Andy Giles is a Cornish fisherman

0:00:020:00:03

who swapped his state-of-the-art trawler for a dugout canoe

0:00:030:00:06

on the high seas off Sierra Leone.

0:00:060:00:08

For a minute there I thought we were goners,

0:00:080:00:10

I thought "Oh, my God, here we go", I thought I was going to go for a swim.

0:00:100:00:13

He saw how the livelihood of a small fishing village was being threatened

0:00:130:00:16

by illegal trawlers stealing their fish.

0:00:160:00:19

-They're firing catapults at us now.

-Now he's returning...

0:00:190:00:22

Andy!

0:00:220:00:23

..to a country transformed.

0:00:230:00:25

They've got more than double.

0:00:250:00:27

So happy.

0:00:270:00:28

And he finds himself on the front line of a war against illegal trawling.

0:00:300:00:34

Trawlerman Andy Giles fishes the seas off England's south coast.

0:00:530:00:57

In 2011 he swapped his home comforts for a dug out canoe

0:00:580:01:03

and a tiny village in Sierra Leone.

0:01:030:01:05

'Sierra Leone was tough, it was such an eye-opener,

0:01:050:01:08

'it was like going back in time.'

0:01:080:01:11

They literally take their life in their hands every time they go to sea.

0:01:110:01:14

Oooh, not right at me!

0:01:160:01:17

His experience in west Africa made him take stock of his own life in Cornwall.

0:01:170:01:22

'If I've changed, I've probably become more compassionate towards

0:01:220:01:27

'the children and stuff, I don't do so many days at sea

0:01:270:01:30

'so I can spend more time with the kids and watch them grow up,

0:01:300:01:33

'because they're only young once.'

0:01:330:01:35

I'm really glad I did it,

0:01:350:01:36

and I'm really looking forward to going back out and seeing the lads.

0:01:360:01:39

Because soon, Andy will be returning to Sierra Leone for the next chapter

0:01:390:01:44

in a story that began 18 months ago.

0:01:440:01:46

Back then, Andy's life as a fisherman had rarely taken him far

0:01:510:01:55

from the coast of Cornwall.

0:01:550:01:57

Coming down, mate.

0:01:570:01:59

He's the proud owner and skipper of the 100-tonne trawler, the Guiding Light.

0:01:590:02:03

'I've not always been a fisherman.

0:02:080:02:10

'I worked in a shop when I was younger,

0:02:100:02:13

'albeit a fish shop, but I didn't like it.'

0:02:130:02:17

I decided to go the other route and go catching the fish.

0:02:170:02:21

You couldn't do the job if you didn't love it.

0:02:210:02:24

It's just a way of life, I think, more than a job to me.

0:02:240:02:27

When you put the nets away in the morning,

0:02:290:02:31

you don't know what you're going to catch.

0:02:310:02:33

It's a nice surprise.

0:02:330:02:34

I still get excited now, a little bit, which is a bit strange

0:02:340:02:37

and funny, I suppose, but...

0:02:370:02:39

Costing three-quarters of a million pounds,

0:02:390:02:41

Andy's trawler is designed to take the strain out of fishing.

0:02:410:02:45

On a good day, he can land more than a thousand pounds' worth of fish.

0:02:470:02:51

The monkfish, that's big value fish. Sea bass, big value fish.

0:03:000:03:05

Quite happy with that, really. It's all right.

0:03:050:03:07

Once on board, the catch is gutted,

0:03:110:03:14

sorted, washed and put below decks,

0:03:140:03:17

ready for market.

0:03:170:03:19

The Guiding Light is equipped with the latest technology

0:03:190:03:22

to locate and hunt down the fish.

0:03:220:03:24

There are also a few home comforts on board.

0:03:260:03:29

Obviously, a nice chair, telly and the internet,

0:03:290:03:32

it's all nice to have, because you're spending a lot of time here,

0:03:320:03:35

so, keep the boredom factor away as well, obviously.

0:03:350:03:40

In a few days' time, Andy will be leaving his trawler and saying goodbye

0:03:400:03:44

to the quiet Cornish village where he lives with his family.

0:03:440:03:48

Count them. One, two, three, four, five, six.

0:03:480:03:52

Are you counting all the fishies?

0:03:520:03:54

He's heading off into the unknown

0:03:540:03:56

with only his fishing skills to fall back on.

0:03:560:03:59

It's a question of, "Can Andy hack it as a fisherman

0:03:590:04:02

"when everything's taken away from him?" Can I do it?

0:04:020:04:05

I don't know, I'm going to have to wait and see. Hopefully I can.

0:04:050:04:08

Sierra Leone, West Africa -

0:04:110:04:13

a country of five million people on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

0:04:130:04:18

This is one of the poorest countries in the world.

0:04:180:04:21

Its large coastal population relies on one thing to stay alive - fish.

0:04:210:04:27

Every day, thousands of subsistence fishermen put to sea

0:04:290:04:32

in wooden canoes in a daily struggle to feed their families.

0:04:320:04:37

Now, their way of life is under threat.

0:04:370:04:39

Trawlers from as far afield as China

0:04:390:04:42

are illegally plundering the coastal fishing grounds

0:04:420:04:45

and leaving very little for the locals.

0:04:450:04:48

Much of the country's fish finds its way to the tables of Europe and the Far East.

0:04:480:04:54

Yet more than a third of Sierra Leone's children are chronically malnourished.

0:04:540:04:59

Just looks like there's nothing here at all.

0:05:110:05:14

There's no buildings, there's no power lines,

0:05:140:05:17

there's no... there's nothing, nothing at all.

0:05:170:05:21

Andy is heading to the remote south of the country

0:05:210:05:23

and a small fishing village called Mania.

0:05:230:05:26

Whether they'll have painted faces and everything

0:05:270:05:30

and dance round the fire in loincloths, I don't know,

0:05:300:05:34

but I'm expecting the worst at the moment, to be honest,

0:05:340:05:37

so... Not that that's bad, but totally different, totally alien to what I'm used to.

0:05:370:05:42

You sure someone lives here?

0:05:440:05:45

Cos I don't think there's anybody that's living here, to be honest.

0:05:450:05:48

Hey.

0:06:000:06:02

Andy's hosts for the week will be Kaba Cane

0:06:020:06:05

and his cousin Ishmael.

0:06:050:06:08

-Ishmael?

-Yes. How are you?

-I'm good.

0:06:080:06:11

-Are you good?

-Yeah, yeah, I'm good.

-OK.

0:06:110:06:13

-Plenty of fish?

-Yes.

0:06:130:06:15

Mania village is home to a few hundred people who, like Andy,

0:06:150:06:19

make their living from the sea.

0:06:190:06:21

'Everybody from the village seems to have turned up

0:06:210:06:23

'to see who's the white man in the boat, so...it was very nice.'

0:06:230:06:26

Kids wouldn't leave my hand go.

0:06:260:06:29

'Then one would let go and then another one would fill in,

0:06:290:06:32

'so it's...very, very friendly, to say the least.'

0:06:320:06:36

I didn't expect that, to be honest.

0:06:360:06:39

I have friends!

0:06:390:06:41

For the next week, Andy will be living with Ishmael's family.

0:06:430:06:46

So come with us, come and see.

0:06:470:06:49

-The bed.

-Yeah.

0:06:530:06:54

-So, welcome.

-OK, thank you very much.

0:06:550:06:58

And these are all your kids?

0:06:580:06:59

-You're sure they're not all yours?

-Yes.

0:07:040:07:07

He'll be joining one of Mania's ten boat crews

0:07:070:07:12

and he's keen to get started.

0:07:120:07:14

Can you show me the boat we're going to go to sea on?

0:07:160:07:19

OK, cool.

0:07:190:07:21

Until now, Andy has no idea what kind of boat he'll be fishing from.

0:07:220:07:27

-OK. Engine, this?

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:07:330:07:36

Andy will be putting to sea in what is, in effect, a hollowed-out tree.

0:07:360:07:41

Big sun, so we'll see the net.

0:07:440:07:45

So I see the boat, it's got a hole at the back

0:07:470:07:49

and it's stitched together with twine at the back.

0:07:490:07:52

-Yes, the breakers here, yeah? Pushed the bottom of the boat in?

-Yes.

0:07:570:08:00

The breakers which damaged Kaba's canoe mark the point

0:08:000:08:04

where the river meets the ocean.

0:08:040:08:07

Often rising up to four metres high, they form a daunting barrier

0:08:070:08:11

to the open sea and the best fishing grounds.

0:08:110:08:15

How safe is it to go through the breakers in a boat?

0:08:150:08:18

-Are you expecting me to do this?

-Yes.

0:08:180:08:20

I wouldn't like to go through the breakers in my boat.

0:08:220:08:25

It's not easy. It's not easy.

0:08:250:08:27

Ishmael and Kaba have picked up on Andy's nervousness.

0:08:290:08:32

-In a boat like this?

-Yes.

-Zero.

0:08:350:08:37

ISHMAEL CHUCKLES

0:08:390:08:42

In a boat, but not this sort of boat.

0:08:440:08:46

-It was not this?

-No.

0:08:460:08:48

Can I swim?

0:08:490:08:51

Yeah. I can swim, yeah.

0:08:510:08:54

It's beginning to dawn on Andy that all his fishing experience

0:08:540:08:57

might not mean much out here.

0:08:570:08:59

I don't suppose they have much faith in me at the moment

0:09:020:09:04

and you have to prove yourself when you're a fisherman.

0:09:040:09:06

Anybody can say "I'm a fisherman." I'll have to prove myself.

0:09:060:09:10

I don't want to let anybody down or anything,

0:09:100:09:12

so... We'll have to see later on and see where it takes us.

0:09:120:09:17

Kaba and Ishmael are also having their doubts

0:09:210:09:24

about taking Andy through the breakers.

0:09:240:09:26

Andy is going to have to get used to having fish for dinner...

0:10:010:10:06

and lunch...

0:10:060:10:07

and breakfast.

0:10:070:10:09

It's very spicy.

0:10:120:10:14

-Eat.

-I am eating, I'm eating.

0:10:160:10:18

I have a small appetite.

0:10:180:10:20

As Andy reflects on his first day in Sierra Leone,

0:10:250:10:28

his semi-detached house in Cornwall

0:10:280:10:30

is beginning to feel a long way away.

0:10:300:10:32

We had tea, rice and spicy fish which I wasn't too keen on.

0:10:340:10:38

It's getting late, there's no electrics,

0:10:400:10:42

there's no lights on anywhere, there's no TV. There's no...

0:10:420:10:45

There still seem to be people milling around

0:10:450:10:49

but a very, very strange place to be.

0:10:490:10:51

A very strange place.

0:10:510:10:52

We'll see how tomorrow goes and hopefully it's OK.

0:10:540:10:58

Overnight the village fishermen have been busy.

0:11:110:11:14

No sleep?

0:11:170:11:19

-1.30, we move.

-When do you sleep?

0:11:220:11:24

Little has changed in this fishing community for centuries.

0:11:340:11:37

But the way of life here is now hanging in the balance.

0:11:390:11:42

The rich fishing grounds along this coast are supposed to be protected.

0:11:450:11:49

There's a five-mile exclusion zone to keep out trawlers,

0:11:490:11:54

but increasingly, big foreign boats are fishing illegally close

0:11:540:11:58

to the shore, with tragic consequences for the villagers.

0:11:580:12:01

Tragic story. It's...

0:12:360:12:38

You know, not only are you fighting for a living,

0:12:380:12:41

they're wrecking everything for you.

0:12:410:12:42

We suffer.

0:12:420:12:44

Everybody is suffering because of these trawlers.

0:12:440:12:46

I can't see the trawlers now. They're not here. When are they here?

0:12:460:12:50

How anybody deals with having your loved ones, nephews,

0:13:000:13:04

uncles, be killed at sea is shocking, really. They're losing life.

0:13:040:13:10

It just seems a free-for-all here for the big trawlers.

0:13:100:13:14

Early next morning Andy is about to see the problem first-hand.

0:13:200:13:24

KNOCKS ON DOOR

0:13:240:13:26

So Kaba's just knocked, woke me up at three o'clock

0:13:290:13:35

and there's trawlers on the beach.

0:13:350:13:37

They do sound close.

0:13:430:13:44

I can actually hear the engines.

0:13:460:13:48

Where we were yesterday.

0:13:530:13:54

I would say he's closer in than we were yesterday.

0:13:550:13:58

Kaba and Ishmael were about to go night fishing when they spotted

0:13:580:14:02

the two illegal trawlers working under cover of darkness.

0:14:020:14:06

No.

0:14:080:14:10

You can't go now?

0:14:100:14:11

You can't go because he's there. There's another one here.

0:14:150:14:18

The other one here, he's turned his lights off. He is being sneaky.

0:14:180:14:23

Sneaky, lights. He's even closer. Is he...?

0:14:230:14:27

The trawlers make it too dangerous to go out fishing.

0:14:270:14:31

KABA SIGHS

0:14:310:14:32

A whole night's work has been ruined.

0:14:430:14:46

The next day the village needs fish and the trawlers seem to have gone.

0:14:540:14:58

It means that it's time for Andy to have his first taste of fishing

0:15:000:15:04

Sierra Leone style.

0:15:040:15:06

So what's this for?

0:15:060:15:07

-What's it made of?

-Plastic.

0:15:090:15:10

-Plastic?

-Yes.

-This looks like an umbrella.

-Yes.

0:15:100:15:13

-An umbrella and plastic.

-Umbrella, OK. And this is a plastic bag here?

0:15:130:15:18

-Yes.

-OK.

0:15:180:15:19

I did a little bit of sailing when I was younger

0:15:190:15:21

-so I'll see I can remember, OK?

-OK.

0:15:210:15:23

-You can remember?

-Yes.

0:15:250:15:27

-It's hot today, isn't it?

-Oh, it's hot.

0:15:310:15:33

It's about 30 degrees today, at least, I would think.

0:15:330:15:36

Kaba and Ishmael are setting a punishing pace.

0:15:400:15:43

Andy is struggling to keep up.

0:15:430:15:46

It's easier standing up to be honest.

0:15:530:15:55

Sitting down does your knees in, your legs in and your elbows in.

0:15:550:15:59

See the road?

0:16:010:16:02

Ah, the road, the road through, the gateway, yes?

0:16:030:16:06

Andy's about to tackle the breakers for the first time.

0:16:060:16:09

Yes?

0:16:120:16:13

OK.

0:16:150:16:16

They've already being paddling for two miles and Andy's exhausted.

0:16:200:16:25

But the only safe way through the breakers is at speed.

0:16:250:16:28

ANDY LAUGHS

0:16:540:16:57

Oh, dear.

0:17:030:17:04

The breakers are behind them.

0:17:080:17:09

Now it's time to fish.

0:17:110:17:13

The lines are set and all they can do is wait.

0:17:150:17:20

That's not a good start.

0:17:490:17:50

We spent all morning baiting hooks up and cutting bait

0:17:520:17:55

and then to catch nothing, it's just...

0:17:550:17:57

..poor. Very, very poor. I feel for them, really.

0:17:590:18:03

If Ishmael and Kaba don't catch any fish, their families will go hungry.

0:18:050:18:10

I don't know, I'm just getting more demoralised.

0:18:170:18:19

I just hope that we catch a couple of fish in a minute.

0:18:190:18:22

There's still a few hooks to go so...

0:18:220:18:24

The foreign trawlers have done their damage.

0:18:300:18:32

As a trawler man himself, Andy knows the impact they can have.

0:18:320:18:36

These are, unfortunately, prime trawling grounds

0:18:370:18:40

so the trawler's probably been here in the night,

0:18:400:18:43

two or three boats here,

0:18:430:18:45

and what they haven't scooped up

0:18:450:18:48

they've chased away so that's why there's nothing here.

0:18:480:18:52

But the trawlers didn't get everything.

0:18:560:19:00

So we have ONE.

0:19:000:19:02

That's not going to go very far between 30 people.

0:19:020:19:04

With the tide turning, the breakers are rising. It's time to head home.

0:19:140:19:19

Their safe passage now depends on a sail made out of plastic bags

0:19:250:19:29

and umbrellas.

0:19:290:19:30

Skipper Kaba has to judge exactly the right moment to make his move.

0:19:400:19:44

Kaba is using the tiller and the sail to keep the dugout on course.

0:19:470:19:51

He has to try and stay ahead of the breakers.

0:19:520:19:55

One false move and the canoe will capsize.

0:20:020:20:04

For a minute there, I thought we were goners.

0:20:180:20:21

But a breaker picked us up.

0:20:230:20:24

The boat started to heel, and then we're broadside onto the breaker

0:20:240:20:27

and it was...

0:20:270:20:29

My heart was going at ten to the dozen, I was...

0:20:290:20:33

I thought, "Oh, my God, here we go."

0:20:330:20:35

I thought I was going for a swim.

0:20:350:20:37

Luckily, Kaba, fantastic captain today, some hairy moments.

0:20:370:20:41

-I am a good captain.

-You are the only captain.

0:20:510:20:54

Andy has survived his encounter with the breakers but the poor catch

0:21:010:21:05

has driven home how illegal trawling affects the village of Mania.

0:21:050:21:09

CICADAS SING

0:21:090:21:11

'I feel their anger.

0:21:110:21:14

'But what can you do?'

0:21:140:21:15

You've got a wood canoe, basically, against a 30 metre steel trawler.

0:21:150:21:20

They're not going to do anything at all. You can't do anything.

0:21:200:21:23

They've already lost one life, how can they lose any more?

0:21:230:21:26

They can't do it so... It's such a shame.

0:21:260:21:28

I feel like I want to help out by some means because these

0:21:290:21:32

are good, good men just working to provide for their families.

0:21:320:21:36

No fish? You haven't got any?

0:21:500:21:53

Next morning and the only thing for breakfast is yesterday's leftovers.

0:21:530:21:58

Are we eating?

0:22:000:22:01

Everybody is talking about the poor catch.

0:22:060:22:08

I have to go to sea to feed my family

0:22:250:22:27

but it's nothing like that, I'm afraid. What I go through is nothing.

0:22:270:22:33

We'd always get by and if you go on the dole

0:22:330:22:35

there's the government that give you money anyway so...

0:22:350:22:38

if these don't go to work, that's it, they cease to exist. It's...

0:22:380:22:43

It's a little bit different.

0:22:430:22:45

A lot different, in fact! So, yeah...

0:22:450:22:48

Without fish to sell,

0:22:500:22:52

the villagers can't afford the most basic necessities

0:22:520:22:55

and Andy is about to learn just how precarious life is in Mania village.

0:22:550:23:00

CHILD CRIES

0:23:000:23:02

-Malaria?

-Yes, Malaria.

0:23:150:23:17

Do children die in this village from catching malaria?

0:23:170:23:20

Makes it all real. Blimey.

0:23:360:23:39

You think if your own daughter's ill it's...

0:23:410:23:44

I don't know. It's...

0:23:460:23:48

..hugely, hugely upsetting.

0:23:500:23:52

It just makes you think of home and stuff so...

0:23:550:23:57

OK... So...

0:23:570:24:00

It seems to be that the children are suffering more than anybody else

0:24:130:24:16

or they suffer first.

0:24:160:24:19

It's very shocking. It sounds like everybody has lost a child.

0:24:210:24:24

Luckily, today, there is medicine for Ishmael's daughter

0:24:270:24:32

but the future of her community and thousands like it

0:24:320:24:35

along the West African Coast

0:24:350:24:37

won't be secure until illegal trawling is controlled.

0:24:370:24:41

It just feels like I want to help out more, I want to...

0:24:410:24:44

Which I will try, but it's um...

0:24:460:24:48

I feel for them.

0:24:500:24:52

Andy's decided to find out more about the illegal trawlers

0:24:580:25:02

that blight the villagers' lives.

0:25:020:25:04

So we're off to Freetown to hopefully see the trawlers

0:25:060:25:10

that we've seen in the darkness.

0:25:100:25:13

Whether they will let us aboard the boats, I don't know.

0:25:130:25:16

I doubt it, but if we can blag our way on some way, we will.

0:25:160:25:21

I'm hoping I can sort of say I am a fisherman from the UK

0:25:210:25:24

and they might let me on,

0:25:240:25:25

but I'm going to have to hold these two back when we get there because

0:25:250:25:28

they could be stepping aboard to have a word with the skipper, so...

0:25:280:25:32

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.

0:25:370:25:40

Here trawlers transfer their catch on to bigger ships to be frozen

0:25:400:25:44

and shipped around the world, including Europe.

0:25:440:25:48

Most trawlers are only interested in high-value fish.

0:25:480:25:52

All the rest, including thousands of tonnes that local people could eat,

0:25:520:25:56

are thrown away.

0:25:560:25:58

It's a multi-million pound business.

0:25:580:26:01

Do you think we'll be able to get aboard these boats? I hope so.

0:26:070:26:11

-So these are the same vessels, yes?

-Yes.

0:26:140:26:16

-You think so? This big one out there?

-This big one.

0:26:160:26:19

How do you feel to see the trawlers up close?

0:26:190:26:22

The only way for Andy to speak to the trawler skippers is to hire

0:26:350:26:39

a local motorised canoe.

0:26:390:26:41

You can see that Kaba's getting very animated.

0:26:480:26:52

Getting very excited about seeing the trawlers up close.

0:26:520:26:55

I hope the skipper doesn't come out of the wheelhouse

0:26:550:26:58

cos he could be jumping over and having a dust up so...

0:26:580:27:01

As they approach, the first trawler weighs anchor.

0:27:020:27:05

You can see he's turning. He's trying to evade us, definitely.

0:27:120:27:16

There's one alongside here. We'll go, he can't run. He can't run.

0:27:220:27:26

The crew of the second trawler aren't interested in talking either.

0:27:260:27:30

No idea. Well, maybe he'll hold, yeah, yeah.

0:27:310:27:34

And they seem prepared to do anything to keep Andy away from their boat.

0:27:380:27:43

They obviously don't want us to film

0:27:430:27:44

because they're firing catapults at us now.

0:27:440:27:47

Whoa, whoa.

0:27:540:27:55

He's firing a catapult at us.

0:27:560:27:58

He's firing stones off the deck, or bits of steel off the deck at us

0:27:580:28:02

to get us to go.

0:28:020:28:03

Ishmael and Kaba are saying this is what happens

0:28:150:28:17

when they get near them at sea.

0:28:170:28:19

When they row up in their little boats,

0:28:190:28:20

they're on the big boat firing stones at them.

0:28:200:28:22

It's just unbelievable. It should be the other way round.

0:28:220:28:25

I can't believe how close that was.

0:28:270:28:28

It's quite hairy, really, someone throwing ballbearings at you.

0:28:280:28:31

They obviously know what they're doing is totally,

0:28:310:28:33

totally out of order and...

0:28:330:28:36

wrong.

0:28:360:28:38

Andy has discovered how powerless the fishermen feel.

0:28:410:28:45

Lack of resources, and corruption mean that the government here

0:28:450:28:49

does little to enforce the fishing laws.

0:28:490:28:51

Andy's been in the village for a few days now

0:29:000:29:03

and the catches are still low.

0:29:030:29:05

They desperately need a good haul to feed their families

0:29:070:29:11

but Ishmael isn't feeling hopeful.

0:29:110:29:13

So you're not expecting many fish?

0:29:140:29:17

That's a shame.

0:29:170:29:18

No.

0:29:210:29:22

Today the gods of the sea are on their side.

0:29:250:29:28

Oh, another one, yeah?

0:29:290:29:31

Whoa!

0:29:360:29:37

-Is that good, yes?

-Yes.

0:29:480:29:49

-Good fish?

-Good fish.

-Happy?

-Yeah, happy now.

0:29:490:29:51

Oh, good, you're happy. As long as you're happy.

0:29:510:29:54

I'm happy now. Yeah, happier now we've caught a fish.

0:29:560:30:00

-We need to see another one now.

-Spanish.

-Spanish?

-Yes.

0:30:000:30:03

Hey! Here he is. Spanish.

0:30:100:30:14

-Throw him back now?

-No, no, no!

0:30:160:30:20

I'm so happy now with this.

0:30:200:30:22

They probably think I was a right Jonah. They won't bring me again,

0:30:220:30:26

but we've caught some fish and they're happy

0:30:260:30:28

so that's all good, I'm really pleased for them.

0:30:280:30:30

For once, the trawlers seem to have left them a decent catch.

0:30:340:30:38

We've actually caught some fish so now we can eat

0:30:410:30:43

and I've felt a bit guilty because they have an extra mouth to feed

0:30:430:30:47

so to actually contribute is... It feels good.

0:30:470:30:51

This way?

0:30:510:30:52

But a Mania fisherman's duties aren't over

0:30:520:30:55

when the fish is landed.

0:30:550:30:57

-All that on my head?

-Yes.

-Yes.

-I can try, but I might drop them.

0:30:570:31:02

Well, you have to carry them.

0:31:020:31:04

-Well, I don't know, I don't carry things on my head.

-Never?

-Never.

0:31:040:31:07

-Try.

-Try.

0:31:070:31:09

Yes, but...

0:31:090:31:10

The three fish are about 20 pounds in weight.

0:31:290:31:31

It's actually not heavy, it's just flattening the top of my head.

0:31:310:31:37

-I can't carry this all that way, no way. No chance.

-Take it.

-No.

0:31:450:31:48

I can't carry it that far, no.

0:31:480:31:50

-You're lazy.

-I'm not lazy.

0:31:560:31:58

-I've carried six, I've carried six.

-You carried six?

-Yes.

0:31:580:32:02

Women have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten...

0:32:030:32:07

-Oh, one dozen?

-One dozen on their head.

0:32:070:32:10

Tonight there's food for everyone.

0:32:170:32:19

When there's more fish than the villagers can eat,

0:32:350:32:38

they sell what's left over for badly needed cash.

0:32:380:32:42

After a big catch, Mania's smoke houses work around the clock.

0:32:420:32:48

They're smoking the fish to preserve it.

0:32:480:32:50

Obviously, fresh fish in Africa is not going to last

0:32:500:32:54

because there's no fridges, no freezers, no ice, so fresh fish is

0:32:540:32:57

not going to be fresh for more than four or five hours, less than that.

0:32:570:33:00

Two or three hours in the sun. So...

0:33:000:33:02

they need to smoke the fish to preserve it, to keep

0:33:020:33:07

it for the end of the week cos the market is at the end of the week.

0:33:070:33:11

The smoke houses need wood

0:33:180:33:20

and finding it gives yet another job for Kaba and Ishmael.

0:33:200:33:23

They don't stop, they're machines. I've just had a go at it.

0:33:420:33:46

The wood is like bloody concrete.

0:33:460:33:48

I'm knackered after cutting one, well, two things.

0:33:480:33:51

I'm absolutely shattered. My hands are hurting.

0:33:510:33:54

I'm going to sound like a right Jessie when this goes out at home.

0:33:540:33:59

They don't stop.

0:33:590:34:00

He's up the bloody tree doing it now! It's just...

0:34:000:34:03

Timber!

0:34:060:34:07

They're fishermen, tree surgeons, they're builders,

0:34:080:34:14

they're net makers. It's just... You know...

0:34:140:34:19

They give Steve Redgrave a good run for his money in the rowing boat.

0:34:190:34:22

It's just... They just don't stop.

0:34:220:34:25

I'm cutting, I'm cutting.

0:34:300:34:32

Yes, OK.

0:34:400:34:41

-Cup of tea?

-Cup of tea!

-Yeah, yeah.

0:34:410:34:44

-Fatima, me carry?

-Yes.

0:34:470:34:50

Yes?

0:34:500:34:51

Fatima, Ishmael's wife, is the boss of the smokehouse.

0:34:510:34:55

OK?

0:34:550:34:56

You are going to carry more?

0:34:560:34:58

OK?

0:35:040:35:07

You're going to carry more?

0:35:070:35:08

Yes.

0:35:080:35:09

Blimey. I feel so inadequate now.

0:35:110:35:14

Look.

0:35:140:35:15

Fatima keeps the smokehouse running,

0:35:190:35:22

turning the catch into a commodity that is the staple

0:35:220:35:25

diet across Sierra Leone.

0:35:250:35:27

Its damn hot in here.

0:35:290:35:30

The mouth here, and the mouth here,

0:35:360:35:37

so it's been... It's literally been peeled apart into halves.

0:35:370:35:41

So it doesn't look that appetising with all the bugs

0:35:410:35:44

crawling all over it.

0:35:440:35:45

It's just alive with things.

0:35:450:35:47

-Really?

-Mmm.

-OK.

0:35:510:35:53

Wow. Um...

0:35:550:35:57

Feeding and supporting hundreds of people solely by fishing

0:36:010:36:04

demands relentless graft from everyone in the village.

0:36:040:36:08

If they came and worked this hard in England, they'd be rich people

0:36:120:36:18

because they just work and they work and they work some more.

0:36:180:36:22

Fatima today, fantastic. Three kids to look after.

0:36:250:36:29

She's cooked everybody breakfast, she's then done the washing.

0:36:290:36:34

Then she's got down and got wood, and chopped the word, and then she's

0:36:340:36:37

got water, and then she's smoked all the fish, 40 hours a week.

0:36:370:36:42

They would do 40 hours a day if it was possible.

0:36:420:36:45

A week into his stay in the village

0:37:050:37:07

Andy is going with Kaba and Ishmael to take their dried fish to market.

0:37:070:37:11

Fish accounts for 70% of the animal protein

0:37:200:37:23

consumed in Sierra Leone.

0:37:230:37:26

Local fishermen come to the market in Yagoi to sell their catch.

0:37:270:37:32

Ishmael and Kaba are trying to organise something

0:37:320:37:34

to try and get the fish ashore, but there's no room for anything.

0:37:340:37:37

There's no room to stand, hardly. It's absolute chaos.

0:37:370:37:41

Kaba thinks he's found a buyer for the fish.

0:37:440:37:47

WOMAN SPEAKS

0:37:470:37:49

-We think they're worth 260,000, yes?

-Yes.

0:37:490:37:52

260. Can't pay that.

0:37:520:37:54

-You not pay that?

-No.

-You tell how much.

0:37:540:37:57

-120.

-No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

0:37:570:38:02

-250.

-It's too much.

-Too much?

-Yeah.

0:38:040:38:09

Three big men, look. Look. We need to eat!

0:38:090:38:14

-That what they're saying? 190?

-180.

0:38:140:38:16

-190.

-180.

-190.

-Yes.

0:38:160:38:20

-Yes?

-Yeah.

-Yes.

0:38:200:38:22

-She's agreed.

-It's good.

-Yes? OK, it's good?

0:38:220:38:25

-Yes.

-Good. Happy?

-Yeah, happy.

-Good, good.

0:38:250:38:28

So, the money we have for the fish is 30 quid,

0:38:280:38:32

so they need to split that six ways.

0:38:320:38:35

They split it one each for the fishermen,

0:38:350:38:37

which apparently I'm one of them,

0:38:370:38:40

so that's three gone.

0:38:400:38:42

There's one for the transport,

0:38:420:38:45

one for the smoking house

0:38:450:38:47

and one for the nets and stuff, so that's six.

0:38:470:38:53

That's a fiver, so I've worked for a fiver for a week.

0:38:530:38:57

The guys have done the same, fiver each for the week.

0:38:570:38:59

It's, um...a fiver.

0:38:590:39:04

So hard for them. So, so hard.

0:39:060:39:08

Heartbreaking to see what they've gone through all week,

0:39:080:39:11

and this is just one week that might have been a good week for them.

0:39:110:39:14

It's heartbreaking how hard they work. I'd like to take them on.

0:39:140:39:17

They could work for me any day of the week,

0:39:170:39:19

because these guys just... Well, they don't know when they're beaten.

0:39:190:39:23

They'll just carry on and on and on and on and, you know,

0:39:230:39:27

hat off to them.

0:39:270:39:30

-Thanks for looking after me, yeah?

-Thank you for that. Thanks.

0:39:460:39:49

-OK.

-So happy.

-Yes, good. Two fantastic guys.

0:39:490:39:53

I couldn't have wished to be away with anybody else, really.

0:39:530:39:56

Really taken to them.

0:39:560:39:59

They're two good friends I've got, I think,

0:39:590:40:01

so hopefully they feel the same way, but I'm sure they do.

0:40:010:40:04

-Hi, Ed.

-Hi, Andy.

-All right, mate? Had any joy?

0:40:080:40:11

It's now 18 months since Andy returned from Sierra Leone

0:40:110:40:15

but he's never forgotten the fishermen of Mania.

0:40:150:40:18

How many hooks are there?

0:40:180:40:19

There's a box of a thousand, there should be two boxes.

0:40:190:40:22

Two boxes of hooks, fantastic. What they were using was,

0:40:220:40:25

if you can imagine, rusty and bent up.

0:40:250:40:28

When I came back I wasn't expecting people

0:40:280:40:31

to be so supportive. I just thought I was doing a TV programme

0:40:310:40:34

and it would be all forgotten, but the whole community pulled together.

0:40:340:40:37

I hope its... Make some use of it for them. Have a good trip.

0:40:370:40:40

Cheers. People wanted to help out, wanted to raise money,

0:40:400:40:43

wanted to do things for these people because they felt their plight.

0:40:430:40:46

All over the country, not just in Looe itself and not just in Cornwall.

0:40:460:40:49

It was a nationwide thing, people from all over ringing us up.

0:40:490:40:53

Wanted to know where they can donate money.

0:40:530:40:55

Now Andy's heading back to see how the £7,000 raised has helped

0:40:550:41:00

and how the villagers are faring in their struggle

0:41:000:41:03

with illegal trawlers.

0:41:030:41:05

Before he goes he's doing some last-minute shopping

0:41:050:41:08

for Kaba and Ishmael.

0:41:080:41:11

-Phil, do you do barrel weights?

-Barrels like that.

0:41:110:41:15

Ah, right, OK, yes. Because they were using sort of...

0:41:150:41:18

-spark plugs and stones wrapped up.

-Were they?

0:41:180:41:22

I'm really looking forward going back out and seeing the lads

0:41:220:41:25

It's the same job at the end of the day,

0:41:250:41:27

it's in a different continent but

0:41:270:41:29

they work with nets, I work with nets.

0:41:290:41:31

The end product is catching fish and that's what we're all there to do.

0:41:310:41:35

I really want these guys to catch more fish,

0:41:350:41:37

I don't want them to go to sea and not catch anything.

0:41:370:41:40

I want them to be happy with what they're doing

0:41:400:41:43

and what makes a fisherman happy is catching more fish.

0:41:430:41:47

It's a million miles from where I live in Cornwall, isn't it?

0:41:540:41:57

It's totally different.

0:41:570:41:59

I'm starting to get really excited now, we're getting close,

0:42:000:42:03

not far away now, getting a few butterflies in the stomach.

0:42:030:42:08

-Hooray!

-Andy!

-Kaba!

-Andy!

0:42:130:42:17

HE LAUGHS

0:42:170:42:19

Andy!

0:42:190:42:22

-Andy!

-How are you doing?

0:42:250:42:27

-A new boat?

-Yes..

-A new boat. And you've painted it.

0:42:390:42:44

-The old boat is gone. Finished?

-The boat is finished.

-Smoke, fire?

0:42:440:42:48

-The old boat broke up? On the breakers?

-Yes.

0:42:500:42:53

You sink? In the water? You swim? No? Yeah?

0:42:530:42:58

-Hello. How are you?

-Andy.

-Andy.

0:42:580:43:04

Wow, what a greeting, eh?

0:43:040:43:07

I can't stop smiling, I've got cheekache now

0:43:070:43:10

from smiling so much, it was fantastic, totally emotional, really.

0:43:100:43:15

Feel a bit of a tear welling up, you know, they were so happy to see me.

0:43:150:43:19

-Back in Mania.

-Back in Mania.

0:43:190:43:21

After a long journey, it's time for Andy to turn in.

0:43:240:43:29

But night time is prime fishing time for the men of Mania village.

0:43:290:43:34

As dawn breaks, they're returning to the beach.

0:43:360:43:39

They've been at sea for six hours, but it's been worth it.

0:43:420:43:47

-Hey.

-Andy.

-Kaba.

0:43:470:43:51

Big fish. Yay!

0:43:510:43:55

Hey, how you doing, all right? Ishmael, all right?

0:43:570:44:01

Good catch. Oh, brilliant.

0:44:010:44:04

You're going to play with a beautiful woman?

0:44:080:44:10

That's too much information, really!

0:44:130:44:17

The last time I was here I think the best catch we had was 7 fish

0:44:210:44:25

so today they've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10,

0:44:250:44:30

they've got more than double.

0:44:300:44:32

Happy, happy, happy.

0:44:360:44:39

Don't ask me to carry it on my head, I'm not carrying it on my head.

0:44:410:44:45

No, no, no.

0:44:450:44:48

OK? Steady, yeah?

0:44:540:44:56

I'm not lazy! Stop saying I'm lazy, OK, I'm trying, all right?

0:44:580:45:01

Shush you!

0:45:030:45:05

And it looks like today's bumper catch is not a one off.

0:45:050:45:09

Since Andy's last visit, everything has changed.

0:45:090:45:13

No trawlers?

0:45:130:45:14

All gone?

0:45:160:45:18

-One and a half years, no trawlers?

-No trawlers.

0:45:230:45:25

Well, that's brilliant, fantastic.

0:45:250:45:28

And you're happy?

0:45:300:45:32

You're always happy. So, no trawlers, which is good.

0:45:320:45:35

-So you can now put nets out and you are safe and your nets are safe.

-Yes.

0:45:350:45:41

-And also there's more fish?

-More fish.

0:45:410:45:45

-Good fish? Lots of fish? Big fish?

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:45:450:45:48

Without the illegal trawlers stealing their catch,

0:45:480:45:52

the villagers are selling more fish than ever before.

0:45:520:45:55

Europe for your fish. Right, OK. So, it goes to Europe now, the fish?

0:46:040:46:08

Yes, yes.

0:46:080:46:10

Wow, someone in Spain or France is eating your fish

0:46:100:46:13

-that you caught in Africa.

-Yes.

0:46:130:46:15

-That's mad.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:46:150:46:18

So more fish, no problems with the trawlers,

0:46:180:46:21

-bigger price for your fish...

-Yes.

-No wonder you're smiling!

0:46:210:46:27

In the last 18 months, the whole of Sierra Leone

0:46:270:46:30

has experienced a revolution in its fishing industry.

0:46:300:46:34

The government here has finally woken up

0:46:350:46:37

to the damage caused by illegal trawling.

0:46:370:46:40

Now the five mile exclusion zone around this coast

0:46:420:46:45

is being vigorously enforced.

0:46:450:46:49

The Environmental Justice Foundation, EJF,

0:46:490:46:52

played a key role in this dramatic turnaround.

0:46:520:46:55

One of their workers, Amara Kalone, is a regular visitor

0:46:550:46:58

to Mania village, where he monitors the health of the fish stocks.

0:46:580:47:03

So did my trip here last time help?

0:47:110:47:14

That's fantastic.

0:47:340:47:36

EJF used Andy's programme to help persuade the government

0:47:370:47:41

to take action.

0:47:410:47:43

So, I've brought some stuff from England...

0:47:430:47:45

With the trawlers gone, the fish stocks here are now recovering.

0:47:450:47:49

Andy hopes the supplies he's brought

0:47:490:47:52

will help the villagers catch even more of them.

0:47:520:47:55

Some float on the surface and some dive.

0:47:550:47:58

It's OK.

0:48:080:48:09

But it's the children of the village that he really wants to help.

0:48:090:48:13

The kids, they just have nothing,

0:48:150:48:17

they're literally playing in the dirt and they have nothing.

0:48:170:48:20

More than 40% of the population of Sierra Leone is under 14

0:48:200:48:26

and education here is very basic.

0:48:260:48:29

Six months ago, Andy sent out a shipment of school equipment,

0:48:290:48:33

bought with the money he helped raise.

0:48:330:48:36

But it looks like some of it didn't turn up.

0:48:400:48:42

This is all that's arrived?

0:48:420:48:44

So, not much, then, really. There was lots, probably 20 boxes of stuff.

0:48:480:48:53

Musical instruments, sports equipment, rugby balls, footballs.

0:48:530:48:57

There was boxes and boxes of pencils that we sent.

0:48:570:49:00

-That's all you've got left. Material to make uniforms.

-Uniforms.

0:49:000:49:04

For the children, not here.

0:49:040:49:07

Not here.

0:49:090:49:10

The missing equipment for the children

0:49:100:49:12

was stolen from the port in Freetown.

0:49:120:49:15

These kids have literally nothing so, yeah, I'm a bit upset

0:49:150:49:20

that so little gear has arrived, it's such a shame.

0:49:200:49:24

It's just a sad situation, really, but we'll...

0:49:240:49:29

Andy's brought some more supplies with him from Cornwall.

0:49:330:49:37

Although I was bringing it anyway, it just makes it all the better,

0:49:370:49:40

it fills in what they haven't got.

0:49:400:49:42

-Some footballs. I've got a pump to pump these up, OK?

-OK.

0:49:420:49:46

And some different teams, OK?

0:49:460:49:50

Frisbees for catching and throwing. OK?

0:49:500:49:55

So, there's some of them. Yes, you've got it, yeah.

0:49:550:50:00

One simple football, you can see the pleasure they have out of one ball,

0:50:130:50:17

for the stuff they've got there that's hours of fun for them,

0:50:170:50:19

catching a ball, throwing a ball. Sport is supposed to be fun,

0:50:190:50:22

You can see what fun they're having. So glad I bought it. So glad.

0:50:220:50:26

It's Andy's last day in the village.

0:50:350:50:37

And there's one more thing he has to do.

0:50:370:50:41

GRUNTING

0:50:410:50:43

There may be more fish in the sea, but you still have to catch them

0:50:480:50:54

and that means paddling.

0:50:540:50:57

I'm pulling, I'm pulling.

0:51:000:51:02

I'm a knackered fisherman.

0:51:080:51:11

It's as bad as I remember.

0:51:110:51:14

Jesus, man, they don't stop, they just keep going and going

0:51:140:51:18

and I'm thinking, "I need a rest, just 30 seconds then we'll go again."

0:51:180:51:23

They just keep going, "Come on, Andy, come on, Andy."

0:51:230:51:27

Swim up the fish.

0:51:270:51:30

No fish. Come on, where are the fish?

0:51:300:51:34

Can't blame it on the trawlers today!

0:51:340:51:38

Good fish, big fish.

0:51:500:51:53

I'm glad we caught something, eh?

0:51:570:52:00

You'd be calling me a Jonah, "You're not coming again!"

0:52:000:52:05

That is it one, one fish.

0:52:050:52:08

Never mind, it's fishing.

0:52:080:52:11

# South Australia, I was born

0:52:110:52:13

# Haul away, heave away

0:52:130:52:15

# Bound for South Australia... #

0:52:150:52:18

One big one is better than none at all.

0:52:250:52:28

-We could have caught none.

-Yes.

0:52:280:52:31

-Ah, rice and fish.

-Yes.

0:52:400:52:42

That makes a change.

0:52:420:52:44

Eat.

0:52:440:52:46

I'm eating, I'm eating, I don't really want to eat the head.

0:52:460:52:50

You seem happier, you don't seem so vexed as you were before.

0:52:500:52:55

18 months since I last came

0:53:070:53:10

-there's a big change, the village has changed.

-Yes.

0:53:100:53:12

Zinc roofs.

0:53:140:53:17

-That all takes money, yes?

-Yes.

0:53:170:53:19

So you must be earning good money to be able to afford new houses

0:53:190:53:22

-with zinc roofs.

-Yes, yes.

-OK.

0:53:220:53:25

I'm happy, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm happy that you're happy.

0:53:250:53:31

I'm really pleased that you're catching more fish.

0:53:310:53:34

For a poor country that relies so heavily on fishing,

0:53:370:53:40

all the changes mean a significant boost to living standards.

0:53:400:53:45

There's one last reason for this transformation

0:53:450:53:49

and to find out more, Andy is heading back to the harbour

0:53:490:53:52

at Freetown with Kaba and Ishmael.

0:53:520:53:56

We have to go out on this now, yeah?

0:53:560:53:57

The last time they were here, illegal trawlers were operating openly.

0:53:570:54:02

All that has changed because the government of Sierra Leone

0:54:020:54:06

now has a secret weapon.

0:54:060:54:08

And it's come from an unlikely source.

0:54:080:54:12

-This boat came from England?

-England.

-Yes.

0:54:150:54:18

Yes, Fast, fast, good boat.

0:54:220:54:25

The government of the Isle Of Man

0:54:250:54:27

donated this Fisheries Protection Vessel

0:54:270:54:30

shortly after Andy's last visit.

0:54:300:54:33

In charge of the operation, is Victor Kargbo.

0:54:330:54:37

Has this Isle Of Man boat made a huge difference to you?

0:54:410:54:44

For a desperately poor country

0:55:120:55:15

even one small vessel can make all the difference.

0:55:150:55:18

Now, the Fisheries Protection Officers can stop and inspect

0:55:180:55:22

any fishing boat in their national waters.

0:55:220:55:24

They're going in opposite directions trying to run away from us now.

0:55:360:55:39

Victor decides to pursue one of the trawlers,

0:55:390:55:43

but it doesn't seem too keen on being inspected.

0:55:430:55:47

HORN BLARES

0:55:510:55:54

But even if the trawler did want to run, there would be no point.

0:55:540:55:58

The Isle Of Man is the fastest boat in these waters.

0:55:580:56:02

The government can impose fines of up to a million dollars

0:56:200:56:23

if vessels are in breach of the law.

0:56:230:56:26

-It's a big boat, yes?

-Big.

0:56:350:56:37

Slow down.

0:56:370:56:39

With the trawler coming to a halt, the soldiers can board.

0:56:390:56:42

Victor and the boarding team are searching for any signs of illegal fishing.

0:56:450:56:49

They're checking net sizes and the boat's paperwork

0:56:490:56:51

to see if they have the correct fishing licenses.

0:56:510:56:55

It couldn't be more different from the last time

0:56:550:56:57

Andy, Kaba and Ishmael were here.

0:56:570:57:00

Remember the last time we got near one of these in Freetown?

0:57:000:57:03

-Yes.

-We went around and they were throwing... Different this time, yes?

0:57:030:57:10

They're not going to throw stones, because we have guns.

0:57:100:57:14

Satisfied that everything's in order,

0:57:150:57:18

Victor gives it the all clear.

0:57:180:57:21

The whole system is working here for them now,

0:57:250:57:28

to see Kaba and Ishmael smiling and joking, happy with life

0:57:280:57:31

because they're catching more fish, it's fantastic.

0:57:310:57:34

I'm only a fisherman from Cornwall

0:57:340:57:36

to come out and make a programme and actually make a difference,

0:57:360:57:40

its very humbling, really...

0:57:400:57:44

it's surreal.

0:57:440:57:48

Next time, when London binman Wilbur Ramirez

0:57:480:57:52

swapped his truck for a handcart in Jakarta.

0:57:520:57:55

The sun here is boiling.

0:57:550:57:58

He found a city, drowning in its own waste.

0:57:580:58:01

And formed a deep friendship with his host, Imam Syaffi.

0:58:010:58:06

Now, he's going back on a mission to help his friend.
