Today's main headlines in the south-east: | :00:00. | :00:00.
He's banned single mums and benefit claimants. | :00:07. | :00:08.
Now a controversial landlord is investigated | :00:09. | :00:11.
A teenager who starved himself to death was let down | :00:12. | :00:16.
by Kent's mental health services, says his grieving mother. | :00:17. | :00:24.
And the sun is back again for tomorrow. By the afternoon, we could | :00:25. | :00:39.
Kent police are investigating one of the country's largest | :00:40. | :00:44.
buy-to-let landlords, after he made a serious | :00:45. | :00:46.
of racially charged remarks about prospective tenants. | :00:47. | :00:47.
Fergus Wilson, who owns hundreds of properties in the south-east, | :00:48. | :00:52.
told his letting agency in an email that he didn't want "coloured" | :00:53. | :00:55.
people renting his homes because they left the buildings | :00:56. | :00:57.
He owns a property portfolio worth millions. | :00:58. | :01:04.
But Fergus Wilson says he's fed up having difficulty re-letting houses | :01:05. | :01:10.
because of curry smells and the cost of getting rid of them. | :01:11. | :01:13.
The Equality Human Rights Commission labelled his | :01:14. | :01:15.
And Pakistani and Indian people eat curry, so people put | :01:16. | :01:24.
the two together and say you are anti-coloured people. | :01:25. | :01:29.
We're not anti-coloured people, we're anti-curry. | :01:30. | :01:32.
Well, you would say that, wouldn't you, because that's your job. | :01:33. | :01:37.
You obviously don't believe it, because... | :01:38. | :01:40.
Your comments have been called disgusting. | :01:41. | :01:44.
Well, that isn't the view shared by the majority | :01:45. | :01:46.
The Equality Commission believes the ban is unlawful. | :01:47. | :01:52.
Kent Police says it is looking to see if any | :01:53. | :01:55.
It's certainly provoked a strong reaction. | :01:56. | :01:58.
but I don't think he'll ever be able to buy back his soul. | :01:59. | :02:02.
I think it's really shocking, actually. | :02:03. | :02:04.
I think if you think back to the '60s and the first | :02:05. | :02:07.
it was brought in to address exactly this sort | :02:08. | :02:11.
where landlords were refusing to let properties to people | :02:12. | :02:15.
These were the views in Maidstone town centre. | :02:16. | :02:20.
Everybody tries to protect their property. | :02:21. | :02:29.
In this day and age, that kind of prejudice | :02:30. | :02:31.
It's just horrific, it makes you feel sick. | :02:32. | :02:34.
Fergus Wilson has previously drawn up a list of banning single mothers | :02:35. | :02:38.
Fergus Wilson has previously drawn up a list banning single mothers | :02:39. | :02:40.
and fathers, battered wives and plumbers | :02:41. | :02:42.
in addition to what he calls "coloured people". | :02:43. | :02:44.
Because I am not objecting to coloured people. | :02:45. | :02:50.
Part of your question you should have been asking me, | :02:51. | :02:52.
was do you currently have any coloured people as tenants? | :02:53. | :02:56.
Well, there's nothing to back down on, is there? | :02:57. | :03:02.
At the end of the day, it's up to me who goes into my properties. | :03:03. | :03:06.
You have no regrets saying no coloured people? | :03:07. | :03:10.
Despite the backlash, he insists the ban will remain in place. | :03:11. | :03:17.
Charlotte Wright has been looking into this. | :03:18. | :03:19.
Charlotte, you've spoken to a lawyer tonight - | :03:20. | :03:22.
can Mr Wilson be prosecuted over this? | :03:23. | :03:28.
Well, there is legislation in place which makes discrimination on the | :03:29. | :03:34.
basis of race and unlawful act. The lawyer spoke to this evening | :03:35. | :03:38.
actually said Mr Wilson can be pursued in court over this. The | :03:39. | :03:42.
Equality Act from 2010 has a number of it calls protected | :03:43. | :03:47.
characteristics and among those of race and religion. Of a private | :03:48. | :03:50.
landlord discriminates against someone on the basis of race or | :03:51. | :03:54.
religion, they could be breaking the law. Simon mentioned the equality | :03:55. | :03:58.
and human rights commission is looking into this. If it does seek | :03:59. | :04:03.
legal action, Mr Wilson could face a massive multiparty claim in a county | :04:04. | :04:06.
court, with serious financial consequences, should he lose. | :04:07. | :04:07.
A man from Eastbourne who took pictures from the social media | :04:08. | :04:10.
accounts of women he knew and uploaded them to a pornographic | :04:11. | :04:13.
website has pleaded guilty to making offensive postings. | :04:14. | :04:15.
36-year-old Oliver Whiting used social media images of two women, | :04:16. | :04:19.
He admitted 11 offences at Hastings Magistrates Court | :04:20. | :04:24.
Five different art works are to form part of a permanent | :04:25. | :04:29.
memorial to the victims of the Shoreham air disaster. | :04:30. | :04:33.
11 men died when a Hawker Hunter jet crashed on the A27 in Sussex during | :04:34. | :04:38.
The designs, which are in the very early stages, will honour | :04:39. | :04:43.
the victims and their families, the first responders | :04:44. | :04:46.
19 months after the disaster which claimed 11 lives, | :04:47. | :04:53.
today, the first glimpse of plans for a permanent memorial. | :04:54. | :04:58.
It's been created by Brighton artists Jane Ford | :04:59. | :05:00.
A series of works to sit alongside the banks of the River Adur, | :05:01. | :05:09.
designed in close consultation with the victims' families. | :05:10. | :05:12.
We aim for this work to achieve a quiet contemplation | :05:13. | :05:15.
of the river and the sense of peace that it offers. | :05:16. | :05:19.
The memorial will be spread over five locations, | :05:20. | :05:22.
including a sculpture dedicated to the first responders. | :05:23. | :05:26.
A little further up the river, a tribute | :05:27. | :05:30.
to the Shoreham community, in the form a landscaped area | :05:31. | :05:33.
Then on the east side of the toll bridge, | :05:34. | :05:38.
a series of 11 arches dedicated to each of the victims. | :05:39. | :05:41.
People really like the fact that we've tried to create | :05:42. | :05:45.
areas for people to go to to do their own grieving, really, | :05:46. | :05:49.
The town's old toll bridge, a short distance from the crash site, | :05:50. | :05:55.
Now, though, Shoreham will have a memorial for all time. | :05:56. | :06:01.
Memorials are very important because I think when people | :06:02. | :06:04.
want to remember, very often they need a place to go to, | :06:05. | :06:07.
For people in the town it is a welcome focal point | :06:08. | :06:14.
Even the children struggled with what happened, and I think | :06:15. | :06:19.
it is right that there is a lasting memorial for people to go | :06:20. | :06:22.
I think it is lovely and great and it is important to have | :06:23. | :06:27.
Sussex Police's investigation into the crash is ongoing. | :06:28. | :06:33.
Tonight, they said they hoped to submit a file of material | :06:34. | :06:36.
to the Crown Prosecution Service in advance of the pre-inquest | :06:37. | :06:39.
An NHS Trust has admitted a young man from Kent didn't receive | :06:40. | :06:52.
appropriate treatment for the eating disorder which eventually | :06:53. | :06:54.
Steven Brazier, from Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, | :06:55. | :06:58.
was 19 stone when he started a healthy weight-loss programme - | :06:59. | :07:01.
but his weight plummeted to just eight stone within two years | :07:02. | :07:04.
Steven Brazier was so thin, he could barely walk. | :07:05. | :07:13.
He had lost more than ten stone in just two years, | :07:14. | :07:17.
after starting a diet to lose weight put on after breaking his leg. | :07:18. | :07:21.
He just carried on until there was no off switch with him, | :07:22. | :07:25.
Until there was virtually nothing of him, a fraction | :07:26. | :07:29.
He would be at the end of his tether, basically, would say, | :07:30. | :07:36.
"I can't go on like this, Mum, | :07:37. | :07:38.
"And I have just had enough, I just want to die," | :07:39. | :07:42.
and hearing your son say that is really, really hard. | :07:43. | :07:45.
The partnership trust sectioned Steven for his own safety | :07:46. | :07:48.
and he was treated for more than a year at a specialist | :07:49. | :07:51.
He seemed to have improved, so the trust decided | :07:52. | :07:54.
I used to telephone the mental health people, they would tell me | :07:55. | :08:01.
to ring the eating disorder service and it was just going backwards | :08:02. | :08:06.
and forwards, nobody seemed to know who should be looking after him. | :08:07. | :08:09.
In a statement, the trust accepts that communications | :08:10. | :08:12.
between the services looking after Steven was not adequate. | :08:13. | :08:15.
They say patients should expect a standard of service | :08:16. | :08:17.
And they insist they have learned from the failings in Steven's case. | :08:18. | :08:25.
He was just a skeleton with skin stretched over him. | :08:26. | :08:27.
His teeth had all come out, and he'd just... | :08:28. | :08:31.
I don't want anybody else to go through that. | :08:32. | :08:34.
The trust have now reached a settlement with the Braziers. | :08:35. | :08:43.
Brighton's i360 remains a "fantastic addition to the city," | :08:44. | :08:47.
that's the message this evening from the city council, | :08:48. | :08:50.
as the troubled attraction reopened after the seventh incident since it | :08:51. | :08:53.
It means the attraction has now lost 11 days of business | :08:54. | :08:58.
John Young has been following this story. | :08:59. | :09:01.
John, how significant could these embarrassing closures be now? | :09:02. | :09:12.
Well, early, let's crunch some numbers. The attraction needs to | :09:13. | :09:20.
pull in 350,000 visitors if it is going to be a success and if | :09:21. | :09:23.
taxpayers aren't going to pick up a huge tab. So far, 300,000 through | :09:24. | :09:27.
the door, so pretty much on target, but this is the problem, images like | :09:28. | :09:33.
this that flashed around the world in September on what became one of | :09:34. | :09:36.
five significant problems over the last eight months, when a temporary | :09:37. | :09:41.
toilet had to be assembled, people stuck for over an hour on that | :09:42. | :09:46.
occasion. So we asked the owners, give us some details on the numbers, | :09:47. | :09:49.
how are they moving, up or down? They wouldn't give us that but said | :09:50. | :09:53.
they were within target parameters. Prices go up by ?1 at the weekend | :09:54. | :09:57.
but tomorrow it is back open, it is safe, it has been tested. | :09:58. | :09:58.
In a moment, the national weather forecast, | :09:59. | :10:01.
but, first, let's get the picture in the south-east | :10:02. | :10:03.
Good evening. Well, today was cloudy but it stayed pile. Our top | :10:04. | :10:13.
temperature was 16 degrees, and for tomorrow, there will be some | :10:14. | :10:17.
sunshine and by afternoon, potentially, you could see highs of | :10:18. | :10:21.
20 or 21. The average the time of year is ten or 11. Those are the | :10:22. | :10:25.
sorts of values we are expecting to see as we head through tonight. More | :10:26. | :10:30.
cloud at times, some drizzle but mostly dry and very mild as we start | :10:31. | :10:34.
the day for Thursday. Cloud first thing but by the afternoon, it is | :10:35. | :10:39.
going to be brightening up, a gentle southerly airflow, so temperatures | :10:40. | :10:42.
along the coast perhaps a touch cooler but even there, very warm and | :10:43. | :10:47.
a pleasant afternoon. Highs of 15 or 16 degrees. Further north, | :10:48. | :10:54.
temperatures in the top teams. As we go from Thursday into Friday, | :10:55. | :10:58.
overnight temperatures of nine or 10 degrees, more of the same after some | :10:59. | :10:59.
rain first thing on Friday. far. The outlook for the next few | :11:00. | :11:06.
days, temperatures coming down a bit but staying decent for this time of | :11:07. | :11:09.
year. Here is Darren Bett with the national weather. | :11:10. | :11:14.
The warm air coming up on a southerly breeze all the way from | :11:15. | :11:20.
Iberia and across France into England and Wales. To achieve the | :11:21. | :11:24.
high temperatures we need to get into some of this dryer air and | :11:25. | :11:28.
sunshine. Even with the cloud today, 17 degrees. Not just about the | :11:29. | :11:31.
temperatures, let's not forget there is some rain around as well. Quite | :11:32. | :11:35.
wet in Pembrokeshire for much of the day. More rain overnight tonight, | :11:36. | :11:40.
some rain and drizzle in northern and western areas. Wetter weather | :11:41. | :11:43.
moving northwards across Scotland. Some rain in the south-west, | :11:44. | :11:47.
shuffling towards the Midlands. Overnight, a lot of cloud around. It | :11:48. | :11:51.
is going to be very mild indeed for the time of year, 11-12 in many | :11:52. | :11:56.
parts of the country. This is an sunshine beginning to creep into the | :11:57. | :11:58.
south-east early in the | :11:59. | :11:59. |
