Hello and welcome back to Wimbledon were, I am pleased to say, the rain

:00:39.:00:46.

had moved away, that covers are off and players are on the outside

:00:47.:00:52.

courts. That is the good news for all of the patient spectators who

:00:53.:00:56.

have waited most of the day. We only had about 20 minutes play early in

:00:57.:01:00.

the afternoon, so everyone has been watching the Centre Court on the big

:01:01.:01:06.

screen and we will be heading off to Court Number One in just a moment to

:01:07.:01:11.

see Johanna Konta. At the moment on Centre Court is the man of the

:01:12.:01:16.

moment, Marcus Willis, with a fairy tale story. He is playing Roger

:01:17.:01:22.

Federer. He had his serve broken in the opening set, that he had a break

:01:23.:01:27.

point against Federer's serve. If you want to see that match, it is on

:01:28.:01:33.

BBC One. But Marcus Willis has been smiling all the way through and

:01:34.:01:37.

enjoying the moment. It is a carnival atmosphere on Centre Court

:01:38.:01:42.

right now. Let's show you what is happening out on court well where

:01:43.:01:48.

Heather Watson is 31 up with a break of serve and it means we have

:01:49.:01:53.

another break point. They are close in the rankings, said this is a

:01:54.:01:58.

tough match for header. If you want to watch that, it is on the red

:01:59.:02:04.

button. It is on Court number 12. We are heading to Court Number One

:02:05.:02:10.

Britain's number one, Johanna Konta, up against this young lady, Monica

:02:11.:02:16.

Puig. Monica Puig has come back and broken her serve and it is 3-2 to

:02:17.:02:25.

hire in the second set. Sam Smith is alongside Simon Read, our

:02:26.:02:26.

commentators. Yes, it is old change. Johanna Konta

:02:27.:02:39.

had a break point in her last game, but Monica Puig is going to show a

:02:40.:02:44.

very different side to us than she showed yesterday. Broken for the

:02:45.:02:54.

first time. I am sure it is a terrible American expression, but

:02:55.:03:00.

I'm sure it does the job. We would all like a do over sometime and that

:03:01.:03:05.

is what Monica Puig has the chance of doing here. A third base.

:03:06.:03:16.

Yesterday I thought she was struggling with the dimensions of

:03:17.:03:20.

the court and the depth perception. She did not find her timing or her

:03:21.:03:22.

rhythm. Just a flick of the top of the net

:03:23.:03:53.

did not help Johanna Konta. It is difficult for her, she had the match

:03:54.:03:57.

completely under control yesterday and now it is tantalisingly away

:03:58.:04:02.

from her. There were a couple of signs at the start of the second set

:04:03.:04:07.

when Monica Puig was feeling more comfortable and then off they came

:04:08.:04:09.

because of the rain. Monica Puig made her debut three

:04:10.:04:58.

years ago and got to the third round. In the last few weeks she has

:04:59.:05:03.

really come to the fore. Her coach is Juan Todero.

:05:04.:06:12.

Yes, the margins are just working against Konta. I feel like this

:06:13.:06:20.

match is flipped on its head because in those baseline rallies yesterday

:06:21.:06:24.

it was Konta who was winning nine times out of ten and she would come

:06:25.:06:26.

out on top of those points. They are right up against the cold

:06:27.:06:49.

and believe me it is cold here. It is cold and windy today. Yesterday

:06:50.:06:54.

it was warm and they were very pleasant conditions in which to play

:06:55.:06:58.

tennis and to watch. But not today, it is a bit of a fight.

:06:59.:07:15.

Good second serve. Her serve has been a big weapon for her, but it

:07:16.:07:24.

let her down in her last service game when she served her first

:07:25.:07:28.

double to concede the break. She does not miss many of those. Per

:07:29.:07:32.

second service is one of the best in the tour.

:07:33.:07:44.

Just a little slow to react to that. It is a shot we have seen more and

:07:45.:07:53.

more in women's tennis. Venus and Serena brought it in and now it is

:07:54.:07:57.

something you would go away and practice. It is very tough to get

:07:58.:08:01.

the first ball after your serve from right under your feet.

:08:02.:08:09.

It has been well documented what a sea change been in the last 12

:08:10.:08:27.

months, mainly thanks to the Australian Open. Last year she was

:08:28.:08:33.

ranked 126. This year she is seeded for the first time. And she looked

:08:34.:08:39.

great in Eastbourne. She beat Petra Kvitova on the way. In the end she

:08:40.:08:50.

lost to Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal. But she is looking so

:08:51.:08:57.

confident. But difficult moments in the first 20 minutes that we have

:08:58.:09:03.

had this afternoon. She knew this would be tough and now Puig is

:09:04.:09:09.

showing us that she really can do something special here. One title to

:09:10.:09:19.

her credit in Strasbourg in 2014. She is the first Puerto Rican to

:09:20.:09:25.

ever win a WTA title. Not too many grass course around, as we were

:09:26.:09:30.

saying yesterday. Or as you were saying, none. It is not holding her

:09:31.:09:33.

back, though, is it? No. Is it my imagination or is Puig a

:09:34.:10:00.

fraction slow today. To me her timing does not look quite right on

:10:01.:10:01.

her forehand. She got really down to that one.

:10:02.:10:37.

With all the rain we have leading up to the Championships in the first

:10:38.:10:40.

few days the courts are still really soft. It is not hardening up and the

:10:41.:10:47.

ball is not bouncing up and these are not playing as the courts would

:10:48.:10:48.

do 20 years ago. She was in pole position, that was

:10:49.:11:15.

for sure. Maybe there was doubt in her head as to whether it was going

:11:16.:11:22.

out. It needs an mother do over. -- another.

:11:23.:11:45.

A really good serve. For a woman of five foot seven she does have a

:11:46.:11:54.

penetrating serve. There was bought at baseline just

:11:55.:12:29.

before that looked like it could have been proud, but she went with

:12:30.:12:32.

it and won the point impressively. Again, the served doing the trick

:12:33.:12:42.

for Monica. Thought about a challenge, but not

:12:43.:15:21.

getting involved. Sometimes what's very handy for opponents of Puig is

:15:22.:15:27.

that you get the same ball coming straight back at you. It's flat,

:15:28.:15:32.

hard and heavy. But once you can get your hand around it straightaway.

:15:33.:15:50.

A bit of work to do on that second serve as well. He wants to be back

:15:51.:16:02.

in Miami, doesn't he? Not his natural habitat. Not Miami weather.

:16:03.:16:12.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Exhalation from Konta, but to be

:16:13.:16:37.

honest she was gifted that game. The ball is picking up a lot more

:16:38.:16:41.

moisture, and she just has a lot more compromising her game.

:16:42.:17:38.

It is just out. It was Puig changing things up, getting the angles. Super

:17:39.:17:53.

point from her. Konta did well to stay in it as long as she did.

:17:54.:18:00.

Come on! APPLAUSE

:18:01.:18:23.

The wind at the moment is stronger than ever.

:18:24.:18:57.

When it switched to the Konta forehand, didn't look quite so

:18:58.:19:05.

secure. The Konta forehand has improved a lot. She seems as if

:19:06.:19:11.

she's fighting it a little and Puig would be well advised to go hard and

:19:12.:19:15.

fast and early into it as fast as possible.

:19:16.:19:23.

APPLAUSE Outstanding serving from Jo Konta.

:19:24.:19:59.

UMPIRE: New balls please. Miss Gunter leads by five games to four.

:20:00.:20:12.

Amazingly, Jo Konta hasn't won a match at Wimbledon. First round

:20:13.:20:16.

defeat in 2012 to Christina McHale and the following year Jelena

:20:17.:20:25.

Jankovic. Sharapova as well. She hasn't exactly picked her opponents

:20:26.:20:29.

very well! You said there were boxes to be ticked and this will be

:20:30.:20:34.

another. Yes, this will be a huge weight off her shoulders. It will be

:20:35.:20:42.

fascinating if Jo Konta puts in a really solid career. Who knows

:20:43.:20:46.

what's around the corner for her? I don't think we will be talking about

:20:47.:20:52.

the first few years of her career any more. Talking about the

:20:53.:20:56.

transformation in the last 12 months, it has been extraordinary.

:20:57.:21:00.

Even if you knew her really well and rated her very highly, you couldn't

:21:01.:21:07.

have imagined she would be playing this well if you had watched her

:21:08.:21:12.

last year. Fine rain is coming down. We may not have a lot of time left

:21:13.:21:20.

in this match, in this particular chapter of it. But we are going to

:21:21.:21:28.

continue and Puig is serving to stay in the match.

:21:29.:21:46.

APPLAUSE It's hard for the players to be able

:21:47.:21:57.

to concentrate. Still fine rain. But they've obviously decided they are

:21:58.:22:03.

going to continue this. It really is a vital stage of the match.

:22:04.:22:26.

Miss Konta is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:22:27.:22:35.

That would be brilliant in any conditions, that return. But she's a

:22:36.:24:04.

very resilient character, Monica Puig. Going to need all of that,

:24:05.:24:06.

here. How about that? It wasn't a brisk

:24:07.:24:36.

return but she sprung a real surprise with that shot.

:24:37.:25:05.

So, Konta has got to work hard to get this done in the second set.

:25:06.:25:33.

Fourth ace. What I like from Konta is that in the last five or ten

:25:34.:25:55.

minutes it has been spitting with rain, but no sense of her upping the

:25:56.:26:03.

tempo all rushing out here, that's always the temptation. Still margin

:26:04.:26:10.

for error. She has much more compromise in her game than Puig,

:26:11.:26:15.

but she's not trying to whiz through the points, getting ahead of

:26:16.:26:20.

herself. It's as if the conditions are perfect and she's just plugging

:26:21.:26:21.

away one point at a time. As if to prove us wrong... Puig has

:26:22.:26:40.

been returning yorkers, hasn't she? Very tough to pick those off Jo

:26:41.:26:51.

Konta's toes. Another cracking serve.

:26:52.:27:00.

Apart from that game where she was broken, she served consistently well

:27:01.:27:06.

both yesterday and today. Obviously difficult to read.

:27:07.:27:18.

Favouring it going to her backhand. Puig couldn't get to the drop shot.

:27:19.:28:10.

In the past, Jo Konta will have lost matches which have gone close like

:28:11.:28:17.

this, but her coach introduced her to a psychologist and she doesn't

:28:18.:28:21.

lose close matches now. Certainly not too many of them. He's a very

:28:22.:28:28.

measured guy as well, there is her boyfriend there, and get he gets on

:28:29.:28:32.

well with dad, I think that's always important! Good science! They have

:28:33.:28:39.

got a good relationship it because Esteban coached a very good Spanish

:28:40.:28:44.

player called Roberto Bautista Agut to the top 20 in the world and he

:28:45.:28:50.

has a young family with him and he wasn't that keen on travelling, but

:28:51.:28:55.

Jo knew him from when she worked out in Texas. I think Jo Konta practised

:28:56.:29:00.

that every tennis Academy in the world! Had she worked with Esteban

:29:01.:29:04.

there and she knew exactly what she wanted and she was good enough to

:29:05.:29:09.

say OK, let's give it a go. Jo Konta's mother not here for a good

:29:10.:29:17.

reason. Too nervous, I understand. Serving to stay in the match for a

:29:18.:29:19.

second time. She has such a good temperament. And

:29:20.:29:43.

very good technique. It's a simple game, efficient league produced.

:29:44.:29:45.

That is a good package. Two protracted backhands from each

:29:46.:29:51.

player. Clear thinking. Not too accustomed

:29:52.:30:15.

to net play. That is super defence from Jo Konta.

:30:16.:30:56.

The loudest noise we've had so far. Konta on the brink of her first ever

:30:57.:31:25.

win at Wimbledon. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:31:26.:31:59.

Did she finish with a flourish! Is a magnificent final game from the

:32:00.:32:06.

British number one. Torturous conditions. Cold, wet, windy. But

:32:07.:32:15.

she found enough to beat Monica Puig, who is playing much better

:32:16.:32:22.

today than she was yesterday. A different opponent, a lot of hanging

:32:23.:32:27.

around. My question yesterday was, how would Jo Konta handle being the

:32:28.:32:32.

favourite, and I think the verdict is, no problem at all. Monica Puig

:32:33.:32:44.

obviously very disappointed. Because she was a break up in this second

:32:45.:32:49.

set, it looked very threatening. But Konta rallied well. As we said

:32:50.:32:56.

before, the process she goes through, she describes her career as

:32:57.:33:01.

a process, but the process she went through allowed her not to get too

:33:02.:33:05.

down on herself, break back and then she was wonderful at the end. She's

:33:06.:33:16.

got such a solid game and that is emotional underbelly as well. She

:33:17.:33:21.

needed it today, that was a banana skin, that match. Handle everything.

:33:22.:33:27.

It's been tough. To come on 24-hour 's later in the middle of a match,

:33:28.:33:35.

not easy at all. Good signs for Jo can adjust stable. That's what you

:33:36.:33:38.

want on these kind of days and she delivered. She will play the winner

:33:39.:33:47.

of Eugenie Bouchard and Elena Rybarikova, likely to be Eugenie

:33:48.:33:51.

Bouchard. That would be another huge match. Let's not carried away, but

:33:52.:33:59.

the the side of the draw she is in, it is loaded. Very tough. An hour

:34:00.:34:07.

and 15 minutes, it took. She is courtside now with Lee McKenzie.

:34:08.:34:12.

Well, British summer Time might have gone but you are still here, your

:34:13.:34:18.

first win at Wimbledon, congratulations double yellow thank

:34:19.:34:22.

you so much! What pleased you most about your performance? It was

:34:23.:34:30.

definitely a tricky first round and she is playing very well so I knew I

:34:31.:34:34.

had to be there every single point. The conditions didn't make it easy

:34:35.:34:40.

for both of us. Also in the middle, I think it was 5-4, it even started

:34:41.:34:47.

drizzling a bit. There were a lot of obstacles. I was happy I was able to

:34:48.:34:51.

stay focused as I did and really just panicked and not rush and keep

:34:52.:34:57.

playing. I imagine the predators are temptation is, when you start to

:34:58.:35:01.

feel that precipitation in the air, you just want it done. -- the

:35:02.:35:08.

temptation is. Yes but I managed to keep myself present and not rush

:35:09.:35:12.

anywhere and enjoy being out there and almost wish to stay out here as

:35:13.:35:17.

long as possible. The things that please you most about your game or

:35:18.:35:22.

things to work on before your next opponent? Very happy with how I've

:35:23.:35:26.

been able to serve and also return. It's important to get the first

:35:27.:35:30.

strike in on this surface. The person who gets the upper hand

:35:31.:35:34.

earlier in the point tends to come through. It's about staying

:35:35.:35:39.

offensive and really looking to dictate out there. Congratulations,

:35:40.:35:45.

enjoyed it. Thank you. She really should enjoy it. She had to dig deep

:35:46.:35:51.

because Puig came out firing in that second set. She managed to break

:35:52.:36:00.

Konta and Konta really had to play hard to stay in the match. Well

:36:01.:36:07.

done, Jo Konta. The British number one is through, winning her first

:36:08.:36:12.

ever match here at Wimbledon. She's got a big future, hasn't she? Inside

:36:13.:36:18.

the world plus top 20 right now. We move from Court number one to Centre

:36:19.:36:25.

court right now, where he man of the moment, Marcus Willis, is playing

:36:26.:36:31.

his compatriot, -- is playing his hero, Roger Federer. A wonderful

:36:32.:36:36.

atmosphere. We will bring this to you on BBC Two in about ten minutes,

:36:37.:36:43.

we will be moving to centre court. Marcus is on Centre Court and his

:36:44.:36:47.

good friend Dan Evans is on Court two, playing Alexandr Dolgopolov.

:36:48.:36:52.

This is a tough one. Dolgopolov so entertaining to match. Daniel

:36:53.:36:57.

staying with him at the moment. -- to watch. A couple of results to

:36:58.:37:06.

bring you and Bernard Tomic, this match started yesterday afternoon,

:37:07.:37:11.

it stopped at two sets all and then it was restarted and comic had to

:37:12.:37:19.

just hold one service game to take it and he did. Through to the next

:37:20.:37:23.

round here at Wimbledon. And we're going to hear a lot more about

:37:24.:37:29.

Alexander Zverev of Germany, seeded 24. He's only a teenager but beat

:37:30.:37:36.

Roger Federer in the semifinals at Halle. He beat a tough opponent in

:37:37.:37:47.

Paul-Henri Mathieu, who certainly knows his way around a grass court.

:37:48.:37:54.

Remember the name, Alexander Zverev. We will show you Heather Watson, who

:37:55.:37:58.

took the first set 6-3 against Annika Beck but is now two breaks of

:37:59.:38:04.

serve down in the second at 3-0. Let's join Jo Durie and John

:38:05.:38:11.

Inverdale. COMMENTATOR: If you joined us at the

:38:12.:38:16.

end of the first sector meet you would have thought everything was

:38:17.:38:18.

going swimmingly for Heather Watson. But she's gone off the boil a bit

:38:19.:38:22.

and now things are going more difficultly.

:38:23.:38:27.

She is not missing as much now, Annika Beck. Consistently hitting

:38:28.:38:38.

the ball to the corners. When this match began we talked about this

:38:39.:38:42.

match being one of those matches you really wouldn't have a bet on

:38:43.:38:47.

because they are both around 40 in the world rankings and they passed

:38:48.:38:51.

each other either way alternate weeks. A very hard game to call in

:38:52.:38:55.

advance and even now a hard game to call because the emissions are still

:38:56.:38:59.

having a major impact here. We are right out on the far extremities of

:39:00.:39:03.

the court circuit and the wind is substantial out here.

:39:04.:39:11.

Yes, well, there you go. Annika Beck has been doing that regularly in

:39:12.:39:19.

this set. I think she's also come to terms with the wind a bit better.

:39:20.:39:24.

She's moving her feet around the ball now, which Watson has been

:39:25.:39:25.

doing for the first set. Our unofficial Beaufort scale for

:39:26.:39:38.

the wind speed is those three young Silver Birch is at the back of the

:39:39.:39:40.

court there! Which have been blowing all over the

:39:41.:39:55.

place. When we played the first three games this morning, they were

:39:56.:39:57.

almost 90 degrees. well, that is the rate of. As

:39:58.:41:31.

promised, we're in is in boxes in Britain is, in and of the moment, on

:41:32.:41:39.

centre court against Roger Federer. He has got 40-0 to the first game on

:41:40.:41:44.

the third. Wonderful atlas here on centre court. We will join that now

:41:45.:41:46.

with John McEnroe and Andrew Castle. COMMENTATOR: If you are just joining

:41:47.:41:51.

us, this is Marcus Willis is that he's the man who has been dominating

:41:52.:41:53.

the headlines at Wimbledon. The 25-year-old.

:41:54.:42:03.

APPLAUSE Has certainly use that shot

:42:04.:42:08.

extensively in this match, at least 15 signs, not won a lot of voice.

:42:09.:42:14.

Federer is onto it. -- a lot of voice. There are very few players

:42:15.:42:21.

ever who have had a better touch and feel than Federer. Oh!

:42:22.:42:40.

Anything over the net was good, after this. Just flicks it up. A

:42:41.:42:48.

little too much pace for with outgoings a get a lot easier to win

:42:49.:42:55.

the game at the net than that, that if the shore.

:42:56.:43:08.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Toying with the great man!

:43:09.:43:23.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE UMPIRE: Game, Willis. New balls,

:43:24.:43:47.

please. He is ahead of Roger Federer in this set! I reckon his girlfriend

:43:48.:43:54.

should take a little shop of the scoreboard there. Leave the first

:43:55.:43:59.

two sets out on the left. In fact, just do the games! Sharing a court,

:44:00.:44:07.

sharing a scoreboard with Roger Federer. An experience he is clearly

:44:08.:44:13.

enjoyed. The first set was over in half an hour. The second set was

:44:14.:44:14.

better. He is playing better and in the

:44:15.:44:26.

match now. He has always been an evening sort of guy!

:44:27.:44:43.

Are you saying he enjoyed the night like a little too much? Great

:44:44.:44:55.

company, great fun. 25 years of age the light goes on. You have got to

:44:56.:44:56.

sleep. To Marcus Willis's credit, he has

:44:57.:45:36.

lost four stone in weight. He has got three coaches. I will tell you

:45:37.:45:37.

about them in a second. He made pledges to his coaches when

:45:38.:45:51.

they started working together to always compete and think, to turn on

:45:52.:45:57.

your heart light is what they call that. You have got to respect that.

:45:58.:46:05.

How could we afford a coach if he made 300 bucks this year?

:46:06.:46:18.

He has been playing in French and German league matches and he coaches

:46:19.:46:28.

himself. I guess. His dad is an accountant as well. For the first

:46:29.:46:40.

time he has got something to look at with this prize money in the second

:46:41.:46:43.

round. I have watched Federer over the

:46:44.:47:18.

years and I am surprised that he has let him pull him out like that.

:47:19.:47:44.

That is a good job mixing up the serve.

:47:45.:48:07.

Settled into the Centre Court match and he keeps the lead.

:48:08.:48:20.

There are bound to be some people asking where has he been? A decent

:48:21.:48:28.

junior career, always a good guy to have around, loaded with talent, he

:48:29.:48:34.

played squash and tennis, clearly a good all-rounder. Where was he? It

:48:35.:48:39.

is a self discipline issue. He was sent home from Australia for not

:48:40.:48:42.

having a racket to practice and his funding was cut. The same story. But

:48:43.:48:49.

now a 25 with Jennifer his girlfriend with him advising him and

:48:50.:48:55.

helping him he has suddenly got to this stage. Let's hope he sticks

:48:56.:49:00.

with it. These days players peak in their late 20s, early 30s. Everybody

:49:01.:49:10.

is interested in this match. Next time the roof closes, he might want

:49:11.:49:26.

to think about going somewhere else? Perched in the Royal box is Mr and

:49:27.:49:28.

misses Federer watching their son. Great hands. He is trying everything

:49:29.:50:01.

and it is starting to work. An overhead from the baseline. Federer

:50:02.:50:04.

cannot believe what he is seeing. And Pedro's eight at 34 he has done

:50:05.:52:02.

it all in the game. Marcus Willis at 25 can still make his weight in the

:52:03.:52:09.

game. 49 of the players are 29 years of age or older. The average age is

:52:10.:52:11.

getting higher. He said no chance you disrespect me,

:52:12.:54:28.

the seven time champion from Switzerland.

:54:29.:54:33.

Have you checked the last time a club player has come from two sets

:54:34.:55:00.

down... I've done a lot but not that!

:55:01.:55:00.

STUDIO Loving the atmosphere on centre

:55:01.:55:06.

court, it's like a Davis Cup tie. Plenty happening outside but the

:55:07.:55:13.

rain has cleared. Not good news for Heather Watson. She took the first

:55:14.:55:17.

set 6-3 and now she is a break of serve down in the third. Not sure

:55:18.:55:21.

what's wrong with her but it is certainly going be German's way.

:55:22.:55:26.

That match is live on the red button. And Marcus Willis's good

:55:27.:55:31.

mate Dan Evans is out on court against Alexandr Dolgopolov. Going

:55:32.:55:45.

well for Dan Evans. 6-3, and on Court Number One you can also follow

:55:46.:55:49.

this online as well. They have not started yet. Grigor Dimitrov is

:55:50.:55:56.

taking on Gilles Simon. That will be a nice match. That is what is

:55:57.:56:00.

happening outside, but back under the roof we go.

:56:01.:56:16.

UMPIRE: Mr Willis is challenging the call.

:56:17.:57:13.

And here we go, it is in! He has had plenty of challenges at Club

:57:14.:57:21.

matches. You definitely need them. It is the

:57:22.:57:41.

first time I have heard people applaud when Federer has missed!

:57:42.:58:23.

He loves that afflict lob. For a split second it looked like maybe

:58:24.:59:14.

that would have been the right shot had it been deeper. -- conflict.

:59:15.:59:40.

Happy to cut it quite that close. Well played from break point down.

:59:41.:59:56.

He talked about concentration being more difficult to maintain. On the

:59:57.:00:03.

subject of experience he says sometimes it is a hindrance. He

:00:04.:00:08.

wants to play like an 18-year-old who knows nothing, that free spirit.

:00:09.:00:17.

You can see the type of level that Willis had when he played some of

:00:18.:00:26.

these rallies. That ball was dipping rather quickly. It was well handled.

:00:27.:00:49.

He had rojo backing up on that second serve.

:00:50.:01:04.

He is feeding off the crowd's energy.

:01:05.:01:41.

Of all the people who have helped him over time, the parents who have

:01:42.:01:50.

stayed with him, his new girlfriend, this lovely Jennifer, his family,

:01:51.:01:55.

and he has stayed on the road in some of the lesser-known venues on

:01:56.:01:59.

the road, until you get it yourself it will not happen. He had all the

:02:00.:02:04.

help in the world, he was an excellent junior at 15. They all

:02:05.:02:11.

told him the same stuff, go to bed earlier, eat Right, now he gets it.

:02:12.:02:15.

I hope he does well from here on whatever happens. It has been a

:02:16.:02:24.

lovely story. So he wasted a lot of time and years and he has got an

:02:25.:02:28.

opportunity to make up for some of that. It would be a shame if he did

:02:29.:02:37.

not. My dentist does not look like that.

:02:38.:02:46.

She has been a great influence on Marcus here.

:02:47.:04:43.

Federer is going to make him work that much harder.

:04:44.:05:01.

It is not going to be easy for him to do. You cannot challenge your own

:05:02.:05:12.

serve? As far as I knew you cannot, in the seniors, yes you can, but not

:05:13.:05:14.

here. That was a beautiful shot. He has

:05:15.:05:32.

tried this numerous times. Federer has been onto it.

:05:33.:05:43.

That is exactly what you expect from a guy who has been there and done

:05:44.:05:50.

that, one of the all-time greats. Arguably one of the all-time greats.

:05:51.:06:01.

This is happening way too fast for Willis.

:06:02.:06:17.

The fairy tale had at least a few moments. Reality has set in. On

:06:18.:06:28.

Centre Court playing Roger Federer, you can understand it. Andy Murray

:06:29.:06:37.

in 2012. Seven victories. The greatest match I have ever seen

:06:38.:06:43.

without doubt involve Roger Federer on this very court against Rafael

:06:44.:06:48.

Nadal. He has given us stunning memories here. He did something

:06:49.:06:57.

pretty quickly I did not anticipate which was break Pete Sampras' record

:06:58.:07:03.

of 14. He used to be the king of discord. For ten or 12 years it was

:07:04.:07:07.

Pete Sampras. UMPIRE: Let, second serve. This is

:07:08.:07:51.

good, he gets a second serve? That is the new rule.

:07:52.:08:08.

That was unusual to say the least to see him miss that ball. You feel the

:08:09.:08:17.

pressure to close this out. Even seven time Wimbledon champion

:08:18.:08:56.

are human. Two inexplicable misses. But they shrug it off so easily and

:08:57.:09:09.

so well. Just move on. He is out. As Federer advances, the

:09:10.:10:43.

handshake will be warm. What a wonderful tournament and what a

:10:44.:10:48.

great story for Marcus Willis. We hope that he pushes on and uses this

:10:49.:10:55.

as a platform for greater things. He had a huge squad in, friends, family

:10:56.:11:01.

and relatives to support him against one of the best.

:11:02.:11:24.

Now he is getting emotional now. That is right, you have done

:11:25.:11:30.

something really good. Roger Federer will be back for more.

:11:31.:11:52.

Whilst Willis could not get another victory at the Championships, and a

:11:53.:11:57.

victory, Federer is going for an eighth title. Goodbye, Marcus. Look

:11:58.:12:13.

at that. Just hang in with Roger. Exactly. He is standing next to

:12:14.:12:19.

Roger Federer. Who would ever have thought that was even possible. His

:12:20.:12:35.

mum are here, Cathy and James are so proud of their boy. He wants to play

:12:36.:12:42.

this Club match tomorrow. It might be a bit of a let down. There they

:12:43.:12:49.

are. I would recommend that his shoulder is hurting a little bit.

:12:50.:12:53.

Take a break and hang around Wimbledon. An interesting match.

:12:54.:13:00.

Roger Federer is through to the third round. He is talking to Gary

:13:01.:13:04.

Richardson. Many congratulations on your win.

:13:05.:13:08.

You have experienced so many things on Centre Court and today was very

:13:09.:13:15.

different against your opponent, wasn't it? Very different, I thought

:13:16.:13:18.

Marcus brought some unbelievable energy to the court with his fans

:13:19.:13:23.

and with his personality, so it was very refreshing to play against an

:13:24.:13:27.

opponent like this who drew in the crowd and made some great

:13:28.:13:31.

shotmaking. He played some great shots, but at times you were playing

:13:32.:13:37.

most of the crowd. I always knew it would be a completely different

:13:38.:13:40.

match that everything I have played here before at Wimbledon. For me it

:13:41.:13:45.

is always very special to play on Centre Court at Wimbledon, but for

:13:46.:13:49.

him it was the first time. It was like when I walked out in 2001

:13:50.:13:54.

against Pete and I had nothing to lose and you can just enjoy

:13:55.:13:58.

yourself. Marcus did that wonderfully and I had the pressure

:13:59.:14:01.

on my shoulders even though I thought it was a pressure

:14:02.:14:02.

pre-tournament. Yes, my mindset going in was that I

:14:03.:14:24.

was playing a player ranked top 50. I wish the best for him, I hope he

:14:25.:14:31.

can rise in the rankings and it was a pleasure for me to play against

:14:32.:14:38.

him. How is your fitness? Do you feel you are 100%? How do you feel

:14:39.:14:43.

tonight? It's the second round, the grass is still very fresh so it's

:14:44.:14:47.

difficult to move on it. You have to be careful not to slip around. Tough

:14:48.:14:51.

playing against an opponent who is coming in a lot. Obviously I'm happy

:14:52.:14:56.

to be in the third round. Well done on your win.

:14:57.:15:00.

STUDIO One thing is the shore, Roger will

:15:01.:15:04.

never give anything away about any injury at all. This is a moment

:15:05.:15:09.

Marcus Willis will never forget. How gracious of Roger to congratulate

:15:10.:15:14.

him. He's been following the story, he said he's been watching Marcus

:15:15.:15:18.

come through and reading about him. He's certainly had his moment and

:15:19.:15:22.

given us someone the full memories over the past few days. I hope you

:15:23.:15:29.

enjoy his experience on centre court. Let's hear what he has to

:15:30.:15:31.

say. Many congratulations. Tell me about

:15:32.:15:39.

the experience of being out there on centre court. Yeah, it's daunting,

:15:40.:15:47.

it's tough. I was playing all right, panicking a bit on the big points

:15:48.:15:52.

but I settled into the match. I played a bad game at 4-4 in the

:15:53.:15:58.

third but he does that committee puts you under a lot of pressure.

:15:59.:16:03.

There were times when you were celebrating, you were hitting

:16:04.:16:06.

fantastic shots and it was almost like you have won! Yes, I'm enjoying

:16:07.:16:11.

it out there. If I'm playing well and competing with Roger Federer for

:16:12.:16:15.

a couple of sets, I'm doing the right thing. I still have a lot of

:16:16.:16:19.

improving to do. What sort of springboard do you hope it can be

:16:20.:16:28.

for your career? I just need to keep going and... I'm out of the

:16:29.:16:32.

tournament. It sounds funny but I'm disappointed to lose, I went out

:16:33.:16:36.

there hoping to win. It's been a fantastic few weeks. You can hold

:16:37.:16:40.

your head very high. You said in the build-up to this match you haven't

:16:41.:16:44.

always been quite as dedicated. Do you think you might sort of change

:16:45.:16:48.

now? Over the past few years I've been a lot better but the results

:16:49.:16:51.

did not come straightaway. I'm just going to keep doing what I've been

:16:52.:16:57.

doing. I'm going to knuckle down and use experiences like this to make me

:16:58.:17:03.

contribute even harder. Jamie Vardy has shown in football, a non-league

:17:04.:17:10.

player five years ago and now an England player. Can you draw

:17:11.:17:14.

comparisons? He's been playing fantastically well, what a story.

:17:15.:17:18.

I'm just going to keep my head down and keep working. I know you don't

:17:19.:17:23.

know where you're playing next week but sometime in the next month there

:17:24.:17:26.

will be a tournament somewhere in the world. How many people will be

:17:27.:17:31.

watching your next match, do you think? I have no idea. The crowd

:17:32.:17:36.

have been amazing today, thanks to them. You will have a little

:17:37.:17:39.

celebration tonight? I'm absolutely exhausted, so I might wait and let

:17:40.:17:45.

things calm down. I find myself a beer now! You have, go and enjoy it.

:17:46.:17:50.

He's probably earned himself a couple! Tim is with me in the studio

:17:51.:17:55.

and we can talk to our commentary team just before the next

:17:56.:17:58.

commentators come in, because they are going to put another match on

:17:59.:18:03.

Centre Court. Mac, that was pretty special, it was like a Davis Cup tie

:18:04.:18:10.

on Centre court. It was fun, there was a lot of energy like a football

:18:11.:18:14.

match. I think that's what we expected and hoped for. He was

:18:15.:18:17.

clearly quite overwhelmed in the beginning and it was a bit nerve

:18:18.:18:23.

wracking that it would be a complete and utter mismatch. Once he settled

:18:24.:18:26.

and got the game under his belt he started to play a bit better. He

:18:27.:18:30.

started to throw the kitchen sink at Federer, which was fun. I hope he

:18:31.:18:34.

doesn't stick with it, commit and see what he's made of, see what he's

:18:35.:18:39.

got. It's easy to get fired up when you're playing Roger Federer at

:18:40.:18:44.

Wimbledon, that's a no-brainer. Where is he playing next week? That

:18:45.:18:49.

club match or something... He's playing in the Coventry league. He's

:18:50.:18:53.

got to fire up tomorrow, he's got a big match! I was looking for him to

:18:54.:18:59.

try to get eight games in a shirt, a souvenir from Federer, but I didn't

:19:00.:19:06.

quite see the eight. If they let him in the locker room after the match,

:19:07.:19:11.

he can get it! He looked like he competed well in the second and

:19:12.:19:14.

third sets because he's quite unorthodox, it looked like he was

:19:15.:19:18.

hitting his spots well on the server. A couple of nervous moments

:19:19.:19:22.

in the third set. I think he's actually got some pretty good hands.

:19:23.:19:27.

Obviously the fitness has been a big issue and his movement is a big

:19:28.:19:32.

issue. To me he's got an ability to use different shots. He's good at

:19:33.:19:36.

the net. He could get fitter, so let's hope he does that for

:19:37.:19:41.

starters. As long as you go out and do the best you can and maximise

:19:42.:19:47.

what you've got, your ability, then you've got nothing to do except feel

:19:48.:19:52.

some pride. When he gets something like that in a losing effort and you

:19:53.:19:56.

walk onto the centre Court at Wimbledon, you had better commit. It

:19:57.:19:59.

would be an absolute shame if he didn't. Chris had a run like that in

:20:00.:20:06.

2008. He went through qualifying and the prequalifying and everyone got

:20:07.:20:11.

terribly excited, there were pictures in the newspapers... What

:20:12.:20:15.

happened to him? He's coaching in the doubles, he's still in the game.

:20:16.:20:21.

But he said, about Marcus, he makes the game ugly and awkward to play

:20:22.:20:26.

against, and that's a big plus. Making people play worse than you...

:20:27.:20:33.

Maybe he can hire Radek Stepanek as a coach! He could learn from him!

:20:34.:20:38.

What advice would you give him, Mac? You talked about his strengths, the

:20:39.:20:43.

serving and volleys. It seems to be a game suited to grass. He has to be

:20:44.:20:48.

able to move on to other services -- surfaces as well. The reality check

:20:49.:20:52.

might be that, I haven't seen him play on any other surface apart from

:20:53.:20:58.

highlights on YouTube. These days it's more about movement and

:20:59.:21:06.

athleticism. On grass people stay back a lot. He's more old school,

:21:07.:21:11.

and anomaly, trying to rob shots and volleys. He's got to be able to move

:21:12.:21:16.

on a slower hard court and God forbid to see him on clay, what

:21:17.:21:20.

happens there! There are some issues but at this particular point that

:21:21.:21:24.

should be easy inspiration to try to get as fit as possible. Absolutely,

:21:25.:21:30.

OK, Mac. Andy Carroll thank you very much. Tim, hopefully it has whetted

:21:31.:21:34.

the appetite. When you put in the hard work, and he has, he's lost

:21:35.:21:38.

weight and train hard, just to feel what it's like to be playing matches

:21:39.:21:44.

on the big stage, it has to motivate him? No doubt about it. We've

:21:45.:21:49.

reflected on that journey. This was his eighth match and he had never

:21:50.:21:54.

even played a match let alone won a match at to a level. To beat a guy

:21:55.:22:00.

like Ricardas Berankis, it's a great achievement on any surface.

:22:01.:22:05.

Hopefully he will go away and decompress and soak up the last ten

:22:06.:22:09.

or 12 days of action and then think how am I going to move forward?

:22:10.:22:13.

Everything John talked about, he has to get fitter again. He has to

:22:14.:22:19.

improve his forehand. He struggles to generate pace. He has to keep

:22:20.:22:23.

working at those strengths, because he has got a good lefty turf and

:22:24.:22:28.

keep moving forward, not a lot of people do that. He's got a lot of

:22:29.:22:32.

challenges ahead but hopefully he will continue to embrace them. Let's

:22:33.:22:37.

look back at some of the best moments of his match-up on Centre

:22:38.:22:42.

Court. This was a nice moment, Roger letting him walk out in front. We

:22:43.:22:47.

were down there, it was such a huge cheer and he will never forget that.

:22:48.:22:55.

Definitely not. In the warm up he got a cheer from the crowd. This is

:22:56.:23:00.

where he is dangerous. Good variation, good slice, good feel for

:23:01.:23:07.

the game. A couple of shots, as this lob shows, he will remember these

:23:08.:23:13.

points when he has got the seven time champion running around Centre

:23:14.:23:17.

Court. We knew he was nervous in the first set and he looked nervous, but

:23:18.:23:23.

once he got himself into it, for two sets he was competitive with the

:23:24.:23:28.

greatest player of all time! Ras can be a bit of a leveller. It's still

:23:29.:23:35.

lush out there. -- grass can be a leveller. His attitude, saying, how

:23:36.:23:43.

far was that in? I loved his attitude. He has really thrived in

:23:44.:23:52.

it. Not necessarily that difficult when you're playing in front of

:23:53.:23:59.

15,000 people at home! We see this sport is so hard and it's so

:24:00.:24:03.

disciplined, to see someone out there enjoying the moment and

:24:04.:24:07.

embracing it... Absolutely, it is very special. Saying at home in the

:24:08.:24:13.

biggest tournament in the world is not that difficult. In a month's

:24:14.:24:17.

time when he is playing a Futures event in the far east or Central

:24:18.:24:21.

America, when there are a couple of men and their dog watching, then

:24:22.:24:26.

it's harder to embrace it. But that's where he's at. It will be

:24:27.:24:30.

interesting to see what this does for his ranking. He was 772 coming

:24:31.:24:37.

into prequalifying. To have qualified and then won a round, it

:24:38.:24:41.

will probably triple or quadruple the number of points he had and get

:24:42.:24:45.

him into some tournaments. Roger understands it, he gets it. He said

:24:46.:24:51.

it's not just a great story for tennis, it's a great story. And

:24:52.:24:55.

hopefully an inspiration to youngsters, to say you can go out

:24:56.:24:59.

there and enjoy yourself. Absolutely. When you reflect on how

:25:00.:25:05.

far he's come and the interest it's created, it's absolutely massive. We

:25:06.:25:09.

needed that at this time of year, with tennis being the focal point of

:25:10.:25:12.

British sport right now, the more young kids we can get playing the

:25:13.:25:17.

game, you've got Murray and Federer and Djokovic who inspire so many,

:25:18.:25:20.

but having a home-grown hero like this for the first couple of days of

:25:21.:25:24.

the championships can only be a good thing. His serve, he known as

:25:25.:25:32.

Willbomb, an as a lefty serve that's very effective. It is. You don't see

:25:33.:25:37.

that many lefty serves but he is able to hit his spots. He hits the

:25:38.:25:45.

good slower one out wide and he can hit it on the deuce box. I'm so glad

:25:46.:25:54.

the tournament committee put this on centre court. It would have been

:25:55.:25:57.

lost if it was out on Court one. With the roof closed it was almost

:25:58.:26:03.

more magical, wasn't it? It was so noisy! When you put the lid on

:26:04.:26:07.

15,000 people it really keeps the noise inside. I think it's been a

:26:08.:26:12.

magical story and when you think about a person coming through that

:26:13.:26:17.

journey, number 772, playing the seven times champion on centre

:26:18.:26:20.

court, I've been asking a few people what is the lowest ranked player

:26:21.:26:25.

ever to play a singles match on Centre Court, I haven't found the

:26:26.:26:28.

answer but I'm going to look into it! What I thought was also magical

:26:29.:26:32.

at the end was seeing his parents embrace. He's talked about how much

:26:33.:26:36.

they gave up to help him in the early years. Your parents did, my

:26:37.:26:40.

parents did. For them to see that, they will never forget that. It's

:26:41.:26:45.

been a very special time for us to watch, the spectators, but family

:26:46.:26:49.

and friends who been so close, they will have lived through the highs

:26:50.:26:52.

and lows. This certainly has been a very big high. I think he will go

:26:53.:26:57.

out and celebrate with his lads who have been queueing for a feed days.

:26:58.:27:04.

Yes, he can afford to buy a few drinks now! That is the difference

:27:05.:27:13.

can he has earned ?50,000. He said... Now this will give him the

:27:14.:27:19.

chance to travel and do more. It is expensive down at that end of the

:27:20.:27:23.

rankings. No doubt about it, this is an opportunity for him to reinvest.

:27:24.:27:27.

If you're not making any money, you're not getting any income,

:27:28.:27:31.

you're looking for a bit of sponsorship or funding from the LTA.

:27:32.:27:34.

It's an opportunity for him to invest in himself. Post-Wimbledon

:27:35.:27:39.

you're going to be looking to play abroad and see what opportunities

:27:40.:27:44.

there will be, whether it is Futures or Challengers, there's not a lot of

:27:45.:27:49.

prize money at that level. Hopefully he can get a good schedule and keep

:27:50.:27:53.

moving up the rankings. He can certainly invest in a couple of

:27:54.:27:58.

beers tonight! It is one of the magical days of Wimbledon. It was a

:27:59.:28:01.

great story. Thank you very much, Tim. There is going to be another

:28:02.:28:07.

match on Centre Court but outside, it has been raining and play has

:28:08.:28:10.

been stopped on the outside courts, but as you can see, the umbrellas up

:28:11.:28:17.

and play is likely to start again at 7pm. Hopefully still some more play

:28:18.:28:23.

fall of those people who have waited all day to watch the tennis. The

:28:24.:28:27.

lucky ones have been on centre court but not a lot outside. Hopefully

:28:28.:28:32.

some still to come this evening. We have had some matches completed and

:28:33.:28:36.

some results to bring you, starting with Britain's women's number one,

:28:37.:28:44.

Jo Konta. Seeded for the first time ever and winning her first match at

:28:45.:28:48.

the championships, defeating Monica Puig 6-1, 7-5.

:28:49.:28:54.

And Petra Kvitova, twice a champion here, seeded ten in this tournament,

:28:55.:29:03.

she has come through 6-0, 6-4 over Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Always a

:29:04.:29:13.

danger on this surface. Well, Alexander Zverev has already proved

:29:14.:29:18.

he's a big danger on men's tour. He's seeded 24 and he beat Roger

:29:19.:29:21.

Federer in the semifinals of a warm up tournament on grass in Halle. He

:29:22.:29:30.

has come through comfortably against a tough opponent, France's

:29:31.:29:37.

Paul-Henri Mathieu. Want to look out for in the future. So is Austria's

:29:38.:29:41.

Dominic Thiem. He is seeded eight and he has come through against

:29:42.:29:50.

Austria's Florian Meyer. Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev two

:29:51.:29:53.

rising stars of the game. The one at the top of the rankings, there is

:29:54.:29:59.

only one, Novak Djokovic. He was on centre court earlier this afternoon.

:30:00.:30:02.

A wonderful match, so entertaining. Great tennis and he came through in

:30:03.:30:07.

that tie-break 7-5 to defeat a Adrian Mannarino, who is celebrating

:30:08.:30:12.

his 20th birthday today. Djokovic just too good on the day. He does

:30:13.:30:22.

his bow to all four corners. Getting the appreciation from the whole

:30:23.:30:26.

crowd and I'm sure his coach, Boris Becker. He's looking in awesome

:30:27.:30:36.

form. Well, Heather Watson was playing Annika Beck on Court 12 when

:30:37.:30:42.

she had a very, very heavy fall. This is just before the rain came

:30:43.:30:47.

down. Heather obviously concerned. It is rather nasty, not sure I do

:30:48.:30:52.

actually want to see it too much, but there we go. She has had it

:30:53.:30:57.

strapped, she had the icepack on for some time and she had it strapped,

:30:58.:31:02.

but they are now off the court and Annika Beck was going so well in

:31:03.:31:07.

that match. Watson took the first set 6-3. Today she hasn't dropped a

:31:08.:31:13.

game. They will be resuming their match hopefully very soon if the

:31:14.:31:20.

weather holds. So, we are going to Centre Court. There will be another

:31:21.:31:24.

match played. It has been moved from court three and it is another tough

:31:25.:31:29.

first round, Tsvetana Pironkova who has been a semifinalist here,

:31:30.:31:36.

against Belinda Bencic. She is seeded seven. Just got under way,

:31:37.:31:39.

it's in the opening game. Let's join our commentators.

:31:40.:31:43.

COMMENTATOR: Yes, the opening game here on centre.

:31:44.:31:53.

Explosive shot from Pironkova. Really powers through. This is where

:31:54.:32:16.

today's ladies are so comfortable on this surface. They have had their

:32:17.:32:19.

best results on grass and it's going to be an absolute battle today.

:32:20.:32:34.

Clean, concise hitting from the world number 71. Pironkova is also

:32:35.:32:43.

coming in with some really good confidence and backing up with a

:32:44.:32:50.

fabulous performance at the French Open. She lost to Samantha Stosur in

:32:51.:32:59.

the quarterfinals. Had a great win against Agnieszka Radwanska, which

:33:00.:33:03.

will help her confidence. She will have a lot of self belief. She has

:33:04.:33:10.

won nine of the last 11 matches, Belinda Bencic recovering slightly

:33:11.:33:14.

from injury, missed the whole of the clay-court season with a back

:33:15.:33:18.

injury. Slowly getting back into her groove and finding her feet on

:33:19.:33:19.

grass. -- Belinda Bencic fascinates me,

:33:20.:33:34.

actually. She plays tennis a bit like a chess player. She's had a lot

:33:35.:33:38.

of work with Martina Hingis and her mother, so she really understands

:33:39.:33:42.

how to construct points. There is Martina, sitting next to the father.

:33:43.:34:02.

It's just great to see players who think about how they want to play.

:34:03.:34:10.

They don't just go out there and play linear tennis, hard and fast

:34:11.:34:14.

through the middle of the court. They learn how to open up the court

:34:15.:34:16.

and be aggressive on the right ball. That is exquisite from Pironkova.

:34:17.:34:39.

Beautifully weighted lob. Three early break points. You just have to

:34:40.:34:47.

wonder as well, Bencic is coming here after losing in the first round

:34:48.:34:53.

at Eastbourne last year. Things not going as well for her this year.

:34:54.:35:03.

You can do all the running you like if you are Pironkova, but that was

:35:04.:35:09.

hit straight down the middle. Yeah, good recovery here from

:35:10.:35:43.

Bencic. Of course these two players have been waiting for what seems

:35:44.:35:48.

like an eternity to get on court. This match was supposed to be on

:35:49.:35:52.

Court three. It's been moved here at the last minute to centre court.

:35:53.:35:57.

When you deal with the fact that not just your playing later but a

:35:58.:36:00.

totally different atmosphere and feel, you're under the roof and on

:36:01.:36:02.

centre court. Yeah, I love Pironkova. Her best

:36:03.:36:25.

asset I think would be her movement. She's an interesting character, she

:36:26.:36:29.

doesn't give you much. Her game face pretty solid. Great athlete on the

:36:30.:36:35.

court. I don't think it would have bothered her, in fact I think it

:36:36.:36:39.

would have rather excited her that she is playing on Centre Court.

:36:40.:36:43.

She's very confident at the moment, played a lot of matches on Philippe

:36:44.:36:49.

Chatrier in Paris. This will not be a daunting point for her.

:36:50.:37:32.

Yeah, beautifully placed that time from Bencic. I don't think there's a

:37:33.:37:42.

player that uses their legs better than this. Look how low she gets

:37:43.:37:47.

down, she really sets that outside leg behind the ball. Perfect play

:37:48.:37:48.

for grass. Big, heavy hitting from both these

:37:49.:38:25.

two, so early on. I just love this young lady at 17, she has won four

:38:26.:38:30.

tournaments. She just comes with bucket loads of character and she's

:38:31.:38:35.

certainly be player of the future. Just 19 years of age, still doing

:38:36.:38:37.

remarkable things. Yes. All about the placement for

:38:38.:39:00.

Bencic. The shot before, she just rolled her wrists so beautifully to

:39:01.:39:05.

take her opponent out of court. Absolutely, she is so calm with her

:39:06.:39:10.

shotmaking. She just waits for Pironkova to commit and then goes

:39:11.:39:12.

back in behind. I think if you're a coach and you

:39:13.:39:58.

wanted to model a perfect grass court game around any two players on

:39:59.:40:03.

the tour, I think you're looking at them right now. There's few other

:40:04.:40:11.

girls on the tour who play as flat, as effective on grass as these two

:40:12.:40:16.

ladies who are on the court right now.

:40:17.:40:50.

Oh! Bencic has come out firing in the second set. Well, the crowd are

:40:51.:41:00.

really going to see a fantastic match today. The conditions on the

:41:01.:41:04.

court are playing a bit slower. They're going to have a lot of long

:41:05.:41:08.

rallies. This is just really good tennis. Two break points then for

:41:09.:41:13.

Pironkova to defend. Well, Bencic needs just one. Came

:41:14.:41:38.

back from love in her own service game and she has broken Pironkova.

:41:39.:41:42.

She has the early break here on centre. A little bit unusual, the

:41:43.:41:58.

way Bencic says. Considering Melanie Molitor, Martina Hingis's mother and

:41:59.:42:06.

had a lot of say in building her game. But she's a bit more extreme

:42:07.:42:10.

than Martina. She has a different bodies Lyle -- body style as well,

:42:11.:42:17.

Martina was a bit more slight and she could use her opponent's ball a

:42:18.:42:21.

bit more. But you look at Belinda and she's quite a strong girl. She's

:42:22.:42:26.

tall and she uses her physicality well. I love how she uses her legs.

:42:27.:42:30.

I remember seeing her in juniors when she was 13 or 14 and she spent

:42:31.:42:36.

hours and hours on the back courts and feeding and just working really

:42:37.:42:41.

hard. She's just a product of hard work. She's just a really strong

:42:42.:42:50.

character when she's on the court, she is thinking, I just love her

:42:51.:42:52.

attitude and what she does out there. A view more people coming to

:42:53.:43:07.

join us here on Centre Court. When they hear a rising star of women's

:43:08.:43:13.

tennis and a former semifinalist, they think, why not?

:43:14.:43:19.

Katarina that is great play. Terrific serving, great combinations

:43:20.:44:38.

from Bencic. Great action on her serve. And accurate.

:44:39.:45:25.

Plenty of moisture inside the Centre Court with the roof on. The ball is

:45:26.:45:32.

sitting up a little. Just a little bit slower.

:45:33.:45:45.

She had to play one more shot but she consolidates and confirms the

:45:46.:45:57.

break. This is a player that is coming back from not just one but

:45:58.:46:01.

two serious injuries. The back injury that ruled her out of the

:46:02.:46:05.

clay-court season and a thigh injury in the grass court season. She has

:46:06.:46:09.

not played much tennis. Yes, exactly.

:46:10.:46:18.

You've got to love that. Using the pace from Pironkova's serve, leaning

:46:19.:46:26.

into it and cuts off the angle. This is perfect returning.

:46:27.:47:01.

She really likes to move the ball around. She is confident with going

:47:02.:47:09.

line, Bencic. She doesn't just play passively through the centre of the

:47:10.:47:17.

court. There are so many shots where she is not doing something of it.

:47:18.:47:29.

She is not only playing on the shelves, the return of serve is so

:47:30.:47:38.

effective. She is getting it deep and using all of the angles. That is

:47:39.:47:50.

solid, 85%. Three more break points for the 19-year-old.

:47:51.:48:20.

She is not to be messed with in this sort of form. Another break. And we

:48:21.:48:30.

are 18 minutes into this match. If you look at these players and the

:48:31.:48:34.

differences of what they bring to the match. The big thing that Linda

:48:35.:48:41.

Bencic can ring is that she likes to take the ball early. We will see how

:48:42.:48:47.

finishing the ball a lot more at the net and Pironkova. That is perhaps

:48:48.:48:52.

where she can exploit Pironkova's game. She knows she is not going to

:48:53.:48:57.

move forward. If I was Bencic, I would be chipping and ringing

:48:58.:49:02.

Pironkova in a bit. She doesn't have great hands at the net. She is not

:49:03.:49:07.

comfortable moving forward, she doesn't like to finish the point at

:49:08.:49:10.

the net unless it is a high drive volley. The traditional volley, she

:49:11.:49:16.

is not great. I think we will see a little of that from the lender. Just

:49:17.:49:24.

play a few mind games here. This is Pironkova's favourite surface. She

:49:25.:49:29.

reached the semifinal back in 2010. She beat Venus Williams and lost in

:49:30.:49:37.

the semifinal. She then reached the quarterfinals a year later. She

:49:38.:49:41.

loves playing here and the grass. But it is a different set of

:49:42.:49:44.

circumstances when you play under the roof. So many people have talked

:49:45.:49:50.

about the different dimension. Bencic owning the stage here, she

:49:51.:49:52.

leads 4-1. Just about got away with it. One

:49:53.:50:15.

thing to watch. We listen and we hear coaches talk about getting your

:50:16.:50:20.

outside leg behind the ball. That is one thing Bencic does incredibly

:50:21.:50:22.

well. Just absolutely no spin at all

:50:23.:50:48.

coming from Pironkova's racket. You could read the writing of the ball

:50:49.:50:53.

the minute it comes off the string, it is so flat.

:50:54.:51:17.

Not enough from Pironkova. She has been moved this way and that way.

:51:18.:51:25.

Bencic just finds the killer to rub it in. It is terrific awareness at

:51:26.:51:31.

all times for Bencic. Anything short she is up at the net and very

:51:32.:51:33.

comfortable moving forwards. First challenge for Hawk-Eye. Oh.

:51:34.:52:06.

Well in. At least a good millimetre. Once again, Bencic up 40-0, eight .4

:52:07.:52:28.

5-1. It is on the line. She has not put a

:52:29.:53:02.

foot wrong so far, Belinda Bencic. I love how she is controlling this

:53:03.:53:07.

match. See how she uses that outside leg. She finds it so easy then to

:53:08.:53:13.

move forwards and take the ball early. Constantly looking to take

:53:14.:53:14.

charge of the match. It was gaping, wasn't it? Sometimes

:53:15.:53:58.

you have too much time. That is when a mistake can creep in. A rare

:53:59.:54:03.

mistake from Bencic. That is cheeky. Beautifully

:54:04.:54:28.

executed. Look at the composure here from Bencic. She is so calm and

:54:29.:54:33.

thinking at all times, very clear with her decisions. Amazing for a

:54:34.:54:36.

19-year-old. Clever, took the weight of that

:54:37.:54:49.

completely, just left the slice and the grass do the talking, spinning

:54:50.:54:51.

away. Just 85 mph, that serve. That is just too good from Bencic.

:54:52.:55:49.

How about this for placement? It is that extreme grip on the forehand.

:55:50.:55:54.

Just finds contact in front, nice and easy with that. And she has

:55:55.:56:04.

found it again. She is just having a field day, Belinda Bencic. She is

:56:05.:56:16.

enjoying that. Martina Hingis is enjoying it as well.

:56:17.:56:27.

One set point saved but still more to come here. Needs to kill the pace

:56:28.:56:41.

of this first set which is racing away from her.

:56:42.:57:00.

There is her father, a constant companion, always travelling with

:57:01.:57:10.

her. Has been coaching her for her whole career. He has done a great

:57:11.:57:20.

job. Just thought about questioning it. Set point here to defend.

:57:21.:57:52.

Gutsy tennis from Pironkova. For the first time in the match, she has

:57:53.:58:03.

fought an and taking the battle back to Bencic. She is having to find

:58:04.:58:09.

something extra. She can do damage with that backhand, hitting it so

:58:10.:58:13.

hard and flat, penetrating into the corners and that gives her the

:58:14.:58:16.

opportunity to use the forehand a bit more, great clay.

:58:17.:58:43.

It is really interesting, at the US Open last year, the average rally

:58:44.:58:54.

was about 3.4, 3.5, for the women. And at the moment, Pironkova's

:58:55.:58:56.

average rally is 5.8. Off her serve. Didn't need to hit that shot. She

:58:57.:59:29.

went to a little bit too much. Bencic is winning the rallies taking

:59:30.:59:37.

about 4.2, 4.3. She is able to control the points a bit quicker off

:59:38.:59:41.

her own serve. Pironkova needing that extra shot. But what I find

:59:42.:59:50.

fascinating is that an grass she plays much faster than hard court

:59:51.:59:55.

and it is taking two extra shots to finish the points here. That is

:59:56.:00:00.

because of the dampness within the stadium, the moisture, it is putting

:00:01.:00:03.

a bit more weight on the ball. That is a fine comeback from

:00:04.:00:31.

Pironkova. Defended two set points. She is asking the question of her

:00:32.:00:35.

opponent. If you want this set, serve it out. Just looking at some

:00:36.:00:42.

of the quality of these points. The last point, incredible. The way

:00:43.:00:49.

Bencic is so confident off her return. This is a good serve, just

:00:50.:00:56.

look how far out wider she is. She rips it down the line, Pironkova

:00:57.:01:00.

having to come up with something, another level. A terrific forehand,

:01:01.:01:04.

which is not her strength on that side. She is having to play some

:01:05.:01:09.

really solid tennis just to hang in here and try to get a game. This is

:01:10.:01:15.

a great performance from Belinda Bencic. In another 12 months, if she

:01:16.:01:19.

can have a full 12 months are playing solid tennis, Bencic. We

:01:20.:01:26.

could look at a win at Wimbledon next year or the following year. I

:01:27.:01:31.

would really think that is going to happen for sure. At the moment,

:01:32.:01:35.

Serena and Muguruza are still leading the charge at in another 12

:01:36.:01:39.

months, if she doesn't have that gap she had this year. This young lady

:01:40.:01:44.

is going to win this tournament for sure. Centre Court under the roof,

:01:45.:01:52.

fourth match here today on day three of the Championships. First week.

:01:53.:02:00.

Bit of a bonus for the Centre Court crowd and those watching at home. It

:02:01.:02:04.

has been a mixed bag for those who have made their way here today with

:02:05.:02:09.

mother nature intervene in. That is the polite way of putting it. We are

:02:10.:02:18.

in England. Serving for the first set, 5-2.

:02:19.:02:41.

What is so beautiful about that backhand is she disguises it so

:02:42.:02:47.

well. One time ripping it crosscourt and then she delivers down the line.

:02:48.:02:53.

Look at her hands, stays low again and gets her body weight moving

:02:54.:02:56.

forward. I love looking at that outside leg. If you can just get

:02:57.:03:04.

players moving and setting up the shots with their feet as well as

:03:05.:03:09.

Belinda Bencic, it is remarkable. It is flying off the centre of the

:03:10.:03:25.

racket, isn't it? It is a lesson. It is amazing how she is playing. A

:03:26.:03:32.

total of 17 winners in this first set alone for Belinda Bencic, an

:03:33.:03:34.

astonishing figure. Anything you can do... Pironkova can

:03:35.:03:53.

do a little bit better. That is exactly what she needs to start

:03:54.:03:58.

doing. Use the line more, be more aggressive and try to dictate from

:03:59.:04:02.

that first shot. Don't let Bencic control.

:04:03.:04:37.

Where did that come from from Pironkova? Again, just looking for

:04:38.:04:50.

opportunities here. Trying to mix it up a little bit, hast to change it

:04:51.:04:58.

up a bit. She has saved two set points, can she say one more?

:04:59.:05:07.

No, that is your lot. Belinda Bencic taking control, not offering any

:05:08.:05:21.

more chances, she closes at the first set here in 35 minutes, 6-2.

:05:22.:05:27.

STUDIO: She knew this would be a tough first round and she is playing

:05:28.:05:32.

her top game at the moment. Bencic comfortably takes the first set 6-2.

:05:33.:05:37.

Centre Court continues under the roof I am sorry to say that outside,

:05:38.:05:42.

all of those spectators patiently waiting for play to resume on

:05:43.:05:46.

outside courts, the rain is falling quite heavily. It is quite dark,

:05:47.:05:50.

they will lose the light soon as well. The covers are on, no

:05:51.:05:54.

immediate prospect of play I am afraid. We will remain hopeful

:05:55.:05:59.

because they can play here if the clouds clear a little bit up until

:06:00.:06:05.

about 9p outside. Nobody giving up just yet. Whether we will get any

:06:06.:06:09.

more play this evening on the outside courts but great we will

:06:10.:06:12.

have play an centre, let go back there.

:06:13.:06:18.

COMMENTATOR: It is the positioning of Bencic that we have been

:06:19.:06:25.

impressed with in the first 35 minutes. How low she gets to the

:06:26.:06:29.

ball and how she is committed to the shot. For a player who has barely

:06:30.:06:35.

played any tennis. She is buying some terrific tennis out here,

:06:36.:06:43.

really enjoyable to watch. If you are Pironkova, what are you thinking

:06:44.:06:50.

here? Getting up after a two minute break to press that reset button. We

:06:51.:06:57.

have seen a few short balls, she has not mixed it up much in the first

:06:58.:07:00.

set, what will she be thinking now? There is an example of what Bencic

:07:01.:07:15.

is doing to Pironkova. She has to take a leaf out of that book, she

:07:16.:07:20.

needs to try and go down the line a little bit earlier in rallies. She

:07:21.:07:25.

is not able to control as quickly as Belinda. As we saw before, the

:07:26.:07:33.

average rally is 5.5 with Pironkova and 4.4 with Bencic.

:07:34.:07:49.

Belinda can just open up the court a lot better than Pironkova. Hope

:07:50.:07:58.

forehand crosscourt is more powerful, she is getting the short

:07:59.:08:04.

ball back and going for the line early.

:08:05.:08:53.

She didn't get it right on that occasion, Bencic. But how she can

:08:54.:08:59.

get that ball to penetrate through on the forehand. A little bit

:09:00.:09:06.

unlucky the butt that is what she is trying to set up. The pattern of

:09:07.:09:07.

play. And the other area where Belinda

:09:08.:09:32.

Bencic is so good. She has to come into the net 14 times and has

:09:33.:09:37.

executed on that is a good conversion rate. Pironkova just four

:09:38.:09:42.

times she has tried to move forwards.

:09:43.:10:02.

That is a fabulous comeback, great tennis.

:10:03.:10:18.

The other thing that is also interesting with Belinda Bencic, she

:10:19.:10:24.

really likes to move forward in the court. She wants to take that

:10:25.:10:29.

contact mice and early. 14 times she has come in but she is a good metre

:10:30.:10:34.

inside the net so she is pressing all the time. That is terrific

:10:35.:10:45.

quality, just one metre back, everything is looking to move

:10:46.:10:48.

forwards. That is great stuff for her and great as a shunning and

:10:49.:10:51.

mentality for grass. She just has to weather the storm,

:10:52.:11:13.

Pironkova. She has to hope that Bencic cannot keep this level up for

:11:14.:11:18.

another set. She has to be optimistic here.

:11:19.:11:30.

That is where she has got to be a little more assertive. She needs to

:11:31.:11:37.

try and press and move in the court a little bit more. Just doesn't have

:11:38.:11:45.

the weight of shot that Bencic has. She needs to take that step

:11:46.:11:53.

forwards. That is just ridiculously good. So good from Bencic. Again,

:11:54.:12:01.

her legs. She gets down so low. She neutralises this ball, terrific.

:12:02.:12:07.

That is perfect for grass court tennis.

:12:08.:12:20.

Those are the kind of shots that Pironkova has to make. Not just get

:12:21.:12:29.

back but do something with them. She is getting frustrated because the

:12:30.:12:35.

Bencic is playing so well, she can hit a good shot but it comes back

:12:36.:12:36.

with more on it. Right idea but let down in the

:12:37.:12:55.

execution. Just getting a little frustrated and

:12:56.:14:39.

impatient with that forehand. The forehand sits up a little bit more

:14:40.:14:44.

for Pironkova. She has to use a backhand and get the ball a bit flat

:14:45.:14:49.

and hard into the backhand side of Bencic, to then open up the court.

:14:50.:15:15.

Bencic is playing so subtly as well. Every so often she is going to fire

:15:16.:15:26.

down a thunderbolt. She's always keeping her opponent guessing. Isn't

:15:27.:15:33.

that a terrific view of the roof? So great that they can play here at

:15:34.:15:37.

Wimbledon. It was very frustrating at the French Open.

:15:38.:15:44.

She's down. It was really frustrating at the French Open,

:15:45.:15:52.

there were a couple of days when it just rained nonstop. Just to know

:15:53.:15:57.

that there is absolutely no tennis... Just seeing that slip by

:15:58.:16:01.

Bencic, the right foot just not gripping.

:16:02.:16:21.

So it easy to slip in the early days of the tournament as well,

:16:22.:16:28.

particularly when there is a bit of moisture on the court, sap in the

:16:29.:16:34.

grass. Particularly as players have to get used to a different style of

:16:35.:16:38.

footwork, the smaller steps, the adjusting steps.

:16:39.:16:45.

She reads this like a book, doesn't she? That is just such good

:16:46.:17:04.

returning. We've seen that time and time again. Another break point here

:17:05.:17:07.

for Bencic. Oh! So close. That really would have

:17:08.:17:24.

been amazing. She's got to keep the amount of

:17:25.:18:47.

balls in court, Pironkova. A high percentage of balls in, just

:18:48.:18:53.

frustrate Belinda a little. We've seen a couple of errors starting to

:18:54.:18:55.

creep in. That's another error, that is

:18:56.:19:22.

frustration. It's a long rally, but that is the sequence that Pironkova

:19:23.:19:29.

really needs to trust. She has to use that backhand more often,

:19:30.:19:34.

penetrate into Bencic's backhand. If she can make the rally is more like

:19:35.:19:39.

this, keep pushing Bencic around a bit, physically perhaps tire her a

:19:40.:19:42.

bit. Pironkova can run all year. Good game to win for Pironkova. She

:19:43.:19:57.

was broken early in the first set, she couldn't afford to be broken

:19:58.:19:59.

early in the second. brought three just in the bottom

:20:00.:20:21.

corner of the picture, where we should have been before the change.

:20:22.:20:27.

You can see Court Number One just in the distance. By 2019, that one will

:20:28.:20:35.

have a roof as well. The roof will be taken off there and year by year

:20:36.:20:42.

they will slowly make it ready. That will certainly help beat the battle

:20:43.:20:47.

with nature, won't it? Well, yeah. It's tough for everybody but it

:20:48.:20:51.

would certainly be great for these and spectators to watch more than

:20:52.:20:55.

one match and least. We are watching Centre Court. Like I said, at the

:20:56.:21:02.

French Open this year it was really frustrating not to have any action.

:21:03.:21:06.

You could feel the frustration with everybody walking around, just

:21:07.:21:07.

trying to find something to do. Interesting half of the draw, this

:21:08.:21:20.

one. Belinda Bencic in the same half as Serena Williams. Potential, if

:21:21.:21:31.

everything goes to plan, for her to meet in the semifinal. That's going

:21:32.:21:37.

to be an interesting one, for her. I'm sure plenty of other players

:21:38.:21:39.

have an opinion on that! Terrific anticipation here from

:21:40.:22:03.

Pironkova. That was a really tough volley to get up. Belinda did a

:22:04.:22:12.

great job of just trying to somehow get that volley over.

:22:13.:22:19.

It's just superb tennis. Spreads the court so well, opens the court up so

:22:20.:22:29.

wide with the serve and that leaves a big gap down the line for her to

:22:30.:22:33.

play into. Such simple but effective tennis.

:22:34.:23:09.

Didn't quite get to the pitch of that. Is just held up a bit and she

:23:10.:23:17.

didn't use her feet to take the one extra step. The contact is a bit

:23:18.:23:21.

low, she should have been another one or two feet inside the court.

:23:22.:23:33.

Wow! Look at that from Bencic. That was coming at a rate of knots. Soft

:23:34.:23:42.

hands. This is terrific tennis. What a shot from Pironkova. That just

:23:43.:23:49.

went through the air so quickly. She got the ball to dip and that's what

:23:50.:23:53.

you want, but just terrific hands from Bencic.

:23:54.:24:20.

Well, the quality of this match, James, is really, really high. I'm

:24:21.:24:35.

so impressed with the way both of these girls are playing, but Belinda

:24:36.:24:38.

Bencic, she's just a standout. Pironkova, this is her 14th season

:24:39.:24:51.

on the tour. So much experience, she's going to need every ounce of

:24:52.:24:53.

it here. Well, it's the teenager doing all

:24:54.:25:14.

the running, isn't it? Virtually every shot is right out of the meat

:25:15.:25:20.

of the racket. There is not one shot that Bencic isn't being effective

:25:21.:25:24.

on. From the middle of the court, she is splitting the court really

:25:25.:25:28.

well. She can go off with the backhand, she can go on with the

:25:29.:25:32.

forehand, she can go into the corners really well. So many layers

:25:33.:25:36.

get stuck playing in the middle of the court. -- so many players.

:25:37.:26:47.

APPLAUSE Well, that is hard, isn't it? When

:26:48.:26:58.

the forehand is going for the line for Pironkova, it's hard for her to

:26:59.:27:02.

move over quickly to the backhand and get outside the ball. Just

:27:03.:27:09.

skewing away from her racket. She's saved two break points in the last

:27:10.:27:13.

service game and she has got another two to save here.

:27:14.:27:25.

A demonstration of complete tennis here from Belinda Bencic.

:27:26.:27:41.

Frighteningly talented at just 19 years of age. Well, I think we knew,

:27:42.:27:48.

didn't we, when she was 17 years of age she won St Petersburg, hurt and

:27:49.:27:52.

Bosch, Tokyo. She can play on all surfaces. She's

:27:53.:28:03.

certainly one of the marketable players on the WTA Tour and she's

:28:04.:28:07.

going to be around for a long time. -- one of the marquee players.

:28:08.:28:14.

Amazing, look at that. And on the move, such a hard shot to hit. Such

:28:15.:28:23.

a smooth player, getting the racket nice and early back. As we saw

:28:24.:28:28.

before, positioning is key for her. She's always looking to move

:28:29.:28:34.

forwards. This one stays low. Judged with precision, down the line. Just

:28:35.:28:39.

incredible intuition for a young tennis player. She's so smart and

:28:40.:28:45.

she understands the dimensions of the court extremely well. The

:28:46.:28:49.

youngest player to break into the top ten since 2009. Just slightly

:28:50.:28:55.

fallen out because of injury problems to her back and then to her

:28:56.:28:59.

thigh. She is seeded number seven here. With the break in the second

:29:00.:29:05.

set. -- try that for size! This is a good

:29:06.:29:25.

option for Pironkova at the moment. If I was her I would be trying to

:29:26.:29:30.

change it up, change the pace, variation. That is smart play. That

:29:31.:29:37.

was better than an English kick, wasn't it? Did that hurt? You've

:29:38.:29:41.

been waiting for that for a long time!

:29:42.:29:43.

CHUCKLES I shouldn't say things like that, I

:29:44.:29:56.

should keep it a lot more Switzerland. Should be more neutral!

:29:57.:30:03.

Bencic, where is she from... Are you here all week?

:30:04.:30:06.

CHUCKLES Haven't seen a hick up from her yet,

:30:07.:30:24.

have we, Bencic? Terrific focus. She has been staying on track so far.

:30:25.:30:46.

Just catches the line. She's going to be rewarded if she has that

:30:47.:30:53.

mentality. She needs to keep looking for that ball to be a bit more

:30:54.:30:56.

aggressive of the forehand and then come forwards. This is not an easy

:30:57.:31:01.

shot either. We've seen a couple of times she hits the smash off the

:31:02.:31:03.

bounce. Oh! Wow. Another one. Well, if

:31:04.:31:24.

Serena Williams is watching this, she will be starting to think gosh,

:31:25.:31:29.

this player is really seeing it extremely well. This is fabulous

:31:30.:31:36.

grass court tennis. Look at that, such good balance. Nice early

:31:37.:31:37.

timing. And of course Serena Williams knows

:31:38.:31:55.

all about Belinda Bencic, because Bencic beat her en route to winning

:31:56.:32:01.

the title in Toronto last summer. She also beat Simona Halep and

:32:02.:32:05.

Eugenie Bouchard. Talk about turning points, that was a huge one for her.

:32:06.:32:12.

Yeah, nice touch there. Wow, there's nothing you can do about that. Does

:32:13.:32:43.

she believe, Louise? Does Pironkova believe she can beat Belinda Bencic

:32:44.:32:47.

on this sort of form? Well, you would have to think so. She's never

:32:48.:32:49.

beaten her before, but... -- spoiling us. Her dad approves of

:32:50.:33:09.

yellow yes, she plays points like this and goes out after and tries to

:33:10.:33:15.

get Bencic moving. Belinda Bencic is not one of the best movers on the

:33:16.:33:19.

tour. Her anticipation is incredible, her intuition is

:33:20.:33:22.

fabulous, but the movement, not so much.

:33:23.:33:27.

You've got to be kidding me! What a shot from Belinda Bencic! Well, this

:33:28.:33:40.

is incredible. Her end range control is just really just amazing. Look at

:33:41.:33:46.

that. Sometimes you just have to stand and applaud, don't you?

:33:47.:34:11.

That's the second one for Pironkova. Is it for Bencic -- Zip for Bencic:

:34:12.:34:28.

none for her. It's just pressure, building up on her. Serve has been

:34:29.:34:31.

fairly consistent. She it now. -- her serve has been fairly

:34:32.:34:41.

consistent. She needs it now. Oh dear.

:34:42.:34:47.

Well, I think we're just seeing an example of the new generation of

:34:48.:34:57.

players. This is the mentality and this is the mindset that the players

:34:58.:35:02.

like Garbine Muguruza and Belinda Bencic, this is what is going to win

:35:03.:35:09.

them Wimbledon one day. Muguruza is already getting very close last

:35:10.:35:15.

year. Last year when Muguruza played Angelique Kerber, she attempted to

:35:16.:35:22.

come in 75 times, something around that number. She executed something

:35:23.:35:28.

like 50 times. That is where she has got the added advantage. The

:35:29.:35:32.

willingness to move forwards. She's come into the net 20 times today in

:35:33.:35:38.

this match and executed 13. If she's willing to do that more and more,

:35:39.:35:44.

that's where I think the new trend of Wimbledon player has two B. A big

:35:45.:35:53.

summer awaits her. If all goes to plan, she will be heading off to

:35:54.:35:56.

Rio. I think Stan Wawrinka is in line to

:35:57.:36:05.

partner her in the Mixed Doubles. That's quite a combination. Here she

:36:06.:36:09.

is, 5-2, serving for the match. You can't blame her for looking for

:36:10.:36:33.

that drop shot. She can't beat her in any other avenue.

:36:34.:37:09.

Oh yes! Pironkova is not done yet. Fantastic fighting spirit. Well, she

:37:10.:37:27.

did everything right in this rally apart from smashing through the

:37:28.:37:32.

middle of the court. She just sort of went to one of the open sides and

:37:33.:37:34.

paid the price. That is what Pironkova will be

:37:35.:38:48.

hoping, that perhaps Bencic might just tighten up a fraction here.

:38:49.:38:55.

Wow. Brilliant first serve, sent straight down the T. Band match

:38:56.:39:06.

point to boot. -- and match point. Oh! It was written, wasn't it? And

:39:07.:39:12.

that just didn't follow the script. She just does that pattern so well,

:39:13.:39:58.

Belinda Bencic. Serving wide to the forehand, getting that big space to

:39:59.:40:07.

hit into. Second attempt, to round up the match.

:40:08.:40:10.

Whoa! Hello, where have you gone? That first serve was only 95 mph.

:40:11.:40:27.

Again, that pattern, serve wide, open the court into the backhand.

:40:28.:40:45.

All day Bencic has done that. Is it a case of third time lucky?

:40:46.:40:58.

You can forgive her for feeling the tension here. Desperate to put this

:40:59.:41:16.

one away, get her Wimbledon campaign off to a flying start.

:41:17.:41:33.

That's about the first time I haven't seen Belinda really use her

:41:34.:41:40.

feet well there, just a little sluggish. She didn't take those

:41:41.:41:47.

extra little steps. Again, this is where Pironkova, if she can just

:41:48.:41:51.

stay there mentally, she is just feeling the tension on the racket of

:41:52.:41:53.

Bencic. What has she got left? Wow. That's more like it from

:41:54.:42:23.

Bencic. Must have been just a momentary blip! 'S brave playing,

:42:24.:42:29.

it's such self belief that Belinda Bencic is playing with.

:42:30.:42:53.

That was brave, equally brave from a wrong cover.

:42:54.:43:00.

-- from Pironkova. Massive from baseline to baseline. You could read

:43:01.:43:07.

the writing on the wall, couldn't you? So flat. Just so much spin on

:43:08.:43:12.

that. She's made it! And listen to the

:43:13.:43:30.

crowd! They want more. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:43:31.:43:37.

Can she find a way? Will Bencic let her?

:43:38.:43:48.

Change of racket, perhaps. That might be the answer. Well, its new

:43:49.:44:01.

balls for Peron -- Pironkova. She will have to be very happy with

:44:02.:44:02.

that, Pironkova. And that first mistake on the first

:44:03.:44:51.

opening shot of this game is now proving costly. It is a good return.

:44:52.:44:57.

She can just get the end of the racket under the ball, a slice

:44:58.:44:59.

return. I have seen that a couple of times

:45:00.:45:21.

in the last two games. She didn't hit that shot with any

:45:22.:46:31.

conviction. A consummate professional,

:46:32.:47:43.

exceptional performance from Belinda Bencic. She set out her stall early

:47:44.:47:53.

and she never let it slip. Could she be the one to spring a few surprises

:47:54.:47:59.

over the coming fortnight? Look at that smile. She is so comfortable

:48:00.:48:04.

out here today. It was an exceptional performance. She did not

:48:05.:48:08.

put a foot wrong throughout the whole match. Just little hiccup when

:48:09.:48:13.

she was serving for the match, but her ability to turn that background,

:48:14.:48:18.

come back and play an aggressive returning game, I really thought on

:48:19.:48:26.

Cavell would hold serve there. But what a performance from Bencic.

:48:27.:48:30.

There is the announcement that there will be another match and the crowd

:48:31.:48:34.

are loving that. They are so excited. They will get more tennis.

:48:35.:48:43.

-- I really thought Pironkova would hold serve. Belinda Bencic was so

:48:44.:48:49.

comfortable. I am very impressed. I think 2016 here at Wimbledon could

:48:50.:48:53.

be a little surprise for this lady. She will go into the second round

:48:54.:48:59.

where she will play an American qualifier. If she keeps on playing

:49:00.:49:04.

like that, a semifinal against Serena Williams could well be in

:49:05.:49:13.

store. The Centre Court crowd are pretty ecstatic. They are getting

:49:14.:49:20.

another match. Belinda Bencic's days finished and she can afford a little

:49:21.:49:29.

jig to finish. People on the phone saying, do you know what, you know I

:49:30.:49:33.

said I would be home at 8:30pm, I think I will stay for a little more.

:49:34.:49:41.

Let's hear from our winner, Belinda Bencic, eight consummate

:49:42.:49:45.

professional through in easy style. Here she is with Gary Richardson.

:49:46.:49:52.

Many congratulations. What a thrill for you on Centre Court. A dream

:49:53.:49:59.

came true. It was my dream to play on Centre Court and to win. That I

:50:00.:50:05.

could play today meant so much to me. The lovely thing for you, during

:50:06.:50:12.

the Roger Federer match which happened earlier, they took you out

:50:13.:50:15.

there to show you what it is like. There was a huge cheer and you went,

:50:16.:50:20.

oh my goodness, this is so exciting! Tell me about that moment. The

:50:21.:50:26.

supervisor told me I am going to play on Centre Court and she took me

:50:27.:50:30.

down to see the atmosphere. Roger won the point and it was really good

:50:31.:50:35.

response. I was really happy. Sorry for the opponent but I was really

:50:36.:50:40.

happy that Roger could play in three sets. For you today, what a

:50:41.:50:47.

fantastic win. With such a range of shots, you have played so well. I

:50:48.:50:52.

was totally focused. I cannot explain why I have played so good

:50:53.:50:57.

but I feel that this will be my court hopefully soon and I felt so

:50:58.:51:02.

comfortable. Very well done, great match, thank you. Thank you very

:51:03.:51:06.

much. SUE BARKER: It really was a very

:51:07.:51:11.

good match. She enjoyed herself on Centre Court. I think we will see

:51:12.:51:16.

how many more times out there. She is certainly one who could go deep

:51:17.:51:20.

into the tournament, not just this year but for many years to come.

:51:21.:51:26.

Belinda Bencic, putting out a very difficult opponent today, Pironkova.

:51:27.:51:30.

She goes through and it is great having someone like Martina Hingis

:51:31.:51:38.

in your corner as well. Well, they have put another match on. You will

:51:39.:51:46.

be able to see it on the red button because they will not be on for ten

:51:47.:51:55.

minutes and we will be off air at 830 PM when it will be Today at

:51:56.:52:07.

Wimbledon with Clare Balding, John McEnroe and Lindsay Davenport. There

:52:08.:52:13.

was a frustrating day with the rain. They will be following the fortunes

:52:14.:52:20.

of Heather Watson, Johanna Konta and Marcus Willis. We have heard

:52:21.:52:24.

tomorrow they will be starting play earlier at 11am because there are

:52:25.:52:31.

still 15 first matches to be completed. There is a lot of

:52:32.:52:38.

catching up to do. We are on the air at 11:30am but if you want a junior

:52:39.:52:47.

in at 11 o'clock you can on line and on the red button. There is also

:52:48.:52:52.

commentary on the radio. This is the scene here. It is typical. They have

:52:53.:52:59.

got the covers on but it is not raining. I cannot believe they are

:53:00.:53:05.

watering the courts! Anyway, we are going to take you to a match which

:53:06.:53:11.

started out on Court Number Two earlier today. It features Dan

:53:12.:53:16.

Evans, here's the big friend of Marcus Willis. He is up against

:53:17.:53:21.

Alexander Dolgopolov and he is leading 4-3. It is going on serve.

:53:22.:53:25.

Our commentators are Jamie Baker and Barry Davies.

:53:26.:54:20.

JAMIE BAKER: A great example of the new balls there.

:54:21.:55:01.

BARRY DAVIES: Jeff! CHEERING

:55:02.:55:06.

For get the Gasquets and Wawrinkas of the world. Look at that.

:55:07.:56:04.

That gives some tale of his confidence.

:56:05.:57:43.

Came in very quickly then after his serve.

:57:44.:58:25.

Dolgopolov was already walking up court to take his seat! He just knew

:58:26.:59:56.

there was no way he would get the ball back, but he might have caught

:59:57.:00:03.

the eye of his opponent. Slightly more difficult game that one. Yes,

:00:04.:00:12.

it was. He is in trouble at 15-30. Although the wind unquestionable got

:00:13.:00:19.

up, that serve was on the last point when he walked into the net, but the

:00:20.:00:27.

point I was trying to make at 15-30 was Evans with a slower first serve,

:00:28.:00:33.

98 mph, which shows how clearly he is thinking Dolgopolov is using his

:00:34.:00:35.

pace of the first serve. Beautiful understanding from

:00:36.:01:40.

Dolgopolov. Just knowing in these conditions that short ball is going

:01:41.:01:41.

to die. No threat to the Ukrainian. Very

:01:42.:03:04.

quick service action when he wants to get an extra bit of power.

:03:05.:03:16.

There is every chance the conditions are getting worse. The wind

:03:17.:03:23.

presumably would help to drive the court? It seems there are spots of

:03:24.:03:36.

rain falling constantly. It is not moving the weather vane very much.

:03:37.:03:47.

He is a good umpire, Bernardes. He understands the problem. There is

:03:48.:04:13.

no, I am telling you to play on. He knows it is a difficult test for the

:04:14.:04:15.

players. He made that look ridiculously

:04:16.:04:41.

simple! Really very well played. Difficult to make the case it is

:04:42.:04:45.

slippery when you can control as well as that. This is a stunning

:04:46.:04:48.

touch from Evans. I know he missed this volley but it

:04:49.:06:28.

is really sharp movement from Evans, seeing Dolgopolov is opening his

:06:29.:06:31.

face, it is definitely the right tactics for Evans.

:06:32.:07:19.

Mark Hilton in the front row. The coach of Dan Evans. Yes, somebody

:07:20.:07:31.

who has helped Dan at various points in his career. Next to him, Nathan

:07:32.:07:35.

Rooney in the red. This is the option Evans has. He has

:07:36.:08:38.

the ability to play such direct tennis and there is not a lot

:08:39.:08:39.

Dolgopolov can do. Lucky at the end. A rally of some

:08:40.:09:21.

quality that. Some fish are slicing from both

:09:22.:09:32.

players. -- vicious. He has put it out. What a chance for

:09:33.:10:14.

Dan Evans. They are still not happy, Dolgopolov

:10:15.:11:20.

in particular. SUE BARKER: The umpire got involved

:11:21.:11:25.

and the supervisor got involved, but they asked them to play an even

:11:26.:11:30.

though the rain was falling. One more point was played. The set is

:11:31.:11:35.

tied at six games all. That is when they decided there would be no play.

:11:36.:11:40.

Six games all. When they come back tomorrow they will be at the start

:11:41.:11:48.

of the tie-break. Just 46 minutes played before the rain came down.

:11:49.:11:54.

That was earlier today, but there are still play going under way. You

:11:55.:11:59.

can see the lights on under Centre Court. Eugenie Bouchard is up

:12:00.:12:05.

against Magdalena Rabada Cove. Time for me to say goodbye. Today at

:12:06.:12:21.

Wimbledon is next and Clare will be here. So much to look back on with

:12:22.:12:28.

Marcus Willis and Johanna Konta. Lindsay Davenport and John McEnroe

:12:29.:12:33.

will be with Clare for that. Play gets underway tomorrow at 11 o'clock

:12:34.:12:38.

so you can follow it on the red button and you can also follow it on

:12:39.:12:43.

connected TV, on the app and online. All of that tomorrow. We are told

:12:44.:12:48.

the weather will be a lot better. We will be on the air from 11:30am on

:12:49.:12:52.

BBC Two. For now, from me, good night.

:12:53.:13:04.

On the 30th of June, we'll be coming together

:13:05.:13:14.

to commemorate the centenery of the Battle of the Somme.

:13:15.:13:18.
