Organisers claim it attracts the biggest global TV audience

for any annual sporting event, showcasing host cities

and their sporting facilities right across the world.

And this season, Cardiff will be in the limelight.

For the first time ever, the Champions League final

It will attract hundreds of thousands of people to the capital

and could bring tens of millions of pounds to the economy.

Cardiff 2017 has been launched tonight in the city centre.

Arriving tonight to lend their support to world football's

Wales' players arrived early for the special dinner.

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale won the Champions League last year.

He's hoping for a repeat in his home city next June.

It would be an amazing experience first and foremost.

Obviously I've played the Super Cup in Cardiff before

and it was an amazing experience to have my friends and family

So this year now it's a lot closer to my...

So, yeah, I suppose it's a little bit more motivation

if there needs to be any more and, yeah, we'll be trying

Organisers say it's more than just one game.

Like in Milan last year, a week-long festival

will be held in June - a chance to see past stars play

in a five-aside tournament on the streets, get close

to the trophy in the Fan Zone, a concert's planned too,

but organisers haven't decided where in Cardiff the football

The women's final will also be held here, two days

It's vitally important that everything we do,

we're not doing this purely for the privilege of hosting this,

we're doing it for the benefit of Welsh football.

And my job is to make sure that we take these events

and we relaly harness the power of these events to ensure

that we achieve our objectives within our strategic plan.

Quicker, faster, more efficient than we would do otherwise.

And having the women's final will really help us promote,

develop and also protect the women's game here in Wales.

Cardiff got a taste of hosting a UEFA event

when Gareth Bale's Real Madrid won the Super Cup here two years ago.

While organisers say the Champion's League final is worth

an estimated ?45 million to the economy, others are cautious.

I think we expect far too much from these sports events.

I mean, there's no evidence that hosting sports events really impact

long-term on your economic prospects as a regional city

and if you think about it, even if it was 45 million, well,

Cardiff economy is probably 15 or 20 billion per annum,

so this is very small pebble in a large ocean.

We should just really enjoy it for what it is, which is a great

The number of fans and dignataries visiting is a real challenge.

Up to 200,000 fans are expected to descend on the city next June.

But with just 8400 hotel beds, most fully booked already,

many fans have been forced to look further afield and book hotels

right across south Wales and the south-weset of England.

A welder from Milford Haven has gone on trial accused

of murdering his ex-girlfriend at her flat in Haverfordwest.

A body has been found at Didcot power station following the partial

One of two men pulled from the sea close to Aberystwyth promenade

It's believed the men lost control of a speedboat which was spotted

circling in the water at around half past nine.

The rescue services were there in a matter of minutes

but the man died later in hospital. Here's Matt Murray.

When this boat was spotted circling in the sea close to Aberystwyth

The town's lifeboat was launched and police, the ambulance service,

air ambulance and the coast guard were called to the scene.

The incident happened opposite the town's lifebaot

station and the RNLI were there in a matter of minutes.

They found a 16 foot vessel empty and soon found two men

We recovered one casualty from the water who indicated

that the other casualty was slightly further out to sea.

Proceeded to do some emergency first aid and return to station as quickly

as possible where we handed them over to the ambulance.

It's not the first tragedy on the Welsh coast this summer.

Earlier this month, two teenagers from Birmingham died

after being swept out to sea in Barmouth.

And on the same weekend, a 23-year-old man was caught

by waves while walking on rocks at Mwnt in Ceredigion.

It was incidents like these which saw the RNLI put extra teams

along the Welsh coast during the Bank Holiday weekend.

It has been a windy day here in Aberystwyth and the waters

Now, eye-witnesses have told me they saw this boat leave the harbour

at speed this morning before it was spotted out of control.

The RNLI rescued two men and carried out first aid

treatment on one of them, but he was later pronounced

A senior Welsh Labour MP has suggested that members of parliament

should be given an allowance instead of having to claim back expenses.

Paul Flynn - who's shadow Welsh Secretary and shadow Leader

of the House of Commons - says the current system has become

a time-consuming chore for MPs and their staff

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority said

it was currently consulting on the rules.

The company behind Wylfa Newydd is asking for a specific clause

on the Welsh Language to be revised in Gwynedd and Anglesey's

The clause notes that councils can refuse proposals if they believe

it will cause significant damage to the community's language.

Horizon says it's too limiting as it currently stands,

and could endanger the Wylfa Newydd project.

Villagers in Maenclochog have voted to keep their public toilets,

which are popular with visitors to the Preseli Hills.

It follows an informal referendum held this month.

The votes were cast this evening and 93% percent

A giant pop-up art installation is causing some controversy

Four huge mirrored letters spelling out EPIC have been placed

It's part of a campaign to promote tourism in Wales -

but some have called it tacky and a pointless waste of money.

Others though, say it's great idea as Nick Palit reports.

There can be few more beautiful spots in Wales than the stunning

Gower coastline of Rhossili and Worms Head.

The endless sweep of beach, the verdant greenery

Now that's true in a more literal sense.

Four metres high by 11 metres wide, this Epic installation

is in six different locations right across Wales.

It's part of a ?4 million campaign to promote tourism here.

It's also part of a social media campaign to be encouraged

This Epic has already been in four other locations across Wales

from Tintern in the east to the mountains of the north,

where the Snowdonia Society described it as an "epic fail"

Even here in Gower, some have reservations.

My reaction was that I thought it was tacky.

I still think that although other people obviously don't.

And I thought that in its situation near Worms Head,

which is an outstanding view of the natural beauty,

But it's only there for a short term and it has attracted a lot

of interest locally and further afield which is good for Gower.

It's all part of a campaign to promote tourism and the government

I think it's unfortunate that sometimes people take an alternative

view to what this is meant to be, which is a fun,

It's something of a conservative and snooty approach that

I think some have taken, but at the end of the day,

as long as it gets people looking at Wales, as long as it draws

attention to the magnificent natural environment that we have here,

those epic locations where the sign is, I think it's a positive thing.

Back at Worms Head, it's been drawing a crowd today.

It brings people down to a fantastic place anyway but it just sort

of advertises it a bit more for people.

It's looking deeper the first day of art tomorrow. We can look forward to

and mist and fog along the border. Tomorrow, we do have high pressure

to the south but also this weather fronts to the north-west. That will

bring more cloud, rain to parts of the north and west. First thing

tomorrow morning, it is a beautiful start to our day. Sunshine, cloud

will start to increase through the morning thanks to that where

different making the sunshine hazy. That weather front will bring some

rain to Northern Ireland and Scotland. The further south you are,

drier and brighter with the best in the sunshine. Here in Wales tomorrow

afternoon, we have some patchy rain across north Wales, which will push

to quickly and most of us getting away with a dry day. Top

temperatures 17 to 20 Celsius. The winds light and moderate from a

south-westerly direction. Workload arraigned tomorrow night compared to

tonight and some patchy rain pushing into part of the north and west. The

wind is picking up as well as we head into the early hours of Friday

morning. Friday is wet and windy. By the afternoon, the rainbow clear and

it will start to brighten up the part of the north and west. Feeling

fresher. Limited brightness by the end of the day. Saturday will be dry

with some brightness but quite quickly rain spreading from the

north-west. Strong winds to go with it. Not a day to be out and about.
