Devon, the storm brought 40 millimetres of rain | :00:00. | :00:12.
Good evening. The storm has claimed the life of an elderly man. Bob | :00:13. | :00:18.
Thomas was 77. He died after being hit by a falling tree in his garden | :00:19. | :00:21.
near Caernarfon. Tonight the Met Office has issued a yellow "be | :00:22. | :00:24.
aware" warning for heavy rain and wind overnight and into tomorrow, | :00:25. | :00:28.
and more than 5,000 people are still without power. Roger Pinney reports. | :00:29. | :00:52.
And all it goes, more high winds, rain and snow and news about death | :00:53. | :00:59.
caused by Wednesday's storm. 77-year-old Bob Thomas was hurt when | :01:00. | :01:04.
a tree fell on him in the garden of his home in Caeathro. He died in | :01:05. | :01:07.
hospital where he was being treated for head injuries. It is very sad | :01:08. | :01:13.
that at the height of the storm on Wednesday, he was thinking of his | :01:14. | :01:16.
animals and making sure the chickens were safe. By comparison, the | :01:17. | :01:38.
problems other of us face pale away but they are problems nonetheless. | :01:39. | :01:41.
We caught up with a crew of power workers, and trying to reconnect | :01:42. | :01:44.
communities. This team has been working virtually around the clock, | :01:45. | :01:47.
finishing at 1am and starting again at 7am. Already the latest storm is | :01:48. | :01:50.
starting to set in. Who knows what problems the new storm will bring? | :01:51. | :01:53.
The work isn't easy and seems never-ending. The weather has been | :01:54. | :01:57.
horrendous. It is the worst I've ever known it and the conditions are | :01:58. | :02:01.
awful. We have been working 18 hour days and are doing our best to get | :02:02. | :02:13.
customers back on. Some hasty repairs to a roof elsewhere and at | :02:14. | :02:16.
the fire station they have a generator, but most are having to | :02:17. | :02:20.
manage without any power. In the village shop they are using a gas | :02:21. | :02:23.
lamp and torches. The freezers are having to remain closed. We have got | :02:24. | :02:29.
a call fire. And I have just bought a gas fire for the kitchen. I | :02:30. | :02:37.
sympathise with the elderly in the village because they have no gas or | :02:38. | :02:41.
electric at all and without that, they can't cook their food. And it | :02:42. | :02:45.
is concerned for an elderly neighbour which is bringing this | :02:46. | :02:49.
woman out with an urn of hot water for tea and coffee. Hello, Mary, I | :02:50. | :02:52.
have got some hot water to you. Yesterday she had no heating and was | :02:53. | :02:56.
snuggled up on the chair, covered in blankets. It was 12 degrees in her | :02:57. | :03:02.
house yesterday. It was absolutely freezing. The electricity here went | :03:03. | :03:07.
on Wednesday and more of it lost power in today's storm. And so, the | :03:08. | :03:13.
bad weather continues. This is the River Wye at Monmouth. Surely some | :03:14. | :03:30.
respite must be due. A review into storm damage in January and December | :03:31. | :03:33.
has found that less than 1% of properties here actually flooded. | :03:34. | :03:36.
But the report doesn't cover the storms we've had over the last two | :03:37. | :03:39.
weeks. Natural Resources Wales says most defences held - but repair work | :03:40. | :03:43.
is now needed at many of them. The defences did stop the worst of the | :03:44. | :03:46.
worst of the weather and pat them on properties and people but 175 | :03:47. | :03:49.
defences were damaged and need to be repaired. If we look to the future, | :03:50. | :03:53.
with the impact of climate change, we can expect more of the severe | :03:54. | :03:57.
weather happening again. There could have been 50,000 properties | :03:58. | :04:00.
affected. In reality, there were not. The impact is that we have been | :04:01. | :04:05.
able to invest and we will continue to invest in protection and defences | :04:06. | :04:11.
that will secure the future of our communities. Carmarthenshire | :04:12. | :04:18.
council's chief executive has stepped down while police | :04:19. | :04:20.
investigate payments to him, which the Wales Audit Office describe as | :04:21. | :04:23.
unlawful. Mark James recived cash payments instead of employer pension | :04:24. | :04:26.
contributions when he opted out of the staff scheme. Mr James says it's | :04:27. | :04:35.
right that he leaves office while police conclude their inquiries, but | :04:36. | :04:38.
says he hasn't done anything wrong. Pembrokeshire Council held a meeting | :04:39. | :04:41.
earlier to discuss a similar issue, involving its chief executive Bryn | :04:42. | :04:45.
Parry Jones, who remains in post. The leader of the Welsh | :04:46. | :04:47.
Conservatives faces a growing crisis over his leadership tonight. The | :04:48. | :04:52.
party's board have been holding emergency talks to discuss the | :04:53. | :04:55.
controversial sacking of four Tory Assembly Members. They were removed | :04:56. | :05:00.
from the front bench by Andrew RT Davies. It's understood a conference | :05:01. | :05:03.
call was arranged to allow members to express "concern and anger" at Mr | :05:04. | :05:12.
Davies' actions. Parents of pupils at a secondary school in Cardiff are | :05:13. | :05:15.
consulting solicitors after children were allegedly secretly filmed at a | :05:16. | :05:21.
toilet in their school. It follows guilty pleas to voyeurism by the | :05:22. | :05:24.
deputy headteacher at Ysgol Glantaf last month, involving a hidden | :05:25. | :05:28.
camera at another location. Further investigations led detectives to the | :05:29. | :05:33.
school. That's now prompted some parents to seek legal advice. Nick | :05:34. | :05:42.
Palit reports. On 31st of January, 47-year-old Gareth Williams of the | :05:43. | :05:45.
other car the magistrates court on three charges of 4 euros, involving | :05:46. | :05:51.
a camera hidden in a toilet. Police recovered the camera and memory | :05:52. | :05:57.
sticks with files of five children. The Welsh-medium deputy head pleaded | :05:58. | :06:00.
guilty to recording to another person without their consent, for | :06:01. | :06:03.
the purpose of sexual gratification. But those charges did not relate to | :06:04. | :06:07.
any offences at the school where he taught. Since then, Police have | :06:08. | :06:09.
widened their investigation to include Ysgol Glantaf. Sources have | :06:10. | :06:12.
told BBC Wales that teachers, parents and pupils have been spoken | :06:13. | :06:15.
to by police about alleged secret filming at the school. Now some | :06:16. | :06:18.
worried parents have been seeking legal advice. If it is found that | :06:19. | :06:28.
children have been filmed on school premises in the toilets, then there | :06:29. | :06:36.
was undoubtedly a claim for the children by their parents. There is | :06:37. | :06:42.
a breach of privacy. And the nature of the breach is obviously extremely | :06:43. | :06:49.
serious. Last week the headteacher wrote to parents of the 1000 500 | :06:50. | :06:54.
pupils to tell them that police officer been given full access to | :06:55. | :07:01.
the school to carry out their investigations He also acknowledged | :07:02. | :07:04.
that the situation was extremely concerning for everyone involved | :07:05. | :07:06.
with the school. Meanwhile Mr Williams has been suspended from his | :07:07. | :07:10.
post here and is due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court on the | :07:11. | :07:15.
21st of this month for sentencing. It's been described as the largest | :07:16. | :07:19.
fire on Borth Peat Bog for more than 20 years. Fire crews spent hours | :07:20. | :07:22.
trying to control the flames, which were burning close to the village | :07:23. | :07:26.
near Aberystwyth. Now the fire is out, investigators are looking for | :07:27. | :07:34.
the cause. A lorry driver has been fined more than ?300 with nine | :07:35. | :07:37.
points on his licence after his truck overturned on the Britannia | :07:38. | :07:40.
Bridge linking Anglesey with the mainland, at the height of | :07:41. | :07:43.
Wednesday's storm. The bridge was closed to lorries at the time. | :07:44. | :07:50.
Magistrates heard that Slovakian Igor Kolarik hit a van, causing 17 | :07:51. | :07:56.
hours of delays. The weather's been disrupting the weekend's rugby. | :07:57. | :07:59.
Tonight's Pro 12 match between the Dragons and Leinster went ahead in | :08:00. | :08:02.
Dublin. Despite a heroic battle, the Welsh side lost 31-19. The Scarlets | :08:03. | :08:06.
game against Ulster was called off because of a water-logged pitch in | :08:07. | :08:15.
Belfast. Let's get the weekend weather forecast now. Here's Sue | :08:16. | :08:21.
Charles. It has been a wet and wintry Valentine's Day and that | :08:22. | :08:24.
warning for heavy rain remains in place. Not as severe as Wednesday, | :08:25. | :08:29.
but gusts of 73 miles an hour at the Mumbles. We have a latest area of | :08:30. | :08:36.
low pressure, the third in the week, moving east across the UK. That rain | :08:37. | :08:40.
easing overnight as the font clears, but remaining windy. Reaching gale | :08:41. | :08:46.
force a long exposed coasts. Temperatures falling to between 5-7 | :08:47. | :08:50.
Celsius. Tomorrow, blustery showers on and off through the morning, | :08:51. | :08:55.
wintry in the hills, and a similar story across the UK. Showers falling | :08:56. | :09:03.
as low above 300 metres. The wind becoming cold as it becomes | :09:04. | :09:08.
north-westerly. Temperatures in the north-east of Scotland six Celsius, | :09:09. | :09:13.
and then in the south of England. Windy end to day across Wales, but | :09:14. | :09:18.
again, feeling chilly. We have a brief ridge of high pressure | :09:19. | :09:22.
building on Saturday into Sunday, so Sunday is settled before this next | :09:23. | :09:27.
front arrives. If Rusty, dry start, but clouding over from the West | :09:28. | :09:34.
later on. -- a frosty Dysart -- dry start. Improving into Monday itself, | :09:35. | :09:43.
and next week, it looks like the jet, which has been pushing storms | :09:44. | :09:48.
across the Atlantic, starts to move northwards, so it should settle down | :09:49. | :09:52.
and be less windy, with some longer dry spells as well. Thank goodness | :09:53. | :10:00.
for that. That's Wales Today. Thank you for watching. Have a great | :10:01. | :10:04.
weekend. From all of us on the programme, goodnight. | :10:05. | :10:07. |
