29 and 30, I just couldn't believe what we were hearing. | :00:29. | :00:30.
Just three months before the Island Games, | :00:31. | :00:36.
there's a mass walk-out in Jersey women's football. | :00:37. | :00:48.
A woman from Jersey whose husband died from a brain tumour | :00:49. | :00:52.
less than a year after their wedding wants to raise awareness | :00:53. | :00:55.
of the disease so other families don't have to go | :00:56. | :00:57.

Justin had to cut short their honeymoon so he could get | :01:02. | :01:04.
Jessica Banham has their story, which you may find upsetting. | :01:05. | :01:07.

A keen sportsman, Justin often split his time between the boxing | :01:11. | :01:13.
But one night during the couple's honeymoon in France in the summer | :01:14. | :01:19.
of 2015, he no longer recognised his new wife. | :01:20. | :01:21.
Returning home to St Helier, he was diagnosed with | :01:22. | :01:23.
we both had careers, we had our lovely | :01:24. | :01:31.
We just thought we're a really lucky couple to have found this together, | :01:32. | :01:36.
and then just to have that bolt out of the blue, terminal cancer | :01:37. | :01:40.
just couldn't believe what we were hearing. | :01:41. | :01:48.
Brain tumours kill more adults under 40 in the UK | :01:49. | :01:50.
Here in Jersey, the most recent statistics show that almost 200 | :01:51. | :01:55.
people were seen for brain tumours at the General Hospital | :01:56. | :01:58.
But once diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, just 14% of adults | :01:59. | :02:08.
The impact of brain tumours are very significant, | :02:09. | :02:15.
and they're very difficult to treat because surgically there's always | :02:16. | :02:22.
a potential risk that you will damage the brain | :02:23. | :02:24.
For Justin, despite successful surgery his tumour grew back, | :02:25. | :02:27.
and he was given just two weeks to live. | :02:28. | :02:29.
He managed to survive for a further ten months, until his family | :02:30. | :02:32.
At the time Mia had developed chicken pox, and wasn't | :02:33. | :02:37.
allowed into the hospice where he was staying. | :02:38. | :02:40.
They came into us and said, he is hanging on for | :02:41. | :02:42.
And it was brother said, because he has not seen | :02:43. | :02:59.
Mia for two days, maybe he wants to see her. | :03:00. | :03:02.
That's the worst part about this whole story. | :03:03. | :03:06.
So the nurses said, you know, it's a one off, | :03:07. | :03:12.
if we bring Mia up, we'll bring her straight into Justin's | :03:13. | :03:15.
room and let her have some final time with him. | :03:16. | :03:17.
Emma believes further research into brain tumours is vital - | :03:18. | :03:19.
there have been few developments in how to treat them | :03:20. | :03:22.
And ultimately she hopes that by telling Justin's story, | :03:23. | :03:25.
she might be able to prevent other families from going through | :03:26. | :03:28.
Jersey spends far less on funding university students than many places | :03:29. | :03:39.
in the rest of the world, according to a new report | :03:40. | :03:42.
The group says it's essential that the States considers | :03:43. | :03:46.
Earlier I spoke to our reporter Julie Flanagan, who's been | :03:47. | :03:50.
This isn't a new problem and assemblies haven't been able to find | :03:51. | :04:04.
a solution. Deputy Macon has been leading this review into the cost of | :04:05. | :04:10.
funding for higher education and he said that even the maximum state 's | :04:11. | :04:14.
grant doesn't go anywhere near far enough to cover the cost of getting | :04:15. | :04:17.
a degree. He told me he has spoken a degree. He told me he has spoken | :04:18. | :04:21.
to some families and they have said they are having to spend money that | :04:22. | :04:24.
they have saved for their pensions and even selling the family home to | :04:25. | :04:29.
send their children to university. But he believes that the benefits of | :04:30. | :04:32.
getting a degree are enormous long-term for the island. | :04:33. | :04:34.
I think the evidence shows that if we want to support local | :04:35. | :04:38.
businesses and we want our students to reach the | :04:39. | :04:41.
top of their profession, and we want to address the concerns over | :04:42. | :04:44.
population growth, we have to be able to support our students into | :04:45. | :04:46.
The States I tried to cut spending, not increase it? Jersey spent about | :04:47. | :05:00.
a quarter of 1% of its GDP on higher education. If you compare that to | :05:01. | :05:06.
countries like Latvia which spent four times as much as jersey and | :05:07. | :05:09.
Northway which spends ten times as much as jersey, the Education | :05:10. | :05:15.
Scrutiny Panel have said many families and students want to see | :05:16. | :05:18.
some form of loan scheme. Deputy Macon says that the Treasury and | :05:19. | :05:22.
education ministers just haven't been taking this problem seriously | :05:23. | :05:26.
and have not done enough to resolve it. But the Assistant Education | :05:27. | :05:30.
Minister Deputy Anne Pryke thinks that is unfair. | :05:31. | :05:32.
We will look at the findings and report accordingly, | :05:33. | :05:33.
but I think they didn't come up with really long standing | :05:34. | :05:36.
and sustainable funding, because it can cost, we | :05:37. | :05:40.
Deputy Macon says that a subcommittee that has been set up by | :05:41. | :06:02.
the Chief Minister to look at funding for third level education | :06:03. | :06:04.
needs to set a deadline and publish its terms of reference so that | :06:05. | :06:08.
people can understand what it hopes to achieve. | :06:09. | :06:09.
That was our reporter Julie Flanagan talking to me earlier. | :06:10. | :06:12.
In other news, the father of the murdered Guernsey woman | :06:13. | :06:14.
Sarah Groves says he's spoken to the man accused of | :06:15. | :06:17.
The 23-year-old was stabbed to death in Kashmir in 2013. | :06:18. | :06:20.
Her family fear they may never get justice after 90 court hearings | :06:21. | :06:23.
But her father today revealed he's talked on the phone | :06:24. | :06:27.
to her alleged killer, Dutch national Richard de Wit. | :06:28. | :06:34.
He said the details of their conversation can't be shared, | :06:35. | :06:36.
but described the call as "unsatisfactory". | :06:37. | :06:38.
Jersey's women's football manager - and the rest of his coaching team - | :06:39. | :06:41.
have resigned, saying their positions have | :06:42. | :06:43.
It's a major blow to the team who are hoping to retain | :06:44. | :06:47.
their Island Games gold medal this summer. | :06:48. | :06:48.
For many, Jersey's women's gold was the defining moment | :06:49. | :06:54.
The women's game in the island at its highest - | :06:55. | :07:02.
but now at a real low, as the manager that day, | :07:03. | :07:04.
Simon Petulla, and the rest of his senior coaching team, | :07:05. | :07:07.
have stepped down after a falling out with JFA bosses. | :07:08. | :07:18.
As a management team, we have resigned. | :07:19. | :07:20.
We're not getting the support we think we deserve. | :07:21. | :07:22.
I'm devastated, but it's something we think we have | :07:23. | :07:25.
His decision comes a week after his wife Kerry quit | :07:26. | :07:28.
as JFA vice-president, and follows the controversial | :07:29. | :07:30.
cancellation of the women's Muratti against rivals Guernsey. | :07:31. | :07:34.
He feels the Jersey FA should have tried | :07:35. | :07:36.
This would not have happened if it was in the men's game. | :07:37. | :07:46.
There's only been 20 or so Murattis for women | :07:47. | :07:48.
and you can't lose the Muratti, you have to fight for it. | :07:49. | :07:52.
So, with exactly 100 days to go until the Island Games, | :07:53. | :07:57.
another blow to women's football in the Channel Islands. | :07:58. | :08:01.
And with a friendly against the Navy just two days away, the Jersey FA | :08:02. | :08:05.
will have to act quickly to find a new manager. | :08:06. | :08:12.
They have appointed new local coaches. | :08:13. | :08:14.
The Jersey FA have said they are disappointed | :08:15. | :08:17.
with Simon's decision, and thank him for his enthusiasm and commitment. | :08:18. | :08:20.
But women's football is seemingly in a mess in the islands - | :08:21. | :08:24.
you have to wonder who would want the hassle of taking on the job. | :08:25. | :08:28.
Tim Pryor, BBC Channel Islands News, Jersey. | :08:29. | :08:31.
And Tim Pryor will be your host next Tuesday at midday | :08:32. | :08:34.
on BBC Radio Jersey and BBC Radio Guernsey to debate | :08:35. | :08:36.
the future of women's football in the islands. | :08:37. | :08:39.
In rugby, Jersey Reds James Freeman - who's captained the team | :08:40. | :08:42.
for much of this season - is joining Premiership | :08:43. | :08:44.
Freeman, seen here wearing number six in the black scrum cap, | :08:45. | :08:48.
has signed a two-year deal with Exeter from next season. | :08:49. | :08:54.
Now let's get your weather forecast - here's David. | :08:55. | :09:01.
Good evening. All this week we have been plagued with this seems like | :09:02. | :09:07.
this, the file can be mist. The sunshine trying to get through. Over | :09:08. | :09:12.
the next 24 hours, we will see a bit of a change. Much brighter tomorrow, | :09:13. | :09:17.
some sunshine in the morning, much better visibility. It will cloud | :09:18. | :09:20.
over and ten breezy later with the risk of some patchy rain overnight | :09:21. | :09:24.
and into the start of the weekend. What is happening at the moment is | :09:25. | :09:30.
we have got to change brought about by a cold weather front that is | :09:31. | :09:33.
nudging towards us this evening and do the night to come. It takes its | :09:34. | :09:36.
time but eventually it should collate that want to go through, | :09:37. | :09:39.
much better visibility, a breeze, largely find the tomorrow. The | :09:40. | :09:42.
of an area of high pressure on the of an area of high pressure on the | :09:43. | :09:45.
weekend, all the crap that is running around the top of the area | :09:46. | :09:50.
of high pressure keeps us rather grey and rather cloudy for much of | :09:51. | :09:54.
the weekend ahead. This was much earlier today, the clearance moves | :09:55. | :09:58.
through the south-west of England. It is moving towards us, later on | :09:59. | :10:02.
this evening, we will see the guy is clear. Into the small hours of the | :10:03. | :10:06.
morning, we will see the temperatures glowing then they have | :10:07. | :10:11.
been. Six to seven Celsius. A brisk north-westerly wind. A largely fine | :10:12. | :10:16.
day to enjoy tomorrow with a good deal of sunshine in the morning, a | :10:17. | :10:20.
brisk north or north-westerly wind and quite a cool feel to the ad. 10 | :10:21. | :10:26.
Celsius. Some want across parts of Spain and Portugal, here we will see | :10:27. | :10:31.
a change across the next 24 hours or so that cold front sweeps through. | :10:32. | :10:35.
As we head into the weekend, the area of high pressure not quite | :10:36. | :10:38.
close enough. Not a huge amount of wet weather on and Sunday but rather | :10:39. | :10:43.
a lot of cloud on both days. That is all from me. Have a good night. | :10:44. | :10:46.
That's all from BBC Channel Islands News for now. | :10:47. | :10:52.
You can catch up on anything you have mist online. | :10:53. | :10:57.
I'll be back with you again tomorrow evening at half six here on BBC One. | :10:58. | :11:00.
there will be rain around, most occurring overnight. | :11:01. | :11:07.
Good evening, quite a range of whether an offer earlier today in | :11:08. | :11:12.
the north and north-west of the UK quite a lot of showers around, | :11:13. | :11:16.
lively ones, little bit of sunshine in between. The best of the sunshine | :11:17. | :11:19.
to be found at the other end of the country towards the south-east in | :11:20. | :11:23.
Kent, lovely picture here from one of our weather watchers. A range of | :11:24. | :11:27.
temperatures, too. 17 degrees for a few, on the other side of the | :11:28. | :11:31.
weather front, only seven or 8 degrees. Showers in the north and | :11:32. | :11:34.
west. The fresh air will win out over tonight coming in behind the | :11:35. | :11:38.
cold front, which isn't bringing much rain but it will bring some, | :11:39. | :11:42.
clearing away towards the continent, cold air following behind, as do the | :11:43. | :11:45.
showers. Wintry weather over | :11:46. | :11:46. |
