06:06.:06:10.

mistake from the Ospreys has given the lead back to The Blues. Here it

:06:11.:06:18.

is for Biggar. Straight out to Dirksen, looking for a hat-trick in

:06:19.:06:24.

the corner. No, just held short. So, so close. Webb tries to sneak over

:06:25.:06:33.

in the corner. He thinks he may have got there. They will have to have a

:06:34.:06:39.

look at it. Has Rhys Webb kept Osprey hopes alive? He goes. Try.

:06:40.:06:54.

Web picks the ball up and Rhys Webb makes that salute Leasure that the

:06:55.:07:02.

season for the opt Ospreys those down to the last Saturday. --

:07:03.:07:07.

absolutely sure. We needed to score five tries to get into the top six.

:07:08.:07:12.

We'll was had the belief we would score five and a win. We came out

:07:13.:07:18.

firing in the second half. I thought we played some good rugby, we

:07:19.:07:22.

controlled the contact area for the majority of the game and got a lot

:07:23.:07:27.

from that area. If you scored 27 points, you should win. Before we

:07:28.:07:32.

get stuck into the game, a quick welcome to Jamie. You've played in

:07:33.:07:36.

some of these big games at Twickenham with over 70,000. Great

:07:37.:07:42.

day yesterday. How do you think that compared? A fantastic day, first and

:07:43.:07:47.

foremost, for the Welsh regions and all the fans. 68,000 people. Just

:07:48.:07:53.

jealous! I would have loved to have played. The rugby was awesome. All

:07:54.:08:01.

four teams playing with intent. Blues against Ospreys, two team is

:08:02.:08:05.

hell-bent on scoring tries. The Ospreys took the spoils. A humdinger

:08:06.:08:11.

of a second half, it went back and forth. The Ospreys got the win and

:08:12.:08:14.

the bonus point so their European hopes are still there, hanging by a

:08:15.:08:19.

thread. From The Blues perspective, will they be kicking themselves

:08:20.:08:23.

after surrendering a ten point lead? They will be. For parts of the game

:08:24.:08:28.

they looked in control so they'll be disappointed. They seemed to have

:08:29.:08:40.

turned a corner from the start of the season and they had some

:08:41.:08:42.

momentum, but they came up against a good, determined side with very good

:08:43.:08:44.

players. They are showing what they can do now. It was typical Ospreys.

:08:45.:08:47.

Ten points behind and it looked like they would lose, but they are the

:08:48.:08:50.

most bloody-minded of all the teams in this league and they never roll

:08:51.:08:55.

over, even when the chips are down. They don't, they were excellent.

:08:56.:08:59.

Before their game there was a lot made of The Blues, the 37s. Navidi,

:09:00.:09:07.

Ellis Jenkins and Sam Warburton. Early on, the three sevens are

:09:08.:09:15.

together. They get a penalty from Nigel Owens. They were good all

:09:16.:09:19.

afternoon. But the Ospreys were clinical at the breakdown. Jenkins

:09:20.:09:26.

just about to go into the tackle. Lydiate and Nicky Smith clear the

:09:27.:09:29.

tackle and produce quick ball for web. They did this all afternoon.

:09:30.:09:35.

They got into the Blues 22 and they were clinical. A good drive in play

:09:36.:09:40.

through the middle. They sucked all the Blues forward around that area.

:09:41.:09:46.

Adam Beard was earlier targeted. He's back on his feet and he sees

:09:47.:09:51.

the mismatch. He goes at Tom Williams. He carries out, which

:09:52.:09:56.

makes it harder for Ellis Jenkins to make the tackle. You can see

:09:57.:10:00.

Underhill coming around. Tom Williams has to tackle the big

:10:01.:10:05.

forward again. Webb season coming around the corner and bang. A great

:10:06.:10:10.

score. They did that in the last 15 minutes and they were very clinical

:10:11.:10:15.

in The Blues 22. They were creating mismatches, they know what they were

:10:16.:10:18.

doing and they took their opportunities. I think playing in

:10:19.:10:26.

the back row is a good thing. It's becoming a trend. Hooper and Pocock,

:10:27.:10:31.

World Cup, created problems. The Scarlets have been playing Barkley

:10:32.:10:36.

and John Davies. We have three number sevens in the back row with

:10:37.:10:40.

The Blues and it causes trouble. I wasn't a big fan of it initially,

:10:41.:10:44.

but at the beginning of the end of the season, the pitches are dry, the

:10:45.:10:50.

rugby is faster, more recycling and more tackle areas. They are having

:10:51.:10:55.

a". It's causing teams headaches. The Blues destroyed the Scarlets a

:10:56.:11:00.

few weeks ago doing that. The Ospreys are probably the best team

:11:01.:11:03.

in contact in Wales, but they struggled against the three sevens

:11:04.:11:07.

and struggled when Warburton went off. We have to consider how that

:11:08.:11:11.

changes in the future and also the applications it has on whether you

:11:12.:11:15.

pick another six and what the job of the mother six is. It's a good

:11:16.:11:20.

point. The Ospreys have obviously thought about it. They were a hell

:11:21.:11:26.

of a threat in this game. What the Ospreys did well, their first

:11:27.:11:29.

support play to the ball-carrier, his job was to get rid of the

:11:30.:11:32.

tackler and that's what you saw them Lydiate doing with Warburton. The

:11:33.:11:38.

job of the second player was to secure the ball, which Nicky Smith

:11:39.:11:42.

did well against Gethin Jenkins. With The Blues, you haven't got

:11:43.:11:50.

three tacklers. You've got four. The Ospreys had thought it through and

:11:51.:11:54.

they did a reasonably good job. The point about Warburton was crucial.

:11:55.:11:59.

In the last 15, he's brilliant at sniffing out the key turnovers in

:12:00.:12:04.

tight situations. Stepping out turnovers. Sniffing up tries, Rhys

:12:05.:12:09.

Webb, no better player. He's arguably a better player after

:12:10.:12:13.

injury than ever was. He's fantastic. There's a clip which

:12:14.:12:19.

shows him manipulating Defendi is. He's as good as Will Genia was in

:12:20.:12:25.

his prime. He gets the Ospreys over the gain line. Dirksen, he sets

:12:26.:12:32.

Tommy Isaacs down. Look at this. Sam Davies does a brilliant job. Talking

:12:33.:12:35.

about creating space for your friends. He's holding Tommy Isaacs

:12:36.:12:41.

back. Webb identifies this and sneaks over in the corner. A cheeky

:12:42.:12:48.

five points. That was arguably the crucial score. Creating space for

:12:49.:12:55.

your friends, a euphemism! I think The Blues contained Rhys Webb for

:12:56.:12:59.

about 60 to 65 minutes and in the last quarter of an hour his glass

:13:00.:13:04.

showed. Around the rucks, he's very good at minute collating defenders.

:13:05.:13:12.

-- manipulating. When you have a few players manipulating that channel,

:13:13.:13:16.

it's very difficult to defend and the Ospreys obviously worked on that

:13:17.:13:20.

and saw it as a weakness. Blues against Ospreys were sacked one of

:13:21.:13:24.

Judgment Day. Act two was Dragons against Scarlets.

:13:25.:13:30.

The Dragons had nothing but pride to play for, but arrived in positive

:13:31.:13:36.

mood after their strong showing against Montpellier. Langman was

:13:37.:13:40.

making his 50th appearance for the region. Davies and O'Brien lined up

:13:41.:13:46.

at half-backs. The Scarlets new win was vital to keep their semifinal

:13:47.:13:50.

hopes alive. They were boosted by the return of vice captain Scott

:13:51.:13:54.

Williams, who made his first appearance all season for the

:13:55.:13:58.

region. Liam Williams switched to the wing to accommodate Michael

:13:59.:14:00.

Collins at full-back. Off the top, good hands by Davies.

:14:01.:14:14.

Support from Samson Lee. Down the blindside. Very good pass from

:14:15.:14:21.

Davies to Evans. Still they go. Card is down in the middle, he looks

:14:22.:14:29.

unsteady on his feet. Williams off-loads. A little step inside. He

:14:30.:14:36.

will go over for the try! What a welcome return for the man. Back

:14:37.:14:40.

from injury. Dream start for the centre. This is the past. No one has

:14:41.:14:50.

to check stride. The return ball from the full-back, great support

:14:51.:14:51.

from Scott Williams. Davies. Short ball. Still going.

:14:52.:15:11.

Dragons fly out. Langman makes the tackle. Shingler steps inside. He's

:15:12.:15:21.

over! The referee was right on the spot and the rangy outside-half used

:15:22.:15:24.

all his height and got over underneath the sticks. Great ball!

:15:25.:15:35.

Parks into a little bit of space. Flicks the ball over the top. A

:15:36.:15:40.

break by Collins, insightful Williams. They really heart having a

:15:41.:15:44.

field day, the three quarters line for the Scarlets. Samson Lee takes

:15:45.:15:53.

it on. It's on. Davies, he'll go himself, surely. Almost an off-load

:15:54.:15:57.

from Davies, using all his sevens skills. Couldn't quite get the ball

:15:58.:16:01.

to Steph Evans. That was an opportunity gone begging. You have

:16:02.:16:06.

to say it was a good cover tackle from Charlie Davies.

:16:07.:16:16.

Great work from Langman and Fowler towel following up. An

:16:17.:16:24.

opportunity... Talk about an individual try. That came from the

:16:25.:16:28.

hard work of the second row, Ryan Langman. 50th game for the Dragons

:16:29.:16:33.

today. A great opportunist try by the Dragons, digs at the what they

:16:34.:16:39.

needed to get back into this game. Fallow tower at the back will push

:16:40.:16:44.

that across to Davies and finds Hughes. Joe Bryan. Warren. Tackled

:16:45.:16:51.

by the opening try scorer, Scott Williams. An opportunity now...

:16:52.:16:58.

Couldn't get the ball inside. Rate attack from the Dragons. -- great

:16:59.:17:03.

attack. Talk about getting two passes in.

:17:04.:17:16.

That could have worked with Scott Williams. Players outside, what does

:17:17.:17:22.

he do? Off-loads. It will be Evans who will go over early doors in the

:17:23.:17:26.

second half. Scott Williams scored himself in the first half, this time

:17:27.:17:32.

he's the provider. The simplest of passes to his left winger.

:17:33.:17:38.

A little dummy from the scrum-half. Well marshalled by Evans. Knock-on,

:17:39.:17:47.

advantage blade. Can the Scarlets clear this? Players are racing back

:17:48.:17:53.

to get into position. Shingler hacks the ball downfield. Only goes as far

:17:54.:17:58.

as Carl Meyer. He will run it, a long way to go. Great play from the

:17:59.:18:07.

full-back! Over the line! What a try! Great play from Carl Meyer.

:18:08.:18:13.

He's got on the outside and caused the winger to step in. Shows his

:18:14.:18:15.

power from five metres out. Barclay pulls it back behind to

:18:16.:18:26.

Evans. A mismatch. Can Evans get through? Good tackle coming across.

:18:27.:18:31.

Scarlets close to the line. Plenty of support. Thomas comes in. Davies

:18:32.:18:38.

waits. Barclay close, spins. Excellent tackle from Warren. They

:18:39.:18:46.

go again. He's over! Just to keep the pressure on, Gareth Davies, who

:18:47.:18:50.

hasn't been on that long, but knows his way to the try line. Very happy.

:18:51.:18:57.

We achieved a couple of goals we set for ourselves this season.

:18:58.:19:01.

Qualifying for Europe was a big one. It's good to get that off our backs

:19:02.:19:06.

with the game to go. When we went 14 points down our response was

:19:07.:19:09.

fabulous and we came back into the game. The same at the death, we came

:19:10.:19:15.

into it, but we've come away with nothing again. The losing habit has

:19:16.:19:20.

to change. A handsome victory for the Scarlets which has confirmed

:19:21.:19:22.

their place in next season's Champions Cup. What does it tell us

:19:23.:19:28.

about the character of the Scarlets to come back from those two soul

:19:29.:19:33.

destroying defeats against Glasgow and The Blues and do what they did

:19:34.:19:38.

yesterday? It's been an up and down season for them. They've been good

:19:39.:19:42.

during the World Cup and the Six Nations. They've had bad lows in

:19:43.:19:46.

between. They showed some determination that they didn't want

:19:47.:19:49.

to finish the season like that. It would have been terrible to go into

:19:50.:19:53.

freefall and lose out on everything if they had played badly again. Good

:19:54.:19:58.

that they are back. It's important that we have representation in

:19:59.:20:02.

Europe and they still have a chance of top four. I want to talk about

:20:03.:20:07.

Scott Williams. We've talked about this -- Rhys Webb. Williams making

:20:08.:20:13.

his first start since the World Cup in September. He looked like he'd

:20:14.:20:16.

never been away. Fantastic performance. Cruciate knee ligament

:20:17.:20:21.

injury is difficult to come back from. Making one of his trademark

:20:22.:20:29.

breaks on the outside. This is a 21. Fantastic at executing that. -- two

:20:30.:20:39.

on one. To do that after seven months out was pretty impressive.

:20:40.:20:44.

Great to see Jack Dirksen back as well. He's been out for a while.

:20:45.:20:49.

We'll talk about New Zealand and a bit. With that New Zealand tour

:20:50.:20:52.

coming up, so great you have guys coming in through our fresh and

:20:53.:20:56.

haven't had a season of being battered in domestic opticians and

:20:57.:21:00.

have come into it fresher? Certainly. Leigh Halfpenny as well

:21:01.:21:06.

has been injured. He's had a setback with his injury. Somebody like

:21:07.:21:10.

Scott, he's had seven months of pre-season! He'll be going into the

:21:11.:21:14.

last few weeks fresh. It's great for the Scarlets stab someone like that

:21:15.:21:21.

back as well. Especially with what was on the line yesterday.

:21:22.:21:23.

Conversely, Scarlets looking for a semifinal, the Dragons consigned to

:21:24.:21:28.

the lowest place Welsh region, 10th in the table, just four wins all

:21:29.:21:32.

season. What needs to change for them to become contenders? Pretty

:21:33.:21:37.

stark reading. 26 points behind The Blues. People have been, rightly

:21:38.:21:43.

perhaps, questioning the value of the Italian teams in the league. The

:21:44.:21:48.

Dragons have won the same number of games as zebra. Over the last 11

:21:49.:21:52.

seasons they've been the bottom Welsh team. Unless something

:21:53.:21:58.

changes, this cycle of existing from hand to mouth and reproducing the

:21:59.:22:01.

same cycle each year, something will have to change. They are obviously

:22:02.:22:06.

looking for a benefactor to come in, but at the moment no one is in

:22:07.:22:12.

sight. Whether they change their philosophy and become more of a

:22:13.:22:18.

development region. They are losing 18 games per season in the Pro12 so

:22:19.:22:22.

why don't they change their philosophy and become like a

:22:23.:22:25.

Connacht model? Bring players through, take the under 20 stars,

:22:26.:22:30.

give them an avenue to play rather than sitting on the bench in other

:22:31.:22:34.

regions. Look at Connacht. They are the model. They are doing well in

:22:35.:22:40.

the top four. The other thing is, do they need to become more regional in

:22:41.:22:45.

their outlook? Incorporate other clubs. It's the biggest regional

:22:46.:22:51.

area. Something has to change otherwise it will continue. I think

:22:52.:22:57.

it would be bad -- it wouldn't be bad to be more developmental. We'll

:22:58.:23:03.

get views from the fans in a moment. You've been a coach of two of the

:23:04.:23:09.

regions. You know this regional game inside out. Has he got a point or

:23:10.:23:14.

would that lead to the kind of dwindling insignificance of Welsh

:23:15.:23:18.

rugby in the wider Pro12? They are good points because this to

:23:19.:23:22.

statistics bear out what he's saying. It's trying to strengthen

:23:23.:23:28.

our playing numbers and in that we need four strong regions. With the

:23:29.:23:34.

Dragons, for me, it is a bit about continuity. Do they look for a

:23:35.:23:39.

broader identity? Gwent has already produced fantastic rugby players. We

:23:40.:23:44.

mentioned the under 20s. When we coach them, the first squad we

:23:45.:23:50.

picked, 54% were from the Dragons region. James Thomas was at the

:23:51.:23:58.

forefront of that group. It's just consistency, continuity and giving

:23:59.:24:02.

them an opportunity to grow and to become stronger. They need a

:24:03.:24:07.

stronger squad, they have an amazing spine of young players. Dixon,

:24:08.:24:11.

Morgan. They have a really good spine of players and it's about

:24:12.:24:18.

trying to grow and support them. It's not long ago we were talking

:24:19.:24:25.

about Connacht being poor and look how successful they've been. I don't

:24:26.:24:30.

think the Dragons are fall off. Connacht have had more investment

:24:31.:24:34.

from Irish would-be union. As it surprised you, as someone who used

:24:35.:24:39.

regularly play against Connacht, how much they've transformed themselves

:24:40.:24:44.

recently? Yeah, but you have a core of younger players. We talk about

:24:45.:24:50.

Jack Dixon and Tyler Morgan... There are some quality youngsters and you

:24:51.:24:54.

just have to give them time. It'll maybe take a couple of years, but

:24:55.:24:58.

these guys will go on to be leaders and people will follow them.

:24:59.:25:03.

Connacht, you look at their younger players, and they've stepped up and

:25:04.:25:04.

delivered this season. Final four? Unless something

:25:05.:25:14.

changes, the Dragons will be the poor relations. They are spending

:25:15.:25:18.

the whole play a budget on their players, and they are scratching

:25:19.:25:21.

their heads why that is not happening. You complain about the

:25:22.:25:23.

standard of players but you don't spend the money on your budget.

:25:24.:25:27.

Unless that changes, they will stay as they are. Of course we want the

:25:28.:25:30.

four strong regions but we haven't got them and we haven't for some

:25:31.:25:35.

time. Let's make some changes to get four regions in the future, and

:25:36.:25:40.

let's be perfectly honest, there are some journeymen in that side who are

:25:41.:25:44.

not Welsh who are contributing very little to the future of Welsh rugby.

:25:45.:25:49.

OK, we always come to Scrum V for strong opinions. Let's have a word

:25:50.:25:53.

with some of the fans. Just under 70,000 in the stadium yesterday and

:25:54.:25:57.

we have a few in the bar with us. Some controversial thoughts there.

:25:58.:26:08.

What is your take? Just that that basically the Dragons played good

:26:09.:26:18.

rugby at times and I just think they need to work better on their kicking

:26:19.:26:24.

game and closing out the game as well. Would you still go and see

:26:25.:26:29.

them if they were a development region? I definitely would, but I

:26:30.:26:32.

don't think a lot of fans would be keen on the development side of it.

:26:33.:26:37.

A die-hard fan there. A Blues fan, and a mixed bag of this season, poor

:26:38.:26:42.

start but then you had all the Irish regions away while the World Cup was

:26:43.:26:45.

on and a better end to the season although you didn't make it into the

:26:46.:26:49.

Champions Cup. As the glove Haas MD or fault? Half empty. We had a lot

:26:50.:26:56.

of hard work -- is the glass half empty or fall? Hoping for a good

:26:57.:27:01.

finish next week in Edinburgh and have a good finish. Positive signs

:27:02.:27:06.

and positive roots. Let's speak to an Ospreys fans, and we said they

:27:07.:27:09.

were the bloody-minded region, and they got through the last challenge

:27:10.:27:13.

yesterday and they've never not been in the Champions Cup before. Fancy

:27:14.:27:16.

your chances against Ulster? Of course. We are desperate to win,

:27:17.:27:22.

aren't we? With a bit of luck we will go out and win a bonus point

:27:23.:27:27.

and we will have the five points and hopefully the Scarlets can win

:27:28.:27:30.

against Munster and deny them the bonus point and we will be there. An

:27:31.:27:35.

intriguing situation you've just described. You, my friend, will be

:27:36.:27:39.

supporting the Ospreys next week and vice versa? It's going to be

:27:40.:27:46.

difficult. Needs must. It's going to be tough for us going to Munster to

:27:47.:27:50.

try and win there, but if the Ospreys can do as a favour and we

:27:51.:27:55.

can win out there, who knows? Who'd have thought Ospreys and Scarlets

:27:56.:27:59.

sitting together and supporting each other in the Pro12. We have done all

:28:00.:28:03.

the maths on the permutations and this is the Pro12 round-up.

:28:04.:28:08.

It was a record making -- record-breaking night when Glasgow

:28:09.:28:15.

running ten tries. One of ten players leaving the club scored a

:28:16.:28:23.

hat-trick. Another lever clinched a first-half try bonus point and

:28:24.:28:27.

Glasgow have now won nine league games on the trot and secured their

:28:28.:28:32.

fifth successive semifinal spice. It was also ten out of ten for Duncan

:28:33.:28:36.

Weir who converted all of the tries, including his own. He moves to

:28:37.:28:43.

Edinburgh next season. Edinburgh took an early lead as Jason Toney

:28:44.:28:50.

scored 16 of their sides points, including his only try of the game.

:28:51.:28:54.

But Simon zy both finished off the move of the match as he crossed for

:28:55.:28:59.

Munster. Edinburgh kept the pressure on the Irish before a late score

:29:00.:29:04.

secured the try bonus point and took Munster into the Champions Cup

:29:05.:29:05.

places above Edinburgh. The shock of the night came in

:29:06.:29:16.

Treviso where Connacht needed just a point to ensure a play-off place in

:29:17.:29:19.

the first time and they soon will run up 14 unanswered points. But two

:29:20.:29:24.

quickfire tries from Treviso brought the game to life before Jayden

:29:25.:29:28.

Hayward's winner put them in the Euro spot.

:29:29.:29:43.

Ulster dominated this all Irish affair. A penalty try in the first

:29:44.:29:48.

half gave them a narrow lead before Jared Payne crossed early in the

:29:49.:29:53.

second half. The game was made safe when Paddy Jackson intercepted and

:29:54.:29:57.

ran 80 metres, but they couldn't get the try bonus point that might be

:29:58.:30:01.

crucial. The wind does guarantee Ulster European Championship places

:30:02.:30:07.

ahead of the final game against the Ospreys next weekend. So it is all

:30:08.:30:12.

over for the Blues on the Dragons. They have nothing to play for, but

:30:13.:30:17.

every other team does on the last weekend fixtures. So this is what it

:30:18.:30:21.

all. Glasgow travel to Connacht with the winner guaranteed a home

:30:22.:30:26.

semifinal play-off. A win for Leinster over Treviso would probably

:30:27.:30:30.

give them a home semifinal. The two Italian sides are still fighting it

:30:31.:30:34.

out for their one Champions Cup final, and Edinburgh need a bonus

:30:35.:30:37.

point win over the Blues and hope that the Scarlets beat Munster by a

:30:38.:30:42.

big score to reach the top six. The two West Wales regions will be in

:30:43.:30:46.

the unusual position cheering for each other next week. The Scarlets

:30:47.:30:49.

are away to Munster are looking for a top four finish to reach the

:30:50.:30:53.

play-offs. Two bonus points could be enough for the Welsh region of the

:30:54.:30:57.

Ospreys do them a favour by beating fourth-place Ulster. While the

:30:58.:31:00.

Ospreys need a win over Ulster as they chase a Champions Cup place and

:31:01.:31:04.

hope that the Scarlets beat Munster and preferably deny them a bonus

:31:05.:31:10.

point. That is about as simple as we could make it, and Gwyn and I tried

:31:11.:31:14.

to do the other permutations and gave ourselves a headache. We won't

:31:15.:31:17.

get bogged down other than to say that the Scarlets and Ospreys still

:31:18.:31:21.

have prizes on offer but their destiny is in either of their hands.

:31:22.:31:25.

They are relying on results from elsewhere. All the Scarlets can do

:31:26.:31:28.

is go away to Munster and win. No mean feat. And hope the Ospreys do

:31:29.:31:34.

them a favour. Can they do it? Of course, they can. A magnificent

:31:35.:31:37.

winner probably their best performance of the season away at

:31:38.:31:40.

Ulster earlier this year so they can do it. It will be tricky. They are

:31:41.:31:44.

in Europe and there will be some tough games in the top four and

:31:45.:31:48.

there is more in the balance for Munster and their tradition. They

:31:49.:31:53.

might get something out of it and I don't know if they will win it but

:31:54.:31:56.

they will give it everything. You've been there many times, very

:31:57.:32:02.

vociferous home crowd, the cliched 16th man but they are not quite the

:32:03.:32:06.

force they were in recent years. Are they there for the taking? I think

:32:07.:32:10.

so. The Scarlets have got quality and I think they showed at the

:32:11.:32:13.

weekend when they get the attacking game right they are a formidable

:32:14.:32:17.

team. No doubt about that. I think they can go in with confidence. They

:32:18.:32:20.

know what they have to do, go out there and impose their attacking

:32:21.:32:24.

game. Munster have not been the team of previous years and this is a

:32:25.:32:28.

great chance for them. Interesting they will be cheering on the Ospreys

:32:29.:32:32.

and vice versa. Bizarre, utterly bizarre. Phil, a losing bonus point

:32:33.:32:37.

could be enough depending on the results but the Scarlets, and we

:32:38.:32:40.

have number crunched this, they've scored more tries in the opening 20

:32:41.:32:43.

minutes of their games than any other team in the league. Is that

:32:44.:32:47.

what they have to do? Go out and look to score from the off and play

:32:48.:32:51.

attacking rugby? When you go away from home you have to be positive.

:32:52.:32:55.

You have to win the territorial battle and when you get in their

:32:56.:32:58.

half you have to be accurate. I think they will be looking to get

:32:59.:33:02.

out of the blocks, and it is in their DNA to start quickly and get

:33:03.:33:06.

points on the board. With Scott Williams back in the form he has

:33:07.:33:11.

come back in, they have every chance. The Ospreys, slightly

:33:12.:33:15.

different scenario in that they are four points behind Ulster but their

:33:16.:33:20.

fixture is at home and they have scored three bonus points in the

:33:21.:33:24.

last few games, so they are on a roll. They are on a roll and no one

:33:25.:33:28.

would want to play them at the moment. I think they rely heavily on

:33:29.:33:36.

one player to drag them through the start of the season and they got

:33:37.:33:40.

some form back. They develop confidence in Europe but now you can

:33:41.:33:43.

see they on a different trajectory and they are a tough team to beat. I

:33:44.:33:49.

think they will win that one. Ulster smashed Leinster and opposed them

:33:50.:33:53.

from the top of the league. Yes, the league is pretty competitive. You

:33:54.:33:56.

look at the top six and it's brilliant it's come down to the last

:33:57.:33:59.

week for the clubs and supporters and I think the Ospreys will not

:34:00.:34:03.

lose at home. I think they have too much firepower, talking about Dan

:34:04.:34:08.

Biggar and Alun Wyn Jones, you have leaders and behind them as well.

:34:09.:34:14.

Somebody like James King, Rhys Webb, these are top international players

:34:15.:34:17.

and guys who can fly the flag even without those other guys. A strong

:34:18.:34:22.

team and I don't see them losing. Very interesting next week, super

:34:23.:34:25.

Saturday and all the games on the same time so we will have the

:34:26.:34:28.

calculators ready. Onto something a bit different, as football is known

:34:29.:34:33.

as the beautiful game but perhaps not when it's played by an ungainly

:34:34.:34:37.

retired rugby players, as Beth found out. To all of you loyal rugby fans

:34:38.:34:44.

and Scrum V viewers, may I apologise for what you are about to see,

:34:45.:34:48.

football. But it's football and a great cause. It's great to get all

:34:49.:34:53.

the boys here but the ultimate thing is to raise money and it's a great

:34:54.:34:58.

effort by Gethin Jones to get all of these people here. A ragtag outfit.

:34:59.:35:03.

A little bit disappointed with the professionalism. We asked them to

:35:04.:35:08.

stay in, and you can see by the performance they didn't do well. If

:35:09.:35:11.

he is the manager, and we haven't heard him say a word, I'm putting

:35:12.:35:15.

all the blame on him. You just have to survive. The boys are doing not

:35:16.:35:21.

too bad at the moment. Have you been a manager before? In any sport? I

:35:22.:35:27.

don't think I have. Maybe a social manager somewhere. It is hard work

:35:28.:35:35.

for them football players, but it's a good cause and a great day. Lots

:35:36.:35:40.

of people saying that the rugby players are faster than the

:35:41.:35:46.

footballers. I'm not sure what game they are watching. Yes, there's some

:35:47.:35:49.

really good athletes on the pitch. But not on the rugby side at the

:35:50.:35:53.

moment. I think they are struggling. I keep telling everyone it doesn't

:35:54.:35:57.

matter, it's about a fantastic cause and we are very happy to support it.

:35:58.:36:02.

To be honest I didn't think it would be as comfortable as it is today. A

:36:03.:36:07.

few men trying to take me out, like Gareth Thomas, and I wasn't happy

:36:08.:36:10.

about that. But it has been great fun. Do you watch rugby on the TV?

:36:11.:36:16.

It's all big hits, trying to have each other's eyeballs out, but apart

:36:17.:36:28.

from Shanklin, he's a mess. I expected a bit more action. I can't

:36:29.:36:32.

play rugby. If they got me on a rugby field, they would get their

:36:33.:36:35.

own back on me in seconds, but it was a good day all round. We were

:36:36.:36:41.

really enthusiastic or ten minutes, and then the energy levels were zero

:36:42.:36:47.

and you can tell a lot of them have had no physical activity in three or

:36:48.:36:50.

four years. Good fun and we've raised money that's what all about.

:36:51.:36:55.

When you see somebody like Craig Bellamy, a proper footballer and you

:36:56.:36:58.

think you are half decent, but you are not. You are terrible. It is

:36:59.:37:03.

good that Craig has given us some feedback. Something to work on and

:37:04.:37:06.

we have 12 months to put it right. A few training sessions before next

:37:07.:37:07.

week. Jamie, you were involved in that,

:37:08.:37:16.

drafted in as a late replacement but you manage to avoid actually

:37:17.:37:19.

playing. How did you dodge the bullets? Sam got injured yesterday

:37:20.:37:24.

and he was meant to manage the all-star team and I got the call to

:37:25.:37:27.

come in as a last minute replacement. Fantastic event, great

:37:28.:37:31.

charity and a lot of money raised for a great cause. It was hilarious

:37:32.:37:36.

at times. We had a few Olympic athletes running rings around the

:37:37.:37:39.

old rugby boys but a great turnout and really funny. We won 9-1. A 9-1

:37:40.:37:46.

victory for the ex-footballers and some of the rugby players showing a

:37:47.:37:50.

total lack of skill. A little clip from Andy Powell. Can you critique

:37:51.:37:57.

this from the opposition standpoint? A bit of an overhead bicycle kick?

:37:58.:38:08.

Blame it on the pitch. Blame it on the studs. Back to the serious

:38:09.:38:13.

business and you can't get much more serious than a tour of New Zealand.

:38:14.:38:45.

It gets our blood pumping, -- and it must get your blood pumping, Jamie

:38:46.:38:52.

as you're going. Do you approach it with trepidation or fear or a

:38:53.:38:56.

mixture? Both and excitement. You play against the All Blacks and they

:38:57.:39:02.

are the trendsetters in every facet of the game of rugby. That is why

:39:03.:39:05.

they are world champions the last two times and certainly when you go

:39:06.:39:09.

out there and you play New Zealand at home, it's one thing, but to go

:39:10.:39:13.

out there is probably the toughest tour you can go on. As a squad and

:39:14.:39:18.

group of players, we know that anything short of our best won't

:39:19.:39:22.

even come close out there. That is the challenge. That's where you want

:39:23.:39:24.

to be as a professional rugby player, going on a tour like that

:39:25.:39:27.

knowing where you stand in the pecking order. We get to play the

:39:28.:39:30.

world champions and that a fantastic opportunity. There are Wales fans

:39:31.:39:36.

who might be worried about the injury to Sam Warburton yesterday as

:39:37.:39:39.

he went off in the first. We spoke to the Blues today and they have

:39:40.:39:43.

reassured us that it's not a serious injury as first thought. He has been

:39:44.:39:49.

assessed and scanned and the Blues will be checking him out when they

:39:50.:39:53.

are back in camp. That raises the question, if Sam Warburton does Mr

:39:54.:39:57.

tour, and we know Justin Tipuric is out of the tour, so there could be a

:39:58.:40:03.

vacancy for the openside berth. Good job we have a few good sevens in

:40:04.:40:08.

there. We are blessed. I think Sam is going to be OK from what we

:40:09.:40:13.

understand. Obviously we have Ellis Jenkins and James King from

:40:14.:40:15.

yesterday and there is James Davies playing very well. James Davies

:40:16.:40:23.

might be tempted by a tour to New Zealand for midweek game and to hold

:40:24.:40:27.

the tackle bag, but he has the opportunity to be an Olympian this

:40:28.:40:31.

year and to go to Rio, and I would really hope that Warren Gatland sees

:40:32.:40:35.

the bigger picture and the personal development opportunities for James

:40:36.:40:39.

Davies to go and spend time with the rowers and athletes and the cyclists

:40:40.:40:44.

and learn and develop what the best athletes in all disciplines across

:40:45.:40:48.

the world do. Who knows? Britain might have a chance of a medal,

:40:49.:40:52.

rather than playing a midweek match in New Zealand, become an Olympian

:40:53.:40:58.

and do all of that. I would encourage him to go, but I would

:40:59.:41:04.

encourage. You are renowned as a guy who made the most of life, you when

:41:05.:41:08.

to Quins, Cambridge University, France, every opportunity that came

:41:09.:41:12.

your way and that is a tough dilemma if he is faced with it. He has to go

:41:13.:41:17.

with his heart and his gut instinct and whatever decision he makes is

:41:18.:41:19.

the right one because it's what he wants to do. There is no doubt he

:41:20.:41:26.

will be in potential to go to New Zealand and there is the alembic

:41:27.:41:30.

opportunity, but I'm sure he has thought about it and spoken to his

:41:31.:41:33.

brother about it -- Olympic opportunity. I'm sure he has. What

:41:34.:41:38.

about other boulders on this tour? Gatland will have to take a bigger

:41:39.:41:43.

squad and he will need a separate 15th in a midweek game. Anyone who

:41:44.:41:48.

saw on Judgment Day yesterday, billed as a Wales trial, that might

:41:49.:41:50.

have caught the eye for Warren Gatland? Whether he will go with it

:41:51.:41:57.

I don't know, but I like Rory Thornton who has been in the under

:41:58.:42:04.

20s. He was on a jewel contract. Adam Beard went off yesterday having

:42:05.:42:10.

played quite well prior to departing the field. I'd like to see one of

:42:11.:42:15.

those two guys going. At the backs, Adam Hughes played quite well for

:42:16.:42:20.

the Dragons yesterday. We know lad from under 20 coaching days and he's

:42:21.:42:23.

really committed rugby player and very busy. He can play centre, the

:42:24.:42:28.

wing and he gives you versatility. They are young players. There is

:42:29.:42:34.

another seven around, Ollie Griffiths, and I like him. He has

:42:35.:42:38.

been billed as a young Sam Warburton and he is another killed -- kid who

:42:39.:42:42.

firmly in the future who will be a hell of a player. We have some good

:42:43.:42:46.

players to come through. You talk about the ultimate challenge of

:42:47.:42:50.

going to New Zealand, Jamie, and you will be a senior player on that

:42:51.:42:53.

tour. What is it like for the younger players who might be having

:42:54.:42:57.

their first taste of international rugby? I remember going in 2010, the

:42:58.:43:04.

year before the World Cup, and as I said, it's a chance to test yourself

:43:05.:43:08.

against the best. I remember the first test we got blown away really

:43:09.:43:13.

by 30 points and in the last game at Carisbrook, and then in the second

:43:14.:43:18.

test we conceded a last-minute try and it killed the scoreline a bit,

:43:19.:43:22.

but we felt better in the second one. A lot of players came of age on

:43:23.:43:29.

that tour and went on to feature in the World Cup in New Zealand later

:43:30.:43:33.

on. It's a great place, not just for the guys who start, but the guys who

:43:34.:43:39.

travel as well and that experience, that midweek game against the

:43:40.:43:43.

Chiefs, they are on fire. Again, that's a great opportunity. There

:43:44.:43:47.

are those that say it's a good time to go. No Dan Carter, no Richie

:43:48.:43:53.

McCaw, no Conrad Smith. Do you go along with that? No, I don't. No

:43:54.:43:57.

doubt that they have planned for that. There will be a succession

:43:58.:44:04.

plan. Players like Kieran Read, Ben Smith, Aaron Smith, these guys will

:44:05.:44:10.

step up as senior players. As I said, you have to give them the

:44:11.:44:14.

utmost respect. They just won the World Cup may have been the best

:44:15.:44:18.

side in the world for a decade. That is the benchmark. If anyone has a

:44:19.:44:21.

conveyor belt of talent, it is the All Blacks. We talked about Judgment

:44:22.:44:25.

Day comedy extravaganza at the principality stadium, and today

:44:26.:44:31.

another bumper day of rugby with the sway like finals. In the first of

:44:32.:44:39.

the afternoon finals, but a report fought back to score two converted

:44:40.:44:43.

tries and sneak a victory. The ball moved swiftly out with a lovely

:44:44.:44:48.

inside pass and Stefan Powell scored. Scrum-half Ben Williams

:44:49.:44:53.

kicked the all-important conversion to win the game 20-18. The Plate

:44:54.:45:01.

Final was a local derby between two villages for mild apart. Penallta

:45:02.:45:10.

got the only score of the game through Ryan Davis. But their joy

:45:11.:45:16.

turned to heartache deep into injury time when Liam Jones with a

:45:17.:45:21.

last-gasp drop goal won the game, with the last kick. What drama. And

:45:22.:45:26.

they could be league success to follow for the foxes next week --

:45:27.:45:32.

there could be. That was the ball and the plate and the cup final is

:45:33.:45:38.

going on as we speak. 13-6 in the second half. The only try of the

:45:39.:45:41.

game so far from the scrum-half, Rhodri Davies. We have a little bit

:45:42.:45:48.

of time left to reflect more on Judgment Day, and Jamie said at the

:45:49.:45:52.

top of the programme he was jealousy was not involved. It really has gone

:45:53.:45:55.

from strength to strength and much was made of the fact there was a

:45:56.:45:59.

record crowd for regional rugby yesterday, 18,000 up on last year 's

:46:00.:46:03.

figure. Any reason why it cannot be a sell-out in years to come?

:46:04.:46:07.

Absolutely not. A huge amount of credit must go to the regions and

:46:08.:46:11.

the union for the big marketing push they put on it. The regions have not

:46:12.:46:16.

been really attracting crowds generally but to suddenly sell the

:46:17.:46:19.

stadium out is a huge boost. Very good ticket pricing as well and it's

:46:20.:46:25.

gone from normal regional support to beyond that community. Getting

:46:26.:46:30.

people in, children as well, and maybe future regional supporters,

:46:31.:46:34.

and now I think part of the rugby calendar. At the end of the season

:46:35.:46:37.

are used to be a cup final on a sunny day, but now it will be

:46:38.:46:41.

Judgment Day and people will go to Cardiff for that. Briefly, guys, who

:46:42.:46:46.

is going to win the Pro12? Glasgow. The same. Glasgow. The defending

:46:47.:46:53.

champions to defend their title. Unanimous for the boys. That's about

:46:54.:46:58.

all we have time for. Next week is Super Saturday and we will be there

:46:59.:47:01.

for every minute of every game and I hope you can join us. In the

:47:02.:47:05.

meantime, put your hands together to thank all our guests this evening,

:47:06.:47:15.

Gwyn Jones, Mr Phil Davies, and of course, our special cameo appearance

:47:16.:47:21.

from Doctor Jamie Roberts. And as it is Judgment Day, give yourself a

:47:22.:47:23.

round of applause as well. So, we have had a fantastic weekend

:47:24.:47:36.

of regional rugby. It's been a record-breaking weekend as we have

:47:37.:47:41.

said. Next Saturday, super Saturday, all the games kick off the same time

:47:42.:47:45.

and we will have every minute of the action on Scrum V. I hope you can

:47:46.:47:49.

join us on Saturday and again for Scrum V on Sunday. Enjoy the rest of

:47:50.:47:52.

your bank holiday weekend, I will see you next week. Good night.
