Hello there. There is change on the way, but so far,

0:00:030:00:05

the New Year has brought the same old weather,

0:00:050:00:07

following on from what has been an historic December.

0:00:070:00:10

The stats are all in now, let's have a quick look back.

0:00:100:00:13

Four degrees is the average temperature for

0:00:130:00:15

your typical December,

0:00:150:00:17

the December just gone we smashed that record.

0:00:170:00:19

Eight degrees as an average across the UK.

0:00:190:00:22

What about rainfall?

0:00:220:00:23

It was the wettest on record.

0:00:230:00:25

That rain starkly concentrated across

0:00:250:00:26

the more northern and western parts of the UK,

0:00:260:00:29

which is where most of the flooding has been.

0:00:290:00:31

All supercharged by a strong jet stream,

0:00:310:00:33

and it does look as though that jet stream

0:00:330:00:35

is going to pep up again

0:00:350:00:36

over the next 24 hours and bring us

0:00:360:00:37

another dose of wet weather

0:00:370:00:38

across the whole of the country.

0:00:380:00:40

But let's fast-forward to next week,

0:00:400:00:42

what a difference.

0:00:420:00:43

A fundamental change in the track

0:00:430:00:45

of the jet stream, and that will

0:00:450:00:46

bring a significant change to our weather,

0:00:460:00:48

as we will see in a moment.

0:00:480:00:49

Back to Wednesday though, and still some damp,

0:00:490:00:52

dreary weather across parts of

0:00:520:00:53

north-east England and eastern Scotland,

0:00:530:00:55

where we have had so much

0:00:550:00:56

rain over the last day or so.

0:00:560:00:58

Not the persistent stuff, but still some showers.

0:00:580:01:00

More wet weather getting

0:01:000:01:01

into the far west of Cornwall,

0:01:010:01:03

but in between some dry weather,

0:01:030:01:04

albeit quite cloudy,

0:01:040:01:06

quite murky, limited sunshine out there.

0:01:060:01:09

If we go through Friday evening and night,

0:01:090:01:12

the rain out west will begin

0:01:120:01:13

to sweep its way north-east

0:01:130:01:14

to us, we are all going to

0:01:140:01:16

see some pretty wet weather,

0:01:160:01:17

unwelcome wet weather, of course.

0:01:170:01:19

And unfortunately, it is going to

0:01:190:01:21

get hooked up across parts

0:01:210:01:22

of Scotland well on into Thursday,

0:01:220:01:23

so more prolonged rain here,

0:01:230:01:25

watch out for warnings.

0:01:250:01:26

Quite a lot of snow over high ground as well.

0:01:260:01:28

Following on for the rest of us,

0:01:280:01:30

an improving picture, some sunshine,

0:01:300:01:32

although there will be some

0:01:320:01:33

showers rattling in on the breeze.

0:01:330:01:34

Chilly in the north,

0:01:340:01:35

a little bit milder in the south.

0:01:350:01:37

Now, that front lingers into Friday

0:01:370:01:39

across the far north, a bit of uncertainty

0:01:390:01:41

about its exact position but the

0:01:410:01:43

possibility of further persistent rain here,

0:01:430:01:45

with little fronts coming in from the west.

0:01:450:01:48

So a mixture of sunshine and showers

0:01:480:01:50

for most, the sunshine not feeling too bad,

0:01:500:01:53

the showers could be quite heavy again.

0:01:530:01:55

Quite chilly in the north, so some

0:01:550:01:57

snow over the mountains of Scotland.

0:01:570:01:59

As we hit the weekend, well,

0:01:590:02:01

more persistent rain quite possibly

0:02:010:02:02

coming up from the south-west,

0:02:020:02:04

so that could renew

0:02:040:02:05

the flooding risk, especially as it stalls

0:02:050:02:08

across northern parts of the country,

0:02:080:02:11

and again some mountain snow.

0:02:110:02:12

But it is a familiar picture,

0:02:120:02:13

as we have seen for so long.

0:02:130:02:15

Low-pressure dominating the scene across the UK,

0:02:150:02:17

and the eastern Atlantic

0:02:170:02:19

providing those rain clouds.

0:02:190:02:21

But if you were watching yesterday,

0:02:210:02:23

we took a further step back

0:02:230:02:25

and looked at the North Pole,

0:02:250:02:26

where actually, we've got

0:02:260:02:27

some unusually high pressure

0:02:270:02:29

building at the moment,

0:02:290:02:31

And the high-pressure serves to

0:02:310:02:32

kind of squeeze out

0:02:320:02:34

cold air in various directions,

0:02:340:02:35

and cold, dense air acts

0:02:350:02:37

a little bit like treacle,

0:02:370:02:38

we get a lobe of it,

0:02:380:02:39

which has brought a cold snap to the continent recently,

0:02:390:02:42

we've got a cold plunge across North America right now,

0:02:420:02:44

and it does look as we get into next week, we're going to

0:02:440:02:47

start to see some cold air pushing down towards the UK for a change.

0:02:470:02:52

How quickly that happens is still open to some question,

0:02:520:02:56

but what it will do is send that jet stream much

0:02:560:02:58

further south than we have had for a long time.

0:02:580:03:00

That is good news in some respects,

0:03:000:03:02

because it's along the jet stream

0:03:020:03:04

you get most of

0:03:040:03:05

the rain-bearing weather fronts,

0:03:050:03:06

and we'll be well clear of the jet then,

0:03:060:03:08

so the prospect of it turning drier.

0:03:080:03:10

Drier but colder.

0:03:100:03:11

So yes, a bit of a shock

0:03:110:03:12

to the system for some of us,

0:03:120:03:14

notably colder next week.

0:03:140:03:16

There will be widespread frost,

0:03:160:03:17

maybe a little bit of the white stuff,

0:03:170:03:19

but perhaps most importantly,

0:03:190:03:21

it does look like being

0:03:210:03:23

a lot drier than recently.

0:03:230:03:24

How long it lasts is another matter,

0:03:240:03:27

tune in again tomorrow

0:03:270:03:28

and I will give you another update.
