Good evening. the late news at ten.

:00:09.:00:09.

Police in South Yorkshire are to examine whether the murders

:00:10.:00:11.

of three teenage girls in the 1960s and '70s were committed

:00:12.:00:14.

Their potential suspect - 79-year-old Peter Pickering -

:00:15.:00:19.

was convicted of killing Shirley Ann Boldy in 1972.

:00:20.:00:21.

Now a detective thinks he could be linked to the murders

:00:22.:00:24.

Peter Pickering has been locked up since 1972 when he confessed

:00:25.:00:34.

to murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility

:00:35.:00:36.

His victim, 14-year-old Shirley Ann Boldy, was raped,

:00:37.:00:45.

strangled and stabbed on her way home from school near Barnsley.

:00:46.:00:48.

The crime bears similarities with the murder of Elsie Frost in 1965.

:00:49.:00:51.

The 14-year-old was killed in this underpass near Wakefield.

:00:52.:00:58.

Pickering was questioned about the murder in 2015

:00:59.:01:00.

and was arrested last year in connection with the killing.

:01:01.:01:04.

Now a detective investigating the murder of Anne Dunwell,

:01:05.:01:07.

has revealed he, too, considers Peter Pickering

:01:08.:01:08.

The case is South Yorkshire's longest unsolved murder

:01:09.:01:12.

and was revisited in 1988 when DNA evidence became possible,

:01:13.:01:15.

Anne was 13 when she was strangled on her way home from her

:01:16.:01:27.

Howard Road is where she was last seen alive.

:01:28.:01:34.

Police stress there's no new evidence or a new witness

:01:35.:01:37.

to link her murder with those of Shirley Anne Boldy

:01:38.:01:39.

But Anne's clothing is in police stores.

:01:40.:01:43.

The DNA is to be the reanalysed in the hope of a breakthrough

:01:44.:01:46.

Two men are in hospital with serious injuries

:01:47.:01:56.

It happened at Bar Fibre in Briggate in the early hours of this morning.

:01:57.:02:05.

Police have arrested two other men and recovered

:02:06.:02:07.

With just three days to go before we start the formal process

:02:08.:02:12.

of leaving the European Union, the debate over what terms the UK

:02:13.:02:15.

should try and negotiate is likely to be a long one.

:02:16.:02:18.

Our political editor Len Tingle has been to see two successful

:02:19.:02:21.

Both facing similar challenges over staff and the economy,

:02:22.:02:24.

This woman comes from the Czech Republic.

:02:25.:02:29.

She's one of a 70-strong workforce in this hotel here in Harrogate.

:02:30.:02:32.

Well over 40 of them are EU nationals.

:02:33.:02:34.

I've had one person leave recently and go home because of the whole

:02:35.:02:38.

Brexit situation and the nervousness that that's left and

:02:39.:02:40.

Surprisingly, general manager Simon Cotton voted to Leave

:02:41.:02:51.

He is anxious about the future of his EU immigrant workforce,

:02:52.:02:55.

but believes common sense will find a solution.

:02:56.:03:05.

I think we should have more immigration, just

:03:06.:03:07.

better controls on it, so who's coming in, what sort

:03:08.:03:10.

of skills they can provide and if they can help drive

:03:11.:03:12.

the economy, because we need more people in this country

:03:13.:03:15.

Just across town, formal Royal Engineer Paul Rawlinson

:03:16.:03:18.

started off his coffee and cake shop when he left the army just

:03:19.:03:21.

He voted Remain and is very worried about the EU

:03:22.:03:24.

Some of my team were pretty upset, especially the EU nationals.

:03:25.:03:32.

Some were saying, "OK, we're not welcome here any more,

:03:33.:03:34.

we're going to start making plans to leave."

:03:35.:03:36.

I think that has levelled out a little bit.

:03:37.:03:43.

The fall in the value of the pound is highlighted by both

:03:44.:03:46.

businesses, but they come to totally different conclusions.

:03:47.:03:48.

We've got a number of airports on our doorstep and people can fly

:03:49.:03:51.

in for short breaks or longer holidays and their money

:03:52.:03:54.

Elements of our business like coffee which are all traded in the dollar,

:03:55.:03:59.

the pound's weakness against that currency means that prices have

:04:00.:04:01.

risen and we've already had to add that on to our guests.

:04:02.:04:04.

If the different views here are anything to go by,

:04:05.:04:07.

serving up a Brexit deal acceptable to all is going to

:04:08.:04:09.

Let's turn to football now, and in the League One promotion

:04:10.:04:22.

clash, Scunthorpe came from behind to beat Bradford City three-two.

:04:23.:04:25.

Their late winner means they move above the Bantams

:04:26.:04:27.

And in League Two, the leaders Doncaster Rovers

:04:28.:04:30.

A headed goal from a corner in the 50th minute gave

:04:31.:04:34.

second-placed Plymouth Argyle a one-nil victory at the Keepmoat

:04:35.:04:36.

stadium and cut Rovers' lead at the top of the table

:04:37.:04:39.

In Super League, Castleford Tigers came back from fourteen-nil down

:04:40.:04:49.

to beat Catalans Dragons 43-26 and go back to the top of the table.

:04:50.:04:52.

And commiserations to Sheffield's Nick Matthew.

:04:53.:04:53.

He lost to France's Gregory Gaultier in the final of the British Open

:04:54.:04:57.

squash tournament in Hull this afternoon.

:04:58.:05:04.

We've had another gorgeous sunny day.

:05:05.:05:05.

It's been a gorgeous weekend and we are ending it

:05:06.:05:11.

A largely clear picture initially, but we will see cloud increasing

:05:12.:05:16.

and patches of mist and murk and fog, particularly over higher

:05:17.:05:19.

ground, but the cloud will prevent temperatures from dropping as low,

:05:20.:05:21.

It may be a bit of a dull start to the day but bear with it,

:05:22.:05:28.

it brighten up and we'll see some breaks in the cloud,

:05:29.:05:30.

some bright spells developing and a largely dry picture.

:05:31.:05:34.

Maybe not quite as warm and mild as it was over the weekend,

:05:35.:05:37.

highs of about 11 Celsius, a little bit cooler

:05:38.:05:39.

along the East Coast with a moderate onshore breeze.

:05:40.:05:42.

For the rest of the week, the story is more cloud,

:05:43.:05:44.

It has been a lovely day for other's rain but staying mild.

:05:45.:05:52.

It has been a lovely day for other's day. I hope you've enjoyed the

:05:53.:05:57.

celebrations. We're back at 10:20pm. Bye-bye.

:05:58.:06:06.

For the first time this year, the temperature reached 20 Celsius, the

:06:07.:06:14.

highest recorded in Highland Scotland, lovely picture from

:06:15.:06:18.

earlier on. We have seen more cloud around today, mostly thin, high

:06:19.:06:22.

cloud, but some coming from the near continent, we are seeing more

:06:23.:06:25.

spilling in from the North Sea, so some changes on the way. Still, the

:06:26.:06:30.

temperatures will drop quickly, low cloud and misty weather coming in

:06:31.:06:33.

from the North Sea later in the night to conflict the radiation

:06:34.:06:37.

balance. Cold overnight, more chilly in the south, the winds are lighter

:06:38.:06:41.

than last night, a touch of frost more possible towards the north-west

:06:42.:06:46.

of the UK. Not quite as cold or Northern Ireland, more cloud here,

:06:47.:06:51.

not as warm as today, a great start from East Wales, north-east England,

:06:52.:06:55.

a lot of low cloud and misty weather will burn off, most of us enjoying

:06:56.:06:59.

some sunshine. Where the cloud lingers, the coast of north-east

:07:00.:07:02.

England, it will be

:07:03.:07:03.
