Good evening and welcome to Look North. | :00:12. | :00:12.
A man's body has been found in the River Ouse in York. | :00:13. | :00:15.
Police were called to the river this afternoon close to Holly Terrace. | :00:16. | :00:18.
A member of the public had reported a body in the water. | :00:19. | :00:21.
Officers are now investigating how the man ended up in the Ouse. | :00:22. | :00:24.
They have not yet been able to identify him. | :00:25. | :00:26.
A North Yorkshire charity says it needs more volunteers to help | :00:27. | :00:29.
with the increasing number of people suffering from dementia. | :00:30. | :00:31.
Alzheimer's support group Side by Side helps people | :00:32. | :00:33.
who feel isolated and unable to leave their homes to keep doing | :00:34. | :00:36.
They want everybody with dementia to be able to access | :00:37. | :00:39.
Carla Fowler reports from Scarborough. | :00:40. | :00:46.
Although Frida Ward was a lifeguard and summing instructor | :00:47. | :00:49.
in Scarborough for decades, today is her first trip | :00:50. | :00:53.
Frida has vascular dementia, but she still loves swimming, | :00:54. | :00:58.
so volunteer Liz Colling is helping keep Frida and her memories afloat. | :00:59. | :01:03.
They were introduced by local Alzehimer's charity Side by Side. | :01:04. | :01:07.
They match dementia sufferers with volunteers who enjoy the same | :01:08. | :01:10.
things and can help them participate in the activities they are used to. | :01:11. | :01:14.
We were matched because we both like swimming anyway, | :01:15. | :01:16.
but she becomes more animated - it sounds a bit corny, doesn't it? | :01:17. | :01:22.
More alive, she has more sparkle in her ey and she is clearly | :01:23. | :01:25.
So when she starts to do it and talk about it, | :01:26. | :01:29.
Frida has spent her life in Scarborough. | :01:30. | :01:33.
She has raised a family here and is a well-known figure | :01:34. | :01:36.
locally as she has taught hundreds of schoolchildren swim. | :01:37. | :01:40.
Getting back in the water is a way for her to reconnect with her past | :01:41. | :01:44.
As our population ages, dementia will touch more | :01:45. | :01:49.
lives than ever before, but it can be tackled side-by-side. | :01:50. | :01:57.
Young Muslims have carried out a series of litter | :01:58. | :01:59.
This group braved the rain in the Paige Hall area | :02:00. | :02:03.
Similar clean-ups happened in Rotherham, Doncaster | :02:04. | :02:08.
and Huddersfield, with hundreds of young people involved | :02:09. | :02:10.
They wanted to improve community spirits and counter what they call | :02:11. | :02:14.
We are trying to change the image that Islam has at the moment, | :02:15. | :02:20.
which is obviously a very negative one, and we've only got a small | :02:21. | :02:23.
minority that are ruining this image and we have so many Muslims that | :02:24. | :02:26.
live peacefully and engage with our society in a positive manner. | :02:27. | :02:30.
We are all coming together in such a simple task | :02:31. | :02:32.
Almost 300 people, twice as many as last year, | :02:33. | :02:40.
took part in the annual dip at an outdoor pool in | :02:41. | :02:43.
James Roberson went to meet some of those brave enough to take part. | :02:44. | :02:51.
You need to plunge in if you are intending to swim at the Lido | :02:52. | :02:54.
For some people, the 10 degree water temperature was still too cold, | :02:55. | :02:59.
despite it being three times warmer than the air. | :03:00. | :03:02.
This is the fourth year the parish council has opened | :03:03. | :03:05.
I mean, I can't quite believe how many people we have had | :03:06. | :03:11.
I mean, last year we had 150 and we have already had 80 | :03:12. | :03:15.
If you think that your intrepid reporter is crazy enough | :03:16. | :03:19.
to get in there with them, I'm sorry, I'm not as | :03:20. | :03:22.
My sister wanted to do it, so I kind of just came with her. | :03:23. | :03:29.
I guess it is kind of the New Year, new you, get in one end | :03:30. | :03:33.
of the water, come out a new man, she said, but... | :03:34. | :03:36.
There are some crazy, people in bikinis, though! | :03:37. | :03:39.
You can only go for a small amount of time, so I thought that would be | :03:40. | :03:44.
With warming beverages on hand, this year's swim attracted 284 people, | :03:45. | :03:50.
twice last year's total, and they hope to beat | :03:51. | :03:52.
Now let's have a look at the weather prospects. | :03:53. | :04:12.
Over the next couple of hours we will see the showers die away. | :04:13. | :04:15.
The risk of some pace but plenty of sunshine around | :04:16. | :04:17.
A very cold day, high temperatures of just four Celsius. | :04:18. | :04:21.
A little workload around on Tuesday, but certainly staying very cold | :04:22. | :04:30.
So there is a risk of ice first thing in the morning, | :04:31. | :04:33.
They are largely confined to these coastal areas, | :04:34. | :04:36.
so it will be a dry day for most of us with plenty | :04:37. | :04:39.
but it is wintry sunshine and it will be a very cold day on Monday | :04:40. | :04:44.
Over the next couple of days temperatures widely staying | :04:45. | :04:47.
There is a little bit more cloud around on Tuesday and we will see | :04:48. | :04:52.
highs of seven Celsius, but as we head towards | :04:53. | :04:54.
temperatures take another depth, so a very cold start to the first | :04:55. | :04:58.
highs of seven Celsius, but as we head towards | :04:59. | :05:00.
We will be back tomorrow. Happy New Year. | :05:01. | :05:05.
For many, New Year's Day was a shocker with all of that rain | :05:06. | :05:15.
around. Tomorrow will be sunny, but it is getting colder. This is rain | :05:16. | :05:19.
clearing from the south-east. These specks of white as snow mixed in | :05:20. | :05:23.
with showers across parts of northern England, particularly | :05:24. | :05:26.
across Scotland, low levels here. I say that they hazard in northern and | :05:27. | :05:31.
eastern areas. I would not rule out slippery areas almost anywhere by | :05:32. | :05:36.
the morning, by which time temperatures will be close to or | :05:37. | :05:40.
below freezing in many places. A bright and sunny start, but still | :05:41. | :05:44.
wintry showers, sliding down the North Sea coast. Some snow down at | :05:45. | :05:48.
quite low levels to the north of Scotland. Here, the snow will turn | :05:49. | :05:52.
to rain. Something milder creeping in off the Atlantic as it clouds | :05:53. | :05:57.
over. Further south, despite that sunshine, it will feel cold. 3-5 is | :05:58. | :06:02.
the best I can offer you, briefly, through the afternoon. Then | :06:03. | :06:05.
temperatures fall away like a stone. Through the | :06:06. | :06:07. |
