Day 7, Part 4 Wimbledon

When you've got a guy like that, you follow them. SUE BARKER: There were

many calls of command, Andy, all centre port -- all-around Centre

Court. He knows how important this victory is against a dangerous

opponent in Nick Kyrgios spot in the last two sets, he gave him a real

tennis lesson. These two are good friends but today it was all Andy

Murray. Nick Kyrgios could not find a way through him. Centre Court

delighted to see their man getting better and better as he is going

through the Championships. Yet to drop a set. Through to the

quarterfinals, his ninth year at Wimbledon. Well done to Andy Murray

and let's hear what he had to say after the match. Congratulations.

Another straight sets win. No disrespects to Nick Kyrgios but was

that more comfortable than you expected? The second set was. The

first set was tight. I managed to get the break at 6-5, but it was

very tight up till that point. The second set was more comfortable.

Nick lost focus in the middle part of the set which made it easier. But

the third set, again, he served a high percentage. But when I was able

to get the ball back in play, I was able to dictate the rallies and I

managed to get an early break. And whether you like it or not,

expectation on you is growing. Is that easy to ignore or do you need

help from the likes of Ivan Lendl? I don't know, I mean every year I play

here and it is not any different this year than it has been any of

the other years I have been here. I try my best to win my matches and go

as deep as possible. I have been playing well so far in this event.

But the matches, as you progress, get tougher. I am playing Tsonga

next, who is a top grass court player. And you have played him

twice in Wimbledon, in the semis in 2012 in the quarters in 2010. You

won both those matches. Does that record had any bearing on what

happens when you face in the quarterfinals? You can learn from

the matches that you play, trying to execute the things that work well

when you play him the next time, but every match is different. If you put

in a bad performance, you can easily lose. I have to try to keep up my

own form, and if I play less focused -- as focused as I did today, I

should be OK. Now that performances so far. Well done and good luck. SUE

BARKER: Another player who was focus today was Serena Williams, first on

Centre Court, up against Svetlana Kuznetsova. And it was a tricky

match, a difficult first set for the world number one. She was a break of

serve down, but then came out and won nine straight games. Serena

Williams is the road but she certainly was not happy with the

conditions on Centre Court. She was finishing this match under the roof.

No big celebration from Serena. But she is thrilled to be through to

another quarterfinal here. I mentioned she was not happy with the

conditions, and she was asked about playing in the rain. Listen to this.

That was when she was asked to continue to play on in that match

against Kuznetsova. And she was asked about it in the press

conference after. Let's hear what she had to say.

You are the second player in the tournaments to threaten to sue over

the rain coming down and play continuing. Do you think the

tournament are taking the welfare of the players seriously when it comes

to the rain? I think they are doing a great job with that. Threatening a

lawsuit is quite an extreme measure. You guys, don't even try me like

that. It was in the mind and I was on court. Whether I am smashing my

racket on court, it is in the heat of the moment. I have no plans to

sue Wimbledon. Let's get serious, that is not what I do and it is not

what I am. So that is the end of the story for Serena. She is through to

the quarterfinals, facing Anastacia Pavlik changeover of Russia

tomorrow. Serena is through on Centre Court but on Court Number

One, Venus is also through, winning 7-6, 6-4 against Carlos Suarez

Navarro. Venus, the oldest player in the Championships at 36. Playing

some of her best tennis for years. Through to a 12th quarterfinal, and

what a way to finish it. Her first quarterfinal appearance since 2010.

Serena is certainly back. Back into the world's top ten yet again and

thoroughly enjoying it. The Williams sisters both enjoy the competition

here, the family watching as well. They are such a close family, such a

close unit. Venus Williams is safely through to the next round.

The number one Court crowd thoroughly enjoying a match. So now

we have some live tennis for you, one more match from this magic

Monday, and it is an old Czech affair between Jiri Vesely, the six

foot six big server up against Tomas Berdych. As you can see, it is one

set all. 3-2 to Jiri Vesely. UMPIRE: New balls, please. The same

picture on the scoreboard once again. Remaining on serve in this

third set. Tied at 1-1. This contest is intricately poised. This man

playing some fantastic tennis. Only one service break each way. But it

was broken in the first game of the first set, rather inauspicious start

for the ten seed. And that proved to be decisive. Vesely was broken in

the eighth game of the second set. Broderick held serve to prevail in

the second set, 6-3, with no service breaks either way. -- Tomas Berdych.

In the second set, Tomas Berdych took nine minutes to ultimately hold

serve. 30-0 up and then three consecutive forehand errors. Vesely

secured the break, which he ultimately saw off in nine minutes

of play. Some fantastic variety on the Vesely

server. 133 mph down the centre. The left-handed slice has been in

evidence as well. UMPIRE: Mr Vesely is challenging the

coal on the near side. The ball was called out. It has been a long

tournament. His voice box just beginning to fail.

We posed the question after Vesely was broken in the penultimate game

of the second set, what proved to be the penultimate game, about how he

would bounce back. But there has been no hangover from that minor

disappointment, he has just continued with the same incredibly

high level of play throughout. And if anything his serving has gone up

a gear. Tomas Berdych really struggling to get any momentum on

the service game in this third set. The first hour or so was so

impressive from the young Czech. It was really one-way traffic. Tomas

Berdych having some problems in the baseline exchanges because of the

angle that he is able to create. Especially from the forehand. But

really in the last 20 or 25 minutes, a slight change of tactics from

Tomas Berdych. Any chance he gets, coming forward into the net. He has

had a lot of success when he has done that. It was the first set that

Vesely had conceded all tournament. That is why I referred to it as a

disappointment when he showed no hangover from that slight setback.

82 for Vesely, first serve percentage.

He has approached the net with terrific effectiveness throughout

the course of this match, Tomas Berdych.

A rare outburst from Berdych. In the doubles alley with that final ground

stroke the point. some sloppy errors coming in again.

Once again, Tomas Berdych unable to get any purchase into the service

game of Vesely. A solid hold of serve.

So into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his

career. Thomas Berdych, one of six top ten players to make it through

to the stage. Vesely one of the three arms seeded players to make it

through to the last 16. Johnson, Mahut and the 23-year-old. He

started playing tennis at the age of format by imitating his dad, who was

also named Jiri. He started by hitting against the wall. His dad's

coaching operation took into Germany which is where Tomas Berdych spent

his formative years. Until grade six. He speaks fluent German. Such a

talented junior. The world junior champion in 2011. The same year that

he took the Boys' Singles and doubles titles at the Australian

Open. Use all the big doubles gold the year before that.

A very good pick up, forehand from Tomas Berdych. He might have found

it easier to back off and play that as a conventional forehand. Just

another example of how his tactical decision-making has changed in this

match. He is keen to get forward as much as he can.

A service holds to love for Tomas Berdych.

He would desperately love to fashion a service break opportunity here.

Deadlocked once more, five games all. Vesely to serve.

A wonderful drop shot, almost audacious from Vesely. Such

fantastic variety. There is only been a handful of drop shots from

the racket of Vesely today, making it almost impossible for Berdych to

read it. If you use anywhere late setting off, he has no chance. -- if

he is anywhere late. 14 for Vesely now.

Oh my goodness. He could not hit it high enough. A racket of apology

offered by Jiri Vesely. It works well on the last point so we

thought, I will try that again. Despite Berdych being six feet five,

he was backpedalling and he could not get up high enough to control

the head of the racket. I'm sure that is one that's Tomas

Berdych wishes he could take back. Approaching the two Aramark here. On

Court number three. Thomas Berdych, the Number Ten seed, is going to

have to serve to force a third set tie-break. A change in the whole

crew as Berdych sits down to gather his thoughts and take a drink. Fans

of all ages enjoying some wonderfully intense tennis here. And

what a bonus that we still have the last of the men's last 16 matches on

Court, and some great tennis. The match is finally poised. An

intriguing battle, very much a mental battle at this point. Neither

player playing their best tennis at the same time. This third set, so

pivotal. It is going to come down to one or two points. How will Vesely

approach this? Will he take some risks in an effort in to make some

-- in an effort to make some inroads on Berdych's serve?

UMPIRE: Correction. You don't need to shout. Mr Vesely is challenging

the call. He may be struggling with his voice today, but he is

overruling correctly. 100% accurate. And so it proves once again.

UMPIRE: Mr Vesely has one challenge remaining.

What a terrific point. Returning fantastically. He recovered

wonderfully. That shocked they are, the defensive squash shot, dragging

him back into the point. And when he did get the chance with this back

and to take control, he really dominated.

Second double fault of the match for Berdych.

UMPIRE: Third set tie-break. Each player receives one additional

challenge. Berdych will be kicking himself

there. That was a good chance to assert his authority on this

tie-break. Not an error we would expect to see from Thomas Berdych.

The familiar combination that has served him so well, the big first

serve, and a powerful forehand to follow-up.

Well recovered by Thomas Berdych. Stamping up to the net very well

indeed. That was the wrong shot from Vesely. The drop shot was not on

there. He should've gone for the conventional crosscourt backhand,

that would have done the trick. There are rare miss it from the

forehand of Vesely. Berdych as a mini-break.

15 aces from obviously. Dash-macro three.

APPLAUSE. In his second-round match against the number eight seed,

Thessaly was on top in straight sets. -- Jiri Vesely. Down a

mini-break here, 4-2. Mike but less! You have to give the

man credit, he found the line. The first serves setting it up, look how

well he moves around to give himself the angle on the forehand. This was

slightly mis-hit and just dropping on the line.

5-4, Berdych. Berdych with the opportunity to serve it out here. A

mini-break to the good. Can he holds? To secure this third set.

He put it away but it was a mis-hit, from our vantage point.

6-4, Berdych. That brings out set point.

UMPIRE: 6-5, Berdych. So still set point for the Number 10 seed.

Obviously, to serve. -- Jiri Vesely to serve.

UMPIRE: Let, first serve. 132 mph down the centreline, ace

number 17. Deadlocked in every respect, symmetry on the scoreboard.

UMPIRE: 7-6, obviously. Now it is set point, Jiri Vesely. And the

Berdych serve. Just into the line from Jiri Vesely.

That was a very, very experienced shot from Tomas Berdych. Not an

obvious all but recognising the importance of the moment, asking the

question, can you hit the past? And he could not come up with it. -- the

past. Well watched from the Number 10

seed. And the same again, the serve setting up the short ball, not doing

much with the approach shot. Jiri Vesely had a rocket -- had a racket

on it but again unable to find the court. Set point, Berdych.

Not a time for a mis-hit, he can't believe it. Coming off frame, on the

Berdych serve. That was a brave second serve but just a bit of

additional tension in the arm. And the Number 10 seed Tomas Berdych

secures the third set on a tie-break. UMPIRE: 7-6, Berdych.

Sue Barker: Experience prevails and Berdych goes up to- one. We will

soon. But right now the court 17 and Britain's Jamie Murray, the World

Number 1 doubles partner and his partner Bruno Soares are locked in

battle in the fifth and final set Murray did set for the match show --

Murray did serve for the match but now it is 5-5. Let's join this.

It has been almost a four hour epic here on court 17. Bruno Soares in

your picture, serving. Twice, this team, the third seeds, have been up

a break of serve and denied, in -- immediately pegged back to level by

their opponents and the 16th seeds, Pavic and Venus, the Croatian and

New Zealand, nation that have played so well on return games especially.

When they have needed it most, they have come up with the goods and it

has been such a tense affair, watched on by Judy Murray.

They took the first two sets, Murray and Soares. Looking calm and

confident. But then they just lost their grip and they looked flat,

they were not communicating as much as before. And Venus and Pavic have

just grown in confidence. Fabulous by Jamie Murray! Michael

Venus just could not get to it. Just when you thought Pavic had done it

and had won the point, he gets back in the play, and Venus denied.

A good, clean game. We have not had many of those in this match.

Understandably as well, everybody is fighting tooth and nail. It has been

a really, really tight match throughout, especially this deciding

set. But as you said so eloquently, the higher seeds in Murray and

Soares, as Australian Open champions, have just gone off the

boil the last couple of sets and been wrestling with it to try and

claw it back their way. It has been a real grapple of a deciding set.

And these two have been Opera, break of serve twice. But unable to hold

on. Denied by some brilliance by their opponents. Jamie Murray had a

match point on his serve. And look, standing three, four rounds back,

after his brother made the quarterfinals, there was a rush to

try and find whatever places there were left. Now it is Pavic, of

Croatia, the birthday boy, 23 years of age today.

The serving team, the 16th seeds, have never been beyond the third

round at Wimbledon and just giving that at most to go further.

Fantastic lob from Soares, taking the pace away from it all together.

Jamie Murray, to remind you, is a finalist here last year with John

Peers. Just losing out in that final. So he is a multi--- so he has

a multitude of points to defend. That is how it has been! The entire

way through this deciding set. Just when you think the point is over, we

have seen incredible reflex volleys. It was just called wide. And there

is no Hawk-Eye on this court. It is all about trying to find that

first serve. Basically, it is who is going to blink first in this

deciding set. No one wants to succumb. And yield on their own

delivery. That was clever from Soares. He did not mean to hit his

opponent. But he knew that is the angle he had to get on the shot.

Just asking one more question. Great volley. Forehand with real

spike to it. Releasing the tip of the racket with explosive speed. And

just look at the time. Four hours here. Who has the bottle and the

self belief to get over the line? Well, it is not like a lot of these

doubles matches and you see serving dominance, we have seen a lot of

returned dominance. So a break at some stage shortly will appear. So

who will get the first? That is the question on everybody's whips around

court number 17. -- lip is. Look at that, three or four

clambering to get a glimpse of the World Number 1 doubles player

serving. Great interaction. Great instinctive response from Bruno

Soares. Who would be a parent? It is not bad having won some competing

here. The Murray family have got two! -- having one some competing.

Lovely moment as well that Judy and Willie can watch this doubles and

leave Andy to it on Centre Court against the Australian. Just got

away with that, Pavic! Mate Pavic had about a ten minute row with the

umpire earlier in the match and it inspired him, he played some of the

best tennis for the next 90 minutes. Funny how players can respond after

they get so worked up. And, of course, we should remind

anybody watching Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, they have only been

together since the turn of the year. I have already claimed the

Australian Open title, they won best first tour event together in Sydney.

That is right, they were runners-up in Monte Carlo, Rio semifinalists,

Jo Hart semifinalists, winning the big one, the Australian Open. The

opposing team as well -- the Jo Hart. That is the man in the blue

cap who has been with Jamie for ten years as a high-performance coach in

the Lawn Tennis Association and he is a master technician. Jamie would

love to hear snippets from that man in his ear right now. But not so,

coaching not allowed. A fabulous view of NSW 90, situated beyond

centre, between Centre Court and Number 1 Court. Still action for

those who have come to the second Monday. Michael Venus of New

Zealand, the man in your picture, charged with serving to stay in the

match. How about that for an opener? Spent a lot of his formative years

in the US college system. He had a very good record as all-American

champion in Oklahoma in 2008. A man of experience. He loves his doubles,

that is evident. I have been so good when they have been under pressure.

-- they have. The underdogs. And they have pulled this match back

from the brink time and again, Pavic and Venus. With an insistence that

they will not be denied. Incredible resilience.

Clever from Murray. Make your opponents play. And boy, did he make

it difficult! Yes, getting the ball down with great effect and closing

the net so quickly. What a point! That took real guts

from Soares and Murray and they defended that William Levay! --

brilliantly. That injection of pace from Mate

Pavic, the youngest man on the court, aged 23. Split, Croatia.

Spiking that away and deeming himself not to have clinched the

previous point. -- and redeeming himself for not having clinched the

previous point. Come on, Bruneau, you can do it!

Well, there is no doubt about it, heading towards the shot and of this

and it will be down the bottle and nerves. And who can master these

biggest moments. Great Bali from Pavic his eyes lit

up when it came to him and he just drilled it back at Bruno Soares. --

volley. Just another shrouded instruction

from the server to the volleyer. Who is going to blink first?

Astonishing courage from all the players here. 65 minutes, this set

alone. Seven games all. And they seem to love that dynamic of being

down in the set. They were in three and four and it did not make them

despondent, far from it, it seems to bring their best.

Great length volley from Bruno Soares. Pinning Pavic back into the

corner of court 17. Scoreboard parity. Jamie Murray once

again, eyes like a hawk. He has not been at his instinctive best. As you

say, his energy just liked after the first couple of sets, but now he is

back. And controlling that the net as he does so well when he is really

on form. -- that net. And he has to be like that because

Bruno Soares, as accurate as he is with the serve, he is only five foot

ten and doesn't have the quickest delivery. Sue Barker: We have to

leave this match on BBC Two, coming to the end of the programme. Today

at Wimbledon is next. It has been on four hours and ten minutes. You can

continue this on the red button. Whether they will finish the night,

we don't know. Acta court number three, the last remaining

fourth-round match in action and it is going the way of Tomas Berdych.

3-0 up in the fourth set and two sets in the lead. That is on the red

button. And one Mixed Doubles result, defending champions from

last year Leander Paes and Martina Hingis have gone through 6-4, 6-4

one Court Number One. Just to say that Claire is standing by with

today at Wimbledon. There is so much to talk about on this magical

Monday, the fourth-round matches in action. She will be joined by
