Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. Six, so it's goodbye from me -

:00:00.:00:00.

The headlines tonight: Sent to jail for manslaughter -

:00:00.:00:00.

the parents of a 13-month-old who drowned after being left alone

At the point I saw them smoking in the garden, the baby must have been

Also tonight: The bonus of a legacy - Lichfield Cathedral is given

I've always been a fan of Turner's since I was a boy. You can now get

:01:00.:01:02.

the details, join me later. The parents of a 13-month-old boy

:01:03.:01:14.

from Worcestershire, who drowned in the bath,

:01:15.:01:18.

have both been jailed The court heard that Kian Dale had

:01:19.:01:20.

been left unattended for up to 13 minutes,

:01:21.:01:30.

while Wayne Dale and Lisa Passey They were both found

:01:31.:01:32.

guilty of manslaughter - Wayne Dale was jailed for 4.5 years,

:01:33.:01:35.

Lisa Passey for four years. In the quiet Worcestershire

:01:36.:01:38.

town of Tenbury Wells, they were a familiar sight

:01:39.:01:43.

on the High Street. Everyone thought they

:01:44.:01:45.

were good parents. I just thought they were normal,

:01:46.:01:51.

responsible parents because he always had the kid

:01:52.:01:58.

on his shoulders going around town and she would be

:01:59.:02:01.

pushing a pushchair. Maria Fernandez was a neighbour

:02:02.:02:03.

who often spoke to the couple. She was at home

:02:04.:02:05.

on the day Kian died. I saw them in the garden

:02:06.:02:13.

so at the point I was seeing them the baby must have been in the bath,

:02:14.:02:16.

so it was about shocking for me That the baby was over

:02:17.:02:26.

there and I couldn't do anything. The court heard that

:02:27.:02:33.

that Saturday tea-time, screaming with his lifeless baby son

:02:34.:02:37.

in his arms and found him lying at the back of the baby

:02:38.:02:44.

seat it in the bath, A retired nurse living a few doors

:02:45.:02:47.

up came to try and resuscitate Kian The air ambulance landed

:02:48.:02:52.

in the school playing fields opposite and Kian was taken

:02:53.:02:55.

to Birmingham Children's Hospital The case rested on the amount

:02:56.:02:57.

of time that Kian had been in the bath and we identified

:02:58.:03:01.

a period of up to 30 minutes. We worked that out from witness

:03:02.:03:06.

testimony and we also identified that Wayne had used a computer

:03:07.:03:10.

whilst Kian was in the bath so we analysed that computer on that

:03:11.:03:16.

computer gave us certain evidence around how it had been used

:03:17.:03:19.

during that period of time. This was where Passey and Dale had

:03:20.:03:22.

been entertaining a friend, Bath seats can give

:03:23.:03:25.

you a false sense of security. They enable you to back your child

:03:26.:03:30.

without keeping hold of them at all times,

:03:31.:03:33.

and that's maybe where the problem arises, parents think their child

:03:34.:03:35.

is securely supported in the bath, that they're not going to slip under

:03:36.:03:38.

the water, but as this tragic case highlights,

:03:39.:03:43.

that can still happen and in fact it's not the first time that we've

:03:44.:03:45.

heard of a child falling out News of Kian's parents' conviction

:03:46.:03:49.

has divided this country town. It's pretty defenceless at that

:03:50.:03:53.

age, so no, I'm afraid During her trial, Lisa Passey said

:03:54.:04:08.

she didn't want pity. She admitted she'd been

:04:09.:04:15.

stupid not to have gone I think it's going to have a big

:04:16.:04:17.

effect on her mentally The guilt is going to

:04:18.:04:23.

be deadly, I think. I don't know how she would feel,

:04:24.:04:27.

but I wouldn't be able It's one big, giant

mistake, isn't it? A 21-year-old woman has been

arrested in Birmingham, on suspicion of preparing

for terrorism acts. The West Midlands Counterterrorism

to an ongoing police incident. Diversions are in place but drivers

:05:08.:05:09.

are being warned of long delays. It's the dream of anyone

:05:10.:05:21.

who is challenged with the big bills which come with an historic building

:05:22.:05:25.

- being left a valuable work of art. That's what's happened

:05:26.:05:28.

to Lichfield Cathedral - it's been given a painting

by the world renowned After spending two centuries

this watercolour hasn't been seen collection and has been bequeathed

:05:44.:05:54.

to Lichfield Cathedral. If you know Lichfield,

:05:55.:06:01.

you will know this scene because this is Minsterpol,

:06:02.:06:06.

but we also know it is his own because it is in his

:06:07.:06:13.

own perspective. That's a characteristic of his,

:06:14.:06:17.

he moved to capture light, so every pilgrim to the cathedral

:06:18.:06:22.

will have seen it for 1,300 years, Alongside the painting

:06:23.:06:25.

are Turner's sketches, many of which he did as a young man

:06:26.:06:30.

before he completed These possibly haven't been along

:06:31.:06:33.

with the final watercolour piece, that's quite special,

:06:34.:06:42.

to have the opportunity to stand and look at where possibly the last

person who saw them all together The three spires of Lichfield

Cathedral have inspired artists for centuries and alongside

:06:50.:06:55.

the pitched by Turner, there are paintings from other

:06:56.:07:00.

artists who captured this building's distinctive and awe-inspiring

:07:01.:07:02.

architecture. Every artist has seen the cathedral

:07:03.:07:07.

with their own image and evolve It's that kind of domination

:07:08.:07:10.

and that kind of, like, wow factor, that impact,

:07:11.:07:18.

that is inspiring. I've always been a great fan

:07:19.:07:20.

of Turner since I was a boy The exhibition is free and is open

:07:21.:07:23.

daily for the next six weeks. It's a rare chance to see

:07:24.:07:31.

a collection of paintings celebrating one of the Midlands'

:07:32.:07:33.

most magnificent buildings. And Liz is at Lichfield

:07:34.:07:41.

Cathedral for us now. So the Turner painting

:07:42.:07:44.

has been presented to A very generous legacy, exciting for

:07:45.:07:57.

art lovers and for the Cathedral. The plan is once this exhibition has

:07:58.:08:02.

finished, the painting will be sold with the proceeds going towards the

:08:03.:08:07.

Cathedral's work. It's really difficult to estimate what this

:08:08.:08:11.

painting might fetch. It is likely to be of interest both to museums,

:08:12.:08:18.

but also to wealthy private collectors and that is why this

:08:19.:08:20.

exhibition is a great opportunity for people to come and see this

:08:21.:08:24.

masterpiece for themselves, because once the painting has been sold,

:08:25.:08:28.

there are no guarantees that it will stay on public display.

:08:29.:08:34.

A new service to support stalking victims in Gloucestershire has been

:08:35.:08:36.

set up in memory of a woman who was murdered

:08:37.:08:39.

20-year-old Hollie Gazzard was stabbed to death

:08:40.:08:43.

The new service will offer victims access to a dedicated caseworker,

:08:44.:08:48.

In February 2014, Hollie Gazzard complained to police that her former

:08:49.:08:54.

boyfriend was harassing and stalking her.

:08:55.:08:57.

Now the trust set up in her name, headed by her dad Nick,

:08:58.:09:07.

wants to stop that happening to others and is paying for a case

:09:08.:09:12.

worker to help high-risk victims of stalking.

:09:13.:09:14.

Early intervention, looking at behaviours,

:09:15.:09:15.

not just actions but intentions, even the small elements of stalking

:09:16.:09:21.

can lead further down the line to rape and homicides we must take

:09:22.:09:25.

it seriously and get professionals clued up as to what to do,

:09:26.:09:28.

get the police clued up, in terms of stalking and ready

:09:29.:09:32.

to deal with high-risk stalkers and provide that support to victims

:09:33.:09:35.

to make sure they don't go through a life of hell.

:09:36.:09:37.

Awareness of the new support available is key to this project

:09:38.:09:43.

and will involve the likes of the police, clinicians

:09:44.:09:45.

and probation who will all identify victims and perpetrators.

:09:46.:09:53.

Ellie is a Gloucestershire GP who was stalked for nine years.

:09:54.:09:56.

No one should have to go through nine years of living in fear

:09:57.:09:59.

and not knowing where to go, who to go to, how to

:10:00.:10:02.

This is going to put experts here in Gloucestershire who will be

:10:03.:10:06.

Today's launch comes on the day the University of Gloucester publish

:10:07.:10:15.

research showing 94% of homicides had elements

:10:16.:10:18.

of stalking such as possession, control and surveillance and often

:10:19.:10:20.

I've worked in cases where there have been cameras

:10:21.:10:24.

in the home that the person didn't know about, there has

:10:25.:10:28.

been GPS tracking, that is tracking on the car,

:10:29.:10:30.

There are all really serious stalking behaviours.

:10:31.:10:36.

Stalking is a growing problem with easy access to online data

:10:37.:10:39.

This new support clinic wants to make sure that anyone who feels

:10:40.:10:48.

threatened now has the confidence to ask for help in the knowledge

:10:49.:10:51.

Thanks for joining us on Midlands Today.

:10:52.:10:59.

We'll have your detailed weather forecast shortly -

:11:00.:11:01.

something more like winter than spring on the way.

:11:02.:11:03.

Also in tonight's programme: A marathon effort -

:11:04.:11:05.

the man who was told he'd never walk again after breaking his spine

:11:06.:11:08.

And how paddling our waterways turned into a journey of discovery

:11:09.:11:12.

If you're a regular train traveller, you'll appreciate having

:11:13.:11:22.

London Midland is joining other train companies by offering just

:11:23.:11:29.

that and something else - on-board entertainment,

:11:30.:11:32.

It's hoped it will be available on 70% of our trains

:11:33.:11:38.

Here's our transport correspondent Peter Plisner.

:11:39.:11:40.

Fancy watching a blockbuster movie next time you're on the train?

:11:41.:11:47.

Now you can and although it's only a limited selection, in the future

:11:48.:11:50.

Passengers we spoke to this morning seem to like the idea.

:11:51.:11:54.

There are cartoons on there which is handy when you. . Yeah, it's good

:11:55.:12:05.

but they could have a bit more on there.

:12:06.:12:06.

The entertainment firm behind the new system says there's

:12:07.:12:08.

Of course, Virgin Trains was the first to have

:12:09.:12:12.

14 years ago, its new Pendolino trains had an Audi system,

:12:13.:12:25.

-- audio system, but this morning when I tried

:12:26.:12:29.

-- audio system, but this morning when I tried to plug in, the sockets

:12:30.:12:33.

and the entertainment seemed to have vanished.

:12:34.:12:34.

But for people who just want to work, free Wi-Fi

:12:35.:12:37.

But if you've used online Wi-Fi systems on trains before you how

:12:38.:12:44.

slow they can be but this promises to be different because a lot of the

:12:45.:12:47.

content people will be watching is already on board the train on a

:12:48.:12:48.

special server. But London Midland is pretty late

:12:49.:12:49.

in the game with on board Wi-Fi. Virgin Trains has had it for years,

:12:50.:12:53.

but it's only free in First class. It's a similar picture on board

:12:54.:12:56.

with Cross Country trains. Both Chiltern Railways

:12:57.:12:59.

and Arriva Trains Wales allows free Until now it has not been an option

:13:00.:13:10.

for us and we have had to concentrate on other parts of the

:13:11.:13:12.

business but now was the time where we been able to take a step ahead of

:13:13.:13:17.

the traditional author of Wi-Fi. It's free and first class and

:13:18.:13:19.

standard class and you get the entertainment as well at no extra

:13:20.:13:21.

cost. The new train entertainment

:13:22.:13:21.

system go live officially from tomorrow and it's available

:13:22.:13:24.

on all London Midland long distance routes and some local services

:13:25.:13:27.

including all trains Let's start with the derby game

:13:28.:13:29.

at Villa Park on Sunday. Yes, Gabby Agbonlahor is a folk hero

:13:30.:13:51.

across one half of Birmingham. But he's not exactly top of the pops

:13:52.:13:54.

in the other half of the city. The Villa striker loves

:13:55.:13:58.

scoring against the Blues. And his winning goal leaves

:13:59.:14:00.

Harry Redknapp only two points clear of relegation,

:14:01.:14:02.

with two games left to play. Ian Winter reports

:14:03.:14:04.

on the day Harry met Gabby. You Couldn't Make it up productions

:14:05.:14:06.

are proud to present Harry was 70, an East Ender

:14:07.:14:10.

on his first date at the second Gabby was 30, an experienced

:14:11.:14:21.

Brummie with claret I just saw Gabby walk-through at

:14:22.:14:31.

half past eight this morning which doesn't happen often so he has done

:14:32.:14:33.

everything he can to be involved. After all, it was ten

:14:34.:14:34.

years since his first But 14 months since his last

:14:35.:14:40.

goal against anybody. He came on with half an hour left,

:14:41.:14:44.

and got a warm welcome from his old team-mate Craig

:14:45.:14:47.

Gardner. He wasted no time in

:14:48.:14:49.

making his presence felt. First, a little tussle

:14:50.:14:52.

with Ryan Shotton. And then, only nine minutes

:14:53.:14:53.

after coming on, Gabby rifled His fifth against the Blues to put

:14:54.:14:59.

the Villa fans on cloud nine. No question who was their man of

:15:00.:15:07.

the match, for his cameo appearance. That will keep him happy

:15:08.:15:10.

here for another year. Blues' best chance had fallen

:15:11.:15:16.

to Che Adams in the first half. Because with only two games left,

:15:17.:15:21.

at home to Huddersfield and away to Bristol City,

:15:22.:15:27.

they're only two points above the trapdoor that

:15:28.:15:29.

drops into League One. At least both sets of fans

:15:30.:15:32.

were united by their heartfelt But will there be a sequel

:15:33.:15:35.

of When Harry Met Gabby next season. Or will they be heading

:15:36.:15:42.

in different directions, So the Blues under massive pressure

:15:43.:15:46.

now down at the bottom. I think that's probably the

:15:47.:16:03.

achievement of any team in the championship this season. They beat

:16:04.:16:07.

Leeds United on Saturday. They need one more point to be guaranteed a

:16:08.:16:09.

place in the championship next season although they have probably

:16:10.:16:13.

already done enough. A different story for portrayal, they're in the

:16:14.:16:16.

relegation zone. They lost 2-0 at home to Bolton

:16:17.:16:18.

in a game which was also marred by a pitch invasion involving both

:16:19.:16:22.

sets of fans. Shrewsbury got a vital 1-0 win

:16:23.:16:24.

at home to Southend to pull Tomorrow night Vale at Walsall

:16:25.:16:27.

and must get at least a draw Coventry beat Walsall 1-0

:16:28.:16:31.

on Saturday but of course And congratulation to Jessica Parker

:16:32.:16:35.

of Birmingham City Ladies. She's been voted the PFA

:16:36.:16:41.

Young Women's player of the year. In Rugby Union Gloucester

:16:42.:16:47.

have a European final A remarkable team performance

:16:48.:16:52.

to win away at La Rochelle They won 16-14 with Billy Burns

:16:53.:16:59.

scoring all of their points La Rochelle hadn't lost at home

:17:00.:17:06.

all season so a tremendous They'll play Stade Francais

:17:07.:17:11.

in the final on May 12th. And an Olympic bronze medal for

:17:12.:17:24.

Birchfield Harrier Kelly Sotherton, This concerns the heptathlon in

:17:25.:17:27.

Beijing, 2008. Sotherton is now a coach,

:17:28.:17:44.

but she finished fourth. Russia's Tatiana Chernova was third

:17:45.:17:46.

has been disqualified for failing So Kelly has been

:17:47.:17:48.

promoted to the bronze. And we've had plenty of remarkable

:17:49.:17:56.

athletic performances of a different kind from yesterday's London

:17:57.:17:59.

Marathon. Among them was Steven Smith

:18:00.:18:00.

from Wellesbourne. He broke his spine in 2011

:18:01.:18:17.

and was told at the time But he completed the course

:18:18.:18:20.

yesterday in nine He may have been deciding

:18:21.:18:24.

on which horse to back at Warwick racecourse this afternoon,

:18:25.:18:38.

but Steven Smith Yesterday, despite being told

:18:39.:18:39.

he would never walk again, he completed the London Marathon

:18:40.:18:42.

in nine hours, 17 minutes. You go up towards Buckingham Palace

:18:43.:18:45.

then you see this sign, "385 yards to go", and that

:18:46.:18:48.

must be the longest 385 It seemed to take an hour but it

:18:49.:18:55.

probably took a minute. Once I got to finishing line,

:18:56.:19:03.

it was just relief. Steven from Stratford

:19:04.:19:09.

broke his spine in 2011 after jumping from a window

:19:10.:19:11.

at his French holiday home By completing a marathon,

:19:12.:19:13.

he has raised ?70,000 Even more remarkable,

:19:14.:19:17.

considering he only managed Most people go through what I went

:19:18.:19:22.

through would have been paralysed completely but I wasn't so I felt

:19:23.:19:30.

if I could raise money for this wonderful charity that is doing

:19:31.:19:34.

research into the cure for paralysis A fantastic achievement from Steven

:19:35.:19:37.

and he was one of many We can't mention them

:19:38.:19:44.

all, but here's a few. Congratulations to Coventry's Kare

:20:07.:20:13.

well done to 80-year-old He's one of the few to have run

:20:14.:20:19.

all 37 London Marathons, but has decided this year's will be

:20:20.:20:23.

the final one. Congratulations to

:20:24.:20:31.

everyone who took part. And, of course, Birmingham's due

:20:32.:20:35.

to host its first international marathon on the 15th

:20:36.:20:37.

of October this year. 7,000 people have already signed up,

:20:38.:20:39.

if you're feeling inspired. But if you're worried

:20:40.:20:41.

about managing the whole distance. There's a half marathon taking place

:20:42.:20:43.

on the same day as well. I did it back in 2008 when it was

:20:44.:20:50.

all fields! I think it has changed a bit!

:20:51.:20:52.

How well do you know the network of canals

:20:53.:20:54.

When the former Gardener's World Presenter Alys Fowler,

:20:55.:20:58.

started paddling the canals of Birmingham, it became a journey

:20:59.:21:00.

Our arts reporter Satnam Rana has been to meet her.

:21:01.:21:08.

She made her name on the BBC's Gardner's World, but Alys Fowler's

:21:09.:21:12.

latest project has taken her to the canals of Birmingham.

:21:13.:21:15.

A bag of air, a puff of breath and Alys Fowler is away,

:21:16.:21:18.

paddling off in her blow up pack raft.

You do get this lovely lapping of the water and you really calmed

:21:26.:21:32.

down, cos you can't go fast in the sport so you really slow down, your

:21:33.:21:36.

thought process slows down and you start to realise that at all sorts

:21:37.:21:37.

of details. In 2015 she took to the network

:21:38.:21:38.

of waterways in her adopted city I was looking to explore somewhere

:21:39.:21:50.

and I had all these ideas that maybe I could cycle around the whole of

:21:51.:21:55.

Birmingham, around the edge, any friend of mine said why don't you

:21:56.:21:59.

try and paddle all the canals in Birmingham? There are more canals

:22:00.:22:02.

here than in Venice so it seemed like a good idea even though I knew

:22:03.:22:06.

nothing about the canals. And so a voyage of

:22:07.:22:07.

discovery was under way. This is one of my favourite

:22:08.:22:13.

stretches because on the right-hand side, there is this thicket of birch

:22:14.:22:19.

and it's always full of wildlife then on the left-hand side, you've

:22:20.:22:24.

got this huge booming factory that makes these incredible clanking

:22:25.:22:29.

noises and nothing says Birmingham canals get to me than this funny

:22:30.:22:34.

marriage of urban wilderness and industry.

:22:35.:22:36.

Now Alys is sharing her journey and findings in a new book

:22:37.:22:38.

called Hidden Nature - Voyage Of Discovery.

:22:39.:22:44.

Along the way, she realised she was gay and ended her marriage

:22:45.:22:47.

I was essentially, strangely of all places, on the canals when I worked

:22:48.:22:59.

out that I really needed to come out and that was a funny, unexpected

:23:00.:23:00.

turn. Thanks the watery world of canals,

:23:01.:23:01.

Alys has come to know that she loves If you think it's chilly today,

:23:02.:23:05.

with the details. It's better out there! -- bit of out

:23:17.:23:38.

here. Look how the day transformed. They were thick clouds looming

:23:39.:23:42.

across Birmingham a few hours ago. The cloud produced some rain by the

:23:43.:23:46.

time it got to the south but when it cleared in the north, it was bright

:23:47.:23:53.

and dry. Once this front has cleared, which will be in the next

:23:54.:23:57.

hour or so, that will open up the doorway to much colder conditions

:23:58.:24:01.

through the middle part of the week but then things start to recover

:24:02.:24:04.

once we get to Friday and into the bank holiday weekend but I can't

:24:05.:24:10.

promise completely dry weather and Stilley? Over Sunday and bank

:24:11.:24:13.

holiday Monday, but let's take a look at the pressure chart. The

:24:14.:24:18.

pressure is sitting across the English Channel so there is a nice

:24:19.:24:22.

patch of clear sky over the Midlands and that is producing glorious

:24:23.:24:25.

sunshine but by the time we get to tonight, the temperatures will

:24:26.:24:30.

tumble away once it turns dark and they could fall to near freezing in

:24:31.:24:33.

the countryside and that will produce a touch of frost but with

:24:34.:24:36.

the winds increasing, most of that frost should be kept at bay. I think

:24:37.:24:46.

we will see showers in the early hours and some of those could be on

:24:47.:24:51.

the wintry side. We start in Central and southern parts with lots of

:24:52.:24:54.

sunshine and dry weather, temperatures rising to around eight

:24:55.:24:59.

to 11 Celsius but that is purely academic in the wind which will cost

:25:00.:25:03.

to around 40 mph and a showers will develop widely and some of those

:25:04.:25:06.

could contain some hail, some thunder even and some snow as well.

:25:07.:25:12.

The wind will pick up on the temperatures will drop but those

:25:13.:25:14.

showers will rattle and Rumble into tomorrow night and should fade into

:25:15.:25:20.

the early hours. We have a small amount of them on Thursday and

:25:21.:25:24.

Friday with some rain and temperatures picking up.

:25:25.:25:28.

You'll find a new film about some of the swimmers who use

:25:36.:25:38.

Despite efforts to save the Grade II Edwardian pool from closure,

:25:39.:25:43.

it'll shut its doors when a new pool opens in Sparkhill in the summer.

:25:44.:25:46.

But the Moseley Shoals, an LGBT group who've swum

:25:47.:25:48.

there for the past 17 years, say it'll be much missed.

:25:49.:25:58.

I'm really sorry to see it go because I think it is a very

:25:59.:26:05.

important, historic building. It's still a lovely place to swim if you

:26:06.:26:08.

come on a nice day like this with the light streaming in. It's not

:26:09.:26:14.

like other pools. I'll be very sorry to see it go.

:26:15.:26:17.

I'll be back with your late news at 10:30.

There are times in the life of a nation

when the choices we make define the character of our country,

:26:56.:26:59.

times when people stand up and demand real, significant change.

we have the chance to shape a brighter future for Britain
