First Round Highlights The FA Cup

No matter where in the world, at whatever level, every club has

dreams. First round of the FA Cup against

Notts County. 59 places between them. One game, one night. Good

effort. A chance for Hume... Less than 20 seconds into the second

half! It is still Jordan Hulme! Mightily

close. The goalkeeper has got to get there. Magnificent. What a goal! A

magical moment of history. Wherever this Salford City story takes them,

this is a chapter they will never, ever forget.

And with me, ready to delve into the weekend's big talking points,

And before every first round cup tie, clubs across the country

paid tribute to those members of the Armed Forces lost to war.

First stop - the Memorial Ground, in Bristol,

as League Two Rovers took on a side 75 places below them in the

football pyramid - Chesham United from the Southern League Premier.

Chesham had managed just one away league win since January.

Many of Chesham United's players were still in nappies when the club

last played in the first round proper of the FA Cup 21 years ago.

They will be sure to remember this tie, though, as they knocked out

League Two side Bristol Rovers, a club 75 places above them in the

football pyramid. Opportunity Knocks for the visitors, who play in the

seventh tier. Brad Watkins was brought down by Tom Lockyer on the

half-hour mark. David Pearce, though, could only watch as his

penalty kick was saved by Lee Nicholls. Rovers had appeals for a

penalty turned down, an apparent handball. The League Two side were

controlling play but failed to make the most of a double chance.

Jermaine Easter denied before Ellis Harrison missed the target. Time for

Chesham, then, to change things up. 43-year-old player coach Barry

Hayles, remember him? He received a warm reception from the home crowd

as he came on as a second-half substitute. Something of a cult

figure at Rovers during the later 1990s, but this time he was plotting

their downfall. It worked, the Buckinghamshire club unlocking their

defence, Ryan Blake firing low from 20 yards. This time, Lee Nicholls

should have done better but Chesham were in dreamland. Rovers had

chances to pull level late on. Harrison's effort parried away

before Easter's dumping shot was pushed out by Shane Gore. --

thumping shot. Celebrations all round for the non-league side as

they booked their place in the second round. These Rovers fans,

though, still had something to smile about. Barry Hayles will forever be

deemed a hero by the League Two club. He is now a Chesham 12. Did

you think the shock was on when you came here? Yes, the manager gave us

a game plan and the boy stuck to it and we knew the longer the game went

on, we would get a chance. The manager said go there and just

hold the ball up and catch them on the counter attack. Blake fired his

shot and we were absolutely buzzing when it went in. At your age, do you

enjoy the celebrations even more? Of course, it could be my last one, who

knows question mark but I'm looking forward to the next round, I can

watch the draw tomorrow. So Barry Hayles on a memorable

return to the Memorial Ground 17 years after he left the club, time

has gone so quickly, but well done to Chesham, a terrific result

considering there are 75 places between them, the resources and it

was away from home. Yes. Bristol Rovers haven't got a great home

record, we hasten to add, but there will be some upsets this weekend and

if you know about the non-league pyramid system, you can see why they

got results, because some of the clubs that got results have spent

good money, a lot of money, and were able to buy good players this year.

Chesham don't come into that sort of able to buy good players this year.

Chesham don't come into that sort of list, so you look at the way they

have played this season, the form they have been in, this was a turn

up. The key moment early on, when they missed a penalty. Yes, I think

from that setback, they didn't recover pro while, because Rovers

came back into it. It was a clear penalty, no debate about that. And

once he steps up, I think it is David Pearce with the penalty, and

Lee Nicholls with a good save, in fairness. Barry Hayles came on and I

think he calmed them down, got them settle. This, he struck it well

enough, really good strike, but I think Lee Nicholls could have saved

it and it will disappoint him from Rovers' point of view. You look

where the ball finishes when it hits the net, it is not in the corner, it

must go through him. The standout from the game was they had about 25

shots on goal, Bristol Rovers, but how many were gilt-edged chances?

Not many. That is how well Chesham defended. Yes, well done to everyone

concerned with Chesham. League Two strugglers Newport County

hardly had the ideal preparation for their trip to non-league

Brackley Town today. They arrived late

for their first round cup tie after the coach driver left his

keys locked inside the team bus. They managed to get to them

in the end - but at some cost. Seeking only the second ever FA Cup

first round win in their 125 year history, Brackley Town certainly

represent everything that epitomises this great competition. Part time

players, including Birmingham bin man Richard Batchelor, among those

seeking to write their names into FA Cup folklore. Five of the Newport 11

are low knees, all granted permission to play, including Zac

Ansah, and Arsenal graduate at one time, on loan from Charlton. Like

many today, it is his first FA Cup tie.

Good Pastor John HYPHEN Lewis -- good pass to John - Lewis. And it is

a penalty. He believes it was nothing more than a man-to-man

tonsil rather than an illegal challenge, but the referee says

penalty. 15th minute, Newport County off take the lead. Lennell

John-Lewis, nice and calm. And the supporters behind the goal, you can

tell, have made the trip from South Wales and a joyous early goal to

settle down the side who represent the Football League.

Now, there was a little nudge there. He looks longingly at the referee

and suggests the contact on him might be similar to the one that led

to the penalty. Lennell John-Lewis is onside. One by

Graham. He is still going. And he has scored. He wrote the challenges

and he has just kept on going. The question about offside and he picked

himself up, found there was an opportunity to score and he did. And

the smile of -- on his face is that centre half in the side who rarely

scores, but he has an FA Cup goal and he has provided Newport County

with terrific advantage before half-time.

Settles for a corner. They have had a few corners in this second half.

Four in total. In swing towards the goalkeeper. I

said it was in swinging and it is almost going to go in. And it does!

And it counts as well. Luke Graham turns away celebrating, Walker does

the same. One man not celebrating is Joe day. The in swinger, with the

breeze behind it, and it somehow found its way creeping over the line

after the goalkeeper couldn't feel good. Makes a real hash of it. It is

off the line and Graham and Walker went for it. Who got the final

touch? I think it is Graham. The Football League side in control in

the first half, it has not quite been the same in the second. A third

goal, though, would probably sea lift once and for all and they have

won a corner. -- seal it. It breaks for Bowden. Off the line

brilliantly. Just over ten minutes to go and Bowden's shot cleared off

the line. A 3 -1 lead would have sunk Brackley Town. He thought it

was there. Brilliant. No question that it was over the line. It was a

really decisive block. Do they have anything left in the

tank? Listen to the Brackley Town supporters roaring them forward. Get

it upfield, they cry. They have a throw in. Fourth minute

of added time. Just a goal away from being in the second round draw. It

is a terrific header and they have done it! Curtis McDonald! Brilliant

header. The full-back up from the back, glances it into the corner of

the net and they are in the FA Cup second round draw and Kevin Wilkin

is absolutely delighted. Stoppage time almost up, the full-back creeps

forward, he has just about got enough energy to get to the ball,

and the flick of his head, into the corner of the net. And Newport

County's 2-goal lead wiped out in the last moments of the game. To

scoring the FA Cup is magic. 2-0 down, looked out of it at half-time,

then we nicked a goal and you start believing you can get the result. I

took a chance, went up there, it doesn't happen often, got my head on

the end of it. Yeah, buzzing. I am not surprised. Terrific afternoon

for Brackley Town, they looked dead and buried at half-time, you

couldn't see the fightback coming. If you stay in the game, that is

exactly what they did. They didn't let it get away from them, they

continue to plug away and when they were 2-1 down, that clearance off

the line kept them in the game and they gained momentum. That made all

the difference, potentially 3-1 and instead, there they were of fighting

back with two good headers. There will always be times when things go

for you and against you. Here, we see the part of the wind played in

the game, because we kept going to Kevin Wilkin all the way through the

game, and even at half-time, you were surprised at how much the wind

changed the game in his side's favour. The keeper probably wants to

Parmlid over, but there is not enough pace on the ball to get that

power on it, but look at that for a bullet header. Great header. He

arrives from deep, his momentum is with him and no chance that the

goalkeeper. Two teams that haven't done particularly well on the

domestic front and that is probably what Brackley would have wanted.

They were at home and would have thought, this is our opportunity,

but going back to Newport, a tough start to the season, there might be

an opportunity there. Newport haven't won at home since March, so

that will be competitive to say the very least.

Our next stop is bit of a throwback and the artificial surface of the

Gallagher Stadium, home of Maidstone United, of National League South.

They'd won their last nine games in all competitions as they took

on injury hit Yeovil, second-bottom in the Football League.

Commentary from Martin Fisher. Alex Flisher made his 200th appearance

for the club last week. He and his fellow striker are both carpenters

by day. A window fitter, an insurance salesman and a forklift

driver also make the starting 11. Daryle Ward makes his Yeovil debut

after joining them on loan. He played in the final for Millwall.

This is only the second time that Maidstone United, under their

current guys, have reached the first round of the FA Cup. They got the

better of Stevenage from league two in a replay. That was a lunging

challenge. Jakub Sokolik. The referee once a word with the Yeovil

Town defender and it is a red card. Jakub Sokolik sent off with seven

minutes on the watch. If this was going to be a difficult afternoon

for the league two site, it has got more difficult. It was a heavy first

touch by the defender but as he tried to retrieve it, he is lunging.

The soul of the fruit is raised and the positioning of the referee could

not have been better. I do not think he required the protests of the

Maidstone players to encourage him to find the red card. It was coming

out anyway. Now an enforced reshuffle.

Maidstone's throw. Alex Flisher winding himself up. The short is

wide from James Rodgers. It fell invitingly for the man who scored

the winning goal for Maidstone couple of weeks ago.

The referee has given the free kick for the earlier challenge. He has

been in charge since last April, just five wins in his last 24 games.

That is in. Wes Fogden for Yeovil Town. The ten men take the lead. The

free kick was a difficult one, but they'd Morgan need to get involved?

I am not sure. It was a bad clearance. Wes Fogden got enough on

it. The goalkeeper was losing his balance going to his right, the ball

was going to his left. Hesitation. Alex Osborn is in. The

goalkeeper has brought him down. Krysiak could go for this. It has to

be a red card. It is, I second red card. You could not write this

script. Artur Krysiak centile for the foul on Alex Osborn. Yeovil Town

are down to nine men. Hesitation between Roberts and the goalkeeper.

Krysiak connects as Alex Osborn came in. There can be no debate that that

deserved a red card. Chris Weale, who has only made one appearance so

far this season, he has a role to play as they looked to reach around

two of the FA Cup. Driven wide. That whistled past the left-hand post of

Chris Weale. I am not sure the goalkeeper even moved. There are

still 30 minutes to go. Maidstone can try and find an equaliser.

Before that, they have got to defender Yeovil Town corner, the

first of the game. Ryan Blake sin with the corner, and outswinger.

Somebody on the goal-line has it out. Ward, on his Yeovil Town debut,

close to making it 2-0. Brilliant work on the line. The defender got

his chest in the way. The defender forced to concede the corner. The

sixth corner for Maidstone United. The delivery against the post, and a

bit of juggling from Chris Weale. It Yeovil Town's lead remains intact.

It is a sea of bodies that claim for this corner. It bubbles of the post.

Oil with the header, I think. -- Coyle. It is in, but I think the

flag is up. It is offside. His joy will be short lived. The flag was

raised on the near side. What drama in the very last minute of the 90.

The ball in, Collins' header. You could maybe see that he was half a

yard ahead of the defender. He might have used his arm to push it home.

Chris Weale is struggling. In the end, he has done enough. His face

almost matched the colour of that jersey. The cross almost caught him

out. It stays 1-0 to the league two strugglers.

Have you been more proud as Yeovil Town manager? Idlib like we had to

decline. The players were fantastic. They kept the shape we talked about

and worked hard to close down the man on the ball all the time. We

probably only had one key saves to make in the 90 minutes. With the

sendings off, it made it harder. It drew us to deep. I thought that it

was in the box when Alex Osborn was fouled. Sometimes it goes for you

and today it has not. Massive relief for Yeovil Town and Paul Sturrock.

They had to do it the hard way. They did. If you had said before the game

this would happen and it were going to get a victory out of it, they

would have taken that. It was a spirited performance. Something we

have not seen a lot of from Yeovil Town. They were up against it. They

negated the Maidstone thread. We looked that the chances, there were

not apply thorough. What did you make of the red cards? The first

one, it is the angle of the referee. As Jakub Sokolik goes in for the

challenge, look at his body. The referee a good position. He is off

the ground, out of control. He is sent off for the wiki has made the

challenge, not the challenge. I do not know what Roberts is doing. It

is like when you have run the wrong man out in cricket. The wrong man

has had to make the foul. You have got to clear that. Don't deny men,

they are up against it but they saw the demo well. No debate. At 1.I

thought that the pitch might have added to the confusion. Add some

points, the ball's momentum did not carry on, it did not bounce. 20

minutes for Yeovil Town together acclimatised. Was it a soft goal in

some respects for Yeovil Town? You could certainly look and say there

were mistakes leading up to it. The goalkeeper takes a false step. He

does not get any purchase on the punch. No one reacts. By missing the

step, he cannot attack the ball. Look at the reaction from the Yeovil

Town players. Nobody closes down. It might be down to the page. It is a

misjudgement. He loses his fitting and they cannot react. He gets up

and on it. Jay Saunders was looking back with frustration, against nine

men, he could not get the victory. They had a couple of chances at the

end. Yes, but I do not think they created enough chances in open play

considering they were playing nine men. They had lots of the ball but

in the final third, they did not create. I think this is a good

decision. As he goes in, he gets on position, it is a good decision by

the assistant. As the cross comes in initially, he is not offside. The

flip after that puts him offside. It is a good decision. Maidstone will

come out of that game and think about what might have been. It was

too late in the game that we saw something from them.

The FA Cup first round was unchartered territory for National

The non-league team from Sussex were hoping to make it

an unwanted hat-trick for Lincoln of the National League,

who had gone out at the first round stage for the last two seasons.

On the south downs on the edge of Brighton is the home of Whitehawk.

It is called the Enclosed Ground but it was did the most open of cup

ties. In their first appearance in the first round, Whitehawk began as

the underdogs but soon set about Lincoln City. Danny Mills put them

ahead. Whitehawk are perched forth in the division and are playing with

confidence, epitomised by Jake Robinson as he put his side two up

inside half an hour. The tale was just beginning. Well back defending,

goal-scorer Danny Mills give away a penalty. The job of taking it felt

to Matt Rhead and that began an eventful afternoon for him. The

Lincoln City defence was not having one of its better afternoons and

Whitehawk knew it. Sam Deering made it three in the 58th minute. Add the

other end, city were having more joy. A game of head tennis was

interrupted by Matt Rhead. It was 3-2. As the late for an equaliser,

Whitehawk came at them again. Dave Martin's goal surely finished this

four minutes from time. Instead it got crazier still. Into stoppage

time and Lincoln were still going. A hat-trick for Matt Rhead and 4-3. In

the desperate effort to grab an equaliser, Lincoln City were found

short at the back. This was a red card and a penalty. For the last

word, or 30 Sam Deering. With the spot kick, into the corner, he sends

the goalkeeper at the wrong way. That seals it for Whitehawk. What a

game for the supporters. I was saying to the lads, I had lovely

blonde hid a year ago and now it is turning grey. Fantastic, thoroughly

deserved. We were better than two goals better than them today. The

fans were amazing. You see fans like that in non-league, incredible. We

should say well done to Matt Rhead on his hat-trick but he has been

outdone by the Whitehawk's performance. You do not have the

rise that they have had in recent years without being able to put your

hand in your pocket. They have got caught in conference South. They

have had to tag along with the finances to be competitive with

other clubs. They have lots of players who used to play in the

league. Even at that level, it is really deep. 1342 were there to

witness it, including this little girl who experienced her first time

at Whitehawk. That is what it is all about.

Right, let's find out how the lowest ranked side in the

competition, Didcot Town fared today against the side 96 places above

The Grecians, led by Paul Tisdale, were desperate to sharpen up their

act after crashing out to non-league Warrington Town 12 months ago.

Commentary from Adam Virgo and Ian Darke.

He won the header well. A well constructed a tag by accident. The

cross is charged on. This man has the reputation of being the best

dressed manager in the country, Paul Tisdale. That is another

good-looking one. McAllister, a great effort. Beaten away by the

goalkeeper. He has been a star so far. It was a wonderful save, it

really was. They do not defend the corner well, and McAllister has that

wonderful strike. Clinton Morrison puts Exeter city

ahead. Clinton Morrison, the old Premier League striker. It is a

great ball around the corner. You can just see Andy Ballard saying, he

is your man. Now then, what was plan B?

Ari Lovely run from we love. On and on. What a save that is by Leigh

Bedwell. Brilliant from the young PE teacher. It was a great save any and

from Leigh Bedwell, good strong left hand. Coming into the last 20

minutes, this is where the fitness of the league side comes into play.

Here is France's. Can he finish it? Black. And he makes the save at his

feet. They are claiming offside, it is the skipper that allows it to

come in. Alex Nicholls, Tom Nichols. Still not away.

And the header of the bar. Morris earned... And scrambled in. Exeter

City have the second goal they are looking for. Tom Nichols. And Exeter

have clear water. Leigh Bedwell has every right to be frustrated,

because he makes a wonderful save and when you make that kind of save,

you need one of your defenders to really get on that second ball.

first involvement. Grand plays it across the face of goal. -- rant. It

is touched in, Alex Nicholls with the third. Well, it is great

all-round play. The substitute coming on and making an instant

impact. It got caught trying to play offside. Leigh Bedwell coming out,

really in no man's land. We knew it was going to be

difficult. There have been a few cup upsets recently, we watched the

Salford game, so we know what it is that this standard and I have played

a few games here, and I know what it is like to be at this level, so fair

play to Didcot, but the boys did a professional job and I am pleased in

the next round. Well spoken by Clinton Morrison. I know Paul

Tisdale was stung by their defeat at the weekend and that was a

professional performance. Paul Tisdale got a response from his side

today. It was ashamed to Didcot, it didn't quite happen and Exeter were

too strong for them. It was nice to see ex roommate Clinton Morrison

scoring. He only rings you when his cause, so my biannual phone call

will come this week. Pleased for him, but disappointing the Didcot --

when he scores. Five more first-round ties coming up now,

involving the size putting their reputations on the line -- involving

league sides. Starting with Braintree town, up against Michael

Appleton's inform Oxford United of League Two.

Braintree knew it would be tough to bridge a gap of 27 places to Oxford

and sure enough, it was the League Two promotion chasers who broke the

ice. Paloma dodo -- Palamo Dowd's searching cross found Taylor. He was

then heavily involved in a missed opportunity. Some good feed, a nice

backheel, but looks of anguish all around. And the non-league team made

Oxford pain. Davies shoots and scores! Braintree town are level and

it is the skipper! And it was to get even worse for Oxford. Johnny

Mullins already booked Tom appeared to bring down Michael Cheek. The

dressing room beckoned. Down to ten men, Oxford faced a stern

examination. In fact, they very nearly won it instead. Liam Sercombe

saw his shot come back of the post and then right at the end, Braintree

almost pulled off the shock they craved. Taylor miles from distance.

Braintree close, but the cigars stay on hold.

Maidenhead had an FA Cup winner on board the team bus to the potteries.

Alan Devonshire lifted the old trophy as a West Ham player in 1980,

but his bid to mastermind a Maidenhead upset at Port Vale came

unstuck. Byron Moore, the phrase nutmeg comes to mind. But

Maidenhead, some 62 places below them in the league system,

responded. David topping's free kick, Ben Wright should have buried

it. Only introduced from the bench minutes before, Sam Foley could have

won it for the League One side, but instead, his shot clipped the

crossbar. A costly miss. Deep into added time, they were made to pay.

Save on the line, back out... Gault a Maidenhead! 1-1 X -- and

pandemonium. Bradford City conjured up some of last season's finest FA

Cup magic, famously beating Chelsea and Sunderland on their way to the

six ran. Aldershot were aiming to bring them

down to earth. Tony Jones was watching. Stevenson. Williams forced

to make a smart save. McMahon with a free kick. Almost fell for Billy

Clark. And still Smith hasn't been able to hold on. Helped on to the

top of the crossbar. It is a lovely turn by Billy Clark,

magnificent save by Phil Smith. Bradford huffed and puffed but

couldn't find a goal. As the night drew in through October, things got

darker and darker for FC Halifax town, in the league at least. They

lost six out of seven National League matches, twice conceding

seven, and we can soon found a way through. Gary Thomson's fourth of

the season was simple. Their next one was anything but. Sido Jombati

has never scored for Whickham, that was a good way to put it right. The

Wanderers were all soon trying to outdo each other. Max Kretzschmar

took on the defence by himself and won. And in stoppage time,

Amadi-Holloway finished things off nicely for them. Halifax had plenty

to concentrate on in the league. 71 places separate Gainsborough

Trinity from Shrewsbury town, but today, the difference was just one

goal. Shrewsbury were given several scares before going ahead thanks to

a moment of quality in the second half from Irish striker James

Collins. Trinity were fearless, just not sufficiently ruthless.

We saw a couple of battling draws, non-league side against league

opponents, not least Maidenhead. We know what Alan Devonshire was like

as a player and I suppose his players almost did something for

him, but you spotted something in the build-up to their equaliser.

Yes, I think Mr upward might have been doing a bit of an impression of

Ashley Young. I am not sure that is a foul. I know they say there are

chances to clear it, but the ball never goes out of play after the

free kick, which was clearly not a free kick. They do well to keep

winning the second and third phase, they missed their chance but they

get a bit of luck from Dickinson and it is a deserved result, so no one

would begrudge them the goal. And for Braintree town against Oxford,

tell me what you thought about their equalising goal. They couldn't quite

get past the ten men at first. Oxford played well, but again,

Braintree stayed in the game and this finish from Kenny Davies, what

a goal. It is composed finish, 20 yards out and just strokes it into

the corner. Lovely goal. At any level, that is struck and it goes

high and wide, but he has got his line and site but it brilliantly.

Well, it's a busy day of Football here on the BBC,

with Match of the Day 2 coming up a little later this evening,

Well, let's get back to yesterday's FA Cup first round ties, then,

and no other non-league side could boast a better giant-killing record

against league opposition than Altrincham of the National League.

They'd sent no less than 16 league sides packing over the years.

League One strugglers Barnsley went there hoping not to be

Watching this one was Nigel Adderley.

Former manager of altering, Tommy Docherty, a famous name in the FA

Cup, once described this club as the Manchester United of non-league

football. -- Altrincham. Great save by Davies. Jake Moult is the

long-range specialist in the Altrincham team. Scored from fully

30 yards in the National League last week and that one was closer in, but

Adam Davies had to make a really good save.

It is given away. Need some support. He goes down, but no

penalty. And in fairness to Winnall, not a huge appeal. It was careless

from the full-back. Was bad enough to force Winnall to crumple to the

turf? Winnall is onside and it is a sharp

save at the near post and with three minutes to play in the first half,

it is the first real save the Altrincham goalkeeper has had to

make. And it is Barnsley, in the black shirts, playing left-to-right

in the second half and now defending. Crowther may go all the

way. It is a fine save, but it is in. Damian Reeves. And seconds after

half-time, Altrincham ar at it again in the FA Cup. Crowther doing well

to initially Rob Pearson and although it was turned aside by

Davies, Damian Reeves was alive to the opportunity. Poaching the chance

and Altrincham have the lead. Altrincham have carried the greater

threat throughout. Is growth challenging. What a chance

and what a miss. -- Isgrove. The man on loan from Southampton should have

brought it Barnsley level. Winnall doing well to find him, but it was

the second challenge that just did enough to put him off.

Headed away, Wilkinson! Wide. And that they have been the chance for

Barnsley to save themselves. And in these circumstances, they simply

have to go in. Sinnott shows his frustration but

now is the time to try and get back and organise. Altrincham three

minutes away. Winnall again challenging. It is a

rugby scrum inside the six yard area and somehow, Altrincham escape. It

may look a bit wet and miserable, but his team are on the verge of a

great result. That is it! 21 years on, Altrincham

are FA Cup giant killers once again. How much did you enjoy that? You

enjoy it now. You are thinking to yourself, while the game is going

on, I mean, I actually missed the goal, it came back quickly after

half-time, and I will have to look at it on the BT. I was told about

it. The last 25 minutes, you can tell Barnsley are trying to find a

way back in, you know you've will be under pressure and you think, is it

going to be your day and it turned out to be. I am delighted to say we

have been joined by the scorer for Altrincham, Damian Reeves. What was

it like to be part of a fantastic afternoon for Altrincham? It was, we

haven't had a great run in the cup for the last few years, so we said

before the game, let's go out and give it a go. You have a great cup

pedigree at the club. Barnsley, your 17th league opposition to go out of

from there. Who do you fancy next? To be honest, anybody. If you get a

team from a lower league, you have a chance of getting into the third

round, but you have the opportunity to go up against some big names. We

not the only sides on Saturday flying the victory flag for the

non-league teams. It's a leak on's bottom club were

looking to the FA Cup for a spot of light relief they were to be sadly

disappointed. Eastleigh arrived under relatively new management and

in good heart, five victories in seven games since the new manager

took the reins. An upset waiting in the wings. Eastleigh Julie

delivered. It went wrong for Crewe after the break. The goalkeeper

rushed out, arguably a Rush of blood. He certainly saw red. Perhaps

it was something in the home team's have time TV because the replacement

suffered a similar calamity. Just a yellow card, but significantly a

penalty. Time for Ben Strevens to give the keeper the eyes. What is he

going to do, he licks to send the keeper of the wrong way, he does.

Ben Strevens has scored four Eastleigh. Eastleigh had the

victory. Despite late efforts from Crewe, Eastleigh's first ever

competitive meeting with a league club set up the potential for

another in Rome two. An historic victory for Eastleigh. They have

only gone and done it. Top of the National League, Forest Green Rovers

have ambitions to play in the football league. Taking on Wimbledon

was a chance to test those out. They began well when Darren Carter put

them ahead in the six minute. Wimbledon have history in the FA Cup

and got back into this midway through the first half. This was

Callum Kennedy's second in two matches. Wimbledon could have taken

the lead, but when Charlie Clough find a weird week -- the woodwork,

it seemed like Wimbledon were booked in for a midweek game in The

Cotswolds. Then Elliott Frear scored. Have Forest Green done it

again? What a great weekend it turned out to be for Forest Green

Rovers and Eastleigh. Two sides with clear muscle behind them. Let's talk

about the dramatic late winner for Forest Green. It is not really a

shock, the investment has gone into the club. Perhaps the goalkeeper

could do better. He does not adjust his feet. Take nothing away from the

non-league side, an excellent finish. The manager has got them

playing well. Yes, he has. People have spent money before and it has

not worked out. You cannot do more than what he has done. For a few

seasons we have known that Eastleigh are major force to be reckoned with.

They took on Crewe. It was always going to be a banana skin for them.

They have financial muscle. I am not sure that is a sending off. The

goalkeeper tries to get the ball. That is a tough decision. The

goalkeeper does not agree with it. Obviously it is a penalty. He just

does not see. He has made a mistake and he is desperate to make up for

the mistake. He is trying to get the ball but it is a penalty. We played

Eastleigh in pre-season and they played 11 players in the first half

and 11 in the second half. They have a very big, very deep squad. It is

full of quality. Another side that can more than punch their weight. It

is the first time they have beaten a football league side in their

history. We have been given an appeal by the club. We have a plea

from one of their players. He had his shirt taken away from him in the

pitch invasion which ensued. He needs it back, they are playing

Dover ranches do. Let's round up five more first

round ties from Saturday, including First up, Dover Athletic

of the National League Stourbridge were 2-1 winners over

These days, inhabiting the National League, Grimsby have known better

days, but when Conor Townsend some free kick in from way out, this

looked like it might be one of them. Grimsby Town to the bench and the

arrival of Padraig Amond had an immediate effect. He maintained his

composure and doubled the lead. Saint old bands tried to bridge a

gap of 36 pin it places and they found a foothold in the tie. Luis

Figo fan is enjoying his moment in the FA Cup sunlight. -- Louis Theo

Farnese. Grimsby set about crushing the uprising. It was a lovely goal

finish smartly by Jon-Paul Pittman. Grimsby use their substitutes well

and another, Marcus Marshall, added a fourth. The sense of an upset

happening rapidly dissipating. Saint old and is had long abandoned any

plans for the second round. 5-1. Grimsby march on.

If leaked to Leyton Orient were nervous about the challenge posed by

Staines Town, they settled down fast. -- League Two. Ollie Palmer

had very little left to do. This time, Dean Cox did the honours. He

was clearly grateful from the help of the fullback. The two sides are

separated by three levels of English football, and pretty soon, three

goals as well. Ollie Palmer with the finish. This was not a day to be a

Staines defender, with the possible exception of Darren Purse. He got a

souvenir goal. Dean Cox's second was the pick of the lot for Leyton

Orient. 4-1 at half-time. John Marquis got the fifth in the 89th

minute. Therefore Staines could escape across town, Sean Clohessy

find the time and space to add a sixth. Very professional from this

There was no fairy tale for Barwell who were playing in the FA Cup

proper for the first time in their history. Welling United of the

National League proved too strong for the seven secure side. Ricky

Wellard slid home after this effort rebounded off the post. Barwell

battled but Welling United made sure of the victory was the last kick of

the game, Michael but carry on as a second-half substitute had plenty of

space to stroke home from close range to spark ecstatic celebrations

from the London club. This was drama between Northwich

Victoria and Boreham Wood. It was soggy and the place needed a left.

Jordan Williams provided one. Northwich Victoria, the underdogs in

front. The conditions were ripe for an upset and no one was more upset

than the Northwich Victoria goalkeeper. Junior Morias with very

little sentiment. To rub salt into the goalkeeper's wins, his opposite

number made a heroic save. Russell brolly and lead denying how to take

the game to a rematch. Great goals. First are bridge,

congratulations to them. They are through to the second round. They

played against a Dover side that have caused lots of problems for

teams in the FA Cup. For the position therein in the league, this

is a great achievement for them to take on Dover. It was excellent from

them. This is the first goal, Chris Lait. A lovely finish. Stourbridge

play the game in the right way. What Karl Hawley knows about that, I am

not sure. I am not sure that as a penalty. That is not much contact.

The yellow card and a read. -- red card. The knock the ball around.

Karl Hawley can make sit at the top level. Well done to all of them at

the football club. Having seen the likes of

Vinnie Jones, Stuart Pearce and Jermaine Beckford turn out

for them over the years, National League South side Wealdstone were

looking to their current stars to Trying to set up George Moncur. This

is George Moncur. He tried to work it through a crowd of Wealdstone

defenders. They cannot stop the shot from Macauley Bonne. The pressure

from Colchester pays dividends. The League One side or in front.

Hudson-Odoi has swapped wings. A lovely run. It is a penalty to

Wealdstone. He appears to make the most of it, but there was clear

contact across his chest. Wealdstone have the chance to draw level,

Jefferson Louis. Jefferson Louis scores. Wealdstone are right back in

this FA Cup game. The goalkeeper goes one way, the ball goes the

other. The The corner is a deep one. Headed

down and in, and it is Hudson-Odoii who has made it 2-1! As it is

cleared by Briggs, straight against the knee of the Wealdstone man.

Briggs hits it with real power and all of that power is diverted back

past the goalkeeper and Wealdstone are in front. Bradley Hudson-Odoi

didn't know too much about it. The care many defenders are back in

Wealdstone blue. In towards Bonne! Second goal for Macauley Bonne. Just

able to get away from his marker there.

Colchester will come forward in numbers again. George Moncur trying

just seal Colchester's passage through to the second round of the

doesn't half hit this. And it is 2-6.

Tony, at one stage, when you went 2-1 down, you must have been

thinking, hang on a second. Yes, when you think about the number of

opportunities we created in the first half, we have had about ten

opportunities and it looks like it would possibly be one of those

games, but I thought the second half was a thoroughly professional

performance and we deservedly won the game. You have got to take

gambles, and in the end, we did and possibly gambled a little bit too

much and consequently, it has ended up six and I feel we have let

ourselves down, to be honest. There is no chance I am living without

this ball, it is mine. It is not often someone my age comes here and

scores a hat-trick in the FA Cup and then to get four, I thought it is my

ball. Doesn't get much better for a 20-year-old to score four goals in

the first round of the FA Cup. Before we talk about Bonne,

Wealdstone gave themselves a great chance, 2-1, they dared to dream. I

was surprised he said they let themselves down, they had to go for

it. That wasn't the issue. We have seen it time and again, part-time

footballers against professional, sometimes fitness does tell, we saw

it with Exeter earlier and that was another case. What a few days for

Bonne, on Tuesday he scored a few goals in a local club fixture and

today, four. Not many score four goals in the FA Cup. He looks like a

goal-scorer, his movement with his back to goal, he knows

instinctively. This one, just across the defender with their header.

Again, arriving between, he knows the position to get to. That is the

one that tells you he is a goal-scorer, he is on the line of

the shop and he is thinking, I will get this, I am not having him

scoring. Just his positioning. And the manager knows him from youth

days, and look at the defence, Colchester has not looked too clever

this season, but he will need his goals this season. Yes, it is easy

to say the defences and good, so we will score, but you do that as a

team. Another whistle stop tour now,

involving six ties, starting with Worcester City,

who memorably turned over Coventry A year on,

they had another trip to League One They knocked out Coventry City this

time last year, but a trip to Sheffield United posed a pretty

sizeable mountain for National League side Worcester City to climb,

and so it proved. It didn't help their cause when Che Adams was

brought down with less than 20 minutes then. Jose Baxter with an

early chance to enhance his reputation, which he duly took. It

stayed that way until late on but with less than ten minutes to go,

Worcester hopes began to drain. Campbell rise into the sick child

box, Conor Sammon turns the ball in -- into the six yard box. Is that

Worcester City's chance gone in the FA Cup? Yes, it was. Right at the

end, the blades are demonstrating their cutting edge again. Freeman

bundles the ball over the line, game, set and match to Sheffield.

National League North side AFC Fylde braved the down for 55 minutes

before Millwall silenced their opponents. Aiden O'Brien used his

head in his right boot to put the League One side ahead. Lee Gregory

doubled their lead on the hour mark at the persistence and precision

from Sean Williams. AFC Fylde were back in 82 minutes later, Alex

Whittle giving the visitors some hope. But Steve Morison put Millwall

into the second round. Aiden O'Brien this time turning provider for his

team-mate, two minutes from time, to seal a 3-1 victory.

Cambridge United are currently without a manager, so six tier

basing stone town might have arrived at the Abbey Stadium with hope, but

Cambridge were not keen on being the fall guys. Missing by a fraction

early on. The hosts wouldn't need to wait much longer. Jeff Hughes

finishing of. -- off. Basingstoke aren't having a vintage season but

have their moments. Later on, they would get closer still. Of the post

and out, as ultimately work Basingstoke.

National League North hopefuls Stalybridge Celtic travelled with

expectation to Doncaster Rovers but it didn't take long for the League

One side to rather dampen their fireworks. And with a man named Andy

Williams in their cup team, it was perhaps inevitable Doncaster would

enjoy some Magic Moments and three minutes in, the first one duly

arrived, and well taken it was too. Stalybridge did their best to level

it. Jack Higgins may have had a sleepless night reflecting on his

fine chance. Either side of the keeper would have done. And to make

him feel worse, there was to be an encore from Andy Williams. 20

minutes from time, he cashed in on a defensive mistake and punished it

like an old stage. A businesslike display from Darren Ferguson's

Doncaster, who lived to fight another cup day.

2008's FA Cup winners Portsmouth secured their first victory in the

competition since 2010, beating non-league Macclesfield town two -

one. Adam McGurk opened the scoring on three minutes, a well worked team

effort. Pompey's lead didn't last long. The goalkeeper caught napping

and Kristian Dennis was there to pounce for the silk men. Murphy came

to the rescue later, denying Danny Whitehead, who fancied his chances

from distance. It was Pompey who scored the winner on the stroke of

half-time. Stevens drives into the area. McGirt! Chaplin must put it

in! McGuirk finally drives it home -- Adam McGurk.

Hartlepool's most recent FA Cup memory was losing to non-league

Blyth Spartans, so there was obvious determination not to let that happen

against National League Cheltenham town. The battling spirit was

apparent here just before half-time. It helped get the ball through to

Kudus Oyenuga, who scored his first goal on his first start of the

season. They needed resilience after the break, particularly from their

goalkeeper. Only Trevor Carson's repeated her role it stood in the

way other Cheltenham equaliser. Last season, the Robins were relegated,

while Hartlepool stayed in the Football League, and they had a go

at revenge. Leigh born close to forcing a replay, but that was the

last action of their cup campaign. So that is all the non-league side

covered, Barber Tiger takes place tomorrow and there is no doubt the

tone was set on Friday, when Salford City got the competition off to a

flyer against Notts County. Danny Webber, scorer on the night, is with

us. Have you recovered from what happened on Friday? Just about, it

was quite a surreal night, nobody expected us to even be in the first

round and to win, nobody gave as much chance to win and everybody was

delighted, it was a great atmosphere and we enjoyed ourselves. Everybody

feels they have been on the journey because of the recent documentary,

they know what the club is all about, what was it like to be part

of? It was exciting and as people did see the documentary, I think we

gained a lot of people who were interested because of that. A lot of

people who are not into football joined us on the journey and have

enjoyed the experience as well. It is great to be in the dressing room

and part of something moving forward. You couldn't have timed

your goal much better, could you? That was the plan, I think. First

half, we had threatened a little bit but the belief of getting the ball

in the back of the neck was what we needed serve 15-20 seconds in the

second half, it was a great ball and I just had to scramble it in. We

know you have been around, you started at Manchester United, you

have been in the second tier for a few seasons. Were their nerves in

the dressing room? A lot of nerves, but the managers did a good job in

the way they made us channel it. A few of the older lads help the

younger lads channel it, so the blend was right, the nerves were

there but they couldn't wait to get on the pitch. They didn't show it

with their backs to the wall, they made some terrific goal-line

clearances. Stephen Harrison in the second half, we thought it was a

goal. I don't know how he got to this, but the fact that he even did

it, most people wouldn't even chase him back. How many defenders do you

see give up the ghost in that position, that is the desire. Or

scoring an own goal. What about your management team, the duo, they are

very interesting, they remind me of Hale and Pace. Did they celebrate

with the boys? Everybody did, John O, Anthony Johnson, he went home, he

had his daughter's party the next day, but we all had a drink

together, Bernard, his family and some of The Class of 92, so it was

good fun. So they weren't policing your drinks this time. Let's have a

look at the second goal by Richie Allen, what a strike. What the

build-up to get himself out of his corner. There is a moment where you

think he has lost it and he is getting crowded out, but he does

this kind of thing in training quite often, a little piece of magic just

to get him out of it and all of a sudden, you'd think he has got a

chance and he took it so well, the 1-2 with Jordan Hulme and a

fantastic goal and definitely warranted the attention. I have

known of him from while, he is from Preston, he has been in non-league,

had a few issues, but he has real talent. Look at the reactions as

well. There is always another perspective, it is wonderful, three

players who have achieved what they have achieved... You look at Notts

County, it is a good bit of skill but she would be disappointed the

King at that, your team with three players around him -- you would be

disappointed looking at that. It was symptomatic of Notts County all

night. You were magnificent and they simply weren't very good. But that

reaction is phenomenal from Gary Neville, you would think they had

seen everything. Paul Scholes said it was better than winning in the

Champions League. What did The Class of 92 say to you? They were just

delighted, it was more emotion than the words they said. They came in

and they were so happy. Paul Scholes came in and was dancing with the

lads in the dressing room and Gary was just delighted, you could see

that, so it was good for everybody around the place, not just the

players. It was just a very good night. Finally, apart from

Manchester United in the third round, who do you want in the

second? A couple of my old teams. Portsmouth would be a good one,

Sheffield United, but anybody really, because it is the magic of

the FA Cup. Thank you for popping in. Let's see how four more Thais

panned out, starting with the 1987 winners Coventry City against their

former landlords, Northampton. OK, so Coventry-Northampton may not

be on everyone's list of great derby game, but it means plenty to these

two sides. After a flurry of goals in the first 18 minutes, the

Northampton fans were in the pink. The cobbler stickers step in the

right direction when this free kick evaded everyone and find the net.

Coventry have suffered a fall from grace since winning the cup in 19

87. Jacob Murphy should he was not going to give this one up easily.

That effort counted for nothing. Marc Richards, the Northampton

skipper, leading from the front. Richards. Coventry City took their

foot off the gas. Northampton lead, 2-1. League One high-flyers

Gillingham were knocked out of the cup while League Two strugglers

Stevenage. Justin Edinburgh was outdone by his former Spurs

team-mate Teddy Sheringham. Both won the FA Cup as players. Steven

Schumacher game the home side the lead with a terrific strike from 20

yards after a well worked corner. -- gave the home side. Chris Whelpdale

made it two, heading home from close range against his former club.

Stevenage rounded off the winning stoppage time. Armand Gnanduillet is

onside. Two men are running through for Stevenage. They have played it

rounded goalkeeper. Armand Gnanduillet paps in. 3-0. Barnet are

a league below Blackpool but the buzz around this one was for an

upset. Like pool are having a wretched time. The mood will not

have been approved by the manner in which Barnet took the lead. Tom

Champion the score. It was two before half-time, Michael Gash

getting his seventh of the season. The problems on and off the field

that Blackpool are increasingly evident.

Mansfield against Oldham is not tied to set the pulses racing unless

you're a follower either one. There were some close calls. A scramble

Hugh Dan there. Neither side could force the ball over the line. The

goalkeeper twice came to the rescue of Oldham. They will have to do it

all again. We saw Northampton come through

despite their recent problems with the cash situation. That was against

Coventry City. It was a case of deja vu at this time last year. Yes, last

season, going out to Worcester City. They have been having a decent spell

under Tony Mowbray. I think it is an excellent cross. It is maybe how it

is at this stage of the season for Coventry. They get into a position

would seems to be going well, and then Marc Richards with his 10th

goal of the season. They well have missed Armstrong. As for Stevenage,

it was a battle of the Spurs' old boys. This one going against what

many people were predicting. It did not go to form. Teddy Sheringham has

had a tough start. Gillingham were second best on the day. I thought

Stevenage were very good. This may be the catalyst to get their season

going. It has been a tough start in management. You start in the way

that they have started and you think, it is only going to get

better. You have got to give him credit for starting Bernard

Stevenage. He has got to stick with them. He is not a six-week

appointment. You have got to let that go.

So to our last few games played yesterday, starting with another

former winner, Wigan Athletic, who picked up the famous old trophy

It is hard to believe it is just two and a half years since Ben Watson

etched his name into Wigan for goal with that FA Cup winning goal at

Wembley. A first-round defeat at Bury was a sobering experience in

the first round. Tom Pope headed home this cross. It was one of those

moments for goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell. It went downhill from

there for Wigan. Now goalkeeping assistance required for Bury's

second. Danny Mayor with a terrific strike. By half-time, Bury were

trembling with excitement, 3-0 up after Nathan Cameron's goal. One

foot in the second round. That FA Cup victory is written large in

Wigan might's roll of honour. -- Wigan's. That seems like a long time

ago. It is Bury's turn to dream now. Burton Albion welcomed Peterborough

United. It was the visitors that showed league form counts for

nothing when it comes to the FA Cup. Peterborough took the lead before

the break. Smith's pass finding Conor Washington who made no mistake

from six yards. Washington court head and Peterborough's second after

a defensive mistake. Jermaine Anderson's left foot finish sealed a

3-0 victory six minutes from time. But a red card put a blip on

Peterborough's performance. Baldwin playing his first game for a year

after an injury came on in stoppage time. He did not even get to break

sweat after a bad challenge. Not a particularly close tie at

Spotland. Swindon's date was some block by the first Rochdale's goal.

Mendez-Laing got a taste for scoring. More problems for Swindon

after the break and Mendez-Laing was on hand again. If that was

clear-cut, it would become more muddled. As the ball came in,

Rochdale demanded a penalty. The referee signalled for a corner. It

seemed he was thinking, consulting about the challenge. A few seconds

later, he had come up with a different idea, a penalty. Who else

to take it but Mendez-Laing. A hat-trick and 3-0. Having been faced

with that puzzle, the referee got a few seconds's rest and then he was

faced again. This time the decision was quicker, penalty to Swindon.

Nicky Josie scored but there was no way back for Swindon. -- Nikki

Josie. Scunthorpe will be able to

concentrate on the cup longer after overcoming Southend. Paddy Madden

set the ball rolling at the they 15 minute mark. 30 minutes in, Southend

found the net, Ryan Leonard with one for the scrap book. Southend might

have taken the lead. This player very nearly made a name for

themselves but it was the goalkeeper who took the glory. An excellent

save. That proved critical as Scunthorpe booked their place in

round two. Paddy Madden once again with the opportunity.

League One leaders Walsall made it through to the second round of the

FA Cup at the expense of struggling Fleetwood. George Evans found the

bottom corner after shooting from distance to put the home side in

front on 19 minutes. Nathan Pont went close for Fleetwood in the

second half but a moment of quality from Anthony Forde sealed it for

Walsall. A delightful right foot shot made it 2-0, insuring that

Walsall will be the highest ranked side in mind the's draft.

It is merely an 800 mile round trip from Carlisle to Plymouth so this

drop probably was not popular in Cumbria, particularly when Carlisle

United had not won here since 1978. When Antony Sweeney produced this

display of acrobatics the travellers had hoped. When it had only lost one

in 11 before this but they came up against a Carlisle. Hallam Hope

scored his first for the Cumbrians. They got home happy eventually.

A difficult one to Colin West Sussex had them at fever pitch. We had to

wait until the second half for the goals. John Nic White's opener was

worth waiting for, quite a finish. -- John should Nic White. -- Josh

McQuoid. Matt Harrold got the equaliser. It took a long time for

the tide to be settled. Josh McQuoid to send Luton Town into the hat for

around two. Jackie McNamara's first game in

charge of York City ended in 3-2 defeat at Accrington Stanley. Sean

McConville's clever finish put Stanley ahead. Nothing to dampen the

midfielder's celebrations. Accrington's lead did not last long

as York equalised through Vadaine Oliver. Then Accrington were back in

front. Matt Crooks picked his spot. Stanley made sure of the victory

three minutes into the second half. Billy Kee was brought down in the

area. Josh Windass knocked the ball into the back of the net from the

penalty spot. Michael Coulson's header in stoppage time was too

little too late for city. Optimism is insured supplier the

bottom of the football league. Dagenham and Redbridge began

brightly against Morecambe. The goalkeeper was worked. There was

nervous moments for Dagenham. This player was adjudged not to have
