child exploitation in Oxford. Police say there've been 20

:00:00.:00:08.

investigations connected to sexual abuse and grooming since

:00:09.:00:11.

the problem came to light in 2012. He was one of the country's

:00:12.:00:18.

most successful businessman. So how has Sir John Madejski lost

for mental health patients. Police and social workers in Oxford

have spoken to around 60 girls at risk of sexual exploitation

since they began their investigation A year ago seven men were jailed for

their role in a paedophile ring. Now police say they have carried out

:00:59.:01:03.

more than 20 criminal investigations which have disrupted the abuse

:01:04.:01:06.

of young people in the city. It was a case

:01:07.:01:09.

which shocked the country. Six underage girls sadistically

what's changed to help avoid I think the most important learning

for us as being actually listening to the young women and the girls

themselves, talking to them and their families and learning lessons

:01:45.:01:46.

from working with them. Since a special unit,

:02:24.:02:28.

a much better position now but where we consider they could have been

:02:29.:02:29.

victims. The men mainly came from the

:02:30.:02:33.

East Oxford area. I see divisions within ethnic

:02:34.:02:41.

communities. Where there should not be. And this is exacerbated the

:02:42.:02:48.

situation. I feel safer living in London and walking out at night than

:02:49.:02:52.

I do potentially yet coming back from a night out on my own.

:02:53.:02:53.

Despite ongoing work with pubs and hotels in Oxford to spot signs

:02:54.:02:59.

of grooming, some communities leaders think more can be done.

:03:00.:03:03.

I am hoping we will begin to have more joined up work with the county

:03:04.:03:08.

council, the police and the community. It is not happening at

:03:09.:03:12.

A serious case review to identify how such horrific abuse was allowed

:03:13.:03:17.

to take place and the failings of different authorities is due to

:03:18.:03:20.

Madejski, the owner of Reading Football Club and other companies

:03:21.:03:27.

in Oxfordshire and Berkshire has lost more than ?300 million

:03:28.:03:30.

in the last six years, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

:03:31.:03:33.

An investigation by BBC South has revealed that most

:03:34.:03:36.

Our business correspondent, Alastair Fee, has this exclusive report.

:03:37.:03:40.

He's rich and famous, a flamboyant character whose generous

:03:41.:03:42.

In business, he's regarded as shrewd and honest but behind the image

:03:43.:03:48.

these are tough times for Reading's most recognisable resident.

:03:49.:03:50.

Since he made his fortune in printing Sir John Madejski's

:03:51.:03:53.

Most notably, he became chairman of Reading Football Club in 1990.

:03:54.:03:57.

He spent around ?37 million on the stadium that bears

:03:58.:04:00.

his name and with it came a conference centre and hotel

:04:01.:04:03.

but as the UK economy went into decline so did Sir John's fortune.

:04:04.:04:17.

The majority of the companies he has a interesting had a negative net

:04:18.:04:25.

worth. They are worth less now than when he originally invested in them.

:04:26.:04:30.

He's built up a mixed portfolio containing hotels, a restaurant,

:04:31.:04:32.

We've looked at 21 companies that he has a share in.

:04:33.:04:37.

According to the last available set of accounts.

:04:38.:04:41.

His ventures have included the Sackville Property Group

:04:42.:04:43.

which recorded a ?10.8 million loss in the financial year ending March

:04:44.:04:47.

2012, there have been no accounts filed since.

:04:48.:04:49.

Reading football club which made a loss of ?2.3 million last year.

:04:50.:04:52.

And there's the Madejski hotel and conference centre

:04:53.:04:54.

which recently turned a corner returning a profit of ?378,000.

:04:55.:04:57.

At his height, the Sunday Times Rich List estimated

:04:58.:05:00.

Last year that figure had fallen by ?300m to ?100m.

:05:01.:05:04.

He is struggling to balance the books with his companies at the

:05:05.:05:08.

moment. He is quite honest about that.

:05:09.:05:16.

This site in Bicester helps explain where much

:05:17.:05:18.

In November 2012 Polestar took over Sir John Madejski's

:05:19.:05:22.

When it went under, it's estimated Sir John lost more than ?80 million

:05:23.:05:26.

It's not known how much Reading Football Club has cost him.

:05:27.:05:31.

He thought he'd found the perfect buyer in Russian Anton Zingarevich.

:05:32.:05:34.

It's now believed Sir John is effectively acting as a broker

:05:35.:05:38.

Speaking last month he said he was keen to leave

:05:39.:05:42.

The voracious cost of running a foot or club is absolutely immense and of

:05:43.:05:54.

course, we have people with that sort of money that are few and far

:05:55.:06:00.

between. It is critical that we find somebody. The search goes on.

:06:01.:06:05.

Hopes to return to the Premier League were recently dashed

:06:06.:06:07.

when the Royals failed to get into the play offs.

:06:08.:06:10.

For the fans the uncertainty over future ownership continues.

:06:11.:06:13.

He's still a very rich man but nothing like as comfortably

:06:14.:06:18.

If the commercial property market makes big gains that will help

:06:19.:06:22.

but ?300 million is still a lot to lose however wealthy you are.

:06:23.:06:25.

A court has heard that two teenagers were killed

:06:26.:06:28.

in an execution`style shooting in an alleyway in Milton Keynes.

:06:29.:06:31.

19`year`old Abdi Farah died instantly, and 18`year`old

:06:32.:06:33.

They were both shot in the head on the Fishermead estate in 2011.

:06:34.:06:38.

26`year`old Dutch national Brahim Hajji and 20`year`old

:06:39.:06:40.

Kenyan`born Ahmed Ahmed both deny two counts of murder.

:06:41.:06:42.

Cotswold Airport has been fined ?75,000 following the death

:06:43.:06:44.

Steve Mills died when a gas cylinder he was carrying exploded.

:06:45.:06:49.

The airport operator Kemble Air Services Ltd was found

:06:50.:06:52.

guilty of breaching health and safety regulations in March.

:06:53.:06:58.

Accident and Emergency and Surgical departments at the

:06:59.:07:00.

John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford are in need of improvement according

:07:01.:07:03.

It says the four hospitals within the Oxford University Trust are

:07:04.:07:07.

providing a good service but the John Radcliffe is often stretched to

:07:08.:07:11.

its limit, and a shortage of staff is leading to long waiting

:07:12.:07:14.

Katharine Da Costa joins me in the studio.

:07:15.:07:17.

So, Katharine, what are the key issues?

:07:18.:07:23.

Well, part of the problem is the cost of living here in Oxford.

:07:24.:07:26.

The hospital trust is one of the biggest in the country, employing

:07:27.:07:30.

They were inspected by the Care Quality Commission which has

:07:31.:07:34.

rated three ` the Nuffield Orthopaedic, the Churchill, and

:07:35.:07:36.

But action needs to be taken to improve the John Radcliffe.

:07:37.:07:43.

The care and compassion of doctors and nurses was praised

:07:44.:07:46.

But inspectors raised several concerns at the John Radcliffe.

:07:47.:07:52.

Staff shortages in maternity, surgical wards

:07:53.:07:54.

and operating theatres was having an impact on the quality of care.

:07:55.:07:58.

Combined with being full a lot of the time this meant long waiting

:07:59.:08:01.

times at A and cancelled operations.

:08:02.:08:06.

Long waits too in Outpatients with not enough appointments

:08:07.:08:08.

Oxfordshire's health watchdog's welcomed the many good comments in

:08:09.:08:15.

today's report but says the impact of cancellations is being felt.

:08:16.:08:18.

The Hospital Trust says it is already working with

:08:19.:08:27.

If you're somebody waiting for a hip operation and you get yourself ready

:08:28.:08:32.

to go in for that and you are told that it has been cancelled and been

:08:33.:08:35.

put back, it is above the anxiety and the additional pain that causes

:08:36.:08:37.

for people. The Hospital Trust says it is

:08:38.:08:41.

already working with the local authority

:08:42.:08:43.

and GPs to reduce pressure on A, it's reviewing all outpatient

:08:44.:08:46.

services and it's looking at ways to We have increased the staff in the

:08:47.:08:56.

trust by over 400 members with significant increases to the numbers

:08:57.:08:58.

of doctors and nurses in the last 12 months. We will do what is

:08:59.:09:01.

necessary. The CQC says

:09:02.:09:03.

while all four hospitals provide a safe and effective service,

:09:04.:09:06.

the staff shortages need to be So the hospital trust has

:09:07.:09:09.

a lot to be pleased about ` it's been found to be focussing

:09:10.:09:13.

on quality, innovation and care, but it can't be complacent, and

:09:14.:09:16.

resolving its long`held problems with recruiting and retaining staff

:09:17.:09:19.

won't happen overnight. An Oxfordshire man who suffered

:09:20.:09:21.

brain damage when he was a child is set to become the first

:09:22.:09:24.

person to complete an annual race Edward McDonaugh, from Bicester,

:09:25.:09:28.

will take part in This year the race has been made

:09:29.:09:32.

open to wheelchair users With a little help from his carer,

:09:33.:09:45.

Jonathan is getting ready for the race of his life. The 24`year`old

:09:46.:09:50.

was involved in a car accident when he was eight years old. He is

:09:51.:09:53.

raising money for the charity which helped him recover. When I arrived

:09:54.:10:02.

there, I was nearly dead. And when I left there, I was talking, walking.

:10:03.:10:17.

I had made so much progress. Edward is leaving the section. He was

:10:18.:10:22.

invited to take part by Sarah who has been running the event for 12

:10:23.:10:29.

years. People ask us if they can run with a wheelchair or a buggy and we

:10:30.:10:32.

have always said no because we have a delightful off`road section which

:10:33.:10:35.

goes off alongside the lake which the runners love. Instead of saying

:10:36.:10:41.

no, we thought we would say yes and put on a new route. A number of

:10:42.:10:45.

other charities will also be benefiting. Once this is out of the

:10:46.:10:51.

way, Edward has his eye on the London Marathon next year.

:10:52.:10:53.

I'll have the headlines at 8pm and a full bulletin at 10:25pm.

:10:54.:11:01.

Now more of today's stories with Sally Taylor.

:11:02.:11:26.

So how is money from Brussels spent locally?

:11:27.:11:29.

We've been looking at a cross`channel project that

:11:30.:11:31.

could help prevent coastal flooding that wouldn't be happening without

:11:32.:11:35.

Researchers are examining old paintings of the Isle of Wight to

:11:36.:11:38.

see how artists have captured the coastline over the last 200 years.

:11:39.:11:42.

It's hoped that by studying past changes, better flood plans

:11:43.:11:44.

Ed Sherry has been to meet the Hampshire charity

:11:45.:11:49.

This steel engraving by William Westall from 1838 is called

:11:50.:11:57.

Ventnor from a Hill above the Cove. Ignore the buildings

:11:58.:12:00.

and you can see how over 175 years the cliffs

:12:01.:12:08.

Where we are now is built on past changes, different climate change

:12:09.:12:18.

and different effects. The cash has come from the European development

:12:19.:12:25.

fund. Similar work is being done along northern France, in Belgium

:12:26.:12:27.

and in the Netherlands. We have tried to get the types we can assess

:12:28.:12:34.

and demonstrate the value of using these tools, covering all parts of

:12:35.:12:38.

the coastline in the southern North Sea and English Channel region. A

:12:39.:12:44.

database of paintings is being set up to allow coastal managers and

:12:45.:12:48.

engineers to see how the landscape is changing and help plan coastal

:12:49.:12:53.

development. The work is being led by the Hampshire `based Maritime

:12:54.:12:58.

trust and they have received over ?1 million of European funds. We

:12:59.:13:04.

survive on those funds and the European funds are very core to

:13:05.:13:09.

that. We have a lot of expertise in the UK. Expertise we can share with

:13:10.:13:13.

our European colleagues. The charity says the UK as a whole receives more

:13:14.:13:18.

money from Europe and it pays in. The funding helps to better

:13:19.:13:22.

understand a common European heritage.

:13:23.:13:27.

Money for that project comes from a huge pot.

:13:28.:13:30.

The EU budget for the next seven years has been

:13:31.:13:32.

The biggest amount of around a third will go on what's called "cohesion".

:13:33.:13:37.

That's funding for countries and regions that are economically

:13:38.:13:40.

For the first time the overall EU budget was cut

:13:41.:13:43.

The Greens voted against that, arguing for a freeze instead,

:13:44.:13:47.

because they were worried about the impact on overseas aid.

:13:48.:13:57.

We have a position as the number`1 on the planet. I think that carries

:13:58.:14:07.

a responsibility, help others. The result of the cut has been we are

:14:08.:14:10.

giving less money to people who need it. I didn't want that to happen. I

:14:11.:14:14.

didn't want people to go hungry. There are a number

:14:15.:14:19.

of smaller parties also on the European ballot paper, including the

:14:20.:14:21.

Socialist Party who have a full list They're campaigning

:14:22.:14:24.

for what they're calling To claim you can run this in the

:14:25.:14:42.

interests of the people, you cannot do that, it is based on

:14:43.:14:43.

exploitation. We'll be hearing more

:14:44.:14:48.

from the other parties in the run up There is a full list of European

:14:49.:14:50.

candidates on the BBC website. And on Friday we'll be looking at

:14:51.:14:55.

whether hotels across Europe should Hundreds of patients with severe

:14:56.:14:58.

depression and anxiety are being offered a new kind of treatment

:14:59.:15:10.

in Hampshire ` singing in a choir. It's hoped that communal singing

:15:11.:15:13.

will help improve About 400 patients will be offered

:15:14.:15:15.

the therapy, including young mums Our Health Correspondent,

:15:16.:15:18.

David Fenton reports. This is an unusual quiet because

:15:19.:15:33.

most of the people here cannot sing. Or think they can't. Some of the

:15:34.:15:38.

group have mental health problems and they are hoping this will help.

:15:39.:15:47.

We hope it when fits our patients by releasing some of their anxiety and

:15:48.:15:50.

distress, building up their confidence and giving them hope and

:15:51.:15:56.

a sense of purpose. Julie had severe depression and anxiety for three and

:15:57.:15:59.

anxiety for three and a half years. She has written poems about it will

:16:00.:16:04.

stop for three months she could not leave her bedroom, let alone the

:16:05.:16:09.

house. I thought I was going to faint, felt as though somebody was

:16:10.:16:13.

strangling me and felt instantly sick. It took over my life. Today,

:16:14.:16:19.

Julie has joined in the choir and they are getting into the flow and

:16:20.:16:23.

enjoying it. It gets rid of my agitation and anxiousness. It

:16:24.:16:32.

releases a lot of energy, surplus energy you have got. They have been

:16:33.:16:38.

practising for an hour and they are just about to start singing.

:16:39.:16:50.

The power of singing certainly makes you feel better. We have had some

:16:51.:17:08.

breaking news? Bournemouth fans might not want to hear about Lewis

:17:09.:17:13.

grab one. They have confirmed they have accepted a bid from Cardiff.

:17:14.:17:20.

The player only signed a new three and a half year contract in January

:17:21.:17:24.

after turning down a move to Brighton. He scored 22 goals in his

:17:25.:17:29.

first season in the championship. Cardiff have just dropped out of the

:17:30.:17:30.

Premier League. All of us sports fans are getting

:17:31.:17:36.

excited about the World Cup, but one family from Hampshire have

:17:37.:17:39.

a very special reason for being so. Connor Gardner has been picked to be

:17:40.:17:42.

a flag bearer for England's opening game of the World Cup in Brazil

:17:43.:17:46.

and all because he selflessly gave up some of his formative years to

:17:47.:17:49.

care for his mum. I've been to a charity in the

:17:50.:17:53.

New Forest today to find out more. Football dominates his life, but he

:17:54.:18:05.

is off to Brazil on the trip of a lifetime. I am a bit nervous, never

:18:06.:18:10.

been on a flight for this long. I said to him, you have been given the

:18:11.:18:14.

opportunity to be a flag bearer. But he did not leave me. It is this

:18:15.:18:21.

special bond that has brought this World Cup dream alive. His mum was

:18:22.:18:28.

diagnosed with MS a few years ago, and he has been taking care of her.

:18:29.:18:33.

I have stayed in and taken care of her. The honeypot children's charity

:18:34.:18:41.

was there to help him. I used to be lonely, I didn't go out because I

:18:42.:18:47.

wanted to help my mum. They have left to me to have free time. After

:18:48.:18:51.

four years attending their respite centre, it was the charity that

:18:52.:18:55.

nominated him for the prize. Who have you got your hopes up about

:18:56.:19:04.

meeting? Steven Gerrard. What do your friends think about this? They

:19:05.:19:09.

don't believe me. Swapping the tranquil of the New Forest for the

:19:10.:19:17.

exuberance of Brazil, is an experience he will never forget. He

:19:18.:19:20.

is excited, Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry

:19:21.:19:24.

says he thinks the change of England coaching staff is a key factor

:19:25.:19:25.

behind him being brought back Carberry was outspoken

:19:26.:19:29.

against the previous regime, criticising a lack of communication

:19:30.:19:32.

when he was dropped from the team. But after being recalled

:19:33.:19:33.

for the upcoming one`day and T20 series against Sri Lanka,

:19:34.:19:37.

he's delighted that all parties It was me expressing my opinion,

:19:38.:19:55.

which I am entitled to. We have had a chat since and the lines of

:19:56.:19:57.

communication have deemed better. I will be playing at the top of the

:19:58.:20:01.

order. It is one of the things they have been looking at and see how I

:20:02.:20:02.

go again Sri Lanka. Despite another week

:20:03.:20:09.

of rain`affected matches, both Surrey and Hampshire recorded wins

:20:10.:20:11.

in cricket's County Championship. A century from captain Graeme Smith

:20:12.:20:13.

led Surrey to a tricky`looking At Hove, plenty of rain and a very

:20:14.:20:17.

flat wicket meant a high`scoring Meanwhile, Hampshire is top

:20:18.:20:21.

of Division Two after completing a comfortable six`wicket win over

:20:22.:20:24.

Glamorgan at the Ageas Bowl. Bournemouth athlete, Steve Way,

:20:25.:20:28.

in Glasgow. A service of remembrance has been

:20:31.:20:36.

held for those who lost their lives when an American bomber crash

:20:37.:20:38.

landed on Chichester 70 years ago. The crew

:20:39.:20:43.

of the plane successfully bailed out but three civilians were killed,

:20:44.:20:44.

including a 14`year`old girl. Relatives of the bomber pilot

:20:45.:20:46.

travelled from the United States The beat 24 Liberator was capable of

:20:47.:21:06.

long distances and carrying heavy loads of bombs. Dozens set off

:21:07.:21:11.

across the Channel to one railway yards in central France. Enemy fire

:21:12.:21:15.

up the damage this plane and they aborted their mission. The pilots,

:21:16.:21:21.

Joseph Duncan nursed the plane towards the south coast but a fire

:21:22.:21:27.

broke out on board. It's got worse and got over land and told his crew

:21:28.:21:33.

to bail out. He turned the aeroplane back out to sea and then he left.

:21:34.:21:39.

All ten members of the crew survived but the plane did not crash over the

:21:40.:21:45.

sea. It's damaged engines turned it 180 degrees taking it inland. It

:21:46.:21:50.

crashed in the centre of Chichester on wartime allotments and a laundry

:21:51.:21:56.

filled with workers. I remember this massive ball of flame. It is a thing

:21:57.:22:01.

you never forget. I remember feeling the heat from the flames as well. I

:22:02.:22:06.

ran home and my mother was running to meet me. We thought it had been a

:22:07.:22:12.

bomb dropped. We heard later it had been a crash. There is a short act

:22:13.:22:19.

of remembrance... 70 years on, the events are remembered at the

:22:20.:22:22.

graveside of 14`year`old mate Granger who had been underway to see

:22:23.:22:29.

her mother. This man wrote a history of the crash and he tracked down the

:22:30.:22:35.

family of the pilot. His son came to represent his father, who is now 93.

:22:36.:22:41.

The British and Americans were great friends. They were allies. It is the

:22:42.:22:49.

tragedy of the war, I guess. He did what he could. It wasn't enough but

:22:50.:22:54.

yes, he went on to keep fighting. Keep the bad guys back.

:22:55.:23:05.

High pressure is in charge of the weather. We do have some lovely

weather pictures sent it. A stroll in the sunshine at Poole

:23:35.:23:35.

the sunshine. A touch of mist and fog and maybe at

:23:36.:23:53.

touch of frost. Most towns and cities I expect things seven to nine

:23:54.:23:56.

Celsius. In the countryside, perhaps down to five or 6 degrees. Winds are

:23:57.:24:02.

light and variable. Mist and fog to start tomorrow but that will earn

:24:03.:24:08.

away. Sunny spells initially but there will be more cloud than today,

:24:09.:24:13.

filling in from the North. Bright sunny spells for the afternoon and

:24:14.:24:19.

they hiked up to 19 Celsius. Today we reach 19 Celsius. Tomorrow we

:24:20.:24:28.

might have a high of 21 degrees. Through the course of tomorrow

:24:29.:24:33.

night, skies were clear again. Another mild night to come with a

:24:34.:24:38.

low of seven to 11 Celsius. Clear spells and the slight chance of mist

:24:39.:24:42.

and fog patches first thing on Friday morning. Once again the winds

:24:43.:24:49.

are fairly light. A lovely day on Friday. A contrast for tomorrow, 19

:24:50.:24:56.

Celsius today, a high of 21 Celsius. Temperatures are continuing

:24:57.:24:59.

to climb as we head towards the weekend. It is all thanks to this

:25:00.:25:07.

area of high pressure. 22 Celsius through Friday, perhaps up to 23 by

:25:08.:25:11.

Saturday. But there is this weather front moving south later on in the

:25:12.:25:15.

day on Saturday. May producing thundery downpours. If you are

planning a barbecue on Saturday, do be prepared we could have

:25:23.:25:25.

thunderstorms. If you do catch a shower on Saturday afternoon, they

:25:26.:25:28.

could be heavy and slow moving. Temperatures are set to climb into

:25:29.:25:34.

the low 20s at the weekend. Things change and a breakdown occurs later

:25:35.:25:41.

on Sunday. Can I let you into a little secret.
