..Wilbur is a man on a mission.

When Wilbur Ramirez travelled 7,000 miles

to work as a binman in Jakarta,

it was an experience that changed his life.

When Wilbur arrived home, I think he was very shell-shocked.

He's very much jolly Wilbur, always happy, very loud,

always laughing, but underneath it all, he's very sensitive.

And I know that.

Witnessing an Indonesian family's struggle to survive in poverty

was as tough as anything he's had to do.

It humbled me. It quietened me down a bit.

I see things in a different light.

When he returned,

Wilbur realised he couldn't abandon his new friend Imam.

Imam will always be part of my life.

I just thought to myself, "I've got to help him out,

"I've got to raise as much money as possible for Imam."

Soon Wilbur's going back to Jakarta with the money he's raised

for the next chapter of a story that started 18 months ago.

Hi-ho, off to work we go.

Back then as he set out on his daily round,

Wilbur had no idea of what lay ahead.

Yeah, baby, yeah!

I think binmen are the most important thing London's got,

besides the firemen and the rest of the emergency services.

London's binmen remove more than 55,000 tons of rubbish every day.

Wilbur has been clearing bins

from the streets of Hammersmith and Fulham for five years.

His round covers more than 1,600 houses and takes him

from council estates to some of the swankiest addresses in the city.

It is a hard graft.

You can't come here and think that you're not going to graft.

Everyone here has to sort their rubbish

and put the recycling in separate bags.

The rules are strict.

The black bags are your household rubbish, right?

The orange bags are supposed to be just for recycling.

And for people who don't play ball,

Wilbur's got the might of the council behind him.

We've come to this house, it's got a load of cardboard in front.

They should really have bound it up.

I really don't have to take it if it's like that.

I'm going to get Terry to take a picture of it.

If it happens again, then they could get reprimanded.

But the real villain in the life of a binman is the fly-tipper.

They just dump it there and expect us to take it.

Yeah, I don't like fly-tippers at all, really.

They don't have any consideration for anyone. They just cause havoc.

Tell 'em it's a fly-tip, and what do they want us to do with it?

My job is one of the best jobs in the world.

With his working day usually over by one o'clock,

Wilbur gets to spend plenty of time with his wife Nikki,

and the kids Olivia, Maya and Marlon.

Knowing that I'm providing for my family,

7,000 miles away.

I'm really proud that he is going.

I'm just thinking, what am I going to cook every night for two weeks?

Thai food I've had, but I don't know if that's Indonesia or not.

I'm really baffled of where Indonesia is.

To me, it could be in Timbuktu.

But he's got one final engagement before he goes.

Wilbur's playing a farewell gig with his band for family and friends.

Home to 28 million people and growing.

It's a city of extremes.

In the shadow of gleaming skyscrapers,

millions live in poverty.

With an exploding population creating more and more rubbish,

the authorities struggle to cope.

On the sweltering streets, open tips fester,

and the rivers are choking with filth.

This modern city still depends on just 3,000 impoverished binmen

who scrape a desperate living from Jakarta's rubbish.

Good morning, Jakarta...

For the next ten days,

Wilbur will be working with 28-year-old Imam Saafi,

an Indonesian binman, and his family.

-Imam?

It's time for Wilbur to see where Imam works.

If Wilbur is expecting anything like his high-tech truck,

he's in for a surprise.

Absolutely nothing to what I expected.

A small community of binmen and their families live around the dump.

And for the next ten days, Wilbur will be working amongst them.

Millions of Indonesians live like this,

in hand-built shacks without sanitation or clean drinking water.

For his first night, Wilbur will be sleeping in this house,

where Imam grew up and where his parents still live.

Boy. See how big it is.

It's not even a full arm's width apart.

It's about eight foot in length.

That's just the room, the bed and load of flies.

Can't comprehend it, some of it. There's a lot to take in.

Over here, you've got the rich,

big high rises, big business,

and on this side it's proper slumming, proper slumming.

Imam and the other binmen unload the rubbish

from their carts onto this dump.

Council lorries are then supposed to take it away,

but they often don't.

And Wilbur is about to learn that Jakarta's binmen

face another familiar problem -

fly-tippers.

What are these guys doing?

And they're throwing on your tip?

Do you often have fights with these people dumping their rubbish here?

Your family's got to live here,

and these little so-and-sos are throwing stuff on your patch.

I'd get the right hump, I would.

Imam has lived on this busy street most of his life.

Opposite is an all-night cafe.

There are food stalls, and nearby is a makeshift bar.

In his plywood shack, Wilbur can't escape the noise,

and he's about to meet some of the locals.

Can't sleep. Can't sleep for buggery.

There's rats absolutely everywhere.

There's people milling about outside...

See, that's... you must have heard that.

That's how close the car is passing to my head.

HE SIGHS

Fucking hell.

Today Wilbur begins his training as a Jakarta binman.

In ten days' time, he'll be doing the round all by himself.

Do you think I look bright enough for these boys?

I'm going to go to work. Should be fun.

Imam's round begins on his doorstep.

This is Guntur,

a wealthy residential area near the city's business district.

What's that? Is that a flat or is that a house?

Bloody hell.

That shows how much money there is about the place.

And there's them living just around the corner in a shack.

Imam collects the rubbish from nearly 100 houses

and is paid by the local residents' association.

He works six days a week for about £15.

Whilst some people bag up their rubbish,

most just dump it in a hole in the wall.

I'm scraping out shit, basically.

They've got these little pots between each house

and at the end of the street.

He actually sweeps them out as well.

Where do we go now, mate?

This I can do, I'm used to this bit.

No-one separates the recycling.

Household waste, food, plastic and garden cuttings

all end up in the mix.

And he washes them out. Can you believe that?

This round will take for ever!

It's slow work. In two hours, they've only done 20 houses.

-You do this too?!

-Yeah.

He also does the drains.

What a load of crap.

Imam is responsible for keeping the drains flowing

outside his customers' houses.

We've got a department for this.

The man's in there in bare feet, and all sorts, doing this.

He doesn't know what's in there. Nothing.

For all he knows, it could be glass.

He's in there in bare feet.

He's crazy, man.

I wouldn't do it.

And I know health and safety wouldn't let me do it.

As the cart fills up, Wilbur is beginning to feel the heat.

I don't even think it's coming up to midday yet,

but the sun here is...

It takes Imam at least five hours to do the round.

He starts early and works without a break.

This job is a lot more physically demanding than I ever expected.

This thing here weighs a ton, on top of that.

This is usually a one-man game.

Me and him today, and I'm sweating like a pig.

With two carts full, one more trip will finish the round.

But Wilbur's had enough.

Ohhh. Phew!

That's proper hot!

I tell you what, I'm going to sleep for a week!

In London, once Wilbur's finished his round, the job's done.

But for Imam, there's still hours of work to do.

Paper. Plastic.

Plastics there, paper there.

The wage he gets from the residents' association

for the round barely pays the rent.

In order to eat, Imam, and the whole family,

have to start their second job - recycling.

They pick out anything that can be recycled

and sort it into different piles, which they bag up and sell.

Whole family, hands on deck.

Everyone's doing it. They're going all through all of it for recycling.

I can't do this with gloves on.

Imam and his family work on late into the night.

But there's another side to this city, because Indonesia is

one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Jakarta is a city of ostentatious mansions,

designer brands and glitzy shopping malls.

But very few Indonesians are living this dream.

More than 30 million survive on a dollar a day.

Some of the poorest have made their homes

alongside the rivers that criss-cross the city.

This is where they do their toilet. Straight bang into the river, mate.

This is...

the number two factory.

Like most of Jakarta's rivers, this one is heavily polluted.

Only the well-off can afford binmen coming door to door,

so nearly 20 per cent of the city's rubbish ends up in the river.

I've seen filthy rivers in my time, but this takes the biscuit.

I mean, there's actual islands out there...

More than 100 million people in Indonesia

don't have access to clean drinking water,

whilst in Jakarta, the city sanitation department

tries to clean the rivers, but it can't keep up.

Being here's opened my eyes.

It's opened my eyes and tugged at my heartstrings.

Just over that wall, there's so much money,

but the wealth isn't shared.

The cars I've seen here are amazing.

Untold difference...

shopping malls and people wearing Chanel, Prada, you know...

It's here. For those people that haven't got anything, though,

they work near enough all the hours God sends

and sometimes that just ain't enough.

It's time for Wilbur to get back to work.

Soon he'll he doing Imam's round on his own.

Imam could be sacked at any time

if the residents aren't happy with his work.

He said if he doesn't do all this stuff,

these extra little bits and that,

So to keep his job, he does the best that he can

and actually gets it all actually running.

Back at base, the council dust cart has shown up.

It's meant to come every day, but it rarely does,

so the dump where Imam's family live is never cleared.

It means Imam and his wife Windi are in effect

bringing up their son on a rubbish tip.

Talking to Imam today about him being a dustman,

and he has to fight every single day.

Every single day, to keep his family afloat.

Beyond me. They're so lovely, the family's so lovely.

And to think they can't get out of this.

but it's Sunday today, so no-one's quite sure why.

All the rubbish has been cleared today.

He's well chuffed. I mean, you take a look up the line,

you see everyone either helping or they're just sitting down watching,

cos they're all in complete surprise that it's being done.

The word on the street is the clean-up is because of Wilbur.

How long has that pile been like that?

You've been a dustman five years,

and in five years you've never seen it cleared like this?

But the clean-up is short lived.

and the hour of reckoning has arrived.

Today he is going solo as a Jakarta binman.

I'm doing my checks before I have to go out.

for Imam and the binmen of Guntur District.

There are a lot of people like Imam and his family

and they don't know they have that kind of life.

So it's people like us can make a difference.

Now Wilbur's going back to Jakarta and he's taking the money

they've raised to see what kind of a difference he can make.

Wilbur's returning to a country in the midst of an economic boom.

Indonesia now boasts the 16th largest economy in the world,

growing at more than 6 per cent a year.

But despite this increasing prosperity,

millions of Indonesians live below the poverty line.

Imam Saafi and his family still live in the same part of South Jakarta.

it isn't just Imam's cart that's had a makeover.

The rubbish has all gone.

Yeah, that's brilliant.

And now the trucks come regularly - at least twice a day.

The publicity surrounding Wilbur's last visit

embarrassed the government into action.

The street is no longer a rubbish dump.

Down the road there in front of all the huts and whatever,

it's pretty clear.

For me, that's near enough 100% improvement. You know?

Cos down there used to be stinking.

Amazing transformation.

But the rubbish of Guntur District still needs to be collected.

Come on!

So it's time to put the new cart through its paces.

Feels like I never left!

Still as shitty as I remember it.

It used to take Imam five hours and a lot of heavy lifting

to complete his round.

Hold tight.

Now he can do the whole thing in just an hour.

Tell you what, this is a lot easier than what he had before.

Now it's taking him... not even half the time.

You know. Every business, everything, there's always a small man.

Things have improved in Imam's street,

now that the council lorries are picking up the waste.

But the government here does nothing for the binmen themselves,

who are still living on the brink of destitution.

Does he have to pay for his own petrol to do the round?

Imam wants to put a brave face on things,

but the hard truth is he can barely afford

to run the shiny new motorbike.

I've got to say, I think that's amazing, what you've just told me.

It's like they give you something with one hand

and then they take it away with the other.

Having to pay for your own petrol when you're doing the city's work...

You just feel like you want to fight all the time.

You're in an uphill battle.

It's all right.

Even worse, as a condition of giving him the bike,

the government sends Imam on errands around the city.

He won't talk about the situation,

because he's frightened of losing his job.

They've got the cheek to say to him, "You know what?

"You've got the cart. Can you give us a hand over..."

You know, say, another borough, yeah?

That's what they ask him to do.

And on that, he's got to fund the petrol to go over

and do them a favour.

Tell me that's not taking the mick.

I don't know what people think, but for me,

I think the Indonesian government should be ashamed of themselves.

Despite the increasing wealth here,

60% of Indonesia's workforce still don't receive a formal salary

and have no benefits or employment rights.

Someone's got to stand up and help these people,

and if their own people won't do it...

..maybe us Westerners can.

Now Wilbur has to decide how best to spend the £3,000

he's raised since his first visit to Jakarta.

FMCH, The Foundation for Mother and Child Health,

run a project here working to improve

health, nutrition and education.

Children here often can't go to school,

having to work alongside their parents instead.

So Febri and her team provide them with basic education.

And today they have a new storyteller.

The beast story.

so this is their only opportunity to read.

I think that you lot are doing an amazing job.

Wilbur wants FMCH to start a project

for the rubbish collectors of Guntur District...

..paid for by the money he's raised.

Coming here now and being able to see exactly what you're doing

is absolutely amazing, so if you don't mind,

I'd like to write out a cheque for you.

Wonderful that someone foreign comes to our country

and raises money to help my community in this country,

so I'm very, very thankful.

Today Wilbur's putting his plan into action.

He's spread the word for all the binmen

and their families to meet at a local hall.

They have never come together as a community before,

so he doesn't know if anyone will turn up.

What I would like for you to do today

is actually tell Febri

exactly what you think your community needs.

For the first time, the residents of Imam's street

are discussing their problems together.

Once they have decided what their needs are,

Febri and her team will design a programme

to help them, funded by Wilbur's money.

How soon do you reckon that we could actually put something in place

once you've got all this information?

Probably we need at least a month to set up the programme.

That's quite fast still.

-Yeah?

After two hours of debate,

the community has reached a conclusion.

Health education is their number one priority,

followed by training for the women to help them find work.

Now it's time for Wilbur to reveal the second stage of his plan,

which is close to his heart.

From now on, the dustmen of Guntur District

are going to be properly kitted out.

What size are you, sir?

'The company I work for has kindly donated trousers,

'tops, boots, shovels...'

Everyone's double happy.

At least everyone's going to know who's from the Guntur District.

It was a really, really, really good day.

Everybody went away happy. Everybody.

It's Wilbur's last day in Guntur District.

There's a new colour on the streets, and it's orange.

I've come down here this morning and I tell you, I am double happy.

The guys are in their uniforms,

they've got their fluorescent tops on,

they've got their trousers on, they've got their boots on.

Amazing. It's a proper transformation.

There's about 3,000 dustmen in Jakarta.

At least this little pocket in the Guntur District is sorted out.

Wilbur's stay in Jakarta is coming to an end.
