Now on BBC News it's time for the Travel Show. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
Coming up on this week's Travel Show: We're in Colombia, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
exploring the legacy of one of the country's | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
most controversial criminals. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
We're here at Pablo's prison slash five star resort! | 0:00:14 | 0:00:19
Ooops! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Did I just make that man crash? | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
I hit the road in Tokyo, taking tourists for a ride. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
They look a bit shell-shocked! | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
And Global Gadgets gives you the lowdown on how to take | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
a selfie from up in the sky! | 0:00:31 | 0:00:37
Hello and welcome to the Travel Show, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
coming to you this week from Tokyo in Japan, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
with me Carmen Roberts. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
A little later on in the show, I'll be trying my hand at pulling | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
one of the iconic rickshaws that weaves its way | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
through the streets here. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
But first... | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
We're in Medellin, in the north west of Colombia. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
Two decades ago it was one of the most dangerous cities | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
in the world, as the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar waged war | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
against the government. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
Now, the city has been transformed, but for many tourists who come here, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
the fascination with Escobar endures. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
We travelled to his hometown to find out how tours about his life | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
are dividing public opinion there. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:53
People are still scared, and still are scared to come | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
to Colombia, especially Medellin. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:07
For a long time it was the most violent city in the world. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
We're here at La Catedral, Pablo's prison slash | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
five star resort! | 0:02:43 | 0:02:49
La Catedral was a jail that Escobar built for himself and which was part | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
of the agreement with the government that he would turn himself in, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
but he would come to his jail. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:15
In here, they've still got some of the remains of what used | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
to be his bed. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
The frame... | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
Pretty big bed! | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
If you look in here, there's a plaque on the wall | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
with little white crosses. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
That's a memorial to, I think, the amount of people they think | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
were killed here when Pablo was here. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
Right here, he kept people that you saw on the little white crosses, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
and they say what he would do... | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
He would clap his hands and say 'you know where you're | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
going, let's go'. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:56
He'll take them back here by the backside of the property | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
and push them off a cliff. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
So this is the view he would see over his domain. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
At that time, Pablo ran Medellin. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
Medellin was his. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
This tour has become very controversial, even with the mayor | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
here of Medellin. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
I can understand that, because they lived through | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
some terrible times. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
Some people are trying to glorify this guy, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
and they actually have a name for it. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
They call it narco tourism. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
In the beginning I didn't want to come on the tour | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
because I was like, should I go on the tour? | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
It'd be giving money to something that created such devastation | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
in the past. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
More tourists know about it, more around the world, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
so the more real it is. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:15
I think that the kids of Colombia also need to learn about him, | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
so I think it could actually be a school tour as well, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
Now we are headed to Barrio Pablo Escobar, | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
and that's the actual name of the neighbourhood! | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
He built 300 plus houses for these people, that were living | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
in the city dump. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
He went and got them out of the dump, gave each one of these | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
families their own house. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
As you can imagine, people here love him. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:53
You might not make it out of here if you come up here to talk | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
bad about Escobar! | 0:06:57 | 0:06:58
Alright, here, we are at Pablo's grave. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
This is the man right here, his final resting place. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:55
I've had one group come, and wanted to sniff cocaine | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
off the tombstone! | 0:07:58 | 0:07:59
I was like, man, do what you want. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
It's up to you, if that's what you want to do. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
I don't tell them what they can or can't do. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
It ain't my cemetery. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
As you can see, people here taking selfies... | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
You can sit here all afternoon and you just see people coming | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
and going, coming and going, to come and see the grave. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
It's part of the history here, I don't think we should forget | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
what happened in that era and how that came about. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
Time now for our Global Gourmet. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
This week we're in the Parisian market districts, for a masterclass | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
in how to create one of France's favourite pastries. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:48
I am the founder here. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:58
I am the founder here. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
I started when I was 19 years old, so it was in 2012. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:06
My idea was to have a new challenge and to create something new. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:14
I love the pastry of the eclair, and I said no stores in Paris | 0:09:14 | 0:09:19
sell good eclairs. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
This special machine... | 0:09:26 | 0:09:29
You can do very beautiful eclairs. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:31
You can do it by hand. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
We do like 500 a day. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
To have the same eclairs, we need a machine like this. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
You will see how it works. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
Very, very beautiful eclairs with this machine. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:47
Here, we are in what they call the second district, | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
it's really in the centre of Paris. | 0:09:54 | 0:10:02
The eclair was invented in France by Antonin Careme | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
like 200 years ago. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
In France, the eclair is the most popular pastry. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:19
For several years it has been elected the most favourite pastry. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
And when you are young, it is the pastry every child knows | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
and wants to eat because you have chocolate! | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
To have the best quality, everything is made here, every morning. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:39
We have only one store in Paris, so we can control everything. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:44
We have always chocolates, salted butter caramel and vanilla, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
the most popular, but after we have original flavours like mont | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
blanc, chestnut cream. | 0:10:55 | 0:11:03
There's one that works a lot, raspberry blackcurrant. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
We created more than 100 flavours. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:14
There are a lot of stages in creating an eclair: | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
the shoe pastry, the cream and after the decoration. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
But if the shoe pastry is not good, you will not have a good eclair. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
We have several sizes of eclairs. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
Small eclairs, regular eclairs and giant eclairs. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
It's an eclair for eight persons, for Christmas or birthdays! | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
Still to come here on the Travel Show... | 0:11:46 | 0:11:49
Hello BBC Travel! | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
We meet the team who are travelling the world by rickshaw. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:57
So don't go away! | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
The Travel Show, your essential guide wherever you're heading! | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
This is Tower Bridge, one of London's tourism crown | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
jewels, but if you watch the people who've come to see it, | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
they've got one thing on their minds. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:29
This week, it's all about selfies. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:30
We're taking a look at some of the tech that might help | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
you take better snaps! | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
First... | 0:12:38 | 0:12:38
A way to get a bit more distance between you and the camera. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
Sometimes you need a wider perspective. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
The AirSelfie is an ultra-light, flying camera with built in Wi-Fi, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
which connects to an app on your phone. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
It also gets its power from this case, that you get in the box. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
At 61 grams, it's pretty lightweight, so in theory that makes | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
it easy to fly but on a day like this... | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
The wind keeps getting it! | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
That means I keep having to chase it! | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
The Air Selfie, it's a cool contraption and a nice idea, | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
but unless you're flying it in completely non-windy surroundings | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
you can pretty much forget it. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
And what you've got to remember as well, it's still classified | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
as a drone, which means in some parts of the world it's illegal | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
to fly it in built up areas. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:21
The most popular way to get yourself into the frame properly | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
is by investing in one of these... | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
It's called a selfie stick. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:27
So how much should I spend on a new stick and what features | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
should I be looking out for? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:32
Well, my new friend leads smartphone photography tours... | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
Pretend you're not looking... | 0:13:35 | 0:13:36
So if anyone will know, she will. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
If you're thinking of taking them on your trips, it's very important | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
you take something you're comfortable with. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
For example, this anchor, it's compact, it will fit | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
in your pocket, your bag or carry-on luggage. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
It's not heavy. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
Have a feel. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:56
Wow. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:56 | |
Nice and light. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:57
And also, the clamp. | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
We have this from a corner shop. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
Very wobbly. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:01
I can see it's wobbly. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
New phones coming out right now, worth ?600, | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
?700, so I wouldn't go cheap on the selfie stick if it risks... | 0:14:05 | 0:14:09
Yeah, the material feels cheap. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
If you're into more serious outdoor situations - | 0:14:14 | 0:14:19
sport, adventures, you may want to try this Polar Pro. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
Wow, a beast! | 0:14:23 | 0:14:24
The great thing about it is that you can recharge your phone | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
and your GoPro here. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:32
Headphones as well, with USB ports. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:33
This is waterproof? | 0:14:33 | 0:14:34
Waterproof. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
Go underwater, do water sports, go fishing. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
Wow. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:40 | |
Whatever you want. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:41
How much does something like this cost? | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
?80 to ?100. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:44
Wow, that's a lot of money for a selfie stick! | 0:14:44 | 0:14:49
Yeah, because it's more than a stick! | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
You can be powering your phone for 12 hours of battery. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
If you're definitely sure you're going to be using this a lot, | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
then go for it, but if you're starting and you just | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
want to experiment, go with the safe option. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:08
But if you want something a little extra for your selfies, | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
this is our final tip. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:12
This is the Giroptic Io, a pocket friendly camera that shoots | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
360 degree photos and steals live streams to YouTube and Facebook. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
It's really easy to use. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:19
That's mainly because there's no set up process. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
Simply take the device, plug it into the bottom | 0:15:21 | 0:15:28
of the iPhone, it fires up the dedicated app. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
The minute you fire up the app, you have options to take photos, | 0:15:30 | 0:15:34
shoot video, stream. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:35
Simple stuff. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:35
I can easily pan around the surroundings. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
There's the cameraman! | 0:15:37 | 0:15:38
Wave, say hi! | 0:15:38 | 0:15:39
Hi! | 0:15:39 | 0:15:39 | |
The ice cream van! | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
Compared to other devices on the market, bigger, | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
clunkier, this probably feels a godsend although the fact it plays | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
nice with Apple only... | 0:15:47 | 0:15:53
That isn't going to be to everyone's favour. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
The quality, as far as I can see, is pretty good. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
But for the price you've really got to ask yourself is this something | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
you're really going to use? | 0:16:03 | 0:16:04
Now, come to Tokyo and you're surrounded by so many iconic | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
sights and sounds. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:08
But maybe none is more Japanese than the hand pulled rickshaw! | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
In other cities around the world, tourist rickshaws are sometimes seen | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
as an unregulated menace. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
But here in Asakusa, in Tokyo, the hand pulled carts are a much | 0:16:19 | 0:16:24
loved symbol of the city. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
They're so iconic, in fact, there's a boyband dedicated | 0:16:28 | 0:16:37
to the rickshaw! | 0:16:37 | 0:16:41
Plus, there's another group of drivers who have become social | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
media stars as they document their rickshaw journey | 0:16:44 | 0:16:48
around the world. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:49
At the moment they're in Cambodia. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:50
Hello BBC Travel! | 0:16:50 | 0:16:55
Their aim is to introduce people to Japanese culture before | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
See you guys soon! | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
You can follow the team's epic journey on social media - | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
but if you want to try a hand pulled rickshaw for yourself, | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
Hi! | 0:17:12 | 0:17:12 | |
I went to the Hong Kong marathon, Vancouver marathon, many races, | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
and one day I saw the rickshaw in Asakusa and oh, I thought this | 0:17:15 | 0:17:17
See you guys soon! | 0:17:36 | 0:17:37
You can follow the team's epic journey on social media - | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
but if you want to try a hand pulled rickshaw for yourself, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
there's no better place than Asakusa in Tokyo. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
Hi! | 0:17:46 | 0:17:47 | |
Hi! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51 | |
I've come down to meet one of the city's few | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
female rickshaw drivers. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:59
So how did you get into this career? | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
I liked the marathon! | 0:18:01 | 0:18:02
I went to the Hong Kong marathon, Vancouver marathon, many races, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:09
and one day I saw the rickshaw in Asakusa and oh, I thought this | 0:18:09 | 0:18:14
is my job! | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
It felt like destiny! | 0:18:17 | 0:18:18
Wow, OK! | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
Yeah! | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23 | |
The rickshaw, or jinrikisha as they're called here, | 0:18:23 | 0:18:25
was invented in Tokyo in the 19th century. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:31
Her boss told me how things have changed since then. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
The rickshaw used to be like a taxi a long time ago but now it's | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
more for entertainment. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:39
A good rickshaw driver needs to quickly feel what the customer | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
wants to do. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:49
Some people want to be entertained, some want to see the scenery, | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
some want to listen to the guide. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
It depends on the customer. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:55
OK, first we have to look the part. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
You've got me a uniform? | 0:18:58 | 0:19:06
Yeah! | 0:19:06 | 0:19:07 | |
And then here's a belt. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
Very long one! | 0:19:09 | 0:19:10
Turn! | 0:19:10 | 0:19:10 | |
One more I think! | 0:19:10 | 0:19:11
And make it tight. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:12
Ta-da! | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
And to complete the look I'm wearing those traditional split toe shoes. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:22
It's more comfortable than running shoes! | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
Is it!? | 0:19:24 | 0:19:24
Yeah! | 0:19:24 | 0:19:25 | |
There we go. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:26
You got it! | 0:19:26 | 0:19:32
I might look the part, but I soon realise there's more | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
to the job than just manoeuvring the rickshaw. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
Many cars are crossing very close to me. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:45
It's kind of scary. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:46
This is the main street of Asakusa. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
We have to talk during running, but at the same time | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
I'm like... | 0:19:51 | 0:19:52
SHE PANTS. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:52
It's harder than a marathon! | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
I'm beginning to think I should have trained for this. | 0:19:54 | 0:20:01
How heavy is this? | 0:20:01 | 0:20:02
100kg! | 0:20:02 | 0:20:02
What! | 0:20:02 | 0:20:03 | |
Wow, that's heavy! | 0:20:03 | 0:20:04
OK, you sit like this, hold maybe here, then stand up very | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
slowly like this... | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
OK. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13 | |
Because if you do it quick, the customer gets very scared. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:27
Oh, I see. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:28
Yeah. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:29 | |
And the most important thing is to keep balance. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
OK. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34 | |
Now it's my turn. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:35
Yes! | 0:20:35 | 0:20:54 | |
Now, I'll be slow, try not to scare you... | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
That's good? | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
A nice, easy pace. | 0:20:58 | 0:20:59
Trying not to scare my passengers. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
OK... | 0:21:01 | 0:21:01 | |
Ooops! | 0:21:01 | 0:21:01
Did I just make that man crash? | 0:21:01 | 0:21:07
Yes. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:08 | |
Was it my fault? | 0:21:08 | 0:21:12
Lesson over, it's time for my first customers. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
OK, so they're two small children... | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
But it still counts! | 0:21:18 | 0:21:19
They look a bit scared! | 0:21:19 | 0:21:20
Slowly... | 0:21:20 | 0:21:30
These two are heavier than you! | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
Here we go! | 0:21:32 | 0:21:37
Once you get going you get a bit of momentum. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
They look a bit shell-shocked! | 0:21:40 | 0:21:47
High five! | 0:21:47 | 0:21:48
I think it's safe to say it's best I leave that to the professionals, | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
but if you're in Tokyo and want to give a proper rickshaw | 0:21:51 | 0:21:58
tour a go, you'll find the drivers near the Kaminarimon Gate, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:01
near the exit of the Asakusa metro station. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
Ride time is agreed in advance, and the cheapest option is a ten | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
minute jog around the neighbourhood for roughly 3,000 Yen - | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
that's roughly about ?35. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:18
Well, that's all we've got time for on this week's show. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
Coming up next week: We're in Jaffa, in Israel, to meet the actors | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
who perform as part of the world's first ever | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
deaf-blind theatre company. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:29
So do look out for that, and in the meantime sign up | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
