Wimbledon. Today we will see four players who have stood as

:00:47.:00:48.

champions, who have received the adulation of Centre Court crowd,

:00:49.:00:52.

four players who have lifted the trophy high, four players who have

:00:53.:00:57.

reached the top of their game, four players who have won a lot. D2 is

:00:58.:01:12.

the date of champions! -- Day to is the day of champions.

:01:13.:01:38.

some big names are coming out, the champions have already arrived.

:01:39.:01:50.

Rafael Nadal, French Open champion for the ninth time, he has twice

:01:51.:01:54.

been champion of Wimbledon, but this man has won it seven times, his 16th

:01:55.:02:01.

consecutive appearance at Wimbledon, his 59th straight grand slam event,

:02:02.:02:04.

what a record for Roger Federer. Edition and the one have a Watson,

:02:05.:02:08.

her fifth Wimbledon, she made the third round back in 2012 and she

:02:09.:02:13.

will be on Court three later on. One British number one, and there is

:02:14.:02:17.

another, Andy Murray, what a result yesterday, straight sets win, the

:02:18.:02:21.

only British man to win, for others went outside me that he looked very

:02:22.:02:25.

good. He will be back on court tomorrow playing browse roller. --

:02:26.:02:33.

Blaz Rola. The queues were full to capacity yesterday, no wonder, with

:02:34.:02:37.

who is playing today. This was the coverage to a opened the gates at

:02:38.:02:42.

10:30am today. Because there are stars around the ground they try to

:02:43.:02:46.

cram into every court. These are some of the stars we will be

:02:47.:02:54.

following today. In the absence of defending champion Marion Bartoli,

:02:55.:02:58.

it is last's run at Sabine Lisicki who opens proceedings on Centre

:02:59.:03:05.

Court. -- it is last year's runner-up who opens proceedings.

:03:06.:03:09.

Twice champion Rafael Nadal suffered a shock first-round defeat last year

:03:10.:03:11.

and the world and one will hope that history will not repeat itself

:03:12.:03:17.

today. -- the world one. Serena Williams will be on Centre Court

:03:18.:03:22.

later to begin her quest for an 18th grand slam title, the top seed and

:03:23.:03:25.

five-time champion faces a fellow American. Roger Federer has won

:03:26.:03:31.

seven titles and the All-England Club, the first step towards a

:03:32.:03:36.

record-breaking eight comes against Paolo Lorenzi on court in one. -- on

:03:37.:03:45.

Court One. Ten years since Maria Sharapova still won Wimbledon and

:03:46.:03:48.

she is still winning Grand Slams, the new French Open champion faces

:03:49.:03:51.

the British wild card Samantha Murray. And after illness and injury

:03:52.:03:58.

have a Watson looks back to her best. She reached the semifinals in

:03:59.:04:02.

Eastbourne last week and now the British number one has a good run at

:04:03.:04:08.

Wimbledon in her sights. So much to look forward to, play will begin on

:04:09.:04:14.

Day two and if you want to watch it live, this is the champion from

:04:15.:04:19.

2002, Lleyton Hewitt, always a threat on grass. He is on court at

:04:20.:04:23.

the moment, together with Stanislas Wawrinka. Leighton is on Court

:04:24.:04:28.

three, Stanislas Wawrinka is on court and ado. The players are not

:04:29.:04:34.

out there yet. -- Lleyton is on court number three, Stanislas

:04:35.:04:41.

Wawrinka is not on court yet. Using the red button you can watch

:04:42.:04:45.

coverage and interrupted now. There's a wonderful bears around the

:04:46.:04:48.

grounds. The first round matches continue. If people cannot get on a

:04:49.:04:56.

court a popular venue for a picnic is the Hill. You can watch the

:04:57.:05:05.

action on the big screen from there. Tim Henman is with me and we are

:05:06.:05:10.

joined, on this day of champions by the reigning ladies champion Marion

:05:11.:05:15.

Bartoli. Not on court today. Because you have now retired. What is it

:05:16.:05:22.

like to be back at Wimbledon? So many amazing memories from last year

:05:23.:05:25.

still in my mind. It is absolutely an honour. I am sure there was no

:05:26.:05:29.

way I could have handled the pressure on court. It is an absolute

:05:30.:05:34.

honour to have this badge. Now I have moved on to a new life doing

:05:35.:05:37.

different things but I am so happy to be back. I have been in tears on

:05:38.:05:43.

Centre Court many times but for different reasons! It is wonderful

:05:44.:05:48.

that you have come back. I know that you said you couldn't carry on in

:05:49.:05:51.

tennis because of your body and you had to retire but coming back

:05:52.:05:55.

there's such a magic about this tournament. It is, for every player

:05:56.:06:00.

it is their dream to win Wimbledon. To open proceedings on Centre

:06:01.:06:04.

Court. I think for me last year to see Sabine Lisicki, one of my best

:06:05.:06:08.

friends, during the match was hard to handle, and it is kind of my

:06:09.:06:12.

present that I've given her this year the opportunity to walk into

:06:13.:06:19.

Centre Court and open the procedure. I will welcome as well, just a

:06:20.:06:22.

different person. For every tennis player from every country, it is

:06:23.:06:26.

absolutely a pleasure to be just playing at Wimbledon. A dream coming

:06:27.:06:32.

true. To be a champion is amazing. This was the walking onto court last

:06:33.:06:35.

year, do you remember how nervous you were? Nervous but focused at the

:06:36.:06:41.

same time, I think it was good nerves. I knew what I had to do, and

:06:42.:06:46.

I was focused. I was extremely focused, I would say. I think I was

:06:47.:06:51.

much more nervous during my first final. Having played once already

:06:52.:06:56.

before helped me to deal with the pressure. She is such a big hitter,

:06:57.:07:02.

Sabine Lisicki. I had a bad record against her, I lost the last three

:07:03.:07:06.

matches we had played, when in the qualifying at Wimbledon. And angling

:07:07.:07:12.

Mauresmo was in your corner and is now with Mr Murray! She helped you a

:07:13.:07:21.

lot. She helped me to industry. From having played a grand slam final she

:07:22.:07:24.

gave me the right advice and helped me to channel the pressure. -- she

:07:25.:07:32.

helped me to learn this live. I'm going to cry already! LAUGHTER

:07:33.:07:38.

This is the dream come true. Do you remember much about it was a table?

:07:39.:07:42.

I remember it well, especially the last game when I had my dad and my

:07:43.:07:49.

friends, trying to get me across the line to finally win the title. I

:07:50.:07:53.

remember I wanted to hit that spot on the server and I did it, and I

:07:54.:07:57.

just fell on my knees, saying, oh, my God! I could not believe it. It

:07:58.:08:06.

took me a good month to realise that I really did win Wimbledon. Have you

:08:07.:08:13.

watched it back many times? Probably 364 times! One everyday! LAUGHTER

:08:14.:08:24.

Every time I need some support, with my new life designing shoes and

:08:25.:08:27.

doing different stuff, it's difficult as well. Every time I need

:08:28.:08:33.

a boost, I'd go on YouTube and I watch it. It goes pretty quickly! It

:08:34.:08:41.

brings back a huge smile on my face. Now I can go back to work! You've

:08:42.:08:46.

got the trophy and won a Grand Slam and more importantly you have become

:08:47.:08:50.

above the club sold forever you will be able to be due on the lawn as

:08:51.:08:55.

Wimbledon champion. Which is nice. We will be seeing your having lunch

:08:56.:09:05.

for many to come. I will tell my boyfriend. LAUGHTER

:09:06.:09:12.

. Changing the subject very quickly, Tim, what can we talk

:09:13.:09:20.

about? A day of champions on court. It certainly is. Roger Federer on

:09:21.:09:23.

Court One, Rafael Nadal on Centre Court. When you reflect on their

:09:24.:09:27.

performances last year it was a very different scenario for them so they

:09:28.:09:31.

will be very keen to get off to a good positive start. They are both

:09:32.:09:35.

in good form, Roger Federer women in Germany on grass, and a Rafael Nadal

:09:36.:09:41.

winning in Paris. -- Roger Federer winning in Germany. It will be

:09:42.:09:46.

interesting to see how they start their campaign. Rafael Nadal did not

:09:47.:09:51.

do at Wimbledon very well last year, he lost in the second round two

:09:52.:09:57.

years ago, and then he lost in the first round last. Russell has been

:09:58.:10:00.

talking to him as he tries to recapture past glories. COMMENTATOR:

:10:01.:10:20.

Nadal is on the ascendancy on this court. There's a new man in tennis!

:10:21.:10:26.

Rafael Nadal! Wimbledon is the second Grand Slam at which I had

:10:27.:10:31.

success in my career. I had been in five finals, winning two, it's

:10:32.:10:35.

great, it is a tournament I love so much, I am excited to be back and

:10:36.:10:40.

looking forward to playing. These great championships have produced

:10:41.:10:47.

huge, huge upsets. This is one of the biggest in history. I did not

:10:48.:10:54.

play tennis for seven months after I lost. My knee was not 100%. I think

:10:55.:10:59.

I did not prepare myself well for that. Opportunities are not forever

:11:00.:11:14.

and if you have some mistakes with your serve... COMMENTATOR:.

:11:15.:11:22.

Outstanding. Wimbledon history performance! From Steve Darcis.

:11:23.:11:33.

Nadal has lost in the first round of a major. The need is better in every

:11:34.:11:42.

practice. Much better. -- my knee is better. It is important for me that

:11:43.:11:47.

my knee is giving me the chance to practice more than I did in the last

:11:48.:11:50.

couple of years, I think I am practising well, after 2012, you

:11:51.:11:59.

imagine that you will probably not have the chance to be back at your

:12:00.:12:03.

best level, and finally I did. I came back, I played an amazing year

:12:04.:12:10.

last year, and busier, for the first six of the year, I'm playing very

:12:11.:12:21.

well again. I would best to have another second part of the season, a

:12:22.:12:27.

positive one. SUE BARKER: he is such a gracious champion. He has not done

:12:28.:12:32.

as well as he would have liked in the past two years. What part does

:12:33.:12:37.

confidence play? It plays a part, for me it is also physical with

:12:38.:12:40.

Rafael Nadal. We all knew about his knee. The grasscourt is a service

:12:41.:12:45.

when you have to bend low and you put more stress on to your lower

:12:46.:12:50.

back and your knees. I think it will probably go to two phases, the first

:12:51.:12:54.

is in practice, to test his body and see if he reacts well, and then to

:12:55.:12:58.

but everything to the side when you walk on court and stay positive.

:12:59.:13:02.

He's just won the French Open once more which is beyond amazing. To

:13:03.:13:06.

carry this confidence, in the week of practice, look at all the small

:13:07.:13:10.

details. If you look at this, a fabulous record, that he has at

:13:11.:13:16.

Wimbledon, only in the last two years, was it the injuries? Thinks

:13:17.:13:22.

the last. It surprised me. I felt that coming onto grass it would be a

:13:23.:13:27.

good surface because it was soft on his knees, but I think Marion is

:13:28.:13:32.

right, the ball sometimes does state much lower, there is more bending

:13:33.:13:38.

from the knees and the back, -- it does stay lower. It was so sad to

:13:39.:13:43.

the when he played against Steve Darcis and was struggling so much

:13:44.:13:45.

but it is the sign of a great champion, he was able to come back

:13:46.:13:51.

from that, the way that he has played in Paris, it's inevitable

:13:52.:13:54.

that he can say with confidence now. I think the first round is

:13:55.:14:00.

always tricky in any tournament. Given those circumstances from last

:14:01.:14:03.

year, he will be very keen to get a win and if his belt today, and build

:14:04.:14:08.

on that for the rest of the tournament. Will the weather be a

:14:09.:14:12.

factor? It is sunny. Last year it was cold and damp. If I could point

:14:13.:14:19.

something out, everyone on clay, when they drew no doubt they would

:14:20.:14:22.

want to book their flight tickets for the next day. On grass, they

:14:23.:14:29.

will think, if there is a high seed that I can take on, it might be him.

:14:30.:14:34.

Sometimes, from the opener, they play out of their minds because they

:14:35.:14:38.

know that in a way that he is beatable on that surface. I think

:14:39.:14:42.

that is something that he has two take into account as well, but

:14:43.:14:47.

playing in sunny conditions will help him. He is on Centre Court

:14:48.:14:51.

against Martin Klizan who has made the third round of two Grand Slams

:14:52.:14:56.

and is left-handed, always tough. Back to the weather, everyone sees

:14:57.:14:59.

that in the first few days the courts and a bit slippery, and that

:15:00.:15:06.

can make it tricky. With this really hot weather, that will help to dry

:15:07.:15:11.

them a bit. The courts are always hard. I think that will favour

:15:12.:15:14.

Rafael Nadal, that they dry out and the ball will bounce high which he

:15:15.:15:18.

likes, he can get underneath it for his forehand. He is always such a

:15:19.:15:25.

great champion, such a great person, so humble, he always treats every

:15:26.:15:29.

player with such respect. He will go out on the court today knowing that

:15:30.:15:33.

he's got to put in a good performance to make sure that there

:15:34.:15:36.

are no upsets in his part of the draw. Talking of upsets, it was not

:15:37.:15:42.

just him, Roger Federer lasted, he looked so comfortable on grass, and

:15:43.:15:48.

out he went. I was totally shocked. By that Wednesday, last year was

:15:49.:15:54.

historical in so many different ways, we won't see a like that for a

:15:55.:15:59.

long, long time. I think his opponent said before the match, I

:16:00.:16:03.

will just serve and volley and come to the net as much as possible just

:16:04.:16:08.

to not look ridiculous against Roger Federer. And he did not look

:16:09.:16:14.

ridiculous, he actually beat him. You can always have a bad day, and I

:16:15.:16:19.

think that Roger had a bad day, and his opponent had an amazing day and

:16:20.:16:23.

went very fast on grass. It is hard, you can be one break down and lose

:16:24.:16:28.

this that basically. It was a very special championship last year. It

:16:29.:16:33.

was an incredible result, his opponent was serving and volleying

:16:34.:16:37.

and we haven't seen that on grass from a few years. Cynthia! It was

:16:38.:16:42.

amazing how well he played, that today. -- seems you! And then he

:16:43.:16:50.

lost in straight sets to Philipp Kohlschreiber, trying to play the

:16:51.:16:56.

same style. It is hard to predict that type of result. It just goes to

:16:57.:17:00.

show, Rafael Nadal had an upset, Roger lost in the second round

:17:01.:17:05.

lasted, they will both be very, very motivated to mature that doesn't

:17:06.:17:09.

happen this year. It could be a beautiful semifinal. Noone we

:17:10.:17:16.

mustn't get ahead of ourselves. I had Murray winning it yesterday!

:17:17.:17:19.

Lorenzi has never beaten a top ten player so it is a tough draw for him

:17:20.:17:24.

to face the great federal. It is and he doesn't have much of a grasscourt

:17:25.:17:29.

pedigree. From Roger Federer's point of view he is so comfortable. On

:17:30.:17:34.

Court One of those top guys realise they will have to play a few matches

:17:35.:17:39.

on Court One. You absolutely want to play there when it is hot and sunny

:17:40.:17:42.

because you don't want to be there in the rain, you will have

:17:43.:17:45.

interruptions. That is the beauty of the Centre Court roof. If you are

:17:46.:17:50.

there you can guarantee you will finish match. I think Roger Federer

:17:51.:17:54.

will again be keen to put in a solid performance and get the job done.

:17:55.:18:00.

Incredible, this day of champions, if you look at the record, the

:18:01.:18:04.

number of Grand Slams that they both have one, and Rafael Nadal could

:18:05.:18:08.

possibly catch Roger Federer, we never thought that could happen.

:18:09.:18:13.

He's on 14. And you would not count him out of winning Wimbledon this

:18:14.:18:19.

year. Rafael Nadal could have a double digit number of French

:18:20.:18:22.

opens, I don't know if people realise that. Winning the same Grand

:18:23.:18:29.

Slam more than ten times! In Indian Wells, they played doubles involving

:18:30.:18:33.

Roger, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Just amazing to be

:18:34.:18:41.

part of this kind of era, where we can watch all of them competing

:18:42.:18:48.

against each other. And Andy Murray. It's a long way to go but he already

:18:49.:18:55.

has 12. Wonderful for these two, you cannot count Roger out but he hasn't

:18:56.:19:01.

had the best year. That's right. The problem is when you said above that

:19:02.:19:06.

high there's only one way to go. At the age of 33 -- when you set the

:19:07.:19:11.

bar that high. Perhaps he plays less consistently than in previous years

:19:12.:19:15.

but on this surface is still has a great chance. It is hard for him in

:19:16.:19:20.

Australia, Paris or New York because the other players move so well, they

:19:21.:19:24.

are so aggressive from the baseline, they can take the ball so early on,

:19:25.:19:29.

perfect hands but on grass is the most attacking of any player. He

:19:30.:19:34.

still serves so well and dictates with his forehand, and on the other

:19:35.:19:37.

side of the coin grass is the toughest surface to defend on, and

:19:38.:19:43.

Djokovic, L and Murray rely on the defensive skills. Roger does not. He

:19:44.:19:49.

knows that if he dies he has to rely on the next point. I still think

:19:50.:19:52.

he's got a good chance this fortnight. I need a one word

:19:53.:19:58.

answer. Yesterday John McEnroe said that Rafael Nadal was the best at

:19:59.:20:02.

playing the volley. Lindsay Davenport said what about Roger. Who

:20:03.:20:09.

do you say? Roger, but he's not in the top 100. It's amazing to me that

:20:10.:20:14.

I went down the top 100 and I did not find a genuinely good volleyer.

:20:15.:20:20.

15 years ago, you had Stefan Edberg, Pat Sampras, lots of

:20:21.:20:27.

different people. -- Pete Sampras. I think Rafael Nadal is better at the

:20:28.:20:34.

volley than Roger. Do you think Stefan Edberg will bring something

:20:35.:20:40.

to Roger's game? It is one to watch out for. Is a lovely match ups.

:20:41.:20:44.

Moving to the ladies championship, Serena Williams is the top seed but

:20:45.:20:48.

her build-up has not gone well, she went out in the second round at the

:20:49.:20:51.

French Open and at the weekend she was asked if she had got over that

:20:52.:20:56.

loss. Your defeat at the French Open, how long did it take you to

:20:57.:21:03.

get over that? Who says I am over it! LAUGHTER

:21:04.:21:14.

You are not over it, then? Yeah. I doubt it. Knowing no. -- knowingly,

:21:15.:21:19.

no. I just love Serena. She is so honest

:21:20.:21:29.

all the time. She's probably not over it. I saw her yesterday on the

:21:30.:21:34.

practice court. I think she cannot wait to win her first match here,

:21:35.:21:39.

just to get over it. I think she is playing this much over and over

:21:40.:21:43.

again in her head and this is why she is number one because she

:21:44.:21:47.

absolutely hates to lose. She can't wait to get on the court. She just

:21:48.:21:54.

wants to walk on and win. They say beware the wooded warrior and she

:21:55.:21:57.

was wounded in the French Open. Absolutely. This court is playing

:21:58.:22:02.

differently to the Centre Court. She was surprised by the way the ball

:22:03.:22:08.

was bouncing. It is more sandy so there is much more play and it is

:22:09.:22:11.

slower. That's totally caught her by surprise. She had a very tough day.

:22:12.:22:18.

And her opponent played amazingly. It has happened so many times

:22:19.:22:22.

against top players. And it has happened to her. If we look at her

:22:23.:22:27.

grand slam record, the same age as Roger Federer, but 17 grand slam

:22:28.:22:34.

titles behind the great Martina. I know that you would love to join

:22:35.:22:39.

Martina and Chris Evatt, Margaret Court way out in front because she

:22:40.:22:42.

won the Australian Open ceremony times, but Serena Williams is one of

:22:43.:22:49.

the greatest champions. One appreciated as well, on and off the

:22:50.:22:53.

court, people don't know her so much from the outside, I know her from

:22:54.:22:58.

the locker room, she is so funny. She has a very good sense of humour

:22:59.:23:01.

and she loves to make fun of herself. And they have such a close

:23:02.:23:06.

relationship, with Venus, and they share the same locker room. It is

:23:07.:23:10.

obvious to see how close they are and how much they help each other,

:23:11.:23:16.

in their daily routines. I often see Serena taking food from the

:23:17.:23:19.

restaurant and bringing it to Venus, this is how close they are. It shows

:23:20.:23:26.

you what amazing champions they are both. Venus has won five times the.

:23:27.:23:33.

We will never forget that. And she has had health issues set is great

:23:34.:23:37.

that she is here. Somebody not so close to Serena is Maria Sharapova.

:23:38.:23:47.

There is a rivalry there. If she can't take the farthest point in the

:23:48.:23:50.

locker room, that is where she will be. One locker will be for Serena,

:23:51.:23:56.

the furthest one away will the one where Maria is. It is a tough

:23:57.:23:59.

relationship. 2-mac but that is good. Need that. I love Serena, to

:24:00.:24:08.

be honest. They obviously have some different issues. I think for the

:24:09.:24:11.

crowded makes it more interesting, because on the court they are really

:24:12.:24:17.

there to beat each other! LAUGHTER Absolutely! Maria will be on Court

:24:18.:24:23.

One, which is a disappointment for Samantha Murray, her opponent today,

:24:24.:24:26.

I think she hoped she would be on Centre Court. We can hear from some

:24:27.:24:32.

married now. You've got the right surname for Wimbledon. But you've

:24:33.:24:36.

got a huge task ahead of you, Maria Sharapova, fresh from winning the

:24:37.:24:39.

French Open, how do you feel about everything that will happen in the

:24:40.:24:44.

next two hours? To start with and just really excited about playing

:24:45.:24:48.

somebody on her level, testing myself, seeing what I can do about

:24:49.:24:52.

-- against someone of that standard and to play on a show court is

:24:53.:24:57.

incredible. When you heard the draw, with their mixed emotions

:24:58.:25:00.

because they were easier matches but it is a big occasion. First I was

:25:01.:25:04.

shocked and then I thought it was a dream draw. You don't get the

:25:05.:25:10.

opportunity to play against someone like her. I am used to playing in

:25:11.:25:15.

Challenger Events and this big occasion, it's really exciting. Your

:25:16.:25:20.

physical preparation is done, mentally how do you cope with a day

:25:21.:25:25.

like today? Micah Richards helped me come he has been through these big

:25:26.:25:29.

matches before, he is experienced -- my coach has helped me. I am just

:25:30.:25:37.

looking forward to it now. Maria says she will try to find videos of

:25:38.:25:41.

the way you play, is that strange for you to hear? She will have a job

:25:42.:25:47.

to find them! It is nice to get that. I've been watching some videos

:25:48.:25:52.

of her and I know how she plays. I know what I will do when I play

:25:53.:25:57.

her. She's giving you respect, taking you seriously. What would be

:25:58.:26:02.

a good achievement for you today? I will go out there to try to win. I

:26:03.:26:06.

want to put my game on the court, do my best. I want to show what I can

:26:07.:26:13.

do. You came here last, is it still that same huge sense of occasion

:26:14.:26:18.

before you even play? I think everyone feels that, at Wimbledon,

:26:19.:26:34.

it is such a special event. I feel more relaxed and comfortable now. I

:26:35.:26:39.

did work here one year, after my first year at university I worked in

:26:40.:26:43.

accreditation so it's a bit of a change! A very big day today. Enjoy

:26:44.:26:48.

every second, and thank you for talking to us. SUE BARKER: She says

:26:49.:26:54.

she is feeling comfortable and relaxed, she may feel less relaxed

:26:55.:26:59.

as she walks on court. It's inevitable. Nervous energy is a good

:27:00.:27:02.

sign. It shows she cares about what she's doing. It is important. If she

:27:03.:27:07.

can go there and certainly when you play big matches for the first time

:27:08.:27:10.

it can go quickly so it is in port and that she takes her time, and in

:27:11.:27:15.

between points, has a plan, the way she wants to play, goes out there to

:27:16.:27:19.

really enjoy it. She's got a tough match but what a great opportunity

:27:20.:27:26.

she's got. Nothing to lose. A lot to gain. Irrespective of the result she

:27:27.:27:30.

can hopefully build on this the future. We've got to let you go

:27:31.:27:33.

because you've got a big date on Centre Court.

:27:34.:27:36.

future. We've got to let you go because you've got a big date on Not

:27:37.:27:38.

that sort of date. Another sort of date! With your lovely Wimbledon

:27:39.:27:45.

trophy! Will you walk out with that? My gosh, I'm so excited. I call it

:27:46.:27:52.

my sunshine. When I'm in my room and I wake up and I see the replica of

:27:53.:27:56.

the trophy, however dark it is outside that is my pure sunshine. I

:27:57.:28:01.

know that you will get a huge welcome. Sorry you are not there

:28:02.:28:05.

playing but great to have you back as the reigning champion. We'll see

:28:06.:28:08.

more view throughout the champion. Thank you, and Tim as well. A

:28:09.:28:13.

beautiful sunny day, very warm on the members lawn. Dealers suffer

:28:14.:28:19.

from hay fever? Ali I am fine. The pollen levels have been very high.

:28:20.:28:25.

What are they like, Carol? Very high. Look at that magnificent

:28:26.:28:29.

view. The picnics are out, there is a kaleidoscope of summer colours and

:28:30.:28:36.

a cacophony of noise. It is raised every few minutes is another point

:28:37.:28:40.

is scored on the outside courts with a ripple of applause. The sun is

:28:41.:28:44.

shining, a beautiful afternoon, as we go through the afternoon you will

:28:45.:28:48.

find that the cloud begins to build a little. Still some sunshine coming

:28:49.:28:52.

through it. As it gets thicker from 4pm onwards we are at risk of

:28:53.:28:57.

showers. It's a 40% risk of a shower, like yesterday, it will

:28:58.:29:01.

continue into the evening but diminish with time. We're looking at

:29:02.:29:06.

light winds, temperatures in the low 20s, so feeling nice. And if

:29:07.:29:10.

anything, as we head into tomorrow, the risk of showers and images even

:29:11.:29:18.

further. SUE BARKER: Great news, perfect weather for tennis. Rain

:29:19.:29:22.

disrupted play yesterday, one unfinished match on Court One, but

:29:23.:29:28.

this is Centre Court and Julia Glushko in her first Wimbledon faces

:29:29.:29:31.

Sabine Lisicki, who has the honour of opening up Centre Court in place

:29:32.:29:35.

of the defending champion. She was a finalist last year. Then the battle

:29:36.:29:39.

of the left-handers, Martin Klizan against Rafael Nadal. Rafael Nadal

:29:40.:29:45.

wants his 700th tour victory here today. And then the Serena Williams

:29:46.:29:50.

in her 56 Grand Slam appearance up against a fellow American. And the

:29:51.:29:55.

match to be finished, it was quite eventful, Juergen Meltzer, suffering

:29:56.:30:02.

stomach problems against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, it could be over quickly

:30:03.:30:06.

because Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming out to serve for the match. Roger

:30:07.:30:10.

Federer would be up against Paolo Lorenzi, and then Samantha Murray,

:30:11.:30:16.

her big day, against the champion from 2004, the French Open winner,

:30:17.:30:21.

Maria Sharapova, and then we look at the future because Eugenie Bouchard

:30:22.:30:25.

is tipped to be a feature wooden one, she was semifinalist at the

:30:26.:30:32.

French Open and at the US Open, and against the very experienced

:30:33.:30:35.

Hantuchova. That is what is happening on Court One. That starts

:30:36.:30:40.

at 1pm. At the moment, Lleyton Hewitt, the former champion, has

:30:41.:30:45.

made a great start. He is serving for a double break. That is on Court

:30:46.:30:49.

three. You can watch that on the red button.

:30:50.:31:10.

Nishikori, the highest ranked Japanese man ever, against De

:31:11.:31:18.

Schepper, also on the red button. The early stages of this match on

:31:19.:31:44.

Court number 18, you can follow that online. So much happening here at

:31:45.:31:51.

Wimbledon on day two of the Championships. We are heading over

:31:52.:31:54.

to watch Stanislas Wawrinka, the fifth seed here, up against Joao

:31:55.:32:09.

Sousa, and the commentators are John Lloyd and Andrew Cotter.

:32:10.:32:30.

ANDREW COTTER: He has dealt well with the pressure of these break

:32:31.:32:45.

points. John Lloyd: He was lucky to get away with them, a bit of a let

:32:46.:32:57.

off there. Huge forehands from Wawrinka in this game.

:32:58.:33:36.

There it is, a break for Wawrinka. It is just odd as well, given the

:33:37.:33:51.

previous service It is just odd as well, given the

:33:52.:33:57.

games by Joao Sousa, he really put himself in bother there. But

:33:58.:34:03.

Wawrinka has the break in this first set.

:34:04.:34:12.

That is a joy to watch, that backhand. A one-handed backhand from

:34:13.:34:24.

Wawrinka, for me the best in the world.

:34:25.:34:39.

First double fault of this match. He should get a prize for that, some

:34:40.:34:48.

compensation. There might be a few of those from

:34:49.:35:01.

Wawrinka as well, four aces so far. A good second serve that was, he

:35:02.:35:34.

belted that one. He is very confident on the second serve, he

:35:35.:35:41.

will go for seconds over 100 mph, he has no fear of it.

:35:42.:35:50.

So, a good hold to back up that break of serve, Wawrinka looking

:35:51.:36:02.

comfortable now. Magnus Norman in the bright orange T-shirt, his

:36:03.:36:06.

coach. All fairly happy, just that one game, that aberration from Sousa

:36:07.:36:14.

and Wawrinka took advantage. It is strange because he started

:36:15.:36:18.

confidently and played some very comfortable service games in the

:36:19.:36:22.

corners and then backing up in the next shot with some big ground

:36:23.:36:27.

strokes. He looked very comfortable, then suddenly he throws in an awful

:36:28.:36:34.

game and just handed the break to Wawrinka really. Wawrinka will

:36:35.:36:37.

certainly take those opportunities when they come his way, that was

:36:38.:36:43.

given to him really. I have to stressed that Sousa is a man who

:36:44.:36:47.

comes here with a bit of pedigree on grass. He got to the semifinals in

:36:48.:36:53.

the Netherlands, where he lost to Benjamin Becker, he did take one set

:36:54.:37:05.

off Roger Federer. He seems to be served and volleying more than he

:37:06.:37:14.

ever has done. He has put that into his repertoire, he certainly did it

:37:15.:37:19.

at Queen's and seems to be doing so today as well. Bright sunshine here

:37:20.:37:32.

on Court Two, and new balls for Sousa to stay in the set.

:37:33.:38:08.

At this level, they have such big first serves. He has had two big

:38:09.:38:20.

second serves, Wawrinka, and hasn't made a return on either of them.

:38:21.:38:22.

Just missed that one! What we have had from Sousa, three

:38:23.:38:52.

service holds to love, and one break. It takes just one game of

:38:53.:39:04.

falling off the pace, going to sleep a little bit, and the big players,

:39:05.:39:11.

and Wawrinka is certainly one of those, will pounce, serving for the

:39:12.:39:12.

set. Excellent combination there.

:39:13.:39:40.

Wawrinka, deep serve out wide, then gets round the next

:39:41.:39:41.

Wawrinka, deep serve out wide, then gets round the shot on the forehand

:39:42.:39:47.

and puts his opponent in an almost impossible position.

:39:48.:40:21.

That was a fairly ruthless combination.

:40:22.:40:40.

Wonderful return by Sousa. The pace of Wawrinka's serve was decent, but

:40:41.:40:58.

not the position. Straight into the hitting zone there. Sousa have no

:40:59.:41:00.

problem with that backhand. Ace number five brings up set point

:41:01.:41:13.

for the number five seed. That is the way to do it. Just over

:41:14.:41:32.

25 minutes' time. SUE BARKER: Stanislas Wawrinka makes

:41:33.:41:39.

a good start here at Wimbledon, we will be right back with them in a

:41:40.:41:43.

moment. Lleyton Hewitt is marching on, he has taken the first set

:41:44.:41:52.

against his Polish opponent, 6-2. That is on the red button if you

:41:53.:41:58.

want to watch that. Court 12 is also on the red button,

:41:59.:42:30.

semifinalist, Petkovic, totally in control of her match.

:42:31.:42:40.

COMMENTATOR: The first set comfortably goes the way of

:42:41.:42:51.

Wawrinka. He has a tattoo on his left arm, we got a little short of

:42:52.:42:57.

that tattoo. It fills up almost all of his forearm.

:42:58.:43:15.

Never tried, never failed... That is what he has filled his left arm

:43:16.:43:31.

with. Sousa serving at the start of this second set.

:43:32.:43:57.

He has got a weary air, Stanislas Wawrinka. He looks a beaten man, but

:43:58.:44:05.

far from that. Challenges are available here on

:44:06.:44:37.

Court Two. It was wide. It is not going to get the job

:44:38.:45:01.

done, that mid-court forehand. That is the pressure that, when you play

:45:02.:45:06.

against the top players, the length has to be a lot better than that.

:45:07.:45:08.

Otherwise that is going to happen. He has annoyed himself there because

:45:09.:45:24.

his movement was not good. He looked like he was waiting for the ball to

:45:25.:45:29.

come to him, instead of moving for the ball.

:45:30.:46:09.

Just toying with Sousa. That is the best point we have had so far.

:46:10.:46:22.

Nicely done from both players. That was an excellent volley from

:46:23.:46:27.

Wawrinka, not easy. He developed that one beautifully, nice and deep.

:46:28.:46:47.

He has got to be careful with his Portuguese chuntering because it is

:46:48.:46:59.

a Brazilian in the chair. Sousa speaks six languages so he can throw

:47:00.:47:04.

in another language if he is worried about getting caught saying

:47:05.:47:05.

something! So, Wawrinka at the start of this

:47:06.:47:44.

second set has the break. The boost for the number five seed.

:47:45.:47:59.

It is unfortunate for us that it is in Portuguese. I have got absolutely

:48:00.:48:08.

no idea what he is complaining about. You literally have no idea,

:48:09.:48:19.

John! Literally no idea! That is the best way to deal with it. A winning

:48:20.:48:32.

smile. It cannot be about the calls because there has been no

:48:33.:48:35.

controversy about that. Maybe he finally snapped about Portugal's

:48:36.:48:43.

form in the World Cup. I don't know what he is complaining about there.

:48:44.:48:52.

Wawrinka with the break. Portuguese viewers, e-mail in! I have no idea

:48:53.:48:55.

why he lost it there. He is unhappy with the sky. Wawrinka

:48:56.:49:27.

is playing very quickly between points, taking hold of them very

:49:28.:49:39.

fast. Sousa has lost his rhythm. Riding that wave of disgruntlement

:49:40.:49:44.

from his opponent. I'm still trying to work out what he

:49:45.:50:01.

might have been upset about. He didn't show any discontent during

:50:02.:50:06.

the point. Anyway, serving, break down.

:50:07.:50:32.

That will do nicely. He needs to get himself moving forward again.

:50:33.:51:09.

Another hold to love for Sousa. He is sort of making the cardinal sin

:51:10.:51:30.

of throwing these errors together in bunches. As you said, he has been

:51:31.:51:36.

holding his serve so easily at times and then the two games he lost, he

:51:37.:51:43.

played three almost in a row. Really Wawrinka has not had to do much to

:51:44.:51:48.

break. It's not like he played stunning shots. He has just played

:51:49.:51:56.

solid tennis and he is up one set and a break and he is coasting at

:51:57.:52:01.

the moment because his opponent keeps throwing in these awful

:52:02.:52:09.

service games. Three of the last four years he has gone out in the

:52:10.:52:15.

first round so maybe he was summoning the referee in Portuguese.

:52:16.:52:23.

Anyway, that continues but I think Joao Sousa is more or less happy.

:52:24.:52:31.

But yes, Wawrinka is a different player now, it seems, and I wonder

:52:32.:52:36.

how far he can go in this Grand Slam. It should be able to suit his

:52:37.:52:43.

game, he is serving very well indeed, as we saw at Queen's, and he

:52:44.:52:47.

is looking comfortable here. That last forehand from Wawrinka, it

:52:48.:54:30.

is just that flexibility in movement there. It was a decent forehand from

:54:31.:54:35.

Sousa that attacked him, he should have done better with that but often

:54:36.:54:40.

looks unbalanced on grass. He doesn't recover as well as the top

:54:41.:54:47.

four seeds, for example. That he does as well as anybody in the draw,

:54:48.:54:57.

the first serve. He can find corners all day long, 128 mph too, that is a

:54:58.:55:04.

big serve. The quickest of the match.

:55:05.:55:25.

Serving exhibition towards the end that game. And Sousa is not in happy

:55:26.:55:39.

place. Wawrinka have plenty of time in that

:55:40.:56:04.

want to line up the approach shot on his favourite side, and he didn't do

:56:05.:56:06.

enough with it. Nicely done there from Wawrinka.

:56:07.:57:06.

That sliced backhand from a defensive position, managed to

:57:07.:57:12.

really hit plenty of pace with it and put his opponent back in an

:57:13.:57:14.

awkward place. This was a tough volley, very low.

:57:15.:57:35.

He did well, punched that one away. Good technique.

:57:36.:58:05.

Wawrinka is not at his very best yet, doing just enough.

:58:06.:58:20.

The hold for Sousa, Wawrinka with the advantage in the second set. SUE

:58:21.:58:37.

BARKER:, Let's show you what is happening on Court number three,

:58:38.:58:46.

Lleyton Hewitt breezed through the first set but he is one break of

:58:47.:58:50.

serve down in the second set. If you want to watch it, that is on the red

:58:51.:58:58.

button. Over on Court 17, a bit of an upset here. Jerzy Janowicz has

:58:59.:59:02.

dropped the opening set to Somdev Devvarman of India. You can watch

:59:03.:59:12.

that one online if you want to. Here is Maria Sharapova going through her

:59:13.:59:20.

warm up routine. The French Open champion, and for many people

:59:21.:59:25.

favourite to win another title here. She will be on Court Number One here

:59:26.:59:42.

today up against some -- Sam Murray, a wildcard from Great

:59:43.:59:44.

Britain. Back we go now to court to. Murray, a wildcard from Great

:59:45.:59:47.

Britain. Back we go now to court You need danger pay for that! What a

:59:48.:00:50.

great second serve that was. 74 mph, but the kick on that, the angle!

:00:51.:01:47.

Sousa not getting close to his opponent's service. Three Stanislas

:01:48.:01:58.

Wawrinka service games at the moment, not threatening. There are

:01:59.:02:09.

times when the ball is on his racket, Sousa, and as I say, the top

:02:10.:02:13.

players, they can find a way to get the ball back low, especially with

:02:14.:02:18.

crisp volley in bad at the moment he's just not doing enough with the

:02:19.:02:24.

return. When he does get it back, puts it high.

:02:25.:03:11.

Well done, there. He spotted Stanislas Wawrinka charging and

:03:12.:03:20.

tried to sneak in, Wawrinka, the ball was going very low, and Sousa

:03:21.:03:29.

just spotted that one. Nice angle. Another hold to love from Sousa.

:03:30.:03:42.

Wawrinka Intel to control. Sousa has been broken twice, but every other

:03:43.:03:47.

service game he has had comic he has held to love. It's rather strange.

:03:48.:03:52.

You can see by Wawrinka Bos reaction a few times in the match, he is

:03:53.:03:57.

leading by a set and a break but his opponent has been getting on his

:03:58.:04:02.

case a bit, even though he has been winning comfortably, he's still not

:04:03.:04:06.

feeling the ball right. He's making a field board mistakes which he

:04:07.:04:10.

wouldn't normally do, and he's not totally happy. He is at a set and a

:04:11.:04:15.

break, it is not like he's doing badly, but a player knows when he's

:04:16.:04:19.

feeling the ball well, when he's coming off the strings -- when it is

:04:20.:04:24.

coming off the strings in the right place, when he's moving well. I

:04:25.:04:28.

don't think that he feels at the moment that it is quite fair. He

:04:29.:04:37.

started working with Magnus Norman couple of years ago now. He took

:04:38.:04:44.

something on his forehand, and just played little things and that has

:04:45.:04:48.

made a big difference. There he is come here is a fine coach. He

:04:49.:04:53.

tweaked a few things, as you said, but the main thing was the mental

:04:54.:04:59.

side, I think. He got Wawrinka believing that he could win a Grand

:05:00.:05:03.

Slam. I don't think Wawrinka really believed it himself. You might have

:05:04.:05:07.

said things but deep down he didn't really believe it until Magnus

:05:08.:05:09.

Norman came into his life as his coach. New balls. Wawrinka serving.

:05:10.:05:25.

One break-up in the second set. -- one break up. A second serve ace.

:05:26.:05:58.

Absolutely right to get annoyed at himself. When you get a second serve

:05:59.:06:05.

against Wawrinka you'll have to do something because the first serves,

:06:06.:06:14.

he is getting no joy of those. -- of those. Only two double faults in

:06:15.:06:30.

this match, and both of them from Wawrinka. He has no fear on that

:06:31.:06:53.

third of! 100 and I'm miles an hour, you just served a double fault on

:06:54.:06:57.

the previous point, he gets a second serve and belts it down the middle

:06:58.:07:00.

at 109 miles an hour, you just served a double fault on the

:07:01.:07:03.

previous point, he gets a second serve and belts it down the middle

:07:04.:07:06.

at 109 mph! Lets see if he does the same thing on this one! Just working

:07:07.:07:44.

with the backhand for a shot or two. It's wonderful to watch, that free

:07:45.:07:50.

backhand. Suddenly Sousa is serving to stay in the second set.

:07:51.:09:10.

We have not seen too many of them in this much but that was a beauty! He

:09:11.:09:17.

has not needed to hit too many come he's been so comfortable. This one,

:09:18.:09:21.

unbelievable. The best one-handed backhand in the world. That is an

:09:22.:09:24.

absolute bullet. He's OK. The first slip of the day.

:09:25.:10:03.

It's that sort of area, three or four feet towards the back of the

:10:04.:10:07.

court, which tends to be a bit more slippery. Tomas Berdych underscored

:10:08.:10:12.

yesterday went over three or four times, but that is the first slip of

:10:13.:10:43.

the day. Sousa hanging on, just come in the second set. -- hanging on,

:10:44.:10:53.

just, in the second set. Just mention of Magnus Norman, we saw him

:10:54.:10:57.

in the coaches stand and talked about him being a very good player

:10:58.:11:01.

and is off, a former world and the two and he almost won a Grand Slam

:11:02.:11:05.

in the French Open, and then he made his name as a coach with the Swedish

:11:06.:11:10.

players, Robin so doing, I always like to mention him because he is a

:11:11.:11:13.

like to mention him because he is forgotten figure, it has now been

:11:14.:11:17.

three years since he last played, but he still harbours ambitions of

:11:18.:11:21.

coming back. He's 29, he had glandular fever and it was a vicious

:11:22.:11:31.

bout. He was right up there, challenging the biggest names,

:11:32.:11:35.

Rafael Nadal, federal Mac, and Djokovic, and now he is a forgotten

:11:36.:11:43.

figure in the game. -- Federer. Amazing how that happens, you would

:11:44.:11:46.

expect him to come back from glandular fever but he hasn't been

:11:47.:11:50.

able to. You keep hearing occasional things in the press that he is going

:11:51.:11:55.

to come back at some stage but it's an awful long time to be at, at his

:11:56.:12:01.

age, but Magnus Norman did a very good job with him. And he's invented

:12:02.:12:06.

a new type of tennis ball, new cover for the tennis ball so we will see

:12:07.:12:11.

if anything comes of that. He's branching out. It would be great to

:12:12.:12:17.

see Robin back playing. That one is definitely worth a challenge.

:12:18.:12:29.

UMPIRE: The call is being challenged. It was called in. That

:12:30.:12:43.

certainly was a challenge! Cruel! Mr Sousa has two challenges remaining.

:12:44.:12:54.

Unbelievable! So close to the lines on these second service. He is just

:12:55.:13:13.

fearless. Three second serve aces so far from Wawrinka. That is the sort

:13:14.:13:29.

of area he has thrown in today, he hasn't been pushed enough for it to

:13:30.:13:34.

worry him but he was off balance on that backhand. It was a very

:13:35.:13:38.

comfortable shot, and he shouldn't be making those sort of mistakes.

:13:39.:13:49.

Just shy of one hour on court, and a couple of set points for a two -

:13:50.:13:56.

zero lead for Stanislas Wawrinka. It is good from Sousa. When more set

:13:57.:14:40.

point for the Swiss player. -- one more set point.

:14:41.:14:58.

it was going wide, it would have been a double fault. Just a sloppy

:14:59.:15:09.

shot. That is two, in this game. It looked like he wasn't sat on the

:15:10.:15:13.

ball on his backhand side, off-balance. -- he was not set on

:15:14.:15:20.

the ball. He's put himself in a bit of trouble in this game, and he

:15:21.:15:22.

certainly hasn't needed to. Sousa looking for the confirmation,

:15:23.:15:50.

which came. Set point once again. There it is now. Wawrinka in

:15:51.:16:03.

control, in this first-round match. Again, without being entirely

:16:04.:16:07.

convincing. No, I think he has served very well, I think he is

:16:08.:16:15.

playing OK, Wawrinka, but he doesn't have to play any better than this.

:16:16.:16:20.

His first serve percentage dropped dramatically in that set, from 70%.

:16:21.:16:25.

But he is winning every point when he gets it in. I feel more winners,

:16:26.:16:34.

only four unforced errors, that seems surprising that, I thought it

:16:35.:16:37.

was much more than that but he did what he had to do, played OK, served

:16:38.:16:43.

well, held serve and then was given a break from Sousa and just held on.

:16:44.:16:50.

That is all he's had to do. A long and lively chat going on between

:16:51.:16:55.

Sousa and the umpire. About what, we can only speculate! He's not

:16:56.:17:03.

complaining about the calls because he would have challenged with

:17:04.:17:07.

Hawk-Eye, he would have done that once or maybe twice but he's been

:17:08.:17:11.

going on and on for the last five or six games and I've got no idea that

:17:12.:17:15.

there is any dispute going on. I've got no idea what it's about.

:17:16.:17:40.

Sousa playing in the main draw of Wimbledon for the first time, up

:17:41.:17:49.

against the number five seed, he hasn't really threatened him, he is

:17:50.:17:56.

trailing by two sets and he was -- he will serve to start this third

:17:57.:17:58.

set. If he keeps the belief, Sousa, she

:17:59.:19:41.

could come back a little in this match because Wawrinka isn't playing

:19:42.:19:46.

particularly well. If Sousa elevates his game a little, here. -- he could

:19:47.:19:59.

come back a little, in this match. Sousa holds, he is two sets down but

:20:00.:20:03.

he has taken the first game in this third set.

:20:04.:20:10.

SUE BARKER: stand very much in control. To continue watching that

:20:11.:20:18.

much, it is life on the red button -- Stanislas Wawrinka still very

:20:19.:20:22.

much in control. We are moving away in a moment. That matches online,

:20:23.:20:26.

you can follow and online, not on the red button. Go to the website.

:20:27.:20:30.

We are leaving court to and we are going to Centre Court. An Day two it

:20:31.:20:38.

is a tradition that the defending champion would begin play but Marion

:20:39.:20:41.

Bartoli, as we heard earlier, has retired from the game, yet she will

:20:42.:20:45.

be here, she will walk onto Centre Court once again to celebrate her

:20:46.:20:49.

victory but we are also jettisoned about the life of Elena Baltacha.

:20:50.:20:54.

Marilyn will be joined on court by a nine-year-old who is a pupil at the

:20:55.:21:00.

Elena Baltacha Academy. They will walk on court together soon. I'm

:21:01.:21:05.

joined by Martina Navratilova, nine times champion, a special day for

:21:06.:21:11.

her, and also for Judy Murray, congratulations on Andy's will

:21:12.:21:15.

yesterday, Federation Cup captain and you knew Elena very well. Very

:21:16.:21:20.

well. I watched play her first tournament 20 was mine, I knew her

:21:21.:21:24.

through all her career and for the last two and a half years Tuesday

:21:25.:21:28.

big part of the British Federation Cup team, and for the last two years

:21:29.:21:38.

I have a pattern of her tennis academy. Martina, it is a special

:21:39.:21:40.

day, you've been very much involved in the charity matches for Elena,

:21:41.:21:44.

and you are wearing your wristband. You've beaten me there, you've got

:21:45.:21:48.

to! We are raising money for the Academy. What Elena did, she started

:21:49.:21:53.

the Academy while she was still playing on tour, it's amazing

:21:54.:21:56.

because when we got home we want to rest. Elena put that passion into

:21:57.:22:01.

tennis, the passion she had for tennis, and enabled children from

:22:02.:22:05.

underprivileged backgrounds to play tennis. If we can keep that going

:22:06.:22:09.

and raise money for the Academy, even though Elena is unfortunately

:22:10.:22:13.

not here, her dream lives on. Absolutely. Such an awful time. It

:22:14.:22:18.

is likely that the world of tennis has rallied. They really have. Not

:22:19.:22:24.

just in this country. All around the circuit, the women's circuit, and

:22:25.:22:28.

the men's circuit, everyone has got behind it, it's about raising enough

:22:29.:22:57.

money to keep the Academy going for years to come and making sure that

:22:58.:23:00.

what Elena set out to achieve continues and that we remember her

:23:01.:23:02.

that way. Incredible to think that one year ago she was at Wimbledon

:23:03.:23:05.

and planning her wedding but her body was letting her down, she

:23:06.:23:07.

retired from tennis in November, one month later she married her

:23:08.:23:09.

long-time coach and just one month after that she was diagnosed with

:23:10.:23:12.

liver cancer and sadly lost her fight with the disease on May four.

:23:13.:23:14.

Many charity matches were held around the country including one at

:23:15.:23:17.

Queen's Club. We are here today to celebrate her life. She was a dream

:23:18.:23:19.

to work with. The best athlete I have ever worked with because she

:23:20.:23:23.

was the ultimate professional. She was one of my favourite people in

:23:24.:23:27.

the world. On court she was a really fierce competitor, the heart of a

:23:28.:23:31.

lion, and as a person, kind, funny, selfless, humble, appreciative, she

:23:32.:23:40.

was an absolute gem. She was also quite long time. She was 30 years

:23:41.:23:50.

old, she had just retired and she had so many amazing things that are

:23:51.:23:54.

feet and then we were up against this fight. We lost her one month

:23:55.:24:01.

ago to liver cancer. We've got three Mixed Doubles matches going on at

:24:02.:24:04.

each of the Venice of the three major tournaments. We've got a host

:24:05.:24:10.

of the best British players and the best international players.

:24:11.:24:12.

Everybody has turned out to support this. The Wimbledon champion, Andy

:24:13.:24:19.

Murray! You could see how proud she was,

:24:20.:24:31.

representing her country, how much joy she had on court, she is truly

:24:32.:24:35.

missed. Life goes on, we want to have fun and have a great day for

:24:36.:24:37.

her today. Shameful, get off the court! Who is

:24:38.:24:49.

this joker? Not everyone can do it! Just a gust

:24:50.:25:31.

of wind took it away. I have noticed that you are not grunting today,

:25:32.:25:34.

what is up? We all know that you do it. I've heard some imitations

:25:35.:26:00.

already. Talk to us! SHRIEKING NOISES. Drop it a couple of octaves

:26:01.:26:06.

and lifted up! This is what all tennis players secretly want to do

:26:07.:26:12.

and believe they can do. I have been looking at you and you have such an

:26:13.:26:15.

amazing hat. Can I have one? Game, set and match, Team Ross!

:26:16.:26:39.

Bally was obviously a great person. You can see by the turnout, a lot of

:26:40.:26:43.

the players have managed to make it, and it just shows how well respected

:26:44.:26:45.

she was. and it just shows how well respected

:26:46.:26:49.

she One of the biggest things was a character, her personality, and that

:26:50.:26:53.

is why so many people left. The reaction shows what an unbelievable

:26:54.:26:54.

wife I had, one in a trillion. SUE BARKER: such a fun day, Elena

:26:55.:27:06.

would have loved it and would have been proud of the way everyone

:27:07.:27:10.

turned up. She was such a battle on court. In every part of her life

:27:11.:27:14.

because she had terrible health issues from the age of 19. She had a

:27:15.:27:20.

liver condition from the age of 19, back surgery, foot surgery, some in

:27:21.:27:25.

a different issues to deal with but she kept fighting, trying to get

:27:26.:27:27.

better and putting herself through it, the fact that she made top 52

:27:28.:27:31.

years in a row with all of this going on, it's amazing when you know

:27:32.:27:36.

about it how she got out of bed in the morning, incredible heart, just

:27:37.:27:40.

a huge, huge fight. Prediction about one and she went a little titles, so

much to be proud of. -- the British and one. Marion Bartoli will be on

:27:51.:27:55.

a special day, a nice tradition. Know whether tournament makes you

:27:56.:27:58.

feel more like the defending champion than Wimbledon. That is

:27:59.:28:01.

what makes it so special. When you win the title, make sure that you

to salute the defending champion. The Mac it is wonderful that Marion

:29:03.:29:05.

because the nerves got to her, clearly, and no she gets to be the

:29:06.:29:10.

defending champion. A good opportunity for her, and hopefully

:29:11.:29:14.

we will see a great match. We're just going to pause for the

:29:15.:29:19.

announcement of Marilyn, and the young girl from the Academy, on the

:29:20.:29:25.

court. -- Marion. It is traditional for the reigning champion to open

:29:26.:29:29.

the play this afternoon on Centre Court. As you may know, last's

:29:30.:29:34.

champion, Marion Bartoli, has since retired from competitive tennis.

:29:35.:29:39.

Although she is not defending her title, we are delighted to tell you

:29:40.:29:41.

that she title, we are delighted to tell you

:29:42.:29:43.

that will be joining as on Centre Court in a few moments time.

:29:44.:29:51.

APPLAUSE -- that she will be joining us. In

:29:52.:29:57.

May this year, tennis and Wimbledon last one of its most popular

:29:58.:30:01.

characters when the former British and one, Elena Baltacha, passed away

:30:02.:30:04.

from liver cancer. She was just 30 years old.

:30:05.:30:21.

children from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn to play tennis.

:30:22.:30:25.

As a special tribute to Elena, we have invited a young player from her

:30:26.:30:30.

academy, to perform the coin toss before today's opening match. She

:30:31.:30:35.

will be joined in this by our lady's singles champion. Ladies and

:30:36.:30:39.

gentlemen, in celebration of the life of Elena Baltacha, police

:30:40.:30:50.

welcome on court Ellie Miller and ballot Marion Bartoli.

:30:51.:30:55.

APPLAUSE for Marion and Ellie. Here come the

:30:56.:31:54.

players. Sabine Lisicki and the Israeli player stepping on to Centre

:31:55.:31:59.

Court. We are going to stay here for a few minutes longer. We will return

:32:00.:32:04.

to Court One and head off to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Jurgen

:32:05.:32:09.

Melzer in a moment, but just a reaction, a wonderful ovation for

:32:10.:32:16.

mar grand and Ellie. As far as Elena's academy, the reaction, her

:32:17.:32:22.

legacy will live on. It will. The response has been incredible. Not

:32:23.:32:24.

just from Britain and round the world. I am sure all the funds,

:32:25.:32:31.

there is a trustee board, set up to make sure that her philosophy of

:32:32.:32:37.

delivering tennis into areas where maybe it didn't exist and giving

:32:38.:32:40.

children a chance to play will be at the core of it. Hopefully we will

:32:41.:32:45.

make it work for a long time. An academy like that to help kids that

:32:46.:32:48.

don't have a chance is close to your heart. The opportunity for children

:32:49.:32:52.

to be able to play tennis. It is an expensive sport, especially if you

:32:53.:32:57.

are starting up. A safe, healthy environment. I want to make sure

:32:58.:33:02.

there is not a one year deal. I will nudge the tennis committee to pay

:33:03.:33:05.

attention and raise money for it. Good. It is lovely. One of the

:33:06.:33:10.

coaches for the academy is here, Nino her husband is here and

:33:11.:33:14.

everyone needs to rally round him, because he suffered so badly. It is

:33:15.:33:18.

a tough time for him, they were together about eight years, but they

:33:19.:33:25.

were day in, day out, they were so intwined in each other's lives. And

:33:26.:33:28.

planning the next part of it. That is the sad thing about it. They just

:33:29.:33:34.

literally got married when she was diagnosed with cancer, so very tough

:33:35.:33:38.

time for him. I I know he has been buoyed by the incredible support

:33:39.:33:42.

that he has had from everybody and the way everybody has shown their

:33:43.:33:47.

love and respect for her. Marian, in tears there, making the decision to

:33:48.:33:50.

retire is difficult but when you come back you think,

:33:51.:33:51.

retire is difficult but when you come back you I could have been

:33:52.:33:56.

playing out here. I think her body was beat up last year, she is living

:33:57.:34:00.

it up, was beat up last year, she is living

:34:01.:34:02.

it being champion and this is her moment in the sun, even if she is

:34:03.:34:06.

not. Why you -- while you are here, as far as the Championship is

:34:07.:34:10.

concerned the lady, how excited are you that so many new names are

:34:11.:34:15.

emerging but the old guard is there. The new generation is knocking on

:34:16.:34:21.

door, so it is nice to see the new players coming through. The

:34:22.:34:26.

Americans, Townsend and Madison Keys playing great tennis. The new

:34:27.:34:30.

generations are coming and they are here to stay. I am sure Ellie, as

:34:31.:34:35.

they Leigh the court, Marian will be heading up to the Royal Box. Ellie's

:34:36.:34:40.

dad Kevin is in the Royal Box. I am sure she will be inspired by what

:34:41.:34:46.

she will see and will think I want this. If it doesn't inspire her, she

:34:47.:34:52.

needs to get another job. This will do it. That is Marion Bartoli

:34:53.:34:57.

leaving Centre Court. We wish them well. Thank you for your company.

:34:58.:35:02.

Good luck to Andy. And Jamie. Of course. Absolutely.

:35:03.:35:07.

Well we are heading off to Court Number One in a moment, but the

:35:08.:35:11.

practice court, they have been busy and there is Roger Federer, he will

:35:12.:35:16.

be on court later on, on Court Number One.

:35:17.:35:20.

And that is after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga completes his match against Jurgen

:35:21.:35:23.

Melzer. This is what happened last night,

:35:24.:35:27.

when the rain came down, and well, Jurgen Melzer was not a happy man

:35:28.:35:32.

out on Court One. He had a stomach upset. He left the court a number of

:35:33.:35:36.

times. He had led by two sets to one. He wanted the match stopped

:35:37.:35:41.

because of bad light but it was eventually stopped because of the

:35:42.:35:44.

rain. It may only have a few points to go. As they walk on to court now

:35:45.:35:49.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be serving for the match, at 5-4, so let us

:35:50.:35:56.

join our commentators on Court One, it is Tim Henman and Matt Chiltern.

:35:57.:36:03.

UMPIRE: Two minutes gentlemen. So the conclusion of this first

:36:04.:36:15.

round match between Jurgen Melzer, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, about to get

:36:16.:36:23.

under way. Final set, 5-4. Tsonga to serve. It could be just a single

:36:24.:36:27.

game. Under three hours. Not a long match, for a five setter.

:36:28.:36:34.

Of course Jurgen Melzer will hope it lasts a bit longer. Certainly not a

:36:35.:36:38.

long match to this point, but certainly a strange match. It was

:36:39.:36:41.

very very difficult to predict what was going to happen in the first

:36:42.:36:47.

set. It was Melzer that had the chance, didn't take the chances,

:36:48.:36:51.

Tsonga took a break point opportunity and ran away with it, to

:36:52.:36:56.

win it 6-1 and it was a role reversal in sets two and three.

:36:57.:37:00.

Melzer took the chances. And went up two sets to one. Then we had

:37:01.:37:04.

temperature weird situation with Melzer with the stomach upset,

:37:05.:37:07.

having to leave the court. And kind of doing deals with the umpire.

:37:08.:37:11.

Working out how he was going to get to the loo. Do what he needed to do,

:37:12.:37:15.

get back and continue playing. That is right. He had had his toilet

:37:16.:37:21.

break and when he down 5-2, two break, he pretty much had written

:37:22.:37:24.

off that set. He said I have to go and the umpire said I will have to

:37:25.:37:28.

give you a time violation if you are not back in time. He wasn't.

:37:29.:37:31.

Hopefully he is feeling better today.

:37:32.:37:41.

The umpire there, from San Marino. UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen this is

:37:42.:37:45.

the resumption of a rain delayed match. Mr Tsonga to the right of the

:37:46.:37:54.

chair, leads 5-4, final set. That explains it.

:37:55.:37:57.

Courtesy of the umpire. Tsonga just needs one game to progress to the

:37:58.:38:04.

second round. He will be serving with a break, at 5-4 in the final

:38:05.:38:10.

set. We said, I am sure he has played

:38:11.:38:15.

this game through, in his mind, many times last night and this morning.

:38:16.:38:18.

It will be interesting to see where he goes, with his first serve.

:38:19.:38:23.

If he goes for the big one up the middle. That is the aggressive

:38:24.:38:27.

option, if we goes out wide that is the more conservative option,

:38:28.:38:30.

looking to make the first serve in the court.

:38:31.:38:34.

-- if he goes out wide. It's the fifth meeting between these two men.

:38:35.:38:42.

Melzer has never beaten Tsonga. They played at Roland Garros this year.

:38:43.:38:46.

Second round Tsonga beat Melzer on that occasion, in straight sets. So

:38:47.:38:51.

a more competitive contest here on the grass.

:38:52.:39:02.

So they are going back to the match balls that were in play last night.

:39:03.:39:11.

The ballboys putting away the warm up balls.

:39:12.:39:18.

Court Number One not quite full, but it will be. Every day a sell-out.

:39:19.:39:27.

May have Roger Federer on court number one next. Might be within the

:39:28.:39:30.

next 15, 20 minutes. This was the story last night. 90%

:39:31.:39:51.

of the crowd very much behind the flamboyant Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried

:39:52.:39:59.

Tsonga. So what you say, big up the middle

:40:00.:40:04.

or slow out wide? Big one up the middle.

:40:05.:40:07.

It is what Tsonga is about, isn't it.

:40:08.:40:11.

Going for his shots. Serving for the match. 5-4.

:40:12.:41:03.

The umpire checking that Tsonga did want to challenge. He did question

:41:04.:41:39.

the call. UMPIRE: Mr Tsonga challenged the

:41:40.:41:44.

call. On the left service line. He has decided to challenge, a change

:41:45.:41:47.

of mind. He was given another challenge there by the umpire which

:41:48.:41:53.

almost unencouraged him to think it might have been in, but it was a

:41:54.:41:55.

long way out. Longest rally of the match. Brings

:41:56.:42:37.

up three match points for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

:42:38.:42:50.

UMPIRE: Mr Tsonga has one challenge remaining.

:42:51.:42:59.

Three hours exactly since this match began yesterday.

:43:00.:43:06.

And Tsonga finishes ittoffs with his 20th ace.

:43:07.:43:15.

-- finishes it off. So a brief encounter on Court Number One. Ends

:43:16.:43:23.

in a flash. With Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrating his first round win over

:43:24.:43:28.

Jurgen Melzer five sets, two days, and in the end three minutes this

:43:29.:43:46.

afternoon. A south-west exit for Melzer today

:43:47.:43:50.

but he put up a fight. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be dedelighted --

:43:51.:43:55.

delighted to finish that off and get to the second round. In the whole

:43:56.:43:59.

match he was pretty ordinary. Very up and down with his performance,

:44:00.:44:05.

didn't look like he was timing the ball particular lrly well, quite a

:44:06.:44:10.

few mishits, but through to round number two. And warmly applauded,

:44:11.:44:15.

off Court Number One, stopping to sign a few tennis balls on his way.

:44:16.:44:24.

So a brief glimpse of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out on Court One. They would

:44:25.:44:28.

have wanted to see a little more, but the pay off is that Roger

:44:29.:44:33.

Federer will be coming on to court shortly to play Paolo Lorenzi of

:44:34.:44:42.

Italy. We didn't get the big Tsonga

:44:43.:44:46.

celebration, I guess when you have hit four points it doesn't merit the

:44:47.:44:50.

dance across the grass For the big dance it needs a build up in

:44:51.:44:55.

adrenaline and after three more minutes on the court he probably

:44:56.:45:00.

felt just happy to be through to the next round, where he will look to

:45:01.:45:05.

play a lot better. Now all the kids are coming down and

:45:06.:45:11.

jostling for position. Trying to get a squiggle from the Frenchman on a

:45:12.:45:16.

piece of paper or a ticket on one of these giant tennis balls.

:45:17.:45:25.

So s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has come through, a five setter, over Jurgen

:45:26.:45:37.

Melzer, 6 1, 3 6, 3-6. It was a bizarre encounter with Melzer's

:45:38.:45:41.

illness yesterday and the ebb and flow of the match was extraordinary,

:45:42.:45:45.

with Tsonga coming and going in terms of his form and accuracy round

:45:46.:45:52.

the court and Melzer's problems. Very odd, but in the end they got it

:45:53.:45:57.

done and the line judges are troubling off as well, so their work

:45:58.:46:02.

was short and sweet out here on Court Number One as well.

:46:03.:46:09.

So Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has beaten Jurgen Melzer by three sets to two.

:46:10.:46:17.

In the first round. He has got the rest of the day off, maybe called

:46:18.:46:21.

back into aion tomorrow, under three hours in the end. Four point, nefrz

:46:22.:46:26.

even got going. Didn't score a point.

:46:27.:46:31.

-- Melzer never. Number 14 seed through to round two.

:46:32.:46:39.

And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is now talking to Leigh. A huge battle,

:46:40.:46:42.

quick work today but you must be relieved to get that oh and done

:46:43.:46:48.

with? I am happy, it was not an easy match, it was tough yesterday, today

:46:49.:46:51.

I just came for one game, but I did it well, so I am happy to go through

:46:52.:47:00.

this one, and now I will have a, and I will continue. The way you won the

:47:01.:47:05.

first set, how surprised were you that Melzer came back in that style?

:47:06.:47:11.

Sorry How surprised were you that Melzer came back? Yesterday, I

:47:12.:47:15.

played a good first set, then I had many break points in the first game,

:47:16.:47:21.

and finally, I lost it, and and then, then he played a lot better,

:47:22.:47:26.

he was a little bit more aggressive, he didn't give me time, you know,

:47:27.:47:33.

to, to play, and it was not easy I for me, then I came back, I staying

:47:34.:47:39.

a sieve, and finally, I am here, speaking with you, so it was good.

:47:40.:47:44.

-- I stayed aggressive. It was a quick match but how disruptive is it

:47:45.:47:48.

when you have to come back for a second day when you are looking

:47:49.:47:53.

forward to the second round? It is never easy, because any way, you,

:47:54.:48:00.

you expect a day of rest, and you have to practise, you have to to be

:48:01.:48:06.

focussed on what you do, and that is not easy, so it was important for me

:48:07.:48:13.

to be really focussed, you know, as soon as I was on the court, and I

:48:14.:48:19.

did it. Thank you. Well done. SUE BARKER: Big smile from

:48:20.:48:23.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he is through to the second round, he will be pleased

:48:24.:48:27.

to have that one under his bell. That was tricky and he could have a

:48:28.:48:30.

tricky second round. He could face Sam Querrey who has to finish his

:48:31.:48:35.

match. That would be tasty, two players who are proven on this

:48:36.:48:39.

surface, he is one of the game's great entertainer, twice a

:48:40.:48:42.

semifinalist, we will try and forget what happened last year when he went

:48:43.:48:46.

out in the second round. He has been to the last four twice here at

:48:47.:48:48.

Wimbledon. Let us tell you what has been

:48:49.:48:54.

happening elsewhere. On court 18 Petkovic, 20th seed. She was a

:48:55.:48:59.

semifinalist at the French Open. She cruised through in straight sets

:49:00.:49:07.

today. 6-1, 6-4.

:49:08.:49:11.

And round the grounds here we go back to Court No. Two where Stan is

:49:12.:49:16.

not far away from completing his victory now, two points away.

:49:17.:49:20.

Against Joao Sousa of Portugal. That match is on line if you want to

:49:21.:49:28.

follow that one. And on Court Three Lleyton Hewitt is

:49:29.:49:33.

involved in a battle. It is in a tie-break. It is ten points all. He

:49:34.:49:38.

was a break of serve but he has battled back. He is known as the

:49:39.:49:44.

Aussie battler. Ten points all. What an important set that will be. Out

:49:45.:49:50.

on court 12 Kei Nishikori in action. Two sets to love up. It is on serve

:49:51.:49:56.

in the third set but what a talent he is from Japan. Seeded 10. We will

:49:57.:50:02.

be keeping an eye on him if you want to follow it it is on line. That

:50:03.:50:07.

made you dizzy! On court 14 Janowicz, what a come back from him.

:50:08.:50:15.

He dropped the first set to Devvarman. He is 4-2 up in the third

:50:16.:50:21.

set. On his way to a 2-1 lead in that one. A semifinalist last year

:50:22.:50:25.

so he is defending a lot of points here. On Centre Court Sabine Lisicki

:50:26.:50:30.

who has the honour on this lady's day here, as last year's runner-up,

:50:31.:50:36.

two love up in her match against. That match is also on line.

:50:37.:50:43.

And I am delighted to say I am joined by Andrew Castle. We will

:50:44.:50:48.

talk a bit of tennis why not talk football as well. We have been

:50:49.:50:51.

following the World Cup. What is that? Today England play their final

:50:52.:50:57.

game in Brazil against Costa Rica. Here at Wimbledon, Gary is with a

:50:58.:51:01.

man who knows what it is all about to manage England. It is Steve

:51:02.:51:05.

McLaren. Later today England play their final

:51:06.:51:08.

game. What have you made of it? I mean, I think, I think it, the

:51:09.:51:13.

nation's in shock, I am in shock, because I think it happened so

:51:14.:51:16.

quickly, it is one game, the second game, and then obviously, Costa Rica

:51:17.:51:21.

winning and we are out. It is normally, I am involved with three

:51:22.:51:24.

tournaments before, you get through the group. You go to the

:51:25.:51:28.

quarter-finals, there is a build up, expectation, or sense of failure,

:51:29.:51:33.

but now it has been just so quick, two games, finished. Why has it gone

:51:34.:51:38.

wrong for England, in a nutshell? Why? I look at England. It is

:51:39.:51:43.

totally different. I think it is trying to adapt to how the modern

:51:44.:51:47.

game is going, and we talk about England two years ago, I remember

:51:48.:51:51.

watching them, it was two banks of four, one compact defending deep.

:51:52.:51:55.

Relying on counter attack, set plays to win games and we did that with

:51:56.:52:00.

Sven in three tournament, and you go out on penalties. Now, and rightly

:52:01.:52:05.

we are trying to adapt with the younger players coming through.

:52:06.:52:09.

Expand the game, open it up and that left us vulnerable at the back. If

:52:10.:52:14.

you don't defend well you don't win tournaments or games. Harry Redknapp

:52:15.:52:18.

said some of the Tottenham players didn't want to play for England on

:52:19.:52:22.

certain occasions, what do you feel about that? It was an extraordinary

:52:23.:52:26.

quote. That is the thing within football, that can be band died

:52:27.:52:31.

about. When you get a hectic schedule and the players are playing

:52:32.:52:36.

in Champions League football and you get friendlies, and they are not so

:52:37.:52:41.

high profile, and they have injuries and the club comes first towards the

:52:42.:52:43.

iped of the season You can understand what Harry is saying

:52:44.:52:46.

about that, but you know, I have worked with England very very

:52:47.:52:50.

closely, over many years and I have worked at club level, and everyone

:52:51.:52:53.

wants to play for their country, everybody. Give us three names. Who

:52:54.:52:59.

is going to win the World Cup? That is a really really tough one. Out of

:53:00.:53:04.

European teams I would say Germany have the best chance. Brazil because

:53:05.:53:08.

they have to, the intensity is there for them. Mens and women's champions

:53:09.:53:15.

at Wimbledon? I think Djokovic can't go for from that. The William, one

:53:16.:53:19.

of the Williams sisters has to be the favourite. Steve, good to see

:53:20.:53:22.

you. -- Williams.

:53:23.:53:26.

He will be enjoying the tennis. He picked Djokovic after the

:53:27.:53:29.

performance yesterday, talking there about the England team and the

:53:30.:53:33.

pressure on them, we have seen it here with Tim and more so with Andy,

:53:34.:53:36.

the pressure that is put on British player, but on the England team in

:53:37.:53:41.

football it is more so. Not only is it pressure, it veers towards abuse,

:53:42.:53:45.

if you look at social media. If you look at Wayne Rooney and the

:53:46.:53:47.

treatment that he gets on line, he is a big boy, he can handle it. He

:53:48.:53:52.

loves his tennis as well. His wife takes the two children out there,

:53:53.:53:57.

and the vitriol poured on is probably borderline illegal at

:53:58.:54:02.

times. Immoral is certainly the way. When you say pressure, it is wrong,

:54:03.:54:08.

they have to go and do it. It is our national game, the beautiful game,

:54:09.:54:12.

but would you want to put yourself into that? Are we paying the price

:54:13.:54:16.

for having a big money Premier League, where not enough English

:54:17.:54:20.

players is developing through the system? I don't know. Two games. 90

:54:21.:54:23.

minutes gone. They have to get something. The Costa re-can manager

:54:24.:54:27.

says England is the mother nation of football. I mean, he is expecting a

:54:28.:54:32.

response, but they are still playing for Secretary-General something

:54:33.:54:36.

against England. We know how hard it is to play anything when it doesn't

:54:37.:54:40.

mean anything. Was it Lampard is captain. And nine changes. It is

:54:41.:54:45.

probably goodbye to Frank. Great servant. I like Sterling though.

:54:46.:54:50.

Absolutely. And did you like Djokovic or Murray yesterday? Who

:54:51.:54:53.

impressed you the most? Dimitrov, because I was on that match on Court

:54:54.:54:57.

One, it was beyond belief. The start to the Championship, a lot of people

:54:58.:55:01.

look in great form. Someone who is looking in great form here, was

:55:02.:55:06.

Stanislas Wawrinka, when we last called in he was only two points

:55:07.:55:10.

away from winning his match. He completed that victory, here match

:55:11.:55:15.

point at 30-40. Seeded five at the Championships but he is the world

:55:16.:55:19.

number three. He is the Australian Open champion. A mild mannered man

:55:20.:55:25.

and he is through. Sop Stan the man is through to the

:55:26.:55:28.

second round. -- so.

:55:29.:55:35.

But we will be heading out to Court Number One, because Roger Federer is

:55:36.:55:39.

coming out here. It is lovely to see him back on court. He will try to

:55:40.:55:43.

want to dismiss what happened last year as well. Like Rafa. It is

:55:44.:55:46.

interesting. Apparently Roger Federer has had a bad six months.

:55:47.:55:52.

His wife has sievely drivered twin, he is at number four in the world.

:55:53.:55:58.

He has beat enMurray. Good run at the Australian Open and it has been

:55:59.:56:03.

a bad year. He still wants to play, he still has an appetite or the

:56:04.:56:07.

game. He thinks he can be a factor, and on a grass court why not? I

:56:08.:56:11.

would expect to see him go deep in the tournament again. Here he is,

:56:12.:56:16.

coming out for the 16th time here at Wimbledon. A huge ovation, there is

:56:17.:56:21.

Federer fans with the caps on, but there is so many Federer fans, he

:56:22.:56:26.

has been a great champion at this tournament. This generation is a

:56:27.:56:31.

joke, isn't it, really. We have Rafa later on on centre we have him on

:56:32.:56:37.

number one. Serena is playing. It is just, this is such a celebration

:56:38.:56:40.

this first week. When it comes down to it you expect in the men's game

:56:41.:56:46.

for the big boys sob standing. You can probably add Wawrinka to that,

:56:47.:56:52.

Dimitrov. Wrong Serb still the boss though. Interesting how Edberg is

:56:53.:56:55.

working with him. Does he need Federer to shorten the points and

:56:56.:57:01.

take the forecourt against Murray, Nadal and Djokovic? Does he need do

:57:02.:57:07.

that. What is Edberg adding. That is the way he played. Roger doesn't

:57:08.:57:14.

have Stefan's volleys. You can ask Stefan eEdberg all day long, have

:57:15.:57:19.

you caught him yet. Has anybody seen him? Hopefully we will see him on

:57:20.:57:23.

Court One. Federer is on Court One and he is a seven time champion but

:57:24.:57:28.

he is keep and eager for title number eight.

:57:29.:57:42.

It is nice having achieved so much here at Wimbledon. It has always

:57:43.:57:47.

been my dream to be able to play here, and let alone to win, and I

:57:48.:57:51.

remember watching berk and Edberg playing each other in all the

:57:52.:57:55.

finals, and just dreaming that maybe one day I could be that guy too.

:57:56.:57:58.

What has it been like working with Stefan. Are you similar characters

:57:59.:58:06.

in way? Somewhat, but different actually. I think I am more

:58:07.:58:11.

outgoing, I like to have a crowd round me, friends and family, I like

:58:12.:58:16.

when everybody is round and it is happening and lively, whereas he

:58:17.:58:20.

needed maybe a bit more down time and time to focus and that, I can

:58:21.:58:24.

switch within a minute, you know, from being like, OK, let's go, I can

:58:25.:58:30.

do that very easily, but it is clearly a pleasure, having him by my

:58:31.:58:36.

side, and getting advice and support from him, very inspiring and

:58:37.:58:41.

motivating. What advice can he possibly give you? It is the little

:58:42.:58:46.

things he doesn't need to teach me how to hit a backhand or forehand.

:58:47.:58:52.

It is when to use which shot and maybe give me that one advice, in

:58:53.:58:58.

the right moment, to give me peace of mind or motivate me in a

:58:59.:59:03.

particular moment. You are 33, do you feel 33? No, because I am 32. I

:59:04.:59:08.

am OK. You are 33 in seven weeks. Seven weeks is a long way away, it

:59:09.:59:13.

is like two weeks is a long way way, I hope I am still here. No, I am

:59:14.:59:22.

aware of it. Do you feel 32 -- 32? File 24. I can't believe how old I

:59:23.:59:28.

am. This career and this tennis life goes by in a flash. It really is. It

:59:29.:59:33.

is fun because it means you are busy, enjoying it but at the same

:59:34.:59:37.

time it is super sad that it is just, it all happens too fast. I was

:59:38.:59:43.

thinking to myself Agassi was 35, 36 when he played you in 2005 wasn't

:59:44.:59:48.

he, so you are going to be round for a long time yet, I would have

:59:49.:59:58.

thought. I don't know how long I will be around. I will push as far

:59:59.:00:04.

as I can. I hope to be successful to the very end. It is fun still

:00:05.:00:09.

playing, because my big goal ten years ago was to look at the

:00:10.:00:18.

longevity, that I play injury free, that I take care of my schedule,

:00:19.:00:23.

that I will still be around 32, 34, and that is exactly what I'm doing,

:00:24.:00:27.

so I am happy that my plan is working.

:00:28.:00:33.

He is still so hungry for the game, and talking about Andre Agassi being

:00:34.:00:38.

36, the game has moved on even from then. It is physically more.

:00:39.:00:46.

ANDREW CASTLE: He had a really bad back last year, there wasn't too

:00:47.:00:49.

much whingeing, but I think he was suffering. He has that polished feel

:00:50.:00:55.

about him, but there is the heart of a fighter and there, and I don't

:00:56.:00:59.

think he would hate it too much if he could win another slam or two,

:01:00.:01:19.

and keep Rafa from taking over his record.

:01:20.:01:24.

SUE BARKER: I think play has just got under way here between two

:01:25.:01:31.

30-year-olds. Your commentators are Tim Henman and Simon Reed.

:01:32.:01:56.

SIMON REID: There will be some good moments however long this match

:01:57.:02:02.

takes. Interesting, Tim, Roger is not

:02:03.:02:36.

rushing into the net. TIM HENMAN: And I don't think he

:02:37.:02:42.

will. The court is not particularly quick. He is happy to stay on the

:02:43.:02:49.

baseline. Happy to stay on the baseline that maybe finish the point

:02:50.:02:52.

at the net, wait for the opportunity to move forward.

:02:53.:03:11.

A little bit of luck, but he has earned that over the years. It is

:03:12.:03:23.

fascinating looking back, he beat Sampras, and then you beat him in

:03:24.:03:27.

the quarterfinals. It was very different, the conditions, and the

:03:28.:03:33.

change has been the grass. It is 100 ascent rye-grass now, which is much

:03:34.:03:35.

tougher, so the ball is much slower. The theme remains the same. On

:03:36.:04:09.

grass, it is very difficult to defend, so you want to be offensive.

:04:10.:04:19.

Whereas nowadays you might set the point up with your server and coming

:04:20.:04:23.

behind the second or third shot. And on the return, probe, and when

:04:24.:04:41.

you see an opportunity, make the move. It is another interesting

:04:42.:04:46.

aspect. When Federer has a target, he can be very good.

:04:47.:04:56.

When his opponent is staying back, he can be a bit more cautious.

:04:57.:06:03.

Interesting to see the Italian making the move forward. I think

:06:04.:06:10.

even this early stage, he realised he wasn't being too at the baseline,

:06:11.:06:15.

and felt like you would take the opportunity of following in a few

:06:16.:06:16.

serves. It is going well, three break

:06:17.:07:03.

pointss saved. Cloudier gallop Eni A pity. It was a terrific athletic

:07:04.:07:56.

stretch on the volley. The crowd have enjoyed it. And even at this

:07:57.:08:07.

early stage, you really feel that it is important for the Lorenzi just to

:08:08.:08:23.

get into this match. A lovely rally, but it is fed who importantly wins

:08:24.:08:35.

it, and you can see how pleased he was at doing just that.

:08:36.:08:50.

He still moves with such grace and balance and speed.

:08:51.:10:05.

A little shake of the head from Fedorov. He doesn't want to accept

:10:06.:10:11.

shots like that. -- Federer. Didn't last long. Never is the

:10:12.:10:53.

fastest serve, but a mph with perfect positioning.

:10:54.:12:04.

Worth a go for Lorenzi? It is about him trying to find the balance.

:12:05.:12:14.

Federer is not going to beat himself. Second ace for Federer, and

:12:15.:12:22.

it is 3-0. You will know an awful lot about

:12:23.:12:47.

Federer. Just to put you in the picture with Lorenzi. He is just a

:12:48.:13:02.

few months younger. 17 slams for Federer, and I'm afraid Lorenzi is

:13:03.:13:10.

in his 13th major and has never won a match. He has a ranking of 83. He

:13:11.:13:21.

had a high of 49. This year he has got to the final in Sao Paulo. He

:13:22.:13:30.

has never won a match at Wimbledon. He has no proven record. It is a

:13:31.:13:38.

tough ask for him today, but he has to go out there and appreciate he

:13:39.:13:41.

has nothing to lose and lots to gain, and try to enjoy the whole

:13:42.:13:47.

process, have a game plan, decide the way he wants to play. If he just

:13:48.:13:53.

goes out there reacting to the way Federer is playing, it will be over

:13:54.:13:58.

very quickly. UMPIRE: Faults. Lorenzi is

:13:59.:14:04.

challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:14:05.:14:15.

UMPIRE: 15-0. Mr Lorenzi has two challenges remaining.

:14:16.:14:47.

He had plenty of time to pick the passing shot.

:14:48.:15:03.

I think this is the classic 1-to punch on the return of serve.

:15:04.:15:20.

That wasn't coming back, and it is 4-1, Federer.

:15:21.:17:56.

Tim, you talked about all the talents that Federer had, and one

:17:57.:18:05.

word I want to focus on is speed. A lot of good judges say to me that

:18:06.:18:09.

they think he has just lost a bit of speed, maybe not much else, but a

:18:10.:18:14.

little bit of speed. I think it is inevitable. It may only be a quarter

:18:15.:18:24.

of a step, but if you are a quarter of a step moving to the ball and a

:18:25.:18:29.

quarter of a step getting back, it all adds up, and he will be compared

:18:30.:18:35.

to the movement of Nadal and Djokovic and Murray. But it is also

:18:36.:18:42.

his balance and his anticipation. And if he is doing too much running

:18:43.:18:47.

out wide and at the baseline, it won't be impacted his game style. He

:18:48.:18:53.

is the one who always wants to look to get to the front and dictate the

:18:54.:18:57.

point. It is an aspect to look out for, but he wants to keep the point

:18:58.:19:06.

is an aspect to look out for, but he wants to keep the points relatively

:19:07.:19:09.

short as he has done well so far here.

:19:10.:19:25.

Again, the timing impeccable. Once the ball gets below the height of

:19:26.:19:41.

the net, it is very difficult to generate much with the volley.

:19:42.:19:55.

He is just starting to fray a little bit, Lorenzi. There is just no let

:19:56.:20:29.

up with Federer. UMPIRE: 15-40. A rare gift from

:20:30.:21:02.

Fedorov, but as it happens, Lorenzi is still down -- a rare gift from

:21:03.:21:04.

Federer. Federer is fed up with himself

:21:05.:21:26.

there. And Federer looking increasingly

:21:27.:22:22.

good. He is just starting to dismantle Lorenzi's game, it seems.

:22:23.:23:01.

Lorenzi, he has never won Grand Slam match. Another gift.

:23:02.:23:21.

CROWD: Come on, Roger! I think he missed a volley in 1986, I think was

:23:22.:23:30.

the last time. Federer started at the baseline, but

:23:31.:24:11.

is coming forward more and more now. Again, good placement from federal,

:24:12.:24:22.

-- Federer, not the fastest, but the placement is good. It is not the

:24:23.:24:27.

first time he has been picked off when he has run forward.

:24:28.:25:00.

He hasn't really won tournaments from the net, so it isn't his

:25:01.:25:08.

natural place. Someone like Ed Berg was so good in the way he covered.

:25:09.:25:32.

The conditions of the game have changed, and sometimes he volleys

:25:33.:25:37.

well, but sometimes he ends up covering the middle.

:25:38.:25:41.

So, there is the first set, 6-1 in 24 minutes.

:25:42.:25:47.

UMPIRE: New balls, please. SUE BARKER: And the Federer fans are

:25:48.:25:54.

delighted with that. If you want to continue watching this match, you

:25:55.:25:59.

can over on BBC One. We are going to be taking you hear over to see

:26:00.:26:02.

Lleyton Hewitt in just a moment. But before that, Kei Nishikori of Japan

:26:03.:26:09.

is through in straight sets against Kenny De Schepper. He is another of

:26:10.:26:18.

those tipped for the top, a real talent from Japan. Over on Centre

:26:19.:26:27.

Court at the moment, Sabine Lisicki in control there. Last year's

:26:28.:26:34.

runner-up is 6-2 and 2-1 up with a break of serve. That is on the red

:26:35.:26:40.

button if you want to follow it. On court 17, Jerzy Janowicz is making a

:26:41.:26:53.

comeback against Farman of India. -- Devvarman. We will keep an ion that

:26:54.:27:05.

out on court 17. We are going to head to court number three to see

:27:06.:27:09.

this man, Lleyton Hewitt, competing in his 61st Grand Slam event, such a

:27:10.:27:14.

battler. He is involved in another battle here. Your commentators are

:27:15.:27:33.

Peter Fleming and one Macintosh. PETER FLEMING: A scoreline of six

:27:34.:27:43.

games to one where he failed to hold serve in the first set. It has been

:27:44.:28:03.

a strange match, because Hewitt really dominant in the first and

:28:04.:28:09.

third sets, but went away in the second set. He had seven set points

:28:10.:28:21.

that he dropped. Both players have slipped a lot on this court's

:28:22.:28:24.

surface. And this guy, Przysiezny, when he is

:28:25.:28:51.

feeling confident, he is a player, but it hasn't happened but often

:28:52.:29:25.

today. We have seen flashes of Przysiezny's brilliance as he again

:29:26.:29:29.

struggles to get a foothold on this surface. The backhand in particular

:29:30.:29:36.

whether it has been crosscourt or down the line, has been impressive.

:29:37.:29:40.

Just not consistent or frequent enough from his point of view.

:29:41.:30:35.

the net, secured his balance, and it brings about great point, that final

:30:36.:30:43.

forehand volley. Still covers the net, as well as

:30:44.:30:47.

most. UMPIRE: Ball was called out. The

:30:48.:32:03.

lines man was unsided. That is why there was no call.

:32:04.:32:10.

The umpire was correct overall. UMPIRE: Advantage, deuce.

:32:11.:32:29.

Pascal is flustered I think. "I don't understand this conversation."

:32:30.:32:39.

Covering the net very well on that occasion.

:32:40.:32:50.

Creating an acute angle on that final finishing volley.

:32:51.:33:23.

Mately Przysiezny shoulds -- holds serve. First time he has done so,

:33:24.:33:31.

four attempts, having failed to hold serve in the course of that third

:33:32.:33:37.

set. So approaching two-and-a-half hours of play now. The fans here, it

:33:38.:33:45.

has been a rather strange game. Hewitt in the aseven Dan city the

:33:46.:33:51.

opening set,/ascendancy, the third set, in coatle control. The second

:33:52.:33:56.

set, Hewitt went off the ball a bit. -- total control. He failed to

:33:57.:34:00.

capitalise on chances and opportunities that he created.

:34:01.:34:04.

So Hewitt to serve, going with serve, second game, fourth set.

:34:05.:34:43.

Przysiezny longing to see if there is chalk on the ball. Seventh ace of

:34:44.:34:48.

the match for Hewitt. He has played that drop shot

:34:49.:35:34.

successfully a few times but that time a dismal effort.

:35:35.:35:45.

Tony Roach, the coach of Lleyton Hewitt. Since 2011.

:35:46.:36:15.

He know has done ten everything in tennis he has done in tennis

:36:16.:36:20.

everything you could think of. Great coach.

:36:21.:36:52.

An unwanted characteristic of Przysiezny's game, the enforced

:36:53.:36:58.

errors during the course of this game.

:36:59.:37:10.

I was surprised to see those 16 enforced errors next to Hewitt's

:37:11.:37:16.

name. I would have thought it was more than that.

:37:17.:37:58.

11th ace of the match for Przysiezny.

:37:59.:38:16.

So remain on serve here in set number four, Przysiezn leading two

:38:17.:38:30.

games to one. Trailing 2-1.

:38:31.:38:38.

So Lleyton Hewitt, 16th straight Wimbledon appearance, the champion

:38:39.:38:55.

in 2002. Engaged in big exchanges from the baseline, that is where

:38:56.:38:59.

Przysiezn has produced some terrific winners.

:39:00.:39:02.

Particularly from his backhand, but those moments of brilliance, an

:39:03.:39:08.

unwanted counter balance have been the high number of unforced errors.

:39:09.:39:18.

Preponderance ed counter balance have been the high number of

:39:19.:39:24.

unforced errors. Preponderance What that graphic doesn't show is that

:39:25.:39:29.

Hewitt produced the most lovely love earlier on in the match.

:39:30.:39:36.

We have seen all facets of his game, outbursts of emotion, some

:39:37.:39:41.

blistering back hands. But during that second, when he

:39:42.:39:46.

conceded those seven set points in the tie-break, just became a bit

:39:47.:39:50.

conservative. So we are on serve, fourth game, fourth set, Hewitt

:39:51.:39:52.

leading 2-1. Well, once again, the drop shot from

:39:53.:40:51.

Przysiezny and as his' tempted to change direction, lost traction with

:40:52.:40:57.

the turf -- as he attempted. Found himself on the court. Tossed the

:40:58.:41:04.

racquet in frustration and exasperation as much as anything

:41:05.:41:27.

else. UMPIRE: Ball was called out. So

:41:28.:41:40.

Hawk-Eye called into action here. What will the verdict be? The replay

:41:41.:41:43.

because it was in. Przysiezny having conversations with

:41:44.:42:52.

his inner voice. Mutterings occurring in his mind. He

:42:53.:42:54.

needs to focus on the task at hand. That was the third double fault of

:42:55.:43:14.

the match for Hewitt. The second was to concede the second set tie-break.

:43:15.:43:17.

16-14. A bruising exchange to conclude that

:43:18.:43:22.

second set. The racquet being used as a

:43:23.:43:46.

basketball from Przysiezny. There have been many moments in the match

:43:47.:43:50.

where it has been all-or-nothing, in his strokeplay and shot selection.

:43:51.:44:09.

Przysiezny is going through a bad moment. Can Hewitt capitalise? He

:44:10.:44:19.

looks to close out this first round match, which remains on serve here

:44:20.:44:23.

in set number four. More than two-and-a-half hours on

:44:24.:44:30.

court now. There has been a topsy-turvy match up tow this point.

:44:31.:44:33.

-- up to this point. Hewitt covering the net very

:44:34.:45:13.

effectively. Wonderful racquet head control.

:45:14.:45:17.

Again, firing himself up, giving the crowd something to cheer about.

:45:18.:45:23.

The spectators have been a source of inspiration for Hewitt.

:45:24.:45:47.

His body language displays signs of deflation, despondency in fact. This

:45:48.:45:56.

man's play, aside that that let up in set number two, he has been of a

:45:57.:46:05.

consistently high level. Oh, fantastic.

:46:06.:46:10.

A hyped up Hewitt has fashioned three break points. He appeared to

:46:11.:46:22.

have done enough, but look at the retrieval skills. The racquet head,

:46:23.:46:27.

brilliant from Lleyton Hewitt. And that is what it means to him.

:46:28.:46:33.

Big moment now, in the course of this match.

:46:34.:47:09.

Still break point. Both players have struggled with

:47:10.:47:37.

their footing. Particularly outside the tram lines where the grass is a

:47:38.:47:39.

bit greener. Break point number four.

:47:40.:48:21.

Lleyton Hewitt's mother in the yellow T-shirt. Applauding her son's

:48:22.:48:26.

efforts. His father on the left in the baseball cap.

:48:27.:48:35.

12th ace. 124mph. Out wide to the backhand side from

:48:36.:48:41.

Przysiezny. Hewitt prevails to bring about his

:48:42.:50:01.

fifth break point opportunity. Hewitt. Hewitt leads 3-2. Intark

:50:02.:51:05.

that looked long and that gives Leighton the break. We will be back

:51:06.:51:08.

with this match in a moment. Let us show you what has been happening

:51:09.:51:14.

elsewhere. Radwanska is through, out on court two. She won, runner-up two

:51:15.:51:21.

years ago, semifinalist last year, losing 9 listen 2347 the third to

:51:22.:51:26.

Sabine Lisicki. She is through, the opening round.

:51:27.:51:31.

-- 9-2. That was a match finished and this is Caroline Wozniacki the

:51:32.:51:37.

16th seed, who has gone through against Peer. The formed number one

:51:38.:51:48.

will face broady I in round two. -- Broady. Sabine Lisicki had the

:51:49.:51:52.

honour of opening Centre Court as the runner-up last year, she wasn't

:51:53.:52:00.

on long. So Sabine Lisicki became the first German woman through to a

:52:01.:52:06.

Grand Slam final since Steffi Graf last year. Welcome to Centre Court

:52:07.:52:11.

this year. Those are some results so let us update court 17th. We have

:52:12.:52:16.

been following this. Janowicz, seeded 15. It is going the distance.

:52:17.:52:21.

It is in the fifth and final set. If you want to watch that it is live on

:52:22.:52:25.

the red button. That is on court 17. Over on Court

:52:26.:52:31.

One, Roger Federer in action, and going very well indeed against Paolo

:52:32.:52:38.

Lorenzi, 6-1, 4-1 with so the seven time champion in command on Court

:52:39.:52:42.

One. We are heading back to Court No. Three.

:52:43.:53:32.

One wonders whether Przysiezny has given up in some part of his mind

:53:33.:53:41.

here, his body language doesn't an -- appear to be very positive.

:53:42.:53:44.

Rather lacklustre behind the baseline.

:53:45.:53:57.

Well, very strange, in terms of what he chose to do during that point.

:53:58.:54:09.

This is a give away point here, this is seriously, you don't do that when

:54:10.:54:10.

you are winning. He has given up the ghost here,

:54:11.:54:29.

mentally. He is in the middle of a horror

:54:30.:54:34.

stretch is Przysiezny. He entered this first round match up

:54:35.:54:40.

on Court No. Three, looking to end a 13 match losing streak. His only win

:54:41.:54:47.

in 2014 came in the first round of the Australian Open. So really, he

:54:48.:54:53.

has got out of the winning habit. Fought tooth and nail to take the

:54:54.:55:00.

second set on a tie-break. Just gave up, that previous service game

:55:01.:55:01.

against Hewitt. Produces his 13th ace of the match.

:55:02.:55:27.

He is a break down. Hewitt is just, the way he bend to

:55:28.:55:32.

get those returns of serve back in play, somehow. Makes his opponent

:55:33.:55:35.

play one more shot. Well, a game where he held serve to

:55:36.:56:13.

love. Really efficient fashion, but he is

:56:14.:56:18.

still a break down, and during this change of end now, one wonders what

:56:19.:56:21.

must be going through his mine. There was a real let down mentally

:56:22.:56:27.

on Hewitt's previous service game from Przysiezny, now he has to

:56:28.:56:30.

summon up resilience, some belief and just try and hang in a point at

:56:31.:56:34.

a time if he hopes to turn this round and take to it a fifth and

:56:35.:56:37.

deciding set. Well also from his side he has to regroup, because he

:56:38.:56:41.

lost it there on that service game, to play that shot between his leg,

:56:42.:56:47.

when he had plenty of time to do, percentage shot, and Lleyton Hewitt

:56:48.:56:51.

saw that as well, so all that does is just fuel Lleyton Hewitt's fire

:56:52.:56:57.

up. He thinks I have this fellow now, he is sort of mentally just

:56:58.:57:02.

playing sloppy shots and losing heart, and that just, when you play

:57:03.:57:06.

against someone like Lleyton Hewitt. This shot here, this is ridiculous.

:57:07.:57:10.

It is fun to watch it but it is stupid. If you are a coach you would

:57:11.:57:17.

go, you don't hit that shot up less you are up. That was not good. This

:57:18.:57:23.

is Wimbledon, this is a Grand Slam after all, and that is inexcusable.

:57:24.:57:30.

His third consecutive appearance here at Wimbledon. Made the second

:57:31.:57:36.

round on both previous occasions. In trouble here.

:57:37.:58:13.

Excellent rally there. Looks like he's engaged back in the battle

:58:14.:58:20.

again there, with that point. At least he is focussed again.

:58:21.:58:49.

Stark contrast to Przysiezny. The intensity level of Hewitt has

:58:50.:58:55.

remained height throughout. sets to one, you can't make an error

:58:56.:59:47.

like that. A rare trip forward to the net for

:59:48.:00:53.

serve and volley. Oh, overruled!

:00:54.:01:37.

UMPIRE: Challenging the ball on the left. The ball was called in. Replay

:01:38.:01:47.

the point. Mr Przysiezny has one challenge remaining.

:01:48.:02:13.

Hewitt has out a few problems this afternoon with his ball toss. That

:02:14.:02:25.

was a terrible mistake. That second serve was just waiting to be

:02:26.:02:28.

attacked. Straight on to his forehand, 88. You just can't miss

:02:29.:02:32.

those sort of returns. Lleyton Hewitt's serve has gone off

:02:33.:02:53.

this game. It is a huge opportunity. That is in. A very impressive return

:02:54.:02:59.

to bring about the second deuce. That is what he has got to do. You

:03:00.:03:04.

have to make sure you don't miss it. UMPIRE: Let, first service.

:03:05.:03:18.

Not getting any punch in the server the moment. It is likely is getting

:03:19.:03:20.

a little bit tight, Lleyton Hewitt. He made sure he got batting, slowed

:03:21.:03:43.

it down, 78 miles an hour. -- got that in.

:03:44.:04:14.

Another unforced error on the backhand wing from Przysiezny means

:04:15.:04:18.

he is serving to stay in the match. He just seems to wander in and out,

:04:19.:05:35.

sometimes brilliant, just looks so good, and then throws in a couple of

:05:36.:05:41.

points where you wonder, is this the same player?

:05:42.:05:55.

117 mph, second serve, he goes for. Unpredictable.

:05:56.:07:28.

Hewitt couldn't really go at that forehand, miss timed it a little

:07:29.:07:32.

bit. That looked like it bounced twice

:07:33.:07:56.

before it hit the net! Followed by stroke play like that.

:07:57.:08:21.

He has so much talent, but you can't have this up and down to Grand Slam,

:08:22.:08:31.

you have to be more solid. And again, that really is a bit extreme,

:08:32.:08:39.

but it has been the match in microcosm from Przysiezny's point of

:08:40.:08:43.

view. Brilliance followed by unforced error is.

:08:44.:09:04.

121 miles per hour on a second serve ace at deuce to stay in the match.

:09:05.:09:53.

on it in a flash. Poor shot selection there. That is the wrong

:09:54.:09:59.

position to player drop shot. Lleyton Hewitt had about half an

:10:00.:10:02.

hour to spare getting to that ball. He is just not thinking.

:10:03.:10:14.

And Lleyton you know is thinking of finishing this game. When you are

:10:15.:10:24.

playing somebody who is so unpredictable, you just don't know.

:10:25.:10:39.

So, Przysiezny ultimately holds serve, but Lleyton Hewitt still has

:10:40.:10:47.

the opportunity to close out this match. He leads 5-4 and by two sets

:10:48.:10:53.

to one approaching three hours of play.

:10:54.:10:59.

The outcome of this match to a large extent in his hands now. His service

:11:00.:11:12.

game has been very solid. It will be interesting to see if he takes the

:11:13.:11:16.

pays off his first serve and makes sure he gets a large percentage in

:11:17.:11:20.

rather than going for cheap point, and keep his opponent from attacking

:11:21.:11:24.

his second serve, because you just don't know what he is going to do.

:11:25.:11:30.

It is bizarre playing against someone like that, because the

:11:31.:11:33.

rhythm is not there, and you can't read his game. I don't think he

:11:34.:11:39.

knows what he's going to do. It's not like he has a plan. I think the

:11:40.:11:45.

ball just comes and he just goes for it one way or the other, and if it

:11:46.:11:49.

works, it works, and if it doesn't, next point. So, Lleyton Hewitt

:11:50.:11:56.

preparing to serve for the match. He leads 5-4 and by two sets to one.

:11:57.:12:27.

Well wide. He is looking at his racket questioningly.

:12:28.:12:48.

UMPIRE: The ball was called in. 30-0. No challenges remaining.

:12:49.:13:20.

So, three match points the Lleyton Hewitt.

:13:21.:13:48.

UMPIRE: Game, set and match Hewitt. Celebrations abound the late in

:13:49.:14:02.

Hewitt who has secured his passage through to the second round courtesy

:14:03.:14:09.

of a 4-macro-set win over Michal Przysiezny. Lleyton Hewitt is

:14:10.:14:16.

through to the second round, to the delight of the Aussie contingent

:14:17.:14:23.

here on Court three. SUE BARKER: Well, those

:14:24.:14:27.

here on Court three. SUE BARKER: Well, those Aussie fans,

:14:28.:14:32.

Lleyton Hewitt has given them so much to cheer about over the years,

:14:33.:14:36.

now 33 years of age, he is always tough to beat and always good on a

:14:37.:14:40.

grass court. A former champion here. So he could face Jerzy Janowicz in

:14:41.:14:47.

the next round, who is currently serving for the match. What a treat

:14:48.:14:53.

that would be in the second round. So, we move away from court number

:14:54.:14:59.

three, and we head over to Centre Court in a moment to see the current

:15:00.:15:01.

world number one. Well, he is the current world number

:15:02.:15:34.

one, but ceded two at the Championships, because grass court

:15:35.:15:36.

performances recently are taken into account. He is under against Martin

:15:37.:15:46.

Klizan, so let's join this match with Peter Fleming and Andrew

:15:47.:15:52.

Castle. ANDREW CASTLE: That is not the first

:15:53.:15:58.

speedy forehand we have seen from Martin Klizan. He hit a 100 mph

:15:59.:16:12.

return off Nadal's second serve. Here we are, 12 minutes played, and

:16:13.:16:14.

it has been great. PETER FLEMING: Klizan appears to

:16:15.:16:40.

come to come into this game quite determined. Last year at the French

:16:41.:16:46.

Open, on the clay that Nadal has dominated in Paris, the nine of the

:16:47.:16:51.

ten years that he has played there, Klizan got a set. So he has gone toe

:16:52.:17:02.

to toe in Nadal's backyard and picked up a set. In fact, it was the

:17:03.:17:08.

first set. Nadal had to work hard to get into that match and then win.

:17:09.:18:05.

The double fault there may illustrate that Rafa is very well

:18:06.:18:16.

aware of the threat that Klizan presents, so maybe he is over

:18:17.:18:19.

pressing. They are certainly going to take to

:18:20.:18:46.

Martin Klizan, this crowd, especially if he can get ahead.

:18:47.:19:09.

First ace. That's not fair. Why not? I don't know. You want Klizan

:19:10.:19:23.

to get ahead here, to make a match of this?

:19:24.:19:31.

You know Rafa can grind you down from the back of the court, but when

:19:32.:19:34.

he's heating aces as well. He has poked it long. He has already

:19:35.:20:06.

had joy disguising a shorthand drop shot. It is the pressure that Nadal

:20:07.:20:12.

puts on you to hit the perfect approach shot.

:20:13.:20:37.

UMPIRE: Game, Nadal. Nadal leads two games to one, first

:20:38.:20:52.

set. What an intriguing start. Rafael Nadal comes in as a

:20:53.:20:58.

favourite, obviously the man with a reputation,

:20:59.:20:58.

Rafael Nadal comes in as a favourite, obviously the man the

:20:59.:21:01.

charisma, all of that, but you still have to go out there and get the job

:21:02.:21:07.

done. The last three grass court matches that he has played, he has

:21:08.:21:15.

lost. In 2012, he lost to Lukas Rosol, you remember that. Last year,

:21:16.:21:26.

Steve D'Arcy. It was a first ever Grand Slam first round loss to

:21:27.:21:31.

Nadal. And then he lost to Dustin Brown of Germany. So, Rafa would

:21:32.:21:40.

have felt quite a bit of trepidation coming into this match, undoubtedly.

:21:41.:21:44.

He looks ready sharp, though, thus far. Klizan came out really

:21:45.:21:49.

slugging. UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly,

:21:50.:21:58.

please, ladies and gentlemen. Time. As this first set wears on,

:21:59.:22:07.

hopefully Nadal will relaxed a little bit more and settle into what

:22:08.:22:13.

he wants to do. Can Klizan keep up this sort of intensity for an

:22:14.:22:16.

extended period of time? UMPIRE: Please take your seats.

:22:17.:22:24.

Players are ready. So, game four. Each game has had break points.

:22:25.:22:52.

I think that might be worth a challenge. At nothing. I think it

:22:53.:22:56.

was an overrule. That was a Dimitrov -like move, it

:22:57.:24:12.

was Djokovic -esque. Very quick around the court.

:24:13.:24:58.

today that Klizan has taken the backhand up to the line. Rafa

:24:59.:25:06.

nowhere to be seen. Not an easy shot.

:25:07.:25:25.

UMPIRE: Two games all, first set. He looks pretty confident. How long can

:25:26.:25:35.

he last at this pace? He looks to have a very clear game

:25:36.:26:30.

plan. That is Martin down, a fine career, excellent strategy. Nadal

:26:31.:26:37.

always move to try to get that forehand.

:26:38.:26:42.

UMPIRE: Out. He will just skip to his right, our

:26:43.:26:59.

left as we look down the court. Klizan perhaps looked to punish the

:27:00.:27:04.

forehand early in the rally, the gap that Nadal leaves.

:27:05.:27:57.

Well, that's time, Nadal quick to react. He did actually get it,

:27:58.:28:08.

but... It is a long way down, isn't it? The knee is not perhaps perfect

:28:09.:28:13.

these days, 28 years of age. UMPIRE: Nadal leads three games to

:28:14.:29:12.

two, first set. Martin Klizan, six foot three, a

:29:13.:29:21.

high of 26 in the world last year. He has won couple of titles, Saint

:29:22.:29:25.

Petersburg in 2012. He was named ATP new, of the year. He became the

:29:26.:29:41.

first Slovakian since Dominic Hrbati. He had an injury and

:29:42.:29:46.

Fountains of lower down in the rankings than he wanted to be this

:29:47.:29:53.

year. He made the third round of the Australian Open this year, and beat

:29:54.:29:56.

Kei Nishikori at the French Open. Seppi is clearly confident. Caught a

:29:57.:30:01.

finalist in Eastbourne. 24 years old.

:30:02.:30:10.

UMPIRE: Time, please. He is unafraid of the reputation who

:30:11.:30:16.

is facing. Unafraid, perhaps. But equipped to master it? That is

:30:17.:30:19.

another matter. bearing as Carroll Cichiera and

:30:20.:32:49.

others from that part of the world. That was a miraculous shot.

:32:50.:33:01.

He is getting quite a bit of joy out of attacking the Nadal forehand.

:33:02.:33:23.

I think the crowd are delighted to see Klizan come out here and go toe

:33:24.:33:34.

to toe with Nadal. So often the big names come out here with such an

:33:35.:33:38.

advantage over the lower ranked players because they have played so

:33:39.:33:42.

many more times in this environment, but Klizan seems to be

:33:43.:33:44.

enjoying himself. anyone in the game today. It comes

:33:45.:35:08.

in, says, pass me, go on. UMPIRE: Correction, replay the

:35:09.:36:25.

point. There is normally somebody who feels hard done by hand on this

:36:26.:36:32.

occasion it will be Martin Klizan. He had a wonderful ball on the

:36:33.:36:33.

baseline. Yeah, there you go. The lines and 50

:36:34.:37:05.

millimetres thick, everywhere but the baseline, where they are 100.

:37:06.:37:21.

He is not going to let Nadal camp out in this backhand corner.

:37:22.:37:55.

UMPIRE: New balls, please. Brilliant 34 minutes, really enjoyable first

:37:56.:38:08.

round match. Rafael Nadal not used to winning matches on grass, even

:38:09.:38:16.

though here's the Wimbledon champion. It must be difficult to be

:38:17.:38:23.

one of the top three, four, five guys in the world, every single

:38:24.:38:27.

player that you play against, these highly tuned athletes coming at you

:38:28.:38:33.

with nothing to lose. Sure it must be and the thing that really

:38:34.:38:38.

impresses me is how Ned Dell comes out in such an emotional state every

:38:39.:38:43.

single match he plays because it requires such a huge amount of

:38:44.:38:51.

effort to play the way that he does. And he almost never seems to suffer

:38:52.:39:02.

a let down. A let down or indeed an emotional meltdown, because when you

:39:03.:39:10.

get so into it, you can overheat, but he seems to manage it perfectly

:39:11.:39:18.

time and time again. It is a hot day in here today. It must be 24, 20

:39:19.:39:26.

five Celsius. It feels around about that at the moment. The possibility

:39:27.:39:32.

of showers later on, but my old and scattered, so hopefully Wimbledon

:39:33.:39:44.

will miss them, unlike last night. Martin Klizan of Slovakia, top man

:39:45.:39:51.

from that country, from the biggest city in his country. Serving with

:39:52.:39:53.

new tennis balls here. It is another fine service game with

:39:54.:42:45.

Martin's coach looking down on. Parity after 38 minutes. Anybody in

:42:46.:42:51.

the Klizan camp would have taken that. Ned Dell has been serving a

:42:52.:42:57.

lot of the backhand. It would strike me that the backhand is pretty

:42:58.:43:01.

consistent on the return, doesn't need to take a big swing like Novak

:43:02.:43:07.

Djokovic. Nadal has got a match on his hands at the moment.

:43:08.:43:23.

Well, the first slip for Klizan today. When you do go outside of the

:43:24.:43:30.

tramlines, it is still very green. It is always the move recovering

:43:31.:44:17.

back to the middle of the court, isn't it? It is that push. It is

:44:18.:44:27.

scary. It looks like he didn't get into trouble there but it was close.

:44:28.:44:58.

The second serve was short and slow, 81 mph, and duly punished.

:44:59.:45:39.

The clarity of the game plan from Klizan is impressive, but so is the

:45:40.:45:50.

execution of that game plan. Intelligent man. Speaks six

:45:51.:45:56.

languages, brings that intelligence to his play.

:45:57.:46:17.

Rafael Nadal will want that volley back, that was a terrible one. Yes,

:46:18.:46:32.

but Klizan is impressing with how he's getting around the court. That

:46:33.:46:34.

is a nervous volley. This huge surprise. The volley was a

:46:35.:47:14.

shocker on the panel to in point. The second serve would signify

:47:15.:47:20.

something of a crisis. -- the penultimate point. We talk about the

:47:21.:47:30.

jaw-dropping exploits of Rafael Nadal with his nine French Opens of

:47:31.:47:37.

course but Klizan has played a lot of matches this year. In Munich he

:47:38.:47:44.

qualified in one tournament, eight victories in nine days so he is

:47:45.:47:48.

hardened for battle and he will expect to be tested in this coming

:47:49.:47:53.

game, but he is a thankful recipient of that bonus there. I didn't see

:47:54.:48:03.

that volley quite as harshly as you did. I thought perhaps Nadal thought

:48:04.:48:09.

he needed to hit it into the open court, Klizan got up there very

:48:10.:48:25.

quickly. The double fault is a bit of a shocker. Well, you know? That's

:48:26.:48:32.

why they play the matches. They are not played on paper. You have got to

:48:33.:48:39.

get the job done. Fergus Murphy just saying to Rafael Nadal saying, get

:48:40.:48:43.

on with it. Between games, you have got to be ready. Perhaps a little

:48:44.:48:51.

shell-shocked there. Nadal needs to break, otherwise the first set is

:48:52.:48:53.

gone. You are right, Andrew, he is

:48:54.:49:57.

certainly going to put as much pressure on Klizan as possible in

:49:58.:49:58.

this situation. Klizan mishit a couple of backhands

:49:59.:50:45.

but fortuitously they both landed in the court.

:50:46.:51:23.

That was a bold second serve. He has got such a clear idea of what he

:51:24.:51:28.

wants to do. Take that! Martin Klizan, number 51

:51:29.:52:01.

in the world, 50 places between him and the guy he is playing, but he

:52:02.:52:09.

has taken the first set 6-4. He ended the set the same way he began

:52:10.:52:16.

it, aggressively. He has taken a set from Rafael Nadal before at the

:52:17.:52:20.

French Open so perhaps this won't surprise him. Now we welcome to the

:52:21.:52:27.

commentary John McEnroe. Something going on here? How are you? I'm

:52:28.:52:33.

great. I heard you a bit last night in the Andy Murray documentary,

:52:34.:52:42.

really nicely done. Thank you. We normally wave at each other across

:52:43.:52:48.

the court, don't we? I was doing Roger's match, obviously his wasn't

:52:49.:52:55.

competitive, then I see Klizan... How do you pronounce it? We have

:52:56.:53:04.

been saying Klizan. At the break point he stood way over Nadal daring

:53:05.:53:11.

him, and he got the double faults, then suddenly he thought Rafael

:53:12.:53:16.

Nadal will pick it up, 0-30, this guy is going to get tight. He is

:53:17.:53:22.

looking dangerous. What did you make of the Nadal volley that played

:53:23.:53:29.

Klizan in? I watching you with John Inverdale yesterday saying Nadal has

:53:30.:53:39.

the best volleys in the game. I do think he has tremendous volleys. The

:53:40.:53:43.

thing is that his movement is so keen to him that when he is not

:53:44.:53:48.

confident with that, the rest of his game suffers, but make no mistake,

:53:49.:53:56.

this guy is a dangerous first-round opponent. He didn't qualify in the

:53:57.:54:05.

Australian com he got in with the lucky loser and you can see his

:54:06.:54:09.

confidence is starting to come back. Missing time with some injuries, and

:54:10.:54:15.

this guy is like back to work. I think he got to number 30 in the

:54:16.:54:22.

world. It was 26 in the world, and one qualifying in Munich this year.

:54:23.:54:27.

He has been through the ringer a bit, I think he is better than he

:54:28.:54:32.

has ever been right now and that makes it a handful for the Dell. It

:54:33.:54:37.

has to be a great advantage for him from a physical standpoint playing

:54:38.:54:43.

on grass rather than clay. Let's see what happens from here.

:54:44.:56:02.

UMPIRE: Correction, first serve. It looked to be clearly in, no doubt

:56:03.:56:11.

about it. The linesman called it out, quickly overruled.

:56:12.:56:28.

That is the shot that has brought him so much joy so far today,

:56:29.:56:33.

attacking Nadal's forehand. I would use that serve more and

:56:34.:57:08.

more. Dare him to go big, he is a streaky player. Open the court up.

:57:09.:58:25.

These guys, Carlos Costa, has been with him for years, uncle Tony...

:58:26.:58:34.

Worried because the results have not been there for him on this surface

:58:35.:58:38.

in the last couple of years. He could play Rosal. A succession of

:58:39.:59:07.

inspired opponents to get rid of first.

:59:08.:59:30.

The splits again. He is OK. I think that is smart played by Nadal to

:59:31.:59:45.

bring him forward, use that slice. He is not that comfortable at the

:59:46.:59:51.

net, he much prefers to dictate off the ground with the forehand.

:59:52.:00:25.

that serve. He doesn't like to change. When he gets something in

:00:26.:00:31.

his head he likes to stick with it. Nothing he can do there.

:00:32.:01:33.

That is really strong! It is. Guess who, by the way? David Beckham?

:01:34.:01:49.

LAUGHTER . You've got me. Who is it? Hugh

:01:50.:02:00.

Jackman. Is that him? The Mac I would not have thought that. We're

:02:01.:02:09.

not convinced. I might have to challenge! We will get Hawk-Eye

:02:10.:02:20.

Ahmad! -- we will get Hawk-Eye on that. That is the way the match

:02:21.:02:21.

began! He thought that was going to go

:02:22.:04:02.

along and did not even swing at it. Unbelievable! It is incredible, that

:04:03.:04:36.

footwork. Try that if you are a tennis player and see how many times

:04:37.:04:41.

out of ten it goes in! That was double break points down.

:04:42.:05:43.

Martin Klizan has done a wonderful job of taking Rafa out of his

:05:44.:05:49.

comfort zone. He doesn't look at all happy right now.

:05:50.:06:08.

If you are going to hit a serve and a 100 mph to a left-hander who hits

:06:09.:06:15.

it that well you had better catch the line. You've got to place it

:06:16.:07:18.

just right. He did. It is amazing, since he came near her as a

:07:19.:07:23.

17-year-old in 23, beat Mario and Jake and Lee Childs who is now

:07:24.:07:31.

coaching at Queen's Club, you are going to have to beat him, Nadal,

:07:32.:07:37.

execute the game plan from beginning to end because he won't give

:07:38.:07:41.

anything away. What is even more amazing that, did you see when he

:07:42.:07:45.

hit the ball to win that game and jumped up and pumped his fist? He is

:07:46.:07:51.

down 6-4 in the first round of Wimbledon and this guy looked like

:07:52.:07:54.

he just reached the finals again. That is so admirable. He's got to be

:07:55.:08:01.

wondering what he's got to do to beat these guys like because Rosol,

:08:02.:08:07.

Steve Darcis, and Klizan, all good professionals but they are inspired

:08:08.:08:13.

on grass every time. He is taking the Jimmy Connors and Lleyton Hewitt

:08:14.:08:16.

method which is to try harder than these guys. No matter what, you keep

:08:17.:08:20.

giving more than 100%, and eventually, most of the guys fall in

:08:21.:08:27.

some way, shape or form. A couple of the people that you mention did not,

:08:28.:08:32.

but there were extenuating circumstances. Knee problems, wet or

:08:33.:08:38.

cold conditions, these conditions suit Nadal pretty well, considering

:08:39.:08:58.

it is the first round. I guess the important question is, when you look

:08:59.:09:03.

at how slight he is and how hard he is hitting the ball, how long can he

:09:04.:09:04.

keep this up? He is trying to throw his character

:09:05.:09:31.

onto the other end of the court! And trying to get the crowd on his side

:09:32.:09:37.

and make them realise, I am in a tough match, I need your help, if

:09:38.:09:40.

you want me around in the second week. But we like this guy Klizan

:09:41.:09:47.

that we have never heard of at the moment, would be the crowd's

:09:48.:09:55.

response! We will give them an opinion poll, which of these two

:09:56.:09:58.

players they would like to see in the second week! LAUGHTER

:09:59.:10:01.

. He has been so successful with that

:10:02.:10:26.

risky shot of the high part of the net, the short part of the court,

:10:27.:10:29.

time and again that is where he has scored winners.

:10:30.:10:55.

Forget the crowd, ask Roger Federer if he wants to cede Nadal in the

:10:56.:11:00.

second week! They are in the second half. -- ask him if he wants to see

:11:01.:11:06.

him in the second week. One hour and seven minutes into this match, one

:11:07.:11:11.

set, and no break in the second, a little early to be an upset alert.

:11:12.:11:17.

-- on upset alert. Klizan complaining to Martin Damm,

:11:18.:12:50.

up there in the box, in these conditions, I am slipping and

:12:51.:12:55.

sliding. Just take a look at the school. It's pretty nice for Klizan

:12:56.:13:00.

at the moment. -- just take a look at the score. That would fall into

:13:01.:13:20.

the category, get a grip! The studs on the bottom of the grasscourt

:13:21.:13:23.

tennis shoes. They come out once a year and there are a lot of

:13:24.:13:29.

regulations, not just on the length and the stiffness of the things and

:13:30.:13:39.

how many per square inch. UMPIRE: Mr Klizan is challenging the call. The

:13:40.:13:47.

ball was called out and has been overruled in. End of game. It is on

:13:48.:14:07.

the serve. Interesting match here. SUE BARKER: a fascinating match on

:14:08.:14:11.

Centre Court. We will be right back with it. Let's update you with what

:14:12.:14:17.

is happening elsewhere. On Court three, Heather Watson, the British

:14:18.:14:22.

and one, has taken the first set against Tomljanovic of Croatia.

:14:23.:14:27.

6-3. It is 1-1 in the second set. It's looking good for Heather at the

:14:28.:14:30.

moment. That is live on the red button. And live on BBC1 is this

:14:31.:14:40.

match on Court One, Samantha Murray of Great Britain, a wild card,

:14:41.:14:44.

against the number five seed Maria Sharapova. Semantics going well, she

:14:45.:14:51.

has had points to level it at 2-2. -- Samantha Stosur going well. And

:14:52.:14:57.

Roger Federer has won his match 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, against Paolo Lorenzi,

:14:58.:15:02.

that was earlier on Court One. Back to Centre Court. -- Samantha Murray

:15:03.:15:18.

is going well. Martin Klizan served out the first set because a double

:15:19.:15:22.

fault came out of nowhere for Nadal, Nadal has not looked comfortable but

:15:23.:15:26.

the spirit and willing are there, and if the tennis is flowing, Martin

:15:27.:15:31.

Klizan will get a barrage. But at the moment he is more than holding

:15:32.:15:35.

his own, leading by one set, trailing 3-2 in the second. JOHN

:15:36.:15:54.

MCENROE: You will have to explain to me what that is! He is looking to be

:15:55.:16:00.

nominated for the worst drop shot of the. That is definitely at the top

:16:01.:16:08.

of the list! He is 2-3 on those. Noone no need to look any further.

:16:09.:16:11.

That is a nice way to retaliate. A slice with not a lot of pace,

:16:12.:16:45.

harder to generate your own power. Nadal would be well served to use

:16:46.:16:49.

that shot more often. I suspect he will. That is a great return.

:16:50.:17:14.

This is what he has been waiting for. He often goes back on the

:17:15.:17:25.

second serve. He smothered that one. The reward, two break points.

:17:26.:19:53.

Magnificent stuff! It is. He's like a goalkeeper at the back of the

:19:54.:20:05.

courts, Martin Klizan. This whole game, ever since that drop shot, it

:20:06.:20:12.

seems like Klizan is going uphill. It seems that the backward points

:20:13.:20:13.

are being played on gaffer's scratch There is the breakthrough! And Nadal

:20:14.:20:59.

is finally in the match, forcing himself forward. But also

:21:00.:21:10.

unpredictable, which was helpful there. He stepped back a few times,

:21:11.:21:14.

stepped in just enough to give Klizan something to think about, a

:21:15.:21:19.

magnificent game he just played, unbelievable game to break. That was

:21:20.:21:28.

big-time. That backhand return at 15-30 was illustrative of his

:21:29.:21:32.

willingness to change. The Mac I don't think Klizan will be trying to

:21:33.:21:37.

drop shot any time soon! If you're drop shot can be volleyed by the

:21:38.:21:43.

opponent, it did not work. And this is new ball is now. Back in

:21:44.:21:50.

business. All the twitches and polls. 4-2. -- all the twitches and

:21:51.:22:07.

polls. Nine times out of ten I am not sure that Nadal would want new

:22:08.:22:12.

balls. He likes big fluffy balls with a little more time on this

:22:13.:22:14.

surface. No, sir! Just when he has got his

:22:15.:22:44.

nose in front, errors. He does have some options on his

:22:45.:23:45.

serve. This is where he needs to take advantage of it. Get a little

:23:46.:23:51.

more slice and spin and more pop if he decides to hit a big one at the

:23:52.:24:04.

middle. -- up the middle. He ended it uses the body serve. That came in

:24:05.:24:06.

handy, then. That is a bit cold. Having broken,

:24:07.:25:08.

Rafael Nadal wins the game. We could use a great match to get going. I

:25:09.:25:13.

love it. I don't know if this will be one of those. If Nadal will do

:25:14.:25:21.

what he did at the French Open last, coming back from one set and then

:25:22.:25:25.

easing his way past his opponent, in fourth and fifth gear, but we could

:25:26.:25:30.

use a good match. Did you see Gregor tore Dimitrov yesterday, John? I

:25:31.:25:37.

did. I think is finally ready to make that next step and this is

:25:38.:25:43.

tough stuff to challenge the top four guys. What did you make of

:25:44.:25:49.

Murray yesterday, Peter? I didn't see him but we saw him at Queen's

:25:50.:25:53.

Club and also in Paris, and he seemed to playing well. Federer.

:25:54.:26:00.

Easy win today. Nothing to suggest that we won't see the big names

:26:01.:26:07.

making it through. This guy, Klizan, has put a lot of effort in. Peter,

:26:08.:26:14.

you mention the frail frame, and it looked to me, we are right near him,

:26:15.:26:19.

Martin, at four - two, looked weary. Part of it was mental. Finally Nadal

:26:20.:26:25.

at gotten to him. Part of him was perhaps thinking about this down to

:26:26.:26:33.

drop shot. Can you say hello? Hello, everyone on the Hill. We can't

:26:34.:26:39.

change their name, it is still Tim Henman Hill. And he's got the

:26:40.:26:45.

trophy. Consolation, Tim gets to keep his cell! -- Andy has got the

:26:46.:26:56.

trophy. Tim gets to keep the Hill! Rafael Nadal, in a bit of trouble

:26:57.:27:01.

after losing the first set, but in control in the second set at the

:27:02.:27:02.

moment. I would have thought he could have

:27:03.:28:01.

left that one. It did look like it was going long but you don't have a

:28:02.:28:06.

whole lot of time to decide, that's visual. No! Probably around one

:28:07.:28:12.

second from serve to ball coming back. The hold forced Nadal to serve

:28:13.:28:31.

it out, at the very least, try to grab the lead again.

:28:32.:29:05.

The fact that she has committed and forced in self over the years to

:29:06.:29:12.

step closer on the return, you can see it is starting to pay off --

:29:13.:29:18.

that he has committed and forced himself to step closer on the

:29:19.:29:23.

return. It is like when he changed his serve to play in the U.S. Open.

:29:24.:30:02.

That is the first part of the job done. He has kept himself in with a

:30:03.:30:13.

chance. And now Rafael Nadal will serve for the set.

:30:14.:31:26.

previous shot and volleyed it, he chose to wait. That is two Mrs he

:31:27.:31:34.

would like back. Again love down. Was that a mishit return? I think

:31:35.:32:36.

so, it didn't come out of the middle, did it? It might have gone

:32:37.:32:42.

where he wanted it to go but... He didn't hit it cleanly but that

:32:43.:32:48.

worked out for him. Tried to get it into the body, now he has got to try

:32:49.:32:50.

to break some points and level this No mistakes this time, watched it

:32:51.:33:02.

like a hawk. He made this volley look easy. It

:33:03.:33:20.

most certainly is not. He missed one of those reverse

:33:21.:34:02.

forehands, didn't he? Just measured that one. The footwork was beautiful

:34:03.:34:04.

to watch. Nadal makes it one set all here on

:34:05.:35:03.

Centre Court, one hour and a half of intensity from both players. I

:35:04.:35:07.

wonder if Klizan can survive the inevitable onslaught now over the

:35:08.:35:15.

next ten or 15 minutes. Fortunately we are going to find that out very

:35:16.:35:20.

soon. How much energy did he expend? Peter pointed out that it

:35:21.:35:29.

was not a good sign. He looks whipped right now. He has a long way

:35:30.:35:37.

to go. This is key for Klizan to get back on track, get the lead and not

:35:38.:35:42.

let Nadal take over and start dictating. Easy for me to say in the

:35:43.:35:49.

commentators' booth. Perhaps going for a toilet break will give him a

:35:50.:35:55.

moment to pull himself together. Klizan is not the sort of bloke to

:35:56.:36:01.

buckle. Having started the year just outside of 100, his schedule this

:36:02.:36:06.

year, what price he has paid for these sorts of opportunities and he

:36:07.:36:12.

has been all over the place. He went to Rio, Sao Paulo, Colombia, made

:36:13.:36:17.

the final of that. Qualified in Munich, he beat some tough guys on

:36:18.:36:35.

clay, he won two rounds of the French Open, the quarterfinal at

:36:36.:36:39.

Eastbourne so he has paid the price to get back into the game at this

:36:40.:36:49.

level. We figured out by two -- figured out part of why he is

:36:50.:36:58.

wearing that now! You can hardly be surprised that his wrist became an

:36:59.:37:04.

issue at the end of last year. It is one of the reasons he has had to

:37:05.:37:16.

battle back. He has got that sort of look of Karol Kucera about him. They

:37:17.:37:24.

sort of wonder around and then strike. I like the way he carries

:37:25.:37:36.

himself on court. Look at these stats. SUE BARKER: Fascinating match

:37:37.:37:44.

and we will be back at the start of the third set, but let's show you

:37:45.:37:49.

what has been happening on Court three. Britain's Heather Watson is

:37:50.:37:55.

through. A wonderful when for her. The British fans are delighted with

:37:56.:38:04.

that victory. She will next meet the finalist at Eastbourne or Radwanska.

:38:05.:38:17.

Over on Court 18, Richard Gasquet is through but he had to do it the hard

:38:18.:38:22.

way against James Duckworth of Australia. Gasquet of France through

:38:23.:38:31.

to round two, so that is what has been happening elsewhere. Let's

:38:32.:38:38.

rejoin Centre Court. ANDREW CASTLE: We have only got one

:38:39.:38:45.

player at the moment, sadly. Here he comes, dashing back on court. 28

:38:46.:38:56.

years of age, world number one shortly after he won the greatest

:38:57.:39:03.

match that I ever saw. The Wimbledon final? For me. Me too. He has been

:39:04.:39:11.

part of the greatest clay court match with Novak Djokovic last year

:39:12.:39:16.

in the semifinals, the six-hour match they played in Australia.

:39:17.:39:23.

Probably arguably the greatest match ever played in Australia.

:39:24.:39:29.

Wimbledon... He has just got to work out the Open. He has played some

:39:30.:39:35.

great players there. We hope Rafael Nadal will still be around for

:39:36.:39:40.

another three or four years. I doubt very much whether he will still be

:39:41.:39:45.

playing when he is fed's age, that is five years away. Roger is

:39:46.:39:48.

approaching his 33rd. He has spent more time on the floor

:39:49.:40:06.

than on his feet! He started complaining early in the second set

:40:07.:40:11.

I think. His concentration was thrown a bit then. And he looks like

:40:12.:40:18.

he is down even though the score is tied. He has done a lot of good

:40:19.:40:26.

things, he should start focusing on that.

:40:27.:42:33.

Nadal is getting Klizan to take more chances, go big four more difficult

:42:34.:42:55.

parts of the court. Only half of those have succeeded. The first two

:42:56.:43:03.

have been disastrous. He succeeded with the disguise but forgot to

:43:04.:43:05.

execute. Nadal could taste that. He worked so

:43:06.:43:53.

hard to put himself in a position to break.

:43:54.:44:31.

That has got to be one of the best points you will ever see on this

:44:32.:44:53.

court. Tell the guy to try! He was down and he pirouetted.

:44:54.:45:14.

The ability to fall over and get back up again, this childlike thing,

:45:15.:45:22.

it is a distant memory for most of us. But watching Nadal do that, it

:45:23.:45:33.

is like he has springs or something. Pirouette and up! He knows he is

:45:34.:45:42.

involved in this point, and he loves winning these. Who wouldn't? They

:45:43.:45:49.

should send a tape of this to every junior in the draw to show these

:45:50.:45:53.

kids what it is like to give everything you have got. That was

:45:54.:45:55.

amazing. No wonder. There is hardly a

:45:56.:46:12.

sportsman out there, including footballers like Lionel Messi, they

:46:13.:46:16.

look at this guy and they know he is something special.

:46:17.:46:33.

The ability to change a game in the middle of the match, the change of

:46:34.:49:09.

strategy, is key. Insert one, Nadal had a quarter of balls inside the

:49:10.:49:14.

baseline. Inset two that is a big difference.

:49:15.:49:59.

UMPIRE: The ball was called out. Klizan challenging to no avail.

:50:00.:50:09.

Things are slipping away rather quickly at the moment.

:50:10.:50:24.

UMPIRE: Mr Klizan has two challenges remaining. Is there anyway Klizan

:50:25.:50:34.

can win this match from here? There is a way but it is more difficult

:50:35.:50:36.

than it was 20 minutes ago. It is almost as though the third set

:50:37.:50:55.

is gone. He has to pull himself together and regroup. It certainly

:50:56.:50:58.

will be if he loses this game. And the third set is under the

:50:59.:52:47.

complete control of the world number one, the number two seed, Rafael

:52:48.:52:54.

Nadal. Here I am sitting in the commentary box with McEnroe and

:52:55.:53:00.

Fleming. I used to like watching you two play. We used to like to play

:53:01.:53:09.

together. I loved it. I watched you play at the Olympia once, I loved

:53:10.:53:21.

that. We didn't take them! We just cranked up... That was fun. We knew

:53:22.:53:29.

each other inside out and we fared off each other and I think you can

:53:30.:53:34.

see in this situation why tennis is such a mental game, particularly

:53:35.:53:39.

when it is one on one. This guy battled so hard to get into the head

:53:40.:53:44.

of Klizan and now the guy looks fraught. I want to know what Fleming

:53:45.:53:51.

did to get inside your head. He used to be more vociferous than I was.

:53:52.:53:55.

When we first started playing, I had to calm this guy. No way. God is my

:53:56.:54:04.

witness, this guy was more emotional than I was. Peter, it is time to

:54:05.:54:15.

step up and tell the truth after all these years. For about a year or two

:54:16.:54:26.

he was like that, then he became the calm, mature man that we know. That

:54:27.:54:35.

is enough from you two! Two breaks of serve, Nadal in control.

:54:36.:57:14.

This is surprising, a chance for Klizan to get one of these breaks

:57:15.:57:21.

back. I didn't see this coming. It looked good to me, but my eyes

:57:22.:57:42.

have started to deceive me. Nadal decided to challenge. It looks like

:57:43.:57:43.

a perfectly placed serve. You would have to say that was a

:57:44.:58:26.

shockingly poor game from the two-time Wimbledon champion there.

:58:27.:58:27.

The giveaway gift. Nadal way off the court there. It

:58:28.:59:27.

was a tough shot to execute but he knew that if he hit it right it was

:59:28.:59:37.

a winner. SUE BARKER: We are leaving Centre Court on BBC Two because the

:59:38.:59:43.

match continues right now on BBC1. If you want to continue watching,

:59:44.:59:48.

switch over now to BBC1. Before we bring you more on live tennis on BBC

of the game. That was a result from earlier on court three right now,

:00:12.:00:33.

John is no playing Daniel from Great Britain. Over on court 12, Feliciano

:00:34.:00:41.

Lopez going well today, two tie-break sets, he is in control

there. Gael Monfils is just starting his campaign, possibly looking for

earlier, the former World War I, Caroline Wozniacki, a comfortable

winner today of a Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-3 6-0 commission of phases

Caroline today and she had fun in her press conference after the

:02:34.:02:39.

match. -- a wonderful win for Caroline today. Remit you had a

:02:40.:02:43.

disappointing result at the French after your break-up, did it affect

:02:44.:02:49.

your play? To be honest I feel as if I have answered that question many

:02:50.:02:54.

times and I answered that at the French Open, we are already one

:02:55.:02:58.

month past that, so right now I am feeling good and playing well,

:02:59.:03:02.

excited to be here, playing on the grass, no better place in the world

:03:03.:03:06.

to be these weeks and hopefully I can play another good match

tomorrow. Will you find a new man, any thoughts on that and will you

:03:16.:03:22.

consider Internet dating? I am not that desperate. I will just see what

:03:23.:03:26.

happens. I am fine being single at the moment. It is pretty hard to

:03:27.:03:33.

sweep me off my feet so it would take somebody very special. I guess

were newly sticks backed and it will come. Right now I am just into my

BARKER: Well done, Caroline, well handled. She knew those questions

were coming. It is good to see her back to winning ways. Her match with

:04:00.:04:03.

Naomi Broady will be a nice second-round match. We'll be going

:04:04.:04:09.

to Court Number One to see Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, one of the

:04:10.:04:12.

rising stars, a semifinalist at the Australian Open and the French Open

this year. We can hear from her at her rented Wimbledon home. Ross went

to meet her. Welcome to my home, I have tea and scones for you. Really?

nice. It is my first time in our house, last year I stayed in a

It does not happen to many people. It mixes it up, yesterday I had

breakfast alone so now I have six people to eat with. I have do make

it. Yes, I'm not a very good host! What is your story, in Canada, how

did you become is a passionate about the sport? I was five, I have a twin

sister named Beatrice and our parents but is in these groups once

:06:08.:06:12.

a week in tennis and in the group we would usually play games but I hated

:06:13.:06:16.

it because we only hit tennis balls for ten minutes of the hour and I

:06:17.:06:21.

would say, I want to play more. I want to play tennis more. They

:06:22.:06:25.

realised I wanted to play and kept putting me in, three times a week, I

:06:26.:06:29.

played my first tournament when I was eight. I just kept wanting to

:06:30.:06:36.

play. My twin sister retired at the age of six! We are very different.

:06:37.:06:42.

That is how it happened. This year has been amazing, semifinal in

:06:43.:06:46.

Melbourne and in Paris. You ahead of where you hoped you might be? I

:06:47.:06:52.

don't think so. People tell me I am 20, but that feels old to me and I

are not satisfied and it motivates me to work even harder. I have an

:07:09.:07:12.

ultimate goal of winning a Grand Slam so I am constantly working

:07:13.:07:17.

towards achieving that. How will you go in the next few weeks, you

:07:18.:07:21.

comfortable talking about the possibility that you might win it?

:07:22.:07:27.

It is important to be ready and think about it, my goal is to win a

:07:28.:07:31.

Grand Slam that it is so hard to predict what will happen. Anything

:07:32.:07:35.

can happen. It is impossible to predict results, try not to think

:07:36.:07:41.

about it. I'm going to play on Tuesday, I want to give it my all

:07:42.:07:45.

and enjoy it so much. I am playing at Wimbledon so life is good. SUE

:07:46.:07:51.

BARKER: We are looking forward to seeing her as well. Canada have two

:07:52.:07:55.

great talents in Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic, two players tipped

:07:56.:08:00.

for the top. Fascinating to see how she copes on the grass. She's had a

busy season. Her coach said she was feeling a lot of pain in her knees,

:09:10.:09:12.

over to our commentator, Barry Davies. The two players, quite early

in their warm up. Daniela Hantuchova, now 34, against another

:09:26.:09:32.

13 seed, 20-year-old Eugenie Bouchard. Eugenie Bouchard is from

:09:33.:09:42.

Canada. It is curious. Bouchard, the Young Player of the Year of 2013, a

title last won by a fellow Canadian back in 1983, remember Carling

Hantuchova. She has won six titles. She has reached one Grand Slam

semifinal, and she has made the fourth round ten times. She's had a

:10:37.:10:41.

quarterfinal at Wimbledon, that was in 2002. This is her 14th appearance

:10:42.:11:01.

at the all England Championships. Eugenie Bouchard, aged 20 years and

:11:02.:11:12.

four months. A semifinalist in the two previous Grand Slams this year,

:11:13.:11:21.

2014. Not with the experience but with a great deal of quality of play

:11:22.:11:32.

and determination of mind. Already carrying the label as a future

:11:33.:11:38.

winner of Grand Slams, to come close to two of them at her young age is

:11:39.:11:50.

very, very impressive. There is her coach. A young charge that has to be

:11:51.:12:11.

carefully treated. Hantuchova will know something of how her young

:12:12.:12:17.

opponent feels, she reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last

:12:18.:12:23.

time, she did the same 90 was 19. At that time she might have been

:12:24.:12:27.

thought of as a feature Grand Slam champion but it was not to be, at

:12:28.:12:33.

least, not so far. -- a future random slam champion. She's got an

:12:34.:12:35.

extraordinary record in Mixed Doubles. She has her own Grand Slam

:12:36.:12:41.

of those events and with four different partners. The final serves

:12:42.:12:55.

before the start of the match. And there'd is bound to be at least one

:12:56.:12:59.

serve after the umpire, Fiona Edwards of Great Britain, calls

:13:00.:13:04.

time. Usually the players like to sneak in one last go. Quite a few

:13:05.:13:23.

people have gone for a break after the previous matches. One of them

:13:24.:13:34.

lasted for only four points, the conclusion of the previous contest

:13:35.:13:37.

which saw Jo-Wilfried Tsonga coming through to the second round of the

:13:38.:13:39.

championship. I always think it is a sign of

:13:40.:14:18.

confidence. Thinking about the player's own game, not the opponent.

:14:19.:14:21.

Some like to give the other one a chance, having won the toss, giving

:14:22.:14:27.

the opponent the chance to serve might create an early opportunity

:14:28.:14:31.

for a break, but not a bit of it for Eugenie Bouchard. She intends to

:14:32.:14:39.

serve from the start, like every other player on the circuit now.

:14:40.:14:51.

Hits the ball from -- very hard. He looks capable of hitting the ball

:14:52.:14:55.

pretty hard, too! But rather a different figure! The Maple Leaf

:14:56.:15:03.

flag shows support for Canada. She won the singles title here, it was a

:15:04.:15:10.

unique Canadian double because the men's title went to a fellow

:15:11.:15:18.

Canadian. And in the men's competition since, he has not been

:15:19.:15:28.

able to take the path that Eugenie Bouchard has taken. Eugenie first

:15:29.:15:52.

out. Hantuchova has had her moments and she is hoping that this will be

:15:53.:15:56.

an addition to those moments. The 20 old to open the match. -- the

:15:57.:16:02.

20-year-old to open the match. The Canadian is giving something of

:16:03.:16:26.

a gift to start by her opponent - she has been given something of a

:16:27.:17:24.

gift to start. A slightly late call. That is what made it successful.

:17:25.:17:58.

I am joined by the former British number one, Anne Keothavong.

:17:59.:18:33.

That is a pity. Set up the opportunity. Couldn't take it. A

:18:34.:18:46.

quiet opening to a promising contest. ANNE KEOTHAVONG: Yes, it is

:18:47.:18:56.

an intriguing matchup, Hantuchova with so much experience, she has

:18:57.:19:01.

been higher up in the rankings against the young pretender, Eugenie

:19:02.:19:04.

Bouchard showing so much promise this year. One of the WTA's rising

:19:05.:19:10.

stars. With her coach, Nick Saviano. I love it when players do that

:19:11.:20:01.

because some others do it all the time! That is the third time running

:20:02.:20:17.

that she has missed the line that she was looking for.

:20:18.:21:25.

It is so important that and teach over does not over -press in this

:21:26.:21:35.

match. -- it is so important that Daniela Hantuchova does not

:21:36.:21:40.

over-press. Over the years she has tended to do that, driven by rather

:21:41.:21:45.

a nervous disposition, particularly at the start of each match. Perhaps

:21:46.:21:55.

too eager, the Canadian. Hantuchova just and so much pressure

:21:56.:23:09.

from the Bouchard ground strokes. -- and so much pressure. Bouchard not

:23:10.:23:14.

moving an inch of that baseline, ready to take the ball on as early

:23:15.:23:16.

as possible. Good for Daniela Hantuchova, and

:23:17.:25:10.

good for the match. Yes, it always feels good to get onto the school

:25:11.:25:13.

board at the start, helps to settle any nerves. -- get onto the school

:25:14.:25:41.

board. -- get onto the score board. So sweet from Hantuchova! She is

:25:42.:25:53.

very quick to cut off the angle on the volley, showing the feel that

:25:54.:26:21.

she possesses. Good attacking play by frantic over again. -- by

:26:22.:26:28.

Hantuchova again. She was right onto that forehand. More pensive now.

:26:29.:27:06.

Break points against her. Hired a chance to draw some early

:27:07.:28:12.

conclusions? Daniela Hantuchova, such an experienced player, enjoys

:28:13.:28:17.

playing on grass. Really feels comfortable moving out here. A

:28:18.:28:21.

player with a lot of variety. Not afraid to move forwards. She stands

:28:22.:28:34.

in fourth place in the number of wins achieved in grasscourt matches,

:28:35.:28:44.

as you say, she likes it, but the Canadian flag will certainly be

:28:45.:28:53.

waving during the contest. I think it is an intriguing opening between

:28:54.:28:57.

the experienced player and the gang player. But the young player that

:28:58.:29:01.

has already been into Grand Slam them a fan of this year, losing to

:29:02.:29:07.

the champion on each occasion. Quite incredible. And it was only two

:29:08.:29:11.

years ago that she won the Girls' Singles title at Wimbledon. She

:29:12.:29:16.

really has progressed through the ranks incredibly quickly. And she is

:29:17.:29:19.

a fun player to watch, Eugenie Bouchard. I love the way she looks

:29:20.:29:24.

to take the ball early, I love her attitude on the court. And the fact

:29:25.:29:38.

that she is absolutely fearless. She has been given an early test here.

:29:39.:29:46.

Daniela Hantuchova, 2-1, with the early break.

:29:47.:32:11.

It is just coming back too quickly at the moment. Hantuchova really

:32:12.:32:49.

getting a good read of Bouchard's second serve. She is there, early

:32:50.:32:52.

preparation. Just as I was complimenting Daniela

:32:53.:33:51.

Hantuchova, she misses two in a row. Welcome to the club!

:33:52.:34:16.

She took full advantage of those two errors. And she will feel a little

:34:17.:34:25.

better for that fact. Quite a lot of available space that

:34:26.:34:45.

she put the ball into there. Bouchard is a player who is always

:34:46.:34:51.

looking to take time away from her opponents. Across all services, hard

:34:52.:34:56.

court, clay court, grass court, it is the same type of aggressive game

:34:57.:35:06.

she is trying to play. It will be interesting how this match

:35:07.:35:10.

progresses for her, and should she win today, how she progresses in the

:35:11.:35:14.

tournament because there is so much more expected of her now, having

:35:15.:35:20.

made two semifinals at the Australian Open, the French Open.

:35:21.:35:29.

It is always interesting for me to see how young player deals with the

:35:30.:35:39.

expectations and the pressure. To those who much is given, much is

:35:40.:35:41.

required. Look how far forward she was to

:35:42.:36:01.

receive the first serve there. Shot off the line, always makes it

:36:02.:36:38.

difficult for players. Pushing the window open a bit.

:36:39.:37:03.

If you don't get the serve in exactly the right place, that is

:37:04.:37:07.

what is coming back at you. Excellent game for the Canadian.

:37:08.:37:31.

Aggressive from the first point. Pushed it far too far! Again,

:37:32.:38:50.

Hantuchova showing us the feel she has and Bouchard did a good job to

:38:51.:38:56.

get to it. No control once she got there. Six straight points against

:38:57.:39:01.

the server. Not a well disguised drop shot from

:39:02.:39:26.

Bouchard, Hantuchova up there with plenty of time.

:39:27.:40:01.

That is the beauty of sport, it surprises you so often. Who would

:40:02.:40:09.

have said there would be eight consecutive points against the

:40:10.:40:13.

server? Both players here are very strong returners. Hantuchova is

:40:14.:40:26.

really one of the best professionals out there in the women's game.

:40:27.:40:32.

Watching her prepare for her practice, training sessions,

:40:33.:40:36.

matches, she is always so meticulous with how she goes about everything

:40:37.:40:40.

and she is still going strong at the age of 31. Still keen to push on.

:40:41.:40:49.

Plenty of girls playing into their 30s today.

:40:50.:42:21.

First challenge of the match. And the player wins. Back to the first

:42:22.:42:35.

serve. Will she be right again? She is!

:42:36.:43:59.

Only just! UMPIRE: First serve, 30-0. Just adds a bit to the

:44:00.:44:08.

confidence, that is the way she is playing, certainly justifying it.

:44:09.:44:33.

Just a little too flat on that forehand, Hantuchova.

:44:34.:46:19.

An eventful game. Two successful challenges, one double fault. Game

:46:20.:46:31.

two Hantuchova, 3-5. So, the first place but now comes

:46:32.:48:22.

the problem - she has to break. Yes! The expectation, the pressure

:48:23.:48:28.

now on Hantuchova to serve out this opening set. She has been playing

:48:29.:48:34.

better tennis so far. Looking to take time away from Bouchard,

:48:35.:48:39.

rushing her on that forehand side, doing everything that Bouchard wants

:48:40.:48:42.

to do out here better. Fluffy clouds in the cluster, but

:48:43.:49:07.

who is hanging on a breeze? A little clap there from the coach,

:49:08.:49:35.

with the message don't miss the chance!

:49:36.:49:51.

She is nothing if not determined. A quality that Hantuchova has to

:49:52.:50:36.

match. That wasn't a bad approach from

:50:37.:51:06.

Hantuchova but Bouchard not moving back at all from the baseline,

:51:07.:51:11.

cutting off the angle. Three break points, square at 5-5.

:51:12.:51:56.

Excellent adjustment from Hantuchova, gave herself the room,

:51:57.:52:01.

the space to play this forehand. Well played from the Canadian. The

:52:02.:53:58.

crowd have warmed to it now. They were a bit quiet at the beginning.

:53:59.:54:01.

Now what? It is obvious which side Hantuchova

:54:02.:55:16.

really wants to attack in this match, trying to rush Bouchard on

:55:17.:55:19.

that forehand side. Oh, I say! How about this from

:55:20.:56:25.

Hantuchova. Great anticipation, holding her ground and keeping that

:56:26.:56:34.

backhand so compact. Break point again.

:56:35.:57:52.

So the Canadian back in the driving seat. Yes, she really kept her

:57:53.:58:00.

composure there. Tight moments in the match. Doing what she does best,

:58:01.:58:14.

holding her ground. Not backing off. Persevering with her game plan. I

:58:15.:58:22.

think what makes her stand out so different as well from a lot of the

:58:23.:58:27.

up and coming players is her attitude and her composure on the

:58:28.:58:31.

court. She doesn't allow herself to get too flustered, always projects

:58:32.:58:40.

are very cool, calm exterior. She has very positive body language. She

:58:41.:58:48.

is one of a family of four children, two sisters, one her twin. Sometimes

:58:49.:58:58.

bigger families make you learn to defend and fight your corner a

:58:59.:59:10.

little more. Eugenie, and her twin Beatrice, named after the royal

:59:11.:59:12.

daughters. excellent change from Hantuchova,

:59:13.:00:31.

very well disguised, took her racket back as if she was going to play a

:00:32.:00:35.

backhand and changed it at the last possible moment.

:00:36.:01:46.

Arguably the best forehand she has hit in the set and it has brought

:01:47.:01:50.

her a set point. UMPIRE: The call is being

:01:51.:02:19.

challenged. The call was out. She has been successful tries, she needs

:02:20.:02:23.

to succeed this time as well. -- twice. And she is not. And the set

:02:24.:02:41.

has gone. The coach and the player will be slightly kicking themselves

:02:42.:02:47.

because Hantuchova played the best two shots of the set, the backhand

:02:48.:02:52.

and a crosscourt shot and then the late drop shot but she has lost a

:02:53.:02:57.

bit unity. She had her chances, served the set at 5-4, just could

:02:58.:03:07.

not get it. The disbelief on Hantuchova's phase when a Hawk-eye

:03:08.:03:11.

showed that that shot was out. Even I thought it caught the line as

:03:12.:03:23.

well. Doing what she does at the sit down, Hantuchova always has her eyes

:03:24.:03:29.

closed, visualising. That is what she wants to do in the next game. A

:03:30.:03:39.

high percentage of first serves from Dani Aranzubia over but could not

:03:40.:03:43.

convert 20 got herself into play. Bouchard would like to do better

:03:44.:03:50.

behind her second service -- a high percentage of first serves from

:03:51.:03:54.

Hantuchova but she could not convert them when she got herself into play.

:03:55.:03:58.

Only five unforced errors from Bouchard, quite surprising. Bouchard

:03:59.:04:13.

really mixing it up. I feel she could use the bodies of more in this

:04:14.:04:22.

match. Hantuchova peppering the serve out her, choosing to go out

:04:23.:04:30.

wide on the deuce side. That peppering it at her. Kept a very

:04:31.:05:36.

low. That was strange. You can get that sometimes on grass,

:05:37.:05:42.

particularly when it hits the line. They should of the line at times.

:05:43.:06:34.

Oh! I do not think it is serious but it was an unpleasant moment for her.

:06:35.:06:45.

Average! She did not actually turn it, fortunately. Either ankle. --

:06:46.:06:49.

Welch. A well played forehand from

:06:50.:07:27.

Bouchard, almost played it like a half-volley. Absorbing all the plays

:07:28.:07:40.

from Hantuchova. -- all the pace. UMPIRE: The call is being

:07:41.:07:58.

challenged, the ball was called out. Deuce Ms Bouchard has two challenges

:07:59.:07:59.

remaining. That was certainly meant. That is a

:08:00.:09:44.

bit wild! Bouchard slightly escaping a difficult game. She did. Got

:09:45.:09:52.

herself out of trouble. Again really holding her ground after that serve

:09:53.:09:59.

for the next shot. Just determined not to Berdych behind that baseline.

:10:00.:10:13.

-- determined not to Berdych move. It will be interesting to see if

:10:14.:10:17.

Hantuchova continues with her game plan, peppering of the Bouchard

:10:18.:10:22.

forehand, whether she will mix it up a little more on the serve.

:10:23.:10:48.

That is wild. Difficult for the spectators. The shadows are growing.

:10:49.:11:21.

Amp iMac Ms Bouchard is challenging the call on the centreline. The ball

:11:22.:11:23.

was called good. Ms Bouchard has one challenge

:11:24.:11:48.

remaining. The ball was good. The first days of the match for Daniela

:11:49.:11:57.

Hantuchova. -- the first days of the match. She used her challenges early

:11:58.:12:10.

in this second set, Bouchard. She is starting to read Hantuchova's serve

:12:11.:13:06.

now. Not that time. It is a shot that has been effective for her in

:13:07.:13:12.

this match. Just over playing at that time. -- just over playing it

:13:13.:13:21.

that time. Bouchard now with a chance.

:13:22.:13:48.

Smart play from Hantuchova. Back behind her opponent. Bouchard

:13:49.:14:02.

looking to cover this basis. That was well watched from Hantuchova.

:14:03.:14:17.

Hantuchova persevering with hers serves to the Bouchard forehand.

:14:18.:14:26.

Being rewarded. -- with her serves. The opening games of the second set

:14:27.:14:33.

going to deuce. We have had a total of three from two games in the first

:14:34.:14:49.

set. And both servers had to battle. She might slip, Bouchard. Very

:14:50.:14:54.

square on. That is smart from Hantuchova. Held

:14:55.:16:17.

on to the forehand, changing the direction of play at the last

:16:18.:16:18.

possible moment. More buzz in the crowd, some people

:16:19.:17:24.

have returned to their seats, having taken a long tea break and missed a

:17:25.:17:31.

good set. Their last! Absolutely. We did expect some rain this afternoon

:17:32.:17:40.

that it has held off. -- their loss. Only one person that I think of when

:17:41.:17:44.

I see a player closing their eyes, Arthur Ashe. A long time back. Sadly

:17:45.:17:52.

no longer with us. Time for a look at the weather I never got an

:17:53.:17:56.

opportunity to see him play. An interesting character. Ask Jimmy

:17:57.:18:02.

Connors committee will tell about him! -- ask Jimmy Connors, he will

:18:03.:18:19.

tell you about him. So she has to come from behind in this set and

:18:20.:18:25.

indeed in the match. Needs to find her best and make it consistent.

:18:26.:18:39.

Solid volley. Not an area of the court that Daniela Hantuchova is

:18:40.:18:53.

afraid of. A very experienced player, has played a lot of doubles

:18:54.:18:54.

in her time. Crisp, clean volley. Hantuchova becoming a little too

:18:55.:20:08.

predictable about her serve this direction. -- about her service

:20:09.:20:14.

direction. New balls, new racket. You see that

:20:15.:20:53.

pretty much with all the players these days, as soon as the new micro

:20:54.:20:59.

balloons -- balls come out, they go to change their racket, they go for

:21:00.:21:02.

something a little tighter. Oh! This is where Bouchard is so

:21:03.:21:45.

dangerous when she has the time, winding up for that forehand.

:21:46.:21:46.

Excellent footwork. Yes! Excellent return from Hantuchova,

:21:47.:22:45.

hard, deep, straight down the middle, jamming Bouchard.

:22:46.:23:11.

Again, getting Bouchard with the depth on that return of serve.

:23:12.:23:30.

Second serve, break point. That is not her favourite line, that one!

:23:31.:23:46.

No! The fourth case -- gaze from

:23:47.:24:36.

Bouchard. -- her fourth ace. Oh! Hantuchova very quick onto that.

:24:37.:25:07.

SUE BARKER: At this point we will leave this match. Continue watching

:25:08.:25:14.

on the red button if you wish. We will bring you the Serena Williams

:25:15.:25:17.

match on Centre Court in a moment, but a short time ago on Centre Court

:25:18.:25:23.

Rafael Nadal won his match in four sets. It was a tight encounter

:25:24.:25:26.

against Martin Klizan of Slovenia who took the opening set, against

:25:27.:25:31.

the world number one, but like all great champions Rafa and deep and

:25:32.:25:37.

came through in four. Next he meets Lukas Rosol, who beat him in the

:25:38.:25:41.

second-round two years ago in five thrilling sets so it's a really

:25:42.:25:44.

tough draw for an adult that he is through and it was a glorious match

:25:45.:25:49.

the crowd on Centre Court. - it is a really tough draw for Nadal. That

:25:50.:25:54.

was a short time ago. And now the world and the one in the ladies game

:25:55.:25:58.

is just beginning her match against Anna Tatishvili of the USA. It is a

:25:59.:26:03.

close opening game so we will join them with our commentators, Lindsay

:26:04.:26:17.

Davenport and David Mercer. DAVID MERCER: Serena has had to save

:26:18.:26:26.

several break points already, and now a double fault. So an opening

:26:27.:26:31.

game that has already lasted eight minutes and we are back to deuce for

:26:32.:26:33.

the sixth time. She doesn't hold back, does she?

:26:34.:27:01.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: She has come out with a game plan, to attack all her

:27:02.:27:05.

shots. Hitting them very hard and flat but not with a of margin. --

:27:06.:27:11.

not with a big margin. That credit to Anna Tatishvili, who

:27:12.:27:30.

has come out here not with a lot of confidence, but she has come out

:27:31.:27:54.

here looking like she believes. A good left-handed forehand from

:27:55.:28:00.

Tatishvili. It is not often that you see Serena with the fist pumps in

:28:01.:28:04.

just the first game, trying to get herself going, trying to get some

:28:05.:28:28.

energy flowing. A ten minute opening game, nobody predicted that!

:28:29.:28:36.

Especially on Serena's serve! Always a challenge to try to break her and

:28:37.:28:41.

her great serve on grass. Tatishvili game close. -- she came close.

:28:42.:28:59.

The first serve will be key for Tatishvili. She needs a high

:29:00.:29:05.

percentage of first serves. It is not a strength of her game so if

:29:06.:29:10.

Serena sees too many second serves she will be aggressive and start a

:29:11.:29:18.

point on her own terms. -- start the point.

:29:19.:29:28.

There is Anna Tatishvili's father, Dmitri, taking copious notes.

:29:29.:29:51.

guiding Serena's career over the last few years. They certainly worth

:29:52.:30:47.

an item at one time but now the relationship is just good friends.

:30:48.:31:16.

That was a bit too low to attempt that shop. Scrambling from Serena

:31:17.:31:24.

who slipped early in her rally but was able to get her balance back.

:31:25.:31:31.

That wall was way too low to hit a drive with any spin. Very difficult

:31:32.:31:35.

to get those over the net if you don't hit up on it. For so long,

:31:36.:31:47.

Serena was solely coached by her mother and father, and getting that

:31:48.:31:52.

new voice in her area a few years ago from Patrick certainly helped,

:31:53.:31:58.

got her motivated and focused on getting to number one in the world,

:31:59.:32:00.

winning more Grand Slams. We don't want any injuries, we had a

:32:01.:32:25.

lot early on in the Championships last year. No damage done, apart

:32:26.:32:38.

from pride. Very nearly went right over on the left ankle, did well to

:32:39.:32:45.

recover. That is two slips in this game, that might cause her to move

:32:46.:32:48.

more tentatively now. Tennis is a cruel game. Tatishvili

:32:49.:34:00.

has played well for 15 minutes, she has had gained points, a total of

:34:01.:34:08.

five, and yet the Scot says 2-0. She has had her chances early, and a lot

:34:09.:34:14.

of times if you don't take those chances early it gets even more

:34:15.:34:15.

difficult. Serena letting out some frustration

:34:16.:34:44.

with this one. Tatishvili so far has been able to push her back over that

:34:45.:34:51.

baseline. Serena is trying to reassert her dominance from that

:34:52.:34:52.

position. Serena Williams had an incredible

:34:53.:35:10.

year last year, 11 titles won. 78 matches won, four lost. Just three

:35:11.:35:17.

titles won so far this year. Her big sister has got the faster

:35:18.:35:33.

serve but I have to say I think Serena's has the better service

:35:34.:35:39.

motion. Absolutely, Serena with her perfect toss and simple motion, very

:35:40.:35:40.

little can go wrong. Again, Tatishvili going after her

:35:41.:36:53.

return. Followed it forward. Serena is not accustomed to opponents

:36:54.:36:55.

attacking her serve. Five aces already from Serena

:36:56.:37:19.

Williams and she has withstood a very powerful opening assault from

:37:20.:37:24.

Tatishvili, and with studied very well. Yes, able to get to this first

:37:25.:37:31.

sit down, still hasn't lost a game, and Tatishvili has played some of

:37:32.:37:35.

her best tennis and has nothing to show for it. This has made Serena

:37:36.:37:41.

moves focus from the very first point and she is all business out

:37:42.:37:46.

here. You can see how much winning here and getting another Grand Slam

:37:47.:37:50.

title under her belt means to her. Quite rightly she judges herself by

:37:51.:37:57.

the highest of standards, and to be halfway through a year, many of

:37:58.:38:06.

which thought she had a shot at the Grand Slams, holding all four majors

:38:07.:38:11.

at the same time, but we old-fashioned types say there is

:38:12.:38:15.

only one Grand Slam you have to win. That is going to be difficult

:38:16.:38:23.

to do, but Serena has not been to a quarterfinal of a Grand Slam yet

:38:24.:38:27.

this year. She had a shock second-round defeat in Paris, and

:38:28.:38:36.

that doesn't make her very happy. If you are wondering what happened to

:38:37.:38:41.

the young Spaniard who beat her in Paris, she lost in the first round

:38:42.:38:43.

yesterday to a young American. Always this hiatus after the first

:38:44.:39:01.

three games because they let people in, people have nipped out to get

:39:02.:39:04.

some refreshment. I really hope that Tatishvili

:39:05.:40:17.

converts these game points because she deserves to be on the

:40:18.:40:19.

scoreboard. There are some coaches who write

:40:20.:40:46.

down things all the time. You wonder... It has to be a nervous

:40:47.:40:52.

habit, right? I'm not sure what you could possibly write down about that

:40:53.:40:58.

point. Played perfectly by his daughter. Held serve to love.

:40:59.:41:18.

Do you remember Jankovic's mother a few years ago, she took a sip of

:41:19.:41:31.

water after every point that her daughter won. Did she take many

:41:32.:41:36.

toilet breaks? Several! I think he is writing the pistol to

:41:37.:42:00.

the Wimbledon committee. Second double fault from Williams.

:42:01.:42:38.

That is so good! Serena had time with this backhand. Tatishvili has

:42:39.:42:51.

done a good job so far with her pace and depth, but that is one of the

:42:52.:42:57.

first time is Serena has had time to settle for one of her ground

:42:58.:42:58.

strokes. -- to set up. Serena thought about challenging

:42:59.:43:43.

because she was almost walking to the chair, thinking she would serve

:43:44.:43:51.

the ace. How about that for dismissing a Serena Williams serve!

:43:52.:44:01.

Tatishvili again going forward to make contact well inside the

:44:02.:44:05.

baseline, cutting off the angle beautifully there.

:44:06.:44:25.

For someone who has really been struggling, she has had some success

:44:26.:44:36.

on the secondary circuit this year. She won on Daytona Beach, more

:44:37.:44:42.

motorsport than tennis, but she has come out here with a very positive

:44:43.:44:48.

attitude, hasn't she? Absolutely, she has come out here wanting to

:44:49.:44:53.

make things happen. So often the other players are so in awe of

:44:54.:44:58.

Serena that they are passive. You have got to give credit to

:44:59.:45:02.

Tatishvili for playing her style of game, which is so tough to do

:45:03.:45:08.

against Serena with her power. So far Serena has been able to handle

:45:09.:45:16.

it, but she has made a couple of scary moments for Serena.

:45:17.:45:35.

After the match, Lindsay! You've got it. I'm more of a Pimms girl

:45:36.:45:43.

though! That is the best return we have seen

:45:44.:47:00.

from Serena so far. Always takes a few games to get your timing down in

:47:01.:47:06.

a grass court match. Serena didn't play any tournaments coming in.

:47:07.:47:10.

Seems to be finding her groove now. A very impressive game indeed from

:47:11.:47:34.

Serena Williams. Now we can have a little look at Hawk-eye. The service

:47:35.:47:41.

direction concentrating very much on the T. Absolutely but still mixes

:47:42.:47:51.

her locations, and that is what makes her serve so difficult to

:47:52.:47:56.

defend against. She uses the same toss but yet is willing to mix up

:47:57.:48:01.

her location even on the big points. Six aces now.

:48:02.:48:32.

Serena Williams is flowing now, feeling more confident with her

:48:33.:49:08.

ground strokes and now the serve finding its mark. Three set points

:49:09.:49:10.

after exactly half an hour. SUE BARKER: After that marathon

:49:11.:49:40.

first game it has been all Serena Williams. Some results to bring you.

:49:41.:49:47.

Out on Court three, where John Isner has gone out in straight sets

:49:48.:49:53.

against Daniel Smethurst. He has been coming here to get inspired

:49:54.:49:58.

since the age of seven, always dreaming of playing here and it is

:49:59.:50:06.

his first wild card here. It is a loss for him but no disgrace against

:50:07.:50:21.

John Isner. And Monfils threw in straight sets, one of the great

:50:22.:50:36.

entertainers. And on Court One, Bouchard took the first set 7-5, but

:50:37.:50:42.

it is five - five against Hantuchova on Court One. This match is on the

:50:43.:51:02.

red button, but here on two we RE joining the Centre Court.

:51:03.:51:08.

COMMENTATOR: Where Serena Williams finished off that set in style,

:51:09.:51:17.

winning the last nine points. Doing a little bit of gardening!

:51:18.:51:23.

Tatishvili is serving at the start of the second.

:51:24.:51:41.

So important for Tatishvili to get off to a better start in the second

:51:42.:51:49.

set. Serena Williams definitely elevated her game after the first

:51:50.:51:54.

three or four in that first set. You have to try to slow her down now, if

:51:55.:51:57.

you can. Anything a little short on the

:51:58.:52:43.

second serve will be heavily punished by Serena.

:52:44.:53:22.

That is well played. Serena very careful here when she went wide for

:53:23.:53:36.

that forehand not to slip. After a couple of falls out on this slick

:53:37.:53:41.

grass court, she has been a bit more careful. Just asking the umpire for

:53:42.:53:51.

confirmation of the call. That is the type of tennis right

:53:52.:54:09.

there that Serena is so successful on the grass with. The big return,

:54:10.:54:15.

setting herself up for an easy shot.

:54:16.:54:29.

She slipped and got stuck and couldn't move!

:54:30.:54:44.

Her right foot was just anchored, she couldn't move it. She is such an

:54:45.:54:55.

explosive mover and she pushes off so hard on her feet. She has had a

:54:56.:55:01.

bit of a scare from sliding out so many times, and now she is trying to

:55:02.:55:10.

be more precise it is not as natural for her. Nothing like an old Panama

:55:11.:55:18.

hat, is there? Very elegant. Just composing herself a little.

:55:19.:55:32.

She moved very tentatively to that return.

:55:33.:56:04.

We have our first Hawk-eye challenge. Alison Hughes from

:56:05.:56:15.

Newcastle in the chair. Good challenge. So that goes down as an

:56:16.:56:25.

ace, her ninth already. It is actually one of the few times

:56:26.:57:27.

we have Serena at the net so far. She hasn't ventured her way forward

:57:28.:57:33.

too often yet and a lot of that is due to Tatishvili and the style of

:57:34.:57:39.

play, her hard, flat ground strokes, but that is the place Serena wants

:57:40.:57:42.

to be, especially here at Wimbledon. The aces count reaches ten, and the

:57:43.:58:01.

score reaches 1-1. She didn't move out of that

:58:02.:58:36.

backhand, Serena, just reached for it.

:58:37.:59:03.

There are times when you think she is a bit optimistic, going for a

:59:04.:59:13.

big, flat shot off that return. A case for saying, OK, let's get back

:59:14.:59:17.

into the rally and then I can give it a good whack.

:59:18.:59:25.

That is a nice forehand there, but definitely Tatishvili would benefit

:59:26.:59:33.

from learning a little bit of top-spin. Get a little bit more

:59:34.:59:38.

margin on her shots, especially when she is pulled wide, not in position.

:59:39.:00:21.

all thought that this had 6-1, 6-1 written all over it, in less than an

:00:22.:00:28.

hour but she is doing far than that. -- credit to Anna Tatishvili because

:00:29.:00:37.

we all thought that. Serena Williams definitely has a game phased on,

:00:38.:00:43.

very focused. Have you been on the London eye yet? I could not do that.

:00:44.:00:49.

It is safe. I have no head for heights at all, but you are inside

:00:50.:00:53.

one of those capsules. In an aeroplane, I can look out of the

:00:54.:00:58.

window. It is when I am on a cliff, or something like that. A good crowd

:00:59.:01:08.

still upon the hill? It is still going to be Tim Henman Hill? I have

:01:09.:01:16.

heard some people say the Murray Mount. Tim is paying me to say that!

:01:17.:01:24.

I thought maybe a Wimbledon title for Andy Murray might change things!

:01:25.:01:39.

UMPIRE: Quiet please, ladies and gentlemen, the players are ready.

:01:40.:01:40.

Quiet please. Thank you. Oh! There are no half measures in

:01:41.:02:39.

this match! Look at that. Aggressive shots. Serena more tentative on her

:02:40.:02:51.

backhand so far come it using that as a setup shot, willing to pull the

:02:52.:03:03.

trigger, more so with her forehand. Good movement by the centres service

:03:04.:03:19.

judge. Oh! Wasn't there a song about slip-sliding away? This court is

:03:20.:03:25.

still slippery. Did you get out of the way? It might have gotten that

:03:26.:03:32.

line judge. You feel more comfortable here on the fifth day,

:03:33.:03:36.

and that is when it starts to harden a bit.

:03:37.:03:47.

Love game for Serena Williams as she draws level. People will ask why the

:03:48.:03:57.

players would feel more comfortable, is it because the green

:03:58.:04:02.

has been worn off? Yes, as the tournament goes on you will see more

:04:03.:04:06.

brown patches and they are easier to move on. Excellent timing. You will

:04:07.:04:19.

see the players are more tentative in the doubles alleys, where it is

:04:20.:04:21.

still green and lush. We used to see it getting very one

:04:22.:04:58.

right at the T of the service box. That is no longer the case. The

:04:59.:05:03.

players playing entirely on all behind the baseline. -- on all

:05:04.:05:09.

behind the baseline. In the days when we did not have a

:05:10.:05:19.

roof over the Centre Court we had all those replays of the old

:05:20.:05:23.

matches, of John McEnroe against Bjorn Borg, and so on, that area of

:05:24.:05:28.

the court, around the T was one, now it is pristine, even in the second

:05:29.:05:30.

week. -- it used to be worn. Creating the angle that time rather

:05:31.:06:37.

than relying on the power and this is the first break point of the

:06:38.:06:39.

second set. Well done! Good playing from

:06:40.:07:22.

Tatishvili to save break point. Serena being a little tentative,

:07:23.:07:26.

missed timing the backhand, and Tatishvili immediately pounced. --

:07:27.:07:35.

Serena did not time her backhand properly, and Tatishvili immediately

:07:36.:07:35.

pounced. She has done a lot of her training

:07:36.:08:03.

at the Chris Evatt Academy, has Tatishvili. -- Chris Evatt.

:08:04.:08:49.

3-2 as Serena gets the first break of the second set. Hiding away there

:08:50.:09:04.

is Chris herself, looking very floral. She is calling the match for

:09:05.:09:11.

American TV. I think she would have some great insights into Tatishvili,

:09:12.:09:16.

who practices out her academy. Chris has a hand in a lot of up and coming

:09:17.:09:20.

professionals now. Heather Watson beat one of her pupils earlier

:09:21.:09:31.

today. No problems! That was a tough draw for her. It is lovely to see

:09:32.:09:35.

Heather back to form and fitness after a tough year last year.

:09:36.:09:41.

Unfortunately Laura Robson has had a tough year with injury and hopefully

:09:42.:09:44.

we can get them both back healthy and 2015. That would be nice. What a

:09:45.:09:50.

lovely way to spend an English summer's evening, sitting on the

:09:51.:09:54.

Hill, watching on the giant screen, or walking around the courts, plenty

:09:55.:09:58.

of action going on all over the place. And this famous old lady with

:09:59.:10:18.

her new top, the roof. News at ten? There is Trevor McDonald. What a

:10:19.:10:21.

great newscaster he was. And a lovely gentleman.

:10:22.:11:00.

In the opening game Tatishvili had four break points but was not able

:11:01.:11:05.

to convert any and has not seen a break point since. She hasn't seen

:11:06.:11:17.

much of the ball! It is just whistling past! That is what happens

:11:18.:11:21.

with Serena when she gets calm and focused and confident it becomes

:11:22.:11:24.

more and more difficult to even make a return.

:11:25.:11:55.

Fabulous serving. You will notice 53 minutes on the clock. That is the

:11:56.:12:14.

length of the match. You whispered that this was your prediction! I

:12:15.:12:21.

can't believe it! I am sneaky, I'm entitled to be in my old age! That

:12:22.:12:26.

was the time I thought Serena would take to win the match but with those

:12:27.:12:30.

first three games of the match, Tatishvili has delayed that.

:12:31.:12:41.

And good for her that she has. Because most of we pundits who

:12:42.:12:48.

pretend we know something about this game thought this would not last an

:12:49.:12:52.

hour. She has two last six more minutes but might be able to do it!

:12:53.:13:00.

-- she has to last six more minutes. She might do it particularly if she

:13:01.:13:03.

gets a few unforced errors to help her on her way. She hasn't won a

:13:04.:13:11.

main draw much and is last summer, and now she's coming out to Centre

:13:12.:13:15.

Court to face Serena Williams. She has not won a main draw match since

:13:16.:13:27.

last summer. Would she be able to fake confidence, as we said, she had

:13:28.:13:32.

those few chances early in the match, those slipped away but she

:13:33.:13:33.

has competed well. And there is no question that Serena

:13:34.:13:53.

has got much better as this match has progressed. Wasn't hitting

:13:54.:13:58.

through the court nearly as well early on but has now gotten more

:13:59.:14:04.

confident of the ground. -- off the ground.

:14:05.:15:01.

Chest when Serena seemed to be producing some fine form. -- chest

:15:02.:15:09.

when she seemed to be brewed using fine form, a couple of break points

:15:10.:15:13.

slip away with a couple of unforced errors.

:15:14.:15:51.

Great hitting from Serena there. As soon as she has got used to the pace

:15:52.:16:01.

of Tatishvili she has been able to control the majority of baseline

:16:02.:16:02.

rallies. Four games in a row for Serena

:16:03.:16:46.

Williams them has taken her to the verge of victory. After those first

:16:47.:16:56.

three or four games where Serena did not look sure of herself, now she

:16:57.:17:01.

has got accustomed to playing a match on grass, she is more used to

:17:02.:17:05.

the balls and how they bounce, this bead of the court. She is flowing.

:17:06.:17:15.

-- the speed of the court. If you have a lovely serf like she has,

:17:16.:17:19.

normally very solid about head, that's lovely throwing action.

:17:20.:17:24.

Amazing how sometimes some of the players on the tour don't have that

:17:25.:17:28.

natural motion of throwing a ball and Serena naturally has that arm

:17:29.:17:34.

strength, that great emotion. It is a very natural shot for her. She

:17:35.:17:45.

would be pretty good at baseball. Or a quarterback in American football?

:17:46.:17:50.

I wonder how far she could throw a football. If I put Bayview Hail Mary

:17:51.:17:59.

's. You must ask about. Serving for a place in the second round. -- you

:18:00.:18:06.

must ask her that. That is being more aggressive with

:18:07.:18:29.

the backhand. A view times we have seen Serena guiding the backhand,

:18:30.:18:32.

trying to make it and know she is feeling more confident, taking a

:18:33.:18:38.

view things of that wing as well. -- now she is feeling more confident,

:18:39.:18:47.

taking a few swings of that wing as well. Tatishvili has made the one

:18:48.:19:06.

hour mark but it may not last much longer because Serena has three

:19:07.:19:07.

match points. A successful start to her 15th

:19:08.:19:44.

Wimbledon campaign, and really the only moment of threat were those

:19:45.:19:49.

break points in the very first game. Absolutely, once Serena settled into

:19:50.:19:53.

the match, getting through those first few games of her first

:19:54.:19:56.

grasscourt match this season, she seemed to get more confident, and

:19:57.:20:01.

she got so much better as the match went on. Being the old fashioned man

:20:02.:20:09.

that I am, how nice that Tatishvili is not just walking off, she is

:20:10.:20:14.

waiting. It was the old Wimbledon tradition, you came on together, you

:20:15.:20:25.

walked off together. Serena is always very generous to her

:20:26.:20:28.

opponents in the handshake and the comments afterwards. And also with

:20:29.:20:36.

the fans, finding time for autographs.

:20:37.:21:01.

Some noise in the crowd because they have been told they will be an

:21:02.:21:08.

additional match on the Centre Court featuring the runner-up at the

:21:09.:21:11.

French Open, Simona Halep. She will begin shortly in a further much on

:21:12.:21:14.

the Centre Court. That's a real bonus for the crowd. What an honour

:21:15.:21:30.

for Simona Halep as well. This is the new thing, is Alfie. I would not

:21:31.:21:39.

have a clue how to do one of those. You don't do those! A great

:21:40.:21:52.

souvenir! A photograph, and a headband as well. Simona Halep may

:21:53.:22:03.

not make it onto the court because Serena will still be there! 16 aces

:22:04.:22:21.

from Serena Williams in a match that lasted 61 minutes, very impressive.

:22:22.:22:28.

Winning 70% of the points behind her first serve. This is the 71st

:22:29.:22:34.

victory at Wimbledon for Serena Williams. 6-1. And 6-2. Over Anna

:22:35.:22:49.

Tatishvili. And she will be back in action on Thursday. But her first

:22:50.:23:00.

task after the match is to have a chat. Serena congratulations. A very

:23:01.:23:08.

tough first game of the match but it seemed that got out of the way and

:23:09.:23:13.

you won it, you got rolling. Last time I played her, she ended the

:23:14.:23:18.

match very tough and she started out where she ended, so you know, she

:23:19.:23:22.

can hit really, really hard so I was ready for that. She took a tumble. A

:23:23.:23:26.

little slippery. How were conditions? On a Mac it was weird, I

:23:27.:23:33.

usually feel really good and I kept falling today, but it's probably

:23:34.:23:37.

just getting my bearings. I didn't play much grass last year. I think I

:23:38.:23:43.

will be OK. If anyone knows your way around Wimbledon it is you. The

:23:44.:23:46.

crowd seemed to appreciate you, you got a great reaction when you came

:23:47.:23:50.

off court after winning. It is great, I love playing at Wimbledon,

:23:51.:23:54.

you dream of coming here when you are young and to break is such an

:23:55.:23:58.

honour for me. Every time I step out on the court it makes we want to

:23:59.:24:03.

keep coming for years and years. We look forward to chatting with you

:24:04.:24:09.

later in the tournament. Thank you. SUE BARKER: Serena Williams,

:24:10.:24:12.

smiling, leaving Centre Court. She had a long wait after the Nadal

:24:13.:24:18.

match went on for four sets but after that epic opening game at all

:24:19.:24:21.

went one way. Serena Williams, the top seed, the favoured the title,

:24:22.:24:29.

through straight sets. That has been happening on Centre Court. On Court

:24:30.:24:33.

Number One, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, the number 13 seed, is true,

:24:34.:24:38.

although Daniel Agger each of the first -- served for the first set.

:24:39.:24:45.

Bouchard took the first set 7-5, is a finalist at the Australian Open

:24:46.:24:48.

and the French Open, a staff of the future, she is through her opening

:24:49.:24:52.

match. This is what she had to say afterwards. Congratulations, a

:24:53.:24:57.

straight sets win but that looked it up much. It absolutely was. Your

:24:58.:25:04.

first match is always tough, especially at Wimbledon. I was a

:25:05.:25:07.

little nervous. I did not play my best. Until the end, and that is

:25:08.:25:12.

what matters. You practised on grass at the weekend but to play a match

:25:13.:25:16.

of that intensity, that's the kind of match that you want to help you

:25:17.:25:20.

get through to the later rounds of the tournament. Fishel. She is a

:25:21.:25:25.

really good player, it's a really tough match and she wasn't giving me

:25:26.:25:29.

many chances. I did not play quite as aggressively as I wanted to. At

:25:30.:25:34.

the end when it counted I upped it a bit. You've been following the World

:25:35.:25:38.

Cup, where you are blade watching Nixon: Smite? I was! I did not watch

:25:39.:25:44.

much of it but I randomly turned on the TV and it was goalless, and then

:25:45.:25:48.

in the next few men it is, they scored two goals so I am happy that

:25:49.:26:04.

they won. And a lot of people are happy that you one. Congratulations.

:26:05.:26:06.

SUE BARKER: A play with a big feature, but you'll only Jankovic is

:26:07.:26:11.

out, she was beaten by Kaia Kanepi, who has twice been a quarterfinalist

:26:12.:26:16.

at Wimbledon, and she has put Jiminy Jankovic out in straight sets, 6-3,

:26:17.:26:23.

6-2. -- yelling at Jankovic. Another seed is out of the Championships.

:26:24.:26:29.

Let's round at the British players in action today. -- let's round them

:26:30.:26:36.

up. Daniel Smethurst was that his first ever Wimbledon facing the

:26:37.:26:40.

number nine seed, the giant John Isner. A brave effort but Daniel

:26:41.:26:46.

went down in three sets, but it was an entertaining match on Court

:26:47.:26:56.

three. Samantha Murray was up against Maria Sharapova on Court in

:26:57.:27:00.

one, her first appearance on the big show courts. The number five seed

:27:01.:27:05.

came through in straight sets, six - one, 6-0 but the match was closer

:27:06.:27:10.

than the score suggests. Maria threw in 58 minutes. It could be Maria

:27:11.:27:16.

Sharapova and Serena Williams in the quarterfinal. But good news for

:27:17.:27:22.

Britain, have the Watson, the British and the one, is through,

:27:23.:27:27.

against Ali and Tomljanovic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-2. - she is having a

:27:28.:27:38.

wonderful year, Heather, impressive at Eastbourne and the crowd enjoying

:27:39.:27:42.

her victory on Court No three. After the celebrations, Heather had this

:27:43.:27:46.

to say in her press conference because she was asked about the

:27:47.:27:49.

three British players were into the second round, herself, Andy Murray

:27:50.:27:53.

and Naomi Broady. This is what she said. Being from Guernsey I could

:27:54.:27:59.

not stay in Guernsey, I had to leave, so I tried looking at options

:28:00.:28:07.

in the UK, different ones, and even around Europe, but when I went to

:28:08.:28:13.

visit the academy I knew it was the place me and I was very excited and

:28:14.:28:17.

wanted to go there and one of the main reasons was that the weather

:28:18.:28:23.

was very good, and also it was so competitive, not just in tennis but

:28:24.:28:31.

in all the sports. So for me, I could not stay here, I don't think,

:28:32.:28:36.

because it just wasn't for me. I think also the weather plays a big

:28:37.:28:43.

part. Has anyone ever asked you, anyone from the LTA, what they can

:28:44.:28:48.

do to better suit a player like you who has gone abroad? They did not

:28:49.:28:53.

ask me. I had the choice. I chose Florida but they supported my

:28:54.:28:55.

decision and supported me through it. They could easily have let me

:28:56.:29:02.

be. That tennis being an expensive sport to be involved in, every

:29:03.:29:09.

little helps. SUE BARKER: Heather explaining why she did not come

:29:10.:29:13.

through the LTA system with Andy Murray and Naomi Broady. Sam Smith

:29:14.:29:16.

is with me. This point often comes about Wimbledon. What are the LTA

:29:17.:29:21.

doing with their money because apart from the three winners, and that he

:29:22.:29:25.

did not come to the LTA system and neither did I, neither did Tim or

:29:26.:29:28.

Greg Rusedski. Other people have to go elsewhere. Is there a system?

:29:29.:29:40.

Clearly Heather, when she was 12, going to the States, huge decision,

:29:41.:29:44.

when she felt she had to make, she clearly did not think there was a

:29:45.:29:48.

system she could go into, one that would be successful, so you'll have

:29:49.:29:53.

to make other arrangements. I think that has happened with the LTA. They

:29:54.:29:57.

know they have to make changes. Now they are beginning to make good

:29:58.:30:02.

changes by ringing in Bob Brett as performance director and bringing

:30:03.:30:05.

people in that know the game so well -- bringing him in. Is it not just

:30:06.:30:11.

shovelling buttocks? I do hope that bringing in new people means making

:30:12.:30:18.

changes - shovelling the decks. Being around British tennis for a

:30:19.:30:22.

long time, trying to create a system with players in Britain, it doesn't

:30:23.:30:26.

seem to work in Britain. It comes from individuals making their own

:30:27.:30:31.

way. Sometimes not finding an easy part. Sometimes being close to

:30:32.:30:35.

leaving the game running out of money and maybe finding a way -- an

:30:36.:30:39.

easy path. Usually it comes from amazing parents who go the extra

:30:40.:30:44.

mile. From our generations, great coaches. That wonderful relationship

:30:45.:30:47.

with them, they see you through thick and thin. A good support

:30:48.:30:52.

network. Of course you need funding and help and this is where the LTA

:30:53.:30:56.

have played a good role. When I was on the tour there were things that

:30:57.:30:59.

they helped me with which would have been a struggle. One of the wise old

:31:00.:31:06.

Australian players once told me, you only value what you earn. When you

:31:07.:31:10.

don't have much support, you have to learn it. What you are given, not so

:31:11.:31:17.

much. Unfortunately, I always think the LT eight try to help players

:31:18.:31:21.

with the best of intentions but it is not helping them in many ways -

:31:22.:31:23.

the LTA. It takes away their hunger. going to Florida, I know players of

:31:24.:31:42.

Heather's generation who are not going to do that. That is what you

:31:43.:31:54.

have to do. There are some young boys coming through the juniors. I

:31:55.:32:04.

think Brett is going around making sure they are using the new coaching

:32:05.:32:11.

system, not the outdated one. We have always had good juniors. Tim

:32:12.:32:17.

was not a good junior, he blossomed later on. I am of the school that

:32:18.:32:23.

says so much effort has to go into the young kids, get great coaching,

:32:24.:32:28.

and that's when you need the support when you are really young, to get

:32:29.:32:34.

noticed at ten or 11 or 12. I really believe that if you are really good,

:32:35.:32:39.

and people are desperate to find British tennis players male or

:32:40.:32:44.

female, if you are really good you will make it happen. I always feel

:32:45.:32:51.

in Britain it all seems to go at the top end of the game instead of right

:32:52.:32:55.

at the start. If you look at Russia for example, all of their great

:32:56.:33:01.

coaches are at seven, eight, nine years of age. That is where their

:33:02.:33:07.

money goes. We have been having this conversation for a few years,

:33:08.:33:13.

haven't we? And we are going to keep having it, aren't we? I No, thank

:33:14.:33:20.

you very much! Tomorrow Andy Murray will be on Court Number One but

:33:21.:33:23.

let's have a look at Centre Court first up. The D -- lefty Dellacquia

:33:24.:33:55.

up against Radwanska. On Court One, Andy Murray is first up against Blaz

:33:56.:34:02.

Rola, expected to win comfortably but there is no such thing as an

:34:03.:34:10.

easy match in tennis. Andy Murray had a day off the show courts

:34:11.:34:12.

easy match in tennis. Andy Murray had a day off the show courts but he

:34:13.:34:14.

has been here on the practice courts, going from the routine that

:34:15.:34:21.

took him to the Wimbledon title one year ago. Amelie Mauresmo is behind

:34:22.:34:29.

him. And he plays tomorrow after a comfortable first day. It was an

:34:30.:34:33.

emotional return to the defending champion and we followed him every

:34:34.:34:34.

step of the way. So, Wimbledon is under way. The

:34:35.:34:52.

weather is glorious, there is so much excitement around the grounds

:34:53.:34:58.

and that is because Britain's Wimbledon champion is here. Andy

:34:59.:35:02.

relishes pressure here at Wimbledon and I think he did the hard work

:35:03.:35:08.

here last year, he will be fine. I expect to be nervous, I expect to

:35:09.:35:14.

feel the pressure. I hope that when I walk out there I can enjoy it for

:35:15.:35:20.

a few moments. After the first few games you settle into the match and

:35:21.:35:22.

it is fine. Ideal day, ideal start to his

:35:23.:35:38.

defence. He has a very firm hold on this

:35:39.:35:52.

opening-round match, leading 2-0. He overwhelmed the diminutive

:35:53.:36:30.

Belgian in the beginning couple, alt muscles him and Andy Murray moves

:36:31.:36:36.

swiftly into the second round. Sometimes you can win in three sets

:36:37.:36:41.

and not play well and it can be a scrappy match, but in terms of the

:36:42.:36:46.

way I struck the ball today, it was good. SUE BARKER: The crowd gave him

:36:47.:36:58.

a huge ovation when he walked onto the as champion. The big four all

:36:59.:37:05.

have to have at least one match on Court Number One, they cannot all

:37:06.:37:10.

stay on centre. Here is the scene after seven o'clock, people enjoying

:37:11.:37:26.

tennis still on the Hill. If none of -- we can join this match and

:37:27.:37:33.

watching this one is Virginia Wade and Jason Goodall.

:37:34.:37:42.

COMMENTATOR: It is an excellent service game from the Italian. Both

:37:43.:37:47.

girls have made great starts with a break of serve beach. Three apiece.

:37:48.:37:54.

Some good ball striking and particularly some excellent all

:37:55.:37:56.

court tennis from Ivanovic. Schiavone, holding her own pretty

:37:57.:38:19.

much. There haven't been too many wild

:38:20.:38:51.

backhands. Schiavone has been using a slice backhand to good effect,

:38:52.:38:57.

keeping the ball nice and low. We have kept remembering that Ivanovic

:38:58.:39:05.

is six foot tall and generally likes of all that sits up a little bit.

:39:06.:39:12.

That is great play. Has she made a mistake at the net? She has been

:39:13.:39:19.

very good. Both players have chosen their moments wisely to move

:39:20.:39:24.

forwards. Well I never! Old school. Some serve

:39:25.:39:48.

and volleying from Ivanovic, of course she has had three tournament

:39:49.:39:55.

victories this year, more recently in Birmingham. It is always

:39:56.:39:59.

important to come into the Championships with some confidence

:40:00.:40:02.

and if you are able to win one of the few tournaments you get to play

:40:03.:40:07.

before Wimbledon, it is a huge bonus. It really is. Changing

:40:08.:40:13.

surfaces, you need to spend time on the new surface. If you are going to

:40:14.:40:19.

play, you might have to spend more time adjusting to play on grass,

:40:20.:40:24.

depending on your style, but it is really good to see her in such good

:40:25.:40:30.

form. Since she won the French Open, she couldn't cope with the

:40:31.:40:34.

expectation on her. She started off that year and injured her thumb,

:40:35.:40:47.

which didn't help. I honestly think that Ivanovic, all of that

:40:48.:40:55.

extraneous attention for her was very difficult for her to cope with

:40:56.:40:59.

and keep her attention on the tennis, where it needed to be. Of

:41:00.:41:05.

course her best result here was in the semifinals in 2007. Of course

:41:06.:41:12.

she is a former world number one, now ranked just outside the top ten,

:41:13.:41:22.

11 in the world. New balls. I don't know who that is going to help

:41:23.:41:27.

actually. Usually it is the server, but maybe not.

:41:28.:41:35.

Just out, that ball. It is just hard to believe that neither of these

:41:36.:41:44.

players has done well at Wimbledon at all. It is hard to believe it is

:41:45.:41:52.

so long since Ivanovic was in the semifinal. Just hasn't been able to

:41:53.:41:53.

execute on the grass. What an angle! And superb variation

:41:54.:42:34.

because initially you had the heavily sliced backhand which was

:42:35.:42:37.

nice and deep, and coming on the outside edge of the ball on the

:42:38.:42:44.

forehand, causing all sorts of problems for Ivanovic. The sun

:42:45.:42:52.

hasn't quite gone down so it is always difficult for the players to

:42:53.:43:01.

pick the ball up there. Still the first server is not consistent

:43:02.:43:03.

enough, only 42% of first serves in. Too bad. I mean, obviously because

:43:04.:43:24.

it is grass we are seeing Francesca hit more slice backhands and

:43:25.:43:28.

sometimes the slice sits up a little bit but we have seen a few of her

:43:29.:43:32.

magnificent top-spin backhand is as well. -- backhands.

:43:33.:43:47.

She has been so aggressive with that second serve return position, well

:43:48.:44:09.

inside the baseline. That allows her to get the first strike in the

:44:10.:44:15.

rally. She really nailed that ball. It was coming right for us, Jason,

:44:16.:44:22.

in the commentary box, and it had something behind it. You didn't

:44:23.:44:32.

notice but I ducked behind you so I was OK! First serve paying off.

:44:33.:45:07.

A little disappointing for Schiavone not to win that point. She had her

:45:08.:45:25.

chances. Even those Schiavone's rankings have

:45:26.:46:02.

dropped a little bit, she is still fiercely competitive. One of the

:46:03.:46:09.

oldest women in the top 100, but still in superb physical shape. She

:46:10.:46:15.

sure is. She has to chase a lot of balls always when she plays, and she

:46:16.:46:17.

never gives up. That is an important hold. I think

:46:18.:46:52.

coming into the match, Virginia, many would have thought Ivanovic was

:46:53.:47:00.

a firm favourite here and might have won the match comfortably but

:47:01.:47:04.

Schiavone has played some wonderful tennis in this opening set. It has

:47:05.:47:08.

been a wonderful combination of styles. The issue for Ivanovic is in

:47:09.:47:19.

her desire to overpower Schiavone. She has got to be careful not to go

:47:20.:47:24.

for too much, she has got to be patient. This is the first time we

:47:25.:47:28.

have seen her do the toss over. That was a case of when the ball

:47:29.:47:46.

came right into the sun, I don't think she saw it terribly well.

:47:47.:48:02.

Fantastic shot. Wasn't absolutely the best serve out wide but it did

:48:03.:48:08.

open up the court for her. Probably a little distracting to

:48:09.:48:17.

have them shout out at this stage. Of course this is their first

:48:18.:48:35.

meeting on this particular surface but Ivanovic has had a lot of

:48:36.:48:40.

success against Schiavone in the past, winning all five of their

:48:41.:48:41.

meetings. So it is getting nice and tight at

:48:42.:49:16.

the tail end of this opening set. There has been some lovely variation

:49:17.:49:21.

that we have seen from both players. Particularly Schiavone on

:49:22.:49:25.

the backhand. We know that she prefers to play her tennis on a clay

:49:26.:49:31.

court, but on a grass court it is the sliced shots, particularly the

:49:32.:49:35.

backhand, that can work so effectively. The top-spin backhand

:49:36.:49:47.

here is the Reg Trail. The beauty of the slice is that it stays low. She

:49:48.:49:53.

has radical changes in the effect of the bounce on her backhand. Once in

:49:54.:49:59.

a while I like to see her utilising the slice against a tall player like

:50:00.:50:06.

Ivanovic, but sometimes on the backhand slice she gets a little too

:50:07.:50:11.

underneath the ball, knifing through it. It stands up a little bit. I'm

:50:12.:50:19.

impressed with the way Ivanovic is handling it. It is a big game,

:50:20.:50:26.

certainly Schiavone needs a lot more firsts nerves than she has been able

:50:27.:50:27.

to find as yet. She was ready and waiting. It is

:50:28.:50:56.

always risky approaching crosscourt to your opponent's forehand. An

:50:57.:51:03.

illustration in point of all of those backhands. She got them really

:51:04.:51:10.

deep and low, and showed us some top-spin as well.

:51:11.:51:36.

Bonus for Schiavone. In fact, I think that ball almost came up to

:51:37.:51:49.

short for Ivanovic. She didn't judge it as being that short. Her 10th

:51:50.:51:55.

unforced error. Look at this aggressive position

:51:56.:52:12.

that Ana takes up when she gets a look at the second serve. You can

:52:13.:52:15.

almost say that she burned the double there. -- earned. The second

:52:16.:52:25.

for the Italian. That is a huge difference, only 35%

:52:26.:52:38.

of points won when she misses it. Sometimes when you serve out wide to

:52:39.:53:17.

the forehand side, you don't quite get the angle on it and it goes

:53:18.:53:21.

right into the middle of the racket, the sweet spot of the opponent.

:53:22.:53:40.

Absolutely brilliant. Superb tennis from Schiavone.

:53:41.:53:54.

It is absolutely terrific to see Schiavone playing with such variety

:53:55.:54:03.

and skill. You remember when she won the French a few years ago how

:54:04.:54:08.

excited we were. We all loved it because she is one-of-a-kind.

:54:09.:54:31.

It is funny you mention that, because even though that was played

:54:32.:54:38.

on clay, which everyone thinks as primarily defensive, it was a real

:54:39.:54:47.

feature win, wasn't it? I remember even at the end when it got really

:54:48.:54:52.

tired, she just kept coming to the net. I think it was a tie-break in

:54:53.:54:59.

the second set, and so easy, especially on clay, to start getting

:55:00.:55:04.

nervous about coming in and getting past and you have to stay aggressive

:55:05.:55:08.

and she kept coming in, and it paid off.

:55:09.:55:19.

A good tactic to use on a grass court, but it behind your opponent.

:55:20.:55:28.

-- put it. this set? I always think so.

:55:29.:56:08.

Especially on grass. It has been highly competitive, both

:56:09.:57:13.

players attempting to raise the level of their game towards the end

:57:14.:57:20.

of this set. I think there were a few tame points in this game, which

:57:21.:57:26.

is something we haven't had. We have had every single point being really

:57:27.:57:34.

repeated through to the end, so let's see if Schiavone can pull

:57:35.:57:39.

herself together to play a good game here. We saw Ivanovic with some very

:57:40.:57:44.

good body language. Do you think that is a good thing or is she

:57:45.:57:49.

generally prone to overdoing it? I agree, she is generally prone to

:57:50.:57:55.

overdoing it a lot. It is such a necessity not to over celebrate

:57:56.:58:00.

because it raises your heart rate instead of what she is trying to do,

:58:01.:58:05.

really stay calm, but I didn't mind it then because it was getting a

:58:06.:58:12.

little tight at 5-5 and she needed to increase her adrenaline a little

:58:13.:58:17.

bit. But she has got to make a choice, Ivanovic, on whether she

:58:18.:58:22.

goes for broke on some of the points in this game.

:58:23.:58:30.

I don't know if that was all she could do or if that was going for

:58:31.:58:35.

broke. Definitely the latter. Ivanovic needs to still keep the

:58:36.:59:02.

patients quota. It is an ace! It is a lovely serve.

:59:03.:59:31.

Nigel was always asking her to get more height, elevation, spin,

:59:32.:59:32.

control. A great scoop up. Yes, I think

:59:33.:59:56.

Jason... As we all know, when you want to remain aggressive, you want

:59:57.:00:02.

to remain hitting the ball but you have got to put more spin on as a

:00:03.:00:04.

safety factor when you get nervous. net so far. Tactics working well. It

:00:05.:00:54.

has been a tight opening set. Only fitting that a tie-break will decide

:00:55.:01:24.

matters after 43 minutes. They have been to three sets a couple of times

:01:25.:01:27.

before but not for quite a long time. Once on clay. Way back, almost

:01:28.:01:39.

ten years ago, Ivanovic winning all the previous contests. A sensible

:01:40.:01:52.

forehand. She waited until she saw Ana Ivanovic moving one way or the

:01:53.:01:58.

other. One thing you can never accuse Francesca of is doing the

:01:59.:02:02.

wrong thing. She is always trying to do the right thing. And some lovely

:02:03.:02:26.

variation. Wonderful feel. Three very good points from her.

:02:27.:02:49.

It's just flattened out nicely, the serve. Good pace on that.

:02:50.:03:12.

That was an interesting shot. I got the feeling that Schiavone stopped

:03:13.:03:23.

because she thought she had hit it out and because she stopped Ivanovic

:03:24.:03:26.

looked over and saw that she had stopped and also thought the ball

:03:27.:03:32.

had gone out and hesitated. A bit of good fortune for Schiavone. Not what

:03:33.:03:57.

she wanted! Such a big difference. Changing ends with an advantage of

:03:58.:04:04.

5-1, compared to 4-2, a third double fault for the Italian. She rushed

:04:05.:04:10.

that second serve. Not something she's usually guilty of. Now it is

:04:11.:04:18.

for Ivanovic to maintain an interest in this tie-break. Very well played

:04:19.:04:50.

from Ivanovic. Tricky shot. Done nicely, brushed the back of the

:04:51.:04:55.

ball. Aggressive intent with the feet as well. Through the ball

:04:56.:05:04.

beautifully. -- throwing the ball beautifully. A couple of points, a

:05:05.:05:07.

bit of good fortune with the double fault, and Ivanovic is right back in

:05:08.:05:09.

it now. That is that! A superb pass. Always

:05:10.:05:58.

risky coming in crosscourt to your bone and's forehand. -- to your

:05:59.:06:06.

opponent's forehand. You have do follow the line of the ball as

:06:07.:06:09.

opposed to moving to the middle of the court. I thought that was the

:06:10.:06:13.

only place she could play that. She played it a little late, and boy,

:06:14.:06:21.

was that good! A big change from 1-4 to-4. Schiavone is under pressure

:06:22.:06:24.

now. - from 1-4 two 5-4. Accountability missed that one! Such

:06:25.:06:54.

a good rally. -- I cannot believe that she missed that one! A couple

:06:55.:06:58.

of digs from Schiavone, she had to work so hard to stay in the rally.

:06:59.:07:08.

Which she'd dare serve that whites to the forehand? -- would she dare

:07:09.:07:11.

serve that whites to the forehand? Disappointing for her, because she

:07:12.:07:46.

played an intelligent second serve, a slow, heavy, deep one.

:07:47.:07:58.

See if it gives any more little instructions, although nobody is

:07:59.:08:20.

looking at him. Plenty of drama throughout this first set but both

:08:21.:08:24.

are now getting a little tight, Virginia. With that forehand and

:08:25.:08:29.

backhand that she missed, Ivanovic, that had to be pure tension and

:08:30.:08:33.

indecision when it gets sites like that because she hasn't missed any

:08:34.:08:36.

of them. She has been hitting them so well. A Schmeichel when it gets

:08:37.:08:44.

tight, like that. The key for Ivanovic seems to be picking her

:08:45.:08:47.

target and hitting with a little more spin, keeping the ball, making

:08:48.:08:55.

sure that she hates it firmly. -- that he hits it firmly.

:08:56.:09:01.

Another chance to wrap up this opening set.

:09:02.:09:39.

And she does! A superb set of tennis but it is Ivanovic who eventually

:09:40.:09:50.

prevails after 52 minutes. Sub-6. -- 7-6. SUE BARKER: What an

:09:51.:09:58.

entertaining match, Ivanovic coming back in that tie-break to take the

:09:59.:10:02.

opening set. Let's take you around some of the other courts where play

:10:03.:10:07.

continues in the evening. Simona Halep is on Centre Court, you can

:10:08.:10:11.

watch this on the red button, she was recently runner-up at the French

:10:12.:10:16.

Open, and she is taking on Pereira of Brazil, Simona Halep has taken

:10:17.:10:23.

the opening set 6-2. On Court Number Two, Tara Moore of Great Britain, a

:10:24.:10:29.

wild card ranked 250 that her opponent Vera Zvonareva also needed

:10:30.:10:35.

a wildcard because her ranking is in and around 526, she has had a year

:10:36.:10:40.

and a half away from tennis because of surgery but she was once

:10:41.:10:44.

runner-up at Wimbledon. Zvonareva has a break of serve but a brave

:10:45.:10:48.

performance on Tara Moore, impressive last year at Wimbledon.

:10:49.:10:53.

Colour solids Navarro has won her match in straight sets. -- Carless

:10:54.:11:01.

Wallace Navarro. -- Carla Suarez Navarro. She is safely through.

:11:02.:11:07.

We've still got 20 minutes of live tennis to go before John is here

:11:08.:11:12.

with Today At Wimbledon. The highlights of a very entertaining

:11:13.:11:16.

day at the Championships. With 20 minutes to go, let's rejoin the

:11:17.:11:17.

action on Court One. So, Ana Ivanovic, one set to the

:11:18.:11:30.

good, had to battle bravely throughout the course of it, to get

:11:31.:11:35.

the better of Francesca Schiavone. Didn't have great form coming into

:11:36.:11:40.

this tournament, has not had the best of seasons, 1/3-round

:11:41.:11:44.

appearance was a highlight, but really rolled back the years and not

:11:45.:11:47.

opening set, played some sterling stuff. -- in that opening set. It

:11:48.:11:53.

was Ivanovic that opening set. It was Ivanovic came back and fought

:11:54.:11:57.

back bravely in the tie-break, coming from 4-1 down to eventually

:11:58.:12:05.

when it 8-6. Quite a discussion with the umpire at the changeover from

:12:06.:12:08.

front just go. They could not remember which side they were due to

:12:09.:12:15.

play. I believe the discussion was the fact that Ivanovic's coach is

:12:16.:12:19.

constantly, and it is still going on, making signs.

:12:20.:12:30.

As far as I could tell, as we picked up once, Ivanovic's coach was making

:12:31.:12:42.

hand signals all the time. That is illegal but a lot of coaches do it.

:12:43.:12:55.

It is going to be hard that Schiavone to pull herself together

:12:56.:13:03.

and regroup - -- for her to pull is off together and become motivated

:13:04.:13:05.

again after playing for almost one hour and losing one set. It might

:13:06.:13:09.

encourage her. She has served a couple of doubles

:13:10.:13:48.

now. Many of those have been because Ivanovic takes up this most

:13:49.:13:50.

aggressive position when she gets a look at the second serve. -- this

:13:51.:13:58.

nice, aggressive position. It can be intimidating for a server to glance

:13:59.:14:02.

up and see a player moving inside the baseline, ready to take the ball

:14:03.:14:12.

on the rise. It certainly is. How many times has she just connected

:14:13.:14:15.

very smoothly with that serve to the forehand? Schiavone has tried to mix

:14:16.:14:23.

it up and go really wide. That one was a little more to the middle, but

:14:24.:14:29.

many times Ivanovic has connected perfectly.

:14:30.:14:40.

We have not seen her kicking a ball yet, but she does that well! To a

:14:41.:14:56.

good! You didn't mention Italian football, did you? You know that is

:14:57.:15:02.

a no-no! LAUGHTER I didn't mention it, I promise! From

:15:03.:15:24.

40-15, deuce. She could not quite control it. It was a bit of a turn

:15:25.:15:32.

from Ivanovic. The problem for Schiavone has been that she doesn't

:15:33.:15:36.

get the width on that sliced serve, right into the hitting zone, nice

:15:37.:15:41.

variation from Ivanovic, she's been going crosscourt with the winning

:15:42.:15:45.

return lately, that one went up the line, keeping her opponent guessing

:15:46.:15:49.

and her reward is an opportunity to break now. Nicely done. Important

:15:50.:16:01.

not to panic on the big points, to stick with the patterns of play that

:16:02.:16:05.

you know have worked feel, not only throughout your career but in this

:16:06.:16:10.

particular match. -- the ones you know have worked for you.

:16:11.:16:31.

A better second serve, though. She tried to smother it and the kick

:16:32.:16:45.

just got it away from her. I don't think he's reading, I think he's

:16:46.:16:46.

taking a picture! Needed to work hard for the hold but

:16:47.:17:13.

got there in the end. And that has been a problem for Schiavone

:17:14.:17:18.

throughout the match. Her serve is one of the weaker shots and Ivanovic

:17:19.:17:22.

has had a specific game plan in mind when trying to return it. The yellow

:17:23.:17:28.

balls, her position of contact with the return, the blue Bulls represent

:17:29.:17:32.

the second serve so many of those second serve so well inside the

:17:33.:17:35.

baseline and that takes time away from Francesca. Definitely the right

:17:36.:17:40.

thing to do against somebody like Francesca, who varies her serve a

:17:41.:17:46.

lot, but are second serve doesn't have as much priority -- her second

:17:47.:17:53.

serve doesn't have as much rioting. Latterly she has kept the second

:17:54.:18:00.

serve deep, but that is a challenge. I'm not sure that Francesca was

:18:01.:18:06.

ready for the serve. That is the best time to serve, isn't it?

:18:07.:18:11.

LAUGHTER This time she's making sure that she

:18:12.:18:18.

is ready! Players who suffer from hay fever do not relish playing on

:18:19.:18:20.

the grass at Wimbledon. That is just perfect. Was this

:18:21.:18:51.

particularly difficult? She has had some magnificent sliced backhand

:18:52.:18:55.

is, but then she realises that it is just a defensive push back and then

:18:56.:18:58.

she comes into the net and she has the entire court. That is the key,

:18:59.:19:06.

realising that your opponent has to defend in that situation, then

:19:07.:19:12.

that's the right time to sneak in. Almost waiting until they have their

:19:13.:19:15.

heads down and studying the ball, and then they are not watching you!

:19:16.:19:23.

Just chasing that ball toss a bit. Around this time last night it

:19:24.:19:31.

started to shower. Should! -- This report contains flash photography. !

:19:32.:19:38.

Hash! All right. Ivanovic has added more to her game in this last six

:19:39.:19:50.

months. She started to play really well last year. It provides her with

:19:51.:20:02.

more options. Silk -- still troubled sometimes when the ball stays low be

:20:03.:20:11.

given but she is nice and tall. Not quite as good as any Oscar Radwanska

:20:12.:20:19.

and that shot. -- not quite as good as Agnieszka Radwanska at that shot.

:20:20.:20:37.

A superb strike. A high advancing serve that got a good steep return

:20:38.:20:54.

and somehow she manages to find the line, smack in the middle of the

:20:55.:21:05.

line. I feel as if the intensity has gone a little from Schiavone. I'm

:21:06.:21:27.

not sure if that is a problem. Schiavone is by nature a battler.

:21:28.:21:30.

And we mentioned before that the long much she played down in

:21:31.:21:38.

Melbourne -- that long much, four hours 44 minutes, took the record. I

:21:39.:21:43.

can't remember who won the match! She also played a marathon at the

:21:44.:22:01.

U.S. Open one year. And that one was against that really good Japanese

:22:02.:22:05.

player who isn't playing any more. I can look it up! It went on for three

:22:06.:22:11.

days. There was rain and it went on for hours and hours. It was

:22:12.:22:18.

incredible. And she won that one. She will remind you that she did win

:22:19.:22:27.

16-14 in the third set in Melbourne. The longest ever much there, as far

:22:28.:22:33.

as the women are concerned. -- the longest ever match there. Ai

:22:34.:22:48.

Sugiyama. That is the wonder of notes!

:22:49.:23:01.

Just tried to be too good with that one. Isn't it amazing, with the game

:23:02.:23:09.

that Schiavone has, and the fact that she has won the French Open,

:23:10.:23:13.

isn't it amazing that she hasn't done better on grass? It is a little

:23:14.:23:18.

late in her career now to expect her to go all the way bet she has

:23:19.:23:23.

certainly had many years when her tennis was so good, she could have.

:23:24.:23:30.

-- that she has had many years. The best result was the quarterfinal in

:23:31.:23:34.

2009, she has reached at least the quarterfinals in all four of the

:23:35.:23:51.

major tournaments. Just a little too flat, that final forehand.

:23:52.:23:57.

major tournaments. Just a little too flat, that Sometimes when the ball

:23:58.:24:00.

clipped the top of the net it is easy to get a little flat-footed in

situations like that, dance around the top of the ball. SUE BARKER: She

:25:15.:25:18.

that one, they are in the early stages of the second set so the

:25:19.:25:22.

British wildcard, Tara Moore, is battling on, on Court Two. That is

:25:23.:25:29.

on the red button. Simona Halep will be online so you can watch her much

:25:30.:25:33.

online. We are staying with this much for the next few minutes but

:25:34.:25:37.

coverage is starting on the red button so to keep watching this you

:25:38.:25:41.

can keep watching by using the red button although in a few minutes

:25:42.:25:45.

John will be here with all the highlights of today's play. For the

:25:46.:25:50.

next few minutes we are staying on Court One. Of course it has been a

:25:51.:26:00.

competitive start to the second set, as it was for much of the first set.

:26:01.:26:06.

A few dark clouds in the distance. Fingers crossed we will get through

:26:07.:26:13.

the match without any interruptions. A downpour that sent the players

:26:14.:26:18.

scuttling to Bill Groom. The referee made a quick decision to send

:26:19.:26:22.

everyone home. Many of the matches had to be finished earlier today.

:26:23.:26:28.

These two will hope this one can get finished as well, nothing worse than

:26:29.:26:32.

a sleepless night worrying about the outcome of a match and having to

:26:33.:26:36.

come back the next day to finish it. No breaks of serve in the second set

:26:37.:26:49.

as yet. New balls. 1-2. I am not sure that Schiavone meant to hit the

:26:50.:26:52.

ball so short but it was certainly effective. It will be hard to scoop

:26:53.:27:09.

up. That is awfully good, isn't it? We saw that in the opening set,

:27:10.:27:14.

superb control of the volley. It's always tempting to go deep but the

:27:15.:27:19.

short one is the more effective one. Schiavone did well to get the ball

:27:20.:27:22.

to come down on her toes and she handled the volley so well.

:27:23.:28:32.

SUE BARKER: We are running out of time, just ten seconds to see the

:28:33.:28:40.

end of this rally, which Schiavone has one. We'll be back tomorrow at

:28:41.:28:47.

11:30am. Stay tuned for John with Today at Wimbledon, coming next.
