Last 16 - Part 2 Snooker: Welsh Open

Good evening. Two more quarterfinal places you for grabs at the 2016

Welsh Open and it has been a mixed day for Wales. One rising star

through to the last eight while the veteran Mark Williams is on his way

home. Mark Selby was pushed all the way by home favourite Williams, but

two centuries and three frames helped the number one confirm his

play in the quarterfinal. APPLAUSE

I'm really happy. The start of the match was a little bit edgy, but

when I won the second frame. Overall I thought it was a really good

match. Next up for the Leicester from jester, old time add

certificate sari, Ronnie O'Sullivan -- adversary.

It could have been a different match. It is what I do when a player

does that. Can I hold on to him? I'm not sure I have got the hardened

match play background behind me yet to mix it, but who knows? I'm just

trying my best every match and I played four really good frames and

the frames that I won. John Higgins is out. Suffering a 4-1 defeat to

Mike ale Human Right -- Michael White.

It is up there with the best wins of my career. Very relaxed I was today.

I don't know why that was. I felt that way since I got out of bed this

morning. I went out there and I tried to enjoy it. And luckily for

me, I came out on top. So here is the last 16:

Neil Robertson with a 4-1 win over Marco Fu. Ronnie O'Sullivan with

that 4-1 win over Yu Delu. Martin Gould beaten 4-1 by last year's

runner-up, Ben Woollaston. We have had another absorbing

afternoon of snooker in Cardiff. Mixed emotions with Mark Williams

going out of the competition this afternoon, but what an achievement

for Michael White. How do you sum that up? He played very well last

night. He is playing some of his best snooker here and he is

definitely going to win the tournament! You've got your money on

him. We heard Ronnie O'Sullivan bigging him up and saying he is a

future champion in Whales. He has got everything he needs. Would you

agree with that? Can he go all the way? Very much so. I have known him

since he was a young lad. The one thing he has got is a winner. He is

that type of person and he worked very hard on his gim. He practises a

lot, you know, and he is a modern day player. He goes for the shot. He

commits himself to everything. Fully commits irrespective of what is

happening and when he is on his best game he is a handful for anybody.

Mark Williams disappointment for him, but he came up against Mark

Selby in inspired form? Well, Mark didn't play as well as yesterday,

but a few people told me he did play OK today, but Mark Selby is a tough

opponent for anybody. Ronnie O'Sullivan, another snooker

He is up against a man who plays his own brand of naughty snooker. Four

titles to his name. One of the most talented players in the world of

snooker. Make some noise for the incredible Judd Trump.

APPLAUSE The two players are out. Our team

calling the action is Iain Watson and Dominic Dale. A fantastic

occasion that both players had. There is a quarterfinal place on

offer. Not much to choose between both players really. Judd Trump,

ranked sixth in the world and Joe Perry ranked tenth. There is only

four spots between them. What is quite interesting is on five

previous appearances playing together, Judd Trump has been the

winner on all five. So Joe Perry will have a point to prove tonight,

I'm sure. Do Marks, what are you -- Do Marks, what are you thinking on

this one. Best of seven. Who are you going to go with? Well, it is

difficult to choose really. There is lots to play for this evening, a

quarterfinal place, I'm sure Joe Perry won't be phased by the fact

that he hasn't beaten Judd Trump in five previous meetings. Four of them

were over the best of seven encounters. So you could read

something into that and if Joe starts badly, he might think about

the fact that he hasn't beaten Judd Trump before. He will know today is

a new day with another opportunity to get one over on Judd Trump.

He is going to get his little extension. He is a very tall lad,

Joe Perry. He is very well liked on the circuit. He is a real nice

fella. That cue ball has just gone away

from him. This will be Joe Perry's first match on this match table. He

played on the back tables. They will have played a lot different. This

match table will play again different to the others. I don't

know why that quite is. The same sort of lights of the same heating

system on there, but this table is definitely playing faster than the

rest. Yes, we just saw a brief glimpse of the set-up. The other

table isn't being used at the moment, but it was earlier. I have

noticed strangely enough that the other table to our left here at the

commentary box, the cushions don't seem to be as quick as they are on

this table here, table one, the main match table, I suppose, we could

call it. I'm sure the cloth has come off the same roll. The only reason I

can think of why two tables would play slightly differently all the

other tables that we have been using in the Welsh Open, they are in close

proximity to each other and there is the television tables and there is a

lot of room behind it and there is light canopies above causing a lot

of heat, but you know, yourself, Darren, you've played out there on

the big stage for many years in your career, the television table always

plays fantastically well, doesn't it? Yes, it does and... Watching at

home members of my club and that, they see balls going in in-off the

knuckles and they think the pockets are big, but they're not. They are

very, very tight, it is just because the leathers in the pockets are so

crisp and bright. It gives you that assumption that the pockets are

bigger, but really, really tight. They are beautiful tables to play

on. In the club, sometimes, even though

you're playing snooker, you need a golf ball to get it around -- golf

club to get it around. Well, if Joe had of studied those

reds that he made contact with he might have known this was going near

the right corner, but it is covered by the other red above it, but I

think Joe can still pot this off the cushion. Too thin.

A chance for Joe Perry here. If he can get on the black, on the low

side, he maybe able to get into the red. That's what he'd like to do.

Well, maybe he can actually get through to the red that's on the

plaque spot now. The problem is he would have to tread a path for a

colour. The first real opportunity to Joe

Perry then. We have seen some wonderful snooker

this week here at this Welsh Open. A capacity crowd in tonight.

They are all hoping to see something a little bit special and wonderful.

Two people in particular, Ricky Coles and bethen are celebrating

their third wedding anniversary tonight and they've come to watch

snooker! I hope she is the avid fan otherwise he could be in the dog

house! Third anniversary, coming to see a

snooker match. Well, he missed that by a long way, Joe Perry.

That's OK. He just sort of give it a bit of a smash and hoped for the

best, but it has finished very good on this yellow. Yes, Darren that's

why I love watching Judd Trump, you never quite know what he's going to

play next. I think he and Ronnie O'Sullivan are two of the game's

most exciting players, but I would have to say Ronnie O'Sullivan oozes

class and Judd, well, he plays sort of a cross between snooker and

9-ball pool. I as a fellow professional love watching and love

playing against him. Yes, I think it is fair to say that Judd Trump is

probably, without being cruel to anybody else, he is the only other

person to rival Ronnie O'Sullivan in the excitement stakes. There are new

players coming along. He has carved a niche for himself as well, the

same as Ronnie. Obviously not quite as consistent as Ronnie has been

over the years and quite as prolific, but when he's on his game,

they don't come any better than Judd Trump.

We can see the ball jump there. Judd hasn't got a choice, he has one into

the centre and one into the right corner. Maybe, he will be able to

hold for the pink off this red. Yes, he played it well. If he goes on to

win this first frame, Judd, from this opportunity, I think Joe Perry

will rue that easy missed red. That brown is in the way for him

just to stun past for this red down towards the green. He played a

clever controlled cannon. He made it a little bit more difficult than the

shot should have been. That was well played.

He is dead straight on this pink, Judd. He really did control that one

well. Sometimes being dead straight on your next ball isn't ideal, but I

think he will be all right in this case. Normally I'd say Judd doesn't

have the cue ball control of a lot of the top players and certainly not

Ronnie O'Sullivan or Marco Fu whose cue ball control is normally

fantastic, but he pots so well. That's his biggest ally.

APPLAUSE That black for the frame ball for Judd. It is a short sprint

to the best of seven. He goes to 69. A chance of a century

in the first frame here. The difficulty for Judd is a ball that

he himself knocked to that side cushion earlier on in the break.

This is the red that Joe missed. Trying to force the angel across to

cannon the red to leave himself on the black. He seemed rather bemused

when he missed that red, Joe Perry, but as Judd misses that pink, he

won't worry that. Judd Trump leads by 1-0.

A solid start by Judd Trump, Terry. He is one of the few modern stars of

the game, I suppose, not to have got his hands on the Welsh Open trophy,

is he playing well enough to go all the way, do you think? I remember

him coming to the Welsh Open, his first appearance in a venue and he

came up from Bristol into Newport, he came up at 12 o'clock and I said,

"When are you on?" He said seven o'clock and I didn't say to him, he

shouldn't have come so early, he was so excited, he lost anyway. He is an

exceptional player. I've got to say that. He hasn't won a lot of ranking

events, he won the UK Championships, which is one of the majors, but I

feel he should be winning more with the skill level he won. It has been

a couple of years since he won one? It is the big ones that he really

wants, the World Championships, the Masters. He had a wonderful

performance against Mark Allen a number of years ago, it was a great

match. He hasn't pushed on from there and I feel that he should be

pushing on to be honest. He is very attractive to watch playing, but he

has got a lovely demeanour around the table, but his potting is just

outstanding and his control of the cue ball. I think the power that he

has got is as good as anybody I have ever seen. Some attractive shoes on

tonight, as well, Judd Trump, but it is Joe Perry to break in this second

frame with Trump leading 1-0. The wrong side of the blue. So there

is still a bit of work to be done. He has got a red near to this right

corner, so he doesn't fancy going out of the baulk area. He will just

play a drag back and roll the red down the cushion. Judd Trump is

blessed with an abundance of cue power. He is having a little look.

He feels the ball is close enough to the corner pocket. Be unmissable and

again, he doesn't lack power. If this black doesn't go up the left

corner, he will be doing a deep screw.

Well, he tried to drag up for the blue and he hasn't quite got into

it. I didn't detect a kick, but I think

Judd was rather surprised he didn't get more out of that. This is what I

say about Judd, he doesn't control the cue ball as well as other top

players do. He pots so well. He covers so many of the awkward

situations he leaves himself in, unfortunately it is just the safety

shot. It will end at 32, but a useful lead nevertheless.

APPLAUSE He is keeping the pressure on Joe Perry. The only shot Joe has

got here is to play the red to the right of the black.

He pushed this red down the table. It is a thin snick, but I think Judd

can get the pot in. It is very thin mind. No problem whatsoever.

APPLAUSE Just overran for the pink there,

Judd. I suppose he could find his way back on to a red using the pink,

but he could cannon the red below and hold for a choice of reds in

either corner. He has come back to look at the pink. He will probably

play for red. What's he going to play here, I wonder?

He leaves this to run. It is running. It's running. It has done

well. That's an excellent shot from Judd. Beautifully judged.

APPLAUSE Getting the long tackle out. He has

got to make sure of the pot on the black. It will cannon on to the red.

It should leave him nicely on the one nearest the pocket. Like a

fishing rod now. It is that long. Years ago, we didn't have these

extensions. We used to have the real old stuff with like 11, 12 Marks il

tip on the end. You had to chalk it to make sure you didn't miscue. It

is amazing how things have come on. An extended spider then that was.

You would have had to climb on the table years ago. Both feet off the

ground. Yeah, in the old days with the old

light shades with the canopies above the table which were only

two-and-a-half feet from the bed and when you played a shot with the

spider, you were so elevated that you couldn't see through the shade

the shot you were playing, but we did away with the long butt and the

half butt, it must be three years ago I would have thought. World

Snooker our governing body ensures every has joints in their accuse to

take extensions. They were never in use so they did away with them.

He must have had a bit of a kick there. But it does not look like it

on the replay. Expected the cue ball to have travelled through a little

bit further. He is a long way behind. There is more than enough

left on the table. Trouble is, he has not had much

table time. And the last time he had a pot, he missed it. And it was

very, very easy. That's a great shot by Joe Perry. Importing that, he

will have forgotten the one he missed in the previous frame. -- in

potting that. It is a very good chance this, for

Joe. In potting this one, he will clear the pink into the corner. The

only awkward red is the one near this corner. But with the black on

its spot, it should not be that much of a problem.

This is going to be the shot. If this goes in and he gets on the

black, you can say this has turned into a real frame-winning chance.

And he has played it very confidently.

The work will begin for Joe Perry shortly. He needs a good angle to

get onto the yellow. He could screw back for the blue. Sticking with the

pink. This looks a bit straight. He does not want to be on the blue side

of the yellow, because importing it, he will probably cannon the green.

He wants to be as straight as he can to screw back behind the green.

That cannon on the blue, I don't think that is a problem.

Depends how straight he is on the yellow. Perfect.

He cued that very well. Awkward cueing over the blue. That is the

problem with this green. Pressure on this one.

Again, just floated it in. This has been a real good effort from Joe

Perry. He will be feeling so much better inside.

Judd Trump, he knows this frame should have been his.

What a fantastic break of 70 that was by Joe Perry. It looked as if

Joe Trump was going to take a 2-0 lead. But it is now all square.

Well, this missed black, he will be sitting there thinking, how did I

miss that? It was the previous shot, really. Should have been a lot

easier on this black. Was there a slight kick? It does not appear so.

But he has missed it while long way. Judging by his demeanour, he did not

cannon the red he was intending to, he either knew he had misjudged it

straightaway or it was a kick. I think we will just have to say it

was not one of his best shots. As for Joe Perry, he did not show any

signs of making a break like that, going on the first frame, when he

missed so many pots. And that will really fill him with confidence.

Interesting match we have got here now. Yes, that is one thing you have

to say about Joe Perry - he does not lack bottle. He stroked in a lovely

green which could have gone wrong. REFEREE: Foul, and a miss. Joe

Perry, four. That was such a hard shot for him to

attempt. He merely fluked that one. But he

came right across it. A lot of movement there. He put his shoulder

into that one. I'm sure Judd is now thinking of

getting high side on the blue, in order to go into the reds. He

normally hits these harder than just about every other professional on

the tour. Let's see how hard he hits this one... Yes. Bludgeoned.

You're right, Nick. He does hit them hard. He will settle for that. And

he freed up the black, all in one. He has got to hit the pink foot in

the face when playing it at pace, like that. -- full in the face.

One thing is for certain - he has not let the disappointment of the

last frame get him down. This has been very confident indeed. He has a

couple of choices of reds here. Well... Everything was going so well

and looking so good. That is all because he was concentrating on the

cannon with the black. Just took his eyes off the red.

Fortunately this time for Judd, he has not left his opponent an easy

red. But if Joe does get an opportunity, given the position of

the reds at the moment, it would be similar to the task which he faced

in the last frame. And here is that chance. Another

safety error from Joe has had a bit of a smile. I

think he has but a chance of a red, but it is not the one he was hoping

to be able to play. Judd has been very fortunate here, I

think. You would have thought he had left his opponent right in amongst

them. He is looking at the thin red down

the cush. This must be really tight. The one to the right of the pink I

think definitely does go. But he obviously does not like that option.

He would have to screw back for the blue off it.

Good effort. You have to consider with where Judd left the cue ball,

that he left nothing easy on. That is quite unbelievable. He

played the worst safety shot you could possibly imagine and he has

got away with it. The very next shot, he is smack in amongst the

balls himself. Very fortunate, it has to be said.

It is incredible how many little half kicks there are out there at

the moment. Nearly every shot. There is another one. Short on the blue.

But just needs the blue and one more red to take a 2-1 lead. And that one

has rebounded rather quickly. This is frame ball.

Well, it will not matter about the red. The break of 35, in combination

with his earlier 46, takes him into a 2-1 lead.

We thought earlier, Terry, that when Trump missed a red but it might

prove crucial. Yes, he played a safety shot very badly, and covered

about four different pots. Joe missed the red, and Judd Trump went

on to win it. But he is always pressurising his opponent, you have

to say that. He is more aggressive than most of the players on the

circuit, Judd Trump. And that in itself puts you under pressure. You

feel you cannot leave him anything because he will go for it. And on

his day, he gets most of them. And he is a cool customer as well. His

face does not portray too much emotion. Whereas if we could see Joe

Perry at the moment, shaking his head. He will be a bit annoyed with

himself? Yes, Joe has been around for a while. He has got a few mental

scars, like all the players. But Judd has just got a presence out in

the arena, for somebody so young. He has just got that. The way he walks

around the table. He does not show much expression. The shots he plays,

the exceptional clearances he does. He is very, very exciting to watch.

Even for the professional players, he is different. We had him in the

studio a couple of days ago and said, it has been a couple of years

since you have listed a ranking title. Do you feel the pressure? No,

not at all, he said. I will win one sooner rather than later. Joe Perry

has perhaps gone under the radar slightly this week. But he is a guy

who is inside the top ten, he knows his way around? He has had a very

good few years now, Joe. He has had his ups and downs. He has been in

the top 16 many times, and out again. But he has been having some

really good results. He won the PTC, ?100,000 prize, which will have

helped his confidence. Outcomes Judd Trump, with that hard to read

expression! Leading 2-1. So, Joe Perry trying to level the

match up. This time, Judd Trump does not pot

Joe Perry 's break. It was very similar red.

Instantly now, the top players, this is quite good pack to go into, from

the black. Push the cue ball through. He knows he has got a red

up by the blue. Should it be necessary. That is the shot he has

played. He has played it very well. The referee just asking for a moment

to replace the pink, which will have to go behind its own spot in a

direct line with the top cushion. Joe has left an angle here to go

into the bunch of reds. The problem is, I can see two reds which could

go dangerously near the corner pocket. I don't know if Joe has seen

that. Whether he will not bother going into the reds. Here it is...!

Goodness me! It is all right now though.

It seems to me you just cannot play the ball with any pace, otherwise

you're getting a kick was some kind of kick effect. I don't know if it

is static or what it is. He is getting the long tackle out

again. If the red was not so close to the middle pocket, he would be

able to just play this as a normal shot. This always makes it a bit

more hard, even though the red is close to the corner pocket.

You would have to say, the reds are in perfect position now. Joe Perry

will be very upset with himself if he does not make a winning

contribution from here. Certainly he should put himself in a very, very

good position. All about this shot. He is taking these very nicely. He

is a lovely cubist. But again, he played that with a little bit of

pace. And once again, the ball lifted off the bed of the table. He

is a lovely cueist. But look at that bounce again there. He will be

expecting to win this frame now with this visit.
