The headlines from BBC Look North this Thursday night. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Soldiers tell homeowners to prepare for flooding as the East Coast | :00:07. | :00:11.
And after the last flood, I had a couple of strokes. | :00:12. | :00:17.
We are doing everything that we can to make sure | :00:18. | :00:22.
that we are prepared and that the local | :00:23. | :00:24.
He was the Lincoln boss who went on to the biggest job | :00:25. | :00:30.
in the English game - tributes tonight to Graham Taylor. | :00:31. | :00:39.
What Graham did was to connect the football club and the community. | :00:40. | :00:44.
And some pretty severe weather to come over the next 24 hours. | :00:45. | :00:47.
Stay tuned, I will have a full forecast shortly. | :00:48. | :01:07.
Soldiers have spent tonight knocking on doors telling homeowners | :01:08. | :01:09.
A combination of strong winds and high tides could bring | :01:10. | :01:12.
widespread flooding all along the East Coast. | :01:13. | :01:14.
Thousands of properties could be affected from Bridlington to Boston. | :01:15. | :01:17.
Some schools have said they'll be shut tomorrow | :01:18. | :01:18.
as the authorities do all they can to protect coastal communities. | :01:19. | :01:22.
Jill Archbold is live in Hull tonight. | :01:23. | :01:26.
The tidal barrier might be up now, but it has already been down once | :01:27. | :01:41.
this evening, and it is likely to be lowered again, at least another | :01:42. | :01:46.
twice in the next 24 hours. It's not just people in Hull who will be | :01:47. | :01:47.
watching the weather carefully. There are 27 flood warnings | :01:48. | :01:49.
across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire covering high tide | :01:50. | :01:51.
tomorrow morning A warning means that | :01:52. | :01:53.
flooding is expected. There are two warnings covering | :01:54. | :01:56.
the sea defences at Humberston and Cleethorpes, another | :01:57. | :02:02.
warning for Immingham. Then if we look at the Humber | :02:03. | :02:04.
Estuary on the North Bank A further two cover the coast | :02:05. | :02:06.
at Bridlington and then the Easington and Kilnsea area | :02:07. | :02:11.
is also at risk. The River Ouse is covered by four | :02:12. | :02:16.
warnings and then there's one at Grimsby and three covering | :02:17. | :02:19.
the South Bank at Winteringham, South Ferriby, New Holland | :02:20. | :02:23.
and Barton to Immingham Dock. There are a further seven flood | :02:24. | :02:27.
warnings in Lincolnshire six for the sea defences both north | :02:28. | :02:30.
and south of Mablethorpe Because of these warnings, | :02:31. | :02:42.
precautions have been taken right across our region. | :02:43. | :02:45.
Along Lincolnshire's coast, the threat of a storm surge led | :02:46. | :02:47.
Soldiers deployed to Skegness to help the police by knocking | :02:48. | :02:53.
on doors and tonight warning residents of the risks. | :02:54. | :02:55.
They've asked for our assistance in warning and informing the local | :02:56. | :02:58.
And the residents, to ensure that they are prepared for the flooding. | :02:59. | :03:06.
If it does arise, that they've got somewhere to go. | :03:07. | :03:09.
And if they are vulnerable and need our assistance, | :03:10. | :03:14.
that we are prepared to give it to them. | :03:15. | :03:16.
Thousands of people living near the east coast are being given | :03:17. | :03:19.
the option of being evacuated to an inland rest centre. | :03:20. | :03:21.
If you are in a single story dwelling, a caravan or a chalet | :03:22. | :03:24.
and you are close to the sea defences, you might want to think | :03:25. | :03:27.
about spending the evening, or perhaps the next couple | :03:28. | :03:30.
On the Humber bank at South Ferriby, the Environment Agency have put up | :03:31. | :03:35.
temporary defences and local residents were moving | :03:36. | :03:38.
And after the last flood, I had a couple of strokes. | :03:39. | :03:46.
It's just, it's stuff that we've got a lot of memories about. | :03:47. | :03:53.
And we saved it last time, a lot of it. | :03:54. | :03:55.
On the North bank, water pumps were on stand-by and residents who'd | :03:56. | :04:02.
been flooded before put up their own defences. | :04:03. | :04:06.
But now that the weather has settled down, I don't feel as though | :04:07. | :04:12.
Because when it was really windy, it which the waves up. | :04:13. | :04:17.
I think they have been overcautious now. | :04:18. | :04:19.
But then, part of me's saying, "Are they?" | :04:20. | :04:23.
East coast communities and those living near the Humber have been | :04:24. | :04:25.
told to be prepared - it's believed a high tide tomorrow | :04:26. | :04:28.
evening currently poses the greatest threat. | :04:29. | :04:36.
water pumps have been on stand-by. water pumps have been on stand-by. | :04:37. | :04:44.
Vulnerable points at the north bank. They'll be back in the early morning | :04:45. | :04:48.
and back again for high tide tomorrow | :04:49. | :04:49.
Ben Hocking is from the Environment Agency and joins me now | :04:50. | :04:54.
Good evening. How concerned are you about the next 24 hours? Good | :04:55. | :05:03.
evening. As your colleague's just been explaining, we have a large | :05:04. | :05:07.
number of flood warnings across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. And | :05:08. | :05:10.
flood warning means that there is an immediate risk of flooding, so we're | :05:11. | :05:14.
really keen for people to heed those warnings. If they want to see which | :05:15. | :05:18.
areas they are in, whether they might be affected by one of those | :05:19. | :05:23.
warnings, they can visit their website and type in the flood, that | :05:24. | :05:26.
will give them all the information they need on the government website. | :05:27. | :05:29.
People will be worried we could see a repeat of 2013. Are you sure that | :05:30. | :05:38.
we couldn't be again tomorrow? We have been preparing for the | :05:39. | :05:41.
potential for flooding since Monday this week, when the forecast | :05:42. | :05:45.
indicated that this was a possibility. And we've been working | :05:46. | :05:49.
really hard with our partners in local authorities, the emergency | :05:50. | :05:52.
services, and as you have reported, the Lib military, to the best job we | :05:53. | :05:57.
can warning people. I accept that -- the military. How sure are you that | :05:58. | :06:03.
it is not going to be like 2013? Well, we think that there's less of | :06:04. | :06:09.
a risk of that happening this time around. But obviously, we want | :06:10. | :06:12.
people to take all the precautions that they can to protect themselves | :06:13. | :06:16.
and their property from risk of this. That is quite telling. If | :06:17. | :06:21.
there isn't a problem of high tide at the morning, it does that mean it | :06:22. | :06:26.
wouldn't be at tea-time? It could be was in the afternoon. Tidal peaks | :06:27. | :06:31.
come twice a day, so the tidal barrier at Hull was close this | :06:32. | :06:34.
evening and will be closed again for high tide in the morning. And a | :06:35. | :06:38.
tomorrow evening. Certainly, we're focusing at the moment on that high | :06:39. | :06:43.
tide tomorrow morning. But there'll be another high tide that could also | :06:44. | :06:46.
be affected by that storm surge to my evening as well. So people do | :06:47. | :06:51.
need to across those flood warnings. Thank you much indeed. Most grateful | :06:52. | :06:52.
to you. Keep up to date on all the latest | :06:53. | :06:55.
on the weather and the storm surge BBC Radio Humberside is on air | :06:56. | :06:58.
from five o'clock tomorrow morning, while BBC Radio Lincolnshire | :06:59. | :07:02.
is on air throughout the night. Stars from across the world | :07:03. | :07:08.
of football have been paying tribute to the former Lincoln City | :07:09. | :07:10.
and England manager Graham Taylor, He grew up in Scunthorpe and then | :07:11. | :07:13.
spent his whole playing career in Lincolnshire - | :07:14. | :07:23.
with Grimsby Town and then Lincoln City, before | :07:24. | :07:26.
going into management at And that was a path that took him | :07:27. | :07:27.
all the way to the biggest job Our sports reporter | :07:28. | :07:32.
Simon Clark has this. When after a modest playing | :07:33. | :07:35.
career at Grimsby Town and Lincoln City Graham Taylor | :07:36. | :07:37.
accepted the manager's job at Sincil Bank aged 28, | :07:38. | :07:39.
it changed his life. He led them to promotion | :07:40. | :07:41.
with a record points score. Pop star Elton John spotted | :07:42. | :07:43.
this and encouraged him to join his club Watford, | :07:44. | :07:46.
who he took from fourth That brought him the biggest job | :07:47. | :07:48.
of all with England. But the team nearest his heart, | :07:49. | :07:51.
home-town club Scunthorpe United. You have to have a reality | :07:52. | :07:55.
when looking at the situation Would we want to see them again | :07:56. | :07:57.
in the championship? Would we expect them to be doing | :07:58. | :08:02.
much more than having Graham Taylor was very much | :08:03. | :08:11.
a son of Scunthorpe. He went to the local primary school, | :08:12. | :08:16.
and that's just a stone's throw away from the place that | :08:17. | :08:20.
would have the biggest impact on young Graham's mind, | :08:21. | :08:27.
the old Showground now a supermarket, the former home | :08:28. | :08:29.
of Scunthorpe United. A club which in later life | :08:30. | :08:31.
would make him a vice president. We were so fortunate, | :08:32. | :08:35.
to be honest with you, The last time he was here | :08:36. | :08:37.
was back in October, and he was always telling us | :08:38. | :08:41.
what we're doing right, Very enthusiastic | :08:42. | :08:43.
about our promotion push. He came back in July 2016 | :08:44. | :08:47.
to attend the grand opening We felt it was really | :08:48. | :08:49.
important that he came back, because it marked the transition | :08:50. | :08:55.
from the old school to the new school, and it was just | :08:56. | :08:57.
lovely because he was so pleased Graham Taylor's football | :08:58. | :09:00.
service earned him an OBE, but here it's his transformation | :09:01. | :09:05.
of Lincoln that best remembered. Most of all I think what Graham did | :09:06. | :09:10.
was to connect the football club with the community, | :09:11. | :09:15.
more than any other manager was doing at the time, | :09:16. | :09:19.
or for a long time afterwards. Graham Taylor used to joke | :09:20. | :09:26.
that he was the only man alive revered by all three big | :09:27. | :09:29.
Lincolnshire ruivals, Remembering Graham Taylor. Now, | :09:30. | :09:50.
let's get the forecast. Many of us have seen the severe weather | :09:51. | :09:53.
conditions today and tonight we do have another weather warning in | :09:54. | :09:57.
force. It's a warning for snow. This is mainly further inland, a couple | :09:58. | :10:02.
of showers here. Elsewhere, it will turn largely dry. You can see the | :10:03. | :10:05.
whole map is turning blue, a couple of showers along the coast there. | :10:06. | :10:10.
Lows of about 0 Celsius, it will be a cold one. Try warning, ice inland. | :10:11. | :10:17.
-- tomorrow morning. Gale force winds, large waves as well. Do take | :10:18. | :10:21.
care if you're heading to the east tomorrow. We will see some pretty | :10:22. | :10:26.
nasty conditions there. Again, a couple of snow showers possible and | :10:27. | :10:31.
likely to fall to lower levels. The pressure chart for tomorrow night, | :10:32. | :10:35.
that weather system moves away. You can see the map is turning blue. A | :10:36. | :10:39.
very cold night, leading us into a very cold day on Saturday. Another | :10:40. | :10:44.
warning in force. On Saturday. The rest of us, I think it'll be a dry | :10:45. | :10:48.
day, very cold. Stay tuned to the latest forecast taken. High tide in | :10:49. | :10:55.
Hull tomorrow is at 6:34am and 6:50pm tomorrow night. They you for | :10:56. | :10:57.
watching. Take care. note. If that's not your sort of | :10:58. | :11:01.
thing, Sunday will be cloudier and milder. | :11:02. | :11:06.
Good evening. It was such a mild December, wasn't it, but winter has | :11:07. | :11:14.
arrived. Tomorrow morning, again, could be prising the wipers off the | :11:15. | :11:19.
frozen windscreen. Yes, it's going to be cold tonight, whether it is | :11:20. | :11:23.
liquid,/ or snow, it will freeze solid late at night with | :11:24. | :11:26.
temperatures close to or below zero in many places. This was the early | :11:27. | :11:30.
snow which pushed across the south-east, a few centimetres over | :11:31. | :11:34.
the high ground. Now we concentrate on the showers, which feed in over | :11:35. | :11:38.
the north and west of the UK. Some getting into the Midlands, giving a | :11:39. | :11:40.
further coding in places. | :11:41. | :11:43. |
