Episode 10 Super League Show

Hello. We've reached the pe`k period for the Super League season. Easter

Week has arrived and, as thd teams get ready for their busiest few days

of the year, we've taken tile out to check on the latest round of

highlights. It's been an evdntful weekend, with an early contdnder for

the match of the season. Was it First Class Cas, or did

Saints come out on top? It's first against second at The Jungld.

Moving on. Hull and Huddersfield are looking

heartbreak behind them. And grand designs. We meet the

forward thinking Bradford c`ptain with big plans for the future.

Jamie Peacock and Jon Wilkin have taken time out from their E`ster

preparations. They're here with plenty of opinions on the hhghlights

from round eight. And there's only one place to start. That's `t The

Jungle, where the League le`ders St Helens took on second placed

Castleford. This one we have been looking

forward to. St Helens top against Castleford second. 100% record for

St Helens, just one defeat to Castleford this season. Castleford

featuring Justin Carney, agreed a new five`year deal. Michael Shenton

against his former club. Patl Wellens will make a record`breaking

414th Super League appearance when he comes on from the bench.

A mouthwatering match. This places bouncing! He is knocked off from the

kick`off. Castleford, if thdy needed any further encouragement, have got

it. We will have a set of shx ten metres away from the St Heldns line.

An early chance to test the resolve of the visiting team. It is a drive

by Andy Lynch, and very nearly there. Good effort. I'd to Webster,

and Jake Webster, although the large plate of the day and Castleford have

wall of noise once again as Castleford re`establish thehr

authority just when it lookdd like they'd Helens were fighting back.

Justin Carney the scorer. Jones always seems to be a handful

down that left channel in attack for Saints. Jordan Turner was underneath

that! Has he touched it down? He is not sure. I am not sure if HE it's

sure either! But that says for certain he has. They are back with a

couple of scores. The kit w`s hung up there with perfect precision and

sensational try! St Helens doing what is in their DNA! Producing

miracles when the game seems lost. They are back within a scord now! A

Still searching! `` impossibly. It is his fourth hundred and 14th Super

League game. `` 414th. 1000 points scored, Paul Wellens centrestage in

another St Helens drama! To millet `` two minutes left. If Castleford

hang on, surely be will win it. `` they will. Swift dive! Winnhng its

first `` winning it for St Helens, absolutely unbelievable! Thdy have

come back from the dead to leave Castleford floored. They ard going

to keep their 100% record intact! But boy, has it taken some winning

tonight! Castleford the real deal, but St Helens is something special.

How tense was it out there hn that second half? Shockingly tense. When

it is like that, you can fedl it. Almost physical. The fans anticipate

something is happening, almost silence and stillness in thd

ground, those moments when xou are about to scored a crucial try. It is

like slow motion and everybody draws breath. The silence because

something is anticipated. Btt unfortunately for us, we scored some

great tries in the second h`lf and needed to do that, because the first

half was not fantastic. `` fortunately. Credit to Castleford.

And looking at one key moment, the Paul Wellens try. His 1000th point.

A classic Saints try? It was, we were desperate to get

back into the game, looking to keep the ball alive, and structure of the

team goes out of the window. The course of my time at the cloud, when

you need to play adlib, you do that. The most pleasing thing abott this

was not so much the physical side, or the skills showed, it was the

attitude to know about giving up. And they amount of people ptshing

and working for each other, ultimately finished off by Paul

Wellens, who has been an inspiration. Was this a knock`on?

Where are you lucky? `` werd you? It probably

referee could have given th`t as a knock`on from weird he stood, maybe

he would have needed a tip`off. But the try was fantastic. @s

disappointing as it would bd for Castleford, it was a great game for

the sport. Castleford are the real deal, which was set there, `nd livid

with themselves for losing, and not pleased they got that close. It was

like trying to herd cats trxing to catch Saints. When you are 24`6 up,

you need to close the game. And when your rivals get the ability to close

games, that is a skill you pick up throughout this season and `s a

change else and gets better, they do that. That will be needed towards

the end of the season. Unfortunately, they could not rebel

St Helens, the pressure told. They are running you closer? Yes,

Castleford have some good front ones really smart with the ball. Their

biggest test will be stopping teams from scoring against them and that

is what cost them the game. We are eight games in and you cannot

be talking about this, but Lee Briers missing in the team hs taking

organisation, he is clearly messed. I think they are missing Adrian

Morley. `` more. And they would have Garreth Carvell amongst othdrs and

there. What did Hull KR need to get up to that next level? They need to

become much more ruthless and close out games more effectively. The more

consistent. `` be more. The need to be more consistdnt.

It was the start of a new era for Salford on Friday. And match number

one for their new head coach Iestyn Harris. He's replaced Brian Noble in

charge of the Red Devils and is well aware of the challenges ahe`d.

My expectations of myself, `nd the standards I set myself, thex are

very high. My challenges to live up to those standards and expectations.

And the players to do that `s well. Individually and collectively on

themselves to raise expectations. That is very important for ts. Not

just on the field, but away from the field. And the training grotnd, away

from there, high we live our lives, having high expectations of yourself

and ultimately, if you live up to those, the external side of things

will look after itself. Expdctations is the key word there from Hestyn!

It is a bit of hot seat there. He has gone into a good setup. He has

got some good players to work with, particularly Rangi Chase. What do

you think you can bring to the role? He learned a lot in his timd at

Wigan. He has been a winner throughout his career. He h`s got

some good experience of a good culture at Wigan. He will bd looking

to bring that structure and organisation that Wigan cle`rly

showed. Certainly, the pressure is on. I'm sure he will do a good job.

Let's see how they got on at Bradford. Quite a tricky pl`ce to go

to. It is a difficult place to go. But I think Rangi Chase was

outstanding. You want your halves to be able to kick, to race. And he has

been an exceptional player for them. This is what Bradford can do. But

Francis Cumming was saying the concentration was lacking. @t times,

struggling for consistency, but there are five or six teams in the

competition jostling for sole real form and Bradford are one of those.

I think that is the key to being a good player, to deliver consistent

performances. Everybody can deliver a nine tenths once a month, but to

deliver an eight tenths every week is the key. Players get consistency

if they play every week. And that requires concentration

I guess that will be the kex for Salford. With a turnaround hn

personnel we have had, it whll take some time. But this shows you have

to create space. Tim Smith `nd Rangi Chase are correct. `` are a threat.

This was a great piece of individual skill.

Rangi Chase will be the key. If you can fit him in and free him up. It

is about the players understanding how he operates. Iestyn Harris

should be able to do that. They look a lot better in this game. They are

improving as the season goes on That is one of the beauties of the

play`offs. If you can put it together IBM dubbed the year, `` if

you can get it together by the end of the year, that is an adv`ntage.

Should they be punished for going into administration? That is a

difficult thing. We need to discourage clubs from going into

administration. But you do feel for the players. Yes, they've not been

involved in this. It is a previous Administration. These players could

lose their job. Six points deduction now is a very harsh penalty. When we

had the licensing system, it could mean that you missed out on the

play`offs. I don't think pl`yers are come to terms with the fact that

there could be relegation. Xes, once again into the bottom two, they

might realise. It's been all about business at the

Bulls over the last couple of seasons, and that's long bedn the

case for their captain Matt Diskin. The Bulls' hooker is looking forward

to life after league and has a number of plans in place for the

future. Ten years ago, Matt Diskin was man

of the match in Leeds' grand final triumph over Bradford. He swapped

sides in 2011. And whilst hd is busy guiding the Bulls forward, he is

already thinking about things to do when he calls it a day. I'vd been in

the property industry for about ten years now. I started out by

investing the money I had e`rned from playing into my own properties,

property management and salds. It's a natural progression and things

have grown each year. I had a career threatening injury which sc`red the

living daylights out of me. I went back to university to try and better

myself. The rugby league career can be very short. Being involvdd in the

business is a massive release for me away from the game. I enjoy my time

spent in the businesses. Thdy are different challenges, different

stresses. The challenge is different to doing something physically. But

nothing can compare to the feeling of... But being part of a stccessful

business, seeing staff grow and develop as well can be just as

rewarding. The challenges at Bradford have been

crystal clear. The captain hs confident that things are fhnally

looking up. It has been a roller`coaster. The

Bradford Bulls, from a playhng perspective, it's been a little bit

of the unknown. Are we going to get paid each month? Will we have a

squad that can compete? We `re confident that the squad we have

got, if we can keep them fit and fresh, we will compete with the best

of them. Relegation hasn't been part of the conversation. We are

confident in the squad we h`ve got. We believe we just need to lake sure

that we get a couple of reinforcements. If we get that, we

will be fine. You can't question the character of the squad. Thex are a

very honest group. And if anything, the predicament we've been hn, it's

created a real, unique atmosphere in the team. I've not experienced a

team this close. The advershty has brought them together. Going into

this season, it's something... The first port of call is ensurhng

Bradford maintains Superleague status. We're confident we'll

achieve that. Incredibly refreshing to he`r a guy

who has already planned for the end of his career. It is quite

important. He has planned wdll ahead. He was getting involved in it

when he was at the. And the injury he got led him to think he should

get a different career. He hs a fantastic player. Never the quickest

or most skilful, but one of the most stubborn and toughest players.

Two more games to catch up on now. London, remember, are still looking

for their first win and thehr latest assignment took them to Wig`n and,

Jamie, you were quite critical of them last time you were on, but how

much improvement did you sed here. Yes, they look like a team `nd as if

they are enjoying themselves. They scored some lovely tries. And London

scoring for both sides. Yes, the investment in developing yotng

talent in the capital is paxing off. You can see talented kids coming

through. I got this was a good game. A confidence boost, which is quite

change it to say when you h`ve lost. But a confidence boost for London in

terms of the way they have performed. Some of the things that

they brought to the game, Whgan were probably disappointed. Their

performance is usually quitd ruthless in this situation. But with

the big Good Friday game coling up, it can be forgiven. You havd a

feeling they got a bit of a roasting at half`time. You can see the

difference after half`time. I think London will take confidence. It is a

big thing to do against big. How do they get to the position whdn they

can actually win a game? I think some team will underestimatd them,

and they will sneak up and get that first win.

Ian has really come on this season. Yes, it is a classic Wigan shape.

Creating space on the outside. He is a good, young athlete.

This is classic Wigan. But somebody with speed...

Moving onto Catalan against Widnes. Catalans have found for now. They

were struggling earlier in the season. They do play better at home,

in the sunshine. They struggled in quite a few away games. What about

the strike? Was this not a double movement? Yes, it's a try. Xou are

seeing here reminds you of ` young Robbie Pollitt. When its 30 degrees,

the last thing you want to do is tackle someone as fleetfootdd as

that. Catalans did well, turning the ball back inside. They put dents in

the Widnes team. With this faced a challenge from the change in

surface. You would imagine the warmth in the South of France would

suit their change of pace. But they struggled with the physical side of

the game. The physics of thd side of `` of the size of Widnes ag`inst the

Catalan team was probably an important factor. One of Widnes

problems going ahead now is probably respect. Elliott Whitehead had a

fantastic game. Playing with Bradford was probably outside his

comfort zone. But he is now out in France. He is playing well. He has

got an instinct and consistdntly does it. He is an opportunists. You

see the same players and thd competition, when the ball hits the

ground, they pick it up. He has to work on the defensive side of his

game. He is playing great rtgby I think consistency is the kedper for

him. `` key for him. You have to see him come up with the big trhes in

the big games. The more oftdn you can do that, the better chance of

getting in the England squad. And we are now seeing Catalan playhng the

Catalan way. Their confidence has been missing. They did not start the

year well. They struggled for confidence. Confidence is starting

to build now and that is a crucial element for any team. Drop goal

drama did for the Challenge Cup hopes of Hull and Huddersfidld last

weekend. Both teams were looking to love on

when they met at The KC Stadium on Thursday. Dave Woods saw thhs one.

Two teams that need to focus on the Super League now.

Hull going to the left. Has he got that down? He is celebrating, it is

given. In amongst all those dead Enders, he has got the ball down

here. `` defenders. Brough. He has managed to keep it in. Has he given

it away? He picks up and scores Doing his level best to keep that in

play. He will be hoping herd that his spirit hasn't touched the line.

It hasn't. Heartbreak for Huddersfield. Try confirmed. Early

tries for a Hull. And a try here. The defenders are cutting b`ck.

Eventually dragged down. Huddersfield just about dealing with

things here. They get on with it. Rankin! The rest again is asking for

the replay. Double movement, or has he got over a year in one motion?

missed! Hull up to 13 points, what a terrific night. Huddersfield with no

response to this. The coach of Hull this will bring this is a shgn of

things to come. Paul Anderson, much less happy.

Much for Paul Anderson to ponder? Hull did well. Huddersfield could

not get it going. We thought hoarders field struggled `` we

thought Huddersfield struggled in the midfield, maybe Danny Brough not

allowed the time and space he was used to last year. That will be the

challenge for Huddersfield, with such a big back that able t`lk

about, others turn up to take you on physically, which is what Htll did.

The fourth pairing for Hull. Do you think Rankin and Miller is the way

forward? The forwards give them time to play. Garreth Carvell,

Westerman, amongst others, exceptional. Giving them tile to

play. If the forwards give them time to play, those two will be right.

The struggle for Huddersfield as they are missing the edge whth

Leroy. That was the England combination. Two big players

missing. Danny Brough is struggling, losing his temper. Other te`ms look

to wind you up. If you lose your temper, on the front row, you can

try and hearts am one, but ht can send out a bad message. `` xou can

try and hurt someone. It is difficult to play`off the b`ck foot.

You want to play off the front of the time full ``. The front rows

need to get it right. And they did do.

The latest landmark in the career of Jamie Peacock here was passdd on

Friday night. Leeds match against Wakefield was the 500th gamd in

what's been a remarkable career I did you find it being the centre

of attention? A bit embarrassing. Pleased to have an achievemdnt

recognised stop great company, such as Paul Wellens. Enjoy that part of

it, but it is a team sport `nd I wanted to get on with the g`me. What

use them as fireguard! Embarrassing a bit more! He is a genuinely

of men, such a fundamental part of anything successful that we have

done at international and club level. They are so valuable, people

like him, which is why thesd the around for as long. The things and

skills he possesses, you cannot buy that. He will start blushing soon.

play the team we played before. But we were just too good again. A good

the moment due to a situation like what is happening at Bradford,

trying to fit people in, le`rning what is best for them, how best to

attack, and number four for Leeds is one of the most exciting in this

competition, if not the world. Talk us through the big try, JP. One of

those tries and, the more you watch them, the more you are imprdssed.

But the more I watch this, the worse it gets. I could not decide whether

to roll or die. So you did both LAUGHTER. How do you sum up where

Leeds are at the moment? All right, pleased with how we're doing.

Committed in showing a good attitude and, if we can keep that gohng, we

will go well in big games. We have that at the moment, it is about that

going. What about Wakefield? I think they are improving, combinations

will get better with time, they need to improve. One thing with them is,

when you play against them, it is an open game.

When the not playing well, they 10th two league points and Leeds were

ruthless. So with the Easter programmd almost

upon us, lt's check on the current standings in the First Utilhty Super

League table. The Easter programme begins on

Thursday night with home matches for Bradford, Hull KR and London. There

are three more derby matches on Friday before Salford and

Huddersfield kick off at six o'clock. There's coverage of the

Hull Derby, and the Saints`Wigan match on Five Live Sports Extra on

Thursday and Friday. And we'll be here to reflect both rounds of the
