And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Anne Davies. | :00:13. | :00:15.
First tonight, Sherwood Forest could become the latest battleground | :00:16. | :00:19.
Documents obtained by Friends of the Earth show that a chemical | :00:20. | :00:26.
company wants to carry out seismic surveys for shale gas, | :00:27. | :00:28.
and those tests could be within two hundred metres of the Major Oak. | :00:29. | :00:31.
Here's Quentin Rayner to tell us more. | :00:32. | :00:35.
These plans are being revealed through a freedom of | :00:36. | :00:37.
information request by Friends of the Earth. | :00:38. | :00:41.
They show that the chemical company Ineos Shale appears | :00:42. | :00:44.
with the Forestry Commission to carry out seismic surveys | :00:45. | :00:48.
in Sherwood Forest and other licensed sites in the East Midlands. | :00:49. | :00:53.
The survey would involved putting charges in the ground to establish | :00:54. | :00:56.
if there is any gas in the rock underneath, which might be extracted | :00:57. | :00:59.
These tests could take place within 200 metres of the Forest's | :01:00. | :01:06.
most famous attraction, the 1000 Major Oak tree. | :01:07. | :01:11.
Ineos Shale insists it is not fracking in Sherwood Forest and | :01:12. | :01:13.
accuses Friends of the Earth of unnecessarily alarming | :01:14. | :01:15.
information it has received from the | :01:16. | :01:18.
One of its directors recently told us what is involved | :01:19. | :01:21.
with the seismic surveys in licensed areas in the East Midlands, | :01:22. | :01:27.
What we would do is undertake the survey | :01:28. | :01:31.
work then marry the survey work with vertical cord wells, | :01:32. | :01:37.
not fracked but simply samples of the geology, looking at | :01:38. | :01:40.
the depths, the characteristics, the pressures, the content and then | :01:41. | :01:44.
we would use that information to form our conversation with the | :01:45. | :01:47.
communities, the regulator, with the planning | :01:48. | :01:48.
authorities to take on to a | :01:49. | :01:50.
Now, the country park is a site of special scientific interest | :01:51. | :02:00.
as well as a special area of conservation. | :02:01. | :02:02.
Friends of the Earth feel the seismic surveys alone | :02:03. | :02:04.
could damage the ancient woodland and its wildlife. | :02:05. | :02:11.
Local anti-fracking groups fear that if fracking takes place, | :02:12. | :02:14.
it could lead the the decimation of the forrest, | :02:15. | :02:20.
increase the number of earthquakes in the surrounding area, | :02:21. | :02:22.
disrupt the water table and worsen traffic levels. | :02:23. | :02:24.
They plan to make it a rallying point by generating an | :02:25. | :02:26.
international campaign opposing the plans, starting this | :02:27. | :02:30.
Police are appealing for information after more than 60 cars were damaged | :02:31. | :02:35.
in the early hours of yesterday morning across Leicestershire. | :02:36. | :02:37.
People reported slashed tyres and smashed windscreens | :02:38. | :02:39.
Waltham on the Wolds is a relatively quiet village | :02:40. | :02:55.
and that is one of the reasons why so | :02:56. | :02:57.
many people have been so shocked by what has been described as the | :02:58. | :03:00.
mindless destruction that took place here in the early hours of | :03:01. | :03:03.
A woman I spoke to said she stepped out of her house and | :03:04. | :03:07.
encountered ten cars damaged on this street alone. | :03:08. | :03:10.
More than 60 cars had their windows or tyres slashed | :03:11. | :03:13.
However, nothing appears to have been stolen. | :03:14. | :03:26.
We spoke to a couple earlier who had only had their car for | :03:27. | :03:30.
a week before its window was slashed. | :03:31. | :03:31.
Do they wake up one morning and say, yes, I fancy smashing some | :03:32. | :03:42.
My front tyre has just been replaced about one month ago. | :03:43. | :03:53.
It's brand-new and already I'm going to have to replace | :03:54. | :04:00.
that just because some people wanted to vandalise my car for no reason. | :04:01. | :04:03.
The police had told us that no arrests have been made so far | :04:04. | :04:06.
however a black car was found abandoned | :04:07. | :04:08.
yesterday afternoon in | :04:09. | :04:09.
They are asking anybody with any information | :04:10. | :04:14.
about these incidents to | :04:15. | :04:15.
come forward and contact them on 101. | :04:16. | :04:22.
A film warning about the dangers of online grooming has been viewed | :04:23. | :04:25.
more than a quarter of a million times since it was published | :04:26. | :04:28.
Kayleigh's Love Story depicts the last few days Leicestershire | :04:29. | :04:32.
She was groomed, raped, and murdered last November | :04:33. | :04:37.
The film, which has won national awards, was posted | :04:38. | :04:42.
on Leicestershire Police's website and facebook page at | :04:43. | :04:44.
Rescuers say a couple forced to spend a night in the Cairngorms | :04:45. | :04:51.
Bob and Cathy Elmer from Leicestershire were caught out | :04:52. | :04:56.
when a planned hillwalk took longer than expected. | :04:57. | :04:58.
They sheltered with their dog in survival bags in whiteout | :04:59. | :05:01.
conditions before being found by a mountain rescue team. | :05:02. | :05:03.
This was the moment members of the Cairngorms rescue team came across | :05:04. | :05:21.
the couple on a snow laden plateau. The pair had been hill walking in | :05:22. | :05:26.
Scotland for 25 years but the admit despite their experience and | :05:27. | :05:27.
equipment, they were unprepared for equipment, they were unprepared for | :05:28. | :05:31.
the conditions they were to face when they ventured out on the first | :05:32. | :05:35.
day of the year. We knew it was winter time. We probably did not | :05:36. | :05:38.
quite judge how long it was going to take the journey. It became an issue | :05:39. | :05:46.
when I got two thirds of the way down the Glen and Cathy was | :05:47. | :05:50.
struggling to keep up with me. Then I knew it was going to take a lot | :05:51. | :05:55.
With a dog in tour, they found With a dog in tour, they found | :05:56. | :05:59.
themselves in deep snow in darkness. With the batteries in their head | :06:00. | :06:04.
torches having given out. The snow was up to our waste. We decided we | :06:05. | :06:09.
could not go on any further because we did not know where we were going | :06:10. | :06:13.
and we could not see our hands in front of our faces, we decided to | :06:14. | :06:18.
get our survival bags out and get down for the night in them. A night | :06:19. | :06:25.
out in the Cairngorm plateau in those conditions isn't very | :06:26. | :06:29.
attractive, it was the decision that suit their lives. Being prepared for | :06:30. | :06:33.
when things might call wrong is key in the mountains. You can go up Ben | :06:34. | :06:39.
Nevis on a summers day and you can be knee-high in snow. We have been | :06:40. | :06:44.
there, we have done it. You have to go equipped. You have to have the | :06:45. | :06:48.
right kit, even if the sun is shining on the ground. | :06:49. | :06:53.
An East Midlands hospital trust has started a campaign to reduce | :06:54. | :06:55.
They remain a major cause of injury and death, | :06:56. | :07:00.
and Age UK says one in three people over 65 who live at home will have | :07:01. | :07:04.
Our health correspondent Rob Sissons reports. | :07:05. | :07:13.
He's being looked after at Nottinghamshire's | :07:14. | :07:16.
He says he will regret it for months. | :07:17. | :07:22.
Four steps from the bottom, handrail on the | :07:23. | :07:24.
Did I use the handrail coming downstairs? | :07:25. | :07:27.
He suffered a hip fracture and of course he is not the only one. | :07:28. | :07:40.
At Kings Mill they see up to 400 hip fracture cases from falls each year. | :07:41. | :07:44.
Numbers are rising because of the ageing population. | :07:45. | :07:46.
To prevent them, doctors recommend people check their | :07:47. | :07:48.
homes for hazards, such as loose carpets and rugs, regular exercise, | :07:49. | :07:51.
say eat well and get medical help early for problems | :07:52. | :07:53.
They say it is also important to keep warm this winter. | :07:54. | :08:01.
The impact of a hip fracture on people's | :08:02. | :08:03.
It can lead to long-term consequences. | :08:04. | :08:06.
About 65% of patients who have hip fractures can lose | :08:07. | :08:08.
In the run-up to Christmas they have been seeing a | :08:09. | :08:19.
Now, with the New Year cold snap they are | :08:20. | :08:23.
Edna fell at home, aged 90, she says the fall really | :08:24. | :08:28.
I shouldn't go out if it's like that. | :08:29. | :08:42.
I haven't walked too well these last two years. | :08:43. | :08:44.
I'm pleased it was inside and not outside. | :08:45. | :08:46.
Doctors now aim to operate as soon as possible | :08:47. | :08:48.
falling hip fractures as the | :08:49. | :08:49.
latest evidence shows it can improve recovery and shorten | :08:50. | :08:51.
It's been one of the best years for animal breeding at Twycross Zoo | :08:52. | :09:00.
Among the highlights were rare amur leopard cubs, | :09:01. | :09:03.
The stock take of animals at the zoo has just | :09:04. | :09:08.
finished and the total number, minus all the insects? | :09:09. | :09:10.
We pool all our information on this global database so we can keep track | :09:11. | :09:28.
of how populations are changing within zoos, the researchers can use | :09:29. | :09:32.
that data on their and it is having a positive impact on how | :09:33. | :09:35.
Here Here is the weather. It has been a | :09:36. | :09:41.
from me but coming up next is the from me but coming up next is the | :09:42. | :11:11.
national picture. Good evening. But frost or not of frost, that is the | :11:12. | :11:15.
weather question for tomorrow and the answer is no, probably not | :11:16. | :11:19.
because of this weather front that is slipping south from Scotland, | :11:20. | :11:24.
maybe towards the south-west where we might have one or two | :11:25. | :11:26. |
