Goodbye. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:02
Hello and welcome to BBC
London News, I'm Alpa Patel. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
A busy road in West London
is still closed this evening, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:25
almost 24 hours after flooding
caused chaos due to | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
a burst water main. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
People became trapped in cars,
shops and restaurants. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
And firefighters had to use boats
to carry out rescues. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:35
The flood has now cleared,
but the effects are still being felt | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
by some business owners. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Nicola Ford reports. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:46
Two bin bags, two elastic bands and
I'm out of it. This was the scene on | 0:00:46 | 0:00:52
King Street in Hammersmith last
night after a burst water main | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
caused chaos. 50 people had to be
rescued by fire crews as the water | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
poured through the streets reaching
three foot deep. People travelled in | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
this restaurant escaped by boat.
That's the only time they decided | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
the leave when they saw the boats.
Bin bags, plastic bags, they had | 0:01:06 | 0:01:15
them so they didn't get wet. No
communecation, people in uniforms | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
walking up and down. -- no
communication. We tried to ask them | 0:01:19 | 0:01:25
what was going on and they said they
didn't know what was going on. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:30
There were people with small kids
and prams. The water main burst | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
right outside Ali's corner shop. He
filmed as the water flooded in | 0:01:35 | 0:01:40
despite his best efforts to stop it.
Damaging the food. And the most | 0:01:40 | 0:01:49
damage in the basement. I don't have
any news. No-one answer me. That's | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
the problem. I know it's happened.
So this has happened. But at least | 0:01:53 | 0:01:59
someone say, I'm responsible.
No-one, hundreds people outside and | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04
no-one answering. Only this shop is
damaged. Flooding stopped just after | 0:02:04 | 0:02:12
Midnight and now the focus is on the
clean-up then the repairs. There | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
have been apologies for disruptions
caused and it's hoped things will be | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
back to normal as soon as possible.
It's not the first time Thames Water | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
has run into trouble. Last year, the
company was fined more than £8 | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
million for failing to reduce
incidents like this. Staff from | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
Thames Water were at the scene today
talking to those affected. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Businesses and residents will be
hoping that help soon follows. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
Councils across London have raised
concerns about companies | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
using a loophole in the law to put
up telephone boxes only to use them | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
as advertising billboards. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
The Local Government Association
says applications have risen 10 | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
fold, but often the phone boxes
do not even include a working phone. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
Westminster received the highest
number of applications, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
the council says the loophole
should be closed. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:08
Behind them are not Telecoms
companies, they're advertising | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
companies who've found a way to put
something on the street that allows | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
them to advertise and bypass the
rules that we have as a local | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
authority. They don't offer Wi-Fi
despite they advertise they do offer | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
it. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29 | |
All petrol and diesel vehicles
could be banned at peak times | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
from part of east London,
under new plans being considered | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
by Hackney and Islington councils. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
Only the very cleanest will be
allowed into some roads | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
in Shoreditch which are among those
with the worst air | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
quality in the Capital. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
It's hoped the measures will help
reduce air and noise | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
pollution in the area. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Time for the weather
here's Georgina Burnett. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:57
That's it from me and the team,
there's plenty more on our website, | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
We had beautiful weather captured by
weather-watchers today. We are going | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
to see the back of the rain as it
moves off to the east. Also it's | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
been drawing in some milder air, so
that will be noticeable overnight. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20
We are holding on to a lot of cloud
and it does look like it should stay | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
dry once the rain's cleared. The
winds ease too. Temperatures getting | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
down to seven or eight. It's a
cloudy day to finish off the weekend | 0:04:29 | 0:04:35
tomorrow but it's looking mainly
dry. We can't rule out one or two | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
spots of drizzle. Most of us should
have a dry day. Certainly much | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
milder with highs of 13. We may even
scrape a 14. Now, as we head through | 0:04:43 | 0:04:49
the week, it's looking changeable
and it looks like we could have some | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
wintry showers on Wednesday. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
That's it from me and the team,
there's plenty more on our website, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
which is on your screen now. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00 |
