it all stopped. We were in our own rhythm. Cantona! Sheringham! Would

you believe it?! Ronaldo! How times have changed. Time for a

change. The clock is ticking. It's time for the Emirates FA Cup

semi-final between Everton and Manchester United -

two teams with a proud teams who, it has to be said,

have underachieved this season. Everton manager Roberto Martinez

especially I suppose the Derby on Wednesday night, which was

catastrophic preparation for this game? It was an all-time low for

Martinez' reign here at Everton. But it has not just being that night, it

they have had for about 30 years, certainly in the Premier League era,

and I think they are seriously underperforming. With the players

they have got, they should be higher up the table. The FA Cup got

Martinez the job and now it could save him his job. FA Cup success,

would it paper over the cracks for Manchester United of what has been

an in different season? It has been a very disappointing season. I just

feel as if sometimes it just does not work for a manager. Roy Hodgson

at Liverpool, George Graham at Tottenham, even Alan Pardew at

I don't think even an FA Cup win in the final would be enough for

Manchester United for Louis van Gaal. They do not score enough

be Lukaku, for Everton. Making their way into the stadium,

the Evertonians, who have seen their team winning just once in the last

nine league games, culminating in that thrashing by Liverpool on

Wednesday. Lots of unrest amongst the fans. The pressure is growing on

Roberto Martinez. Juliette Ferrington has spoken to him.

I would not say it is a setback. It is clearly a feeling of hurt.

As a manager, you understand that you can't lose any time with

things you cannot control, people are going to talk,

As a manager, you have to concentrate on trying to win

the next game and control things that you can.

Do you look back at your success in the cup with Wigan and think it

the question which everyone is asking. Even looking at the strength

in depth, they have got a stronger squad.

since they won a trophy, but this is the best squad of players. Do you

think that? In 20 years, definitely. So where do you think Everton should

finish, with all of the other clubs at the top? Leicester, maybe? You

look at the likes of West Ham, challenging near the top,

Southampton, all of these teams - Everton should be... Is it

confidence, or do you think it is tactical, Louis? The league is a

marathon, it is not about a few games playing well. It is about, you

need the spirit when you play, especially at home. You do not feel

that. When you're going to Goodison, it used to be a place where you know

that after the game, you suffered. And that is not the situation you

see. Maybe sometimes the players are playing in their comfort zone. That

is what I see as an ex-player. This is not the thing that it used to be.

You see some managers challenging a bit more the players. This is where

you can see, there is quality, but may be lacking a few things to

success. I know the league form is not good also, which is why it is

such a massive game for both managers today. Defensively, you

look at John Stones here, he gets bullied by Origi. He gets outmuscled

at the far post. But the way they're defending, I know they have had

injuries, colour again, we mentioned John Stones, and I look at John

Stones and I keep hearing people say, we've got to accept that he

makes mistakes because of the way he plays. Either he is not being

coached or he isn't listening, because he keeps making the

mistakes, time and time again. No doubt about it, he has potential,

but the penny has to drop sooner rather than later. He cannot keep on

making the same mistakes. He continues to make these mistakes,

and he gets the message from the touchline, well done, carry on. As

you say, the penny has to drop with him at some stage. That is a British

thing, we have probably not got time to go into that. What are your

thoughts on Lukaku up front, Louis? He's a great talent, he has got

quality, he has got strength. He's He's a great talent, he has got

just going nowhere here. Just brilliant, he goes past four

players. Dribbling is not the issue for him. He can score goals.

Sometimes it is doing the things you don't like come like defending, that

kind of situation. Fantastic player. He has not been at it since that

night at Goodison. He has not been hoarding the ball up well enough, he

has not been working as hard as I have seen him this season. Looking

for a big performance from Lukaku tonight. Time to hear from the

Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal.

You have managed at World Cups, what does an FA Cup semifinal mean to

you? I don't know, yet, is my first! You must be excited? Yes, of course,

for us it is exciting. We are very close now, but first, we have to win

against Everton. That's our big challenge today. You have gone with

virtually the same side which saw off West Ham in the quarterfinal,

with Rooney in four Herrera. You must be confident that your young

stars can shine again? I hope so, you never know. But I have the

confidence in them. That's why they are in the line-up. Outside of

Manchester United, people are referring to this competition and

this game as a season defining moment - how do you look at it?

I am very bored with all of the discussions. Because it isn't true?

Six months, this discussion, I don't think it's an issue. But it is

important for United to win something? Always important when you

are in a semifinal. It is important for Everton and Watford and Crystal

Palace also. When you are so close, yes, you want to win. The FA Cup is

very important in England. It is also a title. For every player, but

also for every manager it is a challenge. What do you think of the

good young players coming through. Very good! You can see Martial, the

top one for weeks because he hasn't been put under a lot of pressure

because of Schweinsteiger. His style was new to the Premier League. Doing

pretty much everything, asking him a lot. Excited about his future? Yes,

because he lot. Excited about his future? Yes,

can score with both feet, lot. Excited about his future? Yes,

strong. So much quality but maybe he doesn't have the same killer

instinct as players you can compare with him, but he is young. He will

get better when he comes inside and plays down the middle. He is

developing his game, he is adding other aspects to his game, he has

the striking aspect to get into good areas. The positive for United's

season is the emergence of one or two of these young forwards. Almost

the Manchester United way. It is, but at the same time, it is still

about injuries. You don't have that much introduction of youngsters in

one season. Maybe the quality of the team wasn't that strong. That's how

I feel. Rashford might not have even had his chance if not for the injury

to Martial. It is nice for the Academy. It is a bad sign for the

to Martial. It is nice for the first team and the kind of players

you should have at these clubs. What has been impressive with Rashford,

what I saw when I went into the team at 17, for Southampton, I found it

difficult, but he scored goals and he has continued. He does the basics

well. Jagielka, massive gamble. Huge gamble, would he start if it was a

league game? Martinez said before, it is a big gamble. We will find

out. How do you see it going? I'm going to let my heart will rule --

will my head, Everton. The guys are quietly confident. I'm going for

United. Strong in recent weeks, 2-1. I can't believe I'm going to say

this but I'm going for Manchester United, Gary! OK, playing for a

place here at Wembley, it is Everton against Manchester United with Danny

Murphy and Steve Wilson. COMMENTATOR: Thank you, good

afternoon everybody. The first semifinal was in 1872 at the

Kennington Oval and seven years before that ground had hosted a Test

match, 144 years on, 72 clubs have played in 42 venues for the right to

play in the final of the FA Cup. These are two of the big beasts of

the tournament's long history here today. United's 28th cup semifinal,

a record, jointly held with Arsenal. It is Everton's 26th. Two of those

front, 18-year-old Marcus Rashford? He has been a sensational find for

Manchester United. Talk about pressure! Who is under the most out

of those two? Amongst the substitutes, Matthew Pennington,

wearing 38 for Everton, recalled from a loan spell at Walsall this

week. He played on Tuesday for them against Swindon. Tony Hibbert, 35

years old, he hasn't played in 16 months because of a knee injury. He

got 45 minutes under his belt on Monday for the U21 team, which is a

bit strange given that he is 35! Danny Murphy is alongside me.

Anthony Taylor is the referee. How much of a risk is it going to become

a Jagielka playing? It is worth the risk, a massive game for Everton.

Great atmosphere here. With his experience, it was definitely a risk

worth taking, he's been brilliant for Everton over the years that he

has been there. He will be organising and leading. So,

Manchester United will get the FA Cup semifinal underway. Marcus

introduction, and here he is, under the Wembley arch, in the red and

black for Manchester United, kicking from left to right in the first 45

at Maidstone, he struggled that day but he has turned into a super

footballer. Probably Roy's first choice this summer. Clearance from

Robles, illustrating that bit of sunlight on the playing surface. It

may be a bit troublesome for him over the next few moments before the

shadow drifts away over his goal. That is Smalling's header. Rooney,

in the deeper midfield role. A foul on Fellaini. He's almost a forgotten

man, at Goodison Park, Darron Gibson. Gareth Barry is a big miss

for Everton. He is one of the few who came out with any credit in the

first half of the derby game. He has been the controller for them in many

of their best appearances, dictating play and he will be a big miss

today, that's for sure. Carrick making the forward run ahead of

Smalling. Blind moving forwards. Given towards Lingard, who couldn't

keep the ball in play. Interesting, isn't it, this relatively new role

for Wayne Rooney. In a much deeper position. Yeah, but he'll still have

the license to join in, he has Carrick behind him so I still expect

to see him getting in the box when the ball goes wide. He is

comfortable getting on the ball and spreading play. It's whether he has

the fitness to last on such a big pitch. Rojo for Manchester United.

Everton will lead Lukaku to have one of his good days today. He's had

plenty this season -- will need. Probably that 2-0 victory over

Chelsea at Goodison Park would be the high point of Everton's season.

Also reaching the semifinals of the League Cup, losing controversially

over two legs to Manchester City. Besic finding his feet in the game

in the right back role. Losing possession. Martial, a dangerous run

and great feat. That's a corner. Great run from Martial but it all

started with Gibson, not turning United round when he had time on the

ball, playing the short pass. Look at this for skill. A good tackle

from Stones. It was, important touch.

Blind to take. His father is here today. High and long towards

Lukaku... Lukaku! The angle is tight! Oh, and it is knocked off the

line! Rooney got all the way back! Well, could Lukaku have knocked that

square? He should have scored. Cleverley was

there, aching for a pass. Credit Rooney, though.

Is it fair to say, Danny, that both of these sides are stronger going

forward? DANNY MURPHY: For Everton, that's

definitely the case. They've got to have a go.

Just a long one downfield, and then he causes absolute panic. This is

the power and strength. Just he causes absolute panic. This is

bad touch - he needed that touched to be tighter. And what a clearance

from Wayne Rooney. Look at him sprinting back. That is that deeper

role you were talking about with Wayne Rooney. Wonderful clearance.

He is having such a wonderful season, Lukaku, and he could have

fired Everton in front. Cleverley was doing everything he could to let

him know he was there. Yes, I do not blame him for going himself, he was

one on one with the goalkeeper. But once he had the bad touch, it

limited his choices. Good It will not be the last time they

try that tactic, Everton. Martial did tremendously well to keep that

in play. Foul by Aaron Lennon, free kick. Not having this, Danny? Well,

he can't move out of the way. It was a brilliant bit of skill from

Martial to retrieve the pass, anyway. It is noticeable how deep

Everton are while United have possession. But is that too

negative? We will wait and see. Danger here. Rooney or Blind to

deliver. It is Rooney's ball in, and Rojo got a touch, but not quite

enough. That was another good chance. Good inswinger from Wayne

Rooney. I think it's Stones loses him. Unlucky.

Won back by Rooney. Carrick. always end up thinking that

Manchester United look a better side always end up thinking that

with Carrick in it rather than out of it. Could not agree more. With

him dictating things, they Lingard... Tremendous ball. The flag

is up against Martial. They are a tremendous threat, Lingard, Martial,

Rashford. Well, they have all got pace, they all want to score goals

and they all like running behind. And that's horrible to defend

against. Martial I have been really impressed with this season. Coming

off that left-hand side. Besic is new to that right back position.

season for Everton. That is a good return, it really is

Cleverley, the former Manchester United player, of course.

Everton get it away, but that was marvellous stuff from Lingard and

Rashford. Fantastic football from the young lads. What a tackle from

John Stones, by the way. Here years again, Lingard, full of bright

ideas. Lingard, onside! Robles makes the

save. What an open start to this semifinal it has been. Well, they

should be one down now, Everton. This was an amazing chance. What a

pass from Rooney, that's what he's capable of. What a ball, the vision.

The creativity that he gives you. Keeps his eye on it, gets a decent

connection - straight at the 'keeper. Fantastic chance. Both

sides now have had gilt-edged chances.

John Stones was struggling in the Merseyside derby in midweek with

stomach cramps. Yes, he has certainly not played as well as he

did before he got left out. When he got back he was on the bench for a

while, Roberto left him out. Has just lost a little bit of his

confidence. Big game for him this afternoon. Have to say, the red card

for Funes Mori was so damaging to Roberto Martinez' options. It was

absolutely crazy. Merseyside derby or not - ridiculous. But they have

got to put that to bed now. They are in the middle of this wonderful

opportunity, FA Cup semifinal at Wembley - enjoy yourself, playing

with freedom. Manchester United have certainly

showed some lovely freedom and quick feet in the first 12 minutes.

body, and keep it close. Well, if he keeps getting chances like that, it

would be a big surprise if he doesn't take one. The big surprise

is how open it is - chances for both teams. The high line that Manchester

United play, if you can get the ball in behind early, you're going to get

chances. Really good first 15 minutes,

especially if you happen to be a neutral. Free kick, Everton. Take a

breath. End-to-end, chances for both sides. This was that long ball. It

is a good ball. He does Smalling. Twice he has been in and his touch

has let him down. You can see it bouncing off his left knee. Good all

considering the success they have had in that time, that this trophy

has been elusive. Wayne Rooney will certainly be desperate to win it, as

will Michael Carrick. attentions of Fosu-Mensah. Rooney,

enjoying the opportunity I think to show off his range of passing.

Gibson has got to be careful. Corner. He is causing all sorts of

problems with his pace, Rashford. He's confident, he's skilful. Did

well to try and stay on his feet, but he is certainly a threat.

back position. Well, it will be a while since he has played that role.

and behind him, Jagielka, who gets it away.

Barkley dwelling on it and he gets a free kick. Little bit fortunate.

Fortunate but he only had one option when he turned around, Lukaku. You

have Lennon and Cleverley playing more less as full-backs at the

moment and they didn't have the legs to get there. Didn't see much wrong

with that. No, he was fortunate. Everton getting the throw in from

Linton's -- from Blind's clearance. There is a definite edginess about

this Everton team, which is understandable given the form they

have been in but somebody has to show some composure and get on the

ball, communicate and get a foothold in the game because at the moment

they are being run ragged. They have to maintain their composure. Worth

saying that they have had four players sent off in eight games and

they can't afford that. This fixture in 1985, Norman Whiteside, Everton

against Manchester United. Kevin Moran was the first player to be

sent off in an FA Cup final that year.

Really important that Everton - they conceded very late in the first half

at Anfield in midweek, and then committed the cardinal sin of

conceding almost straightaway again, and the game was over at half-time.

They mustn't do that here. It is a bit of a struggle for Besic

at times. It is, yes. I could not agree more. It is difficult for

anyone to come up against Martial when he's in this sort of form. But

you've got to get some help, you got to get players either side of you,

talking to you, telling you which way to show him. Certainly you don't

want to show him down the line, you've got to show him into bodies.

Blind's corner. Here's the goal. Just have a look at

John Stones, trying to nick it away. And then Rashford finds Martial, and

Martial tees it up for Fellaini. It is just too easy, the way he goes

past Besic. Very hard to defend when someone is in on the byline. Scuffs

Anfield, beating Chelsea, winning at Manchester City, winning at West Ham

in the cup. When he's really needed a result, they have generally found

one. Yes. That City game was massive, especially after Liverpool

had beaten them in the Europa League. It was a thoroughly deserve

win as League. It was a thoroughly deserve

Manchester City. I think he has got wino Hyde, Louis van Gaal. I don't

I think they play forward. It is a cheeky start, when you see the

header from Wayne Rooney, it was a very important moment. But I can see

the confidence of the players, especially Martial, Rashford, the

way they take the ball. They put a lot of pressure on the full-backs

sober up it is a good first half for them. Everton had a couple of

opportunities, but they are not really at the races, are they? No,

not really, they are quite content to sit off. It is just Lukaku when

Besic, they are still comfortable defensively. Interesting watching

Fellaini trying to point to his number! He has got so much hair! But

defensively, a lot of good football from Manchester United? Yes, they

are playing well. You feel about the youngsters up front are doing the

job. In the decisive moment, when you have to make the decision as a

defender, that's when it is very important. That's what Everton is

lacking right now, someone who is making the right call. It is all

about making sure that the defenders are well in line. It is the linking

thing that we are talking about. Organising. Organisation, yes, they

don't have that. We can see it. It is very important. Lukaku on his

own. He is creating his own chances, really. So it is not really about

connection. Anthony Martial, he has caused havoc.

You have to give Manchester United credit because they've obviously

seen a weakness in the full-back position. He has been breathtaking.

What a touch that is, pulling it out of the sky, keeping it in and his

first thought is to get the ball down and get at them with his pace.

He's had a brilliant half. Putting him in those positions, his

dribbling speed. When you are playing as a lone striker it is

difficult to see that. Alan has spoken about the weaknesses in the

Everton defence, Besic, but they are getting forwards continuously.

Everton don't build from the solid platform and they are exposed, and

that is where Martial exposed them. We mentioned Besic, not getting much

help in front of Martial? They are struggling. More chances for

Manchester United, Lingard, Rashford, the young gathering of

players are causing havoc. They are full of energy, playing with no

fear, skilful. They've been brilliant. You can tell they are

enjoying themselves. They are really holding their positions. Martial has

played on the left-hand side. Constantly seeing Lingard coming in

and Rashford on the right-hand side. Fellaini can run beyond them and

Rooney can get into pockets of space, the movement from the front

four is great. You mentioned Rooney, what about him in this midfield

role? He looks comfortable, is it possible for England, having Kane

and Waady? He can play any possible for England, having Kane

I don't think he'll let you down -- and Fadi. The time he has on the

ball today, spraying passes around, no doubt about that -- Jamie Vardy.

You spoke about Lukaku and how important he is, he had two great

chances but he couldn't finish them. It is the manner of the touches. One

player can make the difference. His touch let him down here. This is a

very important moment for Everton. You have to take your chances. How

good is that from You have to take your chances. How

all people. Brilliant, he can play in that midfield role. That is a

brilliant ball, one on one with Smalling, but again, his touch just

The spell at Watford was probably the best of my managerial career. It

was fantastic. When I signed for Watford, I asked what they wanted

weathering the storm and now we have to push on and create more chances,

People marking individually and crossing over each other, it is very

hard to play that way. The wide men then become full-backs. Their he is,

Gareth Barry. Just as well for Everton that

was smartly off his line. A bit of a grubber from the Everton 'keeper

saves he made a late on at Upton Park in the quarterfinal were
