Japan Ninjas The Travel Show

This week I am finding out what it takes to be a real-life ninja in

Japan. I don't think ninjas are meant to giggle. Joe is trying to

catch up with a man walking every street in New York. And Tommy has a

suitcase that charges his phone and tell them when it is overweight. It

is a bit like travelling with my wife, except without the arguments.

Ssh! The ninja. A mysterious undercover

agent in feudal Japan. Skilled in espionage and assassination, living

in the shadows, and now you can apply to be won. Far from hiding in

the dark, the next generation of ninjas answered a job ad.

Full-time, central Japan, salary around 1600 US dollars a month.

Hundreds of people applied and auditioned for the jobs, including

many from overseas. The lucky winners are based here. It is part

of a mighty tourism push before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to bring in

more tourists to the region, and in particular the city, which visitors

often pass by. TRANSLATION: The aim of this is to bring in as many

foreign tourists as we can. We have brought in ninjas because they have

a historical connection to the area. They will perform and they will mix

with the tourist. This is the local castle, and these are some of the

chosen few, the new ninjas. And yes, one of them is in Japanese. He is

from America. I think it is every foreign kid's dream at one point,

every kid, every kid dreams about becoming a ninja at some point in

their life. For me I just held on to that dream a little longer than most

people. And I know you have just started, but what is it like to be

the only foreign ninja? It's a challenge, it's a challenge. I

thought I could come to Japan, find a ninja clan, and that would be it.

But it is a constant progression of learning of studying, and struggling

with Japanese. But I have never been happier, so... We have been allowed

in to watch the ninjas train. It is not just physical. There is also a

history to be learnt. It will be an intensive month, ahead of this

modern date ninja team's debut. It is only a training session, but

there is already a lot of media interest. And for me it feels like

there is a reality TV show or talent show element to this process. But

not everyone is buying into the hype. Some purists are worried that

this sort of campaign is sending a distorted image of the Japanese icon

to the rest of the world. TRANSLATION: The main thing about

ninjas is the mental side, how to lead, and so on. In the

entertainment industry, the physical side is exaggerated, and some people

think it is cool. But you have to earn it. I would rather other people

see what real ninjas do, and then decide for themselves if it is worth

it. That is my wish. Back in Nagoya, the region's seven newest ninjas are

training at the castle, and they are already drawing in the crowds. Have

a wonderful time in Japan. But how close is this to the revered life of

the ninja of old? Two hours from Nagoya, I have been told this is the

heart of ninja country. So hundreds of years ago, real-life ninjas

trained in these mountains here, so I have come to this ninja training

camp to try and get an authentic ninja experience. Ninja forest has

been set up to cater to tourists in a natural setting. I might look the

part, but can I cut it as a real-life ninja? To my relief, we

started the day with some prayers and meditation. Then it was time to

leave the safe surrounds of the temple, and head to the training

Corps. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous, I don't want to fall flat

on my face and embarrass myself. Time to say hello to the assistant

chief ninja here. First I learn the art of the shuriken, or ninja star.

TRANSLATION: Shuriken was a weapon that was only used as a last resort.

They would put poison on the tips here to kill the enemy. It can kill

you? So how do we hold it? Right? And right there. So you quench your

thirst, and then just between the thumb. All right, here goes. This is

actually more difficult than it looks. Then it was on to the wire.

What would this be used for? If there was a castle, and the Moat. So

the rope would help you get over the water? Yes. All ninja like here.

OK, I don't think ninjas are meant to giggle. OK. And then, the skill

of scaling walls undetected. You don't expect me to do that, do you?

It's almost as tall as me. I wouldn't say it was easy, and they

definitely didn't say it was pretty, but I managed it so they upped the

NT. -- ante. OK, so this wall is definitely taller than me. Should I

run? I don't think I can do it again!

Time to let go of any dreams I have of becoming a true ninja.

come across, because the makers claim that this one Kenway is self,

it has smartphone access, and will even send you a text message when it

arrives in baggage reclaim. Sounds impressive. We have seen quite a few

smart suitcases launched over the past year, and this has now added

itself to that list. It is loaded with hi-tech features, including a

smart handle which can link to your phone and music. There is a built-in

charging dock, a digital weighing scale, tracking system and an SOS

alarm. This is a gadget lovers case. There is so much going on inside,

and as you can imagine, with all that technology, it can be a little

bit on the heavy side. But it is practical, it has been really well

thought out, with you, the traveller in mind. This is the kind of case

that communicates to. It even tells you when it is a little bit the

heavy side. It is a bit like travelling with my wife, except

without the argument. Competition is really fierce in home

security but manufacturers are trying to find unique ways of making

their product stand out. This one not only tells you what is going on

at home that you can teach it to know who you'll friends and families

are. Added peace of mind when you are away thanks to facial

recognition technology. It lets you and anyone passes in front of the

camera but it also claims to know if the familiar face has entered your

home or stranger. It needs strong Wi-Fi connection and some people may

not like the idea of you knowing when someone at home is having

stranger over. Although, I cannot imagine why! It does not look like

piece of home surveillance kit and the way it can integrate into your

life is changing all the time. You can use it in different ways. There

are lots to choose from. My advice is this, work out what it is you

need and before you part with your money do your homework. Nothing

beats and good look when you are travelling but carrying around at

tablet is that it'll be on the quayside. That was the case until

this came along. This is an new neat little e-reader. They say it is the

biggest jump forward. Smaller, economically friendly and out bigger

battery life and the display is brighter. There is much more to

this. 60% more LED is, 20% lighter. You can fill the difference. But

more comes at price. This is significantly dearer than the

existing model. He needs aid BBC cameraman! 360 degrees of filming. I

bet your camera cannot do that, hey! All of this without even moving

my feet. It also captures stills and produces CD hand-held videos, giving

it our professional touch. They claim it is eight step up from your

regular cameras and gives it to be sold footage without the big budget.

It is really well-designed and super easy to use. It will however take

little bit longer to master it. The battery power is problem but think

of the views you can capture. I can say this move -- save this move for

the dancefloor. New York is home to some of the most

iconic and photographed tourist attractions in the world. And those

that visit will often have checklist of what they want to see and snap.

But what if you want to get under the skin of this enormous city? We

meet someone who has taken sightseeing to whole new level. Am

I do not want to cut corners. You really are walking every metre of

this place, are you not! Well, if I cut the corner, you know, I am not

walking the block, you know. When I finish block, I go home, walking

from the subway to my home, I still have it in my head that they have to

interesting view of our people deal with grief and how it changes over

time. How people physically expressed their grief and the kind

of emotions people have. I would have thought that initially, you

would see more anger but a lot of it is about healing. So that is just

the little window about aspects of New York. We finish the walk in the

heart of Chinatown. We are in downtime flushing. Crowded with

people. You can see where the red lines are not is where I have to

still walk. He thinks it will take him another year to achieve his goal

by which time he thinks he would have covered more than 8000 miles.

It is certainly not the speedy way to sightseeing but I cannot imagine

that anyone knows the city is. Wonderful but exhausting way to see
