Wimbledon. Today we will see four players who have stood here as

:00:45.:00:50.

champions. Four players who received the adulation of the Centre Court

:00:51.:00:54.

crowd. Four players who have lifted the trophy high, who have reached

:00:55.:00:58.

the top of their game, who have won the lot. Date two, the day of

:00:59.:01:01.

champions. The champions have arrived, and they

:01:02.:01:51.

are ready to play. Rafael Nadal Pier early this morning, looking for his

:01:52.:01:57.

700th tool victory. -- here early this morning. Serena Williams

:01:58.:02:02.

marching off to practice following the surprise second round loss in

:02:03.:02:10.

Paris. And Vickery went to Maria Sharapova, winning at Roland Garros,

:02:11.:02:15.

her 32nd career title, her fifth Grand Slam. Maria is on court today

:02:16.:02:21.

club against British wild card Sam Murray. Only her second Wimbledon.

:02:22.:02:28.

She is an code number one. We will also be following Heather Watson,

:02:29.:02:33.

the British number one. It is her fifth appearance at Wimbledon. She

:02:34.:02:37.

reached the third round in 2012 and she has been in tremendous form this

:02:38.:02:42.

summer. This was the scene when the gates opened this morning and they

:02:43.:02:48.

all walked patiently in. But they are all trying to get the best view

:02:49.:02:52.

because there is a star-studded line-up today. Here are the matches

:02:53.:02:55.

we will be following here on BBC One.

:02:56.:03:01.

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal suffered a first round shock defeat

:03:02.:03:07.

last year. The world hopes history will not repeat itself today.

:03:08.:03:10.

last year. The world hopes history will

:03:11.:03:25.

Roger Federer has won seven titles at the all England club. He is on

:03:26.:03:33.

Court number one against Paolo Lorenzi.

:03:34.:03:38.

Ten years since Maria first won Wimbledon and she is still winning

:03:39.:03:48.

big titles. The newly crowned French champion plays Samantha Murray on

:03:49.:03:51.

Court one. And after the illness, Heather

:03:52.:03:55.

Watson is back to her best. She is looking for a good run here at

:03:56.:04:01.

Wimbledon. Just before we go out live, some results to bring you. The

:04:02.:04:06.

number five seed, world number three stand, -- world number three

:04:07.:04:14.

Wawrinka is through, beating drowsy Sir of Portugal. -- Joaoa Sousa of

:04:15.:04:24.

Portugal. The two-time semifinalist here at

:04:25.:04:32.

Wimbledon,, is three. What a for Andrea Petkovic. She's

:04:33.:05:04.

through in straight sets today. -- what a summer.

:05:05.:05:13.

So that is some results from earlier today. We will just take you around

:05:14.:05:18.

the grounds and show you what is happening live at the moment. Over

:05:19.:05:27.

on centre court, Sabine Lisicki has started well against Julia Glushko.

:05:28.:05:30.

That will be on the red button shortly.

:05:31.:05:36.

On Court three, Leyton Hewitt is involved in a battle but he is used

:05:37.:05:45.

to those. That match will be on BBC Two very soon.

:05:46.:05:49.

Add on court 17, Yaniv Fitch, the man that Andy Murray beat in the

:05:50.:06:02.

Senate files last year. -- Jesse Yaniv Fitch.

:06:03.:06:13.

see the great man, Roger Federer, number four seed. Five games to one

:06:14.:06:22.

serving against Paolo Lorenzo. Let's watch this against Tim Henman and

:06:23.:06:34.

Simon Read. SIMON READ: Federer looking good.

:06:35.:07:13.

Lorenzi is ranked 83 in the world. He has not won a grandson match. --

:07:14.:07:24.

a Grand Slam match. He had a decent backhand volley. I

:07:25.:07:45.

think he missed one in about 1986, I think was the last one.

:07:46.:08:05.

Federer started pretty much at the baseline but is coming forward more

:08:06.:08:17.

and more now. Good placement from Federer. Not the

:08:18.:08:35.

fastest serves BC, at 190 mph, but the variation of the placement is

:08:36.:08:44.

good. Not the first time he has been picked off on his run forward. A

:08:45.:08:50.

good serve but Federer is not the most natural mover at the net.

:08:51.:09:08.

And that hasn't changed even though he has won all the tournaments? He

:09:09.:09:16.

has not really won them from the net, so his natural instinct is not

:09:17.:09:18.

as good as some. The conditions of the game have

:09:19.:09:49.

changed and sometimes he ends up covering the middle. There is the

:09:50.:09:52.

first set, 6-1. Those are the stats. The yellow is

:09:53.:10:33.

the person who has done better in those particular areas. Very

:10:34.:10:43.

impressive. How would you rate that?

:10:44.:10:51.

Certainly a very good start. The first round is never easy in any

:10:52.:10:57.

tournament. I am sure there would have been a few early nerves so

:10:58.:11:02.

Federer. Certainly 6-1 in under half an hour, he will be very happy and

:11:03.:11:08.

keen to build on that in the second set.

:11:09.:11:32.

The fans that follow him are all the way around the world. He will be

:11:33.:11:43.

enjoying peace and hoping it lasts a little while longer. -- they will be

:11:44.:11:48.

enjoying this. Federer has such good racket head

:11:49.:12:57.

speed. It only needs to be about a millimetre out for a big mis-hit.

:12:58.:13:05.

A bit awkward, there. Lorenzi lost his serve in his first service game

:13:06.:13:13.

in the first set. He needs to try to build a bit of pressure with the

:13:14.:13:17.

scoreboard, if he can build pressure early on, just keep his nose in

:13:18.:13:18.

front. Lamenting looking down at the grass,

:13:19.:13:42.

but I do not think there is any problem there.

:13:43.:14:59.

That is just soft mistake. He played a couple of good points to get back

:15:00.:15:07.

from 15-42 to use, and then it is just a rallying shop. Can't afford

:15:08.:15:11.

to make those mistakes against anyone, let alone Federer. -- he

:15:12.:15:20.

paid a few good points to get back from 15 to 40, two to use, and then

:15:21.:15:24.

it is just a rallying shot. Lorenzi must have feared that when

:15:25.:16:24.

he came in, but he had no other option. The right shot, set the

:16:25.:16:31.

point of well but you see that approach shot just landing over the

:16:32.:16:36.

service lines. Gives Federer time was the ball has bounced just to

:16:37.:16:38.

pick up the passing shot. Just a growl from Federer. You can

:16:39.:17:08.

see where Lorenzi's approach shot landed there, got the defensive

:17:09.:17:10.

reply from Federer. Third ace. Another 100 of those and

:17:11.:17:18.

we will have a match our hands. Great instincts! Lorenzi saves the

:17:19.:18:49.

four break points. Congratulations to him. Federer,

:18:50.:19:13.

multi-zillionaire, father of four, but I do not see any lessening of

:19:14.:19:19.

intensity. Absolutely not, and from what I hear from the training

:19:20.:19:23.

camps, he has been working incredibly hard, and that is a great

:19:24.:19:27.

sign because he knows that if he is not improving he will get left

:19:28.:19:30.

behind, and he still has a massive passion for the game.

:19:31.:19:42.

I think there has always been talk in the press of, when is he going to

:19:43.:19:50.

retire? When should he retire? I just think while he has got a

:19:51.:19:54.

passion and a love for the game, he should play as long as he can.

:19:55.:20:14.

There was a period last year when he was being picked off by players he

:20:15.:20:23.

would normally beat. That was more injury related. His back had not

:20:24.:20:24.

been good. He had not been able to train as

:20:25.:20:34.

much as he would like. And I think because he makes the game look

:20:35.:20:38.

ridiculously easy, people do not appreciate the work that goes into

:20:39.:20:39.

it. UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Certainly

:20:40.:20:57.

made that look easy. And he has brought in fact life. -- that man.

:20:58.:21:07.

Only they know what difference he has made to Federer's game.

:21:08.:22:30.

It is the challenge to try to get foreign -- Federer on the back foot.

:22:31.:24:18.

And that is when the shoe is on the other foot. Lorenzi could not get on

:24:19.:24:25.

the offensive. It was Federer that was dictating play.

:24:26.:25:16.

He certainly did, and you get a feel from watching these rallies who has

:25:17.:25:30.

the upper hand and who can turn defence into attack. Federer was

:25:31.:25:34.

slightly on top in the rally and then Lorenzi got an opportunity. He

:25:35.:25:39.

would certainly like that backhand volley again.

:25:40.:25:55.

Too long. Federer breaks. He has a firmer grip on the match.

:25:56.:26:12.

I want to delve deeper into your statement a few minutes ago about

:26:13.:26:17.

Federer having a passion to play the game. Is it possible to

:26:18.:26:21.

differentiate passion for playing the game and a passion for success?

:26:22.:26:26.

A lot of people would say, yes, he wants to carry on playing the game,

:26:27.:26:30.

he obviously loves it, but there does come a point where he is less

:26:31.:26:38.

successful where he would say, that is enough. The two go hand in hand.

:26:39.:26:43.

He always loved the game and started as a youngster. But it is linked to

:26:44.:26:48.

success because we all know it is much more fun winning and losing.

:26:49.:26:53.

The challenge will be when his form does dip, and it will do eventually.

:26:54.:27:00.

He cannot play forever. It will be interesting to see when he is not

:27:01.:27:06.

winning all the tournaments whether that passion remains. Right now he

:27:07.:27:09.

is one of the favourites for this tournament. The other players move

:27:10.:27:15.

so well. They can take the ball early on a hard court. But certainly

:27:16.:27:20.

on grass, even the way he moves and how offensive he is, you would

:27:21.:27:25.

definitely give him a good chance this fortnight.

:27:26.:28:22.

This is where it is very hard for Lorenzi. He is desperately trying to

:28:23.:28:29.

get a foothold in the match, and once a Federer gets in the league,

:28:30.:28:32.

he's one of the best front runners. -- once Federer gets in the lead.

:28:33.:28:42.

Rapid holes. -- I rapid hold. becomes more aggressive and that is

:28:43.:29:08.

worrying for his opponent. APPLAUSE

:29:09.:30:55.

Just occasionally, he looks a real threat, Lorenzi, with a few moments

:30:56.:30:56.

like that. A slight mis-hit. Federer just

:30:57.:31:41.

questioning. And he is going to challenge. It's not his favourite

:31:42.:31:46.

piece of technology. But he'll still have a go at it.

:31:47.:31:53.

Never grown to love it, has he? He doesn't mind it when he gets a call

:31:54.:32:01.

reversed. I really don't quite understand why

:32:02.:32:22.

he doesn't like it because at the end of the day you don't want bad

:32:23.:32:27.

calls influencing a match and it's a very, very difficult job calling the

:32:28.:32:31.

linesman, the ball is travelling so fast.

:32:32.:32:48.

Gives his raquet a little shake. He enjoyed that. When you've got the

:32:49.:32:54.

option of technology to clarify calls, I think it's a brilliant

:32:55.:32:56.

addition to the game. So another break and it's 4-1.

:32:57.:33:27.

UMPIRE: Federer leads 4-1. Only 48 minutes. The crowd have been

:33:28.:33:36.

lapping it up. Inside here, there's our court. Still called Henman Hill?

:33:37.:33:45.

Was that a question? Hm. Of course. What else could it be called? Well,

:33:46.:33:50.

I did hear someone in the restaurant this morning called it Murray Mound

:33:51.:33:56.

and I thought no, you've got squatters rights, slander.

:33:57.:34:06.

Very difficult to get a grip on this match. You said what a good front

:34:07.:34:13.

runner he is. There has been criticism about him that when he

:34:14.:34:18.

goes behind, he's stubborn, he doesn't really go to a plan B, he

:34:19.:34:24.

won't compromise. Do you buy into that? Well, he certainly does have

:34:25.:34:29.

different game plans and styles. Certainly when your A game has been

:34:30.:34:33.

so good and successful, I think in his mind, if he's not playing well,

:34:34.:34:40.

his first resort is to play better, to improve plan A that when he's in

:34:41.:34:46.

this type of form and situation in a match, he's so good at being

:34:47.:34:50.

aggressive and finishing the job off in a pretty short period of time.

:34:51.:35:00.

Oh, fantastic! There's one for the papers tomorrow.

:35:01.:35:30.

Federer is definitely trying to serve and volley a little bit more

:35:31.:35:37.

and be a bit more aggressive. UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenging the

:35:38.:35:41.

ball on the right. The ball's not out. Almost under his breath.

:35:42.:35:51.

And he's got it. What's not to love about Hawkeye in a situation like

:35:52.:36:00.

that? Looks like he's having a really good

:36:01.:36:17.

time at the moment. That for me shows in actual fact a

:36:18.:36:55.

frailty on Federer's volley. It's a nice serve, but poor volley.

:36:56.:37:01.

UMPIRE: Game Federer. The gap opening ceremony even wider. It's

:37:02.:37:13.

all well and good. All well and good serving a volley and when you're up

:37:14.:37:17.

against a guy that's never won a Grand Slam match, it's whether this

:37:18.:37:22.

type of game plan can really work against one of the best players in

:37:23.:37:25.

the world. That is a challenge because it would be a good element

:37:26.:37:27.

of his game to have working well. UMPIRE: Game second set. The second

:37:28.:39:24.

was easier than the first. No wonder Stephan is smiling. We'll

:39:25.:39:43.

be right back here, but let us show you some results from outside.

:39:44.:39:54.

Radwanska, the runner-up beating her opponent of Romania. That was

:39:55.:39:57.

completed after rain stopped play last night, so was this one with

:39:58.:40:06.

Wozniacki. She beat Peer comfortably. Next for Caroline,

:40:07.:40:19.

Naomi Broady, the wild card. Lisicki was on court as runner-up.

:40:20.:40:25.

Bartoli has retired. She wasn't on court long, lost just three games to

:40:26.:40:31.

Glushko. So back to winning ways. We'll continue to follow this match

:40:32.:40:45.

out on court 17 which has gone the distance between Janowicz and

:40:46.:40:51.

Devvarman. It's 2-1. He's just lost a break point there, but if you want

:40:52.:40:56.

to watch that match, it's live on the red button.

:40:57.:41:22.

Maria will be getting ready for his match next on Court One and it may

:41:23.:41:29.

not be far away with Federer in control, one set away from the

:41:30.:41:33.

second round. It's Sharapova against Britain's Sam Murray, that's next,

:41:34.:41:41.

but let's rejoin Tim Henman and Simon Read, our commentators.

:41:42.:41:46.

FORCEDWHITE SIMON READ: Looks like much of the same. TIM HENMAN: Great

:41:47.:41:48.

volley. Really decisive. Good angle TIM HENMAN: Lorenzi thought he was

:41:49.:42:23.

going to go for the slower kick outwide and be able to hit it down

:42:24.:42:25.

the middle. FORCEDWHITE SIMON READ: Looks

:42:26.:42:37.

perfectly relaxed at the moment. Is there an element with this volley

:42:38.:42:42.

which is that it looks like it's coming back a little bit in the

:42:43.:42:47.

game? Also to protect his legs to a certain extent that, he doesn't want

:42:48.:42:54.

to get involved in too many rallies? I think it's minister to do with an

:42:55.:42:59.

element of surprise. He is serving and volleying 31% behind his first

:43:00.:43:02.

serve, so only three in ten, but at least it's going to put that element

:43:03.:43:06.

of doubt into his opponent's mind, is he going to serve volley and stay

:43:07.:43:11.

back, how do I hit the return and it's not really going to influence

:43:12.:43:17.

the outcome of this match, he's dominating it comfortably. Certainly

:43:18.:43:20.

against the better players in the second week, that's where it is

:43:21.:43:23.

important, just to be serving and volleying a point again.

:43:24.:43:50.

There must have been a few nerves even for Federer as he came in. They

:43:51.:43:57.

may have gone now. Starting to feel sorry for Lorenzi

:43:58.:44:18.

at the minute. Slightly concerned that Federer might charge him for

:44:19.:44:20.

this lesson. Decent ratio? I think it's a good

:44:21.:46:14.

sign when Federer's finishing the point at the net, you know,

:46:15.:46:19.

sometimes using the serve and volley, looking to come in behind

:46:20.:46:22.

the forehand sometimes, but it means he's on the front foot.

:46:23.:47:25.

APPLAUSE Wonder if there's too much respect

:47:26.:47:28.

there. The less said about that point, the better. Yes.

:47:29.:48:08.

UMPIRE: Game Federer. APPLAUSE

:48:09.:48:25.

Talk about his passion for playing and winning. I wonder if just a part

:48:26.:48:32.

of that is Rafa Nadal who lingers just three Grand Slams behind him?

:48:33.:48:36.

It's very interesting and it's amazing how, you know, that rivally

:48:37.:48:40.

has evolved over the years and certainly going back to the 200

:48:41.:48:46.

final, that was the best match I've ever seen, it was incredible, Rafa's

:48:47.:48:51.

first title here and Federer was really racking up the grand slams -

:48:52.:48:58.

2008. When he passed Sampras and got to 15, 16 and now at 17, you just

:48:59.:49:02.

thought, can that ever be reached and Rafa on the back of the French

:49:03.:49:06.

Open's been slowly accumulating and now he's up to 14, just won his

:49:07.:49:11.

ninth French. I never thought that he would be able to catch him, but

:49:12.:49:15.

certainly my opinion has changed over the last couple of years and I

:49:16.:49:20.

really wouldn't be surprised if Rafa can certainly get up to 17, if not

:49:21.:49:26.

more. Just about to start on Centre Court.

:49:27.:49:51.

Off the top of the forget. Made it impossible for Lorenzi and had it

:49:52.:50:00.

virtually on the baseline. -- the net.

:50:01.:50:35.

I sometimes watch Federer volley like that and almost feel that the

:50:36.:50:53.

harder the volley is, the better he actually executes the shot.

:50:54.:51:06.

APPLAUSE I wonder on a personal level,

:51:07.:51:12.

watching Federer, you beat him six times, are you thinking, I did all

:51:13.:51:16.

right? Not in these conditions that's for sure. It was on quicker

:51:17.:51:21.

courts where I felt I could take his time away and when I got the

:51:22.:51:24.

position at the net, I was the favourite. Certainly one year when

:51:25.:51:32.

he beat me here, I wasn't the favourite.

:51:33.:52:00.

Even he would have been impressed if he had have made that shot.

:52:01.:52:18.

UMPIRE: Advantage Federer. Just can't let Federer be stepping into a

:52:19.:52:34.

passing shot, you have to get him on the defensive. If he can step in,

:52:35.:52:37.

he's going to put you off. Listen to the crowd. They want every

:52:38.:54:09.

extra minute they can get out of this match.

:54:10.:54:32.

UMPIRE: Deuce. A collective groan but the coach

:54:33.:54:38.

liked it. APPLAUSE

:54:39.:55:03.

Advantage Lorenzi. APPLAUSE

:55:04.:55:38.

It's like he's won the match. And feeling appreciated.

:55:39.:55:50.

We love Italians really. He's competed well. He's enjoyed it out

:55:51.:55:57.

there and he's hanging in for what it's worth.

:55:58.:56:46.

APPLAUSE Nearly pulled it off.

:56:47.:57:44.

UMPIRE: Game Federer. It stands now at 4-1.

:57:45.:58:07.

He won't be feeling too unhappy having got his game in the third

:58:08.:58:23.

set. It's tough when this happens. A lot

:58:24.:58:28.

of other courts around the world, that ball would have hit the Ball

:58:29.:58:33.

tape and flown way over the baseline.

:58:34.:58:35.

Only a certain amount of tension that you can put between the two net

:58:36.:58:40.

posts, otherwise they'll collapse, so this sell isn't the tightest net

:58:41.:58:47.

there is. The ball really pings off the net in the US.

:58:48.:58:59.

Last year Federer was bundled out of the second round here.

:59:00.:59:01.

Last year Federer was bundled out of the second round Yes, if we allow

:59:02.:59:04.

ourselves to look a little further ahead, in the next round, if Federer

:59:05.:59:13.

comes through this, he'll play Muller or Beneto, both big servers.

:59:14.:59:16.

Both have grass court pedigree. Muller, who is from Belgium, big

:59:17.:59:35.

lefty serve, has been playing mainly on the challenges circuit this year.

:59:36.:59:41.

Has won one or two tournaments and qualified here.

:59:42.:01:16.

Lorenzi coming in on a pair of twos, there.

:01:17.:02:29.

UMPIRE: Game, Federer. Federer again away.

:02:30.:02:44.

Fascinating shot. They are absolutely loving it. On a day like

:02:45.:03:00.

this, just give us a job! It must be great to coach Roger Federer. What

:03:01.:03:06.

you think he added? I think it is more on the mental side. Perhaps a

:03:07.:03:10.

little bit to do with strategy, and obviously big match experience. The

:03:11.:03:20.

won six Grand Slams, twice here in 1988 and 1990. The game has changed

:03:21.:03:25.

a massive amount but any time you have an opportunity of picking the

:03:26.:03:29.

brains of a great champion, it is definitely worthwhile. I was

:03:30.:03:37.

surprised that Roger got a burger is part of his team. I did not really

:03:38.:03:43.

see it coming but I think it is a great addition. -- Federer got

:03:44.:03:58.

Edberg as part of his team. And also keeping things fresh.

:03:59.:04:21.

Certainly at the age of 32, he has been playing pretty much at the

:04:22.:04:24.

highest level since he was about 18, and having a bit of fresh input is

:04:25.:04:26.

good. Federer looks like he's absolutely

:04:27.:04:46.

fed up with himself. Lorenzi would have enjoyed that,

:04:47.:05:57.

between Federer on grass. Doesn't happen too often.

:05:58.:06:23.

I think he's going to challenge. No, he nodded up.

:06:24.:06:35.

Looked like Federer wanted to finish on a winner.

:06:36.:08:14.

A flashing blade moving Florenzi around pretty easily there.

:08:15.:09:34.

Now, perversely, there is more applause when Federer loses a point

:09:35.:09:42.

and when he wins it. They just want to see as much as they possibly can.

:09:43.:10:33.

There has been a fair amount of aggressive backhands.

:10:34.:12:12.

It is almost like Federer was showboating at that point, wanted to

:12:13.:12:19.

finish on the cleanest, hardest, most well struck shot of the match.

:12:20.:13:08.

He is going to challenge. Well, he has got three challenges remaining.

:13:09.:13:13.

He might as well. The crowd are loving this. I do not

:13:14.:14:33.

think it is time for the camp to get too nervous just yet.

:14:34.:15:19.

And almighty cheer to the Italian. It shows the magnitude of the task.

:15:20.:15:31.

Saluting the crowd every game he wins. Even the Federer fans are

:15:32.:15:36.

clapping loudly, because they get just a little bit more.

:15:37.:16:20.

He certainly played that point a bit more cautiously.

:16:21.:17:13.

First double fault of the match her Federer. -- full Federer. Surely

:17:14.:17:43.

coincidence. So here is match point number six.

:17:44.:18:02.

But with one crucial difference. He has the ammunition.

:18:03.:18:11.

Is he going to challenge? He has challenged. I think it was out.

:18:12.:18:23.

Very nearly. The terrific opponent, an a lovely afternoon here on Court

:18:24.:18:39.

One. The players have delighted everyone here. Some glorious

:18:40.:18:53.

moments. We were privileged to see the hour and 33 minutes.

:18:54.:19:05.

Paolo Lorenzi actually played his part. He did. He was always going to

:19:06.:19:12.

be up against it. Never won a Grand Slam and lost his previous match, --

:19:13.:19:18.

previous 12 matches, but he went there and played some good points.

:19:19.:19:21.

Getting a fantastic reception from the Court One crowd. So he departs

:19:22.:19:33.

without giving an ovation, but so, too, for Federer. You regard him as

:19:34.:19:43.

a contender here? Absolutely. It was the ideal start. He is serving at

:19:44.:19:48.

70% first serves, winning good advantage on first and second

:19:49.:19:52.

serves. He did not drop serve all afternoon. He will realise that

:19:53.:20:01.

appreciate that challenges are going to get tougher as he progresses

:20:02.:20:11.

throughout the fortnight. He is looking into the eyes of the people

:20:12.:20:15.

around him. Talk about his passion for the game.

:20:16.:20:29.

He may be a coat of the step slower, but the shot making is still

:20:30.:20:38.

glorious. Most definitely on this surface. When he's getting on the

:20:39.:20:41.

front foot and dictating with his serve and dominating with his

:20:42.:20:47.

forehand, he is still going to be a match for everyone. It will still be

:20:48.:20:55.

fantastic in ten days' time if we can have the four top seeds through

:20:56.:21:00.

to the men's semifinals. And he never seems to be in a hurry.

:21:01.:21:07.

They're signing virtually everyone's autograph.

:21:08.:21:16.

A very happy crowd here on Court One. They have seen the master at

:21:17.:21:22.

work. The hour and 33 minutes just flew

:21:23.:21:54.

by. He dropped just five games. Congratulations. An excellent

:21:55.:21:58.

performance, which would have given you a lot of pleasure? Yes, I'm very

:21:59.:22:03.

happy always getting through my first round. The grass is very green

:22:04.:22:10.

and slippery sometimes, so it is nice to get the win and I thought I

:22:11.:22:14.

played very well. Got a lot of breaks, served well and played some

:22:15.:22:19.

transition game coming to the net, so I'm happy. In the way it is the

:22:20.:22:23.

perfect performance for your first match here in 2014? Yes, you want to

:22:24.:22:31.

feel eager to play, motivate, inspired, and also wanting to not

:22:32.:22:38.

just win the first round, but not underestimating anybody but trying

:22:39.:22:41.

to win the tournament. That is why I'm here again, and getting the

:22:42.:22:44.

first one out of the way is good. You talk about him motivated and

:22:45.:22:49.

inspired. We talked about that the other day. As soon as he walked out,

:22:50.:22:53.

I suppose even you, although you have walked out here hundreds of

:22:54.:22:57.

times, it gives even you a lift? Have you met yes, and walking down

:22:58.:23:02.

the tunnel, I am very laid-back and casual. -- yes, walking down the

:23:03.:23:07.

tunnel, I am very laid-back and cashable. But there is that moment

:23:08.:23:13.

where it is like, OK, here we go, and you do feel some pressure. And

:23:14.:23:18.

thought on your opponent. A lovely character. The crowd liked how he

:23:19.:23:24.

died but he has won his last 12 matches, has not won a grandson. Do

:23:25.:23:30.

you feel a little bit sorry for him? -- he has not won a Grand Slam. I

:23:31.:23:38.

did not know his record, to be honest. I know he can serve-volleys

:23:39.:23:41.

on the grass and that is always nice to see. He did a good job forcing it

:23:42.:23:47.

tried to make plays but maybe he did not serve as big as maybe you have

:23:48.:23:52.

to days on the grass, to serve-volley consistently. The

:23:53.:23:55.

feeling sorry bit, honestly, I had a little bit in the juniors, when you

:23:56.:24:03.

think, the other guy is better than I am, he deserves it more. But that

:24:04.:24:08.

has all gone. I have put in my fair share of hard work, and you feel

:24:09.:24:14.

like you deserve it, always! You deserved it today. Thank you. SUE

:24:15.:24:20.

BARKER: The ultimate competitor. A perfect start the Roger. Just three

:24:21.:24:24.

men over the age of 30 have won Wimbledon. You would be very brave

:24:25.:24:31.

to bet against him this year with his Wimbledon record. Seven times,

:24:32.:24:36.

he has been the champion here. Gary mentioned poor old Paolo Lorenzo's

:24:37.:24:42.

record in Grand Slams -- Paolo Lorenzi. It is the second worst in

:24:43.:24:51.

Grand Slam history. Only a Costa Rican has a worse record. Federer is

:24:52.:24:59.

three and his great rival is over on Centre Court at the moment. They are

:25:00.:25:03.

in the same half of the draw this year, Rafael Nadal, and it is quite

:25:04.:25:09.

a struggle with a tricky opponent. He was down break points in the

:25:10.:25:13.

opening game. It is life over on BBC Two. Martin Kitson took a set of him

:25:14.:25:20.

over in Paris a couple of years ago. On Court Two, ground itch of Canada

:25:21.:25:27.

is having a great day. He is up against Matthew Ebdon of Australia.

:25:28.:25:38.

-- me last round itch. Heather Watson has just started her campaign

:25:39.:25:45.

out on Court three. She has got a tough match against a player just

:25:46.:25:50.

ranked seven places above her. So Heather in action against Ireland

:25:51.:25:58.

Tomljanovic of Croatia. -- Ajla Tomljanovic. A couple of results to

:25:59.:26:07.

bring you. Late in the is through. The champion here in 2002. Had a bit

:26:08.:26:13.

of a battle on his hands against his Polish opponent, but he won it in

:26:14.:26:17.

four to the delight of the Aussie fans on courtside. The former

:26:18.:26:26.

champion is through. You will need -- he will need to be at his best in

:26:27.:26:32.

the next round as well as he will face Jerzey Janowicz of Poland. He

:26:33.:26:38.

was taken in the distance by his Indian opponent, and won it 6-3 in

:26:39.:26:47.

the final set. We will be looking forward to Maria Sharapova walking

:26:48.:26:50.

out on Court One in a moment but first, a word about Roger Federer.

:26:51.:26:55.

Ultimate competitor, as I said. He will not feel sorry for his

:26:56.:27:00.

opponent, will he? Never. What a perfect opening-round match. He was

:27:01.:27:03.

able to play the style of tennis he wants to play. As he said, he was

:27:04.:27:07.

working on his transition quite a bit. That is what Edberg is trying

:27:08.:27:15.

to get him to do, come to net more. He played well and he will be happy

:27:16.:27:20.

with his first-round performance. Particularly with what happened last

:27:21.:27:25.

year. He wants to put the record straight, having lost, which was

:27:26.:27:31.

such a big shock. He does not underestimate anybody in the first

:27:32.:27:34.

round now. He had an amazing streak of Grand Slam finals will stop that

:27:35.:27:39.

came to an end and he does not want to give away too much in the early

:27:40.:27:45.

rounds. He will try to get through a bit more comfortably and quickly so

:27:46.:27:49.

he gets to the quarterfinal, semifinal stage with those reserves.

:27:50.:27:58.

And Rafael Nadal, a tricky opponent who has done well in other

:27:59.:28:01.

tournaments. He could do with an easier start, couldn't he? He lost

:28:02.:28:07.

in the second round and first round the last two times. He has a tough

:28:08.:28:16.

draw all the wealth through -- all the way through. Rafael Michelle

:28:17.:28:25.

came in and how he was talking, he said he is better this year --

:28:26.:28:29.

Nadal. He said that his Kudryavtseva is responding better. -- he said

:28:30.:28:33.

that his is responding better. -- he said

:28:34.:28:35.

that knee is responding better. If it is at all compromised, it is

:28:36.:28:39.

virtually impossible for him to play well. Such an unforgiving surface,

:28:40.:28:46.

the grass. We are looking forward to Maria Sharapova, up against the

:28:47.:28:49.

British wild card Sam Murray. We spoke to summary earlier and now she

:28:50.:28:55.

is with her very excited family. I'm joined by Sam Murray's family before

:28:56.:28:59.

they head into Court One. Nervous, I imagine. Dad, how are the nerves?

:29:00.:29:08.

Tilting up now. We have been waiting for this moment. We are about to go

:29:09.:29:14.

in, proud, excited and the nerves are starting to work. I caught up

:29:15.:29:19.

with some early on and she seemed cool and calm but I suppose it is

:29:20.:29:23.

always harder for the family. Yes, some seems to handle it well. -- she

:29:24.:29:31.

seems to handle it well. I hope she can relax on Court. When you hear

:29:32.:29:36.

that your daughter is playing Maria Sharapova, when you first hear that

:29:37.:29:41.

it must sound incredible. Yes, but it is a great opportunity. Really

:29:42.:29:48.

excited. How long have you been involved in her career? I suppose

:29:49.:29:51.

you have to do all the running around? Yes, we have transported her

:29:52.:30:01.

two places ever since we -- she was five. And what about you? I have

:30:02.:30:10.

watched her since he was five and transported her, too. We hope she

:30:11.:30:13.

will have a wonderful day. As long as she's happy. I just must point

:30:14.:30:19.

out, Andy Murray, there is an Andy Murray in the ranks, a slightly

:30:20.:30:23.

different Andy Murray to the one we are used to at Wimbledon. You are

:30:24.:30:29.

the uncle. Yes. I'm looking forward to the game. I spoke to my niece in

:30:30.:30:34.

the players' Lounge. She seems. I hope she placed her best and that is

:30:35.:30:41.

all we ask of her. We wish her all the best. I hope your nerves are OK.

:30:42.:30:51.

I bet her uncle Andy Murray gets a table whenever he wants one! Here

:30:52.:30:58.

comes Maria Sharapova and Sam. What a big moment for Sam. On Court

:30:59.:31:06.

against Maria Sharapova. She has won five Grand Slam 's, she is a savvy

:31:07.:31:13.

businesswoman as well. She has been launching a new project, a pop-up

:31:14.:31:19.

shop in Wimbledon Village. We sent our reporter to meet her.

:31:20.:31:39.

It has been ten years since you last won at Wimbledon. Does it feel like

:31:40.:31:47.

that long ago? It does feel like a long time ago. I don't member very

:31:48.:31:53.

often unless someone reminds me. When I look back, it seems so fresh

:31:54.:31:57.

on my mind, the moment of getting on my knees, it was an experience on

:31:58.:32:04.

its own. You do the same celebration now. Is it automatic? I'm not quite

:32:05.:32:11.

sure why I keep doing the same celebration. I just want to get done

:32:12.:32:16.

on my knees, you have played the last point and you won it. I always

:32:17.:32:22.

struggle with that because it is super awkward but I don't win as

:32:23.:32:28.

many matches as you do. Don't say that! It has been two weeks since

:32:29.:32:32.

you won in Paris. Congratulations. Does it feel weird that it is such a

:32:33.:32:40.

quick turnaround? It does, in a way. It describes EU have the two

:32:41.:32:44.

biggest tournaments so close together -- it is crazy that you

:32:45.:32:50.

have. You can take the confidence and hope to bring it to Wimbledon.

:32:51.:32:57.

But you only have a few days to celebrate. The mentality changes

:32:58.:33:01.

when you get to London. I am quite superstitious. I always go in the

:33:02.:33:06.

same shower and locker room. Next time I play you, I will take your

:33:07.:33:18.

shower! I don't mind. I can shower anywhere pretty much. I usually put

:33:19.:33:24.

my left shoe before my right, for some reason. I feel like you have

:33:25.:33:30.

more superstitions when you play. I used to do the hair thing. Only now

:33:31.:33:36.

that keeps thinking that I keep going that. -- only now that

:33:37.:33:49.

Djokovic. It will be our national TV now. OK, Novak, do you hear that?

:33:50.:34:01.

Are member talking to you about the Spice Girls. I have a good memory.

:34:02.:34:08.

-- I remember. Is that the kind of music you listen to before matches?

:34:09.:34:14.

I did when I was younger. What is your favourite song? Spice Up Your

:34:15.:34:26.

Life. I will be working for the BBC over Wimbledon. Are there any tips?

:34:27.:34:36.

Anything I should tell John McEnroe? Tell him everything you think, tell

:34:37.:34:42.

it as it is. Basically, I should abuse him? Please, you have got to

:34:43.:34:53.

do it. If you say so. We will have to put Laura back on court very

:34:54.:35:00.

soon. Lovely interview. Maria Sharapova, so relax, enjoy in the

:35:01.:35:05.

interview. Nice to hear from her. She is going to be looking again...

:35:06.:35:12.

Another player who has not done so well looking to come back. It is

:35:13.:35:17.

nice to see her do an interview when she is not straight off the court.

:35:18.:35:21.

You get a glimpse of her personality. It has been tough the

:35:22.:35:27.

last two years for her at Wimbledon. Another victory at the fringe this

:35:28.:35:31.

year. She said it is very tough for her. I think it is her arm. She has

:35:32.:35:36.

a bad shoulder. The balls are heavier here. It is tough to recover

:35:37.:35:44.

and be 100%. We will see how her campaign goes. The big rivalry with

:35:45.:35:49.

Serena Williams which has blossomed over the past couple of years. A lot

:35:50.:35:53.

of people would think that would be the final. They are the two

:35:54.:35:58.

favourites. They are in the same quarter two Grand Slams in a row.

:35:59.:36:04.

They work going to meet at Paris. Bruce Sharrock either did not play

:36:05.:36:08.

the second half of last year. She will get her ranking up this year --

:36:09.:36:13.

Maria Sharapova did not play the second half. What advice would you

:36:14.:36:21.

give to Sam Murray? You have got to embrace the moment. Sometimes

:36:22.:36:24.

players are completely overwhelmed and forget to play. She has got to

:36:25.:36:29.

keep it simple and remember to breathe. It can be overwhelming, the

:36:30.:36:34.

show courts. We wish Sam well and hope her family enjoyed as well.

:36:35.:36:41.

Thank you for dropping in the studio. We will just pop over to

:36:42.:36:45.

Centre Court because potentially a real shock. Rafael Nadal has dropped

:36:46.:36:50.

the opening set to Martin Klizan of Slovakia. That much is currently

:36:51.:36:56.

over on BBC Two. Rafa Nadal who lost early in the last two years in

:36:57.:37:05.

public in. Here we are on Court One for Maria Sharapova against Sam

:37:06.:37:09.

Murray. Nervous moments for some Murray. The

:37:10.:37:20.

woman who strides back to her seat now has been here many times -- for

:37:21.:37:29.

Sam Murray. A daunting task for Samantha Murray. If possible, a

:37:30.:37:35.

challenge to be enjoyed and savour as well. I think what an opportunity

:37:36.:37:42.

for Sam Murray. She is very hard working. She hits the ball well. She

:37:43.:37:46.

has played at university in the States. She has played a lot of

:37:47.:37:52.

matches there. It is just a matter of her hopefully hitting a couple of

:37:53.:37:57.

good shots early on in the opening games of this match. Otherwise,

:37:58.:38:01.

everything can go terribly wrong. You just need a little bit to give

:38:02.:38:14.

you some confidence. You find out a lot about yourself on days like

:38:15.:38:17.

this, whether you can rise to the occasion, whether you will wither

:38:18.:38:23.

away. Maria Sharapova is going to get us under way.

:38:24.:38:53.

Interesting. Did I hear you mention the server being the one thing we

:38:54.:39:06.

will watch for Maria? Only in tournaments in particular, she can

:39:07.:39:14.

serve a slew of doubles. She knows how to battle through that somehow.

:39:15.:39:25.

If anything were designed to let Sam Murray settle into a match, it was

:39:26.:39:31.

those opening two points. She just missed that but it was not

:39:32.:39:55.

a bad rally to get your strokes going. A big serve and she returned

:39:56.:39:58.

it quite well. We got used to seeing Maria struggle

:39:59.:40:42.

early in her matches at the French and even in Madrid in the final she

:40:43.:40:50.

was a set down before she won that. Three of her matches at the French,

:40:51.:40:52.

she was down a set. In other words, Sharapova tends to

:40:53.:41:07.

make life difficult for herself. You could see the toss was so low. This

:41:08.:41:14.

is her Achilles heel. The double faults she frozen. Strangely enough,

:41:15.:41:24.

it is not normally because her toss is too low. Often her toss is very

:41:25.:41:31.

high. -- the double faults she throws in.

:41:32.:41:41.

An opportunity, not a menacing serve either.

:41:42.:42:01.

Such a deliberate player, Sharapova. Takes all the time in the world and

:42:02.:42:10.

powers of concentration. Gathers herself for a moment before coming

:42:11.:42:18.

back to serve. I am sure she might get a warning at some stage, if not

:42:19.:42:23.

in this match. Sooner rather than later. Taking a bit too much time.

:42:24.:42:29.

They are trying to be somewhat stricter this year.

:42:30.:42:43.

Three double faults in her opening service game. Sets a dangerous tone

:42:44.:42:52.

for Sharapova. She tends to work them out of her system a little bit

:42:53.:42:58.

as the tournament goes on. She certainly goes for her second serve.

:42:59.:43:02.

There are merits to that thought process. But also risks. You don't

:43:03.:43:11.

want to throw in an easy second serve, go for a big one and you risk

:43:12.:43:16.

missing it. You know that against players like Serena Williams, they

:43:17.:43:20.

gobble up the second serve if it is not full tilt.

:43:21.:43:34.

As with so many players, it is the toss that is the problem rather than

:43:35.:43:38.

the racket. Gasped of admiration from the crowd.

:43:39.:44:00.

The power of the return. That is a pleasure to watch. So often when

:44:01.:44:05.

players are hitting with all of their velocity, they are unable to

:44:06.:44:09.

change it and then hit a little delicate shot. Beautiful

:44:10.:44:10.

combination. Might have woken Maria up, the big

:44:11.:44:29.

blasted return on the previous point.

:44:30.:44:43.

She had her chances there Sam Murray. But Sharapova holds

:44:44.:44:53.

eventually. I think we highlighted it beforehand, her serve, Sharapova.

:44:54.:45:05.

Again, you look further down, they were talking beforehand about

:45:06.:45:09.

possible quarterfinal meeting with Serena Williams. Looking a long way

:45:10.:45:14.

ahead. There are certainly elements of her game she would need to

:45:15.:45:18.

tighten up. Certainly the top half of the draw seems to be very much

:45:19.:45:26.

the tougher of the two halves. I regret that as they tweak the men's

:45:27.:45:33.

seeding a bit, they could not tweak the seedings and shift to wrap a

:45:34.:45:38.

bit. If she had done better last year they might have.

:45:39.:45:45.

They are so strict about colour. I am amazed they let her have black

:45:46.:45:49.

ankle supports. They have cracked down on any little

:45:50.:46:13.

flashes of non-white. I suppose ankle supports might come under

:46:14.:46:17.

medical clothing and be exempt. Sam Murray trains at the LTA

:46:18.:46:37.

training centre in Bath. Challenging that, I think, Sam

:46:38.:46:48.

Murray. Just looking. The return comes back so quickly

:46:49.:47:36.

these days. You really have to be on your marks after you have hit your

:47:37.:47:42.

serve. The quality of returning is stupendous everywhere.

:47:43.:48:01.

Every service game for Sam Murray is going to be a battle of survival.

:48:02.:48:11.

Survives very well. Good holes. -- good hold. To hear the noise...

:48:12.:48:24.

APPLAUSE What a lift it gives you. Perhaps

:48:25.:48:35.

she is daunted by it. I would think she would be totally lifted by it.

:48:36.:48:40.

Half of playing well is getting the adrenaline going.

:48:41.:49:01.

That second serve of Maria, she goes pretty full tilt at it, but it has a

:49:02.:49:13.

combination of spin in it. Perhaps for grass shears trying to use a bit

:49:14.:49:18.

more slice bring it into the body -- perhaps for grass she is trying.

:49:19.:49:37.

Good to hear that Sharapova's voice is in fine working order! I would

:49:38.:49:47.

say that as a matter of opinion. Well, not exactly what you would

:49:48.:50:15.

call the traditional sort of approach shot to come in behind.

:50:16.:50:22.

Sharapova really punished for that. Challenge immediately from

:50:23.:50:52.

Sharapova. You doubt if she is going to get any joy, but it was very

:50:53.:50:54.

close. UMPIRE: Sharrock -- Sharapova has

:50:55.:51:03.

two challenges remaining. Taking her half chance. Just a

:51:04.:52:04.

terrific return of serve. She anticipated that, went right after

:52:05.:52:07.

it correctly. Break point. Lovely shot. That is the best shot

:52:08.:52:40.

she has had so far. She appreciated that herself. A little cry of, come

:52:41.:52:47.

on! It was a pretty deep, good return. She had to get it exactly

:52:48.:52:52.

right. Almost throwing her whole body into that shot.

:52:53.:52:59.

In the end, that is probably the serve that Maria will probably

:53:00.:53:33.

utilise more, out wide, keeping it low.

:53:34.:53:51.

It is a hold again for the number five seed. Again, if you were to

:53:52.:54:06.

offer some encouragement to Sam Murray, there have been

:54:07.:54:12.

opportunities. Don't be afraid. They will come again as well. We talked

:54:13.:54:18.

about the time that Sharapova had off towards the end of last year

:54:19.:54:23.

with a shoulder injury and feels she took a long time to come back and

:54:24.:54:27.

build up the strength in her shoulder. It is only now she is

:54:28.:54:34.

getting back to full capacity. In interviews, she has said she had to

:54:35.:54:38.

put up with a lot of poor results in the period she was coming back

:54:39.:54:42.

because she just was not fit. She had trouble still with her shoulder.

:54:43.:54:47.

She said that it was not much fun, having to put up with losing

:54:48.:54:57.

matches. But she stuck it out. There are only two players in my mind to

:54:58.:55:03.

have concentration like Sharapova has. One on the mend's side and her

:55:04.:55:09.

on the women's side. It is now dial Billy Budd -- it is Nadal who

:55:10.:55:18.

concentrates on every single point. She has incredible concentration and

:55:19.:55:22.

determination. People coming back in after taking a break, it is still

:55:23.:55:28.

hot. This will be a full Court One within a few games. Samantha Murray

:55:29.:55:33.

to serve. Highways think the second service

:55:34.:55:45.

game when you are the underdog is the most difficult. You put all of

:55:46.:55:50.

your resources into the first service game and you are so happy to

:55:51.:55:54.

win it and there is a tendency to relax.

:55:55.:56:37.

That was your fault, Andrew! Most things are.

:56:38.:57:24.

downloader for that ball and that probably is the biggest challenge

:57:25.:57:36.

for her. -- to get down lower. She is so tall.

:57:37.:57:49.

She did not get that. Maybe she thinks she did. Let us see if she

:57:50.:58:05.

made a long arm. Maybe she did! Simultaneous racket". Great effort.

:58:06.:58:18.

If Samantha Murray cannot close out this service game, she will regret

:58:19.:58:31.

that volley at the net. It was hard to read that it came back without

:58:32.:58:33.

hitting the ground twice. There it is. Sharapova has the

:58:34.:00:24.

break. could really have been forgiven to

:00:25.:00:55.

thinking that Maria had given that ball up. She has to re-focus now.

:00:56.:01:08.

Sharapova is beginning to time her serve.

:01:09.:02:40.

She knows it's only really been her big, hard shots that have won her

:02:41.:02:41.

points. An ace and Sharapova's serve seems

:02:42.:02:57.

to be working well now. She's a break up. SUE BARKER: SO MARIA

:02:58.:03:09.

SHARAPOVA COMFORTABLY in front in this match. Heather Watson is a set

:03:10.:03:16.

up, and a break up against Tomljanovic. If you want to watch

:03:17.:03:21.

that match, it is live on the red button.

:03:22.:03:27.

On Centre Court, well drama, Rafael Nadal is up against Martin Klizan.

:03:28.:03:32.

He's lost the opening set 6-4. He's lost a break point there. He's

:03:33.:03:35.

trying to fight his way back into this match. The world number one in

:03:36.:03:40.

real trouble on Centre Court. That's live on BBC Two. Here on one, we're

:03:41.:03:43.

heading back to Court No 1. Sharapova collecting herself. It all

:03:44.:03:57.

looks good for the number five seed at the moment. Just that concern for

:03:58.:04:04.

Sam Murray that once Sharapova begins to get going on all

:04:05.:04:08.

cylinders, she'll be hard to live with.

:04:09.:04:28.

More and more spectators are coming into court one.

:04:29.:05:00.

I'd rather that players got rewarded financially by the prize money they

:05:01.:05:31.

get at Wimbledon, even if they lose. Good serve.

:05:32.:05:38.

I'd rather see them get prize money than get given money without playing

:05:39.:05:43.

matches. I'm all in favour of the wild cards.

:05:44.:05:53.

That came through fast! It's hard to stop the panic coming

:05:54.:06:29.

in. The second serve devoured by

:06:30.:06:55.

Sharapova. She has a double break now, romping to this set.

:06:56.:07:00.

This is where it comes into your head, the panic. You don't want to

:07:01.:07:06.

be gobbled up in a match like. This you want to make a good fist of it.

:07:07.:07:08.

You know the goodwill is with you. Two errors like that from Sharapova

:07:09.:07:31.

would encourage her. Sam Murray couldn't be faulted

:07:32.:09:18.

there. Sharapova has some wonderful shots in her lockier.

:09:19.:09:28.

Sharapova is hitting the ball very well and she's moving very well. She

:09:29.:09:46.

looks in great shape. Certainly going for her shots, Sam

:09:47.:11:15.

Murray. I don't think she has any option. If she plays carefully and

:11:16.:11:21.

keeps the ball in, it gets demolished by Maria.

:11:22.:11:34.

Good Once again shot. Saved by Murray.

:11:35.:12:20.

She would love this set not to be 6-1. She would love to add another

:12:21.:12:31.

game to her collection here. A chance to get a break back.

:12:32.:12:46.

It's not to be. Maria Sharapova must have an internal clock as well. 25

:12:47.:12:58.

seconds is the maximum they're allowed and it's always 23, 24.

:12:59.:13:08.

It's funny you say that, because when she's been told that she's

:13:09.:13:15.

taking too long and given a semi-warning, she says, "How many

:13:16.:13:18.

seconds was that? And she has the set now, Maria

:13:19.:13:40.

Sharapova. The number five seed against the British wildcard Sam

:13:41.:13:46.

Murray. Sue Barker: We will be back with this match in a moment. Let's

:13:47.:13:50.

take you around the grounds and on Centre Court, Rafael Nadal is

:13:51.:13:53.

fighting back like the great champion he is. He's finding a way

:13:54.:13:57.

to win, finding his way back into this match against Martin Klizan,

:13:58.:14:03.

who took the first set 6-4. Rava is -- Rafa is up a break. That's live

:14:04.:14:08.

on BBC Two. On court three, heather Watson going

:14:09.:14:13.

well, 6-3, now 5-1, two breaks of serve. Looks like that's 5-2 now.

:14:14.:14:20.

She'll coming out to serve for the match in a moment on court three.

:14:21.:14:27.

Watch that live on the red button. On court two, Raonic is winning

:14:28.:14:51.

against Matthew Ebden Mad son Keyes is through. -- Key ises through. A

:14:52.:15:01.

very talented player. She's through 6-3, 6-3. Back we go to court one.

:15:02.:15:06.

What's to happen here for Virginia to come back, she's probably not

:15:07.:15:13.

going to win the match, but she'd love to compete. What does she have

:15:14.:15:18.

to do better? It's very close indeed. She just has to be able to

:15:19.:15:21.

focus on one point at a time. First serve percentage is a little

:15:22.:15:50.

bit low, just over 50%. She's got a zbre first serve. -- she's got a

:15:51.:15:56.

very good first serve. When you play somebody with

:15:57.:16:10.

concentration as good as Sharapova, you've got to try to match them in

:16:11.:16:13.

that area. She's just rushing it a little bit

:16:14.:16:28.

now. Sharapova looking at the ideal start

:16:29.:17:35.

to this second set. There is the break for Maria

:17:36.:18:04.

Sharapova. She is a set up and a break up. Sharapova is in total

:18:05.:18:13.

control. Sue Barker: We'll be back on court one in a moment. On Court

:18:14.:18:18.

Three, Heather Watson has come out to serve for the match. She's won it

:18:19.:18:23.

in some style. This big serve forcing the error from her opponent.

:18:24.:18:27.

Watson is through to the second round here at Wimbledon. A big smile

:18:28.:18:37.

from Heather, the British number one and a victory for her. Well done,

:18:38.:18:41.

Heather. That's what's been happening out on court three. Let's

:18:42.:18:43.

go back now to Court One. Maria Sharapova is perfectly

:18:44.:18:50.

comfortable in this environment. You could just see the confidence

:18:51.:19:20.

beginning to ebb away from Sam Murray.

:19:21.:19:45.

You certainly don't get any tounts experiment, up know -- opportunities

:19:46.:19:50.

to experiment, maybe I should go for a big return or a bit of a different

:19:51.:19:54.

one. She doesn't give you any breathing space.

:19:55.:20:09.

She hung with Sharapova as long as she could, but vergely the class of

:20:10.:22:14.

Sharapova tells. We were talking that it was a decade ago that she

:22:15.:22:18.

won as a 17-year-old. You never would have thought that she wouldn't

:22:19.:22:22.

win Wimbledon again. It was incredible that match when she

:22:23.:22:24.

played with such confidence on Centre Court in the final.

:22:25.:22:48.

There's only six months difference in age between these two.

:22:49.:23:21.

She steps up the volume and the power. You fear for Samantha Murray

:23:22.:23:27.

now. She got away with a drop shot very

:23:28.:24:11.

early in the match, but that was a little bit a desperation shot.

:24:12.:24:20.

Easily taken by Sharapova. She has the double break in the second set.

:24:21.:24:26.

It was only a matter of time. Scenes from the match and a day that

:24:27.:24:54.

Sam Murray would have dearly loved to have enjoyed. I'm sure she's

:24:55.:24:57.

still enjoying the experience, if that's possible when you're on the

:24:58.:25:00.

end of a sound beating, at the moment. When you see the draw and

:25:01.:25:05.

are not a particularly experienced player, at the top level of the

:25:06.:25:11.

game, you see that have you to play, I would say Sharapova or Serena or

:25:12.:25:19.

Venus, your heart would sink, because those players, including

:25:20.:25:24.

Maria, are the players who can just demolish you. If you see the draw

:25:25.:25:29.

and you have a player who's 20th or 30th in the world, you know you have

:25:30.:25:34.

a whisper of a chance. With the very top players, even in your wildest

:25:35.:25:39.

dreams it's highly unlikely. It's these big hitters as well.

:25:40.:25:44.

Looking at the record of Maria Sharapova, last 41 first-round

:25:45.:25:49.

matches and slams, she's only lost once.

:25:50.:26:18.

I don't think I can fault Sam Murray on her choice of shots. But it's

:26:19.:26:27.

difficult to execute. She wants to play aggressively.

:26:28.:26:44.

If only she could tie a few of those together.

:26:45.:27:08.

I would give the umpire a second look on that serve. It was very

:27:09.:27:34.

close to the line. That's what Sam Murray has to do,

:27:35.:27:52.

take the second-serve chances. She took that one well.

:27:53.:28:26.

Like all the best players, you can see the reaction to this shot that

:28:27.:28:33.

she's not one for easing up in any way.

:28:34.:28:48.

into the open court. That was a lovely Sarah. Maria Sarah -- Maria

:28:49.:28:55.

Sharapova getting a little bit more adventurous with her serve. She is

:28:56.:29:09.

tremendously focused and determined. Samantha Murray is now serving.

:29:10.:29:26.

That was just too bad. I have to say that Samantha Murray seems to have

:29:27.:29:36.

all the ingredients to be ranked a lot higher than the position she is

:29:37.:29:41.

currently in. But that is one of the wings that happens. Unless you get

:29:42.:29:49.

good draws and get a lot of winds, your ranking can slide down.

:29:50.:30:29.

That was good play, forceful play by some anthem array. -- Samantha Power

:30:30.:30:47.

re-. It is a proud day but very hard to

:30:48.:31:36.

watch sometimes. That was so on there. It was such a good service.

:31:37.:31:47.

Maria Sharapova just times at absolutely perfectly. But absolutely

:31:48.:32:02.

brilliant. This is break point. Samantha Murray will be absolutely

:32:03.:32:04.

mortified if she does not get a game in this set. She does not have one

:32:05.:32:11.

yet. Another break for Maria Sharapova. She will serve very

:32:12.:32:23.

shortly for the match. There will be a debate, I am sure, about the

:32:24.:32:31.

wildcards. The LTA said they were not going to go beyond a certain

:32:32.:32:41.

ranking this year. 247th in the world, people will save why are they

:32:42.:32:44.

getting an invitation to the first round of the grand slam tournament?

:32:45.:33:00.

I know. But what can you say? If you think about the draw being 128

:33:01.:33:14.

players... Some joy came up in the arena beakers Heather Watson's wind

:33:15.:33:27.

came up on the screen. -- because. I think 108 players get in and then

:33:28.:33:30.

there is a bunch of wildcards and qualifiers. The ranking is quite low

:33:31.:33:38.

in order to get in. Wildcards in the past have made their mark and scored

:33:39.:33:45.

some famous victories. I do not think it is going to be this way

:33:46.:33:48.

today. Maria Sharapova serving for the match.

:33:49.:34:21.

Well done! Tremendous stuff. She has hit a lot of good shots here to win

:34:22.:34:37.

the point and she hung in so well. A great serve and a lovely follow

:34:38.:35:04.

up. You mentioned before that it is surprising that Maria Sharapova had

:35:05.:35:08.

not won more Grand Slams because she beats virtually everybody. She has a

:35:09.:35:15.

terrible record against Serena Williams. Unfortunately, Serena

:35:16.:35:21.

Williams is in the same quarter as her.

:35:22.:36:05.

things that she will cling to from this match and for encouragement.

:36:06.:36:26.

The crowd are willing Samantha Murray on. But Maria Sharapova is

:36:27.:36:38.

not in the habit of showing mercy. Just moments away from her place in

:36:39.:36:40.

the second round. Closer still. A Swiss player awaits

:36:41.:36:56.

in the next round. And she takes the match with an ace.

:36:57.:37:28.

The number five seed is through. Hopefully it will still be a day for

:37:29.:37:34.

Samantha Murray to remember. Maria Sharapova showed a dominant

:37:35.:37:40.

performance. She starts her bid for a second Wimbledon title. It was a

:37:41.:37:50.

first-class performance. She struggled with her service action a

:37:51.:37:57.

little. Other than that, she was the personification of efficiency. She

:37:58.:38:04.

has practised quite a bit on the grass courts. It looks as if she is

:38:05.:38:12.

in fantastic shape. A word for some anthem Murray. We knew it was going

:38:13.:38:17.

to be tough work for her. -- Samantha Murray. It is very, very

:38:18.:38:31.

hard to play against this woman. Maria Sharapova looks in great

:38:32.:38:40.

shape. She looks very well and full of confidence. Arguably, she is the

:38:41.:38:48.

most famous female athlete in the world and she carries herself very

:38:49.:38:51.

well. She comes up with great performances. She is signing some

:38:52.:38:58.

autographs. She will have some rest tomorrow. She will probably have a

:38:59.:39:06.

fourth-round meeting with Angelique Kerber. It is a tough draw for her.

:39:07.:39:15.

But she is off to a great start. That match was completed in 58

:39:16.:39:26.

minutes. It was very much one-way traffic. The score 6-1, 6-0. SUE

:39:27.:39:48.

BARKER: well done to Maria Sharapova but the score does not reflect the

:39:49.:39:56.

match. Maria Sharapova on her way. She was disappointed with her

:39:57.:40:00.

performance in Wimbledon last year but she is on her way and her

:40:01.:40:04.

campaign has started. The number five seed is safely through. Let's

:40:05.:40:19.

show you some other results today. Richard Gasquet winning his match.

:40:20.:40:38.

in straight sets. He is the eighth seed in these championships.

:40:39.:40:53.

This is the match out on Court number three. A British wildcard.

:40:54.:41:06.

We will keep an eye on that match and that match is on the red button.

:41:07.:41:17.

We are going to join the match on Centre Court. Rafael Nadal is on

:41:18.:41:29.

court. It is the match of the left-handed players. We can join our

:41:30.:41:36.

commentating team of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming.

:41:37.:41:51.

That looked good to me. Rafael Nadal is going to challenge that. It

:41:52.:41:59.

looked as if it was perfectly placed.

:42:00.:42:36.

You would have to say that was not a great game from the two-time

:42:37.:42:42.

Wimbledon champion. Rafael Nadal was way off the court

:42:43.:43:44.

there. It was a very tough shot to execute.

:43:45.:45:50.

We will not write this man off just yet. He has had some great results.

:45:51.:46:13.

He has gone totally to with some excellent players. He is being

:46:14.:46:30.

coached by a great coach and he has a fitness coach as well. He has a

:46:31.:46:42.

very tall frame. He can pack a wonderful punch. He times the ball

:46:43.:46:47.

exceptionally well. This is interesting. If Rafael Nadal wins

:46:48.:47:00.

this match 6-3 or 6-4, it will benefit his opponent. But if he can

:47:01.:47:07.

break back, it would be a huge lift for him. He could steal this and

:47:08.:47:12.

that would be absolutely amazing. People are just filtering back into

:47:13.:47:43.

the arena. It is very hot in here indeed.

:47:44.:48:09.

PETER FLEMING: that was an impressive shot.

:48:10.:48:23.

He was expecting that to come very deep.

:48:24.:48:47.

This match has been going on for two hours now. There was a 45 minute

:48:48.:48:54.

warm up beforehand! John McEnroe making the point about

:48:55.:49:15.

watching Rafael Nadal. I would urge anyone to go and watch these guys

:49:16.:49:22.

crack this. He looks as if he is chopping down trees. UMPIRE: new

:49:23.:49:45.

balls, please. We have never witnessed anyone with

:49:46.:49:50.

the speed on the racket head like this man, Rafael Nadal. The rackets

:49:51.:49:57.

are lighter than perhaps they have ever been. The grip on the racket is

:49:58.:50:03.

smaller. You feel as if you can wrap your hands around it. This is a

:50:04.:50:11.

commentary box full of continental grips! What is this new thing,

:50:12.:50:13.

top-spin? He has got those new tennis balls so

:50:14.:51:42.

he has that extra velocity. It is a great opportunity for him to get

:51:43.:51:46.

that second break he needs to get back in this set.

:51:47.:52:45.

He is keeping a close in the second set. Just one break of serve so far.

:52:46.:52:55.

Let's try and blind you with science. We have been talking about

:52:56.:53:01.

this new top-spin thing and we have some graphics here. This is

:53:02.:53:10.

revolutions per minute. Rafael Nadal on the right-hand side at the top.

:53:11.:53:31.

He hits more top-spin by 30 or 40%. Would you know what the all-time

:53:32.:53:48.

high is? You do the mathematics. Let's not! Mathematics was my best

:53:49.:53:58.

subject! When you watch Rafael Nadal up close. He hits the ball so

:53:59.:54:06.

violently. It is a miracle that he hits so many forehand shots as

:54:07.:54:09.

cleanly as he doors, especially on grass. -- as cleanly as he doors.

:54:10.:54:33.

The grass courts are definitely much slower than they used to be. A much

:54:34.:54:38.

truer bouncers well. That was a bad miss. That was a bad

:54:39.:55:05.

bounce. He did not adapt to that. It is amazing. That is one of the first

:55:06.:55:08.

bad bounces of the match. How grass court tennis has changed.

:55:09.:55:30.

There has only been one serve and volley point in this match. That

:55:31.:55:33.

many? This is a great effort on behalf of

:55:34.:56:28.

the player from Slovakia. He could have let this set goal just as

:56:29.:56:34.

easily. He is quietly trying to find a way back into this match. -- let

:56:35.:56:39.

this set slip. Expect the unexpected. Rafael Nadal

:56:40.:57:17.

could easily have left one of those balls. I thought it was going out.

:57:18.:57:30.

He headed. -- he hit it. Look at what he did with that drop volley.

:57:31.:57:33.

That was a very dubious decision. That was it big point. -- a big

:57:34.:58:06.

point. That is a great way to put it. He looks weary. These Slovakian

:58:07.:58:16.

player is not very well conditioned and it is showing at this point in

:58:17.:58:22.

the match. -- these Slovakian player.

:58:23.:59:41.

On one of -- on one occasion when they played in Paris, it was quite a

:59:42.:59:54.

similar scenario. And that all could win this quite easily. -- Rafael

:59:55.:59:57.

Nadal. John, that's spooky. One break,

:59:58.:00:12.

fourth set, 6-3. I think it's two sets to one. Ball

:00:13.:00:48.

was called out. There is a challenge.

:00:49.:00:54.

Everybody seems to be settling, moving. Everyone's off to get a cup

:00:55.:01:02.

of tea and go to the loo because it is two sets. SUE BARKER two sets to

:01:03.:01:13.

one, Rafa beginning to take control on Centre Court. We're back there in

:01:14.:01:21.

a moment. On Court 3, Dan Smethhurst has had a couple of break points

:01:22.:01:27.

against John Isner in this game. If you want to watch that match, it's

:01:28.:01:34.

on the red button. On court one, Bouchard is live on

:01:35.:01:46.

BBC Two. That's just getting under way.

:01:47.:01:52.

On court 12, Lopez, who's had a wonderful summer on grass, finalist

:01:53.:01:56.

at Queen's, the winner at Eastbourne, he is 2-0 up, and 3-4 in

:01:57.:02:03.

the third set. Follow that match online.

:02:04.:02:33.

Serena loves the big occasions. She loves Centre Court. She may be on

:02:34.:02:45.

quite soon. She's taking on Anna Tatishvili of the United States.

:02:46.:02:48.

That's still to come. Let's rejoin this match at the start of the

:02:49.:02:54.

fourth set. It's definitely not easy, when you

:02:55.:02:58.

have to wait as Serena Williams is at the moment and Anna Tatishvili, a

:02:59.:03:02.

big moment for her. You don't know what's going on. You're following a

:03:03.:03:07.

men's match that could go five sets, may last five hours, it's difficult

:03:08.:03:11.

to prepare. Tennis is one of the only sports like that. JOHN MCENROE:

:03:12.:03:23.

There should be more time on court. That makes it trickier. Roger

:03:24.:03:28.

Federer won in one hour and 31 minutes, somewhere in that

:03:29.:03:31.

neighbourhood. That's as quickly as it can happen. But this easily could

:03:32.:03:37.

go, not easily, but it could potentially go a couple more hours.

:03:38.:03:46.

Imagine, if you followed the John Isner Nicholas N -- Mahut match! I

:03:47.:03:53.

was thinking back to super Saturday in 1984. I was the last match on

:03:54.:04:01.

that evening. I was in the stands! 11. 20 you finished! Final the next

:04:02.:04:09.

day? Yes, thankfully now in the US Open, finally, just a couple years

:04:10.:04:12.

ago, they finally took a day off. It took about 35 years, but they

:04:13.:04:16.

finally get the two players, the finalists, a chance to recuperate. A

:04:17.:04:23.

Monday finish? This year. Next year it's a Sunday finish, but Friday

:04:24.:04:28.

semifinal. Big changes Hallelujah. To the calendar here next year. The

:04:29.:04:35.

French Open winner will have three weeks between instead of the two.

:04:36.:04:41.

Wimbledon is moving back a week. Great news for this guy, who is

:04:42.:04:44.

always winning the French. Give him a chance to celebrate and rest for a

:04:45.:04:49.

week, start off, play an event, a week later, not a couple days later.

:04:50.:05:12.

Hugh do you defend -- how do you defend that shot? That's

:05:13.:05:20.

unbelievable. The only way would be to go for the return.

:05:21.:06:29.

That's just what he wanted there, a quick service game, put the pressure

:06:30.:06:36.

right back on Klizan, who is three in three lifetime, best of five.

:06:37.:06:42.

He's never come back from even a two sets to one deficit in his career.

:06:43.:06:49.

Really? Not even in Davis Cup? He was two sets to one up in all three

:06:50.:06:57.

matches that he won in five. He's going into unknown territory

:06:58.:07:05.

against the greatest, if not the greatest competitor in tennis

:07:06.:07:08.

history, then right up there in sports history.

:07:09.:07:09.

Any sport. first-serve percentage dropping, as

:07:10.:08:56.

this match has gone on, getting desperate.

:08:57.:09:35.

He's winning half the points that they're playing when he misses his

:09:36.:09:40.

first serve. He's trading from the back of the court pretty well.

:09:41.:09:48.

People might win 60% of the points on their first serve against Nadal,

:09:49.:10:12.

when they get their second serve in, he will punish you. On clay, his

:10:13.:10:15.

opponents win 30% or so. APPLAUSE

:10:16.:11:04.

That is a well deserved round of applause for both these guys. That

:11:05.:11:08.

was the sort of point Klizan was playing in the first set. Can he put

:11:09.:11:11.

a few together here? That was close. It looked like it

:11:12.:11:36.

caught It must something. Have hit the service line. That's why he

:11:37.:11:42.

didn't challenge. Also why he didn't make contact.

:11:43.:12:44.

Nadal's confidence is growing as this match has gone on, hard earned,

:12:45.:12:49.

well done. It's a strong hold. If he gets

:12:50.:13:04.

through this match, it will certainly prepare him for the rest

:13:05.:13:08.

of the tournament. This one is a long way from over.

:13:09.:13:16.

SUE BARKER: If he gets through, it will be interesting for us, because

:13:17.:13:26.

he will face Lukas Rosol, who has won in four sets.

:13:27.:13:32.

It could be a repeat of that match two years ago, with Rosol on his

:13:33.:13:39.

Wimbledon debut producing relentless ground strokes, which put Rafael

:13:40.:13:42.

Nadal out of the championships. That will be one to look forward to.

:13:43.:13:47.

Rosol is through. Rafa still with work to do.

:13:48.:13:56.

ANDREW CASTLE: He does have some work to do here, 5pm on a sunny

:13:57.:14:04.

Tuesday. Dimitrov in great form yesterday. Federer today. Djokovic

:14:05.:14:09.

was superb. But there is something to be said, Peter, for having a

:14:10.:14:14.

match and one of the star names to play themselves in, especially Rafa

:14:15.:14:18.

with the French Open and everything else. PETER FLEMING: I would have

:14:19.:14:23.

thought so. Rafa wasn't feeling that great, we heard rumours. He was

:14:24.:14:27.

limping around the other day. He looks pretty good today, moving

:14:28.:14:32.

well. I don't know. I just think because he hasn't won many grass

:14:33.:14:36.

court matches that this is a great bonus for him. To come through a

:14:37.:14:42.

tight one will give him a lot of confidence early on.

:14:43.:14:54.

You assume that he's going to glide through this but Klizan hitting the

:14:55.:15:02.

ball beautifully. UMPIRE: Mr Klizan challenging

:15:03.:15:24.

theical. Right baseline, ball was called in.

:15:25.:15:50.

Shaky looking there and a good look at that backhand, went for the

:15:51.:15:55.

tougher shot up the line. That's the second time he's done

:15:56.:16:36.

that! I'm going to stand up in the commentators' box and applaud that!

:16:37.:16:40.

Oh, my goodness. That is way too good. Look at this:

:16:41.:16:46.

He also does a pirouette to go with it. Doesn't he get dizzy when he

:16:47.:16:50.

does that. Unbelievable. The kick serve really kicks and then

:16:51.:17:25.

the spin on the far end that Klizan had to deal with. A premium on foot

:17:26.:17:27.

work. There's the break. That really could

:17:28.:17:43.

be telling. They're going to have quite a few

:17:44.:18:00.

points where they can choose from for the highlight roll tonight for

:18:01.:18:04.

Rafael Nadal. You talk about finding a way back into a match. This is

:18:05.:18:15.

will and desire at its best. He's just broken Klizan.

:18:16.:18:19.

Mentally. He is going to turn the screw now.

:18:20.:18:43.

He's going to make Klizan suffer. He sees the finish line and he is

:18:44.:19:02.

guns blazing right now. I didn't see Klizan's string break, but he's

:19:03.:19:03.

looking to change something. It's unusual for Rafael Nadal to be

:19:04.:19:17.

held up. Normally it's the other way round.

:19:18.:20:01.

In the old days that would have been a backhand. In the tram lines

:20:02.:20:10.

hitting forehands. Backhand slice. You wonder, is it possible to hit it

:20:11.:21:07.

harder than this? I mean physically. Probably not possible to swing

:21:08.:21:08.

harder. So, of all the numbers and all the

:21:09.:21:53.

stats that get crunched and put on bits of paper and the rest of, it I

:21:54.:21:58.

suppose, the most jaw-dropping statistic on Nadal will always have

:21:59.:22:03.

to be the French Open. To play the French Open, which is on clay, best

:22:04.:22:07.

of five sets, the clay court championship of the world, to win it

:22:08.:22:12.

nine times out of ten that you play it - I mean, six or seven years ago,

:22:13.:22:17.

we were saying he could win ten of these or a dozen. I was fortunate

:22:18.:22:24.

enough to be around in the era of BjornBorg, he played the French Open

:22:25.:22:28.

eight times and won it six. He lost to one guy, who beat his twice. His

:22:29.:22:34.

career record at the French was 48 and two. I thought that was

:22:35.:22:39.

unbelievable, which it is. It is. To think that this guy seven times, 66

:22:40.:22:51.

and one. 66 and one at the French? Bjorn achieved the French-Wimbledon

:22:52.:22:54.

double three times. Nadal has done it twice. He could do it again.

:22:55.:23:07.

He's tied right now with peat -- Pete Is he Sampras. Your favourite

:23:08.:23:11.

this week? I picked Djokovic. But I tell you something, it is truly a

:23:12.:23:16.

pleasure to watch this guy play. I hope they are all in the second

:23:17.:23:18.

week. He sure needed that. John, early on

:23:19.:25:01.

in a major, did you like to play tough matches like this? No. So two,

:25:02.:25:09.

two and two would have been OK? Yeah, OK. The stress level is high

:25:10.:25:14.

as you come out. You want to get your feet, well feet wet is the

:25:15.:25:18.

term. You know you don't actually want to get in too big a. If you

:25:19.:25:25.

come through one it's a major bonus. If you do. If you're not an

:25:26.:25:27.

emotional wreck. That counts me out. week and talking about grand slams,

:25:28.:26:16.

Martin Klizan hasn't gone away entirely yet.

:26:17.:26:41.

Absolutely suffocating when you play him, you have no chance whatsoever

:26:42.:26:52.

to relax. That was a pretty good Did you return. Ever hit with him? Not

:26:53.:26:55.

with Martin no. Oh, Rafa, once. I'm a lefty, it didn't matter to

:26:56.:27:08.

him. That's frustrating for any player,

:27:09.:28:16.

when you have the point one, the guy's guessed wrong and you miss

:28:17.:28:22.

that which was relatively straightforward.

:28:23.:28:40.

Shuch a good shot. -- such a good shot. It's incredible. It is.

:28:41.:28:51.

It's just laser-like into the corner. It's dipping, it's fast.

:28:52.:28:53.

It's difficult to read. firmly played. Considering the lack

:28:54.:29:40.

of success he has had with that lately, that was very nicely done.

:29:41.:29:58.

UMPIRE: time violation, rewarding, Rafael Nadal. -- warning.

:29:59.:30:11.

Perhaps it did affect him. He did not make any eye contact with the

:30:12.:30:22.

umpire. He is an umpire that takes no nonsense. This match has been

:30:23.:30:28.

going for over two hours now. Perhaps that was the straw that

:30:29.:30:49.

broke the camels back. Enough is enough.

:30:50.:31:19.

I wonder if Rafael Nadal will look over at the umpire. After that time

:31:20.:31:36.

violation, he wrapped that all around the frame. If he was angry.

:31:37.:31:42.

--, he did not show it. I totally disagree. It is not the first time

:31:43.:31:50.

that he has gone over 20 seconds. We do not know about. -- we do not know

:31:51.:32:00.

that. It seems to have come out of nowhere. The umpire should say to

:32:01.:32:08.

him that he was getting close and he should have warned him initially. In

:32:09.:32:20.

Grand Slam play, it is 20 seconds. Ivan Dodig was 25? It is 20. I

:32:21.:32:38.

thought. It is important. It is the spirit of the code. I hope it is not

:32:39.:32:46.

the reason why Rafael Nadal lost his serve. But we must give his opponent

:32:47.:32:51.

credit that he is still out there and still working very hard. It

:32:52.:32:58.

looked inevitable. Now there are questions that still remain.

:32:59.:34:54.

actually control the ball better friendly hit it harder. He was able

:34:55.:34:59.

to control that wishes forehand stroke. -- that vicious.

:35:00.:35:14.

That was wonderful, really good. That is why these top layers are so

:35:15.:35:20.

amazing. What a response! How do you play at

:35:21.:36:05.

defensively than that? -- better defensively. Remember the score at

:36:06.:36:19.

the French Open. The identical score. If Rafael Nadal halls here,

:36:20.:36:29.

it will be the same. -- hauls the score here.

:36:30.:38:10.

He played such a strong point. For was the volley? Why did he not

:38:11.:38:57.

close that out? He search -- that certainly was a point that he should

:38:58.:38:59.

not have lost. What a physical specimen he is.

:39:00.:40:08.

After two hours and 52 minutes on Centre Court he has match point.

:40:09.:41:42.

He has defended a match point and here is a break point.

:41:43.:42:29.

UMPIRE: the ball is challenged, or sideline. The ball was called out.

:42:30.:42:43.

Ad vantage, Rafael Nadal. UMPIRE: challenge, the ball was

:42:44.:43:19.

called out. Game, set, match, Rafael Nadal.

:43:20.:43:31.

Who is to say that this Manuel Neuer be here for the full fortnight? --

:43:32.:43:40.

that this man, Rafael Nadal. He looked good. He was challenged. It

:43:41.:43:56.

was a very tough match. The biggest cheer of the day is when he takes

:43:57.:44:05.

his shirt off! Very rurally will you see Rafael Nadal this happy after a

:44:06.:44:10.

first-round match. -- not very often. The female champion of last

:44:11.:44:29.

year looking on. He is going to want to win so badly in the next round.

:44:30.:44:35.

That goes without saying. There is some stress involved in playing a

:44:36.:44:48.

player that you lost to previously. Still the fact that his next

:44:49.:44:54.

opponent has done it on this court, that will make it interesting. The

:44:55.:45:01.

crowd is absolutely loved this effort by both of these players.

:45:02.:45:09.

Definitely one of the better matches in the men's championship so far.

:45:10.:45:20.

John McEnroe got the score line that he predicted almost one and a half

:45:21.:45:39.

hours ago. Here is how he secured his place in the second round. There

:45:40.:45:49.

is not any gap in the draw now. He cannot get enough of winning. That

:45:50.:45:56.

is one thing I can issue you. Any competitor gets tired. You do not

:45:57.:46:08.

get tired of winning. Signing with his right hand. He plays with his

:46:09.:46:20.

natural hand. But what about his uncle Tony? He suggested that he

:46:21.:46:33.

play left-handed. There are still not many left-handed players in the

:46:34.:46:53.

top 100. These Slovakian player did very well here today. -- the player

:46:54.:47:08.

flames -- from Slovakia. This arena has absolutely come alive after this

:47:09.:47:17.

match. Serena Williams well, on Centre Court next. -- will arrive.

:47:18.:47:34.

That is it. Rafael Nadal is safely through the first round. He talks to

:47:35.:47:42.

our commentator now. Very well done. 700 victories at

:47:43.:47:50.

this level. You are the 11th player in history to do that. What do you

:47:51.:48:01.

think? It is absolutely great. I have had a very long and successful

:48:02.:48:05.

career and I am very happy. That is more important to me. But this

:48:06.:48:13.

competition is very dangerous. I am very happy to go through. You have

:48:14.:48:19.

said that all odd, it is the early rounds and they are dangerous. What

:48:20.:48:26.

are the overriding emotions today? I am always happy when I am able to

:48:27.:48:30.

play on Centre Court. It is a very magic place. I have unbelievable

:48:31.:48:36.

memories from this court. I am very happy to be able to play here. What

:48:37.:48:45.

about the way you played here today? You came back from one set down.

:48:46.:48:59.

Have you found your feet on grass? My goal is to try to win, always.

:49:00.:49:05.

The next match will be a tough one, that is for sure. For the last three

:49:06.:49:15.

years, I have not played very much on grass and that affects my

:49:16.:49:21.

confidence. But I must play with the right attitude and think positive

:49:22.:49:26.

thoughts. The next round is important. Your opponent, a player

:49:27.:49:33.

who will -- beaches here a number of years ago? He is very dangerous, he

:49:34.:49:41.

placed many shots from the baseline. I will try. We wish you well.

:49:42.:49:52.

Congratulations. Thank you. SUE BARKER: Rafael Nadal has the

:49:53.:49:59.

toughest draw of the top four players. Some absolutely gorgeous

:50:00.:50:05.

rallies out on Centre Court. A real treat for the fans out there. Serena

:50:06.:50:09.

Williams will arrive on Centre Court shortly. But let's update June with

:50:10.:50:21.

what has happened around S W 19. John Isner out on Court three.

:50:22.:50:51.

I think she is OK. You can follow that match on number one court on

:50:52.:51:02.

BBC Two. Here is what is happening on Court 18.

:51:03.:51:12.

Some results to bring you. Angelique Kerber, seeded nine at these

:51:13.:51:20.

championships, she triumphed in straight sets. Next up, she plays

:51:21.:51:25.

Heather Watson. The Luciano Lopez is through, but he

:51:26.:51:41.

had to do with the hardware. -- the hard way. Some very close sets.

:51:42.:51:56.

That brings you right up to date with what is happening. As you can

:51:57.:52:03.

see, it is still very busy here at Wimbledon. Many people watching on

:52:04.:52:07.

the big screen and enjoying the absolutely or just weather. It is

:52:08.:52:12.

totally glorious. -- absolutely gorgeous. This is how Heather Watson

:52:13.:52:24.

went through to the second round. She did it in straight sets. A lot

:52:25.:52:33.

of British fans all to support her. -- out there. Look at this for a

:52:34.:52:46.

reaction. She reached the third round two years ago. She is doing

:52:47.:52:54.

very well right now. Earlier today, Roger Federer was out on Court

:52:55.:52:59.

Number One. He was out on court for just an hour and 33 minutes. He beat

:53:00.:53:06.

his Italian opponent. The seven times champion is through to the

:53:07.:53:11.

second round. After the match, he spoke to Gary Richardson.

:53:12.:53:17.

Congratulations. An excellent performance and one that will have

:53:18.:53:24.

given you a lot of pleasure? Yes. The grass is very green and

:53:25.:53:33.

slippery. It is nice to get the match won and I thought I played

:53:34.:53:38.

very well. I got a lot of breaks. I thought I served very well. I

:53:39.:53:43.

thought I came to the net very well. A perfect performance for your first

:53:44.:53:51.

match. Yes. I am eager to play, I am motivated and inspired. I want to

:53:52.:53:59.

win the first round and I am not underestimating anybody. I want to

:54:00.:54:02.

win this championship. That is why I am here. Getting the first match out

:54:03.:54:07.

of the way is always a great feeling. You talk about being

:54:08.:54:13.

motivated and inspired. As soon as you walk out here, you have walked

:54:14.:54:16.

out here hundreds of times, it must give you a huge lift. When I walk

:54:17.:54:26.

in, I am very happy and delighted to go on court but when you step out on

:54:27.:54:32.

the grass, it is very different. I know that this is it. You feel some

:54:33.:54:37.

pressure, of course. A thought on your opponent. He lost his last 12

:54:38.:54:46.

matches. Do you feel a tiny bit sorry for him? I know you are the

:54:47.:54:52.

opponent and you want to get through. I did not know about his

:54:53.:54:58.

record, to be honest. I know he can serve and volley some on the grass

:54:59.:55:02.

and that is great to see. I thought he did a good job and forced me, he

:55:03.:55:09.

tried to make me play. He does not serve as big as you have to on the

:55:10.:55:22.

grass. But feeling sorry? I had a lot of that when I played junior

:55:23.:55:26.

tennis. That is all gone. I have put in my fair share of hard work. I

:55:27.:55:32.

feel like I deserve it, always! Thank you. Thank you. SUE BARKER: at

:55:33.:55:45.

the age of 32, he is still in with a chance of winning a Grand Slam.

:55:46.:55:51.

Serena Williams is looking for her 18th Grand Slam title. She means

:55:52.:56:01.

business. A great big round of applause for the world number one

:56:02.:56:07.

seed. This is an American against an American. Her opponent became an

:56:08.:56:12.

American citizen in April of this year. She was born in Georgia. Tracy

:56:13.:56:22.

Austin, this is one of yours! We could use some more. Serena Williams

:56:23.:56:27.

was angry after she lost in the French Open. She said she was going

:56:28.:56:33.

to go home and practice and practice. She means business indeed.

:56:34.:56:40.

In 20 14 she has had some difficulty.

:56:41.:56:40.

practice. She means business indeed. In 20 14 she has had some

:56:41.:56:45.

difficulty. In 2013, she had an amazing year. She was so focused.

:56:46.:56:52.

Think about the pressure that she has in every match that she plays.

:56:53.:56:56.

She is the favourite for every competition that she goes into. If

:56:57.:57:00.

she loses, it is always a huge shock. In the French Open, she was

:57:01.:57:06.

absolutely destroyed. Especially the way that it happened, it was not

:57:07.:57:10.

even close. But that is when she is dangerous. She has won this

:57:11.:57:15.

championship five times and she is very, very hungry. I want to see

:57:16.:57:24.

that hunger returned to her game. -- come back to. Let's find out if she

:57:25.:57:33.

is ready. She has been speaking to Gary Richardson.

:57:34.:57:46.

It is never easy to have a lot of pressure and you are expected to go

:57:47.:57:52.

out and win every time you step on a court. You can look on pressure as a

:57:53.:57:59.

privilege or a burden. Does it feel like 16 years you have in coming

:58:00.:58:05.

here? It does not. I remember every moment. You remember each moment but

:58:06.:58:16.

what is the best moment? Definitely the last one, 2012. The Wimbledon

:58:17.:58:25.

champion. I remember interviewing you in Central London find your book

:58:26.:58:30.

came out. There is information in there about desire and emotion.

:58:31.:58:36.

Where does that come from? You cannot go and diet. I was born with

:58:37.:58:50.

it. -- and buy it. It started as a fire ant -- a flame and grew into a

:58:51.:58:55.

fire. When you are not playing tennis, how do you relax. I love

:58:56.:59:01.

painting. I do a lot of painting and relax. Can I just ask about your

:59:02.:59:10.

French Open defeat? How long did it take you to get over that? Who says

:59:11.:59:24.

I am over it? Are you not over it? Yes, I doubted. Disappointment in

:59:25.:59:32.

Paris. Does that burn inside you that it did not go well for you?

:59:33.:59:39.

Have you come here with more desire? You must come in here with a lot of

:59:40.:59:44.

desire. Hopefully I will be here. I am ready. I am excited. She was in

:59:45.:59:55.

great form. She is the ultimate competitor. Absolutely. She started

:59:56.:00:03.

15 years ago on the tour. Richard, her father, said they had so many

:00:04.:00:07.

interests and that he would be gone from the game very soon. But she is

:00:08.:00:12.

now 32 years old. It is great for supporters. I remember when Venus

:00:13.:00:17.

Williams won her first championship and I interviewed her. She asked me

:00:18.:00:23.

if I could bring in -- if she could bring in her younger sister and she

:00:24.:00:26.

said that she would be great as well. Now they have both won the

:00:27.:00:31.

tournament five times. An incredible story. This is Serena's 56th Grand

:00:32.:00:38.

Slam appearance and she is still a favourite. Absolutely. She has been

:00:39.:00:44.

able to extend her career because she has had some breaks. I think

:00:45.:00:53.

that is really beneficial and has given her a chance to get some

:00:54.:00:59.

perspective. She has been ill. When something is taken away from you, I

:01:00.:01:05.

think you realise that you do not want to go anywhere. She thinks why

:01:06.:01:09.

do I want to go anywhere else? She knows that she does this well. Thank

:01:10.:01:16.

you. Here on BBC Two, in just over ten minutes, we will go over to BBC

:01:17.:01:21.

One. We will follow this much. Now we go to Centre Court.

:01:22.:01:35.

Let's join our commentators. We are waiting for Serena Williams to start

:01:36.:01:40.

her campaign. She has played 79 matches and won 70 of them, five

:01:41.:01:46.

times the champion as Sue Barker was mentioned 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010 and

:01:47.:01:50.

2012. There's mum, who needs a hat in the

:01:51.:02:04.

competitors stand, looking straight into the sun. Tatishvili became an

:02:05.:02:12.

American citizen in April this year. Lindsay, Anna really struggling of

:02:13.:02:34.

late. Her last nine matches at this level have all been lost.

:02:35.:02:43.

If you're Serena and come intoing this tournament, still in shock

:02:44.:02:49.

after this second-round loss at French Open, this is exactly the

:02:50.:02:52.

type of first round that she would want.

:02:53.:03:20.

Serena has 79 wins and Tatishvili with two wins here at Wimbledon.

:03:21.:03:24.

Advantage Serena. Nothing wrong with that forehand,

:03:25.:03:48.

though. That's a great job by Tatishvili to

:03:49.:03:49.

go after the return. Ridge fally called a fault and then

:03:50.:04:17.

corrected. The raise of the eyebrows as if to say, "Oops, sorry."

:04:18.:04:54.

Wow. Great hitting from Tatishvili. So often it starts with just getting

:04:55.:05:24.

a read on the Serena serve. That's Marty Mulligan who was a fine

:05:25.:06:27.

player here. He happens to run a clothing

:06:28.:06:34.

company. Anna Tatishvili is wearing that,

:06:35.:06:48.

hence his interest in the match. That shot is going to be the shot.

:06:49.:07:42.

Tatishvili, it's a very hard, flat and low ball. That's tricky to

:07:43.:07:45.

handle on the grass. That's a couple of times that

:07:46.:08:32.

Tatishvili has had break point with a second serve.

:08:33.:09:25.

Absolute laser for a return there. Serena has to get used to her serve

:09:26.:09:34.

coming back. She's almost been caught flat footed after she's

:09:35.:09:36.

finished her service delivery. Close indeed, four break points

:09:37.:10:27.

Serena Williams has had to save in this game.

:10:28.:10:39.

An opening game that's now lasted eight minutes.

:10:40.:11:07.

She doesn't hold back, does she? She has a game plan to attack all her

:11:08.:11:13.

shots. Credit Tatishvili who has come out

:11:14.:11:44.

here not with a lot of confidence, but she's come out here looking like

:11:45.:11:46.

she believes. SUE BARKER: This first game is

:11:47.:12:07.

proving to be a battle. If you want to continue watching this, can you

:12:08.:12:10.

over on BBC Two. This match on Centre Court moves now over to BBC

:12:11.:12:16.

Two. We talked at the top of the programme about the great four

:12:17.:12:20.

champions on court, well Rafa, Roger and Maria are through, will Serena

:12:21.:12:25.

join them? Find out over on two. For now, though, bye-byement

:12:26.:12:31.
