Today's main headlines in the South East: | :00:00. | :00:09.
An emergency landing at Shoreham as a plane comes down in DC. The two | :00:10. | :00:16.
people on board swam safely to shore. It happened so quickly. You | :00:17. | :00:21.
had to run to it to see if there was that you could do. -- comes down in | :00:22. | :00:24.
the sea. We're live at Shoreham | :00:25. | :00:28.
with the latest. Life in jail for committing murder | :00:29. | :00:29.
over a facebook post - the judge says the killer's actions | :00:30. | :00:32.
were senseless and futile. It was the warmest day of the year | :00:33. | :00:39.
so far. Top temperatures in the south-east of 22 degrees. | :00:40. | :00:47.
Two people have escaped with minor injuries after their light aircraft | :00:48. | :00:51.
ditched into the sea off the Sussex coast this afternoon. | :00:52. | :00:54.
The plane came down around ten metres from the beach in Shoreham | :00:55. | :00:57.
Emerging from the sea early evening. Emergency services had to wait for | :00:58. | :01:14.
the tide to go out before they could start to pull the plane to shore. | :01:15. | :01:18.
It was surprising, you cannot believe it when you see an | :01:19. | :01:21.
aeroplane, you know that something is going to happen so quickly. It | :01:22. | :01:25.
happened so quickly. The thing was to run to it to see if there was | :01:26. | :01:30.
anything that you could do. The pictures show the plane just after | :01:31. | :01:34.
she was ditched by the pilot. Incredibly he and a young man, | :01:35. | :01:39.
believed to be 25 years old, climbed out unharmed. | :01:40. | :01:42.
I arrived at the scene and the light aircraft was just off the beach, | :01:43. | :01:46.
partially submerged. Two people in the plane swam to the | :01:47. | :01:50.
shore and appear to have only minor injuries and just in shock. | :01:51. | :01:55.
Witnesses who saw the incident suggested that the plane lost power, | :01:56. | :02:00.
and the pilot has managed to glide the plane safely onto water. | :02:01. | :02:04.
Eyewitnesses say that the plane was returning to Shoreham Airport when | :02:05. | :02:08.
the engine suddenly spluttered and seemed to stop. The pilot got out | :02:09. | :02:16.
and I asked if he owned the plane, I asked him if he was OK and if there | :02:17. | :02:20.
was only thing I could get him, he asked for a cigarette! -- anything. | :02:21. | :02:26.
The plane may not fly again, but the pilot and the young man had an | :02:27. | :02:27.
incredible escape. Lets join Claudia at the scene | :02:28. | :02:28.
in Shoreham and Claudia - you've spoken to the pilot this | :02:29. | :02:31.
evening... I have, the pilot came down here and | :02:32. | :02:40.
was having a look around the plane. He didn't want to speak on camera | :02:41. | :02:44.
but was happy to speak to me about what happened. He described the | :02:45. | :02:49.
moment when he suddenly realised that the controls were not working. | :02:50. | :02:52.
He said he didn't feel scared at all. He just simply glided the plane | :02:53. | :02:59.
down, he said it happened very fast, but he was able to calmly get out of | :03:00. | :03:04.
the plane, along with the man that he was with, and that's exactly what | :03:05. | :03:08.
eyewitnesses said to me. That it was incredible Hulk and they both were. | :03:09. | :03:13.
And it did not seem they were affected by what just happened to -- | :03:14. | :03:18.
how calm they were. His professionalism shone through. The | :03:19. | :03:21.
plane is now at the top end of the beach because they wanted it out of | :03:22. | :03:26.
the water as quickly as possible, because of the environmental impact | :03:27. | :03:29.
of having the plane in the sea. They did not want to leave it there any | :03:30. | :03:34.
longer, and Murray is in the process of being removed and taken away. -- | :03:35. | :03:37.
tomorrow. Claudio, thank you. A judge has said the murder of a man | :03:38. | :03:41.
over a Facebook post was "totally senseless", | :03:42. | :03:45.
and has issued a warning 27-year-old John Dickson | :03:46. | :03:47.
was sentenced to life in prison today for the murder of Carl Gregory | :03:48. | :03:50.
in Broadstairs last October. Dickson held his victim in a choke | :03:51. | :03:53.
hold for two minutes. It followed an argument over | :03:54. | :03:57.
a picture and comment Gregory had posted on line, | :03:58. | :04:00.
referring to his former girlfriend. The picture posted on social media, | :04:01. | :04:09.
too graphic to show here, that sparked a row that led to a meeting | :04:10. | :04:14.
that left a man dead, on a shopping centre floor. The image was | :04:15. | :04:18.
published as a joke by Carl Gregory last October. Within hours he had | :04:19. | :04:23.
been choked to death by John Dickson from Margate. Today the judge gave | :04:24. | :04:27.
him a life sentence for the murder of Carl Gregory. Carl Gregory's | :04:28. | :04:32.
death is an absolute tragedy that has had a devastating impact on his | :04:33. | :04:37.
family and friends. He was a popular and well liked hard-working young | :04:38. | :04:40.
man. He had his whole life in front of him. That life was cruelly cut | :04:41. | :04:47.
short by John Dickson. Following an exchange of angry words on social | :04:48. | :04:53.
media, Carl Gregory met two men at Western Cross shopping Centre. One | :04:54. | :04:57.
of those men was John Dickson. The 27 York Gardner put his victim in a | :04:58. | :05:01.
choke hold for nearly two minutes after letting him go, he began to | :05:02. | :05:07.
stamp on his head -- 27-year-old gardener. | :05:08. | :05:10.
The judge said that Carl Gregory had goaded him into going to the | :05:11. | :05:15.
shopping centre at Broadstairs on Facebook. | :05:16. | :05:18.
She went on to say that it illustrates the dangers of social | :05:19. | :05:23.
media because of the speed of communication. | :05:24. | :05:27.
I think the message here is that if you post online, people can get | :05:28. | :05:32.
inflamed very easily. I always think it's best to think before you post. | :05:33. | :05:37.
Following sentencing, Carl Gregory's family issued a statement outside of | :05:38. | :05:41.
the court. The last six months have been a nightmare for all of us. Karl | :05:42. | :05:45.
was a loving son, grandson, brother and friend to many people and we | :05:46. | :05:51.
miss him every day. In sentencing, the judge told John Dickson that he | :05:52. | :05:53.
needs to serve at least 18 years in needs to serve at least 18 years in | :05:54. | :05:57.
prison, and added that he may never be released from jail. | :05:58. | :06:01.
Ian Palmer, BBC south-east today, Maidstone Crown Court. | :06:02. | :06:08.
A woman from Newhaven has spoken of her shock of finding out that | :06:09. | :06:11.
a man she helped check into a hotel in Brighton carried out | :06:12. | :06:14.
Today a coroner opened and adjourned the inquest | :06:15. | :06:17.
He stayed at the Preston Park Hotel last Tuesday, the night before | :06:18. | :06:21.
he killed three people by driving into them and fatally | :06:22. | :06:24.
He was on the television, on the bridge. I didn't need to see him. | :06:25. | :06:33.
There was no doubt in my mind that that was the car. At that point, I | :06:34. | :06:39.
was just completely shocked. Completely... I did not know what to | :06:40. | :06:40.
do. That is definitely the man. Pupils at an East Sussex primary | :06:41. | :06:46.
school were asked to bring in toilet rolls and pencils today - | :06:47. | :06:49.
after parents were told finances The children were taking part | :06:50. | :06:52.
in a non-uniform fundraising day, but instead of donating money, | :06:53. | :06:56.
they were asked to donate essential The head teacher at St John's | :06:57. | :06:58.
Primary in Crowborough says schools everywhere are being | :06:59. | :07:01.
put under huge financial strain. Our Education Correspondent | :07:02. | :07:04.
Bryony Mackenzie reports. Basically, we have asked them to | :07:05. | :07:15.
bring in essentials. So things like pencils, rubbers, Sellotape, pens, | :07:16. | :07:24.
paper, write down to tissues, toilet roll. These are things that we are | :07:25. | :07:28.
struggling to be able to afford. People listen to that and think that | :07:29. | :07:33.
is shocking? To be fair, it is meant to be quite shocking. ?500 of | :07:34. | :07:39.
essentials. Money that can now be spent elsewhere. This school says | :07:40. | :07:42.
that funding cuts are hitting them hard. If we can divert money from | :07:43. | :07:47.
buying these kinds of essential buying these kinds of essential | :07:48. | :07:52.
resources, we can then fund the education of our children to a | :07:53. | :07:56.
greater extent. Making the curriculum interesting for them | :07:57. | :07:59.
rather than worry and monitor toilet rolls and glue sticks. We have | :08:00. | :08:05.
protected the school budget and are putting record funding into schools. | :08:06. | :08:09.
So why our schools claiming there is a funding crisis? There is ?40 | :08:10. | :08:14.
billion in the school budget but more pupils and increased | :08:15. | :08:17.
contributions mean that schools get less money per pupil over the next | :08:18. | :08:20.
three years. And how that pot of money is shared | :08:21. | :08:26.
is changing, with some getting up to 3% more and others getting 3% less | :08:27. | :08:31.
money. This school will lose money in both cases. So what do parents | :08:32. | :08:36.
think about paying out for the basics? I was shocked, to be honest. | :08:37. | :08:43.
It's a shame that education has become such that fundamentally, | :08:44. | :08:51.
worries me. The Department for worries me. The Department for | :08:52. | :08:55.
Education says that overall, East Sussex schools will receive more | :08:56. | :09:00.
money from next year. The school is considering permanent donation bins | :09:01. | :09:00.
to make ends meet. That was Bryony Mackenzie reporting | :09:01. | :09:04.
- and Charlotte Wright You've been following this story | :09:05. | :09:06.
today - what has the Department The government has said that it | :09:07. | :09:14.
believes this new way of funding scores is fairer. And actually the | :09:15. | :09:18.
schools we spoke to said that there are some positive changes that the | :09:19. | :09:21.
government is making. As you heard in that report, the pot of per-pupil | :09:22. | :09:27.
funding itself will get smaller over the next three years which is why | :09:28. | :09:31.
we've seen some Conservative MPs from the local area, in East and | :09:32. | :09:35.
West Sussex, club together on the issue, lobbying their own government | :09:36. | :09:40.
on the issue. There are some education conferences coming up in | :09:41. | :09:44.
the next few weeks so we could see some tough questions for the | :09:45. | :09:47.
Education Secretary over this issue. Thank you. | :09:48. | :09:49.
The warm temperatures broke records today - | :09:50. | :09:51.
It will be staying warm first thing, clear blue skies as we ended today. | :09:52. | :10:05.
More cloud around for tomorrow, temperatures a little cooler as | :10:06. | :10:09.
well. As you heard earlier today, highs of 22 degrees and tomorrow, | :10:10. | :10:14.
more like 15 or 16. Mild for this time of year. As we move through | :10:15. | :10:19.
tonight, overnight temperatures at ten or 11 degrees. Into the sort of | :10:20. | :10:23.
values that we would expect during the afternoon at this time of year. | :10:24. | :10:27.
Dry initially as we start the day on Friday but in the morning, this cold | :10:28. | :10:33.
front passes eastwards, bringing in some drizzle and a great deal of | :10:34. | :10:35.
cloud cover. It clears through and behind it, we see some sunshine. It | :10:36. | :10:41.
stays breezy. A south-westerly wind picks up. A bit of a different feel | :10:42. | :10:46.
but still temperatures in the mid-teens. More fresh as we get into | :10:47. | :10:57.
Saturday, single figures at eight or 9 degrees towards the weekend. | :10:58. | :11:00.
Scattered showers on Saturday, brighter by | :11:01. | :11:01. |
