Of all the tourists that came to Britain last year,

0:00:020:00:04

97% of them didn't visit Yorkshire.

0:00:040:00:06

What's wrong with them?

0:00:080:00:10

Coming up this week -

0:00:310:00:32

we find out how this region's trying to fight London's dominance

0:00:320:00:36

and why the Tour de France

0:00:360:00:37

could be the greatest weapon in its armoury.

0:00:370:00:40

We've got everything, really.

0:00:400:00:41

All we need is somebody to come and appreciate it.

0:00:410:00:45

Tommy's back with his travel gadgets.

0:00:450:00:47

We harness his destructive side.

0:00:470:00:50

But if you around whacking it against walls,

0:00:500:00:52

you could end up breaking it. I didn't that time!

0:00:520:00:55

Our animated travel tales come from Romania,

0:00:550:00:58

with an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.

0:00:580:01:02

And we go clubbing with the retro ravers of Spain's Balearic Islands.

0:01:020:01:07

Some of the UK's most beautiful landscape is in Yorkshire.

0:01:150:01:20

And one of the best ways to arrive is by rail.

0:01:200:01:25

Steam trains still sometimes run on these old lines.

0:01:250:01:29

And it's dead easy to get to for foreign tourists,

0:01:290:01:33

just a few hours out of London.

0:01:330:01:35

Tickets, please.

0:01:380:01:40

Thank you very much.

0:01:410:01:43

We're very lucky today, actually. It's an absolutely fantastic day.

0:01:450:01:49

When you say "lucky today", isn't it like this every day?

0:01:490:01:52

It's not...not like this every day.

0:01:520:01:54

But if you choose to come on the Settle to Carlisle line,

0:01:540:01:57

and it is quite misty, that's the atmosphere.

0:01:570:01:59

Why is it only 3% of international visitors to the UK

0:02:010:02:04

bother coming here?

0:02:040:02:06

For most British people,

0:02:060:02:08

this area is known as being wild and beautiful

0:02:080:02:11

and for two famous and huge national parks.

0:02:110:02:14

But that message isn't getting around.

0:02:140:02:17

That's why Yorkshire is pinning its hopes on another form of travel,

0:02:170:02:20

one with fewer wheels.

0:02:200:02:22

Bikes.

0:02:260:02:27

Next weekend, the Grand Depart of the Tour de France

0:02:270:02:31

will leave Yorkshire's biggest city, Leeds,

0:02:310:02:34

bound for its smaller, more peaceful neighbour Harrogate.

0:02:340:02:38

On its way, the peloton will pass through

0:02:380:02:40

some extraordinary countryside.

0:02:400:02:43

Organisers reckon around 3.5 billion people around the world

0:02:430:02:48

will be watching the race - a gold-plated opportunity.

0:02:480:02:52

There'll be people around Europe and the world

0:02:520:02:54

who will maybe have heard of Yorkshire

0:02:540:02:56

but not know what Yorkshire is.

0:02:560:02:58

So when they get to see a ten-hour television advert

0:02:580:03:01

of the great county of Yorkshire,

0:03:010:03:03

I think they'll have their eyes opened

0:03:030:03:04

to see how beautiful the county is.

0:03:040:03:06

Do you think part of the problem,

0:03:060:03:08

and the reason why you don't get as many international tourists

0:03:080:03:10

coming to Yorkshire, is because of the cost?

0:03:100:03:12

It's quite expensive to get here on the train.

0:03:120:03:15

If you book it on the day, you are going to pay the highest price,

0:03:150:03:19

get the most expensive ticket.

0:03:190:03:21

We need to make it possible through ticketing with Eurostar

0:03:210:03:25

and then a train coming straight through to Yorkshire.

0:03:250:03:28

At the moment, you've got to print a ticket off in London.

0:03:280:03:30

There are things like that - we need to make it a lot easier.

0:03:300:03:33

There are things the government can help with from that point of view.

0:03:330:03:36

Standard prices can start at £13, if you're lucky.

0:03:390:03:44

But walk-up fares can cost a couple of hundred.

0:03:460:03:49

It's almost impossible to fly direct from outside Europe,

0:03:490:03:53

so many potential visitors pass through London first.

0:03:530:03:57

In most cases, that's where they stay.

0:03:570:03:59

That means some of the most popular parts of England

0:04:000:04:04

struggle to attract foreign arrivals,

0:04:040:04:06

with figures only about 2% of the total.

0:04:060:04:10

Sucking in visitors from miles around,

0:04:100:04:13

many fear London's becoming something of a tourism black hole.

0:04:130:04:19

One finger.

0:04:190:04:21

And then the second finger on...now!

0:04:210:04:23

-That's it!

-THEY SING IN CHORUS

0:04:230:04:25

'The Tour Of Infinite Possibility, in a back room in Otley.

0:04:250:04:30

'The guys leading this workshop, Hope And Social,

0:04:300:04:33

'are the front men of Yorkshire's cultural festivities.

0:04:330:04:37

'They're from around the UK, but have found a home here,

0:04:370:04:40

'and are quickly becoming a common sight

0:04:400:04:43

'in the region's pubs and clubs.'

0:04:430:04:46

How am I going to move my fingers there? You're having a laugh!

0:04:460:04:49

'The Yorkshire Festival has used music, dance, drama

0:04:530:04:56

'and sculpture as a sideshow to the Tour,

0:04:560:04:59

'and there are events and exhibitions planned

0:04:590:05:01

'throughout the summer.'

0:05:010:05:03

I must say, it all sounds fantastic.

0:05:030:05:06

Do you think there is, if someone came on holiday to Yorkshire,

0:05:060:05:10

there's enough culture, enough things to do,

0:05:100:05:12

to sustain a holiday?

0:05:120:05:14

-How long for, two months?

-Oh.

-Definitely, yeah!

0:05:140:05:18

I was saying recently, cos I've got two kids, there isn't a day where

0:05:180:05:24

you couldn't do something different, if you wanted to.

0:05:240:05:26

You could go and do some different every day of the year,

0:05:260:05:29

-and still have things left to do.

-Wow.

0:05:290:05:31

Just think about your day, the stuff you've done today.

0:05:310:05:35

-And you're stopping in Leeds?

-Yeah.

0:05:350:05:37

So you've been up in the wilds.

0:05:370:05:39

You've been on one of the oldest train lines in the world,

0:05:390:05:43

seen all this beautiful countryside.

0:05:430:05:45

You've come here to find some art and culture.

0:05:450:05:48

You're going to go back to Leeds. There's a possibility

0:05:480:05:50

you might go for one of the best cocktails in the world,

0:05:500:05:53

-at one of the top ten cocktail bars in the whole world.

-OK, nice.

0:05:530:05:57

And, what's more, they reckon that if Yorkshire had competed

0:05:570:06:00

as its own country in the 2012 Olympics,

0:06:000:06:03

it would have come 12th.

0:06:030:06:05

And they've been sporty in these parts for ages.

0:06:050:06:08

In 1958, this man became the first Brit to win

0:06:080:06:13

a stage of the Tour de France.

0:06:130:06:15

He was already the first Brit to complete the whole thing.

0:06:150:06:18

At the age of 83, Brian Robinson lives close to the 2014 route

0:06:220:06:27

and, of course, is still in the saddle.

0:06:270:06:30

He's looking forward to the exposure.

0:06:300:06:33

It's already around the world.

0:06:330:06:35

I talked to a guy from Canada, he said,

0:06:350:06:38

"We see nothing on television but Yorkshire these days!"

0:06:380:06:40

That's a good sign. We haven't even got there yet.

0:06:400:06:44

So when all those television cameras, which come from

0:06:440:06:49

over 100 countries, are focused on Yorkshire,

0:06:490:06:52

that can't be a bad thing, can it, really?

0:06:520:06:55

That'd be amazing.

0:06:550:06:56

The roads up here have come in for some criticism.

0:06:580:07:01

French cyclist Marcel Kittel described them as "very dangerous",

0:07:010:07:05

particularly where they're narrow and bordered by stone walls.

0:07:050:07:09

But, for Brian, there's no better setting.

0:07:090:07:12

We've got such a varied countryside.

0:07:130:07:16

We've got the canal system.

0:07:160:07:18

We've got the rivers, we've got the seaside. We got the mountaintops.

0:07:180:07:23

Everything, I mean... CAR BEEPS AS IT RUSHES BY

0:07:230:07:27

I've ridden my life around this district, from being 14,

0:07:270:07:31

so I know it pretty well.

0:07:310:07:33

It takes some beating, really.

0:07:330:07:36

So expect to see lots of bikes

0:07:360:07:38

if you come here in the next couple of years

0:07:380:07:40

and cheap rental schemes aren't hard to find.

0:07:400:07:42

But watch out, because it's hilly around here

0:07:420:07:44

and the terrain is tough.

0:07:440:07:46

And here's a few other things you might need to know

0:07:460:07:49

if you're visiting Yorkshire.

0:07:490:07:51

# When I am with you There's no place I'd rather be... #

0:07:510:07:53

Don't believe the stereotype that English food is terrible.

0:07:530:07:56

There's some great local stuff in Yorkshire,

0:07:560:07:59

the home of Wensleydale cheese and all kinds of cakes

0:07:590:08:03

But for something a bit spicier,

0:08:030:08:04

you could try Bradford's famous Curry Mile.

0:08:040:08:07

# If you gave me a chance... #

0:08:070:08:10

If it's a last-minute decision to travel,

0:08:100:08:13

you might find it cheaper to drive from any of the UK's major cities.

0:08:130:08:16

Try to avoid public holidays,

0:08:160:08:18

as the roads are often single carriageway

0:08:180:08:20

and can get congested.

0:08:200:08:22

# There's no place I'd rather be... #

0:08:220:08:24

There are four big sculpture venues in Yorkshire

0:08:240:08:27

which have branded themselves, confusingly,

0:08:270:08:29

as the Sculpture Triangle.

0:08:290:08:31

Despite the geometric absurdity, there's lots to see there,

0:08:310:08:34

and they're all within a 30-minute journey of each other.

0:08:340:08:37

# There's no place I'd rather be. #

0:08:370:08:39

Next up, more of your animated travel tales.

0:08:420:08:45

This one's from Sarah from New Zealand.

0:08:450:08:48

The lonesome traveller blues hit

0:08:500:08:51

when I was halfway through a tour of Eastern Europe.

0:08:510:08:54

As anyone who has travelled alone can tell you,

0:08:540:08:56

it starts to wear you out in pretty typical ways.

0:08:560:08:59

You're lonely, exhausted - you just want a home-cooked meal.

0:08:590:09:02

But happily, my Romanian friend had given me her mother's address

0:09:020:09:05

and encouraged me to visit.

0:09:050:09:07

When I arrived in the heart of eerie Transylvania

0:09:070:09:09

I set out to find the right apartment,

0:09:090:09:11

but the Soviet blocks all looked the same -

0:09:110:09:13

an old, daunting mess of grey cement.

0:09:130:09:16

Eventually, I settled on one apartment in a row of hundreds.

0:09:160:09:20

I knocked on the door gently,

0:09:200:09:21

anticipating a lot of our encounter to be lost in translation.

0:09:210:09:24

A kind, older woman answered

0:09:240:09:26

and through a mixture of mimed movements

0:09:260:09:28

and enunciated English, I explained that I was her daughter's friend.

0:09:280:09:31

She received me with a big grin, quickly ushering me inside.

0:09:310:09:34

A little girl, who I assumed was my friend's sister, was also inside.

0:09:340:09:37

TV BLARES We all sat down to drink tea,

0:09:370:09:39

watch Romanian soap operas and share home-made cake.

0:09:390:09:42

The apartment was really cosy, and full of lamps, souvenirs

0:09:420:09:45

and crochet throws.

0:09:450:09:46

I understood almost nothing of what was happening,

0:09:460:09:49

but soap operas are pretty much the same in every language.

0:09:490:09:52

I also must have wolfed down my cake,

0:09:520:09:53

because my friend's mum quickly offered to go buy food for dinner.

0:09:530:09:56

She put her coat on and slipped out, leaving me with the little girl.

0:09:560:10:00

When she got back, she went to work,

0:10:000:10:02

making a genuine Romanian feast of hearty soup, meat and polenta.

0:10:020:10:05

Throughout the meal, we laughed

0:10:050:10:07

and continued to talk in a muddled mix of hand signals.

0:10:070:10:09

After about five hours, my host pulled out some old photo albums.

0:10:090:10:12

I looked forward to seeing potentially embarrassing photos

0:10:120:10:16

of my friend as a little girl.

0:10:160:10:17

But as the pages turned and we passed an endless array of husbands,

0:10:170:10:21

aunts, uncles and children, I began to have a sinking feeling

0:10:210:10:24

that these were not my friend's relatives.

0:10:240:10:27

I hadn't seen one picture that looked like her.

0:10:270:10:30

My mouth went dry and my heart beat faster.

0:10:300:10:32

I was in the wrong apartment!

0:10:320:10:34

To make matters worse, the woman and the little girl

0:10:340:10:36

began pulling out a mattress for me to sleep on.

0:10:360:10:38

I panicked and stiffened on the couch,

0:10:380:10:40

unsure of how to make a quick exit without being rude.

0:10:400:10:43

In my best gesturing, I explained that I already had a hotel booked.

0:10:430:10:46

I thanked them profusely and made a hasty retreat,

0:10:460:10:48

too embarrassed to linger.

0:10:480:10:50

They waved a warm goodbye and I set off into the concrete Soviet jungle.

0:10:500:10:54

Out of the corner of my eye,

0:10:540:10:55

I noticed the apartment I should have visited,

0:10:550:10:58

and couldn't believe I'd mixed the numbers up.

0:10:580:11:00

As I slinked off into the night, I couldn't shake the image

0:11:000:11:03

of that sweet little girl asking her mother, "Who was that woman?"

0:11:030:11:06

Her mother's inevitable reply, "I have absolutely no idea."

0:11:060:11:09

Now for your weekly roundup from around the world of travel.

0:11:190:11:23

Dozens more places have just been added

0:11:230:11:26

to UNESCO'S list of World Heritage Sites.

0:11:260:11:29

The destinations this time included Botswana's Okavango Delta,

0:11:290:11:34

the Grand Canal in China

0:11:340:11:36

and the ancient Incan Qhapaq Nan road network,

0:11:360:11:39

which goes through six South American countries.

0:11:390:11:43

Late night dancing might soon be allowed again in Japan.

0:11:430:11:47

The government there is considering relaxing the rules.

0:11:470:11:50

Now, not many people know that dancing's only allowed till midnight

0:11:500:11:54

at clubs that have a special license.

0:11:540:11:56

In recent years, there have been police raids

0:11:560:11:59

against venues that ignore the ban.

0:11:590:12:01

And finally,

0:12:030:12:04

it's got volcanoes, sand and almost guaranteed sunshine

0:12:040:12:09

but now people heading to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands,

0:12:090:12:12

should also be greeted with a smile.

0:12:120:12:15

The island's tourism corporation has come up with

0:12:150:12:18

a scheme called Tenerife Buena Gente.

0:12:180:12:21

The aim is to encourage locals to be nicer to tourists.

0:12:210:12:25

Still to come here on The Travel Show...

0:12:290:12:31

Coming up, we head to the party island of Mallorca

0:12:310:12:35

to rave with the over-50s,

0:12:350:12:36

who appear to be the new kids on the block.

0:12:360:12:39

-Not going to bungee.

-I'll watch her, but I won't be going on it.

0:12:390:12:42

She's going to the foam party.

0:12:420:12:44

The Travel Show - your essential guide wherever you're headed.

0:12:450:12:49

Here on The Travel Show, we've tested stuff that's solar powered,

0:12:590:13:02

hand powered and even fire powered.

0:13:020:13:04

But my first one today is a little bit different.

0:13:040:13:07

It takes its energy from a scientific reaction.

0:13:070:13:12

Let's take a look!

0:13:120:13:14

The Brunton Hydrogen Reactor powers your device via USB.

0:13:140:13:19

OK, so the lab coat and the goggles might be a bit much

0:13:190:13:23

but I always wanted to be a scientist.

0:13:230:13:25

You plug in the USB and screw in the hydrogen cylinder.

0:13:250:13:29

And that will then react with the oxygen in the atmosphere

0:13:290:13:32

to produce electricity.

0:13:320:13:34

You'll hear that in just a second.

0:13:340:13:36

IT POPS There you go.

0:13:360:13:38

Each core has the capability to charge your phone three times.

0:13:380:13:42

Once they're empty, you can take them

0:13:420:13:43

to an outdoor shop to be refilled.

0:13:430:13:46

Now, there are quite a few products out there

0:13:460:13:48

that will give you back up power for your devices.

0:13:480:13:51

But what I like about this one

0:13:510:13:52

is it uses the natural elements around you,

0:13:520:13:55

which is kind of cool

0:13:550:13:56

because you know if you're in the middle of nowhere

0:13:560:13:58

then you'll always be able to charge your mobile phone.

0:13:580:14:01

However, if you are going on a long trip

0:14:010:14:04

then you will need quite a few of these.

0:14:040:14:07

Check these out.

0:14:070:14:08

Wireless headphones that sync via Bluetooth

0:14:080:14:11

so you can listen to music or take a phone call but...

0:14:110:14:17

..without using your ear.

0:14:180:14:19

The AfterShokz Bluez uses bone conduction technology

0:14:210:14:25

to transfer a sound waves directly into the inner ear.

0:14:250:14:29

You use the bone at the side to play music or to receive phone calls

0:14:290:14:33

and then the vibrations travel through your skull

0:14:330:14:36

so you can hear the sound.

0:14:360:14:38

People around you might be able to hear some of the sound too,

0:14:380:14:42

so these aren't ideal if you're somewhere quiet

0:14:420:14:44

like an overnight flight.

0:14:440:14:46

But imagine if you are on a city tour,

0:14:460:14:49

perhaps you're going for a run or your on a cycle ride

0:14:490:14:52

and you need to keep your wits about you on a safety level.

0:14:520:14:55

Then something like this allows you

0:14:550:14:57

to listen to your music at the same time.

0:14:570:14:59

It's the best of both worlds.

0:14:590:15:00

Ooh!

0:15:030:15:04

When you're chilling out on a beach,

0:15:060:15:09

you need to be wary about how much UV you're exposing your body to.

0:15:090:15:13

However, on a day like this in London,

0:15:130:15:15

I don't think I need to be so cautious.

0:15:150:15:18

But if I did have the sun beating down on me,

0:15:180:15:21

then something like this could be quite handy.

0:15:210:15:24

The Netatmo June Bracelet has in-built UV sensors

0:15:260:15:30

and syncs with your phone via Bluetooth.

0:15:300:15:32

You'll need to download the app and then input your skin type

0:15:320:15:35

and whether or not you're wearing suncream

0:15:350:15:38

and then you can track how much UV you're exposed to.

0:15:380:15:42

OK, OK, so in weather like this

0:15:430:15:45

it's only showing 0.2 on the reading on the phone.

0:15:450:15:49

And actually, because there isn't a display on the bracelet itself,

0:15:490:15:53

you have to keep the two together, which can restrict its use.

0:15:530:15:56

Plus, this isn't waterproof,

0:15:560:15:58

so you can't take it in the sea or in the swimming pool.

0:15:580:16:01

But we all know how important it is to be safe in the sun

0:16:010:16:04

and something like this can help you track

0:16:040:16:07

how much UV you're exposed to.

0:16:070:16:08

Oh, one other thing, it's actually designed for ladies.

0:16:080:16:11

But I think I pull it off quite well.

0:16:110:16:13

I thought I'd buy everyone in the office a nice bottle of Merlot.

0:16:160:16:19

They'll like that. Oh!

0:16:190:16:21

That'll be ruined. Or is it?

0:16:210:16:24

The Vigo wine carrier is made from a resistant foam

0:16:240:16:27

that turns into a protective shell on impact.

0:16:270:16:31

The makers of this claim it can protect the bottle from typical drops

0:16:310:16:36

but if you go around whacking it against walls,

0:16:360:16:38

you could end up breaking it. I didn't that time!

0:16:380:16:41

But imagine you've brought back

0:16:410:16:42

a lovely bottle of wine from your holidays.

0:16:420:16:45

Then having this can add a layer of protection in your suitcase.

0:16:450:16:48

OK, for the final test, let's see if it can withstand this.

0:16:530:16:58

LAUGHTER No problem!

0:17:020:17:05

To end this week, we're heading to the Mediterranean Sea

0:17:100:17:13

and the Spanish resort island of Mallorca.

0:17:130:17:15

Greg McKenzie's been to find out why clubbing there

0:17:150:17:18

is no longer just for the young.

0:17:180:17:20

Magaluf is Mallorca's best-known resort.

0:17:230:17:27

Situated on the southwest coast of the island,

0:17:270:17:30

it's been attracting holiday-makers for more than 40 years.

0:17:300:17:34

Some say the recipe here is simple -

0:17:340:17:36

palm tree-dotted beaches and plenty of sunshine.

0:17:360:17:40

THEY CHEER

0:17:420:17:45

And of course, for those who like to party,

0:17:450:17:47

Magaluf is always happy to oblige.

0:17:470:17:50

But it's not just teenagers and young adults having all the fun.

0:17:500:17:54

According to one travel company,

0:18:040:18:05

the over-40s are flocking back to places like Ibiza, Ayia Napa

0:18:050:18:09

and here in Magaluf,

0:18:090:18:11

where they're fast becoming the new kids on the block.

0:18:110:18:14

Broadway Travel says it's seen an increase of 38%

0:18:170:18:21

of older people booking package holidays through them

0:18:210:18:25

to clubbing hot spots.

0:18:250:18:27

This is one of the island's newest venues,

0:18:300:18:33

catering for the slightly older market.

0:18:330:18:36

And although there's no age limit on the door,

0:18:360:18:39

this is a favourite haunt for more mature clubbers

0:18:390:18:42

willing to spend that little bit extra

0:18:420:18:44

for a sophisticated clubbing experience.

0:18:440:18:47

I kind of grew up listening to the music,

0:18:470:18:49

as did a lot of my mates and stuff.

0:18:490:18:51

And I decided it'd be a really nice brand to bring over to Mallorca.

0:18:510:18:54

This side of the island's got a bit of bad reputation with the history,

0:18:540:18:57

and the kids and all that kind of thing,

0:18:570:18:59

and we're just trying to lift the area, lift the venue

0:18:590:19:02

and make it a bit more for the adults.

0:19:020:19:03

-And would you say it's working?

-Oh, absolutely, yes. It's fantastic.

0:19:030:19:06

The age group we're getting is between 30 to 55, 60-year-olds.

0:19:060:19:09

They're coming in for the day, during the evenings.

0:19:090:19:11

It's working really well.

0:19:110:19:13

Magaluf, which attracts 3 million visitors yearly,

0:19:130:19:16

has seen its fair share of badly behaved tourists.

0:19:160:19:20

But the local council are keen to clean up this image

0:19:200:19:24

by appealing to all age groups.

0:19:240:19:27

No, it's not just for youngsters.

0:19:270:19:29

As I say, you can have it as lively as you want,

0:19:290:19:31

or you can have a nice, quiet night if you want.

0:19:310:19:34

There's something for everybody.

0:19:340:19:36

Yeah, we come here because we're young at heart.

0:19:360:19:38

And, er, the night life, of course.

0:19:380:19:41

Friendly beaches, friendly people.

0:19:410:19:45

-Where are you going tonight?

-Maybe BCM.

0:19:450:19:47

And what's that, for people that don't know?

0:19:470:19:49

It's a big nightclub. And I'm going to go on the bungee.

0:19:490:19:52

Mum, you've got to go!

0:19:520:19:53

-No, no.

-She'll not go on the bungee.

0:19:530:19:55

I'll watch her, but I won't be going on it.

0:19:550:19:57

She's going to the foam party.

0:19:570:20:00

Word of The Travel Show's visit to Magaluf soon spread,

0:20:000:20:03

and I was invited to speak live on Radio One Mallorca about our trip.

0:20:030:20:07

The station reaches more than half a million holiday-makers

0:20:070:20:11

and British ex-pats across the Balearic Islands.

0:20:110:20:14

-We have a guy from BBC TV, The Travel Show.

-Uh-huh.

0:20:140:20:17

The one that you just mentioned a minute ago

0:20:170:20:19

that has something ridiculous like 80 million viewers a week

0:20:190:20:22

to their programme...

0:20:220:20:23

-And we're desperately...

-..and we're here in Mallorca,

0:20:230:20:26

so can I introduce you to Greg? He can tell you why he's here.

0:20:260:20:28

There's an increase, let's say, in the over-40s reminiscing

0:20:280:20:32

and rekindling their youth by coming back out to Magaluf and Ayia Napa.

0:20:320:20:35

Just have a look around you.

0:20:350:20:37

As the age of the average clubber rises,

0:20:420:20:45

the demand for more luxurious accommodation is also increasing,

0:20:450:20:49

because many over-40s have the disposable income to go upmarket.

0:20:490:20:55

Gordon Phillips is a club director

0:20:550:20:57

who's planning to move into the hotel business next season.

0:20:570:21:01

He's been on the island for 20 years.

0:21:010:21:04

In the last year or two,

0:21:040:21:05

we've noticed a very large increase -

0:21:050:21:07

especially early and late season - in the older generation.

0:21:070:21:11

Whether they're reminiscing their youthfulness or, you know...

0:21:110:21:15

I think the travel industry has helped this to happen,

0:21:150:21:17

because they've changed now -

0:21:170:21:19

you don't have to be seven or 14 nights here,

0:21:190:21:21

you can actually choose to be one night, three nights, five -

0:21:210:21:24

you can package your own holiday.

0:21:240:21:26

This is the biggest nightclub on the island,

0:21:270:21:29

and draws on average 4,000 clubbers a night,

0:21:290:21:32

and Gordon admits it's always going to have a young crowd,

0:21:320:21:36

but now, it's also about offering the older crowd a similar experience.

0:21:360:21:41

And for those caught up the holiday bubble,

0:21:460:21:48

savouring the escapism that a change of scenery

0:21:480:21:51

and anonymity of being abroad offers,

0:21:510:21:55

clubbers who grew up in the '80s

0:21:550:21:57

can relive the excitement of their youth all over again.

0:21:570:22:00

That's all for this week, but join us next week, when...

0:22:060:22:09

'I'll be in Rome,

0:22:090:22:10

'putting my green fingers to the test in an exclusive,

0:22:100:22:13

'behind-the-scenes tour of the Pope's gardens

0:22:130:22:16

'and meeting the people who make it look so spectacular.'

0:22:160:22:19

What about this bit here?

0:22:210:22:22

Ma, lo lascerei.

0:22:220:22:24

-No?

-No.

-No more?

0:22:240:22:26

That's next week. In the meantime, you can follow us in real time

0:22:260:22:30

by signing up to our social media feeds,

0:22:300:22:32

and all the details on how to do that are on your screens now.

0:22:320:22:36

But from me, Ade Adepitan,

0:22:360:22:38

and all the Travel Show team here in Yorkshire,

0:22:380:22:40

it's goodbye.
