Salford City v Notts County The FA Cup

Welcome to the first round of the emirate 's FA Cup. Our story starts

here in the north-west of England. The stage is the city of Salford.

It's been written by a famous five, but the tale so far has been drama

all the way. No matter where in the world and whatever level, every club

has dreams. For me and my brother Gary, Paul, Nicky and Ryan, it was

Premier League titles and European glory. 16 FA Cup winners medals

between them. Now this is our dream. We bought a football club.

And it's been... Different! Not everyone was happy. And there's been

a few bumps along the way. Why did we buy a football club? But I

wouldn't change it for the world. Now here we are, the first round of

the FA Cup, against the oldest club in the Football League, Notts

County. They are the ones with all the history. We're just the minnows,

the underdogs. Hard to believe? You believe it. We still have dreams and

we know more than most that dreams do come true.

The owners know their stuff, as Phil Neville mentioned there is quite a

history for tonight macro-birds visitors as well though. Notts

County victory this competition back in the 19th century and have much

experience in their current crop, there is Roy Carroll, who used to

play for Old Trafford -- at Old Trafford. Salford city from the

seventh tier of being list game, taking on Notts County from League

2, three divisions above them. It's a sell-out here from Moor Lane.

Thankfully we have a man here who did not have much of an issue

getting a ticket, Gary Neville is with us to night, alongside our

neutral, Mr Ian Wright. One of the class of 92 and one of the owners,

for those who don't know, of Salford city. Gary, when you and your fellow

friends took over 18 months ago, did you ever think about a night like

this, being promoted, being fought in the division as we stand and

being in the first round of the FA Cup? Not at all. We weren't thinking

about the FA Cup at all, we were thinking about an academy and

improving the first team. Since Christmas, the new managers have

come in and they have been absolutely brilliant. They have

lifted the whole place. The performances have been getting

better and better and the results as well. I still can't believe we're in

the FA Cup first round! This man alongside you, you're genuinely

excited about a night? Yeah. I played in the FA Cup for my Saturday

team. I'm quite buzzing for the guys because this is such an unbelievable

occasion for the guys. I'm sure they will be very nervous but I said to

one of the guys, you've got to be very nervous, this is what it is all

about. Let's remind you exactly how far we are going to find Salford

city. This would be a... For the players tonight, this is a huge

occasion. A chance show them what they are made of. When Gary

mentioned some of the FA Cup medals he has got between him and Nicky and

Paul Scholes and myself, I have got two myself and one loses one, but I

did my job on the day! But the fact is, for us guys we are fortunate

enough to play in a few times and get to the final. For these guys, to

get to the first round, this is unbelievable for them and they may

not get to this level again. Lots of people have seen the documentary.

These guys have had a camera in their face for the last 18 months.

They won't be starstruck, will they? I don't think they will be

starstruck. Their potential failings tonight might be that they are too

ego. When you see some of the challenges that go in at the level

we play at and then we have got a Championship referee, their

eagerness could be a problem. That is what worries me. What about their

fitness? I don't have any concerns about their fitness. They are really

fit lads. The manager has brought in Hungary, passionate lads. They are

eager in the way they play but that can be a bit over exuberant. We have

had a couple of players sent off! It's not just these two to night,

we've also got Trevor Sinclair, who lit up the early rounds of the FA

Cup with his wonderful hat collection last season. He also came

in as assistant manager... It got a bit tasty on the touchline so we

thought we would reunite Trevor with Salford City ointment is. It was

certainly lively on the touchline that day! You have got some presence

in the technical area, is that something you're looking to calm or

is it a case of if it's not broke, don't fix it? We have been here for

seven seasons and so far it has stood as in pretty good stead, Jon

Stead playing tonight... It has stood us in good stead. If it's not

broke, we won't try and fix it too much. There are probably one or two

things to work on and the owners keep telling us that, but so far it

has been great fun. You have had the show Class of 92 and the FA Cup

draw. How has it been to try to keep the players, and concentrated? It

has been difficult, to be honest. We beat Southport two weeks ago and

then we had Matlock in the league on Tuesday night. As much as you try

and make sure the boys are professional, it's difficult to try

and raise your game when you know you have got the FA Cup first round

with the draw being done the night before and Notts County in the first

round. To be honest it has been difficult keeping the lads's feet on

the ground. But they are buzzing, absolutely buzzing. There are one or

two nerves, I would imagine, but more excitement than anything else.

Bernard, you have the Class of 92, probably the most recognisable

footballers of the Premier League era running your football club, does

that add a bit of extra pressure? Yeah, absolutely. How to impress the

likes of the Nevilles, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, we could win 5-0 and

they could still pick fault! But we are learning from the best. They get

involved? If we want their advice they are there and if we get it

wrong, I'm sure they are there to give us a nudge. Thanks, gentlemen.

The Class of 92 appointed those two. Good evening everybody. You can do a

bit better than that! I'm sure they will get cracking once the game

kicks off. Quite a few stars of Salford city, there is the famous

Babs' team bar there and if you've seen the documentary, you will know

these faces. Karen Baird is the club chairman and also Andy is the club

secretary and as a bit of absolutely everything. Karen, how hard has it

been for you to deal with the five superstars who have been involved

with this club? They've been pretty good actually. Easy to deal with.

Gary is the most demanding person I've ever met! But apart from that

they are all down to deal with. Gary is the most demanding person I've

ever met! But apart from that they are all down-to-earth, good lads.

?67,500 plus hot dogs, you can do a lot with that money, can't you? We

can, we need a lot doing with the ground to get as ready for the next

level should we get promoted. That is where most of the money will have

to go. I believe you were a little underwhelmed when you first met Gary

and Ryan, just explain why? I'm a Liverpool fan! But they are great,

yeah. You can forgive us for focusing on the home side tonight

but as we mentioned earlier, Notts County are really a team with a rich

tradition and history. Look at them out there on the pitch at the

moment, actually that is Salford but the Notts County boys are just going

in the blue, there. They are one of the founder members of the Football

League back in 1888. They won the FA Cup six years later as well. Plenty

of Premier League experience in tonight's team, there is Roy

Carroll, and some including him have shared a dressing room with those

Salford owners. Salford city will be at home to

Notts County. I was at the gym and one of my mates told me we have been

drawn against Salford. We have to be ready for the battle. A lot of our

younger players grew up watching the Class of 92 and I think that will

give the game and added buzz. The class of 92 was an amazing

experience for me. I played in the FA youth cup that season, which

obviously everyone knows. Very privileged to play with them players

and see what they've gone on to achieve. It's amazing. For me

personally, I didn't really know much of them until I came over. It

will never happen again, will it? Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil

Neville, Paul Scholes. Best midfield player I've ever played with. Just

give him the ball. He can get from box to box. He scored a lot of goals

like that. COMMENTATOR: Manchester United have

taken the lead! Their I didn't really realise how much of

an impact and a change they had made to the whole club itself. It's very

interesting and a massive challenge for them. Here is Gary Neville,

looking for Ryan Giggs, here's Alan Smith! Brilliant goal. I wouldn't

imagine they've changed in terms of people at all. That is what is so

special about it. After their careers of playing had finished,

they stayed together to do another venture. I never thought Paul

Scholes would even go on TV! I think everyone is looking forward to this

game. But it's going to be a difficult game. We signed 20 new

players in the summer. For any club, it's going to take time. We had a

massive game last week against Portsmouth. Come to the Monday

morning and it is the FA Cup again. Salford and the

Salford have got a big club. The club that we play for now, the

history of it is something we've got to protect. We are proud to play for

Notts County. To say you have played for the oldest Football League club

in the world, it's a big honour. For a lot of them it might be the first

time they have played in the FA Cup, and it will be a nice contrast and

probably a game that a lot of our lads, ourselves included, will

member for a long time to come. They are all ready for tonight. There is

a chat with you -- shot of you having a chat with Alan Smith. I was

just talking to him about what he was up to and was he looking forward

to the game? Looking handsome, isn't he! He is gorgeous! Alan Smith is

Are you nervous, genuinely? I'm not nervous at all. I get nervous when

we play league games because our focal point has always been the

league. The committee, the 14, 15 people who have been working down

here 20 years and giving their all for the club, I've never seen them

as happy. It's the greatest day of their lives in terms of Salford

city. You were telling us about the changes you've had to make for

tonight. What have you had to bring in for the game? The marquees and

we've had to bring stewards in for one of the only times in our

history. The broadcast trucks, the media stuff. It's a big change, a

massive change. The food and beverage requirements are huge.

Barbara in the cafe, they will be doing a lot to night I think! Notts

County also possess a striker who knows a thing or two about scoring

in the FA Cup. This is him last season banging the gold in four

Bradford, scoring in that 4-2 win against Chelsea. They were 2-0

down, remember. And also in the victory over Sunderland in round

four. Our roving reporter has tracked him down. Thanks for joining

us, John. What is it with you and the FA Cup? It was obviously good

for me last season! -- good to me. Scoring goals and also the run that

we went on. It just obviously brings that famous magic of the FA Cup

which everybody wants to see, the giant killings and hopefully this

evening that won't be the case! Underdogs last season against

Chelsea and Sunderland, definitely favourites this year. How does that

change yours and the team's mentality? You look at the underdog

situation and most players up and down the country have been an

underdog at some point. I think it just takes the shackles off a bit,

you can relax and enjoy the game and anything can happen on the night.

The night ourselves being the favourites, although we know how

difficult the evening is going to be, if we start the game well and

settle into it early, hopefully we can get through to the next round.

It is famously owned by the Class of 92 and there was a documentary on it

last night. This team can get quite physical, how are you going to

handle that? I'm sure we will handle that fine. I didn't watch the

documentary but obviously it is great for the club and the area

itself that those high profile figures are getting involved in it

and you can see how things have progressed at the club. It's great

for the club and the area, the physical side of it, been playing

for a while now, we know all about that, myself, the likes of Smudger

and Alan Smith --, Alan Smith, and Roy Carroll, we know what we can do.

This is how they line up the night. Elliott Hewitt at right back is a

Welsh U21s layer. Up, with Izale McLeod alongside him, 21 goals last

season. Izale McLeod is someone you used to work with at MK Dons? When

he hits that goal-scoring form, he will shoot from anywhere. He's got a

nice touch as well. It's one of those games, if he is up for this

game, he will take some stopping. He's not bad, he's got some good

skills about him. Plenty in that site if writing your lads. How

important is it they get the mentality right tonight? I think

so, one of the things you want to do on a night like tonight when you're

playing against opposition that is superior is to keep the game going

and make sure you stay in the games as late as possible. If you get to

60 or 70 minutes, you are always that one moment away. That is a

worry about a night like tonight against a big team, are they going

to blitz you in the first 20 minutes? That is when the fitness

could kick in, for 60 or 70 minutes, if they are really fit they could

kick on from there. They've got to watch out for the killer that is

complacency... What are you looking up there for? That is our drone up

in the sky! We're talking about football, Mr Wright. You know a

thing or two about your football, but when it comes to running a club,

it's a very different proposition. Millions of people have watched your

documentary about running this club in the past few weeks and been

enjoying it as well, but the road, as you know, has not always been a

smooth one. I need a new oven. Please can I have

a new oven! But a nice man behind the goal and we serve out of there?

Can we not just buy one? I could walk away, don't worry, very easily.

When I think about it now, it were a bit tight to be fair, shoving her in

a van in the car park around the back. Hello! This is my new kitchen.

As you can see it's not quite finished yet but nearly there. The

most expensive cafe in non-league football!

Trouble, trouble... Honestly... It's shocking. I feel like going in and

ripping their heads off, do you? My instinct was just go in and listen.

I felt like strangling them but I never would have done, I never would

have opened my mouth! Players don't hold court in dressing rooms. He

stands up and I'm thinking, he is like President Obama! It's like he's

the president of Salford! You can't interfere. That's what I'm going to

find difficult, because I love the football chat, you know what I mean?

We've bought a football club and we can't talk about football! I love

the shot of you, Gary, in the changing room, holding your tongue.

Let's have a look at the Salford side tonight. Four players in there

with league experience. Lynch at left-back. Danny Webber as well. We

made the call to him a year and a half ago and we wondered if he would

be able to drop down and be stimulated to play at this level but

he has been a beacon for us with his attitude and he has controlled the

dressing room and made the lads think, if he has played the level he

has done and he can give it all, then I can as well. They are getting

ready, a few minutes away from a huge night for them. You were saying

earlier your concern is keeping 11 players on the pitch? I think so

because generally add non-league level that tackling is a lot more

ferocious than in the league and these lads get away with tackles

that I see every week that might be a red in the Premier League game! If

you tackle like that tonight, we could be in a bit of trouble. If the

Championship referee we have got plays the game as he would normally

on a Saturday. But the chance for one of those to be a hero? A very

exciting time for them. People don't realise about the nervous energy,

you've got to stay in charge of that, but they should just go out

and play because it is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, I can't

emphasise that enough. A couple of things to clear up, have you sorted

out the hooky Skybox? It's gone! Also we need to apologise because

one of our cameras is by your normal standing spot tonight! Great to talk

Arsenal, won the FA Cup, and our journey to the final this season

starts tonight. We are ready for the first game of

the first round of this season's Emirates FA Cup. The teams are on

their way out. There are millions watching at home and millions around

the world. Let's introduce you to your commentary team tonight,

Jermaine Jenas and first up, Steve Bauer.

Thank you. Welcome to Moor Lane. So much talk about this matter and so

eagerly anticipated. Can Salford provide the end result? They've

never seen a crowd like this. Their last league attendance was just over

400. Tonight, over 1400 are here to see if Salford can produce the

shock. On the biggest night in their 75 year history. A club who didn't

even compete in the FA Cup until 1990 now have the chance to write

their headlines. As far as Notts County are concerned, they are

determined not to be part of them, of course. The world's oldest club

to beat playing professionally. -- be playing professionally. They will

be praying for less drama and a professional night's work. Jay Lynch

is the man that Notts County will have to beat. Formally Bolton

academy. Lewis Hardcastle in midfield is on a youth loan from

Lagan Rovers and Danny Webber is the joint top scorer, over 220 games in

English league football. Familiar face in the Notts County

goal. It is a former FA Cup winner, the Northern Ireland international

Roy Carroll, who is 38 now. Alan Smith has played in an FA Cup

final, his final game for Manchester United. Plenty of firepower up

front, Jon Stead, who got five goals in the competition last season,

alongside Izale McLeod, the former Crawley striker who cost ?150,000 in

the summer. A couple of familiar signings among the substitutes with

famous fathers. Tunji Moses, the son of Remi, an Chris Sharp is the son

of a former FA Cup winner, the former Everton striker Graham. Gary

Neville talking about the importance of the red three tonight and it is

Andrew madly. -- it is Andrew Madley. He

officiated the League 1 play-off final. Roy Carroll came on in 2004

for Manchester United to win the FA Cup. The Salford the

-- the Salford City captain works nights. Jonathan Stead was big joint

top scorer in the FA Cup competition last season, with five goals. But

before we have the drama, we do have a minute's silence in respect of

those who died fighting for their country.

WHISTLE APPLAUSE

The moment has finally arrived for Salford city. Currently fourth in

the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Against Notts County, 15th

in League 2. 59 blazes between them in the football -- the footballing

pyramid. -- 59 blazes. One moment, one night, could change all that.

That is certainly Salford plus aim. The first time

red and white, colours that the Class of 92 changed after they

bought the club, from tangerine. They will get us off and under way

immediately, with a ball aimed towards Danny Webber. He managed to

get it across as well. He began his career at Manchester United. That is

a throw to Notts County. Jermaine Jenas, you have been on both sides

of the coin really in this situation? I have, it was a while

ago but when we were playing for the -- when I was playing for Newcastle

United we came up against Yeading. In this kind of situation, you can't

win, there is a lot of pressure on your shoulders as the bigger team.

But a good start from Salford. Forward by Howson, one of the two

central defenders. Scott Burton, who will be an important player in

central midfield. That tonight. Stopforth. No way through for Jordan

Hulme. Salford have really settled well, they have popped it around a

couple of times. A lot of people would have expected them to go long

straight up to Webber but they have settled well and not let the

occasion get to them too much. If they can continue that, they can

grow into this game and gain more confidence. I'm sure that's what the

manager will ask them to do. They have to control their aggression.

They do. Gary mentioned that at the start of the show. The referee can

be different at non-league level. But I'm sure they will have been

told that, that they need to maintain their discipline to have

any chance of winning this game. Alan Sheehan, on loan from Bradford.

The Irishman, who was part of that Bradford squad who won at Stamford

Bridge and knocked out Chelsea last season.

Ricardo Moniz is the Notts County manager, experiencing the FA Cup as

a boss for the first time tonight. He arrived in April, the Dutchman,

but couldn't keep Notts County in League 1. He signed 21 players over

the summer to try to change them for Jews. The 15th in League 2 at the

moment, four points off the play-offs. -- change their fortunes.

Harmlessly into the arms of Roy Carroll. One thing that has stood

out from that bit of play is the amount of bodies Salford almost

risked into the attacking third. There must have been seven players

when the ball went forward. Whether that's another style of play they

will bring into the game today. But the ball forward and put Notts

County under pressure. They are at home, they have to go for it.

Anthony Johnson, one of the joint managers. For, the 33-year-old

self-employed wagon driver who is hoping to help lead Salford into the

second round of the FA Cup. This is the seventh game Salford

City have played in the FA Cup already this season. Needed a couple

of replays in the qualifying rounds. They very much want this journey to

continue. Good work from Stopforth. Thierry Audel, who has come in at

left back for Notts County tonight. Nick Barmby's son Jack has been

playing there the last couple of games, on loan from Leicester. The

Frenchman restored to the back four. Salford playing 4-3-3 could really

work. The pitches a lot tighter. They don't want to give Notts County

any space and that was at an example. Roy Carroll would usually

play it out to right back, but because they have three players up

top, it's not allowing them to do that. It's putting County under a

lot more pressure. Kyle De Silva has been recalled by

Ricardo Moniz tonight. No problem for Jay Lynch. The managers were

telling me this week he won them the league last season. 22-year-old who

was in Manchester United's Academy and then went to Bolton. He was on

the bench three times in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers. Eight

miskick from Edwards. It's important to make sure you have a strong

foundation. The back form a grand goalkeeper are important in any

team. In non-league especially, the last thing you need is your

goalkeeper making too many mistakes. Lynch didn't do that last

season because they got promoted. Gary Neville watching on, Nicky Butt

just in front of him. Paul Scholes as well. Three of the five members

of Class of '92 do able to attend tonight. Ryan Giggs watching from

the Manchester United team hotel before they play West Brom tomorrow.

Forward from Chris Lynch, the Salford captain, towards Jordan

Hulme. A chance for De Silva to stretches

legs for Notts County. The referee happy for play to continue. Liam

Noble, the former Sunderland youngster. No power generated from

Jon Stead. Jay Lynch has kept five clean sheets

for Salford this season, including in the fourth qualifying round,

crucially, against Southport, the National League team.

Cleared in no uncertain terms by Mike Edwards, who is Notts County's

fitness and conditioning coach. Came back for a second spell last season.

Wasn't supposed to be a permanent fixture, but due to their bad

defensive record earlier in the season, he was called into action

and he's played their last eight games. Some story. Fitness coach and

player. McLeod penalised. Probably lent on him a little bit

too much. He's a big lad, Izale McLeod, and he will be tough to

handle today. Too strong force dead. There was a

deflection along the way and it will be a Notts County corner. The three

owners who are able to attend watching on anxiously. Gary Neville,

just as he did against Southport, has ordered the pitch to be narrowed

tonight. You do what you can to gain the advantage. As long as it's well

within the rules, which it is, you can't blame them for that. Notts

County corner, flicked on by Stead. Salford were mightily relieved that

that effort from Edwards went wide of the target. Even for a

centre-half, that was a very decent effort. He had no right to swivel on

this and got the contacting got. It was bouncing around. That was close.

Thankfully for Salford it just went wide of the post. He has got three

goals from defence since coming into the team, Mike Edwards. The keeper

has got no chance if that's on target. That was a good effort!

Jordan Hulme. Just drifting wide. The 24-year-old.

That's a bullet effort, you know. Because he took its super early, it

caught Carroll off-guard. Probably expecting him to take a touch, but

because he took it so early, he was struggling to get across. The

technique to hit that first time was very good.

Not renowned for sitting down, the Salford managerial duo. Fair to say

Anthony Johnson is the more vocal of the duo. From what I've seen he is!

No huge secret. Wears his heart on his sleeve, but that passion and

enthusiasm was what attracted the owners to appoint them last January.

Danny Webber had gone all the way back.

Back to the management, it can come across like a aggressive and loud

and screaming and shouting, but the one thing I picked up from the

documentary was they were very constructive in everything they

said. You can tell why they've had a huge improvement at Salford. They've

done their homework for this game in a very professional manner. They've

watched DVDs from Notts County outline. Not sure where they got

those from! There's a lot of preparation in a professional manner

from Salford City. They do fancy that they can hurt Notts County. I

chance for Jordan Hulme. Round the goalkeeper... He can't take it.

Jordan Hulme. He does everything right. You're saying, shoot, shoot!

He takes his time, he's composed, but at the final hurdle he loses

control. I think in his mind he wanted to go around the goalkeeper.

The ball is bouncing around. This bit is brilliant. Composure. He

wanted to take it around Carroll. His touch got away from him. So

unlucky. Brilliant chance. I would say they need to be sticking those

chances away usually, but they've started so well that I feel like

they will get more. Jordan Hulme has six goals already this season. He

was the first player ever that Salford City paid money for, from

Ramsbottom. From the managerial duo, their former club. The Class of '92

to paid ?2500 for his services and because they won the title, they had

to buy another ?2500 so he is their record by. They will have to get

used that, putting their hands in their pocket that not! -- that lot.

17 years of old -- years of age, Hardcastle. On loan from Blackburn.

It was only supposed to be for a month, but he and Salford were

desperate for it to be extended and here he is in the FA Cup first round

at 17. He could have gone to Blackburn, where it's nice and

comfortable, all your home comforts, but he didn't. He said he wanted to

better himself and keep playing for Salford, playing league football.

Thankfully for Salford he stayed because he's obviously been an

integral part of what they are doing this season.

Poole trying to create space. There are a few nerves back there for

Notts County. Rightly so. Every time Salford City go forward, they have

for five players to deal with. They are struggling with it. Salford, a

little bit of composure and somebody will get in. Could it be now? The

17-year-old Hardcastle. Just couldn't generate the power. The

player we were just talking about. Good technical ability from

Hardcastle. Drags it onto his left foot. Just couldn't get the purchase

he needed. Needed to put his foot through it a bit more. Composure, it

showing he can go buy players, but just unlucky with the strike in the

end. First quarter of an hour and Salford will be very satisfied

indeed. They will be satisfied. Notts County have changed their

formation to a 4-4-2. If I was the manager I would be considering that.

Only one thing in Webber's mind. Notts County got bodies in the way.

Elliott Hewitt, the Welshman. McLeod to chase. Howson has been penalised.

That's not a free kick, for me. The number of times this happens in a

game. The centre forward shoulder to shoulder with the centre-half. Goes

over a bit easily. You could say Howson went in too strong, but harsh

for me. When Salford City trained for the last time this week, they

only train twice a week, on Wednesday they spent an awful lot of

time on defending set ablaze. They are aware of the danger that Notts

County have in this kind of situation. The last thing you want

to do is be playing so well and concede a goal from the set piece.

That's why they've worked so hard this week. Every player back to

defend this. Salford can try and build again. The

ball was aimed towards Poole. De Silva put under pressure.

Bora played in the Champions League at the age of 17, for Ajax. --

Stanley Aborah. One of those 21 new players introduced in the summer for

Notts County. Too long for Jon Stead. That's all

because Salford are so organised. They are given Notts County no

Watsons. Danny Webber dropped into a 5 in the midfield along with Poole

and left one up top. They left Notts County no options. Gary Neville

mention their fitness at the start. If they can maintain this, this is

going to be a tougher game than may be Notts County thought. They are

working so hard to close down the spaces that every time Notts County

This all adds up. The pressure builds. Notts County keep chipping

the ball out of play and Salford's confidence will grow and the chances

nine games. -- haven't. Notts County have two big lads up

front in McLeod and Stead and Salford aware of the second ball

sometimes. The midfielders will have to help out and try to read those

Stead were waiting. Fantastic recovery. Absolutely brilliant from

Howson. I think Jon Stead is thinking this is a tap in. Jordan

Hulme at the other end against Edwards. Fairly routine in the end

I think it was Howson at the back. That is to. Absolutely brilliant

clearance. If you has a bit more composure and belief, his touch

wasn't great, but if he had shifted it to his right he might have been

able to get a better strike on the ball.

belief in himself. He needed to shift it onto his left hand side,

you play the 4-3-3, the full-backs for Notts County are very dangerous.

It's difficult for your midfield to get all the way across. We've seen

that in the early stages. First with Hewitt and then or Dell got down

this site and put in a great ball. -- Audel. It is something Salford

will have to be aware of in this game.

Thierry Audel, who reached the fourth round of this competition as

a non-league player with Macclesfield a couple of seasons

ago. He scampered down the left-hand side to good effect for Notts

the start as well, I think it was Dawson flying in. This is what the

FA Cup is about. Tackles like that. No wonder these people are coming

down to Salford to watch non-league football. It's brilliant. Stead is

against him in your career. Not happy memories, actually! We were on

for a draw at a wood bar on his debut. He had just come out of the

lower leagues and he came on and got the winner in the 93rd minute.

business tonight. In fact, they've had to at least treble is a normal

catering orders. I put my order in for a pie at half-time. I know you

until the age of 18. The managers and subsequently players recommended

by the chairperson, Karen Baird, who does a Sterling job with Salford

had to make some difficult decisions as we've seen in the documentary,

the Class of '92 too. That's what they will come up against. Brilliant

to bring them in at the time they did. We've talked about Salford's

potential in discipline. The first man in the book is a Notts County

Another thing I've liked about Salford is sometimes when you watch

these ties, almost David and Goliath where you expect all kinds of things

to happen, it doesn't usually happen until the last ten minutes. You

think, why didn't you play like that earlier in the game? They've done it

from the start. Any opportunity they've had to put the ball in the

box and put Notts County under pressure, they've done it. They just

need to get rewarded for it now. McLeod's yellow card was for

persistent fouling. That might worry some of the Salford players

throughout the evening! Here come the team from the Northern Premier

League Premier division again. Webber is onside.

Salford have their corner. Danny Webber has been a thorn in Notts

County's side. He's made all kinds of runs, tracking back, running into

the channels. That was a fantastic run he made there. He wanted to cut

inside onto his right foot. Those constant runs he's making Notts

County just can't deal with. Webber himself will deliver Salford's first

corner of the cup tie. Can it be a productive one? Right on top of Roy

Carroll. No problems for the Northern Ireland international.

Alan Smith had a smile on his face when he went in for that! 35 last

month. Back in the Notts County team in September and he's been there

ever since. A decent amount of possession,

Salford City. If I had to guess, I wouldn't have guessed Notts County

have had more possession. They've definitely not had the better

possession. They might have passed it around the back more, but Salford

have definitely looked more dangerous. The first long throw of

the evening from Hewitt. There might be a Salford opportunity to break

now. Roy Carroll read that situation. I

thought he threw his arm, Roy Carroll. Wasn't happy with the

challenge. Didn't like the challenge from Jordan Hulme. Some smoke in the

corner on the far side. I thought that was my half Thai -- half-time

bygone! Not with the new kitchen Gary Neville paid for! Certainly

not. Stephen O'Halloran, who began his

career at Aston Villa. Won two Republic of Ireland caps at left

back. His manager told me it was strange sometimes when he shouts

instructions onto the pitch and he thinks, hang on, he's played

international football and I'm telling him what to do. You can get

caught out as a manager screaming and shouting, but he knows what he's

doing. Recently played in the Championship for Coventry. Still

only 27. Now a qualified physio in Manchester hospitals. You can

imagine the build-up all week for the Salford City lads. Going into

work, thinking about the big FA Cup game being televised on Friday

night. You know your mates will be watching. That's why I've been so

impressed with them. Scott Burton was dreaming of the

fairy tale moment. He was. Salford have managed to calm their

expectations and play a really professional way. You can tell

they've been well drilled and they aren't over award by the occasion.

Burton and Howson got in each other's way. No problems for Jay

Lynch. He has played in the Football League with Accrington. I'm sure he

harbours ambitions of playing there again. It was a simple pass, that.

If he takes more care with it, Izale McLeod was in one-on-one with the

keeper. Despite the appeals, that is Notts County plus throw. They arrive

here unbeaten in four league games, their best run since Ricardo took

charge. In his own words, he does love a tackle, Scott Burton.

Poole. Salford throw. I have to say, we have seen some unbelievable

tackles in today's game. It is an art that has gone out of the game.

Thankfully we have got a referee who has seen that they are not dangerous

and fully committed and he has allowed play to go on. Hulme kept it

in. Stopforth, a player with great energy, looking for a free kick but

there was none forthcoming. I think he has been watching the Premier

League too much! De Silva improvised quickly.

When you look cannot discount the here, they've got nothing in the

middle to build it up, so their only option is to do that, to go along.

He white players go right up against the centre forwards, and the

midfielders go there. If they're going to get back in this game, they

need to find a way of developing some more passes in that midfield

area and bringing more players into Blake. A touch of class, quick

thinking. He has sent in Hardcastle. He went for goal himself! The

teenager. He ignored the claims of Hulme and Poole. He was unlucky.

Great bit of play from Danny Webber, I have to say. You can't fault him

for having a go at goal. I didn't see any real leer options for him to

square it across the box. The only thing you would say is shoot that

across the goal, the keeper parried it out and you have options. But

good Blake from Salford. -- good play.

The 17-year-old again, Poole, looking for Webber. Tremendous

header from Chris Lynch. Stopforth. Salford Central in that

this is a good spell. Can they make it count?

Stead was held back, there. Oh Halloran knows what's coming. He

does. Normally you would say that was not such a bad foul. But he was

getting himself into a dangerous position and it has allowed Salford

to get back into their shape. The first Salford name in the book is

that of the Irishman. Aimed to Stead. The challenge of Chris

Lynch. He just had to keep his eye on that.

At one point he thought that might be sneaking in, but he had it

covered, he knew where it was going. As we can see, the floodlights

obviously right in his eyes as well, but he does really well, no problem

here whatsoever. Lynch again with the powerful

header. The silver has stayed down after the challenge. To say he is an

uncompromising defender, Chris Lynch, is perhaps something of an

understatement. -- de Silva. He has fully committed, Chris Lynch, and

the referee has allowed it to go on. McLeod is using his strength,

this time fairly. Stead waiting in the penalty area but he couldn't get

any contact. There wasn't much Jon Stead could do with that, to be

honest. He cuts into his left hand side, he does well to win it. As he

comes inside, you think, just try and find your partner, don't just

lash it across the box. I don't know what he expects Jon Stead to do with

that. It is a Salford throw. Ricardo Muniz

looking a bit anxious. Someone you know well from your time at

Tottenham with Martin Jol. I do. Martin Jol brought him in as a

skills coach actually, which was a bit of a -- and ordered job title at

the time. Webber, Lynch with the chance to cross. But he used to do a

lot of work with Edgar davits and some of the other midfielders. It

was fun, you knew he had a lot of interest in the game and he would go

on to management as well. -- Edgar Davids.

Lynch attacking it. Another crunching challenge from the Salford

skipper. This is aimed towards Lynch again

and let me tell you, Chris Lynch, Salford born and bred, he is a gas

engineer who works permanent nights. The managers were telling me

sometimes it is a midweek game and he doesn't even have time for a

shower, he bashes straight to work. On a Saturday game if it is an away

game, he's only had -- a couple of hours sleep, and yet the coaches

said he is always the best player, he is the current layer of the

year. That is just brilliant. You hear top players talking about

tiredness. Back to Chris Lynch, I mean, the level of commitment...

These managers and the lads are asking for that and that is exactly

why he is the captain, he is the example for all his players to live

up to. I trust he has booked tonight off! Surely his boss has allowed him

that. The way he is playing he might get a pay rise as well! Jordan Hulme

was trying to stay onside. Smith did not get there. Salford continued to

press here. O'Halloran's cross. Away by Audel. Lynch thought about the

challenge. It has broken to Hardcastle. Poole. Good try. Great

play, that, from Poole. Such awareness around him of what is

going on when the ball comes into him. He knows already he has got the

space to turn and get it on to his favoured left foot. We see as the

ball comes in. Turn. So unlucky. So unlucky. A good bit of play. He has

shown today in this first half, Poole, he has got real quality. They

thought it was in! Your former England team-mates. They were

willing that ball into the back of the net. Poole, foul. Wanted to take

the free kick quickly. Notts County might be happy for half-time!

Exactly, you mentioned earlier about the pressure building and Salford

Central blood, they may be disappointed that they have played

so well but they are going in at half-time and not one up. They have

been absolutely brilliant for this first 42 minutes. Lynch with the

free kick, too strong for Houston. -- Howson. It's not just endeavour

and workrate and commitment, there are levels of quality in there as

well. They have popped it around. They try and work it around the box

as well. They need to get that level of finishing up a bit, that level of

quality, and they will get the goal. The Notts County manager looking at

his watch. Here is Webber. Lynch, so desperate to get the

challenge in again. It's a free kick to Notts County. This is a very

important part of the game. Salford need to switch on here and get tuned

in. Get back into your shape and make sure you don't concede at this

point in the game. It's not a foul either. It's not a foul, it's a

brilliant challenge. He has come on the right side of him and won the

ball cleanly. You don't need to be giving that as a yellow card. That

is a poor decision. The referee has had a good game so far but if he

sees that one again he will be disappointed. Jay Lynch organising

his wall in the Salford City goal. The final minute of normal time at

Straight against the wall. Pace saw one for the Salford player.

of the first game of the first round proper of this season's FA Cup.

Terrific defending from Houston. He completely nullified him and stayed

on his feet and watch the ball and won it at the perfect time.

Quietly confident that they could ask Notts County some questions.

Rightly so. Rightly so, they will be delighted with the 45 minutes that

these lads have put in. They have worked hard and shown quality. They

missed a great chance early doors. They should be one up, they should

be at least one up. So many positives to take into the second

half. Notts County second-best at the minute. He will be absolutely

delighted with what he has seen. Jordan Hulme with probably the best

opportunity. Salford have risen to the occasion, they just haven't got

the gold to show for it. At the break, it is Salford 0-0 Notts

County. There you go, a big Friday night in

the FA Cup. We will be with you for the second half shortly. Not much

difference between the sides so far in that first half. It has been tied

with chances at both ends and I think the Class of 92 will be pretty

happy with 0-0 at the break. It has been physical as well, three yellow

cards so far. Everything to play for. Smiles from Gary Neville and

Nicky Butt as well. Let's bring in Ian Wright and Trevor Sinclair who

have been watching that, pitch side. Ian Wright, that was a fascinating

first half. No goals but Salford City well in this game. Absolutely,

I think they've been better in every department really. One disappointing

thing is that I don't think that crowd realise how much their team is

on top in this game, they just need a bit more from them. Java, I don't

think Notts County are up for it at all. I think this is a massive

opportunity for Salford. Salford have won the 50-50 balls all over

the park. I think they have been the better side. Notts County are going

to go in there and I think they will get a dressing down from the

manager. It's impressive they have looked so comfortable on this

occasion. We said we may expect them to be overawed but there has been

none of that. Absolutely not. They have had seven or eight chances to

Notts County plus one. They have not finished their chances and they

might regret that in the second half. Let's talk through some of

those chances. Jordan Hulme, the first player they paid money for,

?3500. He had a couple of good chances. The first one, you can see

the bodies, they are getting bodies round the ball and this, if you are

being overcritical you could say try and lift it to get it to dip over

the keeper. But I think he has done everything right there. This one he

should have taken his opportunity to shoot a lot earlier than he did.

Sometimes in a game like this you are just thinking I want to get it

done. There he has had the opportunity to shoot. And one more,

you will see this one as well, Trevor. He never quite gets the

wrong side of the defender. He hit the target but it is not a hour full

enough shot. The previous one, the toe poke was on. He was nice and

composed in the box. Watching with these do, they both said toe poke

quite loudly! Lewis Hardcastle had chances in the game as well. Really,

they should be ahead, shouldn't they? They should be, and that is

the problem. They are going direct and getting bodies around it. For me

they are hungry there. They are getting on the ball first. It opens,

really good feed. Great feet, there. He is just trying to reach it and he

hasn't quite got it. They have hit the target with them but I like

that, Danny Webber holds it up really well but he is so alive to

take the free kick early. Notts County in big trouble straightaway.

Anything across the keeper, there. Especially through his legs. The

goalkeeper could be massively in trouble. For me just aim for the big

side of the goal there, Dan. The Salford dressing room, do you think

they will be happy there? The two guys managing. They might be, there

will not be any ranting and raving. It is reverse psychology, you either

go in and say they are there for the taking, or you say well done, but I

think they will go for the former. Notts County were not keen on having

a camera in the dressing room and I think it's the right decision

because they will be getting a dressing down. One occasion in the

45 when they gave County players a bit too much space in the box. It

bounces kindly for him. The keeper gets nowhere near it. I think they

deserved that, to be fair. They have been the better team and competed

all over the field. If you asked the manager, he would just be happy they

are in it. I think it's going to be an interesting second half. Great

play from the left-back. Great spin on the player he had in front of

him. Fantastic defending. Super ball. So, they are playing well. We

spoke to Gary Neville before the game and he said he was a bit

worried about the physicality, but the referee has actually let quite a

lot go, Andrew Madley. It has been fruity on both sides! I liked it.

This is lower league football. They are right to do that as well,

Salford. Notts County don't look up for it. Salford City three all of

those and I think the referee has done well to let some of them go. I

think John will be very happy with the commitment of some of the

players going into these challenges. The Salford player definitely wanted

more than Notts County. I hope they can make a goal, get the crowd going

for a start, because I think they deserve it. You feel like Notts

County, they need to get that goal sooner rather than later. My fear in

the second half, some of those lads at Salford have been to work today

and they are going to start to start a tyre. It will be interesting to

look at. We were hoping for some magic and there was some at the

giant-killing? Like an illusion, it takes a lot of talent, a lot of

practice and the odd trick. And suddenly it can become reality. Let

me show you a very simple game. Do me a favour, just look through these

need to introduce this young man, Nicky Butt. Great first half, you

are in it. Yes, it was a good first half. The lads did well, I'm really

happy with how they played. But you have to take your chances. Will

fitness come into it? Some of the lads have been at work today,

slightly different from the Notts County players. I hope adrenaline

takes over and they keep going to the end. But it's about taking your

chances when you get them will stop if we take them, we will be in a

good position. I think we were the better team in the first half. Will

they keep playing direct and missing the lines out? I hope so, I think it

is quite a clever ploy from the coaching staff to say get in their

heart and do well and try and score goals. The next chance we've got to

take and that will define the game. Nice to hear the views of Nicky

Butt. Gary Neville and Paul Scholes also hear the night. A man whose

goals got Salford City promoted last season, people have seen you in the

documentary but you are injured at the moment, your media ligament --

your medial ligament. I think apart from the goal it was a really good,

perfect first half. Pressing high up the page, the tempo has been really

good. You could not tell which one was the higher team at the moment.

After 15 or 20 minutes they consciously slowed the game down

just to try to get a hold on it and try to get a view passes together.

We've just been -- they have been overawed by us. Our tempo and speed

and passion, I think they were shocked. You have worked on

defending set pieces in training but Notts County have not had that many

chances. People might be watching non-league football for the first

time but you are a decent side. Yeah, we don't just a team out there

and cross our fingers. The manager and the coaching staff have

obviously been watching Notts County and you know, we have worked on our

own set pieces as well. I'm just hoping that we can one of those

chances really. A shot of the dressing room. Who are the talk in

there? We have seen you in there having a view to many chats at

half-time and full-time! Who will be saying the wise words in there? To

be honest, it's difficult to get a word in with the managers. All the

lads will be gene each other up. -- geeing each other up. I know it's a

cliche but we have got 11 leaders in that dressing room and we will be

trying to finish the job tonight. You feel the crowd can play a part

in this second half. I was surprised with how quiet the crowd are. The

guy behind me has been shouting expletives but apart from him... The

crowd just need to get them going because I think that is all they

need now. Gareth, one word, one answer, what do they need to do in

the second half, simple as score a goal? I think so, I think one goal

is going to win it. If we get another chance we've got to shoot

early, not let the keeper take another stance, just catch him

off-guard and I think we will win it 1-0. The teams are out, let's rejoin

our commentary team. COMMENTATOR: Welcome back, thank you

very much indeed. Salford have had their say and they are out first in

the second half. What might have been there message in the sulphur

dressing room at half-time? I think, more of the same. -- in the Salford

dressing room. Just maybe a bit more quality in that final third in terms

of striking the ball almost. They have got through but their strikes

at goal have not really had the power you're going to need to get

past Roy Carroll. More of the same, keep working hard and hopefully that

goal will come. Let's hope so as far as they are concerned. Notts County

hoping to avoid all those kind of headlines tonight. They have only

won once in their last seven FA Cup games. Do you expect something of an

improvement as far as the League 2 club are concerned? If the manager

has not looked at that and thought we are definitely the lesser side in

this game today and he would be kidding himself. A lot of that has

come down to the fact that he may have gone with two upfront. It has

been a tough day upfront for Alan Smith and noble. They have been

missed out a lot of the time by the bag four. The three in midfield are

working so hard for Salford, they are making it really hard for Notts

County. Somewhere along the line Notts County are going to have to

try to get these full-backs into the game because that is going to be the

only way they can stretch this three-man midfield for Salford. That

could be something the manager will have spoken about at half-time. It

will be the visitors, 15th in League 2, in all blue, Notts County, to get

us under way in the second half. No from either manager, incidentally,

during the break. Will there be a change in the scoreline? Will there

be another FA Cup story to be written?

Here's straightaway James Poole curling it to the back post and

whether! What a start for Salford City! Less

than 20 seconds into the second half and Danny Webber, their top scorer,

has his ninth of the season, and it could be a Golden Goal! We mentioned

Poole in the first half and he was the 1 causing so many problems.

Notts County switched off for the start of this half and when you work

so hard for it you think get your head up and that is exacted what he

does. He faces him one-on-one, goes by him, that is the quality we have

been asking for, puts it in the right area, and Danny Webber has

done that for years, does what he does best and puts it in the back of

the net. Brilliant. Exactly 17 seconds into the second

period. Danny Webber, who got both goals in the second qualifying round

when Salford City were 1-0 down. Scores their first-ever goal in the

first round proper. And what a start to the second half. We spoke about

what would have been said at half-time, what he would have wanted

from his players. He couldn't have asked for more than that. Exactly

what he wanted. They deserved that for the first 45 minute display they

put in. They've worked hard. I said they didn't deserve to go in at 0-0.

Notts County need to wake up now. They are in a very, very tough FA

Cup tie and they could go out. 19 goals last year as they climbed into

the division above, step seven of English football. His ninth goal of

this season. His most important goal in a Salford City shirt. A man who

played over 20 -- 220 times in the top two divisions of English

football for the likes of Portsmouth, Watford and Sheffield

United. A month ahead of his 34th birthday. As the team from the

Northern Premier League Premier Division in front.

Poole's part in that goal cannot be underestimated. It can't. Work rate,

endeavour, taking the chance, but also the quality we've asked for

from them. A little bit more quality in the final third and he's put it

on a plate for Danny Webber. He was never going to miss. It was because

of the delivery. He's had a very good game, James Poole.

Understandably, the Notts County players look a little

shell-shocked. Right from the restart stop they are. They'll be

wondering who will step up for them. The management will be looking

at the bench and wondering what to do to change the situation. It's

been coming, they've got themselves to blame. They need to step up to

the plate. They've lost every challenge. Salford have won every

second ball. Thoroughly deserved. The owners know there's an awful

long way to yet. -- to go. Three of the part owners of the Class of '92

two. 112 major honours between them. They'll tell you they get just as

excited watching this time as -- this team as what -- as winning any

of those medals. I've changed my pronunciation of

Salford. It's my Nottingham thing. Apologies to Twitter followers and

all that now all. It's that boy James Poole. Look at that delivery.

They call that the corridor of uncertainty. Nobody knows what to

do. The keeper doesn't know whether to come out, the defendant has an

want to touch it. Danny Webber sticks it in the back of the net to

put Salford 1-0 up. The most experienced player in their team.

Never played in the Premier League for Manchester United. He played

three times in their first team when the likes of Neville, Giggs, but an

Scholes were there. I played against Danny Webber in the FA youth cup

when he was at Manchester United and I was at Nottingham Forest. I was

playing centre half and he did score, but we did win the game. He

was a handful and he's making the same runs today he was making then.

I spoke to him before the game. He says he's not getting tired. He

looks to have just as much energy as he did then. The fairy tale not

within touching distance yet, but all going according to plan for the

managerial duo who got two promotions in three years at

Ramsbottom and then got a call out of the blue from Gary Neville on

their mobile phone to bring them here to Moor Lane. And to have their

part in this latest chapter, which could get even better.

You could see his intention on that occasion. He didn't have the

execution. Again, time in the box, he's got composure. A lot of bodies

in there. He wanted to pick someone out. You could see him thinking,

shifting it. In the end, because it was getting so tight, he thought he

would have a go. It's all positive from Salford at the minute. All

positive. A crowd of 1400 in here tonight. When they began this FA Cup

journey in the first qualifying round against Whitby town, there

were 255. They were within half an hour of going out of the competition

at the very first hurdle. Here are in their seventh match, they lead a

team 59 places above them in their seventh match, they lead a team 59

places above them is a footballing pyramid.

That's the problem for Notts County. Right there. As the ball comes out,

it's a tough one and you might say he can't bring it down, but even

when he hooks it on, nobody is there for the second ball and floods of

pressure keep coming now. Poole, an FA youth cup winner in his

Manchester City days. Went down. Looked hopefully, shall we say, to

the referee. It wasn't a free kick, wasn't a penalty. He's a handful,

Jordan Hulme. A driver by day. He pins him. He pins him in the box.

There's nothing in that whatsoever. Defender stays on his feet and he's

stronger. To be fair to Hulme, he wasn't complaining, got back on his

feet and carried on. De Silva has a problem for Notts

County. A player released by Crystal Palace in the summer. He's had

enough of those hard challenges from Lynch! He's had to take three of

them. Very, very tough challenges and one of them must have hurt. We

flinch that two of them from up here. -- we flinched at two of them.

A throw to be taken by Stephen O'Halloran, who dropped down from

Stockport in the summer when he got the call to go and have a talk about

coming here. I understand he was met by Ryan Giggs, which blew him away.

The next thing he was a Salford City player. The hosts have a corner. I

think that will get the job done. Giggsy turning up and asking you to

sign for them. Yeah! Salford corner goes short. In from the left foot of

Poole. Away by Smith. Neatly done by Burton. Audel ahead

of Chris Lynch. That time he didn't quite time the challenge, the

Salford skipper. But look at the numbers getting back into the right

positions. Well drilled, looking strong, looking fit. It is a foul.

The ball was given away in a difficult area where Notts County

could have broken. But they nullified it and they are back in

shape and the problem is sorted. I have to mention the three

midfielders. That. I've not seen many players run as hard as they are

at the moment. The Notts County change. Kyle De Silva off and Adam

Campbell, who left Newcastle in the summer. He started the first 14

games for Notts County. He's on in his place. Played five times for

Newcastle's first team having made his debut at 17. Still only 20. He

will be on the left-hand side for Notts County. In each of the last

three seasons, Notts County have gone out of the FA Cup to teams

below them in the footballing pyramid. None as low as Salford

City, though. Step seven. Neatly done by Hulme. He has a clear

sight of goal. Jordan Hulme! Mightily close to a second. Still

alive with Webber. And then cleared by Audel. That was absolutely

brilliant play from Jordan Hulme. The quality he's shown there. A

little flick to get himself into that position. Composure to cut

inside. So one lucky not to find the top corner. -- so unlucky. The front

three have been brilliant throughout the whole game. Look at this. Cuts

inside like he's not even there. This is a better angle. Look how

close this is. Agonising. He fully deserves a goal as well. Fantastic

play. They thought they had doubled their advantage. Well on top here,

Salford City. They are, but the managers will be aware Notts County

have two strikers that have scored goals in the Football League, a lot

of goals between them. They'll be worrying that if they get one,

they'll put it away. They will definitely want a second goal and

they've just come close to it. Salford are going for the second

goal. They are not resting on the 1-0 lead they have and I think

that's the right thing to do. Good challenge from Dawson. Andy

Dawson, who is the elder brother of Craig, who plays in the Premier

League for West Bromwich Albion. I'm sure he'll be watching and rooting

for his brother tonight. He is at Old Trafford tomorrow, just across

the way, with West Brom to take on Manchester United. They've kept a

few clean sheets this season, West Bromwich Albion. Hopefully that's a

good omen for Salford. Ricardo Moniz deep in thought, the Notts County

manager. His first experience of the FA Cup, as it stands, will be a disc

-- bitterly disappointing one. Nicely flighted from Campbell

towards McLeod. Calmly dealt with by Steve Howson.

Brilliant play. Absolutely brilliant play. It's not just launched

forward, it's played at a good height, wrought down by Poole, who

brings Webber into the game. It's good play. -- brought down.

Sheehan to bring it forward for Notts County, the 29-year-old. He

was the underdog at Chelsea last season in the FA Cup. It's a role

reversal for him tonight. I've been very disappointed with Notts County.

For a team that trains on a daily basis...

They've not been Noble to put two passes together. Technically they

should be better. They train every day. You can't tell the difference.

Salford could be in the same league. Five forward here.

Stopforth thinks he has a corner and the referee agrees. I was mentioning

those midfielders. The midfield three have not stopped running this

whole game. He's popped up on the left wing, the right wing, won

corners on both sides for his team. He looks a bit tired, hands on hips,

but I'm sure he will suck it in and get his energy back and go again

because that's what he's been doing throughout the game so far.

McLeod to bring it forward. The 17-year-old, Lewis Hardcastle,

stopped him in his tracks. No foul by Webber.

Poole played over 100 times in the Football League for Hartlepool. He's

stood out like a sore thumb today, James Poole. Work rate. You will

always feel like he's the one. If there's going to be anything in

terms of quality, he's the one who's going to provide it. He's put in a

real shift, along with all his team. I just feel like James Poole out of

the front three has really shone. Currently studying a degree at

University, James Poole. Still only 25.

No way through for Elliott Hewitt, the Welsh U21 international at right

back for Notts County. His first season from Ipswich. He might have

an opportunity to launch one of his long throws.

It came off a Salford head. Howson. Notts County corner.

These other situations... I think there's a foul. These other

situations you would expect Salford to have had to deal with in their

league. They deal with that one. Wild effort from Audel. Ball coming

into the box constantly, having to deal with long balls and tonight

they've looked comfortable dealing with long balls. It was no different

from the long throw. Jordan Hulme still wondering how he didn't make

it 2-0. He absolutely deserved to. Such a great effort. I don't know

how he gets the shot off. He shifts it and hits it so quick and gets

great power on it. From here it looked like it was going in. We are

right behind it. So I'm lucky. -- so unlucky. Notts County are making

another change. Alan Smith's night is over. Jimmy Spencer, the

23-year-old striker. Six foot four. A change in formation, Steve. It's

been a tough shift in midfield. He has gone up front, actually. A tough

shift in midfield for Alan Smith, almost through no fault of his own.

He's been getting missed out. The defence have not been passing it

through midfield. The ball has been going directly into Salford boss

back from two. In midfield, when the game is like that, it can be

disheartening at times. Dawson a cross with the

interception. Only his fourth game for Salford City tonight. He's had

almost 18 months out. He's worked so hard. He's literally had to rebuild

his knee after a cruciate knee ligament injury. He recently got

playing again. What a fourth game back for him! Chris Lynch just

making sure his boot is back on. Salford free kick. One thing I would

say from Notts County's point of view, I think putting Jon Stead on

the left wing is not a good option. He's always played up top through

his career. Could Salford look at exposing that situation? He's never

been one to be bombing up and down the wing. No disrespect to him, it's

just not the best way to use him. He was the king of the underdog in this

competition last season. A chance for Webber again. Denied on that

occasion by Roy Carroll. The strike is linking up again. They always

know where the other is. James Poole chesting down to Webber earlier,

this time a flick on from Poole to Webber. They really have a good

connection, those two. Howson hit that and the goalkeeper

has to get there. Howson, magnificently, keeps it out! Steve

Howson denying the equaliser for Notts County. There was a point

right here where the goalkeeper is coming out and you are thinking stay

on your line. A recipe for disaster. That is unbelievable. He stays with

it. Chases it down. Hammered away by Jordan Hulme. How

important could that moment be from Steve Howson? The 30-year-old

central defender. He's being required again here and wins it in

the air. Talking at the other end about the quality and the goal

scored by Danny Webber. That's as good as a goal. Brilliant play from

Howson. It's a Notts County corner. It was

so good because a lot of the time in that situation, the natural reaction

in a lot of players is to give up. To say, a mistake has been made and

we aren't going to make it, it's 1-1. At no point did that enter his

mind, he was always on it. What a challenge again. This time by

Burton. No way through for Hardcastle.

Salford are making their first change. It is going to be their

goal-scorer, Danny Webber, who departs. Richie Allen, the

29-year-old community Karch -- coach, is going to replace him. He

got the extra time winner in the third qualifying round against

Bradford Park Avenue. Another player who cost money last season from AFC

filed. Six goals in 13 games this season for Richie Allen. Danny

Webber has been absolutely brilliant today and he deserves a rest. He's

shown that level of quality that Salford have needed at times. You

can tell he's come down a few leagues to play. This is that

opportunity. When he doesn't switch off, that's what I'm talking about.

A lot of players would have said that's a goal, but he said no. He

could have made better contact, but... That is inches away.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Roy Carroll came out. Came out very effectively.

He was caught as well in it to the, the Notts County goalkeeper. --

inadvertently. Brave from Roy Carroll. James Poole has every right

to go for it, the ball can be won. I think he catches Roy Carroll late on

the leg. He's got every right to go for this, James Poole. He catches

it. Roy Carroll does brilliantly for his defence. James Poole is one on

one. Thankfully for Notts County, Roy Carroll is on top of the

situation. The captain is back on his feet. Before Danny Webber

departed, Roy Carroll denied in the second goal. He's made a couple of

saves today and he's had to because Salford have been at it. Tough for

Danny Webber to get it across the goal, but good link up play between

the front two. You would expect Roy Carroll to save that. He got his

angles right and stopped it. No way through for McLeod.

Time is of the essence for Notts County. Inside the last 20 minutes.

Super run from a Bora. Salford bodies in the way, Notts County

corner. Notts County starting to get into the game now. A good run from

Aborah. Nobody wanted to commit the tackle.

Cleared by Lewis Hardcastle. What a mature performance from that

17-year-old. He's been fantastic. We mentioned he's come down from

Blackburn Academy. Young lad. What stands out is what I imagined

before, he wasn't just happy sitting with the luxuries of being at the

lovely Blackburn training ground, playing on lovely pitches, he's come

here to learn the game. It's an education. This will be a huge part

of that he will be able to use in years to come. The owner is looking

more apprehensive. Richie Allen against Edwards. Looking for some

support, the substitute. He's beaten all three of them! Allen again. What

a goal! Richie Allen, the substitute! He has doubled Salford

City's advantage! What an impact from the 29-year-old! That second

round is within touching distance from the team in level seven of

English football. Goal of the season. Give them the trophy now.

That was absolutely phenomenal. Get the ball in the box if you can. Now

you're thinking you are in trouble, you need support. He's the only one

who knows what's going on. Look at that for a turn. Box it in and gets

it back. What a finish that is in the bottom corner. I mentioned how

important he was in getting into the first round. An extra time winner in

the third qualifying round against Bradford Park Avenue. He's been on

this pitch less than four minutes. What a telling contribution. Salford

City leading 2-0. Look at them celebrating. That's why they bought

the club, exactly why they bought the club, for things like that. We

saw the business side on the show, but it's for the love of the game.

For everyone involved, that was a special moment. Notts County looking

for an immediate reply. Terrific block from Howson.

Stead! He didn't get the last touch. Chris Lynch was throwing himself in

there. I can't tell you how well Chris Lynch has done. He's used all

his experience. He's on the wrong side of him, but he knows he has to

get some form of contact on him to stop him. He makes more difficult

for Jon Stead to get any contact. It's now or never for Notts County

to try and rescue this. Spencer's header is well wide. Therefore

hundreds support is behind that goal looking on in disbelief at the

moment. -- 400 supporters. Rightly so. It's been a poor display from

the league side. I don't remember one real bit of quality they've

shown today, or anybody in that Notts County stand. They are well

within their rights to feel disappointed with what the team has

put on today. It's not been good enough. He'll be looking to make

another change because he's got 15 minutes now to have an impact on

League 2 team is unfolding here. But you cannot take anything away from

Salford City and their performance. You can't, I think that is the main

thing. Usually in these big scalps its down to bad pitches, bad

weather. Another courageous challenge there. A bit of luck here

and there... But today it has come down to, at the minute, Salford have

just been the better side. Long from Hewitt. Campbell could bring it

under control. Notts County corner. Six years ago Notts County were

knocked out of this composition by Kettering, who were then in the

for Salford. The managers will be thinking on the sideline, get

here. I think he has been the best player for Salford tonight. It's

difficult to release single someone else at the moment because they have

all been fantastic, but hopefully he is not hurt too much. I think it's

just a spot of cramp. He has put in so much hard work, a real shift

today, along with Webber and Hulme when he was on. That cramp can hurt

and it looks like a heavy pitch to night. If he goes off hopefully

whoever is coming on will be right and ready. The man who is coming on

is a fitness instructor. One with Football League experience. The last

man to come on was Richie Allen. What an entrance. Wow, what a view

that is to watch it. I hope his friends at home have got it on

record because having one that you can savour forever, that skill is

brilliant. The 1-2 as well, the linkup play, it is good play all

round. To be able to do that in that situation, say give it to me and I

give it you back, and then the finish to top it all off! Is goals

last season prompted Salford to secure his services. -- his goals.

only a matter of time before one drops to a Notts County player in a

simple position and he sticks it away. They need to somehow get out

of this pattern of playing and get the ball up into the attacking

Just his fourth game for Salford tonight. It is an injury that I know

a little bit too well as well. He must have some character to beat in

that situation working hard and rebuilding his knee every day. I'll

tell you where he works every day, the Inland Revenue! We had better be

very nice to him! To give him another match!

-- better give him Man of the Match! That is only about five minutes

away... Notts County, the world's oldest club to still be playing

professionally, on the verge of being knocked out by the

Cleared by Howson. Then O'Halloran. Aborah but that was too strong, into

McLeod. We picked out Stead and McLeod at the beginning of the game

for their record and their experience in the league. Salford

City have marked them out of the game. A lot that has come down to

Dawson and Howson, who have been absolutely brilliant. Everything

that has come into the box been headed away. They have not allowed

any balls to come into their feet where they can cause damage as well.

Just collectively, Hulme at left-back clearing the ball... Every

time that comes into the box, there is always an answer to get it away.

And again, this time from Dawson. Aborah. Every Salford City player

back inside their own half. In from Jenner. Too strong for McLeod. That

is what has surprised me most about Notts County. These are professional

players. At some point you think that's not working, let's get in

behind the full-backs. But they keep knocking on the same door and keep

getting the same answer. In it goes again. Dawson is there

again. Hardcastle. It ran away from Audel, and this is

running away from Notts County. And they still can't celebrate, they

still can't relax. 20 months since buying this club. And just ten

months into their time for that managerial duo. They told me they

lost their first game and they weren't sure it was going to work.

But this would be their greatest moment.

Mike Edwards for Notts County. Up towards Spencer. He is beaten to it

by Dawson. This is McLeod. And that's a goal kick. Brave defending

once again. They have been absolutely solid. Any time there has

been any trouble coming down either side, they have covered each other

really well. Patting each other on the back saying well done. They

deserve that, they have been absolutely outstanding. That

tonight. Good pressure from Allen. In from

Aborah. Oh! Lynch lost it but he prevented the corner, though. So,

Jermaine, you look at the scoreline now, 2-0, and you remember that old

saving clearance at 1-0. How important was that? It was a

complete game changer. If that goes in, you can almost guarantee the

pendulum swing the other way into Notts County lost favour, and it

would have done. At clearance at that point in the game, the

importance of it was there for all to see.

Forward from Howson. Aborah. Putting the pressure on Aborah again.

Absolutely, you know, the work rate he has put in in midfield,

Stopforth... Nonstop running. Spencer trying to get to that. Off

the head of McLeod. Campbell. Noble tried the curling effort, Liam

Noble. So, as we head into the 90th minute,

time for Jermaine Jenas's Man of the Match. Well, unfortunately I can't

give it to the whole team! The two centre halves have been brilliant,

but James Poole is the man who really stood out for me tonight. In

the first half he created a lot of problems. He got the assist for the

first goal. He was the assist in Notts County -- the thorn in Notts

County and a plus side until he eventually went off with cramp

because of how hard he worked. Ten G Moses, the son of the former

Manchester United and West Brom player is going to get a brief taste

of the FA Cup first round, next time the ball goes out of play. . They

have played it to perfection today, the management. At the right times

they have told there -- their team to sit off. They have been

brilliant, the management tonight, in their management of this

particular game, and obviously the players.

Short, to Allen. Hulme. Cut out by Jenner. Aborah.

Four minutes until full-time, four minutes until the Salford City party

can begin. It's just a little altercation down below us between

Jenner and Hulme. All a little unnecessary. Roy Carroll has

sprinted right out of his goal to get involved as well. That's the

last thing they want, Notts County, 2-0 down. Just get on with the game.

That's what happened. Jenner with the clearance. And then one of the

supporters... Stupidly did that. That's unacceptable, yeah.

So, Tunji Moses to come on. Lewis Hardcastle. What a night for the

17-year-old. I spoke about the education of players at Salford City

rather than being at Blackpool and he completely deserves this round of

applause. This is a night he will not forget. He will be able to take

this through his career and learn from nights like this. Brilliant

decision for him to stay and I'm sure the management are delighted.

He deserves all the hugs and applause he is getting. Brilliant

header from Dawson and then cleared by Chris Lynch. Salford will never

have seen a party quite like this. In the class of 92... Here is

Mwasile, he might fancy a turn... Very unlucky. You could just feel

that his legs were dying on him a bit as he was breaking through. But

he had a dig, only a minute left, you might as well.

Notts County Ladies and in. It completely does. When you are 2-0 up

and someone does that on the opposing side, there's no better

site! You think, you try and hit that coming out of the sky, we will

take that all day. Just run down the clock and seal this historic win now

Wherever this Salford City story takes them, this is a chapter they

will never forget, and the FA Cup has provided it yet again. The team

that had never even been in the fourth qualifying round of the FA

Cup before this season, the side from level seven of the footballing

pyramid, are through to the second round and they have knocked out the

team 59 places above them. The world's oldest club to still be

playing professionally have been dumped out by the semiprofessionals

of Salford City. Speaking to Nicky Butt before the game, he did say to

me that they fancied it today and he thought they would win today, and I

can see why, now. I can see why. There will be a lot of teams looking

at them in the next FA Cup draw and thinking I'm not sure I want to go

there! Fully deserved. This little pitch invasion they are getting now

and the applause from the crowd, brilliant all-round. Great from

Salford City. What a night and certainly one they will never

forget. The Salford City party can officially begin! Salford City 2-0
