Episode 2 The NFL Show

COMMENTARY MONTAGE: It'll be time for these teams to settle between

the lines. It's a throw, and the touchdown.

Rogers looking downfield. The wrecking crew. Unbelievable. How did

he do that? The ball knocked out of his hands. The Denver Broncos are

world champions. Good evening and welcome to The NFL Show. Here's

what's on the way tonight. Jan Vertonghen of Tottenham Hotspur gets

involved. There will be highlights of the only game in week three so

far. And a reminder of what happened in week two. What a big sack by a

big man. No risk its no biscuits. Puts his shoulder down. Beautiful

job by Daniels. To the end zone, hot, and that's amazing. LA is

victorious. Swings it, bounced off the pads and it was caught for the

touchdown. What a catch, and a touchdown. We are special, one, two,

three. Joining me in the studio as ever, two time Super Bowl winner OCN

Maura and form a new Giant Jason Bell. We will show all the

highlights of the games over the weekend on BBC Two on the iPlayer

right now. On this show we look at the NFL from a slightly different

angle and we start with the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota

Vikings, one of the games of week two.

COMMENTATOR: Sent it down and it's blocked. And it will ground to a

halt at the 45-yard line. Aaron Rodgers rolling, looking, throwing

and touchdown for Jordy Nelson. Everybody thinking run, so why not.

A little bootleg action and you get the old, wily veteran on the

outside, Jordy Nelson. Fired down the left side and hits the tight

end, Kyle Rudolph. To the end zone and Rudolph, touchdown. Caught by

Stefan Diggs, he's off to the races again. To the 36 of Green Bay. The

time-out was taken by Minnesota. Here for Adrian Peterson, going up

the middle. Picking up five yards at the 32. Peterson is down. Here's

what happened. It was the linebacker, you can see the ankle

underneath. And that's the issue. And there he was putting no weights

at all on that right leg or ankle. Bradford on play action, going to

the end zone and you've got it, Stefan Diggs, who else, touchdown.

Not only is he good, but he's savvy. Working inside, back outside and for

most quarters that means a fade to the corner of the end zone. Then

back to the post and it confused Randall. Roger going deep. And

Nelson makes the catch. Doing his best to jam communications. Rogers

this time dancing under pressure. He gets away. Aaron Rodgers does it

again. Robinson is back in the game. Aaron Rodgers throws and it's

intercepted. Didn't even have a chance to react to it. Aaron Rodgers

saw it, it came back to the one against one, and Trey Wade, after an

interesting night, it's the play of the game. Bradford sends it to the

heavens and the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers. No one

can out fight us, right? Because you have the heart of a champion. I

wonder after that how worried the Packers fans might be about the

offense despite the fact they have Aaron Rodgers. The offense needs to

get rolling. They need to keep the running game rolling but they seem

to not have the time they usually have with the receivers. They need

to get that running. It's early in the season and they can fix it. We

can pick out a couple of the results of week two. We spoke a lot about

the Washington Redskins on Tuesday. We need to emphasise that they will

be worried about their start, two home games and two defeats. They are

in a two game poll in their division. They have to improve a

lot. -- two game hole. Oakland is on fire in the offense, but the big

issue is in defense. Giving away way too many people plays down the

field. It's surprising because Jack Del Rio is an outstanding defensive

coordinator commonly supposed to have that defense in order. Houston

Texans have gone 2-0. I love my Texans, they are playing great on

defense. I was really holding on offense. We will see the Patriots

came in week three shortly. Carson Wentz delivers again, 2-0 for the

Philadelphia Eagles against a Bears defense that was a lot better than

their offense. They played very well. The thing that's impressive

about Carson Wentz, as a rookie quarterback comedy stands in the

pocket and delivers strikes. People come in the pocket and delivers

strikes. People coming all-around and delivering dead in his mouth.

Most quarterbacks like that, but this guy in his pocket, delivering

as a rookie, he's not getting skittish and he's showing maturity

beyond his years. Some of the plays of the week. You have picked out

four for us to have a look at. We will start with... I can't believe

they put me in charge, why had he put me in charge this week! We will

start with Cleveland and the play you've picked out here. We are going

to give the offensive lineman a bit of credit here. The big ugly, the

guard right here. Allow me. The guard pulled from the other side and

he will come all the way across the formation and hit this linebacker

coming in right in his mouth. It is Laos Isaiah Crowell to run right

through the hole. Look at the speed of this man running. -- it will

allow Isaiah Crowell. He reminds me of being gay kid in

Africa running to escape all the pets. -- being a kid in Africa. Have

you ever been chased by a rhinoceros? Great play by Isaiah

Crowell. Let's go to Greg Olsen and the Carolina Panthers. This is his

safety valve. He shakes this man out of his cleats, throwing right down

the seam. Greg Olsen is completely open, outrunning the safety. This is

why Cam Newton plays well coming he has that guy is an outlet. We will

look at the Detroit Lions next. I wonder what you think they might do

this season. I think Matthew Stafford is playing very well. You

see him scramble and, this is a beautiful pass by Stafford. Still in

the lead and making plays. I like the way Stafford is playing. Even

though they lost that game you still think they will do well? He's

playing mature and playing well and I like Stafford this year. We will

take one more. I'm doing all right on this so far. This is a defensive

play, Aqib Talib from the Broncos. You see him right here with a total

break on the route. He steps in front of it, not only the

interception, but this is where he is a threat, when you cant pick the

ball off and take it and score, that's why he's so valuable for the

team. If you can score on defense, you can win games. Him and do Von

Miller as well, they look strong like last season. Incredible

defense. We will talk more about the fastest African animals as you watch

this man here go to North London twos meet one of the top Premier

League center backs, Jan Vertonghen of Spurs, as they discuss the dark

arts of defending and more. You know why this is called a

football? Tell me. Because it measures one foot exactly from one

end to the other. I only learned this a couple of weeks ago. I had no

NFL games in the stadium. How do you feel about that? It's so American, I

love it. Everything is big. When the guys came, we interacted with them

and threw some football. We talked about sport. Talking about

hamburgers and Coca-Cola, we can't eat that. What are you allowed to

eat exactly? Nothing, just water. The second one is a spin. If I want

see what's going on first before they throw, those are the successful

But one time he could have a horrible game. He's got speed,

touchdown! On a corner, for instance, if you have ten corners in

a game and you score once, you've had the best game. How long have you

played? 12 years. Can you imagine your whole life, this is what you

want to do, and then four years income you are done. How old are

you? 29. You could have eight or nine years? That's a lot. Maybe five

or six. I hope. This was excellent, man, thank you so much. Are you

going to see the spin move? I'm honestly going to try it. Give me a

little spin. What concerns me about all of that,

how to defend set-pieces in football, our football this season,

is a big subject of discussion. Lots of penalties are being given. If Jan

Vertonghen starts giving away penalties, or free kicks shall you

might get the blame. I'll take it. Are you happy with that? He can

point the finger at me. That's OK. Did he not teach you how to head the

ball? He can say, I'm not going. If the team wants to trade him. I

didn't know that. I didn't know what was going on when he said that. You

can tell the team you're not going. He was like, yeah. Lots of people

might not know this. In the NFL if a team says, you are going there. Are

you going there. Have no choice. Yeah. You are getting your bags and

you are on a plane. You don't have any authority. You are going there.

They own your rights. Wow. I thought he was joking when he was saying

that. I was like - what do you mean? He says if a team is traded I can

say, no I'm not going. I'm tempted to say did you get traded to

somewhere you didn't want to go. You might not want to answer that? I

ended up in Houston. I loved that. Good you say that. We are in there

in February. You might not be invited back. One game the Housan

Texas visiting the Patriots on Thursday. They had a 100% records.

They were hoping their that Jacoby Brissett could fill Brady's shoes.

What do you expect tonight? He needs help from the offensive to give him

easy plays. Keep his confidence high to make the

plays when he sees them down the field. Taking off. Sliding at

midfield. Another first down. First penalty. This time they pick up 13.

We are talking about it. Fake pitch, then run the option. That is a good

move by Brissett there to too. Fake the pitch. Cut up inside and protect

yourself. The Patriots drive would end with a 24 yard goal giving them

a 3-0 lead. The last series they ran them at third and eight. The rooker

quarterback on the other side. You would think a little more

aggression. Make him wait longer. Everything. That's right. The ball

believe they've got the recovery here. The fumble happened before the

touchdown. His first touchdown. He gives the

ball to the coach. They love this kid. He looked fast on that run. 10

points in 13 second for New England. I do like the underneath pass. That

is going to be there for this team. You don't have to always go to the

wide receivers. Running back, tight ins. 1st of 15. They have the

Watch Collins, he's going to turn, go back, and then intercept the

incut. He is playing a deep safety. Reads

the quarterback, turns. That was not a good idea. Never there. Never

there. Had to see it would be split coverage.

He did not Collins. We have said it a lot. He tried to stick it in there

and make a great throw. Again, the Patriots have gone for

this. They kick it short. Again, fumbled.

three phases. Yes they were. Outstanding. Great game plan on both

sides of the football. They took care of the rookie quarterback. Last

week, this week, all week, every day, you know, he's done nothing but

come in here and work as hard as he possibly can to... We had three

quarterbacks to take his opportunity and learn from the other two guys.

When it was him and Jimmy. Jimmy and this week it was pretty much all

him. He's just a hard-working kid that is really dedicated to doing

what's right for the team. We knew he would be all right. We knew our

offense would be OK. They would do what they had to doe fencively and

keep getting them the ball back. That is our focus each week. We

tried to execute on a high-level. It was not a good night. Starting with

the coaching, playing, nothing was good. But it's early in the season.

We turn a page here and regroup. We just, we can't do those things to

beat a good team. Any time a team doesn't score points, you know, it's

on me. So I will examine this tape very closely. I will become a better

quarterback from this experience. But, bottom line, I needed to play

better tonight to allow our team to have an opportunity to try to win

the ball game. Let us look at some of the other week three pictures. We

will discuss a few of them. Vikings and the Panthers. It should be a

fascinating game It will be a good game we will see what the Vikings

defense is about against the Panthers. It will be a tight one.

How much has the Panthers offense improved having Benjamin as another

option? Massively. He has the best deep ball in the league. Now

Benjamin is back. He gets anything in the air. Did you say he has the

best deep ball in the league? For sure (OK. You never praise Kam. OK.

Who ever loses out of Browns and Dolphins is their season done for?

Their season was over for a long time. As they were training. Both of

them Both of them. No chance. Miami, they spent a lot of money on their

defensive line. They spent money two years ago.

Tanooka has not come to fruition he has not played well. I can't see

where they will climb out of that hole. Broncos. They are at the

Bengals. They had the Jets and Steelers. They have. They are an

experienced play-off team. I think they can pull it I don't see off.

Them beating Sinha. Are you both going Bengals? Yes. The remaining

fixture in Week 3. Rams at the Buccanrs. I like that defensive

coordinator. The Rams. Yeah. Need a good defense. They can't score a

touchdown at the moment. Wilson will have to play better than he played

last week. Four interceptions, two fumbles. He played horribly. He was

supposed to be on the rise. I expect him to play better. That will happen

with a young quarterback. It was against the Cardinals, who are no

mean team. You can makest mistakes, not that many at this point of

career. Am I a more forgiving character than you? I'm with you. I

know you are. That reassures me. Two teams that Steelers and the Eagles?

It will happen this week. Let us talk about the Giants and the

Redskins we see the matchup agains against Norman and Odel. They went

it at for the whole time. This is an old school battle. Oh, my goodness.

That is unbelievable. They don't like each other. They don't like

each other. . You are kidding me, really? This is the part that gets

me. This is the part that gets me here. I am in charge of the touch

green. Watch owe Del after he gets hit the first time. He will pause.

Right. It's amaze mewing us. It amused a lot of fans, OK. The NFL

were disapproving of it because they don't like to see this kind of

thing. From a players' point of view, from a team point of view, it

distracted both of them in this game, didn't it? Yeah. It threw the

flow off the game. It looked like he didn't have control of his team and

players the coach. It wasn't about the game. It was about these two

guys going at it. As controversial as what I'm about to say is, owe Del

had to do that. -- Odel. He had been hearing a lot of stuff, man. People

staking shots at him. People saying this and that. All kind of things at

him. Taking shots at him after the play. At some point you have to put

an end to it. You might not want to go that extreme he went. You will

have to put your foot down and be like - listen, I might be handsome,

but you are not going to keep taking these shots at me, man. He had to

express himself a little bit. How do they make sure it doesn't happen

this time? They cannot allow it to overshadow the actual game. The

Giants are in control of this offensively because Norman, who is

always on the offenses right side, he can now put Odel on the left

cider in the slot. They never have to see each other. ? It should be

interesting. Norman, Washington paid him that money, top rated

quarterback in the league. He is playing withle. You would just

take Odel out of the firing line? I would let him... Not out of the

game. Out of the firing line, not going man-to-man with Norman? I

would let them match up. If it gets out of control as a offencive

co-ordinator you can take that away and put him on oth other side. You

would expect the Giants to beat the Redkin skins. It will be tough iechl

I'm biased towards the Giants. He Giants are riding high. It might be

time to let one slip. Highs an lows of Week 2 in the NFL. Great things

here. -- and. Hurdling was the rage in Week 2. A big, big man. Look how

high he gets. Olympics, inspiring. Ebron did it. Big guys. They are

athletic. You don't want your quarterbacks taking hits like that.

Come on, man. You can't. You have to watch that. How can you come back in

the locker room having been run over by the quarterback. He needed to

keep his eye on the ball rather than the action. Fuller there. The luck

was with the Falcons here, James Hardy benefitting there. When it's

with you, it's with you. Look at this from Benjamin as well. It's

what he had does? The concentration. You know you love that team. Nothing

beats the Falcons JM. He wants to be playing. He wants to be in the team.

If you are going to celebrate, make sure you are warmed up. Trufant

looks like he has done something nasty to his hamstring or his knee.

I'm not sure what there is to say. Cam started the season looking as
