Derby County v Manchester United The FA Cup

For a brief period in the 1970s, Derby County were the top team in

English football. Brian Clough was the figurehead. Manchester United's

dominance lasted rather longer under Sir Alex Ferguson. But for both

clubs, the old world shadows hang heavy in the air.

We go out to make you and I want to come to football matches.

20 titles in 26 years. Words that for a generation or more have just

gone together. Manchester United - Champions. If anything is going to

win the division this season, it is character. And I've got it.

It does not mean the end. I will be able to now enjoy watching them.

Time might be up for Louis van Gaal. True perspective is required after

another turbulent week. It almost feels like Louis van Gaal's

Manchester United career has entered Fergie time. They face a tricky tie

against one of the top sides in the Championship. It is 12 years since

United lifted the trophy. Derby's only success was back in 1946.

Welcome to the Ipoh stadium, where I am joined by Alan Shearer, Peter

Schmeichel and Robbie Savage. Alan Shearer, I think it is fair to say,

after Louis van Gaal himself said this week that the United team is

failing the fans, something has to change. Yet there have been

rumblings from small sections of Old Trafford this season, because the

football has been nowhere near good enough. But for the first time last

week, whole of Old Trafford let him know. Then the owners and everybody

have to take note. That's why tonight is a massive game for

Manchester United and Louis van Gaal. They cannot get beaten. Peter,

what would you like to see from Manchester United? I would love to

see a win. And in that win I would love to see some goals, good play,

exciting tricks by players. You're dreaming now! It hasn't happened

this season. I understand fully the reaction of the fans. I myself have

felt very, very frustrated from the games that we have seen them play.

We have been talking about it for weeks - is this his last game? If

Man United go out today, I honestly cannot imagine what the newspapers

are going to look like tomorrow, but also the pressure on the owners of

the football club, the guys that run the club, the manager and the

players, is going to be like. It is going to be really terrible. It is a

big night for Manchester United and also in many ways for Derby County,

who not on a good one, either. Paul Clement is also under the cosh, so

to speak. Is this an opportunity for some kind of reboot? It is, it is

his worst run as a manager, only two points out of 15 in the league. He

can go out tonight against a United team which is there for the taking.

Do that and the crowd will get behind them again. Let's get the

team news with Dan Walker. Let's start with the visitors, Manchester

United. There is the real David de Gea. Here is our animated one. Two

changes from the game against Southampton. One of those is in the

back four, with a change there. Lingard, who was on loan at Derby

last season, alongside Mata in the middle three. Martial, playing

behind the lone front man, Wayne Rooney. And Derby are unchanged from

their 4-1 defeat away to Burnley in the Championship. Keogh and Shackell

have been ever present in the league so far this season. Jacob

Butterfield was at Manchester United as a young man and is a Manchester

United fan. And the familiar name of Ince up front. Blackman still

looking for his first goal for Derby since moving from Reading at the

start of this month. Derby's promotion challenge has faltered in

recent weeks. They were beaten by Burnley on Monday, making it five

without a win. They are now fifth in the table. A tough few weeks for

Paul Clement, who replaced Steve McClaren in the summer. It is his

first managerial role after coaching at some of the world is biggest

clubs. He has worked with the likes of Ronaldo, Bale and Zlatan. Now, in

another career highlight, he gets to speak to damn.

Paul, Darfur talking to us. You know what it is like to win this

competition, with Chelsea. How do you get the batter United tonight?

It is about focusing on ourselves. We have come off the back of a

couple of difficult results. Our performance against Burnley in the

last game was actually very encouraging, even though we did lose

it 4-1. We played very, very well in the first half. An own goal, two

deflections and a penalty changed the way we were feeling. This is a

one-off game. We hope that in front of our fans, we can send them home

smiling. There has been talk about your opposite number being under

pressure tonight - but you have been on a difficult run as well? Yes,

there is a lot of speculation always in the press about Manchester

United. That is the reality of being a manager of a really big club. I

felt that in an assistant role when I was working with Carlo at Chelsea

and PSG and Real Madrid. He is certainly will be used to that kind

of pressure, all the other clubs he has managed as before. I am sure he

can turn it around at that club. It is a huge opportunity not just for

derby but for the players you have chose in tonight? Yes, it is a

fantastic opportunity. Fourth round of the FA Cup, a very special

competition. Playing at home against arguably one of the biggest clubs in

world football. We are looking forward to it. Enjoy the game.

We are all looking forward to it. I think it is fair to say, he has had

a decent amount of cash to spend, Robbie? Nearly ?25 million, which is

an awful lot of money for the Championship. In your first job as a

manager, you want to get a good job, which this is, and be backed by your

chairman. Look at those signings. I feel some of these players have

playing because of the price tag. Bradley Johnson started very well.

?6 million, an awful lot of money. But I think there is a case now that

these players are keeping their places because of the money paid for

them. Jeff Hendrick is out of the team. He is very, very good player.

Republic of Ireland international. And I think he should be getting a

start. But because of the money spent, maybe the manager thinks, I

have got to play these players. It is interesting. You get number twos

who go around clubs. You hear it in the game, it is not really the

manager, it is the number two who does all the work. But this is a

good first opportunity? Fantastic first opportunity. It is so

different as a number two. I had one of the best, at Blackburn, Ray

Harford. He was superb at the job. When he went into the hot spot at

Blackburn, he struggled. It is totally different. Sometimes you

have to be the nice guy. As the number one, you have to be the nasty

guy. That is what he is finding. But it is a fantastic football club. It

has a hell of a budget, the biggest in the Championship. They need to go

up this season. One of Derby's key men this season has been a

midfielder whose first taste of football came at Manchester United.

Ivan Gaskell met Tom Ince. This is Thomas Ince, midfielder.

The name is linked inherently with Manchester United and the FA Cup,

and here you are carrying on the family tradition? It has been a

heavy name to carry but there is no-one more proud than myself to

have an old man who has done so much in the game. I am trying to

replicate that and make my name in the game. I suppose it is time for

me to take the name on. If this is to be Manchester United's season in

Premier League, FA Cup or both, it will surely be Paul Ince's season,

too. You are 24 on Friday, so happy birthday. You have had quite a

number of clubs for a young guy. Is this now the place for you to settle

down? The first day I walked in, it was like I had been here all the

time. The lads were brilliant. I always knew that if I could enjoy my

football and perform, then the goals would come. What are the players

saying after recent results? It is always difficult after getting so

close in the last couple of years. Liverpool will say, he is at Derby

again, doing the same thing. The fans expect a lot, but none more so

than us ourselves. We are a team who if were hit form we feel we can

cause teams problems. The transformation from self-confessed

East End tearaways to family man of Cheshire could hardly have been more

rapid. Oh, no! That tracksuit. My mum is not going to be happy with

that! Manchester United have taken the

lead through Paul Ince! My dad was good mates with rain. He used to

lodge with us for six months. I shared a bedroom with rain, so that

is one of my claims to fame. People compare me but in a way I am a

different player. Do not get as many red cards as him. For me, he has set

a bar for me. He has set a challenge. Can I reach it all can I

go past it? I am looking to go past it, that is for sure. Definitely one

for the future, young Thomas Ince giving dad a toasting.

Good stuff. If only we had someone in the studio who knew what it might

be like to have a family member following in the footsteps of

Manchester legend. If only! But it is interesting. It must add

pressure? It is really difficult. We have seen this over and over again.

Any Dalglish's son struggled. So many of them. The problem is that

they will always be compared. With my son we have had many

conversations about how to deal with that, how to get through that period

and make a name for yourself. Tom is touching on that as well. The

comparison will never, ever go away. It is really difficult. I suppose it

is a rare son that your son has Abu sleep eclipsed you... -- has

obviously eclipsed you... It is nice when it happens! I can only speak

for Kasper, but it has been a very, very long road for him. He had to

step down from Man City down to League Two, to restart his career,

only because he was my son. I am sure that if he had not had my

surname, he would have had a better chance. I think the same goes for

Tom Ince. It is difficult. Once you get that name you think you are

getting something which is a finished product, but it takes time

for any player. I think he has showed potential but he has now

found a level where he has got to get out of it.

season. Everyone was looking for him to kick on. Take your career to the

next step. Very, very much left-footed. We will see him on the

right-hand side tonight - and this is what he will want to do all night

long. Borthwick-Jackson at left back will know that and I'm sure he will

try to show him down the line will know that and I'm sure he will

right hand side. But he is dangerous, IF you allow him to come

inside. Derby's style, in many ways, Robbie, it is quite similar to

Manchester United. A lot of possession, slow build-up, should be

a thriller, shouldn't it?! In the first five games of the year, they

had the most possession in the league but did not win a game. Now,

they have not won in five and they have had more possession than the

opposition. So maybe tonight, Dubai to playing it up early to Chris

Martin, get runners like Ince and black man of him and maybe just

change your style at it. Defence is probably the one area Louis van Gaal

has not had to worry about this season. United have the second-best

defensive record in the Premier League. Up front, it has been a

different story. The pressure is building. The fans

are shouting every week... It is abysmal, embarrassing.

This man has got to go. There are even red United Jose Mourinho

scarves on sale outside. Now, the results are not good enough. I know

that. That is not any reason to sack me. The players themselves look

bored. There is just nothing happening in the game. Boos ring

around the ground once more. Did you offer to resign after Southampton as

has been reported? I have not mentioned that ever. It is now the

third time already that I have been sacked and I am still sitting here

for you. Good to talk to you. You have come

out fighting this week - do you think this has been the toughest

period you have had in your career as a manager? No, I had always

periods, in every club, so. Not new. What is new is that stories are made

up by the media. And you can write everything without taking

responsibility for what you are writing. We spoke at the start of

the season and you said you loved the job of being a manager at a big

club. I wonder whether it is hard to enjoy it at times like this? Of

course, because every human being shall always be influenced by their

environment. And that environment is influenced by the media. What do you

need to see from your team tonight? That is more important, this

question! We got there in the end! OK, good! I hope that they shall

perform what we have trained. And that they show also a good team

spirit. But I want to see and I want to see the confidence of the

training sessions. That is very important. Because then you can win

a game. When you don't play the game as you have trained, then it shall

illustrate United's struggle under van Gaal. It is their lowest number

of points after 23 Premier League games. It is their worst scoring

rate in the Premier League error as well. It does not really bode well.

They have also struggled against a lower league opposition.

ALAN SHEARER: They got beat if you remember last season in the Capital

One Cup by MK Dons. Middlesbrough this year in the Capital One Cup.

And Sheffield United in this game. That was their only effort. Ironic

applause. The fans are telling him that they do not like it. They are

not enjoying what they are seeing. When you listen to him, he tries to

make you feel guilty for asking the questions which he has to ask.

No-one is lying. This United team, it is not a good team. They got out

of jail in this game. 96th minute, that was. The fact is, they are not

enjoyable to watch, not exciting, not a very good team. So, eventually

the owners or whoever, they have to make a decision. That's why they

cannot get beat tonight. I think van Gaal was trying to say that some of

the stories in the media, the fact that he has been sacked, and he

clearly hasn't. No, that is part of being Manchester United manager. I

think there is a very significant thing at the beginning of the

question, that he says, it has been like that everywhere I have been. It

is that clear misunderstanding, that he thinks he is at any club. He is

not. He is at Manchester United. It is different. Not only are you

expect to win but you are expected to win in style. I don't think he

has got bad. Robbie you are saying, he has to go - is that where you

stand heavily a lot of my friends are Manchester United fans and they

are bored to tears when they watch Man United at Old Trafford.

Shocking. We have heard from in studio, and it is time now for the

governor. As soon as you turned up, the rain started coming down! The

guys talking about Manchester United, as a father, what do you

think will happen from Derby's point of view tonight? First of all... I

am proud. It is a great game. The fans are here at in their droves. I

would love Derby to win, Thomas to score a hat-trick. But I can only

dream about those things. What about Manchester United? You played so

many times for them. It is not a good time to be a Manchester United

fan? No, it is not. They have struggled this season. It is also

the way they have been playing. The old Man United teams made with pace,

strength, creating chances. We have not seen it this year. They are very

slow, very methodical. And they are not creating any chances. They are

very, very dependent on Wayne Rooney. We will see you at

half-time! Fantastic atmosphere building here at the eye pro

stadium. Derby have had glory nights in the past, of course. But this is

a tie where they probably think they have got half a chance. They have

got more than half a chance, Gary, and that is what their manager will

be saying to them in the dressing room. Frustrate them for the first

half, sit tight, let's not do anything stupid. And they know the

pressure will grow on Manchester United. That is when the game will

open up. Derby WILL get chances tonight. Do you fancy them to do it

heavily no, I think Man United will win. Peter? I HOPE Man United will

win! And Robbie? I have got to go with Derby. I thought you might.

Good evening, everybody. atmosphere here. One manager has

everything to gain tonight whilst the other might be fearing

everything to gain tonight whilst has everything to lose. Derby have

not been in great form, with two points from five games, seeing them

slip from first to fifth in the Championship. They have not won

since Boxing Day. And they lost 4-1 at Burnley on Monday. But Paul

Clement has picked the same starting XI. He says that as they search for

consistency, he wants to be consistent in his team selection.

Butterfield was released by Manchester United as a 15-year-old.

Nick Blackman is a Salford boy. He also was in the Academy at United

when he was very young indeed. For Manchester United, Matty Darmian has

been added to the injury list, so van Gaal picks Varela at right back.

The Uruguayan has never finished on the winning side for United. Lingard

starts against the club he represented 15 times on loan last

season. It is a raucous, noisy stadium.

Louis van Gaal said yesterday in his press Conference - we cannot lose to

a Championship club. Perhaps he meant, we must not lose to a

Championship club. And he may be right. But you do not manage Bayern

Munich Barcelona, Ajax and the Netherlands without having thick

skin. And boy, has he got thick-skinned? Anthony Taylor is the

referee. Seven years since Manchester United played here. That

was an FA Cup tie as well. Cristiano Ronaldo was on the scoresheet for

United. Robbie Savage was substitute for Derby. The two things may or may

not be connected! Van Gaal has won domestic cups with Ajax, Barcelona

and Bayern Munich. And who knows, he may yet win one with Manchester

United. It is the home side who will get this game under way, kicking

from left to right. What a sight, as 30,000-odd people get ready for

perhaps the biggest occasion which this stadium has seen, in the eight

years they have been out of the top flight. So, here we go. Is this

another night for Manchester United to forget or perhaps a step in the

right direction? We shall see. Here is Marouane Fellaini. And

alongside me this evening is an FA Cup winner with Liverpool, Danny

Murphy. What do you make of this? What an electric atmosphere, first

and foremost. The fans have been well up for it for the last 20

minutes since we have been up here. Just looking at the formation,

Martial is on the left. I do prefer to see him centrally. Added will be

a difficult evening for Cyrus Christie, because Martial for me is

the one player who can make things difficult.

There have not been too many memorable moments in Manchester

positive. Whether central or wide he has generally been the best player

on the pitch. Although Wayne Rooney has come into form in recent weeks,

until the finish. That was a good opportunity for

been a handy early settler for Manchester United.

You wonder how Manchester United's season might have been if De Gea had

signed for Real Madrid in the transfer window. He's a wonderful

goalkeeper. Tom Ince for the first time with the

ball at his feet, cut inside the full-back. Keogh at the back for

Derby County. He broke his nose in three places in a championship match

against Reading three weeks ago. Yet to score for Derby but 13 for

Reading this season. He wasn't involved in the FA Cup semifinal

last season, which Reading lost to Arsenal in extra time. Schneiderlin

for Manchester United. And Derby will have a throw-in.

the mask he wore on Monday and discarded it at half-time. They've

been working to make him a new one. I swear you'll be able to buy

replica masks soon. You may remember it took another

left-back another time to finish on the winning sides for his club, and

that was Gareth Bale. It was ages at Spurs, but he's done alright for

himself. A good opportunity for these young lads. A big game,

hostile atmosphere, TV cameras, these young lads. A big game,

say to the manager, I'm good enough, keep me in.

They do have a lot of defensive injuries at the moment, Manchester

United. Michael Carrick is on the bench, a defensive midfielder

obviously. He's been a huge miss for Manchester United. They do lack

creativity when he doesn't play. Manchester United. They do lack

central strider more often than not. He can play out there but I'm not

tonight to Paddy McNair, who might have played in that position. A

touch of the South American there from Varela, the Uruguayan. He has

shown a willingness to get forward early in this game, good pace, good

energy. Could be a good outlet for Manchester United. With his going

forward it means Nick Blackman is on the back foot. A good start from

Manchester United. I've described him before as a Picasso of a

manager, Louis van Gaal. Some people look at it and see genius and some

people look at it and see all the right bits but in all

people look at it and see all the places. Those who see genius are few

and far between at the moment. Bradley Johnson getting in. Derby

County's throw. Smalling on the spot for Manchester United.

Last couple of games he's been back to his brilliant best, Wayne Rooney.

A much-needed boost for Manchester United. I think he's probably having

his best spell of the season so far. A bit of room here for Schneiderlin

to exchange a pass. Patience from Manchester United. Derby County

working to limit all the angles and make the geometry difficult for

their visitors. Johnson had his pocket picked.

Rooney tries to deflection, but the flag is up. Chasing down another Sir

Bobby Charlton record, Wayne Rooney, having overtaken his England

goal-scoring record, Wayne Rooney is now second in Manchester United's

all-time scoring list. He has 242. At the moment just seven behind the

great man. Good to see him here. Sir Bobby Charlton. It is very

different, number two to number one, the step up. Wherever you've worked,

it is a different ball game when you're the man. You have to deal

with the problems head-on. Confront eights, you can't always be the

middle man. As a manager you have to face that knock on the door when

players aren't happy. Some of those lads on the bench tonight will be

disappointed that he has kept the same 11. There's good competition

for places in this Derby squad. An expectancy around the club, the

supporters, to get out of the championship. A big wage bill.

They've spent good money on players. They are striving for the top flight

for sure. They came very close go seasons again. Extremely unlucky to

for sure. They came very close go authorise Queens Park Rangers in the

play-off final. Really blew their chances of getting back into the

play-offs last season. Only needed a draw against Reading on the final

day of the soon. Wayne Rooney, a magnificent goal! That is a special,

special goal from Wayne Rooney. A wonderful goal. And whether Scott

Carson saw it coming or not, he wasn't going to get anywhere near

that. It is a wonderful Rooney goal, and Manchester United lead at the

iPro. A wonderful strike from Wayne Rooney. Good touch, good run. Just

on-side. It is far too easy, with a man of his quality it is always

going to punish. A brilliant striker. Nothing more than they

deserved. They controlled the match from minute 1. Played with a

confidence that we don't expect and haven't seen too offen from a

Manchester United side. Not one for running down the touchline, the

Dutchman. Never going to see him slide on his knees in the mud. But

that represents a Louis van Gaal celebration. A wonderful goal.

So now confidence at a low ebb after recent

results. They've got to try to get out on the pitch. When United are

knocking it about, occasionally someone can come out midfield and

join Martin. This is the offside decision. Sometimes get those and

sometimes you don't. I would rather admire the wonderful finish he just

prufsed there. A terrific technique. I'm surprised Scott Carson didn't

guess he was going to go in that corner. Not that I'm blaming him,

but sometimes you have to anticipate that brilliance from Wayne or you

are a goal down. United can play this possession game like they

enjoy, without the worry. An inch or two offside or not, it was still a

magnificent finish. Derby County at the moment are

reflecting that Manchester United don't look that weak to them. They

back off. As soon as De Gea gets the ball they drop off. They need to

change that mentality. Especially now they are a goal down, and be

bold enough to go higher up the pitch and make the goalkeeper kick

it. Keogh running into trouble.

Butterfield got there first, to his credit.

Shackell had an unpleasant return on Monday night. Conceded a

Burnley's fourth goal. Derby had played pretty well the first 30

though you are looking at Manchester United and thinking they've lost

perhaps that fear factor. If their big players play well, the

championship side are going to struggle. So far that's the case. I

couldn't agree more. There's been a fear factor from Derby. They didn't

need to have that in their game. Manchester United haven't played

particularly well recently other than probably the Newcastle game.

They key have been on the front foot a little bit more. They dropped off,

gave them possession, gave them the confidence. Martin was offside and

he knew it. Trying to inject pace into proceedings, United trying to

draw it out. That was a decent header. Did well to get above the

full-back. A comfortable save for De Gea. Certainly encouragement for

Derby County and Nick Blackman. It is a decent header, this. That's a

good tactic, as Nick Blackman is a tall lad. It is good he is getting

in the box, closer to Martin. He's been isolated up there on his own. A

good run from Varela. Christie got the shot away.

We are 22 minutes into the game and Derby County fans are applauding in

memory of one of their own. Own. Tom Webb, a big Derby County support

supporter. 22 years old. The referee immediately calling for

assistance here. A clash of heads. Johnson is the man down. They've got

assistance here. A clash of heads. some Premier League experience in

their squad, Derby. The stadium is up to scratch. I gather that work

goes on on the training ground which is already good, but it is being

improved and extended. The Academies and everything else is trying to put

everything in place to get the team over the line. I was surprised that

they let Bradley Johnson go. over the line. I was surprised that

one of the three playing furthest up the pitch and trying to help with

the pressing, but maybe Butterfield could get with him and leave Thorne

to look after Mata. Yes you will become more vulnerable, but it is

the FA Cup confirm you've got to try and win the game. No foul given.

It is still a team that Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs will expect to

win. Schneiderlin needs closing down and

Johnson did that after a heavy touch from the Frenchman.

Even given the number of goals that Wayne Rooney has scored, his will

probably make the show reel. Can't get out, Derby. They are so isolated

that when they win the ball back it is difficult for Martin to keep hold

of the ball and possession goes back. When you are running around,

shuffling left and right, it is hard work, especially with the quality

that Manchester United have. Wayne Rooney dropping in now. Rooney,

couldn't quite find Lingard. Manchester United, it is strange

really, it hasn't been their competition in recent years, the FA

Cup. 2004 was the last time they won it. And there you see the yellow

partition between those who are deep in thought and pondering how their

team can respond and the others who are just enjoying having seen

Manchester United not only score a goal but score a very good goal. It

is their last opportunity to win some silverware. You can see why

he's played a strong team. They look well up for it tonight, for sure.

They might win the Europa League I suppose. But it wouldn't have been

on their list of things to do at the start of the season. Of course.

Here's that goal. It is a brilliant finish. And the man who scored that

goal, Wayne Rooney, trying to get Manchester United moving in pursuit

of a second. Lingard falling dangerously, Keogh did well to get a

head on that. 11 times Manchester United have won

the FA Cup. 11 years since they did. Schneiderlin had possession of the

ball there for at least 11 seconds, twisting and turning, look for a

pass. When the ball comes into your half, you've got to get into

people's faces and make some tackles. Derby look in awe of

Manchester United's quality. There's Greg Dyke, chairman of the

FA. Stepped down from that position in the summer after Euro 2016. The

FA will be looking for a new chairman. I wonder if they'll be

looking for a new manager. You have to hope not, as that would mean

England haven't done very well in France. The Welsh members of our

audience might have a vested interest in England not doing well

in France. Christie tried to pull Martial back

but couldn't get hold of him. Just as well Thorne was covering for

Derby. There's been precious little for the home supporters. They have

had nothing really apart from a Blackman header. They are lacking

confidence, you can see that. Lacking energy. The amount of games

you have to play in the championship, but they've got

players on the bench who can come on and cause problems. I think at the

moment Paul Clement might be thinking of a change this tactics

and formation. At this point it is completely one-way traffic. Really

in control of the game, picking them off at will really. Lingard with

Varela overlapping nicely. A heavy touch from a player who has done

pretty well in the first half of this game. He isn't the biggest. We

saw a little bit of weakness in his game but certainly exciting going

forward. A couple of new signings on his bench. Sitting behind him, from

Blackburn Rovers, and Abdoul Camara joined from a French team.

ahead for Ryan Giggs. I wonder whether he will ultimately have to

Manchester United. I think he is learning his trade. He has done now

a great job, given the opportunity. Martial here, and Rooney... Martial,

shame about that touch, because everything else was precision

execution. What a great move. Good awareness from Mata. Give and go

with Rooney. Just over. That return from Rooney was perfect.

to him, telling him which way to send him. Just trying to cope with

his one on one is a difficult job for any full-back, never mind one

that's been playing in the championship. Martial has been

dispossessed by Blind. He is not the most mobile, he is a good target

man. But if he is isolated and the ball goes up to him, it is very

difficult for him to keep hold of the ball long enough for the other

players to join in. I am sure Paul Clement is recognising that and

having a think about what he can do to change it. That is not to take

away from Manchester United's quality in this first half.

Confident, good movement, rotation. Mata is a very clever player, very

difficult to pick up. I often think if nothing else, David Moyes can say

he left them Juan Mata. Derby County, really struggling to leave a

mark on their visitors. Rooney, holding of Keogh, bringing

Martial into play. Mata furthest forward. Nicely done. Here in all

kinds of space. And it almost came back to Lindegaard. The shot was

blocked by Derby in the end. He has got the free kick, Tom Ince. He

turns 24 tomorrow, Tom Ince. Another good move from Manchester United,

though. Switching the play out wide. Willing runner, Varela.

Only 1-0, though. And Manchester United have had one or two

opportunities where they might have extended that lead. And then it

might have gone into the realms of impossibility for Derby County. But

not yet. Derby have been so worried about trying to keep their shape and

drop off, they have forgotten to get forward and cause some problems. And

Derby have equalised to! Really the first time they have got two or

three people in the United area! And Derby County are level level through

Thorne. Brilliant run forward, that is, from

George Thorne. We have not seen him in an attacking sense yet, but what

a brilliant touch that was, and an even better finish. We have seen the

two superb goals. Talking about forgetting to attack, but when they

do, they look dangerous. And that is a brilliant finish from the

midfielder. Manchester United looked so

comfortable. Not now. That is a ball for Varela to chase, but he will not

reach that. The inquest begins. The whole atmosphere has changed. It was

getting a little bit quiet and passive inside the iPro Stadium. Not

now. He has come from deep, because he has been marking Mata. Fellaini

did not see him coming. The gap between the two centre halves was

too big. But didn't he make the most of it?! Didn't he just.

Now, Paul Clement would be very happy to go in at 1-1. He will know

they have ridden their luck little bit. They could have been 2-0 down.

But they are back in the game now, and that should give them some

confidence. Oh, what a clearance! It was fired into Wayne Rooney, and it

looked like 2-1 Manchester United all day long. But Stephen Warnock

not only made sure Rooney did not score, but he made sure he did not

score himself. Brilliant defending from Stephen Warnock. Last-gasp.

That is going to be a corner. It is that man Martial again. They have

got to double up on him. He is too quick, too strong, too skilful. We

can have another look at Stephen Here it is. This is the scale I am

talking about with Martial. As soon as he gets you one-to-one... Warnock

spots the danger and somehow he manages to clear it.

It has hep -- all changed a bit, hasn't it? Seldom does he express

anything more than mild irritation or very mild pleasure. In public,

It is Derby finishing the half strongly. Good effort from Blackman!

And he was not far away. Well, has got a brilliant strike on him.

Coming in off that right side. I have seen him do that so many times.

Did not quite get it as sweetly as he would like. Much better end to

the half than it was at the start. Chris Martin fought the headlines

improvement has been amazing. I saw him in his first training session at

half-time. Well, he will be delighted. He will be happy that

they have got the equaliser. I think he will be a little bit disappointed

at the performance. He would probably have expected a bit more.

up for a very interesting second 45. As we anticipated, an absolute

thriller. It has been entertaining. I was really worried for Derby. I

was thinking, come on, guys, believe in yourself. This is Manchester

United in name, not Manchester United from years ago. Have a bit of

belief, give yourselves a chance. It was a fantastic goal from Rooney.

But credit Derby, shifted everyone up the pinch pitch ten yards, the

defence the midfield, and they have got rewarded in the end. They have

only ever lost once took teams from lower divisions in the FA Cup,

Manchester United. To be honest I do not really see a big fence between

the teams. First 20 minutes, a lot of possession for United. But it

feels like someone has to step up and do something out of the

ordinary. That is Rooney, or Martial. The one time when the three

of them, with Mata, they combined, it nearly ended up with a fantastic

goal. For Derby, I think they have played Manchester United well. They

started off two banks of four, made it really difficult for Man United

to get through. Unfortunately for Derby they conceded a goal.

Individual mistake, as we will see. From that point on they had to step

further forward. Manchester United to be honest have not been able to

deal with that when they stepped forward. In many ways I suppose

Martial was getting it down the left a few times. He had the one

opportunity early on. It was kind of similar to the goal itself. Alan

said earlier about United being so deep in the opening 25 minutes. The

back four playing together, they have played together for the last

four months, but they have got to get out to that 18 yard line. The

two most dangerous players on the pitch for United are Rooney and

Martial. Martial should score here. That was the warning sign. It was.

Once again, deep, but United picked them off brilliantly. It was a

superb finish from Rooney. He is just offside, two or three inches,

yes, but he is offside. But you cannot take anything away from that.

The goalkeeper has got absolutely no chance. Look how deep they were

again, though. They were just waiting for United to score. So

deep! That is the most animated I have seen him this season! He was

Mourinho like! Almost! We mentioned it a couple of times, that Derby

have sat off and let them... You have got some examples? It is the

belief, they have got to believe in themselves. This is not a brilliant

Manchester United team. This is the average position of the Derby County

players. Not many in the Manchester United have. And this is what

happens. When they win the ball, Martin is isolated. So he has got to

hold onto it until someone comes to support him. Eventually there is

nobody there. But after 37 minutes, this is what happens. Someone is now

behind him, Tom Ince. There is another runner into the box, George

Thorne. And it is a fantastic finish. And that is what Derby have

got to do, they have got to show more belief. I have got to have a

little look at Smalling here. He has got no place in chasing that ball.

That leaves the hole for Thorne to run into. Once he loses the header,

he has to go back and left the left-back deal with it. This has

been their downfall. It is individual mistakes. They are not as

solid as the statistics show. As soon as they get under pressure, it

is small mistakes in every single game, and that for me was one of

them. Derby have got to have the belief that they can beat this

Manchester United teenager it is only the second time in the last

nine games that Manchester United have scored a goal in the first

half. At times there was a lack of insight -- incisiveness? When they

get the ball, three or four touches, and then give the ball to Derby

County. It is a little bit like and then give the ball to Derby

instinct is to pass it back. But the pressure which has been put on them

in the last pressure which has been put on them

actually go up and entertain, they look like they are not used to it. I

have never seen Manchester United this sloppy with their passing.

Never, ever. We have been used to seeing players like Paul Scholes,

who never missed a pass, Roy Keane, would feel players who can actually

pass the ball. But it is like they have no confidence when they go

forward. A lot of people lay the blame with Louis van Gaal. If his

players cannot pass the ball, that is their fault, surely. Who bought

them? He did not buy all of them. If Schneiderlin is passing like he is,

he has got to track his runner as well. You were right about Smalling.

that, they almost got a second. They did, and with players like Rooney,

you have always got a chance. Fantastic defending from Derby.

to be in that position more often. For me, he tracks too far back. So

the distance between him and that position is too far. It is too many

yards to run either with the ball without the ball. If he started

right on the line of that back four... Forward

was so happy for my boys. They did it, they did it together. I still

get goose bumps. And then they ask me, hey, you have to go up as well!

You see, I was not there! Are, OK. Chairman and coach embrace.

Everything was OK! Yes, that was a fantastic day. You have got to love

open very sharply, their football was good. Not a lot of chances. And

typically, the goal came from a great player, Wayne Rooney. Great

finish. Super goal. But we stuck at it. And funnily enough it was

probably the only time we really put some passing together. And all of a

sudden we created a chance. Chris Martin, great chest on it, turned,

put it over the centre half. And Thorne's first touch was what really

made it. Paul, they always give the opposition opportunities? Yes, we

have seen in the Premier League this season, defensively they are not

great. They have never really had a settled sides defensively. You

always get a chance against them. That was proven. Derby for me

started off giving them too much respect, standing off them. You have

to engage at some time and get Beausejour the players. That is how

Wayne Rooney got his first goal - they stood off him, let him turn.

But they got the goal, which gave them a bit more belief that they can

go on and win the game now. This lot here are now desperate for the

second half. Alan Shearer said, believe! And that goal has made the

difference, do you think, Roy? Yes, I think we have got to push a bit

higher up the pitch. What Paul is saying, if we are defending

constantly on the edge of our box, United will always create a chance.

And with Rooney, he can do that. So we have got to push and engage a bit

further up the field and believe in ourselves. We showed in that little

spell, those last ten minutes, what we can do. And if we do that we can

cause them problems. Belief is clearly the word of the night.

I would imagine Paul Clement said to them, believe in yourselves, show

some character, get higher up the pitch, try and win the game, don't

be scared. They have certainly started the second half in a much

better frame of mind. Just think about the new players who

have come in here, Danny, I am not saying you have lots, but you have

made a few moves here and there - how long does it take to settle in

and understand the team dynamics? The referee is getting his card out

here. That is Stephen Warnock, he'll have his name put on the back of it.

It was a bit rash. Putting your foot in, a competitive game. You have to

show people you mean business. Too many periods in the first half where

they let United have touch after touch.

It is a good question you ask. I think it is always difficult in

January. A nice interchange in behind Warnock, who again... The

final touch, not necessarily, we saw Martial as well.

He has shown promise, hasn't he? He has. Just a poor touch. When you

move in the summer it is easy because you go preseason. You get to

know the lads. You start to build confidence and show them what you

are made of. January is difficult. A lot can depend on where you are

from, how many players you know, if you have a good relationship with

the manager. Manager it is a difficult time to move, more than in

Blind... Martial has been following the summer.

That is three times in the last six or seven minutes they have given

that ball away. There's been no shortage of entertainment this

evening as the man they are all trying in some way emulate watches

on. You always suspected that perhaps

being the man who followed Ferguson was not the greatest idea. Perhaps

you wanted to be the man who followed the man who followed

Ferguson. Well, van Gaal has that opportunity. I think the biggest

problem is the huge contrast in styles in terms of where United

worked at for so many years with their attacking play and goals and

creativity. They seem to have gone completely the other way, especially

this season. I think that is the fans' frustration, more than

anything. Not even the results. Derby County have gone out of the FA

Cup in seven of the last eight seasons at home.

Tom Ince was a bit more central there. I saw him play in more of a

number ten position against Reading a few weeks ago. He can play in a

few positions. Just watching George Thorne in the

middle of the pitch, who scored that brilliant equaliser, looking a

little bit leggy. Juan Mata has been more involved in

the second half. Lingard chillier brilliant finish from Daley Blind!

He did not have to break stride. Simply tucked it into the corner of

the net. Really well crafted goal. Expertly finished I Daley Blind.

Derby County have it all to do again. I'm not sure what he is doing

in the box. But a what a finish when he gets there. Nobody tracks him.

Good run to the near post. Finished it like a striker. Good play from

Lindegaard as well. It has been coming in the last five or six

minutes. A really good finish. Little gift from one Dutchman to

another. I would love to know what he is writing down there. Is he

actually writing down the school? I'm not sure. I am not a big

believer in it, I think you can miss the game. Make yourself look busy.

A little under-25s minutes to go for the Championship side to keep

themselves in the FA Cup. They have been the better

deserve to be in the lead. They have been nice and creative in the final

third. Some good linkup play. It has been a decent performance from

United. Bradley Johnson coming in from

behind, and Anthony Taylor was right on the spot.
