Syria? And we speak to Howard Jakonson on his novel about Donald | :00:00. | :00:00.
Trump. Here on BBC One, it's time for | :00:00. | :00:14.
And now the news for the East Midlands, | :00:15. | :00:16.
I'm Anne Davies, good evening. First tonight, a judge has taken | :00:17. | :00:20.
the unusual step of making public the details of a custody battle | :00:21. | :00:23.
which prompted a mother from Nottinghamshire and her two | :00:24. | :00:25.
Samantha Baldwin and her boys were finally found last week | :00:26. | :00:29.
Today, a judge said that serious accusations she made | :00:30. | :00:34.
Our reporter Victoria Hicks has been following this story. | :00:35. | :00:38.
Judge Jeremy Lea said people needed to know some essential facts. | :00:39. | :00:48.
Because there's been so much "ill-informed | :00:49. | :00:49.
You'll remember that Samantha Baldwin was arrested, | :00:50. | :00:55.
at the end of last week, on suspicion of | :00:56. | :00:57.
That's after the police found them in a holiday cabin, | :00:58. | :01:03.
And it all followed a nationwide "missing persons" hunt, | :01:04. | :01:06.
Now today the judge revealed that it started, when Samantha Baldwin | :01:07. | :01:13.
That was while he was making a ruling on what contact | :01:14. | :01:18.
And he said she took the boys away, to prevent the court from deciding | :01:19. | :01:22.
So what did the judge say about those abuse allegations? | :01:23. | :01:36.
In a nutshell, his judgement made it clear Samantha Baldwin's claims | :01:37. | :01:38.
And his Honour Judge Lea spelled it out. | :01:39. | :01:41.
He said "the father had not perpetrated sexual, | :01:42. | :01:43.
physical or emotional abuse against the boys, as | :01:44. | :01:45.
He said "the allegations made by the mother were false". | :01:46. | :01:50.
Samantha Baldwin "genuinely believed he had done it, | :01:51. | :01:52.
And the judge added that "in order to try to prove her case", | :01:53. | :01:58.
she "caused the boys to ingest substances". | :01:59. | :02:00.
Two sedatives that would give rise to a positive drugs test. | :02:01. | :02:03.
In short, the judge said she was trying to obstruct | :02:04. | :02:06.
And he said the two boys are now in the care of the local council. | :02:07. | :02:15.
Next tonight, the fight is on to try to stop two major | :02:16. | :02:18.
High Street banks from shutting down branches across our region. | :02:19. | :02:20.
NatWest and Lloyds both say the growing popularity of online | :02:21. | :02:23.
But campaigners fear the impact of any closure will be | :02:24. | :02:26.
felt far more widely, as James Roberson reports. | :02:27. | :02:34.
It's been there for decades but now it's shutting. | :02:35. | :02:36.
The NatWest branch in Mickleover in Derby is a victim of changing | :02:37. | :02:39.
15 branches of NatWest and of Lloyds are due to close | :02:40. | :02:46.
Matthew Holmes is one of three local councillors who have signed a | :02:47. | :03:01.
petition to stop the closing. We want to send the message to them | :03:02. | :03:03.
to pause and think again about this. I don't think they consider | :03:04. | :03:07.
what the effect is on a local There is still another bank | :03:08. | :03:10.
and aPost Office here but this storeowner says she has seen | :03:11. | :03:22.
another branch close. I am surprised they are closing | :03:23. | :03:25.
because they have just lift which would have | :03:26. | :03:29.
been very expensive. Are you worried | :03:30. | :03:32.
that is closing down? The post office will handle a lot | :03:33. | :03:34.
of transactions and I will have It is not good for the village | :03:35. | :03:39.
and people's access. NatWest say they have listened | :03:40. | :03:47.
to local communities and extended the time between announcing branch | :03:48. | :03:50.
closures and actually shutting to six months, to give people time | :03:51. | :03:53.
to find alternative banking. This is to give people time to find | :03:54. | :03:58.
alternative banking. Meanwhile, in Nottingham, | :03:59. | :04:03.
Lloyds say they've made a difficult decision to close its branch | :04:04. | :04:05.
in old Market Square They say it's because of | :04:06. | :04:08.
the changing way that customers bank with them and that this branch | :04:09. | :04:11.
is being used much less. The savings made in this closure | :04:12. | :04:16.
is going into developing The new ways many individuals and | :04:17. | :04:21.
as online, telephone banking. The new ways many individuals and | :04:22. | :04:29.
businesses are starting to use. In rural Derbyshire, | :04:30. | :04:31.
Lloyds say they are investing in new bank vans so that people | :04:32. | :04:33.
still have a bank Student rowers in Leicester fed up | :04:34. | :04:35.
with debris being dumped along their stretch of river | :04:36. | :04:39.
have decided to deal The watery waste littering | :04:40. | :04:41.
the River Soar risks damaging their boats | :04:42. | :04:45.
and compromising their training. So Jo Healey has been to meet | :04:46. | :04:46.
the rowers to see what they've They are fishing out the mess again | :04:47. | :05:04.
and there is plenty of it in the water and out of it. The other day | :05:05. | :05:09.
we had a couple of hours out on the river bank and we managed to collect | :05:10. | :05:15.
about 26 bikes. There is absolutely loads of letter. Swift boats costing | :05:16. | :05:22.
around ?3000 a piece any damage is costly in time and money. If the | :05:23. | :05:27.
letter gets into the money it is not good for the birds or boats. We can | :05:28. | :05:33.
definitely hit orders on bottles and traffic cones and things like that. | :05:34. | :05:35.
And it isn't unusual to promote And it isn't unusual to promote | :05:36. | :05:39.
things like this. These really cause quite a lot of damage to the boats | :05:40. | :05:45.
so we make it a priority to get them out of the dinner. You don't get | :05:46. | :05:50.
many motorbike six not as much as the pushbikes and trolleys. How much | :05:51. | :05:57.
damage do these cause? Quite a lot of the time they are low-down but | :05:58. | :06:01.
eventually you have handled this sticking up which can cause quite a | :06:02. | :06:04.
lot of damage so try to get these out! It is about getting it all out | :06:05. | :06:10.
but they also want to give something back and they have made the pledge | :06:11. | :06:21.
to dredge every month from now on. You are from the canal and River | :06:22. | :06:27.
trust. Just how damaging is all this and other rivers? We spend over ?1 | :06:28. | :06:35.
million of hard earned cash and lots of volunteer hours in clearing this | :06:36. | :06:38.
rubbish out of the waterways. It can get in the way of boats and repair | :06:39. | :06:43.
work and can be very harmful to wildlife. How would you like to | :06:44. | :06:46.
raise your family and what essentially is a rubbish tip? We | :06:47. | :06:49.
have seen the volunteers picking the have seen the volunteers picking the | :06:50. | :06:53.
rubbish out and I know you rely on them. Shouldn't we be educating | :06:54. | :06:57.
people not to throw stuff into the waterways? Absolutely, it is all | :06:58. | :07:02.
stuff people are throwing in and if people weren't throwing it we | :07:03. | :07:05.
cleaning it up and it seems some cleaning it up and it seems some | :07:06. | :07:10.
people just don't care. The government has announced it has | :07:11. | :07:14.
plans to get much tougher on litter louts. Do you think this will have | :07:15. | :07:20.
any effect? I think it'll be helpful in raising awareness but in terms of | :07:21. | :07:24.
actually starting it it will depend on how much enforcement is actually | :07:25. | :07:29.
done. Perhaps just getting people to understand that what they are doing | :07:30. | :07:35.
is bad and causing problems. Everyone could come and volunteer | :07:36. | :07:38.
away. If you have a crystal ball, is away. If you have a crystal ball, is | :07:39. | :07:45.
the future of waterways good? Definitely and we have more people | :07:46. | :07:49.
visiting and using the waterways than ever before and we are | :07:50. | :07:53.
committed to tackling these kinds of problems and making them even better | :07:54. | :07:54.
yet. We'll find out in a moment | :07:55. | :07:55.
whether today's glorious weather And it's the dry, sunny conditions | :07:56. | :07:58.
which may be putting some of our East Midlands | :07:59. | :08:02.
countryside at risk. We're being asked to be careful not | :08:03. | :08:03.
to accidentally start fires when out and about - | :08:04. | :08:06.
such as this one which destroyed an area of bracken in | :08:07. | :08:09.
Leicestershire's Bradgate Park The advice I give to visitors is | :08:10. | :08:22.
just please be very careful with your activities, watch the cigarette | :08:23. | :08:27.
ends and don't chuck glass bottles around and there a reason we don't | :08:28. | :08:30.
allow barbecues in the park, and this is it. | :08:31. | :08:31.
And it's not just in rural Leicestershire where there's concern | :08:32. | :08:34.
Clearly we have some areas in the county of outstanding natural | :08:35. | :08:43.
beauty. They have taken thousands of years to become established and will | :08:44. | :08:46.
be destroyed very quickly. What I would say to the public is just be | :08:47. | :08:52.
careful when you're out there particularly if you're using | :08:53. | :08:56.
barbecues. It might lead to an accidental fire. These fires can | :08:57. | :09:01.
grow very quickly and soon get out of hand and take considerable | :09:02. | :09:05.
resources to extinguish, and while we do that it causes a tremendous | :09:06. | :09:07.
amount of damage. So, it's goodbye from me - | :09:08. | :09:08.
but with your weather The week ahead is looking fairly | :09:09. | :09:19.
settled but for a week in spring not looking too bad at all. Feeling | :09:20. | :09:24.
noticeably cooler but we are expecting some sunshine and | :09:25. | :09:30.
occasional showers in the Macs. The high-pressure giving us some fine | :09:31. | :09:34.
weather is starting to lose its grip on the weather over the next week or | :09:35. | :09:39.
so. We have this cold front moving in our direction bringing sports and | :09:40. | :09:42.
spots of rain over the next few days. As for tonight, variable | :09:43. | :09:47.
amounts of clouds and the temperature taking a bit of a | :09:48. | :09:51.
tumble, lows of around six Celsius, and through the course of the day | :09:52. | :09:55.
tomorrow, eight very similar picture, starting on a sunny note | :09:56. | :09:59.
and the cloud starts to increase. Highs of around 14 Celsius but | :10:00. | :10:04.
tomorrow even in the cloud will start to melt away again. Again, | :10:05. | :10:11.
more cloud around on Tuesday night, and under clear skies could fall | :10:12. | :10:16.
away Tim Butcher Wise, lows of around eight Celsius and the chance | :10:17. | :10:22.
of an odd shower you that they are. Towards the midweek, the cold front | :10:23. | :10:26.
comes into play and we may see some rain starting to push Southworth, | :10:27. | :10:29.
shouldn't be too heavy but stay tuned to see how that develops, | :10:30. | :10:35.
highs of around 13. So as we head to the midweek and on words to Easter | :10:36. | :10:40.
we start to get more fronts coming in our direction and again we may | :10:41. | :10:46.
see some more showers, so as we look ahead towards Thursday, we've got | :10:47. | :10:51.
more cloud starting to build into the picture and a slightly more dull | :10:52. | :10:57.
day, highs of around 11 and then finally, towards Good Friday, yet | :10:58. | :11:01.
again a springtime mix of sunshine and showers. I will leave you with | :11:02. | :11:03.
the Outlook. will have to keep an eye on the | :11:04. | :11:05.
National forecast with Matt Taylor. Good evening. Let's cut to the chase | :11:06. | :11:16.
the first big holiday weekend of the year is on the horizon and if you | :11:17. | :11:20.
consider last weekend as a taster for the summer, this weekend is not | :11:21. | :11:25.
looking too bad. It will be a bit cooler, temperatures this week and | :11:26. | :11:28.
closer to where they should be at this time of the year thanks to the | :11:29. | :11:31.
north-west breed and the reason for that, if we look at the jet stream, | :11:32. | :11:37.
coming across the Atlantic pushing from north to south -- north-west | :11:38. | :11:42.
breeze. It separates the high pressure and low price and it allows | :11:43. | :11:47.
the northerly airflow to develop. It means there will be some showers | :11:48. | :11:51.
going into Easter weekend but they will only be a small portion of the | :11:52. | :11:54.
weekend wherever you are and there will be some dry weather and when | :11:55. | :11:58.
the sun is out, it is getting stronger so it will negate some of | :11:59. | :12:03.
the chill. Without the sunshine it will be chilly | :12:04. | :12:04. |
