This is a national programme. Now we are going to take you over to women

:00:08.:00:13.

women... -- over to Wimbledon. Her Majesty to present the trophy.

:00:14.:00:20.

Brilliant. Oh, yeah. SUE BARKER: Wimbledon 2017 is under

:00:21.:00:48.

way and Day 1 didn't disappoint with stories everywhere you looked.

:00:49.:00:54.

She has done it. It's great to see her back, playing as well as this.

:00:55.:01:04.

It's another of those magical Centre Court stories. Venus Williams. Her

:01:05.:01:07.

first match on grass this year, starts with a win. The smile says it

:01:08.:01:16.

all for Heather Watson. Finishing in style, Rafael Nadal beware the rest.

:01:17.:01:33.

And Konata to win the watch. Done it before. The sign of a champ. Now for

:01:34.:01:41.

Day 2 and a look at two more greats of the men's game.

:01:42.:01:49.

# It takes two to make a thing go right

:01:50.:01:57.

# It takes two to make it out of sight... #

:01:58.:02:08.

Yes, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are today's headline acts

:02:09.:02:16.

with so much anticipation about Federer, in particular, at this

:02:17.:02:19.

year's Wimbledon but plenty to enjoy as well on the outside courts, you

:02:20.:02:23.

can watch our comprehensive coverage on BBC Television, the red button,

:02:24.:02:28.

BBC Sport website and apps. So there are so many ways you can watch the

:02:29.:02:37.

tennis unfold here on Day 2 of the Championship.

:02:38.:02:38.

Some of the stars who will be on court arriving here today. Angelique

:02:39.:02:44.

Kerber she will open up Centre Court today in the absence of defending

:02:45.:02:48.

champion, Serena Williams. Juan Martin Del Potro, he halls an early

:02:49.:02:55.

start. He is on court at 11.30. The 2009 US Open champion and former

:02:56.:03:01.

semifinalist here. And Novak Djokovic has just arrived on one of

:03:02.:03:07.

the outside courts here, Court 10, practising with his team, with Andre

:03:08.:03:22.

Aggassi. So, let's have a look at the order

:03:23.:03:27.

of play. Centre Court gets under way at 1.00pm:

:03:28.:04:05.

Other watches we will be following out on Court Two:

:04:06.:04:20.

we will go to the Edmund-Ward match shortly.

:04:21.:04:29.

That is tea what we have on offer. I'm up above Henman Hill and they've

:04:30.:04:42.

spoilt me today with two of the all-time greats, Billie Jean king

:04:43.:04:46.

and Boris Becker. What a treat for me. Lovely to see you back, I know

:04:47.:04:51.

you love this tournament My 57th year. That tells you how much I love

:04:52.:04:59.

it. Every year. How exciting is it, this year in both the men and

:05:00.:05:02.

women's? Wide open. Unbelievable. I was using that red button yesterday

:05:03.:05:06.

trying to watch all the different courts because I need to watch them,

:05:07.:05:11.

I don't get to watch as much any more. I was all over the place on

:05:12.:05:18.

the BBC with that red button. So I suggest to people, if you are home,

:05:19.:05:25.

you can watch almost any court at Wimbledon, so just check what

:05:26.:05:28.

matches you want, fantastic. You can avoid me. No, I don't want to avoid

:05:29.:05:34.

you. If you come down here you have to watch these courts. I know. On

:05:35.:05:42.

the app you can watch any match you like. And you can hear the

:05:43.:05:44.

announcers. Keep learning. He with always have to keep learning. What

:05:45.:05:48.

did you learn yesterday from Andy Murray what were your thoughts? That

:05:49.:05:52.

he was fit enough to win. The good news. He had a wobble. The funny

:05:53.:05:58.

thing was, once the points started he was fit as a fiddle. I don't know

:05:59.:06:05.

how many drop shots he caught. Once the point ended he started limped.

:06:06.:06:11.

I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I'm sure he has something. The

:06:12.:06:16.

overriding problem is a lot of expectation. He is the champion. The

:06:17.:06:20.

whole country wants him to repeat, the bigger problem. I think the hip

:06:21.:06:23.

is something he will manage, otherwise he wouldn't have played.

:06:24.:06:26.

He was good enough to win yesterday. I'm sure he is sore this morning a

:06:27.:06:34.

little bit but he is good enough to go all the way. You think? I think

:06:35.:06:40.

it really helps to have every other day off, and you don't have to worry

:06:41.:06:46.

about bad weather any more because you have the roof. That's huge,

:06:47.:06:50.

especially if you have a niggle. I don't think there is ever a match

:06:51.:06:55.

people play, if we didn't have niggles. If he says it is good

:06:56.:07:01.

enough - I hope he does the right thing for himself and not worry too

:07:02.:07:07.

much. I know he wants to play for the country, show up for Britain.

:07:08.:07:13.

But I think he needs to take care of himself. Sometimes, if it is not

:07:14.:07:19.

right, it is a short-term loss for a long-term gain but he looked fine

:07:20.:07:23.

yesterday. That's him out on the practise court now. Still with a

:07:24.:07:26.

limp going on, as Boris said. As expected. It was interesting, Phil

:07:27.:07:30.

Jones after the match, he asked him about the injury and the limp. In

:07:31.:07:35.

your press conference you made an interesting comment about people

:07:36.:07:38.

perreceiving things or being on court with your body language or

:07:39.:07:41.

maybe there is a limp there that people are looking into more than it

:07:42.:07:47.

actually is. Yes, I was just saying I don't know if he always sort of -

:07:48.:07:54.

I don't think I have the smoothest walk at the best of times. I don't

:07:55.:08:00.

know, just because my hip has been sore and everyone has been talking

:08:01.:08:04.

about t like everyone thinks that I'm, I don't know hobbling on the

:08:05.:08:10.

court more or just because my hip has been sore for a few weeks that I

:08:11.:08:16.

have been limping a little bit and I don't even realise. But I'm not in

:08:17.:08:23.

pain when I'm walking on court. I felt fine. That's positive He is

:08:24.:08:27.

fine then, go for it. You can knotted reach the places he reached,

:08:28.:08:32.

a crazy player, he must have caught 25 drop shots. He was totally fine

:08:33.:08:38.

and after he went back to living. Maybe because he had this problem

:08:39.:08:42.

for a while, it became his walk now. I wouldn't hit too many drop shots

:08:43.:08:46.

against him. Too quick. Great anticipation, they are testing his

:08:47.:08:49.

hip. They did the right thing but after the first three or four, you

:08:50.:08:56.

say - forget that, this guy is 100%. They have such a great team. Talking

:08:57.:09:02.

about two ice baths today. One would finish me off. One at Wimbledon and

:09:03.:09:09.

another before he goes to bed. Doing the right thing. Great supporting

:09:10.:09:15.

team. Without it, it is impossible. Not only Ivan Lendl and Jamie. It is

:09:16.:09:21.

everybody else. You know, to win Wimbledon you need to have the

:09:22.:09:24.

perfect team in every shape and former. I think Andy has that. It

:09:25.:09:28.

makes such a big difference to have the money today. I look at the teams

:09:29.:09:35.

and their overheads and I go - great. That helps you stay at your

:09:36.:09:39.

optimum level all year long. They are a brand now. That's why they can

:09:40.:09:47.

play in their mid-30s. Roger Federer is an example. You don't have to

:09:48.:09:54.

stop at 30 or 31. Or back in the days, 26. The recovery wasn't the

:09:55.:10:00.

same and you got slower. We didn't have the information available,

:10:01.:10:03.

nutrition, technology. All these things help a player stay as long as

:10:04.:10:07.

we can. Yesterday, Stanislas Wawrinka going out. It wasn't good

:10:08.:10:11.

to see him play yesterday. I'm a big fan of Stan the Man but he is not

:10:12.:10:19.

comfortable on grass. He never won this tournament. The only one he

:10:20.:10:22.

never won. There was always a question mark and the young guns, we

:10:23.:10:28.

talk about the fear. There is no fear. They don't care who is on the

:10:29.:10:34.

other side. 21 years' young and they can all play and slowly but surely

:10:35.:10:38.

the gap is closing. The young guns are starting to arrive. That will be

:10:39.:10:45.

interesting. There will be a passing of the guard but right now hold on

:10:46.:10:49.

to what we have. And yesterday, Aljaz Bedene, after four-and-a-half

:10:50.:10:52.

hours out there, he finally broke Ivo Karlovic, a mammoth match. Yes

:10:53.:10:55.

for everybody playing him, every 28 minutes, you have a chance for the

:10:56.:11:01.

other 27, one side to the other, you cannot touch it. Karlovic had 44

:11:02.:11:07.

aces. Maybe he hit ten in the whole match but he broke t he did t the

:11:08.:11:16.

only break of the match and good for him. A big celebration at the end.

:11:17.:11:21.

He hung in. You have to keep hanging in. Like you said, you walk back and

:11:22.:11:26.

forth. Nice shot. You get no rhythm. Really difficult. What #23r your

:11:27.:11:31.

thoughts on Jo Konta. She came in having lost at the French Open but

:11:32.:11:37.

came in having done well at Eastbourne. She had a bad fall. I

:11:38.:11:42.

saw that fall, wow, whiplash. I thought she played really well. So

:11:43.:11:46.

interesting her story, how she got the sports psychologist and changed.

:11:47.:11:50.

She used to be a choke. Everybody said - stay with her, she'll choke,

:11:51.:11:54.

she's not very good. She has changed everything. Her mentality. Became a

:11:55.:11:59.

citizen here. All the right things. I love listening to her in her

:12:00.:12:03.

interviews. She figured it out, the only way you will win, one ball at a

:12:04.:12:10.

time. Don't get too high or low. She has figured it out. Given herself

:12:11.:12:16.

the opportunity to be the best she can be, what a price to pay a will

:12:17.:12:23.

the of players don't want to pay the price. The only thing that went off

:12:24.:12:27.

a little yesterday was her forehand but she figures it out and adjusts

:12:28.:12:33.

well, compared to how she used to be, although we talked about her

:12:34.:12:36.

having a little trouble adjusting but she's smart. She played a little

:12:37.:12:39.

Grasse coming in and she has adjusted -- played a little grass.

:12:40.:12:46.

It is a surface where you have to adjust. Yes, no two ways around it.

:12:47.:12:50.

They play grass these two weeks of the year and it is a different

:12:51.:12:54.

surface to where everybody is coming from. They need to pick up a

:12:55.:13:00.

tournament. I'm amazed some of these players not choosing some to play.

:13:01.:13:04.

Even Novak Djokovic decided to play at Eastbourne. He would've been a

:13:05.:13:08.

different player today if he hadn't played the four matches. This is a

:13:09.:13:13.

surface where you have to adapt, as you say. At Wimbledon you want it

:13:14.:13:18.

shine. This is the place to shine and I think Konta is embracing that

:13:19.:13:23.

fact. She is a better player now on grass than she was a couple of weeks

:13:24.:13:30.

ago. Thank you for the moment. We will look ahead to today but what

:13:31.:13:34.

about the weather. It was lovely and sunny when we got here but clouded

:13:35.:13:40.

over now. Let's find out what is in store with the lovely Carol

:13:41.:13:42.

Kirkwood. Well you are right, it has cloud you

:13:43.:13:47.

had over as you can see but through the afternoon the cloud will break

:13:48.:13:50.

and there will be further sunny spells, although a bit cloudier than

:13:51.:13:56.

today. Only a 10% risk of a shower this afternoon. Right enough

:13:57.:14:00.

yesterday there was only a 20% and we saw one but we expect it to stay

:14:01.:14:05.

mostly dry. Not just through the afternoon but through into the

:14:06.:14:10.

evening. You will notice this evening a build-up in cloud again.

:14:11.:14:13.

The temperature just coming down a little bit. For tomorrow, it'll be

:14:14.:14:17.

hot, humid and a lot of sunshine around. Temperatures, 27 to 28 with

:14:18.:14:21.

a low probability of hitting 30 Celsius. So a sticky feel to the day

:14:22.:14:27.

and so, just before I go, Sue, your favourite subject, the pollen levels

:14:28.:14:32.

today Will. Today here at Wimbledon they are high. And that is not good

:14:33.:14:37.

news for you, is it Carol? I have warned you and it is going to start

:14:38.:14:44.

happening from tomorrow I'm going to start asking you questions about the

:14:45.:14:49.

drew. You are part of the team now, are you ready? Yes. Get looking. Gl

:14:50.:14:53.

questions tomorrow. And get your antihistamine. No-one suffers from

:14:54.:14:56.

hay fever here. No. No. I'm ready. I take something for it. Now we will

:14:57.:15:02.

look ahead to today and the big act on Centre Court is Roger Federer T

:15:03.:15:07.

looks like he is playing the best tennis of his career. -- it looks

:15:08.:15:11.

like he is playing the best tennis of his career. He come into 2017,

:15:12.:15:16.

won the Australian Open, his 18th Grand Slam title. He has been

:15:17.:15:18.

talking to Jonathan overend. Roger Federer remains the boss on

:15:19.:15:30.

Centre Court. Well, Roger, 14 years since your

:15:31.:15:41.

first victory and five years since your last and yet you are the

:15:42.:15:45.

favourite again. Can you believe that? I don't know who says that,

:15:46.:15:49.

but it is strange for a 35-year-old, who has not played the clay court

:15:50.:15:57.

season at all to come in here as the season. That's why I don't believe

:15:58.:16:02.

everything I hear. How strategic was that decision to miss the clay court

:16:03.:16:06.

season, in terms of your career management? Well, I think it was

:16:07.:16:09.

more decisions based on health, looking forward to still a tough and

:16:10.:16:14.

gruelling year. You know I'm not 22 any more where I can just play every

:16:15.:16:21.

tournament I see and just go Pacman and go, yum, yum and eat everything.

:16:22.:16:25.

I have to be smart about my scheduling. I felt like my best

:16:26.:16:29.

chance to do well here at Wimbledon was to not play Paris. It was a

:16:30.:16:35.

tough decision. The first time in my life actually I pull out of a major,

:16:36.:16:41.

feeling 100% ready to G the first time in basically 18 years I had six

:16:42.:16:47.

months to myself with my family, with my wife and I could dictate

:16:48.:16:53.

where I wanted to be and when to do what. It is supposed to be nice and

:16:54.:17:00.

refreshing. I think it shows on the tennis court ever since. What was

:17:01.:17:06.

the best thing you did? I did a lot of hiking in the Swiss mountains, I

:17:07.:17:10.

enjoyed. We went to the Hamptons outside of New York shortly before

:17:11.:17:14.

the US Open. Went to the Paris fashion show. Did my first trip with

:17:15.:17:20.

my wife away from the kids. Stuff that we normally never have time to

:17:21.:17:24.

do. Fantastic. And then this season and you win in Australia, an 18th

:17:25.:17:29.

Grand Slam. Did you honestly believe you could win another one? I mean I

:17:30.:17:34.

believed I could win another one, but not Australia. I was hoping to

:17:35.:17:39.

be 100% ready and match-ready and here at Wimbledon. Australia was for

:17:40.:17:45.

me, more of a stepping stone to be quite Hones. I thought if I could

:17:46.:17:49.

make the quarters or semis that would be unbelievable, because we

:17:50.:17:53.

have to not forget also I started the season as 17 in the world. It

:17:54.:17:59.

Should you triumph here again, five years after your last, where would

:18:00.:18:05.

that rank in terms of all your great achievements? Extremely high.

:18:06.:18:08.

Australia, it almost felt like the best win of my career. I don't know

:18:09.:18:14.

how to tell you. It felt that amazing. It came that much of a

:18:15.:18:18.

surprise. I'm playing so much more relaxed and free tennis. Ever since

:18:19.:18:23.

winning Australia, I can even play more freely. I'm trying to remind

:18:24.:18:28.

myself every single point I play, keep going for your shots. Enjoy

:18:29.:18:31.

your things and good things will happen. Worrying for opponents.

:18:32.:18:35.

Well, never a guarantee you will still pull off the good shots. You

:18:36.:18:41.

might hit the back fence. So nice, he talks as well as he played and

:18:42.:18:47.

going on about that match against Rafa at the Australian Open. To come

:18:48.:18:53.

back from a break down in the fifth against Rafa, almost ununheard of. I

:18:54.:18:59.

love his honest words and he does it in five languages. The guy has the

:19:00.:19:04.

Full Monty. Not only the best player, a very intelligent man.

:19:05.:19:07.

Father of four. Very honest. He didn't believe he was going to win

:19:08.:19:10.

Australia. He had a six-month break, testing the waters, whether his

:19:11.:19:13.

fittedness and playing level is back. All of a sudden he wins

:19:14.:19:20.

against Nadal and ever since then he is playing. You said he is playing

:19:21.:19:25.

his best tennis, he has to because the competition is better. If you

:19:26.:19:31.

look at his year, he has played 26 matches, won 24, only lost two and

:19:32.:19:37.

had match points in both matches that he lost. Think about that. I

:19:38.:19:41.

have been watching him forever. All the women we call him Our Husband.

:19:42.:19:49.

Howl the women go - how did Our Husband do today? We love him that

:19:50.:19:55.

much. How can you not love him? He is honest, he speaks so many lancing

:19:56.:20:02.

wadges. I love to watch how his head is so still. How he watches the ball

:20:03.:20:08.

and how dynamic his body S he is the best-ever. His preparations before

:20:09.:20:13.

each shot is mazing with foot work. He has prepared faster than any

:20:14.:20:18.

other player in the history of the game. The greatest ever. And the

:20:19.:20:21.

one-handed backhand now is such a threat because the racket face is

:20:22.:20:25.

bigger. He has a bigger sweep spot. I'm telling you, he is playing

:20:26.:20:30.

better than ever and I think taking that six months off was the major

:20:31.:20:37.

thing. He is so swift in that he man axe his time perfectly. They really

:20:38.:20:41.

have a lot of thought on his schedule, like he mentioned. I think

:20:42.:20:47.

he is amazing but when he is out there, I think deep down to the core

:20:48.:20:54.

ever of his being, he thinks - I always have a chance if I play well.

:20:55.:21:00.

He is amazing, I just think... I can't say enough, nobody can, he can

:21:01.:21:07.

do everything. And I think he is better at net than he used to be,

:21:08.:21:12.

finding his backhand volley, particularly. When I spoke to him

:21:13.:21:17.

recently I said was it the love of winning or the fear of losing. He

:21:18.:21:21.

said he never fears losing but he loves winning. His motivation. The

:21:22.:21:26.

ultimate for any sportsman and women. The feeling on Centre Court,

:21:27.:21:30.

having match points. We are chasing. He has won so much but for him to

:21:31.:21:35.

keep chasing, the interesting thing think is, he can not get rid of

:21:36.:21:42.

that. He has it until the end of time but as long as he can do it

:21:43.:21:48.

with the tennis raect, he will do it. He is looking more aggressive I

:21:49.:21:56.

tell us, a lot of us hated the losing, rather than the wink. The

:21:57.:22:02.

pain of losing. Well he said the opposite. He doesn't have much pain,

:22:03.:22:07.

he doesn't lose. Even when he loses, he has match point. He dud stand

:22:08.:22:12.

pain, I suppose. Now moving on to Novak Djokovic, a different year for

:22:13.:22:16.

him. He came into Wimbledon last year holding all four Grand Slam

:22:17.:22:22.

titles. Now he has none but he won the title the Eastbourne.

:22:23.:22:27.

Nof be a, your trip is Eastbourne, it was well worth it? -- Nova zm, It

:22:28.:22:38.

was. It feels like a good decision. I felt as the tournament was

:22:39.:22:41.

progressing, I was raising the level and quality of tennis, which is

:22:42.:22:45.

something that I was hoping for and looking forward to. Right now, I

:22:46.:22:48.

couldn't ask for a better preparation for Wimbledon. I made

:22:49.:22:52.

the decision to go to Eastbourne because I felt like I needed to have

:22:53.:22:57.

official tournament and official matches on grass, which requiring

:22:58.:22:59.

time for adaptation, adjustment of the movement and, you know, it is a

:23:00.:23:06.

completely different game plan. I really enjoyed myself there and I

:23:07.:23:10.

think I'm coming into Wimbledon, you know, more confident and really

:23:11.:23:15.

excited, of course for what is coming up. Your coaching team for

:23:16.:23:25.

the next two weeks, Andre Aggasi and Mario, so why supply a Wall Street

:23:26.:23:33.

banker? I don't see it like that. We played against each other a lot.

:23:34.:23:38.

Even in Wimbledon. I'm happy to see him not not jacket and suit and tie,

:23:39.:23:43.

I'm happy to see him in his tennis attire. And we'll spend quality time

:23:44.:23:48.

here with Andre, him and myself before Wimbledon and we will take it

:23:49.:23:53.

from there. And if you do win here in two weeks time you will be a

:23:54.:23:57.

four-time Wimbledon champion, the same number of titles Rod Laver. Do

:23:58.:24:05.

those mile stones, do you use them as motivation? Of course it is an

:24:06.:24:10.

incentive, absolutely. As much as I have achieved in my life n my

:24:11.:24:16.

career, I still want to do more. I think that hunger for me, it brings

:24:17.:24:22.

good energy, it brings motivation to you day-in and day-out, to put a lot

:24:23.:24:30.

of North East trying to be the best I can be. -- into trying to be the

:24:31.:24:36.

best I can be. And Boris, it has been a tough year, a tough 12 months

:24:37.:24:44.

for Novak. We shouldn't be surprised. He is human. A year ago

:24:45.:24:50.

on top of the mountain, four titles. So he has all the reasons in the

:24:51.:24:55.

world to put his pedal off the metal a bit. To concentrate more on his

:24:56.:24:59.

family. The result, expecting another baby in September. That was

:25:00.:25:02.

more important to him. I'm family guy, I get that. His head is back

:25:03.:25:05.

into tennis. He has Agassi in his corner. I was

:25:06.:25:21.

so pleased to see him at Eastbourne. Some things you don't get in

:25:22.:25:26.

practise, you get in a match and all of a sudden he is a different

:25:27.:25:32.

Djokovic than he was a few weeks ago. Oh, you have to win matches.

:25:33.:25:38.

You can practise all you want but there is nothing like it when they

:25:39.:25:43.

say "play." It is real. He was right. I think he really needs to

:25:44.:25:47.

figure out his team. Djokovic needs that stability. He really needs T he

:25:48.:25:54.

has Agassi there, but if Ancic is the right guy, fine, he needs that

:25:55.:26:02.

stability, so he knows who is in his camp and what is happening. The

:26:03.:26:06.

disruptions, it is difficult. After losing the French I think he lost a

:26:07.:26:12.

bit of his mojo. Now he is back, you can tell from the interview he is

:26:13.:26:17.

back and wants it again. A great sign. You had so much success with

:26:18.:26:21.

him, Boris, he obviously loves to learn. It is all about the mental

:26:22.:26:27.

side of preparing for the big matches, like at Wimbledon. Well, he

:26:28.:26:33.

knows how to hit a forehand backhand by himself without anybody. It is

:26:34.:26:36.

the moments before the final about the preparation week. Almost it is

:26:37.:26:39.

about the dinners and breakfasts we have together of - why do you want

:26:40.:26:47.

it play still at 30. What is the motivation? Is it history, your

:26:48.:26:50.

children? With players like that, who want so much, it is more than

:26:51.:26:55.

just winning the tennis match, there has to be a story about it. It is so

:26:56.:27:02.

difficult. So desperate to win. Sometimes you canp want it too much.

:27:03.:27:06.

Yes and you choke because you get too tense. If you are too tense you

:27:07.:27:12.

don't have the power and fluidity you need on each stroke. He is a guy

:27:13.:27:18.

who is really #1345r9. Another one, five languages, he speaks even

:27:19.:27:21.

German. He is very interested in the world around him. Did he ask you a

:27:22.:27:27.

lot of questions. A lot. He reminds me of a person who asks a lot of

:27:28.:27:34.

questions. The first thing I ask any player, 10, 11, 12, why do you play

:27:35.:27:39.

tennis. ? That's the person I ask. You can see the different responses,

:27:40.:27:45.

you are asking Djokovic, are you up for this, do you want it play? Why

:27:46.:27:51.

are you still playing? Why? You have to understand that about yourself.

:27:52.:27:55.

Why was it? He wanted to win. The winning. He is such a great athlete.

:27:56.:27:59.

Another one who is phenomenal. His balance, hisibility. Second to none.

:28:00.:28:05.

He is amazing. I call him physically a freak of nature. Most people would

:28:06.:28:11.

get injured the way he is sliding on the court, for sure. They have ankle

:28:12.:28:15.

breaks and knee breaks, he gets up and goes back, because he does so

:28:16.:28:21.

much stretching, so much off-kouft work. -- off-court work. Hard

:28:22.:28:24.

physical labour almost It is paying the price. A lot of players go in

:28:25.:28:29.

and out paying the price. He does it daly, the same way Federer, Murray,

:28:30.:28:35.

all of them. You wake up in the morning, even if you don't feel like

:28:36.:28:41.

it, you get out and have the discipline. That's what people don't

:28:42.:28:44.

see. And an dry Aggassi, I understand why he has gone to him.

:28:45.:28:49.

He had a similar dip in his career and he reinvented himself. Maybe he

:28:50.:28:54.

is hoping that from him? Yes Andre won more majors in his 30s than

:28:55.:28:59.

before. Novak turned 30 a couple of weeks ago. That's the discussions

:29:00.:29:03.

they have - what kept you going, what was the motivation? Also, Andre

:29:04.:29:07.

is very much into his foundation as is Novak Djokovic, you combine the

:29:08.:29:11.

reasons why you want it add another Wimbledon Championship because you

:29:12.:29:14.

want to help others. The message is spreading across, it is more

:29:15.:29:17.

powerful if you are the winner. #r Do you know the platform that tennis

:29:18.:29:24.

players have if you are at the top. We have a global platform to do good

:29:25.:29:30.

and make this world a better place and that's what they are doing. And,

:29:31.:29:35.

he just needs to come in with confidence, win a couple of matches

:29:36.:29:40.

and everyone will forget what happened this year? This is an

:29:41.:29:44.

important tournament to decide how was 2017. You know, if he loses in

:29:45.:29:49.

the quarter-final before, the time is running out to make this a

:29:50.:29:53.

reasonable year, even for his standard so he needs this one. He

:29:54.:29:58.

needs to go ideally all the way and then he can say - I did come back.

:29:59.:30:07.

You have to remember when this tournament is. It is pivotal, right

:30:08.:30:14.

in the middle of the year or a little later but basically the

:30:15.:30:17.

middle. The French and Wimbledon. This is where the year point, it

:30:18.:30:22.

changes everything. If you can win one of those or do well. Then you

:30:23.:30:27.

have the US Open. The players are tired by then. It is very

:30:28.:30:31.

interesting. If you get going now maybe you haven't done well, you

:30:32.:30:36.

will do better by the end of the year. Thank you so much.

:30:37.:30:43.

Alex Ward had a wrist injury and was out for a few months. His ranking is

:30:44.:30:55.

at 869. He has won through the qualifiers to take his place. The

:30:56.:31:01.

first thing to do is wish Susan are very happy birthday. It is a

:31:02.:31:09.

significant one. What a way to spend your 60th birthday, at Wimbledon! It

:31:10.:31:14.

is the best present ever. I am still getting over it and enjoying it. I

:31:15.:31:19.

hope it will continue all day. 12 months ago you came to Wimbledon

:31:20.:31:24.

with Alex and I understand it was quite emotional for you. It was. It

:31:25.:31:29.

was a commendation of him trying to get better at tennis and trying to

:31:30.:31:33.

get to the top and increase his ranking. The fact he got to play,

:31:34.:31:40.

the pinnacle here, is marvellous. It is an outpouring of all those years

:31:41.:31:48.

of hoping the best for him. Given idea of the struggles he has had to

:31:49.:31:54.

enjoy with injury, support, except. Over the years he has had quite a

:31:55.:31:58.

few injuries since he has been playing professionally. His ankle,

:31:59.:32:08.

and he had to come back on crutches. He has had a knee operation. Various

:32:09.:32:17.

stress fractures in his arm. He has just got over some problems in his

:32:18.:32:23.

wrist. He really had to struggle financially. I did not know about

:32:24.:32:32.

that. All through the decision, God bless him, that he wants to carry on

:32:33.:32:36.

playing and he wants to do his best. He feels he has a lot to give and

:32:37.:32:42.

achieve. As his mum, how do you feel when you see him going through those

:32:43.:32:48.

struggles, to see him here competing against fellow Brit on the bigger

:32:49.:32:53.

stage? It is wonderful. I am overjoyed for him. I admire him. The

:32:54.:33:02.

fact he has carried himself so well. I think he has probably shielded me

:33:03.:33:06.

for that he keeps his worries to himself and does not let me know. I

:33:07.:33:16.

hope you and he have the best day today. Thank you very much. Quite a

:33:17.:33:25.

story! These are the guys who were struggling to make ends meet survey

:33:26.:33:30.

could continue to play on the circuit. This match means a huge

:33:31.:33:36.

amount to Alex Ward. He has come through as a qualifier. He has never

:33:37.:33:43.

won a match at Wimbledon. He is break of serve up.

:33:44.:33:53.

New balls in play for Ward. Just the one break in the opening game.

:33:54.:34:06.

He has been very nervous. Still breathing very heavily in the last

:34:07.:34:13.

game. Struggling to settle and low on confidence. He does not have a

:34:14.:34:17.

coach. They parted company very recently.

:34:18.:34:42.

By comparison, it looks like he has played him many times before. He did

:34:43.:35:01.

play after competing against Goffin in the main part of the draw. That

:35:02.:35:05.

is what coming through qualifying does view. He already feels like he

:35:06.:35:10.

has won a tournament by getting here. -- does for you. Sometimes you

:35:11.:35:19.

need an outside motivational force. We heard from his mother earlier on.

:35:20.:35:27.

He had maxed out his credit cards. He has ?35,000. He can probably

:35:28.:35:34.

clear a lot of it, maybe all of it, and take his mother out for dinner

:35:35.:35:35.

on her birthday. It is a great story. Mother on the

:35:36.:35:55.

right. Best birthday present she could ever have wished for, she

:35:56.:35:56.

says. Just errors like that from Edmund.

:35:57.:36:19.

There have been a number of matches that have gone away from him at the

:36:20.:36:27.

end. His focus. In a match like this committee is overwhelming favourite.

:36:28.:36:31.

There is pressure. When he came on to court, he did not look like he

:36:32.:36:36.

was ranked 50 in the world and his opponent was in the 800s.

:36:37.:36:43.

He played a very shaky first service game because of nerves. Alexander

:36:44.:36:56.

Ward is embracing the situation. During his Wimbledon career, Kyle

:36:57.:37:02.

Edmund has not embraced it. He has lost in the first round the last

:37:03.:37:08.

four years. That does not help his cause. He has lost confidence

:37:09.:37:17.

recently. Every time he misses his first serve, Ward is stepping in and

:37:18.:37:23.

trying to get the first out. Very attack minded. He is opening up his

:37:24.:37:30.

shoulders and having a go. He is not afraid at all. Kyle Edmund has only

:37:31.:37:38.

lost one point behind his first serve.

:37:39.:38:01.

Full house on Court three. 2000 seats and many of free fraud. Many

:38:02.:38:12.

rushed here when the gates opened. -- many of them a free for all.

:38:13.:38:38.

Great work ethic. If you speak to anybody who knows anything about

:38:39.:38:51.

him. He will have to serve out the

:38:52.:39:33.

opening set, Ward. After everything we have talked about, the litany of

:39:34.:39:38.

injuries, it has been one thing after another. Here he is at 27. He

:39:39.:39:46.

still has a huge desire to keep playing. That is why Wimbledon is so

:39:47.:39:53.

important to him. To have qualified and make the money. That literally

:39:54.:39:57.

can pay for his expenses throughout the year. When you see the prize

:39:58.:40:03.

money announced, some think it is way too much money. These players

:40:04.:40:10.

need that money to pay for expensive, without hiring a coach.

:40:11.:40:16.

It is an expensive game, tennis. You see what the top players are making

:40:17.:40:23.

that at the bottom, not nearly so much. You have to admire Ward. He

:40:24.:40:28.

loves it. What a great result to qualify. He has a chance to take a

:40:29.:40:34.

set lead. He has only lost one point behind

:40:35.:41:04.

his first serve. That is what the second serve diffs

:41:05.:42:43.

-- deserved. In the middle of the box. First break point for Edmund.

:42:44.:43:10.

That was a bad mistake from Kyle Edmund. Played eight couple of

:43:11.:43:19.

really good points. Gets the break point down second serve and floats

:43:20.:43:22.

the backhand long. You come in with little confidence

:43:23.:43:38.

and to make an error like that, on your first break point. It just

:43:39.:43:44.

amplifies everything. Absolutely. Set point for Ward.

:43:45.:44:11.

Mum's Thursday is going rather well at the moment. -- mum's birthday.

:44:12.:44:28.

With his history coming into this, he will leave no stone unturned. No

:44:29.:44:36.

room for nerves will stop he lost his way a bit with the forehand of

:44:37.:44:44.

Kyle Edmund but the stats are impressive. That is low for Kyle

:44:45.:44:50.

Edmund. Total force errors about the same. Ward has more winners. He has

:44:51.:44:56.

been very aggressive. Any second serves he has attacks have been

:44:57.:45:01.

impressive. The good ratio on first service points one. Ward with 58%

:45:02.:45:08.

winning on his second serve point. That is a good ratio. It is very

:45:09.:45:15.

solid. He came into the net six times and won five out of six. You

:45:16.:45:20.

could see right from beginning Ward's hand was to put pressure on

:45:21.:45:27.

Edmund right away of his serve. I am going to get the first strike in

:45:28.:45:31.

that is what he did to create the first break. He is eager. He does

:45:32.:45:37.

not look nervous at all. He is enjoying the occasion. Their big

:45:38.:45:41.

start to the second set for Kyle Edmund. He must re-establish himself

:45:42.:45:45.

as he was nervous in the second set. In a way, this is the worst possible

:45:46.:46:14.

draw for Edmund. He is British but ranked 869. He is a set down.

:46:15.:46:27.

He has lost to Dolgopolov before. He has not won a set at Wimbledon. That

:46:28.:46:36.

is amazing. Eye-macro double faults have wanted

:46:37.:47:02.

him at times. He does not get many opportunities

:47:03.:47:21.

to use Hawk-Eye. He think of things with Ward, for

:47:22.:48:36.

example, playing in Tunisia in the futures event. He had to buy some

:48:37.:48:41.

balls to hit with. That is what he is used to. How he has embraced this

:48:42.:48:46.

today, everything else he has gone through, it is literally remarkable.

:48:47.:48:48.

It is. He is getting new balls every nine

:48:49.:49:06.

games. That was superb. The forehand was well measured. A good forehand.

:49:07.:49:17.

Economic ul. It looked solid. Got it back nice and early. Gets a very

:49:18.:49:26.

good follow-through. Always looking to move forward afterwards. A good

:49:27.:49:27.

instinct. He also has not been afraid to trade

:49:28.:49:58.

blows with the Kyle Edmund forehand. A big shot. A world-class shot.

:49:59.:50:31.

Never even won a match on tour, this man.

:50:32.:50:44.

He looks so calm. He has had a lot of injuries and other things. It is

:50:45.:50:52.

surprisingly new see how he plays he has not won on tour. He has the

:50:53.:50:56.

game, certainly. His father was terrific when he was

:50:57.:51:16.

interviewed. I really don't have any part to play. Helping and supporting

:51:17.:51:18.

and being a shoulder. The ball was called in. That was

:51:19.:51:50.

wishful thinking. I think he was just enjoying Hawk-Eye. I don't

:51:51.:51:54.

think he realises you only get three of them.

:51:55.:52:59.

They say the let's even out. I have never agreed with that. It has to be

:53:00.:53:13.

the most insincere apology in tennis. Sorry about that.

:53:14.:53:32.

That forehand is a monster. It keeps him in front. SUE BARKER: We will be

:53:33.:53:51.

right back with this match but there is plenty happening today in the

:53:52.:53:52.

Championships. Cockayne Akers has been out since

:53:53.:54:02.

2015. He even thought about retirement. He beat Milos Raonic.

:54:03.:54:16.

Del Potro has taken the opening set. On Court 12, as seed in trouble. No

:54:17.:54:23.

great surprise. Richard Gasquet is playing David Ferrer. He is 5-3 up

:54:24.:54:28.

in the opening set. You feel that will go the distance. That match is

:54:29.:54:33.

available on the red button or on the BBC Sport website. This was out

:54:34.:54:41.

on Court ten. Novak Djokovic is completing his warm up. Just as he

:54:42.:54:48.

did down at Eastbourne when he went to play their last week, signing

:54:49.:54:53.

autographs for having self is taken. He really does give back to the fans

:54:54.:54:58.

will stop he loves going to Eastbourne. He met seagulls for the

:54:59.:55:02.

first time. He said that was a little bit strange. We will see

:55:03.:55:07.

Novak later on on Centre Court. ' what number three. -- back to court

:55:08.:55:12.

number three. As we mentioned earlier, it is not

:55:13.:55:56.

the biggest serve but it is accurate and varied. Not a bad serve. He will

:55:57.:56:02.

not serve many aces with it. He can set himself up and take over the

:56:03.:56:04.

rally. Like that. He has settled down a bit. Two bad

:56:05.:56:59.

forehands in rainbow. -- a row. He is challenging the call. Another

:57:00.:57:59.

one for Hawk-Eye to look at. Not close enough. There is not a bad

:58:00.:58:11.

court here. It used to be the site of the old graveyard court, number

:58:12.:58:13.

to. The expression of changes with

:58:14.:58:28.

Edmund. -- never changes. The serve is not as big a weapon as

:58:29.:59:47.

his forehand but it is a very potent serve. He can get a lot of three

:59:48.:59:51.

points with it and build his game around it. Keeps his nose in front.

:59:52.:00:07.

Kyle Edmund 's coat shirts -- without a coach at the moment. Does

:00:08.:00:19.

the modern game become too reliant on coaches? Do they lose

:00:20.:00:22.

responsibility for themselves in matchplay? They do. More so on the

:00:23.:00:29.

women's circuit. The coaches are allowed to come on court. I think

:00:30.:00:34.

the reliance is even more. That is the case. You have to know what is

:00:35.:00:41.

in yourself. With some might Kyle Edmund, he has weapons in his game.

:00:42.:00:46.

What he does not have at the moment is Plan B or plan C. He'd does not

:00:47.:00:53.

defend well. He is good when he is aggressive and on but, particularly

:00:54.:00:58.

when he is losing matches, so many places he looks brittle. You

:00:59.:01:04.

concentrate on your weapons because that is what will take you further

:01:05.:01:09.

but you have to focus on other things of the game. He needs to

:01:10.:01:13.

learn to defend better and have more of a presence on the court. It is

:01:14.:01:18.

not that he does not try in matches but he seems to rack set sometimes

:01:19.:01:23.

when a result is not going his way and he is being outplayed rather

:01:24.:01:28.

than trying something different. What about expressing himself? That

:01:29.:01:32.

is what I mean, presents. Looking like he is 50 in world or higher. He

:01:33.:01:40.

does have a bit of a step to him in this set. There is a bit of a

:01:41.:01:44.

different about him. He is looking like he is ready. In their first

:01:45.:01:49.

set, he did not give it away but he was very tight at the beginning.

:01:50.:02:12.

That was better, that sliced backhand back. Got there nice and

:02:13.:02:20.

early and got it back deep. Good start to the game for him.

:02:21.:04:25.

Brilliant. What a way it get the break.

:04:26.:04:56.

He did well here. An excellent full cross-court. He stayed well on that

:04:57.:05:06.

one. That's what you want to see, getting pumped up.

:05:07.:05:13.

! Few have tried. Tim Henman went through that year, didn't he.

:05:14.:05:56.

Andre Agassi keeping an eye on this. Trying to get out of the sun, mind.

:05:57.:06:02.

Got to put a hat on. Novak Djokovic is in this quarter.

:06:03.:07:23.

Is it Agassi's observations, homework?

:07:24.:08:55.

A man interested in the right there, Leon Smith. In charge of British

:08:56.:09:04.

tennis and Davis Cup captain. He is trying to help Kyle, of course but

:09:05.:09:10.

all-British in this match, he will take a further seat back to have a

:09:11.:09:16.

neutral look. He has a job on his hands at the moment. If Alexander

:09:17.:09:21.

Ward continues with the form he has, he will be looking for a Davis Cup

:09:22.:09:27.

place, why not? It is wide open now on the British team. Obviously Andy

:09:28.:09:33.

and some matches he is not going to play but after that, it's quite wide

:09:34.:09:38.

open if you take Kyle and after that, there's a lot of players vying

:09:39.:09:44.

for a spot. Scotty Lloyd, obviously coming in to take over at the LTA in

:09:45.:09:49.

January next year. A few changes coming.

:09:50.:09:58.

Not too sure about his shot selection there, Kyle Edmund. A big

:09:59.:12:19.

point. He was off balance and tried for a winner down the

:12:20.:12:41.

Just gone off the boil in the last two or three games, Ward. Just

:12:42.:12:49.

making a lot more errors now. I guess that's the difference between

:12:50.:12:53.

Futures when you can get away with that, but not here. Exactly. You

:12:54.:12:55.

have to keep that level going. He hung in there. A bit shaky at the

:12:56.:13:02.

start of that game. Let's see how Edmund copes with

:13:03.:13:41.

serving out this second set. A few hiccups, didn't he, Ward, serving

:13:42.:13:44.

out the first. Well, he really pulled down on that

:13:45.:14:13.

one. He'll need to take a little bit of time after that. Just get

:14:14.:14:18.

yourself ready again, visualise where you are going to serve this

:14:19.:14:20.

ball. Good depth here from Edmund in this

:14:21.:14:37.

rally. ! The pressure he was putting on

:14:38.:16:38.

Edmund there, close to the baseline, taking the ball on. A good point

:16:39.:16:45.

there for Ward. He needs a good serve here, doesn't he? He certainly

:16:46.:16:48.

does. Oh - that forehand there from

:16:49.:17:06.

Edmund, so much spin on the ball that it slowed it up and gave Ward a

:17:07.:17:12.

lot of time on that passing shot. Really should have made that.

:17:13.:17:29.

66 minutes in the all-British affair, and it is 1-1 sets. SUE

:17:30.:18:24.

BARKER: So this will turn into an endurance test. We will be back with

:18:25.:18:31.

the match in a moment. Look around the grounds who is this on the

:18:32.:18:34.

practise court? That looks like uncle Tony so there is Rafa. Looking

:18:35.:18:39.

very relaxed. He had an amazing French Open, winning a 10th title.

:18:40.:18:46.

Losing just 35 games. And he looked impressive on the grass here

:18:47.:18:51.

yesterday, losing just six games. Rafa in form and enjoying himself

:18:52.:18:55.

out on the practise courts. He is certainly a danger.

:18:56.:19:01.

Venus Williams on the practise court today. Following her emotional press

:19:02.:19:05.

conference yesterday when she talked about the car accident that happened

:19:06.:19:10.

last month. I can't believe how she is coping with all of that and

:19:11.:19:16.

playing here but she is a contender in this very open ladies

:19:17.:19:19.

Championship. A day off today. She'll be back on court tomorrow.

:19:20.:19:26.

Sitting there with her mum, who is always courtside with her. Such

:19:27.:19:33.

family support for Venus and Serena, wherever they play and here is Jo

:19:34.:19:42.

Konta. And how impressive she was yesterday, winning her match. It was

:19:43.:19:48.

a player she lost to at the French Open. No wonder she is smiling.

:19:49.:19:52.

Looking very much at home on the grass and as we talk about this very

:19:53.:19:57.

open ladies Championship. Will we have a British winner? She is

:19:58.:20:01.

capable of it. She has had a terrific year and playing very well.

:20:02.:20:07.

So that's Jo Konta who will be back in action again tomorrow. So that's

:20:08.:20:12.

what is happening out there. Now back to the match. COMMENTATOR: One

:20:13.:20:21.

break was enough to secure that last set. So now Ward needs to

:20:22.:20:26.

re-establish himself. That was a little bit closer than he

:20:27.:21:23.

intended. The width of the forehand there, the pace, a low ball he had

:21:24.:21:31.

to go up and attack, Kyle Edmund and you can see with the grip change, he

:21:32.:21:39.

got the racket head under the ball so well there and that extreme whip

:21:40.:21:41.

brought it up nice and high. You can see the difference, the

:21:42.:22:08.

weight of shot from Kyle Edmund is taking his toll a little bit on

:22:09.:22:15.

Ward. The depth from the middle of the second set onwards, he is

:22:16.:22:20.

starting to hit the ball very close to the line. Always pressure on Ward

:22:21.:22:22.

now. He is starting to relax now. Well,

:22:23.:22:39.

actually it is impressive because, as you said at the beginning and you

:22:40.:22:48.

are absolutely right, there is a lot of pressure on him on this match. He

:22:49.:22:54.

hasn't won at Wimbledon. He is supposed to win this match bishops

:22:55.:22:57.

the rankings, comfortably and Alexander Ward is a gritty player.

:22:58.:23:01.

He has come through qualifier. It is not a nice match to play in some

:23:02.:23:07.

ways for Kyle Edmund. I don't think he handled the first set well. But

:23:08.:23:13.

now he is on top and looking like he is enjoying himself a little bit.

:23:14.:23:19.

Having a bit more fun out here. A whole different body language.

:23:20.:24:44.

He has really lost his way at the moment. Eight points lost in this

:24:45.:24:53.

set. The forehand that was so good in the first set now is not finding

:24:54.:25:02.

its target. He has lost a bit of confidence. What does he have to do?

:25:03.:25:07.

Go back it basics, much would the ball, keep feet moving, go back to

:25:08.:25:11.

the beginning? Make the margins smaller, don't go quite as much

:25:12.:25:15.

until he gets the rhythm back. Don't get negative. Still hit the ball

:25:16.:25:22.

hard but don't go for as much. Don't go for the lines as much as he has

:25:23.:25:28.

been doing, until he gets confidence back.

:25:29.:25:34.

Three out of five is a very long journey, something else he has no

:25:35.:25:44.

experience of. Ye, ebbs and flow and the best of five-set matches,

:25:45.:25:46.

sometimes your form can drop a bit. Oh, I thought for one minute he was

:25:47.:26:37.

going to full-length drive on that one. Had it been Dimitrov or Boris

:26:38.:26:44.

Becker, this would've been a full-length dive, right here, now

:26:45.:26:48.

they would've gone for a full-length dive. Come on, go. Oh, no. Did he

:26:49.:26:55.

think about it? I don't think he wanted to dirty the whites. He

:26:56.:26:59.

wanted to keep nice and clean. You know. It's Wimbledon.

:27:00.:27:08.

Lovely. He He struggled with that. He was getting caught, hitting it

:27:09.:27:21.

late. And two big backhands in this game. That was superb.

:27:22.:27:44.

Slipped. Very deep in the court there. It's just the energy levels

:27:45.:27:53.

have changed so much between the two. Certainly at the beginning Ward

:27:54.:27:58.

was the one that was sort of taking the ball on, close to the baseline,

:27:59.:28:03.

being aggressive. Now Edmund has taken over. Another break point.

:28:04.:28:14.

Four games in a row for Edmund. Double break. Another clenched fist.

:28:15.:28:30.

If he makes those improvements with his mind and the defence and so on,

:28:31.:28:39.

how good do you think Kyle Edmund could be? Well, I think he's got, if

:28:40.:28:45.

you look at the technical side, the way he hits the ball, I think you

:28:46.:28:52.

could say he gets top 20. I think he's got that - the shell, the large

:28:53.:28:59.

part of his game but there's so much involved in it and if the mind -

:29:00.:29:05.

that has to be, that's if not the biggest weapon, it is certainly

:29:06.:29:09.

right up there. The mental side of the game, you know, the fight,

:29:10.:29:13.

knowing when to change your game, win at all costs, dig deep. Never

:29:14.:29:17.

accept the fact that you are going to be beaten, all that stuff, the

:29:18.:29:23.

defensive side, it is huge, it is not easy to improve. And he has to

:29:24.:29:28.

improve that big time, to go with the big boys. But game-wise,

:29:29.:29:32.

technically looking at the way he hits the ball, he's potentially top

:29:33.:29:37.

20. But there's a lot more in it than that.

:29:38.:29:49.

Can you, imagine, though, if he can win this match, what a relief it is

:29:50.:29:58.

going to be for him after his Wimbledon record. I mean, it is a

:29:59.:30:04.

whole different ball game if he can get a win under his belt here.

:30:05.:30:09.

Sometimes that only takes one shot to bring back confidence.

:30:10.:30:11.

Absolutely. Let alone a win. So much more aggressive now but

:30:12.:30:27.

aggressive in the right way. Not wildly aggressive. This is

:30:28.:30:28.

controlled aggression. Called out by the umpire, not the

:30:29.:30:44.

line judge. Suddenly, the rankings look about

:30:45.:31:13.

right. Exactly. Amazing how he has turned it around. All credit to him.

:31:14.:31:17.

It certainly did not look this way in the beginning. I was critical,

:31:18.:31:25.

the way he was walking around the way he was conducting himself out on

:31:26.:31:29.

the court with no presence that he has changed it around. A lot of

:31:30.:31:31.

credit. He's suddenly looks really weary. He

:31:32.:32:19.

does. You are right. That is the sort of presence he has

:32:20.:32:56.

to have. That is the sort of game Kyle Edmund has to play, a big game.

:32:57.:33:43.

Still nothing happening for board. He lost the last five games. Three

:33:44.:34:00.

from four on the break points, Edmund.

:34:01.:34:31.

The crowd have gone away from the match a little bit. There is an air

:34:32.:34:39.

of inevitability about it at the moment.

:34:40.:34:45.

That will get them going a little bit.

:34:46.:35:03.

John, this man had so many injuries. Ankle problems, stress fractures.

:35:04.:35:12.

Knees surgery. This time last year he got his ranking up to a height of

:35:13.:35:20.

242. Then he found out he had problems with tendons in his wrist.

:35:21.:35:26.

He has not had the best of luck. He is such a hard worker. He is a

:35:27.:36:00.

grinder. He puts 100% into it every day, whenever he can. When you have

:36:01.:36:01.

a catalogue of injuries, trying to make the breakthrough, going all

:36:02.:36:02.

around the world to scrap for points and your body breaking down... He

:36:03.:36:08.

has the game. He will go up. He just looks a bit tired, a bit flat in the

:36:09.:36:13.

last few games. I am not sure if it is just the accumulation of the

:36:14.:36:17.

qualifying and all the press and stuff that has gone with it which

:36:18.:36:21.

has zapped his energy. I do not know.

:36:22.:36:30.

Edmund has to-macro challenges remaining. I am not sure what he was

:36:31.:37:05.

trying to do. He came in fast and was trying to hit a winner down the

:37:06.:37:11.

line. He cannot afford to let the line wonder, even with a break of

:37:12.:37:13.

serve. That is the best shot he has hit for

:37:14.:38:02.

a long while. He has still only lost five points

:38:03.:38:41.

and first-served, 32 from 37 now. It is impressive. Just over half his

:38:42.:38:45.

first serves going in. A change of balls. 23 Celsius today,

:38:46.:39:05.

not much of a breeze. Perfect playing conditions. A bit cloudy as

:39:06.:39:12.

well, which is also good for the players. They don't like sunshine

:39:13.:39:21.

beaming out of them. Serving issues when that is glaring at you. This is

:39:22.:39:32.

almost perfect. The new balls, Ward serving to stay in the set. 1-5.

:39:33.:40:59.

Well done, a good hold. Edmund is going to have the serve out for the

:41:00.:41:11.

set. And we will be back to see if Edmund

:41:12.:41:15.

can serve out the set. Plenty is happening here, beginning on Centre

:41:16.:41:19.

Court and Court Number One. This is vice chair's runner up Angelique

:41:20.:41:24.

Kerber leading the way, the first match on Centre Court in the absence

:41:25.:41:28.

of the defending champion Serena Williams. She is the top seed

:41:29.:41:34.

against the qualifier from the United States, Irina Falconi. So if

:41:35.:41:38.

you want to watch this match, you can do, it is on the red button.

:41:39.:41:42.

Hoping not for the same fake as the French Open when she lost in the

:41:43.:41:49.

opening round. This is Thanasi Kokkinakis who has taken the second

:41:50.:41:52.

set 6-3 against Juan Martin del Potro. So many injuries, it is great

:41:53.:41:57.

to see him playing well again. That match has a long way to go, the

:41:58.:42:03.

featured match on the red button. And David Foret is battling on, he

:42:04.:42:07.

was ranked as high as three in the world, that has dropped to 39 --

:42:08.:42:14.

David Ferrer. He is two sets to love up against Richard Gasquet. And last

:42:15.:42:23.

year's runner up Milos Raonic starting his match, not the best

:42:24.:42:27.

year but that serve will win him some quick points. Available on the

:42:28.:42:30.

red button and on the BBC website. But back we go.

:42:31.:43:33.

UMPIRE: Challenging the call to the right of baseline.

:43:34.:45:34.

The depth on the first backhand and this one is excellent. Extended so

:45:35.:46:54.

well on that shot. Since losing their first set, Kyle

:46:55.:47:53.

Edmund has conceded just five games and moves into a to-macro sets to

:47:54.:48:03.

one lead. A couple of results to bring new in the meantime. Zverev is

:48:04.:48:18.

through. He won in straight sets. He put out Andy Murray at the

:48:19.:48:23.

Australian Open. His brother will be in action later today. That is

:48:24.:48:28.

something he has in common with Andy Murray, having a brother on the

:48:29.:48:32.

tour. A fine win in straight sets for him. The 24th seed is also

:48:33.:48:44.

through. She is a former quarterfinalist. She put out Jo

:48:45.:48:50.

Konta at Edgbaston. Now she is coached by Pat Cash. Pat is in her

:48:51.:48:55.

corner. There he is watching. I am sure he will be absolutely delighted

:48:56.:48:57.

with that result. A lot of matches going on but on

:48:58.:49:10.

Court Number 10 we have seen over Djokovic play. Now there is a big

:49:11.:49:16.

crowd around because Roger Federer is out there. He missed the

:49:17.:49:20.

clay-court season Brett comes in here with some grass court play. --

:49:21.:49:30.

but comes in here. He is many people's favourite for the title.

:49:31.:49:36.

You would not bet against him. He has only lost two matches. He will

:49:37.:49:50.

be on Centre Court later today for the back is what is happening

:49:51.:49:51.

elsewhere. He can ill afford to lose the first

:49:52.:50:33.

game in this set, Ward. He knows the pressure that is being put on him. A

:50:34.:50:38.

worrying time for him. He has to somehow dig in and hold this service

:50:39.:50:40.

game. He has just gone right off the boil.

:50:41.:51:00.

45 minutes, he is not the same player he was. He seems to have lost

:51:01.:51:03.

that sparked. Is it his turn, Ward, to be

:51:04.:51:30.

bellowing out, come on, or do something to get hyped up? He is

:51:31.:51:39.

always walking around, attacking the ball. The second serve doing some

:51:40.:51:43.

damage. At the moment it is just flat. That is better.

:51:44.:51:56.

He must give everybody here, most importantly his opponent, the body

:51:57.:52:03.

language that I am just going to fight like I have never fought

:52:04.:52:05.

before. It is a very comfortable scoreboard

:52:06.:52:45.

now. You can see the difference, even when they walk to the chair. It

:52:46.:52:51.

is so apparent. I am sure Ward does not realise that that he is now

:52:52.:52:59.

walking about the speed I ran. Very slowly trudging. He did not sit down

:53:00.:53:05.

there but it is all sort of laboured. Edmund is just sort of

:53:06.:53:12.

skipping away to get ready for the next point.

:53:13.:54:27.

That is what he was doing earlier on. Second serve, he was aggressive,

:54:28.:54:38.

but in a good way. He was not taking wild swings at the ball. He was not

:54:39.:54:45.

getting ahead in the rally for a while.

:54:46.:54:52.

It is a runaway really, isn't it? It is. It has become so easy now for

:54:53.:56:34.

Edmund, dictating play. So much more pace, controlling the points. You

:56:35.:56:40.

never know what will happen in the best of a five set match.

:56:41.:56:53.

That ball for Ward, it looked like the legs were weary. Getting out

:56:54.:57:04.

wide to the forehand in the middle of the net. No spring.

:57:05.:57:15.

He was busy after losing in prequalifying. Ward was arranging

:57:16.:57:22.

all the tournaments. He got the call that he got a wildcard into

:57:23.:57:27.

qualities and had to change his plans.

:57:28.:57:37.

He was not quick getting out to the ball. He is playing completely

:57:38.:57:47.

within himself stop he is on cruise control. He has done so well to turn

:57:48.:57:56.

it around so quickly. He did so well at the beginning.

:57:57.:58:05.

He was so nervous he was struggling to breathe. Coaches talk about that

:58:06.:58:11.

a lot. Deep breaths all the time. Four from ten on the break points

:58:12.:58:40.

now. He is on the verge now of his first

:58:41.:59:15.

match win at Wimbledon, Kyle Edmund. If he gets this done, it will do the

:59:16.:59:35.

power of good. What a relief him if he gets this win under his belt at

:59:36.:59:40.

them was in full all of a sudden he will love the tournament. I am sure

:59:41.:59:46.

he would say, I love playing at Wimbledon you lose four first rounds

:59:47.:59:49.

in a row and it is not your favourite Tuan and, whatever you

:59:50.:59:55.

say. Suddenly you win a match and love this place. -- your favourite

:59:56.:00:04.

tournament. That was a superb backhand by anybody's standards. He

:00:05.:00:09.

has hit a few of those today. Got good extension will stop a lot of

:00:10.:00:15.

power on that side. It is not just his forehand, that is his big weapon

:00:16.:00:20.

but the backhand as well, when that is on, it is dangerous.

:00:21.:00:31.

Kyle Edmund has never shied away from hard work. Andy Murray has been

:00:32.:00:39.

generous with his time of season training with him. I think the first

:00:40.:00:41.

time, it was, oh, that training! It is a shame the wheels have come

:00:42.:01:06.

off the way they have for Ward, so promising in that opening set. Yes.

:01:07.:02:07.

When you get to 40-0, the great players good at securing that game

:02:08.:02:26.

and they almost treat the point like a break point against them. Great

:02:27.:02:30.

players are greedy with every point, every point is valuable, no matter

:02:31.:02:34.

what the score is. Getting to that finishing touches

:02:35.:02:46.

time. Mr Ward has two challenges

:02:47.:03:02.

remaining. Well done! I love that rally! A

:03:03.:03:59.

crowd pleaser. Yes, the other way. Still makes the volley. Here he

:04:00.:04:06.

goes. I'm going to charge over the other side. No, the ball is that

:04:07.:04:09.

way, OK. He did well to stop that ball like

:04:10.:05:21.

that, it wasn't easy, there was not much pace on the ball to begin with.

:05:22.:05:25.

A good approach. It is a fabulous hold from love- 40.

:05:26.:06:40.

On the scoreboard. I guess one of the big things on his

:06:41.:07:03.

wish list is being injury free for a pretty good run of time. Exactly, it

:07:04.:07:09.

is tough enough in his position grinding out these challenges,

:07:10.:07:14.

futures. Just trying to claw back some points to get his ranking up.

:07:15.:07:20.

And then your body breaks down with obscure or injuries and things. To

:07:21.:07:24.

put it mildly, it is frustrating. Bad enough if you are a top player,

:07:25.:07:29.

but you have security, he has no security. He is literally playing to

:07:30.:07:35.

pay his bills. It is tough, it is not easy. He doesn't have the

:07:36.:07:41.

luxury, his career earnings is $189,000, to take a busier with him

:07:42.:07:46.

and to maintain his body. So he will become more injury prone as a result

:07:47.:07:52.

anyway -- to take a physiotherapist. Yes, this Wimbledon is a gift. He

:07:53.:07:56.

lost in the previous qualifier, now he is in the first round, he can pay

:07:57.:08:01.

some bills. Some expenses for the rest of the year. It is not easy.

:08:02.:08:16.

Edmund, 4-1 up in the fourth with a double break after one hour and 15

:08:17.:08:19.

-- 59 minutes. Challenging.

:08:20.:09:09.

UMPIRE: The ball was called out. APPLAUSE. That is a great call! You

:09:10.:09:33.

have got Hawk-Eye and 2020 on the line. Unbelievable! Smiles all

:09:34.:09:41.

round. Back to where he was in the first

:09:42.:10:18.

set on that point. That is what has been missing. Controlled aggression.

:10:19.:10:26.

Good length here and he steps in, he cracks the ball away. It would be

:10:27.:10:34.

some comeback, wouldn't it? If you don't hit your ground stroke

:10:35.:11:31.

in the right area playing the Kyle Edmund, if it is not deep enough and

:11:32.:11:36.

he takes over with that forehand, it is a big weapon. That was a huge

:11:37.:11:39.

forehand he hit. A game away from his first win at

:11:40.:11:54.

Wimbledon. How much better has his return of

:11:55.:13:03.

serve been after that first serve? It has picked up in the last set and

:13:04.:13:08.

a half and his depth has been so much better as well, Kyle Edmund.

:13:09.:13:18.

It is an amazing angle. Edmund is pretty confident this one is wide.

:13:19.:13:32.

He is right. You have got to love Hawk-Eye, what an innovation! He

:13:33.:13:52.

stood tall on that and here he is. With three match points.

:13:53.:14:27.

Edmund wins his very first match at Wimbledon. Just of the two hours

:14:28.:14:37.

against a man around 869. At British start for the British number two.

:14:38.:14:42.

The fairy tale of the qualifier Alexander Ward comes to an end. The

:14:43.:14:47.

story maybe it's just beginning to for Edmund. This is a very fine

:14:48.:14:52.

performance at a dodgy start and he was on a hiding to nothing Kyle

:14:53.:14:55.

Edmund going up against another fellow Brit with a ranking in the

:14:56.:15:01.

800s. Everybody expects him to win, he has not win a match at Wimbledon.

:15:02.:15:06.

A lot of pressure, he started badly, a set down, but he had the faith in

:15:07.:15:11.

his ability to come back. Is game improved. He started being more

:15:12.:15:15.

aggressive in the right way, his serve going better, his backhand

:15:16.:15:19.

down the line was awesome. This will do him a power of good. He's not the

:15:20.:15:24.

most emotional chap but I bet inside, he is saying, well done. We

:15:25.:15:31.

have got that monkey off the back, let's go forwards. Your final

:15:32.:15:34.

thoughts for Alexander Ward? A great effort, he just ran out of gas and

:15:35.:15:39.

he looked a bit flat and is tired. He has made a bit of money now and

:15:40.:15:45.

hopefully he can get back out on the circuit and push his ranking up.

:15:46.:15:50.

He's got a lot of game. He works hard. He is a difficult player to

:15:51.:15:55.

beat. But today, he just ran out of steam, understandable. He can

:15:56.:16:01.

certainly afford to buy his mother a birthday present now! Yes, about

:16:02.:16:06.

time! Not the complete celebration she would have hoped for but a

:16:07.:16:10.

special day for the Ward family. Absolutely.

:16:11.:16:19.

APPLAUSE. A big hand for this all British

:16:20.:16:33.

affair. Edmund, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, he must be thrilled.

:16:34.:16:39.

After that first set, how proud you of the fightback and your first win

:16:40.:16:45.

at Wimbledon? It is nice to get my first win. The first set was tricky.

:16:46.:16:51.

Even the first point, he came out and really attacked me. After I got

:16:52.:16:58.

broke, it was very even in the first set, but he had the upper hand with

:16:59.:17:02.

the break. So it is just trying to find ways. The slow return the

:17:03.:17:06.

momentum the difficult bit is turning it and once I had it, it

:17:07.:17:10.

became a bit easier for me to read the game. Well done to Alex.

:17:11.:17:17.

Qualifying. He had a long injury layout. It is good to see nice guys

:17:18.:17:25.

like he is doing well. I'm happy for me that I win but unfortunately for

:17:26.:17:29.

him, he has to lose. What is the hardest part about playing somebody

:17:30.:17:33.

you know so well and who knows you so well like Alex was the mark I

:17:34.:17:37.

don't know. I used to train quite a bit with him at Roehampton but he

:17:38.:17:41.

has been recently in Barcelona training. I have not seen much of

:17:42.:17:47.

him. It is difficult. And we both, our game styles maybe would be more

:17:48.:17:53.

suited to clay. I have never seen him play on grass because I have

:17:54.:17:58.

always been on a hard court. It is difficult and he win three matches

:17:59.:18:01.

in qualifying so I knew he would feel good. How important was this

:18:02.:18:05.

victory for you in the context of the year you are having and how hard

:18:06.:18:09.

you are working? It is good, just nice to get the win at Wimbledon.

:18:10.:18:19.

The home Grand Slam. It is one of those dreams, the tournament is, and

:18:20.:18:25.

it has not been a good tournament for me in recent years. It is nice

:18:26.:18:29.

to get the win. I only live up the road now so it is really local for

:18:30.:18:33.

me, so it is nice to just get the win. Huge congratulations, well

:18:34.:18:37.

done, Kyle. Thanks a lot. Yes, he will sleep a

:18:38.:18:44.

lot better this evening, Kyle Edmund. It could release him and it

:18:45.:18:49.

could be the player we have seen do well at the US Open and the third

:18:50.:18:53.

round of the French Open with big wins against big names. Potentially

:18:54.:19:00.

a big name next, Gael Monfils, the 15th seed. But on his day, he will

:19:01.:19:04.

give anybody a run for their money. If he continues the form he showed

:19:05.:19:07.

after the first set, he was really impressive.

:19:08.:19:11.

All sides of his game working well, the server we expect, the forehand

:19:12.:19:17.

winner expect, but I thought it was the backhand that was amazing and

:19:18.:19:21.

the length of the ball in the last three sets. A lot of credit, this

:19:22.:19:25.

was a difficult match for him mentally. A lot of pressure on him

:19:26.:19:37.

and he came through well. The first time he has had to shake hands with

:19:38.:19:46.

a win at SW19. Well done, Kyle Edmund. He is true in four sets, in

:19:47.:19:53.

two hours and three minutes. -- he is through. SUE BARKER: that

:19:54.:20:01.

will be a huge relief to him and he could play Gael Monfils if he comes

:20:02.:20:04.

through his opener. That is core to number three. Plenty of tennis here

:20:05.:20:10.

today and on BBC Two, we will go to Court Number One to see last year's

:20:11.:20:14.

runner up Milos Raonic, big serve once again this year, he is facing

:20:15.:20:22.

Jan-Lennard Struff, of Germany. On serve in this opening set. So let's

:20:23.:20:25.

join Jamie Baker alongside Andrew Castle.

:20:26.:20:30.

Well, that is a nice time to come up with a massive serve down the

:20:31.:20:38.

middle. Six foot five and 135 malls per hour, he is no slouch. -- mph.

:20:39.:20:49.

There it was a game, a fourth ace for him. 40 minutes had been played

:20:50.:20:57.

here. There have been break points. Struff has saved all five that he

:20:58.:21:03.

has faced. And the one break point but he faced. I should say Raonic,

:21:04.:21:10.

as we looked at his serve, he opened the match with 141, 139, 135. A

:21:11.:21:18.

second serve ace at 119. Look at this delivery. It hardly comes as a

:21:19.:21:25.

surprise to anybody, of course, a semifinalist at Wimbledon three

:21:26.:21:30.

years ago, and last year a finalist at Queen's where he was a point or

:21:31.:21:35.

two away, losing to the same man both times, Andy Murray.

:21:36.:22:30.

Nicely done. Milos Raonic just hitting the ball into the Open

:22:31.:22:45.

space. Quick cold. Threshold. Jamie Baker, why when people are talking

:22:46.:22:48.

about who is possible Wimbledon champion this year it is the name of

:22:49.:22:53.

Milos Raonic not come up? I think there has probably been a couple of

:22:54.:22:57.

things this year, a couple of injuries this year, he has not been

:22:58.:23:01.

quite as consistent maybe in previous years. But we can see from

:23:02.:23:04.

his form he will always be a contender here. But I think the

:23:05.:23:09.

biggest factor in why there is not much chat is everybody is talking

:23:10.:23:14.

about the resurgence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and what will

:23:15.:23:18.

happen in terms of Murray and Jock itch, will they get back into 50?

:23:19.:23:22.

When you have analysed all that, you think about Milos Raonic -- Novak

:23:23.:23:29.

Djokovic. The biggest casualty in the men's draw is Stan Wawrinka. He

:23:30.:23:32.

did not look like he wanted to be out there against young Daniil

:23:33.:23:38.

Medvedev, serving towards the end and losing a bit of heart. But Milos

:23:39.:23:45.

Raonic at Queen's lost to eight -- Thanasi Kokkinakis on the same day.

:23:46.:23:48.

They took many casualties in that tournament. But here at Wimbledon,

:23:49.:24:00.

Jan-Lennard Struff certainly playing somebody you could win the

:24:01.:24:02.

tournament, 5-6. That was there, wasn't it? The first

:24:03.:24:30.

meeting between these two players. Struff is 27. He is ranked world

:24:31.:25:04.

number 53, as high as 49. Playing near a career high. He is confident.

:25:05.:25:13.

This is the marginally more difficult game for the right-hander

:25:14.:25:16.

to serve at this time of day, if you look at the shadows. Neatly done. We

:25:17.:25:26.

are going to go to tie-break to decide the first set. Struff will

:25:27.:25:31.

take that. Considering he has saved all the points.

:25:32.:26:08.

A good start for Raonic, the ever reliable big first serve.

:26:09.:27:05.

Excellent footwork. Keeping himself to the side of the ball on arrival.

:27:06.:27:19.

Easing into the court, the pressure reverts to Raonic.

:27:20.:28:54.

That is a way, there is a big let's go from Raonic as Struff misses Long

:28:55.:29:03.

on the backhand side. And he will feel the pressure from Raonic at the

:29:04.:29:10.

other end. He has win 30 consecutive points on his own serve. If you go

:29:11.:29:14.

down a mini-break against a player like Raonic or John Isner, you can

:29:15.:29:22.

go down pretty quick. That is his father in the light blue shirt, an

:29:23.:29:25.

engineer by trade, watching his boy, Raonic.

:29:26.:29:53.

That was a real chance to accelerate in that tie-break. The second serve

:29:54.:30:00.

was right into the forehand slot of Raonic, he will be disappointed in

:30:01.:30:01.

that. Raonic trying to snap a streak of

:30:02.:30:34.

tie-break losses. Against Roger Federer in the semifinal, and Andy

:30:35.:30:36.

Murray. Heavy return straight down the

:30:37.:31:01.

middle. Perfectly legitimate option. He was a moment of truth after 52

:31:02.:32:22.

minutes. That was a bit of a battle, wasn't

:32:23.:33:33.

it? From both players. Raonic wins the tie-break. A big showed from

:33:34.:33:50.

Raonic, he's taken the first set. Over on Centre Court the runner-up

:33:51.:33:55.

is opening proceedings, Angelique Kerber. She taken the first set. If

:33:56.:33:59.

you want to watch that match you can.

:34:00.:34:03.

Over on Court Number Two, one Martin Del Plata has taken this.

:34:04.:34:16.

It is good to see him back on the court.

:34:17.:34:33.

Also playing is Ferrer. He got a very nasty blister on his right

:34:34.:34:51.

heel. Such experience here. I have a feeling that one will go on for some

:34:52.:34:53.

time. That's happening on Court number 12.

:34:54.:35:02.

Lovely weather at Wimbledon. No sign of rain. Plenty happening on the

:35:03.:35:08.

second day of the Championships on Centre Court later, where we have

:35:09.:35:14.

got Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to look forward to. Let's rejoin

:35:15.:35:17.

Court Number One. How often do we see this at the

:35:18.:36:20.

start of a set? Straightaway. A chance for Raonic.

:36:21.:36:35.

Is that OK? Three break points, Raonic did particularly well on the

:36:36.:36:47.

break of serve. It caught the service line and slowed up. He

:36:48.:36:55.

hasn't broken yet, he's had five chances.

:36:56.:37:25.

He has a nine match losing streak at these major championships and has

:37:26.:37:32.

not picked up a win since the US Open in 2014.

:37:33.:38:05.

That's a mistake, and Raonic has the breakthrough. That is to go along

:38:06.:38:17.

with the tie-breaker. It's the harsh nature of the scoring

:38:18.:38:28.

system. Seven minutes ago he was getting ready to start a tie-break

:38:29.:38:33.

and before you know it, you are a set and a break down, compounded by

:38:34.:38:41.

the fact that he knows his opportunities to break Raonic are

:38:42.:38:43.

going to be very far and few between. Raonic's average speed is

:38:44.:38:48.

130 mph. Remember, he won 14 of the last 15

:38:49.:39:10.

points towards the end of that set on his own serve. So Struff is up

:39:11.:39:12.

against it. That one had a lot more in it. When

:39:13.:40:44.

he played the first forehand he must have been six feet out of the

:40:45.:40:47.

tramline. He played himself into trouble.

:40:48.:41:33.

Does not seem to be going very easily for him, this first service

:41:34.:41:43.

game. Fen-3-mac has been here before.

:41:44.:41:48.

That was unlucky, he read when it was going, but it caught the line.

:41:49.:42:06.

So often leads to a mis-hit. That's a very intelligent forehand,

:42:07.:42:51.

just use the angle. You could see the spin taking it away from his

:42:52.:42:53.

opponent with every single meter. Three times a Grand Slam doubles

:42:54.:43:33.

champion. Working with me -- working with Raonic.

:43:34.:44:18.

Break points saved, and the break of serve backed up as Raonic extends

:44:19.:44:27.

his lead. Quarterfinalist at the Australian

:44:28.:44:40.

Open this year. Lost to Rafael Nadal, who played a magnificent

:44:41.:44:49.

semifinal against Grigor Dimitrov. Pretty handy five set final against

:44:50.:44:51.

Roger Federer as well. Dangerous times for the German

:44:52.:45:02.

player now. This could get away quickly. Opening

:45:03.:45:40.

his shoulders of it. He is not short of power.

:45:41.:46:50.

Four straight points and two break of serve. He is cruising.

:46:51.:47:00.

Quite a lax game once again. He is ranked 53 in the world but he cannot

:47:01.:47:11.

get the job done. It is hard to understand why. Whether it is

:47:12.:47:23.

self-inflicted or whether it is the knowledge of what's coming down the

:47:24.:47:27.

other end, first-served percent below 50%. Always having to fight

:47:28.:47:38.

for every single point. Raonic born in Montenegrin but moved

:47:39.:47:53.

to Canada when he was young. His tennis is made in Canada, who has

:47:54.:48:00.

done pretty well with male tennis players at the moment.

:48:01.:49:29.

Another tidy game. We've mentioned that he's struggled in the majors.

:49:30.:49:47.

He is a quality player. It would be nice if he got a decent draw now and

:49:48.:49:57.

again. He last to Dominic Thiem in the Australian Open. And Tomas

:49:58.:50:06.

Berdych in the French. Those sort of drawers, you can do nothing about.

:50:07.:50:22.

It does show that there is a little bit of luck. To get that in

:50:23.:50:27.

consecutive slams is bad luck. Raonic in control of this first

:50:28.:51:25.

round attack. Roger Federer has stopped doing his sneak attack. I

:51:26.:51:32.

once asked him what it is like to have his experience. He said

:51:33.:51:39.

sometimes I wish I did not have it, sometimes I want to play like an

:51:40.:51:43.

18-year-old who does not know what he's doing but just plays for the

:51:44.:51:48.

joy to win. I am not going to lose too much sleep feeling sorry for

:51:49.:51:59.

him! You played on this court with him.

:52:00.:52:15.

This court is like an egg with its top taken off, a new roof is going

:52:16.:52:18.

on soon. Does it feel like a big court? It

:52:19.:52:34.

does. It used to have the roof and you could not actually see the last

:52:35.:52:39.

few seats so it felt bigger than it was.

:52:40.:53:03.

It was a massive industrial site all winter and they just packed away.

:53:04.:53:08.

They've somehow made it presentable to this tournament.

:53:09.:54:25.

Second serve of 130 mph. It's an amazing service motion. Look at the

:54:26.:54:31.

wrist angle to start with. It's an amazing momentum from that

:54:32.:55:03.

first set tie-breaker. Struff made a couple of mistakes but it has been

:55:04.:55:05.

one-way traffic. Raonic has got himself a nice, newly

:55:06.:55:13.

strong racket. Two breaks of serve out the

:55:14.:56:53.

difference in this second set. He will serve for a two set lead.

:56:54.:56:58.

We will be back to see that but we can tell you what else is happening.

:56:59.:57:07.

Angelique Kerber was a break of serve up but dropped her serve. That

:57:08.:57:10.

match is now live on BBC One. On Court Two, where are they? On the

:57:11.:57:22.

red button. They are somewhere. It is Del Potro who is 2-1 up. It is

:57:23.:57:28.

3-3 for the former semifinalist. One result to bring you and what a

:57:29.:57:49.

match this was. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has lost. She

:57:50.:57:56.

certainly had her chances. She could not take them. Finally secured

:57:57.:58:03.

victory on her second match point. Quite a dramatic match.

:58:04.:00:12.

138 mph, into double figures and aces, Milos Raonic. Last year's

:00:13.:00:26.

runner up with a set point. That is nicely done, two breaks of serve.

:00:27.:00:35.

His coach looks British happy with his progress so far. 2:30 p:m., now.

:00:36.:00:48.

So a number of different slightly odd habits. He used to play with a

:00:49.:00:53.

sleeve on his right arm and it became something of a trademark. You

:00:54.:00:57.

might remember that. The company that sponsors him for clothing, he

:00:58.:01:03.

they had a tag line, believe in the sleeve. And he has a gumshield when

:01:04.:01:08.

he is beating between games, he takes that alt. -- and when he is

:01:09.:01:15.

having food between games. The start of the second set was so crucial and

:01:16.:01:22.

so difficult for Struff. You would expect Raonic to be on top in most

:01:23.:01:27.

categories, which he is. But the key was always going to be the first

:01:28.:01:32.

five, ten minutes of the second set, after a close first set. How many

:01:33.:01:37.

times we see it with the top players against the challenge, if you like.

:01:38.:01:42.

A slight drop-off from the lose of the set and the top player

:01:43.:01:45.

accelerates and before you know it, there is a big gap. Struff has a job

:01:46.:01:53.

on his hands to combat from two sets down. No doubt about it. You can

:01:54.:01:59.

only take one point and one game at a time. You can see the confidence,

:02:00.:02:04.

carving across the ball on the backhand side, the swing has become

:02:05.:02:12.

that much easier. Much more carefree from Milos Raonic. Struff to serve

:02:13.:02:15.

at the beginning of the first set. -- third set.

:02:16.:02:34.

He lost to Britain's Dan Evans, Struff, last year in the first

:02:35.:02:43.

round. Such a shame that Dan Evans has really been the dark -- the

:02:44.:02:50.

architect of his own downfall. Testing positive for cocaine and he

:02:51.:02:55.

will face a lengthy ban now. The same pattern in set number two.

:02:56.:03:51.

Raonic is well over his opponent. It is hard -- that turn down the middle

:03:52.:03:58.

setting him up for how he wants to dictate the rest of the point.

:03:59.:05:22.

Well, no doubt delighted with this. He faced Federer here at Wimbledon

:05:23.:05:32.

lashes. 2-1 down in the semifinal. Acquitted himself pretty well. He

:05:33.:05:40.

beats David Goffin in a round of 16 from two sets down. These matches

:05:41.:05:43.

fade into the abyss and you forget them with each passing shot week and

:05:44.:05:50.

month. But Raonic has to be considered a major threat for the

:05:51.:05:54.

Championships this year. 2-0 and a break.

:05:55.:06:21.

Of course, all those matches for the top players, they really contribute

:06:22.:06:30.

to who they are today. And whenever they get into difficult situations,

:06:31.:06:32.

they do remember those situations, I have done that before and I can do

:06:33.:06:39.

it again. And their opponents are quite aware of that situation as

:06:40.:06:40.

well. He is just caught reaching a game

:06:41.:08:45.

for the forehand side. It can get swirly in here and the wind was

:08:46.:08:49.

pulling the ball back towards the net.

:08:50.:08:59.

That is an amazing service action, isn't it? Massive wrist movement and

:09:00.:09:15.

the snap of the racket head through the ball. Two sets and 2-0.

:09:16.:10:08.

It does look a bit swirly, was it when you played? Yes, it does tend

:10:09.:10:20.

to change very quickly, you keep your feet movement going.

:10:21.:11:06.

Serving in the slot again and that was beautiful timing from Raonic. It

:11:07.:11:26.

hit the sweet spot of the racket. A great deal of subtlety on this

:11:27.:11:50.

court. Both these men six tall. Relying heavily on power on the

:11:51.:11:53.

surface. UMPIRE: Let, the surface. -- first

:11:54.:12:04.

service. Advantage, Struff. A break point against Struff, but he

:12:05.:13:37.

holds serve and at least he is in this set, although a break down at

:13:38.:13:46.

2-1. The best German at the moment is Sascha Zverev, who is one of

:13:47.:13:54.

these next-generation players. And they will have their own tournament

:13:55.:14:01.

in Milan. So it is 21 years of age and under. Later this year, before

:14:02.:14:08.

the O2. Yes, the top eight players in that age group. It is a fantastic

:14:09.:14:15.

thing, and somebody we know well, Ross, working in the ATP, has been

:14:16.:14:21.

massively behind that project. Is it going to be best-of-7 or best-of-5

:14:22.:14:28.

sets? There is a shorter school system, the best of five, the first

:14:29.:14:35.

four. That is a great idea. And shorter warm-ups, so a shot clock

:14:36.:14:38.

counting down from the moment the players walk on the court. That is

:14:39.:14:44.

going to be five minutes. And the other thing they are going to do is

:14:45.:14:48.

no net chords. That is going to be funny. Somebody is going to let it

:14:49.:14:57.

roll through and say, that was let. It takes a little getting used to,

:14:58.:15:03.

that rule. But will Zverev qualify for both? That is the question.

:15:04.:15:55.

Racking them up, it Jamie. A Baker's doesn't. -- dozen.

:15:56.:16:33.

They will need to rename that in tennis matches, I don't think I ever

:16:34.:16:48.

got to 13 aces in a tournament. Come on, use serve the big! -- you served

:16:49.:16:53.

a! UMPIRE: New balls, please.

:16:54.:17:17.

Let's be very honest about the record. You are a Wimbledon Singles

:17:18.:17:25.

champion. I will take that! This is the club championship every year for

:17:26.:17:31.

full members and temporary members. And you won it. I was able to squeak

:17:32.:17:36.

through in the final this year. Against? A tough battle against a

:17:37.:17:42.

good buddy, John Doran. Charles was in the draw playing Rafael Nadal. He

:17:43.:17:47.

has won it about 14 times. Outside of the Championships, this

:17:48.:18:08.

is a private tennis club with naturally a strong membership.

:18:09.:18:38.

It is about time he had an easy service game, a hold to love. 3-2,

:18:39.:18:53.

Milos Raonic. So what did you win for your club come huge victory? I

:18:54.:18:59.

won a lovely Trophy which is now back in a very secure Cabinet of the

:19:00.:19:06.

club somewhere. And a nice voucher for the amazing dining room

:19:07.:19:10.

restaurant which we enjoyed from time to time. Which is far more than

:19:11.:19:18.

I deserve. That's true! It is a fantastic private club. And always,

:19:19.:19:24.

looking to the future, to keep it at the very forefront of what sport can

:19:25.:19:30.

do. And they have connections with a number of other great clubs

:19:31.:19:36.

including Augusta, where the Masters golf takes place. And there is Lee

:19:37.:19:41.

Charles on the left looking at his phone. Honestly, we did not know

:19:42.:19:45.

that would happen. He is the coach at Queen's club and he is from

:19:46.:19:50.

Somerset. He is very strong and he has won this club championship a lot

:19:51.:19:55.

and he is part of the player liaison team here. At the Championships.

:19:56.:20:15.

I don't think there is anyone in this tournament that has a bigger

:20:16.:20:23.

forehand than Lee Charles. Nobody here has a bigger serve than this.

:20:24.:20:30.

It is the noise of the thing! That was only 128 mph. He started the

:20:31.:20:37.

match with 141 mph. We're not going to say it is

:20:38.:20:53.

interesting all the time, but it is certainly effective.

:20:54.:21:04.

Here we go. One minute, job done. Struff, not a great deal of rallies

:21:05.:21:21.

for people to enjoy on Court Number One as they continue to throw the

:21:22.:21:24.

heavy artillery at each other. Perfect grass court tactic. Back

:21:25.:22:49.

behind, always difficult to change direction.

:22:50.:23:03.

The pattern of quick service games continues in this first-round match.

:23:04.:23:10.

First set tie-break was absolutely crucial. Raonic won it. And rather

:23:11.:23:18.

run away with set two and three. So far. So far, he is running away from

:23:19.:23:26.

Struff. But with these quick service games, you can easily have a couple

:23:27.:23:32.

of quick returns out of the middle of the racket and in a flash, you

:23:33.:23:36.

can be back on serve again. So nobody can take for granted victory

:23:37.:23:42.

from two sets and one break. That is what was surprising the first set,

:23:43.:23:48.

set and a half, Raonic was in Struff's service game every time.

:23:49.:23:51.

Often his pattern of returning is he goes called for a couple of games

:23:52.:23:55.

and suddenly he strings a number of points together and that makes him

:23:56.:23:59.

even more difficult to play against because at that point, you have no

:24:00.:24:03.

rhythm. Then he gets the break and, OK, I would just space on other 140

:24:04.:24:10.

mph serve! -- I will just face another.

:24:11.:24:22.

The number three seed playing on this court next. Dominic Thiem

:24:23.:24:38.

against 90 Jan Micro is next. -- Vasek Pospisil is next. This is the

:24:39.:24:41.

first in the sunshine. UMPIRE: Mr Raonic has two challenges

:24:42.:25:21.

remaining. And just as we said, when it is only

:25:22.:26:15.

one break, of course, a loose shot on the first point, a good point

:26:16.:26:16.

from Struff and it is 0-30. He doesn't really have a blocked

:26:17.:26:53.

return, does he? Like Federer, utilising more of a volley to meet.

:26:54.:26:58.

The shortened backswing. A couple of times, in this match, you thought

:26:59.:27:05.

that might have helped him. The first to take a swing is Struff.

:27:06.:27:15.

Plenty of top-spin on that, bringing the ball down. This could be the

:27:16.:27:33.

last mini battle for Raonic, as he closes in on victory.

:27:34.:28:03.

UMPIRE: Out! The crowd very keen to see an

:28:04.:28:12.

exchange or two. It was quickly corrected on the

:28:13.:28:47.

sideline. And that is good line judging, there was no chance he was

:28:48.:28:50.

getting his racket on that. So impressive when you have not been

:28:51.:28:54.

under that much pressure, that serve is unplayable. Totally, it had some

:28:55.:28:57.

kick on it, at 134. Despite all the aces, he really

:28:58.:29:32.

doesn't serve many double faults, that is only his third. 49 had been

:29:33.:29:37.

played. Another break point. Look how far outside the tramline

:29:38.:30:38.

Sears. Gets nicely balanced. Great timing. That's why people don't

:30:39.:30:55.

volley fights at this time. Three break points in the game. I'm

:30:56.:31:08.

returnable on the left side. -- it was not returnable.

:31:09.:31:41.

The approach shot straight down the middle, he had no angle to work with

:31:42.:31:46.

but moving his feet created an angle.

:31:47.:32:18.

Some aces, some doubles. Some great passing shots.

:32:19.:33:32.

Mr Raonic is challenging the call. The ball was called out.

:33:33.:33:43.

The line judge called this out, just caught the edge of the line. The bad

:33:44.:33:57.

news is Raonic gets a first serve. Big serve and forehand going back.

:33:58.:34:31.

He's one game from a place in the second round.

:34:32.:37:08.

It is very hard to know what to do with Raonic serving, you can try and

:37:09.:37:15.

change your position, move up the court, start doing handstands and

:37:16.:37:19.

press ups. His red is not easily broken. It's a very fair point. Last

:37:20.:37:28.

opportunity to make some type of impression. Do something completely

:37:29.:37:35.

off the wall. It's about anything to try and help Raonic miss his first

:37:36.:37:43.

serve and then can you get a racquet on the second serve? Fen-3-mac has

:37:44.:37:49.

five break points in this match but the first set tie-break was crucial.

:37:50.:37:55.

Raonic has never lost at the first round.

:37:56.:39:24.

He's got 0-30 again, well played. That's about the best return from

:39:25.:39:33.

Struff in the match. He did so well to get the return back. Clever

:39:34.:39:37.

approach, did not try to do too much, just ask the question of

:39:38.:39:42.

Raonic on the backhand pass. Second game in a row 40-30.

:39:43.:40:11.

Will that be the difference? He wouldn't mind that one back.

:40:12.:40:45.

Very calmly done from Raonic, no need to put any more pace on that.

:40:46.:40:55.

All about taking it off. He did the hard work the serve.

:40:56.:41:55.

And that's away. It has taken in just over two hours, but Struff has

:41:56.:42:07.

broken through, he's broken serve, when Raonic was serving for the

:42:08.:42:08.

match. Would you believe that? This would be the best comeback at

:42:09.:42:19.

Wimbledon of all time. But fair play. You would presume the wind had

:42:20.:42:26.

been taken out of his sails but he kept in there.

:42:27.:43:57.

Looks a different player than a few minutes ago. Body serve.

:43:58.:44:59.

Raonic seemed to be on the verge of the second round but maybe not. He's

:45:00.:45:21.

come back from 2-0 once in his career. That was the US Open. He

:45:22.:45:32.

defeated his opponent and it was the last time he won a match at a Grand

:45:33.:45:50.

Slam. Maybe today is the day? The pressure of the match has shown at

:45:51.:45:57.

the start of the second and third set however he did regroup over the

:45:58.:46:01.

course of ten, 15 minutes and having had that opportunity and not getting

:46:02.:46:10.

it, he regrouped really well. In my view he deserves a break of serve

:46:11.:46:12.

for his efforts in this match. Just a few minutes ago, Milos Raonic

:46:13.:46:26.

of Canada was serving for the match, but lost his serve for the first

:46:27.:46:28.

time. He does have a two set lead. Is he feeling good, or is he feeling

:46:29.:48:03.

good? Yes. Breaking the Raonic serve on grass is a badge of honour and a

:48:04.:48:07.

feather in the. His coach never sure was very much

:48:08.:48:31.

but he will be having kittens on the inside.

:48:32.:48:52.

Just anticipating the ball down the middle on the first serve. Stealing

:48:53.:48:59.

slightly to the middle and could not recover.

:49:00.:49:44.

Both players receive one additional challenge.

:49:45.:50:03.

Milos Raonic is challenging the ball. Ball was called in.

:50:04.:50:14.

Eight aces so far and this is the ninth.

:50:15.:50:44.

He did really well with this one. A few games ago, shot of the match

:50:45.:51:30.

with a backhand pass up the lane. Still recovered in time.

:51:31.:51:50.

Just as in the first set tie-break, he takes the mini-break first.

:51:51.:52:32.

There's been a couple of times when you can see the right tactic. You

:52:33.:52:38.

don't feel like that one needs to be near the line. So much power on it.

:52:39.:52:50.

He lost in the first round of Queen's Club. It is quite some time

:52:51.:52:56.

to wait. There is no substitute for being in a match situation even when

:52:57.:52:59.

you are as experienced. Pretty close to the line. That is

:53:00.:53:31.

his game plan and he's sticking with it. His record was broken at about

:53:32.:53:41.

this point in the first set tie-break, and tension can creep

:53:42.:53:44.

into the game of anybody. You can see the roof behind him. No

:53:45.:53:57.

need for it today. Not as bright as it was earlier but no suggestion of

:53:58.:54:00.

any rain. This is a big point. He put himself in a difficult

:54:01.:54:25.

position. It is becoming a little bit predictable. Doing well to knock

:54:26.:54:39.

the ball back into play for 132 mph serve.

:54:40.:54:55.

Positive tennis but I wondered whether he had a play on that

:54:56.:55:00.

volley. You mentioned the word tension

:55:01.:55:25.

minutes ago. Here's the effect of it. Not doing enough with the

:55:26.:55:29.

volley. Still a good passing shot. He will be kicking himself. He knew

:55:30.:55:32.

it straightaway. Very nicely played. This has been

:55:33.:56:09.

quite tense. Just landed wide. Off and running.

:56:10.:56:56.

It has been challenged and I think we will see confirmation. Game, set

:56:57.:57:05.

and match, Raonic. It was by no means easy and he will be relieved

:57:06.:57:07.

to get into the second round. Warm applause, which will delight

:57:08.:57:29.

Milos Raonic, the man who defeated Roger Federer in the semifinal last

:57:30.:57:37.

year. He was a semifinalist as long ago Glasgow 2014, that as long ago

:57:38.:57:41.

as 2014. There's nothing to suggest he cannot

:57:42.:57:50.

put another run together. Absolutely, he's got the weapons, he

:57:51.:57:56.

is tailor-made for grass courts. I was very impressed with the way that

:57:57.:58:00.

he came out, he was very intent, ready to play at the start. I don't

:58:01.:58:08.

think this will do him any harm and you would only expect him to get

:58:09.:58:12.

better with each match. He has always struggled with

:58:13.:58:26.

problems. He was moving well. This unfortunate loss rate continues in

:58:27.:58:37.

the major tournaments. He's made his contribution in the singles.

:58:38.:58:47.

Milos Raonic advances. He got to the fourth round at the French Open. He

:58:48.:58:58.

has got used to being into the latter stages.

:58:59.:59:06.

We could see a lot of him during the Championships.

:59:07.:59:17.

He was the first Canadian man to reach a grand final, a piece of

:59:18.:59:30.

sporting history for him. Vastly experienced. He's going to play

:59:31.:59:32.

another man of vast Congratulations, a big battle but

:59:33.:59:53.

you must be pleased that you eased your way through that match in

:59:54.:59:58.

straight sets. Yes, it's a very important victory for me. I created

:59:59.:00:02.

a lot of opportunities for myself, did not make the most of them. It

:00:03.:00:07.

was important that regardless of the process I got it done today. In

:00:08.:00:11.

terms of where you think your game is, you've been practising on grass,

:00:12.:00:15.

playing a lot on grass, where do you think you are in comparison to this

:00:16.:00:23.

time last year? I think I'm a better player. Now it's about finding the

:00:24.:00:30.

rhythm. It is matches like today that are very important for me to

:00:31.:00:35.

get through. Next that you got Mikhail Youzhny. You have beaten him

:00:36.:00:42.

a couple of times. How difficult prospect is he? He knows how to

:00:43.:00:45.

play. He knows how to go out there and get the job done. It is

:00:46.:00:49.

important that I am very disciplined and I bring my best tennis and

:00:50.:00:52.

hopefully I can play as much on my terms as possible.

:00:53.:00:58.

SUE BARKER: HE WILL CERTAINLY BE HAPPY TO get under that his belt

:00:59.:01:08.

having gone out in the opening round at Queen's Club.

:01:09.:01:11.

He said he never felt better coming into Grand Slam and will build on

:01:12.:01:15.

the experience he got from getting through to the final and losing to

:01:16.:01:20.

Andy Murray last year and with a serve like that, you can never write

:01:21.:01:23.

him off. Raonic through in straight sets. Some lovely scenes. The

:01:24.:01:26.

weather is beautiful. Playp under way on all courts. Many results to

:01:27.:01:27.

bring you up-to-date with as well: David Ferrer is through, this match

:01:28.:01:38.

against Richard Gasquet, two of the games' greats out there. Gasquet

:01:39.:01:44.

twice has been a semifinalist, Ferrer twice a quarter-finalist but

:01:45.:01:47.

Ferrer, who is not seeded at the Championships for the first time. In

:01:48.:01:52.

fact in a Grand Slam, not seeded for the first time since 2005 and he was

:01:53.:01:58.

ranked as high as 2003. These were the rallies they were producing on

:01:59.:02:02.

court 12. A tough first round between those two but Gasquet, the

:02:03.:02:03.

22nd seed is out, Ferrer is through. And Juan Martin Del Potro, the US

:02:04.:02:18.

Open champion a few years ago, a semifinalist here, he came through

:02:19.:02:20.

against Thanasi Kokkinakis in four sets. Still lovely to see Kokkinakis

:02:21.:02:24.

back on tour. He's had so many injuries on and off since 2015.

:02:25.:02:30.

But's back on court but it is Juan Martin Del Potro who goes through to

:02:31.:02:36.

the next round. Muguruza is through. She was a

:02:37.:02:58.

finalist in in 2015 and won in 2016 and is safely through to the next

:02:59.:03:07.

round. Earlier in the day we saw Kyle Edmund going through, defeating

:03:08.:03:13.

Alex Ward. We know he'll face Gael Monfils. He has come through against

:03:14.:03:19.

Daniel brand of Germany. So in round 2, things Monfils against Kyle

:03:20.:03:23.

Edmund. So that's what has been happening

:03:24.:03:28.

and this is what is happening at the moment: this is Centre Court.

:03:29.:03:38.

That match is live on BBC One if you want to watch. Over on Court Two.

:03:39.:03:51.

Former finalist there, Agnieszka Radwanska earliy stages of her match

:03:52.:03:56.

with Jelenka Jankovic ta. Is our feature match on the red button. And

:03:57.:04:06.

Katie Boulter has taken the first set. A story this is, the

:04:07.:04:10.

20-year-old from Great Britain, a wildcard. A great junior career and

:04:11.:04:16.

she has taken the first set against a very experienced player Christina

:04:17.:04:20.

McHale. Five British players have already made it through the first

:04:21.:04:25.

round. If Katie can make it, it'll be the first time since 2006 that

:04:26.:04:29.

six British players have made it through to the second round. We will

:04:30.:04:36.

keep an eye on her. You can watch on the BBC Sport website. Over the past

:04:37.:04:42.

few months I have been travelling around the world reminiscing with so

:04:43.:04:47.

many of the great champions, some of my friends for a Wimbledon document

:04:48.:04:51.

that went out on Sunday. A travelled to Stuttgart to interview the seven

:04:52.:04:54.

time champion here, Roger Federer. Here are some of the Roger's

:04:55.:04:55.

memories from playing at SW 19. Great moment walking through the

:04:56.:05:20.

gates and asking where is the locker room and where can we warm-up, what

:05:21.:05:26.

are we allowed to do, when do we play, what are the routines?

:05:27.:05:32.

Everything was so new. It is like living in a dream world back in the

:05:33.:05:38.

day, I remember it, very, very vividly. Memories of the unioniour

:05:39.:05:43.

Championship, which he won. Now he needed a breakthrough moment as a

:05:44.:05:50.

grown-up. The 2001 fourth round against Sampras was a surreal

:05:51.:05:55.

experience. . A few times I was like - is it a dream or reality. Then I

:05:56.:06:03.

was like - it must be real, it is an unbelievable feeling I have right

:06:04.:06:07.

now. I remember warming up, the five minutes with Pete hitting balls, I

:06:08.:06:12.

was so nervous. I would hit the ball, I would follow and Pete would

:06:13.:06:20.

hit back to me and I was like - this is so cool, it is Pete Sampras on

:06:21.:06:24.

is so cool, it is Pete Sampras victory in five sets. He was on his

:06:25.:06:33.

way. The first to topple Sampras in five years. The service was pretty

:06:34.:06:39.

big. He returns well. He moves well. He has all the shots. At this point

:06:40.:06:45.

I said - this kid is going to be good. Little did I know I would win

:06:46.:06:53.

18 Majors and do everything in the sport. I could see he was going to

:06:54.:07:03.

Your first Grand Slam. Is that still the one that's so special? ? Ye, it

:07:04.:07:16.

was so emotional so, real. I can tell how raw it is. It just

:07:17.:07:21.

happened. So many eye motions. I was young and it was unexpected at

:07:22.:07:24.

everything. It was absolutely the most magical moment in my life. My

:07:25.:07:27.

career could have' stopped right then and I would've been a complete

:07:28.:07:32.

human being of a tennis player, really. Roger Federer, Wimbledon

:07:33.:07:40.

champion, you better get used to that. Thank you. It is an absolute

:07:41.:07:45.

dream for me coming through. I was always joking around when I was a

:07:46.:07:51.

boy - I'm going to win this. And now I have. I have so much support from

:07:52.:07:59.

back home and everyone here. What is your message to them? Oh, yes, a lot

:08:00.:08:04.

of people came from Basle, home, and it is so nice to share this moment

:08:05.:08:09.

and thanks to everybody, it's great. Congratulations. Roger Federer. It

:08:10.:08:17.

became an annual convenient. Roger won the next four finals. He was the

:08:18.:08:24.

best of a golden generation. Tennis as it had never been played before.

:08:25.:08:41.

Rafael Nadal finally ended Roger's run in 2008 in the final. When you

:08:42.:08:52.

are winning, it is easy for people to love you, you are supposed to be

:08:53.:08:57.

the best. Everything is great. Everything you touch turns to gold.

:08:58.:09:02.

But when you lose and you get the support, I think that means so much

:09:03.:09:05.

to you. He was still winning again, to the

:09:06.:09:20.

extent if he won in 2009 he would pass beyond Bjorn Borg's five titles

:09:21.:09:24.

and Roddick was his opponent on court and not the only person in

:09:25.:09:29.

Roger's thoughts. The record was on the line of getting through. My wife

:09:30.:09:35.

was pregnant with twins, nobody knew that other than the family and my

:09:36.:09:42.

friends and it was like this sort of perfect summer, really for me.

:09:43.:09:45.

COMMENTATOR: Under the gaze of a former champion.

:09:46.:10:08.

Bjorn Borg was there, John McEnroe was there. Pete was there

:10:09.:10:15.

Absolutely, exactly. Pete came. Four and a quarter hours. 37 service

:10:16.:10:20.

games without being broken. Until that last game. I know, I couldn't

:10:21.:10:25.

break Andy. He was playing that well. The only break I got, got me

:10:26.:10:32.

the win. It was totally crazy but it shows that you just have to

:10:33.:10:37.

sometimes mentally push and stay around and physically believe you

:10:38.:10:41.

can manage. And it paid off. It was amazing. I fell in love with the

:10:42.:10:49.

club but not only just the atmosphere of the tennis tournament

:10:50.:10:53.

and its history but also the people at the club. Everyone was so super

:10:54.:10:58.

friendly. I can't wait for the day to come that I will go there and

:10:59.:11:09.

wave for the Championship. Now he is having his sights on an eighth

:11:10.:11:13.

Wimbledon title. That would be special, playing his best tennis at

:11:14.:11:16.

the age of 35, Roger Federer. He will be on court later today. We're

:11:17.:11:20.

heading to Court Number One to see who many people would be the women's

:11:21.:11:28.

champion, Karolina Pliskova. She has served over 200 aces. Well she is

:11:29.:11:39.

Court One. Over to our commentators. COMMENTATOR: Well the players have

:11:40.:12:00.

almost completely their warm-up. Slightly depleated spectator numbers

:12:01.:12:03.

after the previous match but they will return. Here is the

:12:04.:12:11.

head-to-headp between the two players: they've played one over

:12:12.:12:15.

time. Pliskova came through that. You can

:12:16.:12:27.

see Court One looking a little thread bear around the edges,

:12:28.:12:33.

really, reminiscent of how Centre Court looked in the late 2,000s and

:12:34.:12:40.

20007 and 2008 before the roof was attached and the court returned to

:12:41.:12:44.

its glory. You can see that it bears the scars of battle. They only have

:12:45.:12:49.

a nine-month window for the building because the cranes have to be

:12:50.:12:53.

removed but when they are in full flow there are eight giant cranes

:12:54.:12:57.

around the court getting the work done as quickly as possible but it

:12:58.:13:11.

won't be ready until 2018. Not as pretty as it normally is but it'll

:13:12.:13:21.

be worth the wait we're told. Our chair um spire from the people's

:13:22.:13:28.

republic of China is Juan Zhang, who likes to be known as Jennifer Zhang.

:13:29.:13:37.

A few empty seats at the moment as people head out for some late lunch

:13:38.:13:46.

or an early tea and some strawberries, something a little

:13:47.:13:48.

more refreshing but they will return. Pliskova has made a bit of a

:13:49.:13:53.

name for herself in the women's game in the last couple of years and they

:13:54.:13:59.

will want to see her in action, particularly the big serve which has

:14:00.:14:02.

brought her countless aces this season.

:14:03.:14:06.

Pliskova will serve. Here we go, fighting for a place in the second

:14:07.:14:12.

round of the Championships. Pliskova has been the ace leader in

:14:13.:14:39.

the last couple of years and ace leader as well this year. She has a

:14:40.:14:48.

great service motion and repeatable. So helpful under pressure.

:14:49.:15:18.

Nicely done. She glides elegantly around the court, Karolina Pliskova.

:15:19.:15:27.

This is where she improved, looking to move forward in the last couple

:15:28.:15:33.

of years but also her movement. She has gotten stronger.

:15:34.:16:00.

Nicely done for Rodina. She has to keep the ball out of the middle of

:16:01.:16:13.

the court, where Pliskova where Pliskova can get on balance.

:16:14.:16:30.

She's so lethal with the powerful, flat ground strokes.

:16:31.:16:49.

Just a little sloppy from Pliskova. A couple of unforced errors. Always

:16:50.:16:58.

extra nerves the first few games of a first round any tournament. And

:16:59.:17:01.

you can double that in a Grand Slam. Well, this is a surprising start.

:17:02.:17:35.

The coach there to Karolina Pliskova watching on. Break point for

:17:36.:17:39.

Evgeniya Rodina in the opening game. Rinse and repeat for Pliskova. The

:17:40.:18:02.

big serve, short reply on the return and then takes control of the point.

:18:03.:18:31.

Late call. We might get a challenge here from Rodina. She decided

:18:32.:18:46.

against it. Awfully early to challenge, unless you feel pretty

:18:47.:18:47.

sure. Pliskova comes through her first

:18:48.:19:10.

service game but it wasn't as straightforward as she might have

:19:11.:19:14.

imagined. A little bit of resistance from Rodina who is a decent baseline

:19:15.:19:24.

counter-puncher. Rodina with a www. Not a lot of power on the serve or

:19:25.:19:27.

at the baseline, will be consistent. Rodina can be dangerous if she gets

:19:28.:19:39.

to net. She's been a decent doubles player over the years. Quite useful

:19:40.:19:45.

with the volley. We'll see if she gets too many opportunities at the

:19:46.:19:48.

front of court. Pliskova looking up, maybe thinking

:19:49.:20:04.

that last ball from Rodina might have been long. That first serve, 86

:20:05.:20:09.

miles per hour. A clear disparity between the two in the power

:20:10.:20:11.

department. That will be taken care of. Not too

:20:12.:20:48.

much damage at that pace. The return sent straight back to the Russian's

:20:49.:20:51.

feet. Yeah, that second serve was just

:20:52.:21:15.

looped in. Rather lamely. First serves are going to be imperative

:21:16.:21:19.

for Rodina. Her second be serve is so attackable.

:21:20.:21:59.

That was a tremendous frurn Pliskova. Such a clean ball striker.

:22:00.:22:08.

You get the feeling she hasn't quite found that rhythm yet.

:22:09.:22:33.

That is beautiful. Again, adding that element to her game, she has

:22:34.:22:42.

such heavy ground strokes, gets her opponent in a defensive position and

:22:43.:22:47.

then sneaks forward. A nice feel on this volley.

:22:48.:22:55.

Pliskova, on the move. Great accuracy.

:22:56.:23:35.

Evgeniya Rodina is not convinced about that, she thought she might

:23:36.:23:41.

have made that first serve but carries on without losing the

:23:42.:23:44.

challenge. Oh, that was close, that might be worth a look. UMPIRE: Mrs

:23:45.:23:53.

Pliskova challenges the call. COMMENTATOR: It was called out by

:23:54.:24:06.

the line judge. But Hawkeye will give us the decisive answer. It z it

:24:07.:24:08.

got the back edge. Nothing Rodina can do about that.

:24:09.:24:36.

Starting to loosen up. Just hitting with freedom, a loose arm. Break

:24:37.:24:39.

point again. Longest rally of the match, 13

:24:40.:25:12.

strokes. Pliskova with a little peek over at the base linesman. She

:25:13.:25:15.

thought another ball was long, mid-rally. It is important for

:25:16.:25:24.

Rodina to hold. You can feel Pliskova is starting to get a it

:25:25.:25:27.

good rhythm. -- get a good Third break point for our number 3

:25:28.:25:50.

seed. Champion in Eastbourne on Saturday on the grass with victory

:25:51.:25:53.

over Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

:25:54.:26:21.

That's a good exchange. 19 strokes. Lots of power. Better from Rodina,

:26:22.:26:38.

to absorb the pace. Technically, these ground strokes...

:26:39.:26:44.

Rodina is just about holding in to this service game.

:26:45.:27:17.

Well, long first games. 12 minutes on the clock already and not quite

:27:18.:27:22.

through the second game. And Rodina got there in the end. A

:27:23.:27:41.

tenacious hold from the Russian. So, that second game lasted getting on

:27:42.:27:47.

for eight minutes, during which Rodina had to defend three break

:27:48.:27:51.

points but came through unscathed eventually. Pliskova with a lot of

:27:52.:27:56.

mistakes on the return of serve. I wonder whether that will continue or

:27:57.:27:57.

if she'll find her rhythm? That's the toughest serve for a

:27:58.:28:51.

righty to get that in the angle. And Pliskova's favourite serve.

:28:52.:29:04.

Tough to read the Pliskova serve. She can hit the spots nicely.

:29:05.:29:33.

Second double fault for Karolina Pliskova and needs to tread

:29:34.:29:37.

carefully here at 30-30. hopefully I can play as much on my

:29:38.:29:51.

terms as possible. That's what makes her serve so tough

:29:52.:30:06.

to defend. Slow ball out wide, she took the pace off it. 98 mph. Ten

:30:07.:30:12.

mph slower than the quickest delivery she's grown so far.

:30:13.:30:40.

The first set remains on serve, currently.

:30:41.:30:46.

That's the scene over London looking down toward the financial centre.

:30:47.:30:56.

Across the city to the south-west, the leak and Wimbledon Park. The

:30:57.:31:02.

Centre Court roof remains open. It has not closed yet and you can see

:31:03.:31:07.

the work suspended on Court Number One. They've got two nine-month

:31:08.:31:17.

windows with which to finish that roof and add a second covered court

:31:18.:31:20.

to the already brilliant facilities here.

:31:21.:31:33.

The players are grateful for a bit of shade.

:31:34.:31:50.

There's a huge influx of spectators at the change of end after the

:31:51.:32:02.

Raonic victory. Tennis fans want a quick lunch, a sandwich and a drink,

:32:03.:32:08.

then back to watch. Tickets are like gold dust and you don't want to

:32:09.:32:12.

waste your afternoon. When she hit like that it is so

:32:13.:32:52.

beautiful to watch. Very good play, that second ball

:32:53.:33:15.

wrong foods your opponent. Rodina moves inside nice and early, well

:33:16.:33:17.

out in front. I love the way Pliskova moves up to

:33:18.:33:54.

the shorter of very quickly. -- shorter ball. Terrific food work.

:33:55.:34:16.

Rodina is refusing to be bullied out of these points. She's holding her

:34:17.:34:21.

own right now. Just a quick take back straight

:34:22.:34:52.

through the ball. Did not even move her feet.

:34:53.:35:43.

Yes. This time, Pliskova makes no mistake and secures the break of

:35:44.:35:48.

serve. She has a little bit of momentum

:35:49.:36:10.

behind her after a shaky start. It is forgiveable. Difficult opponent.

:36:11.:36:12.

Seems to have calmed down. Now with the break under her belt

:36:13.:36:25.

she can loosen up. That was good. It was lucky but find

:36:26.:36:40.

the line. Fourth ace from the Czech player.

:36:41.:37:11.

Quickest serve of the match. After some nervy games she has

:37:12.:38:29.

settled down. Relaxing into her strategy and is in a pretty

:38:30.:38:31.

commanding position in the opening set. It is amazing how a match can

:38:32.:38:39.

turn around so quickly. She is starting to boss the points. Has

:38:40.:38:50.

stretched the lead. You wonder if the belief has started to dissipate.

:38:51.:39:02.

She is my favourite as of now. Tennis is so wide open. And picking

:39:03.:39:15.

a favourite of someone who has not been past the first round.

:39:16.:39:32.

Can he do something to remedy the deficit?

:39:33.:40:05.

Pliskova thought about stopping and challenging, and that really

:40:06.:40:21.

affected her rhythm. Two former champions, Venus Williams and Petra

:40:22.:40:27.

Kvitova, even though Petra Kvitova is only playing her third tournament

:40:28.:40:28.

back after so many months. Lake Pliskova, she has had a victory

:40:29.:40:38.

on grass. Petra Kvitova got the victory in

:40:39.:40:51.

Birmingham, Pliskova in Eastbourne. She doesn't get a lot of pop on her

:40:52.:41:33.

serve. She needs the first served to connect because the second serve is

:41:34.:41:42.

very slow. Reminds me of another Russian with a troublesome second

:41:43.:41:43.

serve. Perfect. Amazing how many of these softer

:41:44.:42:02.

serves she has missed. Very subtle backhand slice. It is so

:42:03.:43:07.

handy to have it for when you get out of position. That's a good

:43:08.:43:17.

winner. Your second serve is going to be

:43:18.:43:34.

short. Pliskova get the double break and

:43:35.:44:47.

will serve for the opening set. A little variety, the slice so

:44:48.:44:56.

effective. Fen-2-mac is leading 5-1 in the

:44:57.:45:14.

first set. Watched over by her husband and

:45:15.:46:03.

coach. They are here with her daughter, Anna. She is one of four

:46:04.:46:08.

mothers in the draw. Nice to have some young kids around.

:46:09.:46:31.

Great to have Victoria Azarenka back on tour. She has her son with her.

:46:32.:46:45.

Pretty straightforward in the latter stages of the set.

:46:46.:46:58.

She is striking the ball cleanly with very little resistance from

:46:59.:47:00.

Rodina. There is. The opening set ends in a

:47:01.:47:13.

rather one-sided fashion. Pliskova's coach will be pretty

:47:14.:48:13.

happy with the way that his player has eased towards one set lead.

:48:14.:48:30.

Rodina was able to get to just one break point and was not able to

:48:31.:48:38.

convert whereas Pliskova, a couple of conversions but putting a lot of

:48:39.:48:46.

pressure on the serve. That net approach points, has done really

:48:47.:48:51.

well. She is using her strength in the forecourt as well. Five aces as

:48:52.:49:06.

well. Total winners, that is a very tidy first set. The number that I

:49:07.:49:11.

love the most is ten of 11 at the net. That the area she is starting

:49:12.:49:17.

to add to her game. I love the fact she chose to play is more doubles

:49:18.:49:18.

last year. Her game is about so much more than

:49:19.:49:40.

the serve and the ground strokes. She has some of those improvised

:49:41.:49:43.

shots where you come to the net. She's really worked on the volleys

:49:44.:49:47.

well. Her twin sister is also playing in the Championships.

:49:48.:49:58.

Here we go, set number two. Let's see if Rodina can do something about

:49:59.:50:05.

her domination so far. Starting to give herself a little

:50:06.:51:15.

running commentary, beating yourself up following the unforced errors.

:51:16.:51:26.

Starting to get frustrated. Does she have the tools and her game to

:51:27.:51:40.

bother? Cannot serve any bigger, absorbing from the baseline.

:51:41.:51:59.

Her fastest is 103. That's disheartening when it is business

:52:00.:52:03.

like that. Two break points, a second serve

:52:04.:52:15.

coming the way of Pliskova. She is striking the ball so crisply.

:52:16.:53:17.

With one shot she can crack open the point. So close to the sidelines.

:53:18.:53:30.

That is painful. Pliskova breaks in the opening game

:53:31.:53:46.

of the second set. Leading by a set and a break.

:53:47.:53:56.

Pliskova reached her first major final, losing to Angelique curve are

:53:57.:54:07.

in the final. She was the first Czech player to make the final since

:54:08.:54:09.

1993. Nicely done. At the US Open last

:54:10.:54:31.

year, it was such a huge breakthrough for Pliskova, who had

:54:32.:54:35.

never been past the third round. Saved a match point against Venus

:54:36.:54:41.

Williams, beat Serena Williams, who of course was world number one.

:54:42.:54:55.

After she got that confidence in the majors, she got to the semis at the

:54:56.:55:00.

French. That was really impressive. Clay is not her favourite surface.

:55:01.:55:24.

Is this a golden opportunity for Rodina to switch the flow of this

:55:25.:56:58.

match in her favour? And she's broken. An exchange of

:56:59.:57:30.

breaks of serve in the first couple of games of the second set.

:57:31.:57:41.

Nice job mentally for Rodina because this match was slipping away from

:57:42.:57:49.

She held her serve in the second game and then, six games in a row.

:57:50.:58:06.

It would not be a surprise if Rodina's Mind had wondered. She

:58:07.:58:18.

could have been forgiven for losing an element of concentration but she

:58:19.:58:27.

needs to restore it here. She played the first couple of points with a

:58:28.:58:31.

great sense of urgency. Trying to jar herself to get that

:58:32.:58:32.

concentration back. Pliskova going for a two dropping

:58:33.:59:12.

passes, the second one just a little high. Doing a good job of moving

:59:13.:59:16.

forward on that volley. Pliskova going from the towel, not

:59:17.:59:39.

to cool off but often when a player does that they just need to cool

:59:40.:59:40.

off, mentally. I think Pliskova could move up to

:59:41.:00:03.

the second serve return more. She's waiting for it to come to her.

:00:04.:00:22.

Oh, plenty of heat on that service return. Much better court

:00:23.:00:29.

positioning. She moved inside the baseline when it was still up near

:00:30.:00:32.

her shoulder. Snr oh, well played. - Oh, well

:00:33.:01:03.

played. The court One crowd is getting behind the underdog. As is

:01:04.:01:04.

the way at Wimbledon. Some of the best tennis of the match

:01:05.:01:44.

has been played in this particular game. Game 3 of set number 2.

:01:45.:02:09.

Rodina starting to hone in down the line. Deep in the corner.

:02:10.:02:26.

It's a beauty. And all Rodina can do is stand and stare.

:02:27.:03:02.

77 miles per hour on the second serve. Easy pickings for Karolina

:03:03.:03:09.

Pliskova who earns herself another break point.

:03:10.:03:21.

Another second serve being sent down again here.

:03:22.:03:26.

Or not. Double fault. Break of serve. Pliskova back in control

:03:27.:03:35.

after a little wobble. She leads by a set and by 2-1 games. SUE BARKER:

:03:36.:03:47.

We'll back on Court Number One in a moment. But out on Centre Court,

:03:48.:03:51.

Novak Djokovic's opponent, Martin Klizan was forced to retire because

:03:52.:03:55.

of a knee injury. It was obvious from the very early stages of the

:03:56.:03:59.

match he was struggling. It hampered his movement and they decided to

:04:00.:04:02.

risk no further injury and he elected to retire from the match.

:04:03.:04:08.

The number two seed, Novak Djokovic, the three-time champion through with

:04:09.:04:14.

us playing 11 games of the match. So sad to see Martin Klizan forced to

:04:15.:04:17.

withdraw from the Championship. Not the way that Novak would want to

:04:18.:04:33.

go through, either and a few moments ago Agnieszka Radwanska went through

:04:34.:04:39.

against Jankovic. Jan yank struggling with a back injury. She

:04:40.:04:44.

had a number of set points but in the end the former finalist was too

:04:45.:04:49.

good. And show goes through in a tricky first-round match. So a quick

:04:50.:04:57.

turn around for Roger Federer and Alexandr Dolgopolov do. This match

:04:58.:05:05.

is on BBC One. You can see the seven-time champion, Roger Federer a

:05:06.:05:10.

break of serve up. Over on court 12 we'll keep an eye on the red button,

:05:11.:05:15.

the features match where Katie Boulter, the wildcard from Leicester

:05:16.:05:19.

is 2-1 up with a break of serve. So we'll keep an eye on that. That's

:05:20.:05:23.

what is happening elsewhere. Back to Court One.

:05:24.:05:32.

COMMENTATOR: The first point of the game goes to Karolina Pliskova, as

:05:33.:05:36.

most of the points have. Twice she's been on Pliskova's wide

:05:37.:06:14.

court. She is using that second serve up the T. She really varies

:06:15.:06:22.

her service. Just spots in the box. Always keeps her opponent guessing.

:06:23.:06:35.

Never under any pressure, stress-free as she watches the ball,

:06:36.:06:41.

confident that it would land long Stress-free, a great demeanour.

:06:42.:06:48.

Absolutely. She always seems so even-keelside. -- keeled.

:06:49.:07:39.

There doesn't seem to be any immediate change in the direction

:07:40.:07:44.

this match is heading. 20 minutes for this second set so far. Pliskova

:07:45.:07:48.

keeping her distance on the score board. 1-3.

:07:49.:08:04.

Just the ninth unforced error from Pliskova, compared to 29 winners.

:08:05.:08:12.

Plus 20 differential. Ta is impressive. -- that is impressive.

:08:13.:08:36.

Oh, that is a fantastic passing shot. That's the problem with the

:08:37.:08:44.

approach cross-court. You leave that line open and it's very tough to get

:08:45.:08:49.

there on time but that was a terrific pass, nonetheless.

:08:50.:09:09.

Pliskova maintains her advantage. Has the first set and has a break in

:09:10.:09:19.

the second. 3-2. You can see the workings of the new roof, two years

:09:20.:09:26.

away, as Wimbledon will become the second of the Grand Slam venues to

:09:27.:09:33.

have two roofs. Of course Australia has three, in Melbourne Park on Rod

:09:34.:09:39.

Laver and on the Margaret Court Arena and the Arthur Ash stadium

:09:40.:09:44.

opened its roof last year, an amazing feat of engineering on the

:09:45.:09:48.

biggest tennis stadium in the world. 23,000 fans. Amazing, you really are

:09:49.:09:55.

up in the clouds in Row Z in that stadium but there is a roof now

:09:56.:10:02.

because it does rain a lot in late August, early September in New York.

:10:03.:10:06.

They needed to get it done because they were constantly playing Monday

:10:07.:10:09.

finals. There were three or four Monday finals in a row. The French,

:10:10.:10:13.

they are trying to play catch up. They don't have any. They will, in

:10:14.:10:20.

two or three years' time. They are a bit vague but one court at Roland

:10:21.:10:25.

Garros will have a roof before too long.

:10:26.:11:10.

Well, up for her serve so beautifully. She is 6'1", but gets

:11:11.:11:17.

good extension, good wrist snap at the top.

:11:18.:12:05.

A little too flat. Just a little bit of top-spin on that last forehand.

:12:06.:12:55.

Oh, demou - a sign of perhaps focus just deteriorating slightly. -- oh,

:12:56.:13:05.

now. This has happened before. She did press the reset button and reset

:13:06.:13:12.

her mind but, oh, this is one she'd hate to see again. 40-15 to two

:13:13.:13:18.

unforced errors off that forehand wing.

:13:19.:13:23.

And a second serve coming Rodina's way. Can she create a break point

:13:24.:13:27.

out of this situation? 11 of Pliskova's first serves have

:13:28.:13:58.

gone out wide to the backhand, five to the T. She really likes that out

:13:59.:14:02.

wide here. So, after exactly an hour of play on

:14:03.:14:57.

number one court, Karolina Pliskova h Pliskova has strengthened her

:14:58.:15:05.

lead. This is a must-hold game for the Russian.

:15:06.:15:10.

A positive start. Great body swerve there.

:15:11.:15:32.

Able to take all the pace off the ball for the clean winner.

:15:33.:16:25.

A rather lak lustre game from the number three seed but she's still

:16:26.:16:31.

ahead. So, just a chance to reflect as her

:16:32.:16:54.

coach watches on. This is just such an interesting story. The coach was

:16:55.:16:59.

with Petra Kvitova for seven or eight years. Was with her when she

:17:00.:17:09.

won both Wimbledons in 2011, 2014. When they split up, he was content

:17:10.:17:15.

not to travel any more, spend time in the Czech Republic, he has a

:17:16.:17:21.

young family but when Pliskova broke up with her coach at the end of

:17:22.:17:30.

2016, he got the call from Pliskova and he said it was troo good an

:17:31.:17:37.

opportunity to pass up, to work with such a talented player. So, back on

:17:38.:17:41.

the road he is, and the previous coach of Pliskova is now with

:17:42.:17:42.

Kvitova. So a bit of a swap there. Rodina struggling at times with the

:17:43.:18:22.

basics. She won't get too far in this match if she can't keep the

:18:23.:18:25.

rally alive. UMPIRE: A challenge on the call. The

:18:26.:18:51.

ball was called out. A late call. Yes, if the line judge isn't sure,

:18:52.:18:57.

get it checked. COMMENTATOR: It was in. Two blades of grass, that is he

:18:58.:19:00.

a all. -- that's all. Pliskova gets such a great angle on

:19:01.:19:27.

that serve out wide. She really takes her opponents off the court.

:19:28.:19:41.

She seems to be in cruise control now. Three points for a 5-3 lead in

:19:42.:19:50.

this second set. That ball took part of the frame of

:19:51.:19:59.

the racket. So Evgeniya Rodina on the brink of

:20:00.:20:37.

exiting at the first hurdle. A first round defeat. That at the hands of

:20:38.:20:43.

Karolina Pliskova and surely it is not far away as she prepares to

:20:44.:20:50.

serve to stay in this match at 3-5. Well, she just kept that return back

:20:51.:21:33.

in play, right up the middle. That's a good service game from the

:21:34.:21:51.

Russian. Keeps herself in this match, just, after the change of

:21:52.:21:53.

ends, Pliskova will serve for it. Well, Evgeniya Rodina has had some

:21:54.:22:10.

moments in this match. Hasn't really been given the space to flourish by

:22:11.:22:14.

Karolina Pliskova. Her knee is clearly an issue. She's

:22:15.:22:26.

got it taped and ice has been applied at several of the changes of

:22:27.:22:33.

end. It's interesting this, applying the ice to injuries, mid-match. I've

:22:34.:22:38.

started to see it for the first time, just in the last month. We've

:22:39.:22:43.

been told in the past that you don't ice within an hour of playing. Maybe

:22:44.:22:48.

it is just a bit of time that you put the ice on. Definitely changed.

:22:49.:22:58.

Pliskova has to think that she's going to hold this.

:22:59.:23:06.

There is a buzz in the crowd. Something is causing a disturbance.

:23:07.:23:13.

UMPIRE: Thank you, please take your places, thank you.

:23:14.:23:24.

COMMENTATOR: We're ready to go now. Almost ready to go. 68 minutes

:23:25.:23:33.

played and Pliskova is at 5-4 serving for the match.

:23:34.:24:06.

Rodina is really angry now. Head down. She's chuntering away to

:24:07.:24:10.

herself. Well you could predict a game like

:24:11.:24:32.

this from Pliskova, on closing a match out. She's won 36 matches this

:24:33.:24:43.

year, tied for the most on tour. That one flew up off the line to

:24:44.:24:48.

give Karolina Pliskova three match points.

:24:49.:25:22.

That's it. It didn't take long in the end. And the number three seed

:25:23.:25:36.

eases her way into the second round with victory over Evgeniya Rodina.

:25:37.:25:40.

And takes and enjoys the applause of the appreciative tennis fans on the

:25:41.:25:46.

number one court. An hour and 11 minutes. A nice little warm-up for

:25:47.:25:52.

tougher matches to come for Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova should be happy

:25:53.:26:00.

with that first-round match-up, nine aces. 35 winners. Kept it to a tidy

:26:01.:26:08.

13 unforced errors. Really just played that one nervous game to open

:26:09.:26:10.

the match. APPLAUSE

:26:11.:26:23.

Generous applause for Evgeniya Rodina, followed off court by the

:26:24.:26:33.

number three seed, who stopped just stopped to sign a few tennis balls.

:26:34.:26:41.

Tennis fans from all over the world purchase the big replica balls and

:26:42.:26:45.

make it a mission to get as many signatures as they can. It's not

:26:46.:26:53.

just the kids, grown-ups do it as well. A long name to sign - Karolina

:26:54.:27:05.

Pliskova. I'm sure she's got a shorter, truncated version.

:27:06.:27:17.

So, a fairly straightforward work youted for Karolina Pliskova. She is

:27:18.:27:25.

-- workout for Karolina Pliskova. She's won 6-4, 6-4 and she's talking

:27:26.:27:31.

to Lee. Congratulations, you made the first set look easy, the second

:27:32.:27:36.

set tougher yu I'm sure you are pleased with how you played.

:27:37.:27:40.

Definitely. It is my second appearance in this court. But I

:27:41.:27:45.

enjoyed to play there. I hope I can be better in the next round. You

:27:46.:27:49.

obviously won the trophy at Eastbourne. You come into this as a

:27:50.:27:52.

real danger to so many different players out there. How do you feel

:27:53.:27:58.

your grass court game is just now? Well, so far good. I have one title

:27:59.:28:03.

and started well today. I think I can still improve in the next one

:28:04.:28:06.

and hopefully my game can be dangerous on the grass this year if

:28:07.:28:11.

I serve, if I serve well I think I have a chance it beat everyone. What

:28:12.:28:19.

do you know about your next opponent? Goods to know. I have not

:28:20.:28:25.

seen the draw. I'm expecting a tough one. I don't think we've met. I know

:28:26.:28:31.

her well. We've practised a few times so expecting a tough one. . In

:28:32.:28:37.

terms of the whole experience, how nice is it to be back, the crowd

:28:38.:28:42.

gave you a round of applause. Well, I was happy it was almost full, the

:28:43.:28:49.

court, it is always better to play n tennis, with such a great crowd.

:28:50.:28:53.

So... Congratulations. And this is how she polished off the match and

:28:54.:28:57.

made her way through to the second round, quite comfortably, unreturned

:28:58.:29:00.

serve down the centreline. She served nine aces and 17 unreturned

:29:01.:29:07.

serves. Certainly the cornerstone of her match much she's no one-trick

:29:08.:29:13.

pony, though. She has excellent all-court game but the serve wins

:29:14.:29:16.

her so many free points in every match on every surface. But

:29:17.:29:26.

particularly here on grass. And when she's holding serve easily, that

:29:27.:29:30.

really frees her up on the return games. Pliskova only faced two break

:29:31.:29:37.

points today. So, the spectators didn't have long

:29:38.:29:54.

away from the court. Just an hour, since the hour or so, hour an a

:29:55.:30:00.

quarter since the Milos Raonic match ended. They had an hour and 11

:30:01.:30:04.

minutes of Pliskova's victory. So they're eager for more tennis and

:30:05.:30:13.

the men are next on Court One with a very exciting match in prospect as

:30:14.:30:17.

Dominic Thiem takes on Vasek Pospisil, Thiem in position of one

:30:18.:30:20.

of the best of the single-handed backhands on tour right now. Always

:30:21.:30:25.

a good man to watch. He's playing Vasek Pospisil, who's been a

:30:26.:30:28.

champion here at Wimbledon in doubles in the past. Won the title

:30:29.:30:36.

with Jack Sock of the USA in about 2012, I think.

:30:37.:30:43.

Victory for Karolina Pliskova. The number three seed is safely through

:30:44.:30:52.

to round two. SUE BARKER: Karolina Pliskova, many

:30:53.:30:59.

people'stip for the title. We will leave Court Number One show you what

:31:00.:31:02.

happened with Katie Boulter from Leicester, the 21-year-old playing

:31:03.:31:12.

the experienced American Christina McHale a disappointing end but she

:31:13.:31:16.

certainly played a very good match and I'm sure she has a big future at

:31:17.:31:21.

Wimbledon, but it is Christina McHale who goes through to the next

:31:22.:31:26.

round. Huge disappointment, I am sure. She has learned a lot from her

:31:27.:31:34.

first at Wimbledon. One other result. Petra Martic of Croatia has

:31:35.:31:46.

put the 20th seed out, Daria Gavrilova. Martic of Croatia

:31:47.:31:55.

defeating the 20th seed 10-8. Well done to her. Disappointment out on

:31:56.:32:04.

Centre Court. Martin Klizan, he defaulted in his match against Novak

:32:05.:32:09.

Djokovic. An hour later, here is Alexandr Dolgopolov, walking to the

:32:10.:32:16.

net. We had the trainer on. You could hear the disappointment in the

:32:17.:32:21.

crowd. He is forced to retire. The Centre Court crowd thinking they

:32:22.:32:26.

would see Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, have only seen a set and a

:32:27.:32:31.

bit of both. They are hugely disappointed. Federer through and is

:32:32.:32:34.

still on course for and eighth Wimbledon title.

:32:35.:32:40.

We will wait to see what matches are put onto Centre Court. They have a

:32:41.:32:49.

couple of stand-bys. In the meantime, Court Number Two, Thomas

:32:50.:32:52.

Burdick against Jeremy Chardy, two well-known faces on Court Number Two

:32:53.:32:57.

and early stages of the match. Thomas Berdych leading 2-1.

:32:58.:33:04.

Let's join our commentators. COMMENTATOR: Tomas Berdych with a

:33:05.:33:17.

glimmer of opportunity for break points. He has been caught out by

:33:18.:33:31.

the bounce. He was caught in two minds. Three break points for Tomas

:33:32.:33:38.

Berdych. This is what happens when he is zero and four against this

:33:39.:33:45.

opponent. He panicked. Brushed it into the net unnecessarily. A lot of

:33:46.:33:47.

work to do for the French man now. The mis-hits secured the break point

:33:48.:34:14.

for Tomas Berdych. Thomas Berdych the run-up of 2010 here looking very

:34:15.:34:18.

sharp. This looks like a Third He is a man who stands very tall. He

:34:19.:35:02.

enjoys the grass. He has been semifinal or beyond in all four

:35:03.:35:05.

Grand Slams. Both players are where they are

:35:06.:35:35.

desperate to get on the front foot after the serve lands. When they

:35:36.:35:41.

find their spots behind serve number one, they are dangerous. Chardy with

:35:42.:35:50.

a toehold against the Berdych serve for the first time in the match

:35:51.:35:51.

himself. Chardy looking quizzically at the

:35:52.:36:07.

grass beyond the baseline. A force area from the backhand wing.

:36:08.:36:28.

This is what happens at this stage. He has just lost his last service

:36:29.:36:36.

game and there is hesitancy. He is unsettled already. That is what a

:36:37.:36:40.

seed like Berdych will do to you. That serve was at 129 mph. A rifle

:36:41.:37:11.

shot. An unforced error on the approach.

:37:12.:37:41.

Berdych consolidates the break. Berdych has put himself into a

:37:42.:38:04.

commanding position. A break to the good in the set. Rattling off four

:38:05.:38:09.

straight points after finding himself in a 0-40 hole. I came with

:38:10.:38:19.

one of my players, Josh, who came up against this young man in the junior

:38:20.:38:25.

event in his opening round and Thomas Berdych was the person the

:38:26.:38:29.

other side of the net. A spotty, tall team. He has not changed much.

:38:30.:38:34.

He does not have spots, of course, but he is incredibly strong and even

:38:35.:38:41.

at that tender AG had a big serve. Josh lost 7-5, 6-4. Did himself the

:38:42.:38:47.

world of good in terms of confidence but I think Thomas Berdych went on

:38:48.:38:53.

to win that year. He has always been a big force on grass and his game

:38:54.:38:58.

has evolved nicely over the years, and there is somebody doing

:38:59.:39:00.

meditation. You see the players doing that when they change ends.

:39:01.:39:06.

People spilling in thick and fast to get a glimpse of Berdych. He is

:39:07.:39:10.

sitting pretty at the moment. The radar of Chardy has gone a

:39:11.:39:37.

little bit all -- awry. It is like boxing quit. You have to

:39:38.:40:09.

plan until you are punched in the face -- the boxing quote. He has

:40:10.:40:13.

come up with the strategy, I am sure, but he is up against Berdych

:40:14.:40:15.

who is smothering him. He knows if he does not find his

:40:16.:40:33.

spots regulate, Berdych will be all over him and that in itself is

:40:34.:40:38.

making him tight. There is no leeway against a man like Tomas Berdych.

:40:39.:40:40.

All very little. A nice analogy, Berdych in fourth

:40:41.:41:01.

out of five gears, can cruise through the match because he is a

:41:02.:41:07.

heavyweight. Chardy you feel has to play fifth gear all the way to

:41:08.:41:13.

contest this. Short of the men, slightly lighter in frame. -- the

:41:14.:41:16.

shorter of the two man. Act knowledge in the service hold

:41:17.:41:30.

after falling behind. -- he is acknowledging the service hold.

:41:31.:41:36.

Chardy has to find a way to get a foothold into this man's service

:41:37.:41:39.

game. 0-30, he had last time, but he was

:41:40.:41:48.

denied. That forehand almost buckling the

:41:49.:42:33.

racket in the hands of Jeremy Chardy. Struggling with the pick-up.

:42:34.:42:55.

You feel sympathy for Chardy. It was a great approach and Chardy got the

:42:56.:43:16.

ball up and down well but a great volley from Berdych.

:43:17.:43:39.

Wrong-footed with the forehand. It was the way he deflected it back. So

:43:40.:43:47.

effortlessly from Berdych. This is a typical serve from a top player. A

:43:48.:43:53.

decent return from Chardy. Berdych drops his haunches. Deflects that

:43:54.:44:00.

one. Beautifully done. As we thought coming into the first serve, a

:44:01.:44:03.

priority for both men. Because Berdych has wriggle room he

:44:04.:44:25.

will consider that a positive miss. It did not miss by much. He struck

:44:26.:44:31.

it well. He has leeway to secure the game and with it a possible 5-2

:44:32.:44:36.

lead. Somehow Chardy needs to direct returns to the backhand of Berdych

:44:37.:44:44.

but priority number one is just getting back into the court.

:44:45.:44:52.

Fortune favouring Thomas Berdych. But also tough on another forceful

:44:53.:44:57.

first serve. 124 mph. For me a big statistic is Jeremy

:44:58.:45:20.

Chardy is none from three on second serve points won. Berdych four from

:45:21.:45:27.

five, which indicates when they get mid-rally, the player from the Czech

:45:28.:45:31.

Republic is very much favourite. That is a big factor. When they

:45:32.:45:38.

start trading mid-rally, as anticipated, Thomas Berdych very

:45:39.:45:42.

much in the driving seat of those situations, and he is what, three

:45:43.:45:49.

inches taller. A more burly frame. The playmaker. Chardy has it within

:45:50.:45:57.

him to beat Berdych but he has to play at the pinnacle of his

:45:58.:46:04.

abilities throughout. In their four previous meetings, Thomas Berdych

:46:05.:46:08.

has emerged victorious in all four, the most recent meeting at this

:46:09.:46:12.

tournament at this stage two years ago. Berdych prevailed in four sets.

:46:13.:46:21.

Three of which were decided by a tie-break, which is how close Chardy

:46:22.:46:27.

has come. He has yet to emerge as the victor as he looks to progress

:46:28.:46:33.

to the second round of Wimbledon. For the seventh time. Currently down

:46:34.:46:41.

a break, serving with you balls. -- with new balls.

:46:42.:47:07.

He would normally make that slice nine times out of ten.

:47:08.:47:16.

That was the first point he has won on his second serve. There was more

:47:17.:47:55.

slice on it and he fully committed. Earlier, there was hesitancy. Now he

:47:56.:48:02.

is a lot more into it. That is how it has got to be. Front foot tennis

:48:03.:48:09.

from the French man. It is not enough to wait in the rally with big

:48:10.:48:14.

Berdych. You have to try to bulldoze him out of points quicker than he

:48:15.:48:15.

does you. Interesting to note Berdych stepped

:48:16.:49:20.

up to receive the second serve. Practically bisecting the baseline

:49:21.:49:24.

when he struck it. It brings about deuce.

:49:25.:49:39.

A well executed overhead by Jeremy Chardy. This is an important game

:49:40.:49:49.

for Chardy. If nothing else, psychologically, if he could stay in

:49:50.:49:55.

touch. On the coat-tails of Berdych, it is important. Even if you lost

:49:56.:50:00.

this set, it would bode well going into set two. His third ace of the

:50:01.:50:04.

match. Now the serve of Berdych, which has

:50:05.:50:19.

been dependable so far. Using that to close out this first set.

:50:20.:50:46.

Over 80% of points won behind his first serve, Thomas Berdych.

:50:47.:51:03.

When he is landing his first serve and Chardy is in the rally, Chardy

:51:04.:51:10.

is way beyond the baseline due to the weight of shot.

:51:11.:51:34.

It was the backhand that produced the winning volley but during the

:51:35.:52:22.

course of the point, the forehand blasted Chardy off the court. The

:52:23.:52:27.

number 11 seed takes the opening set in 27 minutes.

:52:28.:52:37.

It was a dictatorial display from Thomas Berdych. An audible crunch

:52:38.:52:45.

every time he committed to the forehand side and serve in

:52:46.:52:51.

particular as we peruse the statistics. Look at the second serve

:52:52.:53:01.

points won disparity. Winners and unforced errors, both in positive

:53:02.:53:06.

territory, so it has been a watchable match. High-quality

:53:07.:53:10.

serving from both. Berdych backing up his serve better than Chardy, who

:53:11.:53:14.

lost the solitary break of serve in the opening set. Thomas Berdych on

:53:15.:53:30.

the front foot throughout. Can he continue in that vein? Will there be

:53:31.:53:38.

a blip, and allowance, that lets Chardy into this?

:53:39.:53:46.

UMPIRE: Time. Take your seat quickly, please, ladies and

:53:47.:54:01.

gentlemen. Berdych electing to change his kit but it is this man

:54:02.:54:04.

who needs a change in fortunes. Jeremy Chardy. Just the one break

:54:05.:54:14.

during the course of the opening set. It proved terminal in the

:54:15.:54:20.

context of the set itself. That is a terrific response from

:54:21.:55:26.

Jeremy Chardy. Any disappointment at losing the

:55:27.:55:41.

first set put to the back of his mind immediately. Producing a very

:55:42.:55:49.

solid service game. Psychologically, this is big. He can now hopefully

:55:50.:55:54.

keep his nose in front in this set, which could be important and might,

:55:55.:56:01.

if he can, get to the business end of the set, maybe a tie-break

:56:02.:56:05.

against Berdych and we saw a couple of years ago he took one of the

:56:06.:56:11.

three tie-breaks on offer. He has to hold onto his serve. That

:56:12.:56:13.

imperative. I guess from a return perspective he

:56:14.:56:27.

has to change the look to Berdych. He knew that coming in, maybe stand

:56:28.:56:33.

back, step to one side, and are Berdych to serve in different

:56:34.:56:37.

directions and see if you can get inside the head of Berdych. It is an

:56:38.:56:42.

uphill battle, but you have to try something different. If you do what

:56:43.:56:46.

you have always done, you will get what you have always got.

:56:47.:56:55.

A well crafted point. Berdych giving the impression of a man playing

:56:56.:57:03.

comfortably within himself. One of the best exponents of serve

:57:04.:57:36.

and fur shot in the game, Berdych. -- first shot. He has beaten all of

:57:37.:57:41.

the big four players in majors. That for me is the outstanding strapline.

:57:42.:57:51.

Both players racing through their service games.

:57:52.:58:24.

That was better from Chardy. Real commitment. He is ranked just

:58:25.:58:32.

outside 70 in the world and Thomas Berdych as low as 15. The difference

:58:33.:58:38.

is that Berdych is totally committed to his game plan. Chardy is still

:58:39.:58:44.

hesitant. Better, it is starting to build. He is getting the flow behind

:58:45.:58:51.

him. The initial couple of points in his service games are critical. And

:58:52.:58:56.

then the self trust, and the momentum in the performance comes

:58:57.:58:57.

along as well. And guess what, if you hold serve to

:58:58.:59:04.

love. Chardy's presence at the net proving

:59:05.:59:38.

impassable. The response he has produced is

:59:39.:59:54.

impressive. Showing no hangover of conceding the opening set in 27

:59:55.:00:07.

minutes. I would love to be a fly on the wall when the French camp were

:00:08.:00:12.

out to dinner in terms of discussion, what is the tactical

:00:13.:00:16.

game plan? He knew he had to bring his best and with that comes a

:00:17.:00:21.

pre-match nervous state as a consequence. There is no leeway. If

:00:22.:00:26.

you do not bring more than eight out of ten, you will be crushed. That is

:00:27.:00:32.

tough. It is a tough, tough draw for Jeremy Chardy and one in which you

:00:33.:00:42.

would imagine if he is down to 71 in the world, one of his goals would be

:00:43.:00:45.

top 15. In terms of preparation leading into Wimbledon, round of 32

:00:46.:00:48.

at Eastbourne. In Queen's, coming through two rounds of qualifying.

:00:49.:00:55.

Ultimately losing in the second round against Feliciano Lopez, who

:00:56.:01:02.

went on to take Queen's, of course. He also beat Berdych en route to

:01:03.:01:04.

that championship. That was great French front foot

:01:05.:01:35.

tennis. The crowd enjoying that, seeing him so free swinging. That is

:01:36.:01:41.

how it has got to be. We have seen some great tennis from this man over

:01:42.:01:47.

the years, but it has been few and far between, those performances of

:01:48.:01:47.

late. We have seen a few injuries in this

:01:48.:02:22.

competition here. Berdych, six feet five, always an uncomfortable moment

:02:23.:02:26.

when you see a player losing their footing on the grass, but seems to

:02:27.:02:31.

be OK. I think it was a straightforward slip, he is OK.

:02:32.:02:33.

Which is good to see. He got there, just couldn't control

:02:34.:02:58.

the rocket had. What an effort from Chardy. Soft hands from Berdych. He

:02:59.:03:09.

is pretty nimble, Chardy. It was very makeable. His dad is a lawyer,

:03:10.:03:13.

his brother is a lawyer. It seems he is almost too cognitive in this

:03:14.:03:20.

match. It is a narrow thought the bridge, you cannot carry too many

:03:21.:03:24.

thoughts. It has got to be simple. See it, bash it.

:03:25.:03:42.

Both players staying behind the baseline. It is the longest rally of

:03:43.:03:50.

the match. Berdych takes the point. During the course of that point, the

:03:51.:03:54.

ball just barely skimming over the tape.

:03:55.:04:32.

Much better from Chardy. That is the first sliced backhand we have seen

:04:33.:04:42.

him make in a while. It Lyft through the Berdych court. Berdych's error

:04:43.:04:48.

on the backhand wind brings up the first break opportunity.

:04:49.:04:57.

He took the speed of it, but the direction was perfect. A slumber for

:04:58.:05:07.

down the centreline on this occasion for Tomas Berdych.

:05:08.:05:24.

Berdych, knew the challenge was imminent from the Frenchman, has

:05:25.:05:29.

raised the bar himself. Bearing in mind he was trailing 0-30 in this

:05:30.:05:34.

game, clawed it back to 30-30. This is really strong tennis from

:05:35.:05:37.

Berdych. Berdych staves of the break point.

:05:38.:06:11.

And we remain on serve in this second set. That was a stern

:06:12.:06:20.

examination. His serve was under scrutiny, that is for sure. Came

:06:21.:06:23.

through unblemished. Again. That last unreturnable serve was a

:06:24.:07:19.

clever one from Chardy. Right into the left hip of Berdych, just

:07:20.:07:21.

handcuffing him. After Berdych had to fend off a

:07:22.:08:00.

break point. Stark contrast, semper aggro -- Chardy has the advantage of

:08:01.:08:11.

serving first. Chardy doing his best just to crank up the pressure that

:08:12.:08:16.

is being applied to the 15th ranked player in the world. You feel the

:08:17.:08:22.

shackles are. Chardy finding his range and starting to relax and

:08:23.:08:26.

settle into this match. When the player relaxes, the symphony begins.

:08:27.:08:33.

There is an element of relaxation in these racket sports. He is finding

:08:34.:08:40.

that right now, you feel. Whereas in the opening set, there was thanks. I

:08:41.:08:45.

think that is because Berdych broke his serve on the. That was wounding.

:08:46.:08:49.

Now hopefully he is back on track and keeping his nose in front. Long

:08:50.:08:55.

may it continue. It will make it an more watchable much, but there is

:08:56.:09:03.

barely every seat in the match. 4000 seater stadium. Berdych, with work

:09:04.:09:13.

to do, playing catch-up in the second set, but asset to the good.

:09:14.:09:20.

-- asset. He has had a lot of traffic going to

:09:21.:09:38.

that backhand side. You can see him trying to simulate in the shadow

:09:39.:09:45.

swinging. That is where Berdych has been directing most of his attack.

:09:46.:09:51.

If he goes to the Chardy forehand, it has been hard.

:09:52.:10:10.

Forceful hitting from both players. It is incessant. There is no letup

:10:11.:10:27.

at all. Lovely forehand finish put away. Look at the court position as

:10:28.:10:29.

well, right inside the baseline. And unreturnable serve followed by

:10:30.:11:11.

NA is from Tomas Berdych. -- by in ace. The edges ahead in the ace

:11:12.:11:16.

count. Ties things up three games all in this second set. Where only

:11:17.:11:23.

Chardy has had a glimmer of a break point opportunity. He couldn't

:11:24.:11:28.

convert so we remain on serve. Chardy to serve, three games all.

:11:29.:11:45.

That will have to go down as an unforced error. Contrast to what has

:11:46.:11:56.

been taking place so far. It was Berdych who was way behind the

:11:57.:11:57.

baseline. Clever choice of serve from the

:11:58.:12:40.

Frenchman. Opting to go to the body of Berdych. If it is going right, it

:12:41.:12:45.

has to go very wide because the wingspan of the Czech player is

:12:46.:12:53.

vast. 128 mph on his fifth ace of the match.

:12:54.:13:27.

UMPIRE: Game, Chardy. New balls, please. On that final point of the

:13:28.:13:43.

seventh game, it was Chardy who was orchestrating things wonderfully.

:13:44.:13:49.

Pulling Berdych left and right, testing his mobility. With all this

:13:50.:13:55.

"To aim at, he make no mistake to hold serve. The service games look a

:13:56.:14:02.

lot more credible. He looks like he was playing of his highest career

:14:03.:14:12.

high, 25. He looks good, it is the return game is that somehow, he

:14:13.:14:15.

needs a little extra or a little inspiration from somewhere. First

:14:16.:14:26.

serve percentage has risen for Jeremy Chardy. Not as efficient as

:14:27.:14:37.

he was in the first set, but still, he has conceded a break. Chardy's

:14:38.:14:50.

level has risen. Berdych, still doing his job and holding serve. We

:14:51.:14:56.

remain on serve, Berdych to serve. New balls.

:14:57.:15:20.

What a shot! Forehand from behind the baseline. Fantastic winner.

:15:21.:15:31.

Really going after this with abandon. Look at this, the dynamics

:15:32.:15:37.

around that, throwing the hips through and the shoulders following

:15:38.:15:45.

suit. Great rotational power. It is really igniting nicely now, this

:15:46.:15:54.

match. Winners are bound on show Court Two. Berdych gets on the front

:15:55.:15:59.

foot and crushes that down the line. The final overhead well executed

:16:00.:16:24.

indeed by Berdych. For me, a big change in this second

:16:25.:17:09.

set. Chardy is more intact and up together of his backhand side. We

:17:10.:17:12.

saw several missed in the first set, but not now. More watertight of the

:17:13.:17:16.

drive backhand side. He has done it once again. A

:17:17.:17:48.

wonderful passing shot and Jeremy Chardy brings up break point on the

:17:49.:17:58.

Tomas Berdych serve. Nine times out of ten when you see Berdych coming

:17:59.:18:02.

forward inside the baseline, lining up for the short ball, he is the

:18:03.:18:06.

winner. But Chardy wriggled out of jail. Big moment for the Frenchman

:18:07.:18:08.

here. He has done it. Chardy gets the

:18:09.:18:24.

break to go ahead in this second set. Now, he will be serving for the

:18:25.:18:38.

set. This point, their reaction was greeted with a roar of approval from

:18:39.:18:50.

Chardy. Can he consolidate and draw level at a set each?

:18:51.:19:02.

It has been mesmerising throughout the second set.

:19:03.:19:26.

He is bulldozing his way through these points now. Not fair, wounding

:19:27.:19:36.

the Lions team. Berdych trying to encourage himself.

:19:37.:19:56.

Pumping his fist but producing the winner in the open court. That was

:19:57.:20:04.

another illustration that if you step off the gas in the point and

:20:05.:20:10.

give him an end, Chardy will grasp it with both hands.

:20:11.:20:18.

Has to be high-risk, high reward. Go big or go home.

:20:19.:20:36.

Berdych unleashing the power, once again. Again, the big toll check

:20:37.:20:53.

getting on the front foot. Thrashed it downwards.

:20:54.:21:04.

It is Chardy continuing to play free swinging tennis to bring up set

:21:05.:21:08.

point. Brilliant second set of tennis from

:21:09.:22:04.

Jeremy Chardy. Breaking Tomas Berdych in the eighth game and

:22:05.:22:09.

consolidating the break to take the second set 6-3 in 33 minutes.

:22:10.:22:22.

You feel delighted for the Frenchman. It was an exemplary set

:22:23.:22:36.

of tennis. Unforced errors, Berdych is plus seven. Chardy is plus eight.

:22:37.:22:40.

More to the point, Chardy took the solitary break of serve in that set.

:22:41.:22:45.

Incredible, very, very high level and Berdych only winning a third

:22:46.:22:53.

points in set two. Good job from the Frenchman, but can he continue in

:22:54.:23:04.

that vein. His response, after conceding the opening set was

:23:05.:23:09.

emphatic. He came out, raced through his service games and there was a

:23:10.:23:13.

discernible increase in the intensity of the Tennessee was

:23:14.:23:16.

playing. Going for big shots, swinging more freely. -- tennis he

:23:17.:23:24.

was playing. It was Berdych who buckled, conceding the eighth game.

:23:25.:23:28.

Never a good time to concede a break, but by conceding at that

:23:29.:23:32.

point, it gave Chardy the opportunity to serve out for this

:23:33.:23:39.

second set. He did so with aplomb. They are delighted, aren't they, the

:23:40.:23:47.

Chardy camp. In-laws, girlfriend, and they are all there geeing him

:23:48.:23:48.

on. We are tied at one set all. Third

:23:49.:23:57.

set, Berdych serving. He had Berdych on the run. He knows

:23:58.:24:37.

that is an opportunity gone begging. First above faults of the match from

:24:38.:25:14.

Tomas Berdych. -- double fault. SUE BARKER: one set all. We are

:25:15.:25:50.

having to leave this match on BBC Two, but it does continue on the red

:25:51.:25:58.

button and the BBC Sport website. But here on BBC Two, we are going to

:25:59.:26:04.

take you to Centre Court after the two retirements, Caroline Wozniacki

:26:05.:26:10.

is taking on the May above us, ranked 42 in the world. This is for

:26:11.:26:16.

games all in the first set. Let's join our commentators, Liz Smiley

:26:17.:26:18.

alongside Matthew Chilton. COMMENTATOR: Both players serving

:26:19.:26:42.

solidly. Really good entertainment with some long, hard-hitting

:26:43.:26:43.

rallies. We knew what to expect from Caroline

:26:44.:27:07.

Wozniacki but it is Babos who has come out of the gates firing. She

:27:08.:27:11.

has made ten winners, nine unforced errors and that will be the key for

:27:12.:27:17.

this match, Babos, to keep the unforced errors to a minimum.

:27:18.:27:55.

She seemed to change her mind halfway through the backswing. Very

:27:56.:28:01.

often the reason that happens, you have a quick look to see where your

:28:02.:28:06.

opponent is going and you decide to go the other way. Babos made the

:28:07.:28:15.

move and Wozniacki paid attention to it. Could be a dangerous mistake.

:28:16.:28:35.

There is the Wozniacki connections box. There is a challenge here. I

:28:36.:28:52.

thought I saw a little puff of something right. Let's see what

:28:53.:28:53.

Hawk-Eye makes of this. That is a let off. Babos, a long way

:28:54.:29:40.

behind the baseline. Wozniacki, inside the court.

:29:41.:30:09.

A few more unforced errors starting to creep into Babos' game here.

:30:10.:30:24.

Wozniacki is back in front. Babos will serve to stay in the opening

:30:25.:30:32.

set at 45-macro. -- 4-5. Caroline Wozniacki having a

:30:33.:30:53.

discussion. Telling the umpire to pay attention. Could have got quite

:30:54.:31:01.

awkward the Wozniacki at 1530. This lady here, Timea Babos, doing a good

:31:02.:31:10.

job. She lost her serve early, then broke straight back. A lot of

:31:11.:31:15.

pressure on her. You hit a lot of balls, cover a lot of ground and the

:31:16.:31:21.

pressure to hit big of both sides, to have the courage of your

:31:22.:31:25.

conviction to keep playing like that without making the unforced errors,

:31:26.:31:30.

is a challenge for this lady. She played three grass courts of events

:31:31.:31:34.

ahead of Wimbledon and went out in the first round in all of them. In

:31:35.:31:43.

the new event in Majorca and then at Eastbourne. The first-round exits.

:31:44.:31:50.

She is desperate for a win. Bit of scoreboard pressure here for Babos.

:31:51.:31:52.

Serving in the opening set. Wozniacki, wants something tidied

:31:53.:32:10.

up. A towel, from the grass to the chair! Let's hope she is that tidy

:32:11.:32:14.

at home! She tried to steer it. Just a little

:32:15.:32:28.

bit careful, Babos. Couple of unforced areas, badly

:32:29.:33:05.

timed unforced errors from Babos. She has hit 12 in total. Wozniacki

:33:06.:33:08.

can sense a big opening here. Wozniacki wants this double-checked.

:33:09.:33:26.

She's not convinced it was an ace. It was pretty fast. If it is an ace,

:33:27.:33:31.

it will be the quickest serve of the match and it is in. 190 mph. -- 119.

:33:32.:33:55.

A good angle from Wozniacki. Set points.

:33:56.:34:26.

Lucky first serve that time from Babos. She will get another crack at

:34:27.:34:39.

it. And a second ace. No arguing that time. Good variation from

:34:40.:34:49.

Babos. That one going out wide on the line.

:34:50.:35:13.

That was a terrific return of serve. Set point.

:35:14.:35:25.

SUE BARKER: We will be back for the second set a the moment but we can

:35:26.:35:31.

take you around the grounds and show you what is happening elsewhere.

:35:32.:35:37.

Grigg Dimitrov, seeded 13 at the Championships, involved in a first

:35:38.:35:43.

set tie-break. A real battle against Diego Schwartzman and you can watch

:35:44.:35:50.

that on the red button. And a break of serve in that tie-break. And

:35:51.:35:59.

Feliciano Lopez, champion at Queen's, always a danger on the

:36:00.:36:04.

grass. Seeded 19. Early stages of that match. You can follow it on the

:36:05.:36:13.

BBC Sport website. Dominic Thiem, one of the rising stars of the game.

:36:14.:36:18.

He has had a terrific season of the clay-court.

:36:19.:36:41.

Light beginning to change across Centre Court. Still bathed in

:36:42.:36:50.

sunshine. Hats and sunglasses still being worn. An entertaining first

:36:51.:36:52.

set of tennis. Wozniacki has played explosive

:36:53.:37:18.

tennis at times. And having won the first set, the break of serve, she

:37:19.:37:25.

will to open the second. Giving her an immediate advantage potentially.

:37:26.:37:54.

Babos immediately on the attack. And a smile. No change in tactics

:37:55.:38:05.

though. Going for broke on every shot. Pretty much.

:38:06.:38:38.

Lucky to get away with a second serve, Wozniacki. 72 mph. Babos had

:38:39.:38:48.

a good crack at it but went straight back to Wozniacki. That is part of

:38:49.:38:53.

her game that can get tight. That one hitting the frame.

:38:54.:39:22.

A terrific start to the second set for the Hungarian. Three break

:39:23.:39:28.

points right here. Wozniacki is unhappy. She is

:39:29.:39:42.

managing the ball kids at her end, making sure they have balls on the

:39:43.:39:44.

correct side. She is quite bossy. She did not know much about that,

:39:45.:40:00.

Wozniacki. She throws the ball away in disgust. She has not made any

:40:01.:40:06.

friends in that opening game. Certainly with the way she was

:40:07.:40:13.

instructing the ball boys and girls to go about their business and the

:40:14.:40:17.

way she threw the ball away in disgust. The Centre Court crowd will

:40:18.:40:25.

get behind the underdog Babos here. This is Caroline throwing the ball

:40:26.:40:32.

away in disgust after losing her serve to love.

:40:33.:40:38.

Caroline Wozniacki wants the ball kids to have the balls on one side

:40:39.:41:29.

and Babos wants them to have the balls on the other side. They cannot

:41:30.:41:30.

win. Good variation and good use of the

:41:31.:42:08.

court by Babos. The slice short and wide. Very effective on the grass

:42:09.:42:12.

court. It was long. Up until then she

:42:13.:42:35.

played the perfect point. It was not a confident looking volley. She came

:42:36.:42:39.

to the net but did not look committed to the shot.

:42:40.:42:59.

Wozniacki knew that was a chance to engineer a break point.

:43:00.:43:26.

Babos has a head of steam in this set.

:43:27.:43:41.

Now the ball crew at the other end will have to get used to Wozniacki's

:43:42.:43:55.

preferences for which side the supply will come from.

:43:56.:44:20.

She is not a happy camper, Caroline Wozniacki. That is more words to the

:44:21.:44:27.

umpire. The balls are not where they want to be. She was complaining to

:44:28.:44:32.

the umpire about something and the crowd automatically see that. That

:44:33.:44:38.

is why they have been giving her a hard time. She is a bit grumpy.

:44:39.:44:53.

Another wayward volley. She has enjoyed a lot of success as doubles

:44:54.:45:10.

player as junior and senior. But her volleys, you would expect to be

:45:11.:45:12.

better. The ball kids have it sussed.

:45:13.:45:35.

Putting the ball is exactly where Wozniacki wants them. She has got

:45:36.:45:36.

them drilled. That was a beautiful shot. Admired

:45:37.:46:15.

by the father of Caroline. Did a good job of staying at the point,

:46:16.:46:20.

Wozniacki. This one on the full stretch, dragging it back with the

:46:21.:46:21.

left hand. Wozniacki scores her first game of

:46:22.:46:29.

the second set. We talked about Caroline Wozniacki

:46:30.:46:42.

being number one in the world back in 2010. She has not won a major. I

:46:43.:46:51.

think that starts to weigh on you. People ask you the same question.

:46:52.:46:55.

Will this be the major, will this be the one you will win? This year's

:46:56.:47:01.

Wimbledon is so open and I think everyone is feeling back. When I

:47:02.:47:05.

look at Pliskova, the best result she has had at Wimbledon is the

:47:06.:47:10.

second round. We only have two former champions in the draw, with

:47:11.:47:14.

venous and Kvitova. That feeling makes everybody a little bit jumpy

:47:15.:47:20.

and uneasy in the locker room. Caroline Wozniacki, I think she has

:47:21.:47:26.

not settled today. She is up a set but I have never seen her complain

:47:27.:47:31.

so much, to the ball kids, the umpire, telling him to do his job,

:47:32.:47:36.

to pay attention. She looks unsettled. Normally more composed on

:47:37.:47:41.

court. She obviously thinks this could be her year. A lot of people

:47:42.:47:48.

feel that! Shrewd observers think it could be Kvitova's opportunity for a

:47:49.:47:55.

third. She has won a grass court tournament in Birmingham. Wozniacki

:47:56.:47:59.

was in the final at Eastbourne, beaten by Pliskova, who could be a

:48:00.:48:03.

favourite. It is wide open, as you say.

:48:04.:48:19.

The forehand has been a profitable area. The eighth winner on that

:48:20.:48:23.

wing. Two good. Great disguise on the

:48:24.:49:05.

forehand side. -- too good. Another ace and another love service

:49:06.:49:39.

game from Babos. Her serve is really firing now. She did not make a

:49:40.:49:41.

single ace in the first set. First ace for Wozniacki, closely

:49:42.:50:46.

followed by a second. Bob a hat-trick here. -- she is on a

:50:47.:50:51.

hat-trick here. A brutal return of serve. 2-D Babos

:50:52.:51:25.

forehand. -- it was 2-D Babos forehand. Absolutely unloaded.

:51:26.:51:31.

Wozniacki will still be confident of holding serve. 40-15.

:51:32.:52:09.

Babos with the break of serve, which she set up early in this second set.

:52:10.:52:23.

Pretty much three quarters full, possibly more, on Centre Court. A

:52:24.:52:29.

lot of play on the outside courts. Court Number Two alongside Court 12,

:52:30.:52:33.

on the left, the newest of the big show courts. Number three, saw the

:52:34.:52:40.

longest match of the tournament so far, four and a half hours last

:52:41.:52:44.

night with Aljaz Bedene coming through against Ivo Karlovic. And

:52:45.:52:49.

Centre Court with the concertina trademark roof. Court Number One

:52:50.:52:55.

will have a similar roof when it is completed and ready to go in two

:52:56.:53:11.

years, 2019. The work is under way. They only have a nine-month window

:53:12.:53:16.

to build with eight giant cranes around the court, which get taken

:53:17.:53:20.

down. They need three months of clear space to prepare for the

:53:21.:53:23.

Championships and clear up afterwards. It is a bit of a rush

:53:24.:53:26.

once the building recommences. Wozniacki is happy to be wearing a

:53:27.:54:22.

visor at this end of the court. It is still in bright sunshine.

:54:23.:54:28.

The difficulty at this time of day is when the ball comes from the sun

:54:29.:54:36.

to the shade and from the shade to the sun. That will last a little bit

:54:37.:54:40.

longer yet. And the lob is wide. Another

:54:41.:54:59.

efficient service game for Timea Babos.

:55:00.:55:07.

Wozniacki unable to do any damage on the Babos service game. New balls

:55:08.:55:14.

being produced by the hard-working ball crew. They have been given a

:55:15.:55:21.

new routine they did not practice during their weeks of training.

:55:22.:55:28.

Tonight Caroline Wozniacki has asked them to roll the ball is along the

:55:29.:55:35.

back of the court. And now she has them positioned in an irregular

:55:36.:55:46.

area. I don't remember ever really seeing this sort of performance

:55:47.:55:50.

going on between the player and the ball crew out here. Very irregular.

:55:51.:56:35.

Too good. It was two flats. Too hard. -- it was too flat. A simple

:56:36.:56:53.

game plan for Babos. Hit everything as hard as you can and hopefully it

:56:54.:56:54.

does not come back. She has decided to challenge. After

:56:55.:57:20.

she looked up at her coach. He is in a position to see if it is in or

:57:21.:57:22.

out. What a point. Extraordinary tennis.

:57:23.:58:29.

A left-handed shot played by Babos in the middle of all the fact. The

:58:30.:58:36.

problem was on the return of serve, Babos hitter backhand when she

:58:37.:58:40.

probably should have hit a forehand and then she had to scurry to the

:58:41.:58:44.

left and that is way she played the left-handed forehand and then she

:58:45.:58:48.

never stopped running after that moment. She is smiling. I think she

:58:49.:58:53.

is pleased with herself after pulling off this bit of magic.

:58:54.:59:01.

Wozniacki's overhead. Babos playback cricket shot and set off in pursuit

:59:02.:59:12.

of this. Which she made. Your point, your game. This is the left-handed

:59:13.:59:18.

shot. Played it with her hand halfway up the racket. Made it

:59:19.:59:25.

count. It is still going. She is laughing about it mid-rally.

:59:26.:59:45.

We have got a seriously grumpy player at one end and a really quite

:59:46.:59:54.

happy one at the other. Wozniacki is still down a break.

:59:55.:00:14.

She is getting all the luck. That was the first first serve she has

:00:15.:00:23.

missed in this second set. And she still comes away with the point,

:00:24.:00:26.

helped by a slice of good fortune. That was Babos' point the whole way.

:00:27.:00:55.

She ran into the ball and left herself. Just butchered the volley.

:00:56.:01:40.

Good strike. The crowd enjoyed that. They want another set. They haven't

:01:41.:01:54.

had as much tennis as expected because of the retirements. The

:01:55.:01:56.

match deserves a final set. It was right underneath the umpire's

:01:57.:02:55.

chair. He didn't overrule. Wozniacki felt she got a bit of the line. But

:02:56.:03:08.

the line judge was correct. So Wozniacki will have two serve this

:03:09.:03:20.

day in this second set. Everything organised with the ball crew be hind

:03:21.:03:22.

her. Quick serving. 106 mph. Just short

:03:23.:04:17.

of her fastest serve which has been 107.

:04:18.:04:29.

Babos will have two serve for the second set, if she is to force the

:04:30.:04:34.

decider. Fast game. Fast match, this. One

:04:35.:04:48.

hour and six minutes and we have completed almost two full set. Babos

:04:49.:04:53.

has played some excellent tennis throughout. The serve has been good.

:04:54.:04:59.

Four aces and no double faults. She has hit most of her first serves,

:05:00.:05:05.

particularly in this second set, the numbers have been solid. The winners

:05:06.:05:10.

have outnumbered the unforced errors from Babos, which is key. 22 to 17.

:05:11.:05:17.

It is all about execution. The game plan is clear. She wants to hit big

:05:18.:05:22.

from both sides and she hits the ball very flat, so she will make

:05:23.:05:26.

some errors. But she figures that is the best chance to win against

:05:27.:05:30.

someone who has just great retrieving skills in Caroline

:05:31.:05:38.

Wozniacki. Rarely a cloud in the sky. The weather has been kind to

:05:39.:05:42.

the first week of Wimbledon. There may be a shower tomorrow but the

:05:43.:05:43.

roof has remained open throughout. Can Timea Babos get this second set

:05:44.:05:55.

finished? Serving for it at 5-4. It is not the site is served to when

:05:56.:06:47.

you have a second serve. She generates so much more pace,

:06:48.:06:51.

Wozniacki of the backhand side. She finds it much more difficult to

:06:52.:06:53.

generate pace on the forehand side. Wozniacki complaining about the

:06:54.:07:08.

like. She is complaining about lots of things the night. This time it

:07:09.:07:16.

was the son in her eyes as she tried to play the lob.

:07:17.:07:54.

Terrific point. 15 strokes in total. The coach is on his feet. Did a

:07:55.:08:06.

great job with this backhand, Babos. That one there. Just an impossible

:08:07.:08:13.

shot for Wozniacki to get that back. Two set points.

:08:14.:08:33.

That was out, wasn't it? No challenge. Babos probably regretting

:08:34.:08:43.

the fact she didn't ask for it to be checked. I think it was probably

:08:44.:08:54.

good. Still with a set point in hand.

:08:55.:09:05.

Wozniacki is getting this one double-checked. Babos and her

:09:06.:09:16.

opponent had to their chairs. All we need is the rubber stamp from

:09:17.:09:19.

Hawk-Eye to confirm it was long. Babos takes the second set. This

:09:20.:09:28.

enthralling contest will be going the distance. One set all on Centre

:09:29.:09:39.

Court. Wozniacki, heading off for a comfort break. Last chance to take a

:09:40.:09:46.

look at the numbers surrounding the second set, which was a terrific

:09:47.:09:51.

watch. Just half a dozen points in that set. Wozniacki didn't have any

:09:52.:10:02.

break points one due to some good serving from Babos. Look at the

:10:03.:10:06.

number from the first serve. 84%, terrific number. And the variation

:10:07.:10:17.

from Wozniacki of her second serve, winning 43% of those points. Has

:10:18.:10:21.

kept the unforced errors to a minimum, Babos. Full credit to Timea

:10:22.:10:32.

Babos. She loses the first set and she stays committed to the cause.

:10:33.:11:03.

SUE BARKER: we have a real match on Centre Court and we will be back

:11:04.:11:09.

with the start of the third set in a moment. Plenty happening on the out

:11:10.:11:15.

caught so as Grigor Dimitrov is going well. He won the first set of

:11:16.:11:23.

the tie-break and leads 5-2. That match is the feature match on the

:11:24.:11:29.

red button. Out on Court Two, and match we were watching earlier and

:11:30.:11:32.

Thomas Berdych has just taken the third set on the tie-break, winning

:11:33.:11:40.

it 7-5. It is Berdych who leads over Jeremy Chardy of France. You can

:11:41.:11:47.

follow that on the BBC Sport website. And Feliciano Lopez, locked

:11:48.:11:51.

in battle with add Rhiannon Mannarino. It is a close one, they

:11:52.:11:58.

have been playing 42 minutes. You can follow that one on the BBC Sport

:11:59.:12:06.

website. We have been talking about Dominic Thiem. Going well against

:12:07.:12:21.

pops a sale. -- proper self. One result, Christine Miller of France

:12:22.:12:29.

is through winning in straight sets over Pauline Parmentier. That was

:12:30.:12:40.

out caught three. All of that happening outside, but on this

:12:41.:12:44.

beautiful evening at Wimbledon, what lovely weather we have had today, we

:12:45.:12:50.

are heading back to Centre Court. COMMENTATOR: ready for the final

:12:51.:12:57.

set. Caroline Wozniacki will serve. An hour and 14 minutes played so

:12:58.:13:03.

far. It has been a brilliant match to watch. Let's hope the intensity

:13:04.:13:11.

levels stay high for the deciding set.

:13:12.:13:48.

Wozniacki started serving first in the second set and that was the game

:13:49.:13:56.

she was broken. She has this final pocket of sunshine to deal with

:13:57.:13:57.

here, making life tricky. She just missed it. She is

:13:58.:14:20.

challenging it. I don't think there will be any joy here for Wozniacki.

:14:21.:14:22.

I think it is wide. Worrying start to the final set. For

:14:23.:14:31.

the number five seed. She needs to make absolutely certain

:14:32.:15:08.

with the second serve. Huge return from Babos. What a start to the

:15:09.:15:21.

final set. The Hungarian's French coach is on his feet again.

:15:22.:15:41.

It is in. Surprised silence from the crowd but it was in an Babos has

:15:42.:15:54.

broken in the opening game of the third and final set. You don't see

:15:55.:16:05.

that happening too often from Caroline Wozniacki. Completely

:16:06.:16:11.

misjudged the return. Maybe she did mis-hit it. Just had enough spin on

:16:12.:16:18.

it to drop quickly and land in. Babos, she is ready for the

:16:19.:16:25.

occasion, isn't she? Not wasting any time on the change of ends. The

:16:26.:16:30.

pressure is on the number five seed, Caroline Wozniacki.

:16:31.:17:14.

110 mph. Right in the corner. Tremendous serve.

:17:15.:17:29.

She is serving beautifully here, full of confidence. 40-0.

:17:30.:17:40.

Opportunity to consolidate the early break of serve.

:17:41.:18:00.

That is Babos' first double fault of the match. Worst times to throw in a

:18:01.:18:12.

double fault. 40-0 up, she might get away with it.

:18:13.:18:49.

Nervous looking people in that Wozniacki connections box. It is

:18:50.:19:04.

never a comfortable place to sit. In any one's connection box, I don't

:19:05.:19:05.

think. You know what, that is just a

:19:06.:19:33.

really, really poor Polly. She just got so nervous, she had the whole

:19:34.:19:36.

court and a little bit more. -- volley. She just completely just

:19:37.:19:44.

what should the volley. From 40-0 to deuce. The double fault back came at

:19:45.:19:52.

the start of the game, could prove costly.

:19:53.:20:03.

Deep breath, tries to compose herself.

:20:04.:20:21.

Really choking under the pressure here, Timea Babos. You can see that

:20:22.:20:30.

tightness on the backhand volley. When you get tight, everything

:20:31.:20:35.

closes down and your feet don't get to the ball. Her arm was stiff.

:20:36.:20:38.

Break point. Another unforced error. A game that

:20:39.:21:07.

started so well at 40-0 up. A double fault and a succession of unforced

:21:08.:21:11.

errors came back to haunt the Hungarian. The backhand volley and

:21:12.:21:15.

then the short ball, those are the kind of points that give you

:21:16.:21:24.

nightmares. Is that a significant momentum switched towards Caroline

:21:25.:21:29.

Wozniacki? Can she move it along from here? 1-1.

:21:30.:22:13.

That might just restore the confidence of Timea Babos, nice

:22:14.:22:24.

little drop shot. Pressure is a funny thing, where was that type of

:22:25.:22:33.

shot in the first game when she needed it?

:22:34.:22:52.

Her timing is out. She has been making mis-hit, after mis-hit. Using

:22:53.:23:02.

more of the frame van string. -- van.

:23:03.:23:21.

From 40-0 up, she is only won one point since then, Babos. 40-0 in the

:23:22.:23:26.

previous game. Good wheels from Wozniacki but

:23:27.:24:02.

covered well by Babos. Wozniacki get it done. Moves ahead.

:24:03.:24:46.

Final set is on serve at the moment. SUE BARKER: what a fightback from

:24:47.:24:52.

Wozniacki. We will be back in just a moment on Centre Court, but we can

:24:53.:24:56.

show you what we can look forward to tomorrow on the big show courts.

:24:57.:25:01.

Johanna Konta, up against Donna Vekic. They met in the final of

:25:02.:25:07.

Nottingham and Donna Vekic won that one. She thinks the pressure is all

:25:08.:25:15.

on Johanna Konta tomorrow. Andy Murray up against Dustin Brown, one

:25:16.:25:18.

of the great showman. He put out Rafael Nadal a few years ago here,

:25:19.:25:24.

so he is a dangerous opponent. And then Rafael Nadal takes on Donald

:25:25.:25:30.

Young of the United States. Over on Court Number One Kei Nishikori takes

:25:31.:25:33.

on Sir Guy Stakhovsky, but we know him from putting out Roger Federer

:25:34.:25:46.

here. Over on Court Number Two, Heather Watson, she is enjoying a

:25:47.:25:59.

return to form. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic, who looked very

:26:00.:26:05.

good in his opening round. Don't count him out of this tournament.

:26:06.:26:13.

Plenty of sunshine around here. Back we go to Centre Court.

:26:14.:26:29.

COMMENTATOR: This corner of sunshine continuing to confound Caroline

:26:30.:26:39.

Wozniacki. Another ten minutes and Centre Court will be completely

:26:40.:26:40.

shaded. Babos is targeting that area, but

:26:41.:26:57.

not accurately. The execution is a little bit of from Babos in these

:26:58.:27:02.

last couple of games. She has to keep it in the back of her mind,

:27:03.:27:06.

even though she had the early break, it is still on serve at this point.

:27:07.:27:16.

Tried to go out of the side exit with the first serve.

:27:17.:27:36.

That was the best clean winner we have seen from Wozniacki for a

:27:37.:27:43.

while. Wozniacki in these last few games has gone more aggressive. I

:27:44.:27:47.

know she didn't have to do much in that game that Babos gifted to her,

:27:48.:27:51.

but looking to be more in the court, Wozniacki.

:27:52.:28:10.

Worrying time now the Babos. Two break points the Wozniacki. The ebb

:28:11.:28:20.

and flow of this match has been extraordinary. Wozniacki, on an

:28:21.:28:27.

upward trajectory here. Having missed a few straightforward

:28:28.:28:54.

volleys, you are never sure whether Babos is going to get this right. On

:28:55.:28:59.

this occasion, all is well. The last straightforward volley, where she

:29:00.:29:06.

missed and she had the whole court...

:29:07.:29:23.

Caroline Wozniacki would normally have had bad back. Normally easy

:29:24.:29:32.

pickings for her on that backhand side.

:29:33.:30:05.

He has not been on his feet for a while. His arms folded. His poker

:30:06.:30:16.

face. He knows his player is in trouble. Break point.

:30:17.:30:31.

That was the worst of the lot, and there have been plenty. That is just

:30:32.:30:39.

pressure, that is plain and simple pressure. She tries to steer the

:30:40.:30:47.

volley. If you gave heard this volley 50 times, she would make it

:30:48.:30:52.

49. She was just too careful. She looked up at her coach. He had his

:30:53.:31:01.

head in his hands. That horrendous mistake from Babos has given

:31:02.:31:07.

Wozniacki a 3-1 lead in the final set will stop the Dane is now

:31:08.:31:15.

preparing to serve for a 4-1 advantage.

:31:16.:31:32.

The crowd are doing their best to help her along, as well.

:31:33.:32:54.

The contrast of fortunes for Wozniacki and her father. She seems

:32:55.:33:14.

to be going from strength to strength.

:33:15.:33:32.

Wozniacki absolutely dominant at present. 4-1 in front in the final

:33:33.:34:15.

set. She has been given the opportunity, Caroline Wozniacki, to

:34:16.:34:19.

find her way back into this match and she has grabbed it with both

:34:20.:34:26.

hands. She lost the opening serve of this third set. Babos has 40-0.

:34:27.:34:32.

There was a double fault, a bad volley. A bad shot on the forehand

:34:33.:34:38.

and a short ball she missed and she has not been able to shake off that

:34:39.:34:44.

game, Babos. Good wheels from Wozniacki to cover this and whippet

:34:45.:34:50.

cross-court. She has not been able to shake off the bat shots and the

:34:51.:34:56.

unforced errors are coming thick and fast from Babos. Wozniacki is a

:34:57.:35:01.

tough competitor. You cannot give her too many opportunities.

:35:02.:35:14.

Generous applause for Timea Babos. Her coach trying his best to do what

:35:15.:35:28.

he can. But limited input from the coach. New balls.

:35:29.:35:48.

Terrific shot, Wozniacki. It drew applause from Timea Babos, that

:35:49.:36:01.

shot. Look how much court she has to cover. Not only does she get it

:36:02.:36:05.

back, she hits the winner, the flick of the wrist at the last minute. Too

:36:06.:36:11.

good. Not an easy volley, but one that she

:36:12.:37:09.

would expect to make. There are no free points for Babos, just

:37:10.:37:13.

excellent court coverage from Wozniacki, good anticipation, and

:37:14.:37:14.

making Babos play at everything. Only her second double fault. But it

:37:15.:37:39.

gives Caroline Wozniacki two break points. If she takes one of them,

:37:40.:37:45.

she will serve for the match. And the belief is gone for Babos.

:37:46.:38:02.

Her mind is in the locker room. And it looks as if it will not be long

:38:03.:38:12.

until her body is there, too. One hour and 40 minutes. All sorts of

:38:13.:38:19.

things have happened this evening. It has been thoroughly entertaining.

:38:20.:38:26.

Caroline Wozniacki one game away from finishing it off. Serving for

:38:27.:38:28.

the match. Well, she is on a losing streak,

:38:29.:39:22.

Timea Babos. She has been struggling to get out of the first round of all

:39:23.:39:27.

tournament she has played in since April. This one in motion leak it

:39:28.:39:31.

may be hard to get over, having been in such a commanding position. --

:39:32.:39:40.

this one emotionally may be hard to get over.

:39:41.:40:18.

An ace from Wozniacki, her third. She now has two match points.

:40:19.:40:39.

Back aces. To wrap up this first-round match for Caroline

:40:40.:40:48.

Wozniacki. Really good entertainment on Centre Court. Wozniacki hat to

:40:49.:40:56.

fight back and her concentration seemed to waver in the second set,

:40:57.:41:01.

but she has bounced back to take the bird. Quickly and comfortably, 6-1.

:41:02.:41:08.

And take her place in the second round at Wimbledon. I feel a certain

:41:09.:41:13.

sympathy for Timea Babos, however, who seemed to be in a good place.

:41:14.:41:21.

You look back on matches and sometimes you may not agree on the

:41:22.:41:25.

turning point, but certainly the turning point in this match was the

:41:26.:41:32.

second game of the third set, where Babos had just broken, she had 40-0,

:41:33.:41:39.

there was a double fault and bad volley and an awkward looking

:41:40.:41:44.

forehand shot and from that moment, she was unable to recover. Having

:41:45.:41:51.

said that, Caroline Wozniacki, she has not been number one in the world

:41:52.:41:57.

and had 25 titles for nothing. She is tough to beat and was given an

:41:58.:42:02.

opportunity to find her way back in the match and she grabbed it with

:42:03.:42:07.

both hands and she ran. A long line of autograph hunters of all ages.

:42:08.:42:13.

With balls and programmes and tickets to sign.

:42:14.:42:20.

That was a good bonus match for the Centre Court crowd. It was a fixture

:42:21.:42:42.

they were not expecting. It was added to the schedule following

:42:43.:42:50.

withdrawals in the two Myanmar -- men's matches earlier and it was

:42:51.:42:54.

worth waiting for with Caroline Wozniacki taking the victory.

:42:55.:42:59.

She is talking now to Phil Jones. Well done on getting through. There

:43:00.:43:08.

seemed to be a turning point at the start of the third set, second game.

:43:09.:43:13.

How did you reverse the momentum she built? I am not sure, I kept

:43:14.:43:20.

fighting for every point. I was down a break early in both sets and she

:43:21.:43:27.

had 40-0 on her serve and somehow I managed to pull it out and got over

:43:28.:43:31.

to the easier side to play on with more shade and I started hitting the

:43:32.:43:36.

ball better and more precisely. You are carrying something here from

:43:37.:43:43.

your fine performance at Eastbourne. Did you feel in the same rich vein

:43:44.:43:48.

of form today? I feel like I am in good shape at the first round is

:43:49.:43:53.

always tricky and she is a great player, she serves big and I knew I

:43:54.:43:57.

had to be ready from the first ball and she gave me a lot of

:43:58.:44:02.

competition. When you are in a floating match, you do not know the

:44:03.:44:06.

court you will play on and you are put on Centre Court. I love playing

:44:07.:44:11.

on Centre Court, it is a special feeling to be out there and I love

:44:12.:44:15.

being out there and it is definitely what we train for, to be out there.

:44:16.:44:21.

In terms of what you feel you can do in the tournament, 11 years you with

:44:22.:44:26.

junior champion, I know you love the place, you must feel good about it?

:44:27.:44:36.

Yes, I love playing on grass and I love Wimbledon. I take it one match

:44:37.:44:40.

at a time. Today was tough and I am happy to be through and hopefully I

:44:41.:44:45.

can get good recovery. Well done. SUE BARKER: Caroline will be glad to

:44:46.:44:50.

get that under her belt. A difficult opponent. Her strength is she is a

:44:51.:44:55.

tough competitor and she showed that in the final set, reeling off six

:44:56.:45:00.

games in a wrote in the final set. She will be back for round two. We

:45:01.:45:08.

will drop in on Court Number Two, Tomas Berdych against Jeremy Chardy.

:45:09.:45:14.

Berdych serving for the match. 5-4 he leaves in the fourth set.

:45:15.:45:29.

COMMENTATOR: Thomas Berdych with his 12th ace of the match. Closing in on

:45:30.:45:37.

the finishing line. In this first-round encounter we have seen

:45:38.:45:38.

some tennis of the highest quality. Berdych has been under the cosh

:45:39.:46:04.

throughout with five break point opportunities, the French man, and

:46:05.:46:10.

he has only managed to convert one of them. That is a synopsis of what

:46:11.:46:17.

has been going on here. But Berdych has remained watertight throughout,

:46:18.:46:22.

just incredibly solid. In stark contrast, Tomas Berdych has created

:46:23.:46:27.

two break point opportunities but he has converted both of them.

:46:28.:46:44.

Terrific hitting from beyond the baseline. Bringing up three match

:46:45.:46:48.

points. It has been a high-level match with

:46:49.:46:58.

more winners than on forced errors throughout the match.

:46:59.:47:19.

Tomas Berdych and Jeremy Chardy receiving a standing ovation from

:47:20.:47:28.

the capacity crowd. Tomas Berdych, the number in Leven seed progresses

:47:29.:47:34.

to the second round with a four set victory over Jeremy Chardy. 6-3,

:47:35.:47:44.

3-6, 7-6, 6-4. It took him two hours and 22 minutes and he extends his

:47:45.:47:49.

perfect run in a five match head-to-head rivalry over Jeremy

:47:50.:47:54.

Chardy. The French man played sublime tennis in sets two and

:47:55.:47:59.

three. A wave of concentration in set four. Tomas Berdych progresses

:48:00.:48:06.

to round two. SUE BARKER: He is such a big hitter,

:48:07.:48:12.

a former finalist. Never write him off. There has been some tough

:48:13.:48:20.

first-round matches. Berdych against Chardy, such an experienced player.

:48:21.:48:24.

I wanted to show you the end of that one. Another match point to bring

:48:25.:48:29.

you. Bacsinszky, the number 19 seed, she has gone through against the

:48:30.:48:38.

Olympic gold men -- gold medallist Monica Puig.

:48:39.:48:50.

Now we will head to court 16 where the Queen's champion Feliciano Lopez

:48:51.:49:01.

is playing. It has been that sort of day. We have had one injury after

:49:02.:49:06.

another and this is Lopez with the trainer. He has taken painkillers

:49:07.:49:11.

and had treatment for a foot injury. He won the opening set but he

:49:12.:49:22.

dropped the second set 6-1. Two lefty players with big serves. Will

:49:23.:49:28.

he be able to continue? We will see if the treatment will help. The

:49:29.:49:38.

commentators, Jamie Baker and Dan Lobb.

:49:39.:49:43.

COMMENTATOR: The medical time-out is coming to an end. The physio is

:49:44.:49:49.

still chatting to Feliciano Lopez. There was a lot of manipulation on

:49:50.:49:54.

the left foot. Impossible to say where or what the injury is. There

:49:55.:50:04.

was a slight slip from Lopez in the second game of the match, but that

:50:05.:50:08.

is the only thing we have seen that might have led to this. He got

:50:09.:50:12.

through a tough first set in 50 minutes. Took it 7-5. Early in the

:50:13.:50:22.

second set, he started to show signs of discomfort. And some kind of

:50:23.:50:26.

ailment. That second set went quickly, 26 minutes.

:50:27.:50:43.

Just long. There is no Hawk-Eye on Court number 16.

:50:44.:50:58.

Mannarino checked that the ball was long.

:50:59.:51:48.

Lopez showing great defence and then having an opportunity to win the

:51:49.:51:56.

point. Mannarino perhaps a little too negative when he had the chance

:51:57.:52:00.

to finish things off. Trying to do the right things though, Jamie.

:52:01.:52:03.

Mannarino wanting to get Lopez on the move.

:52:04.:52:20.

There is that tricky serve we have seen so often in the match. The

:52:21.:52:30.

first time we have seen Lopez attack it. Probably the right thing to do,

:52:31.:52:32.

but just missing on that occasion. He is looking comfortable in this

:52:33.:53:01.

rally. He is a tricky player, Mannarino. He has so many different

:53:02.:53:11.

shots at his disposal. And he likes a slice serve. That is never coming

:53:12.:53:22.

back. Such an acute angle. Ace number six for the French man. 29

:53:23.:53:33.

years of age. He made the final of a brand-new grass court event in the

:53:34.:53:43.

build-up to Wimbledon. In Turkey. He lost to a Japanese player in the

:53:44.:53:49.

final. Three very impressive wins against Coric, Verdasco and Seppi.

:53:50.:53:59.

So he is in pretty good form on this surface.

:54:00.:54:07.

The reaction volley from a man who is also in pretty good nick. The

:54:08.:54:20.

crowd enjoyed that. It was a good pick-up from Lopez but Mannarino did

:54:21.:54:22.

the hard work. Every inch of the court being used.

:54:23.:55:04.

This time, Lopez unable to deal with some more wicked ground strokes from

:55:05.:55:05.

Mannarino. He is economical with his movement.

:55:06.:55:18.

He reads the game well. He is seeing the ball like a football at the

:55:19.:55:19.

moment. That was one of those slightly laxer

:55:20.:55:50.

days local -- lackadaisical forehands.

:55:51.:55:59.

Has been struggling with the sun, but it looks as if it is finally out

:56:00.:56:05.

of his way. It sounds like another drop that

:56:06.:56:26.

one, in the crowd. The crowd have dropped a few off the

:56:27.:56:47.

racket of Lopez. Maybe they can blame the sun.

:56:48.:57:01.

A beautiful angle on the forehand side from Mannarino. It is that

:57:02.:57:13.

wristy forehand that allows him to play the shots. Look at how low the

:57:14.:57:19.

swing is. There is not a lot that can go wrong with that. And he has

:57:20.:57:21.

another break point. Lopez is not at all happy with that

:57:22.:57:35.

baseline call. Mannarino's return was called in. There is no Hawk-Eye.

:57:36.:57:37.

He cannot challenge. Well, it has gone. He has lost his

:57:38.:57:58.

serve again. He has too regrouped. -- regroup. That is the fourth break

:57:59.:58:05.

of serve that Lopez has suffered. Was he aware at that point that

:58:06.:58:23.

there was no challenge? It did not look like it. Feliciano Lopez is the

:58:24.:58:39.

Queen's champion. He lost in the final of Stuttgart. The perfect

:58:40.:58:40.

build-up to this tournament. It looks like he will try to change

:58:41.:59:07.

things up as best he can to get out of this pickle, but he is not moving

:59:08.:59:13.

well. You saw him moving gingerly after playing the drop shot.

:59:14.:00:06.

Really nice touch from Lopez again but he is moving gingerly. It looks

:00:07.:00:14.

like he is going to have to find a way of doing as little running as

:00:15.:00:17.

possible. Very tricky against Mannarino.

:00:18.:00:28.

The crowd really enjoying some of these exchanges. It was a good

:00:29.:00:47.

pick-up. Equally good from Mannarino. Look at that on the

:00:48.:00:50.

half-volley. Superb hand skills. That is a disappointing forehand

:00:51.:01:05.

this time from Lopez. Mannarino has done a great job of hanging in there

:01:06.:01:11.

when it has got tight on his own service games.

:01:12.:01:48.

Such clever play from Mannarino. Just moving the ailing Lopez around.

:01:49.:02:03.

Asking all the right questions and the number 19 seed is in a spot of

:02:04.:02:09.

bother out here on Court 16. Mannarino, 3-0 up with a break in

:02:10.:02:12.

the third. Well, if anybody has the game to

:02:13.:02:29.

finish things off quicker than they would like, go for the lines, though

:02:30.:02:37.

for those big shots -- go for those big shots, I guess Lopez would be

:02:38.:02:41.

fairly high on the list. He has got to be served for it, no doubt about

:02:42.:02:45.

that but he would rather not pull the trigger early in the rally. You

:02:46.:02:50.

can see he's got equally a similar amount of graft on his forehand. He

:02:51.:02:55.

would rather be slicing and dicing and working his way into the net may

:02:56.:02:59.

be off the fifth or sixth shot as opposed to the first or second. So

:03:00.:03:04.

if this foot issue or wherever it is, and it certainly looks like it

:03:05.:03:08.

is not going away during this match, he is going to have to alter his

:03:09.:03:11.

game style somehow because at the moment, Mannarino is just making him

:03:12.:03:14.

move far too much. He is too comfortable. The other problem Lopez

:03:15.:03:21.

has is the fact Mannarino just read the game so well. He has the ability

:03:22.:03:25.

to stay one step ahead. So whatever Feliciano Lopez does, it

:03:26.:03:38.

has got to be good to get past this man, who is in a very strong

:03:39.:03:40.

position. His body seems to be letting him

:03:41.:04:13.

down. Just trying to think of positives,

:04:14.:05:58.

Jamie, for Lopez. It is the left foot that is the problem. Because he

:05:59.:06:03.

is a lefty, it is his right leg that is bearing most of the weight on the

:06:04.:06:10.

serve. That hasn't dropped off that much as he flashes a forehand winner

:06:11.:06:13.

and that is what we are talking about, he has the ability to hit

:06:14.:06:16.

those winners from all over the court. So at least he still has his

:06:17.:06:26.

serve. OK, it might not be 100% but a Lopez serve at 80% is still pretty

:06:27.:06:28.

good. APPLAUSE

:06:29.:06:47.

And he still has his sliced backhand and sublime net play.

:06:48.:06:56.

Lopez on the scoreboard in the third set, but he has got to get past this

:06:57.:06:59.

Mannarino serve. One option he has not looked at yet

:07:00.:07:12.

is serve-volley. I don't know how much of a problem that initial two

:07:13.:07:17.

or three steps are but I think his bigger problem, as you say, is going

:07:18.:07:19.

to be on the return games. Well, you bet your bottom dollar

:07:20.:07:41.

that Feliciano Lopez is trying to figure out how he's going to get

:07:42.:07:42.

through this successfully. Brilliant. APPLAUSE

:07:43.:07:52.

Absolutely brilliant. He read that so well. He was on his

:07:53.:08:11.

way, crosscourt, covering the passing shot. One of the best four

:08:12.:08:15.

years -- one of the best volleyers. I would give up on that serve, you

:08:16.:09:10.

know. How do you go about returning serve like that, that angle is so

:09:11.:09:17.

acute, so much spin, it stays low. Oh, it's horrible!

:09:18.:09:33.

Just thinking also on that backhand slice, he really does have two plant

:09:34.:09:39.

the left foot down and maybe that will have an impact. It is such an

:09:40.:09:47.

important shop for him. -- important shot.

:09:48.:09:57.

Mannarino still a break-up and if he keeps on serving like that, then the

:09:58.:10:08.

third set is his. Marc Lopez, there are, with the

:10:09.:10:26.

sunglasses on the top of his head. Feliciano Lopez's doubles partner

:10:27.:10:29.

but no relation, one of the best doubles partnerships in the world,

:10:30.:10:40.

and to his left is Feliciano Lopez's coach, Jose. Nothing they can do, of

:10:41.:10:50.

course. But it is... Very much a team game for these individual

:10:51.:10:56.

players, isn't it? They will be feeling frustrated, worried, as

:10:57.:11:03.

anybody else. Yeah, and having made the decision, you know, he's in the

:11:04.:11:07.

grass court form of his life, coming in from Stuttgart and winning at

:11:08.:11:12.

Queen's, the highs of that and as a team, making the decision not to

:11:13.:11:16.

play Eastbourne to minimise the risk something this happening, it does

:11:17.:11:22.

seem like he has had a real stroke of bad luck somewhere at the start

:11:23.:11:26.

of this match. It just looked so innocuous, if it was indeed that.

:11:27.:11:30.

This is not something which has broken down over the course of the

:11:31.:11:36.

last three or four weeks when he has been playing a lot of matches. So

:11:37.:11:41.

therefore, it is not about conditioning. It is just bad luck. I

:11:42.:11:46.

think something has been picked up. As you say, probably early on in

:11:47.:11:49.

this match. He is still there, though. Obviously, it is one of

:11:50.:11:56.

those days where there is something in the air. We have had our fair

:11:57.:12:06.

share of retirements. O! How is your timing, Mr Mannarino? Yeah, pretty

:12:07.:12:09.

decent. You could hear that Rand and sheer

:12:10.:12:23.

-- random cheer putting Lopez off. They do say, though where the

:12:24.:13:03.

wounded animal. It can be difficult, carded, to play against a player who

:13:04.:13:07.

is obviously struggling? Mannarino so far is doing a fantastic job.

:13:08.:13:18.

I was just about to mention that. Often, it is not that easy but

:13:19.:13:27.

Mannarino has missed the court a couple of times in the last 45

:13:28.:13:29.

minutes. He has dealt with it tremendously.

:13:30.:13:37.

You can see Feliciano Lopez going for broke on the forehand. But it is

:13:38.:13:50.

a double break, now, to Mannarino, ranked 51 in the world. He has been

:13:51.:13:53.

as high as number 27. I think he's going to spend the next

:13:54.:14:04.

game thinking about whether he can even continue. It is not looking

:14:05.:14:11.

good. Well, we have seen one set of treatment. Just waiting for the new

:14:12.:14:16.

balls to come out. The doctor administered what we assumed were

:14:17.:14:23.

painkillers. Maybe he will call for the trainer again. You just hope

:14:24.:14:29.

that he isn't forced to retire. I have to say, this is difficult to

:14:30.:16:03.

watch having seen what he produced it Queen's a few weeks ago. It isn't

:16:04.:16:09.

nice to see someone who clearly is unable to get anywhere near where

:16:10.:16:11.

they want to be. It is not as if he can't move at

:16:12.:16:33.

all. You know, he's definitely hampered. He's not able to in the

:16:34.:16:37.

way he wants but it looks to me as though he's still trying to figure

:16:38.:16:40.

out a way to get through this as best he can with the pain that he

:16:41.:16:45.

in. But for now, it is a third... A set point for the third set, I

:16:46.:16:49.

should say and finished with an ace. SUE BARKER: It is not looking good

:16:50.:17:09.

for Feliciano Lopez but looking good for Mannarino, winning the last two

:17:10.:17:14.

sets 6-1, 6-1 and a foot is travelling Lopez so we will leave

:17:15.:17:17.

this match to go elsewhere but we will keep you up-to-date with the

:17:18.:17:21.

progress if Feliciano Lopez gets back into the match. We will keep

:17:22.:17:24.

you up-to-date with this one and it is on the red button. Let's take a

:17:25.:17:29.

look at a few results which finished late this evening and first up,

:17:30.:17:34.

Grigor Dimitrov, the semifinalist three years ago, winning in straight

:17:35.:17:37.

sets over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina. Dimitrov, who had such a

:17:38.:17:43.

great start to the year, winning the tournament in Brisbane and getting

:17:44.:17:46.

to the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing to Nadal in five sets.

:17:47.:17:50.

He has had a good year and had a good run at Queen's and here through

:17:51.:17:54.

to the second round in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. Dominic Thiem

:17:55.:18:03.

is also in straight sets, the 23-year-old defeating Vasek Pospisil

:18:04.:18:07.

of Canada, who had a very oppressive season on the clay court and now he

:18:08.:18:10.

has started well on the grass, one of the up-and-coming players from

:18:11.:18:16.

Austria, seeded eighth at the Championships, through to face

:18:17.:18:18.

Gilles Simon of France in the next round. Everyone enjoying that out on

:18:19.:18:24.

Court Number One today. And big serving John Isner at match point

:18:25.:18:30.

against American Taylor Fritz, two Americans battling it out on the 4th

:18:31.:18:35.

of July and John Isner won it in straight sets. Not a long match this

:18:36.:18:38.

time, famous for that marathon with Nicolas Mahut but through in

:18:39.:18:45.

straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3, so the 23rd seeded through. -- seed is

:18:46.:18:53.

through. Everybody still milling around here at Wimbledon. Many

:18:54.:18:58.

making their way home. Still very busy on the Hill, enjoying tennis

:18:59.:19:01.

and more tennis is being played, only a few courts in action now but

:19:02.:19:06.

on Court Number Two, we are going to head out to see is that Lana

:19:07.:19:13.

Kuznetsova -- Svetlana Kuznetsova, the three-time quarterfinalist, and

:19:14.:19:17.

winner of the French Open in 2009, taking on a qualifier, and we know

:19:18.:19:21.

how dangerous they can be, 22-year-old Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.

:19:22.:19:30.

Kuznetsova is the seed, number seven at this year's championship so we

:19:31.:19:33.

are going to drop in on this one with Annabel Croft and James

:19:34.:19:34.

Burridge. JAMES BURRIDGE: a really exciting

:19:35.:19:49.

prospect, Ons Jabeur, ranked just outside the top 100 but with a

:19:50.:19:56.

really crafty tennis game. Last taking an top players. As already

:19:57.:20:03.

proven her work this season. And with shots like that, you can

:20:04.:20:09.

understand why. Beat Cibulkova at Roland Garros a month or so ago,

:20:10.:20:14.

making her way to the third round. Annabel, it's going to be

:20:15.:20:20.

interesting. ANNABEL CROFT: It's going to be fabulous, and in the

:20:21.:20:23.

first few games already we have seen so much creative flair from Ons

:20:24.:20:31.

Jabeur. She has got lovely, silky hand skills. We have seen some drop

:20:32.:20:35.

shots, some slices, she can really flatten the ball and be aggressive.

:20:36.:20:40.

She will give Kuznetsova plenty to think about out here.

:20:41.:20:51.

Came through qualifying without losing a set. Won nine of her last

:20:52.:20:59.

12 matches. Qualifiers can be so dangerous.

:21:00.:21:19.

O, not by much! We have seen at a couple of times where she has

:21:20.:21:28.

approached into the forehand corner, Kuznetsova, with the sliced backhand

:21:29.:21:32.

and both times, she has come out winning the point. She is really

:21:33.:21:36.

taking her game to the Grand Slam champion.

:21:37.:21:42.

Lovely point. APPLAUSE You can just see the hands and the

:21:43.:21:57.

finesse of both players come here. That broadcasts from the crowd

:21:58.:22:00.

because she's got the kind of game with the firepower and creative

:22:01.:22:03.

flair. She is an inventive tennis player.

:22:04.:22:18.

O, she just missed! Tennis players tend to prefer to go side to side

:22:19.:23:00.

across the baseline and what Ons Jabeur has been doing is drawing is

:23:01.:23:03.

that Lana Kuznetsova up, back and across and changing directions. She

:23:04.:23:10.

has put her in all sorts of uncomfortable places. First break

:23:11.:23:14.

point to defend. Decent first serve and look at the frustration on

:23:15.:23:16.

Kuznetsova's face. Not a huge serve, is it? It is kind

:23:17.:23:40.

of a very loose, languid style, kind of effortless. No tension in her

:23:41.:23:45.

game. She had almost too much time, then,

:23:46.:24:02.

she was lining it up before the ball was at her.

:24:03.:24:14.

Kuznetsova has definitely struggled on the return of serve, given away

:24:15.:24:18.

quite a few unforced errors off the return already. It is not the pace

:24:19.:24:24.

that is beating her. It is almost having to create the pace.

:24:25.:24:29.

Oh, dear. She got that all wrong. Both these players, I think, just

:24:30.:24:39.

struggling to find a rhythm. Oh, that is just ludicrous! What

:24:40.:25:10.

fabulous touch from Ons Jabeur. So carefree, it is a joy to watch.

:25:11.:25:17.

Well, what a cheeky drop shot that was! I don't think that Lana saw

:25:18.:25:22.

that coming. Again, it was going backwards and she dropped in the

:25:23.:25:23.

short run again. That is the shot she has been

:25:24.:25:33.

looking for. The ground stroke down the line. Well, she's pretty

:25:34.:25:42.

difficult to read because she had thrown in all sorts of different

:25:43.:25:45.

patterns of play already in the first six games so she is certainly

:25:46.:25:48.

Svetlana plenty to think about and no rhythm.

:25:49.:26:12.

Lovely finish from Kuznetsova. Found her target. Carlos Martinez, there,

:26:13.:26:26.

Svetlana Kuznetsova's coach. You can see by that return of serve, that

:26:27.:26:29.

backhand slice, it just sat there rather invitingly. What she really

:26:30.:26:36.

wanted with that slice was the ball to really travel like a spear

:26:37.:26:39.

through the court but if you don't quite get hold of it, it just floats

:26:40.:26:42.

and sits there and gives Svetlana too much time on the ball. UMPIRE:

:26:43.:26:51.

Miss Jabeur challenging the call on the right-hand service line. The

:26:52.:26:52.

ball was called in. SLOW CLAPPING Oh, dear. Second serve. Worth a

:26:53.:27:02.

challenge! Way out! Good, solid service came from the

:27:03.:27:48.

number seven seed. -- service game. So Annabel, why has it been ten

:27:49.:27:54.

years since she has reached the quarterfinal here? I think with the

:27:55.:27:58.

game that Svetlana has, I think it is much more suited to hard courts

:27:59.:28:01.

and of course the clay courts. She comes out the back of the ball with

:28:02.:28:05.

a bit more spin on the forehand and even though she tries to look for

:28:06.:28:07.

the forehand and tries to be aggressive and we have seen already

:28:08.:28:10.

in this match, she can flatten it out on the backhand side, I think

:28:11.:28:14.

that, yeah, it just doesn't suit her. Her game is so much more

:28:15.:28:19.

effective on the other surfaces. I think she has a really great

:28:20.:28:23.

kick-serve but you know, the kick-serve on the grass court can

:28:24.:28:26.

sit up high and with the girls with the double handed backhand and the

:28:27.:28:30.

way the return of serve has become so key in the modern game, you know,

:28:31.:28:35.

players really like to step in and stamped on it, I think the

:28:36.:28:38.

kick-serve has not done as much damage on the grass as on other

:28:39.:28:43.

surfaces. Having said that, she has been such an effective doubles

:28:44.:28:48.

player in her career, winning many titles, 16 doubles titles and two

:28:49.:28:51.

Grand Slam doubles as well. She has a lot of hand skills. We know she

:28:52.:28:56.

can play at the net. You feel she should do better on the grass court.

:28:57.:29:01.

Ons Jabeur serving with new balls at 3-4.

:29:02.:29:11.

That was her best serve. She really had to target Kuznetsova there --

:29:12.:29:20.

target it, Kuznetsova, came at her at 71 mph, short and kicked up.

:29:21.:29:34.

Well, that would have felt good because she has missed a lot of

:29:35.:29:49.

backhand off the return of serve but here, she gets the footwork right,

:29:50.:29:53.

hips and shoulders round and then really launches into that, great

:29:54.:29:55.

weight transference through the ball.

:29:56.:30:01.

UMPIRE: Miss Kuznetsova is challenging the call on the right

:30:02.:30:05.

service line. The ball was called in. SLOW CLAPPING

:30:06.:30:24.

I think the line judge has only got one challenge left, hasn't she?

:30:25.:30:33.

UMPIRE: Correction, the ball was good. Miss Kuznetsova is challenging

:30:34.:30:36.

the call, the ball was called in. She got there in time, but didn't do

:30:37.:31:17.

enough with it. These groundstrokes have got real

:31:18.:31:41.

venom in them, and here's a chance for the number seven seed, Redpoint.

:31:42.:32:07.

That was strange. Kuznetsova thought the shot a copy before that looked

:32:08.:32:15.

well long, so in the end, she got what she wanted. I thought it was

:32:16.:32:19.

long myself, she almost indicated she was challenging but then changed

:32:20.:32:25.

her mind. I'm surprised the umpire did not stop play there. Ons Jabeur

:32:26.:32:29.

had a case to say, I was distracted. She's almost trying to trade with

:32:30.:33:19.

Kuznetsova. She's not winning the toe-to-toe battles from the

:33:20.:33:20.

baseline. It's not for the want of trying.

:33:21.:34:23.

It's the unforced errors of Ons Jabeur which are costing her dearly

:34:24.:34:28.

here, and Svetlana Kuznetsova has two set points.

:34:29.:34:40.

UMPIRE: Game and first set, Miss Kuznetsova.

:34:41.:34:49.

JAMES BURRIDGE: Never in doubt. After an opening 20 minutes or so

:34:50.:34:53.

where we thought this could go all the way to a tie-break, the last

:34:54.:34:57.

three or four games, Annabel, Ons Jabeur has really fallen off in

:34:58.:35:01.

terms of the percentages and unforced errors. Yes, she changed

:35:02.:35:09.

the pattern of play. At the start of the match, she was throwing in all

:35:10.:35:13.

sorts of different mixes of spin and pace and flattening it out as well,

:35:14.:35:18.

everything she was doing was unsettling the rhythm of Svetlana

:35:19.:35:22.

Kuznetsova. But it developed a different pattern towards the back

:35:23.:35:26.

end of the set, they started having more extended rallies from the back

:35:27.:35:31.

of the court, and Svetlana, way more impressive in that department. You

:35:32.:35:36.

can see the very high first serve percentage from Kuznetsova. Jabeur

:35:37.:35:42.

at 52%, will want to get that up. That stat on second serve points won

:35:43.:36:00.

is not a good one for Kuznetsova, she will want to get that up if she

:36:01.:36:09.

progresses. Beautiful view over Wimbledon part, the lake and golf

:36:10.:36:14.

course, absolutely stunning. This is one of my favourite quotes, number

:36:15.:36:20.

two court, it's got a great atmosphere, really beautiful bowl

:36:21.:36:26.

effect, nice place to come to watch tennis in the evening.

:36:27.:36:40.

Still a few people taking their seats.

:36:41.:37:12.

This is what happens in grass court tennis, it is more exaggerated, if

:37:13.:37:20.

you don't get behind the ball, with your body weight, it can be really

:37:21.:37:26.

tricky. You have to have very light extra steps and your feet. Those

:37:27.:37:32.

skills are very, very important on grass.

:37:33.:37:55.

And again, the look on her face says it see - huge frustration for Ons

:37:56.:38:06.

Jabeur. Yes. She looked very relaxed at the start of the match, but all

:38:07.:38:11.

of a sudden, the body language is shifting, she am starting to show

:38:12.:38:14.

her frustration, and Svetlana will be picking up on that.

:38:15.:38:41.

That's more like it. She got her body weight behind that shot.

:38:42.:38:52.

Svetlana will be disappointed she did not do more with that return of

:38:53.:38:57.

serve. It sat there, waiting to be attacked.

:38:58.:39:19.

Ons Jabeur need to settle. There is a danger of this match running away

:39:20.:39:26.

from her. So important to get that first game under your belt, out the

:39:27.:39:31.

message that you're not ready to roll over just yet. You're going to

:39:32.:39:35.

make your opponent work for every single point. Yes, she was just

:39:36.:39:40.

starting to look a little bit dejected. That should lift her

:39:41.:39:44.

spirits up it. Sometimes she doesn't just get

:39:45.:40:43.

balanced on that backhand, she pulls away from it.

:40:44.:41:00.

Kelly Thompson from Great Britain in the chair this evening.

:41:01.:41:58.

Nicely done. She had to watch that ball onto the strings like a hawk.

:41:59.:42:11.

So easy for those shots to go wrong. Well, she really took charge right

:42:12.:42:14.

from the word go in that last rally. Great return of serve, and seizing

:42:15.:42:22.

the opportunity to move forward and cut off the backhand volley angle

:42:23.:42:25.

there. Wow! That's a really nasty fall. Oh,

:42:26.:43:03.

dear! That didn't look good. Kelly Thompson straightaway off the chair.

:43:04.:43:11.

Fortunately, she can get back up, but this was a really nasty tumble.

:43:12.:43:28.

She may not know at the moment quite what she's done. That was nasty.

:43:29.:44:09.

She was running straight back to the area where she had just fallen. On

:44:10.:44:19.

stupor is not called for a trainer or a medical time-out.

:44:20.:44:35.

I'm amazed she hasn't called for the trainer, just even to get checked

:44:36.:44:44.

out, get you to do a few moves, just to see if anything might be damaged.

:44:45.:44:51.

It's more the fact, does she trust the ground beneath her, does she

:44:52.:44:57.

trust her footwork? That can mess with your mind.

:44:58.:45:16.

Indicating there that she was reaching for that ball.

:45:17.:45:26.

Chances for good Nat Sciver -- chances for Kuznetsova for an early

:45:27.:45:38.

break. Oh, that is just delicious! And the crowd loving it, too. It is

:45:39.:45:48.

like waving a wand, isn't it? Look at that, absolutely beautiful. You

:45:49.:45:55.

can almost see the ball holding on the strings. Follows it up with an

:45:56.:46:06.

ace down the T, her third in the match, at a critical time. Two break

:46:07.:46:26.

That says a lot about her self-belief. It was not the shot she

:46:27.:46:40.

intended. It's such a clever slice, it's not your routine slice, she's

:46:41.:46:44.

actually coming on the inside of the ball and fading it. So that when it

:46:45.:46:52.

bounces, it spins away from the opponent, makes it very awkward.

:46:53.:47:11.

About one WAS out, after an incredible backhand slice. She's got

:47:12.:47:28.

quite a box of tricks, hasn't she?! Bringing them all out tonight!

:47:29.:47:43.

Brilliant! Gutsy tennis from Ons Jabeur. Few would be trying this at

:47:44.:47:56.

break point down. Really accelerating through it, and she's

:47:57.:47:58.

got the crowd behind her. How many times do we see in the

:47:59.:48:29.

early stages of the second set, really crucial moments. A chance for

:48:30.:48:31.

2-1. We haven't seen too much of that.

:48:32.:48:55.

That was a bit of a rash error there.

:48:56.:49:23.

She knows she has to do more with that second serve. Kuznetsova is

:49:24.:49:31.

just waiting, ready to pounce. Fifth break point.

:49:32.:49:40.

This time, she gets it. And she knows how crucial it could be in the

:49:41.:49:55.

overall outcome of this match. SUE BARKER: What delightful tennis

:49:56.:49:59.

we are watching, and good that that nasty fall has not affected Haas too

:50:00.:50:06.

much. Just to update you on the Feliciano Lopez match, I'm afraid it

:50:07.:50:13.

is a rather sad end, because here at 3-3, you can see Mannarino has two

:50:14.:50:19.

break points, he breaks, and at this point, Feliciano Lopez up to the net

:50:20.:50:24.

and says, I can't carry on. He knows he can't come back and win it in

:50:25.:50:28.

five sets, that foot injury is just too much. Lopez, champion at

:50:29.:50:35.

Queen's, so much expected of him here, another one who has to retire

:50:36.:50:39.

because of an injury. In fact he's the seventh man in the main draw in

:50:40.:50:43.

this first round to retire because of injuries. And we have had two

:50:44.:50:52.

retirements on Centre Court today. So, very disappointing, so much

:50:53.:50:56.

expect it of Feliciano Lopez, but the 19th seed is out of the

:50:57.:51:03.

Championship said. So, only a couple of matches left on court. Everybody

:51:04.:51:07.

is really enjoying Court No. 2, and we're going to drop in there for the

:51:08.:51:10.

next couple of minutes before the highlights show. Clare Balding will

:51:11.:51:15.

have all the stories of the day. Back we go.

:51:16.:51:23.

JAMES BURRIDGE: Kuznetsova with the break in the second set. She's just

:51:24.:51:35.

beginning to find that finish, isn't she? Beautiful forehand down the

:51:36.:51:37.

line. ANNABEL CROFT: Just a great change

:51:38.:51:45.

of direction. On the front foot, starting to look much more

:51:46.:51:47.

comfortable. Just getting some momentum going.

:51:48.:52:10.

The coach of Kuznetsova will be happy with what he's seen so far.

:52:11.:52:21.

Still just holding that left hip. She must be feeling a bit sore.

:52:22.:52:47.

She's done amazingly just to continue and not have any fuss.

:52:48.:53:45.

Just a little too ambitious. Kuznetsova consolidates, she's 3-1

:53:46.:54:00.

to the good. Yes, you feel as if on stupor and needs to be aggressive,

:54:01.:54:03.

on the attack, trying to win the points, but the minute the rally

:54:04.:54:10.

extends, it's usually Kuznetsova who is coming out on top.

:54:11.:54:41.

Lovely. Much more like it. Looking to take the initiative, great depth.

:54:42.:55:02.

She's certainly got her fair share of support out here, she's really

:55:03.:55:11.

given them something to cheer about. Lovely return from Kuznetsova,

:55:12.:55:16.

really deep. No substitute for that on a grass court.

:55:17.:55:26.

A couple of cheap points now on this Jabeur serve, communion really

:55:27.:55:39.

handy. Just 51% of her first serves are going in right now.

:55:40.:56:05.

And it's putting her right into a hole here, unable to count on the

:56:06.:56:15.

serve, she's been broken once already in the second set. And now,

:56:16.:56:18.

another chance for Kuznetsova to strike.

:56:19.:56:33.

Sumptuous tennis! And that is why the crowd are really warming to this

:56:34.:56:47.

player, Ons Jabeur. What a beautiful volley this was.

:56:48.:57:15.

The crowd, trying to pick her spirits up.

:57:16.:57:24.

But was way too short from Ons Jabeur urge if and the number seven

:57:25.:57:29.

seed is cruising here. We haven't even reached the hour

:57:30.:57:47.

mark yet, and it is looking one-way traffic. It is now. It was neck and

:57:48.:57:52.

neck at the start of the match, we were seeing such beautiful creative

:57:53.:57:56.

flair from both of them at times. It's been really enjoyable to watch,

:57:57.:58:00.

but you feel Kuznetsova is much more comfortable now she knows what she

:58:01.:58:08.

got to do. When Haas is not getting that footwork right, she can't

:58:09.:58:14.

control the racquet face. So much about tennis, particularly on grass,

:58:15.:58:18.

is your movement. Kuznetsova in charge here.

:58:19.:58:25.

SUE BARKER: We now have to leave this live tennis here on BBC Two. If

:58:26.:58:33.

you want to continue watching this, you can do so on the red button.
