Webb shows his strength and he is over. And the Ospreys are running | :00:17. | :00:28.
away with it. Tom James goes all the way himself. And that is a superb | :00:29. | :00:33.
try for the Blues. Brilliant breakaway. They have with bin finish | :00:34. | :00:46.
the difficult places to go but this weekend, the Ospreys and Cardiff | :00:47. | :00:50.
Blues have done just that. Gareth Thomas and Phil Davies are our | :00:51. | :00:54.
guests this evening. We would be talking premises, Pro12 and the | :00:55. | :00:58.
Lions. We start with a trip to the Galway sports ground. Bradley Davies | :00:59. | :01:07.
was one of three changes to the Ospreys along with scrum-half Rhys | :01:08. | :01:14.
Webb. After hat-trick of tries last week, Sam Parry kept his placed | :01:15. | :01:18.
header Scott Baldwin. Connacht made four changes. | :01:19. | :01:32.
COMMENTATOR: Webb shows his strength and he is over. You really can't | :01:33. | :01:46.
afford to give that man much space. Bradley Davies, as you would expect, | :01:47. | :01:49.
making a nuisance of himself in the middle. He comes in and clears out. | :01:50. | :02:04.
Jack Carthy doubles his scores and that of Connacht. Still they keep | :02:05. | :02:20.
coming. Dillane, it is an opportunity. And they deserve that | :02:21. | :02:27.
for the excellent build-up, well controlled by the half-backs. Just | :02:28. | :02:43.
what the Ospreys needed. An opportunity, though hesitation in | :02:44. | :02:50.
going for the sticks. -- no hesitation. Solid strike and that | :02:51. | :02:55.
was a very important kick for the Ospreys. Webb organising, James | :02:56. | :02:59.
stands off and weights. He goes to the left-hand side. | :03:00. | :03:25.
Wrapped up, that is John and can he get away? He is being chased by | :03:26. | :03:31.
Healy but he does exceptionally well, what a great tackle. Rhys Webb | :03:32. | :03:38.
goes over for his second try and surely you would say that is the | :03:39. | :03:51.
type that seals the victory. Looks like they will try and have some fun | :03:52. | :03:58.
in the last five minutes. He puts the ball into space. The Ospreys are | :03:59. | :04:13.
running away with it. The drive comes over the top. I think the | :04:14. | :04:18.
Canadian has done very well. Turned it over. Rhys Webb, kicks it over | :04:19. | :04:26.
the dead-ball line. 32-11, four tries, two for Rhys Webb. The | :04:27. | :04:39.
backline had accuracy, we stayed with it. Fantastic result for | :04:40. | :04:48.
spread, a bonus point for them and the stats tell the story. Best on | :04:49. | :04:56.
stats and scoreboard, it seems the Ospreys have undergone a renaissance | :04:57. | :05:00.
in the off-season. A disappointing season last year, they have | :05:01. | :05:06.
rediscovered their mojo. It was a fantastic victory, not just the | :05:07. | :05:09.
actual game but the way they played. For me, what I saw of it, I like the | :05:10. | :05:15.
way the back three worked. They all wanted to get their hands on the | :05:16. | :05:18.
ball. You could see it went through the whole team. Not just the first | :05:19. | :05:23.
touch but the second, looking for the ball. They are on a high at the | :05:24. | :05:28.
moment, a confident team and with the players they have, a dangerous | :05:29. | :05:34.
team. It is all about attitude and Galway, you have to impose yourself | :05:35. | :05:38.
early and Ospreys did exactly that. What impressed me, they know that | :05:39. | :05:42.
Connacht were hurting from the first game. They set about moving the ball | :05:43. | :05:48.
and keeping the ball and the ball control generally was excellent in | :05:49. | :05:52.
the first 15 or 20 minutes, they dominated possession. They kept the | :05:53. | :05:59.
ball, as you can see here, coming over the halfway line and keeping | :06:00. | :06:04.
it. That took the Connacht mojo away from them if you like. Webb as we | :06:05. | :06:11.
know is a great scrum-half in terms of playing the forwards around the | :06:12. | :06:16.
corner. They kept the ball. They had a few turnovers but then they were | :06:17. | :06:20.
challenging in the line-out. In act-macro in that first 20 minutes | :06:21. | :06:24.
could not get a foothold in the game. It was a great turnover and a | :06:25. | :06:30.
great pass and they kept the ball. If you are coming off the back of a | :06:31. | :06:34.
bad loss, you want to start with a bang. Rhys Webb and Sam Davies are | :06:35. | :06:40.
two of the best generals, game management is critical playing away | :06:41. | :06:44.
from home. We made the point last week that even when the game was out | :06:45. | :06:48.
of sight, they didn't chuck the ball around, they stuck to their plan. | :06:49. | :06:53.
Connacht started the second half quite well. They scored. This is the | :06:54. | :07:01.
Ospreys coming back. Rhys Webb is highlighted. What I liked about | :07:02. | :07:04.
this, great driving control but not a big kick. Eight dink over the top | :07:05. | :07:10.
which made their defender work hard to get back. It made the full-back | :07:11. | :07:17.
worked really hard. Sam Davies with a great take. He just can't get | :07:18. | :07:24.
there, what a catch. Good control as well by Sam. He is involved,, you | :07:25. | :07:29.
have a hooker here who has come out with great skill. Webb pushes | :07:30. | :07:39.
himself a bit wider and he pushes it in, the real nugget here was | :07:40. | :07:42.
Connacht taking it back into their 22. This allowed Tyler Adler, after | :07:43. | :07:48.
a few good phrases, it allowed him to score. That gave him the momentum | :07:49. | :07:54.
in the last ten minutes. Good to see him back after most of last year | :07:55. | :08:01.
missing through injury. By way of contrast, Connacht, the defending | :08:02. | :08:05.
champions, they are bottom of the table, conceding 79 points and ten | :08:06. | :08:08.
tries in two games, what has happened? Lou macro it is difficult | :08:09. | :08:14.
with expectations, nobody expected them to win the league last year, | :08:15. | :08:17.
now they have the back it up. Teams will be more prepared because they | :08:18. | :08:22.
are playing the champions. They were out thought, yesterday. You would | :08:23. | :08:27.
say go back to the drawing board but that is what they have just done | :08:28. | :08:29.
after the pre-season. They can't rewrite everything because they only | :08:30. | :08:34.
have a certain amount of time until next week 's game. There has to be | :08:35. | :08:39.
something there but as players and coaches, they need to get in a room | :08:40. | :08:43.
and find out what it is. Something is missing and only the players know | :08:44. | :08:48.
what it is. As the public watch it, I can see the end easy as is not | :08:49. | :08:53.
what it was. They had a hand on the ball, it is not the same as it was | :08:54. | :08:58.
last year for some reason. May be missing some players more than they | :08:59. | :09:03.
thought they would. Congratulations to Ospreys, that win took them top | :09:04. | :09:08.
of the Pro12 table. The Blues travel to Cork on Friday night and were | :09:09. | :09:12.
able to maintain a move which -- winning start to the season. Gethin | :09:13. | :09:21.
Jenkins and Gareth Anscombe were promoted from the bench to the | :09:22. | :09:27.
starting line-up. Josh Turnbull made his first start of the season. Sam | :09:28. | :09:31.
Warburton's season began on the bench. Two changes for Leinster | :09:32. | :09:34.
after winning last week. COMMENTATOR: Superb run by Dan Fish. | :09:35. | :09:49.
Tom James is in support of Nick Williams. Good counter by the Blues. | :09:50. | :09:54.
Williams has two men on his outside, Dan Fish is one and Cory Allen | :09:55. | :10:00.
hasn't quite got it to get through to the corner, good tackle by Rory | :10:01. | :10:08.
Scannell puts him out. Anscombe, and fish involved again. Tom James | :10:09. | :10:15.
coming up, Tom James goes all the way himself, that is a great score | :10:16. | :10:20.
for Tom James and the Blues. They threatened earlier with a counter, | :10:21. | :10:27.
this time they finished it off. Jack O'Donoghue, advantage played for | :10:28. | :10:38.
offside. Into the 22. Lovely pick-up and the support was there from | :10:39. | :10:43.
Andrew Conway. So disappointing for the Blues after the great start, to | :10:44. | :10:51.
give away a try like that. There is the tap down. Great run, has support | :10:52. | :10:58.
either side, Tom James on the inside. Tom James is too quick for | :10:59. | :11:02.
O'Donoghue and that is a great try, a second superb try for Tom James. | :11:03. | :11:10.
Tremendous effort from the Blues to keep out Munster, time after time | :11:11. | :11:14.
they are knocking at the door. Duncan Williams tries to go | :11:15. | :11:23.
underneath. Incredible pressure. He has a go. Kilcoyne has got there. | :11:24. | :11:42.
Brilliant play by Matthew Morgan. Well done to Lloyd Williams. It is | :11:43. | :11:49.
on for Dan Fish and he can't get over and that is a superb try -- | :11:50. | :11:54.
canters over. Really it break away and so many good handling skills | :11:55. | :12:01.
resulting in a third try. Dan Fish restores the Blues lead in a | :12:02. | :12:07.
ding-dong battle. To come here and win, last week was a good | :12:08. | :12:10.
performance, we showed you have to have a bench and have real impact | :12:11. | :12:18.
there. Huge credit to this group, we have come out with a huge win. Last | :12:19. | :12:26.
season, the Blues only won once on the road, and they already have an | :12:27. | :12:32.
away win and in Munster. How big a statement? Victory of the weekend. | :12:33. | :12:36.
As Danny Wilson said, to back-up last weekend, a very impressive | :12:37. | :12:41.
performance. To go somewhere like Munster. Undoubtedly one of the | :12:42. | :12:46.
toughest places in Europe to go and come away with a victory is amazing. | :12:47. | :12:50.
What I found really impressive was the strength in depth. They brought | :12:51. | :12:54.
players off the bench, Sam Warburton came off the bench and did well. And | :12:55. | :12:58.
then Matthew Morgan, everybody wanting to see what he can do, one | :12:59. | :13:02.
touch lights up the game and he puts Dan Fish in for the winning try. | :13:03. | :13:07.
Great confidence going forward. Quite a cameo by Matthew Morgan. You | :13:08. | :13:12.
were there in Cork on Friday night. Just before kick-off, the weather | :13:13. | :13:16.
conditions were not conducive to running rugby but it cleared up in | :13:17. | :13:22.
the back three were on fire. Yes, an investment into the umbrella was | :13:23. | :13:26.
great. It was perfect. Dan Fish, as I know from my time, as a coach, he | :13:27. | :13:34.
is a great run at the back. The back three were well positioned and | :13:35. | :13:37.
alert. And alive to any other opportunity. Lloyd is one of your | :13:38. | :13:42.
best scrum-half support players and Daniel Fish comes over for a great | :13:43. | :13:49.
try. He had eight refit game. Tom James is coming back to form, great | :13:50. | :13:54.
to see him in Wales after his work in Exeter. But like the Blues, they | :13:55. | :14:01.
move it wide. Tom can see the mismatch as the Munster prop and | :14:02. | :14:07.
hooker are there. He gets over for a great score. For those two or | :14:08. | :14:12.
living, they were excellent and very important. Great to see him back, | :14:13. | :14:17.
the region's highest try scorer and I think we will see a few more this | :14:18. | :14:22.
season. Like with the Ospreys, the Blues not just throwing it around | :14:23. | :14:25.
but they had a tactical approach that allowed them to attack with | :14:26. | :14:30.
conviction. Absolutely. Their control generally. Was the end of | :14:31. | :14:35.
the game, Kristian Dacey is highlighted, the Corner had just | :14:36. | :14:40.
come, Munster just coming from a driving line-out. Their discipline | :14:41. | :14:47.
there was flat -- fantastic. Working the inside shoulder. They win the | :14:48. | :14:50.
penalty and then they get the ball off the top of the line-out. It is | :14:51. | :14:55.
good control and set up play. Coming towards the end of the game. Tom | :14:56. | :14:59.
Williams with a great kicking cradle, a really high kick and as we | :15:00. | :15:03.
saw with Rhys Webb, he pulls the Munster full-back forward. McCoy was | :15:04. | :15:09.
outstanding all night, they get a good drive and great control. You | :15:10. | :15:13.
can hear Lloyd Williams communicating well with the | :15:14. | :15:17.
forwards, orchestrating them to keep the control. They are not going far | :15:18. | :15:23.
here. He goes hard. Dan Fish, Cory Allen, clearing out. You can see a | :15:24. | :15:27.
plan, there is a real maturity starting to develop. That play gets | :15:28. | :15:36.
them the victory. For me, he has created a squad, the depth of squad | :15:37. | :15:40.
has improved and there is a growing maturity in the group, I fancy the | :15:41. | :15:47.
Blues to have a terrific season. Glasgow are next, who have been on | :15:48. | :15:51.
fire for the first two weeks. A cracking victory against Leinster | :15:52. | :15:57.
yesterday. Tommy Seymour, Ford tries out of the five they scored | :15:58. | :16:02.
altogether. They wed be fazed by what they see at Cardiff Arms Park | :16:03. | :16:05.
but Gregor Townsend's men really impressing so far. What will the | :16:06. | :16:14.
Blues need to do to step up? Because under a plea this would be the | :16:15. | :16:18.
toughest game. It will be, both teams have an intent to play rugby | :16:19. | :16:23.
and they are strong defensively. Glasgow, if you turn the ball over | :16:24. | :16:26.
and have poor kicks, they will attack with menace. As Tom Seymour | :16:27. | :16:31.
shows there, he goes on the broken field and he can score from set | :16:32. | :16:37.
plays. It will be important for the Blues, the line-out is going really | :16:38. | :16:41.
well. The scrum can improve but he knows that. Get the platform right, | :16:42. | :16:46.
the breakdown looks good. And defensively, they really well | :16:47. | :16:50.
organised. Graham Steadman has come in and they are well-organised. The | :16:51. | :16:54.
tickly the inside shoulder where the defenders are keeping busy. | :16:55. | :16:57.
Sometimes Glasgow like to do the switches or the ball back inside and | :16:58. | :17:02.
the Blues will just be ready. Looking forward to that one. | :17:03. | :17:07.
Speaking of tasty ties, the West Wales derby was probably the pick of | :17:08. | :17:11.
the round in the Premiership this weekend. | :17:12. | :17:21.
The sun was shining on Carmarthen Park as Llanelli arrive for the | :17:22. | :17:27.
first local derby of the season. On a perfect day for rugby, they were | :17:28. | :17:30.
looking to keep that winning feeling. The head coaches share an | :17:31. | :17:34.
office, who would be enjoying their day in the sun? COMMENTATOR: Lee | :17:35. | :17:41.
Williams making his way. A quick ball for Connor Lloyd. He finds | :17:42. | :17:48.
Evans, beautiful hands by Myhill. And Osborne finishes it off with | :17:49. | :17:55.
beautiful handling. The inside ball to Lee Williams and gliding over. | :17:56. | :18:05.
Quins looking to move it again. Inside two Connor Lloyd. And the | :18:06. | :18:14.
scrum-half with a handoff finishes that one. That is the third. Lee | :18:15. | :18:22.
Williams again with a scuttle inside. To the post, Lee Williams | :18:23. | :18:28.
for the second and that is the bonus point as well. Nathan Edwards will | :18:29. | :18:40.
just about make it. Here is Gethin Robinson on the loose. Clancy back | :18:41. | :18:52.
inside. Under the sticks to finish it off. We are progressing to a | :18:53. | :18:59.
wider game and using the set piece as a platform to play. We put a lot | :19:00. | :19:04.
of work into it, the boys have done a lot themselves. Coaching staff | :19:05. | :19:08.
have been brilliant. It is good to see the hard work and the new things | :19:09. | :19:14.
trying coming. It was billed as the battle between the Thomas Brothers | :19:15. | :19:21.
and it was Sam who came out on top. They took an early 11-0 lead. Life | :19:22. | :19:33.
back in the Premiership isn't easy for Swansea, suffering the second | :19:34. | :19:38.
successive home defeat. Aberavon ran in seven tries. Jack Perkins was | :19:39. | :19:42.
shown a red card full and late tackle. Another high-scoring match | :19:43. | :19:51.
as there were another seven tries, securing a bonus point by half-time. | :19:52. | :19:55.
It was the visitors worst league defeat for six years. Last season, | :19:56. | :20:02.
Cross Keys did the double over Bridgend but this time the ravens | :20:03. | :20:06.
came out on top as they came from behind to secure their first win of | :20:07. | :20:11.
the season. Cross Keys is the only Premiership team without a point so | :20:12. | :20:17.
far. A second away win on the trot for our GC shows they are a force to | :20:18. | :20:24.
be reckoned with. One of four unbeaten teams in the league. On the | :20:25. | :20:30.
breed game was postponed. -- Pontypridd. | :20:31. | :20:39.
Lee Jarvis was on the show last week after Murphy opened their account, | :20:40. | :20:47.
Mark Jones is we, the Head Coach. They are currently third in the | :20:48. | :20:53.
league, two from two, one of four teams undefeated. The new boys | :20:54. | :20:57.
looking to bloody some noses. It has been a good start. Probably Bridgend | :20:58. | :21:03.
and Neath in the last couple of seasons have had the most | :21:04. | :21:07.
transition. They are more evenly matched in some of the more | :21:08. | :21:11.
established teams. You can't fault the effort, they are put a lot of | :21:12. | :21:16.
hard work into key areas and it has paid off. We know the legal split | :21:17. | :21:21.
into two conferences after 15 rounds. Ambitions of the new teams | :21:22. | :21:28.
will have been to just survive. But serious ambitions to make that top | :21:29. | :21:32.
eight now. We have not made any targets, we are just establishing | :21:33. | :21:36.
the side in the division in terms of our brand of rugby. The style of | :21:37. | :21:41.
play we are going to try and implement and test that each week. | :21:42. | :21:46.
To be successful, you need consistency in your execution. What | :21:47. | :21:51.
we have shown is that we are able to sustain error-free rugby for large | :21:52. | :21:55.
periods. We need to put some sparkle into key areas that we have the | :21:56. | :21:59.
players who can do it. You live in Neath, can you show your face? You | :22:00. | :22:05.
may quit it was an interesting afternoon, that is the beauty of it, | :22:06. | :22:08.
you get to travel round the local clubs in South Wales which is great. | :22:09. | :22:13.
And a sabbatical to North Wales once a week as well to hopefully get a | :22:14. | :22:18.
couple of good performances in front of the home crowd. We are well | :22:19. | :22:22.
supported at the moment with buses coming down on a regular basis and | :22:23. | :22:27.
hopefully we can take this form back to North Wales next weekend. A dream | :22:28. | :22:30.
start for you and long may it continue. Phil Davies was involved | :22:31. | :22:37.
until last season, I am sure he will take some of the credit. Back to the | :22:38. | :22:42.
Pro12 and the Dragons welcomed zebra to Rodney Parade. | :22:43. | :22:50.
Thomas Davies made his debut with Lewis Evans returning to bolster the | :22:51. | :22:59.
back row. Moss and Morgan also made their first starts of the season. | :23:00. | :23:03.
After losing by 50 points last week against Ospreys, zebra rocked up | :23:04. | :23:12.
having never won there. And all of the scoring came in the first half, | :23:13. | :23:20.
two penalties each. The only joy came from the Dragons. Howard, his | :23:21. | :23:27.
second in two matches. His side are up and running, no such thing as a | :23:28. | :23:31.
bad win and all that but they need to get better. It is important we | :23:32. | :23:37.
get a win, we tried to play a different way and that came through | :23:38. | :23:41.
but we overplayed. We made too many errors. Our set piece is not quite | :23:42. | :23:46.
where it should be. Ultimately there was a chance to get a bonus point | :23:47. | :23:54.
win. We failed to do it. No such thing as a bad win, the Dragons were | :23:55. | :23:59.
desperate for one, their first victory in the league since January. | :24:00. | :24:05.
But far from convincing. I spoke to him last week and he said they | :24:06. | :24:10.
wanted to play a new brand of rugby and try and throw it around a bit | :24:11. | :24:13.
more. When you have younger players, they are not sure when to do that. | :24:14. | :24:19.
As he alluded to, a bit of overplaying. I love the fact they | :24:20. | :24:25.
are going to have a go but they have to learn to be able to build solid | :24:26. | :24:29.
performances from good fundamentals. The set piece is something they need | :24:30. | :24:34.
to improve and that will be a focus for them. The intent is there to | :24:35. | :24:39.
play and that is the key thing. Scoreless in the second half, that | :24:40. | :24:43.
is quite an ordeal for the spectators. We talk about attracting | :24:44. | :24:47.
more spectators to this Lee, a scoreless second half is not the way | :24:48. | :24:51.
to go. As a Dragons fan, you would have been expecting to see more | :24:52. | :24:56.
tries. Zebra for all of their effort are properly one of the worst teams | :24:57. | :25:03.
in the league. If they can't implement the game plan against | :25:04. | :25:06.
zebra, are they going to be able to do it against the better teams in | :25:07. | :25:10.
the league? Will they be able to play that way this year. It does | :25:11. | :25:18.
scare me but you look at it and hope that through a victory, they can | :25:19. | :25:26.
gain confidence. The manner of the victory, you can sit there and | :25:27. | :25:31.
analyse it after, you can't say what you achieved. Munster next for the | :25:32. | :25:35.
Dragons and they have a week to try and improve things. We will let you | :25:36. | :25:39.
know how they get on but we will try something different now. At a time | :25:40. | :25:43.
when many grassroots clubs are struggling we have visited one West | :25:44. | :25:48.
Wales village the club has been reborn, 16 years after disappearing | :25:49. | :25:55.
altogether. Friday evening and we finished work for the week. While | :25:56. | :25:58.
most 21 euros would be thinking about going out and having fun, | :25:59. | :26:02.
Nathan Jones has other priorities as he makes the 50 minute journey from | :26:03. | :26:07.
his home to ferry side rugby club. He happens to be player, coach, club | :26:08. | :26:16.
secretary, you name it, he probably does it. What motivates young blood | :26:17. | :26:24.
to get involved so dramatically like this? As a teenager coming down to | :26:25. | :26:29.
ferry side, this rugby pitch and the club was like a ghost town. The | :26:30. | :26:34.
unfortunate passing of Evans, he was a legend, it gave an opportunity to | :26:35. | :26:39.
get the team back together to play once a year. Since then, we have had | :26:40. | :26:45.
two games and it has grown since then. We managed to get a team in | :26:46. | :26:50.
the league now and hopefully we will be successful. It does get stressful | :26:51. | :26:57.
but I get a massive buzz out of it and I can't complain. It is a | :26:58. | :27:00.
feeling of giving something back to such a small community. I've got to | :27:01. | :27:10.
give him all the help he can get, he gets ahead of himself sometimes. | :27:11. | :27:13.
Saying that he can't do this, the things he can do everything but he | :27:14. | :27:18.
can't. You have to have support and you have to get the community to | :27:19. | :27:23.
support as well. In November and the pitch is wet, you lose one, maybe | :27:24. | :27:27.
another and the injuries mount up, that is where the difficulty comes | :27:28. | :27:32.
in, are you prepared for that? That is when they call me on as a super | :27:33. | :27:37.
sub at 55. The sport has been my life. Is that why there is a | :27:38. | :27:45.
paramedic bag? You must be proud and pleased to see them back up and | :27:46. | :27:50.
playing again. I am pleased there is a team here. What would you do | :27:51. | :28:00.
without rugby this Chamakh there is no point or anything, is there? What | :28:01. | :28:08.
has it been like for the last 16 years without a team? It has been | :28:09. | :28:13.
sad because we had a good team. I am pleased the boys have got together | :28:14. | :28:17.
and we will have the team and ferry side is on the map. A big day and | :28:18. | :28:22.
you are excited because your fella is playing. Stuart, number three. | :28:23. | :28:34.
They are your local rivals, but I go happy to see Ferryside I? | :28:35. | :28:43.
Absolutely. I live in Ferryside. There is great support today. | :28:44. | :28:46.
Hopefully it will continue. It is always good to see a any club that | :28:47. | :28:51.
has unfortunately disbanded, to see them coming back. It has been hard | :28:52. | :29:00.
work to put aside together today. We have used 18-year-olds. Do you think | :29:01. | :29:05.
it will keep going? Hopefully, if we get the support, the community get | :29:06. | :29:08.
behind them, hopefully they can sustain it. Over the men. All of the | :29:09. | :29:16.
hard work for the last seven weeks, it has shown. This was probably our | :29:17. | :29:21.
toughest test this season. We have eight or nine players eyed. For boys | :29:22. | :29:25.
to come in and do a job like today, I cannot see any more. -- cannot | :29:26. | :29:32.
say. There are few things | :29:33. | :29:34.
as exciting in international rugby than the prospect | :29:35. | :29:36.
of And on Wednesday, world rugby's | :29:37. | :29:37.
worst kept secret was finally out when Warren Gatland was revealed | :29:38. | :29:40.
as the head coach for next summer's Ladies and gentlemen, it is my | :29:41. | :29:51.
privilege as tour manager to announce that the head coach for the | :29:52. | :29:56.
2017 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand is Warren Gatland. One | :29:57. | :30:04.
of the things are about the Lions, is the tradition and ethos, taking | :30:05. | :30:08.
part in community things, charity things, making sure we embrace the | :30:09. | :30:12.
communities as well. If we do that and have some open training | :30:13. | :30:18.
sessions, get out to the schools and hospitals, the New Zealanders will | :30:19. | :30:22.
massively respect that. If we play some good rugby, they will be | :30:23. | :30:26.
parochial, they will not allow us anything and get behind their team, | :30:27. | :30:32.
but if an Lions team goes there and plays good rugby, they will love | :30:33. | :30:35.
that and it will respect and get behind the Lions as well. That is | :30:36. | :30:41.
our challenge. One man who knows all about the enormity of the challenges | :30:42. | :30:46.
the 2005 Lions captain Gareth Thomas. Warren Gatland making an | :30:47. | :30:50.
interesting point. Australia, you can hide from the scrutiny, but they | :30:51. | :30:55.
New Zealand, it is a Rugby nation. You have got to manage the pressure. | :30:56. | :31:01.
Yes, the pressure and the expectancy. It is the most difficult | :31:02. | :31:06.
place in the world to play rugby. Let alone the itinerary they have. | :31:07. | :31:10.
You have got to be respectful. You have got to be respectful of what | :31:11. | :31:15.
you are about as a rugby player and a British line steam. You're going | :31:16. | :31:19.
there to be successful. Not many teams have done it. There is lots of | :31:20. | :31:27.
psychology. You have to be strong physically but mentally. Talking of | :31:28. | :31:31.
the brutality of the itinerary and the challenge that awaits them, look | :31:32. | :31:35.
at the schedule. It has been dubbed Mission impossible by some people. | :31:36. | :31:41.
Ten games, all five super rugby teams, I match against the | :31:42. | :31:45.
Barbarians, I match against the New Zealand Maoris. Not to mention the | :31:46. | :31:50.
three tests. Where do you stand on this? This will make it even harder | :31:51. | :31:55.
and preparation time will be a bare minimum? It is an unbelievably | :31:56. | :32:00.
difficult schedule. It is almost 15-0 to New Zealand because they | :32:01. | :32:06.
have set this up. In 2005, what I encountered, quickly we had to get | :32:07. | :32:12.
the midweek team and the test team. A display to divide in the camp. | :32:13. | :32:15.
With the schedule this line steam has, he will have to do the same. | :32:16. | :32:21.
There is no way you can go back to back against the super franchises. | :32:22. | :32:25.
They are like international teams. You cannot prepare for a test in | :32:26. | :32:29.
between. New Zealand have been shrewd in the way they have said to | :32:30. | :32:33.
Warren Gatland, how are you going to handle this? Are you going to split | :32:34. | :32:38.
the camp, you will have a midweek team are testing? Will you keep | :32:39. | :32:41.
everyone together? It is a strange atmosphere when you | :32:42. | :33:04.
split the teams. That is something that Warren Gatland probably does | :33:05. | :33:07.
not want to do. Can you first see a smaller squad. It was a 45 man squad | :33:08. | :33:10.
with you guys under Clive Woodward? It was too big. I think he will try | :33:11. | :33:13.
and take a smaller squad. When you look at the schedule after a | :33:14. | :33:15.
difficult season, the Premiership, PRO12, guys will be tired. By the | :33:16. | :33:18.
end of the tour, Clive was trying to first see that he would not bring | :33:19. | :33:22.
players in. You try to take everyone together. If he takes a smaller | :33:23. | :33:27.
party, people will have to fly over. They will have to get over the jet | :33:28. | :33:31.
lag and a routine. It is easier if you have them there with you, ready | :33:32. | :33:36.
and prepared. Who will be the captain? There are three main | :33:37. | :33:41.
contenders. That may change with the autumn internationals and the Six | :33:42. | :33:48.
Nations. Alun Wyn Jones, Sam Warburton, the incumbent Lions | :33:49. | :33:50.
captain, and Dylan Hartley, who has recently captained England to a | :33:51. | :33:55.
Grand Slam and a 3-0 whitewash in Australia. Who would you pay? They | :33:56. | :33:59.
are all good leaders and they will all play a big role in whether the | :34:00. | :34:08.
tour is successful. For me, I would go for Dylan Hartley. We talk about | :34:09. | :34:11.
the mental and physical edge. What Dylan Hartley has is experience of | :34:12. | :34:15.
beating the try nation teams, being part of an England team that has | :34:16. | :34:19.
gone to Australia and has defeated them. Warren Gatland has knowledge | :34:20. | :34:23.
as a New Zealander. You want knowledge from people who want to | :34:24. | :34:27.
beat these teams. Not just out to be one of them, but how to beat them. | :34:28. | :34:33.
Gareth Thomas selects Dylan Hartley, the Englishman. That is his captain. | :34:34. | :34:38.
I'm sure there will be a backlash on social media. Rob Howley has stepped | :34:39. | :34:43.
into the breach to fill the vacancy left by Warren Gatland as head | :34:44. | :34:47.
coach. His hands will be tied to a degree by the imposition of the | :34:48. | :34:52.
so-called Gatland's Law. We are working hard, trying to keep players | :34:53. | :34:59.
in Wales. It was going to be tougher Rob and myself. The selection | :35:00. | :35:03.
policy, there will be big names that will miss out in the autumn, in | :35:04. | :35:06.
terms of not being involved in the squad. It will be quite dramatic. | :35:07. | :35:14.
The Six Nations will be tough. In Warren Gatland's words, dramatic. | :35:15. | :35:18.
That was on Wednesday, Friday, the list of the seven players captured | :35:19. | :35:22.
by Gatland's Law was published. Those players playing their rugby | :35:23. | :35:27.
outside of Wales. He only has three wild card picks. Those are the | :35:28. | :35:36.
seven. We talked on Friday night about who might be missing out. I | :35:37. | :35:40.
guess Rhys Priestland, because he is not number one for club or country | :35:41. | :35:45.
any more, he will probably be one of the four big names to make side. You | :35:46. | :35:51.
played some of your best rugby in Toulouse. If before you left you had | :35:52. | :35:55.
been told that if you're left Toulouse, you would have given up | :35:56. | :35:59.
your Wales jersey, would you have thought about it? I would not have | :36:00. | :36:04.
gone. Having seen what it was like on the other side, it made me a | :36:05. | :36:09.
better person. The four years I spent there, I won the European cup. | :36:10. | :36:13.
I would never have done that with any of the teams in Wales. I have | :36:14. | :36:17.
played in French championship finals in front of big crowds. I became | :36:18. | :36:22.
better as a player. For me, going away was the best thing I ever did. | :36:23. | :36:27.
I understand we want to see the players playing in the region but we | :36:28. | :36:32.
do not want to hold them back. Without the fans, we have got | :36:33. | :36:36.
nothing. We are potentially going to find ourselves in a situation where | :36:37. | :36:41.
the Six Nations comes around and we're expecting fans to pay ?80 for | :36:42. | :36:45.
a ticket to see a Welsh team that might not be the full strength Welsh | :36:46. | :36:51.
team. Is that they are? Not really. I understand what the union are | :36:52. | :37:02.
trying to do, but echoing the points of Garrett, the experience he had, | :37:03. | :37:05.
for me, you can translate that bike into a better player coming home for | :37:06. | :37:08.
the benefit of Wales. I am for the fans as well, who do not see certain | :37:09. | :37:11.
players week in, week out. We want to see as many as we can. It is | :37:12. | :37:15.
tough. I understand what the union are trying to do but you need your | :37:16. | :37:20.
best talent on the field, trying to win test matches. Another debate | :37:21. | :37:33.
that will rage on as the autumn approaches. Rob Howley has to pick | :37:34. | :37:36.
his first squad, potentially short of some of those players we saw on | :37:37. | :37:37.
of some of those players we saw on the list. | :37:38. | :37:40.
One more PRO12 game to catch up with this week, | :37:41. | :37:42.
and the Scarlets were hoping to recover from their opening | :37:43. | :37:45.
round defeat when they travelled to Edinburgh. | :37:46. | :37:46.
The Scarlets made seven changes, including Olympic medallist James | :37:47. | :37:51.
Davies after his return from the Rio Olympics. His brother returned after | :37:52. | :37:57.
a two-year stint in France. Aled Davies replace Gareth Davies at | :37:58. | :38:02.
scrum-half. Edinburgh made five changes from last week's defeat. | :38:03. | :38:07.
John Hardie returned in the back row. This is an opportunity for the | :38:08. | :38:14.
Scarlets to come again. What on earth is John Hardie doing? The | :38:15. | :38:26.
right foot deep tech, Patchell. That looks like it might be better. It | :38:27. | :38:33.
has just about got there. -- aid is a right footed kick. That will ease | :38:34. | :38:43.
the nerves of Scarlets. Ball on the floor. Barclay needs to get out of | :38:44. | :38:52.
there. Williams has made a mess of it. There is a mass of dead ball | :38:53. | :38:58.
area. Michael Allen has taken full advantage. | :38:59. | :39:09.
-- massive. The Scarlets need to be careful. They have started to get | :39:10. | :39:21.
ragged. It has been coming. That is brainless play from a man who is a | :39:22. | :39:24.
senior player and an international. That is a great price by Jonathan | :39:25. | :39:39.
Davies. And the rest of his colleagues in the midfield. | :39:40. | :39:41.
Edinburgh have been forced to take. That is a stinker of a kick. It will | :39:42. | :39:47.
produce a try. Just what they did not need. Magnus Bradbury, I sigh of | :39:48. | :39:57.
relief. Edinburgh get a try in injury time. Here comes Ball. The | :39:58. | :40:04.
screen pass around the back. I too Steff Evans. Great defence. The ball | :40:05. | :40:10.
is in play. They cannot get it down. Hats off to the Edinburgh defence. | :40:11. | :40:16.
Another disappointing defeat for the Scarlets. There is the league table. | :40:17. | :40:21.
They are down intense. It has a strange look to it with the | :40:22. | :40:25.
defending champions at the bottom. The Ospreys are leading the charge | :40:26. | :40:30.
at the top. Garrett, this was the year the Scarlets were supposed to | :40:31. | :40:33.
shame, the backline that is supposedly the envy of Europe. Last | :40:34. | :40:39.
season the won their first six in a row but they have just lost their | :40:40. | :40:43.
first two, their worst ever start in the PRO12. It is quite a shock to | :40:44. | :40:48.
see. When you look at the players on the field, talking about Wales and | :40:49. | :40:54.
Lions, Lions are about blocking. You play for the region and then you go | :40:55. | :40:57.
onto the Lions. Players are in contention for them yet they are not | :40:58. | :41:04.
playing well for the region. It is quite surprising. A region like | :41:05. | :41:09.
Scarlets, so much expected of them, and yet two game in and they are | :41:10. | :41:15.
chasing tales already. Scott Williams went off the page with a | :41:16. | :41:21.
fairly nasty facial injury. A quick update, you can see the blood | :41:22. | :41:25.
flowing, Scarlets have said he is fine. Six stitches and no | :41:26. | :41:30.
concussion. He should be in contention next week. How much are | :41:31. | :41:34.
they missing some of those front five players? They are looking | :41:35. | :41:39.
underpowered in that department. Rob Evans and Samson Lee are sidelined. | :41:40. | :41:42.
That is two thirds of the Welsh front row. Yes, you can name Phil | :41:43. | :41:51.
John as well. They are missing, for me they are missing about five | :41:52. | :41:55.
players. The more prominent front five forwards. Guys who have left | :41:56. | :42:01.
and guys who are injured. It will be a blow for them. In the two games | :42:02. | :42:06.
they have had, it is important for the coaching team to work on the | :42:07. | :42:11.
basics, get your set piece right, you're kicking game and provide | :42:12. | :42:16.
players with certainty, where they can build their confidence in their | :42:17. | :42:19.
performance. That will be important going into the next couple of weeks. | :42:20. | :42:24.
I think there are going to Ravenhill next weekend. That is the featured | :42:25. | :42:30.
game on Scrum V. It is not an easy place to go. They need certainty and | :42:31. | :42:36.
simplicity to build confidence. They need to get the front five forwards | :42:37. | :42:40.
back as soon as possible. That is the technical things to work on, but | :42:41. | :42:45.
from an emotional point of view, they look low on confidence. If you | :42:46. | :42:49.
were in the changing room, what would you say? Have a look around. | :42:50. | :42:54.
Look at the guy who midfield partner, an international and the | :42:55. | :42:59.
British line. Look at your fullback and your blog. They have quality. | :43:00. | :43:04.
Someone in the group looks to take ownership of the group and take with | :43:05. | :43:08.
them. At the moment, they are looking for a big hitter. I have got | :43:09. | :43:13.
to stop you there. We will continue this emotional speech of fear. That | :43:14. | :43:22.
is it for Scrum V. Proms In The Park follows on BBC Two Wales. This is | :43:23. | :43:23.
something to get you in the mood. That is a great chip and chase. Has | :43:24. | :43:42.
he got the legs? He has. Fantastic. Nobody, but nobody is going to get | :43:43. | :43:43.
anywhere near him. Hello and welcome to BBC | :43:44. | :44:56.
Proms in the Park 2016. We're making history | :44:57. | :45:00.
here tonight as this event | :45:01. | :45:03. |
