Welcome to the second Wednesday here at Wimbledon, men's quarterfinals

:00:53.:01:30.

day, huge crowds here, a buzz of excitement and anticipation as we

:01:31.:01:33.

enter the closing stages of the Championships.

:01:34.:01:37.

Eight men remaining, by the end of this evening there will be only for.

:01:38.:01:42.

Good afternoon, starting to get serious, the players know they are

:01:43.:01:45.

three wins away from lifting the most coveted trophy in tennis.

:01:46.:01:50.

Budgie Federer has done it seven times, Andy Murray who won at three

:01:51.:01:54.

years ago is the favourite, the highest ranked player left in the

:01:55.:01:57.

draw. Let's look at the eight players on court today. First up, a

:01:58.:02:03.

familiar figure, Roger Federer, a man looking to reaches 11 semifinal

:02:04.:02:11.

here today, in his ultimate bids for an eighth title. Marin Cilic his

:02:12.:02:15.

opponent, the big serving Croat knows what it takes to beat him and

:02:16.:02:24.

when a Grand Slam. Tomas Berdych loves the grass, he made the final

:02:25.:02:28.

in 2010, he has the game to trouble anyone. Today he faces little-known

:02:29.:02:35.

Frenchman Lucas Pouille, the 22-year-old had never won a match

:02:36.:02:39.

here until this year but in 2016 he has proved to be a danger man.

:02:40.:02:48.

Slamming Sam Querrey has been in the form of his life, the big American

:02:49.:02:52.

dumping out Novak Djokovic and has the armoury to go all the way. He

:02:53.:02:58.

plays Milos Raonic, the big serving Canadian who came back from two sets

:02:59.:03:01.

down in his fourth-round match proving he is tough as well as

:03:02.:03:09.

talented. And the fourth and final match sees popular French man

:03:10.:03:13.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, twice a semifinalist here and a man who has

:03:14.:03:19.

a big grass court game. He will take on Britain's Andy Murray. The 2013

:03:20.:03:27.

champion is looking to reach the last four the seventh time, in great

:03:28.:03:34.

form, yet to drop a set. Murray will have the Centre Court crowd on his

:03:35.:03:36.

side and he will be a tough opponent. So on Centre Court, we are

:03:37.:03:44.

heading there in a moment, Federer against Cilic and then Tsonga takes

:03:45.:03:50.

on Murray. And over on Court Number One, Sam Querrey against Milos

:03:51.:03:53.

Raonic, then Tomas Berdych against Lucas Pouille. We will raise to

:03:54.:03:58.

Centre Court, a first set tie-break, Roger Federer in trouble, Cilic is

:03:59.:04:04.

5-1 up in this tie-break. Let's join the commentary team.

:04:05.:04:41.

COMMENTATOR: just enough, on that service just out wide on the ad

:04:42.:04:47.

caught... APPLAUSE

:04:48.:05:24.

The backhand slice defence. Flirted with the top of the net but

:05:25.:05:28.

he survives. One of the four set points.

:05:29.:05:49.

Cilic just checking with the umpire whether that first serve was in.

:05:50.:06:08.

UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenging the ball on the right far side, the ball

:06:09.:06:14.

was called out. Second serve... What a wonderful tie-breaker that

:06:15.:06:38.

was from Cilic. He grabs the opening set 7-6.

:06:39.:06:50.

Strong, positive play and great serving. The quality of the returns

:06:51.:06:57.

is what makes this man actually as dangerous as anyone out there. Very

:06:58.:07:04.

much so, the first 12 games were nip and tuck, Federer had the

:07:05.:07:06.

opportunities but in the tie-break it was Cilic you found the extra

:07:07.:07:11.

gear, stepped up, made very few unforced errors, dominated

:07:12.:07:14.

proceedings to get the first set under his belt. This is where

:07:15.:07:20.

Federer's experience will benefit him, he played fine, his opponent

:07:21.:07:25.

played better, he will have to try and regain momentum in the early

:07:26.:07:28.

part of the second set. Federer had the chances in the middle of the

:07:29.:07:37.

set, 15-40 on Cilic's serve. The story of the set, clean returning,

:07:38.:07:41.

106 miles an hour forehand from Cilic! He is a guy who if he gets

:07:42.:07:49.

into a good headspace can beat anyone, we have seen that before.

:07:50.:07:55.

From my point of view, Federer will have to hope he sees a little bit of

:07:56.:08:01.

a dip, be steady, get a break of serve.

:08:02.:08:06.

Looking at those stats, some impressive serving, Cilic only

:08:07.:08:12.

losing a point behind his first serve, a great platform to be

:08:13.:08:19.

aggressive. And a very good quality match. 29 winners, 11 unforced

:08:20.:08:22.

errors between them. He is so tall, has long arms, landed

:08:23.:10:21.

a strong backhand on a precise serve, just missed it, Cilic.

:10:22.:10:40.

It was really hard to see this form coming from Marin Cilic if you look

:10:41.:10:57.

at what his season has been, it started rather badly, the third

:10:58.:11:03.

round of the Australian Open, losing to Roberto Bautista Agut, got

:11:04.:11:05.

injured before the clay-court season with a knee injury, missed all the

:11:06.:11:08.

big tournament is leading into Roland Garros and lost to a player

:11:09.:11:17.

ranked 166. Yes, you have never heard of him, join the club. Speak

:11:18.:11:25.

for yourself! I do! I never presume to speak for you, Tim! Especially

:11:26.:11:30.

when it is about... Who? Lost in the first round in Stuttgart

:11:31.:11:52.

to Radek Stepanek. But at Queen's Club, that really turned it.

:11:53.:12:00.

Cilic made the semis at Queen's before Andy Murray two came out,

:12:01.:12:40.

Federer was the one who saw it coming because of that practice

:12:41.:12:44.

session he had in the off week between Queen's and Wimbledon. He

:12:45.:12:52.

experienced Cilic's good form on the grass. That is one of the huge

:12:53.:12:58.

advantages for guys like Cilic to have someone like Goran Ivanisevic

:12:59.:13:00.

in the box because they understand that doesn't take much for that form

:13:01.:13:05.

to be rediscovered when you are as good as him.

:13:06.:13:25.

Even NICE a pitch's form wasn't necessarily good coming into the

:13:26.:13:35.

Championships, was at... Tim? Ranked 125 in the world and needing a

:13:36.:13:37.

wildcard... Probably not! -- Goran Some magic and he needed it! Not an

:13:38.:15:15.

easy shot to change direction from the back of the court. On a grass

:15:16.:15:19.

court with a one-handed backhand. That had to be injured perfect. --

:15:20.:15:24.

inch perfect. It has been called out. UMPIRE: Mr

:15:25.:15:36.

Federer challenging the ball on the right-hand side... Ball was called

:15:37.:15:37.

out... 30-30. Federer wins the point

:15:38.:15:55.

because the call was made but it was made after Cilic had hit the return.

:15:56.:16:02.

The call from the line judge had no impact on Cilic's shot.

:16:03.:16:21.

Not often you see Federer rushed. Cilic doing a very good job of

:16:22.:16:28.

getting on top of the second serve and really firing that return back.

:16:29.:16:58.

The opening holder for Federer at the start of this set was difficult

:16:59.:17:04.

but the next one ends with him dropping his serve. You see when

:17:05.:17:10.

they are getting into those exchanges, Federer's all is dropping

:17:11.:17:15.

short, in the middle of the court, Cilic able to get on the front foot

:17:16.:17:19.

and driving the ball hard into Federer's backhand. Just having

:17:20.:17:23.

those backhand exchanges, that is where Cilic is leading the

:17:24.:17:29.

favourite. Huge gap in speed, they are matching each other on the

:17:30.:17:34.

forehand side, speed wise, on the backhand wing there is a gulf

:17:35.:17:38.

between them, Federer is not really using the slice as I thought he

:17:39.:17:42.

might to try and change that, he is trying to go toe to toe with Cilic

:17:43.:17:47.

and that has not been a winning strategy for him in these rallies.

:17:48.:17:52.

Small margins. Federer was not able to deliver on his break points in

:17:53.:17:56.

the first set, Cilic steals one early.

:17:57.:18:02.

I think the next 15 minutes will be interesting. You feel, coming into

:18:03.:18:09.

this match, Cilic didn't have so much to lose, Federer was the

:18:10.:18:14.

favourite but now... Cilic up a set and a break, he certainly has

:18:15.:18:15.

something to lose. That serve of his cancan the nerves,

:18:16.:18:30.

simplify things. And he was hitting the ball very well coming into this

:18:31.:18:33.

contest, it was never going to be easy and so it is proving to be.

:18:34.:19:32.

Whoops... He had been serving so well for the first 55 minutes of the

:19:33.:19:44.

match, some tension in his arm. Interesting, he has been getting so

:19:45.:19:49.

much mileage out of his first serve, heading now around 50%, 10% less

:19:50.:19:56.

than he has been doing throughout the tournament, relatively

:19:57.:19:57.

unchallenged. It wasn't easy to smash into the

:19:58.:20:16.

sunshine for Cilic. That first serve was only 125, you want to get that

:20:17.:20:22.

in, not face a second, but it could be the sunshine.

:20:23.:20:36.

More challenge for a right-handed player to look up. Nice challenge.

:20:37.:20:47.

His best was 130, just wants to show you what he has got in the tank!

:20:48.:20:55.

Since I watched and served out against Federer in the semifinal,

:20:56.:21:01.

you wonder whether the nerves ever get to this man, three aces and an

:21:02.:21:07.

unreturnable, thank you very much, straight through to the final.

:21:08.:21:16.

UMPIRE: Mr Cilic is challenging the call on the right nearside, the ball

:21:17.:21:27.

was called out. Amazing what a scoreboard can do. When he gets the

:21:28.:21:37.

break, a different player. He is questioning himself.

:21:38.:21:57.

Querrey gender pressure. -- carriage under pressure. Good second serve

:21:58.:22:12.

from Cilic but Federer will be disappointed, had the return on his

:22:13.:22:15.

ragged, rolled it pretty tamely into the net.

:22:16.:22:20.

When you know you are going to get so many opportunities, you really

:22:21.:22:26.

have to take their chances. Pressure at both ends of the court

:22:27.:23:01.

in that situation. From Roger's perspective, he is desperate to get

:23:02.:23:05.

the break back. And it impacted him as well. He was very tight on those

:23:06.:23:13.

to add court returns. He likes to show everyone he is human.

:23:14.:23:31.

That is a get out of jail free card for Cilic, in this game, all the

:23:32.:23:39.

pressure lifted high holding serve, good chance for him to steal another

:23:40.:23:47.

break. He will feel a lot freer in this game, I am sure he didn't in

:23:48.:23:48.

that last one. UMPIRE: Mr Cilic challenging the

:23:49.:24:20.

call on the left service line, the ball was called in...

:24:21.:24:43.

If you can't get the ball back in play... Some good serving from

:24:44.:24:46.

Federer. How good was that volley from

:24:47.:24:57.

Federer? Especially when you do it so

:24:58.:25:12.

sparingly, such a rhythmic move, their serve and volley. Just the

:25:13.:25:18.

fourth time he has done it. Fantastic movement with the big

:25:19.:25:25.

step. We talk a lot in tennis about the footwork, is that something that

:25:26.:25:31.

you get taught how to move to the volley or is it something you do so

:25:32.:25:37.

many times it becomes natural? It's a combination, obviously there is

:25:38.:25:40.

the movement and footwork, getting in the right position Bob was also

:25:41.:25:45.

understanding the angles and it's like a football goalkeeper, you

:25:46.:25:48.

cannot get beaten at the near post, you don't want to give eaten by the

:25:49.:25:53.

passed down the line so it's understanding where you flow at the

:25:54.:25:58.

net and it something Federer does a lot better. Two or three years ago

:25:59.:26:02.

he didn't understand, it was almost as if he was covering the middle,

:26:03.:26:06.

the passing shot would not often go down the middle but now he moves

:26:07.:26:10.

better, understands the angles, I think it is a tactic he has to use

:26:11.:26:15.

more today. From the back of the court, Cilic has been aggressive,

:26:16.:26:19.

Federer on the back but, Federer has to look to get to the net more

:26:20.:26:24.

often, use the serve and volley to make Cilic think, it may give him a

:26:25.:26:26.

chance to get back into the match. Doesn't matter where you are, when

:26:27.:26:50.

the serve is that accurate... 118, out wide. That is quick.

:26:51.:26:56.

We have seen Federer be disruptive with his return of serve position,

:26:57.:27:04.

in the last year, he used a sneak attack, have volume some of them to

:27:05.:27:09.

rattle his opponent. Not doing anything right now, trying to rattle

:27:10.:27:15.

Cilic on his serve and I think he would be wise to stand more in the

:27:16.:27:20.

doubles Ali, to his right, forcing Cilic to serve to the T. Do

:27:21.:27:29.

something to get him out. Give him a different look, yes, if he was

:27:30.:27:33.

standing out there, Cilic would look on the court and say Federer is

:27:34.:27:39.

standing somewhere different. Clockwork.

:27:40.:27:58.

Serving like this, it is almost a must win game for Federer. The Cilic

:27:59.:28:05.

first serve percentage has lifted in that set, the last game did not hurt

:28:06.:28:08.

him. He is so wide. Cilic, serve and

:28:09.:28:44.

volley, I would probably want to see Federer all of the body and handcuff

:28:45.:28:49.

him. If you are going to try and use that tactic, you have to jam him.

:28:50.:29:16.

He has got to hold serve but the biggest issue for Federer... Federer

:29:17.:29:25.

will be keeping his fingers crossed that the level comes down.

:29:26.:29:38.

The question is how many war games is he going to last? Cilic gave him

:29:39.:29:50.

some chances, Federer had a point, he could not convert, those are the

:29:51.:29:54.

ones you have to grab, you may not see another one the rest of the day.

:29:55.:30:00.

You see how easy it is? What a shot into the absolute apex

:30:01.:30:58.

of the court from Raonic. Who is this guy!?

:30:59.:31:56.

I feel, watching Cilic if he stands out, makes it obvious, do something

:31:57.:32:18.

under the radar to throw him out. Change of position changes the

:32:19.:32:27.

match. Down a set, down a break, ten feet further back, changed the

:32:28.:32:37.

outlook for Andre. I would have lost without that move. For sure. Roger,

:32:38.:32:46.

for all his greatness, can be stubborn. Resist change. But back

:32:47.:32:59.

now. I don't recall him going back for the second serve return. One in

:33:00.:33:14.

the first set. Such slim pickings. Good to see him make that

:33:15.:33:24.

adjustment. Still hitting that remarkable number. Ace every 2.5

:33:25.:33:30.

first serves, Cilic. Helps to be tall, in tennis. Since

:33:31.:34:20.

1970, seven champions 5'10 or under. Last to win a slam 5'10

:34:21.:34:32.

under, Gaston Gaudio at the French. Given the height on average unlikely

:34:33.:34:50.

we'll see one anytime soon. Another good one two punch from

:34:51.:35:16.

Federer but knockout blow potentially round the corner as

:35:17.:35:26.

Cilic comes out to serve for a 2-0 lead against the seven time

:35:27.:35:33.

champion. Flawless from the Croatian. Warm day. Hot, hard work

:35:34.:35:48.

for the seven time champion. Ball toss is something else. Lack of

:35:49.:35:50.

rotation. Cilic, had to do it the hard way,

:35:51.:36:19.

born, not even a tennis court built in the city he grew up in. 1991, got

:36:20.:36:27.

their first. Started playing, war between 92 and 95, couldn't play. He

:36:28.:36:35.

has seen a fair bit of life, this man. Said bad times have made good

:36:36.:36:47.

times even better. And good times so far for him in this quarter final.

:36:48.:36:59.

Federer on that return. Lands the first blow. Good forehand return.

:37:00.:37:19.

Did the hard work. Credit to Cilic who stayed as big as possible at the

:37:20.:37:30.

net. Everything Federer in the work has

:37:31.:37:56.

achieved, that was an unbelievable miss.

:37:57.:38:21.

Those are the points Federer must have, has to be winning, instead

:38:22.:38:34.

facing two set points to go down 2-0.

:38:35.:39:16.

Embark on a 10th time. To make the semis. Cilic wraps up a 2-0 lead. So

:39:17.:39:35.

rare to see Federer miss those. But Cilic 2-0 up. Roger needs to win the

:39:36.:39:44.

next three. On Court One, Raonic just taken the second set. 2-0. Up

:39:45.:39:51.

against the man who put out Djokovic. That is on BBC Two.

:39:52.:40:02.

Federer, also in court, summing up next, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against

:40:03.:40:13.

Andy Murray. Centre Court is going to reverberate with this chant

:40:14.:40:23.

later... Come on Andy! Come on Andy! Come on Andy! Come on Andy! Come on

:40:24.:40:31.

Andy! Come on Andy! A guy like that... You have to follow him. Andy

:40:32.:40:47.

may not have long to wait. Not if Cilic continues that form. Henman

:40:48.:40:58.

Hill. Wonderful scene. Enjoying it all unfold. They are watching Centre

:40:59.:41:11.

Court, seven time champion in trouble. Federer serving, down 2-0.

:41:12.:41:23.

The last time he went to five sets, he did recover. Against Monfils, US

:41:24.:41:26.

Open, 2014. Monfils had him dead to rights,

:41:27.:41:45.

third set. Fell away. Monfils wildly entertaining. Nowhere near as

:41:46.:41:52.

mentally stable as Cilic. 118, if he does't hit the spot

:41:53.:42:29.

perfectly, it will sit. Took the pace off it. 96. Federer up and

:42:30.:42:46.

running. Hard to relate to Roger. So on champion. Lets losses roll of his

:42:47.:42:54.

back better than any other champion. Operates differently. It is

:42:55.:42:59.

difficult to know if he is getting to the stage of his career, nerves

:43:00.:43:07.

are worse, because he knows time is maybe more limited. Chances, fewer.

:43:08.:43:16.

We do not know what is going on, in his head. But he could be thinking,

:43:17.:43:25.

this is such a chance, Novak out. Who knows. Only he knows. That would

:43:26.:43:28.

certainly be logical. I hope he gets a tonne. But I don't

:43:29.:43:40.

know. Not too many more chances. Opens up the angles. Croatians don't

:43:41.:44:14.

do small! 6'6 here. Ivanisovic, 6'4. Karlovic.

:44:15.:44:27.

The certainly makes it easier to win a few points, net height of 3'5.

:44:28.:44:39.

Hasn't changed since 1882. Why's that? Do you think we may need

:44:40.:44:53.

to look at that? No... Would you talk about moving service line

:44:54.:45:00.

closer? I do not think you need to do too much fiddling with the game.

:45:01.:45:13.

He's made that as well! What a performance this is proving to be

:45:14.:45:25.

from Cilic. Great serving from Roger. You know

:45:26.:46:38.

he's not going to leave Wimbledon without a fight.

:46:39.:46:53.

The only reason I asked about the net... NBA thinking about moving the

:46:54.:47:09.

basket up. Taller players. Basketball originally not designed

:47:10.:47:13.

to have the slam dunk. And I was just wondering, 1882, the ref used

:47:14.:47:24.

to taper the net, service line. Moving it depending on points. And

:47:25.:47:31.

we have the situation, I think if you raise the net too much,

:47:32.:47:39.

potentially you have got to hit it higher, easier for taller players,

:47:40.:47:45.

the zero going to potentially lose much anyway. It is probably going to

:47:46.:47:50.

become a talking point, at some stage.

:47:51.:48:06.

Such a complete player these days. No question Goran, full time super

:48:07.:48:19.

coach, has done a wonderful job with Cilic.

:48:20.:48:45.

Cilic had been coached by one of the great Aussie's, Bob to Goran. Bit of

:48:46.:48:56.

a hand off. Goran got Bob involved in Zagreb. If when he left to

:48:57.:49:01.

practice more. He has plenty of perspective, Cilic

:49:02.:49:20.

as it has not been plain sailing in his life, career. Failed the test.

:49:21.:49:33.

Accidental. Glucose tablet. Had a banned substance. Out of

:49:34.:49:43.

competition, banned, appealed, served under half a year.

:49:44.:49:54.

That took him off the tour for a bit. Made up for lost time since

:49:55.:50:09.

then. Prior to winning the US Open. Here, he withdrew in the second

:50:10.:50:14.

round, fake injury after he had been notified he had failed the test. But

:50:15.:50:19.

a good man. Innocent mistake. That mistake, innocent or not? That

:50:20.:50:41.

could change the set, the match. Lax attempt.

:50:42.:51:33.

Backhand hasn't been working as well as it's needed to. You don't almost

:51:34.:51:45.

sense the crowd wanting to get their teeth in this set. Give Federer a

:51:46.:51:54.

lift, but a Cilic ace then unforced error from the Federer backhand.

:51:55.:52:21.

Benefit by hitting the lines. At times, checks. Threw Federer's

:52:22.:52:33.

timing off on the side looking more and more vulnerable.

:52:34.:52:49.

Federer releasing stress there, with the "come on"! A little on tilt

:52:50.:53:02.

right now. Product of that half chance gone by, last return game.

:53:03.:53:12.

Weight of the scoreboard on his shoulders right now.

:53:13.:53:23.

This surface, more than any other, puts you under pressure. Drop serve

:53:24.:53:36.

against Cilic and chance gone. Clay, hard, more chance to get back. Not

:53:37.:53:38.

here. Not even Roger. In raising, and then it is a

:53:39.:54:02.

rousing, kicked so many to Cilic and we are seeing some changes, to the

:54:03.:54:04.

forehand. Did well to salvage the situation.

:54:05.:54:51.

Terrific return. 3-2. Federer, staying in front, only just. We will

:54:52.:54:57.

be back in a moment. And it is going Raonic's way. Live on BBC Two. That

:54:58.:55:09.

is what is happening, on Court One, back to Centre. This is how we like

:55:10.:55:33.

to see Wimbledon, blue skies, sunshine, Paris this year was tough

:55:34.:55:35.

for fans and players, 12, 13 degrees. Not an ounce of sunshine,

:55:36.:55:44.

ten days! And just two minutes, after Djokovic secured the trophy,

:55:45.:55:54.

sun out for the ceremony! It was tough, for everybody, this is

:55:55.:56:05.

refreshing, bathed in sunshine. Will this man have the warm glow of

:56:06.:56:15.

success around him today? Looks that way.

:56:16.:56:26.

We talked, about how important it was for Federer to try to extend

:56:27.:56:41.

these rallies, get Cilic moving, extra shots. Unable to do that.

:56:42.:56:48.

Grand total of four points, more than nine shot rallies. Federer just

:56:49.:57:00.

has not been able to use his armoury. He has not been allowed to.

:57:01.:57:10.

Cilic has been looking to dictate, dominate, Federer has been reactive

:57:11.:57:14.

rather than proactive. That has been such a difference, the

:57:15.:57:42.

effectiveness of Cilic's two handed backhand. Ten mile an hour speed

:57:43.:57:47.

difference, Cilic hitting the faster shot. Very accurate.

:57:48.:58:01.

The was a sensational pick up. I was watching Cilic, I thought he had no

:58:02.:58:12.

chance. Almost all listening for the umpire! Double bounce? Certainly,

:58:13.:58:28.

Federer doing well to react. But at 4-0 probably won't make a

:58:29.:58:29.

difference. -- 40-0. Stunning. What a shot. Excellent,

:58:30.:58:54.

from Cilic. This is not just about Federer not being able to play how

:58:55.:59:06.

he does, this is Cilic nullifying. This is shades of Flushing Meadows

:59:07.:59:11.

2014. This is the stage, when he put his foot on the accelerator, not

:59:12.:59:27.

losing a set from there on. That is again, just a gorgeous forehand.

:59:28.:59:30.

Return has been one of the most damaging. You can see the speeds.

:59:31.:59:38.

Just looked up the difference, Cilic taking a wee Federer's time.

:59:39.:59:50.

It is 14 mile difference. Red alert time for Federer and his fans. 3-3.

:59:51.:00:00.

0-30. What a short from Cilic. Three

:00:01.:00:14.

mini-break points coming. Brilliant from Federer! He just kept

:00:15.:01:12.

getting back inside Cilic. Never allowed Cilic to settle for

:01:13.:01:29.

any of those shots. Can he recover this from 0- 40?

:01:30.:01:45.

APPLAUSE CHEERING

:01:46.:01:54.

A kick-serve, to the strongest return Cilic had, he cannot find the

:01:55.:01:56.

strength. Well... Well... Couldn't find the

:01:57.:02:19.

strings, I don't think he could quite move his feet, definitely a

:02:20.:02:23.

little bit of nervous tension in those legs.

:02:24.:02:28.

CHEERING Rogers still standing as he receives

:02:29.:02:36.

a partial standing ovation from his camp and also the crowd.

:02:37.:02:41.

Is that the first tentative step in terms of a comeback? It is a little

:02:42.:02:52.

crack in the facade of marrying Cilic. -- Marin Cilic. It makes for

:02:53.:03:06.

a long 60 Seconds. For the Croat. If he needs any encouragement, take a

:03:07.:03:10.

look at the scoreboard, you were still up White two sets, still on

:03:11.:03:14.

serve. Federer... Boy, that should give him a fair bit of adrenaline.

:03:15.:03:19.

He is certainly looking for that spark, something for him and the

:03:20.:03:24.

crowd to get their teeth stuck into. Yes...

:03:25.:03:30.

He hasn't broken serve, from 0- 40, it almost felt like a break in a way

:03:31.:03:38.

as far as positive energy and emotion for Federer... Putting on

:03:39.:03:46.

this new shirt with a break in serve...

:03:47.:03:56.

Back from the brink. How will Cilic react?

:03:57.:04:36.

Was it me or did Cilic take a good amount of time getting ready for

:04:37.:04:47.

that serve? Whatever he did, it was still a good serve, 130 miles an

:04:48.:04:52.

hour, the momentum in this set has shifted.

:04:53.:05:09.

One of his best backhand returns of the day. Pace and depth finally and

:05:10.:05:21.

Cilic unable to cope. UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenge the

:05:22.:05:40.

call on the left service line, the ball was called in...

:05:41.:05:51.

Decent response, Federer can't believe how far are in it was. It

:05:52.:05:57.

gave Federer some extra seconds, it did not change anything.

:05:58.:06:05.

He is down by two sets and not raking his opponent served all day,

:06:06.:06:10.

he is prepared to try anything. Goodness, gracious. How good is that

:06:11.:06:25.

serve? Tough to argue. I could argue he is the worst challenger of line

:06:26.:06:32.

calls of all time! In the era of Hawk-Eye.

:06:33.:06:50.

APPLAUSE CHEERING

:06:51.:06:59.

Not the cleanest backhand he has ever hit certainly effective, kept

:07:00.:07:04.

the ball deep. Keeps himself in this Cilic service

:07:05.:07:05.

game. CHEERING

:07:06.:07:18.

APPLAUSE This is what Federer wasn't able to

:07:19.:07:47.

do earlier, convert the second serve on break point. And he went forehand

:07:48.:07:53.

again. CHEERING

:07:54.:08:11.

You see the reaction from the crowd, certainly a lot of people out here

:08:12.:08:18.

who would like to see Roger Federer playing for a lot longer.

:08:19.:08:19.

CHEERING Still had to be vigilant for the

:08:20.:09:46.

attempted pass from Federer. CHEERING

:09:47.:10:00.

Back right from the edge, Federer. Now with set point...

:10:01.:10:23.

He seals the third... Arguably his best backhand of the match down the

:10:24.:10:27.

line. And optimism returning for this

:10:28.:10:38.

Centre Court crowd. Federer not offering an escape route

:10:39.:10:57.

back into the set for Cilic who looked destined to win in straight

:10:58.:11:04.

sets but Federer grabs the third. And has momentum and the crowd

:11:05.:11:08.

firmly on his side. He has the knowledge that Cilic has blinked

:11:09.:11:14.

when he was on a winning position, a chance to steal this match in

:11:15.:11:17.

straight sets, Cilic blinked. For Federer, that is something to tuck

:11:18.:11:23.

away in the back of his mind if he gets into a tight situation again in

:11:24.:11:28.

the fourth or potentially save set if that is where we are travelling

:11:29.:11:29.

to. Tim, you are the stats guy, what

:11:30.:11:41.

does this mean? Look at the first serve percentage of Cilic, the first

:11:42.:11:46.

two sets, getting better, but dropping down to 52%, Federer

:11:47.:11:50.

getting some looks at second serve, the bubbly the most important start

:11:51.:12:01.

was break points one, Cilic 3-3, federal one-for-one. We could see

:12:02.:12:06.

what was going on in the mind of marrying Cilic.

:12:07.:12:17.

Some were from the depths of despair he must have been feeling, Federer,

:12:18.:12:23.

he has managed to drag and resuscitating this challenge at this

:12:24.:12:31.

year's Wimbledon. It would have been an uncomfortable last 10-15 minutes

:12:32.:12:36.

for Cilic. Serving first in the fourth, needs to get off to a

:12:37.:12:38.

positive start. Bit they regroup for Andy Murray and

:12:39.:12:50.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, they would have been thinking lacing up the shoes 20

:12:51.:12:52.

minutes ago. Couldn't leave anything behind on

:12:53.:14:02.

that one. Roger Federer... The player who has

:14:03.:14:30.

the game that is easiest on the eyes, flowing, effortless style.

:14:31.:14:36.

Virtually poetic. Cilic's game is rather manufactured. It's effective,

:14:37.:14:46.

we know that. You can see the work he has put into it. What was the

:14:47.:14:53.

best bit of advice either of you two had in this situation that Cilic

:14:54.:14:57.

finds himself in in terms of reacting well to a situation that

:14:58.:15:01.

suddenly felt you were on the cusp of a famous win and it went away? It

:15:02.:15:07.

is important that Cilic stays in the present tense, stays in a good

:15:08.:15:12.

position, up 2-1 sets, but focuses on the process, not the outcome. He

:15:13.:15:19.

has the game plan that is dictating play, an uncomfortable last 15

:15:20.:15:23.

minutes but if he gets back into the moment of first serve, first shot in

:15:24.:15:27.

the rally... That is what has worked for him.

:15:28.:15:36.

Was there a trigger for you, Jim? We talk about staying in the present

:15:37.:15:42.

but it is far harder to actually achieved. Keeping your feet moving

:15:43.:15:47.

is something that Cilic could do, it is a trigger that are used, stay

:15:48.:15:52.

light on your toes, as Tim mentioned, when Cilic got tight, his

:15:53.:15:58.

feet seemed to grow roots into the ground, they stopped moving. Big

:15:59.:16:00.

words! If he can try and stay light at his

:16:01.:16:16.

feet, everything else could flow from there.

:16:17.:16:24.

And stay loose. That is the thing. When players get tight, their feet

:16:25.:16:31.

stop moving and the racket head speed slows down, you try and muscle

:16:32.:16:36.

the ball. Rather than just flowing. And accelerating naturally.

:16:37.:16:48.

1-1. Both players looking to change rackets. The new balls coming into

:16:49.:17:04.

play. Was that something you did, Jim? You

:17:05.:17:16.

just played with the same tension? It wasn't necessarily the same

:17:17.:17:19.

tension but I didn't necessarily change with the new balls. I had an

:17:20.:17:25.

amount of time that my rackets would last, this day is with the strain

:17:26.:17:30.

they lose a little bit more attention than our strings used to.

:17:31.:17:34.

That is why you see the players changing with balls, the strings

:17:35.:17:38.

stretched just a little bit more, apparently.

:17:39.:19:10.

He has kind of weathered the storm of momentum, we talk about this

:19:11.:19:16.

going into a final set, someone wins the second or fourth and they have

:19:17.:19:20.

the momentum but it seems to get subdued quickly and Cilic has

:19:21.:19:23.

perhaps managed to navigate the worst of it. He might have, it is

:19:24.:19:30.

tough to keep momentum on this surface because it's so hard to

:19:31.:19:34.

break serve, it's not that you get into a lot of rallies but let's see

:19:35.:19:44.

what Federer did different. He was pinned back much more in the first

:19:45.:19:49.

two sets... You can see how offensive he became. 45% of the

:19:50.:19:53.

shots taking place inside the baseline. That is a pretty sizeable

:19:54.:20:01.

change for Roger Federer. We have looked at Cilic from Hawk-Eye, the

:20:02.:20:06.

same stat, not much change. It was really more about Federer taking

:20:07.:20:14.

advantage of chances and quite frankly, that's 0- 40 mess.

:20:15.:20:19.

Some pointers on the bigger than others. They certainly are. And some

:20:20.:20:27.

hats are clearly bigger than others as well!

:20:28.:21:05.

There is that extra pace that he has on the ball that hurry is Federer

:21:06.:21:09.

into an error. For a big guy, Cilic, he does a

:21:10.:21:53.

great job of overrunning the ball when he is on the stretch. He is not

:21:54.:21:59.

going to ever be the most nimble but Federer had him out wide, there

:22:00.:22:03.

wasn't a lot of space to hit that ball into, he tried to create

:22:04.:22:10.

something out of nothing, Roger... A chance for Cilic lapses let's see

:22:11.:22:18.

whether he can stay light on his feet. Really connected with some

:22:19.:22:21.

returns. Needs one more. Bad return our great serving to the

:22:22.:22:48.

body? 100 miles an hour serve into the body of Cilic has two land that,

:22:49.:22:57.

cannot miss that return. It is a second serve, not a first serve, he

:22:58.:22:59.

has to make this one. That is a chant from Cilic. Full

:23:00.:23:15.

credit to Federer, you don't get that many free points on a second

:23:16.:23:19.

serve, Federer just got to monumentally important points.

:23:20.:23:21.

Donations... You find in Formula 1, if you could

:23:22.:23:49.

see all the miles on the players, you could see for Cilic's stress

:23:50.:23:58.

levels are now. And if we had talked back, we could listen to Goran

:23:59.:24:01.

Ivanisevic talking to Cilic... There might be some beeps.

:24:02.:24:06.

UMPIRE: Mr Cilic challenging the call on the

:24:07.:24:13.

left fireside... He feels Cilic had a good view of that...

:24:14.:24:20.

Not looking quite so good for the creation. More chances come and go.

:24:21.:24:30.

On the one hand Cilic could be reflecting, saying I am creating

:24:31.:24:33.

opportunities on serve, getting a good look, the other side of the

:24:34.:24:37.

coin, when he has opportunities, he is looking pretty tight.

:24:38.:25:06.

Tight was not a word you could describe Cilic when he beat Federer

:25:07.:25:13.

at the US Open, converting four adder added chances. It was one of

:25:14.:25:18.

six today here against Federer. And I am not sure it the next ones

:25:19.:25:31.

get any easier, leaving those behind.

:25:32.:25:46.

Genius! CHEERING

:25:47.:25:57.

Give the man at Kansas, this is what he will paint for you.

:25:58.:26:05.

Thoughts of what has just gone by, lingering around, clearly for Cilic.

:26:06.:26:39.

Seemed a little late... The sound that we could hear, I couldn't even

:26:40.:26:48.

hear the machine, obviously it went off for the umpire... Certainly it

:26:49.:26:53.

has been a match of fine margins. CHEERING

:26:54.:27:17.

Could not have worked that point any better, pretty deductible for a

:27:18.:27:22.

Cilic was going to go after the return and Federer stayed home.

:27:23.:27:31.

Getting out of trouble, breaking straightaway. Do the same here in

:27:32.:27:37.

the fourth. A little bird has just flown onto

:27:38.:27:54.

the court... I wonder what speed that was... 128

:27:55.:28:16.

mile an hour ace to try and get himself out of jail.

:28:17.:28:32.

Well... Federer moving over to the middle of the court to try and get

:28:33.:28:44.

Cilic to serve... Cilic took the bait, served behind him.

:28:45.:28:49.

Cilic hasn't delivered on the break point on the Federer serve but

:28:50.:28:57.

certainly when he has faced a crisis on his own serve, he has hit the

:28:58.:28:59.

spot. LAUGHTER he cannot bear to look

:29:00.:29:18.

already, that is why everyone loves him so much. One of the great

:29:19.:29:25.

characters of the game. He sat back in his chair when that second break

:29:26.:29:29.

point went in the Federer service game, he knew how big it was. Looked

:29:30.:29:37.

like Cilic tuque page ad of Sampras's book, threw it up and hit

:29:38.:29:38.

it. He is sitting down there. A big gulp

:29:39.:29:55.

of water and a sigh of relief for Cilic. He could have got symmetry as

:29:56.:30:03.

well, not quite the same scoreline, there is the power behind the throne

:30:04.:30:08.

for Roger, his mother, she is the sporting gene, it was due to the

:30:09.:30:12.

fact that she used to play grass hockey without shin pads, Persians

:30:13.:30:17.

got broken so many times that eventually she said, no more and to

:30:18.:30:21.

to the tennis courts and have not been the case, we may never have

:30:22.:30:26.

witnessed what we have since 2003 here at the All-England Club!

:30:27.:30:36.

Nice blend, parents, father Robert, what an adventurer. No GPS out

:30:37.:30:50.

there! 40 plus years ago. He has had that pioneer spirit

:30:51.:31:08.

throughout his career, Roger. Been the best ambassador, for men's

:31:09.:31:37.

tennis, I can remember, combined his achievements, with such dignity, and

:31:38.:31:47.

class. In a sport that demands a microcosmic view. Fought for the

:31:48.:31:56.

lower class, the first three rounds, prize money. We may never see a

:31:57.:32:06.

player like him. Incredible role murder.

:32:07.:32:25.

Second serve ace. Getting better for Federer. But no room for error with

:32:26.:32:40.

the situation he finds himself in now.

:32:41.:33:16.

Confident shot, that last forehand from Cilic and if he was nervous...

:33:17.:33:30.

Don't have the speed, it falls on the net. Change of tactics from

:33:31.:33:41.

Federer as not so much chip and charge, bluff and charge. Just

:33:42.:33:50.

challenging Cilic and the Croatian not up to it.

:33:51.:35:24.

132, the final serve to the body. Any sense this sight of nerves for

:35:25.:35:47.

Cilic compared to New York? Closed it out. All looking unconscious

:35:48.:35:58.

there. It could be the location issue, something to do with that? He

:35:59.:36:07.

is the only one, who knows why he was looking tight, he seemed to be

:36:08.:36:14.

absolutely unconscious, he had not sustained, the way he did. It was an

:36:15.:36:19.

incredible performance. He has been much more uneven today. Had his

:36:20.:36:30.

chances. Convereted some, to take the champ out. Had the champ on the

:36:31.:36:35.

ropes. Couldn't have asked more from

:36:36.:37:59.

himself. Certainly, moving along, rapid pace.

:38:00.:38:19.

It could be more mentally draining than physically.

:38:20.:38:43.

That is phenomenal. He had to make some adjustments, so easy to

:38:44.:39:00.

underhit this. To play a half-volley with slice, not easy.

:39:01.:39:15.

Cilic certainly had a wobble, end of the third, but restored his play.

:39:16.:40:15.

That flick of the back, of the forehand, can get him into trouble

:40:16.:40:27.

but in that position Federer couldn't catch up. What a return.

:40:28.:40:42.

Federer looking for that forehand. Launched into that one. 40-30... 85

:40:43.:40:52.

mph off the first serve. Majority, 50. What a difference for Roger.

:40:53.:41:18.

Gave himself a half chance. Couldn't take it. 5-4. Federer is going to be

:41:19.:41:32.

dolling out, serve to stay in this, one Centre Court. And on Court

:41:33.:41:43.

Number One, Raonic 3-2 up, two sets to one. That is the situation, Court

:41:44.:41:53.

Number One, BBC Two. And outside, this is the end of resale queues.

:41:54.:42:04.

How many people hoping they'll get in? On and on! Quarterfinals, who is

:42:05.:42:16.

going to leave? Early dinner reservation!? Coming up next, Murray

:42:17.:42:26.

against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and also, Berdych against on and on...

:42:27.:42:37.

Long wait. I wish them well! Pouille, but for the people, at

:42:38.:42:43.

Centre Court, there it is, the front! Everybody enjoying their time

:42:44.:42:48.

on Centre. Second serve. And Cilic has polished

:42:49.:43:08.

Federer. -- punished. Federer serving to stay in the

:43:09.:43:11.

Championships. Won the US Open, then lost his next

:43:12.:43:33.

11 to top ten opponents. Big moment for both. Cilic can reclaim some of

:43:34.:43:50.

his glory. Cilic made the semis of the US last year without beating

:43:51.:44:02.

anyone in the top ten. This would be something entirely different.

:44:03.:44:12.

Ambitious shot to play at this stage...

:44:13.:44:30.

Federer tried finesse, Cilic stayed with power. He has created and lost

:44:31.:44:50.

a few chances... Got himself to match point.

:44:51.:45:14.

The last three break points, second serve, hasn't found the court.

:45:15.:45:59.

Not just still alive. Now just because the education, smart

:46:00.:46:12.

serving, ball back into court, at the same time, he's narrowed the

:46:13.:46:23.

angle, even if Cilic makes it more pressure on the return. Not

:46:24.:46:38.

unchartered territory for Cilic to win against a top three in the Grand

:46:39.:46:42.

Slam, done it against Murray and Nadal, Beijing, but does not, round

:46:43.:46:44.

or hidden. -- come around often. Maybe catches a fraction of string?

:46:45.:47:08.

The most expensive part of the racket! At this stage, he will take

:47:09.:47:13.

anything that he can get. The opening shot of the game was

:47:14.:48:20.

lucky... No luck there. Pure class. Struck with conviction of a champion

:48:21.:48:34.

who still believes he can win. Speaking of class... The shot at

:48:35.:49:00.

15-30 for Cilic. Stifles the disappointment of match point gone.

:49:01.:49:51.

5-5, 30-30, fourth set! Got to be careful!

:49:52.:50:16.

Passed that test with flying colours, Cilic. Federer had so much

:50:17.:50:26.

spin on that slice. Trying to bury it. Federer was angry at the end of

:50:27.:50:40.

that. Don't see a lot of negative energy from Roger. But shouted in

:50:41.:50:54.

the court. What an escape. Serve variation, big part in Cilic not

:50:55.:51:03.

getting into rhythm. But nerves and tension for Cilic still

:51:04.:51:10.

unmistakable. That is what makes this great. He has got to find a way

:51:11.:51:21.

through. And 83%, against his normal, telling for both. Tip our

:51:22.:51:33.

cap to Federer to go for more on the second serve, he has. If Federer

:51:34.:51:49.

wants to see a fifth set, has to hold and get through a tie breaker.

:51:50.:52:06.

Almost seems to me, Cilic and his return, on the first serve he has

:52:07.:52:13.

less time to react. Different story. Brave return. Skipped off the net.

:52:14.:52:39.

Impossible for Federer but credit to Cilic. Answered with perfection.

:52:40.:53:00.

This time, didn't need a second serve to get out of trouble! Hasn't

:53:01.:53:44.

landed a serve out wide on break point. 18th ace. Followed by his

:53:45.:53:50.

19th! Feature of his career. How reliable

:53:51.:54:24.

that first serve is under pressure. Cilic wrestled control of the first

:54:25.:55:06.

set tie break at this point. Cilic would get the next two.

:55:07.:55:23.

Goodness. If he gets out of this... Not beause he played it safe! 111

:55:24.:55:43.

mph second serve! Brave if you make it, stupid if you miss. What a

:55:44.:56:00.

return. That thing was so low. Over the tape. First mini-break goes to

:56:01.:56:05.

Cilic. UMPIRE: Cilic challenging the call.

:56:06.:56:58.

Goran had an inkling! Not ending well for his player.

:56:59.:57:31.

Almost got the sense Roger didn't pick up the ball. Softly hit.

:57:32.:57:45.

Dipping as it got to Federer who is so good on the rise.

:57:46.:58:09.

A lot of collective breath holding for fans in here! Hold it till the

:58:10.:58:20.

end of this? Murray and Tsonga paying attention! Wondering if

:58:21.:58:24.

they're on soon. Wonderful to see just how accurate

:58:25.:58:45.

serving has been since 6-5. Peppered the lines.

:58:46.:59:19.

It did not miss by much. But it missed by enough. CHEERING

:59:20.:59:36.

. I beg your pardon. Unbelievable! He challenged so casually, it did

:59:37.:59:41.

not look as though he believed it was in.

:59:42.:59:44.

UMPIRE: 5-3, Federer. That is some reaction from Cilic. It

:59:45.:00:32.

was as though somebody had punched him when that challenge was called.

:00:33.:00:37.

Watch him on that first serve, on that forehand. Federer had two

:00:38.:00:44.

serves and a chance to send this to a fifth.

:00:45.:01:05.

Break point, second serve, forehand body. He has targeted the weak area

:01:06.:01:14.

and he has got his wall, two set points the Federer. Dashes reward.

:01:15.:01:37.

UMPIRE: 6-5, Akrotiri. -- macro three. The encouragement continues

:01:38.:01:51.

right after the blemish. Just can't believe that forehand. Still set

:01:52.:01:55.

point. His first serve was not going to go

:01:56.:02:13.

into hibernation for very long. For Federer, that their hand at 6-4 was

:02:14.:02:18.

nervous and he did not get himself in position. He wanted it too much

:02:19.:02:24.

and he swung to sue at it. The same pedigree as the most backhand at 5-4

:02:25.:02:34.

at 0- four -- 0-40, macro -- one serving. Shots he would normally

:02:35.:02:36.

have made. -- Marin Cilic serving. So the pendulum that has been

:02:37.:02:55.

swinging one way and then the other swings firmly back in favour of

:02:56.:02:57.

Cilic. Third match point. That was just a battle of wills. You

:02:58.:03:29.

knew where it was going and he just could not convert. Federer again,

:03:30.:03:37.

108 mph with the forehand, that is a lot faster than his normal second.

:03:38.:03:40.

That is courage. CHEERING survival instincts kicking

:03:41.:04:10.

in for Federer after a great return, he put Cilic in a very uncomfortable

:04:11.:04:17.

edition. UMPIRE: 8-7, Federer.

:04:18.:04:29.

Cilic not able to fashion the shot that he wanted. Set point, Federer.

:04:30.:04:37.

Credit to Cilic. Federer asking the question, putting the pressure on,

:04:38.:05:28.

we have seen that working before. And that is how you respond to a

:05:29.:05:39.

crisis. Do you fancy coaching any time soon, Jim?

:05:40.:06:03.

A fourth set point, is second on his own serve.

:06:04.:06:25.

UMPIRE: Mr Federer challenges the call on the service line.

:06:26.:06:33.

He is going to challenge that. Does he go against the grain of the

:06:34.:06:38.

second serve on break points? He does. Cilic makes the return, but

:06:39.:06:56.

it is not his turn to try and finish things. I'm getting Whiplash!

:06:57.:07:02.

Watching this momentum going backhand forth. This is why I love

:07:03.:07:10.

the sport. Watching these players battle each other and themselves.

:07:11.:07:52.

Everything right for Marin Cilic apart from the final shot, some

:07:53.:07:55.

desperate defence. From Roger. Everybody wonders why he keeps going

:07:56.:08:36.

and that is why. How do you ever replace being in the cauldron of

:08:37.:08:41.

competition here on Centre Court? Two sets each.

:08:42.:08:55.

Sue Barker: What a match this is and what a set of tennis! This much

:08:56.:09:02.

absolutely has everything, quality of tennis, tension and drama, all

:09:03.:09:08.

over the place. We will be right back on Centre Court but while the

:09:09.:09:12.

drama was unfolding on Centre Court, Milos Raonic has gone through to the

:09:13.:09:16.

semifinal at Wimbledon, winning in four sets over the Conqueror of

:09:17.:09:26.

Novak Djokovic. Milos Raonic who played so well in the Queen's final

:09:27.:09:30.

against Andy Murray and who locked in form here and has gone through in

:09:31.:09:35.

four sets against a man who has looked so dangerous. He wins the

:09:36.:09:39.

battle of the big servers on Court Number One. And he will play the

:09:40.:09:43.

winner on Centre Court. Everybody having a breather after that, what a

:09:44.:09:47.

set of tennis and what a fightback from Roger Federer. Everybody

:09:48.:09:53.

enjoying the match on the hill for everybody -- and for everybody lucky

:09:54.:09:56.

enough to have a ticket, they have witnessed something special and I

:09:57.:10:00.

hope you are enjoying it at home. Roger Federer back in this match,

:10:01.:10:04.

two sets each. Let's rejoin Centre Court.

:10:05.:10:12.

COMMENTARY: One more was the sign Roger was giving his camp. One more

:10:13.:10:18.

set he needs, but so does Marin Cilic, he just needed one more point

:10:19.:10:21.

on three separate occasions and he could not take it. And these two

:10:22.:10:31.

creating a bit of Wimbledon history. Most people assume the player who

:10:32.:10:36.

comes from 2-0 down has the momentum and wins the majority of the sets.

:10:37.:10:44.

If you take a look back over time, more players win the first after

:10:45.:10:50.

dropping the third and fourth. So history is not on Federer's side

:10:51.:10:53.

from that standpoint. But his disposition must certainly

:10:54.:11:09.

be more solid than that of Marin Cilic right now. Cilic would have

:11:10.:11:17.

every right to be downright surly rates now. -- right now. Not overly

:11:18.:11:28.

demonstrative. He doesn't get very negative on himself. Nope, that is

:11:29.:11:31.

the first bit of emotion with his hand that he kind of just threw

:11:32.:11:33.

away. Roger Goodell against any let down

:11:34.:11:55.

of adrenaline after that pulsating tie break -- guarding against.

:11:56.:12:21.

Cilic we were talking about in the first two sets going wide to the

:12:22.:12:27.

forehand, Federer has really taken advantage of attacking that side of

:12:28.:12:29.

Cilic on the return. Making inroads in this opening

:12:30.:12:34.

Federer service game, the Croatian. Ivan Ljubicic she out of his chair

:12:35.:13:43.

before the ball hit the net, he knew how important that was. It is

:13:44.:13:49.

certainly a long time in this match since we could say that Federer was

:13:50.:13:54.

in the lead. He stuck in, taking his chances. And now the pressure is

:13:55.:13:59.

right on Marin Cilic at the beginning of the Fed. We touched on

:14:00.:14:06.

the fact his last five set match was a coming from behind victory from

:14:07.:14:14.

two sets down against Gael Monfils. He has not lost since losing to

:14:15.:14:18.

Novak Djokovic in 2014. But very different circumstances right now

:14:19.:14:22.

for Cilic. He has got a little extra baggage

:14:23.:14:44.

heading into this set than he had in any of the others. We talked about

:14:45.:14:47.

the psychology of staying in the present and it is easy to look back

:14:48.:14:49.

into the past. Oh, boy.

:14:50.:15:25.

UMPIRE: Mr Cilic is making a challenge on the left baseline.

:15:26.:15:30.

Keeping quiet on these challenges. This was bad luck for Federer, he

:15:31.:15:34.

was going to win this point and is now Cilic gets a first serve

:15:35.:15:39.

instead. Federer was going to have 15-30 in this game. Even in the age

:15:40.:15:48.

of Hawk-Eye, calls can still impact matches.

:15:49.:15:54.

Federer is having a chat to the linesman. He is just irritated.

:15:55.:16:22.

That call may have changed the course of this fifth set. A

:16:23.:16:56.

different endeavour and Federer is so dishevelled, he thought it was a

:16:57.:17:00.

change of ends and he was striding to his chair rather than getting

:17:01.:17:11.

back ready to serve. The only time dishevelled and Federer has been

:17:12.:17:12.

used in a sentence before. It was a good illustration of how

:17:13.:17:44.

important some points can be, even the great players like Federer.

:17:45.:17:59.

Confirmation the line judge got it right that time!

:18:00.:18:22.

Everyone is feeling the pressure. Cilic is going to challenge this

:18:23.:18:33.

overrule from the chair umpire. Federer drops a sandbag over the

:18:34.:19:10.

court over Cilic to go 2-1 up in the fifth. I just wondered whether at

:19:11.:19:20.

40-0 he might change that second serve out wide to the backhand side

:19:21.:19:27.

for later in the set, in case he has more crisis moments. Federer is so

:19:28.:19:31.

good at doing that. Just throwing in enough subterfuge to make you think

:19:32.:19:36.

you might go someplace when he has that school board caution. And best

:19:37.:19:45.

is an advantage sets are no tie break option, somebody has to break

:19:46.:19:48.

serve, and that has been very difficult. Federer 1-61 break point

:19:49.:20:03.

chances. Cilic is 1-8. Jim and I were asked for our opinion before

:20:04.:20:07.

the match, who are you going to take at this stage, Mark Petchey? Get off

:20:08.:20:14.

the fence. I think Roger right now is going to somehow budget. -- edge

:20:15.:20:23.

it. I'm flying in the face of statistics of who normally wins in

:20:24.:20:29.

these circumstances. I can't what I said before the match. You said in

:20:30.:20:36.

five. -- I can't remember. You said Federer. You could not agree with

:20:37.:20:44.

me. I will take a little of your credit.

:20:45.:20:55.

Overcoming that by the challenge he missed earlier in the match, that

:20:56.:21:02.

could get you back to level pegging is. I will take that. 1-2, 0-15,

:21:03.:21:12.

Cilic. He needs to get back to those first serve is hitting the spots. --

:21:13.:21:22.

first serves. And he needs to be the one getting on the offence.

:21:23.:21:46.

It is interesting to see who finishes strongest here. They have

:21:47.:21:54.

both been a little light on matches this season. And certainly, those

:21:55.:22:01.

opening four sets would have taken something out of them and

:22:02.:22:04.

emotionally as well as physically, even though it has been relatively

:22:05.:22:05.

quick. Roger is a little more used to

:22:06.:22:19.

playing at this intensity than Cilic, so it plays in his favour

:22:20.:22:21.

down the stretch. I think I would also slightly

:22:22.:22:36.

question the miles that Roger has in his legs, a disjointed start the

:22:37.:22:39.

season. Knee surgery, illness, back problems. He has not played a

:22:40.:22:45.

massive amount of tennis by his standards and deep in the fifth set,

:22:46.:22:47.

that could have an influence. The good news for Federer is at this

:22:48.:23:13.

stage in the tournaments, he has had a good route to the quarterfinals.

:23:14.:23:16.

He started tentatively probably because of the back issues and the

:23:17.:23:21.

questions he had what he seems fairly uninhibited right now.

:23:22.:24:08.

Roger just throwing in a 0- 30 for Cilic to have something to think

:24:09.:24:20.

about later on, serve and volley. I think you might have hit the same

:24:21.:24:25.

played of grass with that serve previously, it was that accurate. --

:24:26.:24:33.

he might. Outpacing Cilic now, 24-22. On the stroke of three hours.

:24:34.:24:45.

The only thing that looked likely at the third was we would get three

:24:46.:24:52.

sets, let alone three hours. He has had good disguised intensity

:24:53.:24:55.

throughout his career. You can understand why him and Stephan were

:24:56.:24:59.

a good match should, fire and inferno you need to get out of these

:25:00.:25:05.

situations burning brightly -- Stefan Edberg. No question, Federer

:25:06.:25:08.

has managed his energy physically and emotionally so well. You watch

:25:09.:25:13.

him practice at tournaments and he looks like he is barely trying. Even

:25:14.:25:17.

warming up for a match. He is so playful on the court and he brings

:25:18.:25:21.

wonderful energy and travel so likely at least tournaments. He does

:25:22.:25:25.

the hard work quietly, in Dubai or wherever he is training. I hear

:25:26.:25:31.

about it from young Americans brought over to be the pupils of

:25:32.:25:35.

Roger Federer, they talk about how intense birds training box art and

:25:36.:25:38.

we never get to see those, we just see this elegance and style he

:25:39.:25:47.

brings but he does a lot of work -- how intense those training sessions

:25:48.:25:50.

can be. And managing the emotion even down a break, there was never

:25:51.:25:56.

any panic. He was just waiting for his levels to improve. To seize the

:25:57.:26:03.

opportunity. Now up 3-2 in the fifth.

:26:04.:26:36.

Quite a way away from the finish line, but Federer has saved some

:26:37.:26:45.

match points already. The last male player to save a match point in a

:26:46.:26:50.

major and go on to win it did it against Roger Federer. In 2011, the

:26:51.:26:53.

US Open semifinals. Probably one of the most famous

:26:54.:27:10.

shots in the last decade. Novak Djokovic ripping that forehand

:27:11.:27:12.

winner against Roger Federer. At 15-40. And Federer missing the

:27:13.:27:20.

forehand on the tape as he served, and Novak Djokovic was the winner of

:27:21.:27:21.

the match and the title. Oh, my! The best shot of the day!

:27:22.:27:29.

How does he conjure that up? In case you are wondering, Federer

:27:30.:28:12.

has never done it, never needed to, I guess. Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras,

:28:13.:28:18.

Boris Becker, they all have. It is not too late in his career to

:28:19.:28:50.

add something else to the legacy, is it? Which is already rich and varied

:28:51.:29:00.

enough. But an opportunity here in the fifth for Federer the break. --

:29:01.:29:05.

the break. Federer, there, early the rally. A

:29:06.:29:38.

little tight looking to drive the rally down the line. It was not a

:29:39.:29:45.

convincing chart. -- convincing chart.

:29:46.:30:27.

Break points came and went. Dead even again.

:30:28.:31:17.

Changing up to serve. Federer, slower than some of the second

:31:18.:31:24.

serves. 105mph out wide. Cilic, just a little early.

:31:25.:32:04.

UMPIRE: Mr Cilic is challenging the call on the left. Always called out.

:32:05.:32:11.

This will be a good result for Roger Federer, what ever way you look at

:32:12.:32:15.

it. If it misses, he has won the point, if it is in he gets another

:32:16.:32:17.

chance to control the rally. Be giving away too Federer early in

:32:18.:32:42.

the set and then gave one right back here. -- he gave one way to Federer.

:32:43.:32:54.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt. A number of witnesses in the

:32:55.:33:05.

players box who also lived every moment of the drama as it has

:33:06.:33:08.

unfolded. Nervous tension on the court and in the box and in the

:33:09.:33:12.

crowd. Probably a bit of nervous tension in the locker room because

:33:13.:33:15.

unless you play the first Match of the Day, you do not know what time

:33:16.:33:20.

you're going to start and I'm sure Murray and Tsonga have gone through

:33:21.:33:26.

quite a few warm-ups already. Froggy emotion, there has been a little bit

:33:27.:33:30.

of a change from how Marin Cilic was controlling the match, and since

:33:31.:33:40.

sets two, he has had a few more forehands and less backhands. Roger

:33:41.:33:48.

changing things up, with Federer getting more forehands into play.

:33:49.:33:51.

The pattern of the rallies has changed but right now it is just

:33:52.:33:54.

about finding the right shot at the right time. Well executed break

:33:55.:34:00.

point, that is what it is boiling down to. Neither player able to do

:34:01.:34:05.

that in these latter stages of the match. Who has the nerve? Who can

:34:06.:34:11.

get his feet moving and get a loose enough to show us what is left in

:34:12.:34:18.

this match. Federer, can he hang on and take his chances? He has had a

:34:19.:34:20.

few. Almost trying to overplay that

:34:21.:35:33.

backhand slice, trying to get so much work on the ball. Coming from

:35:34.:35:37.

high to low, you can see what he thinks about that shot.

:35:38.:35:43.

That was a downright tantrum on Roger Federer's scale. At this stage

:35:44.:35:54.

in the match, you do not want to be giving away cheap points.

:35:55.:36:43.

Watch the racket head acceleration. Such a good second serve. Federer

:36:44.:36:50.

did well to plot the return is short and low. Again, it is a question of

:36:51.:36:56.

getting that the work right, getting up to the ball quick enough to

:36:57.:37:01.

accelerate on the shot. -- getting the footwork right.

:37:02.:37:12.

Federer with another break point chance. Cilic's forehand, he does

:37:13.:37:24.

not do enough with that approach shot and as a result, Federer makes

:37:25.:37:33.

him pay. A smart pass, running that far. There was always going to be a

:37:34.:37:35.

little space down the line. Efficient creativity but most

:37:36.:38:48.

importantly, nerve. A short delivered without self belief. Break

:38:49.:38:54.

point again. -- with utter self belief.

:38:55.:38:59.

That is going to be the first serve and volley for the entire match from

:39:00.:39:06.

Marin Cilic. That, for me, is a brain cramp.

:39:07.:39:19.

And that sends a signal. Too tight to play. And he is going to

:39:20.:39:29.

challenge this call, but I believe Roger Federer is going to be serving

:39:30.:39:33.

for a spot in the semifinals here momentarily.

:39:34.:39:45.

That unforced error from Marin Cilic, it was certainly one of the

:39:46.:39:51.

factors. I don't know whether the umpire said

:39:52.:40:04.

he has one challenge remaining or his challenges fading but after an

:40:05.:40:09.

hour and a half, it looks as if Marin Cilic, who was almost going

:40:10.:40:13.

towards his way into his first ever Wimbledon semifinal... But Federer

:40:14.:40:19.

now on the brink of his 11th Wimbledon semi.

:40:20.:40:24.

A 26th ace brings up two match points for Federer. Remarkable. So

:40:25.:41:57.

much has been said about this great champion over the years. And yet he

:41:58.:42:05.

continues to add chapters to this legacy that he has given the sport.

:42:06.:42:10.

He is truly one of the greatest players ever of the game. No matter

:42:11.:42:15.

if he goes on to win this title or not, another piece of Wimbledon

:42:16.:42:20.

history created here as he comes back from two sets to love down,

:42:21.:42:27.

saving three match points, and in a moment of euphoria for Federer and

:42:28.:42:31.

it stands, a moment to ponder the pain that Marin Cilic must be

:42:32.:42:36.

feeling right now. It was all they are for Cilic. He had the chance.

:42:37.:42:42.

Three break points in a role in the third set and the chance to deliver

:42:43.:42:51.

a knockout punch to Roger Federer. The last time they played in the US

:42:52.:42:57.

Open in the semifinals, and we talked so much about Roger Federer,

:42:58.:43:03.

but it is his nerves that won him this match today. Something Marin

:43:04.:43:08.

Cilic could not do with all of those break points on second serve.

:43:09.:43:17.

Federer had his chance there. And he got it. Another semifinal here at

:43:18.:43:25.

the All-England Club. One wonders, and only Marin Cilic can answer

:43:26.:43:32.

this, as we see Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue magazine,

:43:33.:43:38.

and his mother, absolutely thrilled by how the outcome ended for Roger,

:43:39.:43:44.

completing that comeback. A phenomenal match. And he is chatting

:43:45.:43:49.

to Lee McKenzie now. Roger, congratulations. We have been

:43:50.:43:53.

treated to such an incredible match of tennis, and a standing ovation at

:43:54.:43:57.

the end. After over three hours of tennis, you are through to your 11

:43:58.:44:00.

Wimbledon semifinal. Some are the emotions? A lot happened out there.

:44:01.:44:07.

It was nice and warm, nice to play these conditions. Marin is such a

:44:08.:44:12.

wonderful player and I knew I was in so much trouble in the third. Again

:44:13.:44:17.

in the fourth. So it was great fun playing against Marin and he is one

:44:18.:44:20.

of the nicest guys on the tour. I feel sorry for him but for me,

:44:21.:44:25.

obviously the dream continues. I could not be happier. I think I

:44:26.:44:29.

fought well and I played super great at the end. I am very pleased. There

:44:30.:44:33.

was a shot of you when you've lost the first two sets, sitting in your

:44:34.:44:38.

chair and steering calmly ahead. Give us an insight into what goes on

:44:39.:44:43.

in your mind. Do you always know you can come back? You hope so but you

:44:44.:44:50.

don't. You know, he had one chance and he took it and the next thing

:44:51.:44:55.

you know, two sets to love on grass, that is how it goes. He was playing

:44:56.:44:59.

very well. On the return, he was reading my serve, and I could not

:45:00.:45:06.

retailers. It was not going well for me. -- I could not read his. I hoped

:45:07.:45:13.

for his level to drop a little bit, and that was fortunately exactly

:45:14.:45:18.

what happened. The half-volley could have gone into the stands but it

:45:19.:45:22.

stays in. And then you are still in the Mansion you can turn it around.

:45:23.:45:26.

And the break was crazy. It was an incredible match. At the beginning

:45:27.:45:30.

of last week, you were not sure how strong your back was. You have been

:45:31.:45:34.

playing some incredible tennis. How far off your best you at the moment?

:45:35.:45:39.

I think the last three sets were really good. As the match went on,

:45:40.:45:48.

it is really encouraging to see that I am actually improving as the match

:45:49.:45:51.

goes on. I was able to sustain a really high level of play. My legs

:45:52.:45:54.

was there, my back was there. Against the big server it is crucial

:45:55.:45:57.

not to fall behind. I was able to do all of those things. Mentally, this

:45:58.:46:01.

give me a boost and I was really pleased, ecstatic that I was able to

:46:02.:46:06.

come through. Your next opponent is Milos Raonic, and you beat him in

:46:07.:46:10.

the semifinal here two years ago. Hacked Off is this next match going

:46:11.:46:14.

to be? Right now, standing here, very tough. But I have the next day

:46:15.:46:23.

to recover. He is a wonderful player and he is improving. I am excited to

:46:24.:46:33.

play him. Thank you. SUE BARKER: Roger sounding so cool and calm. No

:46:34.:46:37.

one else on Centre Court feels like that. That has been a treat to

:46:38.:46:42.

watch. Everybody on their feet, saluting a great champion, not just

:46:43.:46:45.

a great champion but one of the great fighters. 2-1 down, and he has

:46:46.:46:54.

come back. What does that mean, I wonder? I am number one? He

:46:55.:46:58.

certainly is. The 10th time he has come back from two sets to one down,

:46:59.:47:06.

the champion with an eighth in his sights. He says that Marin is one of

:47:07.:47:10.

the nice guys on the tour and Marin Cilic must feel like he has missed

:47:11.:47:18.

his opportunity. Two sets to love up, against Federer, and he has

:47:19.:47:20.

played his part in this wonderful match. But Federer marches on, and

:47:21.:47:24.

what a treat to see this 34-year-old still at his best and still

:47:25.:47:28.

producing these magical matches. For all of us to enjoy. And we have

:47:29.:47:34.

heard that he is playing Milos Raonic, and this is only finished it

:47:35.:47:42.

off, absolutely delighted, a big serving jewel on Court Number One.

:47:43.:47:45.

Sam Querrey has had a wonderful tournament year, defeating Novak

:47:46.:47:48.

Djokavic, and he goes out in the quarterfinal stage. And it is Raonic

:47:49.:47:54.

who is through to the semifinal. Raonic against Federer will be

:47:55.:48:00.

something to look forward to. And this is the second quarterfinal on

:48:01.:48:04.

Court Number One. Tomas Berdych against Lucas Pouille, who is in his

:48:05.:48:08.

first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. Very tight, three games all in the

:48:09.:48:12.

opening set. That matches on BBC Two. -- that match is on BBC Two. So

:48:13.:48:20.

much happening here. Everyone is going out for a breather but they

:48:21.:48:23.

better not be too long because coming up next on Centre Court, more

:48:24.:48:28.

athleticism, and a great variety of shots from two of the best on the

:48:29.:48:29.

surface. Yes, it is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga up

:48:30.:49:15.

against Andy Murray. Andy Murray has looked ruthless through the opening

:49:16.:49:19.

week of this tournament year at Wimbledon, yet to drop a set going

:49:20.:49:24.

into the last eight. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has come back through an

:49:25.:49:26.

absolute classic victory against John Isner, and he was a little bit

:49:27.:49:31.

weary, although he did is defeat Richard Gasquet when he was forced

:49:32.:49:35.

to withdraw. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Murray next on Centre Court.

:49:36.:49:41.

Tim Henman, what a match. How does he do that? He looked down and out

:49:42.:49:47.

at two sets down. He certainly did. At 1240, Cilic was the better

:49:48.:49:54.

player. -- at 0-40. If anything, Federer was a bit flat. You almost

:49:55.:50:00.

sensed from the crowd's reaction that they wanted to see more tennis

:50:01.:50:03.

and he suddenly was able to hold serve. Then he broke in the next

:50:04.:50:08.

game and slowly started to turn it around but they both had problems.

:50:09.:50:12.

They were both grating a lot of opportunities, and I think there

:50:13.:50:16.

were 16 or 17 break points between them, but they only managed three

:50:17.:50:19.

breaks of serve. Federer maintained the belief that he could find a way

:50:20.:50:24.

to read through. Let's talk about the tie-break. Set point, match

:50:25.:50:29.

points all over the place. Is this what the tournament needed, a great

:50:30.:50:37.

match like that? Yes, and from Cilic's point of view, he did

:50:38.:50:42.

everything except win that match. He had match point opportunities, four

:50:43.:50:44.

second serves on those big points and he did not get the ball back in

:50:45.:50:48.

play. Those are the types of shots that he will be going over and over

:50:49.:50:52.

in his mind after the match coming up. He makes it look so easy at

:50:53.:50:58.

times, Federer, with his technique and movement but sometimes that

:50:59.:51:01.

overshadows his intensity and his will to win. And it really was the

:51:02.:51:05.

will to win that put him over the line because he was not playing

:51:06.:51:08.

particularly well. He got his level up there and he was able to find a

:51:09.:51:16.

way to win. The players are on their way into Centre Court. And here they

:51:17.:51:20.

come, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga coming out behind Andy Murray.

:51:21.:51:38.

I guess it was not quite the reception that they've expected but

:51:39.:51:45.

everyone after the Federer match has probably gone for a breather. David

:51:46.:51:51.

Beckham still there with his family. A big Andy Murray supporter. And he

:51:52.:51:55.

knows that Andy Murray has his work cut out against this man,

:51:56.:51:57.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray against longer, that is the match here and I

:51:58.:52:01.

am delighted to say that another grand slam winner joins me on Centre

:52:02.:52:05.

Court, Lleyton Hewitt, welcome to the team. Great to be here. What do

:52:06.:52:11.

you make of that last match? I did not know how it was going to end.

:52:12.:52:15.

Everyone was pulling for Roger to get back into the match and in the

:52:16.:52:19.

end, it turned into an epic. I think it got better as the match went on.

:52:20.:52:23.

Federer freed up and you could see the belief in his eyes. Now he is

:52:24.:52:26.

through to another semi and who knows what is going to happen.

:52:27.:52:30.

Interesting that he said he could not read Cilic's served in the first

:52:31.:52:35.

two sets. And he was worried about his movement. But he looked as good

:52:36.:52:40.

as ever in that fifth set. There was a backhand pass in that fourth game

:52:41.:52:46.

which was vintage Federer. He has not played a lot of matches this

:52:47.:52:49.

year and a really good run here, he has given himself every chance. How

:52:50.:52:54.

exhausted will he be? I know he has day off but what he just went

:52:55.:52:57.

through is physically, mentally and emotionally draining. Yes, but he

:52:58.:53:02.

had a pretty comfortable draw coming in. He survived relatively easily in

:53:03.:53:06.

that first three or four matches and now he has put himself in a position

:53:07.:53:11.

of another semi final. Milos Raonic on the other side, it will be a

:53:12.:53:14.

similar battle. He will have to weather the storm and take the

:53:15.:53:21.

chances when he needs to. You know him so well, Tim. He raises his game

:53:22.:53:25.

when it matters. This is his home away from home. I think it is an

:53:26.:53:30.

interesting matchup in the next round because he will be fatigued.

:53:31.:53:34.

He has not had a massive amount of match time this year but when you're

:53:35.:53:38.

playing against someone like Raonic, the rallies will not be that long.

:53:39.:53:43.

He needs to use his skills in getting the ball back into play, but

:53:44.:53:49.

from Raonic's perspective, he has been playing very well in the final

:53:50.:53:53.

of Queen's. And outcomes Andy Murray to face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Andy has

:53:54.:53:56.

looked very good in this tournament so far. He has had a very good draw

:53:57.:54:02.

so far. The big test was against Nick Kyrgios and I think he

:54:03.:54:05.

weathered the storm. That really opened up throughout the second set

:54:06.:54:09.

and he took full advantage. He is playing great and moving grate. He

:54:10.:54:12.

is going to be very confident but this is another step up against a

:54:13.:54:16.

quality player with a lot of firepower. And he knows how to play

:54:17.:54:20.

on the surface. He moves extremely well. He has a big game and his

:54:21.:54:24.

serve and forehand, those will be his big weapons out there today, but

:54:25.:54:29.

he is not afraid to move in and take it to Andy. The big question is

:54:30.:54:33.

Andy's second serve and whether Tsonga can attack him. But he has

:54:34.:54:43.

improved, hasn't he? He has command under these conditions he can be

:54:44.:54:49.

aggressive. For me, Tsonga's strengths are his serve and

:54:50.:54:52.

forehand, and it is whether Andy can get into those rallies and target

:54:53.:54:56.

his backhand. That is definitely a weakness and the back-end is Andy's

:54:57.:55:00.

strength. Another grand slam winner joined us. You were not speechless

:55:01.:55:07.

after that, were you? As close to speechless as I will ever be. They

:55:08.:55:12.

do a lot of remakes in movies, the great escape with Steve McQueen, and

:55:13.:55:17.

I think we have seen the guy who is going to star in the next one. I

:55:18.:55:21.

cannot believe that Roger Federer won that match. Cilic was playing

:55:22.:55:27.

unbelievable tennis. How in the world did he figure out how to win?

:55:28.:55:31.

He had so many chances. But Roger Federer on the other side, 5-6,

:55:32.:55:37.

match point, and the tie-break, that is a killer. You have to love Roger

:55:38.:55:42.

that he is able to find a way to do that. And some of the winners he

:55:43.:55:49.

pulled off, it was Federer at his best. Cilic was hitting the ball and

:55:50.:55:58.

serving big, and he was going after it and moving forward. You had every

:55:59.:56:02.

reason to fear that it could be routine but then when he won the

:56:03.:56:07.

set, Cilic dug in and did a good job to get himself back in position. I

:56:08.:56:13.

cannot believe he won that match. We were saying we need a great match at

:56:14.:56:16.

this tournament. We did not have a great match, probably the greatest

:56:17.:56:21.

ever with everything surrounding it, all the drama. Absolutely, and Roger

:56:22.:56:26.

coming in so under done into this tournament, a few question marks

:56:27.:56:29.

over his body and how he would respond, that is the perfect answer

:56:30.:56:34.

right there. So now, Andy Murray, what happens? There is hardly any

:56:35.:56:38.

crowd here. It is difficult when you have an epic like that. Everybody

:56:39.:56:42.

needs a break. The players have gone to get a drink, the audience has

:56:43.:56:48.

gone to get some fresh air. You are expecting a big ovation when Andy

:56:49.:56:51.

Murray comes out but I am sure the crowd will get to their seats pretty

:56:52.:56:55.

quickly and get behind him. You are a committee member now. It's not my

:56:56.:57:03.

fault! Why don't they wait 20 or 30 minutes, give the crowd a chance to

:57:04.:57:07.

regroup? That was an incredible match and for the players it gives

:57:08.:57:11.

them an extra bit of time. Can I pass the buck? Is it to the

:57:12.:57:17.

television direction that they do not want to? We would definitely

:57:18.:57:20.

agree with that. It would give us time to look back at that match. And

:57:21.:57:27.

then it puts Andy Murray later into the evening, and it means he gets

:57:28.:57:31.

more exciting as people are coming home from work. Will you bring that

:57:32.:57:34.

up at the next committee meeting? I well. -- I will. We were talking

:57:35.:57:42.

about Tsonga's backhand, which might be a target for Murray in this one.

:57:43.:57:48.

I think it is. Jo is another guy, you do not know exactly what to

:57:49.:57:55.

expect. I saw him at the French, he came from two sets down against

:57:56.:58:00.

Baghdatis, and the next thing you know, he is up 5-2 and he defaults.

:58:01.:58:04.

He does not play any matches. The fact he beat is now the way that he

:58:05.:58:13.

did, the best thing, Richard Gasquet to default at 4-2, that was the best

:58:14.:58:17.

thing that could happen. At least his legs will be fresh and trust me,

:58:18.:58:23.

will need them. He needs to try to keep the rallies are short as

:58:24.:58:29.

possible. Obviously that 1-2 hit, he needs to really go forward when he

:58:30.:58:32.

has that opportunity. He needs to put pressure back on Andy. Because

:58:33.:58:36.

the more balls that Andy can get back in court, it is swinging in his

:58:37.:58:41.

advantage. He has a great volley and he loves to come forward. He has to

:58:42.:58:46.

try to do that today? He came from two sets to love down, against the

:58:47.:58:52.

man who just came from two sets to love down. I am surprised that he

:58:53.:59:00.

does not come in more because he is acrobatic and athletic and he likes

:59:01.:59:08.

to move forward. He has not had any success against Andy on grass, which

:59:09.:59:13.

is a bit surprising. You mentioned Andy's second serve, and it has

:59:14.:59:16.

improved but that is probably the only weakness in his game. At the

:59:17.:59:21.

moment. The Australian Open final this year, his forehand was a big

:59:22.:59:25.

weakness. He started attacking off his back and so much harder.

:59:26.:59:29.

Throughout this year, he has hit his forehand is extremely well,

:59:30.:59:32.

especially under pressure. Likes turning a lot of these matches into

:59:33.:59:38.

physical battles over five sets. He would back himself against nearly

:59:39.:59:41.

anyone. And it has only been Novak that has been able to stand up to

:59:42.:59:45.

them over five sets. You used to like a physical battle. But not

:59:46.:59:50.

always on my terms. Absolutely. But as far as Andy goes, his movement is

:59:51.:59:52.

so good. Just dwelling on the second serve,

:59:53.:00:03.

it will be the shortest ball you get against Murray because his ground

:00:04.:00:06.

strokes are so effective and he hits deep and hard. And when you move as

:00:07.:00:11.

well as he does, the opponent has to go closer and closer to the lines.

:00:12.:00:15.

When you are more aggressive and take more risks, you can make more

:00:16.:00:19.

unforced errors, so I don't think Tsonga can play a consistently high

:00:20.:00:23.

enough level to get through this match. We will have great rallies in

:00:24.:00:27.

this match, great tennis and shotmaking. That is for sure, this

:00:28.:00:32.

is a Wimbledon quarterfinal, Murray is playing the best tennis of his

:00:33.:00:36.

life, Tsonga has the greatest opportunity he has had for a while

:00:37.:00:39.

so hopefully they can both rise to the occasion in the way of the first

:00:40.:00:44.

match. It is going to be a hard call. If we do, John McEnroe might

:00:45.:00:50.

not be able to talk in the commentary! The players will have

:00:51.:00:54.

been lacing up their shoes at the end of the third set. That is one of

:00:55.:00:57.

the toughest things as a player, they would not know when they would

:00:58.:01:01.

be on Ulster but they are both experienced and have been around so

:01:02.:01:04.

they would quietly be getting ready but not preparing to much and they

:01:05.:01:08.

will be ready to go when the first ball is hit. It is great to talk to

:01:09.:01:13.

you, Lleyton Hewitt is going to the commentary box with John McEnroe to

:01:14.:01:16.

join Andrew Castle. All yours, Andy. COMMENTARY: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who

:01:17.:01:27.

played Richard Gasquet in the previous round against the world

:01:28.:01:32.

number two Andy Murray. He achieved Wimbledon success in 2013. The

:01:33.:01:36.

reignition of this relationship with Ivan Lendl has galvanised his game,

:01:37.:01:43.

the Queen's Club champion against twice Wimbledon semifinalist

:01:44.:01:46.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. A match to savour. Looking forward to this one!

:01:47.:01:56.

Successive Wimbledon quarterfinals and he has only lost two, Andy

:01:57.:02:08.

Murray. Rafael Nadal in 2008, Grigor Dimitrov in 2013, the defending

:02:09.:02:11.

champion. The weather is good, no need for the roof. Tsonga won the

:02:12.:02:18.

toss and he elected to serve first, not a surprise.

:02:19.:02:23.

UMPIRE: First set, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to serve, ready. Play.

:02:24.:03:41.

This happened to Tsonga when he got to the semifinals of the French

:03:42.:03:47.

anti-played David The Rec, nobody was in the crowd. And he just

:03:48.:03:52.

absolutely was not there in the first set -- David Ferrer. I doubt

:03:53.:03:55.

it will affect Andy Murray in the same way. For a match of this

:03:56.:04:01.

magnitude to start with a crowd like this. What was the year he blew

:04:02.:04:07.

Federer off the court and he lost the David Ferrer, that was a

:04:08.:04:08.

surprise. They will be here. It has been the story of his career.

:04:09.:04:29.

He has had these flashes and moments of brilliance and he has not been

:04:30.:04:32.

able to keep it together all the time.

:04:33.:04:47.

And that will do nicely for Game one. He is off and running. So many

:04:48.:04:56.

Keys to this match, can Tsonga defend his backhand here and if he

:04:57.:05:01.

comes to the net, can he make it an effective enough volley? One of the

:05:02.:05:08.

finest with the lob of all time. Another one here, later on she

:05:09.:05:14.

would. I like his attitude against John Isner, he had a battle from

:05:15.:05:20.

behind and he stuck with it. In a different league, a different level.

:05:21.:05:24.

It showed you a lot about Jo-Wilfried's resolve right now and

:05:25.:05:28.

his intensity. I what of oxides to this match for him. -- a lot of

:05:29.:05:34.

oxides to this match for him. UMPIRE: Mr Murray challenging the

:05:35.:06:23.

call, write baseline. The ball was called out. Brush the right

:06:24.:06:30.

baseline. You are recently retired, I think! The guys, they always look

:06:31.:06:36.

up. Do you think if they look up, they should not be allowed a

:06:37.:06:41.

challenge? Yes, you are right, they should not. It is just a natural

:06:42.:06:49.

thing. I would just have love to see you playing with Hawk-Eye. I would

:06:50.:06:53.

have love that! It would have been less interesting!

:06:54.:07:14.

I would have directed my energies in a more positive way. I would not be

:07:15.:07:22.

in this booth! You retired three times. You kept coming back. I never

:07:23.:07:32.

retired. Hoping for that comeback! Wild card! It is 50-31 Murray's

:07:33.:07:40.

first service game, early pressure and only five minutes played --

:07:41.:07:43.

50-30. Three straight points, Murray gets

:07:44.:08:54.

out of the service game, at 1-1. We have got Lleyton Hewitt, we have to

:08:55.:09:03.

ask, Nick Kyrgios. Don't start that! You had your say last night and the

:09:04.:09:09.

day before! If you insist! Does he listen to you, Nick? We have open

:09:10.:09:16.

discussions about a lot of things. He is still young and he is still

:09:17.:09:20.

learning and he is mature and as he goes by. He knows that he has the

:09:21.:09:25.

make more commitment to the sport, the shore. But we all know how much

:09:26.:09:32.

flair and talent he does possess. -- the shore.

:09:33.:10:07.

Great construction from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the moment, quite clinical

:10:08.:10:12.

in his attack. He has got a big forehand. Excellent volleys. If I

:10:13.:10:21.

were around him, I would encourage him to move forward more often.

:10:22.:11:13.

Certainly the type of points that Murray would prefer to play. Tsonga

:11:14.:11:21.

is content to battle from the baseline. I don't think it will be a

:11:22.:11:26.

very long match if he continues with that game plan.

:11:27.:11:41.

I think that 1- to punch is the perfect play for Jo-Wilfried today,

:11:42.:11:49.

he has to look to take his opportunities. Good first serve into

:11:50.:11:54.

the court, using his big forehand. As John said, he is such a good

:11:55.:11:59.

athlete and not an easy guide to pass, all the lob so he does present

:12:00.:12:07.

a big problem for Andy at the net. -- and to lob.

:12:08.:12:56.

He rushed him out and he looks a bit tight and wound up. Flying at him at

:12:57.:13:07.

the moment. He needs a couple of easy first serves.

:13:08.:13:51.

He seems to have got something in his eye.

:13:52.:14:29.

Some Murray with an opportunity. They could water this court, that

:14:30.:14:38.

sounds strange, but it is dusty at the backhand they could do that

:14:39.:14:45.

after a five set match. -- at the back, and they could. One of the

:14:46.:14:49.

things that Tsonga has the worry about is how many returns of serve

:14:50.:14:55.

Andy Murray makes and throughout the tournament, he gets the ball back in

:14:56.:15:00.

play so much of the time. In fact, 82% of the time. On first serve and

:15:01.:15:08.

second. This is a tough thing to serve too, isn't it? Absolutely and

:15:09.:15:14.

that is why he is number two in the world, it is only himself and Novak

:15:15.:15:16.

Djokovic that do this so well and they keep mounting pressure the

:15:17.:15:20.

entire time. Even for the best service in the world, they have to

:15:21.:15:25.

the perfect first serve not to play another shot and get a cheap point

:15:26.:15:29.

even on the biggest points. I also think he has got more aggressive off

:15:30.:15:38.

the return. Which is something before Ivan Lendl coaches were

:15:39.:15:42.

pushing for. Now he is being more aggressive and he gets a good look

:15:43.:15:47.

at it and it is doubly dangerous. It is clear that Tsonga has to have a

:15:48.:15:51.

big serving day he wants to make this a real match. He is capable.

:15:52.:16:06.

The crowd starting to get back here. Plenty of empty seeds. -- empty

:16:07.:16:13.

chairs. Andy Murray describes Ivan Lendl is

:16:14.:16:41.

the best coach he has ever had. It is the relationship that bought the

:16:42.:16:47.

most fruit, certainly. Twice a finalist here in 1986 and 1987, Pat

:16:48.:16:55.

-- beating him in those finals. Nicholas Tsonga's coach. --

:16:56.:17:34.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's coach. He has got empty seeds in his own box! Yes,

:17:35.:17:37.

that is not a good sign! A lot of people want to know who the

:17:38.:18:04.

gentleman is wearing the hat. That is David spearing. He is 78 years of

:18:05.:18:11.

age. He will thank us for this! The chief steward. Some call him King of

:18:12.:18:15.

Wimbledon and others Colonel Saunders. If you are in the box, you

:18:16.:18:19.

call him serve. -- serve. We are all coming to grips with what

:18:20.:18:45.

happened just a couple of minutes ago. Players included. Trying to

:18:46.:18:54.

settle into this. They thought they would be on two hours ago.

:18:55.:19:02.

UMPIRE: Let, first serve. I can show you Tsonga's serving

:19:03.:19:07.

patterns after this service game. Where he serves. I think Ivan Lendl

:19:08.:19:15.

showed him that before! There is definitely a pattern to it and so

:19:16.:19:19.

many statistics and numbers and graphics these days that you can

:19:20.:19:23.

look it all up. If you become predictable to a return up like

:19:24.:19:26.

Murray, there is going to be trouble.

:19:27.:19:47.

John, how much would you like Tsonga on that first serve on the serve and

:19:48.:19:54.

volley compare to the second serve, he hits and wait, against a good

:19:55.:20:00.

return player like Andy? It goes to what Andy was saying, he needs to

:20:01.:20:04.

keep him off balance and not be predictable. That is the last thing

:20:05.:20:12.

you want to do with Murray. He serves so big, he is going to

:20:13.:20:20.

need to come in. Most of the time, people only get the ball back.

:20:21.:20:32.

That is the first, and perfect, he has done it. Unbelievable lob.

:20:33.:20:46.

Coming in off a PC bold Don. Later on, you got -- later view it, you

:20:47.:20:52.

broke a lot of people like that. One. Each, Andy Murray is throwing

:20:53.:21:00.

it up, giving himself a half opportunity at 15-30.

:21:01.:21:56.

Yes. He has got the ball on a string and if you control the ball, you

:21:57.:22:07.

control your opponent. I certainly think that Tsonga would want to keep

:22:08.:22:14.

these points shorter. He appeared to have a couple of opportunities. I

:22:15.:22:21.

think he is going to win a very small percentage of points over ten

:22:22.:22:23.

shots. He certainly tightened up on that

:22:24.:22:39.

backhand. A great chance to get the early break.

:22:40.:22:59.

That is the serve. That took him to the 2008 Australian Open final. His

:23:00.:23:08.

only grand slam final appearance, and he beat Andy Murray in the first

:23:09.:23:10.

round of that. One of the only times he has beaten

:23:11.:23:28.

Andy Murray. It is not a good head-to-head, 12-2, Andy Murray.

:23:29.:23:32.

They have played 12 times on grass and Murray has won the lot. That is

:23:33.:23:41.

the only time he lost to a Frenchman in a grand slam.

:23:42.:24:02.

This is cumulative pressure when it you are serving to somebody like

:24:03.:24:10.

Murray, who makes, as we said, eight out of ten returns on break point

:24:11.:24:13.

up. That is the wi-fi pass code! Yes, it is another one! It is

:24:14.:24:39.

because Murray is returning. And in this quarterfinal, that man is

:24:40.:24:46.

leading 3-2 with a break, Murray. Sue Barker: Still struggling with

:24:47.:24:50.

his eye but he is a break of serve up on Centre Court. Back in just a

:24:51.:24:56.

moment. While Andy has broken serve on Centre Court, his brother Jamie

:24:57.:25:00.

is on Court 18 and struggling a bit in this match. A break of serve down

:25:01.:25:05.

in the fifth and final set. They have come back from 2-0 down and won

:25:06.:25:12.

the first set tie-break 13-11 but now working hard to find a way into

:25:13.:25:18.

the match. That is due to Murray and their father William as well. --

:25:19.:25:23.

Judy Murray. They watching Jamie and Andy has got Kim and Ivan Lendl so

:25:24.:25:32.

they are supporting Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares on 18. That is on the

:25:33.:25:38.

red button. And on BBC Two, it is Tomas Berdych in control, a set and

:25:39.:25:44.

3-0 against Lucas Pouille. Tomas Berdych in control.

:25:45.:25:49.

Back now to Centre Court. COMMENTARY: Seven the court, Andy

:25:50.:25:55.

Murray -- Centre Court and Andy Murray a break up against

:25:56.:26:01.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He has not lost a set at this Championships yet. Not

:26:02.:26:05.

only that, he has not been taken to a tie-break either. Tsonga

:26:06.:26:14.

meanwhile, a couple of rounds ago, he laid John Isner and went to 19-17

:26:15.:26:20.

in the fifth and came back from two sets down debt she played. 3-2. --

:26:21.:26:30.

and he played. Not hitting the ball very cleanly, Tsonga, so far. A

:26:31.:26:38.

tough start for him. He has quickly got to block out of

:26:39.:26:55.

his mind the last three points of the previous game when he got broken

:26:56.:26:59.

and he tried a drop shot and two very bad double faults to lose

:27:00.:27:04.

serve. And it has continued here so far. Ellie Goulding.

:27:05.:27:23.

Ivan Lendl has been coming here a number of years and Jamie Delgado

:27:24.:27:28.

has played 23 championships. You would assume that is part of the

:27:29.:28:41.

game plan to try to take the second set early and to move in on it.

:28:42.:29:23.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is happy to trade from the back of the court, 18

:29:24.:29:31.

shots, showing admirable patience. Not the type of rally you want to

:29:32.:29:35.

see him play against Murray, in his camp, and would not have thought. It

:29:36.:29:39.

is back to deuce. That is great defence from Murray.

:29:40.:30:26.

Wonderful fans from Tsonga. -- wonderful offence. It was a great

:30:27.:30:34.

forehand. Andy Murray dug it out. But Jo was sitting there to play the

:30:35.:30:41.

drop shot. Giving himself an opportunity to break straight back.

:30:42.:30:47.

A little distracted with that right eye at the moment.

:30:48.:31:00.

You will have to play another. The missing first serve. I think it will

:31:01.:31:14.

also help them win numerous additional majors in his career, the

:31:15.:31:20.

willingness to come forward. He has great hands. Soft hands. He does not

:31:21.:31:22.

use them nearly enough. The points that have become a

:31:23.:31:49.

contest in the last ten minutes or so, Murray has won many of them.

:31:50.:31:55.

What a great return of serve. Hard, flat and deep. Mourinho Lee had to

:31:56.:31:58.

sit on the baseline to play that shot. -- Murray had to sit on the

:31:59.:32:01.

baseline. Interesting that you should say he

:32:02.:32:29.

should volley more. You played Nadal in the semifinal. You didn't have to

:32:30.:32:35.

bring that up! There is more on Nick Kyrgios coming!

:32:36.:33:00.

Bitcoins, getting it back inside the lines. That is what has to happen if

:33:01.:33:07.

you are going to beat Murray. I'm surprised that he did not run around

:33:08.:33:09.

and hit a forehand. He has made a couple of loose

:33:10.:33:37.

forehand errors here. Trying to consolidate this break.

:33:38.:34:14.

A surprising mistake. He sprayed a couple long. I think this spotty

:34:15.:34:25.

play so far, a lot of it is due to the stress involved in waiting to

:34:26.:34:28.

get on the court, not knowing when you are going to play. These guys

:34:29.:34:32.

have not gotten their a game going yet.

:34:33.:35:00.

A devilish slice. It is not getting up off the rider more than three or

:35:01.:35:12.

four inches. I just think when Jo gets those opportunities, he has to

:35:13.:35:17.

be looking to get around and use his forehand. Even if it takes him out,

:35:18.:35:22.

he needs to try to be the aggressor in the point.

:35:23.:35:31.

Now that is the forehand were talking about. On this very court,

:35:32.:35:42.

that is what Joel used to smack Roger Federer write-off. And he can

:35:43.:35:49.

do that to anybody. He can turn the racket out of your hands.

:35:50.:36:49.

34 minutes played. It has been a bit of a battle. If Murray get out of

:36:50.:36:59.

this game, Jo Wilfred Tsonga will not fear all very good about this.

:37:00.:37:08.

-- will not feel very good. Definitely a battle won. Break

:37:09.:37:14.

points saved in the long game. Two doubles, to lose server.

:37:15.:37:17.

Disappointing. This could have eased the pain but now it has intensified

:37:18.:37:26.

ever so slightly. The battle from behind.

:37:27.:38:34.

Murray slipping at the back of the court in the dry, dusty area there.

:38:35.:38:41.

The second time this game that this has happened. He just got

:38:42.:38:44.

wrong-footed, going back behind him. We know of Murray's defensive skills

:38:45.:39:30.

but he has not really been able to unload or unleash yet. Not in the

:39:31.:39:36.

way we are used to. Nice to see the way Jo plays the game sometimes.

:39:37.:39:52.

UMPIRE: You balls, please. Murray into the second week of the

:39:53.:40:03.

Championships here. The first week was so much about the rain. But if

:40:04.:40:06.

you are lucky enough to come along to Wimbledon. If you want to look at

:40:07.:40:14.

the juniors doing their thing, the tennis foundation wheelchair tennis

:40:15.:40:20.

programme has a lot of tennis. Wheelchair tennis, you think it is

:40:21.:40:25.

wheelchair tennis but it is tennis and it happens to be in wheelchairs

:40:26.:40:30.

which makes it all the more congregated. Brilliant. And hello

:40:31.:40:36.

everybody out there. Hopefully enjoying this British performance

:40:37.:40:42.

against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Everybody is certainly enjoying

:40:43.:40:49.

watching Tsonga. You are talking about the folks on Henman Hill? You

:40:50.:40:56.

are too busy now, a superstar coach. I have a question for Lleyton,

:40:57.:41:02.

because you were a great return. Is it fair to say that you preferred a

:41:03.:41:07.

target? I didn't. But it was natural. Like Sampras or Ivanisevic

:41:08.:41:15.

Rusedski, those servers were serve and volley Inc. It seems that so

:41:16.:41:24.

many guys do that these days. I think the change-up is the biggest

:41:25.:41:27.

thing, just so they don't know exactly what is coming.

:41:28.:41:48.

Continuing to cause problems at the net. It is difficult for players who

:41:49.:41:54.

already have enough to deal with playing him. What he is capable of,

:41:55.:41:59.

he's going to be incredibly hard to beat.

:42:00.:42:25.

Interesting to see how he will handle this, the first time in his

:42:26.:42:30.

career that he's been in the second week of a Grand Slam. He has waited

:42:31.:42:33.

a long time for that. That is a heavy forehand from a low

:42:34.:43:14.

ball. Almost discouraging Tsonga. This was a great sliced backhand

:43:15.:43:18.

here. He kept it so low, just over the net that you could see the heady

:43:19.:43:23.

top from Andy Murray. He got down so well to it. The groundsman will be

:43:24.:43:28.

looking at that and thinking, ugh. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, being

:43:29.:44:11.

aggressive. It is a lot harder than he made it work. That was a great

:44:12.:44:19.

pass primary. And that is what will scare Tsonga. -- a great pass by

:44:20.:44:21.

Murray. An ideal point up until then. A well

:44:22.:44:42.

directed forehand. Another error on the forehand side.

:44:43.:45:16.

Not only did he get there and make the pass, but a break and it was a

:45:17.:45:24.

single hander. A glancing blow. And we're back on terms and Murray is

:45:25.:45:31.

having a bit of a ramp. You can understand his frustration. -- a bit

:45:32.:45:35.

of a rant. There was a time in his career where he really started to go

:45:36.:45:40.

for the one hand are quite often. A lovely glancing blow. -- the one

:45:41.:45:50.

hand. Most guys with a double handed backhand would have tried to chip

:45:51.:45:55.

that ball across in front of him but he tried the top spin, which ran

:45:56.:46:02.

away from him. If you can give it a chance to get back.

:46:03.:46:16.

He got burned early in the set with that lobby. It was not going to

:46:17.:46:19.

happen again. -- with that glob. Murray, slightly taller but Tsonga

:46:20.:46:50.

is a powerful guy. He is getting some serves into the 130s.

:46:51.:47:03.

This is the perfect game by Tsonga so far. After breaking straight

:47:04.:48:33.

back, to try to quickly hold here and put the pressure back on Andy

:48:34.:48:37.

Murray, serving to stay in the centre. -- stay in the set.

:48:38.:49:57.

Tsonga is completely charged up for this one and why not? Three straight

:49:58.:50:03.

games including a break of serve and two holds. He is now one ahead. 104

:50:04.:50:11.

wins in these Grand Slam championships, Grand Slam or majors.

:50:12.:50:20.

The Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the last French champion at

:50:21.:50:25.

Wimbledon. Petra, a prisoner of war, the won the first championship after

:50:26.:50:34.

the war. The first man to wear long trousers in a Wimbledon final in

:50:35.:50:38.

1946. I would have loved to have seen you wearing trousers like that.

:50:39.:50:44.

Yours were quite long anyway, Lleyton? They changed around my

:50:45.:50:48.

time. Tsonga has come right back into this. Is that surprised you? It

:50:49.:50:55.

has. There was a lapse of concentration by Andy. And Jo's

:50:56.:50:59.

energy looks great. Very positive going to the chair. Andy is going to

:51:00.:51:03.

have to dig deep to stay in this set. I saw his energy remain

:51:04.:51:13.

positive in that long fifth set. He was feeling good about himself. He

:51:14.:51:22.

used to come out well. He was not particularly hot at the start, that

:51:23.:51:26.

was obvious, but no Murray has been struggling. He needs to tap into

:51:27.:51:32.

that. There are some nervous people here on Centre Court.

:51:33.:52:29.

Not as comfortable as he normally is on the baseline. An opportunity for

:52:30.:52:38.

Murray to take it to Tsonga here. To find his rhythm again. He needs to

:52:39.:52:44.

start penetrating, hitting the ball flat with that forehand.

:52:45.:53:14.

Good positive self talk by there to Andy. He has not been in that

:53:15.:53:22.

situation throughout this championships so far. Fighting to

:53:23.:53:25.

stay in a set. He has been very comfortable in all his wins.

:53:26.:53:45.

Liam Broady, the British wild card in the first round, Jensen Lu, and

:53:46.:53:50.

Nick Kyrgios. -- Yen-Hsun Lu. Tsonga here is

:53:51.:54:13.

people saying that his backhand is his weaker side, and it is. He is

:54:14.:54:18.

expecting approaches to come that way.

:54:19.:54:45.

This is one of the problems of being as good as he is, people don't

:54:46.:54:50.

expect him, the favourite of the tournament, to make his way through.

:54:51.:54:56.

After what happened with that amazing Federer comeback. He looks a

:54:57.:55:05.

bit fatigued. Murray, trying to energise the audience and get them

:55:06.:55:07.

behind him. Settling down nicely in this first

:55:08.:55:33.

set, trying to get a lead. You feel like it is such an

:55:34.:55:44.

important set as well, because Tsonga has not had much success

:55:45.:55:48.

against Murray in the past, playing against a big crowd here as well.

:55:49.:57:00.

It looked like he was in a good position to hit that volley. 136mph

:57:01.:57:08.

first serve. That was the return. A little bit of good fortune. Never

:57:09.:57:17.

let the ball go that you could have a pretty easy hit that on an open

:57:18.:57:19.

court. This is heavy, heavy serving. It is

:57:20.:57:38.

not just about milage, it is muscle, the raw way the ball reacts on the

:57:39.:57:43.

surface. No shortage of muscle from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Spinning away

:57:44.:57:44.

from Murray there. Tsonga is tossing down some heat,

:57:45.:58:30.

blowing and off-speed curveball. And then the next serve will feel like

:58:31.:58:35.

it is coming at 150mph. It is such a heavy ball. I looked at some

:58:36.:58:40.

statistics before the match. I guess Lendl and Murray will have done

:58:41.:58:44.

their homework but Tsonga's serve placement, this is his first serve.

:58:45.:58:51.

You know what, sometimes you put your best effort in... But it is the

:58:52.:58:56.

big points, and it is about the patterns of serving. Even if you

:58:57.:59:02.

pick that up, you are not getting your play. But he mixed that up

:59:03.:59:07.

well. As John said, he served baked, sliding out wide to get the ace,

:59:08.:59:12.

then he went wide of the outside at 134, and normally you will pick up

:59:13.:59:17.

slower, instead of going down the tee. His serving has got better as

:59:18.:59:23.

the set has gone on. Just one lapse, hitting two double faults. Any

:59:24.:59:27.

disadvantage for Murray that Tsonga has gone the distance, coming back

:59:28.:59:31.

from two sets against Isner? Murray has not been pushed that far so far

:59:32.:59:35.

in this tournament. He has been pushed plenty of times this year. I

:59:36.:59:42.

don't think that is a factor. He knew he was in for a tough one. He

:59:43.:59:46.

had top matches at Queen's. He went past both of you come up

:59:47.:59:58.

with five titles. He certainly did! He went past me with number one!

:59:59.:00:14.

He has not been that involved so far in this set so this is a really

:00:15.:00:21.

critical set for Tsonga to win and take advantage of that. He hit the

:00:22.:00:33.

line and looked a little long. It seems to be an instantaneous

:00:34.:00:37.

challenge. Fergus Murphy is in the chair and he is quite a

:00:38.:00:40.

disciplinarian on the court. He is quite a stickler.

:00:41.:00:58.

Jo was a bit casual trying that chip lob. And the hitting that saliva

:00:59.:01:08.

second serve into the body and Jo not looking to get around and turn

:01:09.:01:14.

it into a forehand. -- slow second serve.

:01:15.:01:44.

Tie-break, it is. First time this Wimbledon for Andy Murray.

:01:45.:01:55.

UMPIRE: Both players have received one additional challenge.

:01:56.:02:34.

He is going for that top-spin lob now. So far denied the baseline. The

:02:35.:03:40.

chip comes in. It is a very tough shot to pull off.

:03:41.:04:07.

Jo had it on his racket. After hitting that the double faults to

:04:08.:04:15.

start this tie-break, he has looked to be very aggressive on the Andy

:04:16.:04:19.

Murray service points. Back on serve now.

:04:20.:04:42.

Murray just throws his head up and he says, you are joking! He has had

:04:43.:04:54.

one of the biggest and best backhands today.

:04:55.:05:13.

He will take those two. The pressure reverts to Murray now. He serves the

:05:14.:05:21.

next two points. A Muhammad Ali lookalike. God rest

:05:22.:06:15.

his soul. He is quite a character at times. I like to watch him. He seems

:06:16.:06:25.

to be enjoying himself out here today so far, but this set is far

:06:26.:06:32.

more important for him to win than it is for Murray. That was a brave

:06:33.:06:40.

second serve, Murray, going to the Tsonga forehand as well. 100 mph is

:06:41.:06:47.

pushing the envelope on second serves, Murray. We saw it earlier

:06:48.:06:52.

with Roger Federer going for big second serves at crucial moments.

:06:53.:06:53.

Courage. It is another moment of danger here

:06:54.:07:11.

for Britain's Andy Murray! Anything short to the Frenchman's should --

:07:12.:07:16.

forehand is getting the treatment. Fabulous! How is that for a poly is

:07:17.:07:53.

the mark -- a Boggy? Really tough shots. -- how is that for a volley?

:07:54.:08:22.

136 mph, the serve. Murray is like a goalkeeper stretching out.

:08:23.:08:33.

That guy is flying past most players on the tour but Andy Murray is so

:08:34.:08:41.

good and he makes you play that extra shot. Jo is going for a little

:08:42.:08:45.

too much on that forehand. Go on! What a point! One of the

:08:46.:09:35.

points of the tournament. It didn't go to Murray but you have to salute

:09:36.:09:43.

Tsonga. Wonderful, wonderful! I did not think he would win many of these

:09:44.:09:47.

rallies but what an amazing job here. He has got himself a couple of

:09:48.:09:54.

set points. What a return of serve the! And you

:09:55.:11:07.

know what? Credit Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he absolutely went for it.

:11:08.:11:13.

All these guys say you can't serve and volley. It is not your

:11:14.:11:22.

shoelaces. -- it is on your shoelaces! He chose to do it there!

:11:23.:11:39.

Set point up on his own serve, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a moment ago. 42

:11:40.:11:47.

points he served, only the second serve and volley, that was.

:11:48.:12:25.

He would like that back! He played a classic tape break in the Davis Cup

:12:26.:13:13.

tie at Queen's club last year, just after Wimbledon, Murray won it.

:13:14.:13:21.

Sue Barker: We are coming to the end of our transmission here, this match

:13:22.:13:25.

is on BBC Two right now. We have 20 seconds to go to see that Andy has

:13:26.:13:32.

served that ace and goes up 8-7 in this tie-break so switch over now to

:13:33.:13:35.

BBC Two where this match will continue. The other News of the day,

:13:36.:13:40.

Roger Federer made an amazing comeback on Centre Court from two

:13:41.:13:45.

sets down to beat the Marin Cilic so he goes through to the semifinal,

:13:46.:13:51.

but to join Murray and Tsonga on BBC Two right now.
