This is the national programme, now we are going to take you over to

:00:12.:00:19.

Wimbledon. COMMENTATOR: Present the trophy to a British winner.

:00:20.:00:32.

Brilliant! Oh, yes. That is perfect. Irresistible, majestic.

:00:33.:00:45.

Wimbledon champion again. Wimbledon, a place like no other in

:00:46.:00:51.

the sporting world. 140 years of history, 140 years of grass court

:00:52.:00:57.

tennis, 140 years of glorious memories. During that time

:00:58.:01:03.

generations have seen Legends born, champions made, heroes and heroines

:01:04.:01:07.

striving to win in their pursuit of greatness. 140 years is a long time,

:01:08.:01:14.

but Wimbledon is as relevant today as it was for the first

:01:15.:01:19.

Championships in 1877. To play and win here, even just to be here, it

:01:20.:01:25.

is a privilege. Yes, this place is special.

:01:26.:01:36.

I grew up dreaming and reading about Wimbledon my whole life. It was a

:01:37.:01:47.

family tradition. Wimbledon was sort of our Super Bowl.

:01:48.:01:51.

You could feel that traditional magical thing in those games.

:01:52.:01:55.

Walking through the gates, everything is so new. I was in awe

:01:56.:02:01.

of the whole place. It was just amazing. I immediately fell in love

:02:02.:02:07.

with it. This is just it! Love the court, the atmosphere of the place,

:02:08.:02:11.

the royalty in the box. It was different. You walk out on Centre

:02:12.:02:17.

Court to such a harsh before everybody explodes.

:02:18.:02:26.

UMPIRE: Choir please. This court definitely feels like

:02:27.:02:35.

home. Everything I have is because of this court.

:02:36.:02:38.

I will start again. It is not going to be easy. Thanks to everybody.

:02:39.:02:44.

It is great. Wimbledon is the Golden Globe you are aiming for. I came

:02:45.:02:49.

here for one reason only, to try to win Wimbledon. The waiting is over!

:02:50.:02:58.

It is like living in a dream world. It is a fairy tale. It is the most

:02:59.:03:04.

beautiful thing that can happen to you as a tennis player.

:03:05.:03:10.

Wimbledon in the words of so many great champions. What a proud

:03:11.:03:17.

history this clubhouse. The 2017 Championships are under way, the

:03:18.:03:20.

latest chapter in the greatest Grand Slam tennis tournament. To be

:03:21.:03:24.

crowned singles champion you must win seven matches over two weeks,

:03:25.:03:29.

with the pressure and expectation building with every round. We are

:03:30.:03:33.

ready across the BBC over the next two weeks to bring you a feast of

:03:34.:03:39.

live tennis on BBC One and BBC Two, the red button, the BBC Sport

:03:40.:03:44.

website and app and all social media outlets, including Twitter and

:03:45.:03:49.

Facebook. We want you to join the conversation using hashtag

:03:50.:03:52.

Wimbledon. Please let us know your thoughts.

:03:53.:03:57.

Hello and welcome to Wimbledon 2017, and to our studio, which has had a

:03:58.:04:07.

makeover, but it is always a privilege to be here with the BBC

:04:08.:04:11.

team to bring coverage of this famous tournament at the All-England

:04:12.:04:15.

lawn tennis club in south London. It is a special year for the BBC where

:04:16.:04:23.

we many anniversaries. 90 years since coverage on radio, eight years

:04:24.:04:27.

since television was broadcast and 50 years since colour television was

:04:28.:04:31.

broadcast from Centre Court. We will be looking back into the rich

:04:32.:04:34.

history of the tournament at hear from many great champions of the

:04:35.:04:39.

bars. What about the class of 2017? 15 Grand Slam winner 's, nine in

:04:40.:04:43.

action today. Andy Murray says he is fit and

:04:44.:04:53.

ready. The world number one begins the defence of his title on Centre

:04:54.:04:57.

Court against the unpredictable Alexander Bublik.

:04:58.:05:05.

Venus Williams made her debut in 1997, 20 years and five titles

:05:06.:05:10.

later, she is still among major contenders. She faces Elise Merton

:05:11.:05:14.

is in the first round. Fresh from winning a record tenth

:05:15.:05:18.

French Open, now he is after a Wimbledon hat-trick. He meets

:05:19.:05:23.

Australian John Millman. Jo Konta's great year means she is

:05:24.:05:28.

seeded six. Can she be the first British woman in 40 years to win a

:05:29.:05:36.

singles? Have first-round opponent is Hsieh Su-wei. Petra Kvitova house

:05:37.:05:40.

won the title twice but after a traumatic six months a third. A

:05:41.:05:47.

Wimbledon title would complete the brink of's ram -- Grand Slam set. He

:05:48.:05:57.

faces Medvedev. Heather Watson has slipped down the rankings but is

:05:58.:06:03.

back in form at the right time. She is on Court Number Two. Those are

:06:04.:06:11.

the matches we can look forward to and here is where you can see them.

:06:12.:06:15.

Andy Murray has started his campaign. We will go there shortly.

:06:16.:06:21.

Then Petra Kvitova and Wawrinka against Medvedev. That complete the

:06:22.:06:24.

line-up on Centre Court. Venus Williams is under way on Court

:06:25.:06:29.

Number One and then it is Rafael Nadal and Jo Konta. Let's hope she

:06:30.:06:33.

recovered from the horrendous back injury she sustained at Eastbourne.

:06:34.:06:38.

And Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is already through. Not to look forward to.

:06:39.:06:43.

Simona Halep is on and Heather Watson will be on late evening on

:06:44.:06:52.

Court Number Two. A very special visitor here this

:06:53.:06:57.

morning. The new patron of the All-England Club, her Royal Highness

:06:58.:07:00.

the Duchess of Cambridge, who said she wanted to come to meet players.

:07:01.:07:06.

Martina Navratilova is there, amongst others. And also meeting the

:07:07.:07:09.

ball boys and seeing behind-the-scenes and how the club

:07:10.:07:14.

works. The Duchess of Cambridge is the new patron, taking over from Her

:07:15.:07:17.

Majesty the Queen. That was earlier today. Although it

:07:18.:07:23.

is just coming up to 2pm, we have results to bring you. I mention

:07:24.:07:30.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through. This is how he finished it off against

:07:31.:07:34.

the British wild card Cameron Norrie, in his first Wimbledon. Up

:07:35.:07:39.

against a man in form, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rushing through his match.

:07:40.:07:43.

You will hear more from Cameron Norrie. He had a successful college

:07:44.:07:48.

career in America and we will hear more from him.

:07:49.:08:00.

The big shock of the day and sad news for this man, Nick Kyrgios. We

:08:01.:08:05.

knew he had a hip injury sustained at Queen's Club. He was two sets

:08:06.:08:10.

down against PSU 's Hubert and was forced to retire. -- against

:08:11.:08:15.

Herbert. Dustin Brown is through. This is the

:08:16.:08:26.

man who put out Rafael Nadal in 2015. One of the most charismatic

:08:27.:08:31.

players on the tour. Beating Joao Sousa. He goes through and will be

:08:32.:08:36.

rushing to Centre Court because he will face the winner of Andy Murray

:08:37.:08:40.

or Alexander Bublik. Disappointment for Laura Robson, who

:08:41.:08:45.

is fighting back after a wrist surgery she had in 2014. But she was

:08:46.:08:52.

up against the tall Brazilian with a big serve. The Brazilian was too

:08:53.:08:59.

good on Court number 18 today. And to update you on Court Number One.

:09:00.:09:05.

Venus Williams was leading 3-0 but Elise Merton 's has broken back and

:09:06.:09:10.

they have started in the tie-break with a mini-break for Venus. That

:09:11.:09:18.

matches on BBC Two. That will be on BBC Two shortly. And this match is

:09:19.:09:23.

on the red button. Simona Halep, she has a break of serve. That is the

:09:24.:09:31.

featured match on the red button. The French Open runner-up.

:09:32.:09:36.

We are heading to Centre Court. Henman Hill is always busy when it

:09:37.:09:45.

is an Andy Murray match and he came on as defending champion and this

:09:46.:09:49.

happened about 45 minutes ago, as Andy Murray made his way onto Centre

:09:50.:09:57.

Court. Sasha Bublik with the headphones. There were a lot of

:09:58.:10:03.

people in their seats. They wanted to be there to welcome back the

:10:04.:10:05.

defending champion. CHEERING

:10:06.:10:22.

That happened just about an hour ago.

:10:23.:10:30.

Andy Murray is in a hurry. Taking the first set 6-1 and a break up in

:10:31.:10:37.

the second. We can join this. The commentators on Centre Court Boris

:10:38.:10:37.

Becker and Andrew Castle. ANDREW CASTLE: As characteristic in

:10:38.:10:53.

this match, the exchanges in the forecourt have gone Murray's way. A

:10:54.:10:59.

shrug from Bublik. He is forced into playing another shot. A rally of 19

:11:00.:11:08.

shots, that one. No comparison will look favourable

:11:09.:11:28.

for the Jeunghun Wang, including in career records. 651 matches won for

:11:29.:11:36.

Andy Murray and just three for Bublik, who is new at this level.

:11:37.:11:43.

Two of those were top 20 wins. He is 20 years of age. He has a lot of

:11:44.:11:50.

firepower and has good technique. He has a lot going for him. The

:11:51.:11:57.

question will always be, can you put it together in one go?

:11:58.:12:18.

If you were the coach, coached Novak Djokovic to six titles. This sliced

:12:19.:12:34.

forehand, cometh the word? I would go mad. I would savour every

:12:35.:12:36.

forehand drop shot, pay me extra! The other area you would look at,

:12:37.:13:33.

Boris Becker, is the serve,. Not so much the first, he has a beautiful

:13:34.:13:38.

motion, powerful. The choice of second serve, really going for it,

:13:39.:13:48.

most times. The percentage just low. Three challenges under the Hawk-Eye

:13:49.:13:55.

system per set. If you are correct, you maintain that amount of

:13:56.:13:59.

challenges, if you are wrong, you lose one. And he was... Just. Look

:14:00.:14:16.

at Bublik. He goes down on one need. -- knee. He is a showman. Why not?

:14:17.:14:34.

I am looking for the rappers. There are supposed to be two rappers in

:14:35.:14:39.

the Bublik box. Two seats available, still. Maybe

:14:40.:14:51.

they are late. Rappers have long nights. Spot the rapper. Anybody?

:14:52.:15:07.

Do not tell me, another forehand sliced drop shot, at deuce. Maybe

:15:08.:15:21.

the rappers went to the wrong box. Come on, Bublik, we like Andy Murray

:15:22.:15:30.

play as defending champion, but we quite like this young man, as well.

:15:31.:15:34.

What will he do next? I do not think he knows.

:15:35.:16:25.

There is a little bit of good fortune in that, but even more of a

:16:26.:16:33.

superb touch. That was probably four centimetres further behind than he

:16:34.:16:36.

thought, Andy Murray, but it is gorgeous. I think he wanted to end

:16:37.:16:44.

the game and put his racket there. He has got the touch.

:16:45.:16:53.

Bublik seems to warm up on the server little bit. Much better. He

:16:54.:17:03.

is orchestrating the crowd now. One set and a break down!

:17:04.:17:25.

Sasha Bublik was described as interesting before the match by Andy

:17:26.:17:31.

Murray and that is right. 20 years of age, this is his debut. He lost

:17:32.:17:36.

in qualifying but got in because somebody pulled out. He got into the

:17:37.:17:40.

main draw and he is enjoying his time on the big stage. He has had a

:17:41.:17:45.

couple of wins which makes you take natives that he is part of the last

:17:46.:17:57.

year, 205 in the world. Right now, 135 in the world. He is climbing

:17:58.:18:03.

rapidly. And steadily improving. I like what I see. I do not know if

:18:04.:18:10.

Ivan agrees with that! Bublik is talented, and interesting character.

:18:11.:18:22.

Tennis needs characters. As long as the performance is the objective. He

:18:23.:18:30.

has certainly got style. The substance, presumably, will come at

:18:31.:18:38.

this level. Andy Murray's dad, up in the Royal box, dressed super-smart.

:18:39.:18:43.

The defending champion a set and a break.

:18:44.:19:16.

All of a sudden, he gets some of these. You get a different match.

:19:17.:19:26.

But this hit landed on the commentary box with a boom. The

:19:27.:19:34.

forehand looks effective. It is not a weak shot. Why would he go in with

:19:35.:19:36.

the slice? If we were ever worried about Andy

:19:37.:20:15.

Murray's hip, for me, that answered the question.

:20:16.:21:02.

UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:21:03.:21:18.

UMPIRE: Mr Bublik is challenging the call. The ball was called in. Andy

:21:19.:21:50.

Murray has not served an ace yet, which is unusual, almost an hour on

:21:51.:21:52.

Centre Court. Not by much. That was excellent

:21:53.:22:31.

footwork by Andy Murray. Lovely dexterity in the hands,

:22:32.:22:49.

especially on the backhand side. Andy Murray's box. They should be

:22:50.:23:41.

satisfied with their man, so far. Performing well under pressure.

:23:42.:24:00.

Andy Murray playing a player well outside the top 100 in the world. He

:24:01.:24:14.

has won 129 matches and lost zero against players like this at Grand

:24:15.:24:15.

Slams. Andy is number one in the world and

:24:16.:24:46.

we are back to the big four because Andy is followed by Novak, Rafa

:24:47.:24:49.

Nadal and Roger, all familiar names. That is easy power, and remember at

:24:50.:25:30.

the beginning of his career, where he was happy to soak up the

:25:31.:25:34.

pressure. When that changed, he started to produce his best tennis,

:25:35.:25:38.

taking the ball on inside the baseline. His hand eye coordination

:25:39.:25:52.

is remarkable. Against most of the big serve players he counterattacks

:25:53.:25:59.

and reacts beautifully. You were coaching Novak three years.

:26:00.:26:14.

You called that off in December. He has since said goodbye to the whole

:26:15.:26:18.

team, which was a strange move as far as many were concerned, but he

:26:19.:26:24.

has decided to do that. You coached against Andy Murray many times.

:26:25.:26:29.

Captivating matches. Did you talk to Novak a lot about Andy's game or

:26:30.:26:33.

focus on Novak's game was matter of course. But in the interests of

:26:34.:26:42.

sportsmanship I am not going to tell the world how I told Novak to play

:26:43.:26:45.

Andy Murray but we did have a good record. It is called preparing your

:26:46.:26:51.

player for the best of their abilities. And the media analysis,

:26:52.:26:57.

background checks, following your opponent through tournaments. Would

:26:58.:27:04.

have known with a hip injury, a couple of days before. Those are the

:27:05.:27:12.

did -- details that Ivan does, and Jamie does. A set and a break, Andy

:27:13.:27:22.

Murray. The first match on Centre Court this year.

:27:23.:27:47.

Well done. Another strong service game by Murray. OK, did Novak get

:27:48.:29:21.

nervous playing against Murray, or more against Federer, more against

:29:22.:29:26.

Rafa Nadal? You get nervous against everybody. Those players are human,

:29:27.:29:32.

especially the likes of Murray and Federer.

:29:33.:29:39.

UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:29:40.:29:43.

Absolutely normal. Another low percentage shot by

:29:44.:30:05.

Bublik. Behind the baseline, moving backwards.

:30:06.:30:33.

The big difference between the top players and others is they really

:30:34.:30:52.

have their game and every body adjusts to their game. Bublik and

:30:53.:31:04.

many others find it difficult. Andy Murray, the defending champion, will

:31:05.:31:05.

have to serve for the second set. Certainly an interesting contest.

:31:06.:31:21.

Murray is in for an interesting match. Never really out of third or

:31:22.:31:29.

fourth gear. His hip seems to be OK. He went through four rounds last

:31:30.:31:34.

year before losing a set to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. I run my back if

:31:35.:31:37.

you are injured would certainly help. On the left, his physical

:31:38.:31:43.

trainer, we'll know more than anyone what is going on. You want to go

:31:44.:31:49.

through the first week, if you are one of the favourites, as smooth and

:31:50.:31:55.

quick as possible. Eventually you have to challenge and go four, five

:31:56.:32:01.

sets. It happened to him last year. At this stage of the tournament, it

:32:02.:32:09.

would be more reasons why he wants to go through today very smoothly,

:32:10.:32:15.

just to give their hip more recovery time.

:32:16.:32:31.

Let's see if there are some fireworks at the beginning of this

:32:32.:32:36.

came from Bublik. Andy Murray serving for a two set lead. UMPIRE:

:32:37.:32:41.

Let, first service. Well, that was interesting for two

:32:42.:33:17.

reasons. He played the shortfall in and Murray probably did not think

:33:18.:33:21.

the ball was coming over. He gave up the ghost on the run forward. Maybe

:33:22.:33:28.

because he was surprised at the net call. I wonder if it was the injury.

:33:29.:33:41.

Oh, dear! A little bit worried now. A little bit.

:33:42.:34:11.

You receive. You give one of these talented youngsters a bit of a sniff

:34:12.:34:21.

and they love it. Just a 90 mile an hour serve, not particularly to the

:34:22.:34:27.

line. This is quite a tight game. Andy Murray with three break points,

:34:28.:34:32.

Bublik. Wow, some theatrical shrieks! That

:34:33.:35:37.

forehand error. Murray keeps it together.

:35:38.:36:04.

Bublik has had five break points but taken none of them. Three in this

:36:05.:36:21.

game in a row. It shows his excitement.

:36:22.:36:54.

Oh, wow! What a forehand! Again, the decibel volley from Bublik went up

:36:55.:37:07.

on his last forehand. Matched in complete silence by this piece of

:37:08.:37:15.

work cross-court. He does not miss many of them. At that moment,

:37:16.:37:23.

completely off the court. That is the sign of a champion.

:37:24.:37:49.

Five straight points. Andy Murray recovers from 0-40 down. He is two

:37:50.:37:58.

set up in defence of his Wimbledon championship at Wimbledon. SUE

:37:59.:38:06.

BARKER: So impressive. Andy Murray on his way. We will be right back

:38:07.:38:13.

with this one. Over on Court Number One, Venus Williams took the first

:38:14.:38:19.

set. She has broken twice in the second. She is in charge. That match

:38:20.:38:31.

over on BBC Two. This match is on Court Number Two. Our featured match

:38:32.:38:36.

on the red button. Simona Halep a set and two breaks of serve up. That

:38:37.:38:45.

match on Court Two. Over on Court three, Elina Svitolina in a tough

:38:46.:38:59.

match. She has taken the first set 7-5. A wonderful story for her

:39:00.:39:04.

opponent. She reached three Grand Slam doubles finals, gave up, went

:39:05.:39:12.

off to play cricket and is now playing tennis again. The number

:39:13.:39:17.

four seed has taken the opening set. You can see that on the red button

:39:18.:39:22.

and on the website. Keep up to date with all of those matches. Everyone

:39:23.:39:26.

enjoying the match on Centre Court. That is where we are heading right

:39:27.:39:28.

now. So, here we are, day one at

:39:29.:39:42.

Wimbledon. Just fantastic. 13 days of tennis. Just like the start of

:39:43.:39:46.

the fantastical as you have been looking forward to. I hope you

:39:47.:39:48.

enjoyed it, everybody. Andy Murray is looking to continue

:39:49.:40:07.

his momentum. Trying to get the early break in the third set.

:40:08.:40:22.

When he is walking like this, definitely not right.

:40:23.:40:47.

After Bublik missed that shot, he almost ran into the ball boy. A nice

:40:48.:41:08.

little low five, we call it. Number nine, I believe, double

:41:09.:41:30.

fault. Ten aces. Driving from mid-court, the forehand

:41:31.:42:54.

sliced drop shop playing a half-volley lob. What about the

:42:55.:43:06.

basics! Not bad today. -- not there today.

:43:07.:43:11.

The basics, on a break point commit you do not double fault. I am afraid

:43:12.:43:26.

he has. 11 double faults. Only two sets and one game played. Only his

:43:27.:43:34.

11th tour match. Certainly one to watch. We have seen a number of

:43:35.:43:46.

youngsters we have not seen before. Medvedev is one.

:43:47.:43:59.

And Zverev, your young countrymen. There is certainly a change in the

:44:00.:44:22.

air. Yes, Sasha Zverev. Probably the best in his group. The match will be

:44:23.:44:36.

called off now. The rain is coming down. The umpire will probably get

:44:37.:44:44.

the players just to stay where they are. I do not think the roof will be

:44:45.:44:54.

put across. If it does go across, it will be a lot quicker to commence

:44:55.:45:01.

playing. We have had some new LED lights installed which warm up very

:45:02.:45:09.

quickly. It will be a lot quicker operation. Probably about ten

:45:10.:45:14.

minutes or so. We do not anticipate this will take long. The referee is

:45:15.:45:22.

a former British Davis Cup player. He used to stand around the baseline

:45:23.:45:28.

like you cannot leave. He played with Jonathan Smith in the Davis

:45:29.:45:38.

Cup. We have seen so many difficult falls, including Jo Konta at

:45:39.:45:44.

Eastbourne. She fell on her middle spine. Her thoracic spine was hurt.

:45:45.:45:49.

I saw that and was really worried for a couple of minutes. She got up

:45:50.:45:56.

and have side effects the next day. Here come the team. Clearly they

:45:57.:46:01.

have got information that the next pulse of rain could be stronger than

:46:02.:46:13.

this. They have got to regain the momentum with this sheet and pull it

:46:14.:46:15.

over. That is the end of play just for the

:46:16.:46:32.

moment. Andy Murray after an hour and 21 minutes, a set and 1-0 up.

:46:33.:46:41.

Lots of double faults doing the damage for Bublik. He is

:46:42.:46:44.

entertaining but I do not think he has enough to win this one.

:46:45.:46:55.

Bad news that Nick Kyrgios was forced to pull out earlier on. The

:46:56.:47:07.

tournament has to do without him. Hip problems, it would seem, for

:47:08.:47:15.

Andy Murray. He is in control, the defending champion. Hopefully, more

:47:16.:47:16.

tennis soon. SUE BARKER: What a disappointment

:47:17.:47:30.

this is! Watching the weather forecast this morning there was no

:47:31.:47:34.

sign of rain. Everyone sits and waits. This is the scene on Centre

:47:35.:47:40.

Court. Everyone had linked under umbrellas. Outside, play is

:47:41.:47:49.

continuing on many of the courts. Court 14 is still playing. There

:47:50.:47:55.

they are. Play continuing. That suggests it is not very heavy but

:47:56.:48:00.

protecting Centre Court and Andy and Sasha have made their way back to

:48:01.:48:04.

the locker room. They do not seem to be too worried about the rain on the

:48:05.:48:09.

outside courts. Plenty happening. That is the scene at Wimbledon right

:48:10.:48:17.

now. So, while we wait for the players coming out on Centre Court

:48:18.:48:23.

but let's have a chat with Boris and Andy. It is interesting that they

:48:24.:48:30.

are playing outside, so, what is happening? Is it raining on Centre

:48:31.:48:36.

Court only? That cannot be right. Is that the situation? That is the

:48:37.:48:40.

situation. All the matches are on all of the outside courts. I do not

:48:41.:48:46.

think you have too long a weight, which is good. It is a big relief to

:48:47.:48:51.

all the Andy Murray fans that he is looking good. The beginning, he was

:48:52.:48:59.

a bit testy. He was not sure. Some of the quality of his play, he was

:49:00.:49:07.

more worried about his hip. He had opening break points on the serve of

:49:08.:49:11.

Andy Murray. Once the match got going and he was more confident with

:49:12.:49:16.

his movement, the Murray of old came back. He was up a break and we felt

:49:17.:49:24.

sorry for Bublik. Seemed like it was lost in translation. He started to

:49:25.:49:32.

regroup and play more consistent. A wonderful second set. The beginning

:49:33.:49:37.

of the third set, Bublik decided to hit a couple of double faults,

:49:38.:49:42.

especially on break point and that gave Andy Murray believed. For all

:49:43.:49:45.

Andy Murray fans out there, it is looking good. We were thinking, how

:49:46.:49:52.

many matches has Andy had in preparation for the budding? In the

:49:53.:49:57.

second set, facing the three break points to how well did he play! Once

:49:58.:50:03.

adrenaline flows injuries do not hurt so much was he has not had a

:50:04.:50:09.

lot of tennis. We thought he was playing himself into form in the

:50:10.:50:13.

French Open. Still world number one but had not won that match by his

:50:14.:50:17.

very high standards. One was asking about how much it took out of him

:50:18.:50:23.

winning five tournaments last year. He needed matches. Went to the

:50:24.:50:26.

semifinal of the French Open and we thought this sort of famine for him

:50:27.:50:34.

was over and then he lost to Jordan Thomson, who played great. He

:50:35.:50:39.

definitely does need matches. Stepping back onto Centre Court as

:50:40.:50:44.

defending champion, he is a man for this stage. If he can get two or

:50:45.:50:50.

three matches under his belt, he can play into form. Winning breeds

:50:51.:50:54.

confidence. You can strut your stuff when you have a few wins under your

:50:55.:51:02.

belt. Every player is different. Some players skipped altogether the

:51:03.:51:07.

grass court tournaments. Novak only played a late entry to Eastbourne.

:51:08.:51:13.

He ended up winning it. Every player has a different preparation. Andy

:51:14.:51:18.

Murray, he likes to play Queen's, win it, and come here as a strong

:51:19.:51:22.

favourite. That has changed this year. He has played so many matches

:51:23.:51:30.

in his life, so he never has a lack of matches. On the grass only one

:51:31.:51:35.

prior to the championship. He could not play any exhibitions because of

:51:36.:51:40.

the injury. There was a question of disbelief. He was not sure about it.

:51:41.:51:45.

As the match progressed, he gained in stature and quality. In the

:51:46.:51:53.

second set he started to play really good tennis. We will see some of

:51:54.:51:58.

that good tennis. We were also worried how well he would be moving

:51:59.:52:02.

back he was moving well in this match. He was moving well when he

:52:03.:52:08.

had to move well. It was almost a question of when he was forced into

:52:09.:52:14.

it, he moved well. Being on the court... You can probably see from

:52:15.:52:19.

where you are. Between points, it is a bit of a struggle. He obviously

:52:20.:52:26.

has a wonderful touch. When he pulled wide on that particular

:52:27.:52:31.

forehand, it was remarkable how quickly he reacted. Who knows what

:52:32.:52:37.

is going on? We do know he has had a couple of injections into the hip.

:52:38.:52:41.

The last thing you need with an injury is a break. You are off court

:52:42.:52:47.

and you call down. It is not easy to get yourself warmed up and back on

:52:48.:52:52.

court. That is the last thing you need. The body cools down. You have

:52:53.:52:58.

to warm up again, start all over again. If you have an injury scare,

:52:59.:53:07.

that is the last thing you want. He is a veteran. I am sure they will do

:53:08.:53:12.

everything to get him match fit. All his team must be saying, get through

:53:13.:53:17.

a few more games and have another day with the physio and the train

:53:18.:53:21.

and get yourself better for Wednesday. That is the plan. He

:53:22.:53:25.

wants to go through the first couple of matches without being pushed too

:53:26.:53:32.

hard. Obviously, opponents know about injuries. Everybody is online.

:53:33.:53:38.

Everybody reads the press. Nobody knows how bad it is. The key is, he

:53:39.:53:44.

needs to get through today quite smoothly and quickly, have a day to

:53:45.:53:47.

recover and then be ready for Wednesday. It is lovely looking at

:53:48.:53:54.

you both. What is happening on Centre Court? We are OK. It is a

:53:55.:54:00.

lovely little box in here. We thoroughly enjoy being in this

:54:01.:54:08.

office. It is so fantastic being back at Wimbledon and to have the

:54:09.:54:14.

view that we all have. It is fantastic. The grass is pristine and

:54:15.:54:20.

perfect. It is dressed up so beautifully. It is very tidy. The

:54:21.:54:26.

desk in front of you was very tidy. We knew you were coming. We do make

:54:27.:54:36.

sure things are just so for when Lady Sue turns up. On behalf of

:54:37.:54:47.

everybody watching, including myself, thank you so much making an

:54:48.:54:52.

effort. You will be back working in just a moment. We will hear more

:54:53.:54:57.

from Boris and Andy as soon as the players walk back on court. Play is

:54:58.:55:01.

continuing on other courts. We can just update you. Venus Williams won

:55:02.:55:08.

the first set and is a break of serve up. That match is over on BBC

:55:09.:55:18.

Two. Over on Court Two, the feature match on the red button. Simona

:55:19.:55:22.

Halep is racing through. She has just one. I really good

:55:23.:55:28.

start for the French Open runner up. Over on Court three, Elina

:55:29.:55:49.

Svitolina, the number four seed in the Championships. It is 2-2 up

:55:50.:55:58.

against Ash Barty from Australia. The number four seed a set up. That

:55:59.:56:02.

match also available on the BBC Sport website. The good news on

:56:03.:56:08.

Centre Court, Boris and Andy will be getting ready because the players

:56:09.:56:14.

are back out. They have not been out long so I am not sure

:56:15.:56:23.

let's rejoin Boris and Andy. The pimples on the bottom of the shoes

:56:24.:56:36.

help you stay upright on the grass. Andy Murray I believe will come

:56:37.:56:43.

straight out to serve. I think it is a minute and a half short of a warm

:56:44.:56:50.

up. Is that right? Straight in? Straight in, here we go. A set and a

:56:51.:56:57.

break or two sets and a break to Andy Murray has everyone settles

:56:58.:56:58.

down. The grass court is already very

:56:59.:57:14.

quick. That is without the rain. That was the most important point of

:57:15.:59:49.

the match so far. Some rain coming down quite hard now. The players are

:59:50.:00:05.

off. Here come the crew once again. Neal stubbly is the groundsman.

:00:06.:00:15.

Security of the ball boys and ball girls pushed into the concrete area.

:00:16.:00:20.

It always amuses me that the umpire has two stay up his chair. He is

:00:21.:00:29.

pushed at the right speed in the right to Richard. Another break and

:00:30.:00:32.

they have only been playing for a couple of minutes.

:00:33.:00:37.

The weather forecast was at precisely 2:30pm there would be a

:00:38.:00:47.

light shower for half an hour, and it rained at 2:31pm. The players go

:00:48.:00:56.

through some double doors. You saw Andy Murray disappearing through

:00:57.:01:03.

green double doors and into an antechamber. There are beautiful

:01:04.:01:08.

glass doors, nicely engraved, you go through those two and up the stairs,

:01:09.:01:12.

on the right, the left, normally the right, where the changing rooms are,

:01:13.:01:17.

around, through fire doors and the like and you get to the changing

:01:18.:01:22.

room. Everything close by. The Royal up there. You go past guests. Debra

:01:23.:01:31.

Jeavons, one of the top sports administrators is there, talking to

:01:32.:01:35.

the Duchess of Cambridge, who is a pretty good tennis player. I am

:01:36.:01:39.

fairly sure she beats her husband soundly every time they play. And

:01:40.:01:44.

had thought about trying to become a tennis player. I heard she is an

:01:45.:01:48.

avid player, playing a couple of times a week. This is great for the

:01:49.:01:54.

championship to have her. She is the patron of the All-England Tennis

:01:55.:01:59.

Club now, taking over from Her Majesty the Queen, who held the

:02:00.:02:06.

position 64 years, but I do not think any secret tennis was not the

:02:07.:02:08.

Queen's favourite sport. No doubt about Kate's desire to play and to

:02:09.:02:18.

watch the sport of tennis. She was reminiscing with Sue Barker that she

:02:19.:02:22.

once came to Wimbledon and was thoroughly embarrassed by her father

:02:23.:02:26.

when watching Pete Sampras and Tim Henman. Tim walked past and her

:02:27.:02:32.

father said, "Hello, Pete." And it was Tim! The true athletes. Herds of

:02:33.:02:43.

wildebeest majestically across the plains etc. Here they come in super

:02:44.:02:48.

slow motion and on HD. Magnificent stuff. Make an assessment of this

:02:49.:02:59.

young man Bublik. We talked about Sascha Zverev, one of the new

:03:00.:03:04.

generation of players. From what you have seen of Sasha Bublik so far,

:03:05.:03:08.

what do you think? I like the potential. I like his personality,

:03:09.:03:16.

he is not afraid, he is a showman, he plays to the crowd and has

:03:17.:03:23.

conversations with his opponent. They gave each other a high fives.

:03:24.:03:27.

When they crossed. The umpire has not seen that before. From the

:03:28.:03:36.

tennis point of view, I think he has talent and potential. Sometimes he

:03:37.:03:40.

chooses the wrong shot at the wrong time, but that will come with

:03:41.:03:45.

experience and many more matches. He has only played seven on the ATP

:03:46.:03:52.

Tour. He has power, he is tall, he has a good serve, has good ground

:03:53.:03:57.

strokes. Sometimes he does not know when to do what. Andy Murray seeded

:03:58.:04:01.

number one at Wimbledon the first time. The Australian Open this year

:04:02.:04:05.

was the first time he was seeded number one and he lost to Mischa

:04:06.:04:13.

Zverev, Sasha's older brother. He will play Dustin Brown of Germany in

:04:14.:04:18.

the second round. He knows how to play on a grass court, of course.

:04:19.:04:23.

Further on, Fabio Fognini, who has beaten him this year and in the top

:04:24.:04:29.

half of the draw, we are without Kyrgios. Lucas Pouille could be a

:04:30.:04:33.

factor. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is always a factor. You mentioned Shapovalov.

:04:34.:04:44.

Shapovalov. It took me a week to say that. He is the Wimbledon junior

:04:45.:04:50.

champion and a great lefty. Had a couple of good wins at Queen's. It

:04:51.:05:00.

could be exciting for Andy Murray. Nadal in the same half. Djokovic and

:05:01.:05:04.

Federer in the bottom half. A fascinating men's draw at Wimbledon.

:05:05.:05:10.

SUE BARKER: Very disappointing. Everybody looking at the weather app

:05:11.:05:17.

and mine says it should clear in six minutes. Sad scenes, seeing the

:05:18.:05:20.

covers at Wimbledon on the opening day. It certainly was not for cars.

:05:21.:05:27.

Hopefully play again soon but we can update you with results from earlier

:05:28.:05:33.

and Dustin Brown, he defeated Rafa Nadal in 2015. He came through his

:05:34.:05:38.

opening round against Susa in four sets and will face either Andy

:05:39.:05:46.

Murray or Bublik. A big crowd favourite, Dustin Brown. From one

:05:47.:05:51.

great entertainer to another, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He came through

:05:52.:05:56.

against Cameron Norrie, the British wildcard. Just too good for the

:05:57.:06:04.

Britain today. A former semifinalist here. I am sure we will hear more

:06:05.:06:12.

from Cameron Norrie, playing in his first Wimbledon today and hopefully

:06:13.:06:20.

enjoy the experience. A celebration for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Sad scenes

:06:21.:06:24.

on Court number three were of Nick Kyrgios. This when he was two sets

:06:25.:06:32.

to love down. He had the trainer on court. We knew he had a hip injury.

:06:33.:06:37.

He said it would not be good enough to try to win three sets which she

:06:38.:06:42.

would have to do against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Nick Kyrgios

:06:43.:06:47.

very upset, having to pull out of Wimbledon. Kei Nishikori was in a

:06:48.:06:55.

hurry in his match today, losing just four games.

:06:56.:07:03.

Madison Keys is three. She had a minor wrist surgery after the French

:07:04.:07:22.

Open to remove scar tissue and we wondered how she would get on. No

:07:23.:07:24.

sign of a problem with the wrist. Madison Keys loves the grass courts.

:07:25.:07:40.

Simona Halep loves the clay courts but today you would not know it.

:07:41.:07:42.

Very good on the grass. Simona Halep, who was a finalist at

:07:43.:07:56.

the French Open in the marvellous final against Ostapenko, she is

:07:57.:08:03.

three. We will keep an eye on the clouds and covers at Centre Court

:08:04.:08:06.

but it is the opening day and there are many ways to watch Wimbledon on

:08:07.:08:17.

the BBC. We have every crosscourt, forehand, drop shot and overhead

:08:18.:08:23.

smash covered on the BBC. You can watch action from 15 courts live and

:08:24.:08:31.

on the website, BBC iPlayer and app on your mobile, tablet, games

:08:32.:08:35.

console or connected TV. Press the red button on the TV remote control

:08:36.:08:37.

and you will get coverage to six additional courts.

:08:38.:08:47.

SUE BARKER: Bay waiting patiently on the hill. Rafael Nadal will be on

:08:48.:08:53.

Court Number One in just a moment. He comes in having won his tenth

:08:54.:09:00.

French Open. Here he is looking for his third Wimbledon title and Lee

:09:01.:09:06.

McKenzie caught up with him. Heading into Wimbledon, would you

:09:07.:09:09.

say it is the best physical shape you have been coming into this

:09:10.:09:16.

tournament for a while? For a while, probably yes. It is true I did not

:09:17.:09:22.

play on grass for a couple of years so that is always a challenge but I

:09:23.:09:26.

think I worked well during the whole week and let see if I am able to

:09:27.:09:34.

compete again. How long did it take you to get over your tenth title at

:09:35.:09:40.

Roland Garros? Maybe not physically, but emotionally. Not only Roland

:09:41.:09:44.

Garros that what had happened. All the place it had been intense.

:09:45.:09:53.

Winning ten tournaments. And the tournament in Madrid, at home. It

:09:54.:09:59.

was very special. I needed rest after and I needed to see why people

:10:00.:10:05.

and to stay relaxed. I would have loved to be playing at Queen's, but,

:10:06.:10:11.

it was a little bit too quick, the transition from clay to grass and

:10:12.:10:18.

for my body, I needed to start low on the grass again, which is what I

:10:19.:10:24.

did. I am sure you are sick of talking about the knees, but how

:10:25.:10:27.

much do you have to protect yourself to get through a tournament like

:10:28.:10:32.

Wimbledon, and do you do it by changing your game or

:10:33.:10:35.

rehabilitation? I cannot change much my style, but at the same time, I

:10:36.:10:46.

needs to be healthy. If I am not healthy, everything is more

:10:47.:10:50.

difficult. The experience of injuries in my career, I tell you,

:10:51.:10:55.

it is impossible to compete at the highest level if you have too many

:10:56.:11:00.

problems. Is this the kind of place, once you get through the first

:11:01.:11:04.

match, you can breathe a sigh of relief and assess where your mind

:11:05.:11:08.

is, how your body is feeling? From the beginning, it is not like

:11:09.:11:15.

another event, sometimes on clay, if I play normal, here, you do not know

:11:16.:11:25.

what will happen. It is important to be through the first two rounds,

:11:26.:11:33.

then anything can happen. Joining me in the studio is John Lowe eight.

:11:34.:11:38.

Rafael Nadal, how incredible was that achievement at the French Open?

:11:39.:11:42.

To win the same Grand Slam ten times? We'd never thought we would

:11:43.:11:51.

hear that. It is impossible! The way he won, it looked impossible for him

:11:52.:11:54.

to be beaten and you look at him and think he could win another two,

:11:55.:12:00.

three. Also the Australian Open he played brilliantly. Only because of

:12:01.:12:04.

Roger Federer, this majestic player, who put on the accelerator,

:12:05.:12:09.

otherwise he would have won the first two Grand Slams of the year.

:12:10.:12:14.

This is not his favourite surface, he does not trust it. He is not very

:12:15.:12:20.

comfortable but he has won it. He has the players in the first rounds

:12:21.:12:24.

who can cause problems and they seem to play the matches of their lives

:12:25.:12:28.

when they play him. But this year has been such a good year, maybe he

:12:29.:12:35.

thinks he can win it again. He seems in good shape physically. He seems

:12:36.:12:39.

well and he has played so well this year, I think he has a great shot

:12:40.:12:49.

here. He says he loves to get set for shots and on grass, the feet

:12:50.:12:52.

move a little bit and you can slip. If you are not confident in your

:12:53.:12:55.

stance it can affect you mentally? The first couple of rounds, as he

:12:56.:13:00.

said, if he can get through them, then we will see. There is something

:13:01.:13:06.

about him this year. I am not sure he had the belief he would get back

:13:07.:13:10.

to where he has and he has done it well and quickly and his camp seems

:13:11.:13:16.

confident. He has a good coaching setup with Carlos. I think he feels

:13:17.:13:20.

he can go all the way. He would not enter if he did not think he could

:13:21.:13:25.

win. Carla said he wanted him to be more aggressive and he has. He did

:13:26.:13:30.

not just win the French Open, he demolished them all. -- Carlos. He

:13:31.:13:41.

made it looked like a second-class field the way he took them apart. We

:13:42.:13:45.

will watch to see how he gets closer to the baseline on grass and see if

:13:46.:13:47.

he has the confidence of movement. He is serving well. His volley is

:13:48.:13:55.

good. His slice has improved on this surface. If he wins a couple of

:13:56.:13:59.

rounds, he will be dangerous. Rafa Nadal and Roger, they can have a few

:14:00.:14:04.

months out of the game and it almost does you good, they come back

:14:05.:14:10.

stronger. Federer, what he has done, he belongs on a different planet.

:14:11.:14:15.

Rafer is up there. These players, a couple of years ago, did we think

:14:16.:14:20.

they would be winning Grand Slams any more? Probably not. They are

:14:21.:14:25.

number one and two players so far this year on form. He will look at

:14:26.:14:30.

it and think, I have beaten everybody easily in the French, got

:14:31.:14:34.

one slam under my belt and almost got another. Nobody thinks I can win

:14:35.:14:40.

it. But he does, and that matters. When you look back 12 months ago,

:14:41.:14:47.

Novak Djokovic came here holding all four Grand Slam titles. He is the

:14:48.:14:52.

most extraordinary of the big four. I put Wawrinka in there, not on

:14:53.:14:57.

grass. He is the wildcard in the tournament. We do not know which

:14:58.:15:02.

Novak will turn up. He won Eastbourne, which was great, but his

:15:03.:15:07.

year has been spotty. Some of the things he says in the press, at

:15:08.:15:11.

Eastbourne, he said it is almost good I am not one of the favourites,

:15:12.:15:16.

and will take things slowly. I am thinking it does not sound like a

:15:17.:15:20.

Wimbledon winner. Maybe he is trying to take off the pressure, the great

:15:21.:15:25.

champions thrive on pressure. Maybe this will be the tournament to get

:15:26.:15:28.

it back but in one year, it is amazing it happened to Djokovic,

:15:29.:15:34.

because he looked unbeatable. It shows mentally how important that

:15:35.:15:37.

is. Everybody works on the physical side that the mental side is as

:15:38.:15:42.

important, and it is for Andy Murray. We saw at Queen's when he

:15:43.:15:49.

lost, he had no matches. Holdout of the exhibition matches but looking

:15:50.:15:53.

OK and getting the job on Centre Court done. We are concerned about

:15:54.:15:58.

Queen's. Not just the manner of his losing first round, he did that

:15:59.:16:01.

before and got to the final but it was the way he lost. His forehand, I

:16:02.:16:08.

have not seen it that bad in years. His shots were not penetrating. It

:16:09.:16:14.

was concerning. He has had injury problems. If he gets through the

:16:15.:16:18.

first couple of rounds, loves grass, his best surface, and once he gets

:16:19.:16:22.

here with the crowd supporting him, he will be a big threat. It looks

:16:23.:16:28.

like ground staff are coming on the outside courts and possibly taking

:16:29.:16:33.

off the covers. Looking around the crowds, there are no umbrellas up.

:16:34.:16:37.

The ground staff going on all of the courts. Certainly good signs we will

:16:38.:16:45.

get place soon. This is Centre Court. A hive of activity. They will

:16:46.:16:51.

be getting the cover off and, hopefully, they will get the players

:16:52.:16:55.

on. The roof is staying open. This is the scene at Wimbledon and we

:16:56.:16:59.

have so much tennis to look forward to. The British number one man is on

:17:00.:17:05.

Centre Court. Jo Konta will be on court later. The question

:17:06.:17:11.

surrounding Jo Konta is how she has recovered from the injury following

:17:12.:17:14.

the fall in Eastbourne. Russell went to ask.

:17:15.:17:23.

Good to see you here, looking fit and healthy, how are you feeling

:17:24.:17:30.

after that horrible fall? It was a little bit of a nasty fall.

:17:31.:17:37.

COMMENTATOR: Back did not look good. Watching it back it does not look

:17:38.:17:42.

good, but the initial trauma of it on the court was also magnified

:17:43.:17:46.

because of the shock of it and the way it felt when it happened and it

:17:47.:17:52.

affected me the following couple of days, hence I could not continue at

:17:53.:17:56.

Eastbourne but I am doing everything I can to recover well and making

:17:57.:18:06.

sure I am mentally prepared. You play Hsieh Su-wei in a first round,

:18:07.:18:12.

as you did in Roland Garros. It is exciting and another opportunity to

:18:13.:18:18.

play against her. She is capable. A Wimbledon champion in doubles and

:18:19.:18:21.

can play on grass and most importantly, I will be going in

:18:22.:18:26.

there preparing well and trying to stick closely to the game plan and

:18:27.:18:32.

most importantly enjoying being on court 11. Andy Murray said there are

:18:33.:18:35.

drawbacks about being at Wimbledon as a British player where there are

:18:36.:18:40.

cameras and fans around. Do you enjoy it? Do you find it a

:18:41.:18:46.

distraction? I think it is a good problem to have, a positive thing, I

:18:47.:18:50.

think. It is putting our sport on the map. And it is putting the

:18:51.:18:57.

women's side a little bit more. I think overall it is an exciting

:18:58.:19:02.

things. SUE BARKER: The women's game is so

:19:03.:19:13.

exciting at the moment and Jo Konta talking about her opponent, Hsieh

:19:14.:19:18.

Su-wei, not an easy match. A tricky player. Very tricky and not the draw

:19:19.:19:25.

she would've liked. When she says she is looking forward to being on

:19:26.:19:31.

Court One. She has to believe that, she has two embrace Wimbledon. There

:19:32.:19:34.

were comments she made a week ago when she was a bit abrasive with a

:19:35.:19:39.

reporter who asked a question he was entitled to and she got a bit

:19:40.:19:45.

agitated. That is OK, but you have to embrace the situation like Andy

:19:46.:19:50.

Murray does, like Tim Henman did. If you look at her drawer, 15 women can

:19:51.:19:55.

win this tournament. No one can say there is a clear favourite. If she

:19:56.:20:01.

plays the sort of game she can with her serve, movement and confidence

:20:02.:20:05.

she has, she can be a big threat, but she has to believe she can win

:20:06.:20:09.

it and she has to embrace the situation of being here with the

:20:10.:20:13.

pressure of being a British player. You said there could be 15 who could

:20:14.:20:19.

win it. We have done a brave thing, try to predict the last eight. There

:20:20.:20:25.

it is. We can look at it. This is what we think might happen. We might

:20:26.:20:30.

have to revisit this next Tuesday to see how far we go. Angelique Kerber

:20:31.:20:37.

has not really proven herself here. Jo Konta we have put through to meet

:20:38.:20:48.

Simona Halep. Very tricky. Hold on, where is Kvitova? This is not me,

:20:49.:20:52.

can I tell you! This is not my choice. This is on the seeding, it

:20:53.:21:03.

is not our projection. Kvitova would have to play Jo Konta. I am glad we

:21:04.:21:08.

cleared that up. I was thinking, what has happened here? Unlike the

:21:09.:21:14.

men, they go by the rankings. I am not sure Angelique Kerber would be

:21:15.:21:18.

number one seed and Simona Halep number two had they looked at the

:21:19.:21:22.

grass court play and what Kvitova has done, even though she has been

:21:23.:21:28.

out so long, after being stabbed by an intruder. What a fairy tale

:21:29.:21:34.

return. She said today in interviews that, or yesterday, people saying

:21:35.:21:38.

she is a slight favourite, she said, I am not, I have not played enough.

:21:39.:21:43.

I'm not sure. Winning the tournament a couple of weeks ago, and after the

:21:44.:21:49.

experience she had, everyday, every tournament is a bonus after what

:21:50.:21:53.

happened with her career almost ending and the shock of what

:21:54.:21:57.

happened in that dreadful day. She might go out and be more relaxed. I

:21:58.:22:03.

think she is a slight favourite. Venus Williams is floating around,

:22:04.:22:09.

as well, so many that, on a day, they could win this, if they focus

:22:10.:22:13.

and believe. Anybody could win from the pack. Jelena Ostapenko, the way

:22:14.:22:21.

she won the French Open. She was good at Eastbourne, beaten by Jo

:22:22.:22:26.

Konta, a great day for her, also beating Angelique Kerber on the same

:22:27.:22:30.

day, but you get the feeling Ostapenko could move up a gear from

:22:31.:22:35.

that and will be dangerous. I think so, and I do not think she will

:22:36.:22:39.

have, after people win their first Grand Slam, all the stuff that comes

:22:40.:22:44.

to them after and do not have time to recharge and they have another

:22:45.:22:48.

Grand Slam coming and take months to adjust to winning a Grand Slam, I

:22:49.:22:52.

don't think she is that type of person. She will go out there, see

:22:53.:22:58.

the ball, hit it, go for winners. She is dangerous and I think she

:22:59.:23:01.

will enjoy playing here and it would not surprise me if she won it. It is

:23:02.:23:07.

hilarious, you came in and said where did you win your first

:23:08.:23:12.

tournament? I won my first tournament at Roland Garros! She was

:23:13.:23:16.

a former junior champion and it is amazing how they come back and prove

:23:17.:23:22.

themselves again. They do, and we have the young Canadian in the

:23:23.:23:29.

men's. Shapovalov. He has lost. It was a difficult draw. We met him at

:23:30.:23:34.

Queen's and he is a superstar in the making. If he had got a break in the

:23:35.:23:39.

draw here... He has a game built for grass. I miss that. I was looking

:23:40.:23:46.

forward to seeing him. I think he will win a Grand Slam. Obviously not

:23:47.:23:52.

here. But I think he is going to. We have so many young talented players

:23:53.:23:58.

coming up and superstars at the top, but they will be nudging them and

:23:59.:24:02.

trying to knock them off the throne as soon as possible. It is exciting,

:24:03.:24:09.

the next-generation players. There are exciting players coming through.

:24:10.:24:16.

Men's and women's. I was at the qualifying, doing TV, and you watch

:24:17.:24:21.

the standard of play, and you go wow, they are coming up. Men and

:24:22.:24:28.

women. Everybody believes now. They are fearless, the younger players.

:24:29.:24:31.

They believe they can take on the big guns and beat them. There will

:24:32.:24:36.

be nervous superstars looking over their shoulders the next year or

:24:37.:24:41.

two, because they are coming. So many dangerous players in the draw.

:24:42.:24:45.

Tommy Haas has been given a wildcard, which is great, 39 years

:24:46.:24:54.

of age. He beat Federer in Germany. How dare he? The impossible, beating

:24:55.:25:02.

Roger Federer on grass. You look at how old the players are, no

:25:03.:25:06.

disrespect to Tommy, late 30s, no problem. They manage their careers

:25:07.:25:12.

well. They have the diet, physio, training methods are so good. They

:25:13.:25:17.

believe they can go on till their late 30s, no problem, and it is

:25:18.:25:22.

great to see the experience. We have the youth coming in and the veterans

:25:23.:25:28.

will not go away too easily. Exciting times. Exciting because the

:25:29.:25:32.

good news is the players are making their way back onto Centre Court.

:25:33.:25:38.

Back to Centre Court and, hopefully... There he is. Sasha

:25:39.:25:44.

Bublik. Hilarious. He did interviews with Andy and Roger. He is a

:25:45.:25:50.

character, a precocious talent. Andy getting the job done, two sets up.

:25:51.:25:57.

2-0 up. Not moving probably as freely as we would like to see, but

:25:58.:26:03.

it is great to see him out there. Impact is, he was hobbling around

:26:04.:26:08.

between hitting the ball and sitting at the changeover and look down at

:26:09.:26:13.

times and it was worrying. If he gets through this match, there is

:26:14.:26:17.

not much doubt of that, sneaks through his second, I am sure by

:26:18.:26:23.

then he will be ready to go, but not ideal preparation. They have a three

:26:24.:26:28.

minute warm up. I will talk about Andy in a moment but the other news

:26:29.:26:34.

today, Andre Agassi is here with Novak Djokovic. He has added Mario

:26:35.:26:47.

Andretti. -- Ancic. He did not want to work with Boris any more. Marian

:26:48.:26:52.

Vajda, who had been with him so long. And then brings in Andre

:26:53.:26:59.

Agassi and Ancic. You can understand the team working. Agassi got back

:27:00.:27:02.

from the doldrums and got mentally right. They look happy together,

:27:03.:27:09.

that is good. We talked about Novak. It is the mind. His game, in a year,

:27:10.:27:15.

has not suddenly disintegrated. His forehand and backhand are not

:27:16.:27:19.

different. He is missing wall, because mentally he has lost

:27:20.:27:24.

something, maybe that fight. The French Open, he went away so badly

:27:25.:27:30.

in the third set, but a year ago as champion he would not allow that to

:27:31.:27:34.

happen. They have a lot of work to do to get his mind right. It is the

:27:35.:27:40.

belief. His game does not suddenly go away. Whether it was winning the

:27:41.:27:45.

French, completing all four Grand Slams, or suddenly he relaxed, who

:27:46.:27:50.

knows the reason, but it looks like he has mentally taken months.

:27:51.:27:56.

Agassi, he will get into his head and tell him, come on, you were

:27:57.:28:02.

champion, let's get back. You are better than these players. Get his

:28:03.:28:06.

mind right. That is what they have hired him for, not to change his

:28:07.:28:12.

game. Novak went to play at Eastbourne and met his first Eagles.

:28:13.:28:15.

He thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Andy, all the British

:28:16.:28:20.

fans want to get him through the first round and give him time to

:28:21.:28:26.

give the hip a chance. As I spoke to Boris and Andrew Castle, it is not

:28:27.:28:30.

ideal to have breaks in the matches where you go off because injuries

:28:31.:28:38.

cool down and get worse. Absolutely. He has not had a situation like this

:28:39.:28:44.

a while where he has had injury problems. He will want to get

:28:45.:28:47.

through the match and do the treatment and see how his body

:28:48.:28:52.

recovers, if he gets through this match, tomorrow, to see where the

:28:53.:28:57.

hip is. It is not just the scoreline, which he is willing

:28:58.:29:02.

comfortable, it is the pressure and nervous energy. See how he recovers

:29:03.:29:08.

24 hours later. Hopefully he will be OK. He saved three break points in

:29:09.:29:13.

the second set, just raised the level of his play. We worried about

:29:14.:29:17.

the number of matches coming into this, but you'd never forget how to

:29:18.:29:22.

win the big points. He is such a great champion. This is

:29:23.:29:29.

his best surface. A champion like that, he has got his problems, but

:29:30.:29:33.

look at the chap on the other side, playing against Andy Murray, number

:29:34.:29:37.

one in the world, I have somehow to beat him. It is difficult. As long

:29:38.:29:42.

as he manages his own side of the court, which he is doing well, his

:29:43.:29:47.

attitude seems good today, he looks fine. He walks onto Centre Court, as

:29:48.:29:53.

he says, and it makes you want to blame. You

:29:54.:30:05.

do not need to find motivation. It is his home, where he has made his

:30:06.:30:09.

name. That is what he is feeling. There is even Lendl. I like when he

:30:10.:30:12.

wears his glasses because you do not know what he is thinking. -- Ivan

:30:13.:30:16.

Lendl. Looking at the victories here. He was crying, Ivan Lendl.

:30:17.:30:23.

There is such a strong bond between these two. Andy had lost a lot of

:30:24.:30:28.

Grand Slam finals before he hooked up with Lendl and psychologically it

:30:29.:30:32.

was the thing. We talk about the mental game and that is what was

:30:33.:30:37.

missing. Ivan Lendl had been the same way, losing in finals before he

:30:38.:30:43.

won the French against Jo. And he took it all in and when he won his

:30:44.:30:51.

first Grand Slam, since then he has won too. I think he is going to have

:30:52.:30:57.

a great Wimbledon. We can rejoin Boris Becker and Andrew Castle.

:30:58.:31:08.

So, we have had our second delay on Centre Court. The first one 15

:31:09.:31:18.

minutes and the second one half an hour or so.

:31:19.:32:02.

A double fault is not that crucial. Having said that, 12 in two sets is.

:32:03.:32:26.

That was better. 11 aces for bootleg. -- Bublik. The defending

:32:27.:32:44.

champion always comes out and plays the first match at one o'clock on

:32:45.:32:50.

Centre Court. It is a great honour. Boris Becker you have had the honour

:32:51.:32:55.

of doing that on three occasions. You beat your opponent pretty easily

:32:56.:33:05.

that time. I was looking at the record for defending champions. 2003

:33:06.:33:09.

was the last time the defending champion lost.

:33:10.:33:22.

Before that, Santana lost in 1967. That is not many. The defending

:33:23.:33:32.

champion in control of this one. 2-1 up in the third set.

:33:33.:34:06.

He was hitting his hip afterwards out of frustration.

:34:07.:34:41.

UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:34:42.:34:52.

It just caught the edge. Only his second ace of the match. A

:34:53.:35:05.

champion's I, that is what it is called, Mr Bublik. You will get

:35:06.:35:07.

there one day, hopefully. I believe it is Andy Murray's right

:35:08.:36:02.

hip that is bothering him. I wonder if he is bothered with his serve, I

:36:03.:36:12.

think he might be holding back with the explosiveness.

:36:13.:37:18.

We have statistics for a lot of things but the amount of Paula

:37:19.:37:28.

forehand drop shots we do not have. -- poor forehand drop shots. You

:37:29.:37:35.

must play it in with the exact perfect weight and spin. Bublik has

:37:36.:37:38.

not done that in this match. UMPIRE: Challenging the call. The

:37:39.:37:50.

ball was called in. Mr Bublik has two challenges

:37:51.:38:07.

remaining. The reaction of Andy Murray after

:38:08.:38:43.

that important ball. Wants to finish the match today quickly.

:38:44.:39:43.

Bublik Shaw has a big first serve. 13 aces. Make that 14.

:39:44.:40:00.

Andy Murray still in control of this match will do they have had two rain

:40:01.:40:07.

delays here. The first match on Centre Court in 2017. Roger Federer

:40:08.:40:15.

is many peoples favourite for this event and why not? He has won 157

:40:16.:40:24.

grass court matches in his career. In second place, the man in your

:40:25.:40:27.

picture, Andy Murray. Obviously, when Andy was 15, he went

:40:28.:40:47.

to Barcelona to learn his craft. I am told that grass is his best

:40:48.:40:55.

surface. It is his most successful one. He has won Wimbledon twice. Got

:40:56.:41:08.

an Olympic gold and one Queen's Club five times.

:41:09.:41:38.

It is a dangerous business coming in on the backhand side. Gives a chance

:41:39.:42:15.

to get back. Is it my eyesight or is the son

:42:16.:42:48.

sneaking through the clouds? Getting brighter.

:42:49.:43:21.

We spoke about the inconsistencies in the Bublik game. That was another

:43:22.:43:25.

example. He has done this before. You can

:43:26.:43:50.

tell. Certainly some concerns about Andy

:43:51.:44:02.

Murray and whether he could take to the court with his hip injury. We

:44:03.:44:08.

wondered if he was down on his service speed. We will illustrate

:44:09.:44:10.

that for you in a second. That was a lovely shot. Still the

:44:11.:44:45.

wrong shot to play. I am surprised Andy is still chasing these.

:44:46.:44:59.

34 unforced errors is a not. -- a lot.

:45:00.:45:33.

Do you think he spoke to his coach, his father, before hand? Saying, we

:45:34.:45:43.

will lay the ball in short but not so short it is a winner. There he is

:45:44.:45:56.

will stop every strategy as to be revised once the first set is over.

:45:57.:46:02.

If it was good, you keep it. If it was bad when you change it. Here we

:46:03.:46:10.

go. Andy married just making sure the ball had bounced twice before he

:46:11.:46:19.

touched the net, if he was going to touch the net. A lot of backspin on

:46:20.:46:28.

it. Bublik was going, did he touch the net? No. That is a devastating

:46:29.:46:40.

return. It did not look much but that was a 130 mile an hour serve

:46:41.:46:45.

and Murray knocked it back as if it were nothing. The game is virtually

:46:46.:46:53.

over. Is he down on his first serve speed a bit? Looking back to last

:46:54.:46:59.

year and the final where he lost to Milos Raonic. Into the second week

:47:00.:47:03.

and slightly warmer conditions with the adrenaline flowing. The average

:47:04.:47:12.

speed is 113 miles an hour. Only two and three quarters of a percent or

:47:13.:47:20.

so. I think we are onto something. The difference is not much but it

:47:21.:47:26.

adds up. Eventually, any opponent will read that and get them returned

:47:27.:47:33.

more often than not. And it was much first serve was always his weapon.

:47:34.:47:39.

It does make a difference. Relatively straightforward so far

:47:40.:47:58.

for Andy Murray, the defending champion. He serves for this match.

:47:59.:48:19.

Andy really feeling it now. He lets the arm there. A beautiful follow

:48:20.:48:25.

through on the ground strokes. UMPIRE: Mr Bublik is challenging the

:48:26.:49:07.

call. The ball was called in. He really went for the first match

:49:08.:49:19.

point. Two more to go. Mr Bublik is challenging the call.

:49:20.:50:30.

He knows that Andy Murray has won. Murray said this would be an

:50:31.:50:42.

interesting opponent. He certainly was. Not quite enough substance yet.

:50:43.:50:51.

Plenty of style from Andy Murray as he advances as defending champion.

:50:52.:50:58.

An hour and 44 minutes of play. Two lots of rain delay, one of half an

:50:59.:51:09.

hour, one of 45 minutes. He will be around for a while. Something in his

:51:10.:51:14.

game is well worth watching. Errors creeping in. The shots are an issue.

:51:15.:51:21.

We have seen enough from Andy Murray, knowing what he is capable

:51:22.:51:25.

of. What do you make of that performance? We were not sure at the

:51:26.:51:31.

beginning. We are much smarter now. I think he is fit enough. I think,

:51:32.:51:39.

as the match went on, mostly into the body, into his hip, excellent

:51:40.:51:50.

stuff. In her duties as patron of the all England lawn tennis club,

:51:51.:51:54.

she'll be here a lot I am sure over the next two weeks. She will have

:51:55.:51:58.

enjoyed that performance as Andy Murray makes his way. No doubt he

:51:59.:52:07.

will know that his second-round opponent is Dustin Brown of Germany.

:52:08.:52:11.

That would be an interesting contest. He has got some firepower.

:52:12.:52:18.

Two years ago he came through qualifying, one around and then beat

:52:19.:52:23.

SAR Nadal 6-4 in the fourth set. That is Dustin Brown, who is next

:52:24.:52:34.

for Andy Murray in the draw. Plenty more tennis here on Centre Court and

:52:35.:52:39.

around the grounds on day one of the Championships. Plenty of break point

:52:40.:52:51.

opportunities for Bublik. He has certainly enjoyed himself on the

:52:52.:52:56.

bigger stage. He did not take any of the break point. I think that was

:52:57.:53:00.

probably the most important game of the whole match. He was 15-40 down

:53:01.:53:13.

but Bublik did not convert. He took his first break points and went 3-1

:53:14.:53:24.

and never really looked back. Not a good percentage with the double

:53:25.:53:28.

faults. I like what I see with Bublik. He is talented and

:53:29.:53:34.

promising. Nice to see you again, Boris. We will catch up soon.

:53:35.:53:42.

Three-time champion Boris and two time champion Andy Murray trying to

:53:43.:53:47.

make it number three. Straightforward in the end, an hour

:53:48.:53:52.

and 44 minutes. Andy Murray is talking to Lee McKenzie.

:53:53.:53:59.

A relief for many to see you at Wimbledon and safely through the

:54:00.:54:05.

first round. How you feeling? Pretty good. In the last few days, I was

:54:06.:54:11.

feeling better each day. Getting on the match court is different. The

:54:12.:54:17.

intensity is higher. The adrenaline and stuff, it's sort of helps numb

:54:18.:54:23.

some pain that you have. I moved well today. Yes. I thought I did

:54:24.:54:32.

pretty well for the first match. It was three sets. I'm sure you were

:54:33.:54:37.

hoping for a quick outing. When you see the rain the last thing you want

:54:38.:54:45.

is another fault. I was not thinking too much about it. I felt pretty

:54:46.:54:51.

comfortable underfoot. Normally the court is a bit lush and can be

:54:52.:54:56.

slippery. I did not feel like I was losing my footing at all. With the

:54:57.:55:00.

rain it was good we stopped when we did. The Centre Court was able to

:55:01.:55:06.

try and we got the covers on pretty quick. Sasha Bublik is a real

:55:07.:55:11.

character with a lot of potential. Not often you see a mid-match fist

:55:12.:55:16.

pump between competitors. Some good rallies. I don't see that often. I

:55:17.:55:24.

was chatting to him in the rain delay before we went back out,

:55:25.:55:28.

chatting about Centre Court. We were talking a bit about the match as

:55:29.:55:33.

well, which is pretty rare. He is a bit of a character, different from a

:55:34.:55:38.

lot of the players. He tries different shots. I think the crowd

:55:39.:55:44.

enjoyed the way he plays. Also his personality. Such is the love of you

:55:45.:55:49.

at Wimbledon, the national press were even encouraging the British

:55:50.:55:53.

public to rub a photo of you yesterday to get their healing hands

:55:54.:55:58.

need to help you in your recovery. Before your match with Dustin Brown,

:55:59.:56:03.

what will your recovery be? Does the British public need to get involved

:56:04.:56:08.

in that? I will spend some time at my physio and get into the ice bath.

:56:09.:56:13.

Tomorrow I will have a light practice and work on a few things

:56:14.:56:18.

which could have been better. Dustin comes to the net a lot. Work on my

:56:19.:56:26.

passing shots and lobs and those sort of things. He is unorthodox but

:56:27.:56:31.

plays a bit more from the net than Sasha. The British public can stand

:56:32.:56:39.

down. We will be putting away those photos of Andy because it sounds

:56:40.:56:43.

like his physio has it under control. Obvious problem still with

:56:44.:56:47.

the hip injury. Was not moving as well as we have seen in the past.

:56:48.:56:52.

When you have an injury can write you need a quick match. He won

:56:53.:56:58.

against Sasha Bublik who I am sure we'll hear more from. Everyone

:56:59.:57:04.

delighted with the defending champion through to round two. The

:57:05.:57:08.

opening day of the Championships. After the two briefed -- brief rain

:57:09.:57:17.

delays, we are back out. A lot of big names still to come. We are

:57:18.:57:23.

obviously showing all the tennis on BBC One. There are many ways you can

:57:24.:57:31.

watch Wimbledon across the BBC. We have every crosscourt backhand, drop

:57:32.:57:39.

shot covered on the BBC. You can watch action from 15 courts live and

:57:40.:57:44.

uninterrupted on the website, I player and BBC Sport at your mobile,

:57:45.:57:48.

tablet, games console or connected TV. Press the red button and he will

:57:49.:57:55.

get coverage from up to six additional courts. -- you will get.

:57:56.:58:02.

Let's update you on a couple of matches before we go to number one

:58:03.:58:09.

Court. Elina Svitolina won the first set and she has just held serve in

:58:10.:58:16.

the second set and is 6-5 up against Ash Barty. That is on Court number

:58:17.:58:23.

three. On Court Two, Marin Cilic, another Grand Slam winner seeded

:58:24.:58:27.

seven, up against Philipp Kohlschreiber, who plays so well on

:58:28.:58:32.

the grass courts. Our featured match on the red button. We will keep you

:58:33.:58:37.

up to date with those matches as they progress. We're heading to

:58:38.:58:41.

number one Court. Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open for the tenth

:58:42.:58:48.

time, he is up against John Millman. It has not been great for Hsieh

:58:49.:58:59.

Su-wei at Wimbledon. He has not got past the fourth round since 2010.

:59:00.:59:06.

Zverev is ready and up against John Millman. -- Rafa at Wimbledon.

:59:07.:59:13.

John Millman has two options about his approach. He is playing the King

:59:14.:59:27.

of clay. He can think he will be better off.

:59:28.:59:33.

Or will he think of this is the moment of my life.

:59:34.:00:01.

That was a well constructive point. Ended up hitting the volley.

:00:02.:00:44.

2day the ball keeping lower couple of times a day that's why some

:00:45.:00:51.

people saying that can be vulnerable in the first week of Wimbledon. Very

:00:52.:00:52.

much so. When we sit here and try to work out

:00:53.:01:36.

how Millman can have an impact in this match, we struggle to see where

:01:37.:01:38.

the weapons are going to come from. A couple of errors on the forehand

:01:39.:02:02.

which Millman will not be happy about. We suspect he will have to be

:02:03.:02:14.

consumed by positive thoughts, and if that is to be so, it will be the

:02:15.:02:18.

figures about Rafa Nadal's recent defeats here at Wimbledon, 2012,

:02:19.:02:32.

2013, 2014 and 2015, losing to players below 100 in the world. So

:02:33.:02:40.

get your money on that China I hope he's been reading the same notes as

:02:41.:02:46.

you! But again, when you haven't got a big weapon to really put Nadal

:02:47.:02:50.

under pressure, you feel like you've got to find some rid of your own. --

:02:51.:03:00.

some rhythm. It is difficult to see how Millman can keep the points

:03:01.:03:01.

short. JOHN INVERDALE: Like a batsman off

:03:02.:03:44.

the mark, that will be a source of immense relief to Millman.

:03:45.:04:00.

TIM HENMAN: I think the relief for a batsman is getting a run on the

:04:01.:04:10.

board. The relief for Millman will be when he gets a game on the board.

:04:11.:04:21.

A deft volley and then a very positive one to win the point. We

:04:22.:04:39.

all know about Rafa's strength at the back of the court, but actually,

:04:40.:04:44.

he's dot good feel at the net. If he can finish a point at the net on

:04:45.:04:46.

grass, that's a positive sign. Pretty conclusive first couple of

:04:47.:05:27.

games from Rafa. I suppose more to the point, Millman is not actually

:05:28.:05:28.

in the match yet. To keep the cricketing analogy, Rafa

:05:29.:06:07.

reaches his half-century with this match. This is his 50th game, going

:06:08.:06:26.

back to 2003. There's quite a few self-inflicted wounds from Millman

:06:27.:06:32.

at the moment. He's played and missed a couple of times.

:06:33.:07:27.

After all his heroics in Paris, Rafa decided not to play at Queen's,

:07:28.:07:34.

having initially entered there. So he has not had any actual match

:07:35.:07:43.

practice on grass this year. This might be the perfect way to play

:07:44.:07:45.

himself in. Tremendous rally! The slice on the

:07:46.:08:55.

ball initially from Nadal, and then, Millman keeping the ball so low.

:08:56.:09:02.

Rhydian to defence from Millman, because Rafa Nadal absolutely

:09:03.:09:08.

crushed that shot into the corner. He did well to stay with it.

:09:09.:09:34.

Great hands. Not an easy shot here, but Rafa has got soft hands for a

:09:35.:09:51.

guy that's got so much power. You could see Millman's reaction

:09:52.:10:49.

after that point, a big fist pump this early in the match, I think he

:10:50.:10:52.

realises the importance of getting his side of the scoreboard is

:10:53.:11:03.

working. And that shot, we ought to say, from behind Nadal, that's the

:11:04.:11:07.

new Vista of number one court. And we probably should add, the

:11:08.:11:31.

ever-changing vista. I'm sure we will have time to discuss the

:11:32.:11:36.

current state of number one court, and where we're going in the next

:11:37.:11:40.

couple of years. Tim personally is managing the whole project! Easily!

:11:41.:11:50.

Great shot! Again, good use of the slice from

:11:51.:12:07.

Rafa, but Millman was able to find the outside of the line.

:12:08.:12:22.

And? Clock in the morning in Brisbane, or whatever time it is,

:12:23.:12:47.

they will be pleased, because their man is in the game. To talk about

:12:48.:12:53.

the weaknesses of Nadal is almost absurd, but if you do keep plugging

:12:54.:12:58.

away at his backhand, because he tries to run around it so much, is

:12:59.:13:01.

that do you think the main objective? It's certainly the wing

:13:02.:13:07.

you're going to attack, because his forehand is one of the great shot is

:13:08.:13:12.

in the history of tennis. If you look at Rafa, he is right-handed

:13:13.:13:17.

fundamentally in everything else he does. So playing that shot, as a

:13:18.:13:23.

lefty, your right hand plays an enormous part in the that's where he

:13:24.:13:28.

is strong. For me, his backhand has improved an awful lot in the last

:13:29.:13:31.

six months, he seems to be more aggressive, taking it earlier,

:13:32.:13:34.

looking to drive the backhand crosscourt to then open up his

:13:35.:13:40.

forehand. I don't necessarily say it's a weakness, but it's not as

:13:41.:13:43.

strong as his forehand. So, Rafa comes bounding out for this

:13:44.:13:57.

fourth game, his second service game of this match, and for the first

:13:58.:14:02.

time in this match, the sun is out on Court No. 1. And it feels even

:14:03.:14:10.

brighter as a consequence of all the roof work that's happening above us.

:14:11.:14:17.

It feels more like Roland Garros or US Open.

:14:18.:14:33.

Certainly, with the construction going on, and the roof almost taken

:14:34.:14:44.

off at this phase, it can be a bit windy. You can almost hear it on the

:14:45.:14:48.

microphones, the wind whistling around.

:14:49.:16:33.

Pretty fierce hitting off the forehand wing from Nadal there.

:16:34.:17:00.

Pretty straightforward hold for the Spaniard. Tim, most people watching,

:17:01.:17:14.

wherever they may be, might say, a tennis court is a tennis court. The

:17:15.:17:21.

dimensions are the same. Why is Nadal's game so suited to clay, and

:17:22.:17:25.

less suited to the other surfaces? Really, in a nutshell, way he hits

:17:26.:17:47.

the ball, technique which creates so much spin. On a clay court, got more

:17:48.:17:53.

time to motherboard has not come off the court so quickly, but it bounces

:17:54.:17:57.

higher, and he's able to generate so much racket head speed to make the

:17:58.:18:04.

ball jump off the court. When you're playing against that on a

:18:05.:18:06.

clay-court, because you don't always get even bounce, you are unable to

:18:07.:18:10.

take the ball so only. That means you have to play Schurrle further

:18:11.:18:15.

behind the baseline, and that opens up the angles, and when he can hit

:18:16.:18:20.

with so much spin, he can take you so far off the court, and it's the

:18:21.:18:24.

surface he was born and bred on, his movement is exceptional.

:18:25.:18:42.

And the reality is that that game style, when you hit the ball that

:18:43.:19:02.

aggressively, it's going to work on any surface.

:19:03.:20:13.

I think Millman would like us to blame that one on the wind, up 30-0

:20:14.:20:24.

on your serve early on in the match, it's so important that you don't

:20:25.:20:25.

make unforced errors. Well, a which variety of shots from

:20:26.:20:48.

Nadal, but Millman really the architect of his own downfall. And

:20:49.:20:58.

Rafa, in complete control. Millman did very well to hold his previous

:20:59.:21:04.

service game, when he was down 0-40. But there, up 30-0, we really needed

:21:05.:21:11.

to keep the aggressive, consistent play, a couple of unforced errors.

:21:12.:21:15.

We have seen a couple of drop-volley is from Nadal. It is a shot that he

:21:16.:21:22.

can use well on grass. Because he hits the ball so hard, your opponent

:21:23.:21:26.

can be pushed further and further behind the baseline. With this grass

:21:27.:21:33.

court still relatively new, a bit of moisture in the grass, the ball is

:21:34.:21:37.

not bouncing quite so high not as to change direction, it opens up the

:21:38.:21:40.

front of the court. Well, that's a splendid sight on the

:21:41.:21:52.

opening day of this year's Tampax. We are the court at the far end,

:21:53.:21:57.

which has an open roof at the moment, but it will look very

:21:58.:22:00.

different in a couple of years, when if we do get rain, we will be able

:22:01.:22:08.

to play on under this smart new roof of Court No. 1. But for the moment,

:22:09.:22:13.

it's not going to rain anyway. It's a waste of money!

:22:14.:22:45.

Rafa was really cross about that, you could see. But well played,

:22:46.:22:59.

Millman. And again, that's where you saw Rafa moving forward, it wasn't

:23:00.:23:03.

so easy to change direction, and that's definitely the case on the

:23:04.:23:08.

first couple of days. This court has not had any practice on, so it's at

:23:09.:23:12.

its most Millman. -- at its most lush. I was going to

:23:13.:23:37.

say to you at the change of ends - at what point, if you are in

:23:38.:23:42.

Millman's position, do you say, this set has gone, I will just have a

:23:43.:23:45.

swing now? But here he is now at 0-30 on Rafa's serve. Maybe that's

:23:46.:23:59.

what he did? I think, from Millman's point of view right now, he's got to

:24:00.:24:06.

fight 100% for every point. He's still trying to establish his game,

:24:07.:24:11.

find his rhythm. See if he can have an impact - in ANY area. We were

:24:12.:24:26.

saying it was Rafa's 50th match at Wimbledon - this is his 50th match

:24:27.:24:32.

of the year. And Millman, not even into double figures yet. So he is so

:24:33.:24:39.

lacking in match practice, it's not true, after a lengthy hip injury.

:24:40.:24:48.

And we were talking so much about Andy Murray's hip in the build-up to

:24:49.:24:54.

this year's tournament, but the hip injury is the scourge of the tennis

:24:55.:24:58.

player, as rotation and movement is so fundamental. I think it is also

:24:59.:25:03.

an injury which has become more common because the game is played

:25:04.:25:08.

more open stance, sliding, facing the net, putting much more stress on

:25:09.:25:09.

the hips and groin. Pretty average second serve here

:25:10.:25:24.

from Rafa, straight into the hit zone for the Millman forehand, but

:25:25.:25:28.

certainly, well executed. Is Rafa playing quite quickly, do

:25:29.:25:50.

you get that impression? Obviously, the time between points

:25:51.:26:25.

tends to extend when the pressure is on and the end of the match is

:26:26.:26:29.

getting close, but at the moment, Rafa seems to be a man in a hurry.

:26:30.:26:51.

And from nowhere, Millman has a break point.

:26:52.:27:31.

Playing against a lefty, you feel in the ad court, you've got to try and

:27:32.:27:39.

cover that one out wide. Well, a glimmer of hope there the

:27:40.:28:37.

Millman, but only a glimmer. And he now has two serve to stay in this

:28:38.:28:40.

opening set. There have been several unforced

:28:41.:29:40.

errors already in this match from Millman and a couple of double

:29:41.:29:43.

faults don't help his cause. Well, it was brilliantly worked all

:29:44.:30:23.

the way through from Nadal until that last shot. There was one sliced

:30:24.:30:29.

backhand there, and you can't imagine how many revolutions per

:30:30.:30:34.

second that ball was spinning at. We had the most magnificent view of it,

:30:35.:30:36.

and it was extraordinary. TIM HENMAN: Rafa is capable of

:30:37.:31:24.

putting so much spin on the ball both ways. As you say, on the slice,

:31:25.:31:30.

he really does cut underneath the ball to get that excessive backspin

:31:31.:31:32.

on it. That's the way to do it. Very

:31:33.:31:56.

emphatic opening set of Wimbledon 2017 from Rafael Nadal.

:31:57.:32:16.

SUE BARKER: This was out on Court 17. You can see that Denis Istomin

:32:17.:32:32.

looked as if he had injured himself. In the end he got the trainer on

:32:33.:32:40.

court and was forced to pull out. Donald Young was 2-1 up and a break

:32:41.:32:46.

of serve up, but Denis Istomin was forced to withdraw from the

:32:47.:32:48.

championships because of a knee injury. Donald Young will go through

:32:49.:32:54.

to face the winner of the game between Rafael Nadal and John

:32:55.:32:59.

Millman. Good news as on Centre court Andy Murray won his opener.

:33:00.:33:03.

There was also lots of talk about whether he would be able to play and

:33:04.:33:09.

how bad his hip injury was. But he got the job done in straight sets

:33:10.:33:13.

against the very talented and precocious Alexander Bublik. In the

:33:14.:33:25.

ladies Championships the five times winner Venus Williams seeded ten at

:33:26.:33:29.

these championships went through in straight sets against a very

:33:30.:33:35.

difficult opponent from Belgium. She was pushed in both sets, but she

:33:36.:33:41.

eventually triumphed in both sets, 7-6, 6-4. What a way to finish.

:33:42.:33:53.

Venus Williams round to around -- through to round two. Elina

:33:54.:33:56.

Svitolina came through against a very entertaining player, Ash Barty,

:33:57.:34:03.

winning in this second set tie-break. The tennis was absolutely

:34:04.:34:08.

superb from both players. That is what it means to the number four

:34:09.:34:14.

seed. She knew what a difficult opponent she faced today. Ash Barty

:34:15.:34:19.

had reached the final at Edgbaston. She is through in straight sets and

:34:20.:34:23.

her impressive year continues. Over on BBC Two on centre court Petra

:34:24.:34:29.

Kvitova is coming back from an horrific stabbing from an intruder

:34:30.:34:35.

in December. She only played at the French Open and at Edgbaston. She

:34:36.:34:44.

has broken back in the first set against Johanna Larsson. That match

:34:45.:34:51.

is on BBC Two. On Court number two is Marin Cilic. He has taken the

:34:52.:34:55.

first set from Philippe Kohlschreiber. He is very difficult

:34:56.:35:01.

to be on grass. That is also available on the red button. That is

:35:02.:35:06.

what is happening elsewhere. Back we go to court number one.

:35:07.:36:00.

What you know with John Millman is he is always going to try his best.

:36:01.:36:08.

He is a gutsy competitor and he gets the most out of his game.

:36:09.:36:32.

JOHN INVERDALE: Rafa is a colossus in the tennis world, the sporting

:36:33.:36:41.

world. It is hard to remember a time when he was not playing. The current

:36:42.:36:46.

crop of players, it is hard to imagine an era, it almost feels as

:36:47.:36:53.

if they must have played against Rod Labour because they have been around

:36:54.:36:58.

for so long. Rafa played his first Wimbledon 14 years ago in 2003 and

:36:59.:37:05.

Britain's Lee Childs gave him a hard match. Rafa was 11 years old, wasn't

:37:06.:37:11.

he?! He then lost to a tidy player in the

:37:12.:37:37.

third round. That was his first foray into Wimbledon. Federer is 35

:37:38.:37:46.

and Rafael Nadal is 31 and he is much more part of Andy Murray and

:37:47.:37:52.

Novak Djokovic's age. Roger Federer won that year when Rafael Nadal

:37:53.:37:55.

played for the first time. And here is another Aussie coming

:37:56.:38:12.

off second best at the moment, John Millman. When you reflect on the

:38:13.:38:28.

results of 2017 it feels like the clock has been turned back five

:38:29.:38:29.

years. You had that period of dominance with Federer and Nadal and

:38:30.:38:30.

then you moved to Djokovic and Murray getting through to the last

:38:31.:38:33.

three last year. But it is amazing how well those two have played and

:38:34.:38:37.

performed this year in the biggest events. Millman was talking to the

:38:38.:38:44.

umpire at the last change of ends about something. Someone has brought

:38:45.:38:56.

on an Elastoplast or whatever it might be. You are no at home if you

:38:57.:39:02.

play tennis. A blister on your racket hand is not helpful in a

:39:03.:39:07.

match. You get blisters in other places like your feet and you can

:39:08.:39:12.

take them. But in the palm of your hand with the sweat and the grip, it

:39:13.:39:17.

is very difficult to sustain, especially in the middle of a match.

:39:18.:39:25.

It would have been nice to see the hawk-eyed view there, but you

:39:26.:39:46.

smashed the TV before we started, John! Not in anger I hasten to add.

:39:47.:39:56.

As this is a public forum I would just like to correct that for the

:39:57.:40:07.

record. Broke it, not smashed it. Tim said, I cannot see the TV

:40:08.:40:11.

screen, could you move the stats screen in front of it. I said, of

:40:12.:40:18.

course, then I dropped it. That is what happened. It was fair enough

:40:19.:40:20.

what I said. John Millman would not mind a few

:40:21.:40:37.

more games like that. And more with the crowd. They want to see a

:40:38.:40:47.

contest and they also want to see a lot of Rafa. For a lot of people it

:40:48.:40:55.

is perhaps the one visit to Wimbledon, maybe ever, and they get

:40:56.:40:58.

to see one of the greatest players of all time and they do not want to

:40:59.:41:01.

see him here in an hour and a half. That was a great shot. You heard

:41:02.:41:35.

John Millman say too good. In fact he almost said Toogood before Nadal

:41:36.:41:37.

had hit it. Millman would like Nadal to miss a

:41:38.:42:46.

couple of more like that. Asus three and four of the match so

:42:47.:43:25.

far. We do not think about Rafael Nadal

:43:26.:43:52.

as a serve of Asus like we do with other people. In the league table,

:43:53.:44:03.

where does he say? On the serve a long way down. There are a whole

:44:04.:44:09.

host of people who would serve better, but it is about the one, two

:44:10.:44:14.

punch, especially being a left-hander. He is swinging it out

:44:15.:44:22.

wide to the right-hander and if they have got a two-handed backhand, that

:44:23.:44:25.

is where they are susceptible to the reach. He is serving 66% first

:44:26.:44:42.

serves, which is quite good. In this draw there are probably 20 or 30

:44:43.:44:49.

guys who serve better than him, but the combination of serve and first

:44:50.:44:56.

forehand is good. There is a lot of debate going on here. I am not quite

:44:57.:45:01.

sure what about. Rafa is having his say. Millman was looking bemused.

:45:02.:45:16.

The umpire's microphone is switched off so we cannot hear what is going

:45:17.:45:27.

on. Any guesses? I am wondering whether they forgot the ball change

:45:28.:45:38.

but I do not think they did. If they forgot the ball change, would it

:45:39.:45:42.

require a meeting of the UN like this? I wonder if he has got a

:45:43.:45:46.

blister that he has got some blood on the balls. A trainer came onto

:45:47.:45:58.

the court and then went off. And we are none the wiser. If we are

:45:59.:46:04.

brutally honest, we have not got a clue. But we will work on it. We

:46:05.:46:11.

will try and find the answer. There was a very polite meeting and then

:46:12.:46:17.

everyone ran off. Meanwhile, back at the game... Nadal is still talking

:46:18.:46:28.

about something. We are a ball person short at Rafa's end.

:46:29.:46:38.

Rafa will want his towel at both sides!

:46:39.:46:50.

So now the ball girl has gone to the other side, but Rafa did not ask for

:46:51.:46:55.

his towel. Perhaps not the most conclusive of

:46:56.:47:15.

volleys, but it did the job in the end. I am just hearing that one of

:47:16.:47:21.

the ball boys is being treated by a trainer at the side of the court,

:47:22.:47:26.

but I cannot tell you any more than that.

:47:27.:47:37.

Millman was utterly stranded there. Which way shall I go?

:47:38.:48:04.

Those ground shots that Millman hit there, is that the kind of position

:48:05.:48:37.

that you, for example, would have gone in behind? The reason why that

:48:38.:48:43.

was effective is because he got a defensive reply and he was hitting

:48:44.:48:44.

the short title on the baseline. When he gets pushed five or six feet

:48:45.:48:45.

behind the baseline, that is when he is going to be less effective. To

:48:46.:48:46.

take the ball early against Nadal is going to be very difficult.

:48:47.:49:32.

Oh, what a winner from a great angle from Millman and then Nadal was all

:49:33.:49:43.

over it! And just look how immaculately he plays this shot

:49:44.:49:44.

here. 4000 revolutions a minute that ball

:49:45.:49:59.

was going at. It was just brilliant. The ball boy

:50:00.:50:09.

is backed by the way. That must be a contender for the

:50:10.:50:38.

longest rally at Wimbledon so far I think.

:50:39.:50:49.

34 shots of quality hitting and to finish with a winner like that down

:50:50.:50:52.

the line, impressive science. He is vulnerable in the first week

:50:53.:51:19.

of some tournaments. At 0- 13 Millman might have fancied

:51:20.:52:25.

his chances. Against the big players games can

:52:26.:52:58.

just slip away from you very quickly. Especially on a grass court

:52:59.:53:02.

and only a half a chance. But you do feel that at any point

:53:03.:53:38.

once it has got into its rhythm, you have to play twice against Rafael

:53:39.:53:44.

Nadal. Millman hit some great points there, but Rafael Nadal was still

:53:45.:53:45.

able to stay in the rally. Well, did not see that coming. A

:53:46.:55:16.

grunting rally from the two of them. There are a posse of Aussie fans

:55:17.:55:23.

encouraged by that. And all credit to Millman. You can see by his body

:55:24.:55:27.

language that he is fighting for every point, every shot. And he got

:55:28.:55:33.

his reward. Some great hitting from the back of the court. It was Nadal

:55:34.:55:39.

who ended up making the unforced error here, wide on the break point.

:55:40.:55:50.

He was just about to say something bad, but mercifully we cut away to

:55:51.:56:00.

the Aussie posse. And back on serve and you are kind of neutral again

:56:01.:56:04.

now. But he has to hold serve at 3-3. That is when you perhaps start

:56:05.:56:17.

thinking, will this guy go away, please? For me that is one of the

:56:18.:56:29.

areas where Nadal is so impressive. The way that he is able to put

:56:30.:56:34.

things behind him. He plays every point as it comes and he does not

:56:35.:56:37.

get frustrated with what has gone on before. That ability to deal with

:56:38.:56:45.

adversity. At this stage in the tournament dear against break, that

:56:46.:56:51.

will not upset him. He is relentless on every point.

:56:52.:57:24.

That is just the kind of error he does not want at this stage. That is

:57:25.:57:32.

right, he has got to win the point somehow. He has hit the first serves

:57:33.:57:37.

and has got the short ball. He did not do enough with the approach. A

:57:38.:57:46.

missed return and suddenly you are thinking 40-0. He has to work hard.

:57:47.:57:55.

It is those small margins that mount up between the two players. Do you

:57:56.:57:59.

think of it in those terms? Because now we are back at 30-30.

:58:00.:58:15.

Players always talk about playing every point. There is the scoreboard

:58:16.:58:22.

pressure and those first two point of every game I very important and

:58:23.:58:26.

you have an opportunity to dominate the point. He would have felt he

:58:27.:58:29.

should have won the second point in this game. The second serve and

:58:30.:58:35.

30-30 is a different complexion. And suddenly it exactly the scenario

:58:36.:59:00.

that you are describing. Leyton Hewitt on the right and Jason

:59:01.:59:01.

Stoltenberg on the left. Well, Millman bangs the ball into

:59:02.:59:21.

the ground. That was a game he felt he should have won. As it is Nadal

:59:22.:59:37.

is very much in control now. Is Leyton Hewitt still the Aussie Davis

:59:38.:59:39.

Cup captain? He certainly is. He has a semifinal tie coming up. Nick

:59:40.:59:48.

Kyrgios pulling out today. He would not have been pleased to see that.

:59:49.:00:38.

I'm sure Millman, when he hit that backhand, thought, that's a good

:00:39.:00:52.

shot. And then when it came back maybe not such a good shot after

:00:53.:00:58.

all! When the scoreboard is like this, you get the chance to try

:00:59.:01:03.

these shots, and when it comes off like that, it increases your

:01:04.:01:07.

confidence - if that's possible, in Rafa's case.

:01:08.:01:27.

Oh, the angle of that! We talked about the angles that Nadal is able

:01:28.:01:43.

to get on a clay court. On a grass court, that's pretty impressive.

:01:44.:02:30.

Well, he won't he is thinking about it yet, but he could possibly afford

:02:31.:02:38.

just a moment figures into the future, and wonder about playing

:02:39.:02:41.

either Donald John MacKay or Denis Istomin in the next round. In the

:02:42.:02:48.

quarterfinals, it could be Marin Cilic, who was the favourite before

:02:49.:03:00.

the tournament started. This man in your picture is striking the ball...

:03:01.:03:04.

For a guy who hasn't played a proper match on grass this year, he'll be

:03:05.:03:08.

pretty happy with the way things are going at the moment.

:03:09.:03:11.

TIM HENMAN: Very much so. You touched upon some of the results

:03:12.:03:15.

Rafa has had here in the last three or four years, and he's come unstuck

:03:16.:03:21.

against some tricky players - Lukas Rosol, Dustin Brown, Steve Darcis,

:03:22.:03:26.

real shot makers. But today against Millman, it gives in the opportunity

:03:27.:03:30.

to get that with, and with the confidence of his results in the

:03:31.:03:34.

past six months, he will feel very good at this stage of where his game

:03:35.:03:37.

is at. JOHN INVERDALE: Uncle Toni on the

:03:38.:03:43.

left there. We talk about him all the time in the context of Rafa. At

:03:44.:03:47.

a time when Djokovic is now linking up with Agassi, and we keep talking

:03:48.:03:57.

about the relationship between the top players and their backroom

:03:58.:04:00.

staff, that continuity has been a key element in Nadal's success. It

:04:01.:04:08.

certainly has, and it's horses for courses. Some people like that

:04:09.:04:12.

continuity - I worked with just three coaches in my professional

:04:13.:04:16.

career. I think the continuity with Uncle Toni is going to continue.

:04:17.:04:23.

Carlos Moya coming on board, starting at the beginning of the

:04:24.:04:28.

year, and there is probably nobody outside the team who knows Nadal's

:04:29.:04:33.

game better than Carlos Moya. Both brought up in Majorca, activist many

:04:34.:04:37.

times when Carlos Moya was a professional player. -- practised

:04:38.:04:42.

many times. Well, Millman was a bit of a sitting

:04:43.:05:03.

duck there. But you've still got to make the shot. It was a great pass

:05:04.:05:08.

from Nadal, but Millman again had the opportunity with the approach

:05:09.:05:10.

shot - just not quite doing enough. UMPIRE: Game, Millman.

:05:11.:06:37.

JOHN INVERDALE: I'm not sure his body position was exactly right for

:06:38.:06:46.

that shot! And again, I think we're going to have to blame the swirling

:06:47.:06:55.

wind! Out on Court No. 1, without the total coverage of the roof.

:06:56.:07:01.

Well, he's made Rafa serve out this second set. And Millman has broken

:07:02.:07:10.

him once already this set. And he's wiped down in front of our

:07:11.:07:12.

commentary box, and he was slapping his thigh then, saying, come on!

:07:13.:08:16.

That was great hitting, until, after that pounding from Nadal, Millman...

:08:17.:08:37.

He's smiling. But he's secretly thinking, firstly, it could have

:08:38.:08:46.

been a lot worse. What are you supposed to do when Nadal is hitting

:08:47.:08:49.

it that well, from side to side to side to side? I think he will have

:08:50.:08:54.

been hoping the umpire might have counted him out!

:08:55.:09:51.

So, two set points for a presets to love lead. Rafael Nadal, king of

:09:52.:10:18.

clay, master of grass today. SUE BARKER: Rafa, very much in

:10:19.:10:22.

control of this match, losing just four games, following on from his

:10:23.:10:25.

impressive display at the French Open. We will be right back with

:10:26.:10:30.

this match in just a moment. On Centre Court earlier, the defending

:10:31.:10:34.

champion, Andy Murray, made a successful start to the defence of

:10:35.:10:46.

his title, defeating Alexander Bublik in a very entertaining match.

:10:47.:10:48.

Murray will have been delighted to get through that match in straight

:10:49.:10:54.

sets to give his hip injury a little bit more rest before he's back on

:10:55.:11:00.

court on Wednesday. And Vince Williams is also through, the number

:11:01.:11:09.

ten seed, out on Court No. 1, was up against a very tricky opponent,

:11:10.:11:11.

Elise Mertens of Belgium. And she was made to fight in both sets,

:11:12.:11:16.

coming through the first in a tie-break, winning the second 6-4.

:11:17.:11:22.

So, Venus Williams, semifinalist last year, is through.

:11:23.:11:34.

But the five-time champion is facing a wrongful death lawsuit following a

:11:35.:11:42.

car crash which she was involved in last month. After the match, she was

:11:43.:11:46.

asked in a press conference how she had been coping following the

:11:47.:11:49.

accident. Having gone through all the things you have, what mentally

:11:50.:11:55.

and physically effect it will have on you, when you're just trying to

:11:56.:12:00.

be a tennis player? Have no idea what tomorrow will bring, that's all

:12:01.:12:03.

I can say about it, that's what I've learned. I saw that you wrote on

:12:04.:12:10.

your Facebook some very heartfelt words about the - is there anything

:12:11.:12:16.

else that you would want to say about that? There are really no

:12:17.:12:22.

words to describe how devastating, and... Yeah, I'm completely

:12:23.:12:25.

speechless. I mean, I'm just... Before we take any further questions

:12:26.:12:52.

for Venus, I would ask you to respect her wishes on this. A very

:12:53.:12:59.

emotional Venus Williams, saying, devastated and heartbroken,

:13:00.:13:01.

following that car accident last month. Well, she will be back on

:13:02.:13:06.

court on Wednesday. Before we rejoin Rafael Nadal, I can take you around

:13:07.:13:10.

a few of the matches, starting on Centre Court. This match is

:13:11.:13:15.

currently on BBC Two, Petra Kvitova is a set and 3-2 up against her

:13:16.:13:22.

Swedish opponent. That is on Centre Court. Over on Court No. 3, Aljaz

:13:23.:13:30.

Bedene, in a first set tie-break against Ivo Karlovic. And it has

:13:31.:13:43.

gone the way of Karlovic. So, Aljaz Bedene up against it against the

:13:44.:13:51.

giant Croatian. And back we go no to Court No. 1, we've just missed one

:13:52.:13:53.

point. JOHN INVERDALE: That was a great

:13:54.:14:13.

shot. It just wasn't in! Oh! Well, you thought the lob was

:14:14.:15:22.

going to win it, but it wasn't quite hit well enough. Then you thought

:15:23.:15:26.

the smash would win it - and that was hit well enough. And then, that!

:15:27.:15:32.

That's good enough! You have just got to say, too good.

:15:33.:16:02.

TIM HENMAN: It seems that times that Rafa is returning the first serve

:16:03.:16:09.

better than the second. I know Rafa missed that, but the

:16:10.:16:26.

speed with which he got across the baseline to be in a position to hit

:16:27.:16:28.

that shot, it never ceases to amaze. That's ridiculous! That actually is

:16:29.:16:59.

ridiculous! You knew what he was going to do half a second before he

:17:00.:17:04.

hit it, but just look at this. The execution, this ball is coming

:17:05.:17:08.

pretty quick, and Nadal just chops across it. You can see when it

:17:09.:17:10.

bounces how much side spin is on it. Well, Nadal was goading Millman a

:17:11.:17:49.

bit there. So, we have a break point opportunity, right at the start of

:17:50.:17:51.

the set. An amazing array of stroke play from

:17:52.:18:32.

Nadal. And he's coasting out of the second round. -- coasting now to the

:18:33.:18:49.

second round. When we look at the Dell, where he is hitting his second

:18:50.:18:54.

shot in the rally, after the first serve he's really getting up onto

:18:55.:18:57.

the baseline, and then, when you see the width he's able to get with the

:18:58.:19:01.

forehand mainly, three quarters of his second shots of the rally with

:19:02.:19:07.

the forehand, and then he's able to go both ways. When you are trying to

:19:08.:19:20.

run down those shots, which are mainly forehands, you've got a lot

:19:21.:19:23.

of court to cover. Well, Millman has been here before,

:19:24.:21:10.

and Millman has shot the door emphatically on several previous

:21:11.:21:13.

occasions. Let's see what happens here.

:21:14.:21:19.

REFEREE: Warning, Mr Nadal. Well, it won't be the first that he gets at

:21:20.:21:21.

Wimbledon this year. And that's basically what Rafa

:21:22.:21:35.

thought of his time violation. And I think it was a correct call. Rafa

:21:36.:21:40.

had been trying to get a couple of extra balls from the ball kid, and

:21:41.:21:44.

generally taking a little bit too long between points. Just keep him

:21:45.:21:49.

on his toes, speed things up a little bit.

:21:50.:22:00.

Ace number five from Nadal. But it is so random, Tim? If we had a stop

:22:01.:22:11.

watch here, the variation in times between the points... That's almost

:22:12.:22:18.

brilliant. Good response again from 0-30. But

:22:19.:22:59.

you're only going to stop this when you put a shot clock at the back of

:23:00.:23:03.

the court, starts at 20 seconds, and counts down, and everybody knows

:23:04.:23:06.

where they are? That would make it much more easy to follow. And it

:23:07.:23:15.

would add to the drama. I'm not altogether against it, but I think

:23:16.:23:23.

it needs to be trialled. They're going to trial it in the American

:23:24.:23:29.

hard court season, but the problem is, it's going to be tested at a

:23:30.:23:33.

lower level, when you don't have the crowd watching. And I think one of

:23:34.:23:37.

the areas that will be difficult is when you've got a big crowd. Why

:23:38.:23:43.

does that make a difference? I think there can be crowd interference,

:23:44.:23:49.

when you've got a home player and a sort of enemy on the court, if you

:23:50.:23:59.

like. And also, I'm interested to see who will be policing it, because

:24:00.:24:03.

the umpire has got enough to manage as it is already. Well, it will

:24:04.:24:11.

almost be a fourth official, won't it, somebody in his ear telling him

:24:12.:24:18.

what's going on? When you say you're not altogether against it, does that

:24:19.:24:24.

mean you're not altogether in favour of it? I would definitely like to

:24:25.:24:32.

understand how it would work. For me, one thing that definitely needs

:24:33.:24:38.

to be changed is, 20 seconds in the slams is too quick. It's got to be

:24:39.:24:43.

consistent with the tour. 25 seconds is the right number for me in

:24:44.:24:47.

professional tennis - but it needs 25 seconds. Hawk-Eye's first

:24:48.:24:57.

involvement in this match, I think. Nadal doesn't seem to hope for,

:24:58.:24:59.

strolls to the other! Well, he's done it again. Millman

:25:00.:25:37.

had very few options once he got there anyway. Talk about Hawk-Eye,

:25:38.:25:44.

Hawk-Eye has been an absolutely fantastic addition to our sport,

:25:45.:25:49.

there's no doubt about it. Another area we can look at is when a match

:25:50.:25:53.

starts. Talk about a one o'clock match. Yeah, it was 12 minutes past

:25:54.:26:02.

before a ball was hit. I quite like it in other sports, Champions League

:26:03.:26:10.

final, or rugby international, when it says it is going to start at

:26:11.:26:16.

7.45, it starts at 7.45. That is not possible necessarily in all tennis

:26:17.:26:18.

matches unless it's the first match. Millman is challenging this one.

:26:19.:26:41.

Some lovely striking of the ball in that rally. We have had some really

:26:42.:26:46.

good rallies in this match, but Nadal has come off best in most of

:26:47.:26:54.

them. Unless you play the first match of the court, you don't know

:26:55.:26:55.

what time you're going to start. Get rid of the knock-up, John? In

:26:56.:27:27.

athletics, there is a warm up track. You warm up there, you come on here,

:27:28.:27:35.

you play. As there is in tennis. Millman throws the ball away in

:27:36.:27:46.

annoyance. You sense that he thinks it is all over now, with two breaks

:27:47.:27:54.

of serve. So, the tennis world, according to John Inverdale and Tim

:27:55.:27:57.

Henman, would get rid of the warm-up,, with five seconds with a

:27:58.:28:01.

shot clock. Yeah, and you also then enforce it. First time would be a

:28:02.:28:09.

warning, second time would be a point, third time is a game. Fourth

:28:10.:28:13.

time, you're thrown out of the tournament. Fifth time, you lose

:28:14.:28:20.

your passport! It's very simple! But the premise for doing all this is to

:28:21.:28:26.

make the game a better product for the widest possible constituency.

:28:27.:28:32.

That's where everyone's coming from, this is not some kind of Draconian

:28:33.:28:37.

penalties which people are seeking to impose just out of wilfulness.

:28:38.:28:42.

It's actually to make the product better. Absolutely. What about the

:28:43.:28:49.

break at the end of the set, when players popped off to have a change

:28:50.:28:58.

of clothing? Well, maybe you have to do that, but what you don't need to

:28:59.:29:03.

do is, in a tie-break, and at the end of the first game, to waste 30

:29:04.:29:08.

seconds having a glass of water. There are so many areas. Suddenly, a

:29:09.:29:24.

three and a half hour match becomes two hours 45 very quickly - and

:29:25.:29:27.

television would love that. And Rafa is definitely getting his

:29:28.:29:50.

skates on now. JOHN INVERDALE: Rafa at a rate of

:29:51.:32:05.

knots now. TIM HENMAN: You feel he is going through the gears, having

:32:06.:32:09.

had no grass court matches during this tournament. I think he will be

:32:10.:32:14.

happy with the way he has been able to go out and experiment with a few

:32:15.:32:15.

shots. Millman saw that one coming for

:32:16.:32:49.

once. I think Rafa got caught in five Mins there.

:32:50.:33:03.

One thing I have been impressed with with John Millman today is his

:33:04.:33:08.

attitude. He has never got down on himself. He has played hard for

:33:09.:33:14.

every point and every game that he has got on the scoreboard. It is not

:33:15.:33:20.

going to make any difference in the end result, but he has had the right

:33:21.:33:24.

attitude. Oh, it was in the hitting zone, but

:33:25.:33:44.

what a hit. It is quite easy when you don't care where it is going.

:33:45.:33:49.

Well played, John Millman. Talking about our debate about how

:33:50.:34:12.

long people are taking between points and how long each player is

:34:13.:34:23.

taking between points. It is an average of 23 seconds for Rafael

:34:24.:34:29.

Nadal. At the start of the game he was rushing and he was going from

:34:30.:34:40.

one side of the court to the other. Would you say that was fair enough?

:34:41.:34:45.

It is supposed to be 20 seconds. If the average is 23, is that fair

:34:46.:34:52.

enough? My honest answer is, yes, it is. But I think it is ludicrous in a

:34:53.:34:57.

grand slam that you are playing five sets and it has to be 20 seconds.

:34:58.:35:03.

The wording if it is a soft 20 seconds, but that does not make any

:35:04.:35:09.

sense either, you need clarity. If he is averaging 23, that is

:35:10.:35:14.

fantastic. The problem is when he starts averaging 28. That is when

:35:15.:35:19.

there will be a great area and the umpire will have to make judgment

:35:20.:35:26.

calls. The reason we are having this conversation is Rafa got a time

:35:27.:35:31.

violation. Uncle Toni is taking a selfie! I

:35:32.:36:08.

think he is looking up which restaurant to go to tonight.

:36:09.:36:19.

John Millman was not going to challenge that, but then his box

:36:20.:36:28.

told him to challenge it. They want this game to go on.

:36:29.:36:41.

That was not the greatest call from the Millman box.

:36:42.:37:34.

That was a great shot. And exhibition staff at the end.

:37:35.:37:54.

It might have been Millman's only chance if he had gone for the

:37:55.:37:58.

knockout! It is the right shot to be

:37:59.:38:25.

aggressive, going down the line, but he cannot afford to

:38:26.:38:44.

Rafa let that one go, thinking it was drifting wide, but it was not.

:38:45.:39:03.

I think it's just caught the back of the line. You are still in it, mate.

:39:04.:39:20.

I don't know if you could hear what he was saying there, Millman, but he

:39:21.:39:27.

was saying feet, feet. And Nadal's footwork there was

:39:28.:39:56.

perfect. Talk about staying on the Nadal backhand because you want to

:39:57.:39:59.

stay away from his forehand, but this is where he has really

:40:00.:40:04.

improved, flattening the ball out, good use of the right hand.

:40:05.:40:33.

I am not sure that is a great look. Oh!

:40:34.:41:09.

I should say as well that the gentleman who has got his hat

:41:10.:41:31.

halfway across his face, it is a really bright afternoon. The damage

:41:32.:41:38.

has been done. We had some rain earlier, but you are right.

:41:39.:41:51.

And the damage almost done here for John Millman. You kind of suspect

:41:52.:42:02.

that Nadal will be back in the locker room in ten minutes' time.

:42:03.:42:19.

And it may not have been the greatest contest, this, but for

:42:20.:42:43.

everyone who has been on the number one court, if it is the first time

:42:44.:42:48.

they have done it, they will go home and say, we have seen Rafael Nadal

:42:49.:42:52.

play and we saw him play two shots that were out of this world. It is

:42:53.:42:58.

great for this tournament to have Rafa. He has missed the tournament

:42:59.:43:02.

before through injury and has had some early losses, so the public

:43:03.:43:07.

have not seen him play a massive amount. But when he is in full flow

:43:08.:43:12.

like this, it is great for the game in general. He has looked

:43:13.:43:16.

comfortable out there, his first match on grass this season. His

:43:17.:43:21.

movement has been good, he has been aggressive from the baseline, his

:43:22.:43:27.

service has improved. 68% first serves in the match. He will be

:43:28.:43:33.

going for more. Early days, but a lot of positive signs. Number one

:43:34.:43:44.

court have had a good day to day already, Venus Williams winning in

:43:45.:43:48.

straight sets, but a very competitive match. We have got

:43:49.:43:51.

Johanna Konta coming up in a moment or so. Here they have had if not a

:43:52.:44:02.

masterclass, at least an exhibition. Ten times a winner of the French

:44:03.:44:07.

Open, twice a winner here at Wimbledon. The one and only Rafael

:44:08.:44:13.

Nadal. And again. And again. Two blistering

:44:14.:44:36.

winners back-to-back. And after an hour and three quarters

:44:37.:45:37.

in the Wimbledon sunshine on this opening day, Rafael Nadal has three

:45:38.:45:38.

match points. Finishing in style, he is out of

:45:39.:46:12.

here. He is into the second round. And that is Rafael Nadal, a man who

:46:13.:46:23.

is short of grass court tennis. Beware the rest.

:46:24.:46:36.

It really is impressive to watch Nadal on any surface, but to see him

:46:37.:46:44.

come back to Wimbledon, he looks so comfortable. Admittedly he was not

:46:45.:46:48.

put under pressure by his opponent, but when you look to the strength of

:46:49.:46:53.

his game, he is serving well, he is moving well and he looks fit and

:46:54.:46:58.

healthy. And as you saw in the last game, the power he has in his

:46:59.:47:03.

forehand. You are such a tease, Rafa! He has got a good time,

:47:04.:47:08.

though, you have to say. We will hear what Rafa had to say in

:47:09.:47:28.

a moment or so, but a final word about John Millman who is waiting to

:47:29.:47:33.

go off court alongside Rafa, rather than just packing his bags and

:47:34.:47:37.

leaving town. He is not playing in the doubles, but I suppose he may

:47:38.:47:42.

just hang around and pick up an opportunity to play in the mixed to

:47:43.:47:45.

keep his stay in London a bit longer. But this man has had so

:47:46.:47:53.

little play this year because of a hip injury, five months out of the

:47:54.:47:58.

game, he would have loved the experience of playing on this court

:47:59.:48:06.

and playing against Rafael Nadal. Great camaraderie between the two.

:48:07.:48:12.

And a great ovation as well. Nadal is such a popular figure. He has got

:48:13.:48:25.

a tennis court named after him in Barcelona. He has got an asteroid

:48:26.:48:28.

named after him somewhere in the sky. That smile tells you that

:48:29.:48:36.

Rafael Nadal is very happy to be back here at Wimbledon and into the

:48:37.:48:46.

second round. It was the ideal start. He was not under too much

:48:47.:48:50.

pressure from his opponent but they had some good baseline exchanges.

:48:51.:48:58.

But really dominant straight win. A lot of happy people with the Rafael

:48:59.:49:08.

Nadal autograph. And less than two hours. It was almost like an

:49:09.:49:13.

extended training session, a hard training session. When you watch

:49:14.:49:18.

Rafael Nadal train, you sometimes trains harder than when he is in a

:49:19.:49:24.

match situation. But either way, well done, John Millman. 40,000

:49:25.:49:30.

euros for the first round loser. Well done to Rafael Nadal. The last

:49:31.:49:35.

thing he is thinking about is what money is involved here. All he is

:49:36.:49:39.

thinking about is, could that be the first step towards grand slam try it

:49:40.:49:45.

number 60? He is talking to Rishi Persad.

:49:46.:49:52.

How well do you think you play? I do not know how well I played, but I

:49:53.:50:01.

have been here two years without playing on grass and I have a

:50:02.:50:04.

positive start and positive feelings and I am happy how I finished the

:50:05.:50:11.

match. You missed last year and you saw how popular you were out there,

:50:12.:50:14.

the crowd love you. How much does it mean to be back playing here at

:50:15.:50:19.

Wimbledon again? For all the players it is so special playing here. You

:50:20.:50:24.

can imagine the history I have had here, five finals in a row. So, very

:50:25.:50:34.

happy to be back. I give my thanks to the crowd for the support. For me

:50:35.:50:40.

it is always very special to play here and in London and Wimbledon I

:50:41.:50:45.

am happy to be here. Would you say that physically you are in the best

:50:46.:50:48.

shape you are in for an assault on the title? I do not know. I started

:50:49.:50:55.

the season playing good tennis since the beginning. It has been very

:50:56.:51:03.

special and very emotional and I am happy to compete well again on grass

:51:04.:51:08.

and I am prepared to play the next round. Well done today. Many thanks.

:51:09.:51:16.

SUE BARKER: We have so many wonderful champions at the top of

:51:17.:51:20.

the game and Rafa is one of the nicest. He raced through winning the

:51:21.:51:34.

French Open winning just that most of his games. The two times winner

:51:35.:51:38.

is looking ominously good out on Court number one. Rafa gets through

:51:39.:51:51.

in straight sets. But all the talk was about this man come into

:51:52.:51:55.

Wimbledon. There were doubts over his head injury and he was still

:51:56.:51:59.

limping in between points, but it did not hamper his movement too much

:52:00.:52:04.

today as he went through against the very talented Alexander Bublik in

:52:05.:52:14.

straight sets. Alexander took to social media and said, thank you to

:52:15.:52:18.

Andy, the best day of my life so far. That is wonderful. We will hear

:52:19.:52:26.

much more from him in the future. And Andy Murray goes through in

:52:27.:52:29.

straight sets to the delight of the Centre Court crowd. And after the

:52:30.:52:35.

match Andy spoke to Phil Jones. Well played. Is there a sense of

:52:36.:52:43.

extra pomp and ceremony when you are defending champion on day one on

:52:44.:52:49.

Centre court? Maybe there is a little bit extra nerves possibly.

:52:50.:52:56.

But it is not too different. Once you get out there and get through

:52:57.:53:00.

the first few games you settle down and you remember that you can play

:53:01.:53:04.

tennis. That is what you always do and you settle down pretty quickly.

:53:05.:53:21.

In your press conference there was an interesting comment about people

:53:22.:53:21.

perceiving things about you in your body language and people read more

:53:22.:53:24.

into things than there actually is. I was saying I do not know if I'd

:53:25.:53:30.

always sort of... I do not have the smoothest walk at the best of times.

:53:31.:53:36.

Because my hip has been sore and everybody is talking about it,

:53:37.:53:40.

everybody thinks I am hobbling on the court more, because my hip has

:53:41.:53:45.

been sought for a few weeks and maybe I have been limping a bit more

:53:46.:53:50.

and I do not realise it, but I have not been in pain when I have been

:53:51.:53:57.

walking. Dustin Brown is next. What kind of danger does he pose? He is a

:53:58.:54:06.

little bit similar to Alexander Bublik really. He goes for his

:54:07.:54:14.

shots. He has got really good hands, he volleys well and he serves well

:54:15.:54:20.

and he is quite big. He just takes it on. He does not leave to chance.

:54:21.:54:26.

Anything As his opponent you do not get to dictate the match. It is

:54:27.:54:33.

played on his terms. He is quick between the points. He is a fun guy

:54:34.:54:37.

to watch, but not easy to play against. It will be tough. He likes

:54:38.:54:44.

the grass courts. I am sure a lot of people will remember that he be Rafa

:54:45.:54:48.

here a few years ago and he is very dangerous. SUE BARKER: We do

:54:49.:54:53.

remember that, a very difficult opponent. And a message, Andy, we

:54:54.:54:58.

will be watching and analysing your walk over the next couple of days

:54:59.:55:02.

when you head to the practice course. It is a beautiful evening

:55:03.:55:07.

here and everybody is enjoying watching the tennis. We will be

:55:08.:55:11.

watching Johanna Konta next and she is making her way to Court number

:55:12.:55:16.

one and I am sure that is why Henman Hill is packed so they can watch

:55:17.:55:21.

Britain's number one make her way through to the next round. Venus

:55:22.:55:26.

Williams made it through against Elise Mertens of Belgium. She was

:55:27.:55:33.

tested in both sets. She certainly finished it off in style, one of the

:55:34.:55:37.

points of the match. Look at this. She means business. Venus Williams,

:55:38.:55:42.

five times the champion, safely through on Court number one earlier

:55:43.:55:49.

today. A smile from Venus, but it has been a very difficult time for

:55:50.:55:53.

her. She was involved in a car accident in Florida last month which

:55:54.:55:58.

led to the death of a 78-year-old man. A police investigation

:55:59.:56:03.

continues. She said on social media how heartbroken and devastated she

:56:04.:56:08.

was. She asked not to do any interviews until today when there

:56:09.:56:11.

was a very emotional press conference after her match.

:56:12.:56:15.

Having gone through all the things you have both mentally and

:56:16.:56:19.

physically that will help you deal with this situation when the largest

:56:20.:56:27.

trying to be a tennis player. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

:56:28.:56:35.

You wrote on Facebook some very heartfelt words. Is there anything

:56:36.:56:40.

else you want to say about that? There are really no words to

:56:41.:56:48.

describe how devastating and... Yes, I am completely speechless. It is

:56:49.:56:51.

just... I mean I am just... Before we take any further

:56:52.:57:11.

questions, please be aware she is unable to say anything more about

:57:12.:57:16.

this, so I would ask you to respect her wishes, please. It really puts

:57:17.:57:22.

the tennis results in perspective, a very difficult time for Venus

:57:23.:57:27.

Williams right now. But over on centre court another player has had

:57:28.:57:32.

a difficult time. Petra Kvitova coming back after she was stabbed by

:57:33.:57:38.

an intruder in her department -- palming in December. She won the

:57:39.:57:45.

French Open and the tournament at Edgbaston and she has made a fresh

:57:46.:57:49.

return to Centre court. The 11th seed through against you Larsen. --

:57:50.:58:03.

Johanna Larsson. After the match she spoke to us.

:58:04.:58:10.

Just your eighth match back after such a difficult year and you have

:58:11.:58:14.

gone back on to your favourite Court at Wimbledon and you have one, you

:58:15.:58:22.

must be delighted. I did and it was amazing. It was amazing to be back

:58:23.:58:31.

here at Wimbledon. It is the favourite Court of my career and it

:58:32.:58:35.

was amazing to win on it. After everything you have been to wear

:58:36.:58:39.

their times during the winter that you dated you would be able to get

:58:40.:58:47.

back onto Centre Court? Yes, I am very happy the dream came true and I

:58:48.:58:51.

was able to play here again. It was a tough first round. What pleased

:58:52.:58:57.

you with your performance today and what do you think you can still work

:58:58.:59:00.

on? You have only had eight matches now. Yes, it is training where you

:59:01.:59:10.

cannot really claim and you have to play as well as you can. I was

:59:11.:59:15.

nervous before today and that is why I started badly with my serve and I

:59:16.:59:19.

need to improve my first serve and some groundstrokes. You were out up

:59:20.:59:29.

preparation last week in the run up to Wimbledon, how fit do you feel?

:59:30.:59:38.

It was one of the things, I did not serve well today, but with practice

:59:39.:59:42.

I will get better and better. It is great to see you back.

:59:43.:59:48.

SUE BARKER: It is wonderful to see her back, one of the most popular on

:59:49.:59:53.

tour. The number two seed is to, Simona Halep. She reached the

:59:54.:00:00.

quarterfinals here last year and is safely through the opening round.

:00:01.:00:08.

Another seed safely through in straight sets, and this was a tricky

:00:09.:00:15.

one and a very entertaining match, on Court number three, Elina

:00:16.:00:20.

Svitolina beating Ash Barty. So, that's the ladies singles. In

:00:21.:00:46.

the men's, out on Court No. 2, Marin Cilic put out another tricky

:00:47.:00:50.

opponent, Philipp Kohlschreiber. He knows his way around a grass court

:00:51.:00:56.

as well. But he put him out in straight sets and he will face

:00:57.:01:06.

Florian Mayer in the next round. Marin Cilic, delighted to be through

:01:07.:01:12.

chairs is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, one of the great entertainers. He put out

:01:13.:01:17.

the British wild card Cameron Norrie, who has gone to America to

:01:18.:01:21.

play in the college system and was the highest ranked player in college

:01:22.:01:29.

tennis in America, so a big future for him, I'm sure. No big

:01:30.:01:37.

celebration from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga! Nick Kyrgios, this was the sad scene

:01:38.:01:53.

at the end of the second set, he was trailing by two sets to love. It

:01:54.:02:02.

followed an injury kicked up -- picked up at Queen's Club a couple

:02:03.:02:09.

of weeks ago. You can see, a very emotional Nick Kyrgios, having to

:02:10.:02:13.

call it a day. Not the way you want to leave this tournament.

:02:14.:02:22.

Over on BBC Two at the moment, Aljaz Bedene, Britain's number three, is

:02:23.:02:31.

involved in a second set tie-break against the big server from Croatia

:02:32.:02:36.

in the car the, and he's 5-2 up in this one. He lost the opening set

:02:37.:02:44.

tie-break. Karlovic has 22 aces so far. At 6ft 10, he's known for that

:02:45.:02:55.

big serve. That's on BBC Two at the moment. And on the red button, our

:02:56.:03:00.

featured match is Heather Watson, who had fallen down the rankings but

:03:01.:03:06.

came back last week and got to the semifinals at Eastbourne, looks to

:03:07.:03:13.

be back to her best. That match is on the red button. We will keep you

:03:14.:03:24.

up-to-date. So, we have just a few more minutes here on BBC One before

:03:25.:03:31.

we switch over to BBC Two. We had a couple of rain delays earlier, that

:03:32.:03:34.

was unexpected. Coming up, we will be heading to Court No. 1 to see Jo

:03:35.:03:43.

Konta of Great Britain. There have been big questions, we seem to have

:03:44.:03:49.

been talking about lots of injuries, includingJo Konta following that

:03:50.:03:53.

horrendous fall that she had at Eastbourne. Russell Fuller went to

:03:54.:03:56.

ask her how she is doing in preparation for her opening match.

:03:57.:04:05.

Good to see you here, looking fit and healthy, how are you feeling

:04:06.:04:10.

after that horrible fall at Eastbourne? It was a little bit of a

:04:11.:04:18.

nasty fall. Watching it back, it doesn't look good! But the initial

:04:19.:04:24.

trauma of it on court was also magnified because of the shock of

:04:25.:04:30.

it. It definitely affected me for the following couple of days, I was

:04:31.:04:34.

not able to continue at Eastbourne. But in high and doing everything I

:04:35.:04:37.

can to recover well physically and mentally. You're playing this

:04:38.:04:45.

Taiwanese opponent in the first round, just as you did at Roland

:04:46.:04:50.

Garros, which is a bit bizarre? It is, I think it is exciting, but it

:04:51.:04:55.

is another great opportunity for me to play against her. She is very

:04:56.:05:00.

capable on this surface, she's a champion on doubles so she can

:05:01.:05:04.

definitely play on grass. Most importantly, I will be going in and

:05:05.:05:08.

preparing well and trying to stick to my game plan and most importantly

:05:09.:05:13.

enjoy being on Court No. 1. Andy Murray was saying, there are some

:05:14.:05:18.

drawbacks being a British player, at Wimbledon, with all of the attention

:05:19.:05:23.

- do you quite enjoy it or do you find it a distraction? I definitely

:05:24.:05:27.

think it is a good problem to have, it is a positive thing. Again, it is

:05:28.:05:34.

putting our sport on the map, and putting the women's side as well. So

:05:35.:05:40.

I think overall, it's a very exciting thing.

:05:41.:05:51.

Well, Jo Konta walks onto court just a few moments ago, she is up against

:05:52.:05:57.

the woman who defeated her at the French Open, a really tricky

:05:58.:06:02.

opponent. This is not going to be an easy match for Jo. We have still got

:06:03.:06:07.

a few minutes here on BBC One before we move over to BBC Two. Sit back

:06:08.:06:11.

and enjoy the start with Annabel Croft and Andrew Cotter. To label

:06:12.:06:16.

the rewards are many as you rise up the rankings and become one of the

:06:17.:06:21.

best in the world, which Jo Konta is now. But for a British tennis player

:06:22.:06:25.

at Wimbledon, that success brings Russia and expectation. Even with

:06:26.:06:30.

that fall at Eastbourne and withdraw from the semifinal, there is some

:06:31.:06:35.

excitement and expectation of a good run here for Jo Konta, but a tricky

:06:36.:06:38.

opponent here, from Taiwan. Annabel Croft alongside me already

:06:39.:07:15.

highlighted during the knock up the danger of the Hsieh Su-Wei backhand.

:07:16.:07:42.

Well, Hsieh Su-Wei is fully aware of how aggressive Jo Konta is off the

:07:43.:07:51.

return of serve. It's something she worked on incredibly hard in the

:07:52.:07:54.

off-season. She will be looking to stamp her authority on that return.

:07:55.:08:08.

A little bit untidy from Hsieh. ANNABEL CROFT: It was a ball which

:08:09.:08:19.

was easy to attack, she will be a bit disappointed with that.

:08:20.:08:29.

And that's a dodgy second serve, a few early nerves, I think. Two

:08:30.:08:43.

double faults and two break points for Johanna Konta.

:08:44.:09:19.

There will be nerves, too, of course, for Konta, with home

:09:20.:09:28.

pressure and being one of the favourites now.

:09:29.:09:33.

That's well played, though, by Hsieh.

:09:34.:10:04.

That's impressive from the Taiwanese player, two break points seen off.

:10:05.:10:14.

She's really deceptive as a tennis player, because she takes the ball

:10:15.:10:18.

incredibly early and strikes right through the centre of the ball,

:10:19.:10:22.

sometimes she can slice underneath it, and she creates a very good

:10:23.:10:32.

angle and creates pace as well. So, this is a very difficult, tricky

:10:33.:10:37.

opening match, this, for Johanna Konta. And they have met twice, and

:10:38.:10:48.

Konta has lost twice. The quality of the second serve that

:10:49.:12:09.

we've talked about. On -- good depth.

:12:10.:12:26.

Andrew Fitzpatrick, who's up in the support camp, the hitting partner,

:12:27.:12:34.

he has said that he has so much confidence in her serve, he really

:12:35.:12:39.

feels she can pick the spot she wants to hit and she can really nail

:12:40.:12:41.

it. Just too powerful in her first

:12:42.:12:55.

service game, and Johan Konta has her first game on the board.

:12:56.:13:04.

SUE BARKER: I did say that we would only be there briefly, because this

:13:05.:13:12.

match now continues over on BBC Two. If you want to continue watching Jo

:13:13.:13:15.

Konta in this very tricky opener against Hsieh Su-Wei, that now

:13:16.:13:19.

continues on BBC Two. The headlines today... Wins for Andy Murray, Venus

:13:20.:13:26.

Williams, Rafa Nadal and Petra Kvitova, all going through in

:13:27.:13:30.

straight sets. All the talk coming into today was about Andy Murray and

:13:31.:13:33.

his injury. Well, there was a limp in between points, but it didn't

:13:34.:13:38.

hamper him too much, and he has made a winning start to the defence of

:13:39.:13:43.

his title. So now, we wait to see if Britain's number one woman, Jo

:13:44.:13:48.

Konta, and follow suit, because just like Murray, she is a contender for

:13:49.:13:52.

the title. Hope you enjoyed the tennis today. We continue on BBC

:13:53.:13:55.

Two. We may see you there. Goodbye.
