Good evening. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
A missing 71-year-old woman from Minchinhampton | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
has been found safe. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
Hazel Denham went missing on Tuesday while out walking with her dog. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
A search by officers and people living in the town resumed this | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
morning and it was another dog walker who actually found Hazel. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:31
And despite spending three nights out in the cold, close to freezing, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
Hazel is recovering well. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
Our Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs, was there. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
The moment many feared would never come - | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Hazel Denham not just alive but sitting casually | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
at the bottom of Toadsmoor woods, chatting to police after being out | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
in the open for three days and nights. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
I remember just seeing a lovely big smile on Hazel and I climbed over | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
the fence and just gave her a big hug and said, we're so happy | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
to find you, Hazel. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
Hazel was in good spirits but very dehydrated and was helped carefully | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
into an ambulance to go to hospital for treatment. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Her faithful dog, Bertie, never left her side and is doing well, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
too, helped by a few doggie treats - the whole family grateful to that | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
dog walker who made a special effort to track them down. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Thank you so, so much, yeah. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
You're our saviour, really. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
Thank you. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
She told the police officers that she was going to go out | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
with her dog and find Hazel today, and she did. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
She found her. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
We can't thank her enough. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
I feel ecstatic, over the moon. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
It's fantastic that we've found her. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Totally unexpected and kind of a miracle, really, isn't it? | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
Hazel was confused when she was found but, used to long walks, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
she's obviously fit and resilient, having survived | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
during the cold nights. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:50
She thinks she's been missing for a few hours, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
doesn't know what all the fuss is about, thinks there | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
might be a missing dog somewhere and would quite | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
like a shower, she said! | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
It's quite boggy at the bottom. | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
I went down as far as I could till it got too thick. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
The search for Hazel became a huge community effort. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Police and specialist search teams were joined by volunteers | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
from villages around the area. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
They started at Minchinhampton and stretched out for miles, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
searching from early in the morning until late at night. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
I'd like to say thank you, on behalf of Gloucestershire Constabulary, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
to all the locals that have shown such interest in this story. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
The lady that found her today had deliberately gone out | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
walking her dog in a bid to try and find her. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
After a frantic three days, Hazel's family say they're just | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
looking forward to a quiet weekend to welcome her back home. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
Steve Knibbs there with that report. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
Avon and Somerset Police say they are dealing with an average | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
of 60 emergency calls a day from people with mental | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
health problems. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
They include those who are suicidal or at risk of harming others. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
Six months ago, specially trained nurses were brought | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
in to to try to ease the pressure. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
Our home affairs correspondent, Charlotte Callen, has been | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
to see how it's working. | 0:02:55 | 0:03:00
Protecting us on our streets - these officers are on the front | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
line, fighting crime, but the types of emergencies they're | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
being called to is changing. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
The police's role is to keep us safe and to make us feel safe. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:15
With an increasing number of calls from people | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
with mental health problems, their role is also changing. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:23
Senior officers say, too often, the police are being left to deal | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
with the most vulnerable as health budgets have been squeezed. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30
Last year, we had over 20,000 calls that had a mental | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
health marker on them. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
We're deploying to 50-60% of those minimum - | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
that's a huge demand. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
Police do have some mental health training but, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
with a 9% increase in calls from vulnerable people, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
something had to change. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
And six months ago, it did. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Mental health nurses moved into the emergency call centres, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
working side-by-side with the police. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
We need to work together to improve things. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
That's the only way things are going to improve. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
When jobs come in and when people are at high risk or suicidal, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:10
we're asked to risk assess that and get the right | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
support for people. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:14
Since September, when the scheme started, the mental health team have | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
provided advice in over 3,000 cases. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
They stopped police needing to attend in 364 cases and they've | 0:04:21 | 0:04:26
reduced the time police spent at the scene from an average of 7.5 | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
hours to three hours. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
But should it fall to our police to deal with these kinds of problems? | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
People want to see bobbies on the beat, officers patrolling | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
and answering their 999 calls quickly when they call about a car | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
collision or anything else that is seen traditionally | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
as police business. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
If you ask the public, would you like to see your police | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
officers waiting 6-8 hours in a mental health place | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
of safety while somebody receives an assessment? | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
They would probably say that they don't. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
Similar work is happening between the health teams | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
in Wiltshire and the police, and in Dorset, too, where they have | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
also seen significant benefits. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
Charlotte Callen for BBC Points West in Bristol. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
A monument is being built as a tribute to the young men who've | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
lost their lives in the River Avon. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
Sam Amin is one of 11 men who've died after falling | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
in the river since 2009. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
His family commissioned students from Bath College | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
to make the monument. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
It's going to be a beautiful monument and I think I will get | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
some, at some point, after one year or six months | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
when this project will be completed, I can come here, I can sit | 0:05:37 | 0:05:42
here and I can think about the beautiful life of Sam. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:50
Onto the rugby, and Gloucester lost to Newcastle in the final minute. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
There was only a point between the two sides | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
until the Falcons were awarded a penalty, kicked by Joel Hodgson. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
The score at full-time tonight at Kingston Park, 16-14. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:06
And more than 80 hot air balloons crossed the English Channel this | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
morning to set a new world record. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
Several pilots from the West made the trip from Dover to Calais. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
They've been waiting for the right weather to make the journey | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
and today was perfect. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
Celebrations will have to wait until it's officially confirmed | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
by Guiness World Records. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:33
Hello, very good evening to you. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
If you're after spring sunshine, you won't be disappointed | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
with the forecast for this weekend - plenty of it through both Saturday | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
and indeed, for the most part, through Sunday as well. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Temperatures will be climbing through the course of the weekend. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
We'll be getting at least into the high teens fairly widely - | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
could well nudge 20 Celsius. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:52
But overnight, it will be chilly and indeed there | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
could well be some fog around, including through the course | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
of tonight, more particularly across some southern areas. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
Temperatures could drop as low as 3 or 4 Celsius | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
in parts of the countryside. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
So, yes, a chilly and in places foggy start. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Very fair slight tomorrow. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
That will very quickly burn off because, above it, | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
effectively clear blue sky which sets the tone | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
through the rest of Saturday. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:12
The winds will be light and the UV levels will be quite strong - | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
do factor that in. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
So little change, then, through the afternoon or indeed | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
as we head into the evening. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:21
Temperatures tomorrow widely into the high teens, 17-19 C. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
One or two spots may well get up to 20. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
They've got a better chance of getting that high | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
during the course of Sunday. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:31
There will be a bit more cloud around, particularly in | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
the afternoon from the north-west. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Here's your national forecast. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:35
drag in more | 0:07:35 | 0:07:35
drag in more cloud | 0:07:35 | 0:07:36
drag in more cloud and | 0:07:36 | 0:07:36 |
