Kadeena night we will Tomorrow talk to one of | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to the programme. Tonight's headlines: | :00:00. | :00:00.
The Wales Football team at the launch | :00:00. | :00:00.
of Cardiff's Champions League Final, expected to bring tens of millions | :00:07. | :00:09.
The alarm was raised when a speedboat | :00:10. | :00:15.
And celebrating our landscape or ruining our scenery? | :00:16. | :00:23.
The epic stunt that's getting a mixed reaction. | :00:24. | :00:42.
Organisers claim it attracts the biggest global TV audience | :00:43. | :00:46.
for any annual sporting event, showcasing host cities | :00:47. | :00:50.
and their sporting facilities right across the world. | :00:51. | :00:54.
And this season, Cardiff will be in the limelight. | :00:55. | :00:58.
For the first time ever, the Champions League final | :00:59. | :01:00.
It will attract hundreds of thousands of people to the capital | :01:01. | :01:05.
and could bring tens of millions of pounds to the economy. | :01:06. | :01:09.
Cardiff 2017 has been launched tonight in the city centre. | :01:10. | :01:13.
Arriving tonight to lend their support to world football's | :01:14. | :01:18.
Wales' players arrived early for the special dinner. | :01:19. | :01:27.
Real Madrid's Gareth Bale won the Champions League last year. | :01:28. | :01:29.
He's hoping for a repeat in his home city next June. | :01:30. | :01:32.
It would be an amazing experience first and foremost. | :01:33. | :01:36.
Obviously I've played the Super Cup in Cardiff before | :01:37. | :01:38.
and it was an amazing experience to have my friends and family | :01:39. | :01:41.
So this year now it's a lot closer to my... | :01:42. | :01:45.
I suppose, if it can be closer to my heart. | :01:46. | :01:48.
So, yeah, I suppose it's a little bit more motivation | :01:49. | :01:50.
if there needs to be any more and, yeah, we'll be trying | :01:51. | :01:53.
Organisers say it's more than just one game. | :01:54. | :02:02.
Like in Milan last year, a week-long festival | :02:03. | :02:04.
will be held in June - a chance to see past stars play | :02:05. | :02:09.
in a five-aside tournament on the streets, get close | :02:10. | :02:12.
to the trophy in the Fan Zone, a concert's planned too, | :02:13. | :02:15.
but organisers haven't decided where in Cardiff the football | :02:16. | :02:18.
The women's final will also be held here, two days | :02:19. | :02:23.
It's vitally important that everything we do, | :02:24. | :02:27.
we're not doing this purely for the privilege of hosting this, | :02:28. | :02:30.
we're doing it for the benefit of Welsh football. | :02:31. | :02:33.
And my job is to make sure that we take these events | :02:34. | :02:36.
and we relaly harness the power of these events to ensure | :02:37. | :02:38.
that we achieve our objectives within our strategic plan. | :02:39. | :02:40.
Quicker, faster, more efficient than we would do otherwise. | :02:41. | :02:42.
And having the women's final will really help us promote, | :02:43. | :02:45.
develop and also protect the women's game here in Wales. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Cardiff got a taste of hosting a UEFA event | :02:50. | :02:52.
when Gareth Bale's Real Madrid won the Super Cup here two years ago. | :02:53. | :02:56.
While organisers say the Champion's League final is worth | :02:57. | :02:59.
an estimated ?45 million to the economy, others are cautious. | :03:00. | :03:05.
I think we expect far too much from these sports events. | :03:06. | :03:07.
I mean, there's no evidence that hosting sports events really impact | :03:08. | :03:10.
long-term on your economic prospects as a regional city | :03:11. | :03:12.
and if you think about it, even if it was 45 million, well, | :03:13. | :03:16.
Cardiff economy is probably 15 or 20 billion per annum, | :03:17. | :03:19.
so this is very small pebble in a large ocean. | :03:20. | :03:21.
We should just really enjoy it for what it is, which is a great | :03:22. | :03:25.
The number of fans and dignataries visiting is a real challenge. | :03:26. | :03:29.
Up to 200,000 fans are expected to descend on the city next June. | :03:30. | :03:34.
But with just 8400 hotel beds, most fully booked already, | :03:35. | :03:38.
many fans have been forced to look further afield and book hotels | :03:39. | :03:42.
right across south Wales and the south-weset of England. | :03:43. | :03:46.
A stone's throw away from the stadium and nearly every | :03:47. | :03:49.
room at this hotel was taken off the market two years ago. | :03:50. | :03:52.
UEFA needed assurances on accommodation before | :03:53. | :03:55.
Well, for us, attracting the Champion's League final to | :03:56. | :04:01.
Well, for us, attracting the Champions League final to | :04:02. | :04:03.
It's a great way to showcase Cardiff in over 200 nations. | :04:04. | :04:08.
So, for us, it was a no-brainer but to cooperate and to ensure that | :04:09. | :04:11.
So all of us as a group of hoteliers committed our rooms | :04:12. | :04:16.
Those hoping to market the Welsh capital say it's | :04:17. | :04:21.
Wales is the smallest country to host the final. | :04:22. | :04:38.
The single biggest sporting event of 2017. | :04:39. | :04:39.
A welder from Milford Haven has gone on trial accused | :04:40. | :04:43.
of murdering his ex-girlfriend at her flat in Haverfordwest. | :04:44. | :04:45.
27-year-old Natasha Bradbury died in February, after what's been | :04:46. | :04:47.
33-year-old Luke Jones denies murder. | :04:48. | :04:50.
The trial at Swansea Crown Court is expected to last two weeks. | :04:51. | :04:53.
A body has been found at Didcot power station following the partial | :04:54. | :04:56.
Three workers - including Christopher Huxtable from Swansea - | :04:57. | :05:01.
have been missing under the rubble for six months. | :05:02. | :05:05.
Thames Valley Police say their families have been informed. | :05:06. | :05:07.
The person has not yet been formally identified. | :05:08. | :05:12.
One of two men pulled from the sea close to Aberystwyth promenade | :05:13. | :05:15.
It's believed the men lost control of a speedboat which was spotted | :05:16. | :05:20.
circling in the water at around half past nine. | :05:21. | :05:23.
The rescue services were there in a matter of minutes | :05:24. | :05:25.
but the man died later in hospital. Here's Matt Murray. | :05:26. | :05:31.
When this boat was spotted circling in the sea close to Aberystwyth | :05:32. | :05:34.
seafront this morning, the emergency services | :05:35. | :05:35.
The town's lifeboat was launched and police, the ambulance service, | :05:36. | :05:40.
air ambulance and the coast guard were called to the scene. | :05:41. | :05:43.
The incident happened opposite the town's lifebaot | :05:44. | :05:46.
station and the RNLI were there in a matter of minutes. | :05:47. | :05:49.
They found a 16 foot vessel empty and soon found two men | :05:50. | :05:51.
We recovered one casualty from the water who indicated | :05:52. | :05:56.
that the other casualty was slightly further out to sea. | :05:57. | :05:59.
Proceeded to do some emergency first aid and return to station as quickly | :06:00. | :06:05.
as possible where we handed them over to the ambulance. | :06:06. | :06:08.
It's not the first tragedy on the Welsh coast this summer. | :06:09. | :06:12.
Earlier this month, two teenagers from Birmingham died | :06:13. | :06:14.
after being swept out to sea in Barmouth. | :06:15. | :06:17.
And on the same weekend, a 23-year-old man was caught | :06:18. | :06:19.
by waves while walking on rocks at Mwnt in Ceredigion. | :06:20. | :06:24.
It was incidents like these which saw the RNLI put extra teams | :06:25. | :06:27.
along the Welsh coast during the Bank Holiday weekend. | :06:28. | :06:30.
It has been a windy day here in Aberystwyth and the waters | :06:31. | :06:33.
Now, eye-witnesses have told me they saw this boat leave the harbour | :06:34. | :06:38.
at speed this morning before it was spotted out of control. | :06:39. | :06:42.
The RNLI rescued two men and carried out first aid | :06:43. | :06:45.
treatment on one of them, but he was later pronounced | :06:46. | :06:47.
David Jones is a fisherman in the harbour and saw what happened. | :06:48. | :06:53.
The boat was just going round in tight circles at quite | :06:54. | :06:56.
There hasn't been an accident of that sort for a long time | :06:57. | :07:04.
The RNLI regained control of the speedboat and it was taken | :07:05. | :07:09.
to Aberystwyth marina where they secured it on one | :07:10. | :07:11.
The other man is said to be in a stable condition | :07:12. | :07:16.
Dyfed-Powys Police said specialist officers are currently | :07:17. | :07:18.
A senior Welsh Labour MP has suggested that members of parliament | :07:19. | :07:26.
should be given an allowance instead of having to claim back expenses. | :07:27. | :07:31.
Paul Flynn - who's shadow Welsh Secretary and shadow Leader | :07:32. | :07:33.
of the House of Commons - says the current system has become | :07:34. | :07:36.
a time-consuming chore for MPs and their staff | :07:37. | :07:39.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority said | :07:40. | :07:44.
it was currently consulting on the rules. | :07:45. | :07:48.
The company behind Wylfa Newydd is asking for a specific clause | :07:49. | :07:51.
on the Welsh Language to be revised in Gwynedd and Anglesey's | :07:52. | :07:54.
The clause notes that councils can refuse proposals if they believe | :07:55. | :07:59.
it will cause significant damage to the community's language. | :08:00. | :08:03.
Horizon says it's too limiting as it currently stands, | :08:04. | :08:06.
and could endanger the Wylfa Newydd project. | :08:07. | :08:11.
Villagers in Maenclochog have voted to keep their public toilets, | :08:12. | :08:14.
which are popular with visitors to the Preseli Hills. | :08:15. | :08:17.
It follows an informal referendum held this month. | :08:18. | :08:20.
The votes were cast this evening and 93% percent | :08:21. | :08:23.
Their future and the cost of maintaining them will be | :08:24. | :08:28.
discussed at the next community council meeting. | :08:29. | :08:33.
A giant pop-up art installation is causing some controversy | :08:34. | :08:37.
Four huge mirrored letters spelling out EPIC have been placed | :08:38. | :08:42.
It's part of a campaign to promote tourism in Wales - | :08:43. | :08:48.
but some have called it tacky and a pointless waste of money. | :08:49. | :08:52.
Others though, say it's great idea as Nick Palit reports. | :08:53. | :08:58.
There can be few more beautiful spots in Wales than the stunning | :08:59. | :09:00.
Gower coastline of Rhossili and Worms Head. | :09:01. | :09:03.
The endless sweep of beach, the verdant greenery | :09:04. | :09:05.
Now that's true in a more literal sense. | :09:06. | :09:12.
Four metres high by 11 metres wide, this Epic installation | :09:13. | :09:15.
is in six different locations right across Wales. | :09:16. | :09:19.
It's part of a ?4 million campaign to promote tourism here. | :09:20. | :09:23.
It's also part of a social media campaign to be encouraged | :09:24. | :09:26.
This Epic has already been in four other locations across Wales | :09:27. | :09:33.
from Tintern in the east to the mountains of the north, | :09:34. | :09:36.
where the Snowdonia Society described it as an "epic fail" | :09:37. | :09:39.
Even here in Gower, some have reservations. | :09:40. | :09:44.
My reaction was that I thought it was tacky. | :09:45. | :09:46.
I still think that although other people obviously don't. | :09:47. | :09:52.
And I thought that in its situation near Worms Head, | :09:53. | :09:56.
which is an outstanding view of the natural beauty, | :09:57. | :10:00.
But it's only there for a short term and it has attracted a lot | :10:01. | :10:06.
of interest locally and further afield which is good for Gower. | :10:07. | :10:12.
It's all part of a campaign to promote tourism and the government | :10:13. | :10:15.
I think it's unfortunate that sometimes people take an alternative | :10:16. | :10:19.
view to what this is meant to be, which is a fun, | :10:20. | :10:22.
It's something of a conservative and snooty approach that | :10:23. | :10:27.
I think some have taken, but at the end of the day, | :10:28. | :10:30.
as long as it gets people looking at Wales, as long as it draws | :10:31. | :10:33.
attention to the magnificent natural environment that we have here, | :10:34. | :10:36.
those epic locations where the sign is, I think it's a positive thing. | :10:37. | :10:39.
Back at Worms Head, it's been drawing a crowd today. | :10:40. | :10:42.
Families enjoying the sunshine and a chance to pose | :10:43. | :10:44.
I think it's very clever and I think it's in a perfect situation. | :10:45. | :10:51.
It brings people down to a fantastic place anyway but it just sort | :10:52. | :10:57.
of advertises it a bit more for people. | :10:58. | :11:00.
By seeing it on there in the landscape as it's | :11:01. | :11:02.
there at the moment, it's just spot-on. | :11:03. | :11:04.
The installation is here on Gower until Sunday. | :11:05. | :11:07.
It'll then be dismantled and re-erected somewhere else. | :11:08. | :11:11.
The location of that sixth and final Epic Welsh landscape is a closely | :11:12. | :11:14.
How's it looking for the next few days, Benny? | :11:15. | :11:28.
It's looking deeper the first day of art tomorrow. We can look forward to | :11:29. | :11:35.
dry and bright weather. All change by Freddie and the weekend. Tonight, | :11:36. | :11:42.
starry skies and light winds. It will feel chilly in the clear skies | :11:43. | :11:49.
and mist and fog along the border. Tomorrow, we do have high pressure | :11:50. | :11:53.
to the south but also this weather fronts to the north-west. That will | :11:54. | :11:57.
bring more cloud, rain to parts of the north and west. First thing | :11:58. | :12:02.
tomorrow morning, it is a beautiful start to our day. Sunshine, cloud | :12:03. | :12:07.
will start to increase through the morning thanks to that where | :12:08. | :12:11.
different making the sunshine hazy. That weather front will bring some | :12:12. | :12:15.
rain to Northern Ireland and Scotland. The further south you are, | :12:16. | :12:19.
drier and brighter with the best in the sunshine. Here in Wales tomorrow | :12:20. | :12:26.
afternoon, we have some patchy rain across north Wales, which will push | :12:27. | :12:29.
to quickly and most of us getting away with a dry day. Top | :12:30. | :12:36.
temperatures 17 to 20 Celsius. The winds light and moderate from a | :12:37. | :12:39.
south-westerly direction. Workload arraigned tomorrow night compared to | :12:40. | :12:43.
tonight and some patchy rain pushing into part of the north and west. The | :12:44. | :12:50.
wind is picking up as well as we head into the early hours of Friday | :12:51. | :12:57.
morning. Friday is wet and windy. By the afternoon, the rainbow clear and | :12:58. | :13:00.
it will start to brighten up the part of the north and west. Feeling | :13:01. | :13:07.
fresher. Limited brightness by the end of the day. Saturday will be dry | :13:08. | :13:12.
with some brightness but quite quickly rain spreading from the | :13:13. | :13:17.
north-west. Strong winds to go with it. Not a day to be out and about. | :13:18. | :13:20.
Sunday is looking slightly better. That is Wales Today. | :13:21. | :13:24.
From all of us here, good night. | :13:25. | :13:33. |
