going absolutely insane. This is how he did it. Experience, composure and

:00:00.:00:00.

skill. Brilliant from Mario Matt. He is the Olympic slalom champion.

:00:00.:00:09.

CLARE BALDING: If you want to watch Final Score, it is available on the

:00:10.:00:16.

red button, we are staying with Winter Olympics and because very

:00:17.:00:19.

soon we will see our British curlers receive their medals but their

:00:20.:00:26.

chance to reflect on a slalom Olympic race the like of which we

:00:27.:00:29.

have never seen. That was some course. I think Kostelic who set the

:00:30.:00:39.

course perhaps had too many vodkas when he created it! It was a shame

:00:40.:00:44.

for many of the races, so many crashed. The right guys came out on

:00:45.:00:47.

top and it is great to see Mario Matt on top but it is such a shame

:00:48.:00:51.

to see slalom racing at its best like that. We get the confirmation

:00:52.:00:53.

of the standings. It was amazing how many good skiers

:00:54.:01:01.

did not finish. Mario Matt coming down last, and Marcel Hirscher who

:01:02.:01:07.

wins his first Olympic medal. Have been so frustrated and when he

:01:08.:01:09.

finished at other levels in the giant slalom, he said his best

:01:10.:01:14.

chance of a medal was gone and he was so upset, he finished fourth and

:01:15.:01:17.

fifth in Vancouver so this is a big metal moment for him and his

:01:18.:01:20.

compatriots who is the oldest ever gold medallist in the slalom takes

:01:21.:01:26.

the gold ahead of him. I know he was incredibly frustrated after his

:01:27.:01:30.

first run, coming in is the strongest and the favourite but

:01:31.:01:33.

actually the second run really suited his type of skiing because he

:01:34.:01:37.

senses beat so far out in the course was so tricky with big offset gates

:01:38.:01:42.

so it suited the way he skis. Dave Matt finished 15th so he did very

:01:43.:01:48.

well, a bad mistake -- they've Ryding. He made a big mistake, the

:01:49.:01:54.

almost stood still after that but then he was sensational and he can

:01:55.:01:59.

be proud about run. Big crowds in the medals plaza and they are

:02:00.:02:02.

gathering now for the medal ceremony for the men's curling. And Canada,

:02:03.:02:08.

for the first time, have done the gold medal doubles with the women

:02:09.:02:12.

skipped by Jennifer Jones and they won the men's as well but Great

:02:13.:02:16.

Britain will appear on the podium for both of these medal ceremonies.

:02:17.:02:19.

Lots of Canadian funds into cheer their boys, the buff boys as they

:02:20.:02:24.

are called. And Jennifer Jones and her side. But it is a wonderful

:02:25.:02:30.

site, Jackie Lockhart is with me, you have killed at three Olympic

:02:31.:02:35.

Games for Great Britain and this is the first time that in both men's

:02:36.:02:39.

and women's, British teams will come out to receive medals. , -- you have

:02:40.:02:47.

curled at three Olympic Games. Lots of preparation and it is great to

:02:48.:02:52.

see the medals coming through at the end. We have been successful at

:02:53.:02:56.

worlds and Europeans but to do it at the Olympics is marvellous. They are

:02:57.:03:00.

led out onto the stage and the presentation of the medals will be

:03:01.:03:06.

made by a man Steve Cram knows very well, a formally big sprint

:03:07.:03:10.

champion, I should never say former, and other big sprint

:03:11.:03:14.

champion in 1972 for the I have never met him, I know lots about

:03:15.:03:20.

him, one of the all-time greats, won the double in 1972 and you will not

:03:21.:03:27.

remember this, Clare Balding, but American sprinters were so good at

:03:28.:03:30.

the time, two of them missed their quarterfinals. I think they slept in

:03:31.:03:38.

and they could not do the 200 metres, I think they won the relay

:03:39.:03:44.

in the end and the soviet union hero, he is actually Ukrainian. I

:03:45.:03:49.

think you have something to do with the Ukrainian national Olympic

:03:50.:03:53.

committee as well. Here come the presentation party and you saw the

:03:54.:03:58.

British team coming out and waving and smiling and having been deflated

:03:59.:04:04.

and disappointed after losing their final heavily, now they can really

:04:05.:04:08.

celebrate the glories of winning a medal in this competition, David

:04:09.:04:11.

Murdoch in particular. And an achievement that he has been trying

:04:12.:04:13.

and striving after for many years. Craig Reedie up there as well, he

:04:14.:04:26.

has a new role with WADA which is very important. I know this will be

:04:27.:04:31.

a very proud moment for him. And of course, a Great Britain team and for

:04:32.:04:39.

Scotland in particular, Jackie, you have been talking about how much you

:04:40.:04:46.

have been getting reports back home and in Aberdeen, they are expecting

:04:47.:04:50.

300 people to turn up and have a go. I have had lots of communication

:04:51.:04:55.

back home and curling has exploded back home, it is so good to see.

:04:56.:05:00.

What platform this has been an good players out there have just

:05:01.:05:05.

highlighted and risen our sport much more than we ever anticipated. It is

:05:06.:05:14.

wonderful to see. It is a rather large medals presentation party than

:05:15.:05:20.

normally happens. But they will each carry out different medals to

:05:21.:05:25.

present and I am reliably informed that Valerie bought supple make the

:05:26.:05:27.

silver medal presentation. Meanwhile, the athletes are waiting

:05:28.:05:36.

behind their spec two podiums for their moment.

:05:37.:05:52.

You can see Tom Brewster and David Murdoch grinning away, the

:05:53.:06:00.

ultimate... Claire, this has been a great addition, the whole medals

:06:01.:06:06.

plaza idea. And the Olympics being separated, everybody in the

:06:07.:06:10.

mountains in the snow of events and then the ice events down here. It is

:06:11.:06:15.

a great thing to do to give them the chance to get the medal in front of

:06:16.:06:22.

big crowds. To have a special ceremony like this is fantastic for

:06:23.:06:27.

them. . Stepping forward to receive their medals, the bronze medal

:06:28.:06:31.

winning team of Sweden. They beat China in their bronze medal match,

:06:32.:06:36.

their skip Niklas Edin was so distraught after losing the

:06:37.:06:40.

semifinal to Great Britain. They can now enjoy a fine moment with his

:06:41.:06:45.

team. They have been in many ways the form curlers over the past

:06:46.:06:49.

couple of years in World Championships and World Cup

:06:50.:06:54.

competitions. Is, the announcer said Sebastien Coe, but it was Sebastian

:06:55.:07:00.

Kraupp. The Swedes, the world champions will have come here with

:07:01.:07:03.

high hopes and Canada were the favourites. But Jackie Lockhart

:07:04.:07:07.

would agree, so please do see them on the rostrum. It was a tough

:07:08.:07:10.

bronze medal match, probably one of their best throughout the tournament

:07:11.:07:14.

against China winning it in the extra end. A couple of mistakes from

:07:15.:07:18.

China but I think most people will be pleased to see Sweeting getting

:07:19.:07:23.

the rostrum. Yes, these guys have travelled all over the world and

:07:24.:07:26.

they have trained for a long time and current world champions and they

:07:27.:07:31.

were desperate to get the medal and they have to fight hard for it. And

:07:32.:07:37.

I think it is very well-deserved. They are really appreciated by all

:07:38.:07:41.

their friends out there and the other curling teams. Great rivalry

:07:42.:07:46.

but also great friendships out there. Just to confirm that the

:07:47.:07:50.

ultimate, even if they have not played in any matches, they do

:07:51.:07:55.

receive a medal, they are part of the team and help in the

:07:56.:08:00.

preparation. -- to confirm the alternate and that is what you see

:08:01.:08:01.

five men, not four. Silver medallists, representing

:08:02.:08:07.

Great Britain, And now, a male British curling team

:08:08.:08:26.

steps up to receive a medal at the Winter Olympics for the first time

:08:27.:08:31.

since 1924. And they've Medoc, 35 years old, from Lockerbie, alongside

:08:32.:08:38.

the youngsters, Greg Drummond, , Michael Goodfellow from Stirling and

:08:39.:08:43.

the alternate Tom Brewster from Aberdeen, this is their moment and

:08:44.:08:49.

Sir Craig Reedie handing the silver medals to them and putting them

:08:50.:08:51.

around their necks. And look at David Murdoch, he keeps looking at

:08:52.:08:57.

it, he cannot believe it's that after all this time, it has

:08:58.:09:02.

happened. He has had to Olympics before this. And there is Tom

:09:03.:09:10.

Brewster who helped get these three guys to where they got to. And for

:09:11.:09:17.

David Murdoch, you said earlier, the emotion he had in the interview

:09:18.:09:21.

afterwards, it is tough to come back and Jackie knows what it is like to

:09:22.:09:26.

come forth in the Olympics and it is four years, that is a long time to

:09:27.:09:29.

motivate yourself and make the commitment and to say he will give

:09:30.:09:32.

it another go so well done to him and all the guys. A lovely moment as

:09:33.:09:39.

Tom Brewster got his medal, David Murdoch led the pros and the whole

:09:40.:09:42.

team applauded him for the party has played. -- led the applause. And

:09:43.:09:47.

looking at Dave's face, particularly for him, if this can be topped, you

:09:48.:09:51.

wonder. We will wait for the decision that he will take. Whatever

:09:52.:10:00.

happens, this is just magnificent for him and the team. This is really

:10:01.:10:06.

a special moment for the guys, a special moment for everybody back

:10:07.:10:09.

home who has supported them and all the fans and I spoke today this

:10:10.:10:14.

morning and he couldn't actually... He wanted to see Lizzy Yarnold's

:10:15.:10:22.

medal. You will have one later on today, I said to them. It is

:10:23.:10:27.

wonderful. And now the team that beat Great Britain in that

:10:28.:10:31.

gold-medal match, they won 9-3 and the match was conceded after eight

:10:32.:10:36.

ends, they have been so strong throughout the tournament. Their

:10:37.:10:41.

skip Brad Jacobs, Ryan Harnden and the ultimate scale and lazy -- and

:10:42.:10:51.

known as the buff boys because they are in extreme physical shape and

:10:52.:10:55.

curling is massive on Canadian television, only ice hockey rates

:10:56.:10:59.

higher in so these guys are also liberty back in Canada and this for

:11:00.:11:03.

them, they will have felt they deserved it and probably because

:11:04.:11:11.

they may have expected it. Yes, they did. Their country did and it took

:11:12.:11:15.

them two or three matches to realise they were going to have to treat

:11:16.:11:20.

this as everybody else did, with the spec it deserves. The other pigs are

:11:21.:11:24.

different and they are undoubtedly perhaps the best team in the world

:11:25.:11:29.

-- the Olympics are different. They were good, they are not everybody's

:11:30.:11:33.

cup party in terms of their style, they are in your face, they have a

:11:34.:11:36.

level of intensity which hopes their game. It does not come across well

:11:37.:11:41.

to others necessarily but that is the way they play and that is the

:11:42.:11:45.

way they win. Talking to our guys last but, they said the Canadian

:11:46.:11:49.

team were much more subdued here than they have been in other

:11:50.:11:53.

tournaments and certainly if they were in front of a home crowd, they

:11:54.:11:56.

would have beat their chests a lot more. I think what Steve said there,

:11:57.:12:01.

the whole mannerism, they are very cocky but when they got here, they

:12:02.:12:06.

realised this competition is different from everything else. It

:12:07.:12:11.

is the Olympic Games and the pressure got to these guys and

:12:12.:12:15.

initially, I think it took them a few days before they started holding

:12:16.:12:19.

their shoulders back and acted like they normally do. They have won

:12:20.:12:24.

eight and won it impressively and we will now hear the national anthem of

:12:25.:12:25.

Canada, Oh, Canada. Britain, the curling teams. At the

:12:26.:12:44.

MUSIC: Canadian They will enjoy every single moment.

:12:45.:19:43.

It is something you can go back to. Did you think this would happen for

:19:44.:19:49.

them? I had hoped it would happen. That was the plan, give her the

:19:50.:19:54.

experience. She has grown so much, this whole team have grown. They

:19:55.:20:00.

have put in all the commitment and effort and look at this, they will

:20:01.:20:05.

be standing up on the podium, collecting a medal. That is the

:20:06.:20:19.

President of the International Paralympic committee. -- Committee.

:20:20.:20:38.

Again, they have a larger than usual presentation committee. Eve Muirhead

:20:39.:20:43.

coming in as skipper when she was only 19 at Vancouver, the experience

:20:44.:20:48.

of that, coming here as a 23-year-old, she has been through it

:20:49.:20:52.

and having the support she had from Anna Sloan and Vicki Adams, they are

:20:53.:21:02.

a very tight and good group of friends. Look how big the medals

:21:03.:21:23.

have got. For Valeri Borzov, back in 1972, I guess it was a surprise for

:21:24.:21:31.

many. He had a great year the year before, but it is great to see old

:21:32.:21:35.

champions being part of the ceremony. As they go through the

:21:36.:21:54.

translations, onto the Russian version, Great Britain will be the

:21:55.:22:00.

first to receive their medals. They are wearing those fine hearts and

:22:01.:22:13.

they were so delighted -- hats. They were able to celebrate because they

:22:14.:22:22.

won their march -- match. Representing Great Britain, what a

:22:23.:22:39.

proud moment for Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Claire Hamilton

:22:40.:22:47.

and Lauren Gray. You must be so proud. This is fantastic, I am sure

:22:48.:22:54.

there will be tears back home. You saw the smile on their faces, they

:22:55.:23:01.

are so delighted. Very difficult to come here as world champions, people

:23:02.:23:07.

raise their game, they fought hard to get that bronze medal. I am sure

:23:08.:23:13.

they will not be able to believe it. The medals are getting bigger and

:23:14.:23:24.

heavier. I am so impressed. It is lovely that he is making this

:23:25.:23:32.

presentation. He has been a very influential figure in Great Britain

:23:33.:23:40.

and now all around the world. This will not be the last time we see

:23:41.:23:44.

these girls on a podium. They have many more medals to collect. They

:23:45.:23:55.

were beaten by Canada, who have won the gold medal. The way the

:23:56.:24:02.

competition works, they ended up in the bronze medal match because they

:24:03.:24:07.

drew Canada in the semifinal. If Canada where the best team, I think

:24:08.:24:16.

we were second best. The girls would I accept that Canada deserved the

:24:17.:24:20.

gold medal. We will see them in a second. They can be so proud of

:24:21.:24:25.

their achievement. They will be back. Four years may seem like a

:24:26.:24:33.

long time, but it is amazing how quickly it will come around.

:24:34.:24:43.

Stepping forward, the side that has taken the silver medal. Sweden. It

:24:44.:24:51.

was gold in the last two Olympic Games for the Swedish curling team.

:24:52.:25:03.

They have a new skip. Margaretha Sigfridsson led her team to an

:25:04.:25:07.

exceptional silver medal. They did not always play at their best. They

:25:08.:25:11.

managed to dig out a victory when they needed it most. Even in that

:25:12.:25:18.

final, they played well, even until the last couple of Games. Maria

:25:19.:25:28.

Prytz played a shot which gave two away. It was down to the ninth end

:25:29.:25:38.

when they lost the two. Other than that, they were very quiet and

:25:39.:25:44.

confident and played well. Without question, you would have had to have

:25:45.:25:59.

taken this away from Canada. Jennifer Jones was not the skip in

:26:00.:26:07.

Vancouver. They did not win the gold medal in Vancouver. There are so

:26:08.:26:16.

many good teams that could represent Canada. For Jennifer Jones, it has

:26:17.:26:25.

been the culmination of a long campaign. Sweden are no longer the

:26:26.:26:31.

Olympic champions. That title belongs to Canada and for Jennifer

:26:32.:26:36.

Jones, she did get through the trials in 2005, but not in 2009. She

:26:37.:26:43.

has had to wait a long time for this. She is 39 years old and

:26:44.:26:51.

recently became a mother. Her partner is here. This is their

:26:52.:27:01.

moment, they can jump for joy. Canada has been unbeaten and take

:27:02.:27:06.

the gold medal. Jennifer Jones there. They have worked together so

:27:07.:27:14.

well. They have played very well all season to get here they played well

:27:15.:27:23.

in the Olympic trials. Jennifer Jones has a tear in her eye. Jill

:27:24.:27:38.

Officer there. Those two, when they were teenagers, Jennifer Jones asked

:27:39.:27:44.

Jill Officer to play in her team. She said even then, Jennifer Jones

:27:45.:27:48.

was her hero, even when she was a teenager. Dawn McEwen, she was a

:27:49.:27:56.

brilliant lead for them. You grow up as caves, you dream of winning an

:27:57.:28:02.

Olympic gold medal and it comes to fruition -- children. And Great

:28:03.:28:13.

Britain should be proud to be on the podium and standing next to a side

:28:14.:28:18.

this good and, who knows, maybe one day Eve Muirhead and her team will

:28:19.:28:23.

be good enough to be in the central position. Jackie believes they could

:28:24.:28:28.

be back here with another big medal in four-year 's' time. For the

:28:29.:28:32.

second time, we will hear the Canadian national anthem.

:28:33.:29:48.

CHEERING. And you can hear the cheering from here. Congratulations

:29:49.:29:59.

to Canada. Final score follows immediately and we will be back at

:30:00.:30:04.

six o'clock with more live action from the Winter Olympics. We will be

:30:05.:30:09.

catching up with the four-man bob. Jackson and his crew have been going

:30:10.:30:14.

well in training. We will see if they can put that into practice now

:30:15.:30:19.

that it matters. This is a photograph that the British girls

:30:20.:30:25.

will treasure and a medal that they genuinely, genuinely deserve. Jackie

:30:26.:30:29.

Lockhart is smiling like a proud mother watching this. You look so

:30:30.:30:36.

delighted. I feel like the old mother hen. I used to curl with some

:30:37.:30:41.

of these girls and it is nice to see them doing so well, really

:30:42.:30:46.

wonderful. British fans have travelled here and the men and women

:30:47.:30:50.

have family members and friends and it is lovely they can share it. And

:30:51.:30:57.

when they go back to Stirling to train they will get more attention

:30:58.:31:19.

and congratulations. We go off the air with huge congratulations. Final

:31:20.:31:21.

score is coming up after this.

:31:22.:31:23.
